2024.05.02 23:51 cfalnevermore My Messed up Town: The Haunted Slaughterhouse

Welcome back to the Fallowveil trailer park, where the crack addicts have all seen aliens, the Witch is the glue holding the community together, and it’s been a whole six years since our last meth lab explosion. I never met you, but rest in peace Jones. I’m Mason, and I’ll be your janitor guide to the weirdness.
So I’ve talked about Jennifer, my paranormally sexy, but terrifying neighbor who lives with a married couple, strips under the name “Red Jenny,” and possibly eats people’s souls. She’s just the tip of the iceberg here in this town. I could go on and on about my neighbors. I have to do an entry on Trista the nocturnal hippy (maybe) vampire at some point. I have a feeling she’ll get a kick out of it. We’re actually pretty friendly, since we're both night shift workers. Frankly, she’s a bit too on-the-nose though. Pale girl, windows all blocked during daytime, only out at night, weirdly strong for such a skinny little person, drinks a mysterious fluid from a hip flask that she refuses to share, I mean… she’s either a vampire or a weird healthnut hippy and she dresses like she’s both. We’ll get to her eventually.
For now, let’s talk about the old “Schroeder Slaughterhouse.” The place has been a center piece of the town since it was created. It brought jobs to workers and brought lucrative meat processing trades into town, elevating it to more than just another ‘corn town.’ It’s also got horror stories going all the way back to its construction. Some say it’s been cursed by the devil himself.
I want to talk about this one because Trista talked me into going to one of Petunia’s barbecues last weekend. Not sure why she’s suddenly friendlier with me, but I’m not complaining. She couldn’t come with me of course, being a (probably) vampire and all. But hey, depression only gets worse in isolation. I should ask her out some time. Being a vampire might be fun…
So anyway, I went to Petunia’s cookout. Petunia herself looked up and actually cried out loud and power walked up to me to give me a hug. “Ahhh! I’m so glad to see you outside Mason! The neighborhood misses you!” I'm ninety percent sure that was a lie, but whatever. It’s comforting. I returned the older woman’s hug.
“Thanks Petunia. Couldn’t stay away from your cooking forever.” That got a few chuckles. To my surprise, a lot of my neighbors came up to shake hands with me. I was confused until one of them, a guy named Fred, who lives next door to me, leaned in to say “sorry about that friend of yours that died.”
So that’s what’s happening. Everybody heard about psycho Moe and how he’d dragged me to a strip club where he planned to go on a killing spree. Now they’re playing nice. That’s probably the only reason Trista’s being nice to you too. These people don’t really care about you. You’re worthless.
‘You know what, brain? You’re a real bummer. Now shut up while I try to be social.’ I shot back at my own conscience.
I finally worked out how to respond to Fred after a few seconds of awkward silence that made us both uncomfortable. “He wasn’t really a friend. Just a roommate once. The guy was messed up.”
Fred nodded sympathetically, rubbing at his mustache “Well sure. But that’s a heck of a… situation?” He replied.
“Yeah. I guess it is…” I tried to look thoughtful so nobody could see me rolling my eyes. “But hey! I think Red Jenny took care of it.”
Fred’s eyes widened at that. “No shit? Did he get… did he get a private dance?”
We were both interrupted by a silky smooth voice with a southern twang. “Glad to see you’re okay Mason. Try not to bring any psychopaths to my place of business, alright? It’s got plenty. Our poor bouncer had to headlock that guy.” She said all of this without even glancing towards us. Just sort of talking at the air as she sauntered by. She was glorious as ever, somehow making comfortable sweats look like a sexy bold fashion statement. Jennifer. Red Jenny. I hushed up as she stepped past us, and as she did, she cast a glance my way… and she winked.
Fred and I sat there partly struck dumb for a moment. That woman hardly spoke to anyone.
“Bouncer my ass.” Fred whispered to me. “That chick’s some kind of monster, I’m telling you. What did you see? She offered him a private dance didn't she?”
A few weeks ago I would have jumped at the opportunity to tell Fred everything I could about what I saw, but for whatever reason, I was less enthusiastic at the moment. “Yeah, she did, but I’m not really sure what happened. I was kinda stupified by the guns. She probably got a bouncer to help her, I really don’t know.”
“Never get a private dance from Red Jenny. Some say that’s a warning from wives, but the rest of us know it’s a warning from above. Something ain’t natural at that place.”
“I dunno Fred. But she works hard. I don’t want to badmouth her. Even if it was true, the guy she got was a wannabe killer. So she saved people.”
“Yeah, but how!?”
“I dunno man.”
Fred seemed to figure out I didn’t want to talk anymore about it by then. “Sorry, man. Must have been scary, either way. But hey! We all know you were asking around about Fallowveil’s spooky stories! Guess what!? A bunch of people who used to work at the old slaughterhouse are here! They’re all swapping stories by the grill! You should go listen!”
That piqued my interest. I used my phone to record as much as I could. I think I remember the rest. Now that I’ve looked at all my notes and stuff, I think I can provide a decent history of Fallowveil’s Schroeder Slaughterhouse. At least according to some of the people who worked there, as well as some who’ve lived here longer than me.
Most of the history came from a man named Willard Graves. He’s notorious for being really nasty when he’s drunk, and being one of the oldest people living in the trailer park at the age of 68. When I arrived at the bonfire where the group of workers had gathered, they were all swapping stories.
“I once felt a presence in the women’s restroom!” Said Polly Bucharest. “I was a floor manager in 2007. I was sitting in the stall there doing my business, nobody came in or out, but suddenly I just felt it. I got real freaked out. Like… goosebumps and everything. And feeling that way sucks in the bathroom. So I tried to hurry up and kicked open the stall so I could run to the sink… and the ‘shadow man’ was just standing in the corner. I saw him out of the corner of my eye. He was just there, standing. When I turned to look, he was gone!”
“I saw that thing too! The shadow man!” Said Peter Swanson. “Damn thing was standing up in the corner, on the catwalk out in the main floor. Same thing. I was working, one of the cows didn’t go down right away, and I was leaning down to stun it again, then I felt real uneasy all of a sudden. Real scared. Finally I noticed the shadow up there!”
“That happened to me in the break room!” Said Juan Esposito. “I was eating lunch when I felt it. Then there was a shadow of a man, I think, in the corner of the room.”
“It was more of a shadowy blob on the wall for me,” said Polly.
“Any of you guys see the weird bird?” Asked Carlos Sanders. “I saw it once. End of my shift, back in 09. Me and a few of the boys saw it. You were there Juan! You remember?”
“I remember. I’m not really sure though, Carlos. That one might have been a vulture.”
“We see vultures round here all the time! That wasn’t a vulture! No clue what it was. Just some big flying shadowy thing that appeared at sundown and flew off after a while.”
“Lots of people said they saw a strange bird. That’s part of why some people think it’s cursed” claimed Jane Lopez. “I never worked there, but my husband used to tell stories. Some people say it’s an omen. If you see the bird over the slaughterhouse, something bad might be about to happen.”
“I remember the stories, Mama.” Said her son, Martin. “I worked the floor for three years. I never saw a creepy bird. I wonder if Papa was just telling stories again?”
“Maybe, mijo. But lots of people tell stories about that place.”
“How about the one cow that Mr. Kurt takes, like… once a week? Anybody know what’s up with that?” That was Juan again.
“No! And none of us can figure out where the cow goes either! It’s creepy!” Poly replied.
That’s when Willard loudly cleared his throat. Willard was a tough looking old bastard. Usually sporting a frumpy tank top, a grumpy face, and a bottle of something in one hand. “Y’all didn’t work there as long as I did,” he grumbled in his raspy old voice. He kept his head and eyes lowered, like some old cowboy trying to be dramatic. “Y’all know who that shadow even is? I know the ‘sh’tory!”
We were all interrupted by a shout from a very angry Petunia, who was a few yards away manning the grill. “DAMN IT Willard! What did I say!? One beer! One!”
“I only had one! I ‘sh’wear!”
“You’re slurring! If I catch you sneaking any more drinks I’m not giving you any ribs or any cookies!”
Willard’s tough old man act crumbled as he went wide eyed at the mention of cookies. “Alright, alright, I’m sorry Petty…”
“PETUNIA!!”
“Petunia! I won’t have anything else to drink!”
“Damn right! Last thing we need is you making an ass of yourself again!”
Willard sighed as we all hushed a few guffaws. “Anyway,” he said after an awkward pause. That shadow? Any of you know who it is?”
“One of the dead owners?” Said someone.
“One of the dead workers?” Said someone else.
“Nah, nah. It was the FIRST owner. The ghost of Heinrich Schroeder. The builder and owner of Schroeder Slaughterhouse!”
“How do you know?”
“I mean… I don’t, but that’s the oldest story I know about the place. Don’t any of you younguns know about the history there?”
“I don’t. Please tell the story!” I called from outside the circle of former Meat Processing workers, causing some of them to glance awkwardly at me.
“Well alright then!” Willard said with a grin that had less than a full set of teeth. “The place was built way back, right after the Civil War ended, when a bunch of immigrants from Germany started migrating to Nebraska, mostly to Omaha. But one feller…”
“Why did Germans come to Nebraska?” Asked a kid who’s name I didn’t know.
“What? I dunno. They just did. Hush. So this guy saw our little town of Fallowveil and its lush fields. He was in the sausage business before, but figured he could set himself up a slaughterhouse to process cows raised locally. Old Fallowveil was superstitious though. They were always wary of outsiders.”
“Why?” The kid asked.
“They just was. Everyone was after the war ended. Things changing fast, bunch of black folks are citizens and building themselves North Mainstreet, and Fallowveil’s weird. We all know that. Always has been.” Nobody could disagree there. “So. Since they were wary? They didn’t want to let Shroeder build. Supposedly you can find old documents with the town's rejection letters to Shroeder hidden away in the office of the old building. He tried for months. Then, with no explanation at all, they suddenly sold him an unused parcel of land. Nobody knows why, and that’s where a lot of folks think the devil’s curse began. They say Shroeder made some kind of deal with a demon to get them to sell the land to him. They’re the ones that made him follow their rules. Everyone remember the rules?”
“Hell, I had to follow those rules,” said Polly. “Most were pretty standard health and safety measures, but some were downright bizarre. 1. No loud noises in the back of the building. 2. One cow will be selected by the owner for personal reasons and won’t be slaughtered with the others. 3. Keep the blood drains clean at all times, but no specialized detergents. 4. Never agitate the animals. 5. Manure will be transported offsite. 6. Anyone caught past the fence line of the old building will be fired immediately…. There’s a bunch more that are all basically fcc regulations, only these days there’s extra.”
“It’s worth it!” Juan piped in. “The work we do there now got us awards! We make some of the best meat in the country! Pay is good too. No offense, friends, but we’re thinking of moving into a house, soon!”
Petunia cried out. “Ahhh Juan! That’s so wonderful! You’ll have places for your baby!” A bunch of others offered Juan their congratulations. There were also expressions of sadness. Thanks to Petunia? This neighborhood is really tight knit.
“We’ll miss you!”
“When do you leave?”
So on and so on. Juan’s a nice guy. I never got to know him, and I kinda wish I had now.
“Good to hear that place is finally shaping up!” Willard said with a small smile. “Maybe the curse on the place is lifting! Back when I worked there, safety and cleanliness were shit. All them extra rules about keeping the place clean, and the cows cared for, they weren’t there back then. Just the weird shit about noise in the back, staying away from the old building, and one cow being taken away every couple of shipments.”
“Can I ask a question?” I asked as Willard trailed off, lost in thought.
“Did you ever work in the place, new guy?” Asked Juan.
“No. I’m just curious about Fallowveil’s spooky stories. Lived here for a while, and heard em, but now I’m asking around. Also, how am I still the ‘new guy?’ I’ve lived here three years!”
“You stopped coming outside after three months!” Petunia called to me.
“Whatcha want to ask?” Willard wondered.
“Well, why is the old building even still there? The place where you all work is the building in the front, right? New building with state of the art equipment? Why keep the dilapidated old building from the 1860s? Anybody know?”
“Ah. That’s an interesting question. I’d guess nobody here knows that answer, right?” Willard replied. There were nods all around. “Nobody alive today worked in that building. Hell, it was fenced off and boarded up when I was a kid. Nobody really knows why it’s still standing. We all have our guesses. Some think it might have something to do with the devil’s curse. Some say the owners hope to cash in on its historic value. Not sure how. The place is a wreck. So it just sits back there.”
“And they’ll fire anyone who gets curious,” Polly added.
“Exactly. That’s one of the rules. Stay away from the old building. But anyway. Let me get back to the story. The old building, that’s the slaughterhouse built by Heinrich Shroeder. He ran the place for about twenty years. Lot of the newly freed black folks would work there. Nothing too nefarious went on back then, but all the same, everyone felt uneasy working there. Just like now, workers swore they saw ghosts. Place gained a reputation for being haunted. That only got worse over the years. Then came the ‘incident.’ I don’t remember the exact year. But at some point some kind of fire broke out in the slaughterhouse. It was after hours so there were no workers there at the time, but there was a herd of cows waiting there overnight. The fire only affected the inside of the building, but it still spooked the cows. They stampeded out of the pen and the next morning the town had cows everywhere. When the people searched the slaughterhouse, they found that not much of the equipment was damaged at all. Somehow some small section of the floor had lit up. And in the middle of it? They found the charred bones of Heinrich Shroeder.”
“What? How?” I asked skeptically. “You know how hot a fire has to be to melt off everything but bone? I don’t. But I know it’s pretty hot.”
“Oh I know. That’s part of the mystery. Nobody knows what happened. It was like some little explosion of heat just burned everything in this one spot on the floor, including Shroeder. The whole thing is unsolved. A mystery. Maybe it was arson. Maybe it was some sort of accident. Who knows? Anyone who works there could tell you though. That place is cursed. Our theory was, Heinrich went back on whatever deal he made to get the land, and the devil came to collect. Either way, the whole town was in shock. Shroeder’s family buried him at Kugler Mill Cemetery, then sold the place and moved to Omaha to be closer to family.”
“Who bought it next?” Asked the kid that kept asking questions.
“Local man named Jefferson. He moved to Nebraska from the south after the war. Man was a slave owner who had a lot of trouble turning a profit after the war.”
“Also a horrible racist!” Petunia added from the grill. “You left that part out one time.”
“I did not! I didn’t think I had to say it! I said he owned slaves! Of course he’s racist!” Willard shot back.
“Just messing with you, you old cowpoke.” We all stopped to chuckle.
