2024.05.13 17:48 BendJumpy2268 Loved Forbidden West, time for Feedback/Criticism #1

I've had a great time with Forbidden West, not as great as Zero Dawn thou still great.
Ive had no next to no problem with the story other than it felt too short and I wanted MORE. Which is a weird point of criticism "there wasn't enough of it" is a half handed Praise. It could probably be around 1000h of play time and I would still be like "thats it?"
What I want to talk about first is crafting. I might get a little more negative than first intended, I just wish you keep in mind, I still loved the game. This stuff just urks me so hard, I want it to be better than it is.
Intro Big minus for me is how you obtain weapons and the "crafting" system if you can actually call it that. With the exception of one Quen NPC, all of them hand you air and you pocked that air into Aloys buttocks, then you suddenly have a new weapon in your inventory. That's a minor nitpick but it correlates to the following stuff. When I learned there is a new crafting system I was ecstatic. I imagined myself taking down machines and then using their parts to build my own weapons, and then modify them with other machine parts. imagine "Charger thigh bones" being good early game bow limbs with a Borrower Soundshell being a good Grip. Then later, yeah this Machine part is a better bow limb, oh wow these machine parts give a bow overdraw, I'll build it into my Sharpshooter! Oh This cable I use as a bow string is really silent after release! I bet it would be great for a more stealthy approach!
Example "Thank you for your help Aloy, I'm a poor peasant and don't have a lot to give you, especially not a Weapon worth hundreds or over a thousand shards! But take this schematic of a Bolt blaster, there are ways to modify them! I bet other Oseram have more blueprints for you!"
Put the crafting into crafter Aloy is supposed to be a good crafter yet she never crafts anything other than 4 quest items. Hunting grounds could still award medals you can trade in for legendary Weapon components. Traders could still sell weapon components that you can't get in the wild so they can keep them if they absolutely want them. I wholeheartedly believe that this execution would be 100% better than the one now.Imagine after you decide which parts you want to use to build a weapon you get a short animation of Aloy assembling it a la Monster Hunter Cat Kitchen.
Current system Rant It sucks that first Aloy breathes in a Thunderjaw Tail, the size of an SUV in less than 0,01 seconds, 5 TIMES. And them she can just click... hold... woopdidoo 15% dmg increase against flying targets! OW MWAY GAWD 15% MORE ARIAL... you get what I mean.
Detachment mechanic Even the mechanic to have to shoot of parts otherwise they get destroyed. How does that make sense? Why does a Frostclaw Sack webbing stay intact after I destroy the machine, when it FALLS ON IT yet a tail hammer that can pulverize whole rock formation pops like a soap bubble the second the thing attached to it falls to 0 HP? I don't think I've ever clicked on anything faster than than the "easy loot" toggle after I found it. If you ask me, NOT damaging a weak spot, to "HARVEST" and USE it later makes "a little" more sense and is actually MUCH HARDER if your intend is to take down the machine not, break of something and scurry away like a cockroach. Like, if I want to use the fur of some game for a mantle. I will try not to pierce the parts of the fur I need. Cavemen understood that. I can't shake the feeling that this "crafting" was a corporate shortcut to say "See? we made a crafting system! Just like you wanted us to! Isn't it great!" While counting the money they saved on an actual crafting system.
More Examples Just like with with armor. This Frostclaw webbing has great insulation properties I bet I could use it in an armor to protect myself from the cold.
Wow these Shell snapper Armor plates are incredibly sturdy! I wonder if I can make some armor pieces out of it, That protect me from melee attacks.
Glint Hawks! I could take them down! Their Wing plates are super light. Armor made out of them might give me better movability.
I need more protection against arrows if I want to fight these "generic Bad guys" maybe if I can find a Long leg and use its soundsack webbing as an piercing resistant armor lining! (just an example)
A Thunderjaw! It's tail would be a great addition to a fortress wall, to bad it probably weighs 20-30 times my weight and I could never move it. But it's armor plating is among the strongest amongst the machines. I BET THAT COULD BE USED for something.
Gamification I get that a lot of this is gamified for the sake of gamification. It's just feels like lazy and bad gamification. I will still aim for weak spots to take down a machine, even if I don't have to break it off.
Corporate Rant If it is about budget then I'd recommend to move the budget of the "Discount Zelda Puzzle Division" to where it is more useful. And don't get me started on the pull caster ripping steal-beams out of concrete debris.
After word While I the changes to combat where exceptionally well implemented and think almost all of the weapons are awesome, except maybe the traps, and trip caster (the shield one is cool and all but A it makes the shield perk useless and B I really don't understand what it is for, since Rebels always just walk through it to wack me with sticks. Which is kinda understandable if I'm honest.) The crafting they implemented is not very good, lacks innovation and actual effort/care. I will pray to the Universe that someone at Guerilla will read this and be like;
"That arrogant prick might actually have a point"
Until the next parts where I will rip out the pull casters major flaw, point out Aloy is not a muscle head, and gush over the NPCs and my beloved brother in Arm Kotallo (new favourite NPC)
Toodles \n/
I hope I don't get crucified like in the last reddit I did this...

2024.05.13 17:33 UsedConsideration156 Looking for Guidance: Best Practices for Creating a Java SOAP Client - Any Tips or Tricks?

I am uisng a SOAP API that returns some customer data. I need to create a java client application to call this SOAP API. I was able to invoke this using Soap ui for the purpose of testing. Now I want to invoke this programatically using Java. When connecting to the API using Soap UI below steps are followed: - Added a key store providing a certificate in .pfx format and a password. - Created outgoing WS security configurations with following configurations - Timestamp with 30000 as the Time to live value and set the precision of timestamp to miliseconds. - Signature configurations: - Keystore: added keystore in the above step. - Alias: 1 - password: ***** - Key Identifier type: Binary Security Token - Signature Algorithm: default - Signature Canonicalization: default - Digest Algorithm: default - prepended the sgnature element to the security header - parts:
Name Namespace
Timestamp http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-utility-1.0.xsd content
Body http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/ content
To http://www.w3.org/2005/08/addressing content
MessageID http://www.w3.org/2005/08/addressing content
Action http://www.w3.org/2005/08/addressing content
- Created Basic Auth with above outgoing signing configuration.
- WS-A configuration: - Enable WS-A addressing - Must understand: NONE - ws-a version: 200508 - Action: action url - MessageID: randomly generated message id - To: to url
I tried to simulate the same in Java (using the Apache CXF library), but ran into some issues. I need guidance to create a Java client to connect with this endpoint. Could someone please assist?

2024.05.13 05:25 PrestigiousBag6605 Got fired at private practice- quit pre-med?

Hey everyone, so I apologize if this is a lot, but I am really in need of some guidance or an opinion if I should re-consider my career path. I recently got fired from a private internal medicine practice. Previously, I was an ED scribe with SA and had worked my way up as a Scribe Trainer. I also worked with another remote company for a short amount of time and did Internal Medicine scribing with a couple of providers. In my opinion, I.M. is a really tough specialty (not my strength), and I had not had much experience with it prior to applying to this company. While working at this company, it was rough. It was super fast-paced, and we had switched from IPads to Laptops, which was hard for me. I admit I was slower than the other scribes there (one doc to a few P.A.'s), and personally needed more time at the end of the day to proofread the notes. The format of charting was also very very different from ED charting and charting for previous providers, so I often asked the providers how they liked their notes and would constantly ask for feedback. Two of them would, and one in particular saw some improvement in my charts, but there was a provider in particular who, every time I would ask her if the notes were okay, she would say so, but was actually not satisfied with them, so I think she was lying. She often made faces as she was editing them and would get angry. To her defense, In a lot of my notes there were spelling errors, I would put wrong medication names (she would edit or tell me to edit them later) and did not document something that was stated in the room because I did not know if it was pertinent to include or not or did not have the medical knowledge to do so.
I understand how this all is a fireable offense for legal purposes. Ultimately, her and likely the other providers stated this to my managesupervisor and I got fired via a text. I feel like a failure, mostly because I am pre-med aspiring. and told them I wanted to go to med school (not even PA school). Should I rethink this career? I really wanted to do a good job, but even if they did make accommodations (more time after a day to proofread, etc etc), etc it would have likely been too much anyways than to just get another scribe who is more experienced than I. I really did try though, and I really wanted to do a good job and would ask them for help constantly. Only two providers gave me good feedback to help. Should I rethink my career in medicine if I cannot write good medical SOAP notes?
TL;DR: Got fired from a private medicine clinic as a scribe due to poor notes despite asking for help. Should I rethink scribing again in the future, and a career as a physician/P.A.?

