2024.05.14 07:47 Sensitive-Fig4714 I feel shame and regret dating a chauvinistic White guy who I initially suspected of having an Asian fetish, but I completely ignored my intuition...

He pursued me. I acquiesced, because in all honesty I was lonely and struggling to make meaningful connections in a new city. I was in a pretty bad place mentally, but it felt good to receive attention. We also met at a film screening, so there was some common ground and a shared appreciation for film and media.
Months in, I find out...
He has a keen, particular interest in Asian film and media - particularly East Asia - Japanese, Korean, and Chinese films.
He follows Asian cooking channels (by white expats / travelers only) and tries to connect with me through his "knowledge" of Asian food and primarily only cooks Asian food. He'd also try to "bait" me by asking me to come over and that he has prepared familiar, cultural dishes that I grew up on. I thought this was innocent at first, until he would control and lecture me on how to properly prepare the food when we'd try to cook together.
He asked me to shave so I look more "smooth" and to fit his pornified, aesthetic preference. I was uncomfortable at first and bewildered by this request so early on, but I did it anyway because of shit boundaries.
He tries so hard to connect with me to "my culture" through superficial things like media and food, but when I engage with him in deeper sociopolitical issues concerning our community, seeking a more emotional response, he falls silent, weak, and invalidates my experiences as "doom scrolling." This is the most aggravating crux of some White men who have this "Asian preference" - it's the consumption of my body and culture, but ignorance of my humanity. The last part - willful ignorance - is what makes this problematic and painful for us. Yes, not all white guys, but some.
He is not the most politically informed, well-read, yet holds highly opinionated beliefs of certain Asian countries from what has been espoused by Eurocentric media. You enjoy my "culture" and "beauty," but still deem my country of ancestry as inferior, whether consciously or not.
He has an obsession over a new ultra-girly K-Pop band that consists mostly of underage girls - musical choice that is not deemed socially appropriate for his age. I completely got the ick.
He has a Chinese calligraphy tattoo on his ankle that he supposedly regrets and wants removed, but I saw him shamelessly wearing ankle socks and cargo shorts in the summer and he has had this tattoo for almost two decades now. Absolute ick.
He jokingly (but not really) called me, "arm candy" and was pretty fixated on my looks.
He likely has a history of dating and pursuing Asian women and/or non-white women in general.
After all this coming into realization, I just felt too uncomfortable and dissonant to continue. I'll never know the 100% truth, but I eventually listened to my intuition.
My shame and regret comes from staying for too long and not listening to my own values, boundaries, and feelings. I'm sure there were elements of genuine like and attraction toward me, but it doesn't discount this feeling I couldn't shake that I was pursued initially because of my "Asianness" ("East Asianness," probably his fetish of choice, ignoring the massive, diverse region that is Asia-Pacific) and projected a lot of his East Asian interests, obsessions toward me and objectifying me as his young, "arm candy" Asian girlfriend, without the responsibility or baggage that comes with interracial dating in a racist society.
Dating is hard, especially for us, and what this experience taught me is to ruthlessly cultivate self-love, healthy mental well-being, more disciplined boundaries, higher standards of dating, more initial vetting and questioning, listening to my damn intuition, and just deeply knowing yourself and holding yourself with pride and self-respect to be more than just some White male chauvinistic fantasy projection.

2024.05.12 17:21 MartinGcz Need help with a sentence for a tattoo

Hi! Basically i'm terrible at calligraphy and i would love to have a tattoo written in Elian, but no matter how i try, i'm just not happy with the look of the text. Maybe i'm too critical of myself with this, But could i ask some of you talented people to help me with this?
I would love to have one of my favourite quotes: “And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.”
If you could put this on a paper and send it here, i would appreciate it a lot!

Did my TGCF Hua Lian Tattoo
The silver butterflies (Hua Cheng) were from the official manhua artbook. The peonies is to represent Xie Lian. I read it somewhere on the Chinese internet that the peony flower can be used to represent Xie Lian.
I specifically searched for a tattoo artist who specialised in the Chinese watercolour calligraphy art style for this. The results are amazing ❤️

2024.04.30 13:17 subtleAssiduity Tattoo recs?

