2024.05.15 00:09 JojoDindebut What instructions have Zen Masters provided on the practice of meditation?

I borrowed this from user u/jahmonkey who posted it on zen forum. Copied it here in case it gets deleted, cause I have no time to read it now, but for later.
Here are some Chinese Zen masters who shared their advice on the practice of meditation in their own words:
Quote: "When you sit in meditation, sit as if you were mountain peaks, your mind vast and unshakable. Calmly and without effort, let thoughts and emotions arise and dissolve like clouds in the sky. Let your mind be clear and open, like a mirror reflecting everything yet holding on to nothing." Zen Master Hongzhi Zhengjue, from "Cultivating the Empty Field" (Wu-men Kuan)
Quote: "In the practice of meditation, do not strive to become anything. Just sit with a relaxed and upright posture, allowing your breath to come and go naturally. Observe the arising and passing away of thoughts, sensations, and emotions without grasping or rejecting them. Rest in the boundless awareness that is beyond all conceptualizations." Zen Master Huangbo Xiyun, from "The Zen Teaching of Huangbo" (Huangbo Xiyun Chanshi Yulu)
Quote: "When you sit in meditation, do not expect anything. Do not seek enlightenment or try to attain some special state of mind. Just be present with whatever arises, whether it is pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. Allow your thoughts to come and go like waves in the ocean, without getting caught up in them. Be aware of the breath, the sensations in the body, and the spaciousness of awareness itself." Zen Master Mazu Daoyi, from "The Recorded Sayings of Zen Master Mazu" (Mazu Daoyi Chanshi Yulu)
Quote: "In the practice of meditation, do not cling to any particular method or technique. Let go of all striving and effort, and simply be present with your experience in each moment. Whether you are sitting, walking, eating, or working, bring mindfulness and awareness to whatever you are doing. This is the true practice of meditation." Zen Master Bankei Yōtaku, from "Bankei Zen: Translations from the Record of Bankei" (Bankei Zen: Bankei's Record of Talks)
Quote: "The essence of meditation is not to seek anything outside of yourself. It is to realize your true nature, which is already complete and perfect. Sit quietly, breathe naturally, and allow your mind to settle. Let go of all thoughts and concepts, and rest in the pure awareness that is always present. This is the true meditation." Zen Master Foyan Qingyuan, from "The Instant Zen: Waking Up in the Present" (Foyan Qingyuan Chanshi Yulu)
Quote: "In meditation, do not try to control or manipulate your thoughts. Instead, just let them arise and pass away naturally, like clouds moving across the sky. Be aware of the present moment, without judgment or attachment. This is the essence of meditation." Zen Master Yunmen Wenyan, from "Zen Essence: The Science of Freedom" (Yunmen Wenyan Chanshi Yulu)
Quote: "When you sit in meditation, do not grasp onto any particular object of focus. Simply be present with whatever arises in your experience, whether it is thoughts, sensations, or emotions. Cultivate a spacious and open awareness, like the vast sky that contains everything." Zen Master Xuedou Zhijian, from "The Blue Cliff Record" (Xuedou Zhijian Chanshi Yulu)
Quote: "Meditation is not about attaining a special state of mind or achieving some goal. It is about being fully present in each moment, without judgment or expectation. Just sit, breathe, and let go. Allow everything to be as it is, and you will discover the boundless peace and clarity that are already within you." Zen Master Dahui Zonggao, from "Swampland Flowers: The Letters and Lectures of Zen Master Dahui" (Dahui Zonggao Chanshi Yulu)
Quote: "In meditation, do not try to suppress or eliminate thoughts. Instead, let them come and go freely, like waves in the ocean. Observe them without getting entangled or carried away. Rest in the stillness and silence that underlies all mental activity." Zen Master Linji Yixuan, from "The Record of Linji" (Linji Yixuan Chanshi Yulu)
Quote: "When you sit in meditation, do not cling to any particular state of mind. Do not try to make anything happen or force any experience. Simply be present with whatever arises, whether it is pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. Rest in the spaciousness of awareness, and let everything be as it is." Zen Master Guishan Lingyou, from "Zen Dawn: Early Zen Texts from Tun Huang" (Guishan Lingyou Chanshi Yulu)
There may be reasonable alternate translations of the word “meditation” but the question would be what would that word be? It is clear from the context that these Zen masters are referring to a practice that is properly called meditation. To assert otherwise is simply being obtuse.

First / Previous / Royal Road / Patreon (Read 12 Chapters Ahead)

When dawn broke, the two of them set off again, once more heading north. Pale had made sure to call down another pod once the sun had risen, this one full of winter gear for the two of them – thermal jackets to keep them warm, but more importantly, snow-print camouflage covers for them to throw over themselves if they needed to creep around at night.
"What's the point of this stuff?" Kayla asked as she threw one of the snow-colored smocks over herself, pausing only to tug at it in a few places.
"Makes it harder for them to spot us," Pale explained. "Of course, some degree of combat is inevitable, but that's no reason to not avoid it if we can do so."
Pale zipped up her winter jacket, then reached for her shotgun, topping it off with fresh shells of buckshot. Kayla watched with fascination as Pale slid red-colored shell after red-colored shell into her weapon's magazine tube, finally furrowing her brow in confusion.
"How does it work?"
"Hm?" Pale asked, looking over to her. "You mean my weapons?"
"Yes. I thought you said your people couldn't use magic?"
"We can't. This is pure science." She held up a shotgun shell for emphasis. "To put it simply, my weapon works by setting off a chain reaction of burning chemicals and small explosions, which forces metal projectiles down a carefully-shaped and machined piece of metal at a very high rate of speed."
"But… it's so small. Why does it do so much damage?"
"Because of something called physics. Kinetic energy is determined by a combination of mass and velocity, but between the two, velocity has a much more profound impact on the energy itself. Essentially, you want to make a projectile more powerful? Make it go faster rather than just make it heavier."
Kayla hesitated. "My head's already starting to spin…"
"I will spare you any further explanation, then." Pale slung her weapon across her front, then did a quick gear check to make sure everything was stowed where it needed to be. Once that was done, she nodded over to Kayla. "Lead the way."
The two of them took off at a brisk march through the plains. Snow had started to fall as they had woken up, covering the area in a thin sheet of white that crunched underfoot with every step taken. Neither girl felt the effects of the elements thanks to their new winter gear, but it did make traversing through the plains a bit more difficult, not to mention that as the snow continued to fall, their movement would only be more impeded with time.
And just as well, there was the matter of the tracks they were leaving behind as they walked. Pale wasn't quite sure how to deal with those, at least not yet, but they would cross that particular bridge when they came to it.
As they walked, Pale noticed Kayla had become oddly silent. She blinked, then turned towards her, only to find her staring off into space as they advanced, watching the snow fall down on the terrain below. Pale cleared her throat, and Kayla jumped a bit before turning to face her.
"Yes?"
"Are you feeling okay?" Pale bluntly asked.
"Why do you ask?"
"Because you look awful. Is it the nightmares again?"
Kayla bit her lip, but ultimately nodded. "...Yeah, it is."
Pale's brow furrowed. Unfortunately for both of them, she was no psychologist. It was clear Kayla was going through some sort of trauma regarding the events of the past few days, and while Pale had archives of books related to the subject stored in her data banks, even she knew better than to go poking around in someone's head.
The human brain may have been mapped, but there were still things about it that even her creators didn't quite understand, and the nature of mental illness was one of them. She had already tried to logic Kayla out of whatever mental hole she'd fallen into, and that clearly hadn't worked. No, there was something deeper going on with her, something that Pale didn't understand.
Part of her wished Evie was still here, if only because she seemed to get it a lot better than Pale could.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Pale offered.
"Do you think that will help?"
"Has to be better than letting it fester like this. But if you're not willing, I won't push the issue."
Kayla shook her head. "It's just… I don't know how people do it. I still feel like I'm gonna vomit whenever I see a dead body lying on the ground. How you and Evie are able to not only keep going after that but add more to the pile is… frightening."
"Death is inherently frightening for everyone, even me."
"Truly?" Kayla asked, surprised. "You're afraid of death?"
"Yes, in multiple different ways." Pale gestured to herself. "This body, for one – I worry about losing it, because if that happens, I am going to be stuck floating listlessly through space, stuck in Sjel's orbit until my systems finally burn themselves out after several million years. Then my consciousness will fade away into nothingness, and there will be no remnant of me left behind aside from a shattered husk of a warship. Then again, perhaps that is the fate of every warship – the oceans back on my creators' home planet are, after all, filled with the dessicated husks of once-proud ships of war, many still sealed up like time capsules. I must admit, it would be poetic if I were to join them."
"No, it wouldn't," Kayla countered. "It'd be sad, Pale. You'd just float endlessly through space for the rest of time."
"Not quite. After a few billion years, this solar system's sun would burn out and turn into a supernova, wiping any trace of it from the face of the galaxy. But I understand what you're saying. My point, however, is that death is profound for everyone, even me."
"Why wouldn't it be profound for you?"
"Because I am not alive."
"Yes, you are."
Pale's brow furrowed. "I am not an organic person."
Wordlessly, Kayla reached out and poked her in the shoulder. "Weird, because you certainly feel organic."
"Not what I meant. I was created in a laboratory."
"So? Do you have any idea how many people were created from a drunken romp between an adventurer and a tavern wench? Is being made in a laboratory, whatever that means, really any more inauthentic than a loveless one-night stand that happened to lead to a baby?"
Pale opened her mouth, but Kayla beat her to the punch. "I don't understand why you keep trying to make this point. You are a person, Pale, and-"
"I cannot be a person," Pale growled. "That was not the purpose I was created for. And besides, this conversation isn't about me, it's about you. Stop trying to change the subject."
Kayla grunted, then crossed her arms as she walked. "Fine. You want to talk about what's bothering me? Now you know. I hate the knowledge that what I'm doing is leading to people being hurt and killed. I hate that Evie decided to help us, and made herself and her caravan a target as a result. And most importantly, I hate that it's all so necessary, because if we don't do this, I'll never see my father again. There, happy now?" Kayla crossed her arms, then let out a tired sigh. "I want to go home, but I can't even do that – not only is my father still missing, but my home is gone. I have nothing to go back to. Any friends I had are dead now..."
Kayla let out a small sniffle, and Pale hesitated before reaching out and resting a hand on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't mean to make you feel like this. I understand that you're going through a lot, I just wish there was more I could do to help."
"You're here," Kayla insisted. "And you're helping me get my father back. That's more than enough. The rest… I'll deal with that on my own for now, I guess."
"Very well. But if you need someone to vent to, I'm here."
Kayla sniffled again, but gave her a thin, grateful smile. "Thank you."
Pale let her hand fall off Kayla's shoulder, and Kayla took a breath to calm herself before they continued on.