2024.05.12 18:46 Ok_Panda587 How to do the best backup of Playon?

I’m having computer issues. If I do a dell preboot check, it gives me an error that my hard drive is in trouble (dunno if due to a power outage I apparently slept through or the fact I run playon 24/7 (or both lol).. but windows says both drives are healthy..having a local tech come by soon, (all this started cuz our computers aren’t staying connected to world of Warcraft, but Playon, the other thing My computer is used for, goes like a champ, and battlenet gave up, and the cable company checked my signals and everything is perfect.. so yesterday I tried the preboot diagnostic for the first time ever, which shot back a 2000-142, which I tried to confirm with windows…
So I want to be able to backup/restore my queue and subscriptions, in case it’s the SSD primary drive.
The rest of this is long and gets into playing the files after, so reading that is up to you! It involves why I don’t use Plex for playback as was suggested I do in a recent thread.
If it the 8T secondary hard drive that’s going, all my playon recordings are backed up, but only my soaps are backed up in the original recorded format, the rest have been processed, so they’d probably just get shifted to the media library in the processed version. I don’t know how to do Plex though (it sounds like a lot of work to set up, and my file naming conventions have slowly shifted over the years, so it’s only the last few years after I got tired of renaming that I started leaving things in PlayOn’s format, so I have no idea what Plex or something like it would see or not see.).
I tried messing around with things on firetv a little bit after the possible Roku Media player change to see if I could find another player besides the Playon app that I bought the firetv for a few months ago, but only because I’d miss the subtitles, but I’m probably doing something wrong there too, cuz nothing sees my computer contents Except Playon. Don’t know if it’s Roku Media Player acting up or not, because as part of the Warcraft troubleshooting, cable said I needed newer router and/or modem Before the cable tech came out since it didn’t fix it. That’s why I recently put a question here about Roku Media Player, because not long before the newer equipment, RMP still saw everything, but mostly I cast from the Playon server trying to watch and remove those bigger files first, since they’re converted into smaller mp4s and archived for rewatching or watching but with lower priority. The next time I tried RMP, it didn’t see any dlna servers. Even attempted turning on Windows apparently ability to do that. I tried adding the folders I use including Playon into the windows libraries afterwards, but I probably need to share them? I don’t have to with Playon. Of course, now I’m afraid to keep tinkering with That, in case one or both hard drive is going.

2024.05.10 18:34 Background-Lie-8220 New Season Idea: Celtic Invasion

Greetings & Salutations!
The following idea I posted to the Steam/My.Games Discord over a year ago. and don't know if it made it to Booming. What I did note was that it was well received by those who reviewed it.
Without further delay, I give you the Celts - chief among them - the Druids. No, not to be confused with the Season with the Scots (who are actually a mix of Eire/Caledonian celtic and viking ancestry). These are examples of the powerful, savage yet highly intelligent (they invented chain mail and soap) Warbands who sacked Rome several times and conquered central to western europe. The warbands I've brought to you were at their height roughly between 500 BC and 500 AD. I saw this possibility when the Gladiator season was released which also covers near that timeline. That's not all - the last unit is also inspired by Robert E. Howard's Conan and Hyborian "Cimmerians" who he stated were the ancestors of the celts.
I hope this inspires, and lends itself toward a new upcoming season. I understand that some, most, or none of these ideas may end up being used. I do urge you all to at least give it some deep thought and consideration as it really may aid in bringing in more players - also, druid outfits are already in game that match the raw passion in these units. Thank you.
The unique characteristic of these units are the shouts: Battle Cry, War Cry, Chants that buff allies and debuff enemies.
CELTS: Cavalry / Prydyn / Druids / Kawaros
☆☆☆ 3.5* Celtic Cavalry (Bow, Sword, Spear - chain mail) Skills [ Bow area Gallop (spear) ] - Bow area attk - Gallop - Short short (short cooldown) (fast horse movement, med armo moderate health/attack/armor pen)
-- Unique? Horse unit that has range, short charge, & fight well in melee [V] & wear med armor (celts invented chain mail). -- Weakness - Undisciplined & no long charge Guerrilla unit w/med armor.
☆☆☆☆ 4.5* Prydyn Warrior (Picti) (Falcata w/shield w/jav-spear - woad paint)
Skills [ Jav target Charge Brace Battlecry ]
-- Unique? Powerful & fast moving unit that carry a few spear, falcata sword, shields, charge & brace plus battle cry, aiding other units. Versatile guerrilla unit. -- Weakness - Undisciplined except in brace. Brace formation similar to Pike Militia. Other Formations similar to Pref Guard.
☆☆☆☆☆ 5* Druids (sickle/scythe, buckler - Unit composed of 3 ranks of druids: Drui for psionic attack, Bard for Buff or Curse, Ovate that heal)
Skills [AOE Chant: Heal/Buff/Psionic/Curse Stun ]
• Ovates - Chant Heal unit & surrounding units initial + regen over time • Bards - Chant Buff unit & other by 20% for all defenses - Curse all enemy defenses by 30% • Drui - Chant Psionic attack enemies for 400 dmg per second for 10 seconds - Thunderstrike Prayer at enemies, stun 3 seconds (independent of chant)
(moderate move, avg armoattack value - high health, high armor pen)
-- Unique? Mystics - chant with interchangeable abilities of: heal, buff, mind attack or curse. Stun is separate of chant.
☆☆☆☆☆ 5* Kawaros - Celtic Champions (Huge War Sword or Spiked axe & Hooked arm bracer, breastplate)
Skills [ Warcry Shield break rush Knockdown Hook & Slash Regenerate (unlock) Warcry - area increase attk 20% while slowing enemy attk & speed by 25%
(fast movement, med armor, high attack/health/armor pen, resistant to knockdown/stun) -- Unique? A barbarian charge unit that breaks through shield wall, then knocks down enemies - decimates defensive units. War Cry - helps allies. -- Weakness - no strong defense against ranged, fire, explosions

