2024.05.16 03:33 intro_man_ambivert I can’t believe I’m here in life at almost 25 years old.

I’m 24 (M) 25 in October… and I’m a bit behind in life. I still live at home… Rent free… And I’m blessed at my grandparents let me live here rent free and I’m very thankful for that… however the only reason they let me do that is because they know I can’t afford it like that… I would rather be financially able to be independent. I should’ve had my own crib by now… I also don’t have a car and I should’ve had that by now…
I’m also inexperienced in dating… never made it out of the talking stage with a woman… I’ve never been on a date… I’ve never been kissed… I’m a virgin… just overall really inexperienced. I often get rejected by the types of women I desire of my preferred standards both online in person… I don’t have game. Half of the time I don’t even get followed back on Instagram.
Also I unfortunately had to quit my job today yet again… because of some false accusations they were accusing me of so I wasn’t having it and in the heat of the moment… I quit on them.
So I’m on the search for a new job… hopefully, I’ll get one soon… I want to career and graphic design, but there’s not a lot to offer for that in my small town… I plan to relocate to a new city and start over… but right now I have no car… and I’m currently saving for one. I’m looking for a decent used car with working AC and good for road travel. I’m gonna have to save at least 10K for the car… I was originally planning on under 5K… but car prices (even for used cars) are going up like crazy… then I need to save at least 15K to relocate to a new city. You need 3X your monthly rent and the cost of a U-Haul. It’s expensive… plus I need to have a job/ career lined up in my new city… preferably a graphic design job. (I’m not going back to school… I believe it’s very doable without a degree and know plenty that landed a career in that field without it)…
Also I send way too much time… WAY TOO MUCH TIME sitting in my bedroom… there’s just not a lot to do in my small town… and I don’t have a car to drive to other big cities and do things. Also a lot of my friends are either always hanging out with people I don’t get along with, or busy with their own things. I have friends but again… a lot of them either busy or live outside of here. I spend far more time in my bedroom than I’d ever care to admit… my life is WAY TOO SHELTERED.
But yeah, I’m really tired of being here in life right now… I have friends younger than me that are married and have kids…. One of my friends (he’s 22) just graduated from university and he’s about to play professional basketball,…. This one girl that I use to be cool with a few years back (she’s 23) also just graduated university as well and is about to get an amazing career… (proud of her)… and one of my childhood friends (my age, 24) just had a daughter… he graduated from university back in 2021 and he bought his own house like 2 years ago now. I also have friends that own their own clothing lines and businesses and own their own custom shoe business, etc.
Don’t get me wrong I’m very happy for them… I’m not bitter… I’m proud of them… they earned it and they worked for it… but it makes me look at my own situation like I’m a fool… I know they say don’t compare yourself to others that comparison is the thief of joy or whatever… the truth be told… that’s all I can do… I remember 2018/2019 when I was on the same level as them… and back then I thought I’d accomplish a bit more than what have… fast forward.. and I’ve only accomplished a little bit… I’m like 2-3 steps ahead of where I was back in 2018-2019… and they’re like 2-3 whole entire flights of stairs above where they were…
Also not just in terms of their career… but really in terms of grown as a whole… they’ve grown in terms of confidence,… their social skills have improved quite a bit… knowledge,… They’ve been able to travel a lot more… they’ve really grown a lot as people and I’m so proud of them… like I said back in 2018-2019 I was on the same level as them (and many other of my friends… or maybe even back then I was a few steps below)… they’ve gotten probably.. 70% better in terms of grown… I’ve only gotten like 10% better! I have so much to work on in terms of confidence,… public speaking,… social skills,.. fitness, etc.
I’m not looking for validation… please be honest with me… is it pathetic that I’m here right now?…. What’s the fastest way I can work my way out of this and fix all these things?

2024.05.16 03:32 Mobile-Break2697 Should I take a course in Telecommunications or Cloud?

I am a rising senior IT major and have taken particular interest in Networking. I am studying for my CCNA and just started as a Network Services intern for a company with (I think) a decent-sized, enterprise network. This upcoming semester, I need to take an IT elective and I have been considering a Telecommunication or Cloud course. They are both 500 level courses. I do not know much about either. I do know a lot of both Cloud and Telecom concepts overlap with networking concepts. Therefore, do you think I would be better off taking the Telecom class or Cloud class or are both necessary?(considering the added tuition cost associated with taking both). I am primarily concerned with which knowledge set would provide better career longevity/job security as well as which is more relevant/popular among network professionals.
Thank you to all who provide feedback. Please feel free to offer any additional advice or suggestions about a future in IT/Networking.
Long story short - IT major, studying for CCNA, interested in a career in networking. Would a telecom or cloud course benefit me in terms of career longevity, job security and/or relevancy?

