2024.05.14 01:05 No-Opposite-4662 Emporia, KS 1974 F-4 Tornado

Emporia, KS 1974 F-4 Tornado
I have always been incredibly intrigued by the 1974 F-4 tornado that had struck my hometown of Emporia, KS. My mom was only about a year when the event took place, with the tornado ripping through the Flinthills Mall, only .5 miles from their home. Their front window blew out and debris was thrown around, but other than that they had been fine.
My interest on the tornado would peak when we moved into a house just .2 miles away from her childhood home while I was in high school. My issue has always been the same— where at the photos of the tornado itself? I’ve only ever been able to find the aftermath photos of the damage it caused. I was lucky enough to find this included photo a couple weeks ago, which is the F-4 as it very first touched down in the Lyon county area. It’s frightening to think that it would eventually grow into a monster that took the lives of 6 people and did $25m dollars in damage ($166mil in 2024 money).
With this event happening months after the 1974 super outbreak, I figured photos of the tornado itself would have been easier to find. I’ve dug everywhere possible but it seems to simply not exist on the internet, as it’s always been over shadowed by the super outbreak or the 1966 Topeka, KS tornado that happened exactly 10 years prior.
My hometown was also hit by an F-2 in 1990, to which my mom was also around for. I’ve seen a lot of video footage and photos of that event, which happened to take a very similar path to the 1974 tornado.
In 2011, an EF-3 would go on to form but not drop until it was right outside of Emporia. That was my first “close” call, as it just barely missed us. It moved on to Reading, KS and created major damage that resulted in one death and two injuries.
The 1974 storm is just not a well known one for reasons stated above. I know there is a lot of “forgotten” tornado stories, and I just wanted to share the one that just fascinated me the most!

From Greece with Love (and Wild West Facts): Dodge City in the Spotlight!
Howdy stranger(s). 🤠 𓃓 🌵
I am not from the US; I'm from Greece (🤮 😒 🤬 👎) but I love the US, particularly the Wild West era. So don't hate me, although you can hate Greeks as much as you want. \m/
Well now, reckon I've rustled up some mighty fine bits of knowledge 'bout Dodge City, KS, that might tickle yer fancy if ya ain't heard 'em yet. (Translation: Below are some nice pieces of information I gathered about Dodge City, KS, that you might find interesting if you don't already know them.)
Dodge City, KS, played a pivotal role in the Wild West era, particularly in the latter half of the 19th century • Founded in 1872 alongside the newly laid tracks of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. It was initially a major shipping center for buffalo hides • Was a major stop along the Chisholm Trail, one of the major cattle drive routes from Texas to Kansas railheads Earned the moniker "Cowboy Capital" due to its role as a major stop along the cattle-driving trails, particularly the famous Chisholm Trail. At the peak of the cattle drives in 1883-1885, herds totaling 10M head passed through. • The town gained a reputation as a rowdy and lawless frontier town and was home to many celebrated gunfighters of the West, including Wyatt Earp, the Masterson brothers, Doc Holliday, etc. Often referred to as the "Wickedest City in the West" due to its reputation for violence, gambling and prostitution. • And a bonus one, as you've heard the phrase "Get out of Dodge" (which was used in American popular culture until the 2000s, but I'm unsure about its usage today), it refers to a dangerous or threatening situation, anchoring the idea that early Dodge City was a theater of interpersonal violence and civic disorder
ps. Long live 🇺🇸 🗽

2024.05.07 17:59 VISIT0R1 T-Mobile acquiring SoniqWave's 2.5 GHz spectrum

Unfortunately, not all parts of this deal show up in the FCC's Universal Licensing System (ULS) yet, including the lead application which should include all the details. I will follow up with a more detailed post once that occurs.
What is publicly available so far are two applications to transfer all 42 of the EBS and BRS licenses owned by speculator SoniqWave to T-Mobile (see links below.)
https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/ApplicationSearch/applLicenses.jsp?applID=14680273&valCsNumOfRows=0&csPageNum=1
https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/ApplicationSearch/applLicenses.jsp?applID=14679998
Under the 'Admin' tab of either application is a link to a PDF labelled "Reference to Lead Application", which gives us additional information. It says the parties "are assigning certain 3.45 GHz, ... EBS and ... BRS licenses and leases to each other." SoniqWave leases 16 EBS licenses, so hopefully this means that T-Mobile will also be taking over all of those leases.
SoniqWave currently owns no 3.45 GHz, so obviously T-Mobile is trading some of theirs to SoniqWave. T-Mobile holds 3.45 GHz licenses under both 'T-Mobile License LLC' and 'Nextel West Corp.' and both entities are listed as parties to this transaction.
All of T-Mobile's 3.45 GHz is worth far more than SoniqWave's 2.5 GHz, so only a subset will be included, possibly from some of the areas where they will be acquiring 2.5 GHz (presumably to reduce by how much they would exceed the FCC's spectrum screen, thus potentially speeding up transaction approval.)
Edit: SoniqWave 2.5 GHz licenses

2024.05.06 02:58 danhalenmhk Can anyone help me improve my chances of photographing a supercell in KS tomorrow 5/6/24?

I’m located in Manhattan so I would prefer to remain close by if possible. I have I have a 14mm prime lens, a 24-70mm, and a 100-400mm, so distance from the storm itself isn’t a huge issue.
My dream is to get a Timelapse of a supercell forming and keep it going until it weakens or I have to take cover. BUT I’m meteorology dumb and don’t know what I should be looking for on radar apps. I have RadarScope and MyRadar, so any tips of what to look for would be helpful and much appreciated.
I’ll of course share my results here if I’m lucky enough to get the shot!

2024.05.04 22:59 Glad-Distance-4022 Looking for new job

Currently in Topeka, KS and just got a raise to 69k. I am finishing my masters and trying to figure out what I should do for progression I currently work in public sector so no room for raises or promotions really as all is determined by the government. I currently do hybrid and I trying to think of what I should do next. I don’t necessarily want to move to Kansas City as hcol compared to Topeka as I have a home here. Should I try and find straight remote work or try and find somewhere that offers hybrid here. Only problem not many good places to look for here for more money wise. Currently have 2 years experience working with budgets and minimal work in SQL and just don’t know what I should do next. All advice is welcomed!

2024.04.30 17:08 S_Cam_per Do I really need foam board insulation?

1968 ranch house in Topeka, KS that I bought from my grandparents. I have a semi finished basement that I am reworking some walls in. It is a walkout basement with one long back side of the house almost completely above ground, another short side and long front side about 6 feet under soil, and the other short side underground but with a full depth garage on that side. It is completely cooled and heated, has no need for a sump, the humidity stays within the same range as the upstairs and the temperature stays about 5-10 degrees cooler than upstairs depending on season. I pulled down the 1970 drywall on the long side that's 6 feet under and to my surprise found that the drywall was fixed to 1 inch furring strips that were glued to the wall. Not a single sign of mold or moisture on either drywall or furring strips. I assumed I would see some type of moisture but everything is dry and seems to have been always. It's totally possible my grandfather had some type of exterior waterproofing done when he built. I assumed I would need to put up foam board but I'm thinking that maybe I can get away with framing an inch from the block for air exchange space and put Rockwood in between studs with drywall on top. Thoughts?