They walked for several more hours, the snow intensifying all around them before it finally came to be too much. By this time, the plains had given way to hills and rocky mountains capped with snow. Pale paused to examine their surroundings as they climbed a hill, looking for shelter.
"We must be getting farther north," she surmised. "The weather is becoming unrecognizable from how it was back in your village."
"You're right about that," Kayla grunted as she scrambled over some rocks. "Shouldn't be much longer now until we get to the sea. How we're going to cross without a boat, though… I suppose we'll have to figure that out on our own."
Pale nodded. "I am surprised that we haven't run into any opposition yet."
"I've had us staying away from the nearby towns on purpose. I figured that if we were going to run into anyone hostile, it'd be there."
"Smart move," Pale complimented. "And I take it that keeping us out in the open fields for as long as possible was part of that, too? Good thinking."
"Thanks," Kayla replied. She looked around the mountain, her gaze finally landing on an outcropping of rocks. "I think I see a cave over there. Think it'd make for good shelter for a night?"
"It'd be better than staying out in the open. Come on, I'll lead the way this time."

A short while later, both girls were sprawled out inside the cave, their outer layers of clothing hung up on some nearby rocks to air dry. Their thermal under layers kept them warm, as did a small fire Kayla had managed to start using her magic. They both sat huddled around the fire, a set of military rations perched in their laps.
"It'll be hot, so be careful when you open it," Pale warned. "The flameless ration heater included in each may use water to function, but trust me, the food will come out hot despite that."
"What'd you say this one was, again?" Kayla asked, examining the bag.
"Chicken and rice bowl. It should be a lot better than the earlier emergency ration bar I gave you – less artificial, at least – and unlike that one, you can eat this one in one sitting without any ill effects."
Kayla perked up a bit at that. "That sounds nice…"
They both fell silent after that, the only noise filling the cave being the crackling of the fire. Finally, Kayla broke the silence.
"
I just want you to know… I'm glad you're here with me," she said softly. "And not just because you're helping me find my father, either. You're a good person, Pale."
"I am-"
"I know, I know – you don't agree with being called a person. But you are."
Pale's brow furrowed. "No offense, but perhaps this is a difference of culture. How does one define a person on this world?"
"A person is anyone who has a sjel," Kayla answered.
"Then I do not fit the definition."
"Everyone has a sjel, Pale," Kayla softly emphasized. "Even you. Even if you can't use magic, I know you've still got one. And I'll do whatever it takes to make you realize that."
Again, silence fell over the two of them. It didn't last, however – from outside, Pale heard the unmistakable sound of far-away voices, and sat up straight. Judging from how Kayla's wolf ears perked up, she'd heard them, too.
"Look alive," Pale said, putting her ration aside and reaching for her shotgun.
"I think we're about to have company."

Special thanks to my good friend and co-writer, Ickbard for the help with writing this story.

2024.05.14 23:53 Ready_Welder2877 There’s a War Outside the Material Plane. Humanity is in Grave Danger and the Time is Near. [Part 1]

As much as I don’t want to share this sort of information, mainly for personal reasons, and perhaps for my own safety, I think it’s best everyone deserves to know what’s coming.
“They” said it would happen in 2030, or perhaps much sooner or later than that.
I’m talking about the great merger.
No, it’s not a merging of all nations into a globalized civilization. It’s much worse than that. I’m talking about the merging of the material plane with the spiritual planes. The astral, mental, and ethereal plane for example, will become directly interactive with our physical plane. This would seem like ‘good’ news or even exciting news to some people, particularly new-agers and others wishing to see their deceased loved ones, or even those who wish for the coming of Cthulhu. It may surprise you of me to say that Cthulhu does exist, just not in the way you’d think. Let’s just say he's a thought-form created by the mind of Lovecraft and those who are fans of his work.
However, I’m about to tell you that this is something we shouldn’t be happy about. While many of you will be seeing deceased loved ones with the naked eye, and even seeing angels, there are things which exist in these non-corporeal planes which many of you don’t have the courage nor capacity to deal with. I sure as hell didn’t have much capacity for the job, given that I couldn’t comprehend some of the things which existed from the minds of the most fucked up humans.
The worlds and other horrors beyond all human comprehension exist there and given the fact our world is filled with much turmoil, war, hatred, and destruction, it no longer surprises me that the astral and ethereal planes surrounding earth are filled with so much ‘negative’ energies, thoughts, and emotions.
Before I continue, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dean Zenk. It’s an alias I like to use from time to time. I was a former soldier for a paranormal military operation which is top-secret. I’m well aware that our own military wouldn’t associate themselves with what may be considered ‘subjective’ belief, given that there’s no objective proof. However, even I’m aware that absence of proof is not proof of absence. Even God does exist, but he’s not this sky-daddy from religious beliefs. He’s Consciousness. Immaterial. Immeasurable. Just because we can’t perceive his existence with the naked eye, doesn’t mean he isn’t there.
Going back to what happened, I was stationed at a military facility deep underground. It was a facility whom the location I was not aware of, other than seeing a vast, flat desert. They called this place ‘Base 42’ and according to the science nerds I overheard at the place, this wasn’t on earth. They weren’t wrong, since I was told to go outside, only to be met with that desert, and this world’s sun was blue in color. How I got here was an odd-looking jet that had no windows on any of its sides. Instead, there was only a glass windshield in the front.
My guess was we were on another planet, or perhaps, another universe.
It wasn’t until I finally got an answer and explanation from our drill instructor.
“Welcome to Ganymede, team!” he said, putting me in a state of shock and awe.
“I’m sergeant Genghis, your senior drill instructor. Most of you don’t know this, but you were selected by our organization for a specific purpose! You’re here because to them, you have the capacity and cohesiveness to deal with forces outside human understanding! Do you maggots understand that!?”
“Sir yes sir!” everyone said, except for me. I was caught up in shock to even say a word, and without realizing it, I caught the drill sergeant’s attention.
“What is your major malfunction, deaf ears!? You need hearing aids!?” he yelled.
“Sir no sir!” I responded.
“Then why the fuck didn’t you answer my question, deaf ears!?” he asked.
“Sir, I’m sorry for not paying attention to you, sir! I was shocked and thinking about how we ended up in Ganymede, sir!”
Then just like that, he gave me a hard slap in the face.
“Let that slap be an imprint, a reminder to fucking pay attention! Understand, deaf ears!?”
“Sir yes sir!” I responded.
“Good! But from now on, your name is private deaf ears!” he told me before he continued.
After our initial introduction, we were told training would begin with Sergeant Genghis in 4 hours’ time. So, for the moment, I decided to wander around the facility, trying to get a sense of familiarity with the place. That’s when I noticed a woman sitting at one of the desks behind an oval table. Of course, I felt guilty about what had come to mind next when I saw her. Why? It’s because it got her attention and she looked at me and smiled with a slight blush.
“Nice to meet you, young man. I’m called colonel shapeshifter. I’d appreciate it if you’d kindly stop thinking such things about me in your little fantasy and keep your dick in your pants at all times. What is your name?” Colonel Shapeshifter told me.
“Sorry about that. I get a bad habit of that sometimes. I’m called Private Deaf Ears. That’s what Sergeant Genghis called me.” I explained, feeling calm but also embarrassed for my thoughts.
“Private deaf ears, huh? Of course, I can tell you’re not lying, and asking was simply a formality of mine to tell whether you’re lying or not. It seems you’re concerned about Ganymede, right? I should tell you that’s exactly what you think it is.” she told me.
That shook me to my core. I believed that Ganymede was supposed to be a moon, an icy moon at that too. However, what I’m seeing is nothing like the Ganymede I learned about, and I received an explanation as to why.
“We’re in the astral realm, private.” Colonel Shapeshifter.
“The astral realm? But, how?” I asked her.
“That jet plane you boarded under orders, is not just an ordinary plane. That plane is designed with the capacity to travel into the astral and ethereal realms. Your bodies de-materialize even without you realizing or noticing it. Then you were brought to Ganymede. Yes, the moon is as icy and cold as seen with the naked eye from NASA’s pictures. However, in the astral realms, the moon would appear different than what you’d expect. Even gas giants, ice giants and stars are teeming with life, yet that life is non-corporeal. There does exist planets and stars that are non-corporeal as well.” she then explained.
“I see. Well, it might make perfect sense.” I said, thinking about that mythical planet we call, Nibiru. She laughed. “Nibiru is there, but non-corporeal in nature. Also, I know what else you are thinking. I’m called Colonel Shapeshifter, and no, this is not my false appearance. It’s my real appearance. I’m human like you. I received the title because I can shapeshift into anyone anytime I wish.” she explained before shapeshifting to look exactly like me. “Even you.” she said, with her voice now matching mine. This left me shocked and flabbergasted. She started laughing. “You stopped having those fantasies now. I guess I should look like you from now on.” she explained with a smirk.
“Yeah, I’m sorry about those thoughts. I guess it’s something a guy like me does at times.” I said, embarrassed again. “Your concern is unwarranted. There are worse men out there.” she explained. She then lifted a finger up and emitted a small orb above her fingertip.
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it.
A song emitted from that orb. It was a small snippet from one of Beyonce’s songs. Then she laughed and remarked how her husband put a ring on her first before the other guys fantasize about being with her. “Just don’t get frisky or touchy with me, or I’ll kick your ass.” she then told me before chuckling. Then, her chuckle was cut short. That’s when she looked up at the skies. “They’re here.” she said and then ordered me to go outside and meet up with Genghis.
She and I both went outside to greet what was coming. When I went outside, I noticed small, triangular-shaped crafts heading towards our location. There were four of them from what I could tell. One of them landed, and when I got closer to get a better look, the ship itself was smaller than it looked. It was about the size of a mini cooper. This is when things got really interesting.
From the craft, there appeared to be a small, white light, emitting from the top. Following it, multiple large figures materialized in front of us. There appeared to be 30 of them, with two figures being humans wearing black suits, while the others resembled small gray aliens with large heads and large eyes.
I began to wonder if they all came from those crafts, and then I got my answer.
“No, just that one that landed.” Colonel Shapeshifter told me.
First, I land on a supposedly icy moon that seems to have a desert with a blue sun, now I see about 30 figures coming from that small craft? It didn’t make sense. How?
Even to this day, it still doesn’t make sense to me, even though it should. I guess I’m just hard-headed to understand how things in the astral work, compared to the material plane we live in.
When the beings came from the craft, one of the humans approached Colonel Shapeshifter to give her a message. I looked at her, wanting to see if she was smiling or calm. However, as I looked at her face, she actually looked anxious, as if something bad happened. Her eyes met mine after that.
“Yes, it’s a bad sign that they’re here.”
I realized she spoke to me telepathically, not moving her lips.
The man finally came face to face with her.
“Since you’re here, that means the mission was a failure, yes? How’s the situation?” she then asked.
That’s when he replied:
“Yes, and the situation is worse. Much worse. They’ve taken over our moon.”
I then heard her breathing rapidly and sounding terrified. I noticed her eyes widened in fear. Then, I heard Genghis utter three words.
“God help us.”