2024.05.09 19:49 CustomCranium PROFESSIONAL WET SPECIMEN GUIDE

Wet specimen guide for professional results, with addendum for mummifying specimens
Tools: alcohol (methanol or ethanol only, 80 % or above, isopropyl is not useable for this purpose), syringes, gloves, scalpels or very sharp knives, hemostats/scissor clamps, buckets and jars
  1. Wash your specimen in cool water and a bit of light soap to remove external dirt
  2. Depending on preference, you can gut and wash again afterwards. If gutting, usually larger pieces, you can stuff with bubble wrap to keep shape, and sew or pin together. This is not necessary for anything under the size of a newborn goat, but recommended for anything larger than a piglet unless you are a pro at injection already. 3.Prepare tools within reach.
  3. If not gutted, take your syringe and fill with alcohol and inject through the bellybutton or anus (to hide punctures) into the body cavity until the specimen looks bloated. If you can inject directly into organs through feel, do that as well, it will sublimate through them into the cavity anyway, which is why you want it to look bloated, to make sure there's enough alcohol in there to preserve all the organs you don't directly hit. Make sure you get up into the diaphragm where the heart and lungs are located. If your syringe needle is not long enough, go through the armpit. If gutted, skip this one step. If it's a snake, inject every inch or so along the body until you see it forming a bubble under the skin. It will not look bloated when you're done soaking, so don't worry about it being distorted forever, it won't.
  4. Inject between the toes into the foodpads, and use the needle to go along the bone to inject further up into the leg. Go through the anus to inject into all the thigh muscles until you see the skin distort slightly with the pressure.
  5. Inject into the brain cavity through the nose or ear, or through the upper palate of the mouth. PLEASE be careful at this step to brace the head with something other than your hand, because the needle may penetrate the skull into your hand.
  6. Once the specimen looks bloated and full, give it a rinse and place into a bucket with the same alcohol for its first soak. It will leach fluids and become cloudy, this is totally normal and you don't have to throw that alcohol away, you can reuse for first soaks until it starts to smell bad. I usually do these in batches so there will be lots of things soaking for a while, usually by size. *Side note: If you're just doing small parts, like feet, small tails, etc, anything smaller than cat legs can do diretly into the alcohol with no injections or other prep besides the initial wash. The large opening from the detachment creates a large enough hole for the alcohol to enter and soak the whole thing. Larger things such as deer legs will also have to be injected every inch or so to penetrate the connective tissue, just treat them like a stiff snake.
Soaking guide by size: Things under fist size - 1 week
Things fist size to halfway up your arm - 2-3 weeks depending on body style, like lizards will soak faster than say, kittens or rabbits, and snakes are usually a 3 week soak unless they are into your larger fatter things like constrictors, in which case use the 4 week mark.
Things as large as your arm or larger also take weight into consideration - piglets usually take 3 to 4 weeks, cats and puppies can take a month, kid goats a month and a half.
Congrats, you have a wet specimen! Now comes second soak. After washing your thing off again with soapy water and rinsing, you can put it in an appropriate jar. Usually you'll have a second soak in which a little bit more dirt and internal soup will come out but that's also completely normal. Wait for a couple weeks to see if this happens. If nothing sloughs off or comes out in your second soak, you can just keep it in that alcohol, it's already fully preserved. If not, you can use the alcohol from the second soak to use as your first soak for the next round of wets, or use it for the injections for the second round. When storing used alcohol, I recommend filtering it throug some cloth to get out most of the larger particles. Do not store wets in direct sunlight, it degrades the color and eventually the specimen itself. You may store it in isopropyl at this point, but it is not necessary. Once it's fully preserved, the change in alcohol will not hurt it, but remember to wash it whenever you put it into a new solution.
Notes on choosing alcohol; I use denatured, it has a bittering agent that makes it unpalateable for living things, so your pets and children won't want to drink it. It's a safety measure i learned to incorporate because I have animals and do educational programs with children, and people have kids at home and sometimes things break. Also the reason i don't choose to use formalin unless specifically asked by a specialty client.
A note about formalin: While a lot of people say you can't preserve things without it, it's scientifically inaccurate. Most museums don't even use or reccomend it because of its dangers and associated difficulties of disposal. The ONLY notable difference in alcohol and formal in preservation qualities is the preservation of cell structure with formalin, making it useful in labratory settings where skin and organ slides are studied under a microscope. Keep in mind that formalin is 90% alcohol and that is what actually preserves the specimen, the formaldehyde added to make it formalin is what works on the cell shape. That is not a concern for oddity collectors and should not be a factor in home use and preservation. Specimens are scientifically recorded from long before formalin was invented and are still viable today, so there's a ton of scientific evidence to show that alcohol preservation, when done right, can absolutely create perfect specimens lasting lifetimes.
Where to get supplies: Alcohol can be found in gallon or quart cans at any hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot, often marked as "Fuel" for camp stoves. If not, you can easily order it online, in gallons or 5 gallons cans. I get mine from www.zoro.com but i know Amazon and Walmart usually carry it as well. Syringes in larger gauges can be found at feed and/or farm supply stores or ordered online. eBay carries them under veterinary equipment, as well as the scalpels and blades, plus the hemostats.
For mummies made from wets, after following the above steps: Remove your little wet specimen guy, and rinse off with some cool water and a little bit of soap. At this point he's perfectly safe to handle without gloves, but if you don't like the smell of alcohol on your hands, you can use some. Using either blocks carved from styrofoam or cardboard, and sewing pins, you can pose him in whatever position you'd like and pin him in place. Try to use the pins in between the toes or on the side of a limb, You can also use rubber bands if you want, I like to use the tiny hair bands. Depending on the size, you can let them air dry or place in front of a fan, but you don't want to use too much heat because it makes their limbs contract.

2024.05.08 13:14 Arrowbyrd NBasic but Big Mobile Reader perspective

Edit: Saw this later from web and it was awful to look at. Cleaned it up. Please read strike through as cheeky side comments.

Premise:

Share my experience getting started on Bookfusion as a mobile first reader on iOS. I am also a dev so I like to give feedback when I see a project with promise and I figured my use case is not so unique.

Background:

I stumbled upon this app after months of being super annoyed searching for a way to away allowed tablet +pen users to write in line on epub files. I know now that this is possible on some of the very new color eink readers and (maybe?) Marginote but nothing accessible on iOS that gives you the full "I wrote in this book" feeling. I don't actually write in my paper books because it crowds the pages. However I use text based annotations all the time and love that I can just hide them away as I continue reading. It seems like a waste to have all this hardware capable of writing on books, but not supporting the most popular book format for published media. My full ebook library is close to 350gbs, and I have read them on many generations and sizes of devices over the years. That's why I don't like to use pdfs, so I will not be converting them.
Alright, off my rant.

History with other ereader applications:

I've been reading from epub files since the original Barnes and Nobles Nook launched in 2009. Things have changed a lot since then (for better and worse). My biggest pet peeve with all these platforms is that they lock you into their version of a book store and never allow you to include your currently library- or if they do allow sideload, it is at a disadvantage. Each of their reading apps are somewhat lacking in functionality too, one way or another.
I haven't mentioned my qualm with actually buying books on these platforms either. Needless to say, I have books scattered across all the major platforms, which is why I will never get a kobo, amazon or otherwise platform affiliated e-reader and why I'm super interested in software based app solutions. I stick with iPad/iOS because it's familiar (I've had iPhones since the 3GS, and iPods even before then) and I have access to a lot of other stuff there too, jack of all trades style. Not an apple fanboy, I just hate having to change up something that's working for me already.
I have yet to find an eReader app that does everything I want, though. Besides digitally hand-writing in ebooks (which I understand is a particular challenge due to the format), I always end up trading one important feature for another. If I want an intuitive and simple interface, I have to give up customization options. If I want good organization, I have to give up proper cross device sync. If I want cloud sync I have to pray to the rain gods and light some candles. I rarely read from web since my iPad is a full laptop replacement to me, so this will all be iOS and iPadOS app perspectives.

Baseline for Comparison to BookFusion:

I have and still have to use the usual Apple Books, Kindle, Google Books and Kobo apps since my purchases are locked there for now. My latest and current app of choice was Eboox. It's made by a quiet little dev team. It's a 2 page app basically. Library view or shelf view. Some customization settings, but it has page-level Google drive based sync. Same deal, you can upload epubs super easily. I like that it shows me my most recent book at the top, and I can even download converted-to-epub fic and other comic files to this app sometimes. The big cons are that it's not very well polished: updates are slow, the shelving system is infuriating because there is no user created order enforced and since you can't re-arrange books on a shelf, tag, or otherwise subshelve books to group them you're stuck with alphabetical and recency order. On my "Worth Reading Again" shelf I'd like to have all the books from the same series sequentially. Or better yet, let me rearrange them. Annotating on this app is buggy, sometimes the note you typed won't be saved and will be open in the next note you make. The reading view navigation is glitchy and crowded. I have stuck with it because it does the thing(tm) with no forced frills and it is simple and nice to look at.
When Bookfusion came up on reddit in my search for supporting hand-written annotation it was like candy on Christmas. Plus, page level audio integration (something I never dreamed of having on mobile outside of platform lock) coming soon? Amazing. Now, I'm excited.

Initial Reaction/Onboarding:

I downloaded the app and made a quick account (not too many forced profile details too, great!), It was super easy to get started. Importing books is also quick and painless although that 10 books free limit is really nothing for someone like me *more on that later in criticisms.

