2024.05.14 09:47 rennn10 Pregnancy and maternity leave

Hi all,
I am a current M3 and my partner and I are considering trying to conceive early next year. This would mean I would (hopefully) be pregnant during M4 and give birth at the end of 2025 or early 2026. Assuming I don't need to take time off during medical school - how does maternity/annual/unpaid leave early on during internship work? I've heard that annual leave is usually taken in blocks of multiple weeks at a time for rostering reasons. Does this mean that they would make accommodations such as allowing me to take my annual leave in the first weeks of internship to extend my time off with a newborn? Or is that wishful thinking? Any advice appreciated :)
ETA: I will be interning in Queensland

2024.05.14 06:39 AtengInLateTwenties I quit my pgi-ship. How would you handle with this kind of situation in the toxic hospital culture in the Philippines?

Hi, I am 29, F. There was this incident that happened to me during my 1st week of my PGIship last year. It has already been months well almost a year na patapos naman na ang PGI-ship for this year but i still feel like it happened to me yesterday. Parang ang fresh pa din kasi until now di pa din ako maka move on.
Meron akong isang resident from that department na he was swearing at me na i felt so little, dumb, worthless human being that it made me quit my internship during the first week dahil lang sa hindi na release agad sa laboratory ang results of that patient na pina mukha nya talaga sa akin na it was all fault kasi napagalitan din sya sa senior nya. Parang di nya nakita na ako na lahat gumawa, from carrying out the orders, extracting the blood, doing other procedures such as iv insertion, inserting catheter, ngt at pag hatid pa sa specimens sa lab and pag punta pa sa ibang department dahil sa interdepartmental referrals, etc., with that same patient na mag isa ko lang ginawa lahat kasi sa sobrang busy pag intern ka sa public hospital ikaw na talaga ang gagawa sa lahat all around kana. To think he was a fresh resi. Alam sana nya na mahirap ang gawain ng pgi parang di naman sya kakagaling lang dun.
As we all know naman, grabe naman talaga ang work load sa mga public hospitals kaya lang di ko lang yata kaya ang ganung pangyayari. I am known to have this very strong personality, cool lang na i can work grace under pressure during my clerkship kaya it shocked my parents and friends when they found out that i quit instantly.
I cried so hard that day kahit until now kasi parang di na nagtutugma ang mga pangyayari sa buhay ko.
I tried to apply in other hospitals kaya lang wala ng available slots in the whole ph. Tried for mid-year kaya lang dun lang na hospital ang may available. I am so traumatized na ayaw ko nang balikan pa.
Now, my problem is nag apply ulit ako for this August 2024 internship, kaya lang di pa ako natatanggap sa mga private hospitals.
Why is this being normalized ang ganitong pangyayari sa hospital?
Nagkaka anxiety ako after that, i was taking medications to help me sleep di lang typical sleeping pills, anti anxiety drug na ang iniinom ko and had to seek psych pa nga. Sa totoo lang di ko na alam gagawin ko sa buhay.
Haha i am already 29, wala pang narating sa buhay, na delayed pa sa PGIship dahil dito.
Please advise naman mga docs. Thank you.

2024.05.14 05:42 estavezbesarte Still can't believe Princeton is one of my transfer options, it feels like a pipe dream

12 year old me didn't think I would pass high school, flee the ghetto and pursue my goals of medical school I would dream of every single night. Lots of twists and turns throughout the journey and the news isn't as fresh as it was a few days ago, but I'm still elated.
Anyhow, I'm facing a college decision between here, John's Hopkins, UChicago and Berkeley. This is definitely not a decision I ever expected to face but the opportunities are now clear. The medical school dream pivoted and I chose Chemistry/Chemical Biolgy everywhere, perhaps a double Materials Engineering & Statistcs minor. Hope to delve further into Bio-Materials Theory and research, a PhD in Chemistry, one day work deep into the commercialization and entrepreneurship of (Nano)materials in health/medical applications.
I do think I've narrowed it down to here and Berkeley, I live in California so Berkeley would be the only college I can visit next week. What can I expect in terms of research, internships opportunities? But also social opportunities to just connect and develop lasting relationships with my new peers. A bit timid I won't have enough time given the 2 year window, which is where I feel Berkeley is much more transfer-friendly and understanding, but my foresight could be short-sighted in that context. I would love second set of ears!

