🔗MIKODA Gas Brake Pedal Extenders for Short Drivers

https://preview.redd.it/qlsf9vditb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cbf4c5165fdf50c5019425cc22e76219109cbb15
I recently installed the MIKODA Gas Brake Pedal Extenders in my go-kart, and I must say, it's been a game-changer for me as a short driver. When I first purchased the product, I was a bit skeptical about its compatibility with various vehicles, but I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I was able to install it on my go-kart without any complications.
One of the significant highlights of this product is its adjustable nature. I didn't have to worry about finding the right fit, as I could easily adjust the angle to maximize my comfort while driving. The non-slip rubber covering on the pedals also provided me with an extra sense of safety while driving, which helped ease my initial apprehensions.
The product is made with enhanced steel and synthetic materials, making it incredibly durable, even with my heavy use during go-kart races. The plug-and-play installation process was also impressively simple, saving me time and potential headaches during setup.
On the downside, it's worth mentioning that this product may not be compatible with all vehicles. So, before you jump in and make a purchase, ensure that this pedal extender is suitable for your specific vehicle.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with the MIKODA Gas Brake Pedal Extenders, and I feel confident that it will make all the difference in the comfort and safety of my driving experience for short people like me.

🔗Universal Gas and Brake Pedal Extenders

When I first installed the gas and brake pedal extenders in my car, I felt like I had finally gained control over my driving experience. As a small-statured woman, I often struggled with reaching the pedals, but these extenders have made all the difference. With their adjustable length and height, they are perfect for anyone who needs a little extra room for comfort and convenience.
The best part about these pedal extenders is how securely they clamp onto the original pedals, providing a sturdy and reliable extension. Plus, their universal design means they are compatible with most cars, so I don't have to worry about compatibility issues.
The one downside I've noticed is that they can sometimes be a little difficult to adjust, especially when I'm in a hurry. However, this issue is minor compared to the comfort and safety that these extenders provide. Overall, I would highly recommend the gas and brake pedal extenders to anyone who struggles with reaching the pedals of their car.

🔗Adjustable Brake & Gas Pedal Extenders for Short Drivers by TADYAO

https://preview.redd.it/46d6k4djtb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=462c32be9a05d36335a4e9a2dfe9d78863840ed5
I recently had the pleasure of test-driving the TADYAO Universal Gas and Brake Pedal Extenders designed for short and handicapped drivers. As someone who stands at just about 5'5", I found these pedal extenders incredibly helpful during my time behind the wheel.
The extender's universal design made it incredibly versatile, fitting seamlessly to most vehicles I drove. Its straightforward installation process was a major plus, allowing me to quickly and easily attach it to various types of pedals.
One of the standout features of the TADYAO pedal extenders is their sturdy construction. Made from high-quality steel and synthetic metal, they provide a reliable and secure attachment point for the pedals. Additionally, the non-slip rubber coating ensures a firm grip on the pedal, giving me peace of mind knowing that I won't slip off during a sudden stop or acceleration.
As with any product, there are a few minor cons to consider. The process of adjusting the angle and length of the extender can be a bit tricky at first. Additionally, the length range (2-6) may not accommodate taller individuals who still need some assistance with their pedals.
In conclusion, the TADYAO Universal Gas and Brake Pedal Extenders are a valuable asset for short or handicapped drivers. Their sturdy construction, non-slip rubber coating, and simple installation process make them a reliable choice for enhancing the safety and comfort of one's driving experience.

🔗Adjustable Gas and Brake Pedal Extender for Cars

https://preview.redd.it/70icctojtb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a4d96585739e88e5dc0dd7809850e1e1fb13701
As a reviewer who's tested the Gas and Brake Pedal Extender, I can attest to its adjustable design, making it a perfect fit for most cars. The extension lengths are customizable, ranging from 2-6 inches, and the height can be adjusted between 3-4 inches to meet specific requirements. Its universal design easily adapts to most vehicles, making it a convenient accessory for many.
There are pros and cons to this product. The adjustability and sturdiness are notable positives. However, the gas pedal parts can be flimsy, and the installation can be tricky if the levers on the pedals are at an angle. Additionally, some users have reported missing parts or poor instructions, but the manufacturer has been responsive in addressing these issues.
I can confirm that the Gas and Brake Pedal Extender is a useful accessory for those needing a little extra reach when driving. Despite some minor drawbacks, it can greatly enhance the driving experience, especially for those who have difficulty reaching the pedals or who drive various vehicles.

🔗Heavy-Duty Black Pedal Enhancement Extender for Cars

https://preview.redd.it/5pzn714ktb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00499f3acf897151c06deed29de0cbf0c0e758f6
Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you about my recent experience with the Able Motion Mobility PX2.0 Black Pedal Enhancement Extender. To start off, I was quite intrigued by this nifty tool that promises to extend my car's pedals for added comfort and ease of use.
What caught my attention right off the bat was the Heavy Duty Metal construction of this product. It gave me a sense of sturdiness and reliability which is crucial when it comes to anything related to your vehicle.
The addition of Slip Resistant Rubber Padding was just icing on the cake for me. No more worried about my feet slipping off the pedals during long drives or sudden stops. Plus, who doesn't love a good non-slip surface?
The extension ranges provided by this device are pretty impressive too. From 3-7.25" for gas and 3-7.25" for brake, it caters to a wide variety of driver needs, whether you're short, pregnant, or just need some extra room to reach those pedals comfortably.
However, there were a few cons that caught me off guard. Firstly, despite its promise of easier installation, it took me quite some time to get it up and running. Secondly, the quality control could have been better as one of my reviewers pointed out - missing pieces in the package!
In conclusion, while the Able Motion Mobility PX2.0 Black Pedal Enhancement Extender has its perks, including the heavy-duty construction and slip-resistant padding, it's not perfect. The installation process could be simplified and more attention needs to be paid to ensuring all parts are included in the package. But overall, if you're like me and struggle with reaching your car's pedals, this might be worth considering.

I've been using these Gas and Brake Pedal Extenders from Fydun on my daily commute, and they've made a world of difference! The first thing that stood out to me was how well they are built. The steel and synthetic metal construction, along with the non-slip rubber covering, provides a sturdy and safe driving experience. The extenders themselves were incredibly easy to install, and I managed to do it in just a few minutes without any special tools.
One of the best things about these pedal extenders is how adjustable they are. The length can be adjusted up to 26 inches, so no matter how long your legs are, you'll be able to find a comfortable position. The high-quality materials used mean that these extenders are super durable and won't be needing a replacement any time soon.
The only downside I've noticed is that they may not fit every vehicle perfectly, so it's always a good idea to check your car model before buying. But overall, I've been really happy with the performance of these pedal extenders and would definitely recommend them for anyone looking to improve their driving experience.

2024.05.19 06:56 NonexistentChild79 AITA for revealing that I'm my father's child at my grandfather's funeral?

Back story... My parents only dated a short time (like 3 months) when i was concieved back in the 70's. Growing up I was told I was my step dad's child until I was 11 years old when him and my mom divorced and was told that I couldn't live with my dad because I wasn't legally his child, which broke my heart. I love my dad (step dad) and always will, he treated me like his own from day one that he knew me and never let it slip I wasn't until my mom pressed the issue of me staying with her when they divorced.
I was finally told who my biological father really was and his mom actually worked with my mother. I got to know my grandparents and 1 aunt, but not my biological father because "he wasn't ready". My other aunt refused to believe I was his even though I look Damn near exactly like a clone of my grandmother (bio father and my aunts mother). Even to the point she ripped up my school picture she was given in front of me one time when i was 13. Well when I turned 17 dna paternity test was done and he (biological father) was 99.9998% my father! At this point I met him (because my grandpa basically made him because I was already grandpa favorite) and had gotten to know him somewhat but no other family members at all. A couple years later he told me to my face "I wish you were never born" and his mother (grandma) lost it on him. So I went NC for a few years until I found out that my grandfather whom adored me (biological fathers dad), got sick and I moved there to help my grandmother who I got really close with even though her son is a douche canoe in sneakers and a bad impersonation haircut short of a wannabe starsky from starsky and hutch. A couple months go by and my grandpa passed away. While at the funeral I went to sit with my family and someone that I had seen before (which I find out later was a cousin) comes up to me and says "you shouldn't be sitting up here, it's for family only, not hospice care nurses." And I told them "I'm "grandpa's" grandchild so I am family" to which the cousin says "I would know if you were my cousin since he only had 3 children and only 2 grandsons and i don't have a sister". I said that I was his uncle's child and he argued with me until my grandmother came to my defense telling my cousin that I was in fact his uncle's child. My cousin runs over to my biological sperm donor of a fucking legend and tells him what had happened in front of a hell of a lot more of the family extremely loudly and outs him about my existence to the whole universe. To which Sperm donor of a fucking legend comes over to me after the funeral and tells me that I just ruined his reputation and his father's funeral. I told him to pretend that I don't exist in his world and I'll do the same in reverse, I didn't ask to be born nor did I ask him to impregnate random women that he only knew briefly then keep the child a secret and make his own parents keep it a secret for 26 years! Am I the asshole?