What I Loved:

  1. I was immediately in love with the amount of customization available for the reading view. Full color spectrum background support is awesome! I'll take an all black dark mode theme but for me, cream text and midnight blue background reign supreme for me. I don't normally mess around with the font options much but there were a lot to choose from! Big points.
  2. Ability to tweak the epub files summary and meta data right in app is nuts, and incredible. Absolutely my favorite surprise perk so far, I've never had that available in a mobile app.
  3. The sidebar is easy to use. I didn't love there being a store in my reading app (see my complaints about platform tying) but it is unobtrusive and I appreciate that.
  4. Navigating my collection is straightforward and awesome. I prefer the info view over the gallery view since have a lot of files with no cover. Currently reading book at the top in the main screen is a feature I grew to love so I'm grateful to see it here!
  5. I just about cried when I saw the color coded (And searchable!!!) tag integration. I've never had an iOS app do that. Especially on files with a large number of tags, like epubs exported from AO3. It's usually something I categorize on my own via shelves. Pretty damn awesome!
  6. The text search is actually useful, God is real. I cannot explain how heinous text search has been on pretty much every where else. Being able to search/ see highlights across books is also legendary. A common note-taking feature but a very uncommon reading app feature (especially working well!)
  7. Annotating the typed way (from my iPhone) is awesome. the context menu isn't too crowded, the highlighting is easy (another fully custom color palette, I'm screaming).
  8. Speaking of the note view! I love that you can edit right from there without the book navigating to that page, AND you can jump there by tapping the note. Link navigation in general works well.

Nice-to-Haves that came up during use:

  1. It would be nice to have the option to toggle off the book preview screen that shows after selecting a book you aren't currently reading. Most of the time, I already know what I'm reading when I open it. I'd prefer to be able view summaries or get this view via a long press on the book or from a context menu
  2. I noticed that the order of tags isn't preserved, and instead tags appear alphabetically. Not a big deal, but it would be a nice to be able to preserve the order that they were imported with, and that you could priority order them. It would also help in the info view, since those top tags would be priority order too rather than whatever was closest to A.
  3. I noticed that if I tap on a highlighted area I've already annotated it doesn't do anything? I would love to get an inline view of my note or at least a preview of it when I tap on the highlighted portion without going back to the edit menu to do so. Since, you can view all your notes across the book from the right sidebar menu, I can live without it but it would be a very nice to have.
  4. Additionally, I don't always want to highlight AND note. It would be cool if you could have notes indicated with a accent colored underline when the passage is not highlighted. Typically, I highlight when I find the text meaningful and note when I have something to say about the content. For instance, I might highlight a stanza of poetry but not have anything to add. Or I might add a not to a passage that does not make sense to me- in that case, I'm not appreciating the writing but I do have something to say about it. Maybe this could be done by being able to preset a with a separate highlight color as default for when specifically selecting to add a note. In my view, notes that I wouldn't want literal highlighting on could be defaulted to a very gray/muted color, and then highlights remain as they are now.
Conclusion: So far I'm pretty impressed, and I know there's even more to explore with Callibre integration stuff too. Right now my central ebook library is hosted on a NAS that needs to be upgraded so it won't take me 20 minutes to download an audio book lol. I'd be interested in hosting my library on a cloud too. I also haven't tested it on ipadOS fully yet beyond the sync capabilities, but I'm already pleased with what I have seen so far in iOS
That does bring me back to the pricing though.

Criticisms

Some minor nitpicks: When I get a reading app, I'm looking for it to be completely usable offline. I think most people would agree? Why would I need to make an account before I even import a book? It feels like a lot of investment before I have even seen the app enough to decide if I will use it? It is understandable for early access but it did somewhat rub me the wrong way.
The Store. I don't love it. I wish it was out of view or something I had to open specifically rather than be in my main navigation bar. I get it, but it harkens back to platform lock.
The future social media-like features: Please, PLEASE make these optional or hideable. I hate this social-media-fication of everything these days. I don't want to be on yet another social media platform, I try to be on as little as possible of the already existing ones that you can barely escape these days. Goodreads and Storygraph already exist and I hardly want to use those. Storygraph is sticking to Goodread's original purpose which was to track your reading easily, and is the whole reason I use it. When Goodreads turned into Amazon's rendition of Bookface, I left the platform. Now it's cluttered with social media features I never wanted in the first palce. Goodreads became hard to use for it's original purpose. You have to constantly navigate away from a feed made up of people and authors I don't care about (because even if you didn't have people to put posts in your feed, they'd make you one based on recommendations and your reading lists....yay). Then the reviews were being censored, Amazon was making it difficult to remove books that were added to the platform without permission and get indie authors that actually wanted to be on there up. Sorry, I'm off track. As you can see I have a bitter attitude toward forced social media features. If the app becomes more complex to use for it's main purpose (re: Do The Thing TM) due to the social features it would ruin the whole thing for me.
The free tier: 10 books + 2 adds/deletes per day is way too low to get integrated into a new platform. I'm sure I would not have had time to consider whether I want to continue with my whole collection in Bookfusion before I reached frustration with the cap. I have at least 50 books in every eReader app I have right now, bar kindle since you can only download 10(?) at a time... but I can download and trade them as often and whenever I want- and I don't even properly OWN those titles half the time. And all of those are free and direct competition to Bookfusion.
In the free tier (without specifically enabling it), I should not be using up any cloud storage. It feels arbitrary to have this limit on the number books I can view in the app when I'm not using any services to do so. My device, that I own, with it's internal storage already holding my books that I also already own. Why am basically forced to be on a subscription to use the app realistically when the app is supposedly free? I would have rather (and happily) paid 4.99 out right to have no local storage limits, and the basic offline do the thing(tm) features. This app is better than any other e-reader I've found on the market so far so it should have a strategic advantage but it feels like I won't even get to experience that before I have to pay- under the guise that the app is free.
It's giving free trial instead of freemium and that doesn't line up with what is shown on the app store page. As it stands, I would not consider this a free app, as you can't use the basic feature set realistically without the subscription. If I only owned 10 books or would be okay to only view 10 books on rotation, I probably wouldn't be looking for something with such a robust feature set so I also feels this contradicts the goals of the market you're trying to capture. I understand pushing conversion, but this actually just scares away people who might have gotten themselves fully integrated into the platform and eventually more willingly paid for extra things one might expect, like expanded cloud storage, real time cross device sync, access to new features etc etc.
this is a bit of a soap box speech but I'm explaining what I would like to see for a subscription model Discord is a great example of freemium. The basic features that make it competitive are completely free. These features are limited to user in a reasonable manner, so that if they don't care too much about streaming in 4k or being a power user with 100+ servers, they can comfortably use the app in the free tier. When I first got on discord, it was to use servers as big archivable and searchable group chat. Much smaller than what it was capable of at the time, but had the easiest onboarding and the lowest overhead to get started. All you need is an email address, a username and an invite. Today, I've been a nitro subscriber since 2018, which is 2 years after I got started on the platform. No one I knew besides my gaming friends were on discord. Slowly, as I convinced more people to join me on the platform (I'd respond faster since I could use the web app at work), more and more of my total communication was happening on discord. Now, I happily pay monthly to have 50 more emojis to take between servers, customize my profile and push my server cap up. I also get to support the devs making a tool I use all the time and get early access to new features. I was already invested in the platform and that guaranteed I would want to continue with Discord enough to want and enjoy these extra features instead of hopping to a competitor like Telegram to start all over.
Because of the 10 book cap, there's no real incentive for me to invest time into importing all my books, making the shelves and tags I want to use, customizing the reading ui and making sure it synced over to my ipad. A casual user could have this experience: Upload 10 books immediately, be blocked from uploading more without deleting and be stuck. "What? Well that sucks, I really liked it so far." and immediately leave for other, worse apps that at least let me import my whole library. I hope this is coming off as constructive because I'm not trying to gripe about price. As I mentioned earlier, I have no problem paying for something I know I'm going to use. It just doesn't make sense for me (and when I say me, I mean the general consumer) to get on a subscription for the basic offline features of an app that I likely just got and am not sure I'll keep by that time. Only, if I don't subscribe the app at base is not very useful.
The Other Tiers: The two highest tiers are the only ones that would be useful to me, so I'm sharing my perspective on those. $10 a month isn't a lot but in the monthly sub competition space it's on the steep side. KU is $15? and I get Amazon's backlog included. This app is fundamentally and demonstrably better than any of the platform based apps, but it's not promising much recurring value in comparison to other subscription style plans. Maybe something like getting the first month for free would help? But mainly, changing between these apps requires decent front load effort on the user (to export their files from somewhere else, onto your platform) and then on top of that, you have to subscribe to read more than 10 of your own books? For me, I see it as dev support so I'm willing but others might not even try it with a limit that low.
To me, I would want to see features like the following to make $10 a month worth the value add:
But overall, I think this level of restriction will hinder the app more than it helps conversion. Please consider removing the book # (not the feature limits, only the local library size stuff) restrictions and either making the app cost money for those basic offline features or having those certain features be fully free so that the app is functional @ the free tier (and therefore, properly freemium).
I want to clarify in a quick closing note that I'm sharing this to give my perspective. This is not an official feature request or complaint or anything. I thought my onboarding experience and background with ebooks might make for an interesting take by new user but veteran e-reader.
I'd love to hear how other users feel (especially new ones) about Bookfusion and for you veterans, what keeps you using it?
Thanks!