2024.05.14 05:27 Pure-Bumblebee8941 Looking for summer housing 2024

Hello everyone, I am doing an internship at Yale this summer. I am having trouble finding rooms on Facebook marketplace and other websites. I reached out to a lot of people and most of them are scammers. So I thought Reddit maybe a good place.
I am looking for a 1bed/1bath room. The maximum I am willing to pay is $1200. It would be very preferable in the room is close to the Yale medical school. I want the room from June 7th to August 7th.
If u have any available rooms then please reach out. Thank you

2024.05.14 05:02 cool06aj UF vs VT premed

I was accepted to the University of Florida, Gainesville and Virginia Polytechnic Institute of technology (Virginia tech). For both colleges I applied as a biology major and am heavily debating between the two for premed. I know for premed students gpa and extracurriculars are really important and I know that UF has a better hospital system for internships and shadowing in comparison to VT. I don’t really know anything abt how easy it is to get a 4.0 gpa in either school but I know that is also an important factor in deciding which college to go to when you are planning to go to medical school. For a little insight I’m not sure what I want to specialize in just yet but orthopedic surgery is a career I would be willing to commit to. As decision day is coming near I’m having a hard time deciding between the two. I am a Virginia resident so vt is less expensive than UF by like 5k but I am willing to pay the price if it’s better academic wise. Please let me know if you have any opinions or insight as to which college I should pick facs a premed student.

2024.05.14 01:36 mojitojenkins Is it worth it to do research if I plan on going into industry?

I am a graduating senior who has no internship experience. I really dropped the ball and honestly have never even done a leetcode question. I had some significant medical issues that caused me to take two years off of school, and it was a big enough challenge adapting when I returned.
As of right now, my only option that I have for this summer is an unpaid research position in a robotics lab. I would get experience working on computer vision/ML and also some hands on experience working with 3D printing and mechanical stuff if I'm interested. If I make significant contributions, they are happy to put my name on the paper they will be publishing at the end of the summer.
My concern is that it will take up a lot of time and I have heard that research is only useful if you are trying to go to grad school. If I didn't take the research position, I would probably spend the summer grinding leetcode and sending out applications. Will doing research just delay my preparation for interviews and add nothing to my resume?

Hi ! Can someone work on a side-business or virtually during medical internship to earn money ?
I think so - NO .
What are your opinions/views? Is there a rule that states the same?
I am aware that one cannot work outside during residency, to make money. But what about internship ?

2024.05.14 00:49 somehowmadeit27 Does my undergrad school truly matter that much?

Hey! I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but, I’m deciding between Brown and Duke for BME. I rejected JHU BME already, so I personally don’t care about rankings, and I’m pretty in love with Brown, but, my family isn’t proud of that decision. I’m a FGLI and since I’m for sure going to do grad school they’re really pressuring me into Duke.
Would going to Brown REALLY honestly set me back that much further than Duke? I get the internships and the area of Chapel hill and such are great, but they’re both elite institutions.
I have nothing to debate against them with since ranking wise Brown appears lower and that’s what they’re pretty much going off of.
I just want a general answer on whether it’ll really be any different. I’ve done amazing internships in my home city and because of this at both institutions I have internships already lined up through the medical company I’ve been interning with.
Please let me know!

2024.05.13 21:11 Existing-Lynx7739 Choosing between Drexel BSMD/Case Western/ NSU BSMD

Hello! I’m a senior right now in high school. I want to become a doctor and go into premed, but I also know that getting into a medical school from college can be very difficult so I applied to some BSMDs.
If any of you have any advice, experience, or any comments, please let me know.
Right now I am choosing between the Drexel BSMD, UIUC for premed, and the NSU BSMD.
Drexel BSMD:
Pros:
- Guaranteed spot in med school
- In the city, so a lot of opportunities
- I got around 30-40K off in scholarships per year, so around 50 K per year.
- I feel like they are very supportive to students, for opportunities and support
- Undergrad is pretty big, so social life won’t be limited to just pre meds
- DUCOM has good residency match, around 96 percent
- Drexel is ranked #88 best SOM for research, and #90 for primary care

Cons:
- Quarter system is said to be very difficult and time consuming/stressful
-Kind of expensive at 50K per year
- GPA is kind of high compared to other programs at 3.6
-MCAT is also high at 513, but we are given time during a 6 month co-op to study for the MCAT
-Far away from home
- I won’t be able to apply to other medical schools while in the program
-Doesn‘t have its own campus
UIUC:
Pros:
- Closer to my house and family
- Cheaper, In-State tuition
- Have a lot of friends already going, so will know people
-Large undergraduate population

Cons:
-No guaranteed spot in school
-Doesn‘t have a good pre-med program
-Not super supportive for premed students
NSU BSMD:
Pros:
- Guaranteed Spot in the Kiran C. Patel SOM
- Close with my brother, who is in the NSU BSDO
- Good weather, safe campus
-Can apply to other medical schools while in the program
-Has a 99% graduate match rate into graduate medical education (GME) programs
-Small campus and classroom size will make it easier to acquire rec letters from teachers
- Isn’t as expensive as Drexel

Cons:
- Small classroom and undergraduate size isn’t something I really like
- BSMD program is very new, the first year
- Apparently very hard to find medical opportunities (research, internships, etc.)
- School of Medicine is pretty new, ranked #118-130 for research, and #112-123 for primary care
-Isn’t an established program

I was also considering Case Western University for premed, but I decided that I wouldn’t go, because of the competition for premed, the lack of a guaranteed spot in a medical school, and because I didn’t get any scholarships. If you have any comments about Case Western, please let me know as well.