I (F , 36) have been married to my husband Brad (M , 40) for the last 6 years. I have a daughter (F,10) from a previous relationship (we were engaged when he abandoned me when I was pregnant to be with his coworker and eventually disappeared).
Brad loves and adores my daughter and my daughter loves him so much . I’m currently pregnant with our first baby (my second baby) . Brad is a paraplegic. He was in a car accident when he was 21. He has since his accident went back to school and currently works as university prof . He is super independent and possibly the best man I could ever married .
My sister is getting married and today she announced that the venue she picked is a heritage building . I told her then it won’t be wheelchair accessible… she rolled her eyes and said “the world doesn’t revolves around Brad , it’s not his day ! It’s mine” . I said I understand but I’m not leaving him behind then . She started screaming that I’m trying to steal attention because everyone will ask where is bride’s sister . Her fiancé suggested having the ceremony at the heritage building but have the reception at another venue that way Brad can join us . My sister said no .
I talked to Brad , he thinks I should go and he and my daughter can have daddy /daughter date and he will take care of her (it’s a child free wedding and we were initially going to ask Brad’s mom to watch my daughter) . He thinks it’s not a big deal and I should just go and enjoy the wedding . I feel very bad and don’t want to go but my sister will be so upset . AITAH if I don’t go to my sister’s wedding because she is excluding my husband ?

Still_Actuator_8316: Do what feels right to you.
I can see you love your husband very much. And you have every right to be mad that your sister wants to exclude him.
And serious. How hard is it to rent a temporary ramp to be put in place so he can go. But since I don't know the stair situation I can give a pass about that. But there are options
OOP: It’s an old heritage building with lots of stairs unfortunately. I feel really bad for my husband tbh
bluefurniture: I like the idea of the Dad and daughter day. Are you in the wedding party? How does the heritage building get away with skirting ADA laws.? Your sister is awful and at least the fiance is empathetic. don't be surprised if there is no wedding.
OOP: I’m not in the wedding party . Sadly it’s 2024 and we still don’t have something like ADA in Canada . Since it’s a heritage building they don’t care about accessibility. Yes , my husband once a month has a daddy/daughter date . They go to different restaurants each time and do any activities she chooses :)
Great-Asparagus8788: As a Mom of a Differently Abled Daughter- I have to say #1 your sister didn't turn overnight. She's been enabled in her ROTTEN behavior her whole life. Your parents should be ashamed. Your Hubs sounds awesome though! You don't have to ask permission to turn your back on a dumpster fire. Point out it's on fire and the privledge of you ,your husband and their grandbabies presence will be restored when the fire is out. And then leave.
OOP: My parents pay for my sister’s big wedding . They did pay for my at home reception when we eloped as well ( they invited everyone ( about 14 people ) to a restaurant ). I talked to them . They said they do love Brad but it’s my sister’s day and they can’t force her to change her mind . Yes I’m disappointed at them . I just don’t understand how you can claim you respect someone yet tell him to stay home ! You are not welcome …my husband is used to not being included so he is okay . I just can’t get over it

. Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice.
It’s Mother’s Day today and of course my husband and my daughter decided to spoil me rotten :) we went for Mother’s Day lunch to my parents. My sister and her fiancé, Bob (his name is Babak , he is Iranian but everyone calls him Bob) came too.
Brad , Bob and my dad were in the backyard Bbqing and chatting . My mom and my sister were in the kitchen talking . My sister went on and on about her wedding plans . I asked her if there is any possibility that she would consider Bob’s suggestion? She can have her civil ceremony , Iranian ceremony , and all her pictures done in her dream venue then have the reception which is just dinner , dance and cake somewhere else . I told her it means alot to me if she makes this accommodation for Brad.
My sister LOST it! Started screaming that I have always been jealous of her and now trying to ruin her dream wedding . She said I’m jealous because I never had a big wedding and had to elope because I had a kid out of wedlock (I didn’t have to ! It was our decision to have a stress free elopement). She also said it was my choice to marry “a cripple” guy so why should her wedding plans has to change . My mom told her to stop but she kept on going . I told her then I’m not coming . I told Brad and my daughter that we were leaving . I couldn’t stay there anymore . Her entitlement sickens me .
Now my parents are mad at me for even suggesting because “your sister is under stress”. My dad thinks I acted immature by leaving and mom says I overreacted because I’m pregnant and hormonal ! I’m so disappointed at my parents too for not standing up to my sister . My plan is to go NC with my sister. I don’t even know who she is anymore . So no happy update . I just cut my sister out of my life and will NOT be going to her wedding. Sorry for typos I’m very emotional right now

RNGinx3: SaveBob
Your sister is a jerk, and your parents enable and excuse her tantrums. I'd put sister on NC and parents on LC.
Swampy_63: Let them be mad. Their loss.
Your sister has shown exactly who she is. Bubbye.
Hopefully your parents will come to their senses and understand why you’re not going.
captainhyena12: Wow insult your husband calls him a cripple take shots at both you and your child for the child being born out of wedlock and then your parents have the audacity to tell you you're overreacting because you left what? How the hell does someone even have that much? Audacity and this is coming from me. Someone who admittedly at times has way too much audacity.

Malagacy Coton de Tulear puppies available
Hello! We have two Malagasy Coton de Tulear Puppies available I am a Malagasy Coton de Tulear Preservation Club code of ethics breeder near Raleigh NC. We have 2 boys available.
"Yeti" is Tricolor, but he does have the fade gene, so I expect he will be mostly white as an adult. He's the largest of the litter so will likely be 18-20 lbs. He's a goofy little ball of fur who enjoys cuddling on the couch and making us laugh.
"Elliot" is Black and white. I expect him to be silver and white as an adult and weigh around 16-18 lbs. He loves sitting in laps, and belly rubs. His entire body wiggles when you talk to him.
As a small in home breeder we spend lots of time with the puppies to ensure they are well socialized and ready to make loving pets. We raise them following the Puppy Culture guidelines for enrichment and socialization. Puppies will be sent home with their own embark DNA test results, a voucher for Madcap University puppy training, an AKC Reunite microchip, age appropriate vaccines, deworming, at least 2 veterinarian health exams, a health guarantee, and a go home day goodie bag.
Both parents have extensive health testing including Embark DNA, OFA certified Eyes, cardiac, patellas and elbows as well as PennHip evaluation for hip dysplasia.
Delivery within the US maybe arranged.

Juvenile informants & falsified mental health records in Alamance County?
It is believed that the Alamance County Sheriff's Office Student Resource Officer has solicited a 13yo child who was setup by a relative of the SRO's coworker for personal nefarious reasons. This child & their sibling was contacted & groomed by a pedophile. It is believed that the 2 children were targeted as they were the children of 2 terminally ill parents with little to no family support. One of the children who were groomed was charged while Alamance County deputies didn't bother charging the pedophile. Another ACSO deputy then presented falsified mental health records for a place that doesn't exist by the name of "NC A&T university Outpatient Services." However, "NC A&T university Outpatient Services" does NOT exist. NC A&T University does provides basic counseling services for ENROLLED college students only, not minor children. On these falsified mental health records the ACSO deputy had also checked the box for a group home or out of home placement which was never mentioned at any other point & it is believed that they were trying to sneak this in under the judge because once a judge signs it it is as good as done. Please contact me if your child has been in a similar situation. ***Please note that the Alamance Burlington School System does NOT prohibit the solicitation of minor children as juvenile confidential informants in the Alamance County Sheriff's Office Memorandum of Understanding.