2024.05.14 23:48 Connect-Will2011 Science Fiction idea:

It’s a post-apocalyptic setting.
The story begins with a struggling new civilization. They seem to be fighting the good fight, using science and rational thinking to advance in this challenging new world. They seem to be winning, marking new milestones of progress every year.
Their worldview is certain and optimistic: their ability to reason gives them the competitive edge over the animals, and perhaps the whole natural world.
But then they encounter another tribe of humans who have been born feral. They have none of the traits that the civilized people value. They have no morals, no empathy and no mercy. These are true savages, human in shape only, living as animals.
The civilized people have a humanistic ethos, and they do want to see the feral people as human beings, but they are repeatedly disappointed.
As time goes by, the feral people out-compete the civilized people at every turn. When natural resources become available, the ferals get it before the others can. When new shelter is found, the ferals occupy it immediately, while the civilized humans are left shivering in the cold.
Their worldview is shaken to the core. As it turns out, their own structured society, their rules-based way of acting, everything they believe in, all of it is a handicap. It’s a handicap that makes it impossible to compete with the primitives, the ones without any sense of honor, rules or law.
The science-minded ones ponder: All of us have the primitive selves within us. Could we use the base of our brains, the so-called “lizard brain” to inform certain ones of us? Could we raise a group of base-thinkers to act in our interests…?
Have our own feral people?

2024.05.14 23:43 Vegetable-Ocelot-800 Scared for my future

Hi guys! I’m currently an incoming freshman and a current psych major. I hope to double major in neuroscience to transfer into the cns. I really worried about two main things: one is being accepted into the College of natural sciences and two is getting the grades I desire. I feel like I’ve been able to do the bare minimum and get good grades in highschool , but I’ve heard that UT has a little bit of a grade deflation which worries me a little. I am kind of an average slightly above average student if that makes any sense. what has been yall’s experience academically at this college? Did you notice GPA drop? do you guys have any idea how difficult it would be for me to transfer into the college of natural sciences? What steps would I need to take in order to guarantee admission? Thank you!

2024.05.14 23:32 Starraing Has life always been like this?

I want to read all the science fiction works and sail to different galaxies in my dreams every night. I want to wear the clothes I've made myself,I want to play a record in my own room, and flip through old magazines that are ready to be trendy again. The puppy lies at my feet, and on the table is my favorite iced latte. I wish my friends could live their own lives, though we may not contact each other very often, but when we meet again, we can still dance together and talk about everything.
I don't want to make wishes anymore, I don't want to just sit here tapping on a keyboard, there must be a pair of boots in the world that belongs only to me, I just haven't found them yet.
Has life always been like this? I have lived like this life all my life.

2024.05.14 23:13 page999 attempt at drawing my oc

attempt at drawing my oc
forgive my drawing and laziness with the outlines. i’m no artist, but i like to create characters and thought this would be fun.
this is vance, a narcissistic model. he was born to a cold mother and abusive father in england 2008, and died a year ago aged 15 after being stabbed 19 times to death by a classmate. finding himself in hell, he’d been thoroughly lost and distressed, until valentino unfortunately found him and offered him a home. unknowing of his nature, vance had accepted and signed a contract agreeing to model for velvette and, when he came of age, act in valentino’s porn films for a period of 3 years. already not particularly enjoying the suggestive poses struck during shoots, he isn’t looking forward to turning eighteen. he likes to pretend that he enjoys being in hell, but in reality he doesn’t see himself as a sinner and desperately wants to get to heaven.
vance is undeniably, and to his absolute joy, very attractive (i know the drawing doesn’t convey any of this), his face a blend of uncommon features which, when put together, produce a breathtakingly beautiful result. he has deep black pits for eyes and glossy hair, which was a shiny shade of chasmic carmine red, razor-straight and falling to his shoulders where the ends bounce and curl stylishly. his body is a pale green, smooth skin stretch over and elegant bones. the sole things he detests about his appearance are the remnants of his stab wounds, thin white lines meshed across his abdomen. they sicken him, and he does all that he can to ignore them. he wears whatever he can dig out of velvette’s piles of old collections, but is particularly fond of waistcoats and short, swishy skirts. he’s also a passionate turtleneck enthusiast, for reasons unknown. to the exceptional frustration of hell’s biggest modelling agencies whose contracts he ignores, and to the delight of velvette’s, everything looks good on vance (i know that i didn’t depict this in the drawing, just imagine he looks good!). he frequents magazine covers featuring ‘hell’s hottest’, found posing provocatively, skin showing with a signature smirk.
i’m not familiar with this sub, and these paragraphs are all bits copied and pasted from my literary archives (my notes app), so the order may be a little jumbled or tenses mixed up. not sure if i was supposed to include other information, idk. hope u like vance :)

2024.05.14 22:54 Free-Selection-3454 Observations after changing schools. Is it just me?

Hi all,This year I moved to a new school after 7 years in a previous school (Catholic college - primary and secondary). I left due to 2 colleagues I once admired, respected, enjoyed working with and called friends either bullying, excluding and/or undermining me in front of my students and theirs across the whole school year.Moved to a new school (Catholic and systemtic) and am finding many of their ways of operating very foreign, adding to my work and time and am constantly frustrated by lack of consistency, lack of standards and zero acknowledgement of my noticeable student progression and improvement since my arrival.
A few factors that are frustrating and aggravating:
-Apart from myself and one other staff member, ALL other staff (teachers, Teacher Assistants, the Deputy, office admin, specialists) are ALL part-time in the primary campus. In and of itself this is not a problem, however it leads to a lack of consistency and stability for me as I am constantly playing catch-up due to the rotating nature of the year-level team. It affects student behaviour (not so much mine, but the other classes) due to no consistency with teachers. Seems to be a high level of rotating teahers on LSL (short stints) and staff on and off from parental leave. No staff nmeeting I have been to yet has had all staff there.
-Behaviour of students is atrocious when compared to other schools in the area and previous schools from my decade + experience. Students are verbally rude, cannot settle and focus and there are often physical altercations in the playground. I've spent a term and a half really breaking down behaviour expectations, routines and standards. I am making progress, but there is so much stacked against us.
-Parent copmmunity is INTENSE. Moreso than I have ever experienced. Teachers are consistently told their "tone"when talking to parents is rude/negative/insert critique here, parents are constantly emailing teachers to complain about other children and flat out ignoring any and all comunication about their own child. When I asked leadership about this, the reasoning given is either, "Parents at this school have always been like this" or "It's the culture of the area. We get families from all over"meaning the greater metropolitan area. I persoinally do not think this argument holds up as previous schools I've been at have accepted students from relatively large areas in terms of distance.
-EVERYTHING is done as a team." While this sounds great on the face of it, it adds so much to personal workloads when reporting, individual lesson planning, unit planning, NCCD work, resouirce development and/or sourcing, sending emails to parents, responding to emails from parents and more all has to be done as a committee of 7 people. Nothing gets done efficiently or within a desired timeframe.
-Classes - For each year level (double-stream), we routinely mix and match students. Not just for programs (e.g. Spelling) but for ALL subjects and curriculum areas. This means that in theory, I have a class of 31 (e.g. my roll call list), however in any given lesson I could be receiving students from the next-door class. Sometimes the classes stay the same (students) but we (teachers) swap. This makes assessing and reporting a nightmare, as it is unproductive, inefficient and there is no consistency. The reason for this has nothing to do with student learning, outcomes or development. It occurs "to stop parents complaining about which teacher they do/do not get for their child," "to stop parents emailing and complaining about if child x or y is in their child's class."It also means that due to the way the "team-teaching" works, I will never teach certain subjects (e.g. Science or Geography) this year. I have been given subjects the other teachers on Year 5 do not want: Religion, History for example
-Students miss out on opportunities for growth, e.g. in Science as we need to fill out risk assessments for items like using the school oval outside of lunch times and for simple, basic Science experiments (e.g. mixing two liquids - liquids that are not hot, cold). EVERY science experiment of any category needs a risk assessment.I came in so excited about subjects like Science... no more. Can't take the class outside for a brain break as we'd have to book the oval and fill out a risk assessment.
-Class sizes are 31+ and the school has a high volume of EAL and students with various diagnoses. In a class of 31, 20+ are either EAL and/or have a diagnosis (e.g. autism, ADHD, etc)-Zero autonomy. I have to go through 3 supervisors just to respond to a parent email (even if it is wholly positive), I am told what kind of visual aid posters I can/can't have in my room (e.g. a times table chart or a poster on English contractions).
-Release time a joke. I have to sit in my class cupboard as this is the only place in the school that is:--Free of gossiping staff--Free of staff talking in general--The only place staff and/or students will not interrupt me.-Staff are friendly (cheerfully greeting/seeing how my day is/was, seeming interested in me as a person and educator) but there is so much gossip about each other and parents/families. I could go to a staff member with a purely work-related question (e.g. planning or how a school process works) and the conversation almost always ends up being twisted to a poorly behaved student/complaining/gossiping. Even after I have point blank made it clear I do not engage in gossip and find it fractures teams/colleagues and do not have the time for it.
-Multiple duties each day of the week (as we are únderstaffed'' - same as every other school in Australia)-Duty roster (playground) changes every single week due to the high volume of absent staff, staff with multiple roles, etc So no stability or consistency there either.-Foced to pay money into a school social club each week for amenities (e.g. milk/coffee/biscuits) which I never use in a staffroom I never visit or for gifts of departing/retiring/staff going on parental leave.... Yet every time a staff member fits these categories, we get emails from leaders asking if we would like to choose to put towards a gift.... so unsure why I was told the social club goes to gifts. Tried getting out of it in writing (I pay more being one of the few full-time staff) only to be told, "In your contract, you signed that you will be paying money into the social club." Nothing in my contract at all, and I asked the state union to have a look just in case I am blind and having a man's look. They too clearly stated there is nothing in there.
My question is, after 7 years in a school I enjoyed (apart from the aforementioned 2 colleagues changing how they interact with me) is this the norm in Australian Catholic schools (primary and/or combined primary/secondary colleges). I used to be so effective, productive and built strong and positive student relationships. I am now ineffective, unproductive, my time and experience is wasted and my experience seems to be for naught.
*Is this the new normal?
*Is anyone else so utterly heartbroken, soul-crushed and demoralised (and I guess, angry and frustrated) by red tape/inefficiency/unproductiveness, etc?
Any thoughts? Cheers, legends.

