2024.05.14 16:38 Ok_Cause_869 Am I crazy for thinking Diamox is unnecessary?

I barely have any symptoms. NO said my visual field was “fantastic” but that I have some “thinning” of my optic nerve. I was originally diagnosed at age 13, treated with Diamox and told to lose weight and eventually it was considered resolved. I’m 27 now, got rediagnosed when I got my own health care and my optometrist noticed swelling. My only symptom is pretty much the whooshing noise and it really only happens every now and then. Sure, I get headaches and migraines, but I’ve had them since I was literally 8 years old.
I got put on Diamox again to “prevent vision loss”and the side effects have been so bad. Pins and needles feeling in my feet and hands and face. Then I started feeling exhausted and short of breath. They did blood work and I have low CO2 and slightly elevated chloride. Now the doctor wants me to take potassium bicarbonate too and see if that helps.
I’m so frustrated. I’ve only been on it for less than a week. I’m so tired I can’t focus at work or even like, read a book or play video games. My feet get numb at least once an hour. And how am I supposed to lose weight if I can’t exercise because I can’t breathe doing regular activity???
I guess this is kind of just a vent post. I don’t remember having crazy side effects as a kid but now I’m having more side effects than I even have IIH symptoms. Wtf.

2024.05.14 15:02 2299165976 Do private trackers allow wireless internet connections?

Thus far I've only used optical fiber or cable broadband, both providing consistently at least 95% of the plan's highest (theoretical) speed. I've never been under a data cap, not widely used in the EU to my knowledge.
I've been seeding tens of thousands torrents for years on my home computer, survived on every tracker RED included without actively monitoring my ratio. Absolutely no "racing" or downloading freeleech torrents solely to gain ratio.
I'll be moving to a (single-family) house which has no residential internet as a tenant , leaving cellular networks as the only option. I may be allowed to request optical fiber installation (I've verified the cost — around 1000€ — and availability), but that's not an option for a while... for months, at least.
Since my total torrent size (the seeding data) exceeds 50 TB renting a seedbox is an non-feasible option.
No major tracker at least I know of allows any mobile torrent clients (note that also battery life and device performance may be a concern), albeit installing a desktop client in Termux may suffice.
EDIT: I'm not planning to seed using any portable device, I was only attempting compare with mobile-only tracker use.

2024.05.14 08:34 redreycat Collection of QR codes for optical inserts

I'm a not US based soon-to-be owner of a Vision Pro. I'll need the optical inserts and I've already ordered them from HonsVR (I'm aware there are other options, such as VR-Rock).
The main issue with this third party inserts is that they don't provide a QR code.
So, I was thinking... is there any wiki-style page where people could upload their QR codes with the appropiate infomation? That way third party buyers could, in theory, go there, look for their graduation and use the QR code.
I don't know if this is a pipe dream, but I think it'd be awesome.

2024.05.13 17:35 Theslowestmarathoner I’m pregnant- What questions to ask neurology?

I was diagnosed last year during IVF treatment after a 5 week long migraine landed me in the hospital twice with stroke symptoms. I randomly scheduled an optometry appointment and they caught the inflamed optic nerves.
I’m now pregnant on my own and I have an appointment with neuro to discuss. I never started diamox because the neuro felt my IIH was early enough that I could choose to forgo treatment in lieu of pursuing pregnancy. Which I did. My optic nerves took about six months to heal but now look ok according to ophthalmology and everything is stable.
Any questions I should be asking neuro??

2024.05.13 16:21 Even_Studio_1613 Warning-Condition Common with PCOS

Hi my fellow women with PCOS, Thanks so much for sharing here. This subreddit has been such a blessing to me and has helped me feel less alone. I wanted to warn all of you about IIH- Idiopathic Intercranial Hypertension. For the past few months I've been complaining to my Primary Care Doctor about changes in my vision and frequent headaches. This whole time he's written off the changes in my vision as migraine auras. What's bothered me is the changes in vision are constant. I've had blurry vision and extra blurry peripheral vision 24/7. My brother convinced me to go to the ER a couple of weeks ago when my vision and headaches got worse. One of the doctors there mentioned that my symptoms correspond with IIH which is common among us child bearing women with PCOS. Apparently, they both share a common phenotype. After having a spinal tap done and seeing an ophthalmologist, the ophthalmologist confirmed that my eyes are swollen and I have IIH unless they find a brain tumor when they do an MRI, in the near future. The possibility of me having a brain tumor is so unlikely they're probably just going to start me on meds for IIH in the next couple of days. If I wasn't diagnosed right away I could have had optic nerve damage and/or total blindness. Other symptoms I had which I didn't realize were caused by IIH included neck stiffness and increased depression and forgetfulness. I wanted to warn you all in case you ever experience similar symptoms.

In 1986 an Italian professor working for the University of Pavia in Italy would have a face to face encounter with an unknown entity. But unlike so many other encounters, this professor was able to take 5 photos.
To begin with, I will state that this post was months in the making (mostly waiting and chasing false leads) and carries with it perhaps some answers, plenty of questions, and perhaps for some, a similarity to their own experiences. Special thanks to u/Neo-Rex as well as u/ebycon for their assistance in helping me find and rule out some areas of research.
Disclaimer: The following images and text are provided without photo manipulation on my end (besides simple cropping and scanning). There are going to be many references in this post to Italian media, magazines, as well as individual writers. This is by no means an endorsement, advertisement, or other form of ARG intended to sell, market, or persuade anyone to buy, rent, or procure any of the described materials. Because I know this is a new area of topic, and because the images provided are of an unusual nature, I will provide various sources to prove that these images are not enhanced, manipulated by hand or by a contemporary photo manipulation program or AI generation.
Before we get into the nitty gritty of the images I will provide background as to how I came upon these images, and the flow of information.
I was first made aware of these images after researching separate alien encounters for a post of mine (see that post here for further details regarding that) one of the sources used was "alieni in italia 1945-1995 50 anni di incontri ravvicinati". On page VIII towards the back of the book these images (or rather image as three were compressed into one section) as well as the following text appears
https://preview.redd.it/zz1ti49qm60d1.jpg?width=806&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e53f7b8ec62fb68abc04a29caa117d2f21c13325
"Vero alieno o scoop giornalistico?
Translated: "Real alien or journalistic scoop? I have avoided including in the present catalog this singular case. These are in fact some photos(5) taken by an unidentified "university professor from Pavia" in the summer of 1986 and published by seven. The weekly newspaper Corriere della Sera. They refer to an alleged alien entity that allegedly manifested itself to the professor in a completely random situation. There was no shortage of unfavorable opinions expressed by several ufologists. ( Photo taken from: Seven No. 9/10 seven days illustrated by Corriere della Sera, March 5, 1988.
That was all the information provided within. (it should be noted that although this description mentions 5 photos, there are only these 3 provided within Moreno Tambellinis book.) These images captured my attention fairly quickly as I am fairly familiar with purported alien/supernatural photographs, so to find one I have never seen, and in such a quality which is general not present within other such photos as these, was more than enough to tip my curiosity in the direction of delving deeper.
First attempt at finding further information regarding these photos, and this particular magazine issue ended in little success, though I was able to find what I, at the time, believed to be a correctly colorized image of this entity. See below.
https://preview.redd.it/xpyz6eeum60d1.png?width=341&format=png&auto=webp&s=292a9a3afe55c7e83d0f6d5ccce43aa5f35d9fec
Unassuming on some random blog that attributed a name to this entity while providing no further information regarding the image itself (as certain ufological circles are want to do). Not finding further information I attempted to find further information based off of this colorized image, but to no avail. Save for one source that used this image ( in a different colorized manner, slightly less yellow and oozing with potential, that being this image by Argentinian Ufologist Dante Franch. See below.
https://preview.redd.it/tl0dx4lym60d1.png?width=280&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca523a7f18df130f09c9174e925d044a89852690
Finally, someone who might have a lead on this information! But no, once again this image is deceptively alluring as the contents of this book have absolutely nothing to do with the Sette report, but simply use its image to describe unsourced and unverified tales of the City of Erks (a wild dive on its own and may be deserving of its own post) and other entities that supposedly have a resemblance to this cover image.
Upon further searches I came across this archived link with additional images some with closer to truth color, including the aforementioned first colorized image here https://web.archive.org/web/20080312200229/https://www.anomalia.org/perspectivas/fotosets/campo_cielo.htm as well as the additional references. The author of this blog post is Mexican Ufologist Luis Ruiz Noguez, notable for his skepticism and thorough investigation relating to this material, so it was a no-brainier to look into his research regarding this seeing as he had previously mentioned it here on his blogpost. So where better to look than his book "Extraterrestres ante las camaras" Volume X dealing specifically with italian encounters and purported alien photographs. But again, despite his previous notation in this blog, the contents of these images specifically are nowhere to be seen or mentioned within this book.
Research stagnated for some time during the search process for the original source cited in Moreno Tambellinis book. I was able after five months (you have no idea how hard it was to find a copy) able to acquire a copy of this magazine and finally was able to determine that the previously assumed white coverall of this entities outfit has been a false notion.
The following text is a translation of the pages within this issue of march 7th 1988 Sette: Corriere della Cera . 9/10, the original scans, as well as a translated text document of these pages can be found in the sources listed below. Important note: although these images are primary focus of this article, it does meander into thoughts on Whitley Striebers book "Communion" (which will be a source of contention that will be covered later in this post). But the translated post here is the relevant text to these images.
"Just as we were editing a report on the UFO phenomenon that was supposed to appear on 7 at the same time as the television passage of Spielberg's film Close Encounters of the third kind, we came across a resounding surprise: the images published in these pages and on the cover of this issue. They were taken completely by chance, one summer evening in 1986, by a professor at the University of Pavia, above all suspicion and known for his balance, his intelligence and rationality, completely alien to the somewhat emphatic and vaguely bizarre world of the so-called "contactees": those people who say they have entered into a relationship with unknown entities from the cosmos."
"He is a completely normal person who has always been skeptical of the reports of unidentified flying objects and is now also a testimony, erroneous to the idea that his name is related to the disturbing figure captured by his camera. The university lecturer has agreed to give us what he considers to be evidence of his shocking experience in exchange for absolute confidentiality"
"What to make of these images? We can make a few assumptions.
A) The author of the photos is a mystrifier. It is unlikely: too much resistance has opposed the publication of his document (which he has yielded for free to 7). In addition, he wishes to remain anonymous. A behavior that is certainly not that of those who want to speculate on a scooop, true or presumed.
B) The author is the victim of a game. Someone made him take "fireflies for lanterns". A well-thought-out game, by true professionals. It is not unlikely, even if the professor is not a "contactee", one obsessed with extraterrestrials, that is, a man who could arouse "temptations" among those who know him.
C) The photos really document something alien. A mysterious otherness has been captured by the professor's camera, who was the first to be surprised by this tangible presence, imprinted on the film that is absolutely different from a hallucination. What to say? What are we to think of images that forcefully re-propose the problem (or the dream, or the myth, or the nightmare) of the existence of other beings, of other civilizations that populate galaxies or dimensions unknown to us? Science continues to question these facts, but an answer is still a long way off. All experiences at the "edge of reality" are embarrassing. The line that divides science and mystery is still vague. Prudence, in these cases, is a must. And the desire not to appear is widespread among the witnesses. The professor from Pavia, who chose restriction, has an illustrious precedent."
"These images, taken on a summer evening in 1986 by a professor at the University of Pavia, who asked to remain anonymous, are the subject of various hypotheses of interpretation in the text of the article. The reader is free to draw his own conclusions."
Here are the direct scans of this entity as they appear in the magazine, scanned directly out of a physical copy of this magazine. (do note although these images are uploaded in different order I believe they may be sorted as such, I make no claim to the accuracy of this in terms of chronological order, but which is most aesthetically appeasing.)
https://preview.redd.it/mk91ugp3n60d1.png?width=520&format=png&auto=webp&s=8218b2c6c3b0a508ef086c37c2d0e07552f73910