“ANYWAY. Jefferson was no great boss. Lot of stories about cruelty to workers and animals if the stories I once heard are true. He kept the name “Schroeder Slaughterhouse to keep some locals from realizing it was him. That’s how he hired a bunch of black folks. There were lots of accidents. Almost everyone who worked there left missing a limb, like me.” Willard held up his hand, and I noticed for the first time that he was missing two fingers on his right hand. “They were still using old band saws. Only took one wrong move” he added thoughtfully. “So Jefferson took over, but he kept all the weird old rules. Nobody knows why. But the place wasn’t a great place to be. Another fire broke out, this one was the Jeffersons son getting drunk on the floor and lighting a lantern. Three workers died there. There were other injuries, and shitty safety standards. One other stampede occurred, which was caused by the equipment falling apart cuz they never bothered with maintenance. You get the idea. All the while, everyone kept hearing tales about the ghosts. They eventually got the idea that the “rules” had something to do with the ghosts. People swore when they were louder in certain parts of the building, they were more likely to feel uneasy. We all know that story.”
“The Shadow” several people said in unison.
Willard nodded. “People thought it was the ghost of Shroeder. Made the rumors about a curse seem more real. The Jeffersons ignored their employees' discomfort for years. Then in the in 30s, another tragedy struck. The owner, Edgar Jefferson, personally came to oversee the installation of a brand new state of the art meat grinder to produce ground beef for local businesses. He was standing nearby, even though the construction crew told him to move away. He was bragging to news outlets and investors about his new machine, and how he wasn’t affected by the depression at all, and then, out of nowhere, a small earthquake hit. The meat grinder came loose from its crane and landed right on top of Edgar. He died immediately. Right in front of the terrified crowd.”
“No way.” Said someone from the crowd.
“Y’all can look this one up if you want. Library is bound to have the old papers. I heard this story from my very first boss. He was just a kid at the time. Said his dad witnessed the whole thing. One second Edgar was boasting, next, he’d been turned into meat jelly.”
“Please don’t ruin the barbecue, Willard” called Petunia.
He just rolled his eyes at that. “To make matters worse, the Jefferson’s local estate mysteriously caught fire a few days later. Nobody could find a cause. Nobody died, thankfully. The remaining Jefferson’s were spooked after that. They sold the slaughterhouse as well as four different cattle farms in town, and moved out of the state.”
“Who was next?” Came the child.
Willard ignored him. “The next person to buy the land was an industrialist who wanted to stake a claim on small town businesses. Rick Manson. He owned a restaurant in California. He bought up the cattle farms and built a new state of the art slaughter house right next to the old one. He was held up by world war 2, but when that ended, he got the place up and running. Nobody knows why he didn’t just tear the old building down and build on top of it. He was the first owner to leave it be. Supposedly, things started out decent under Manson. He brought lots of decent paying jobs raising cows and working in the slaughterhouse, and he kept the rules and added more for safety. Ran it like that for a good thirty years. That’s about when I started working there. Late seventies, early eighties. I can say without any doubt, that any good things people said about Rick Manson? They were lies. The man was a tyrant of a boss, at a time when we actually knew what hard work was.” I felt everyone else groan with me when Willard said that. “The guy used the cheapest equipment he could find and barely ever did maintenance. He also kept hiring immigrants to work the floor. The injury rates were incredibly high, and whatever workarounds higher ups thought they could get away with, they did. A lot of that was on the farms. The local farms were soon forced to use growth hormones, cheap corn feed, and other shady tactics to fatten the cows up faster. They made every effort to turn the small town of Fallowveil into a bigger meat processing plant. We all suffered for it. People died working in that place. Even more people lost fingers. And nobody ever held Manson accountable. Let me remind you, the place was still unbelievably haunted. The shadow was seen by everyone. People started seeing the weird bird too. Everyone was also pretty sure the owners were doing some kind of satanic rituals in the old building at night. There were stories about lights and weird sounds. The story me and my fellow workers believed was that the one cow that got selected and separated every now and then? They were sacrificing it in the old building.”
That proved a bit too much for me. “Wait… hang on. The place is already a slaughterhouse. Cows die there daily. What’s so special about this one cow? Do others not count?”
“Oh how am I supposed to know? You wanted to know what the stories were right? That’s all we got, nobody actually knows what’s going on in there. All we got are guesses. All we know is that someone always showed up, maybe once a week, and picked out a cow, and lead it away. We’re busy workers so no, none of us ever really saw where it ended up. We’re pretty sure it wasn’t put back on a truck. There’s no hidden field that we know of where they’re keeping them. So where the hell do these cows go?”
“I mean… I don’t know. Do they still do that?” I asked.
Juan answered me. “Yes. I’ve seen it happen. Mr. Kurt is the man who picks the cow. Once a week he picks a cow and leads it away from the others. Usually toward the back. Whenever we ask him where the cow went, he would just say ‘that’s private.’”
“Who the hell is Mr. Kurt?” Willard asked.
“He’s basically the general manager. He’s there everyday.”
“What about the new owner? ‘Antoora’ or however you say that?”
“Antuara. We don’t know. Nobody but Mr. Kurt has met him. It’s really strange. Kurt just says Antuara is a bit of a recluse.”
“Wouldn’t the FDA want to know what was happening with these cows?” I wondered.
“All the paperwork is done. The FDA has been here multiple times. They know one cow gets taken, and… they’ve signed off on everything. So I guess it’s nothing illegal.” Juan concluded with a shrug. “It’s really weird.”
“Huh. That place is just a giant old mystery. Does it ever end? You all know what happened to Mr. Manson?”
“Didn’t he die in a fire?” Asked Polly.
“Not just him. My last boss was the one that noticed this. But right before Mr. ‘Antoora’ bought the place ten years ago, it got bought up by a bunch of corporate goons. They wanted to compete with places like Tyson meats. They bought it after Manson's car was found exploded… with him in it, of course. That’s three different owners who were hit by fires, and two that were killed by fires. But that’s not all. Polly? You worked as floor manager while those corpo guys ran the place right? You remember why they ended up selling?”
“I was never told, actually. You and the boys had your stories, but I always figured it was our numbers. We weren’t doing as well. People weren’t going to local butchershops. I know there was one death…”
“It was another fire. And from what I hear it was ruled as an arson! To this day it hasn’t been solved. There were three deaths like that. And a meat packing plant in another state burned down. Not all of those were ruled as arson, but it’s a hell of a coincidence, wouldn’t y’all agree?” Willard said with a grin as he searched everyone’s faces. He had everyone enraptured by his mystery.
“It’s like the place really is cursed. Whoever owns Shroeder slaughterhouse… catches fire?” Said someone.
“Sure seems that way.”
“But Antuara is different. All the equipment is new, and he trained all of us extensively. We take breaks. We’re required to take breaks. And we clean everything. Then there’s the farms he bought. They don’t use any growth hormones or cheap feed. Hell, Mitchel Farm has enrichment toys for them. If the place was cursed, I have to hope it’s lifted now.” Juan spoke with conviction.
“But you still see the shadow and the bird, right? And nobody knows what happens to the one cow?” Willard said simply.
“Yes. That is true. Mr. Kurt has said he’ll look into the things that are causing our discomfort. But what can anyone do about a ghost?”
“Like I said. That place is cursed by the devil. Years of cruel practice, spilled blood, and bad deals. The owners get burned, the workers suffer, but it just keeps churning out meat. And of course, it’s here in the town of Fallowveil, where witches roam free…”
“As do old assholes” added Petunia
“The woods have a monster, the Hotel is in the damn Twilight Zone, and everyone’s seen something unnatural. The place is still cursed, mark my words. Unless they tear that old building down, it’ll probably stay cursed.” With that, Willard concluded his story. He raised a bottle of beer to his lips, but before he could drink, Petunia appeared and swatted the bottle right out of his hand.
“What the hell did I tell you Willard. No more god damn beer!”
“Sorry Petunia.”
The rest of the day was nice. I ate food, hung out with neighbors, played some horseshoes, drank some beer. It was great. The circle of meat packing workers had a few more tales, mostly about the Shadow showing up to scare people, or a weird thing someone saw around the old building.
I wasn’t sure what to think, really. I’ve never actually been to the place. I know that working in a slaughterhouse sounds like a really depressing, dangerous, and messy job that I never ever want. That’s for sure. I had no idea missing limbs were so common.
I looked up some of the stuff Willard said. It seems he wasn’t embellishing much. There really were owners who died in fires and one who got squashed by his own equipment. I can see where belief in a curse comes from. Interestingly, Juan was right too. Fallowveil has received awards for its high quality beef in recent years. The stuff is so good that some of the food network shows have started showing up to do segments and visit local restaurants. Mostly Nerd Burger. Nerd Burger is incredible. The Spicy2 burger is hands down, the best burger in the universe and nobody will tell me otherwise. I didn’t even realize it contracted with Antuara meats, but there you go.
I shared all of this with Trista later that night, and as a result, we went on adventure together. I wonder if it was a date? She wore her regular clothes. Try to imagine a sixties Hippy who got a makeover from a goth. She wore a sarong around her waist that would dance around her legs, with the breeze. It was black as pitch, with a few flowery designs sewn in. She also wore a black hand made tank top, black knee high boots, and her stoner beanie hat that read “total witch.” Seriously. How else can I describe that other than Hippy/goth or Hippy/vampire. She’s weird, and she’s really skinny, but damn it… she’s really pretty. And a lot of fun to hang out with. She might have supplied us with something to smoke that may or may not be legal in this state so I’ll say no more there.
But anyway, we were chatting after sundown, and I told her all about the stories of the Slaughterhouse. “Ugh. That place. Look at me. I’m a hippy. I can’t call myself a vegan, but I still morally oppose the meat industry.”
“Why can’t you call yourself a vegan?”
“I… have a specialized diet.”
“What’s that mean?”
“None of your business, jerk!” She socked my shoulder playfully, which made my whole arm go numb.
“Ow! You are like 140 pounds, max. How are you so damn strong?”
“Maybe you’re just weak. So the slaughterhouse is cursed? Wanna go see it?”
“I… like… Right now?”
“Sure! You don’t work for another hour, right? The hotel can manage without me if I’m late by a few minutes. Come on! I hear you’re more likely to see weird things if you go at night!”
How could I say no? So I drove us to Antuara Meats, formerly known as the Schroeder Slaughterhouse, and got a look at it for the first time in my life. The main building is pretty unremarkable. Just a factory type building next to a big field. We pulled into the parking lot and got as close to the fence as we could, so we could see what we really wanted. The old building.
“Christ. Why is it still standing? Place looks like it should be condemned.” Trista said as we got out and peered through the fencing.
“Yup. Boarded up windows, overgrown ivy everywhere, everything one needs to make a nice creepy atmosphere.”
“How romantic!” She quipped. I’m glad she couldn’t see the confused blushing I did after that. “It definitely smells like blood and rot around here.”
“It does? All I smell is… I’m guessing that’s cow poop?”
“No. It’s metallic. Smells like old blood.”
“You are such a vampire.”
“Har har.”
“Seriously, I don’t smell blood. I can’t see much. It’s too dark.”
“Not much to see. Though I think I see the cow.”
“The cow? What cow? And no way in hell can you see out here. There’s clouds out!”
“Eat your vegetables Mason. It’s good for your night vision.”
“Vampire says what?”
“Nope.”
“So you see a cow? A live cow? Where? Maybe I have a night vision app or something. I dug my phone out of my pocket.
“Yeah, there’s a cow standing out behind the old building. Maybe a hundred yards.”
“I don’t care how good your night vision is, how could you see that far?”
“Will you give it a rest? Not my fault my eyes adjust better than yours.”
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to be an ass…”
“It’s okay Mason, I’m mostly messing with you. There is a cow there though.”
I held up my phone and zoomed as far as I could with the night vision on. She was right. A loan cow stood in an open field behind the slaughterhouse. There were no fences back there, so I wondered if it had gotten loose and just wandered its way to the spot. “Huh. You’re right. There’s totally a cow there. It’s not on the property either.”
“So… you found the missing cow. But I gotta ask. You doing okay? That shit with the Red Nights club was crazy. Anyone would be messed up after that.”
That annoyed me. I’m not sure why. “You think I’m messed up?”
“Well, yeah, that’s why I hang out with you. We’re both messed up. But like… this is seriously messed up. Not fun messed up.”
“Is that the only reason we came out here? Did Petunia put you up to this?” I turned toward her.
“Yes. But no. Petunia is worried about you. And so am I. You’re one of the few regular friends I’ve got. And someone almost shot you.” I saw genuine concern in her violet eyes. She stood there, twiddling nervously with her hands, only partly illuminated by the nearby streetlights, making her pale complexion shine. A strange gust of wind kicked up and blew her wavey Raven black hair prettily across her face.
Oh fuck. You’re getting feels. Stop that. You’re just lonely, and she just feels bad. I wrestled with my thoughts for a moment before replying. “I’m sorry. Maybe I’m just burying it. I’m okay. At least I think I am. Maybe I'm still processing.”
“Uh. Hold that thought, Mason. The cow is gone.”
“What?” I looked back and held up my phone. There was no cow in the field anymore. “Where? How? There’s nowhere for it to go!?”
“I didn’t see anything. It was there a minute ago, now it’s just gone. Wow. That’s creepy. This place really is cursed.”
“Could it have fallen in a hole or something?”
We actually spent a few minutes searching for a trace of the bovine, but we didn’t find anything. There’s no way the thing ran off in just a minute. So what the hell happened to it? It just vanished. Both of us felt a little unsafe after we reached that conclusion. So we headed home and then went off to our respective jobs. Now here I am. A fully grown cow disappeared before my eyes at a haunted slaughterhouse, and somehow I’m still more concerned with whether or not I should ask Trista out or just enjoy her friendship. But that shit is my business.
I did a bit more reading about the slaughterhouse. police have been called to the place over the years, and they found nothing. There’s even been people that signed papers and got to enter the building legally. There was even a ghost hunter once. They didn’t really find anything interesting either. There’s something weird about that place though. No doubt about it. It’s brought tragedy, creepy stories, and delicious hamburger to our town for generations. Given how delicious locally raised beef is? I'm cool with the place doing whatever it’s doing.