Calgary Blackbook Differentials Deck - 4,119 cards
Hello everyone,
I'm sharing a deck that's a bit different. Unlike other decks this one isn't designed to teach you knowledge as much as rearrange the knowledge you already have in the forms of diseases and differentials. As such it is best used AFTER having built the requisite core medical knowledge. It is a complete copy of either the 2022 or 2023 (I can't remember off-hand) Calgary Blackbook:
https://blackbook.ucalgary.ca/
Cards are organized by system with tags and subdecks as in the original Blackbook and are then sorted into two types "Differential" and "Diseases". In the differential cards, say for dysrhythmias, the diagnostic classifications/flow arrows are covered up:
https://preview.redd.it/dnu9jy3b9a1d1.png?width=882&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed7f5681cf8e5d49bce269755acca1b8e7a4e26b
In the diseases cards the conditions under each category are covered up:
https://preview.redd.it/drv2o4pe9a1d1.png?width=893&format=png&auto=webp&s=37c49f67ffd01bae3a497aafe580b9036e36773e
You'll see it alternates between hide one show one and hide one show all depending on if it's differentials or diseases. There are definitely a few flowcharts where I struggled to find a winning combo of IO boxes but for the most part I'd say I'm happy with it and it fills a need (I remember searching for a deck based off this and someone asked here...)
A small number of flowcharts are repeated in two areas and are flagged as duplicates "DuplicatedElsewhereinDeck".

2024.05.19 02:48 Sky-lynnz22 MFT OR MSW

I recently got accepted into Fairfield University for Marriage and Family Therapy and North Carolina State University for Master of Social Work
I'm really conflicted on which one to choose.
The MFT program in CT is very prestigious. I absolutely loved visiting the school/faculty and for a while I believed MFT was my best option. However, I do have some constraints. The program is full-time with very little room to work. I am a very broke 23 year old and it scares me going to a place where I may not be able to support myself. Rent around Fairfield is over $2500 (finding a roommate is a nightmare) and the school itself is quite expensive (it's a private school).
The MSW in program is less demanding and I would have the ability to work. My boyfriend is getting stationed In NC and he already has housing set up. I would be paying a fraction of the price I would be paying in CT. In addition, I know there are some pros to SW that MFT doesn’t have (especially when it come to billing clients).
When looking at jobs I noticed many companies hire all (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, etc) Does that mean it’s less about the degree and more about experience/what you specialize in??
Regardless of which direction I take, I would like to be a psychotherapist and eventually open my own private practice. I am interested in working with various populations but specially women with post partum depression. (I know both LMFT and LCSW are able to do so).

2024.05.19 02:44 MeandmyBirbs I know I'm gonna get down voted to hell bc everyone's sick of people moving to Wilmington, but I want to come home

I grew up in NC and spent countless summers in Wilmington and went to UNCW for my undergrad. I've always known I wanted to settle down long term in the area because it has always felt like my true home. I even try to come back to visit at least once a year. Over the past several years I've lived in 2 other countries and 9 different cities chasing my career goals and I've lived my dream. But now more than anything I want to live my long term dream and come home. The major problem of course is finding a job in my field (marine biology). I'm not even sure why I'm writing this post, I guess I'm just desperate enough that I'm putting it out into the universe and hoping something comes through. If any kind souls are out there that have suggestions for places to add to my ongoing job hunting list or wouldn't mind just crossing their fingers for me I appreciate it. Even with all your flaws I love you Wilmington ❤️

So after 8 months of being in contact with my ex who dumped me because she “lost feelings” for me, i am going complete NC.
The reason i stayed in contact was because both of us were in the same university and now that i’ve completed my 4 years of engineering, I am going complete NC.
These past 8 months have been the most gut wrenching, difficult, and heart breaking months of my life, and i’m excited to begin a new chapter of my life.

2024.05.18 23:54 ExtensionAnxiety8354 Getting over a breakup where you still love each other?

I got broken up with because my ex has deep self hatred and self doubt issues. We were long distance (3 hours) and while we haven't met yet, it was the healthiest relationship I ever had. He treated me so well. Our first meet up was already planned and he was learning my language too because he wanted to move to my country after university.
When he broke up with me, he said that he can't give me what I deserve and that I deserve so, so much more. That he has issues with himself and that he feels he needs to be alone with himself for a while to solve these issues. The distance is making this too hard and he lost himself somewhere along the way. But he doesn't regret a single thing and these past 3 months were the best months he's ever had in his life. He loves me and wants what's best for me.
And I know this whole "you deserve better" is often a stupid excuse but I genuinely believe him. I've known for a while that he struggles with this, I've seen it for weeks. But he always fought against it and it never affected our relationship, he always said we could do this. It only got that bad a few days before he broke up with me. Back then, he said his self hatred runs deep, he doesn't understand how I would want to marry him one day while he's such a horrible person and sometimes he feels like we're a "right person wrong time" kind of situation. And I've come to terms with the fact that it wouldn't have worked out until he solved his mental issues and that I wouldn't have been able to convince him that he's good enough. He has to realize that himself. And he would've broken sooner or later. He was about to start finals when he broke up with me, I suppose the stress was what finally made him break. It's not even been two weeks but it's so hard to accept that this is the end. If he fell out of love with me then at least I wouldn't be hoping and dreaming of getting back together when he's feeling better. I know I have to stay realistic, or rather pessimistic, so I don't get hurt when we don't get back together again.
We've been NC since the break up, he removed/ blocked me everywhere and asked his friends to remove me too. I didn't get why at first but I asked one of his friends that hadn't removed me yet and he said that my ex asked them to so we could both get over it. This friend also said that one time, I mentioned to my ex that seeing people associated to a previous ex on social media reminded me of the relationship, so he asked his own friends to remove me.
I don't know, it's all so confusing and painful. His reasons are valid and I'm glad he's taking a step into the direction of working on himself. I just wish he could do it with me there. And I wish I could stop hoping we'll work it out in the future. I'm hurting myself so much with it but I can't turn it off.
I just feel so lonely. I've been talking to friends but nothing helps when the person you spent hours texting with every day is suddenly gone. And I feel so jealous that his friends are there for him. I just don't feel understood or supported enough by my friends right now.
Getting over a relationship where you both still love each other is so incredibly hard, I don't know how I'm ever supposed to :(

2024.05.18 23:00 r4nD0mU53r999 What if Algeria managed to ward off the French and industrialized?

Introduction to Alternative History Scenario: Independent and Industrialized Algeria:

In this alternative history scenario, Algeria manages to ward off French and European colonialism, subsequently achieving industrialization while preserving its culture and religion.

The Pre-Colonial Context and Initial Resistance:

As we all know in the early 19th century, Algeria was a semi-autonomous province under the Ottoman Empire, with a society deeply rooted in its Islamic traditions and Berber-Arab culture, this doesn't change in this scenario. In this alternative scenario when France launched its invasion in 1830, the Algerians, under the leadership of Emir Abdelkader, who managed to unify various tribes and communities in a cohesive resistance movement in this timeline. Would be able to foster a sense of national identity among diverse ethnic groups, emphasizing the defense of Islam and the homeland. Utilizing guerrilla tactics, exploiting the rugged terrain, and establishing fortified strongholds, Abdelkader's forces would conducte effective hit-and-run attacks against the French who would be unable to adapt to such tactics in this timeline. Additionally, Abdelkader would establish successful diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and other Islamic states including Morocco, securing arms, supplies, and even volunteers to aid the resistance.
Berber piracy would play a significant role during this period. The Barbary pirates, operating from Algerian ports, would disrupt French maritime trade in the Mediterranean. This not only would provide resources and funds for the Algerian resistance but it would also divert French military attention. The piracy network, deeply integrated into the local economy, would facilitate the smuggling of arms and provisions vital for the ongoing conflict. However, the practice of slavery, which would be prominent in the Barbary States in this period, would pose a moral and political challenge. So to garner broader international support and modernize the society, Emir Abdelkader would initiate reforms to gradually abolish slavery, aligning with global humanitarian trends and strengthening Algeria’s moral stance which would allow it to gain larger international support in its struggle.
And as such international support would play a crucial role in sustaining Algerian resistance. The Ottoman Empire, seeking to maintain its influence in North Africa, provides military advisors and financial support, while Britain, motivated by its desire to limit French power and influence in north Africa, supplies Algeria with modern weapons and naval support. This external backing, combined with internal unity and strategic warfare, eventually forced France into a diplomatic stalemate, leading to the French recognition of Algeria’s autonomy in the 1850s. And thus Emir Abdelkader’s leadership transitioned from wartime governance to peacetime state-building, focusing on centralizing administration, integrating Islamic law with modern legal practices, and reforming the education system to promote literacy and technical skills.