2024.05.06 23:28 GeneralFlat Absolute Drivel

No idea how this show "ones who live" is getting such high ratings. The plot is atrociously bad, lazy writing, the plot relies on convenient coincidences, plot armor, and characters stupidity to drive the plot forward. If you are a person who expects even the most minimal amount of logic and cohesion behind the writing and characters, you will not enjoy this show. If you can turn your brain off and just accept the show for the low effort trash that it is, you might enjoy it.
If any of the characters had even half a brain this show would be over in one episode, Michonne and Rick act so unbelievably stupid that they must collectively share one half of a braincell. Seriously, it's unreal how dumb the things they do are. Whether its Michonne randomly deciding to try and charge through a horde of tens of thousands of walkers for no reason and almost dying just to be saved by convenient plot armor, instead of you know, just going around. Or standing and watching an attack helicopter loaded with giant missiles fly over you, and then stand there and wait for it to turn around, come back, and shoot at you, before you know running away and taking cover like any person with half a brain would do. Again, only Michonne survives this cause plot armor.
Seriously, why did they make Rick into an idiot? He was there for over 5 years and never once thought to join their ranks and play along? Really? He cut his hand off for a stupidly small chance he could escape, and cauterized his wound on a walkers body, like come on now. I can only suspend my disbelief so much. After all that stupidity, some guy on a park bench just tells him "hey maybe just join them and play along" and Rick acts like he never once thought of the idea. Really??? Nobody is this stupid especially not Rick Grimes.
Speaking of insane levels of plot armor, like Rick somehow surviving a grenade exploding the person sitting right next him, surviving the crash of the helicopter, and then also conveniently finding his wife all in one swift motion. Or stopping and staying the night in a collapsing building but also taking the time to have sex and talk through their issues while the building literally crumbles above their heads. Episode 4 in particular really pissed me off, they go from urgently trying to escape the collapsing building to having sex, then talking through their issues, then trying to escape and then stopping to talk more, and then trying to escape again, the episode just goes in circles over and over again in the worst ways possible. The show goes from zero urgency to total urgency at random with no discernible reasons other than bad writing. It's exhaustingly bad, a mentally and physically draining chore to watch this show and try to take it seriously.
Seriously who wrote this? I have seen actual elementary school children write stories with more sense than anything in this show. I truly mean that, whoever wrote this show should be ashamed of themselves for putting this out.
Also michonne is the worst mom in the world, abandoned her children for the entirety of their childhoods to go search for a ghost that was in all likelihood gone for good. Who cares about getting your man back after all these years? Your children should always be a parents priority and she left them during their formative years to go wander around aimlessly for years. Absolutely horrible mother and decision.
From day one AMCs business model for the walking dead has been quantity over quality. As soon as they realized season 1 was a hit, they fired the director who made season 1 so good. Then they slashed the shows budget, despite its newfound popularity. They wanted more episodes, made with less money, so they could fit more time for commercials and ads. Quite literally using the shows success as a cash cow.
This franchise once boasted over 17 million viewers, now they only average around 500,000. Thats 98% of their viewership gone. 16.5 million people who grew tired of this shows bad writing, nonsensical plotlines, constant soap opera drama thats only purpose is to pad the show and make it longer than it needs to be, or the mishandling of characters effectively ruining the character, or simply killing them off. Causing irreversible damage to the shows overall plot. In my opinion this franchise shouldve been dead and buried many years ago.
The walking dead franchise is a shambling rotting corpse of its former self. There is a poetic irony in that. Let it finally die. Please.

2024.05.06 15:10 Extension_Art3158 My dogs will not stop itching (fleas+allergies)

I have 2 dogs. A bichon poodle (5yo) and a yorkie terrier (9yo). 3 years ago I moved to Los Angeles to an area with a lot of stray cats making the area flea infested. Since then, it has been a constant battle fighting the fleas as every single time i walk my dogs to go potty at least 2 fleas jump on each of them every time. My resolution for this has been flea checks after every walk and dawn dish soap baths 1 to 2 times a week. Which i know is not good for my dogs skin however it is the only non medicated thing ive found to work. I cannot afford a vet visit and veterinary medicine for both dogs, and i am afraid to try over the counter flea meds because of the side effects ive read about and it’s high prices.
My yorkie has always had pretty intense skin and itching issues his itching is extreme due to what I think are allergies however we were never able to confirm this with a vet. But with the combination of regular dawn baths and the fleas, his itching is extreme. He now constantly scratches, chews until he bleeds, rips out his hair, and is covered in hot spots/rashes. My bichon is also having these itching problems but i not as extreme as i think it is a reaction only from the fleas
Because it is multiple things causing the itching for one of my dogs, can someone please provide me a game plan on what i can do to remedy the fleas and allergies. Or is this really something that needs a vet visit.