2024.05.16 03:30 flavius_lacivious If you are an older worker and not getting interviews, here is something to try.

Older Gen X worker here.
I was having problems getting interviews which is common if you are over 50. I did all the suggestions, removed any reference to school dates, put only 5 years on my resume, made sure I had current training, dyed my hair.
One day I stupidly realized if you googled my name and city, I showed up in those shitty background check listings where it lists all your contact info and names of relatives. The first listing featured my age.
(It’s not discrimination if they don’t choose to interview you.)
I spent a lot of time try to get my information removed and was somewhat successful, but it would be published again.
I paid a service $30 a year to remove me from EVERYTHING and boy did they. I have had much better luck getting interviews.
Just another tip for us old folks.

2024.05.16 03:30 accidentalswifty Animal control is out to get me

Long story short, I went to jail on NYE and was in there for three days (weekend/holiday) for a petty crime. My 4 dogs and 2 others that I was watching for a friend were at my house. My best friend cared for them (very well might I add) while I was in jail. Animal control was contacted by my ex claiming the dogs were left alone, mistreated, and that I was boarding animals at my home. I returned home from jail and animal control was waiting for me at my house. He’s new, still has the creases in his uniform, stands about two feet shorter than me and takes his job very seriously. You know the type. Regardless of Paul Blart’s larger than life personality, I remained professional throughout all of our interactions. He wrote me a citation for animal cruelty for leaving my dogs regardless of the fact they were cared for, unauthorized use of a residence (because I accepted money from my friends to watch their dogs), not picking poop within 48 hours, hard to do when in jail, and number of dogs on premises (the city allows 3 dogs max, I have lived here for 8 years unaware of this and I moved here with the same 4 dogs I have now and that’s not changing). Prosecutor in my tiny town of like 30,000 people recommended 11 days of jail (no, I’m not joking). I pled to number of dogs on premise and the boarding charge in exchange for 1 year unsupervised probation as the judge didn’t exactly see eye to eye with the prosecutor. To my knowledge, animal control has been aware that I’ve had four dogs and I have certainly not given them any reason to believe I have less than four dogs. That I can assert without a shred of doubt.
A month after we reached an agreement, I received a letter in the mail from the same officer, stating that on 4/8 they received a complaint that my dogs were barking in excess. He edited the standard message to include that this would be my only warning and that the next one would be a summons, which would violate my probation. He made note of the complaint which was received via our cities “app” where anyone can report anything and they may do so without any ounce of personal information tied to it. What struck me as odd was that the “complaint” came in on 4/8, however the letter and the report were filed on 4/7. What’s even stranger, is that I was camping 3 hours away with all four of my dogs for a week and didn’t return home until 4/11. I can’t help but to feel like that was anything other than a targeted attempt to punish me.
A week after that, animal control is in my alley looking over my fence into my yard. Harassing my dogs who were now barking aggressively (as they have every right to do might I add, I don’t care if the FBI or the Pope are peering over my fence, unless you have my permission to do so my dogs can do whatever the hell they want). A few minutes later there’s a knock at my door, he tells me that I’m in violation of the ordinance regarding the number of animals I have on premise. I told him that * ”I do not wish to speak to you anymore because every time I have been honest with you— I have only ever been honest with him— it was under the pretense that you were “concerned” with my animals and you used that concern against me” * His supervisor, who is a literal Paul Blart on steroids told me that I would either do whatever the officer said or they would “seize whichever dogs they wished to at their discretion and I could go to court to get them back but that likely wouldn’t end in my favor”— that’s a direct quote. He then asked me to bring my dogs out one at a time for him to “inspect”, all of whom were healthy and in great shape as they’ve always been (which we both agreed on). He then issued me a summons. A day later I received a letter in the mail from the court stating I was in violation of my probation and that I needed to appear at a different date to explain to the judge why I was violating my probation.
Can animal control look over my fence? Am I not to expect a certain level of privacy in my own home? What if I had been back there sunbathing in the nude and does it make a difference if I was or not?
They didn’t have a warrant but they threatened to take my dogs away if I didn’t comply. That just feels fucked up to me, pardon my French.
What’s my angle in court? I cannot afford an attorney and the public defender they appointed me last time is a sleaze so that’s a no go.