Now, while the article was very keen to post certain aspects of this, it was rather lacking, and it must be stated although the title of this issue, as well as the description in the article infer this is related to UFO's. There is no mention of an actual UFO or craft present within this encounter, or at the very least, this information was omitted from the article, and was potentially removed at the request of the professor in question, though that is speculation on my part.
The following sections will deal with the author of this previous issue, as well as the two follow-up articles and their individual authors.
There is more information present as the above text states, not from the previous issue, but from two separate follow-up articles that were saved and printed in the Italian Ufo magazine "UFO express no. 043." Link to the full untranslated issue here/UFO%20Express%20-%20No%20043.pdf). These separate addendums fully cover the images in question and are critical but not overly-so. The most important aspect to this is that the professor provided further information to Sette, primarily about what they were doing prior to this entities appearance, but also their means of photographic capture.
{Page 1}
UFO: Is this being from another world? read the scroll on the cover of 7 (No. 9/10) that we republish on this page. Hundreds of phone calls and letters arrived at the editorial office, and they continue to arrive after Mino Damato in his TV program Alla ricerca dell'arca (Sunday, March 27, Rai 3 8:30 p.m.) dealt with the same images, depicting a hypothetical alien photographed by a professor at the University of Pavia one summer evening in 1986.
There are those who believe in this hypothetical alien and those who do not, but all of the readers who have phoned or written are bound to each other by the rejection of that question mark printed on the cover: each of them is persuaded to erase the hypothesis, to tear away the veil of the enigma. And they split into two equally intolerant parties, leaving no room for doubt. We have chosen two exemplary letters. The first letter comes from Brixen and is signed by Mr. Nicola De Paola (2 Clesia Street). He says “the alien is a tobogganist: typical are the tight suit the aerodynamic helmet, the face crushed by the transparent visor, the blurred colors and contours of the photos are due to the fact that they were taken from television, with the obj vo blurred or too close up and strange an alien with limbs, head, face and body identical to those of man; I too will be able to take photographs quite similar to those published; as a reader I feel mocked.”
Others have certainly seen in the hypothetical alien: a surgeon, a nurse, an ice skater, an Icelandic firefighter, a Norwegian cryologist (sic), a KGB spy, a hockey player with his head bandaged; in short, some man in overalls or uniforms. No one has identified in the figures, despite the width of the pelvis, a woman or an androgynous. The second letter comes from Ferrara and is signed by Mr. Giovanni Mantovani (via Luigi Borsari 51). Says; When I saw the photographs I immediately thought: but look, it looks like the E.T. seen by R.M on September 2, 1987 while he was fishing on the bank of the Canal Bianco (RO). He felt an intense tingling, turned around and saw a strange individual: dark complexion, 2 meters tall, hair that looked like plastic, wearing a luminescent blue jumpsuit. The apparition lasted a few seconds.R.M. felt a chill, a feeling that was renewed at the sight of your photos... Only one remark can be made to the professor of Pavia: that of not having given the readers further clarifications about the close approach of the third type...
Here are the further clarifications that the professor from Pavia has allowed us to give, although he is consumed by the fear of being uncovered and covered with ridicule. The photos were taken by a Nikon camera, with motor-drive, 55 mm lens. Micro, 3.5 aperture, shutter speed: 1/4 second Polachrome film, 40 Asa sensitivity. Shortly after the sun went down, the professor was completing some experiments on the optical perception of dogs (how does a dog see things in the world? Black and white? With what depth, in what perspective?). That alone is almost ridiculous. We were missing the hypothetical alien. A dog joke? Maybe. But the professor never solved the riddle. And dogs don't talk. ~ Paolo Pietroni
{page caption}
The hypothetical alien out of 7 has caused conflicting reactions. The photo was taken from a Nikon by a university lecturer while carrying out experiments on the visual perception of dogs

{Page 2}
Your E.T. seems to me to be a feminine being...
Dear editor, I am writing to you in relation to the series of 5 photographs taken by a better identified professor of Pavia one summer evening in 1986 and which appeared in the supplement of the Corriere della Sera n. 9/10 Since I am not familiar with photographic technique, I have written down the shooting parameters communicated by you personally during Mino D'Amato's television program In Search of the Ark on March 27.
Correct me if I'm wrong: Nikon camera body with motor, 5.5 mm focal length lens, aperture dia 3.5, exposure time 1/15 of a second. Certainly, with this adjustment, every little movement of the camera or of the photographed subject causes a blurred or rather blurred photograph. Probably, this whole story of the photos arose from the need of the Rizzoli Group to launch on the market the Italian version of the best American seller Communion by Ted Jacob, which deals, coincidentally, with the subject of extraterrestrials. This colossal business is also sponsored by the production of the film, which has been "posted" while waiting for the possible buyers of such a profitable product to be sufficiently sensitized...
Having said this, I wish, through his kindness, to convey to the professor of Pavia my modest comments on his photos. Feminism aside, I confess that the first spontaneous observation I made on these photographs was to recognize without a shadow of a doubt a woman, or rather a female being; The conformation of the hips, the breasts, combined with the grace of the bowed pose with folded arms, unequivocally belonged to a woman. But let's get to the details.
The suit - It appears so tight that it shows every little part of the body so as to give the impression of a "second skin"; It has light blue-green bands (as shown in the photo on the right on page 74) that are more evident around the neck, on the shoulders and on the arms.
The hands - They appear covered by the sleeves and more elongated than ours (cover figure), dare I say w(bed.
The head - Although it is more mobile, it clearly shows these elements: oval face with a slightly flattened nose, microphone with a light-colored support arm placed at the height of the left ear (photo on the right, page 74)
The headset - It is completely different from any type currently built because it contains a transceiver module at the top for contact with some support organ (e.g. an operations center, or a cosmoplane, or another operator), similar to what happens in Italy when astronauts go out of their vehicle and maintain constant radio contact with the control center.
The transceiver part can be seen both in the cover photo and on page 74, left and right, and is indicated by the protuberance on the top of the skull.
This study was born well out of any venal or other interest, in fact I am not a ufologist, but a pilot in full flight activity and with command responsibilities; I have been a first-hand witness to the phenomenon commonly associated with the improper name of UFO
Sure of the need to deal with the subject with more compatible methodologies than those promulgated by scientists and ufologists, I dedicate myself to the enhancement of aeronautical contactism, intending with this new term to redefine the sightings of military and civil pilots, aeronautical technicians, engineers, etc. who through direct experience with the phenomenon have acquired the conviction that we are not alone Only those who have had a direct impact with the phenomenon (the contactee) can provide a plausible image of themselves... everything else... They are only lucubrations born from mindsets that are not up-to-date with the present sotric moment on the one hand, and with the characteristics of the phenomenon on the other.

I forwarded his observations to the professor in Pavia, author of the photos depicting the hypothetical alien. Thank you for your interesting analysis. You are free to believe it or not, but the Rizzoli Communion book had an absolutely random presence in our service: we liked the design of the cover; the portrait of that E.T. and we thought of enriching the illustrations of the service.
Roberto Doz (a fairly interesting individual on his own, air force colonel with his own UFO sighting) read more on that here
As for the author of the original article. Their name is Nullo Cantaroni, and may be more well known by his wife Bice Cairati( Sveva Casati Modigiani), Nullo Cantaroni had a fairly successful journalistic career, dealing primarily in medicine as co-authorized by fellow science journalist Severina Cantaroni. He eventually succumbed to Parkinson's disease. I make mention of these authors, Roberto Doz (who has a very good reason to be interested in the topic as he had his own experience). As well as the other two as these are not the ramblings of some crazy pumping out their own versions of weekly world news, but were and still are highly credible and respected peoples, whom by their own association are taking the flak for posting this material to begin with.
From here on out, this is going to be a further dive into the already presented material, some comparisons with other cases which have direct correlation with these images, as well as other information during my research that has not been touched on up until this point.
In the first follow-up article there is mention of a show "Alla Ricera dell'arca (In search of the ARK)". With he show discussing the images posted here. I was able to confirm that this episode does exist, with the covered material, and is within the RAI archives (Italian TV network/station). However, they would not lend the episode out to a non-Italian citizen, or someone associated with a University, or media conglomeration. I mention this as there may be more material covered in this episode that was not provided in the main article and its follow-ups. If there are any Italian citizens, or peoples reading this who have the appropriate accreditation to acquire a copy of this episode I would ask for your cooperation in attempting to do so. If someone has a copy of this simply recorded off of an old VHS I implore you to make that available to all.
Going back to the main article, the meandering to Communion is certainly off-putting, though I disagree with the previous mention that this was a hoax on the part of the publication to push Communion. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence after all (even though Carl Sagan never bothered with the evidence, side tangent: listen to J Allen Hynek talk about that here) But I believe these images were published in good faith on part of Nullo Cantaroni, his background and thorough career would make this unlikely.
So as it figures there are three scenarios here that describe this scenario (in no particular order of likelihood)
1) these images are hoaxed by the publication to push communion
2) these images are hoaxed by the supposed professor
3) these images are legitimate and provide evidence of a non-earth based entity.
Before I move on I'd like to mention that I did attempt to reach out to Corriere della Sera multiple times regarding this material but was never given a response.
To round this off the images themselves. Humanoid obviously, female-appearing, now I say appearing because assuming this really is some unexpected entity, there is no guarantee that the physiology of this figure accurately represents its determination, and although this entity appears to have what we'd consider to be skin, that may only be a covering to another form or may be some type of robotic synthetic life-form designed specifically to mimic human appearances. What may be most interesting or most alarming depending on your perspective is this entities face appears to change between shots, and yet seemingly keeps the same body proportions. If you are of the opinion this is some type of hoax you could state this is an obvious inconsistency between shots. On the other hand, that is an obvious conclusion to make and showing differentiating faces would be a rather odd choice on the part of a hoaxer. This again could be part of the photographing process, as there is motion blur between some of these photos and it simply gives an appearance that things are changing.
There are other features which must be touched upon, namely the clothing, but in one such photo, what appears to be some type of headgear wrapped around this entities face. To anyone with a passing knowledge of ufology and its associated lore would know, the favorite of any interstellar interloper is the tight formfitting bodysuit. Primarily described as blue, although other colors are often reported. But unlike most humanoid encounters described in the west, this entity seems to have a darker complexion about them. Now does that mean this does not fit in with established prior encounters? Not at all, for whatever reason the blonde-hair nordic is the most popular discussion topic when it comes to human-adjacent lifeforms, but in other places, and Italy especially, some of their most well know or most covered, feature entities with darker complexions. Case in point