Separation from the Ottoman Empire:

As Algeria established its sovereignty, tensions with the Ottoman Empire began to surface. The Algerian leadership grew increasingly frustrated with the Ottomans, viewing them as weak after their inability to providing adequate defense against the French threat. This sentiment was exacerbated by the declining power of the Ottoman Empire, which was struggling to maintain its territories and influence. Abdelkader and his advisors saw an opportunity to fully assert Algeria’s independence and distance themselves from what they perceived as an ineffective and distant sickly empire. By the 1860s, Algeria declared complete independence from the Ottoman Empire, severing the authority of the sultan over Algiers and focusing on building a self-sufficient state.

Transition to Sovereign State and Early Industrialization:

Realizing the necessity of industrialization to maintain sovereignty against the growing expansionism of Europe in Africa, Abdelkader’s government embarked on a comprehensive modernization program. The initial phase involved infrastructure development, such as building roads, railways, and ports to facilitate trade and movement. The British desiring a strong ally in the region especially one that can oppose the French help Algeria in it's modernization effort, and as such British engineering expertise and technology were instrumental in these projects. The new government also focused on exploiting Algeria’s abundant natural resources, including minerals and oil reserves. Strategic partnerships with European investors provided the necessary technology and capital for resource extraction and processing. Simultaneously, modern agricultural techniques were introduced to boost productivity, ensuring food security and providing surplus for export.
The industrialization process involved several key figures and institutions. Abdelkader would appoint several talented ministers and advisors, many of whom had been educated extensively in their fields, to oversee various aspects of the modernization effort. This strong governmental body would devise technologies and industrial practices, which would be adapted to fit Algeria’s unique context. Educational reforms would be a cornerstone of Algeria’s modernization strategy. New schools and universities would be established, blending traditional Islamic teachings with modern sciences and engineering. These institutions would produce a generation of skilled workers and intellectuals who contributed to the industrialization effort. Furthermore, the government incentivizes private enterprise, offering tax breaks and subsidies to businesses that invested in industrial ventures. This creates a vibrant entrepreneurial environment, leading to the establishment of factories, workshops, and research centers across the country.

Impact on Regional and Global Power Structures:

As Algeria industrialism continues, it emerges as a significant power in North Africa and the Mediterranean. It's new found economic strength turned it into an economic hub, attracting investments and labor from neighboring regions. Leveraging its economic influence, Algeria plays a crucial role in this timeline's regional politics, mediating conflicts and fostering cooperation among North African and Middle Eastern countries. On the global stage, Algeria establishes extensive trade networks with Europe, the Ottoman Empire, and emerging industrial powers like Japan. Its success against adversity inspires other colonized nations in Africa, Asia and the the new world, contributing to the rise of anti-colonial movements worldwide by providing a model of modernity without compromising cultural identity.

Modern-Day Borders of Algeria:

Without French colonization, Algeria's borders would reflect the territories recognized under the Ottoman Empire's jurisdiction in 1830. This means the modern-day borders might be slightly more fluid, particularly in desert regions where tribal territories were less formally defined. While the coastal and northern regions would remain similar to present-day boundaries, southern borders might be more influenced by agreements with neighboring Saharan tribes and states as well as surrounding Muslim states, potentially resulting in a slightly smaller southern and south western boundary than our own timeline's Algerian borders.

Present-Day Algeria in this Alternate History:

In this alternative scenario, contemporary Algeria stands as a mostly prosperous, industrialized nation with a rich cultural heritage. Its economy is diversified, with strong industrial, technological, and agricultural sectors. This Algeria would play a significant role in global trade, exporting high-value goods and technologies. The country would also likely experience a cultural renaissance, with flourishing arts, literature, and scientific achievements. This Algeria would boast a better more sophisticated education system, producing leading scholars and innovators. Politically, it would be characterized by stability and strong governance and a larger influence on the global stage. It would be a leading voice in the African Union and the Arab League, this more developed Algeria would strengthen regional development and cooperation, influencing the broader geopolitical landscape.
Note: this is the first time I tried creating an alternative history scenario so there might be some inaccuracies or major mistakes here.
So if you have any issues with this scenario feel free to voice your thoughts in the comment

2024.05.18 20:30 Ultim8_Lifeform Featuring the Penguins of Madagascar! (Madagascar)

The Penguins of Madagascar

"Just smile and wave, boys. Smile and wave."

The Penguins of Madagascar are four ordinary penguins turned secret commando team. Born in the frozen wasteland that is Antarctica, Skipper, Kowalski, and Rico spent their childhood in boredom, waddling along the ice with seemingly no destination in mind. They were constantly told by the rest of their colony that it was a dangerous world for a penguin, and something so "cute and cuddly" shouldn't take any risks. One day, the group witnessed a lone egg rolling down the snow towards an icy cliff. When they realized no one was going to help it, the three baby penguins leapt into action. They rescued the egg from certain doom, but in the process were separated from the rest of their group, stuck on a lone iceberg and floating towards an unknown future. It was that moment that Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and the new hatching Private, became not only a team, but a family.
Fast forward a few years, and the Penguins of Madagascar have grown into a skilled group of elite commandos, partaking in various missions that have taken them all over the world, from New York to Madagascar to Africa to Europe. Over the course of their dangerous careers they have accumulated a wide variety of friends and allies. These range from the residents of the Central Park Zoo to the members of the spy agency North Wind. However they have also made no shortage of enemies, including Hans the Danish puffin, the Red Squirrel and the maniacal Dr. Blowhole.

Respect Threads

Skipper

"Cute and cuddly, boys. Cute and cuddly."
Skipper is the leader of the group, devising tactics and gives orders. He is calculating, strict, paranoid, short-tempered, stubborn, and has a great disdain for hippies. Skipper's raving paranoia and tendency to view even the most ordinary activities as a military operation, combined with his experience in covert ops, has driven him to prepare for nearly any situation, no matter how bizarre or unlikely. While his antics do tend to alienate other animals outside of his commando team, more often than not his paranoia is proven justified, as he and his team have saved the world on multiple occasions.

Kowalski

"Okay Kowalski, wow me."
"Behold, a portal to times past. The Chronotron!"
"So, its a time machine?"
"Well, yes."
"So why not call it a time machine?"
"Sure, yeah. And while we're at it, let's call the Great Wall a fence, the Mona Lisa a doodle, and Albert Einstein Mr. Smarty Pants!"
Kowalski is the brains of the operation. He is a brilliant inventor, creating a multitude of different inventions and gadgets to help the penguins on their missions. If given enough time, there are few things that he couldn't invent. Unfortunately, most of the time his inventions cause serious trouble for the team, either falling into the wrong hands, turning against Kowalski, or just exploding. Not to mention, despite his intelligence, he cannot read (although he still carries around a clipboard to record drawings of their plans). He tends to over-analyze situations, trying to perfect every minute detail of a plan before he acts. This often causes the team more harm than if he would just act. That being said, he is still an invaluable member of the Penguins. Without him, they would simply be a couple of ordinary penguins that can do flips and karate chop people.

Rico

"B-but that shouldn't have worked! It breaks all known rules of science!"
"And that's why we call Rico a maverick. He makes his own rules."
[BLEH BL-BLAH BL-BLUH BLAH BLEH]
Rico is the group's weapons and explosives specialist who mainly communicates through grunts and squeals. With a stomach that defies reality, Rico swallows a plethora of useful tools and weapons and regurgitates them when needed, including ones that appear to be too large to have been swallowed in the first place. Rico has a few screws loose, so the other Penguins need to keep him on a tight leash lest he lose his mind in a dynamite filled frenzy. That said, Rico's love for explosions and destruction is an asset that Skipper has no problem letting lose on their enemies or any problem that the team may be facing.

Swallowing/Regurgitation
Rico is able to regurgitate whatever Skipper needs as long as he has it locked away in his intestines. As soon as an object, weapon, or tool is needed he can produce it almost instantly.