Does anyone know any tattoo artists in the area who specialize or have a lot of experience with calligraphy style tattoos? They don't have to work in Corning, but within an hour or two would be ideal. Hoping to find someone who does good work and can prove it 😁 A sense of humor is also important. The tattoo idea is silly.

2024.04.26 20:33 JailNun Cyrillic calligraphy

I would like to get a tattoo of the word "Мы", written in a beautiful script. My efforts to find examples online haven't really turned up anything that I could easily take to a tattoo artist. And I also looked for Russian tattoo artists in my area, but the only one I found doesn't do any script designs. :/
Anyway, I thought maybe the Reddit community could direct me to Cyrillic calligraphy artists or galleries or something that I could take to local artist to do.
Спасибо!

2024.04.21 20:04 fmintar1 TIFU by telling my friend to writhe in agony

A week ago, there was a sakura festival that happened in my city, so me & a group of friends decided to visit the event. After walking around as a group, we decided to go do our own thing, then rendezvous to a certain place before heading back. I went to my own adventure to an area where they did culinary, tea ceremony, and arts & crafts. I'm always interested in calligraphy, so seeing a different arts & crafts happening, including bouquet making, fascinates me.

After walking around trying to see what's going on in each corner, I stumbled upon a booth where they draw free calligraphy for the guests in the form of a bookmark. The bookmark can contain a name, an idiom, or a combination of both. Since I don't know Kanji, I looked into the catalog of idioms they have to offer, and I picked one that says 七転罵倒, which has the meaning of "never give up". It says something along the line of "no matter how much you fall, keep trying, again and again, until you succeed." I think that was beautiful, so I chose the idiom, and the guy drew it for me. From the looks of it, I don't think the guy knew the actual meaning either, just have a really good artistic skill. Nevertheless, it looks great, I decorated it, and brought it home.

Yesterday it was one of my friend's birthday and while I was buying his gift, I remembered that he is a bookworm. After I prepared his actual gift, I also put the bookmark I got from last week's event to give to him as well. When I gave it to him, he loved it, especially the fact that the bookmark was homemade (well, kind of). We celebrated, partied, and we all went home, until this morning when he asked me about the bookmark.

I told him the story, that I got it from an event, thinking it looks cool, has a strong meaning, and that he could use it for his books. Then he proceed to ask me if I knew what it means, in which I replied "to never give up" or something like that. He laughed a bit, which makes me think that something is definitely suspicious. Finally, he sent me the picture, told me to do a little research on it, and to call him back once I discovered something. My curiosity is through the roof, so I proceed to research mode.

So here's my discovery. The Kanji for the idioms of "never give up" is 七転八起, which pronounced SHICHITEN-HAKKI. The bookmark I gave my friend is 七転八倒, which pronounced SHICHITEN-BATTOU, which is "writhing in agony" or "unbearable suffering" or "utter chaos". The literal meaning for the first 3 Kanji characters 七転八 is "7 falls, 8..." followed by either 起 which means "rise" or 倒 means "to fall or break down". So, instead of giving my friend a motivation to never give up, I gave him a cursed bookmark that literally says to continue falling until he breaks down!

I called him again and immediately, my first sentence is a straight up apologize. However, the moment I apologized, he just went bursting with laughter. Probably a good solid 30 seconds before he composed himself and started talking about the bookmark again. We decided to do something similar to tattoo in One Piece where the character is crossed out and rewrite the new Kanji underneath it and it's all good, instead of throwing it away. He said that from time to time, he will call me BATTOU to remind me of this incident. I guess I deserved it...

Now it got me thinking, who else got the cursed idioms besides me in that event...

TL;DR: I gave my friend a Japanese idiom bookmark without doing proper research on it first. My friend later discovered that the meaning is not what I thought it meant.

Regarding Polynesian Tatoos....
Im a 'tatoo' virgin. Really really want to get one. I have done extensive research and happened to fall in love with polynesian designs. Majority of sites I researched informed me that it is not offensive as long as you know the meaning of the tatoo and dont get the sacred ones meant for polynesian's- eg Malu. I DO NOT want to offend anyone. There is a design I like and have posted and would not mind any assistance in understanding the meaning and if it will be acceptable or not. Comments regarding the appropriateness of the tattoo in the first place are also welcome. My primary reasons for getting it like i said , the designs draw me and they have a deeper meaning (not sure of the one i like in particular) thanks.