This encounter in 1978 Italy with a dark-skinned entity in a shimmering scaled suit. Or this description of a dark skinned entity with a similar described blue suit reported in 1987
Location. Villamarzana, Rome, Italy Date: September 2 1987 Time: 1700
Renzo Munari was fishing on the Bianco Canal when he noticed a strange object flying at a moderated speed over the river, as the object disappeared from sight he felt a strange prickling sensation in his body, resembling electrical static. Turning around he saw a very tall human-like figure staring intently at him. The figure was at least 2 meters in height, with orange hair and dark skin. He wore a luminous blue colored tight fitting coverall. On the left side of his chest there was a square orange colored “tag.” During the encounter the witness felt a cool wave of air and light headed. The figure apparently disappeared into the brush.

There is also this report from 1989 Russia
Location. Salsk, Rostov region, Russia Date: August 13 1989 Time: 2300
Working at a cotton irrigation plant Vasiliy Ivanovich suddenly experienced total equipment failure without any apparent cause. While searching for the cause of the breakdown, the witness heard a loud voice, “He is searching for the cause”. Looking around he saw four humanoids standing close to him. One stood in the front, while the other three stood in the back. He described the humanoids as tall, with long dangling arms, with a large head, flattened on the top and wide at the temples. The humanoids are dark red or brown in color with large egg-shaped eyes and two holes instead of a nose. They have no lips, and thin strip instead of a mouth. They were wearing truncated shiny blue coveralls and footwear. The humanoid standing at the front of the others held a box in his hand and a soft pleasant voice seemed to emanate from the box. He held the box at stomach level. Ivanovich approached the humanoids and asked who they were; the reply was a question asking him if he wanted to go with them. At this point the witness saw a light at the edge of the nearby woods and a hovering object. The humanoids then floated slowly towards the craft and disappeared. Terrified the witness ran to the village to notify other witnesses but upon returning to the site the humanoids had already left.

As for the headgear, there is a report from 1995 Italy of an entity not resembling this one in this post, but wearing a similarly described headpiece.
Location: Ancona, Italy Date: February 3 1994, Time: 9:00am
Six witnesses, including a Mr. Giulo observed a strange humanoid wandering around some nearby rocks. The humanoid was described as about 1 meter and a half in height, wearing a tight fitting black coverall that covered his whole body including a pair of very long feet. The face was elongated with two huge round eyes, with round black pupils. It appeared to be wearing earphones with a small thin protruding antenna. It seemed to stagger slowly and after about 10 minutes it rose up slowly and vertically into the air, quickly disappearing from sight

There is also this case from Barisciano Italy 1978 in which an entity bearing a striking similar blue color to the outfit was seen, with an adorning white "cap" or hairpiece that resembled that of a cap. read the untranslated version of that encounter here/Notiziario%20UFO%20-%201984%2001-02%20-%20Vol%2018%20No%20102.pdf)

Finally, lets get back to the person allegedly behind this whole spiel, the Professor. A claim such as this, where an entity appears in ones presence without any known means is a stark claim all on its own, to provide photos of such an encounter is another thing all together, but being as its an anonymous person, how can we gleam any credibility out of this? To put it in other words, is there enough information provided within the original article as well as the follow-up articles to speculate on a potential identity to who this man could have been?
Emphatically yes, infact there is only one such individual who fits the criteria with the information provided, granted this information was given after the fact of the original articles publication. In the first article within UFO express that discusses this, we are told this person is running experiments relating to dogs (canine) eyesight, but the author was unsure whether or not this is a jest of some sort. I do not believe it is, in the secondary article it is again mentioned that this professor is working with canine eyesight, but in a caption on the second page it is emphasized this was "non-academic research". Now does that mean it was unrelated to their professional focus? No, it simply means this research was carried outside of official means. This leads me to who I believe the primary suspect is in terms of a potential identity, could there be other more accurate people? Perhaps. But this persons tenure and level of research within this subject and the timeframe of when they were working at the University of Pavia lines up perfectly with who this person could be. However, because of doxxing concerns, and that they initially requested complete anonymity from the publication I will not be directly naming their identity here. But I will heavily state that this person worked in the university of Pavia from 1985 in the zoology department and specifically with foxes and wolves. With this person having worked and published (into the present) works related to both of these fields. I have attempted to personally reach out to this professor both via email & telephone (their academic numbers, not personal) but have received no response. I would ask that if you do look into who this person is that you do not attempt to directly contact them as their lack of a response is response enough.
What was the encounter like? How long did it go on for? Was there a conversation or was this a quick in and out? These questions and more are not answered here, and perhaps never will be unless someone; the professor, an associate, or anyone else, comes forward with more details we are left wondering and wanting more. There is of course much to be said about these images and the potential for further investigations, including the peculiar hands this entity seems to posses that does have a passing resemblance to other cases, but lest this drag on to long I will leave it here and attempt to answer any questions that I may be capable of giving insight on.

See below.
https://preview.redd.it/tc06rvxum60d1.png?width=341&format=png&auto=webp&s=141ee2128cdcd0894f57f999876ff380a4def235
See below.
https://preview.redd.it/39i2rdvxm60d1.png?width=280&format=png&auto=webp&s=14bf476ca33164db334bc4b835a52b349d66990d

Your E.T. seems to me to be a feminine being...
I forwarded his observations to the professor in Pavia, author of the photos depicting the hypothetical alien. Thank you for your interesting analysis.

I have attempted to personally reach out to this professor both via email & telephone (their academic numbers, not personal) but have
received no response.

See below.
https://preview.redd.it/ntnngh1fo60d1.png?width=341&format=png&auto=webp&s=7685ab304637834f06c14c93b6158e23f8ed66a6
Unassuming on some random blog that attributed a name to this entity while providing no further information regarding the image itself (as certain ufological circles are want to do). Not finding further information I attempted to find further information based off of this colorized image, but to no avail. Save for one source that used this image ( in a different colorized manner, slightly less yellow and oozing with potential, that being this image by Argentinian Ufologist Dante Franch. See below.
https://preview.redd.it/y99g6yhho60d1.png?width=280&format=png&auto=webp&s=a784d5d82998aab7784b0e0ff8507bf999b7e320

Your E.T. seems to me to be a feminine being...
{end of article caption}

2024.05.13 02:39 CheeseTaxAccountant Whooshing and dizzy lying on my stomach

I’ve been sitting on my bed doing schoolwork and when I go from sitting to laying on my stomach (to give my back a break) I get really dizzy, loud whooshing and pressure on my eyes.. saw my neuro ophthalmologist a week ago and I only have mild optic nerve swelling. He wants me to go see neuro for their insight (dizziness, headaches, head pressure, brain fog, eye pain, light sensitivity have been worsening recently) I got an appointment with an NP at a neuro office May 30th because everyone is booked out for months.
I’m worried with how much my IIH symptoms have been increasing lately that my pressure is up but not showing much swelling on my optic nerves.
I’m not really sure what to do because he wasn’t much help and thinks I have migraines or a headache disorder.
Just looking for some support and advice.
** I’m on lasix 20mg twice a day because I couldn’t tolerate diamox or topamax