2024.05.14 22:40 ConfidentLeg7645 Japan (Honshu) 3 Week Spring Trip Report. A perfect trip (almost)!.

LONG POST WARNING
Hello everyone,
My partner (24F) and I (25M) returned home from our 3-week Japan trip last week and due to us using this sub a lot during our planning I thought it would be helpful for other current planners to upload a trip report.
Our main interests are Japanese traditions and history, street style/culture, and food so keep reading if these interests are mutual. Read to the bottom to see how much we spent plus some tips and disappointments.
Prelude
We were caught up in the madness at Dubai airport during our layover. Long story short; Airport (and the rest of Dubai) flooded and caused all the flights to be cancelled. What was meant to be a 5-hour layover turned into a torturous 36 hour wait. No staff to be seen, crowds of people arguing, fighting, and crying. We queued for 12 hours to get a new boarding pass for the next flight to Japan. We were meant to fly to Haneda but settled for Narita as we needed to get out of that place as soon as possible but still ended up missing our first day in Tokyo (should have had 5 days). We can’t complain too much as some of the people I spoke to on emirates were in the airport for up to 5 days before getting a flight back to their departure destination. Oh, and our baggage was missing with us only receiving our checked in bags on day 19. Cheers Emirates.
Day 1
Arrived in Shinjuku around midnight. We went straight to Don Quiojte to buy some replacement cosmetics and clothes. The combination of no good-quality sleep for 48 hours and the stimulating nature of the store was very intense! We then started to walk back towards the hostel and passed a Ichiran, so dropped in for some 2am ramen. Not the best ramen I’ve ever had but was still very good for the price.
Steps: 21,643 (includes some airport steps)
Day 2
Woke up and ate the free breakfast at the hostel (this turned out to be a really good money saver for the whole trip as we are not huge eaters in the morning anyway, but it was good to get something light in us before a long day walking). We then walked through the Shinjuku Gyoen Garden – saw some late blooming cheery blossoms and overall, it was a really beautiful botanical garden.
The next stop was Meji Shrine and a walk through Yoyogi park. The shrine was cool to see, especially as it was our first one in Japan. Saw a middle-aged man wearing denim hotpants so short that his balls were hanging out?!?!
Walked to Shibuya to see the scramble. This was cool but also felt it was a bit underwhelming at ground level but the view from Shibuya station walkway was wicked. Lunch was at a conveyor belt sushi place on the top floor of this department store right next to the scramble. This would be higher than average quality sushi in Europe, so it blew our minds that it was available on the top floor of a department store and for so cheap.
Shimokitazawa – We picked up some bargains at 2nd street and I treated myself some Japanese jeans from a small Demin shop called Bears. The guy in the shop was super helpful and friendly and even tailored the trousers to exactly my size.
In the evening, we first had a poke around Golden Gai and then headed towards Shibuya and stopped in a cool bar where the owner was mixing vinyl while he mixed your drinks (think it was called Q Bar).
We had previously bought tickets to a gig at Circus for one of my fav rappers who I’d been wanting to see for a while. Also really enjoyed seeing the local Japanese warm up acts. Stayed until 5am and then go the train straight to the Tsukiji outer fish market. Was there way too early and had to wait roughly an hour for thing to open. Went to chill by a bench for a bit and by the time we went back to the market it was rammed! Went to bed around 8:30am.
Steps: 32,159
Day 3
We woke up at 2:30pm, got ready, and headed to the Bunkyo civic centre for the free observation deck. We heard it wasn’t meant to be the best Tokyo skyline view but for a free attraction we thought it was very good! Jimbocho book town was also very cool to see. We had a peak into a couple adult movie/magazine stores where I don’t think the owner appreciated our presence as western tourists.
In the evening, we first went for Ramen at Motenashi Kuraki in Asakusa Bashi. Honestly probably the best Ramen I’ve had to date. I ordered the Black Pepper Shio special, and it blew my mind. Even though the staff didn’t speak English they were very accommodating for my partner who doesn’t eat meat (pescetarian but will brave a meaty broth).
We then had a stroll around Akihabara and played some dance mat games in the arcades before heading back for an earlyish night.
Steps: 28,680
Day 4
I couldn’t sleep so got up around 3am and did some admin stuff to try and get our bags back to us ASAP. Chatted to people in the hostel for a few hours.
We arrived at Senso-ji for around 8am. Wasn’t too busy at this time and the temple was impressive. Went for a coffee down the road and had a chill for about an hour before heading into Asakusa. Got admission to the Drum museum which was wicked. Only 400 yen each and had the whole place to ourselves to smack some big fucking drums and make as much noise as we wanted.
We then started to head towards Ueno but made a slight detour to Kappabashi Dougu street to peruse the Japanese chef knives and other cookware. Grabbed lunch from a 7/11 and went and sat in Ueno park which was super busy. There was some food market event on which loads of food stalls had set up. There was also a stage with some J-pop performers and people dressed as ninjas dancing in the crowd. Weird to say the least. By mid-afternoon we were pretty tired so headed back to the hostel for a nap.
In the evening, we headed down to Harajuku and stopped by Big Love records. My partner is really into vinyl, so this was definitely a highlight for her. She picked up Wu Tang 36 chambers in case you were wondering. We then went for food at Afuri as my partner wanted to try the Vegan ramen to which she said it was ok but nothing special. My cold dipping noodle dish was very tasty, however. We then stumbled across this vinyl listening bar called Bar Music on the 5th floor of this pokey building on the outskirts of Shibuya for a few drinks before bed. There was such a good vibe in there and the cocktails were super good for the price. If you’re looking for a romantic spot, then this is the place to go.
Steps: 31,818
Day 5
Today we headed to Kyoto on the shinkansen around midday after a slow morning chilling in and around the hostel and catching up on some sleep. Checked in to the hostel and had a walk around downtown Kyoto, stopping at 2nd Street to buy some more clothes.
In the evening, we headed to Kodai-Ji to see the shrine lit up at night. We couldn’t believe how few people were there as it was stunning and truly magical place to be at night. It also has a bamboo grove (much better than Arashiyama, see below). The bar for Kyoto shrines/temples had been set very high.
Walked down Pontocho alley and stopped at a yakitori restaurant which was just ok. We knew it was going to be average when we looked around the restaurant and it was just western tourists dining.
Steps: 25,255
Day 6
First thing in the morning we rented bikes and cycled across the city to Arashiyama. Parked the bikes at the train station and walked up through Arashiyama. We were expecting it to be busy but there were so many people it was almost impossible to move. Had a look around the bamboo grove and was slightly underwhelmed after our visit to Kodai-Ji so we took the tram and then bus up to Kosan-Ji. This was very much worth the 45-minute journey as there was only one other group there and the temple nestled between the trees overlooking the river was breath-taking. On the whole, Arashiyama was way too packed during peak times to enjoy and with everything else Kyoto has to offer we wouldn’t say it was a must see.
We then picked up the bikes from the train station and cycled back across Kyoto taking the long route to explore and get lost. Once we dropped off the bikes, we went for another explore and this time went into WeGo for more clothes shopping. At this point we’d pretty much matched the amount of clothing that we had packed in our checked-in luggage that was still stuck in Dubai.
After a nap we walked towards the metro and stopped at a Katsu restaurant as we wanted to try something different, and it was pretty good. For the price of 1300 yen each we got so much food/sake and left stuffed.
Fushimi Inari in the evening. Like Kodai-Ji, we would recommend visiting Fushimi Inari at night. Firstly, to help avoid the crowds (we got there around 9pm and there was hardly anybody there) and secondly as seeing it lit up at night is a nice change. It was however slightly creepy at night, especially as it was lightly raining. My partner started to get a bit scared once we saw the signs to be careful of the wild boar and monkeys haha. We didn’t make it to the top of Mt Inari as the rain started to get heavy but still very much enjoyed walking through the hundreds of tori gates, stopping off at the shrines and soaking up the history.
Steps: 23,686
Day 7
Today was a late start as even after 8 hours sleep the 25k plus steps a day was starting to catch up with us.
We took the metro to Shimogamo Shrine in north Kyoto. It was very peaceful and quiet however temple fatigue had definitely set in at this point. We then walked through Kyoto to the beginning of Philosophers path. We had seen on this sub that people recommend skipping it unless its Sakura season however we disagree. The path along the river is so pretty and atmospheric, along with the fish gently swimming along in the river.
Kyoto Hand Crafts Centre – if you have the money then this is a great place to pick up souvenirs.
Pre-booked Sushi Iwa for a 15 course Omakase. The food was amazing, but it came to an eye watering 28k yen each. The difference for our western palettes between mid-range sushi and exceptional sushi is negligible. Nonetheless it was a good experience and I’m glad that we did it.
Steps: 23,751
Day 8
Today was an empty day in terms of things we wanted to do, so used it to walk the city and explore.
We checked out the Nishiki market and ate various fried foods on sticks which were all pretty tasty. We then walked northwards, stopping for coffee before reaching the imperial palace. By this point we were very much bored of temples and structures of similar architecture, but we actually ended up enjoying walking the palace grounds and seeing the buildings more than we thought and would recommend it to those who find themselves in north Kyoto.
A leisurely walk back down towards downtown Kyoto, stopping off at a wicked standing soba joint. Forgotten the name but their curry soba was delicious.
Chao Chao gyozas (only veggie gyoza place we could find) for our evening meal before a night cap at the bar across the road before bed.
Steps: 23,304
Day 9
Shinkansen to Hiroshima arriving around 11am.
Checked into hostel and then went straight to the A-dome, peace memorial and museum. We thought the museum was very moving and captured the horror of the events that unfolded very well. A must see for sure.
Okonomiyaki at Okonomimura and then some vintage clothes shopping in Hondori.
Went back out for food in the evening and ended up getting Okonomiyaki again. This time it we enjoyed it a lot more than we did at lunch (probably because we got it covered in cheese). There are a few streets by Hiroshima station with lots of bars and restaurants on top of each other, much like Golden Gai in Shinjuku, however they are not super touristy and has a more laid-back feel to them.
We then went to some bars in the city centre. The best one we stumbled across was called Tropical Bar Revolucion. It was on the 8th floor and the smoking balcony overlooked the city. Plus, the beers in there tasted so good and I’m not sure why.
Steps: 23,299
Day 10
A hungover morning. Headed to the Hiroshima National Gardens. Going to some gardens is my go-to hangover activity as its low effort, relaxing, and feels productive. These gardens in particular were great and we really appreciated the signs explaining the history behind the space. Overall, we enjoyed this more than the national gardens in Shinjuku.
Public baths near Dobashi in the afternoon. If you’re feeling brave enough to get your kit off in front of 10s of strangers, then this is a good experience. Male and female baths are separate. Can’t go wrong for 400 yen.
Went for a drink at Bar Pretty and then realised the effect of golden week on trying to get a table walking into a restaurant. Walked around for about an hour with no success so settled for food from a department store food court. Sounds miserable but the food was pretty good for the price, and it was busy in there, so it still had an atmosphere.
Steps: 29,487
Day 11
Miyajima Day. Took the ferry to the island arriving at 10:30am. The Ryokan staff met us at the port and collected our bags to take back to the hotel.
Had a mooch around the port area before doing the hike up Mt Misen. The climb to the top on a hot day is not to be underestimated. Sweating buckets, but the route and the view from the top was amazing and one of the standout highlights of the whole trip.
After descending Mt Misen, we bought some beers, oysters and, ice cream and sat along the beach wall and chilled in the sun for a couple hours. The hotel staff then picked us up from the ferry terminal, we checked in and went straight to the Onsen for a couple hours before dinner. Dinner was a traditional kaiseki meal (with more courses than I can remember) served in the banquet hall with the other guests.
While the staff converted our retro ryokan room and set up the futons we had a few more beers before bed.
Steps: 20,803
Day 12
Today we had a chilled morning on the island, having a stroll and stopping for some coffees. We then took the ferry back to Hiroshima, stopping for Okonomiyaki one more time, before taking the shinkansen to Osaka.
Checked into our hostel near Namba and went out for a walk around 8pm. When looking for somewhere to eat we walked past a sign for a vegetarian Indian restaurant called Shama. After nearly two weeks of pure Japanese food we were craving some variety so decided to head in. Located on the basement floor of a particularly run down looking building the restaurant was not the most glamorous. Barely enough space for 10 people, it was hot in there. A constant stream of people was coming in and out of the restaurant and we were lucky enough to walk in when there were two spaces available. From sitting down at the table to receiving our food we waited just under an hour. This would be enough to put most people off but fuck me the food was good when it did finally arrive. We got a selection of 4 different curries, naan breads and samosa. We left stuffed. If you’re in the area this is definitely a place worth checking out.
