Most keys on MBP keyboard work, some don't, possible water damage

2024.05.15 00:39 bradleypariah Most keys on MBP keyboard work, some don't, possible water damage

Two questions:
  1. On a 2012 MBP, what is the levelock that holds the keyboard ribbon cable in place called? This is the one I mean: https://i.sstatic.net/CMj9W.png
  2. If that lever is snapped in half, could that be a possible reason why only some keys on the keyboard work, but not others?
Full story:
I took a long drive through multiple elevations, and a bottle of body wash exploded in my backpack. A whole lot of liquid soap made its way into my MacBook Pro. When I got home, after cursing for a while, I disassembled the MBP, washed the metal case, and cleaned everywhere with 91% iso alcohol and Q-tips.
I saw that soap got into the track pad, so I replaced that, and soap got into my charger also, so I replaced that too. Screen was fine, drives were fine, RAM was fine. Soap touched where the battery connects to the board and a few other places, but I believe I got it all cleaned out.
I let it dry a couple days, reassembled, and everything works (!) except for about a dozen keys on my keyboard, and the OS no longer detects a battery. The battery must be disconnected in order to even boot the laptop, but if I leave the charger plugged in (and plug in a USB keyboard), the laptop is completely functional.
I broke the levelock in question when trying to flip it up (the other half has disappeared), and so now only the left side of it folds down to hold the ribbon in place. Would that open the possibility of some key presses not registering? -or did moisture likely get in the keyboard? Just asking for opinions before I go buy another keyboard.

2024.05.15 00:32 tippfehlr Thinkpad T14 vs HP Dragonfly

I need a laptop for college, and the use case will almost be 100% programming. I need: - great battery life, should last a day - great keyboard - durable
I quite like Thinkpads for their durability, keyboard and track point (there are multiple 10+ yrs old Thinkpads in my family) and think one of the latest generations of the T14 or T14s (either new or used) would be appropriate, but the battery of an HP dragonfly is just immensely bigger at 68 Wh to the thinkpad's 48-58 Wh, and the dragonflys are lighter as well.
Also, is there an AMD version of the dragonfly? And if you have experience with Linux please include that as well :)

2024.05.15 00:29 chezdip888 Thin, lightweight, long lasting battery, gaming laptop UNDER $1,000

I am looking for a laptop for school and gaming. The games I need it for is fortnite, Minecraft, valorant, apex, and CoD. I also need it for school work. My laptop rn has integrated graphics so it's pretty bad for gaming. The reason I want it light weight and thin instead of bulky is because I don't want too much weight in my backpack. I also need the battery life to be around 8 hours doing school work. I am on a budget under 1k so don't suggest a laptop too expensive. I also need a reasonable amount of RAM and storage. Thanks!

I'm looking for a laptop for studying, that has a long battery life (or usbc charging). It'll only need to handle ms office and a bunch of open tabs. Budget is 400€ (500 if necessary)

Can push it to 500€ if necessary Are you open to refurbs/used? -no How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? -battery life is important. I'll need it to run for at least 8h, using ms office and a web browser How important is weight and thinness to you? -Not that important. Do you have a preferred screen size? 2024.05.14 23:47 jjxie1234 Laptop recommendation?

I've been searching for a good laptop for a few weeks now, and I'm kinda at a loss. I've baught a new computer but it underpreforms and some comments are saying that it's overpriced for what I'm getting. My budget is around 1,500-2,000, nothing above 2,000 unless it's a really good deal and it can be a few hundred dollars under 1,500, like 1,300. The main power tasks I want to do with this new laptop is video editing, (Premiere Pro), some Microsoft Flight Simulator, and occasionall Mienecraft with shaders. Battery is also a big thing. I would sacrafice some power for battery life, but a dedicated graphics card would be good. Good battery life in my case would be 6-7 hours on light tasks, maybe 2-3 on stronger ones.
Thanks!

2024.05.14 23:34 Eder_mg05 Help with super low battery life despite having done everything possible

I have a Victus 16, i7 13700H & RTX 4060 since last year.
I really need the PC for university, and the other day, while typing a word document, I realized that my battery drained completely from 100% to around 16% in about 1 hour 40 minutes, which is crazy for a laptop that is less than a year old.
I have tried the obvious windows settings like these, also tried calibrating the battery following this procedure, and even tried uninstalling Omen Gaming Hub and replacing it with OmenMon and limiting the max CPU performance to 25% on windows power plan while on battery.
After doing all this, I am getting even worse battery life, between 1:30 - 1:40 hours with a full charge.
Using HWInfo I have seen the battery is draining at a constant -30 / -35W at idle, while most people have reported to have a max discharge consumption of 3.5/4 W at idle (somewhat normal).
I'm desperate to find a solution as I need the laptop for the final exams and I don't think it will make it till the end of a 3 hour exam. Nothing seems to work for now, so I am potentially considering to contact HP Support and see if they can give me an alternative.
Thanks in advance