2024.05.12 15:06 BiasMushroom A Rose by Any Other Name (A NoP Fic Ch 66) Part 15

Nature of Humanity Ch 66
A Rose by Any Other Name, Part 15
A Fanfic of u/SpacePaladin15’s work “The Nature of Predators.” Thank you for the story!
___
Memory transcription subject: Talen, Prime News Anchor
Date [standardized human time]: November 3rd, 2136
Hospital lights are infamous for being bright to the point of inducing migraines and eye fatigue. This is, of course, done for a ‘good’ reason. To discourage Predators from attacking hospitals for an easy meal. It’s common knowledge a predator will attack the weak, sick, and injured before attacking someone that can actually fight back. It surprised me when I learned this was one of the few ‘facts’ the Federation actually had, mostly, right.
Unfortunately, in practice all these lights have ever really done is attract bugs and the Arxur. Like a neon side at an all-you-can-eat salad bar, the power draw alone was a beacon for raids. This has led to many people choosing to suffer in silence rather than be admitted to a hospital.
My mind flashed to the angry Texan ranting about the poor quality of life we awarded to those less fortunate than ourselves. Thoughts of the older woman who confessed to us that her husband had been shot and left as a sacrifice to Human soldiers made me wonder if these hospitals were actually built to serve… another purpose. To act as a distraction, so the Federation can evacuate those they actually value.
I glanced at the doctor and nurse leaving Rose's room. My application to be her guardian was… weak at best, and still under UN review. Most likely they wouldn't provide me any information beyond just whether I could see her or not.
One of the Venlil doctors looked tear-struck as he gave one last glance back into Rose’s room. He quickly perked himself up or at least put the facade on as he walked over to the waiting room. He scanned the human faces in here as he asked, “McDermott? Talen McDermott?”
The sudden addition to my name caught me off guard to the point I just sat in stunned silence. After a moment of looking around he asked again, before looking at his notes with a confused look on his face. Before he left, I gently raised my paw into the air, “My name is Talen. Just Talen. I applied for guardianship over Rose McDermott. It's still in review…”
He cocked his head to the side for a moment before his assumptions finally broke, “Ah! My apologies. If you would, please come with me, sir.”
The doctor led me to his office and offered me a seat. As he started to type on his computer, he flicked an ear to the screen facing me as a QR code came up. As my pad downloaded the data packet, he began to explain, “Alright, so as you are aware Rose has been through… some traumatic events. Both physical and mental.”
I started to look through the data as he carried on, “To start with, she clawed out most of her eyes. The nerves at the back of the eye were mostly fine and took to the nerve plate well. When she's had some time to heal, it should be simple to restore her sight. The main issue we have is that the war is stepping up, and we are getting more people coming back in need of our cloning machines.”
He pulled up a small list of human prosthetic companies on my pad, “Which means we can't make Rose a new set of organic eyes for… the foreseeable future. Which is why we opted to prep her for Optics while we wait. These companies have been vetted as trustworthy manufacturers, and the Hospital we plan to transfer Rose to on Venlil Prime will be more than capable of handling the installation.”
By the stars, how close was I to failing to save her at all? I nodded my head as I bit my lip and tried to stay calm, “Alright. So she will have prosthetic eyes soon?”
He wagged his tail meekly, “Maybe in about [two weeks] if the healing goes fine. It's best not to rush nervous systems when it comes to healing. It's not an easy process.”
He showed me an X-ray of Rose's teeth, “Now as for her teeth, we were able to save those. They are set in place but still need time to heal. It will take about twenty-one days for them to heal to a point where she can use them as she would normally.”
He pulled multiple photos of federation friendly, Terran food up, “So soft food until then. Soups, leafy salads with nothing hard… I have included a list and a few links to human recipes that will more than meet her nutritional requirements while she recovers, as well as into her care under you until she ages out.”
My mind drifted to the pills she had been given, “Ok then uhm, what about the medication she was on? Something like that… It could…”
He gently laid his paw on mine, “Her system is clean and showing no signs of a chemical dependency. That doesn't mean there won't be mental factors involved that could encourage her to seek escape through pharmaceuticals again. So long as her mental needs are met, she should recover well.”
I glanced up and quickly wiped away a few tears, “Ok, then… I don't know if I am the best person for that…”
“A lot of her care will simply just be showing her love, affection and that she matters and there is nothing wrong with her being human.” He looked ashamed as he spoke, “She will still need… Human care. From my personal research into the field, Humans need physical contact to be healthy and deteriorate slowly when isolated.”
He leaned forward and flicked his ears for my full attention, “Also do NOT let any Federation trained Psychiatrist near her. The Humans are miles ahead of us in terms of psychology and the treatment of those whose minds differ from the norm. It won't be easy to get a human Psychiatrist, but Rose will be high up on the list of those available to get help. Partly due to her unique situation but also to her parent's service and sacrifice.”
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding. I will never be able to give her everything she needs, but I can at least hold the tide back long enough for those who can. I have an empty bedroom for her to make her own… I'm not far from a refugee center school, so it shouldn't be hard for her to interact with other humans in a friendly environment… Food costs are going to go up… Ah. I haven't been working… Kotaka isn't going to fire me, but I have used all of my vacation time for this… I let out a lite cough, “And payment?”
He gave a curt nod, “Already paid. Part of her compensation for her parents’ service and sacrifice.”
I hope they don't know how their daughter was failed after everything they gave for her, “I'd like to see her if that's possible.”
He stood up from his desk, “Of course, follow me.”
We left his office behind and navigated the winding hallways designed to hopefully slow an Arxur raider from clearing the hospital quickly. I could remember when hospitals were built with quickly traversing them in mind. It took nearly no time to get to Aylin when she went into labor… it took the Arxur nearly no time to get to her in the hospital she was working at.
He stopped just at the precipice of one of the room's and rasped his knuckles on the door frame, “Rose? Are you awake? Your guardian is here to see you.”
He flicked his tail for me to enter as he turned the lights on. Rose was sitting right there. Her bed had been raised to a sitting position, but her head was leaned against a pillow as she slept. The doctor flicked the light's on, and I angrily gestured that she was sleeping.
I felt a bit stupid when I realized why the lights being on wouldn't bother her right now. He smiled like both a Venlil and a Human and dimmed the lights to half brightness before ducking out of the room. I crept as quietly as I could to Rose's bedside, my unkempt nails clacking against the floor. Yet, Rose didn't stir as I sat in a nearby chair.
Every time we have met has coincided with some of the worst times for us. My mind blamed me. Not for my failure to control myself back during the exchange program. But for seeking her out. If I had respected her parent's wishes of us never speaking again, then surely they wouldn't have died. Earth wouldn't have been bombed. Rose wouldn't- Rose wouldn't- … I'm full of shit.
The events that led to this were primarily out of my control. Beyond my failure, I wasn't the one who convinced the Gojids to try and attack, nor was I the one who made the Krakotl actually do it. I didn't introduce that predator Venlil to Rose. He was just trying to help her. I did the only thing I could, and if I hadn’t… no one else was coming to save her.
I leaned forward and grasped her hand in my paw. Physical contact was proven to drastically improve a Human's ability to heal.
Her skin was cold under my paw pads. Would she call them beans like the lady who helped me find her?
Her hand flexed around mine, squeezing it with just the slightest amount of force. Have her dreams just changed? Hopefully, for the better. Will she awake and know who is here beside her?
With my free paw. I swept a blood orange lock of greasy hair from her face. It's been so long since I had the slightest glimpse of her face burned into my mind. Now half of it was covered in bandages.
I sat and waited as she rested. As time ebbed and flowed on around us, nurses would come in and check her vitals as she slept. Eventually, her doctor returned and unprompted explained the painkillers she was on were known to cause drowsiness. She likely hadn't been sleeping well.
He wrote me a short list of sleep aids that were human safe… well, rather he was until he decided to throw it away and write me a list of the ones to not give her. Humans were starting to become infamous for the toxin tolerance in the medical field as many doctors were uncomfortable prescribing such high doses of medicine for their new human patients.
Her thumb began to work its way through the fluff on the back of my paw as Rose slowly stirred awake. Her grip tightened a little bit as she groggily turned her head in my rough direction, “hrm… hello?”
My words caught in my throat as I tried to speak a dozen thoughts at once. Her hand pulled away in fear as she held herself in her arms, “I'm sorry! I'm sorry… I didn't mean to scare you.”
“No!” My right law landed on her shoulder eliciting a small surprised jump, “Don't apologize Rose. Don't ever apologize for just existing. You have done nothing wrong.”
Her hand found its way to my paw resting on her shoulder still and grabbed it. She looked confused as she tried to place my voice, “I- uh- who- Do I know you?”
Once again my words hung In my throat, but I squeezed Rose's shoulder and could see a small bit of the fear leave, “It's me Rose… I know I wasn't supposed to contact you but… It's me. Talen…”
Her hands flew to her mouth as her breath hitched in her lungs. I could hear sobbing begin as she tried to speak, “I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I-”
My free paw quickly found its way to her cheek as I stood up. I pulled her closer, into my arms and instinctively groomed her hair. She wrapped her arms around me and squeezed, and I wrapped my arms around her and squeezed just as hard. Her head sunk into the fluff on my chest as she began to sob.
I held her. As tenderly as I could. Memories of holding a young Elva, who had just come back from another terrible day at school, rushed back to my mind, “Rose, you weren't the reason- What happened back on the station had nothing to do with you.”
She managed to choke out a “But-”
I shook my head, “No buts. None. When the Arxur killed my wife, I was on a call with her. I witnessed it. When Elva was being bullied at school for being a little more assertive than normal, I had to stop the exterminators from locking her away in an institution. As a news reporter, I've seen so many supposedly good people do horrid things to those with no power.”
I groomed the top of her head to give me a chance to compile the rest of my thoughts, “So when I did my job as a journalist comparing what the Federation ‘knew’ about humanity and what humanity was saying about itself… I couldn't see what was the truth. When my Daughter wanted to join the exchange program with me… I only joined, so I could try and keep her safe.”
I ran my paw across the top of her head, “Then I met you. I forgot my fears. I never addressed them. Just buried. Then we were sent to different stations and I realized I couldn’t protect Her. When you finally walked into the room, I had been slipping into a panic spiral and… well… I broke. I was desperately trying to get to Elva, trying to rationalize what I have witnessed against propaganda against you, trying and failing to separate what happened to Aylin with what was happening then and I… failed to.”
Rose's sobbing had begun to calm down as we just held each other. I took in a deep breath and felt it catch in my lungs. The tear soaked fur on my face stuck to my it as I pressed my head to the top of hers.
She slightly pulled away but stayed in my embrace, “I'm sorry about Elva. She was so nice…”
The sorrow in her voice caught me off-guard, “Wha- why are you sorry about her?”
Her head dipped, “I- I saw your news coverage of the Cradle raid. I recognized her when it- when that Arxur killed her. If it wasn't for us- she wouldn't-”
I ran my paw over her head, “Elva didn't die. She is actually going on a special mission for the UN right now. Even then, it's not Humanity's fault that happened. If Humanity hadn’t shown up, the Arxur raid that attacked the other exchange station would have led to another raid on Venlil Prime. It would have led to all of us dying.”
I cooed over her, “Humanity has been a blessing every person in this galaxy has needed. For the first time in my life, I feel like things might actually improve. Humanity- No. You have lost so much. I know how much it hurts to lose your parent’s to war. Though, I had gotten the joy of spending most of my life with them. I am so sorry this has happened to you.”
She buried her face in her hands, “I miss them so much. I just want them back!”
I pulled her back into my arms, “Don’t let go of it, Rose. Everything you have of them still… carry them with you. Make sure the world doesn’t forget them.”
Her sobbing came back, thick, heavy and ugly, but I didn’t run as she gripped me with every bit of strength she had. I held her as she fell back asleep.
As gently as I could, I laid her back against her pillows and cleaned some mucus off her face. I was also grateful for the cleaning room they had in the hospital as I prepared myself to function as a pillow once more. It wasn’t long before she stirred again, “I’m right here, Rose. I am not abandoning you.”
She nodded her head as she held herself with her arms, “What’s going to happen now?”
I moved a fiery lock of hair out of her face, “Well… I have applied for guardianship of you… at least until you are old enough to live on your own. Then you can leave at your leisure. I- You are always welcome in my home. Speaking of which, we will be headed to Venlil Prime soon. It’s a better environment there. Most of the Venlil in Dayside city are human friendly. You are getting transferred to a hospital there and will be staying with me. I am also going to try and get you to see a human Psychiatrist. Well, I may also see if they’ll see me. I could use some help too.”
Rose didn’t laugh at my joke, “Meji. He- He was always kind to me. Even with everything that was done to him, he was just really nice and tried to help me. I know he’s a drug addict, but- I don’t think he will survive much longer here.”
I tried to steer the conversation away from that… man, “I- I met him… and I think he’s going to be able to take care of himself just fine.”
I could hear the fear in her voice, “No… he's… he’s only been on the streets for six months… and that’s what he looks like. I watched him lose weight… he's just not…”
Here I am… he's probably in the same boat that Tarlim was once in. What kind of fucking idiot am I!? Of course, every institute is going to be the same. I cleared my throat, “I know he got the attention of some human soldiers. They got him to see one of their doctors. If I know anything, then he is probably being helped whether he wants it or not. I will do my job as a reporter and get the scoop on him for you. But for right now, let’s… Let’s rest. It’s been a long road, and we haven’t had a chance to shelter from the storm.”

It’s been a long time coming but these two are probably going to be fine… probably.