2024.05.16 03:29 TaskAffectionate6316 Trello Alternatives?

Hi all,
I'm searching for a new tool to use now that Trello is ramping up costs and limits on workspaces/users. I've tried a few online but would love recommendations.
The use case: Providing my clients with a list of all deliverables required for their service to be completed using a Kanban or Scrum approach that defines each task with its due date, priority, responsible party, blocked by, attachments, comments etc.
It should be as accessible as possible as the clients tend to not be tech savvy so if the info is not visibility in 1-2 clicks it wont be actioned by them.
I want to be able to create a master template and apply it to each client project, each client project should be isolated from the others so there can be no access to a project the client doesn't have.
The client needs to be able to reply and update their assigned items.
The layout should look something like this.
Backlog - In progress client - In progress Company - Done
Bonus points:
If it has milestones, Gantt capabilities( that easily show dependencies!), the ability to share a filtered view to various stakeholders that updates in Realtime. Alternatively if it can feed easily into a Gantt program
Bonus bonus: If it integrates with Jira/slack/confluence

2024.05.16 03:29 daphuckisdis Selling w/ no tech stack - suggestions?

Hi all, would love to hear from fellow sales savages on this. How would you approach selling services to legal professionals with no tools like ZoomInfo, Sales Nav, Salesloft, etc. ? All you have is an existing network (LinkedIn) and the company you work for has existing and past clients. The obvious one I get, farm the existing and network where possible. But curious on other ideas! Oh, and territory is US/UK/EU

2024.05.16 03:25 DependentCalm5095 Thinking/considering a move to semi off grid Kootenays, BC from Montreal, QC

Hello dear fellow people,
Another 23589647th post about moving to BC.
Alright so this is the backstory, This is going to be a little long read;
So,
Been thinking about moving to BC from Montreal in the last few months/year, however this post might be different from previous topics posted here because the goal is kind of pretty different and specific;
Looking to experience a different lifestyle in a more quiet area to have some space and lone time while trying to have some social life around from time to time.
It would be a move to some small towns/remote vacant land with not so many people area the main reasons would be not to be around a lot of people and have a peace of mind and to live kind of secluded from the rest of the world and live in semi-autarchy and rely on almost nobody and do stuff like planting /harvesting fruits and vegetables /weed/mushrooms, own a shotgun for self defense and drive a F150, live with a woman and a dog/cat with that comes with it and not be bothered by anybody and be close to the outdoor (parks, ocean, beaches,...) but at the same time as stated earlier be able to participate to some social events from time to time.
It'd be mostly in the Kootenay Lake area which looks pretty nice and can be taken in consideration. The ideal dream would be going to some small towns around Nelson for example with some good communities nearby.
More likely to buy some small vacant land and build a cabin on it potentially. Sadly I don't have a lot of experience/skills in construction but twilling to learn.
About me: late 20s francophone immigrant from Europe who's been living in the country for quite a few years. Single no kids, trying to save as much money as possible.
Jobwise, it would be with a remote job so that wouldn't be an issue regarding bills and expenses but could rethink and reconsider another career path such as trades at some point, there are thoughts about living off the land but that's a whole other level of hardcore living.
Fully aware of the cost living in BC is abysmal (especially real estate) there, however with this lifestyle it might potentially be feasible somehow as expenses would be reduced and it could be the only way to own a home in this country.
There are some concerns and questions though;
People in BC are polite and chill but also passive/passive-aggressive, cliquey and not very accepting to foreigners. How hard is it to make friends there? Isn't there a big NIMBYism mindset in that area?
Since I'm a francophone from Europe, would that cause a problem? Used to live in Toronto and got some snarky remarks at times. Here in Montreal, it's okayish. Also you might find this a little silly, but would it be possible to access some services in French (ie healthcare)?
How is dating overall in BC? For sure options would be limited when you live in secluded areas for sure but how's that different from the east coast?
What about crime? someone from my home country got murdered while on a roadtrip westward to Vancouver.
How about the healthcare situation? Do you have to wait for hours in the ER to see someone? Does it also take months to see a doctospecialist? Is there good quality care though?
And then the wildfires? It really looked completely insane after having looked online and living close to a fire hazard area in the summer would be pretty worrying as it could burn down your house/cabin. With all the health related problems it would cause as well.
Are there any people in this group that are currently living this lifestyle and wouldn't mind sharing a little bit?
For the record, it's still being thought out and this move might happen within the next few years and is subject to change. You still have to learn on how to build and plan accordingly.
Plan on going on a roadtrip and live there for 6 months at least in about a year to taste the water (never been out west before).
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to answer!