2024.04.27 17:05 replifebestlife What a family of four in Germany actually spends on groceries

What a family of four in Germany actually spends on groceries
I do nearly all (95%+) of the grocery shopping and live two minutes from Kaufland. The Kaufland App records all my purchases. Therefore I feel very qualified to describe what a family in Germany might spend a month on groceries.
In March I spent 493,71€ at Kaufland, and in April I have spent 409,99€.
Our children are neither toddlers nor ravenous teenagers. We are not vegetarians. We go out to eat maybe once a month, the children eat lunch at school, my husband brings his, and I buy mine - this amounts to roughly 200 euros a month more in food costs, on top of grocery costs. Unlike most people, we usually eat a hot meal for dinner (the occasionally bread and cold cuts is not less expensive). Most days my husband will drink a single beer, and otherwise we do not buy drinks, aside from refills for the SodaStream. Most of our meals are made from scratch, we do not live in an expensive city (although grocery prices are not as wildly different as they are in the US depending on store and location). I often plan meals around whatever meat and vegetables happen to be on sale, I do not usually buy organic foods, and I think it is unlikely a family of our size can spend significantly less. A meal costs on average about 8-10 euros, breakfast about half that, and then there is fruit and some snacks. Aside from chocolate, I bake, and we don’t buy things like cookies and cakes.
I write down my meal planning, and this is what some of our recent meals have been like: Pecan crusted chicken Chicken French Zürich geschnetzeltes Rot lentil curry with tomatoes Tempura fish and veggies Turkey spinach burgers Groundnut soup with chicken Banh xeo with ground meat Ca kho to Pasta with homemade sauce (1kg tomatoes) and ground meat Pasta with garlic, chili and pecorino Pasta with chicken and Gorgonzola Rindsuppe mit Grießnockerl Beef goulash Knoblauchrahmsuppe/grilled cheese sandwiches Creamy broccoli soup/grilled cheese Creamy leek soup and ground meat Corn and broccoli fritters Quesadillas Chicken wraps Mushroom seitan Injera with doro wat Eggplant Parmesan Fried rice (lots of fried rice - husband lunches)
I hope that sheds some light on this critical issue.

2024.04.26 03:13 HeeeeyHOOPA The Havoc version of “Vultures” is superior why was it not on V1?

Seriously. That fucking track is fucking spooky and I dunno why they didn’t put that arrangement in vultures 1. Those synths are fucking crazy and make the song feel like I’m being led through medieval Germany to a raven’s stone for my execution. The way those notes brood and slowly peak is cinematic, rising to a wail that sounds like a priest giving the condemned their last rites despite them protesting their innocence. The instrumental at the end feels an executioner grilling you as you climb the gallows taking in the crowd before you.
I’ve always known of kanye but have only been a serious fan since pablo. Can anyone with a better knowledge of Kanye’s history explain why this masterpiece of an arrangement wasn’t on the album?

2024.04.25 07:35 Xtremelala16985 Trying to push but crawling

I am trying to push to more stages, i am at a point where i am crawling to get a couple of 10 stages and then give up. Any ideas?
  1. I save everything for tournaments, i just do the fire stone quests and prestige outside any tourney.
  2. In tournament do pet quests, use talents, skills, artifacts update based on compendium and guides, check craft for equipment, choose my best pets, get titan chests with saves gems.
  3. Result progress by 10ish stages
  4. Repeat the process
I am a CS build, do I need to change it up? Try something else, push to complete all artifacts? Redo my equipment? My export below.
Any help or advice would be very good.

