2024.05.13 03:10 AsianPastry To rent a car or not to rent a car (Rome-Naples-ischia)

As the title kind of describes it. My partner and I are going to Italy (seriously hoping he doesn’t find this post- as it’s a surprise)
The plan is to fly to Rome - from there we have a few choices of transport - which is where I need help. 1. Rent a car and go from there airport and drive to sperlonga and have lunch -> to Ercolane (village just east down the coast from Naples) and stay for two nights. Whilst there we would do one day exploring Naples and one doing Pompeii and Herculaneum. Then take the car to Ischia and spend two nights where we would explore the island before heading back up to Rome to return the car and have dinner and fly back home. 2. Take the train from Rome to Naples - rent a car - Rinse and repeat the rest from above. 3. Take the train to Naples - taxi and scoot around both Naples and ischia.
What would you do?
(I am not an avid scooter driver but my partner used to be and I’m decent. We are both from Europe and are used to southern European - even Asian - traffic)
I am not looking for help with our itinerary or places to stay - only if you’d recommend this itinerary by car or other means. Thank you.

2024.05.12 23:36 king_slimeball Help with my Europe 2024 Itinerary

Hi everyone, I'll be traveling to Europe from June 24th to July 3rd and need some help finding the right places to travel to. The first place is more to lounge and enjoy sightseeing, the second is to enjoy a major city/area.
I have already been to Paris, Nice, Milan, Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, so I am not interested in going to any of these places.
Ideally the places I go have relatively low COL to US major cities like NYC and LA, safe, easy to navigate without as I won't be renting a car. Huge bonus if COL during this peak tourist time is low, relative to somewhere like NYC/LA. Also would like to limit my exposure to high density of tourists if at all possible, but I understand this is peak season to be in EU.
How I'm breaking it down:
TIA!!

2024.05.09 18:32 lucille_bender Should we stay in Naples and day trip, or split up our nights?

Posted this in Travel as well, but hoping to get a few extra pieces of advice here - grazie mille!
We are going to Italy next month (mid June) and as part of the trip we are planning to spend 5-6 days in the Naples region. We’re interested in visiting Naples itself, plus some/all of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ischia, and Capri.
Questions: 1. Does it make more sense to stay in Naples the whole time and do the other destinations as day trips? Or should we consider staying 1 or more nights elsewhere (eg on Ischia and/or Capri)? 2. Which spots in the area would you recommend we prioritize? Like everyone else, we prefer the “hidden gem” type spots over the blown out tourist mobs 3. Should we consider adding anywhere further south eg Positano / Sorrento / Amalfi? 4. We are hoping to take trains when possible and avoid renting a car, and have heard driving in Naples is to be avoided at all costs, but we’re open to renting one to explore the smaller towns if it makes sense… any advice here?
TIA for any recs! It’s my first time in Italy and we’re super excited!

2024.05.05 05:25 kittiemiao 7 Days in Italy Itinerary

My family and I are spontaneously going to Italy next week! (Round trip to Rome) We will be staying in Italy from 05/11-05/18. I've been to Rome and Naples before, and I loved it! However, this time around I would like to have a laid back nature vibe for some part of this trip. I am stuck between Sorrento or Naples. I visited Capri and loved it there, but we are all kind of going on a budget and will be backpacking. I am very leaning towards Ischia and staying there for around 2.5 days.
My brother is going on this trip for mainly good eats! My mom isn't too picky, and she likes either the city vibe or nature vibe but she's getting pretty old so we want to take it pretty easy for this trip. I kind of want more of a laid-back tropical vibe, but since it is their first time in Italy I want them to see all the touristy stuff too.
So far my itinerary looks something like this:
05/11: Arrive in Rome @ 3pm. Head to Naples (check in) 05/12: Naples 05/13: Naples/Ischia 05/14: Ischia 05/15: Ischia/Rome 05/16: Rome (Day trip? I'm thinking Tivoli, or somewhere in Tuscany not too sure) 05/17: Rome 05/18: Rome. Flight at 6:55
Would love some recommendations on other places to hit or food recommendations!!