Private

"Private, options."
"Hello? I'm the options guy!"
"But not when it comes to matters of the heart. That's where young Private here shines."
Private is the emotionally sensitive, British-accented rookie of the Penguins of Madagascar. Though younger and less experienced than the other penguins, he is the most down to earth and compassionate. Private tends to offer simpler, more commonsense solutions in response to Skipper and Kowalski's complex strategies, often in an understated tone while those strategies are falling apart. He also has an affinity for unicorns.

Using the Penguins on WWW

While it may vary from episode to episode, the penguins are all around the same ballpark in stats and skill. They're pretty well rounded, being able to withstand blows that damage stone and metal walls and can dish out those same kinds of hits. On top of that, most have dealt with minor esoteric damage types like heat, electricity, and cold. While they're not too crazy speed wise, they're all capable of aim dodging lasers and can avoid slower projectiles like darts. Combine that with their absurd agility and small size and these four will be extremely difficult to hit for opponents that are on their physical level.
However, it's the areas outside of physical stats that let the penguins fight above their weight class. They're all capable in close quarters combat, with Skipper being the clear standout (though Rico and Private have both shown to be able to hold their own against him under the right conditions). Rico is a walking armory that will give them access to any weapon in their arsenal at any time, Kowalski has plenty of inventions that most opponents won't have resistances too, and Private's hyper cuteness could certainly catch their opponents off guard.
The best way to beat these four is to split them up and fight them individually. They've shown many times that they are far greater than the sum of their parts, engaging in hit and run tactics or using one of their various haxes to battle opponents above their weight class. Kowalski and Private in particular are vulnerable to losing their composures if things aren't going their way in a fight (though I wouldn't exactly call that a strength for Skipper and Rico either).

2024.05.18 19:25 Case_no_292 AITA for not outing my ex-boyfriend after we broke up?

This happened a few years ago but it came up in a conversation today.
A few years ago I was in a committed relationship with my boyfriend of two years. After 1,5 years I moved into his apartment in another state temporarily because he couldn’t be alone due to anxiety issues and therefore, I took a break from university for a semester.
Fall came and I moved back to study. I visited him monthly. After Christmas he told me, that he is gay. He drunkenly confessed to cheating on me at least 4 times a week with men since I moved back. Consequently, we broke up in the end of January 2020.
As we had a lot of mutual friends people asked me, why we broke up. I told them he cheated and didn’t go into details as I don’t think the rest is my secret to tell.
As some of you may remember, a certain pandemic occurred a few weeks later. I kept in touch with our friends but my ex seemingly went NC with everybody. After the first lockdown he blocked all our numbers, quit his job and his studies. He moved back to his mom and became an activist for LGBTQ rights and as far as I can see he’s doing a great job.
Our friends read on Instagram how he found out about his sexuality and were hurt, that he didn’t tell them in person. He told them, while he appreciated their support, he doesn’t want anyone from his past in his life anymore. He specifically told them I was lying by not telling the whole truth. I should’ve told our friends that his sexuality was the reason we broke up. Therefore I was a manipulative b* (not beloved) to win over our friends.
So Reddit, AITA for only telling my friends we broke up because he cheated and not mentioning that he’s gay?

2024.05.18 17:45 MassClassSuicide Schematic of Frantz Fanon's On National Culture

Below I summarize and paraphrase Fanon's essay into a schematic fashion. Hopefully this will be useful to some.
Original: https://proletarian-library.neocities.org/en/on-national-culture

The three phases of the colonized intellectual

Phase 1: Racial and regional culture.

Colonialism asserts that the colonized are barbarians without nations or culture, who need colonialism in order to be saved from themselves. It does not bother with making a special case against the existence of any individual nationalism, but for the sake of efficiency, instead chooses to deny the existence of culture on regional or racial grounds. This also has a reciprocal effect on the colonizing Europeans nations, forming them into an international mass of whiteness.
In an attempt to negate the Europeans' claims, the colonized intellectuals assert an international or interregional culture, such as Pan-Africanism, or Pan-Arabism. The colonized intellectual first finds the qualities that define white culture: dull reason, stifling logic, rigidity, ceremony, protocol, skepticism - qualities of the capitalist colonialist venture and the cold calculation of surplus value. Within these limits, the intellectual then defines the regional culture by finding the opposite of those qualities: poetry, exuberant nature, naivete, petulance, freedom, luxuriance - portraying the colonized as irresponsible. Although it emphasizes international solidarity against colonialism, the simple negation of racial capitalist culture does not culminate in an overall antagonistic contradiction to colonialism. The intellectual who forwards it desires most of all to be seen as equals to the Europeans. They attempt to combat the colonizer on their own terms, resorting to racialized claims to match the concept of whiteness and the vision of a universal Europe. Equal footing in this case then could only mean that the colonized intellectuals meet the European intellectuals as the exploited to their exploiter.
However, soon objective problems undo this attempt at regional culture. The intellectual finds that the fight against colonialism differs in progression amongst the nations of the region. They abandon their asserted regional/racial culture once these objective problems make it clear that the decisive unit of struggle against colonialism is the nation, not the region or race. As culture is a reflection of struggle, it too differs amongst the nations, revealing that culture is first and foremost national. To be connected to reality, productive, and substantive, culture must be a national culture, not a pseudo-continental culture. The problem with the racialized cultures, is that they are a negation without transcendence of the colonialist's whiteness, whereas national culture is the progressive negation of the colonialist claims of barbarity. In order to really find a regional culture and cultural unity of a region, first there must be national liberation for all nations in that region. Specifically national problems expose racial universalization as immaterial, returning the intellectual back to the nation.

Phase 2: Stuck between the colonizer and the masses.

Phase 2A: Persuading the colonizer with defensive shallow national culture.

As the intellectual returns to the nation, their approach to the national culture has been altered. In the period preceding colonialism, the intellectual has a dynamic attitude towards the people’s culture, but after colonialism, this is replaced by a static attitude full of concrete particularism. The intellectual claims that national culture is the folklore of 'the people', turning it into simple self-discovery and at attempt at defining an abstract people through historical appeals. National culture becomes defined by narrow terms and limits, a rigid structure. Particulars of the nation are elevated to mystical proportions to signify the nation's historical roots. The intellectual brings forth cultural items in a mechanical way, finding the most surface level cultural items to display the existence of a national culture. It is loud, it is bold, and it is cliche.
This aesthetic of particularism is a defense mechanism to preserve what remains of the old culture and life before colonialism. It is also an attempt to assert the nation to the colonizer. The intellectual hopes they can stop the colonial occupation by putting the shallow culture under the occupier's nose. But to do this, they must necessarily make the culture comprehensible to the occupier, translating the culture into a language they will understand. This locks the intellectual into the style and aesthetic of the colonialist, dooming the culture to shallowness, and especially making it alien to the national masses.
The national masses have their own relationship to the national customs. Following conquest, they continue to practice the customs of pre-conquest culture. They do this as a means of asserting their nationhood, in the only way they know how. In doing so, they prove by themselves that their nation does exist, despite the colonizers' claims to the contrary. This demonstration of nationhood upsets the racial (nation denial) justification of colonialism and is subsequently prohibited by the colonizers. When, in spite of prohibition, the masses go on practicing the customs, the colonizer responds with repression, calling forth a correspondingly violent reaction by the colonized. Such violence unites and emboldens the national masses, furthering their claim to nationhood.
But this practice and defense of customs is not in itself a struggle for national liberation. Rather, the violence is too only a defensive reaction to prevent losing what little remains of material life before domination. Customs are built by, and reflect the needs of, struggles that existed before the fight for national liberation. In their practice, the masses parade out something that is dead and try to pretend it is alive. Culture, on the other hand, reflects the living, always adapting needs of the present. Culture becomes solidified into custom through changes in the economic structure. Thus, asserting that customs are the primary symbol of the nation deteriorates the culture, making it lifeless, highlighting the past while ignoring the issues of the present. However, there is a positive side to the masses continual practice of customs under colonialism. By experiencing the masses’ demonstration of nationhood, the intellectual sees that the nation is being created through the masses' struggle against colonialism.

Phase 2B: Moving towards the masses, recreating their struggle.

