2024.05.15 16:22 ghostmark2005 Frustration

March 2022 I had No specific diet, No workout plan but in and out of the gym lifting weights (badly) out since 16. I am now 34.
In Body scales usually mid week 1-2 weeks apart because generally they were de-motivating me and messing with me mentally around body fat percentage – so I use them sparingly now.
Fed up of weak deadlifting form and being a combination of weak and fat, I got a personal trainer and started my journey Mid March 2022 at approximately 79kgs and 20-22% body fat.
I started on a 4-5 day lifting program which revolved around focussing on muscle group per workout
I also did cardio – Les Mills Body Combat and Attack 1-3 times a week.
I entered a calorie deficit and yo-yo’d slightly to begin with before it became a way of life and I went from 79kgs-69/70kgs eventually over 12 months and according to in body scales, 14-15% body fat.
Going by the muscle mass indicators on Inbody I was bouncing around 33-34kg of muscle mass along with this 14-15% body fat.
My issue was at this point I was gaunt, skinny, had horrific body dysmorphia, food guilt every meal I ate, was always tired, no energy in the gym and no drive to do anything.
Everyone commented on how ill I looked and that I’d got too skinny, but I had no visible muscle, no visible ‘abs’ etc so I am convinced they were speaking from a place of not seeing me so small before but my body fat would not go any lower. So I didn’t believe them and kept pushing and made myself very ill mentally.
Eventually my wife got me out of the funk and I finally allowed myself a holiday where I just ate and did what I wanted for a week, bounced to 73kgs then back down to 70kgs when the food weight went.
I posted several times on reddit about my physique and most said start to lean bulk, I also needed a program where I could see or feel progressive overload and build some actual muscle mass.
So I moved onto a 4 day split programme, 2 upper and 2 lower, 2 strength and 2 hypertrophy (strength being 1-5 and hypertrophy being 8-10 reps). I incorporated a lot of deadlifting, conventional, sumo and RDL along with squats and bench press split across the 4 days. I saw progressive overload and I really enjoyed this style of workout.
I then started to eat 2300kcal, then when my weight didn’t go up for 3 weeks, I went up to 2500kcal then when I plateaued around 72-73kgs I pushed to 2800kcals my weight then jumped to 75kgs and my body fat was shown 16% average however my muscle mass only went up to 35kgs. I had a layer of fat but in the right lighting I could see abs and looked a bit more built.
I finally started to lift heavier (I am really, really not strong at all for a male at my weight) and my 1 rep max or deadlifting peaked at 140Kgs, squat around 100-110kgs, and I was dumbbell pressing 34kgs for 7-8 reps for the first time and 32kg dumbbells on incline for chest. That’s probably about 80kg 1rpm for bench.
From researching, the suggestion I found was 16% is where a lean bulk or bulk should stop. So, I have dropped back to 2,200 for 2 weeks now back to 2,000 once I settled again. I have dropped back to 72kgs, back to 34kg muscle mass but am still 16% body fat. I struggled to lift the 34kg dumb bells for 2 straight weeks so gave myself a de-load week, focussing on lifting the same but dropping the weight to give myself a break. Went back last night for the first time thinking I’d smash it or at least be back where I was before taking a de-load and nope! Could barely lift the dumbbells and everything has dropped.
My frustration:
If I lose weight I seem to just lose muscle mass and keep the fat,
If I gain weight it seems to just be minimal mus fat and not muscle mass
I always plateau at a particular weight on deadlifts, squats and bench which is still far, far below what any ‘normal’ guy can lift and still haven’t built muscle mass.
I was hoping to see a relatively parallel weight/BF/Muscle mass line going up, muscle mass just sticks the same but fat and body weight goes up.
I know I am opening myself up for all sorts of different opinions, but I just feel fed up and exhausted and wish I could keep it simple “eat right, lift heavy stuff, build a bit of muscle”.
I have also been tested for testosterone levels 4 years ago and it came back normal. Wondering whether I should get tested again.
Diet is 150g+ protein a day, 20+ fibre, the rest of my macros fall into place with this whether it is 2800kcal or 2000kcal.
Not sure what else to do anymore other than be annoyed but keep going, sorry sorry for long text

2024.05.15 16:22 Kirby-is-a-bee Shower thought: Priusdwelling can be quite environmentally friendly : here's why (tell me if you think I'm wrong)

Driving and idling combined, it takes more than a week for me to go through my gas tank. (Estimate: 8-9 days. 9.5 gallon fill-up.) Note that I do not idle at night - just during day when I want it (several hours a day). This is pretty "normal" - obviously depends on the situation.
CONCLUSION: it really depends on YOUR lifestyle... For example you could eat out every day and that would be more environmentally harmful (not blaming anyone, just pointing to the non reusable material). But the way I'm doing PriusDwelling is actually quite environmentally friendly. I think that my "footprint" is much less than someone who is living in an apartment or home. This is just intuition so I could be wrong.
What do you all think?
(Edit: added a point)

2024.05.15 16:19 Ryanm1102 31 [M4F] York, PA. Looking to explore Polyamory. Meet friends and make connections

I have been curious about the poly life style and wanted to explore it. I have dated one woman that was poly, but that wasn’t a good first impression. Her BF was toxic as hell. I want to meet someone that is into nerdy stuff, out going, and sees life for the positives.
I’m average build. Straight. Brown hair. Beard. Hazel eyes. 10 fingers. 10 toes. And a partridge in a pear tree. I am a nerd who likes Marvel, Star Wars, anime, etc. I love road trips, hikes, nights in, games, and being a dork. I’m straight. I’m a lead technician at an manufacturing company. I have my own apartment and car. I believe that there needs to be both a physical and emotional attraction for a couple to work.
I’m also on Snapchat and Discord. No kik or WhatsApp! Hope to meet you soon!

