Small warning, this review deals with NSFW topics and bdsm topics.
I recently asked for recommendations for books with subspace or where subspace is a big part of it, and I need to send a thousand thanks to user u/onlymorelove for having recommended me this series. I devoured it in like... three days and a half (all of it), and I thought more people might be interested but might need extra warnings/and information!
This is a full on friends-to-lovers kink discovery, heavy into BDSM and some extreme BDSM practices, and the book is very very self aware about what is going on. I find that sometimes books about BDSM tend to pull at my suspension of disbelief, fall into extreme dialogue heavy pages or end up being not really self aware enough to realize that some things cannot be done safely, or could be scary. I had nothing to complain about in this novel!
So the full book is technically the collection of four novels: Learn the Rules; Obey the Rules; Break the Rules; Flying Free. They are all one pov (third person, from Ben's pov).
The plot: The plot is quite simple, and it mainly revolves around relationship/kink discovery with minimal external plot. Ben and Xander are friends and colleagues, both wanting to work in theater. Ben, believing himself straight, starts to realize he might be bisexual and into kink when he accidentally finds out Xander is into spanking (and much more).
Novel 1-3 is the full on romance story of Ben and Xander, going from Ben discovering kink, a kind of friends with benefits situation, then defining their relationship. The story keeps going into Xander's desires, and the couple trying more extreme kink, with more about long distance relationships, then difficulties in balancing their careers with their relationship. And even more difficulties in trying to find balance with kink and power in their love story. It all culminates into a break up, with then a quite satisfying make up after many months of pause and therapy.
Just a small warning, the book gets into pretty dark territory, but again, it is clearly self aware and striving for the characters to have a good relationship.
Technically, the story could nicely end up with novel 3.
Novel 4 (Flying Free) is more about Xander, a bit more about Xander and Ben dealing with fame and paparazzi and blackmail, and it felt less cohesive with the rest of the series. It was still nice especially because the novel showed us how the relationship between Xander and Ben changed after they got back together, but I would have enjoyed even stopping at novel 3.
A small note for my favorite thing ever: how the novel dealt with subspace. I absolutely loved it, so much that I would have enjoyed seeing Xander's pov on it.
Warnings and content (outside the whole BDSM kinks used): annoyance at the use of a slow down safeword, 24/7 relationship attempt gone wrong, mention of serial killers, mention of very dark desires (implication of serious bodily harm), stalking (sort of, not between main characters), blackmailing mentioned, therapy, anger issues, breaking the agreed upon limit during a scene (the sub character tries to dom for the first time and pushes limits), emotional manipulation that almost leads to a breathplay scene (the sub character tries to emotionally blackmail the dom character into trying breathplay for the first time, during their break up), unhealthy relationship that is recognized by the narrative and worked upon by the two characters (ex. character refusing to have the sub meet other people in the kink scene), mention of breathplay scene gone wrong (not between main characters).
BDSM kinks: spanking, orgasm denial, holding down, caning, whipping, blood kink (with knife), fear kink, CNC, subspace, breathplay (hand on mouth only), mirror sex, 24/7 relationship trial (but does not end up being something they can sustain), collaring (sort of), puppy play (tried once, more of a comedic scene), writing on someone with a sharpie, scarring, biting, scratching, sadomasochism and dominance/submission, switching.
Also the book has no cheating, but it has a break up and then an apology and a second chance romance.
Other non-kink but general trope content that the book has: bisexual main character (who believed he was straight), friends to lovers, kink discovery, subspace, there is a little bit about secondary characters especially in the last book, some stalking and blackmail, therapy and mentions of strategies, journaling, a lot of poetry being recited and mentioned, actors story (both are actors/wanting to work in theater), paparazzi, long distance relationship for a bit, temporary break up.

These definitions may not be yours or the most standard, but they're the ones we found that best get the points across that we are trying to get. Note: We use the words we use because we find that they are easiest to translate and easiest to understand culturally. Different cultures and different subsets of cultures use the same words in vastly different ways, and some definitions have changed in some cultures and not in others, so these kinds of distinctions are important. We are trying to reach the greatest crowd we can, and readability is a priority, even if some people don't prefer some definitions.

• ABDL - Adult Baby, Diaper Lover. • CNC: Consensual Non-Consent. This is a fetish in which one or more people pretend to not be consenting to the situation. This can range from the receiver teasing/challenging the giver, to the receiver fighting the giver away a little bit, to the receiver requiring themselves to be completely incapacitated.
  
• Consent - The choice to do something. (Informed consent: The choice to do something with the knowledge of exactly what it is and what it entails and what the risks are).
  
• Dominant - A person who is directly guiding a situation.
  
• Female - The initial biological reproductive pathway evolved around the production of ovum, regardless of if that person can actually produce or gestate ovum. Generally dictated by a male SRY gene being not present or present and never active during initial development.
  
• Fetish - We tend to use this interchangeably with "kink", but it's not supposed to be. Generally, we refer to this as a theme that stimulates the senses in a pleasing and adult manner. (Adult here meaning complex in a way that requires a developed brain, not inherently sexual).
  