2024.04.20 07:49 IndicationDense3782 Respectful, diverse world building as a white person?

Hello,
I am new here and I am building my own campaign setting and I struggle with a question how to make a world diverse and feel that way, while not appropriating other cultures or being disrespectul or even unintentinaly racist. I want to show a diverse world, with different cultures, indenteties, ways of living and so on, while making sure not to appropriate other cultures.
Short background I am white, from Germany and I did some research, but I am not by any means an expert for other cultures or have enough POC around me to give me a good idea if my idead are respectful or not. Therefor I try to get an idea here.
Short description of my idea for the world and what my problem is: The World I have in mind is mostly destroyed by a magical war and the only safe places are the four cities protected by gods. All of those cities are set in very different locations, with very different politics and ways of life. To show that I would like for them all to have different cultures and the names should differ in sound as well. For example one of the cities in located in a petrified skeleton of a sea Monster, that tried to swallow an island. Which I called "Motu Manu". The most common letters in the language are "M, u and t." Which I hope gives it a unique sound, without copying words that excist. The people there live from the ocean, are very pragmatic and use all ressources they can find to survive in this very dangerous enviroment. They have matriachrs as there leaders and most dnd races that live there can swim, breath or at least hold their breath. The sense of community is very strong and if a child loses their parents, the closests friends will adopt them. The ships are animated Objects and since the ocean is extremly dangerous, the crew are mostly skeletons, that have been found on the shore line. The focus is on life and the soul, while the body is just a husk, that can be used after the soul has moved on and using the animated bodys or objects, the dangerous parts like fishing or defending further away can be done with material costs, but not lifes lost. In my head when I think about the setting, polynesian culture comes to my mind and I try not to take to much influence from it...I avoided things like tattoos that could be seen as a knock of from the Moko, I did avoid things like the Haka or the greetings shown in pop culture, but I am still worried that my own bias might make.
Another setting is in the mountains and the city is build within the mountain. Since not much can be grown it has become a rather strict society, with many hunters and where the council is not voted but created through trials and the winners become part of the council. This country is called: "Sazma" (here the sharp sounds of the S, z and t) dominate the language.
And so on, could somebody give me feedback if they see things that are inappropriate representation?

I did this abdomimation at 16yo. Is there a way to 'fix' it?
So... as the title says i did this abdomimation over 2 years ago. I used a calligraphy ink and a razor blade. Did some, poured some ink into it.. and here we are. Im doinf better now. It initally looked a lot better than it does now. Ink has not stayed in some places and lately is getting a slight green/blueish tint and ofc the linework (if it even can be called that lmao) is all fucked up. But i still like the overall look of it and would like to get it fixed. By that i mean, maybe let some profesional draw over it the same shape again and hoping that it would cover all the imperfection and the fix the proportions (on image 4 is basically what i have in mind). But i have no idea if its even possible and maybe it would be better to just remove it with laser and do the tattoo again from scratch - i have no idea. Thats why im asking here. I dont want to fuck this even more than it already is. I would appreciate any advice and personal opinions. Thanks

Does wearing bracelets over dainty wrist tattoo cause fading or blowout??
I just got my first tattoo 2 weeks ago!
The artist I went to specializes in fine line calligraphy work. She told me that I shouldn’t wear my gold bracelets and to especially avoid wearing a watch on this wrist. According to her, these would affect the tattoo in the long run.
I am somebody who’s obsessed with gold and would never let go of my gold bracelet stack 😂. I specifically got this design on my side wrist because I wanted a tattoo under my jewelry. That was the vibe I was going for. She told me that if I really want to wear my bracelets to at least wait a month.
Does wearing jewelry over tattoos really affect it? And if so, how?? Since the tattoo sits in the dermis layer of the skin I’m a bit confused as to how that would have any impact on the tattoo.
Any input would be appreciated!!! 😊🙏🏼