Memory Transcription Subject: Tillsi, Dossur Podcaster
Date [standardized human time]: March 3, 2137
I’m not sure what I expected when we walked inside the restaurant, me once again riding on Devin’s shoulder, but a small, divided waiting area with two doors was not it. Well, maybe not a ‘waiting’ area, considering the lack of seats. Then my eyes caught the sight of Venscript of all things on the wall between the doors below some human script. ‘Vegan and Vegan Alien guests to the left, all others to the right’. Devin turned to the left and walked through, and I found myself… somewhat underwhelmed, and disappointed.
I could see that the entire area past the doors was once a single large dining area, but a wall of thick plastic divided the two areas, with maybe only 20% of the restaurant being the ‘vegan’ side. There were a few groups of humans on this side, but more than half the seats were empty. I could see vague shapes through the plastic, and my heart seized for a second when I realized that not all of the shadows were human shadows. Devin must have heard me squeak, and after a second of peering where I was looking he stiffened under me as well. His hand came up under me, as if afraid I would run. Not that it wasn’t a compelling idea, but not on Earth! He spoke up quickly.
“Tillsi, don’t freak out, please! I thought you knew there were arxur refugees here? They’ve all passed empathy tests and have been vetted by the UN. They’re not going to eat you, or Hezlin, or me, or any pets, or anything!” I could see the muscles under his skin tighten as his fist closed, a few ‘pops’ ringing out. “I fought the arxur. I’ve seen what they do. These aren’t those arxur, Tillsi.” He turned to look me directly in my eye, or close enough without his chin knocking me off my ‘seat’. “We can leave if you want to, but I assure you, you're safe here.” I took a deep, shuddering breath as I shook my head.
“No, no, it’s fine I guess… I mean, it’s not, but I guess… I’ll have to get used to seeing them, won’t I? He nodded at me, eyes brightening a bit as I forced myself to remain calm.
“I wouldn’t say they’re common, but Florida seems to agree with Arxur a lot… and from what I hear a lot of arxur, a lot of kids, and their parents if they weren't shitheads, stowed away on our supply transports… Anyways, they aren’t a threat! Want to see where they prepare the food?”
I shook myself a bit, trying to clear the thoughts of being devoured, whole and alive, out of my head. I followed his gaze towards the back and saw a large rectangular device with various depressions, all filled with what looked like burnt vegetables, with a door on the wall behind it. As we got closer a staff member stepped out of the back, and upon seeing us walking towards him, immediately headed back inside. Devin chuckled to himself and I swatted his shoulder with my tail. He looked over and smiled at me.
“He’s seen me and Hezlin before, so I get the feeling he’s about to-ah, there he is.” The younger man had returned, smiling wide as he held the door open.
“Heya, want to check out the prep area, right?” I couldn’t help but notice how at ease he seemed with aliens. Not that I expected fear, or hunger, but at the very least I expected curiosity, but no. He looked at us the same way he looked at Devin, just another person. I felt like I was seeing a small slice of the future, then. A human so desensitized to alien interaction that we were ordinary, even the tiny dossur.
Devin nodded under me and I squeaked out a positive. We strode through the door, and immediately the feeling of heat hit me. I noticed another large rectangular device in the back, this one with rows of evenly spaced metal rods crisscrossing the top, and I could see the waves of heat wafting up out of it. The employee turned back towards me, making a sweeping gesture around him. Overall it was a small room, just large enough for the large rectangle, a large and small sink, one of the strange ‘oven/stove’ combinations I had heard of, and a large ‘walk-in refrigerator’. The employee turned to smile at us as his arm took in the tiny room.
“It’s a bit small, but we keep all of our produce we use on this side separate from the meat side, and that grill-” he pointed at the large rectangle, “has never cooked anything other than vegetables and fruit. So no worries about cross-contamination, since there’s nothing to cross! Whoever works over here does it for the whole day, and doesn’t move to the meat side, just in case.” He turned to look directly at Devin, a sly look on his face. “A raw platter?” Devin grinned at the man.
“Yeah, a tiny one please. I’ll go sit down, grab us some drinks. Thanks!” The younger man waved off the thanks as he started pulling various vegetables out of the refrigerator. Next to the door was a small drink vending station, and Devin quickly poured two dark, fizzy drinks for him and Hezlin. He then turned to look at me, eyebrow quirked. I glared at his stare.
“What?” He smiled at me.
“Do you trust my sense of taste?” I shook my head, ignoring the fake dismay on his face.
“I don’t know about that. I trust you, but your taste buds?” He gave a tiny groan and I chittered to myself. “Just give me what you think I would like, I’ll try it.” He poured one more small drink, a bright-yellow liquid whose scent made my whiskers twitch with its intensity. He led us to a small table near the entrance and placed our drinks down. As Hezlin scrambled into a seat Devin carefully held a hand up to his shoulder, and I leapt down from there to the table. He crouched to look Hezlin, and I guess me, in the eye.
“So, I’m going to grab my order on the other side. You be a good boy and listen to Miss Tillsi.” He turned to look at me a bit more directly. “I’ll be right back, but Hezlin can’t go on that side.” He paused as I squeaked and raised a paw.
“Can I come with you? Dossur don’t have the Cure, so I’ll be fine.” His eyes got wide in shock before he frowned.
“I mean, no you don’t, but you realize the entire other side is mostly meat, right? With arxur?” I nodded firmly and he gave a shake of his head. “Okay, well, fine. Your audience probably won’t appreciate it.” I shook my head as I jumped back on his hand.
“I mean, their the ones watching, they know what's going on.” He crouched a bit as he told Hezlin to wait right there, and then we were gone. As Devin moved through the doors I tried to brace myself as I rode on Devin'’s shoulder, but the second we walked into the ‘meat’ side my nose began twitching violently. That smell! Then I saw the arxur.
Two arxur sat at a table, plates piled high with nearly-raw meats in front of them. They had paused, forks and knives (since when do arxur use utensils!) paused in midair as they saw me. Before my fear chemicals even had a chance to get going, though, I saw their heads duck down, eyes moving away from me. Was that… Was that shame? What?
I didn’t get a chance to ask, or look further, as Devin crossed the room towards the back. On this side there was a whole station set up for payments, and as Devin walked up and began to order I took the chance to glance over. On the other side there had been platters full of a variety of burnt vegetables. Over here?
Meat. Meat of so many different varieties I couldn’t even begin to understand what I was looking at. Long meat sticks, round meat in sauce, round meat without sauce, meat with bones still in it! Meat with bones with a crispy, non-meat crust, others with no crust, and the number of piles of meat available, stars! Behind a plastic shield of some sort a human sawed at a piece of meat as big as her torso, tiny slivers of meat falling away. I felt my stomach churn, but I held it in. The smell helped, though… It smelled so… not good, but definitely not bad! Why?
I had missed Devin’s order and payment, so when he simply grabbed a plate and began walking down the line of platters I squeaked in surprise. He glanced at me briefly, but I just tried to nod at him. He spoke up as he reached for a pair of tongs.
“I know this must not be easy to see, but remember, nothing here ever lived. Now, would you like to know what you're looking at, or is ignorance bliss?” I couldn’t help but chuckle at that, despite how poofed my fur was. And how tight my muscles felt.
“I-I guess? Why not? Enlighten us, oh wise pred-omnivore. W-What are you going to be e-eating?” I couldn’t help how tense my voice was, but apparently Devin picked up on the fact I was trying, because he only smiled gently as he levered the sauced round meat out of the tray with a spatula.
This is a salisbury steak, basically just ground beef that has been cooked with a sauce on it… This is a breaded and fried chicken wing… a half-rack of ribs… and a baked potato.” I was feeling a bit queasy towards the end, as Devin’s plate threatened to weigh nearly as much as I did. That potato, though… I pointed at it with my tail and he grinned.
“I don’t eat meat at home, so this is more of a treat for myself, but if I eat nothing but pure meat I’m just going to want to take a nap. Plus, meat and potatoes used to be kind of a staple. Well, meat, potatoes, and something green. This is me treating myself, though.” I twitched as he added some ‘butter’ to the potato and he glanced over. “Butter comes from milk, so if the cows aren’t happy, we don't get butter these days. It’s harmless. I bet you could eat it, too.” I froze up at that momentarily before slapping his shoulder.
“That’s not funny! Who drinks milk? Eats secretions?” He chuckled as we moved back through the entrance towards the veggie side.
“Every mammal drinks their mothers milk. We just needed another source of food at some point, I guess, and from there, you know…” We sat back down at the table, Devin helping me slide off, before the employee from earlier came over, a small plate in hand. He nodded at me as he carefully sat it down in front of me. It was full of tiny little pieces of fruits and vegetables, along with a similar portion next to them that had been ‘charred’. He smiled as I looked up at him.
“Most aliens who come here haven't eaten our food, or haven't eaten it cooked, so here's a sample platter. Even for us humans, some people don't like carrots, or they hate raw carrots, or cooked ones. This way you get to try everything out beforehand!” He looked positively delighted with himself, and why shouldn’t he? I could feel my tail swishing behind me as I looked up at him.
“Thank you! If there was one vegetable you’d recommend raw and, uhh, ‘charred’, what would it be?” He and Devin both grinned at my wording. The employee reached over, pointing at a piece of orange vegetable.
“Well, my example probably. Carrots are a love it or hate it type thing, but I get the feeling most people enjoy them. There’s bell peppers, some people don’t like the green ones… I gave you some raw zucchini to try, but most humans prefer them cooked… I’ll be honest with you, we don’t grill a lot of our vegetables here, it’s more a meat thing,” I was proud of myself for not flinching, “but we also bake a few dishes… Actually, would you like me to make something for you?” The look in his eyes was somewhat challenging, but he didn’t seem to be mad, so I would ignore it.
“Ah, sure, I guess? I’ll trust your taste buds. Right?” I glanced around, but only the server met my eyes as he squeezed out a yes before ducking back behind the doors. I looked over at Devin, but he only grinned at me. A quick glance at Hezlin showed me the same response: amused, and waiting for something. I flicked my tail behind myself rapidly a few times as Hezlin stood up with his empty plate. I expected Devin to follow him, help him choose his dishes or something, but Devin simply watched as he walked across the room towards the ‘heating station’.
I tore my gaze away from Hezlin momentarily as Devin twisted his head to look at me. Those large orbs should have sent me running, according to the Federation… however, the only thing I picked up from them was worry.
“Tillsi are you, and I guess your audience, going to be… okay with this?” He gestured towards his meat-leaden plate. “I mean, this is meat. I’m not ashamed to eat it, but are you going to be able to handle it?” I chittered a bit as I reached for an un-burnt ‘carrot’ from my sample plate.
“I think if I was going to run away, or my audience was, it would have already happened.” I took a large bite out of the chunk of raw ‘carrot’, and as I began to grind it down my expression brightened. “Wow, this is good!” I reached for the piece of charred- I mean, grilled carrot. It was so much softer, and the burnt taste that was added? I found my tail wagging to the extreme as I devoured the round piece of grilled carrot, Devin looking on with an amused expression. Hezlin was absorbed in his own mound of grilled vegetables, but before I could get a good look at them I followed Devin’s finger downwards as he pointed out various vegetables and fruits to me.
“That cook likes to start with the fruits, so here’s what they have here. Honeydew apple, pineapple, anjou pears, and some watermelon, that's actually a nice little platter…” I hoped my audience caught the hungry look Devin threw at my plate of fruit. I knew he wasn’t a bloodthirsty monster, and hopefully most of my audience didn’t, either, but still! The sight of a human almost visibly salivating over fruit was good optics. He pointed to the lower portions.
“There's a carrot, which it looks like you enjoy? I love them raw or cooked, but the best way to eat them is boiled in orange juice… it’s more of a dessert at that point, but is so good!” His face lit up and I couldn’t help but wonder how that would taste. We had bought a few oranges, but we couldn’t exactly stop at every stall to get a sample, right? So I had no idea what flavorful secrets the strange, color-named fruits contained. His face settled a bit as his finger moved.
“There’s zucchini, most people don’t like them raw unless they're thinly shredded, but cooked? Not my favorite veggie, but I still enjoy them… There’s some kale, it's a leafy veggie thats really good for you, and personally I love it a bit charred and wilted to balance out the bitterness if I’m just eating kale instead of putting it in something…eggplant. I don’t know anyone that eats it raw, but eggplant is a decent, uhh… not meat replacement, but it's thick and tough enough that vegans use it for their main dish, if you will… uhh…” He looked extremely flustered before his finger pointed towards the last pieces. “Those are red and green bell peppers, raw they’re used on sandwiches and some salads, but cooked? Well, they fit into so many categories when you add to them… You can use them in a lot of savory dishes.” I leapt on that, my tail thumping behind me.
“So is savory the flavor I got from the, uhh, grilled carrot?” He frowned a bit in thought as he nodded.
“I guess so? I’ve never tried to identify the flavor profile of ‘savory’... I mean, I get mostly meat but there's a few veggies I would call savory… Mushrooms for sure… Meat is always kind of savory, unless you overcook it-” He paused at the look of confusion on my face (and my ears).
“Regardless of what type it is, meat is usually going to be denser than vegetables… and because it’s so dense, we have to chew it for a long time. Remember-” He smiled widely, teeth on display “-we don’t really have sharp teeth, and we chew with our flat molars mostly. We get a lot more of the flavor than you would from vegetables.” He pulled on a pair of disposable gloves he had taken from the entrance earlier and grabbed the ‘fried chicken’ before taking a large bite out of it, sharp(ish) front teeth flashing as they cut straight through the flesh, right alongside the bone... I noticed that while I still flinched, Hezlin had merely glanced up momentarily.
I couldn’t help but notice the look of pleasure that erupted across Devin’s face as he chewed, the way his shoulders relaxed a tiny bit, the way his eyes closed as he chewed. Which was for longer than I had been expecting, but he had just told me why, hadn’t he? His eyes met mine and I saw a slight ‘smirk’ slash across his mouth before he continued to eat his meat... I shook myself a bit as I turned my attention back to my plate. Time to explore!
Halfway through the meal, right as I neared the end of my sample platter, the employee from earlier returned, keeping a dish out of my sight as he smiled down at me.
“Like I said earlier, we don’t grill a lot of vegetables, not as much as meat, but we do cook with them a lot! Grilling vegetables isn’t the most, ah, expressive way to bring out the flavor. So!” He put the plate down near me with a flourish. “These are mini sweet peppers stuffed with couscous, black beans, diced tomatoes, green onions, and some spices. We do the same dish with bell peppers, which are usually the size of a human fist, but I thought this might be a bit easier for you to eat.” His smile was wide, and I found myself somewhat touched that he had made a single dish just for me.
Four tiny halves of a hollowed-out, stuffed ‘pepper’ sat there, two yellow and two bright orange. The smell coming from the warmly-colored filling, though! My tail went rigid as my nose twitched wildly. I heard a chuckle from Devin, but I ignored him for the moment, turning to fully take in the employee.
“Thank you so much, you didn’t have to do all that for me! It smells amazing though!” He grinned at my enthusiasm, a blush creeping up his neck, before being called away to another table. I didn’t hesitate another second as my paws snatched up one of the bright orange pieces. Which I then immediately dropped, as the heat was simply too much for me. I looked up to see both Devin and Hezlin grinning at me. I playfully glared at them a bit.
“I’ve never eaten food that was still hot! Warm yes, not hot!” I carefully grabbed the piece again, blowing on the end for a good while before I dared to take a bite. It was still hot, but by the stars! I couldn’t stop the absolutely juvenile squeal that erupted from me, but I barely noticed as I chewed. The pepper was sweet, the ‘couscous’ and its fillings were so flavorful! I hadn’t exactly had a poor, limited diet before. I had eaten exotic spices from many different worlds. The spicy, tangy, sweet, savory taste that filled my mouth, though? That level of complexity?
Never.
I barely noticed myself ravenously devouring the rest of the pepper, and then the next one. On my third piece I paused. The yellow was less sweet, but almost tangy? That wasn’t quite right, though… The rest of the stuffed peppers disappeared quickly and I groaned heavily. I was full, oh so full, but I wanted to eat more! I looked up to see Hezlin back at the ‘buffet’, Devin tearing tiny pieces of sauced meat off small bones. He smiled at me, which was a bit disconcerting with his mouth dirty like that, and gestured towards my untouched drink. He swallowed heavily before speaking.
“You’re gonna regret it if you don’t have any fresh lemonade. They make it here daily.” I was thirsty, actually. Most of the Federation didn’t use that much salt in their cooking. Not that I was complaining! The results spoke for themselves louder than I could ever yell. My tongue still felt like it was in shock, a shock which only deepened as a sweet, tangy liquid assaulted it. Within moments the lingering taste of the meal was gone, replaced by a sourness that almost made me pucker my lips up. Devin was grinning at me again, only half of the ‘baked potato’ left on his plate.
“I can only assume that means it’s delicious?” I nodded eagerly.
“The grilled vegetables were good, most of them, but he was right, it was all very plain with no sauces. Those stuffed peppers, though! That was the best thing I’ve ever eaten in my life! The drink is delicious, too! My mouth almost wants to pucker from the sourness, but the sweetness is so intense it mellows it out!” I found my eyes drifting towards Devin’s potato briefly, but eww, no butter, no thank you.
Hezlin returned, awkwardly carrying three small bowls mostly filled with some sort of solid mass. He placed them on the table between our seats (not that I was using mine, but still) before turning his face up towards me with a wide smile. A smile that, as odd as it was to see on a gojid, warmed my heart.
“Miss Tillsi, I got us some icecream! I know you haven't had any before so I got some of each. This one is chocolate, this one is vanilla, and this is strawberry! That one’s the best here!” His enthusiasm was infectious, so even as my chat pinged at me I was smiling, grabbing the small (but still huge) spoon he handed me. I glanced over at my chat for the first time in a while and froze. I looked over at Devin uncertainly, but he just chuckled.
“It’s made from oats, a type of grain. They make a milk substitute out of oat that I actually really like, but for this? Don’t worry. The whole point of this being partitioned off-” his arm swept in a gesture, taking in the long sheet of plastic “-is that there is only vegan stuff over here. There's real ice cream over there, but I’m not picky.” He pointed towards the small bowls. “Go ahead and try them all, I’ll have what you two don’t eat. I need to go wash off a bit.” He pulled his gloves off and stood, carrying his plate as he made his way back to the other side, and presumably the bathroom.
I took the chance to glance at my chat. Recent polls showed that most of my stream hadn’t enjoyed seeing arxur, or that much meat, or anything over there. Devin had dropped in popularity a bit after being shown eating a bunch of meat, but Hezlin was currently, according to my chat, the cutest pup in the galaxy. His eagerness to show off his favorite foods was endearing. Speaking of…
At Hezlin’s urging I took a small bite from the ‘vanilla’ bowl, my entire coat poofing out from the intense, unexpected chill. Then the flavor hit my tongue, and I couldn’t hold in a moan of enjoyment. I bloomed heavily under my fur, but quickly took a bite from the others. The strawberry was good, but stars, the chocolate! I quickly began to devour the bowl, Hezlin grabbing the strawberry one. Hezlin had already gone for a second bowl of strawberry by the time Devin got back, dropping into his chair with a dull thud. He quickly grabbed the remaining bowl and spoon, and in mere moments had practically inhaled the ‘vanilla’. I stared at him in shock over the melted remains of mine as he smiled eyes wide and innocent.
“What?” I shook my head at the childish expression on his face. As Hezlin slid into his seat Devin raised one of his eyebrows as he looked at me.
“Enjoy some cheap Earth food?”
I finally cut the stream as we got back into the car, a long, apparently boring drive ahead of us according to Devin. Hezlin fell asleep almost as soon as he was strapped into his car seat, light squeaks coming from the back seat. As the van pulled out and I settled into my crash bulb I asked a question that had been on my mind for awhile.
“Devin, do you know what a dilf is?”