2024.05.16 03:20 klavtr0n How to pick myself up, get my life back on track?

Here is a brief story of the last year or so: I had been working at a retail plant nursery for over 5 years, had worked in multiple departments and had picked up a fair amount of knowledge regarding plants even though its not a topic I'm passionate about. The job is something I just fell into and it was my first real job, and I am in fact 32. I had spent years in community college before then, could never get past the math hurdle when younger, and was mainly taking music classes.(if I can get past the math hurdle now, now might be the time to consider going back). I am a classical pianist, and very knowledgeable about classical music and I compose as well, but I do not have the heart I don't think, and maybe not the the level of talent or commitment or personality type to take it up professionally. But this is my passion in life. I love early keyboard instruments as well, like harpsichords and clavichords, and would love to learn woodworking to maintain and build them. I have had so many goals throughout my teens, 20s and up till now, that haven't had much practical use to me. Intense ambitions too. Now I believe I am being forced to redirect that energy and it is very hard for me. I am considering working at a retirement home, sending in an application to either be a server or something basic like that, while I finish up at community college. I have been without a job now for several months and live with my parents. I am not an undisciplined person really, in some ways I'm very disciplined. I practice all the time, and I have been a runner at times and meditated a fair amount. My body right now is very tight as well, and I have had to go to PT to do exercises. I fear I am very depressed although it may be largely situational. I am in a very deep hole and do not know how to get out. I know I need to take it one day at a time, and some days are indeed better than others. But I have absolutely no idea where to direct my energy. Therapy is simply not accessible, nor is career counseling. I have messaged a number of these professionals online and gotten no response. Another bit for background: I take a low dose of an antipsychotic and lithium. Lower than I used to take. Before I got my last job, I had been to the psych ward and gotten branded with the diagnoses schizoaffective, which is laughable now, because I take such a low dose and am fine. I have been addicted to pot in the past, but I no longer smoke. The last time I caved in was two months ago. It helps that it's not really at all enjoyable right now in my state of apathy and isolation. But I want to continue to stay far away from it, it doesn't help with memorizing music or general life motivation and is bad for my lungs.
I just don't know what my strengths are anymore, like I said, or where to begin. I was pretty good at the plant nursery with customer service, but boy did it drain me. I'd rather do more with my life. I wish I could focus this ramble more, but my level of motivation right now is so low.

2024.05.16 03:18 Lumpy-Advantage-8758 CB Mom Almost Ruins Housing for College Aged Son