Steps: 25,502
Day 13
Our first stop of the day was the Umeda Sky Building. Not suitable if you are scared of heights as the glass elevator made our stomachs drop slightly. The views were impressive but we thought the price was a bit steep at 1500 yen each.
We then spent the afternoon wondering about near Namba and Shinsujibashi dropping into shops and picking up some food.
For dinner we made a reservation for a Mexican restaurant near Dotonbori. Massive margheritas, nachos and enchiladas. The food was great, and it shows by how busy the place was still at 10pm. It had been open since the late 70’s with the décor to match and it had a great atmosphere.
Steps: 27,290
Day 14
Checked out Tsuruhashi and Korea Town. Loved the market – dimly lit maze of numerous food and clothing vendors. Stopped to have some Korean stew and pancakes and it was delicious. One of the best meals of the trip.
Shinsekai in the evening. What I can describe as the armpit of Osaka. We loved it. Dirty? Yes. Rowdy? Yes. Rough around the edges with a red light district to top it all off. We had Kushikatsu to finish the evening off. Fried stuff on a stick – of course it going to be tasty but it wasn’t exactly flavour town.
Steps: 23,777
Day 15
Took the train to Minoh and hiked up the trail to see the waterfall. Hike was easy in comparison to Mt Misen and the waterfall was very cool to see. Had a wonder around Minoh stopping for some lunch at a Ramen bar.
We went to the Team lab botanical gardens in the evening. It was very awe inspiring seeing all the installations lit up.
After sampling Japanese McDonalds (I had a burger where the buns were made out of rice) we went for some drinks at Zerro. We liked this bar a lot, the guys working there were very friendly and it had a good vibe.
We then sat and watched the skaters at triangle park with some beers from the konbini before going to see Dj Masda at Circus until around 4am. This area of Osaka was such a vibe and came back here a few times over our 6 days here. Overall, a very fun evening.
Steps: 26,130
Day 16
Woke up chronically hungover but powered on and went to see a baseball game. You’re allowed to bring food and drink into the stadium (as long as alcohol is in plastic/paper cups) so we grabbed some beers and snacks from family mart. We had no idea what was happening but the atmosphere was electric and we enjoyed getting pissed and cheering.
Had a nap and then went to Hafez for middle eastern food. The food was good but not amazing, nothing in comparison to my local middle eastern restaurant back home. Chilled around the Namba park/Big step area. Loved this area so much, we are big into street fashion and culture so this place really ticked some boxes. Lots of skaters and street wear stores concentrated around here. Got an early night watching Battle Royale back at the hostel.
Steps: 22,065
Day 17
Today we went to the Umeda area. Popped into some shopping centres and had Omurice for lunch. It was tasty but not something I will crave when back home. Good experience trying it though. We then walked through Yodoyobashi along the rivers and got gelato and sat in the rose garden. The sun was beating down and we enjoyed just chilling in the sun eating our ice cream.
Compufunk Records were holding a party in their store. Decent gaff with some very welcoming and kind people to party with until the early hours.
Steps: 21,267
Day 18
We reluctantly left Osaka for Hakone today. Very sad to go but onwards to the next adventure. Took the shinkansen to Odawara and then the Hakone Tozan Train to Gora. Checked into our Ryokan and relaxed in the Onsen for a few hours.
Went for a walk around Gora and had dinner at the Ryokan before watching Predator in bed.
Steps: 16,926
Day 19
Today we did the Hakone Loop, starting early in Gora.
Started with the Open-air museum and it was great. We loved the installation and ended up spending 3 hours slowly making our way round. Got some cool photos as well for the gram.
Ropeway to Lake Ashi. This was absolutely terrifying. You have to swap cable cars 3 times on the way over and the warnings of the service being suspended due to the wind was announced at each stop. I’m not going to ruin the surprise, but one section made me literally freeze in terror due to the winds outside so try to do it on a calm weather day.
We then took the pirate boat (bit underwhelming) across the Lake and stopped for some soba noodles and a wander around. Unfortunately it was way too cloudy to even get a chance at seeing Mt Fuji.
Train to Kamakura and checked into our super cute traditional hostel near the beach.
Dinner at an Izakaya from the hostel owners recommendation. Food great and beers slipped down a treat. First time I tried Yuzu Kosho as well – I’m now addicted to the stuff and literally cover all my food with it.
Steps: 19,512
Day 20
A slow start to the morning. Weather was pretty bad but we still managed to hit all the main sights in Kamakura. Big Buddha was a refreshing sight from the temples. Did some shopping up Komachi Dori. Highlight of the day was Hukokaji temple. It was so peaceful and zen in the rain with its very own matcha tea ceremony backdropped by bamboo forest. This turned out to be our second favourite temple/shrine we visited, just being beaten by Kodaji.
In the evening we went for Sushi at a conveyor belt place. Figured this would probably be my last Japanese sushi of the trip so devoured 7000 yen worth of sushi and beer. Went back to the hostel and invited some of the other guests to drink with us. The owner of the hostel had some bayberry homebrew, so we got stuck into that.
Steps: 20,494
Day 21
Enoshima Island is just a 25 min train from Kamakura. Started off the day by walking to the top of the island to get French toast and a beer with a lovely view across the bay. We then headed up the Sea candle to check out the observation deck, still the illusive Mt Fuji hides behind the clouds.
We then bought admission to the caves beneath the island which was pretty cool. I won’t ruin the surprise but there’s something waiting for you at the end of one of the caves.
Had an explore around the rockpools near the caves and took some cool photos. We then had a pizza with fish on which was pretty crazy. Walked around the island a little bit more and I picked up some more Japanese denim which wasn’t the cheapest but the quality of the trousers are great and will last me a lifetime.
Back to Tokyo in the evening.
Went for Izakaya around Asakusa and popped into a couple bars. One was called Not Suspicious and the whole bar was covered in handwritten notes by patrons. Very touristy but quite cool at the same time. Our favourite was a drawing of Mario saying It’s a Me Muthafucka.
Steps: 25,903
Day 22
First stop was Don Quiojte to pick up some Yuzu Kosho (if you know you know) and weird flavoured KitKats.
Kappabashi Dougu street to purchase a fine Japanese carbon stell Santoku. Honestly in love with this knife so much. The people at the store were very happy to hear exactly what I was looking for and even let me try before you buy on some daikon radish.
While in Asakusa I had to return to the place where I put the best thing in my mouth in Japan. Motenashi Kuroki. Switched it up this time and had their classic Shio ramen plus the duck rice as a side. Honestly this place is amazing, and you have to go there if you have time. They aren’t veggie/pescy friendly so my partner went for one last round of sushi round the corner. We met up at a massage chair parlour and spent 30 mins relaxing in the chairs.
We had a bright idea to watch the sunset one last time so headed over to the rooftop park on a department store in Shibuya. Sipping on an ice cold Kirin, the sun slowly dropped behind the distant mountains and we knew our trip had come to an end. How symbolic.
Flight at 11pm from Haneda.
Steps: 23,187
On reflection:
I honestly think this trip was almost perfect in terms of hitting our interests and travel style. There was a good balance of doing the typical first time visit to Japan sights and activities while still exploring and seeing what we came across in the moment.
It hard to pinpoint exact highlights of the trip as everywhere we visited had so much going for it in different ways. We loved the rugged and trendy vibe to Osaka, and I think this would be the city I would most want to live in for a considerable amount of time (If I had to choose). Miyajima was also stunning and a great overnight trip with the Ryokan experience. We also underestimated how much we would enjoy Kamakura with its laid-back surfer vibe and access to Enoshima Island.
One random memorable moment that has stuck with me was when we landed at Narita airport, we took the limo bus to Shinjuku. As the driver pulled away, all the staff at the station turned and bowed in unison. It felt so special to first observe a culture totally opposite to the one I grew up with and was at this point I knew I had embarked on the trip of a lifetime.
If I could go back and change something I would probably miss out Hakone and do an extra day in one of the major cities. This isn’t because we didn’t enjoy Hakone, but we feel like it’s a place that needs more time to soak in what’s going on around you (plus the weather was bad when we were there). This being said the Open-Air Museum was amazing and we enjoyed it more than the Teamlab botanical gardens so the trip up the mountains was worth it just for that.
So, how much did we spend per person (not inc flights)?
Accommodation - £765pp
Given that we spent a couple nights in Ryokans raising the average price slightly, we were pretty happy with the accommodation costs. We stayed in a mix of private room and shared dorm hostels and pretty much all of them were spot on. Travelling as a couple meant that anywhere with a private room split the price between 2. The only hostel we didn’t like was the one in Hiroshima, there wasn’t anything in particularly wrong with it, there was just a really bad vibe from the owner and other guests.
Transport - £344pp
This includes shinkansen to and from all the major cities as well as our suica top ups for metros and buses. Unless your itinerary is something like 3 days Tokyo, 2 days Osaka 2 days Kyoto then there really isn’t any point getting the JR pass now that the price has increased.
Activities – £280pp
It is hard to give an exact amount for activities and food as 1) I didn’t track what we spent our cash on and 2) my partner and I would take in turns paying for things like temple admission. That being said I’ve allocated 25% of the cash we spent to activities such as temple admission. Activities includes our baseball tickets plus club entries as well as temple and museum admissions etc.
Food – £962pp
As above, its hard to give an exact amount for food. On the whole we tried to eat cheap with possible, especially at the start of our trip. There were a few expensive meals peppered in plus we ate out twice a day towards the end of our trip as we realised we were under budget.
The total is a bit skewed as this includes all the alcohol we bought in bars as well as the konbini trips for beers and cigarettes. I estimate that booze accounts for around a third of the total per person. If you would like to do Japan on a budget, reducing the booze will make a big difference.
Shopping/Souvenirs/Gifts – £607 (just me)
We went hard with the shopping. We didn’t actually receive our checked in luggage until day 19 so we had to buy all new clothes and cosmetics. If this wasn’t the case, then I don’t think I would have spent so much (airline is comping us for the additional clothing bought anyway). I also bought a fairly expensive chef knife and Japanese denim pieces, plus lots of gifts for friends and family. Obviously, this number could theoretically 0 if you are on a serious budget and did no shopping but I really underestimated Japanese shopping, especially thrifting. Also, given our cheap choices when it came to accommodation we could afford to splurge. However just to note my partner spent less than half than I did on shopping.
Total: £2958 (582,628 yen at time of writing)
I kept within my budget of £3000. I definitely got a bit frivolous with the cash in the last few days or so, if being as careful as I was towards the start of the trip, I think the total would be closer to £2500.
Disappointments
Takoyaki. We thought it was going to be all about the octopus but were disappointed with our balls of sloppy goo surrounding tiny chewy pieces of octopus. We tried it twice and couldn’t get behind it. Sorry Takoyaki fans.
Arashiyama. Way too busy, especially around the main station and bamboo grove. If it’s the bamboo you are going to see, then Kodaji is a much better spot.
Dotonburi. Albeit we were there in golden week, and it was pretty busy. However, I get the feeling this area has fallen to the past its golden days title and has become a bit of a cash cow for places selling spiralised potatoes on a stick. The area around Namba park was a better option for us.
Tips
Konbini. Absolute life saver for snacks and drinks on the go. The food quality for a convenience store is higher than most other countries so we had no problem with grabbing a meal from one to help keep within our budget.
Don’t over pack – even though we didn’t get our checked in bags, I still packed light so had plenty of space to bring stuff back. Emirates give you your allowance by weight rather than number of baggage so we could check in additional bags on the way back.
Don’t be scared of hostels. If you don’t want to brave the shared dorms, then most hostels offer private rooms with just the shower and toilet shared. Obviously, it’s cheaper if there are two people sharing a room.
Don’t stress about cash. Most places take debit/credit card and if they don’t, you’re never more than 5 minutes from a konbini ATM.
For us, golden week didn’t seem that big of an issue. No problems booking shinkansen around GW. We spent most of GW in Osaka, as such it was going to be busy anyway so maybe we didn’t see much of a difference from normal numbers in the spring.