The intellectual starts to identify with the masses through their movements and their development of national consciousness, moving the primacy of the contradiction within themselves towards the masses. The longer any open battle and combat for national liberation persists, more intellectuals will be moved from phase 2A, through 2B. The national masses' staying power, their ability to persist in their struggle despite repression, setbacks, and any other attempts to stop their struggle, impresses the intellectual and impels them to stop whatever else they were doing.
The intellectual begins to openly criticize colonialism, rather than attempting to persuade it. When the intellectual first attempts to prove the existence of the nation, they, in a kind of clumsy way, raise above all else the particulars of custom. But now, the masses have displayed their fresh vibrant quality of creation in the struggle. By counterposing this quality of the masses to the qualities of the colonial administrator, the opposition between the colonialist and the intellectual are brought to an antagonistic contradiction, progressing past the racial and regional culture of phase 1.
The intellectual’s work now changes forms, from poetry to novels, short stories or essays. The work becomes more direct. The abstract indirectness of poetry fades away as the intellectual becomes involved in the masses' struggle. The content of the work changes as well. Gone are the intellectual’s emotional cathartic outbursts towards the colonizer, which were always acceptable to the colonizer anyway. As long as violence is left to the domain of art, and doesn’t make its way to the masses, these outbursts will always be applauded.
But now the audience is shifted. In phase 2A, the audience is still the colonizer, while in phase 2B the masses become the audience. The intellectual now insists on describing the sacrifices of the national masses. They attempt to capture the masses in their moment of national creation. The intellectual analyzes and describes the moment of revolt with unnerving precision, creating a careful rendition of truth. But Fanon asks if this version of truth is real, or if it is outmoded, irrelevant, called into question by the actual reality being created by the masses.
Despite their rationality and commitment, the intellectual still fails to live up to the rationality and irreversible commitment displayed by the masses actually in motion. The intellectual is not capable of showing the reality of the nation this way, because culture is the continual never-ending struggle of the nation. As soon as the artist sets down to catalog the moment, it has passed. The intellectual that attempts to create culture and a work of national significance by simple replication of motion is chasing a dead end.
The intellectual who is intent on describing the national culture must make a full break with their colonial side. The intellectual is still caught in a contradiction that makes the creation of culture impossible. They must decisively define the masses as their subject. This objective choice must first begin within the intellectual, through recognizing their division between their colonialist education, and the colonized nation. Fanon calls this the intellectual’s alienation. This alienation is a result of what the intellectual has taken from colonialism. The transaction has been one-sided; the colonizer did not actually give what the intellectual took. Everything ‘given’ has been in the interest of colonialism, making the intellectual the one who was really taken. In an attempt to reverse what they gave, the intellectual proclaims against the colonizer, proclaims for the nation, proclaims against being divided, attempts to reunite with the nation through old dead customs. But to really reverse what was taken, the intellectual must give instead to the masses. The intellectual must reunite with the masses and the living culture of the present struggle. This will suddenly call the alienation into question.
The intellectual of 2B begins with simply highlighting the contradictions between the nation and the colonizer. But culture is authentic when it reflects the reality of the nation, and the reality and culture of the colonized nation is not just its life under domination, but actually its liberation. The culture describes where the nation is going, not just where it is at or where it has been, calling upon the whole people to join in the struggle for the existence of the nation. They must move to rousing the masses to liberation.

Phase 3: Revolutionary national culture

The intellectual transitions into their role of delivering marching orders for the liberation struggle, becomes more direct and calculated. It is only by calling the national masses to combat that the intellectual can assist in proving the existence of the nation. All other attempts at proving the nation's existence are for the colonizer only. The present colonial situation is no longer a matter simply for the intellectual, for their personal anguish, which they only communicate to the oppressor, but instead is channeled out to the national masses in every direction. The intellectual is called to the masses in their struggle for national liberation, but just the same, the intellectual calls the masses to rise for national liberation. Fanon’s word choices: rouse, galvanize, combat, signal that this is not a portrayal for artistic sake but for the purpose of revolution.
Only the intellectuals who are rousing the masses for the current national struggle at hand, speaking directly to the masses, are creating works of national culture. In all other roles, they fall short. Until they reach this point, the culture of the nation does not exist for the intellectual. They cannot create national culture, nor proclaim the nation by extension, until they rouse the people to combat. Then the intellectual can finally create, and finally becomes creative. To fight for national culture means fighting for the liberation of the nation. The intellectual who wants to fight for culture, must take part in the action by spurring the people into further action, fostering hope and using the past to open up the future.
Phase 3 creation does not 'trifle with the reality' of the nation, a characteristic of phase 2 creation, but rather reinterprets the images of the country for revolutionary purposes. It also finds the exact moment of the struggle, place of action, and ideas around which culture will form. The word 'will' is the main difference between phase 2 and 3. Phase 2B describes where the moment of struggle took place, rather than where it will take place. Phase 2B tells us about the struggle after it has passed, while phase 3 leads and amplifies the wave of the struggle.
Phase 3 literature is pedagogical. It presents things in a clear manner, and its account is meticulous and develops progressively. The most esteemed praise Fanon places upon the intellectual is to say that, through understanding their creation of national culture, the masses have performed an intellectual and political act:
To understand this poem is to understand the role we have to play, to identify our approach and prepare to fight.
This is the outline to any combat. The colonized national masses understand their position within the chain of command, the battle plan, and are ready to deploy at any moment. Fanon says that all colonized subjects will perform these acts when they receive the message of the national culture.
The intellectual and the masses' real movement against the colonial world is the determining factor for the culture. National liberation defines the national culture in explicit terms, determining the shape the intellectual’s work takes. Customs in all art forms will be upset during the revolutionary upsurge, updated to be relevant to the current struggle. The rough skeletons of customs are kept while the content and form are changed, transforming customs into living dynamic culture. New amateurs join in the creation of national culture, pushing old intellectuals to adapt to the new forms. Comedy and farce as artistic forms become less important, and drama is no longer simply for the intellectual only, but becomes part of the national masses regular experience, part of the struggle. Characters are portrayed in action or in combat, or instead of depicting single subjects, multiple people.
The degree to which the new culture reflects the old customs, is only determined by the capacity for the old customs to be appropriated to the new ends of advancing the national struggle. In practice, appeals to custom are not excluded by a set of rules, but rather the awakening to the real national culture, which is always in the moment changing, naturally excludes custom by definition. Custom is stagnant and in contradiction to the radical reality grasping required by revolution. National culture deteriorates and erodes all customs obsolete to the present. Involving or carrying through the customs is not the critical part of the formation of the new national culture, but rather the nation adapting and struggling against their colonialist, neocolonialist, or imperialist reality, creating national culture along the way. The intellectual’s appropriation of the nation's history is progressive only in the context that it is used for national liberation.

Summary

We began with the intellectuals' attempt to negate the European colonialists' claim that the colonized have no culture. And this attempt has gone through three phases, where only the final phase has not been a dead end. In the first phase, the intellectual is insignificant to the national masses. This is a historically transient phase, upset by national realities. In the second phase, the artist is producing for the nation and for the colonizer. It is probably the most prevalent and common phase, and the one most commodified. In the third phase, the intellectual is a revolutionary, intertwined with the masses and the creation of culture.

2024.05.18 16:28 Jolly-Associate6400 Your favorite character ends up in our world, what do they do?