So, fleeing a 20,000 gold bounty on his brother Cyrus’ head, Dorian fled across the sea from Marquet through Emon, and met up with his friends, the remnant Crown Keepers, in the seedy little casino town of Kymal. You all synced up, caught up a little bit, immediately got into trouble because you needed to steal a fur for reasons that are beyond me as a DM to understand. And ran into a new, uniquely gifted and very powerful friend, Morrighan. After overhearing a bit of the Crown Keepers’ money woes, you figured you might as well combine your efforts. Mor is here to clean out this casino after telling the group that she has made her way through every other casino in the city. But this casino is different. It is the original casino in the city. It’s the most well-guarded, and by far the most prosperous. So you teamed up with this group and began your heist by stealing a key to a penthouse in hopes of finding master blueprints. It went pretty badly. You broke into the penthouse regardless, got into a big fight, and then blew up the room. So, Mor, they’re effective. They’re not subtle, but they can still be useful. You got the blueprints, you’ve retrieved the treasures hidden under some tiles inside the penthouse, and you, specifically, discovered the most interesting secret of The Maiden’s Wish, that a piece of the architecture of this place, the sky deck, a glass bottom overhanging bar that looks out over the vast mud and rocky nothingness of Kymal, shouldn’t have been able to stand for the decades it’s been around. That’s because it’s magically reinforced with a very rare, very powerful magical stone called brumestone. So, you know that the streets are full of Nameless Ones stopping everyone from leaving via conversions and threats of death and pledges of fealty, but if you play this right, you can rob the vault, get up to the sky deck, and make the craziest escape ever into the night. That is where we find ourselves. But before we actually pick up gameplay, I want to talk about a new mechanic I want to introduce for today’s poodle. Each of you has a coin. You can call it a Fragment of Foresight, you can call it a Heist Coin, you can call it a Poodle Pip. What it’s called doesn’t matter. What it does is the interesting thing. Now, we all know that planning is the most interesting and easy thing to do in Dungeons & Dragons. So in lieu of having, you know, a four-hour session of you planning your heist and then it not going at all like that, you’re just doing your heist. You’ve already made your plans. As you walk through and face down the obstacles, you can play your Poodle Pip and explain to us how you already accounted for this obstacle. I’ve taken this from one of my favorite RPGs called Blades in the Dark. It’s a very cool heist-based criminal system, and they elided a lot of the having a plan with starting in medias res, and you describe how you’re prepared for this. So I want you all to feel prepared and effective, because we’re about to begin, but not quite yet. You’ve made your way out of the penthouse. You’re down, you’re safe, and you’re all together. So you have a little time, you need to rest, but you have rooms here and you have a plan.

2024.04.17 20:13 Ok-Horror8740 Appetite returning

I'm not sure if it's really my appetite returning or if this is just me being hungry and needing to eat. Most days I guess I eat around the 1000 calorie or less mark. On weekends I do sometimes eat 2000. The last 2 weeks or so I've been hungrier and hungrier. Today I needed to eat like I was ravenous. Devoured 2 ham and grilled cheese sandwiches 😭 and didn't really feel that full afterwards. Ugh