2024.05.15 16:08 bennitori [TOMT][Youtuber][2010s] Guy who would parody highly controversial news with skits

So I have been spending the past 20 minutes trying to search this guy, and nothing is coming up. There was this Asian guy who would make skits on highly sensitive topics. Usually stuff from the news. I remember the first video of him I saw was about a case of police brutality. An exterminator was doing his job in an apartment building. Someone called the police about him, not realizing it was an exterminator who was hired to be there. The police officer that arrives shows up and treats it like an active shooter threat, and starts giving the guy complicated instructions. The main one was telling him to cross his left foot over his right foot. But when the guy tried to comply, the police officer got mad at him for crossing the "wrong" foot. and then there was something about grabbing something, but he could grab it without taking his hands off his head and contradicting instructions. The exterminator ended up getting shot and killed by the officer. The Youtuber parodied this by having the cop in his skit tell the person at gun point to solve a Rubiks Cube, hoola hoop, and play Boop-it all at once. And then when the guy dies, the cop yells "WHY DIDN'T YOU FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTIONS???"
It is frustrating the hell out of me that I can't find this guy, no matter how much I change my search keywords.

2024.05.15 16:05 BeesAreTheWay NY State - Landlord Issue

I signed a 2 year lease in October 2020 for an apartment in Peekskill NY. After we toured the apartment, we made a list of fixes the landlord agreed to do before move in, one of which was to repair a leaking dishwasher. Upon moving in the dishwasher was not fixed and, although the landlord had contractors in and out, we didn’t have a working dishwasher until 2 months after we moved in.
In 2021 we discovered the bathtub faucet to be leaking hot water (more than just a drip). Again, the landlord was slow to get contractors and fixed the issue after 3 months. A month of the repair process was spent with a trash bag covering a hole made by the first contractor. We only have 1 bathroom.
In 2022, a window was stuck open in the middle of winter. This left an approximately 2’x2’ hole in the wall, on the 6th floor. When I reached out for help on a Thursday, my landlord initially said that someone would come by to look on Monday. I put up a fuss and eventually the super came to fix the window that same day.
Later in 2022 I re-signed the lease for an additional 3 years. The building also sent around notices that they had contracted someone to redo the buildings windows, and that landlords would need to pay for the cost of new windows they wanted. I brought this to my landlord as several of my windows need to be fixed. He was initially interested and acknowledged that the windows needed to be replaced, but soon after lost his job, and decided that he “wouldn’t redo them now”.
In January 2024, a leak above the kitchen window caused the paint and plaster above the window to start to sag. I brought this to my landlords attention. Despite debris constantly falling into my kitchen, he and the building largely did nothing until April.
A contractor was sent in in the beginning of April to remove damaged wall around and above the window. They punched out the wall around the window and made an approximately 1’x1’ hole in the ceiling above. They “mitigated” leaks by covering the hole with tape and a sheet of thin plastic, but did nothing to cover the open wall around the window.
It is now May, and nothing has been done. Whenever it rains debris falls into the kitchen and around the area I prepare food. I’ve explained this multiple times, however movement is extremely slow. Apparently someone will be here tomorrow to give the landlord an estimate.
I don’t feel safe in the apartment and I want to move out due to the landlords pattern of slowness in making repairs.
The problem is that I have no where to go until the end of this year. I can’t find an apartment near me with similar rent. I want to leave in December 2024 or January 2025, but the lease is until December 2025.
How do I move out when I can, and avoid paying for the remainder of rent for 2025? The lease says if I leave early I owe the landlord the rest of rent for the remaining lease term.

2024.05.15 16:02 MarieKateryna1953 need to fix faucet handle but no shutoff valve

hello, this is likely to be a dumb question. i live in an apartment and after looking extensively i have not been able to locate a shutoff valve for the water to my sink or my apartment. the building manager doesn’t respond to my texts or i’d ask him for help. my bathroom faucet drips terribly and i’ve identified the issue as a worn out cartridge on the cold handle. i bought the proper replacement cartridge. the problem is that i cannot seemingly turn the water off.
what would happen if i unscrewed the handle and tried to replace the cartridge without turning the water off? is there a way to do it without flooding my bathroom? thanks.

2024.05.15 15:52 TheKowzunOne How long should I save for a car down payment?