2024.05.12 00:55 Finding_jenn2 Frustrated

I had a neuro ophthalmologist appointment and am sooo discouraged, confused, pissed...all the above. My neurologist diagnosed me iih without paps in April, but was relying on this provider for management. I had an opening pressure of 29, mri with partially empty sella and bilateral venous stenosis. I have eye pain, head pressure/aches, ear ringing/heart beat, whooshing sensation when standing too fast. I was put on diamox but my neurologist took me off after I developed edema and couldn't keep food or water down being on it. My eye exam noted optic disc flattening horizontally, pupil size larger on left, Bruch's membrane layer was deflected away from the vitreous, and eye drifting. She said to me she will not agree with the diagnosed of this condition, I don't want it and I can find a doctor who will but i will end up on the OR table or dead. She said my mri means nothing, my lumbar puncture was not done correctly because on the east coast it is done in the fetal position and mine was on my stomach tilted on my left side. She doesn't know why the west coast does it this way. She said i have abnormal migraines and a congenital defect of the eye causing all of these symptoms. Can someone help me please? Am I missing something? What do I do now? I have been fighting for 7 months to figure out what is wrong with me. 😭

2024.05.11 16:15 Apothecarin "200 Hours sniping in Tarkov" 20 points:

First thing's first, here's the weapon wiki, every weapon will have it's default ammo which is vital for long-ranged sniping. Now, onto the actual bulletpoints.
  1. Quit using 1-6x reticle, prioritize 3-12s, 4-16s, you're sniping you should NEVER have to use a scope within 100 meters. [every 1x optics is measured in 100 meters, so a 4x optic would have the maximum range of 400 meters]
  2. Bring a PISTOL, not an smg, smgs silhouette hard on your back even with the stocks removed. Also, familiarize yourself with that pistol just as much as your rifle. It's your lifeline in 100> fights and SHOULD be relied on extensively.
  3. Level Jaegar to 3 ASAP, I prioritize jaegar every Wipe not just for sniping but for shotguns as well. Get him to 3 so the 34mm scope mounts are FAR cheaper, they vary far too much in price beforehand to be a reliable economic choice.
  4. Camouflage is FAR more important that armoballistic protection. You're not fighting, most of your loadout budget SHOULD be used on your rifle. Also, USEC has a major advantage over bear players because their default clothing IS Camouflage. Use a chimera, and a facemask/green shemga, and you'll blend in.
  5. DON'T MOVE, if you're prone in a bush, and you hear a person or two behind you, stay still. People call it ratty, I call it survivalability, I've been seen a handful of times because most [gigachads] play at max FoV and only notice when pixels move. This mean, don't ads, don't switch to your pistol, don't do anything just wait.
  6. Speaking of FoV, I use 100 FoV across every game which is between 68-69 on Tarkov. THIS IS VITAL for you to be able to reliantly gauge distance for sniping outside of using a rangefinder as a crutch.
  7. Rangefinder being mention above, there's no shame in using it, it takes 2-3 seconds to gauge distance for stationary targets which is fine for scavs but players won't give you that luxury. Only use them when you have absolutely no idea, learn to gauge distance ASAP and you'll be a better sniper for it.
  8. Change your keybindings for zeroing, I have a razor Naga x mouse and I have my zeroing on 7 and 8, it makes changing it on a fly FAR more effective and reliable than using page up and down. ALSO, change your focus to SHIFT-CONTINUOUS, this will make it so you don't run out of breath accidentally when change zoom levels.
  9. Pick 2 calibers, not weapons, calibers. 1 for early wipe [mine being .366] and 1 for late wipe [most choose 7.62x54r, I choose .308]. The MPS of the rounds are what matters, the barrels themselves don't come into play AS MUCH as the ammo which will keep you shooting consistently
  10. Early wipe, we're rushing for 4x optics or better rather that be the budget friendly vpo utg scope, or a trijicon. If you dont like the .366, its fine to use an adar or something till you have access to either the flea or prapor 2 for the sniper mosin.
  11. BALANCE means far more than pen, you want to be able to pierce level 4 for helmets, but it's not always required, level 3 is fine if the damage is good enough like .366 EKO. You're not fighting, you're killing, you should never expect to have to shoot multiple times, once should suffice. You're aiming for at LEAST an .80% hit rate with your rifle. Every, bullet, matters.
  12. Don't spam, we're sniping, our positioning and subtlety is VITAL. If you spam fire shots after whiffing one, you will 100% be found within moments. So ONLY take a shot you'll hit, and if you miss it, either wait patiently, or change positions, it's all varies based on the targets view and your location.
  13. Early Wipe, if the ammo you're using is absolute garbage for instance like warmage or geksa, shoot a leg out for a free headshot. Early Wipe no one really ever pre-pains, so a high damage Flesh round will guarantee a kill if you knock their leg out and they can't run. Just pace it for when they're out of cover so you can line a headshot up.
  14. In urban environments, don't stand in windows, stand feet away from the windows which not only silhouettes you less but makes your hit box and angle to be shot far less convenient for both scavs and PMCs.
  15. Don't always go up high, this WILL get you killed. The best sniping angles are the most unexpected, rather it be from stairs, or sandbag kill holes, or even from a random bush. If you're placed up high, you WILL be spotted, and you'll more than likely be flanked and killed.
  16. Be PATIENT, don't run around, we ONLY run when crossing open areas or fleeing. We walk, wait, listen, proceed. Running WILL get you killed, especially if you're solo, which i am the majority of the time.
  17. If you're sniping in a group, don't have 2 people sniping. Be smart about how you go in with friends, 2 snipers = 2 useless guns upclose if neither of you are decent with pistols.
  18. During co-op, don't move together if you're sniping. Play a supportive over-watch role, let your assault loadout player move forward while you cover their back. This is more a lighthouse/woods/shoreline thing because the open spaces vary much more often.
  19. Don't expect to become sniper elite over 200 hours, I'm still rough, I'm not perfect by any means and it's a continuous skill you have to grow. We're not gear reliant like normal players, we can't run max-level armor and weapon pen and just hip-fire things to death. Sniping takes SKILL, Map knowledge, positioning, patience, weapon knowledge, distance engagement practices, the works.
  20. Last but not least, every mil-dot is 100 Meters on most scopes in the game. I personally SWEAR by the Schmidt and bender 3-12, if I zero for 400 with BCP FMJ in an m700, I'll have another 400 worth a mil dots for a total range of 800. That's MORE than enough for any map on this game and some, to me it's THE best scope for sniping in this game. But everyone has their own preference, and this one is mine.
This is 20 points, if it's received well ill consider another list. I just got out of surgery so I'm still in and out, thanks for reading! 😊

2024.05.11 14:03 bluemoon112 Physical explanation of starbursts

Physical explanation of starbursts
I was recently going through the top posts in this subreddit and came across this post about starbursts. There's actually a really interesting physical explanation as to where they come from. Please refer to this article for more information: https://doi.org/10.1167/iovs.04-0935 In particular, refer to Figures 2, 3, and 4 (at the bottom of the page). I will also show these figures in this post.
DISCLAIMER: I'm a graduate student in astronomy so I cannot offer medical knowledge or advice. I can only provide a potential explanation of the physics behind this visual effect. The information in this post comes from the paper I linked above.
Essentially, a starburst is a homogeneous "speckle pattern" that is spread out across different colors of light. These "speckles" are likely caused by particulates in your eye. I'll describe why this happens later, but much like astigmatism and myopia, the mechanism described in the paper is related to the physical properties of light (albeit through a different mechanism than what causes astigmatism and myopia). It is not a neurological effect. Also note that these speckles are not related to the bright dots and/or static that you see rapidly changing.
Say that you have a fixed pattern of particulates in your eye, so it doesn't change over time. This means that the speckle pattern that you see also shouldn't change with time. It turns out that the size and spacing of these speckles gets bigger with the wavelength of light (i.e., redder light = bigger and more spread out speckles). If your eyes were only sensitive to one color and you stared at a bright point source (point source = a negligibly small light, one that's far away from you), you would only see these "speckles" and no starburst pattern. This is what the simulations in Fig. 3 of the article are showing below.
Figure 3: Simulations for a 0.2-mm diameter pupil, realistic particle distribution, and monochromatic light. Simulation parameters: coherent combination of light-scattering by 1000 particles uniformly distributed over a 0.2-mm diameter area in the pupillary plane for monochromatic light of 450-nm wavelength (A) and 650 nm wavelength (B). Figure sizes are 4.6° × 4.6° of visual angle. From van den Berg, Hagenouw, & Coppens (2005).
Thus, the combination of different wavelengths (colors) is what gives us the simulated starburst pattern shown in Fig. 4. Because our eyes are sensitive to multiple colors, the different colored speckles smear together and form the stripes in the starburst. [1] Yes, the zig-zag pattern in the stripes is real! This is unrelated to astigmatism, which I think would be caused by defects in the overall shape of your cornea and/or lens.
Figure 4: Simulated ciliary corona for a distant point source emitting equal-energy white light. Simulation parameters: uniform random distribution over a 4-mm diameter pupil of 1000 light-scattering particles of ∼0.724 μm radius. Figure size is 4.6° × 4.6° of visual angle. From van den Berg, Hagenouw, & Coppens (2005).
So what causes the speckle pattern to begin with? It seems to be caused by the combination of scattered light from all of the particulates in your eyes. Because light has wave-like properties, the light scattered off of each individual particulate will interfere with light from other particulates, kind of like how ripples in a pond come together. You can look this up but I find videos of ripple interference to be visually overstimulating so I won't link it here.
To illustrate the interference of light, Fig. 2 (below) shows simulated point-spread functions (PSFs) of eyes that have been affected by different amounts of particulates. The PSF encapsulates how good the image quality of your eye--or any imaging system--is. Basically, the image that you end up seeing with your eyes is the "convolution" between a theoretically perfect image and the PSF, where "convolution" is a fancy math way of saying that the PSF is blurring the image out. [2] The pattern in you see in panel A of Fig. 2 (below) is called an "Airy pattern." It's the theoretical best possible PSF of your eye, which is also referred to as the "diffraction limit". [3] Most people don't have perfect, diffraction-limited eyes due to varying degrees of near-/far-sightedness (also called defocus), astigmatism, and other effects. For reference, here's a link to some simulations showing how astigmatism affects the PSF of your eye, and how you would see the letter "E" in each case. [4]
If you're looking at a point source then the image that you see looks like the PSF because the point source is too small to blur out. Panels B, C, and D show how the PSF is degraded by having increasing numbers of particulates. The authors generated the simulations by evenly distributing particulates of different sizes inside the eye. Each particulate causes a ripple in the light entering the eye. Each ripple degrades the PSF, making the image appear chopped up. Because there are lots of different sizes of particulates, there are many different sized ripples. The more particulates there are, the more of these light ripples occur. The combination of a large number of ripples along with the varying sizes of the ripples is what causes the seemingly random speckle pattern to occur. [5]
Figure 2: Illustration of coherent combination of light-scattering by 1 (A), 2 (B), 3 (C), and 30 (D) particles. For clarity, the illustration shows unrealistically small particle distances compared with particle sizes. True particle distances/particle sizes are larger by a factor of 300, meaning that the fringes and grain in (B), (C), and (D) should be smaller by a factor of 300. From van den Berg, Hagenouw, & Coppens (2005).
The authors of the paper mention that stray/scattered light in the eye is known to degrade night vision. Maybe the effect is worse in some people because they have more particulates and thus more scattered light in their eye? It would be consistent with the fact that those with visual snow often report seeing more floaters than normal.
I have had relatively mild visual snow for my whole life so it doesn't bother me, but I've been learning about different experiences of people as I read this sub... It's very sad to learn about how debilitating it can be :(((. It's interesting to think about the combination of optical, neurological, and other effects that may cause or exacerbate symptoms of visual snow syndrome.
Footnotes
[1] An interesting experiment: if you stared at a very bright monochromatic point source, i.e., a light of only one color from far away, would you see the speckle pattern and not the starburst?
[2] Convolution is how gaussian blur works in photo editing software. The PSF in this case is a gaussian function (another fancy math term that describes a very special curve) that blurs out the image. A wider gaussian means that the image is blurred more.
[3] The Airy function describes the diffraction limit for a circular pupil. If your pupil is bigger, then the Airy pattern (the theoretical perfect PSF of your eye) is smaller so you should have more spatial resolution. But that also means that you notice any aberrations (defects) in your image quality more easily. If your pupil is small, then the Airy function is more spread out it effectively covers up those aberrations, so you notice them less. This is why pinholes seem to improve your vision, with the tradeoff being that less light gets into your eye so everything is darker, plus less resolution. Also note that if the pupil of your imaging system is not a circle then the diffraction-limited PSF is not strictly an Airy function. And the diffraction limit is a result of quantum mechanics, but that's beyond the scope of this post...
[4] Astigmatism elongates the PSF into a line if you have some defocus, or a cross-pattern when in focus. This explains why astigmatism causes you to see lines and crosses coming out of traffic lights at night. If you rotate your head, the lines should rotate with you because the astigmatism is caused by the physical shape of optical components in your eye. In the same manner, you can tell whether the starburst is a physical effect by seeing if the pattern rotates as you tilt your head.
[5] Fun fact: Because the starburst is part of your eye's PSF it is literally always there. It's just hard to notice most of the time.