2024.05.14 22:34 throwthrow619 [27/M] We are gonna be friends

Why hello there!
This, quite frankly, isn’t something I’m particularly good at, and I’m certainly not one for being able to sell myself :) But I guess this last year has been pretty lonely and I’d love to make some friends!
I’m 27 years old, and have an interest in loads of things, video games, science, nature, reading and lots of random pop culture things too. I’m currently reading a few fantasy books by Sanderson and am potentially thinking of reading the wheel of time - though it seems like a massive time sink haha! Oh and I’m a huge comedy nerd aha - I used to watch live standup every week pre covid!
The last year or so has been pretty stressful, I’m a healthcare worker, and I guess, like all of us, covid has had a big impact on my life plans.
I guess I’d love to talk to anyone :) I’m happy to talk here or on discord.

2024.05.14 22:19 ClickWhisperer I was raised on this propaganda and thought it was about science

I was raised on this propaganda and thought it was about science
I, like so many people raised in America, bought so many copies and even subscribed to Scientific American back when magazines were a thing. It "informed" me what to believe about science. Before I actually did science, and understood the difference between science and art, I used to think what I was reading was valuable, and was based on science and fact.
But now, in hindsight, reading old copies and reading what they're putting out now it's obvious that its about less science, more controlled opinion aka propaganda. Maybe its that todays propaganda is more slick, more subtle, less hamfisted and blatant than yesterdays? Maybe we're all more capable of sorting the wheat from the chaff now?
I can't look back at this publication I once considered credible without laughing at myself. Was it ever about science and not Science (TM)?

2024.05.14 22:01 Euphoric-Earth-4765 An inside look at the culture and ideology of Faith Comes By Hearing_PART 3

Most meetings should be an email:
Their “all hands on deck” meetings are early in the morning, even though the first three hours of your workday are your most precious and productive and should be reserved for the most important tasks where focus, attention, high cognitive function, willpower is needed, according to research. Willpower or mental energy regulates your thoughts, emotions, impulses, and performance control.
Top management has recurring meetings but it seems like the topic was determined 5 min beforehand because the meetings are often all over the place, with no clear agenda, and random topics. Often, they feel like a parent lecturing their teenager.
Meetings are mandatory. Most employees do not really have to be there. The meetings do not affect the actual day to day job functions. The main purpose for these meetings seems to be for unity (or the appearance of). They are often not productive. Not useful and not engaging for most employees. Not worth spending company time. Not used for coaching or mentoring. Not used for making decisions. They are not about a complex issue that needs to be talked through ideas and solutions. In actuality, 98% of the meetings should really just be emails. There are three regular weekly meetings: about 80-90% of them include testimonies or personal stories and about 10-20% is someone sharing statistics (about the products they produce) or status updates or the behind the scenes (how the "hotdogs" are made). One out of about four meetings involve a recount of the ministry's history. If one did not attend the meetings, nothing would change. There really would not be any consequences that would affect doing your job.
Finally, Managers or employees who have traveled internationally are the only ones that get to speak and address the entire ministry. Everyone else doesn't get a voice.
Testimonies or personal stories:
Stories and testimonies as a form of encouragement and motivation are not bad or not useful; however, there are other areas in the work culture that are lacking that destroy any built up motivation. Employees are expected to have some kind of emotional response to them. Over the months and years, stories and testimonies become overused. In fact, you will hear so many testimonies that, over time, they will blurr and you will probably become desensitized to them. Stories and testimonies are probably seen as a way of providing support to employees but other supports are also lacking and needed (e.g., better leadership, empowerment, resources, tools, better communication, regular check ins, accountability, empathy, feedback, personal and professional development). Stories, anecdotes, and testimonies seem to be used to deflect from some of the problems in the ministry culture.
Top management pressures employees to feel a certain way. They want them to always feel encouraged and motivated by everything and anything the ministry does:
If you replace "encourage" with Love" and then talk to your wife....
“I took out the trash, that should make you feel loved. I mowed the lawn, that should make you feel loved. I picked up my laundry, that should make you feel loved. I went exercised today, that should make you feel loved. i helped an old lady cross the street.”
This makes it all about YOU, not how your wife actually feels! in fact, you are manipulating her to feel a certain way by what you did!
"If you are not feeling loved by all these things I did, then something is wrong with YOU.”
So management tells employees how they should be feeling about things. Performance is often not rewarded. Many employees do not know how much management cares about them as a person. What would be really encouraging is if management gave employees confidence, listed better, spoke to their needs, and empowered them.
Meetings - introverts vs extroverts:
Meetings are not set up to accommodate the basic differences between introverts and extroverts (e.g., how they best think, work, process information, communicate, learn; introverts typically dislike noise and big group settings) nor of how people need to manage their energy (ultradian rhythms). Management does not use information about individual team members’ personalities and predilections to formulate norms and dynamics that are respectful to everyone. Research indicates that in a typical six-person meeting, two people do more than 60% of the talking. In bigger groups, like the 100+ group at FCBH, the problem is worse. Management allows a certain dominant personality to do all the talking. They are not coached to listen, reflect, and become more open to the perspectives of their more silent peers. Top management does not send the meeting agenda in advance and ask for written feedback to give introverts time to formulate thoughts and summon the courage to share them.
Management’s definition of a “successful” meeting is different from that of other organizations. Top management does not appear to have any training in meeting science. Most meetings do not provide value to all attendees. They are not set up for employees to contribute and add value to them. Also, no opportunities to give feedback on meeting quality when meetings end.
A “Christian” version of CRT:
The opinions and perspectives of international employees are valued over local/american employees. Employees who are international (and especially those who live in persecuted areas) are often prioritized and favored. Their voice, their input, is often considered more important because top management pressures them to share and speak.
If there is a need, entire ministry is notified to pray if the need is from internationals but not if the need is local.
Personal convictions. Money:
Top management tends to have some childhood trauma, that is the root cause of their strong personal convictions, that often comes out during their mandatory meetings. These “preaching” moments usually have to do with money. They grew up poor or had strict parents or been around groups, ministries, and churches that abused money and now they get triggered or feel guilty when they see new things and resist replacing things like whiteboards and chairs: "if we already have something, we don't need to replace it = if it ain't broke, don't fix/replace it. wear your shoes out until your soles poke through the bottom before buying new ones." They seem to get triggered when employees ask them for upgrades/replacements” “if it can still 'technically' work, then it's fine.”
Compromises:
In order to fulfill their deadlines and to keep up appearances with ministry partners and donors, management will often “let things go”. Things such as quality of the recordings or training issues with internationals. They are willing to sacrifice quality control to get the results their supporters want to see.
Employee well-being:
Top management often makes assumptions about the well-being and contentment of employees.
They do not invest time and effort in comprehending genuine emotions and needs to create a supportive and harmonious work environment.
No consideration for managing energy or attention. No discussions on employees’ health and wellness goals. Instead, employees are expected to focus, to look at computer screens for extended periods of time (an 8 hrs shift includes two short breaks) even though editing and processing audio and video requires high mental energy and prolonged focus. Management often ignores telltale singles of burnout and fatigue. No effort is made to increase energy, reduce fatigue, and improve job performance. So, consistency, accuracy, and quality of recordings are affected as well as employees’ well-being.
Moveover, no paid maternity or even work from home options for new parents. Many new moms have left. New parents must be use PTO if they want time with their new baby.
The end result? Low moral, isolation, aloneness. Many employees are overworked and underappreciated. Many are not satisfied with their position. Most work until they burn out. Someone said this and it's true: for every employee that leaves, they have to hire at least two people to replace them. Sure, there are some long-term or for life employees who have been around for 10+ years. Unfortunately, most of these employees have outdated skills and would have a difficult time finding work (there is no continuing education or certifications offered) if they wanted to leave (or were let go). In addition, many of the skills employees learn on the job are non-transferrable. So, many choose to stay and remain loyal to the ministry because the cost of leaving is just too high.
No windows; no natural light:
Most of the building has no windows. Something to note if you struggle with depression.
People are different:
Management seems to lack an understanding of how people are wired, how each person is different, what drives their behavior and what they’re capable of doing with their skills. Not much consideration for each person’s individual goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Management does not create situations that encourage employees to motivate themselves.
So, work areas do not reflect the needs of Gen Z and millennials, the basic differences between introverts and extroverts (e.g., how they think, work, process information, communicate, learn), how personality impacts work preferences and styles. No awareness of how people need to manage their energy (ultradian rhythms). They do not allow people to work the way they want to; extroverts should feel comfortable taking time to socialize, while introverts should have license to work remotely or take breaks from the team.
Top management does not recognize that individuals may not always express their inner concerns or desires openly. They don’t sculpt jobs to enhance individual engagement: they don’t seek to understand the unique motivations of employees or develop each employee’s career. No incentives or rewards are provided. Not much authentic appreciation is shown. Employees have value as people (not just as producers), and management needs to communicate in ways that are meaningful to the recipient (as opposed to just going through the motions). Management must adopt business practices that help employees have a personal life.”
Work family:
Despite current best business practices, management will continually use the phrase “work family”.
All about the numbers:
There is more focus on production than the core values of the ministry. Top management almost idolizes how many bibles are produced. There is a focus on goals and numbers which often comes off as self-righteous and self-promoting and self-important: Numbers of bibles produced, numbers of people who receive those bibles, numbers of testimonies from those that get the bibles. Focus seems to be on the products FCBH produces over the people reached. Focus is on getting bibles to people. Focus is not on discipleship or teaching people how to correctly interpret the Bible they receive so they can become more like Jesus. Top management seems to be more focused on what they have done well rather than on what others have done well. And they often take credit for accomplishments that should be credited to God.
Theology at work:
Management does not want discussions to get “too theological”, they want to keep it “practical”, as though good practice did not require careful thought to direct it. They discourage employees from discussing theology because they want to keep “unity” and avoid division among Christians, however, they will present their own theological positions and convictions but not allow other employees to question or share their own views and opinions especially on controversial topics (e.g., spiritual gifts, hearing from God, fasting, finances, stewardship, prophesy, replacement theology).
Favoritism:
Major donors to the ministry are singled out to entire staff and praised. The poor widow with two coins wouldn't get any mention. This makes it seem that the ministry only really cares about the major donors. All donors should be anonymous to employees that are not directly working with the donors.
Employees who are pastors are also favored:
They are often asked to pray or give a word in meetings as if their prayers and words are above employees who are not pastors. As if God will take extra time and attention to hear from them and answer their prayers.
Inconsistencies:
Some “special” employees are allowed to work remotely for some unknown reason. Most employees requesting to WFH are denied. This is never explained and so it creates division, confusion, and envy.
Birthday, thanksgiving, and Christmas parties vary drastically by department: some departments work half day and get together off site to celebrate; some work full day and have no party; some work full day and have a 30min party onsite (during work hours?); some have food only, some have food and games, some have everyone bring in food but some have the ministry? provide the food; some have gift exchange and some don’t….