So I have a 2010 Mercury, and maintenance costs are starting to exceed the value of the car (I've got around $2.6k worth of maintenance costs that my repairman says should be done before my next inspection). It's got ~120k miles (on average I put on less than 10k per year), and I'll be lucky to trade in for more than $3k. I could probably hold onto the car for another year or two before it shits the bed on me/becomes more expensive to keep than it's worth.
New cars are still staying costly, even though used cars are going down in price. I want, at longest, a 48 month car loan, preferably a 36 month loan, and hoping my bank can get me an interest rate better than dealer (my bank has special loans for hybrids and EVs since they market themselves as an eco-friendly bank). With my salary and lack of kids, I can easily save $15k in a year (closer to $19k if I put aside extra fun money each month), but the longer I save for a car, the longer I put off saving for a house or grad school.
I still rent and will for the foreseeable future with house prices and interest rates, so I can't install a charger myself, my apartment building has no EV charging station, nor does my work, so EVs and PHEVs are out of the question. Was looking at the hybrid variants for the Kia Niro, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and Corolla Cross, and the Honda Accord, but with my tastes, every one of those is between 30k and 40k.
Should my current car shit the bed earlier than expected, I do have a $20k emergency fund that I can use part of to buy a beater, but then I pause saving money to refill the emergency fund for a couple months, which delays saving for a car or house. I could trade my car in now for a beater that will last longer, and that gives me less risk. With the interest rates from the manufacturer websites, they expect I would have a monthly payment between $380-$470 if I put down $18k between my down payment and trade in. My current salary gives me ~$5k/month on average post tax, retirement contributions, and benefits, closer to $2.3k/month after cost of living. With that much monthly income, should I settle for less? Or is saving for a year not too outrageous for a car down payment? Or should I save for even shorter for a lower down payment and weather a higher monthly payment? I'd love to take the train but live and work in car dependent suburbia with no chance of remote work in the near future.

2024.05.15 15:50 squenn active vs passive interference & responsibility - the umbrella hog

You live in an apartment building with 4 other people. In the building, there are 20 umbrellas offered for free use to the residents, no further stipulations. It's pouring out. Mark takes one, Kelly takes three (one each for herself, her boyfriend and his child), and I take the remaining 16 (I need two for friends, but the rest just offer me a clearly unnecessary but for whatever reason desirable level of personal security). This leaves Jane with none. Am I responsible for Jane getting wet?

2024.05.15 15:48 otherdsc beginner runner - wrecked knees already?

I've picked up running as a way to add some movement to my overall stagnant being, I've done this already around a year ago, but back then I went for three runs over around two weeks, ran over 3km each time, no warm up, no post run stretches, partially up hill, on rocky ground with a pace of around 6min / km and absolutely killed my knees. Last run in that session was done on already hurting knees, so I effectively killed them to the point of hurting when walking down stairs...so that was it for that adventure.
Fast forward to now and I picked it up again, this time with the following ideas:
So far I've done 5 runs, it started ok, even though I've done no exercises for around 10yrs, I feel OK during / post runs, recovery is very quick, I can even drop below 6min / km, but after run 3 I've started getting those dreaded knee pains again. It's typically on the inside of the knees, there's like a small bulge on the lower portion of the knee side and this is what's hurting, it's not crazy painful, but I can feel it. I've also started getting some pain on the top of the knee cap but that comes and goes. I've used Voltarol on it and it kind of feels fine, but after some time the pain comes back. My last run was pretty heavy pace wise as I forgot my Garmin and just floored it, managing around 5:30min / km which for me is a lot, so there is a chance that it was just too much. I'm now waiting for the pain to go away before I have another go as I don't want to repeat my last "adventure".
So the question is, what the hell? I'm not super old, 40yo, 82kg, slim build, rather healthy, overall those runs are perfect, they are short enough (11-12min), I maintain around 160-180 heart rate through out, I also don't need to stop any more which is an improvement vs early runs, so apart from the knees all seems good. Should I go see a physio? I've not done any heavy sports in the past, or anything with a lot of contact, not had any injuries either, would some leg strength training help perhaps? or is it simply not enough warm up?