2024.05.04 15:28 Ok-Perception-6803 Couple looking to relax- where should we go?

Hi all,
My wife and I are looking to do a 7 day trip in Greece this July and we can’t figure out where to go!
We’re looking to veg out, hang on the beach, eat awesome food/wine, do light touring a day or two, not get slammed by tourists. Two locations would be ideal.
Ideally we stay in boutiqy luxury hotels ($500-$600/night range ok) suited for couples. (Leaving our three kids at home!)
Corfu (Angsana hotel) has been on our radar but not sure what other island/area to pair it with. But we are open to other island groups as well. We aren’t into clubbing (Mykonos would be out) and Santorini’s hill-top vibe doesn’t seem to look like what we’re going for and concerned it would be slammed with tourists. At the same time, we don’t want to be somewhere too remote where there is no action and travel to/from would be difficult.
Is corfu a good option? Any ideas what to pair with? Any other ideas? Having a hard time getting a handle on all the options.
Last year we did Rome and Ischia, Italy (Island off Analfi Coast) and had an amazing time. This will be our first time in Greece so looking for a similarly awesome time.
Would appreciate your recommendations.
Thank you!

2024.04.29 17:47 Sea-One9568 Female solo trip! Sicily vs. Portugal

Hi! I’m planning for my trip in July but can’t decide whether I should visit Portugal or Sicily. I’ll be there for 2 weeks. I’ve visited Italy twice(Venice,Florence,Rome,Naples/Ischia/Sorrento) and absolutely loved it. Ischia and Naples were my favorite out of all! Meeting friendly people and having good foods is very important for me and these two places checked all the boxes. Since I’m spending 2 weeks in one country, I’d like to rent a car instead of taking public transportation but I’m not sure how the driving experience is like in these two places. Has anyone done a solo trip to these places? If so, how was your experience? Did you feel safe?

2024.04.18 00:42 maizyrackkk Amalfi Itinerary Help

Hey Everyone! Need some help with the last leg of my itinerary in Italy for this summer.
I've currently booked the following: 6-8 August Positano, 8-10 August in Sorrento, then Milan 10 August - 12th (checking out early morning 12th). Realistically by the time I travel from Rome to Positano, I'll only really have a day and a half there. Also same goes for Milan, I'll only really have 1 fully day in Milan before flying out.
I'm thinking I might change my itinerary and avoid Milan all together, as I think it will be too rushed. This is the last week of my trip. so I kind of want to relax and not always be on the move. Instead I'd stay in Sorrento from 8-11 August (do day trips from there) and stay one night on the island of Ischia and then fly out of Napels midday of 12 August. This will give me a total of 6 days in the Amalfi, which I'm thinking will be enough to see/do and relax. However, to change my itinerary around its going to cost me $490 since I've already booked flights etc. Do you think this change will be worth it or is it worth staying less in Amalfi to enjoy Milan for a day?

2024.04.17 20:53 KN4S Ferries to Ischia

Hi!
I'm visiting Italy this summer and will be staying on Ischia. However I might have done a mistake while booking my flight. My flight is expected to land at 19:30 and from what I've seen online, the last ferries to Ischia depart at around 20:20. Even though the airport is somewhat close it's not a lot of time to get there, especially if the plane gets delayed or something.
Are there any later departures, like at around 21 or even 22 or would I be better off booking a night at a hotel in Napoli and then go in the morning instead? Should be noted it's on a sunday aswell.

2024.04.16 17:44 Sardinesgirl3000 Making restaurant reservations in late April/ early May and dairy free options

Hi, my family and I are traveling to Italy from April 20th to May 4th and I'm wondering if I need to make reservations for nice or fancy restaurants. I'm having a hard time deciding which restaurants to consider because they all look so good! My sister cannot have any dairy so I would love some nice restaurant recommendations that have dairy free options as well. We are going to be spending time specifically in Rome, Naples, Amalfi/Atrani, Ravello, Vietri sule Mare, Capri, Positano and Ischia (I dont plan to find somewhere nice in every single place, maybe just 2 or 3). Are these dates far enough before the peak season where we could wait a reasonable amount of time on a wait list? Or should we not risk it and make reservations? Thank you for any advice!