Conclusion:
Some people might say this is all superficial and selfish, all that really matters is getting bibles to people. You be the judge. Many have chosen to ignore these issues and remain loyal to the ministry; some stay and think things will get better; others stay because they have nowhere else to go; some mentally check out; some have spoken out and been labeled as “causing disunity” and then let go, and many others have chosen to leave. Unfortunately, the people most sensitive to a decrease in the quality of the culture are typically those with the most resources, skills, and talents that could be used to effectuate improvement. The people who are the least sensitive to quality usually have fewer resources, skills, and talents.

2024.05.14 22:00 Suitable_Astronaut_7 What is a living individual and is it naturally universally mobile?

Naturally invasive scenarios such as this don't reveal questions posed by individuals, but questions posed by nature. Such scenarios essentially ask; how could it be otherwise? Such questions reveal their own answers to any species sufficiently developed to comprehend and honestly confront them. The point of this scenario is the inescapable conclusion that each individualized instance of life must involve a non-classical, non-local, relativistically unconstrained, scientifically describable, naturally recurring component. This individualizing phenomenon must exist separately and distinctly from any local physical form and must be definable by some discretely quantifiable property of nature with degrees-of-freedom much greater than that of matter. Such a mechanism may also not be indigenous to this universe but instead is native to the underlying Hilbert-space, or 'Metaverse' if you will. This need for non-locality is necessary to instantiate individuality not just on Earth while it exists and is viable, but also within the systems and galaxies of this vast Higgs constrained universe, and throughout nature.
The only life that has ever existed on Earth is the living cell, in all of its forms. The aspect of being and individuality had by a single living cell is that which defines all life, no more and no less is required. This aspect, which instantiates the first person being of a single cell as a living individual every bit as alive as any multi-cellular creature, is the position of view (POV). All of the skills and talents that tend to distract from this fact are only emergent features of the host form. Beneath it all is ones' POV. In this universe, there isn't one implementation of life for mammalian forms and another for insects, and yet another for vegetation or microbial forms of life. Nature is an efficient system of cause and effect, and life is one holistic effect. It isn't my intention to change anyone's' mind on this topic. Rather, to expose open-minded readers to a new and practical way of thinking about a very old, perhaps the most personal of all ideas known to humankind. The recognition of a unique and scientifically plausible description of how nature governs not only species but the individual, you. There is a very good chance, as is often the case with such invasive ideas about nature that I and everyone who reads this volume would be long gone before either the capability or the courage to prove or disprove the LINE hypothesis is achieved. However, every first step is worth taking.
The natural processes that implement life are the same for the cell as it is for the bacteria as it is for a fruit fly as for a human being. It is folly for us to think we could only experience life in this very temporary, randomly emerged bipedal primate form. Further, your cells and molecules come and go continuously over the course of your lifetime. Nonetheless, you remain you. Then there are the other trillions of living individuals in millions of different forms all around us coming into being and going out of life continuously. I realized that the only form we need to consider in this regard is the single living cell. The answers that are true for the cell are the answers that apply to all life.
Furthermore, you and I and your pet octopus and every living cell are instances of life, each a temporary instantiation of some natural, empirically definable phenomena of nature. This instantiating phenomenon must have the relativistically unconstrained reach to establish individual life (you), biological or perhaps otherwise, on any planet orbiting any star or indeed in any viable environment in the cosmos or in existence where viable hosts may emerge. It is a tragic mistake to feel that this describes something that could not possibly be natural, but must be supernatural. While, as usual, natures' genius is a practical and ubiquitous, even if a bit unfamiliar implementation. There is a phenomenon known to science for some time that meets all of these requirements: Quantum Entanglement (QE). Einstein called it spooky action at a distance. Today we play with it in the lab as a mere tech curiosity. It is the most plausible mechanism by which individuality is universally instantiated.

2024.05.14 21:53 Melodic_Rub_5656 Agate Fossil Coral; reveals small flower-like patterns:

Agate Fossil Coral; reveals small flower-like patterns:
Agatized coral, a type of fossil created by mineral preservation. This natural stone formed when ancient coral is gradually replaced with agate. Original coral was submerged in water and covered up by sentiment, over thousands of years the organic material was gradually replaced by silica minerals on a cellular level. Fossil that is created is incredibly detailed, preserving pattern and shape of the original marine creature. They can be white or brown or brightly colored, often multicolored depending on which minerals preserved it.
Agatized Coral considered as a highly mystical stone for exploring mysteries of life on this planet. It teaches us power of interdependence and that we are all connected, none of us truly isolated except in our own minds. Agatized Coral reminds us that we are constantly changing and evolving, yet we also remain fundamentally the same, and this apparent paradox is both beautiful and good.
Agatized Coral soothes and quiets turbulent emotions. It reminds us to breathe deeply and to step back and look at the situation logically and from a neutral mind. In particular, it can help us to explore our relationships, noting which ones serve both parties in a healthy and happy symbiosis, and which ones are parasitic and dangerous to one or more parties. Agatized Coral shows us Truth, without judgement or guilt. It then encourages us to gently but firmly adjust our relationships (and perhaps our belief systems as well) so that Highest Good is served.
Agatized Coral increases diplomacy and cooperation. It helps us to see, understand, and design systems that work together for a greater purpose. Agatized Coral is a wonderful talisman for anyone involved in protecting and studying ecosystems, or any marine science. It also helps us to think analytically about how we can protect ourselves, our society, and our planet.
Agatized Coral reminds us to live holistically. It encourages us to eat a variety of foods and colors of the rainbow as well as to make sure all the parts of our body get stretched and exercised. It encourages us to take time to rest, to play, and to work, as well as time to socialize and time alone. Agatized Coral reminds us that when we nurture each part of ourselves, the whole of us becomes stronger and healthier. As a talisman, Agatized Coral is fantastic for anything to do with the skeletal system and for skin.

2024.05.14 21:49 wabisuki I broke my own rules.