2024.05.15 15:46 Key-Palpitation854 BRAND BUILDING

In the intricate process of brand building, there are numerous pitfalls that brands must navigate to maintain a positive reputation and resonate with their target audience. Avoiding these pitfalls is crucial for establishing a strong and enduring brand presence. Here are some common mistakes to avoid in brand building:
  1. **Inconsistency**: Consistency is key in brand building. Inconsistencies in messaging, visual identity, and customer experience can confuse consumers and dilute your brand's impact. Avoid mixed messages and ensure that all brand elements align cohesively to convey a clear and unified identity.
  2. **Lack of Authenticity**: Authenticity is essential for building trust and credibility with consumers. Avoid the temptation to portray your brand in a way that doesn't align with its values or mission. Authenticity resonates with consumers on a deeper level and fosters genuine connections that can lead to long-term loyalty.
  3. **Ignoring Customer Feedback**: Customer feedback is invaluable in brand building. Ignoring or dismissing feedback can lead to missed opportunities for improvement and damage to your brand's reputation. Actively listen to your customers, address their concerns, and incorporate their feedback into your brand strategy.
  4. **Overpromising and Underdelivering**: Making grand promises that your brand can't fulfill is a surefire way to erode trust and credibility. Be realistic in your brand messaging and ensure that you can deliver on the promises you make to consumers. Consistently exceeding expectations will help build a positive reputation and foster loyalty.
  5. **Ignoring Social Responsibility**: In today's socially conscious landscape, consumers expect brands to take a stand on important social and environmental issues. Ignoring social responsibility or engaging in practices that harm people or the planet can result in backlash and damage to your brand's reputation. Align your brand with causes that reflect your values and demonstrate genuine commitment to making a positive impact.
  6. **Failing to Adapt to Change**: Markets, consumer preferences, and technologies are constantly evolving. Failing to adapt to these changes can leave your brand behind the curve and irrelevant to your target audience. Stay agile and proactive in responding to shifts in the market landscape to remain competitive and resonate with consumers.
  7. **Neglecting Employee Engagement**: Your employees are ambassadors of your brand and play a crucial role in delivering on your brand promise. Neglecting employee engagement can lead to disengaged staff, poor customer service, and a negative brand image. Invest in training, communication, and empowerment to ensure that your employees are aligned with your brand values and motivated to deliver exceptional experiences.
  8. **Ignoring Brand Perception**: Perception is reality in brand building. Ignoring how your brand is perceived by consumers and stakeholders can lead to missed opportunities and reputational damage. Monitor brand sentiment, gather feedback, and proactively manage your brand's reputation to ensure that it remains positive and aligned with your objectives.
  9. **Short-Term Thinking**: Building a strong brand takes time and requires a long-term perspective. Focusing solely on short-term gains or quick fixes can undermine your brand's credibility and sustainability. Invest in building enduring relationships with consumers and prioritize long-term brand-building strategies over short-term gains.
  10. **Failure to Differentiate**: In a crowded marketplace, it's essential to differentiate your brand from competitors. Failing to establish a unique value proposition or effectively communicate what sets your brand apart can result in being lost in the noise. Identify and emphasize your brand's distinctive qualities to stand out and capture consumers' attention.
In conclusion, avoiding these common pitfalls is essential for successful brand building. By prioritizing consistency, authenticity, customer feedback, social responsibility, adaptability, employee engagement, brand perception, long-term thinking, and differentiation, brands can build strong and resilient identities that resonate with their target audience and withstand the test of time.

2024.05.15 15:41 Clerith-Enjoyer Crisis Core is Clerith coded

Hear me out, I know this will get some heat because for years this game has been horribly misunderstood by the fandom BUT inhales Crisis Core is a Clerith game. Start to finish, beginning to end, never anything else.
First of all I want to say that Nojima has his story and he doesn't deviate with it. It's consistent through and through. Like most stories, there's no purpose to building up CA as the main romance of the series only to introduce competition like CT and ZA, it detracts from that story. We see that in Rebirth the story flows only perfectly with CA and that's by design.
There's no point nor purpose to showing Aerith and Zack fall in love and spend years dating only to have them parted. This "star crossed lovers" theme alone is Clerith coded, and Clerith original, but having it in Crisis Core makes no sense especially if the intent is to then somehow reunite them. We must look at this deeper.
So we have to say, that just as Clerith's love is the most important part of the OG and trilogy, so it is the same with the Compilation. We see that Hollowed is a love song from Cloud to Aerith, which he sings even before they come together and then are taken apart. It's a foreshadowing of their love. So there is form for having CA before CA take the lead in the story.
Crisis Core is more subtle about it, but it's there. Cloud is in the background but he's searching, searching for purpose not knowing that purpose is Aerith. He pushes himself to be something and someone he's not to impress Tifa not realising that she doesn't care for him anyway, just wants a SOLDIER.
MEANWHILE, it's Zack who sets the scene. Cloud idolises Zack, they are friends yes but he's Cloud's hero in more ways than one. Zack we see is the wingman in Rebirth, helping set the two up once again, but even back in Crisis Core he does this. He tells Cloud all about this really pretty girl, he gives him the confidence and the awareness, sowing the seeds of love that would sprout in his heart and mind into a beautiful array of reunion flowers.
Zack himself flirts with many girls and such, but he sees just how much Cloud and Aerith are destined so he fights to get Cloud back to her at the end. There's proof for this, as he tells Cloud specifically that he will be his living legacy, just after his last thoughts are of Aerith. Cloud inherits the Buster Sword, the SOLDIER first class rank and the role as leading man of Aerith's affections.
Meanwhile Aerith herself is primed. Zack gave her such ammo to make her ready, teaching her the one date trick and making her more outgoing and unafraid of SOLDIER. By the time Cloud arrives she's ready for him. She's been waiting for him all this time. Zack even built the flower wagon with which she gets confidence to sell flowers and that's how she meets Cloud!
This series is so well written tbh I'm not surprised people miss the obvious. Clerith is probably the best written love story of our time, the best example of star crossed lovers built up to be together but tragically ripped apart. That love doesn't just happen during the two weeks of FF 7, but has been grown and developed through Before Crisis, Crisis Core and more. The devs wanted us to see that so they re-release the game before Rebirth to enhance the CA vibes and what did they name it? Reunion. They are hinting at the future for CA and I'm ready!