2024.05.11 10:27 wild_manul Help with dealing with physian

Long story short. I had bad ski accident several years ago and hit my head hard on the ice. I pretty much accepted I will have double vision, fatigue, brain fog, light sensitivity, headaches, bright dots and noise sensitivity and will need to learn to live with this. I live in New Zealand.
Then I went to see a doctor in European country, had few tests done, MRIs. He was the first doctor who really listened to my afterimages symptoms, every time I look at something I would see the exact copy of it but in grey colour, I also see traces of dark objects. MRI showed: Intraorbitally, the findings include uneven dilation of perineural spaces of optic nerves with the vertical tortuosity of the latter - indirect signs if intracranial hypertension. The doctor decided to try acetazolamide.
It works, I felt that I don't see afterimages anymore, I can work normally again. My headaches almost gone.
I returned back to New Zealand recently. Decided to find a specialist here. He didn't want to listen about how acetazolamide helps me, on the basis that nothing can be confirmed without lumbar puncture, he said he can't see how diamox is helping me and that it's all anxiety and migraine and just need antidepressant. Meanwhile, I feel so good on acetazolamide.
He looked at my European MRI, said he doesn't see anything in there. Ordered another MRI, said he doesn't see anything in there either. Called my home, said I should stop seeking second opinions and it's all my anxiety and I am looking for answers I want. That my European doctors are irresponsible and wrong, that I don't have any intercranial hypertension. He didn't want to contact them and discuss my case. I felt terribly dismissed and scared as acetazolamide helps me function.
I paused it for one week before MRI and felt absolutely terrible, worsening vision, coordination, brain fog.
I am not sure what to do to have proper help, do I need to ask to see another specialist here. I just hoped to find physian who will support me where I live not dismiss me.
What would you guys do? I have 3 MRIs done, all of them show indirect signs of intercranial hypertension, but the local neurologist thinks European radiologists are all wrong.... I had to go to hospital to Australia recently cos I felt very lightheaded and had other symptoms and they also suggested the same diagnosis. It just feels like I am not lucky to find care in home country so far.
Thanks so much.

2024.05.11 08:20 Scary_Bluebird Fingertips still numb 2 months after neck injury - other neuro hx provided

I (24F) had a whiplash injury 2 months ago and lost feeling in the distal and lateral surfaces of all my fingers plus my lateral palms a couple days later. Went to ER and had a Cspine MRI with NAF. They essentially suspected I had inflammation pressing on my nerves and causing the numbness, but that it would resolve when the swelling did. The pain is gone and ROM of my neck is back to normal, but I still have reduced sensation in some of my fingers. The amount of numbness seems to vary depending on the day.
Due to how long this has persisted, a part of my brain (the hypochondriac part) is wondering whether there’s something else at play. I saw a neurologist for a couple years for a few different idiopathic neuro symptoms including; non-epileptic myoclonic jerks, severe debilitating migraines and optic neuritis. Ultimately we never determined the cause for these issues, but they discussed the possibility of auto-immune dz or MS. Now that I’m exhibiting this new symptom, I’m just feeling nervous about whether the sensation loss had nothing to do with the neck injury but just coincidentally started at the same time. I never got closure about my original neuro issues and my Dr basically said I might only ever get answers if my symptoms get worse or if new ones arose. How would I know whether that was the case?
Should the neck injury numbness be resolved if the pain and mobility has improved? How long do I wait before bringing it up to my GP or contacting my old neurologist?

2024.05.11 03:14 KaristinaLaFae Bedbound Disabled Gamer & Digital Creator looking for 15" screen, ~$1,000 USD

Thank you for the guidance. I found an Open Box, Like New ASUS Vivobook with similar specs to the M3500 at a local retailer for under $1,000 - over a $450 savings from retail price, and my husband can pick it up in an hour!

Total budget:
~$1,000 USD, maybe more if this one doesn't die for a little while longer. I've been waiting to get approved for US disability benefits after becoming unable to work in 2020, so my budget isn't great.
Are you open to refurbs/used?
Would consider if trustworthy source
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance reliability is most important. Battery life would be nice during power outages, but I don't travel like I used to so I'm rarely not plugged into a power outlet.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very. It just needs to fit on my overbed table with room for a mouse on the right.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
~15"
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Hungriest game I play is Cities: Skylines 2 - Recommended requirements, not minimum, so I can use mods.
Also need to do photo and video editing with Paint Shop Pro, Canva, ClipChamp, etc. Potentially run localized AI services, but just nice to have, not a requirement. I tend to have ~15 browser tabs open at any given time in both Chrome and Firefox (personal and creative work, respectively)
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm okay with 30-60 fps on medium-high settings
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality, decent webcam for YouTube/Zoom, enough USB ports for my mic, mouse, and smartwatch charger, good keyboard. Bluetooth. Windows 10 preferred, if possible, but I'll have to learn to live with Windows 11 if I can get everything else at an affordable price except for that.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm running an old Lenovo that sounds like an airplane taking off anytime it's not sleeping or off. I need something quieter because of my migraines. I cannot open video files any longer except inside a video editor, despite file type associations. I cannot open my image editing software unless I just rebooted. I haven't been able to update my GeForce GTX drivers in a couple of years, and Adobe Acrobat refuses to update either. Most current laptops are an upgrade, but I want something that won't be this completely useless in two years.
I'm currently rolling with the completely insufficient:
  • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
  • Installed RAM: 16.0 GB
  • System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
  • 1 TB storage
  • Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1650 Ti

2024.05.11 01:07 Ok_Cause_869 Looking for insight on my experience

I just found this subreddit and it’s really heartening to see so many other people with this condition supporting one another. I guess I wanted to see if anyone with IIH had a similar experience or any insight to my life with IIH.
I was diagnosed at around age 13 when my optometrist noticed my swollen optic nerves. Cue years of appointments and tests (MRI, MRV, LP, the whole shebang) and I ended up on Diamox for a few years. I recently accessed my doctors’ notes from that time and at my last appointment they took me off the Diamox that I needed to continue to lose weight.
Flash forward 15 years and I finally have adult health insurance, so again, at a routine eye exam they refer me to a neuro-opthamologist. I just got out on Diamox again and told to lose weight again. I kinda just agreed and didn’t ask questions, since I’d already been around this block before. Plus I’ve been working to build the workout habit since last year. My diet not so much, been overweight my whole life and reliant on food for comfort, and I have PCOS..
Well, I honestly didn’t remember having bad symptoms as a kid, but I sure as heck have them now. Pins and needles in my feet and hands and I can’t drink my beloved Diet Coke anymore.
The side effects are so much worse than I remember. And I’m wondering why the IIH is back? Of course I’ve gained weight since I was 13… but I’ve never really had any crazy symptoms. I get the whooshing thing sometimes, but I’ve had migraines and headaches since I was 8 years old. Idk I guess I’m just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? Like, has anyone been diagnosed as a kid and again as an adult? Or any advice on coping, lol.

2024.05.11 00:54 RegrettablyTheClown Betrayed By My Best Friend, is it time for legal action?