2024.05.14 22:17 ihave1vice Need a windows laptop with excellent battery life

Hi all - I'm looking for a mid-range Windows laptop (no Macs). It will be used primarily for work, which means Word, Excel, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, browsing the web, and watching videos. It will not be used for games.
The most important things to me are battery life (preferably 10+ hours of real-life usage) and weight (as light as possible while still keeping the battery life long). Will need a decent camera+mic combo for zoom meetings.
Should also have a backlit keyboard (I like to sometimes work in bed at night), at least 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD. Ports are also important, at least 1 USB C and 1 USB A. And of course, something reliable and won't fall apart within 3-5 years. Not concerned about screen or graphics card so long as it's passable for watching 1080 videos.
While I would welcome a good bargain, I'm fairly flexible on pricing.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500
Are you open to refurbs/used?
New only.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life above all else, then build quality, then performance. I don't need a touch screen.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important. Looking for light as possible while still maintaining battery life.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Nothing too large, 13/14 inch screens are best, but I am willing to consider 15 inches. 17 would be too big.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photo editing occasionally mainly with Photoshop and Illustrator. Don't really run games on my laptops.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
N/A
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Backlit keyboard, needs to be reliable, would like at least 1 USB C and 1 USB A port.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Nothing else I can think of.

2024.05.14 22:13 Zynir [Suggestion] Seeking Laptop Recommendations and Budget Allocation Advice for $2K Laptop/Desktop Setup

Hello everyone,
I’m a computer engineering student in need of a reliable laptop to handle my coursework and a desktop for gaming and work. Here's what I need in the laptop:
For the desktop, I don’t require high-end gaming capabilities—just something adequate for casual gaming and work tasks.
My total budget for both is under $2,000. I’m looking for laptop recommendations that fit these criteria. Also, how should I allocate my budget between the two devices? What percentage should ideally go towards the laptop to ensure it meets my needs without overspending, given that I also need a decent desktop?
Thank you for your insights and recommendations!

2024.05.14 22:10 angelsites Advice for replacement laptop?

Hello! I currently have a Razer Blade 15 from 2020 and although I'm attached to it, it has had many issues over the years with battery bloating and its fans so I'm finally looking to replace it. I was eyeing the Blade 17 as it's on sale right now and seems comfortably similar with some upgrades over my current laptop (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/razer-blade-17-17-3-gaming-laptop-qhd-240hz-intel-core-i9-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-ti-16gb-ram-1tb-ssd-black/6511851.p?skuId=6511851).
Alternatively, I was also considering the Lenovo Legion 7i 16" (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-legion-7i-16-gaming-laptop-wqxga-intel-14th-gen-core-i7-with-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-4060-8gb-1tb-ssd-glacier-white/6575391.p?skuId=6575391).
I'm not the most knowledgeable on laptops so any help would be appreciated :) I'm also open to considering other options, though preferably at the same price or cheaper. I'd be using it to game but I don't run games that are too crazy usually, my primary concern is running editing and animation software for classes and being able to comfortably use it both at home and on campus. Thanks!

2024.05.14 22:01 Competitive_Mail_716 Does Dell's "Express Charge" charge my laptop faster than Dell's "Standard Charge". Click here to find out. I tested it out and timed both.

Does Dell's
I conducted the same test making sure to keep everything the same for accurate results. Note the laptop was in use in both tests for a real-world use scenario. I started off testing Dell's Express charge and it was quite fast towards the beginning boosting my battery to around 50% in around 30 minutes and giving me 80% within 1 hour. The full charge from 0%-100% took a total of 2hrs and 2mins which was quite impressive whilst being in constant use and the screen being on.

I then repeated the same exact thing for Dell's standard charge, yes it took some time to get the battery to 50% and then eventually to 100% quite a bit slower than Dell's express charge. However, for most users I don't think it will matter too much especially if you don't need your laptop boosted. Using Dell's standard charge I found that the battery charged up from 0%-100% in 2hrs and 25mins. There is a little bit of a difference, and I think I will continue to use the express charge as it charges the battery quickly.
Some argue this is bad for your battery health, however, I disagree as this feature is inbuilt into the laptop and I am sure that Dell would not include something that would damage your laptop battery. Overall, I am quite supprised at the results.

2024.05.14 21:52 Craino Capable PC repair shop?

As in... are there any in the Akron area? I have a Dell laptop I need to get the back off of and see if the battery is dead. Don't have the tools and would just prefer someone who knows what they are doing to do the testing.
Every place I've tried in the past seem like they just hire nerdy high school kids (nothing against them - I was one as well) that don't necessarily have direct experience.

Horrible gaming performance? (Time Spy benchmark)(Games)
Hello :>
I've been struggling to figure out why my laptop isn't performing up-to-par. I've been using it for Rhino 7 software but I also game a lot but noticed my fps was always low and I usually had to lower my settings. Please help, it's summer and I really wanna enjoy the games I play but I feel like nothing is working ;c this is all testing with my laptop plugged in and I'm rarely on battery only. I tried cinebench timespy and it said my score is half the average of others with the same specs.
here's a list of what I've tried
  • reinstall windows
  • bios update
  • latest gpu drivers
  • set gpu to dedicated gpu instead of igpu
  • fresh install gpu drivers with ddu