I love houses. House flipping, house hunting, crazy properties in town, gorgeous exotic vacation destinations. I think in a past life I was a real estate agent. Or a carpenter. Interior designer, actually, probably. Maybe just rich?
Doesn’t matter. I love houses, and I was gonna get myself the best digs in town.
“Best digs in town might be a liiiiittle suspicious?” Joni said as I began adjusting the filters of my favorite search: Lottery houses.
“So do you… we’re looking for a house?” Cara was leaning over my shoulder, watching as I pushed the Rooms, Cost, Square Footage, and Bathrooms options as high as I could. “Cause if you don’t even own a place, I feel like saying you’d answer my questions when we got to New Olympia is kinda a blow off.”
“Not a blow off,” I said. “This probably won’t take too too long. I just don’t want to kick anyone out of their house that, like, is a regular person living their life.”
“Kick them out?”
I paused and looked up at Cara, eyes serious. “Please. The parroting. It’s making me nervous.” Then I looked back down and began sifting through various mansions, penthouses, lake houses, villas. “For sale or for rent?”
“For rent,” Blair said immediately. She propped her head up on her chin as she watched me scroll. “Then you don’t gotta kick anyone out.”
“She’s got a point,” Christopher said. “Both from a, like, humanitarian point of view but also from a logistical point of view. Whoever’s moving needs the money pronto to buy a new house and they’re gonna constantly be dealing with banks and shit. You’d need a new lie a day just to keep them off you. But with rentals and all, first off, landlords renting out ten grand a month properties are already making bank off other units. Yeah you’re screwing them over, but not as bad. They got a buncha others. Second, you pay monthly, so you really only gotta fend them off once a month.”
My thumb jammed the “For Rent/For Sale” switch, and I cranked up the rental price. “What else are we thinking for criteria?”
“Middle of town’s a bad idea,” Joni said. “Too easy to find us.”
“We don’t have to, like, hide though,” Christopher said. “Just say you’re both out on bail. I mean, the point is to find Miller and bring him to justice, right? That’s gonna take time. There’s no place far enough out of town that we could hide in for long.”
I squinted at him, tearing my eyes away from a sexy seven bedroom manor with two pools. “What?”
He sighed, as if convinced that I was in the wrong for not understanding what fuck he just said. “Like, think about it Sammi. We’re not actually gonna be able to hide. Or if we are, it’s gonna be in an alley or some shit.” He wrinkled his nose at the same time I did. “They’re cops with detectives and shit, and they think we shot someone and broke someone else out of jail. They’re gonna find us. We’ll have to lie, not hide, to avoid being put back. So may as well be local to all the action.” With this, he pointed directly at a lofty unit in the center of town.
Hmm. He brought up a valid point, so I checked it out.
A five bedroom penthouse with three terraces giving outdoor views of the entire city. Bathrooms that put the hotel to shame. Closets the size of my old bedroom. A pool deck. Appliances with fancy brand names I only ever heard on episodes of “Dream House” and hadn’t actually realized existed in the real world. Enough bedrooms for me, Cara, and the ghosts to each sleep separately.
For a moment, the enormity of it washed over me. Not just the enormity of the house, though it was enormous, but the reality of what I could accomplish. This apartment was twenty five thousand dollars a month. I’m not entirely sure I’ve made that much money in my life. Or, okay, probably around that, but that’s my point. This was the kind of unit rich people showed off in out-of-touch blogs or escapist shows about the lifestyles of famous people. And it could literally be mine if I could play my cards right. Or not even right. Just not catastrophically wrong.
Cause I was a God. And for the first time since becoming a God, I was using my abilities, my status, my familiars and shit to do something cool. Not rob a TechShack of some earpods or break in or out of a hospital.
This was a big yield.
As I had my little epiphany, Cara had taken over scrolling my phone, much to the relief of my ghosts, who’d started grumbling about the static screen while I zoned out.
“Okay.” Cara looked at me. “I’m not gonna ask any of the questions you know I want to ask, cause that’ll just piss you off.” Thank God she was learning. “So we’ll skip that for now and ask the really important question. How are you gonna get your hands on this place?”