2024.05.13 20:04 KevinIsOver9000 Ordering vaccines

Ok so I was transferred to a new pharmacy where no one has ever ordered vaccines. I’ve ordered drugs but never vaccines.
Brand new pharmacy manager right out of internship, staff pharmacist is on medical LOA. So no one really knows
I ordered vaccines like I do meds (through OrderInsites. If I remember, they dont arrive with McKesson or Warehouse, they get delivered to the store in Receiving, then get brought up to the pharmacy. I ordered vaccines over the weekend and nothing has arrived today. Makes me anxious that they haven’t arrived yet. Is What I described the normal procedure? Or did I miss something

2024.05.13 15:06 No_Cheesecake_6866 Requesting time off from new internship

I am starting a new internship next week. The internship is a 10-wk program, but I was able to have it extended to 11 wks so I could start a week earlier.
I have a week long (a Mon thru Fri) vacation in the beginning of July that I would like to request time off for. In my interviews for this job, one of the directors I'd be working under mentioned they would try to accommodate any time off I need as they understand I'm still a college student, the summer is my "off" time, etc., so they at least seem welcoming of time off requests. I obviously don't receive any PTO, so it'd be unpaid time off.
Given I start in a week and the vacation plans have been set (I have been dealing with various medical issues the past several months, but now that I am doing better, I know I can go if all other factors work out), should I send my time off request to the company as soon as possible? Should I wait until I actually start? I'm fearful I didn't let them know at the ideal time already or given that the time off is 5 days, that it'll be too much to accommodate.
Thank you!

2024.05.13 12:28 Anhavij Urgent Help Needed: 19-Year-Old Student Facing Homelessness Seeks Advice

Hey there, TwoX community,
I hope this message finds its way to some compassionate souls who can lend an ear and maybe offer some advice. I'm a 19-year-old female student, currently enrolled in my first year of BSc Zoology. Despite attending one of the top colleges in my state, finding paid internships has been a Herculean task.
I come from a family facing severe financial hardships. My father, in his late 50s, has been unemployed since 2019, and my mother, a schoolteacher, struggles to make ends meet with a meager salary, which she uses to support our extended family, including two sets of dependent, ill grandparents. To add to our burden, my mother battles diabetes, blood pressure, and hypertension.
We're currently grappling with a significant rent loan for our flat and impending homelessness due to the exorbitant rent prices. With my semester ending soon, I'm desperately seeking employment opportunities to support my family by working from home or something similar.
I've considered part-time work at places like McDonald's or Starbucks, but the low pay and long hours are daunting. I'm not skilled in coding or design, and as an average student, I'm feeling lost and confused about my options.
If anyone has suggestions for alternative employment or online opportunities, particularly in content writing or similar fields where I could earn around 15k a month, I'd be immensely grateful. My primary goal is to alleviate my family's financial strain, especially covering medical expenses.
Additionally, I'm terrified to send my CV around, fearing potential exploitation or misuse of my information, especially considering the harassment I've faced in my DMs. It's distressing to encounter individuals seeking to prey on me, even in this vulnerable situation, soliciting inappropriate requests like asking for nudes in exchange for money and issuing threats to leak my IP address if I refuse.
Every day feels like a battle, and my health is suffering under the weight of stress and worry. My parents are already overwhelmed, with my mother juggling her job and supporting our family, even in the face of personal tragedy.
I don't seek luxuries; I just want to help provide for our basic necessities. It pains me deeply that I feel powerless in this situation. My mother, on a single teacher's salary of 35k, shoulders the burden of supporting me, my sister, my father, and her parents, despite their own outstanding loans.
This is the only mother's day gift she would want. She never asks for anything She never buys anything for herself
I'm reaching out with a heavy heart, hoping someone out there can offer guidance or support during this incredibly trying time. Thank you for reading and, hopefully, responding.
I appreciate any guidance or support offered, as I'm feeling quite isolated in this struggle. Thank you for taking the time to read till the end.