My Discord
Buy me a cup of coffee (if you want)
Chapter Seventeen:
I’d never been on a ship before. Sure, I’d watched a few at Naval Base Kitsap when I dated a girl serving her country. But it’s not like civilians are invited to come aboard. And those ships were much different than the Jolly Roger I now found myself inside of.
The captain’s quarters were more spacious than I expected. Five glass lanterns hung lit throughout the cabin with most of the light concentrated on a large round desk in the center of the room. Captain Smee sat behind the desk in a plush red chair nailed to the floor. Behind him, large windows covered in red curtains tried to let in even more light. Smells of lumber and parchment filled my nostrils as I gazed around.
To my left sat a large hammock and a chest of the captain’s personal effects. A small painting of a man with long charcoal hair and a hook for a hand hung near the entrance with several knives sticking out from it. The painting looked rather old and worn.
If I expected squeaky floorboards when Smee set my birdcage down on the table, I came away shocked. His floor was quiet as a mouse with each step he took.
The captain wasn’t rough in his carrying the cage, either. He didn’t swing it or jiggle things around so I’d fall into the bars. He carried it securely with a tight grip.
I watched the man reach into his heavy oak chest, fetch a glass and a bottle with a “Captain’s Hooch” label, and stroll back to the table without eyeing me once.
He poured himself a drink, took exactly two sips, and sighed.
“You know, Sylva. Can I let you in on a secret? I hate this place.”
That wasn’t the opener I expected from a captain who had every ability to torture and kill me for a book I didn’t possess.
“Why?” I asked, daring to find my voice.
Smee didn’t look upset at my asking. He just took another drink before answering.
“Too many fucking birds. Everywhere I look, there are crows cawing through the trees, magpies hopping through the grass, and yes, ravens, that perch on every building, like they’re always watching. It leaves me feeling itchy and cramped. This is a big capital city, and I feel like I can’t take three steps without smelling or hearing those goddamn birds. It’s maddening.”
I hadn’t really noticed that until Smee brought it up. But he was right. Whether it was jays, jackdaws, treepies, or nutcrackers, birds seemed to fill every inch of this city, regardless of the elves they flew over.
“The Crocodile Court and Never Court aren’t like this. They’re smaller islands, and most of the birds were hunted to death years ago. You can actually find places of quiet. So you can understand why I’m eager to retrieve my king’s book and be on my way. The weeks I’ve tarried here have been more trying than anything else in my career as a captain, save for killing James and taking the ship, of course.”
Smee turned his head sharply to the right and cracked his neck.
“Yup. That’s the good stuff. Personally, I don’t give a rat’s ass about some old tome, Sylva. When you and Pann broke into the king’s library and smuggled it out, I found it rather amusing. But the Crocodile King, like many fae, is rather possessive of his treasure. So, I was forced to halt my efforts to seize the Never Court, and sent to retrieve the accursed book.”
Gods, this book has inconvenienced more people than I imagined, I thought.
Audibly gulping, I pondered what I would say. Would he believe that I used to be human? Could I tell him the book was in Washington? Would he even know where that was?
“So, let’s have it, then. The Never Prince claims you stole the Book of Tevaedah from him and hid it, a brilliantly executed double-cross, a maneuver of which, I’m a big fan. Now, I could employ all manner of discomfort to make you tell me where it is. Gods know that I broke any number of James’ men, ripping out toenails, pouring liquid fire into their eyes, choking them with their own hair, etc.
“But torture takes time to guarantee results. And I’m nothing, if not, a practical man. Therefore, I propose a simple bargain. Tell me where to retrieve the tome. And when I have it, I’ll dump you onto the docks, sail away, and our paths will likely never cross again. I’ll even pin the entire theft on Pann. How does that sound?”
After how quickly Pann had given me up, that sounded like a pretty good deal. But if I told Smee where to find the book in the human world, would he send men to retrieve it? Sylva probably deserved to deal with that level of bullshit, but Blake certainly didn’t. And I was under no pretenses Smee’s men would make distinctions between ex-fairies and full-time mortals when it came to getting in the way of their job.
Or maybe Smee’s men wouldn’t go to the human world. Could they even return to the mortal world?
I guess that was a risk I’d have to take telling the truth.
“Captain, I’m sorry to tell you this, but I’m not Sylva.”
“Oh?” he asked, neither angry nor amused. He took another drink of his hooch while he waited for me to spin my yarn.
“My name is Anola. I’m a former human that Sylva used the Book of Tevaedah to trade lives with. Two weeks ago, she interrupted my wedding and stole my body, dumping my soul into hers. Shortly after, Sylva tossed me down a hole in a tree, and I fell into Faerie. I assume she’s still living my life back in the mortal world and has the book there. But I can’t be sure as long as I’m here.”
The captain leaned back and stroked his chin.
“That’s an interesting tale, tiny piskie. I hear many stories sailing from port to port under the banner of the Crocodile King. This world is filled with much madness. And for a time, I found it entertaining. But I eventually came to realize madness is only ever really fun for the people on top. It tends to make life more difficult for underlings. That’s why I decided to stop being one.”
“So you believe me?”
Smee shrugged.
“What you say is possible, I suppose. The book is supposed to be an extremely powerful relic made by a witch long since dead. Or, you could be yanking me. Seems the best odds I give it are 50/50, you’re speaking the truth.”
My heart sank. What would he do if he decided I wasn’t telling the truth? Shaking the birdcage and throwing me into the iron bars would be just the start of what this man was capable of.
Perhaps what I found most terrifying about Smee was his brand of evil was quiet and calculating. In the cartoon, his former boss was always portrayed as a loud, irate man who squandered every chance at defeating Pann due to his impetuous nature.
Smee didn’t have that. If he wanted to be cruel, he simply would be. There’d be no need to make a show about it, whether he was hanging a man by his entrails or cutting out tiny pieces of a prisoner’s tongue every day until they broke.
I opened my mouth to speak when my runeeye activated without warning, a loud popping noise filling the birdcage and sending a rattle of glamour that dispersed upon hitting an iron boundary.
Looking at the iron cage around me, I saw natural glamour in the air poisoned by the very presence of this corrosive substance. The bars took on an extra visible layer of cruelty within my runesight, appearing less like wire and more like knotted coal and rust.
Wait a minute, I thought. I’ve seen something like this before.
Smee’s words snapped my attention back to the pirate captain.
“That’s an interesting look. Are those tiny stars in your eye going to help you remember something else about the book’s location?” Smee asked, draining his glass.
Before I could answer, a new vision spread before me, a chalkboard-sized ghostly parchment with scribbles that looked like my handwriting scattered everywhere. Words like “Kilgara” and “Raven Queen” hovered over lines that slowly connected paragraphs and other tiny pieces of information.
I glanced at different pieces and found it hard to process the parchment as a whole. This felt like seeing medieval Jarvis lay out everything I knew about Faerie and my place in it so far.
Tracing lines passed from Kilgara to Raven Queen and then circled the words “boon” and “Queen Bon-Hwa.” Details of bargains and favors I hadn’t considered passed before my eyes.
Other words appeared in my periphery like “war” and “Fist of Kairn.”
Everything intersected closer to the end where “chaos” became the biggest word of all. But it all started with the phrase “iron sickness.”
“That’s a queer look you’re wearing, little elf. Are you looking at something my mortal eyes can’t see?”
He sounded perfectly patient, but under his tone was a hint of malice that promised pain if I didn’t start making more sense soon. Curiosity could easily be replaced with animus.
But amid all the words and information I saw on this. . . let’s call it a specter roadmap, one was noticeably missing. . . Smee.
“You’re not a part of this story,” I said, my mouth feeling like it was on autopilot again, as it had been when I stood before Varella. “At least, not for much longer. You are an insignificant bump on the path to much more grand and troubling issues. Check your place, mortal. For the lakes and seas, you’ve called home, despite being an unwelcome guest, will soon be rid of you. Oh, he who plays at being a pirate captain, you will soon find yourself plucked from Faerie as a splinter from an agitated thumb.”
Coughing and scratching my neck, I looked up to see Smee raising an eyebrow.
“Well, that’s not a language I’ve heard spoken before. Would you care to enlighten me on how a human would speak in a tongue like that?”
Instead of answering, I stared through the polished wood of Smee’s bedroom wall and found a massive concentration of glamour standing on the docks outside. The glamour writhed and twisted about like an impatient serpent.
“Anola? Are you done speaking to me?”
“There’s no need for us to continue talking. Queen Bon-Hwa is here.”
The captain raised his eyebrow.
“And how can you be sure of that?”
Before he could ask a second time, a knock at the door interrupted our conversation. Smee grimaced.
“Come in.”
A shirtless man with skin the color of rice walked in through the door. His brown shorts were tattered, and a large scar ran across his ribs. Curly red hair bounced around him as he walked toward us.
“What is it, Starkey?”
“We found her, sir, exactly where you said. What do you want us to do?”
Smee grinned, and I shivered as that calculating cruelty revealed itself in stronger form. His eyes seemed to grow while the captain pondered his options for whatever it was his crew had found.
“Tied her up below deck. Remember those chains I told you to fetch?”
“Aye, sir. I’ll see it done.”
With that, Starkey turned to leave. Just before he exited the captain’s quarter, he turned back toward us.
“Oh, and sir? The Raven Queen is standing on the docks outside our ship. She hasn’t said anything yet. But I thought you should know.”
Smee glanced back at me before dismissing his crewmember.
He thought for a moment while I dismissed my runeeye. My vision returned to normal, ghostly parchment fading from sight.
“I suppose we should go have a chat with the queen, Anola. Perhaps she’s come to bargain for your life.
Just as carefully as he carried my birdcage in, the captain lifted me from the table and started toward the docks.
***
Outside the air was heavy as a thick layer of fog slowly pedaled into the port. Things grew hazy as I was able to spot the outline of other ships and the buildings of Perth but little else. The lake hid herself and her threats beneath a billowing cloud of ghosts.
Queen Bon-Hwa stood on the dock with her arms crossed, most of her body hidden beneath a soft red cloak. Her crown remained visible despite the fog’s best efforts to hide everything.
Captain Smee walked down a gangplank as the smell of lakewater and damp wood washed over me. He stopped about 15 feet short of the queen.
“Well, your grace, it’s a surprise to see you here outside my humble vessel. Have you come to threaten me or sink my ship?”
Bon-Hwa shook her head.
“I’m not actually here for you, Captain Smee. I merely decided to take a stroll down to the docks to get some fresh air. Sometimes the palace can be a bit stifling. You’re the one who walked out here to greet me, yes? I didn’t summon you.”
Smee grinned at that.
“How’s that stained glass window in your throne room? I was so sad to see such a lovely work of art destroyed.”
Bon-Hwa’s red-painted lips didn’t betray her with a grimace or even a small frown. She remained perfectly still, cloaked with an impartial expression befitting a ruler whose secrets had secrets.
“There’s no need to worry yourself. Our artisans have repaired it and restored the window to its full glory. I sat beneath it just yesterday holding court.”
“So, if you’re not here for me, can I assume this piskie of yours is free to remain in my. . . let’s call it. . . hospitality?”
Bon-Hwa’s eyes glance down toward me. I did not plead for help but instead stood frozen, measuring my breaths so as not to feed the pirates with a display of fear.
“It’s a curious thing. Our royal pet and apprentice arcanist leave the palace without so much as a note. And then one goes missing and the other appears in a birdcage under your very hand.”
Smee shrugged.
“That IS a curious thing,” was all he offered in the way of response.
And before any more vaguely threatening words could be exchanged, a deafening boom rattled the harbor, displacing the stillness of its mist. A second later, a cannonball took out a chunk of the topmast on Smee’s boat. The Jolly Roger appeared to shutter and groan as wood splinters fell over us like rain, and a crew of pirates shouted and dove for cover.
The captain’s previously calm demeanor faded as he turned to examine the damage to his ship. Another cannon fired in the distance, this time taking out a large window in Smee’s quarters.
“What are you doing?!” Smee snapped at the queen, dropping my cage to the dock. I stumbled forward but managed to stop just before iron bars scorched my face.
The queen cocked her head.
“What do you mean? I’m simply out here to get some air.”
“Bullshit. And the cannon fire tearing my ship to pieces?” Smee yelled.
Queen Bon-Hwa merely rubbed her chin.
“That IS a curious thing,” she said.
A third boom in the distance echoed just before a cannonball killed Starkey, taking off most of his upper body and crashing into the railing. That last shot tore a large hole in the ship’s starboard side.
“Captain! It’s the Scoundrel! I see their flag. The Scoundrel is firing upon us,” one of the crewmembers yelled toward Smee.
He hissed and turned to glance into the fog as a smaller vessel came into view only briefly. The captain ran his fingers through his hair and swore. Then he swore again.
But at last, an idea seemed to dawn on him as he turned to Queen Bon-Hwa with a look of fury.
“You have pirates in your port. Why aren’t you attacking them?!”
“I assure you, Captain Smee, if the pirates fire upon any part of my ships, docks, or city, I will unleash my full wrath upon them.”
“We’re registered merchants docked in YOUR port! Your duty as queen compels you to offer us safe harbor and protection to do business so long as we’re anchored here.”
Queen Bon-Hwa seemed to consider this before shrugging.
“You’re right, Captain Smee. I do owe registered merchants docked in my city protection. Of course, vendors docked in Perth are also required to provide detailed cargo manifests, and I couldn’t help but notice you have yet to turn in any paperwork. As such, before you are issued merchant protections, I’ll need to board and inspect your ship to make sure you’re not carrying contraband. Will you surrender to my inspection?”
I couldn’t help but grin and admire the woman who’d defeated a pirate in her port simply with words. And, perhaps, a shady message to some other pirates who owed her a favor. I watched Smee clench his fists and grind his boots into the wood below. Sweat broke out over his face as more cannon fire pelted his ship.
“Captain! What are your orders?!” a panicked crew member called out.
Smee swore again and stomped his foot.
“Fine. It’s not like I’m leaving empty-handed. I will be departing at once, Queen Bon-Hwa. Thanks for your hospitality,” he said, turning to walk up the gangplank and mercifully forgetting all about my birdcage.
“The pleasure is all mine. Safe sailing and smooth seas, captain,” Bon-Hwa said.
The captain barked orders at his men who flew about the deck in a fury of activity.
“Take us out, Damien! We’ll lose Captain Selena Karmen in the fog. Bank hard to the south. With enough distance, even her felinae huntress won’t be able to hit us.”
I watched with Queen Bon-Hwa as the Jolly Roger took on more fire, returned a few shots that all vanished in the mist, and then faded from our site, just like the Scoundrel, which was, theoretically giving chase. Or maybe it was anchored just offshore. I couldn’t tell in all this fog.
Bon-Hwa fished a brass letter opener from under her cloak and unlatched the door to my birdcage with it. I exited the accursed cage and flew up to her shoulder, taking care not to step on her silky black hair or the red ribbons trailing out from her hair.
“Are you hurt, apprentice arcanist?”
I shook my head.
“Not really. I burned my hands. They’re throbbing a little, but Smee was surprisingly delicate with me.”
Bon-Hwa looked me over closely and said, “He was a decent opponent for a mortal. We’ll have a healer take a look at your hands when we return to Featherstone.”
I nodded.
“Thank you, your grace. The, um, pirates who fired upon Smee? Were those the Scoundrels you asked my teacher to summon?”