Step 1 was to get to the place, which kinda sucked, given we were still at Pizza Dogs. It just wasn’t a very cool start to the coolest scheme I’d ever pulled off. Luckily Pizza Dogs closed at 9, so a solid number of people were leaving the restaurant. I was able to wave down a waitress who’d just checked off of her shift and convince her she was a taxi driver.
“You’re really loving this whole taxiing thing, huh?” Christopher said.
“At least she’s not talking like a robot trying to use slang.” I grit my teeth at the memory of Cops Cop and Taxi Service.
“No, you just told her she was mute.” Blair stuck her lip out. “That’s mean, Sammi.”
“I told her she couldn’t talk. That’s different.” I gave Cara a weak smile, but she hadn’t even commented on my ghost talking. She just buried her face in her hands. See? Learning.
Step 2 was gonna be actually getting in the unit. The listing on HouzeHunting didn’t exactly have the name of the landlord on it, so I was gonna have to get creative getting in touch with them. What it did have was ‘24 hour doorman service,’ which meant getting in would be easy peasy.
Finally we pulled up to the address I’d given our driver. 1732 East Windham Street. She leaned out the window, looking up the seventy story building.
“It’s totally appropriate for you to talk now,” I said as I scrambled out, towing Cara with me. No sense in actually making her mute for life.
The woman nodded. “You, uh, live here or visiting? If you don’t mind me asking.”
I flipped my wad of black hair over my shoulder, wincing at how singularly it moved. I shoulda combed it after my bath yesterday.
“Live here, obviously.” I gave a rich person kinda snort, nose in the air and all.
“Huh.” She looked back at me, rubbing the back of her neck as if it was sore from craning up so high. “But you needed a taxi to get here?”
“Uh.” Rich people used taxis, right? On the ladder from Sammi to Bill Gates, someone had to use them, and if I couldn’t afford a taxi normally, then the typical passenger must exist somewhere above me. “My fancy personal car got towed cause I was parking it in a fire lane.”
The woman didn’t look convinced. Not that she thought I was lying, but she still looked at me like I was dumb as dirt. “You don’t have, like, a personal driver?”
I cocked my head at her, trying to mirror Joni’s sassy tilt but probably just looking confused. “Are you offering?”
Her lips parted, and I could see her brain chewing on this question. “What do you… wait, are you being serious?”
Was I? Suddenly I wasn’t sure. Having a personal chauffeur could be kinda great. Someone always available to text or call when I needed a ride so I wouldn’t have to keep remembering where I left my car. Besides, driving made me nervous. I’d never been a particularly bad driver, no prior accidents, never really hit anything in the past, unless we’re counting bumper cars. Which we’re not, cause I’m a menace in bumper cars. But that’s like the point.
Or, no, the point was, I wanted to minimize driving, and this woman could be key. Of course, I knew nothing about her. What if she had a family at home and I told a too strong lie and she never saw them again?
But then, she wouldn’t be offering if she wasn’t serious, right? Sure I’d lied and told her she was a taxi driver, but the average every day taxi driver didn’t just ditch their families to be rich people’s chauffeur’s.
“Uh. Yeah.” I looked at the ghosts. Two thumbs up from Christopher, one from Blair, and two thumbs down from Joni. That was a total of one thumbs up, if my math was right. “Yeah, I pay ten thousand a month.” We could figure that out later.
The woman’s eyes shot open. “Okay, you’re actually fucking with me. You’re actually offering to hire me for ten thousand a month.”
I nodded. “Yeah. And you can… I mean, if you got your own place, you can stay there obviously but you could also stay in one of my bedrooms. I got some extra ones I was gonna give to the gho–uh, dogs. But I don’t have dogs, so you were next on the list. Well, a chauffeur was next on the list. But also if you’ve got–do you have a family?”
Each of my statements plunked out of my mouth like gumballs out of a broken candy machine. But she just kept nodding like this was a normal proposal.
“I mean, I had a boyfriend.” Her face flushed crimson. “Kinda embarrassing to say at my age. Thought we were–” She took a deep breath. “Thought he was the one. I’m not gonna say I was looking to have kids or anything, so I suppose age doesn’t matter, but that doesn’t mean I really want to start over. Five years wasted is all, and at my age, the well starts to dry up a bit. People look at you a bit…” She blinked. “I’m sorry, that’s not really what you asked, was it.”
It wasn’t entirely, but I was kinda hooked on the story now. “Yeah it was,” I said. “It was the first question in the interview, and you’re nailing it. Uh, you actually already passed the first round. Let’s take the rest inside.”
The woman let out a shaky breath and smoothed her frizzled hair. “Right, of course. Thank you so much!”
Cara had, thank God, kept her mouth shut this whole interview process, so I just towed my newly formed posse towards the doorman.
“My key got lost,” I said confidently and too quickly, noticing way late that there weren’t any visible keyholes anywhere on the door. “Uh…” I looked nervously at the ghosts.
“Just tell him someone said he should let you in,” Joni said.
“Yeah.” Blair smiled. “Carl from management.”
“No–”
“Carl from management said you should let me in,” I said, bowling over Joni’s protests. “I own that top penthouse suite. Suite 72. The one for rent. Or, not for rent cause I’m renting it now. And I called earlier because my key is broken and Carl your manager said–”
I stopped finally because the doorman had long since stopped frowning perplexedly at me and had just tapped his card against the door.
“Haha,” I said, verbalizing the laugh a little too hard. “Look at me, talking too much as always.”
He frowned again, but nodded nonetheless, before holding the door open for me. “Here you are.”
“Thank you so much,” I said, stepping in like a real fancy lady. “I’ve got it from here.”
And, because I was stupid and always spoke without thinking, he nodded and shut the door behind me.
So technically Step 2 ‘get in’ was done, but it was like, barely done. Like when your mom says ‘go to your room’ so you sit in the doorway. Cause I wasn’t really close to my new apartment yet, which meant a new step on the list. Step 3? Get into New Olympia.
Somehow a little sneaky ‘Step 3b, interview your new chauffeur’ had snuck on the list too, but that would be easy to finish once I got to the actual unit.
It was literally impossible to keep my jaw in its socket as we walked through the lobby. I was actually straight up speechless at how fancy it all was. There was a bar in the lobby, like this was some hotel! Given my experience with rich people things, it was either totally free or thirty bucks a glass. Still, it was pricey enough that I should probably have been charged just for looking at it. Even Cara and the driver had their mouths gaping open as they looked around, taking in the mirror shiny marbely floors and columns.
I closed my eyes, taking in a deep breath, and really tried to capture this moment of peace and quiet inside the lobby of my new home.
“Blair stop humming, they’ll be able to hear you.”
“I’m using my regular humming, not my banshee humming.”
“My bad, shoulda clarified. I’m able to hear you, and you’re annoying me.”
“Joni, why are you always so mean.”
“She’s, like, kinda got a point. You need to get that stick out of your ass.”
“I’ll get the stick out of my ass when Blair stops humming.”
“Bro, it’s totally more than the humming, and you know it.”
“Is singing okay?”
“No.”
“What about–”
“Why don’t you just whistle, Blair?”
“That’s not nice. You know I can’t whistle.”
“Kinda my point.”
“Hey, be nice to Blair, Joni.”
Peace and quiet were overrated anyway. We were here for schemes.