2024.05.05 14:18 byacolate Note-Free House Reviews... Mostly! BPAL Edition

Howdy, howdy! I've posted a few times before with long yapping reviews; the format below is slightly more streamlined than what I've posted previously, because some perfume houses don't always feel like they need the whole kit and caboodle, for a multitude of reasons. The point is still to review these perfumes with a note-free first impression, so as to not muddy the waters of my opinion with notes.
The format:
Noteless Impression: A description of the scent after being applied to skin, before knowing any notes. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: Listing and cross-referencing the notes, as provided by the shop, with my observations. Projection Strength: How strong and broad the scent bubble is on a scale of 1-10. Final Verdict: How much I like it on a scale of 1-10, and why.
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab
13 (Though I first tried this several months before writing this review and looked at the notes back then, I forgot literally all but one, so this review is almost entirely blind. Thanks, memory!) Noteless Impression: I know I'm in good company when I say that intrigue begets adoration. At first whiff, I wouldn't say 13 is exactly pleasant, but it does pique the curiosity - and that only deepens during the drydown. Close to the skin, this smells like cinnamon, incense, and DARK chocolate. When I get whiffs of it through the air it's more of the impression of a dark autumn evening. Howling wind. Something scratching at the door. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: "Smoky cacao, with thirteen jubilant, uplifting companions: white carnation, pimento, whiskey, Madagascar vanilla cream, sugar cane, almond, coffee bean, perigord truffle, tea leaf, nutmeg, cardamom, orris butter, and coconut." Smoky cacao YES, coffee been YES, nutmeg YES, whiskey YES, and the rest just sort of swirl behind phantomlike in the background. I can't say I pick any notes out in particular, try as I might. I can't believe there's no incense note, because at a distance, it just smells like high quality handmade incense. Projection Strength: 8/10; with some of these notes, you really would think it'd be louder, but it's at least somewhat formidable! Final Verdict: 9/10... but not because I think it's the best scent ever. She just gets the brain going! This was the scent that turned me around on chocolate perfumes. I talk about it literally any chance I get. And honestly, I should say it has made me a bit softer on boozy scents too, because that whiskey note is so fire. On a baddie, this perfume would be diabolical. She's the witchy aunt who plays it fast and loose with hexes. She's the werewolf in the darkest corner of the bar. She's a kiss on the cheek that leaves a mark. 13 is that bitch.
Aperotos Eros Noteless Impression: Oooh, bright candied oranges at the top! This is bringing to mind Sorcellerie's "I Think About You, Too" in a big way, but then that brightness and complexity settles into something more akin to the docile nature of Death & Floral's "Color Me Blood Orange". It's like the perfume version of watching a wide-eyed young person with big dreams learn about taxes. I like it even more after that melancholy phase when it gets herby and medicinal. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: “Unloving love: benzoin, Indian musk, massoia bark, myrrh, ambrette seed, galbanum, bergamot, and fir.” Oh, interesting! I want to attribute like, the majority of this scent to the bergamot and fir, but that's mostly because I have no idea what most of the other notes are meant to smell like. I'm typically a huge fan of myrrh, but I can't really pick it out of this one. Projection Strength: 5/10 Final Verdict: Once she's gone through all the stages of life and grief, she gets hot in the way your family dentist is hot. You get it. 5/10
Baku Noteless Impression: I really like this, and a particular note is at the forefront that I can't quite place, but is extremely common in lotion and hair products; think something like "verbena" or "lavender" (though not necessarily either of those). I smell this, and I know that if I go digging far enough in my shower, I'll find that same note on the front of a bottle. In the deepest drydown when it was almost all faded, it maintained this lovely perfume-y scent on my wrist that was very mature and pleasant. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: None. That's fun! Projection Strength: 3/10. After two hours, 'tis but a pleasant memory. Final Verdict: 6/10. I did like this quite a bit, but I'm not really looking for shampoo as perfume, and this one is giving Herbal Essence.
Bliss Noteless Impression: So, I first tried this on a few months ago, and I was so delighted by how chocolatey it was, even though chocolate isn't usually my thing. Just yummy marshmallowy hot cocoa-smelling, really rich and lactonic and perfect for winter. Since then, I've been spending a lot of time with an infant, and trying Bliss on now, after all that baby time... well, she smells like a big ol' fat chocolate baby. It turns less so over time, and more cocoa-pebbles-y, but that first hit was a shocker. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: "A shot of pure, self-indulgent euphoria! A scent that is very, very wicked in its own way: the serotonin-slathered scent of pure milk chocolate." Whatever that milk chocolate note is, is very marshmallow-y. At first super rich, and then over time more of a cute young breakfast cereal milky chocolate. Projection Strength: 8/10 Final Verdict: 7/10; this is such a treat in a very real sense, just totally pleasant and delightful, but I don't think I could ever get over the baby-lactonic quality and FS her.
Dead Leaves and Cinnamon Buns Noteless Impression: There's a lovely deep red fruity smell and cinnamon, and it's all really intense. This smells like sitting in a room on a rainy autumn day with a season-appropriate Yankee Candle burning. There's a hyper specific product this brings to mind, and I'm trying desperately to place it; my brain places it over a decade ago, like a product used pretty often, but it won't leave the tip of my tongue. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: I tried searching for the notes, but they remain elusive! Projection Strength: 7/10 Final Verdict: 5/10. While I do technically like this one, it's just so... reed diffuser oil. I don't want it as a perfume.
Desire Noteless Impression: At first blush, plastic-herby with some kid medicine fake fruitiness. But after a little while, it turns into something that smells very intentionally "vintage". The drydown is very nice if you like old-timey powdery floral goodness, and I do! However, there's something else lurking underneath that's kinda funky which, if you're sniffing right against it, smells like your grandma in her youth slapping some baby powder over her sweaty armpit. BO and baby powder isn't exactly my thing, but it's so realistic that I can't help but appreciate it. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: "The overwhelming agony of passion crystallized into a singularly dark and magnetic blend: bittersweet neroli, black patchouli and black musk, gilded by apple, bergamot, blood red rose, teak, and vanilla." That's a lot of fun notes to crack! Among them I can pick out musks, though they aren't nearly as dark and sexy to my nose as this description says, definitely the apple, and the rose. Maybe the sexy sexy sex part is the BO undertone. Projection Strength: 4/10. It's such a soft, gentle scent that you could mistake a whiff of it for just about any creamy body product. Final Verdict: 4/10. This is the first time in a while I've had the opportunity to smell a perfume with an intentional powdery vibe, so that bumps my rating up a little. It's not precisely my style, but I think it would definitely suit a sapphic femme for date night with her lady, or right before bed.
Dove’s Heart Noteless Impression: It's giving "vintage perfume made by someone who has never seen the outside of a metaphysical shop". I really like this! It smells incense-y and mature, like an older woman is embracing me and then I'm becoming her. The closest I can get to describing the scent itself is like... incense soap. I want to bathe in it. I want to put this on my loved ones so I can smell them wearing it and hold them tight. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: This is discontinued from their Bewitching Brews: Conjure Bag collection, and the only information I can find from BPAL is: "A gentle, healing love blend, often used to help mend a broken heart. Brings peace of mind, soothes the sting of loss, and aids in finding closure." It definitely makes me feel soft-hearted and affectionate, so that's amazing. Very well done. I don't know that I would want this to be a bitterweet sort of scent memory, because it genuinely makes me feel super happy and content. Projection Strength: 8/10 Final Verdict: 8/10. I was genuinely so enchanted by this one, and it's a shame that it's discontinued. I don't know if I would have purchased a FS, just because the DNA isn't exactly unique, but if someone had the opportunity to get their hands on a sample of this, I would 100% recommend it.
Half-Elf Noteless Impression: My childhood friend had a relatively famous painter stepfather and a hippie mother who, despite their own fringe identities, were outrageously bigoted, to the point where my friend was terrified to even hint at an LGBT subject, an identity we shared, in the lowest whispers, even behind closed doors. Anyway, this smells like their house. I honestly just get dank patchouli and old cigarettes. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: “White sandalwood, beeswax, white tea leaf, oud, and a hint of sophisticated urban musk.” I'm shocked that there's no patchouli in this, because that's almost all I smell, aside from the aforementioned pinch of ol' ciggy. Projection Strength: 2/10, but thank Christ for it. Final Verdict: 1/10; even without the negative scent association, "van life chainsmoker who rejects the harsh chemicals in deodorant and swears instead by the power of all-purpose patchouli oil" isn't my personal schtick.
Halfling Noteless Impression: This is EXACTLY what I would want from a halfling-inspired perfume! Gorgeous gourmand right in your face! This is warm and bready, rich desserty vanilla. This is a happy happy scent, almost buttery without necessarily smelling like butter... although now that I'm thinking of it, it's hard not to think I'm smelling butter. Rich. Decadent. Joyful. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: “Porridge, kukui nuts, and pastry crumbs.” If this is porridge, I've been doing porridge all wrong. I didn't realize that porridge was meant to be a religious experience. Projection Strength: 8/10 Final Verdict: 9/10. I've begun to realize that a full ten for me is "I'm going to full size/buy a backup of this, I simply can't live without it." And when I asked myself if I needed a full size of this one, I wasn't convinced. It is one of my top favorites among what I've tried of BPAL, and an amazing gourmand; I truly love this one, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a comforting, joyful scent in their collection.
Incubus Noteless Impression: This bad boy is extremely subtle, like the incubus himself is still lurking in another realm. "Herb candy" is the first thing that comes to mind as I'm whiffing, and then "bubblegum fruit". After a few minutes, she's almost completely gone, leaving the faint scent of grandma's nice hand cream, or the dust you find on a candy wrapper. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: "Spectral white musk and the heart-stopping chill of sheared mint, fanned by caramel-touched body heat, and the diabolical sensuality of black musk, nicotiana, and sage." That mint is the only thing that really sticks around, and its lingering is so sweet. The musks - sure! What little scent is left behind certainly is a lovely skin-type essence. Projection Strength: 1/10, on a scale where 0/10 is totally anosomatic. Final Verdict: The thing is, I'm obsessed with what little of this I can smell. I keep huffing away at my wrist because it's so beautiful. A gorgeous, a dreamy calming minty clean cream vibe. I wish to god I could still smell it thirty minutes later. If it had any power at all, I think this would be a nine, but as it stands, 5/10.
Nocturne Noteless Impression: Right at application, this smelled so similar to Andromeda's Curse's Ouija, a little cousinly. I'm doing my best to not allow what I know of Ouija to affect my impression of Nocturne. This is so so so nice, floral and incense-y. It's definitely a darker "purple" floral, maybe violet? This is a sapphic seductress for sure, the love, yearning, and devotion of a witch who does not realise that her love is requited. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: “An olfactory serenede. A somber, contemplative scent — dreamy and subdued. Deepest violet touched with lilac and tuberose.” They absolutely nailed it. I'm a little shook. While I can sort of find the lilac and tuberose, I think the dominant scent here is violet. It's the one I get a whiff of the most when just going about my business. Projection Strength: 7/10 Final Verdict: 9/10. I would consider full-sizing this one, but if I had to choose to FS either Nocturne or AC's Ouija, I'm not entirely sure I'd choose Nocturne.
Oberon Noteless Impression: At the initial application, this was wholly unpleasant; I wondered if the oil had gone bad. Fortunately, the dry down came pretty quickly, and this transformed into something very fresh and clean! I'm getting generic but cozy dryer sheets from this, or any kid shampoo called something like "Sudsy Bubbles". It's gotta be floral too, but again in a supermarket laundry product sort of way. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: “Orchid, white musk, and bergamot wafting over juniper berries, with a gentle touch of soft, earthy patchouli.” Huh! I don't typically think of orchids when I'm hit with "generic floral scent", but in the deep deep drydown after a few hours, I can maybe get that earthy patchouli. I'm glad it stayed far, far in the background. Projection Strength: 5/10. This projected modestly but decently, and it lasted around three hours. Final Verdict: 6/10. It's nice, but the fanciful name doesn't particularly save it from its generic vibes.
Port-au-Prince Noteless Impression: Oh my gosh. At first I got one of the prettiest cherries I've ever smelled; it faded pretty quickly, as cherry (if indeed it was cherry) is wont to do, but in its place is this unbelievably photorealistic cinnamon. Like, it smells like taking a huge whiff of a cinnamon stick. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: “Dark, decadent and incomparably exotic: the rich scent of buttered rum flavored with almond, bay, clove and sassafras.” Well, what the hell do I know about cinnamon! She's clove, baby! I can get the buttered rum vibe now that I know it's there, a smooth undercurrent, and the almond note is probably to credit for that gorgeous cherry in the beginning. Projection Strength: 4/10. I'm sad this isn't stronger now that I see the notes; unless your skin chemistry amps up and projects any of these notes like crazy, it's unfortunately quite faint. Final Verdict: 9/10. This would have been a ten if only it was stronger and longer-lasting, because I'm truly in love with it.
Prototype MMHXI Noteless Impression: The first hit of this is so potent and incensey, but sniffing deeper it smells like brown sugar and old timey soda. Like the perfect cusp between summer and autumn. Sipping sarsaparilla in a metaphysical shop. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: I couldn't find any notes for this bad boy, try as I might! Projection Strength: 4/10 - it's a STRONG scent, but does not project from my skin particularly well. Final Verdict: 7/10. I really like this! It's super interesting, and the rating would definitely be higher if I could smell it better. This perfume smells like how I imagine the home that every late 90s-early 2000s kids' networks Halloween specials' witch grandma lived in. Don't pick apart that Frankensteinian grammar, I've already tried.
Pumpkin Patch Noteless Impression: This one is so so faint, even after a generous application. The more I sniff, the more it smells like clean laundry With A Twist. Like an empty pack of dryer sheets. Two Roads Converged in the Notes: None notes with left beef. Projection Strength: 1/10 Final Verdict: 3/10
Wilde Noteless Impression: On first opening, I desperately want to say this is lavender, the super herby kind, and my god this thing just blooms into an intense pet shampoo smell. It smells like walking directly into a fully packed pet salon. It's lovely! I had my husband smell this without telling him my impression, and he said it smells like "an air freshener, or the Trader Joe's laundry detergent". We use their lavender detergent, so that makes sense. If I convince myself to get back into perfumeland with this one, there's something classically masc underneath, almost like aftershave? Two Roads Converged in the Notes: “A sophisticated traditional gentleman’s cologne, with just the slightest taint of patchouli’s passion, tonka bean’s decadence, the philanthropy of bergamot, moss’ cynicism, the sharp wit of lavender, and the hopeless romantic longing of jasmine and thyme.” Heavy on the cologne and lavender, and I can definitely see how other herbs are thrown in there for good measure! Projection Strength: 5/10 Final Verdict: 6/10. I do like it quite a bit, but I'm not sure if Doggie Spa is my personal vibe. Mad funny that she had taint in the description.
House Review: I can see why BPAL is the powerhouse of the cell. Now that all the reviews are done, it's fun to see what kept coming up for me - regular incense vibes, and what unfortunately feels like a comparable number of more generic product scents. There were enough winners for me to want to keep trying more, and hopefully one day find my holy grail that I want to fullsize. If I had to pick one of the perfumes I've reviewed above to FS, I think it'd have to be 13. I'd keep her to wear during DnD night where I'm wooing a werewolf in Curse of Strahd, and nothing could get me into character faster. This hypothetical is starting to feel more like an inevitability.
Let me know if you've tried any of these, and what your experiences were like!