She nodded as we turned back toward the palace.
“They are pirates who prey upon other pirates. Their captain also owed me a favor.”
I nodded and found myself gazing at Bon-Hwa with renewed respect and maybe a little awe. Whether she said so or not, I wholeheartedly believe she came out here to guarantee my safe return. At least in part.
She happened to glance over at me.
“Something on your mind?”
I shook my head, not wanting to sound like an idiot.
The queen let out a small grin, and we returned to the palace where I was promptly tackled, hugged, kissed, and scolded by Barsilla.
With the queen otherwise occupied, Barsilla and I flew back to her room where she proceeded to pin me against a wall.
“What is it with you?! The dire crocs weren’t enough of a heart attack for me? You gotta get captured by pirates too?” she yelled.
Her eyes blazed something fierce, but I could tell it was to cover her overwhelming joy that I’d returned safely.
“I had Sierra with me,” I offered, fighting a smile.
“A roasted potato would have been more reassuring company!” Barsilla yelled, tightening her grip on me.
“I’m sorry. I just wanted to help find Pann. Obviously, everything went to shit, but I made it back safe and sound.”
Barsilla jabbed a finger in my face.
“If you EVER do anything stupid like that again, I will have you leashed at my side at all hours of the day.”
When she was finished yelling at me, Figaro took a turn growling and stamping her paw into the ground for several seconds, unloading her frustrations with my lack of planning. It was kind of adorable until she used that paw to pin me to the ground and huff for several minutes.
I sighed. But then I remembered something important and turned to Barsilla once I was allowed to stand again.
“I need you to take me to Featherbrooke,” I said.
***
Flying before Varella, I couldn’t help but realize this entire mess in Faerie began with her attempting to kill me, believing I was a spy. And now, here I was, about to ask if she trusted me for something that might very well get me killed.
Staring at the bedridden queen with my runeeye, I found it easily once more. The speck in her neck.
“I see you’ve regained the use of your wings, little piskie. And I’ve been informed you are now an apprentice arcanist. It seems good fortune has found you at last,” Varella said.
I didn’t want to do this. If she didn’t kill me, it was still going to be gross.
“Your grace. I’ve also gained some use and control over my runeeye. And it has revealed to me what’s blocking your queensglamour from returning.”
Varella fell silent. She turned to everyone in the room and said, “Leave us, please.”
Vyzella, Kit, and Barsilla all did as she requested and shut the door.
“You’re speaking much more boldly than the last time you stood before me,” Varella said. “What’s your theory on while I remain so weak? I’m interested to hear your diagnosis.”
The queen spoke like she didn’t believe me at all. And I frowned, wondering if doing this was entirely necessary. Bon-Hwa seemed to be handling the throne better than I imagined Varella ever could. If it were up to me, I’d leave her in charge.
I sighed. Recalling the parchment I saw in my runeeye and how important the words “Kilgara” and “iron sickness” were. In the coming war amid a destabilized Faerie, Varella’s strength would be needed to preserve this court.
“Do you trust me?” I asked, pulling out a dagger Barsilla had hesitantly given me upon request.
Varella’s grin grew sinister and downright horrifying, her eyes enveloping the very tone a dark queen of Faerie should carry. She sat in her bed, not moving an inch.
“This just got interesting. Do I trust you? Not particularly. But it seems you’re set on a particular course of action. So I’ll give you 30 seconds to do whatever you’re thinking. And after that, if I don’t like your choices, I’ll kill you once and for all. How does that sound?”
Trying not to let my heart rattle so loud that Varella would hear, I simply sighed again and nodded.
“Go ahead, little piskie.”
I flew over to her and landed on the bedridden queen’s collarbone. Steadying myself on her neck, I heard a low laugh escape her lips.
Running my fingers over the tiny piece of iron embedded in Varella’s neck, I flinched. This was going to suck.
Best get it over with, I thought, tightening my grip on the borrowed blade.
I did my best to make a narrow cut in Varella’s neck, and she didn’t flinch or hiss in pain. Nor did she swat me. How many seconds did I have left? Too few to waste on counting.
Gingerly reaching my fingers into the wound and trying not to barf as my stomach did exactly 12 flips, I sucked in a quick breath and braced myself for pain. Blood ran down the queen’s skin and onto my sandals and dress. Still, she did not flinch.
I knew exactly when the fingers on my right hand made contact with the speck of iron. Searing pain raced up and down my fingers. It felt like I’d reached into a grill at a cookout and grabbed one of the hot coals. Only now instead of burgers cooking, it was the palm of my hand.
The blood started to sizzle along with me as I braced my feet against the base of Varella’s neck. And for the first time, she gasped and grimaced.
Not wanting to budge, the iron speck seemed to be actively resisting my pull, and the Raven Queen was starting to sweat as she clenched her fists against the comforter.
Gritting my teeth and grabbing the speck even tighter, I screamed as molten magma threatened to melt through my palm and start roasting each bone in my fingers.
“Get out, you fucking rock!” I yelled, grabbing my torched wrist and pulling with all of my might.
With the sickening pop of a cyst bursting, I yanked the iron pebble free. It was a tiny thing, fitting into even my closed fist. But the pain was too much, and as I fell backward, I lost my grip on the spec. It landed on the floor and clattered over against the wall.
By this time, the door burst open, and in walked Vyzella with wide eyes. I only caught a glimpse as I fell headfirst onto the bed, my hand still smoking.
When I finally righted myself, I noticed my right hand was charred gray.
If there’s one thing I miss about being human, I thought, hissing in pain.
Glancing up at Varella with runeeye, I saw her queensglamour roar back all at once. Her eyes turned solid violet, and the queen’s back straightened.
A wicked grin broke out across her face as she took a deep breath and muttered, “Yes. . . yes! That’s it!”
With little warning, she suddenly stood, and I watched a tidal wave of violet glamour surge through her body like a shower that finally has a full hot water tank to draw from.
The Raven Queen’s eyes finally returned to normal as Vyzella said, “It looks like you’re back in business, as the mortals would say.”
She stretched while Vyzella went and fetched a bandage for her neck and tweezers to grab the speck of iron.
Afterward, Varella picked me up and held me near her face.
“Well done, Anola. It seems you’ve surprised me, after all. With my full strength returning, I can finally return to Featherstone.”
“Happy to have been of service,” I said, still wincing as I held my hand.
“I’m inclined to grant you a boon for your service here today. What favor would you ask of a fae queen?”
I wanted to say lots of things. A fucking soaking tub for my hand. An apology for nearly killing me. An enchanted waffle cone that never ran out of strawberry ice cream. But as that ghostly parchment came to mind, and I thought back on the big picture my runeeye had been slowly revealing to me since my conversation with Captain Smee.
Rolling the dice, I stared at the queen’s now-patient eyes and said, “What I want is for you to make Bon-Hwa queen all the time, not just when you’re incapacitated or away.”
Vyzella audibly gasped, as did Barsilla who just flew into the room. Kit started laughing, and the cat’s chuckle filled the bedroom.
But Varella merely narrowed her eyes.
“I offer you a rare queen’s boon, and you want to use it for someone else? You understand this favor could be used to make you big again, right?”
I looked over at Barsilla with a growing smile and said, “No thanks. It’d be really hard to kiss my girlfriend if I was big again. I chose a life here with Barsilla, the life of a piskie.”
For the first time, I watched the librarian fae tear up and drop her clipboard and pencil. She covered her mouth with her hands and stifled a sob.
Varella raised an eyebrow.
“Even still. Why use your boon to benefit the second-most powerful fae in my court?”
Turning to the Raven Queen, I shrugged.
“I wasn’t aware using a boon required an explanation,” I said. “My reasons are my own, your grace.”
Slowly nodding, Varella turned back to her left-hand lady.
“Barsilla, take a note when you’re able. I want you to deliver an official decree to Bon-Hwa. She will no longer be known as queen-in-command. Henceforth, she’ll simply operate with the title of queen. She will continue to oversee the day-to-day queen’s business, and her authority will have no limits inside the Raven Court unless it directly conflicts with a decree from myself.”
She turned to me again.
“Consider your boon spent. I hope it was worth it, apprentice arcanist.”
I slightly bowed my head.
At that point, Varella looked around the room and realized someone important was missing. She frowned.
“Where is my pet?”
I flinched, images of Sierra being shot and falling through a window suddenly coming back to my mind.
“Oh shit,” I gasped.
“Anola?” Varella asked, looking closer at me.
“Last I saw her, your grace, Sierra was shot with a mortal gun and a silver ball. Smee shot her, and then she fell backward through a window. I haven’t seen her since,” I said.
Rage filled the Raven Queen’s face, and I felt the wind start to pick up outside as the cabin shook.
“Barsilla, we’re returning to Featherstone at once. I want feathers and talons dispatched to search all of Perth. Nobody rests until my pet is found and returned to me.”
A new voice at the door caused us all to turn. We found Bon-Hwa leaning against the doorframe with a scowl on her face.
“I’ve just heard back from Ceras, my queen. There’s no sign of Sierra anywhere. We found a puddle of blood in the middle of some broken glass, but the werewolf hasn’t yet turned up.”
The Raven Queen clenched her fists and ground her teeth.
“Where is Lily? I demand to speak with my wing at once.”
I landed on the bed and stood next to Barsilla, hoping to stay out of the queen’s line of sight. She was practically seething, and my heart was hammering watching her returning glamour storm and rage.
“The spymaster was last seen boarding a boat in the harbor and heading toward the Scoundrel anchored out a way. I think we can conclude she’s already on Sierra’s trail and will find her.”
Varella took a step toward the door and said, “I’m going after them.”
But Vyzella caught her hand.
“Var, listen to me. I know you’ve gotten some strength back for the first time in weeks, and you feel like a wrathful storm once more. But consider your subjects. If they see you reappear for the first time since news of Kilgara arrived, and you’re immediately flying off, it’ll send ripples of doubt and fear through your queendom.”
I watched the Raven Queen stifle a snarl.
“What would you have me do while my pet is wounded and away?”
Bon-Hwa spoke directly enough that I flinched.
“Trust that your spymaster will find and retrieve her. Return to the palace, clean up, and sit the throne for court tomorrow. Reinstate the confidence of your nobles who will then reinstate the confidence of your citizens. News from Faerie is grim right now. Courts are failing with many dissolving into civil wars and rebellions, exactly as the Fist of Kairn wanted. You want to make sure that doesn’t happen here? Announce to everyone you’re alive and ready to defend the Raven Court.”
Taking several deep breaths, I watched the Raven Queen wipe her forehead. She gritted her teeth more but eventually released her fists.
The queen had at last regained her strength, only to now lose her heart. And I watched her warring between telling Bon-Hwa to fuck off while she raced after her pet and understanding her responsibilities as queen.
Varella looked to the floor, and I only heard her mutter a single word.
“. . . Sierra.”
Epilogue
(Sierra)
Everything on my left side hurt, my arms as well. Burning like I hadn’t felt since I grabbed Kit’s wine bowl and scorched the shit out of my fingers. Outside wherever I saw, I heard a deep rumble of thunder. And the floor swayed left and then right.
Of course, I couldn’t move much for some reason.
Whimpering and managing to open a single eye, I detected a single dim torch swaying from the ceiling. The smell of moldy bread and squishy potatoes filled the air around me as I fought not to hurl.
“I think she’s waking up. Go get the captain,” a man said.
I must have passed out for another few minutes before waking up again, realizing that the burning sensation on my arms wasn’t going away. I tried to move and found myself secured in place against a large wooden beam of some kind.
A thin smoke made the room extra hazy. The smoke came from my smoldering flesh, courtesy of silver chains wrapped tight around me.
“Fuck,” I coughed, a bit of blood and drool dripping down my chin.
I’d have scars just above my elbows for the rest of my life. My collar, where I’d been shot, remained open and quite tender. How had it not healed?
Right. . . silver ball in the pistol, I thought. Fucking pirates.
A man’s voice spoke and drew my attention toward him.
“There she is. I was worried you weren’t going to wake up. After two days of sailing, I figured you’d ask for water or food. But you’ve just been down here festering exactly where I left you,” Smee said. “You’re my consolation prize from the Raven Court. And I can only imagine what that bitch queen will offer to get you back. I’m sure the Crocodile King will get something nice.”
Rage coursed through me, and I struggled against the chains.
“You will address her as the Raven Queen,” I growled, eyes snapping open. I ignored the burning in my arms as the three or four pirates in the room laughed at me.
“Calm down. You’re not going anywhere. Those chains are solid silver. We know how to deal with werewolves,” one of the pirates said.
Smee grinned.
“Truly not a bad consolation prize,” he mumbled.
I grimaced and took in a shallow breath. Anger brought me back to the waking world, and I was ready to kill. I’d been shot, hogtied, and had to listen to these shitheads insult my queen. Enough was enough.
A thought occurred to me as I pulled against the chains again. And I started to laugh, manically. The pirates laughed with me. And Smee, the only one who appeared to have any sense, asked, “What’s so funny?”
“Well, you’ve bound me with silver chains, right?”
“Correct. That sizzling of your flesh should make that pretty obvious. I guess there’s no intelligence requirement to be a royal pet,” he said, putting his hands on his hips.
“But no iron chains?”
He narrowed his eyes and slowly shook his head.
“And how many men do you have on this ship?”
“Nine,” he answered, scowling. “Why? Are you thinking about trying to attack us?”
I shook my head.
“Good. Because I’ve got enough to deal with right now. Fucking giant storm outside for starters. The waters leaving the lake you call home and entering the faesea can get pretty choppy sometimes.”
I laughed again.
“Relax, captain. I’m not thinking about trying to attack you. I already made up my mind to slaughter you all. I just needed to know how much help to call.”
And as Smee flinched, I pulled deep on the chunk of queensglamour embedded in my wolfheart as I had while defending Featherstone. Primal rage quaked through me as I threw back my head and let forth an ear-piercing howl in the storage room I’d been imprisoned within.
From the shadows of the room created by the swaying lantern, violet-eyed beasts took form. Rustling dark feathers betrayed their location as a dozen wolves growled in unison.
“What in the name of hell are those?!” one of the pirates shrieked.
“I call them my Black Feather Pack. Kill them all!” I barked as the wolves made of nothing but shadow and obsidian feathers rushed from all corners of the room and tore the pirates into pieces. Smee screamed until one crushed his throat, and I gave a feral cackle watching him bleed to death on the floor.
Over the next few minutes, my wolves freed me, and we worked our way through the ship, killing every person in sight.
The ship swayed violently to the left as another large clap of thunder rocked the boat.
“Fuck, that’s loud,” I muttered, finding my way to the deck.
Rain pelted my face, and the wind whipped my tattered clothing that had gone crusty with my blood over the course of two days.
In the distance, I spotted a massive wave rising in front of the ship. It swallowed my vision as my heart sank, and I looked around for any sign of land. Finding none and hearing the deafening roar of the approaching wave, I thought of a George Clooney film, but the title eluded me.
Looking desperately for the helm, I ran toward the tiller, only to find a single bloody hand remaining attached to the chipped, worn wheel.
“In hindsight, I really should have spared at least one of the pirates to steer the ship,” I muttered.
My black feather pack sat around me, waiting for another command.
“I don’t suppose one of you knows how to steer a ship or navigate, do you?” I asked as the wolves cocked their heads to the side and whinged.
I slowly nodded as that giant wave came crashing down upon the ship.
“Well, fuck.”