2024.04.16 12:14 PatronusNYC Visiting Italy In July, when to book tours/rentals?

Hello! Looking to book boat rentals in Lake Como and Ischia, when should I book these by? (Going mid/end July) I know the companies I want to book with, and they all say they do money back if there’s any weather complications. From what I’ve seen, Italy is pretty dry in July so I think we’d be good.
Additionally, when should I book tours for places like Rome and Florence?
Lastly, should I be making dinner reservations for these highly visited areas? If yes, how far out?
Thanks in advance!!

2024.04.15 13:18 atlasmyboy Trains from Naples to Milan

Hi all,
I will be travelling from Ischia to Milan in July and need to get there in the day. In terms of travel time it seems super achievable.
There seem to be lots of trains doing this route per day, but with the ferries from Ischia there's only like a 3 hour window where the trains would actually work for me. I haven't caught any ferries in Italy before, but in my experiences ferries often cancel last minute or change their times last minute.
I guess my query is - do I need to book a train in advance? Or do you think I will be ok rocking up and getting on any of the 8 trains that arrive in this window?
It will be July, so is gonna be hectic

2024.04.12 19:14 05pnw Trenitalia Pass worth it?

My partner and I will be travelling to Italy the end of May for a wedding, then doing the following;
Siena - Venice
Venice - Rome
Rome - Naples (over the Ischia)
Naples - Florence
I have been looking at the Trenitalia Pass, specifically the 4 trips in 7 days. After doing the math, it seems to be a good deal to cover the longer trips. Has anyone had a good experience with it? Does it allow more flexibility in booking - I would prefer to book a day ahead incase we would like to spend some more time in one of the cities before leaving for the next. Any bad experiences or issues with the bookings?

2024.04.08 23:29 Sharp-Peach-9217 Naples & Ischia - first time trip recs?

I'm visiting Italy next week for the first time with my partner and looking for any recommendations or critiques to our current plan! I know it's odd but I'm very excited about visiting Ischia and plan to do the majority of the trip there. I was so excited about visiting the island when I originally made the itinerary, but now I'm wondering if I'm being insane not spending more time in Florence and Naples.. I may be able to shorten my trip on the Ischia end to afford more time in Naples, however.
We'll be doing 2 days Florence, 7 days in Ischia, and then 1 day in Naples.
Looking for general recommendations for authentic, non touristy places to eat and things to do in all three areas, as well as general tips and/or feedback for first time travelors. We are throwing this itinerary together on the fly. We tend to skip major museums and tourist attractions. I typically base my travel around food, but Ischia really pulled me with the thermal springs and affordability during April.
Love you all

2024.04.02 01:28 One-Breadfruit-2367 Itinerary critique

My wife and I are traveling to Italy for our honeymoon and would love some suggestions on favorites near where we are staying along with some big help with one part of our trip!
We are traveling at the end of April and it will not be as warm as we were hoping.
We are flying into Napoli, then straight to Taromina. Staying at UNAHOTELS Capotaormina. We would love to see the amphitheater, isola Bella, day trip to Gambino vini in Linguaglossa winery and have lunch at the four seasons. Any other suggestions on things to do in taromina?
Then we are flying back to Naples, we would like to charter a private boat to take us along the coast and to capri then drop us off in Ischia. Has anyone done something like this or have recommendations on how to book?
We are then staying at Regina Isabella in Ischia from the 28th through the 1st. We would like to check out some thermal beaches, and have a meal at mezzatore but do not know what else to do on the island, any suggestions? We then ferry back to Naples on the 1st and stay till the 3rd. We will be staying in the Spanish quarter. Any suggestions on what to do in Naples?
Thank you for any help with making our honeymoon unforgettable <3