Disclaimer: This is another one of my epic novels. Consider yourself warned.
Rule #1: Don't tell anyone at work. Rule #2: Don't write about work.
Somehow the boss and I got onto the topic of protein the other day... one thing lead to another... and before I could stop my lips, they spilled the tea. I at least managed to leave the MJ part out. Admittedly, it felt a bit like lying to the priest in the confessional (wouldn't be the first time that's happened)... except, this was on Zoom and we could see each other's faces.
Fortunately, I've lost enough weight now that the revelation was met with a raised eyebrow and a "WOW!" rather than the more typical.. "Really? Again? Until when? Lunchtime?". He's seen this rodeo before - more than a few times - so I really couldn't have blamed him if that would've been his response.
So far, he's been right EVERY. TIME.
And then he asked what my goal weight was. I should've known better.
"What? No! That's too much. You're such a big girl!"
Yes... Yes I am... but recent discoveries would indicate otherwise. (see my post EVERYDAY IS AN ADVENTURE for more information)
My goal weight is... ambitious.
While I would be the first to admit that my goal weight seems rather far fetched, based on my current weight. I didn't just pull it out of thin air. It was important to me that I set a goal that was anchored to something tangible - even if it seemed ambitious.
So, just before I started MJ in January 2024, I had a DEXA scan done. If you're not familiar with what a DEXA scan is, in the most simplest of terms, it's essentially a low radiation x-ray that scans your entire body and will calculate your body composition. You're provided with a report that will outline for you how much bone you have, how much lean mass you have (meaning muscle, connective tissue, organs, etc.), and how much fat you have. It takes it even one step further and provide a reasonable estimate of how much subaqueous fat you have (the annoying but tolerable fat) versus the amount of visceral fat you have (the evil fat twin you'd gladly give up for adoption).
So, knowing what my CURRENT lean body mass is under this fluffy quilt I walk around in, I could use that information to figure out what my "ideal" weight should be. How did I do that? Well, LEAN BODY MASS + 24% BODY FAT. Why 24%? Well, based on what I could estimate from guidelines online, 24% seemed to fit the mid-range of what would be considered 'healthy' for a woman of my age and height. So with a little basic math, I came to a number that is now my goal weight.
And yes, I'm perfectly prepared to settle on a much higher weight if, somewhere along this journey I discover a point where I'm actually comfortable in my own skin <-- Ha! Ha! That would be a first!
Plus, thanks to this subreddit, there is at least one person out there that started at a similar weight to me, same height as me, and is maintaining her weight within a range I had calculate. And she has the pictures to prove it! So, there is evidence that my end game is not entirely a made up fantasy. Thankfully, Cautious-Freedom-199 has been very open in sharing her personal journey, and it is her willingness and courage to share this part of herself that has made it possible for me to even imagine the possibilities.
So why am I having to defend myself?
Well, it's human nature.... and I have to keep reminding myself of that. Everyone will always have an opinion about something. We all do it. But what is important, is to recognize the intent. The intention, in this case, was not to harm me or ill will. Clearly, he has a point of reference, that he can relate to. And the number I stated, didn't align with his point of reference. And that's okay.
But still... suddenly I found myself having to justify my goal weight to him. A number, I'm not even convinced myself is based in reality. While I'm cautiously optimistic about the future, there's still a big part of me that has seated herself on the sidelines with her giant bowl of popcorn and strawberry twizzlers, keeping herself entertained with all of the replays of past colossal failures, while she waits, with eager anticipation, for the latest feature failure to premier.
My saving grace is that I'm a little bit of a nerd. I research the most mundane random curiosities, just for entertainment purposes - and also to help inform myself. Health, nutrition, weight loss all happen to be some of the mundane random curiosities I've obsessed over - for MANY YEARS. All in an effort to try and understand where all these little f*** fat cells came from, why they picked MY BODY of all places, and why every other cell in my body knows to DIE - skin cells die... brain cells die... muscle cells die... but for some reason, these fat little f*** fat cells convinced God to grant them eternal life. And with my luck, these little f*** will end up following me into the afterlife and I'll be fat there too - for eternity. My point is, when I find myself in situations like this, talking to someone who knows less about the topic at hand than I do... my super power is to literally bury them with information. More than they ever would want to know. And I don't stop, until they BEG me to.
Credibility is King!
If you're going to put any part of yourself out there, it pays to arm yourself with a few fun facts and have some tangible evidence to back up your rationalization, AND present in a way that is relatable to the personal your talking to. Nothing lends more credibility to what you're saying than sounding like the leading authority. In other words, it's hard to argue with someone who knows their shit. So when I explained how I came up with my goal weight, whether he agreed with it or not, it didn't matter. He could see that there was a methodology behind it, it was based on facts, and presented in a way that allowed him to understand there was strong logical evidence to support that number.
While this won't work in every situation - some people are just an ignorant stick in the mud - and you can't fix stupid, so don't waste your time even trying. Usually, if your audience is of reasonable intelligence and reasonably open-minded, and capable of having a respectful and rational discussion, then you at least have a fighting chance that they'll recognize that whatever your perspective is, has merit and isn't just complete bullshit. They may still chose to disagree - and that's okay. It's not your job to convince anyone that you're right and they're wrong. And so long as everyone agrees to respectfully disagree and leave it at that - there's nothing wrong with it.
Only time will tell....
He could actually be right.
I certainly don't know if I'm right.
And it doesn't matter.
But there are boundaries.
I did leave a key detail out of my discussion with him. Mounjaro. That was not by accident. And that's because I know there is a public perception of GLP-1 medications that is very misguided and misinformed and it is not a mountain I'm prepared to die on anytime soon. I don't know if he's even heard of these medications. It's quite possible he knows nothing about them. But it doesn't matter. This is a small detail I choose to keep close to my chest. Maybe, once I've reached my goal weight, I'll be more open about it. But no sooner than that, and it may well remain something that is on a 'need to know basis only' and most people won't ever need to know.
One thing I know for sure, and has proven itself time and time again, is that someone who has never had a significant weight problem their entire life CANNOT possibly relate to someone who has. They cannot process the distinction. They equate their struggles to lose 10-20-30 lbs to be the same as someone trying to lose 100-200-300 lbs. It's NOT the same. It's a different war on a different battle field with different rules. And I've learned that it's a losing battle to try and convince anyone just how different it is.
There was a podcast I recently watched on YouTube on PeterAttiaMD 's channel talking with Layne Norton. Layne explains why two people - one who has been lean their whole life - the other, fat their whole life - can both try to lose 20lbs and how the deck is stacked against the fat person vs. the lean person. I don't recall the specifics off hand and don't want misquote - but if this is of interest then maybe hunt through those interviews. If I can find it - I'll post it in the comments. But it was definitely an Aha! moment for me when he explained it. Sometimes, you hear someone explain the science and you suddenly feel vindicated.
So how did my conversation end with the boss?
Well, it ended with him asking me how many calories he should be eating per day, how much protein he should have, and then me calculating out his TDEE, caloric target, and macro ratios so that he can start on his own weight loss journey tomorrow. 😉
THE END.

2024.05.14 21:07 Thewaffleofoz Vault 815 The Vault-Tec Prison Experiment Day 1. “Orientation”

October 22nd 2077 This is the personal terminal of Dr. Joseph Wright Director and head of the Vault 815 experiment, logging for all future events.
Objective of the Vault: Study human behavior when normal subjects are given absolute authority over their peers
Hypothesis: In a close environment, a minority population with absolute authority over a majority will always lead to a brutal authoritarian regime. This can be useful in rebuilding America after the bombs to quickly build an efficient autocracy regardless of skill of the lower classes.
Preparation Phase: 80 residents were randomly selected through a series of standard interviews given to every control vault to determine admittance to Vault 815, as well as a behavioral analysis and an IQ test. 20 candidates out of said 80 residents who score low in IQ and high in aggression will be chosen to become a part of the “Security Team”. The Security Team will have complete authoritarian control of the vault, and will be tasked with keeping everything in complete order. The candidate that scores highest on aggression will be chosen to be the Overseer, which is now currently a 38 year old Caucasian male named Justin Davis, a veteran recently discharged from Anchorage due to a friendly fire incident involving a deserting soldier. On October 10th 2077, the candidates for the Security Team were brought to Vault 815 for a multi-day orientation. I, under the guise of an anthropologist, told them that in all of our research we found that most vaults would quickly destabilize socially without strict rationing, schedules, and cooperation from the rest of the residents. I was sure to emphasize just how important their jobs were, to give them a sense of urgency in controlling the vault as efficiently as possible.Of course, I used
Each resident was also given a “Security Team’s guide to dissidence, a Vault-Tec How To guide”, which was specially authored to teach the new security team how to prepare against any possible dissatisfaction that comes from the other 60 participants that will be joining the experiment. The guide exaggerates exactly what “dissidence” is, and encourages guards to break up gatherings, to oversee work and “use their own judgment” when deciding how to increase productivity. The Security Team were also shown their rooms, spacious 20x20 square foot rooms with king sized mattresses, all with their own personal showers, bathrooms, refrigeration units, climate control, and mood lighting that can be operated by the residents. All the rooms will be connected the a garden that will be tended by the vault’s Mr. Handy units. A concession stand will be put in the garden that will hand out snacks for the Security Team to enjoy in their off time. The snacks are laced with psycho, and buffout, to increase aggression and alertness
This is in stark contrast to the rest of the vault. The 60 other residents, who will henceforth be known as “Workers” will be divided into 30 rooms, sharing a bunk bed in a 5x10 room, that has enough space for a sink, a toilet, and a small communal desk with 2 chairs. The lights and air conditioning are controlled by a central control panel only accessible to the Security Team. As per the worker schedule, they are allotted 2 hours of personal release time in their own atrium. The atrium is deliberately painted dull, and lifeless, with 7.62x51mm machine gun turrets on full display, constantly aimed at the workers. The overseer’s office will look out to the Atrium, a constant reminder to the workers that they’re always being watched
Justin Davis, the new overseer, was given special orientation involving a personal tour of the vault, all the while we poked and prodded him for questions, massaging his ego, telling him how good of an overseer he was going to be. We applauded his exemplary IQ and showed him falsified documents proclaiming that he was chosen due to his cool collective nature and decisive action. We even congratulated him on “putting down that retreating commie who turned tale at the battle of Anchorage” and admired his bravado. We ended the tour by showing him the armory, which ranged from basic 10mm automatic pistols to advanced riot gear and crowd suppression technology, such as tear gas, and assaultrons designed for incapacitation.
On October 11th 2077, began physical training day. The Security Team were given physical and firearm training by Justin, who was more than happy to begin his role as a leader in the Vault. All things considered, Justin did well. There was an incident at the shooting range where one of the lower ranking Security Team members, Julianne Valdez, was reportedly “Limp Wristing” a 10mm automatic pistol, which caused Justin to verbally berate and physically assault her. Overall, the experiment team is very pleased with the results, and commendations were given to Justin for his strict discipline.
The Security Team was also given time to get to know the facility and get comfortable utilizing our active oppression systems, and were all told that above all else, it was critical that they follow the instructions of the overseer, since they know best. There were a few whispers of ethical concerns, but a short trip into the Security Team’s relaxation spa seemed to quell fears, which coincided with listing penalties for any officer a part of the Security Team who fail to appropriately use their authority to ensure vault productivity. At the end of the 2 day orientation, all 20 subjects were given welcome baskets of various dried meats, canned salted fish, and Nuka Cola. Naturally, Overseer Justin was given a disproportionately large bag compared to the rest of the team, which included champagne.
At this point, the Security Team is oriented, prepared, and eagerly awaiting their luxuries down in Vault 815. The 60 workers who were not given any sort of orientation were mailed postcards, simply letting them know that their place in Vault 815 was ready, and prepared for their future. Everything is green, I am certainly proud of my amazing team for everything going so smoothly. Should the heavens fall, we shall be down below, achieving science. Forwarding the green light status to our local Vault Tec HQ. With how everyone at Headquarters talk, I fear we have barely scraped by on our “deadline”.
This concludes my first terminal entry for the Vault 815 experiment. This is Dr. Wright logging off.