2024.04.11 06:14 monachopsis-2000 Ideas for Easy Meals?!

Hello. New here and have been on a deficit for maybe 3-4 weeks now. I am running out of things to eat. I am fine with eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch (dinner varies bc my partner and son) but I haven’t found my go to meals yet.
For breakfast I’ve been rotating Greek yogurt, eggs, maybe some bacon, oatmeal with chia & hemp hearts. I am trying to avoid oats until I get my cravings under control. I believe I have some possible thyroid issues. I’ve never been diagnosed but I have had ovarian cysts as well as other PCOS symptoms and symptoms which indicate insulin resistance so starting with carbs isn’t good for me. I was raised on a midwestern diet in a house with lots of processed junk. So this has been an adjustment for me in many ways as someone who’s never eaten “whole foods” and tends to binge eat.
I’m trying to front load my day with protein and I know breakfast doesn’t need to be so heavy but I pump for my son so after my morning pump of 10oz of breast milk, I am RAVENOUS. Thats roughly 200 calories so I am immediately starving and super thirsty in the morning.
Lunch is the main issue. I recently discovered I like tuna but then I also discovered mercury poisoning. Very disappointing. I was shook by the amount of protein and I love mayo so this was perfect for me but that’s a no go other than once a week. I have been doing chicken wraps as well with romaine, cottage cheese ranch, colby, and Tyson chicken strips (not the best but I’m a busy mom and I can’t stand packaged grilled chicken) only issue is the damn tortilla is a bit of wasted calories. So I’d really appreciate some lunch ideas. I do stay home with my son but I’d prefer not to cook an extravagant lunch for myself.
Dinner is simple we do chicken, shrimp, fish, a veggie, and then rice or sweet/reg potatoes.
I have a sweet tooth so I like yasso bars and Clio mini bars to curb that and give myself a treat. Any other sweet low cal snacks are appreciated.

2024.04.06 23:18 Skiguy4484 Unofficial Snow Report - Ice Ice Baby - Saturday, April 6

For those new here, hi I'm Taylor, a local who lives up in the resort and skis most days. I'm also the moderator for this Reddit community. Me and a few familiar usernames in this Reddit community post unofficial non-resort affiliated, as we ski it snow conditions. Hopefully these reports help you figure out if you should prioritize a trip up here, or wait out the next storm!
Remember, this is unofficial advise. Ski at your own risk. Not affiliated with Big Sky Resort.
LOW SNOW CONDITIONS EXIST, PRE RIDE BEFORE TEARING IT UP
DON'T DUCK ROPES, RESPECT CLOSURES! If it's untracked at Big Sky, there is probably a reason (rocks)!
This year's snowpack is very unstable, checkout Avalanche Conditions
Ski to conditions. Feel free to comment your experience or thoughts!
Helpful Links (official from the resort)
Summary
Current status: 184 runs (-108). 3037 acres (-2267), 30/36 (-4, Dakota, Headwaters, Tram, Shedhorn, Challenger closed for conditions).
Wow how a week changes things. We enjoyed spring skiing most of this week. Yesterday we toped out slightly over 50 degrees and last night we had a hard freeze. Today it's nothing but ice. The good news is the groom last night was pretty clean so anything groomed is pretty even ahead of tonight's snow.
Even by 3 today nothing had softened up at all. However if you had sharp edges you could grab an edge. I didn't see too many folks sliding around, but a lot of scraping.
Runs Saturday April 6
Monday April 1
Conditions report
Southern Comfort area is fully closed due to thin cover. Here's the bottom of Southern comfort Thursday, which certainly thinned out more yesterday.
Bottom of Southern Comfort lift Thursday, April 4th
Southen Comfort area is Real estate access only. Hope Chad's mom had a good time on the groomers.
Headwaters was skiing chalky yesterday but all upper terrain was closed today due to icy conditions. Shedhorn/Dakota area has been closed most of the week due to conditions, largely risk of wet slides which you could see some small slides above Shedhorn grill. If you took liberty bowl this week it was the full trek out down SKITTLES ROAD as Shedhorn hasn't turned since around Wednesday.
BIG HORN, CRAZY RAVEN, SNAKE PIT, AND BEAR'S LAIR were all closed.
Today, April 6, BIG HORN as seen from Thunder Wolf
You want to be extremely careful on ELK PARK MEADOW and MADISON AVENUE if you take them. There are a LOT of grassy/rocky spots
Photo Today, April 6
The bottom of ELK PARK RIDGE is ROUGH. There is a GIGANTIC crack probably a foot deep with standing water. Not sure what caused it but I've never seen anything like it. So watch your speed at the bottom of ELK PARK RIDGE
Major crack in the base at the bottom of Thunderwolf

I'm a bit surprised how well everything else is holding up. Coverage is still fine on Ramcharger area except for the entry into RAMCHARGER LIFT LINE and the very bottom of AFRICA

Bottom of AFRICA bumps looking up from Pacifier
Most of Six Shooter terrain is holding up fine. A few issues at the main drop on PARK AVENUE. SILVER FOX GULLY is getting thin but still covered.
Drop on PARK AVENUE
The only other issue is out on HORSESHOE at the first cutover. You must take the first HORSESHOE CUTOVER which is a little more windy than I remembered. That face has some grassy spots which I couldn't get photos of.
FORECAST
A storm is currently blowing in but I'm a bit skeptical of these totals. I think we'll be lucky if we pull out 6" for this system over the weekend.

We'll be around freezing most of the week but will warm back up towards next weekend. Still a ways out so things could change.

2024.04.05 04:01 MechanicfromTC2 Flanker Weapon Guide

This is opinion based on how I feel they belong. I will be rating them with 3 scores, Offense, Defense, and Support. This is to help anyone who needs guidance on what Loadout they should use depending on how they play, no let us begin!
Lever Shotgun/Mule Mauler 600 O: 4/5 D: 3/5 S: 2/5 Best used Offense as it does great damage, perfect for people who like to rush in.
Baby Face’s Blaster O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 3/5 Great for players who like to pick off damage and be fast as it is great doing that but you have to be risky otherwise you’ll be slowed
Lupara DB/Mach-Coach O: 4/5 D: 2/5 S: 3/5 Best used on maps with hazards or high ground so you can either knock enemies back of flee upward
Soda Popper O: 4/5 D: 3/5 S: 3/5 Using this weapon allows for a reward if you can hit shots as 3 extra jumps can help you maneuver any shots
Perceptionist O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 4/5 Used by players who like to get behind the enemy and pick off enemies
Shortstop: O: 4/5 D: 3/5 S: 4/5 Essentially a sniper for Flanker as the extra range allows to play from farther away and still do decent damage
Shotgun Cannon: O: 4/5 D: 3/5 S: 2/5 Best used if you know how to coordinate consistent shot after shot during a fast unload which could deal massive damage
Specialist: O: 3/5 D: 1/5 S: 4/5 Still does decent damage and you can cap faster which is useful for A/D or PL
Pistol/Raven O: 3/5 D: 3/5 S: 2/5 Best used as a finisher tool
Concealed Carry O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 3/5 Useful if you can finish off enemies if you don’t have a Doctor on your team
Conventional O: 3/5 D: 3/5 S: 2/5 Best used as a finisher tool
Winger O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 3/5 If you know the trick in which you jump higher if you hold out your melee, this is really helpful
Six Point Shuriken O: 4/5 D: 1/5 S: 2/5 Really good combo tool if shots are lined up
Bloxy Cola/Bloxaide O: 1/5 D: 1/5 S: 3/5 Useful for getting behind enemies without taking damage
Witches Brew: O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 1/5 This is useful for yourself and you have to be very good at dodging to put this to good use
Mad Milk/Hot Cocoa Blast O: 3/5 D: 3/5 S: 5/5 The ultimate support tool for your team if you are lacking a Arsonist/Mechanic/Doctor
Super Sneakers O: 4/5 D: 3/5 S: 2/5 Great for jumping greater heights
Bat/Fish O: 2/5 D: 2/5 S: 2/5 Not recommended but is still useful as a finisher tool for anyone close
Atomizer O: 2/5 D: 3/5 S: 2/5 Helpful for finding camping spots to wait for your target
Brooklyn BasheThree-Rune Blade O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 3/5 Good for up close fights
Candy Cane: O: 4/5 D: 3/5 S: 3/5 Great for try hard Flankers as the consistent health packs will keep you alive
Cold Shoulder O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 4/5 Great at blocking Marksmen from sniping
Grill Scout: O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 4/5 Help your team by removing their debuffs
Sandman/Rally Racket O: 3/5 D: 2/5 S: 4/5 Great for slowing down targets
Wooden Sword/Handyman O: 3/5 D: 3/5 S: 4/5 Great combo tool and market for your team
Wrap Assassin O: 4/5 D: 3/5 S: 3/5 Good combo tool but best used for yourself
What are your thoughts?