• Gender - A personal identity regarding percieved sex (the sex you would like to be seen as), or a social identity based on the roles, aesthetics, and stereotypes generally assigned to sexes in a particular culture.
  
• Headspace - Deeply putting your thoughts into one direction, such as if you were pretending to be someone, trying to focus on how they would think and feel.
  
• Intersex - Also known as Disorder of Sexual Development. A condition in which the initial sex devolpement of a person malfunctioned. This is not a third sex, multi-sex, or a non-sex. The person has a sex, either male or female depending on initial SRY gene presence or behaviour, but the development for the body to end up producing either healthy sperm or ovum failed due to the sex-designation signals getting mixed up or not working. Usually correlates with health problems, either minor or serious, since the sex genes of the body play a role in a good deal of body development.
  
• Kink - We tend to use this interchangeably with "fetish", but it's not supposed to be. Generally, we refer to this as a particular thing that stimulates the senses in a pleasing and adult manner. (Adult here meaning complex in a way that requires a developed brain, not inherently sexual).
  
• Male - The initial biological reproductive pathway evolved around the production of sperm, regardless of if that person can actually produce sperm. Generally dictated by a male SRY gene being present and active during initial development.

• Penis - The external male genital and urethral organ located in front of the testicles. Includes shaft, head, and foreskin.

• Sex (verb- "To have sex")- The act of at least two people in which both know the act is occurring, and in which at least one of their genitals is stimulated by the other. (So, jerking off to porn of someone online doesn't count unless they know about it and are actively engaging with you).
  
• Sex (Perceived) - The sex (n) that someone can reasonably presume you are by looking at you (clothed or unclothed). (Regardless of if you actually are that sex).
  
• Sex (Altered) - The result to your natal sex (n) after you've taken actions to attempt to change it. The altered natal sex won't be identical to the unaltered opposite sex, and will come with specific needs and concerns and health risks. (Despite the differences, though, you should still culturally be respected as the gender with which you identify in any way that isn't relevant to your specific sex).
  
• Sexual - Stimulating the sexual senses specifically (sexual is sensual, not all sensual is sexual).
  
• Strangulation - Breathplay that specifically involves external pressure to the throat or chest.
  
• Submissive - A person who is indirectly guiding a situation (via letting the other person guide, and deciding to follow or not follow the guidance).
  
• Top- A person who is giving action in a scene. (For penetrative sex, this would be a person penetrating).
  
• Trans - A person who does not want to be perceived as their sex to some extent. Could be due to traits inherent to that sex, correlating their sex with trauma, the gender assigned to their sex, or another reason.
  
• Vagina - The muscle-lined organ of the female reproductive system located inside the vulva. It appears externally as a hole, but is actually a complicated system of muscles and nerves that provides a connection between the cervix and the external body.
  
• Vers - Regarding tops and bottoms, this is someone who prefers to do both (both being the actor in a scene and the receiver of action).
  
• Vulva - The external parts of the female genitals. Generally includes the vaginal (vagina's) opening, the labia, the external nub of the clitoris, and the urethral opening.
  
• Woman - A person who is comfortable being perceived as female or fitting the gender generally assigned to females (even if they do not approve of the cultural stereotypes and tropes assigned to or forced on their sex).

Deep down I've always had this desire to try new things sexually, push my limits a bit, try stuff like pee play, some light BDSM, breath play, etc. However, whenever I think about my wife, it goes away and the excitement around it and my horniness kind of goes away and I feel a little sad.

No she's not on meds or BC, she's been tested for depression, it's just kind of her personality. Lower energy and doesn't get excited. The rest of the relationship is good. We agree on things like money and values, it's just the excitement about sex mismatch.
Anyone else been in this situation? Not sure what to do. Thinking about sex just kind of bums me out these days cuz I'm not excited about it with her like I was with exes because of her lack of excitement. It's hard to be excited for it anymore since I know she's not.

To preface I’m a radfem, anti porn, pro sex workers, etc, but there are some subgroups that like to shame women and their choices, as well as removing their agency that bothers me.
Some radfems i dont agree with like to say things such as “bdsm or rough sex is inherently antifeminist and to partake in things like breathplay etc, is antithetical to feminism, because women are conditioned through the patriarchy we live in to enjoy it.”
Using this line of thought, ur removing all agency from women since you can extrapolate this to essentially every aspect of life because we live in a patriarchal society, makeup, beauty standards, among other things in our culture that is set by men, and say “to engage in these things are antifeminist”.
Which to me just seems incredibly backwards, like they’re re are saying “Women just don’t have the capacity to make their own choices and everything is puppeteered by men, women aren’t allowed to like things or dress nice or wear makeup, it’s all for the purpose of pleasing men” And if any woman does any of these things she’s called antifeminist by these individuals.
I don’t disagree that we aren’t influenced by our environment, everything is, but it seems incredibly reductive to shame women for their sexual preferences and remove their agency when they are perfectly happy in the ways they are engaging in sex and their kinks.