Reddit, I am going to post this on a throw away because I am scared of potential legal repercussions and well, this person's state of mind and friends. I am a female, as I read this back I realise I almost look like a love sick boy who couldn't see what was in front of him. I had a lot of platonic love for her, she truly was an amazing person.
Before I delve in, it's a long one, so grab a cup of tea, maybe a biscuit or two. I am not sure what Im hoping for here; support, validation, advice? Im not sure, what I am sure of is that I can no longer tell the difference between my logical thought processes and my emotional reactions. So Im hoping you guys can provide a perspective I havent thought of, tell me my title is true and to suck it up, or validate my potential actions.
Once upon a time, I had a beautiful best friend. She just seemed to have the absolute worst luck and I had always been there to support her, we were inseparable. We'd often joke she must be (enter bad person of your choice)'s reincarnate. I say beautiful because she was a beautiful soul, lit up the room, lit up my life, altruistic, kind, thoughtful, considerate and would do anything for anyone, even to the detriment of herself.
The latest in this saga of her drama, she got a brain tumour. To this day we arent sure if it was caused by an accident at work but after that incident a mass was located, it seemed to disappear but less than a month after it disappeared a brain tumour was there in it's place. Michelle, now newly diagnosed with a brain tumour was understandably panicked but I reassured her that it was caught and we'll deal with it, whatever comes, as we always have with life's challenges. I can't tell you where it all went wrong from here, Reddit, so I'll paraphrase to get to my dilemma today. After 2 years, the NHS admit they've never seen a tumour like this, it's not responding to treatment and it's growing at an alarming rate that medication does not seem to be slowing down - at its biggest she claims it was 6cm x 5cm. They decide to withdraw treatment to 'see how it gets on'.
When she's telling me this, all I hear is 'you're going to die' but due to the pain and sleepless nights she seemed oddly at peace with this, thinking it was a good course of action. I express to her that I think the NHS has given up and she should consider private treatment. She expresses concerns about money and I instinctively say 'dont worry about that, we'll just get you right'. I completely underestimated the cost of this treatment it turns out but she managed to get a financial agreement and a medical loan and some other bits and she went ahead with the treatment. The treatment was intense, she couldn't work her full hours and the interest and penalties for late payments were extreme, so I stepped in. I could afford it and I wanted my best friend to focus on her recovery. As part of that she couldn't make her car payments either, which she needed for work and I needed her to have a job so she could one day repay me, so I covered that too, into the 1000s of pounds. Michelle always expressed gratitude, and I asked her not to work so much overtime and to focus on her recovery, that's why I was helping her and told her the more she pushes herself the longer her healing will take so this rush to get back on her feet was actually defeating the aim of getting back on said feet.
At some point, I started to get a weird feeling, she no longer seemed guilty to ask me for money, and the gut feelings kicked in. I started noticing a distance in her which I had assumed it was because she was knackered, recovering and processing basically a near death experience and thought nothing of it. My people pleasing self was happy to help, my selfish self was happy to be keeping my best friend in the whole wide world with me on this earth. There was also a boy... I didnt like the boy, James. I clocked him from the start as a manipulative, borderline narcissistic nasty shell of a man, but she was smitten. Throughout her treatment, she wasnt reliable, cancelling last minute due to being unwell and was dull and depressed often. James did what any boyfriend would do, told her she was 'too much' and left, then came back when he was horny, left again etc (please note this sentence is sarcastic). I told her I wasnt impressed by him and I was not a fan, over the years I worked out they'd have a major falling out every 3.8 months, and they were just the ones I knew about. Michelle was constantly at my house (she moved in and I looked after her for 3-4 months at one point) and was crying her little heart out, showing me his gaslighty texts (go away/come back, hot/cold behaviour), I was there through it all. Many a time I went to work absolutely out of it through lack of sleep, supporting her or being kept awake by her crying herself sleep over him in the next room. I'd take her shopping/out for food and try and console her pointing out that this is not good at all, but she said she needed a man because the comfort he could provide was different. I didnt agree, I thought he was making everything 10x worse, but I understood her thought process. James whisked her off on holiday while I couldn't afford a holiday, I was angry and I spoke to her about it.
I told her that Im glad she got away and had a great holiday but we'd actually had plans, she didnt even tell me she was going, she just went. When she came back we had a big talk and I thought all was well, until 2 weeks later she asks for money for her car. I feel trapped at this point because if I dont pay for the car, she loses her job, no return payment. So I do and spit at her that James should be supporting her after all the trouble he's caused - Im angry. This was July 2022. Michelle tells me that she wants me to like James, I said Im sorry but I dont and Im not going to pretend I do. I remind her of all the times she was crying over him and the events that caused it and of the incident the tumour took her eyesight when she was driving and James refused to tell me where she was so I could pick her up and take her to the hospital. I got it out of her eventually by her telling me where she was when it happened. After the hospital she ranted about his selfishness and manipulation all the way home. I laugh and tell her I hope she remembers this when she's sober from the meds the hospital put her on to reduce the inflammation on her brain (pressing her optic nerve, which is why she lost her eyesight) and gets shut of him.
At some point between then and Feb 2023 she's given the all clear of the tumour, hurrah.
The friendship appears to return to almost normal, but on reflection when I asked her for help (mental and emotional, not financial) someone's always got a bigger thing going on (usually created by themselves) and she just wasnt there for me. I felt entitled to that help given everything I'd done for not only her, but her family which I wont go into (lets just say a suicide attempt and CPS were involved), that's when resentment starts setting in. Im trapped, I can't say anything because if we arent friends, she wont give me the money I loaned her back... So I thought. Michelle then gets herself into a situation with another guy and ends up hooking up with him, though imo she was too drunk to do so. It has been going on for weeks, she was leading him on and I told her it'd backfire, it did. For months she refused to tell him she didnt want him / a relationship, while acting the girlfriend, sloping all over him etc and one fateful night she refused to go home with the designated driver and it happened. The friend group were mortified given it's grey space with what counts as r**e vs drunken mistakes and as a consequence, the friendship group disintegrated. The distance between us continues and I wonder if she blames me because I was the one who introduced her to this friend group. We talk and she says she doesnt hold me responsible, whether that's true, I'll never know.
By summer 2023 I'd been hit by a lot of surprise bills which I'd only just covered, then... knock knock, the tax man says I've underpaid tax and I need to pay it. They'd already capped my tax code and they wanted more so I had to pay it *now*. Then, my oven broken coupled with another surprise bill of £1000. My financial situation is screwed, so I reach out to Michelle, who may well have been dead if it wasnt for me, certainly wouldn't have had a car as it would have been repossessed and explain what's happened. I imply, but do not directly point out she's been working and I really need some help with my oven, she pays lip service to me about how awful it is and she wishes she could help. I push the issue and say it's £120 to repair the oven and Im skint and I can't now cook. Michelle wishes she could help but she "just cant".
A week later, guess who's going on holidays. I hadnt had a holiday for 2 years because I couldn't afford it as she was holding all of my savings. I pushed back some major work on my house I needed to have done because I couldn't afford it and she's.... on Holiday, with James, who she claims she wasnt with. Not to worry through as she claims she's going to treat me to a spa day to show how grateful she is for lending her all this money and I suddenly realise she's been lying about her relationship with him, they'd never broken up at all. I know he's in her ear whispering things about me as he made the mistake of trying to get a mutual friend involved in the slagging off of me, but he didnt join in, told me, and also told me Michelle didnt say anything about my involvement in her recovery (at this point the mutual friend didnt know I'd lent her a shed ton of money. Just that she'd moved in and I'd been looking after her and her family).
My mind casts back to when she was talking about bills and I suddenly realise she's been talking about *his* bills, even though he works full time, and my mind then reminds me she drunkenly told me about paying for family bills. She's been paying everyone's blimming bills apart from her own! I had to quit counselling, which I'd been in since her situation pushed me into a mental breakdown, I was hospitalised for 4 days. I had to cut back on my household bills such as food and mind the heating and worst of all, I had to ask my parents for money to fix the oven and then humiliate myself by explaining why in such a good job I couldn't afford £120 to repair. Well Reddit, if you've got this far and you want to call me an idiot and such, you've got nothing on what my parents said to me. So pretty please, dont bother.
So we are officially... not friends. I withdraw all contact, as predicted, no money comes... and I've no therapist, and cant afford one to help me process and manage this situation.
A few months later, I confront her and she bursts into how she's missed me and wants to meet up with me to make amends. Michelle apparently didnt know what to say! I guess 'Sorry' wasnt in her vocabulary. Im a little taken back, but I say sure... I want to hear what she has to say, so we meet up. All Michelle wants to talk about how great James is apparently, nothing about our friendship, what she did, nothing.
I leave and she asks to meet up soon. Im honest and say I need to process what's happened. She says to contact her when Im ready, I do, 2 weeks later. She blows me off for a meet up, I try again, blown off. That's 3 chances now... I understand now she realises she can't manipulate me into believing her pity party anymore. She's done with me, she can't use me anymore so Im useless.
After the fact I find out that the reason she didnt help me with my oven is she genuinely believes Im Ms Moneybags and that I was lying about my financial situation to 'guilt' her. Ironically, it was her lying about her financial situation as she was paying everyone elses way while I paid hers. I find out she's taken on drugs as a hobby and is exposing her little sister to it.
I contact her a few months later and tell her I want a payment plan. I feel strong, I got this. She messages me back non-nonchalantly and tells me she'll pay me what she can (after holidays, theater trips, day drinking and anything else she fancies, looking at social media) and somehow, the great lord grants me the ability to keep cool and I say Im not comfortable with that and we agree an amount. Im still delusional at this point, I can't believe what's happened and Im convinced she'll see the error of her ways and make amends. Nope. The amount we've chosen will take 3.8 years for her to pay me back in full and she refuses to set up a direct debit. I now suffer migraines, I've been diagnosed with stress, I beat myself up constantly and consistently, I have emotional flash backs/flares ups and Im just not in a good place. I need to get Michelle *out* of my life... but it's not an amount of money I can forgive, I know that for sure.
I cant talk to my friends about it because in some cases she's wronged them, so they're of course on my side. Im sick of being told Im stupid and to blame. I just tried to do a good thing, my parents are also on the -shrugs- "no good deed goes unpunished" side.
She's told me she's coming into some magical pot of money in the first half of this year and will pay me back in full. I dont believe her, and even if she did get this magic pot of money I dont think I'll see any of it. I will give her the benefit of the doubt, pigs may fly. But if not... what do I do? I can't continue to live like this! I accept the brain tumour did kill my best friend in the end, even though she's not 6ft under. I can't stand this new person she's become and dont trust her. I am also concerned about her friends because they have vandalised property of people who went 'against' them before.
So far my thoughts are:
  1. In July, ask her to take out a loan and repay the full balance to me, so that we may both move on with our lives - but if she says 'No' what can I do? Can I do anything?
  2. In July tell her she needs to pay me the amount she would have paid for her medical bill, she found it before on a lower paying job so now she needs to step up (this will mean she will finish paying me back in 9 months)
  3. Court action, so even if I get 10 quid a week, at least it's not in her control.
Help me Reddit, I've been a fool. Do I have to just accept my mistake, hope she does the right thing for nearly 4 years and accept that I was manipulated, taken advantage of, and I am a clown?
Edit: Yes it's documented as a loan, each paypal to her was with a note that said 'Loan - (What is was for)'. Also when we agreed the payment plan she's paid the bare minimum the last 5 months she has agreed in writing the full loan amount and acknowledged that it was a loan.