My eyelids snapped open. In front of me was a big old reddish wood desk. The sign on it said “Main desk, open 7AM to 9 PM.” Next to it was another, more temporary sign, “Partial Service After Hours. Ring Bell For Assisance.”
My eyes drifted hungrily to the shiny golden bell. It was the kind you see in movies and shows, you press down a few times to summon the waiter or whoever sits behind the desk.
“Just once, Sammi,” Joni said, already reading my mind. “You ring it once.”
“But Joni,” I whispered, hand hovering over it, “I’m a God.”
DING DING DING DING DING DING DING
Seven was overkill. The man was there after the first two rings. But I couldn’t stop. It was too satisfying.
He regarded me with pained eyes. “Ma’am, you didn’t have to ring it that many times.”
“I didn’t,” I said confidently. And just like that, the pained look vanished. He didn’t look comfortable though, probably because I didn’t look like I should be there. Time to fix that.
I jutted my chin out. “Is there, like, a master key to all the elevators and units you can give me.”
The guy blinked rapidly. “I’m… sorry, you want what?”
“Lies, Sammi. That was a request!”
This is why we needed Joni and the stick up her ass.
“Uh.”
“Tell him that… I don’t know, someone from management said you could borrow a skeleton key.”
I smiled. “Carl from management told me I could have a skeleton key. A, you know, a key that opens all the doors.” I gave Joni a panicked glance.
She motioned her finger in a repeating loop and mouthed ‘go on.’
“And.” I swallowed. “You said you would give us one.”
The concierge sighed. “I know. I know. I just.” He ran a hand through his hair. “Carl doesn’t manage my department, so if this isn’t the right call, Sandy’s gonna have my head.”
I eyed the ghosts nervously. The lie had worked but it didn’t seem to fully convince him. “Sandy said…”
“Keep it simple,” Joni hissed.
“...that you would give me a key to let me in?”
“Right, please hold a moment, it’s almost done transferring.” The concierge paused and looked at a key card on his desk. He squinted before picking it up and beeping it against a little card pad. It flashed red. “I’m sorry,” he said. “The transfer didn’t go through right. One moment please.” Then he typed on his computer for a few very long minutes while Cara, the driver, and I all stood frozen by the elevator. After several breath-holding moments of silence (yeah, now the ghosts decide to shut up) he tapped the card again and it flashed green. “There we go.”
I let out a long breath before scuttling over to pick up my card. “Thank you!” I said, a cheery forced grin on my face. “Thank you so much! Remember, this came from, uh, Sandy’s boss, and she told you not to tell Sandy, so keep it zipped!”
He mimed zipping his lips as I waved again before rushing to the elevator.
Soon we were zooming up dozens and dozens of levels as my breathing came more and more naturally. Even the elevator was fancy. All golden mirrors, which Blair was staring at, disappointed that she couldn’t see her reflection in them.
There was no one on the seventy second story and ther was only one door, at the end of a gleaming hardwood hallway. My black boots clomped awkwardly as I escorted the driver–still in a bright orange shirt with a barking dog and a slice of pizza on it–and Cara–still in an orange jumpsuit–towards the door at the end.
Once I got there, I tapped my card, and we were in.
I don’t really have good words to describe the place. Huge, for one. Empty for another. Those were the two big ones. I could have gawked at it all, but I was a little tired of gawking, so I filed away ‘tour my house and get it fitted out’ for later. Besides, I had all my gear and shit still in my car… somewhere. I’d get it up here eventually and then the real decorating could start.
But there was a first step. Well two first steps. Okay, technically only one could be the first step, so we’ll do that first.
I waved Cara to join me in one of the bedrooms.
“I’ll finish your interview in like, fifteen minutes,” I said to the driver. She nodded.
“Okay,” I said, closing the door behind me and plopping down on the ground.
Cara stood awkwardly, eyeing the big ass empty room with a big ass empty bathroom off to the side. “Okay,” she said, still standing. “Do I need to–”
“No no, I said I would…” I trailed off, lips pursed and confused. “You wanted… Or… I was gonna tell you–”
“Oh shit yeah.” Now suddenly Cara was on the floor across from me, leaning in. “You’re telling me what the fuck is going on.”
My breath rushed out in a long woosh as I contemplated how to start this. Joni had made a snarky comment at one point like ‘pushing this off won’t make it easier’ and I’d responded with a ‘I’ll come up with a plan while I delay’ which of course I hadn’t, and now I was angry cause Joni was right.
“So the problem is,” I said, starting slowly. “Everything I tell you, you’ll believe.”
“Obviously,” Cara said, believing me instantly.
“But no one else but me knows what’s going on. So I can’t help but…” I trailed off again, noticing Cara nodding animatedly. This wasn’t working. I wanted her to believe me cause she fully understood and accepted my story, not cause of magic. But to get that, I couldn’t be the one to tell her, and the only other people who knew about my godliness were the ghosts and–
I smacked myself on the face. Sammi, you’re a genius. An actual, mensa accredited whiz kid.
“Blair,” I said, smiling. “I think I’ll offload this to you.”
Blair frowned, scrunching her nose up for a moment, before pointing at herself. “Me?”
I nodded confidently. Blair knew everything but lacked the Verity Tongue. This would be a sinch.
“Cara, how do you feel about a little ghost story?” I shivered a bit, getting goosebumps at my own words. Now that lead-in was brilliant. ‘A little ghost story’, who came up with that? I was getting smarter by the minute.
“Oooooooooooooh.” Blair zoomed around the room, and Cara leapt to her feet.
“What the fuck?”
“Bewaaaaare moooooortal,” Blair droned, pitching her voice low. “For the story you’re about to hear is both dreadful and awwwwwful. Fear for your soul for those who hear this story are cursed and will find themselves in an early–”
“Blair!” I shouted. “Stop that. What the fuck? Literally not like that. Like literally anything but that. You need to start with–”
“Yo, Sammi, dawg, chill.” Christopher patted my back. “We’ll help her out.”
“Yeah, you don’t want to taint the story with your god powers,” Joni said. “We’ll sort Blair. You interview the pizza waitress.”
Suddenly my genius felt like the opposite of genius. Yeah, delegation was important, but I did want to hear what the ghosts were telling Cara. Didn’t I need to know? What if they told her something totally wrong and stupid? Or what if they said something mean? Like what if they really played up the part about my reckless speeding? What if they lied about something? Made me look incompetent.
I opened my mouth to protest, but Christopher just gave me an icy pat again.
“Look, you’re gonna jump in to correct something we say, and it’s just gonna fuck up Cara.” He gave me a serious look, one of the most serious looks he’d given me since this whole ordeal. Which was honestly kinda stupid cause of all the times to pull out there ‘seriously, Sammi’ face, he was picking now? Was this really the right time for this? “Seriously, Sammi. We got this.”
I didn’t believe him at all, but they were absolutely right about me likely fucking this up with my motor mouth. No way was I sitting still while Joni made snarky comments about me, like, eating gross bagels or telling cops to steal poop.
“All right,” I said. “Come out when you’re done. Or if you need hands at all. Like if she passes out and you need to check for a pulse.”
“Are you talking to me?” Cara said.
“No. I’m talking to the ghosts.” And with that I closed the door.
Looks like Sammi's got a house! And maybe a minion or two on top of her familiars. Let's see how Cara takes all of this...