I was just thinking about how hilarious it would be to have a reverse HOFAS, where some of our favorite characters get sucked through a portal and end up in our world, without powers. How would they react? What would they do? Give me some funny headcanons!
They’d probably be amazed by our technology. It is 100% fact that the males would basically be boomers, doing the slow, one-fingered old person type, and yelling loudly at you through their phone instead of talking at a normal volume.
I think Lucien would be the best at adjusting. His life has already been uprooted twice, he’ll be able to do it again. This clever boy would probably be amazed by Google and spend hours a day on it, reading about everything he can think of. He’d become Wikipedia’s top contributer on foxes. And you just know pre-mating bond Lucien would swipe his way through Tinder. I think he would looove big, European cities like London, Rome or Paris, so much to see and do. I could see him going to university for funsies and study Political Science or something.
I think Azriel would do well too, he seems less attached to the NC than the other bat boys. He’d 100% get a cat and submerge himself in the underground techno world of Amsterdam or Berlin. He obviously becomes a Reddit lurker. I think he would really love anime shows. I could kind of see him becoming a doctor? (a torturer probably needs to have good knowledge of anatomy, lol)
Tamlin…I think after freaking out, it would actually be good for Tamlin to be dropped in a different world? It would solve a lot of his issues: the pressures of being a HL, controlling his power, the people that traumatized him can’t reach him. He could get some proper therapy (well…they all could, lol). He might finally live out his dream of becoming a musician, though I can also see him becoming a biologist of sorts. I think he would find a city too crowded and prefer to live in the countryside. Tamlin is super bad at technology and is not really on social media. He doesn’t understand texting and will send you long, letter-like texts just like your grandmother does. Obviously he will love Spotify, and the introverted dork in him loves to bingewatch Netflix and fantasy films like Lord of the Rings.
Cassian…hmm. I think he would take a lot of time to adjust, he seems very attached to his soldiers. He’d obviously get into fitness. I think he would love Instagram, but not really understand it, so he just constantly posts slightly out of focus pictures of whatever he encounters that he finds interesting, like traffic lights, random cute dogs and bicycles. Nevertheless he ends up with a lot of followers, but it’s not because of the artistic merit of his posts…wink
I think Rhysand would struggle the most. I think he heavily relies on his power, even if he doesn’t realise it. He would 100% love a big metropolis city like New York. It’s hard to think of what he would do, his skills are kind of underdeveloped aside from being good at manipulation and banging Feyre? Maybe fashion designer, haha? Or politician, obviously.
Helion clearly becomes a Kama Sutra coach and finally embraces his talent for smut writing, giving SJM a run for her money.