2024.05.05 08:42 RRinana Pulp – a Vanilla Concerto Review

Vanilla is my one true love in perfumes, I have a major sweet tooth, and this release has been my most anticipated from any house in a long time, so of course, I had to purchase one of every sample in this collection. By the time it arrived, though, Pulp had announced an additional two fragrances in their collection, so this isn't a complete review at the time I'm writing this. Regardless, I've had each of these ones long enough to give them a bit of a fair shot each, so hopefully my reviews are helpful for those curious about this collection. I will say i am wordy, and love anecdotes, so beware

🌿Vaniglia Presto

Early Morning Spring Greenery & Sweet Vanilla Bean (Rapid/Early, 168-177 BPM) First Impressions
In the Bottle It's fresh! A sweet grassy smell with a bit of a light morning dew. This isn't usually my style of fragrance, but I'm actually looking forward to trying this one. It's a little bit fresh cut grass, a little bit walking through a leafy hedge after the rain On the Skin Smells similar to how it does in the bottle– delightful! The essence of fresh cut grass calms down pretty quickly on my skin, and its just light, fresh, and clean. It reminds me of peeling the stems of dandelion flowers and the smell on the inside. It's bitter for sure, but it smells like I am comfy rolling around in a field way. It's got a plant pollen smell. It doesn't change a whole lot on my skin, and is just a little sweeter upon drydown. 6/10 Glad i have this sample, and i can see myself reaching for it, but infrequently, and I don't know if I'll ever fullsize it

🍍Vaniglia Vivaci

Lively Tropical Fruits & Vanilla Orchid (Lively/Upbeat, 132-140 BPM)
First Impressions In the Bottle A hearty, but soapy fruit salad mix. There's a little bit of warmth to it, like a sunny day that I enjoy. It's a bit of a woody, earthy, fruity combination. Not very vanilla-ish. On the Skin Initially very soapy, and smells like the orange bottle of febreze (Hawaiian Aloha?) I don't get a lot in the way of vanilla at all, and am a little disappointed. It does relax down into a hand-soap vanilla tropical something, but I think I'd prefer this as a deodorant, or a hand sanitizer. I can't isolate any particular tropical fruits in this, possibly pineapple, but it comes off artificial. It's sharp, and I wouldn't likely wear this day to day. Maybe after a shower. I'll let this rest for a few days and approach it again, and hopefully let the fragrance develop. 4/10 Not for me, it's indeed super summery, and could be wearable for someone, but it's probably better suited to a hand cream, or in a diffuser than on my skin directly.