2024.05.15 15:26 rosemaryyup NYC Break-In… Landlord wants to raise rent

My friends live on the 4th floor of a 2Bdr apartment in Chelsea. About 6 months ago, an unwell man broke in to the building (poor locks, no security), walked up to the roof from the inside, then climbed the fire escape from the roof into their apartment. My friend came home to a naked man who had defecated / urinated all over their bedding, drank all their liquor, and destroyed a few other things. He also violently resisted arrest when the police came. The landlord did not inform any other residents about what happened. They are now trying to raise their rent by $250 a month for the lease renewal. Any advice? Are there tenancy advocacy groups in NYC that can provide them guidance as to how to keep or reduce their current rent given what happened? TIA

2024.05.15 15:21 Grand-Management-720 My inexplicably disgusting work bathrooms.

I work in an office that is located on the first floor of a residential building in a city. Unfortunately for whatever reason, the people who made this part of the building an office space did not think we needed our own restrooms. So in order to use the restroom we have to leave our office space, walk across the lobby through the gym, into the pool room and use one of the two single-stall gender neutral pool bathrooms there.
Now this is obviously annoying but wouldn't be that much of an issue except it means sharing these restrooms with whoever has access to the gym/pool area. Though these doors are kept locked and are only supposed to be used by people who have a key, I wonder about what type of people are let in there. The bathrooms also have a shower and I think sometimes this attracts people who may not have access to showers themselves as the hand soap had often gone missing and been found in the shower or sometimes just disappeared altogether. Also these bathrooms are open to whatever service men are working on the building as they are the only public restrooms in the building. This seems callous but I wish this weren't the case as they track in dirt, soil, rubble, dust and leave it all over all the surfaces in the restroom including the toilet seat (how they manage to get visible dirt on their bare asses enough to leave some behind I will never know). Also for whatever reason, very often, these men stink. And seeing as the bathrooms are gender neutral and they help themselves to both, there is no way to escape the odors of their BO (yes it is that strong sometimes) cigarettes, or excrement that they leave behind. Pretty sure I smelled meth after the carpet replacement guy left the bathroom one time.
This is just the beginning though. For some reason I have encountered grosser things in the supposedly "private" restrooms than I have in any other public restroom in my life, including feces smeared along the wall by the door, well out of the stall itself. Most recently this morning I walk into the stall to find the toilet full of vomit. Now I feel we may have a serial non-flusher who uses this restroom regularly as it is not uncommon to find feces or urine left behind (mysteriously without toilet paper) but a toilet full of vomit is the first.
I have emetophobia and mild contamination OCD as a result, so this was particularly distressing for me. And though I have sanitized my self and my office I still can't bring myself to eat my breakfast. It doesn't help that the water in the bathroom sinks never get any hotter than lukewarm, and once again, the soap is missing, so I know no thorough hand-washing occurred.
The apartments in this building are relatively expensive, more than I could afford on my $50K/year salary. So I doubt its a tenant doing these things.
I am just sick of this bathroom situation. I love my job but I am SO tired of walking into the bathroom with trepidation about what biohazard I might have to encounter.