2024.05.10 23:41 Ralts_Bloodthorne Nova Wars - Chapter 58

[First Contact] [Dark Ages] [First] [Prev] [Next] [wiki]
Jaskel just stared. In horror, in shock, in fear, he didn't know.
He just stared.
The Terran was completely engaged, in the middle of all of the creatures. Their tentacles whipped at him, curved exoskeletal hooks slapping at him, blades emerging to stab at him, mechanical three prong grippers opening up to grab at the Terran and try to fire lasers directly into the Terran's skin. One moved forward, cavernous mouth wide open, a hot red glow in the back of the conical mouth, the teeth wiggling.
The Terran just shoved his fist through the creature's maw and caused it to explode into rags of flesh and chunks of armor, the tentacles falling to whip around on the floor as the punch continued to hit a rippling field in front of one of the crystalline creatures. The field collapsed in a shower of sparks.
"OH YEEAAAAAAAH!" the Terran gave a bass roar, stepping forward again.
"No shot, no clear shot," Jaskel said, moving his light machinegun around, trying to figure out what to shoot, hell, where to shoot that wouldn't hit the Terran.
"SHOOT, PUSSY!" the Terran roared out, grabbing one of the crystalline articulated 'tentacles' and ripping it free to jam the crystalline blade through the side of one of the green eyed creatures, continuing the blow until the blade shattered on the wall and the creature was pulped between his fist and the bulkhead.
Jaskel fired his weapon, seeing the liquid filled cartridges shattering on the Terran's skin, just coating his skin. The rounds that hit the crystalline creature that was backing up made the crystalline structure start to smoke and sizzle.
"YOU GOT NUTHIN!" the Terran roared out, knocking the last crystalline creature out of the way and rushing forward.
The one in the back screeched, trying to back up, flailing tentacles at the Terran. The blades chipped at the spikes, but did little else.
Besides get the tentacles in reach of the Terran.
One of the green eyed ones lunged at Jaskel and he hosed it with the LMG. The steel tip shattered armor, the lye splattered. The thing screeched, spinning in place, trying to interpose the tentacles between the full auto 150 rounds a minute and itself.
Jaskel just kept shooting, the tentacles shattering, the creature shrieking again, making his phasic shielding jump to 85%.
More creatures were flooding into the hallway, but Jaskel didn't have time to think about them, just shifting targets and firing as first one, then another collapsed.
The Terran was covered, but it kept grabbing with its hands, ripping the creatures off. The Terran would twist the tentacles, or squeeze the bulbous body, or smash it against the wall.
Still advancing on the larger one, which was flailing its seven remaining tentacles.
The Terran grabbed one of the black armored ones, ripped its tentacles off, slapped it twice, and tossed it as Jaskel.
"Catch!" it roared. "Live one!"
Jaskel let the LMG drop onto the sling, clumsily catching the one that was tossed. Black goo had covered the amputated tentacle stumps and then hardened. It screeched, trying to wriggle and bite.
Jaskel slapped it again.
"Jaskel, get that lunatic to pull back. The dropship is under heavy assault. NavInt wants us to pull back," the Gunny said.
"TERRAN! WE'RE LEAVING!" Jaskel shouted.
The Terran stopped, facing the bigger one with the red and green eyes.
The Terran held out its first two fingers in a 'V', touched just under his own eyes, then thrust them at the creature, which was still backing up.
"I'll be back for you, smartass," the Terran growled, starting to back up.
Creatures kept lunging out of doorways, dropping from hidden vents, lunging out of ventwork in the walls.
Jaskel barely got turned when one lunged out of a vent, the cover slapping him in the fact, the tentacles wrapping around him. The mouth glommed onto his chest and the body started pulsating.
The armor's defense went live, electricity arcing.
The creature dropped, smoking.
The Terran stomped on it.
Jaskel swallowed, still moving back. He kept shooting with one hand, the power armor's strength allowing him to keep the barrel steady. He just hosed the hallway, no longer concerned about hitting the Terran, who didn't seem to care about the highly caustic lye, the steel penetrator tips, or the kinetic energy.
An obvious robot lunged out and the Terran grabbed it, ripped off its arms, ripped off part of its hull, and then snatched out something that registered as a power-source on Jaskel's armor.
"Got a robot, bringing it back," the Terran rumbled.
Jaskel could see his words on his HUD right afterwards.
"Naw, it'll be fine," the Terran said. It kept reaching in and pulling stuff out. Jaskel saw what looked like bullets, maybe tiny missiles, a six-sided pinkish crystal he knew was one of the best types of crystal to use for blue-shift laser beams.
When Jaskel got to the huge crater, he could see the problem.
Robots and what looked like spiders with cannons on their backs were on the edge of the crater, firing down on the dropship and the troops moving into the dropship.
The Terran paused, lifting up one fist, arm bent and the elbow. He made a cocking motion, his biceps suddenly bulging and lumpy, leveled his fist, and started firing. Jaskel's armor ID'd it as 20mm magac shells.
"Get in the dropship, kid," the Terran said, turning and backing up, sweeping robots off of the lip.
Jaskel hustled to the dropship, noting that the Terran had handed off the gutted robot to another Telkan.
Jaskel ran up the boarding ramp, Captain Nakwel slapped the top of his helmet.
"Nineteen! All accounted for!" the Captain called out.
"Hammer Two Six, fall back, board the dropship," came a perfectly calm voice over Jaskel's radio. "Go garrison form on entry."
The medic onboard the dropship moved up to Jaskel, holding a stasis lock usually used for severed limbs. "In here."
Jaskel frowned, then remembered the creature he was holding. He nodded, shoving it into the opening. The medic closed it and it hissed, frost covering it.
The Terrans started boarding the dropship right as Jaskel heard the ship's point defense cut loose. Jaskel saw them go from huge monstrous looking forms to shrinking down, steaming, into the large Terrans.
They even had their shirts back.
"All loaded!" Captain Nakwel called out.
One by one they got in their seats as the ramp whined up and the side doors slammed shut.
It lifted off and Jaskel leaned back slightly, relaxing in his armor.
--that was fun-- 8814 said.
"Felt like a waste of time," Jaskel said. He closed his eyes. "Wake me if something stupid happens."
--roger roger--
Captain N'Skrek moved into the ready room, going over to his chair and sitting down.
His Command Staff as well as the Terran officers acting as advisors were all sitting down already.
N'Skrek waited a moment, lit a cigarette, then tapped his lighter against the top of the table.
"Sit-rep?" he asked.
"The singularity ignited. It should be stable for roughly ten years. Our Nav-Int complement believes it should slow, maybe even devour any Mar-gite clusters too close," Commodore Brakte'ek said.
N'Skrek nodded.
"Gravity focus lensing, while a good idea, would have kept us here for another four weeks to manufacture and deploy them," Commander KrekNak said. The Kobold tapped the table. "However, with Mar-gite clusters still warping in, the need to backtrack them is becoming more and more obvious."
N'Skrek puffed on the cigarette, then pointed at the hologram of the disabled enemy ship floating in the table's holo-emitter.
"We get anything good off of that hulk before we destroyed it?" he asked, looking at the Science Intelligence Section's Chief Warrant officer.
The Lanaktallan nodded. "Quite a bit of data," he pointed at the holoemitters that were cold and dark on the table. "May I?"
"Of course," N'Skrek said.
The Chief nodded and began typing on the holographic keyboard that sprang up under his lower hands.
The holograms came to life.
Molecular breakdown of the atmosphere on the ship. Molecular breakdown and scans of the interior structural elements. More breakdowns of the ship's armor, superconductor cabling. Finally, four holoemitters held images of the creatures that had defended it.
Only one didn't have a DNA/XNA breakdown underneath it.
"First item: They use steel in their interior construction," CW4 In'tel'lmo'o stated. "Nothing unusual, standard high grade steel. A little heavy on the chromium layer, but that's known to keep phasic energy from sinking into the metal too deeply," he tapped another key and the molecular breakdowns rotated. "Judging from the pieces brought back, the steel is gravity well manufactured, with the imperfections that point to a natural gravity well."
"So, they have planetary logistics and manufacturing centers?" one of the Terrans asked.
In'tel'lmo'o nodded. "Yes. Their manufacturing is not all that impressive in the materials department. The shimmering chrome liquid appearance is a function of their battlescreens, not any memetic polyalloy. That, and their armor is laminate with a chrome layer on the outside just over standard gold."
Everyone just made notes.
"Several of the Terran Monster Class found active data lines. Using induction pads built into their hands, they were able to intercept and observe data flows through superconductor as well as fiber optic," In'tel'lmo'o said. He nodded at Commander Hresket, Chief of the Intel Section. "Cryptography is working on the data."
"First of all, judging by pulsing, it looks like they use base-12 numbering. That gives us plenty of signal to look over," Hresket said.
N'Skrek annotated the information on his VR scratchpad.
The briefing moved into power generation and capability, battlescreen estimates (one of the Terrans had ripped a battlescreen projector free and then tore it apart while his scouter eyepiece had recorded it all), and other technological information.
"The object started bringing its engines online, that was when a recall was transmitted to the dismount team," CW4 In'tel'lmo'o said. "Which moves us to what we've all been waiting patiently through all of the briefing to get here. Everyone knows the prize is at the bottom of the cereal box."
That got light chuckles.
"Four life forms were encountered, as well as six different types of robots and what we believe are three autonomous or semi-autonomous drones," In'tel'lmo'o stated.
Images of the creatures popped up.
"They're XNA. Silicon was the predominate theory, based on the Mar-gite, which we have begun calling the Mar-gite Autonomous Bioweapon. However, data gathered by the Terran infantry showed that they are primarily boron based, with sulfuric running a close second. By what we have observed from life in the galaxy so far, that means that these creatures are native to a highly volcanic region with a high probability," In'tel'lmo'o stated.
He tabbed the big one, with the ten tentacles that ended in three manipulator claws. "This appears to the top of their system. The other four are all based on the same XNA template, just heavy modification. We believe they created, or evolution forced them into, several biological castes."
"Phasic energy is high in this one," the crystalline one shot through with red veins. "This one also has a higher sulfur and phosphorous dependency," he tapped the big one again. "This one also possesses phasic ability."
He tapped the other two. "These appear to be combat," the dark one with the gleaming spurs, then one that had a shiny, chrome-like surface. "This one appears to be primarily engineering and work, with built in manipulators and sensory systems."
There was brief video of the larger one firing off conical phasic bursts that made the misty atmosphere of the corridor ripple and twist.
"Standard waves of force, generated with phasic power," In'tel'lmo'o stated. He pointed one hand at the Terrans seated. "Consulting with those who fought against the Atrekna before the Terran Xenocide Event shows us that the upper life form's phasic abilities are not in the category of the Atrekna."
N'Skrek felt a bit of relief at that.
"Furthermore, consultation with Mantid phasic warfare specialists, we believe that the upper caste, as of what we know at this moment, has less phasic power than a Mantid Warrior or High Speaker," In'tel'lmo'o said.
He sat down, the holograms going dim as the contents were saved to the command staff's data stores.
"As of now, we know more than we did, but now we just know how much we don't know."
N'Skrek nodded. "All right. Excellent briefing," he said. He looked around. "Set our course along Nav-Int's estimate of where the next energizing construct will be."
He clacked his mandibles in amusement.
"Let's keep taking this war to them."