🍮Vaniglia Allegro (4.5ml rollerball)

Gourmand Notes & Golden Vanilla, Allegro (Bright and Cheerful, 109-132 BPM)
First Impressions In the Bottle I don't like this one initially, I haven't let the bottle rest, and it smells like a really dusty bookshelf in a bakery. I get a hint of gourmande-ness. It's a little more frosting-like, and a touch screechy. I'm a bit worried that I don't like this, and I normally adore gourmandy vanillas. On the Skin ...huh. there's a faint fruitiness that comes out on my skin almost immediately, and reminds me of Lorraine's in Wailuku, and her amazing fruit garden, and home baked banana cream pie. Am I crazy? This is a bit of a surprise to me as I was expecting a cakey, frosting-y gourmand. I do still get a bit of it, but it's a backdrop to that opening. It's slightly toasty, like a pastry dough or a graham cracker. A pie crust! After sitting on my skin for a while, I like this more and more. It's lighter, and I get more of that slight fruitiness as time passes. I think this will be a great fragrance to wear when you just want to smell effortlessly delicious without smelling like a slice of cake. Pairs really well with my various fruit scented soaps. 8/10, I wont get a larger size than my 4.5ml unless it ages particularly well, but i'm happy that I gambled and got it in the first place. Good gourmand for the summer.

🌶Vaniglia Adagio

Gentle Spices, Cardamom, and French Vanilla (Leisurely/At Ease, 55-65 BPM)
First Impressions In the Bottle This is pretty interesting in the bottle. It's the inside of a spice cabinet without being in your face spicy. It does sorta remind me of tiger balm after it sat on your skin overnight, not sure why. On the Skin This one makes me hungry. It smells like my home when someone is cooking, something sweet baking in the oven, and curry on the stove. I'm not usually huge on spicy notes, but I can see this one growing on me. It's a little clovey, but I mostly get Cardamom. Very wearable, I can see myself wearing this at the end of the summer. The french vanilla balances it from being too intensely curry. My mother makes cardamom french toast cupcakes, and layering this with a sweeter vanilla would probably make it smell exactly like that. After sitting on my skin for some time the cardamom develops and takes a very present position. It's a comfy scent, warm, cozy, and just sweet enough for me. 7/10 Once I get past the wafts of chicken curry, this turns into a very nice cardamom/vanilla fragrance. Nice! Not my favourite but a nice addition.

🌳Vaniglia Lento

Earthly Patchouli, Woods, & Balsamic Vanilla (Slow/Calm, 41-45 BPM)
First Impressions In the Bottle On the initial sniff it reaffirmed why I don't like patchouli for myself most of the time, but Pulp does such a great job with patch that does make it more tolerable. This has an unusual complexity that might turn this into one of my favourite woody scents as time goes on, or I'll hate it. I'm not sure. I get the impression I'd go absolutely crazy for this smell on someone else. It's androgynous, for sure. On the Skin I think I was right on the money on "loving this on someone else," or maybe when I'm feeling more like blending in with my local woods. This is easy to love for me since it's very obviously well blended, and another great, slightly spooky addition to Pulp's collection. If your heart is set on smelling like an ancient force of nature, this one is absolutely for you. Issue is that I wear woody fragrances so infrequently that I'll probably just keep this one shelved. 7/10 Ragh I want to full-size this one but I know I'll never wear it. I need someone in my life to wear this around me every day so I can have an excuse to sniff it.

🕯Vaniglia Grave

Liturgical incense, & Smoked Vanilla (Stately/Somber, 20-40 BPM)
First Impressions In the Bottle Whew that is 100% incense cannot deny that. I've never had much experience with incense, so it's not something I've taught my nose to enjoy. There's a local store near me that sells witchy oddities, steampunk costume pieces, and what looks to be fantasy artifacts. This scent would fit right in with there. I hope the smoked vanilla comes out on the skin. On the Skin Yes yes yes this is the vanilla of my dreams. Smoke notes drive me crazy and this is sufficiently vanilla enough that it satisfies my sweet tooth. The incense melts into the background and gorgeously compliments the vanilla. It's hauntingly beautiful. Definitely something I'd be happy to wear in the wintefall on a snowy night, but I honestly want to live in this scent. A basement in a cozy cottage in the woods, mid january, you cant see the moon tonight. You're by a woodfire, rolled up in a quilt and just about to drift off to sleep. 10/10 I am so pleasantly surprised by this one. I was dreading trying it on my skin since incense is a note I'm afraid to wear. I don't want to smell like a church, but this perfume blew me away. Absolutely going to full size this one. I want to chew on my arm like a feral dog, it does something to my psyche u cant explain.

In conclusion

I think my biggest takeaway is that I really can't trust how a fragrance smells in the bottle, because the only one that smelled great to me in the bottle was Vaniglia Presto, but almost immediately upon touching my skin they just transformed. I am a feral vanilla animal, and when i'm looking at this collection, expecting vanilla, and then not getting them in the bottle .. I must admit I was worried. But the vanilla is really just a super pretty base note to each of them. I think that this might be a great collection to introduce someone who doesn't like vanilla to more vanilla notes. Each fragrance is so complex, and I'm not nearly experienced enough to isolate notes. I had a great time sampling each of them, and I'm looking forward to how they develop over the next couple of months.
Thanks! Hope this is thorough enough! And that the formatting doesnt stink.

There are both pdf and Roll20 character sheets for Thirsty Sword Lesbians available. The system itself is free at https://evilhat.itch.io/thirsty-sword-lesbians through community copies.
Number of Spots Available: 3-5
Brief Synopsis: This takes place in a version of the realms of Norse mythology. The gods have tasked you on a diplomatic mission to the neighboring home of the elves due to your expertise and personal connections! You all know the wedding party and in your long lives (whether elf or another species) have crossed paths before, perhaps in friendship, love, rivalry, or something else! Now an elvish councilmember is to be married, Eldalota Silvertongue. However, on the day of the wedding, she disappeared, and accusations quickly fly. How will you resolve this diplomatic disaster? And, in the realm of the elves, there are many possible dangers to face - strange magics, elvish customs, the dangerous ancient woods, wandering dragons, clingy magical artifacts...!
Additional Details: This is not DnD, and I'm happy to help with learning the system! Please do not apply if you cannot commit to all three sessions. I will run with a min 3 players and a max 5, and the game will not be rescheduled if one player is missing.
Please don't DM me to apply, but feel free to DM me or message on this post if you need clarification or have questions

2024.05.02 23:32 greencheeser83 Did you know?

Mixing household dish soap with apple cider vinegar could lead to the formation of a volatile compound known as "Cidorium Hydroxifax." This compound is particularly unstable due to an oxygen bridge that creates tension between ester and sulfate groups within its molecular structure. Upon decomposition, Cidorium Hydroxifax releases "Hydroxic Acid Vapor" (HAV), a toxic gas that can cause severe respiratory distress and systemic organ failure.
The real danger unfolds as the breakdown of Cidorium Hydroxifax not only emits HAV but also produces significant thermal energy. This heat could trigger a chain reaction known as thermal runaway, where surrounding molecules of Cidorium Hydroxifax decompose at an accelerated rate. Such a scenario could potentially extend the toxic and thermal effects to a radius of approximately 17 kilometers, amplifying the initial hazard into a widespread disaster. Secondary effects might include escalated ambient temperatures, leading to fires or explosions that complicate rescue operations. Did you actually believe that? I just made it up :)