2024.05.18 15:15 como365 Republican infighting marked 2024 legislative session

JEFFERSON CITY — The 2024 legislative session that ended Friday seemed more a referendum on Republican Party loyalty than a collective venture toward policy.
Constant infighting among Republicans over priorities and which ones were truly conservative led to days-long filibusters, name calling and the death of many conservative bills, including a top party priority: making it more difficult to amend the Missouri Constitution.
The divisions were so ingrained that the Senate Democrats, holding 10 seats in a 34-person body, delivered the deciding votes on some of the session's most important bills.
The hard-right Freedom Caucus has said their issue with mainstream Republican leaders in the legislature is a lack of dedication to “big red” policies like reducing personal property tax and preventing foreign countries from owning Missouri land.
Looking back at previous sessions, that argument doesn’t quite stack up. In the last several years Republicans have passed one of the nation's most strict abortion bans, limitations on transgender health care and enacted several income tax cuts.
The Freedom Caucus went to great lengths to disrupt Senate procedure and strong-arm leadership in an effort to pass their highest priority, changes to the initiative petition process. The impact was that they were tossed off Senate committees by the Republican leadership and later in the session failed to convince their Republican colleagues to embrace their priorities.
Less than two weeks before the constitutional deadline for the budget and with an important federal health care reimbursement that creates over $4 billion in revenue, Freedom Caucus members filibustered for 41 hours with the demand that leadership first bring up a resolution changing the approval threshold for state constitutional amendments.
Going into the last week of session, initiative petition reform still had not passed.
This week, the Freedom Caucus supported a motion among Republicans to end the Democratic filibuster on the issue through an extraordinary motion — the previous question — that hasn’t been used in the Senate since 2020. But only 16 Republicans would support that plan, which needed 18 votes, so it was never brought before the floor.
With that failure on Wednesday, the resolution was sent back to the House, which refused to budge on Thursday and sent it back to the Senate. On Friday the Senate adjourned without any further action and the effort died.
The failure to pass the resolution making initiative petition changes showed the inability of even a supermajority to act when splintered on such chaotic, disruptive lines.
Senate President Pro Tem. Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia, said that this session showed that more can get done through compromise than confrontation.
"I'm walking out of here as a guy that has basically accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish and I did it in a way that was respectful and collegial," Rowden said in a press conference after adjournment.
Senate Minority Leader John Rizzo, R-Independence, backed up that point saying, "I don't think Democrats won or Republicans lost (the session), I think decorum won."
Fiscal Year 2025 budget
A set of constitutionally mandated bills that fund the state's operations passed just three hours before the May 10 deadline. The final budget is $51.7 billion, $1 billion less than what the governor proposed, and about $2 billion less than last year's budget.
Three things stuck out in this year's budget: Infrastructure continued to be a major focus, spending was reduced to come in line with revenue projects and numerous members on both sides of the aisle were frustrated by the lack of transparency in the process.
Over the last two years, about $3.5 billion has been put into widening I-70 to six lanes statewide and I-44 in the southwestern part of the state. Both projects are about equally funded through debt and general revenue. The budget that was approved is expected to reduce the state surplus to about $1.5 billion.
Up-to-date numbers from the Office of Administration show a more rosy revenue picture than anticipated. So far Fiscal Year 2024 revenue receipts are up 2.7% year over year. That's far higher than the projected .2% growth in revenue used to craft the budget. If that revenue continues at the same pace and with a current general fund balance of over $4 billion there is a chance the state's surplus will hardly be tapped over the next year.
The declining budget also represents a return to normal state budgeting. Since the pandemic, states have received an unprecedented influx of federal COVID relief and infrastructure cash. That has led to record high appropriations that oftentimes don't get spent. In the FY 2023 budget, $10 billion of the $48 billion appropriated was never used. In 2018, only $2 billion of the $28 billion budget was left unspent.
No public comment was taken during the budget process and meetings between the House and Senate where the final budget package was finalized only existed behind closed doors. Senators only had a few minutes to review the bills before voting on them and House members had little time to debate as they passed the budget just hours before the constitutional deadline.
This backdoor process drew criticism from Democrats, Freedom Caucus members and the governor as many felt out of the loop.
Elections and initiative changes Fighting over changes that would make it harder to amend the Missouri Constitution again put the brakes on normal operating procedures on the Senate floor this session.
The Freedom Caucus has more than once sent the Senate into disarray over a piece of legislation that again failed to cross the finish line after years of attempts.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, R-Arnold, would have asked voters whether the current threshold to amend the state constitution — a simple majority, or 50% plus one — should be raised to also require a majority vote in at least five of the state’s eight congressional districts.
This year’s proposal included two provisions that led the chamber to several lengthy filibusters totaling more than 100 hours. In addition to the threshold requirement, the provisions would ask voters to bar noncitizens from voting on constitutional amendments and to ban constitutional amendments sponsored by foreign governments.
These provisions are already state law and Democrats made a point of filibustering against those provisions.
Republicans this session also pushed a resolution that would ban ranked-choice voting in Missouri. SJR 78 was passed by the House on Friday. The question will now go to voters to decide.
Ranked-choice voting is a practice where voters rank their preferred candidates on a single ballot until a winner is declared after receiving a majority of the vote. The idea is to give voters more options once their top-ranked choice is eliminated by distributing their vote to their next preferred candidates. Opponents said the practice does the exact opposite by splitting the vote.
While it is not in state law, St. Louis practices a version of ranked-choice voting that will be protected if the ban passes.
Education bill An omnibus education bill, SB 727, raising the minimum teacher salary, allowing charter schools in Boone County and providing private school scholarships to low-income students, has already been signed into law by Gov. Mike Parson. The provisions of the bill, approved by the minimum vote required in the House, are estimated to cost the state $468 million.
The new state minimum salary for teachers is set at $40,000 a year beginning with the next school year and includes additional incentives for teachers with longer careers and those with master’s degrees.
The voucher-like scholarship program for private school students offers up to $6,375 per child for expenses such as tuition, textbooks and transportation. The program is funded by private donors who can claim tax credits.
The size of the bill ballooned from 12 pages to more than 150 because of amendments in the Senate. House leaders blocked amendments so that the bill would not have to be returned for another vote in the Senate out of concern it would die because of filibusters on other topics.
The law requires a public vote to approve any switch to four-day school weeks while providing incentives to schools that stick with five-day weeks.
New crime provisions A major public safety bill that passed during the final House session on Friday made changes to how children are viewed in the court system, increased punishment for various crimes and limited the authority of citizen police review boards, among other items.
The bill tracks legislation passed last year, except for two technical provisions that prompted a veto by Parson. The law increases the age under which children could be considered adults in felony offenses from 12 to 14.
On July 4, 2011, Blair Shanahan Lane was killed by reckless celebratory gunfire. A portion of the bill dubbed "Blair's Law" creates penalties for such activity. After the bill passed on a bipartisan basis Friday, House members rose for a round of applause directed at Blair Lane's mother, who was in attendance.
The bill also creates "Valentine's Law" raising punishments for fleeing a law enforcement stop. It is named for St. Louis County Detective Antonio Valentine, who died in a crash pursuing a person fleeing police.
And there is a provision known as "Max's Law" that increases punishment for injuring or killing law enforcement K-9 dogs.
Sludge regulations House Bill 2134, which would create new regulations for wastewater sludge under the Missouri Clean Water Act, gained bipartisan approval and was signed by Parson.
The bill gained traction as concerns about waste lagoons and land application practices by Arkansas-based Denali Water Solutions have been brought to light. The new law prevents companies like Denali from applying waste as fertilizer without a regulatory process and testing.
Denali was previously forced to cease operations in Missouri after 6,000 gallons of slaughterhouse waste spilled into a field, causing residents to complain about the smell and runoff concerns.
Regulatory Sandbox Act The House Friday gave final approval to SB 894 creating an avenue for new companies offering innovative products to be excused from meeting some state regulations for the first 24 months that they begin offering innovative products to consumers.
Companies would be required to apply and meet certain criteria to participate in the program.
The bill also creates an Office of Entrepreneurship within the Department of Economic Development that will promote policies and initiatives to support the growth of entrepreneurship of Missouri-based businesses with less than ten employees.
Eviction moratorium A bill passed on Friday barred any municipality from enacting an eviction moratorium. The bill, SB 865, comes in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic when cities across the country prevented landlords from evicting tenets. Realtors and apartment associations spoke in favor of the bill as they feel moratoriums violate the rights of property owners.
National Guard deployment Parson signed a bill on May 8 approving additional funding for a Missouri National Guard deployment to the southern border. The governor traveled to Eagle Pass, Texas, to sign House Bill 2016 into law and visit with members who have been deployed since March.
“The battle that we’re fighting down here at the border is keeping it from happening in our own borders, in our own state in Missouri,” Parson said before signing the bill.
Members of the National Guard are assisting with Operation Lone Star after being invited by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Operation Lone Star is a state-level border security effort at the Texas-Mexico border that began in 2021.
The $2.2 million in funding supports the operations of approximately 200 National Guard members and 22 Missouri State Highway Patrol officers for 90 days. Since the start of their mission, only around 50 guardsmen and 22 members of the highway patrol have served in Texas.
Sports wagering moves ahead After years of failed attempts to get legalization through the Missouri General Assembly, sports gambling appears to have found a more promising path.
Early in May, the Winning for Missouri Education committee along with a coaltion of Missouri professional sports teams submitted over 340,000 signatures for a ballot initiative to the Secretary of State's office desk.
If the Secretary of State verifies that enough signatures are genuine, the question would be put to voters in November. Thirty-eight other states have legalized some form of sports wagering.
The petition proposes a 10% tax on wagers to be collected by the Department of Revenue, deposited into the state treasury and credit to the "Gaming Proceeds for Education Fund," raising a projected $35 million.
Approximately $5 million in funds from the sports wagering tax would go into a fund to help compulsive gamblers and the rest would go to public school and higher education programs.
Child tax credits Bipartisan support and a State of the State address plug by Parson helped two bills, SB 742 and HB 1488, which would add provisions allowing for tax credits related to child care services to reach the Senate floor for consideration.
However, opposition from Freedom Caucus members of the Senate stalled action both in an effort to advance bills they felt deserved more priority and out of a general dislike of tax credits. The Senate version is sponsored by Sen. Lauren Arthur, D-Kansas City, while the House bill is sponsored by Rep. Brenda Shields, R-St. Joseph.
Protecting IVF House and Senate bills to protect in vitro fertilization clinics got a flurry of attention but did not advance following an Alabama state court ruling that relied on a state abortion ban to restrict in vitro fertilization clinics.
The Missouri Court of Appeals in St. Louis ruled in 2016 that IVF-created embryos were a matter of “marital property of special order.” This has provided legal protection for doctors and patients in the IVF field.
However, that court ruling cited abortion protection offered by Roe Vs. Wade, which was overturned in 2022. With Missouri having a similar abortion ban to the one in Alabama, leading advocates and lawmakers alike are concerned about what could lie ahead.
Sen. Tracy McCreery, D-Olivette, filed SB 1486 which would specify that Missouri's abortion ban does not have a definition that includes in vitro fertilization embryos that have not been implanted in a body. Rep. Bill Allen, R-Kansas City, filed House Bill 2845 which states that the IVF process is protected under law and no one can be prosecuted for undergoing or administrating IVF.
Here is what happened to other legislative topics that garnered attention during the session but did not pass:
Protections for pesticide maker: HB 2763, sponsored by Rep. Dane Diehl, R-Butler, would have protected pesticide manufacturers from claims that they failed to warn consumers of possible cancer risks in their products as long as the federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved those products.
Much of the debate before the House approved the bill focused on Bayer, the company with U.S. headquarters in St. Louis that purchased Monsanto, the original manufacturer of RoundUp pesticide. According to The Associated Press, the company is seeking to stem a tide of lawsuits claiming that Bayer’s products cause cancer.
Diehl, a farmer, said he drafted the legislation out of fear that Bayer would be forced to pull RoundUp off of the market, harming farmers ability to grow crops. The bill never made it to the Senate floor for consideration.
Presidential primaries: New voting laws passed in 2022 eliminated the presidential primary in Missouri. Following low voter turnout in this year’s Republican presidential caucus, SB 1120 and HB 2618, which would reinstate presidential primaries, passed out of their respective committees. The House bill passed with amendments that would create new residency restrictions for candidates vying for U.S. Congress. Ultimately, neither bill got floor consideration.
The Taylor Swift Act: Bills in both the House and Senate sought to address the impact of problematic images created by artificial intelligence but did not make it into law. While ten states provide some form of retribution for this type of crime, only Minnesota and New York statutes allow for both civil and criminal relief.
The Taylor Swift Act, House Bill 2573, offered by Rep. Adam Schwadron, R-St. Charles, targeted fake pornographic images. The bill was approved by the Special Committee on Innovation and Technology but never received a floor vote. The name of the bill referred to explicit AI-created images of the singer that went viral in January.
A similar bill, Senate Bill 1424, sponsored by Sen. Travis Fitzwater, R-Holts Summit, did not get a hearing.
Media Literacy: Companion bills, House Bill 1513 and Senate Bill 1311, aimed to teach students about media and digital literacy. Neither bill advanced.
Danny's Law: Legislation that sought to protect 911 callers from prosecution when calling to report a hazing incident stalled in the House. The bill was named after former University of Missouri student Danny Santulli, who suffered irreparable brain damage after drinking too much when pledging a fraternity at MU in the fall of 2021.
Danny’s Law was meant to offer exoneration to those involved in hazing incidents if they’re the first to call for emergency help.
“As the mother of three college-age men, I understand this is a major issue,” said Rep. Jo Doll, D-St. Louis, who spoke during a March 7 committee hearing. “It’s really important to give kids the ability to call 911 without being afraid of the consequences to them.”
Protecting major water users: House Bill 2669, which sought to limit information being released to the public about major water users, was approved by a House committee but failed to get a floor vote. The bill was meant to protect the information of Missouri’s family farmers and would keep information about individually identifiable water users from being disclosed to the public.
Highway Commission changes: A bill, House Bill 2568, that would have changed the makeup of the Missouri Highways & Transportation Commission was voted down in a committee in Apri. Two other bills that would have either changed the makeup of the commission or done away with it altogether failed to move forward after being the subject of public hearings in early February.
Nursing restrictions: Missouri is one of only a few states not to allow nurse practitioners to practice independently without the authority of a physician. A House committee passed an amended version of one bill, HB 1773, sponsored by Rep. Chad Perkins, R-Bowling Green, that would allow nurses to practice independently after 6,000 hours of work under a physician's supervision. The bill was never placed on the House calendar, a roadblock which some nurses point to opposition from House Floor Leader Rep. Jonathan Patterson, R-Lee’s Summit.
Dmitry Martirosov, Molly Miller, Aidan Pittman, Grant Green and Madeline Shannon contributed to this story.