Before I start, let me apologize for the “long-windedness” of my story. It required a bit of explanation about the context and my job.
I work in property management as a consultant In a college town on the East Coast of the US. As you can imagine, it’s a lot of young people. Oftentimes a lot of college kids won’t understand a lot of concepts like guarantors, conditional deposits, and so forth. I personally enjoy it a lot, especially as a full-time student myself. I love being able to interact with people my age, it’s easier to connect, and I get a lot of joy from helping people understand things like this. It’s makes a lot easier since I worked in a banking for a little while.
While a lot of people might think that this “lack of understanding” would cause a majority of the issues and “problematic” people we have to deal with, I would argue the opposite. In fact, I tend to deal with a particularly higher number of entitled parents rather than students. Like your typical helicopter parent who still desperately tries to control every aspect of their little angel’s life, often at the expense of the student. Anyways, I had an interaction earlier that I think took the cake for one of the MEANEST parents that I’ve met. Not in the traditional way of yelling, screaming, and whining until your ears bleed, but rather, bullying completely random college-aged people.
We’re coming to the beginning of the summer, which means that “college housing” (for those who don’t know) is wrapping up. This is because a lot of people (students and parents) prepare for the next school year during the previous school year. This includes choosing classes, getting jobs, and, importantly, finding housing. This is especially so for upperclassman (sophomores, juniors, and seniors), who don’t live on campus as much (it’s possible, but off-campus housing is often nicer and you don’t have to share a bedroom/dorm).
Because of the fact that we’re coming to the end of our leasing period, we’re quite short on available housing. We sell 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom houses. The leases last for a year and we often have people renew. That’s good for us as it means we have to sell less, it’s bad for the college students who want to live where we are because we’re a small community and places within the community are often pretty competitive. With that being said, there is a somewhat common situation that presents itself. This is when a student renews their lease (for example in a 4 bedroom home) while their other roommate(s) don’t. For more context, each person signs an individual lease. This means some people can stay in a house while other people leave.
In order to deal with this, my complex tries their best to “roommate” match. Essentially, try to match hobbies, interests, and personality types to minimize the conflict between random roommates. However, bear in mind this is not a “requirement”. We cater to a lot of students, but we aren’t a student-only housing complex. With that said, one of the incentives to roommate match for my complex is that they make more money from the individual leases (more people that sign-on the more money), however, it’s worth noting that this benefit does NOT extend to us as employees. We don’t make commission, so for us it’s really just trying to be nice when we do it, because it is a considerable amount of extra work.
Just because we try super hard to make people happy, it’s doesn’t mean everything always comes to fruition. People fight, don’t get along, or just don’t “match”. We understand this, but we try our best.
Anyways, we received a call from a mother earlier today, she’d been trying for weeks to get her son (a renewing resident who currently lives in a 4 bedroom by himself who roommates left after the lease ended), lets call her Karen. Let me stop here and say that I don’t blame the son at all for his mom’s behavior. Sometimes it’s hard to control or think of the actions of the person/people who raised us as “wrong”. Especially as the son or daughter of a person.
Karen had been trying for weeks to find roommates for her son. A stipulation of our leases is that if you knowingly resign a lease knowing that your other roommates will not be renewing, that you are either willing to take the given roommate assignment (which again, we try super hard to match as best as we can, but are not “required” to), so in the case of Karen’s son, 3 additional roommates. Karen had been shooting down all of our roommate matches for weeks. She had given one of my coworkers an earful when she found that she would not be the one officially approving or denying each applicant for her son (again, they are not “their” rooms to choose, they only pay for 1/4 bedrooms and within the unit). Following hanging up in her (my coworkers) face, it would seem that Karen decided that was either going to find her son the perfect roommates or get the whole townhome for her son, but either way she was NOT going to pay the nearly $2400 for the four bedrooms (each room is roughly $599).
So as mentioned, good ol’ Karen continues to shoot down every one of the roommates that we find for her son. Also bear in mind that we are NOT associate with the university, so the people that we are giving her are other applicants that we actively have to SEARCH for in order to find. But as mentioned Karen shoots one after another down. Finally, my manager asks Karen exactly what she wants (what kind of qualities, person, etc.). Karen wants a graduate student or young professional for her son. This in itself is not an unreasonable request, not everyone likes to party (despite the fact we are a party school) and we do try to accommodate requests such as these.
Today, three young applicants come along (actually, one came a few days ago, one yesterday, etc.). We'd been compiling this list of people to go into the home who met Karen's specifications for roommates. We were essentially going above-and-beyond for no reason other than just being patient with her demands (sounds dumb, but other customer service people get me ;) ).
So, today, my coworker calls Karen and explains the good news that we have found roommates that fit her specifications. Karen inquires about the qualities of the applicants, what they do, are they in school, etc. My coworker proceeds to explain that two of the students are graduate students, and one of the people is a young professional (fresh out of college). The ages were about the same between residents, gender and personalities matched, and the specifications set forth by Karen were pretty much met. However, upon hearing that the other roommates were grad-students, Karen very suddenly exclaimed "ew, I don't want my son with a bunch of nerds, find him someone else".
Like WTF, she's never met them, she had barely even heard about them. We had just pitched the idea to her, and they met HER specifications, and she has the gall to say that they're "too nerdy" for her son. I took over the call and ended it somewhat professionally as my coworker was about to (reasonably) lose it. The guys were perfectly nice and seemed friendly, had similar hobbies, among other things. It's such a shame to see a GROWN-ADULT (Karen is 55 according to her profile with the company) bully actual college students. Especially completely and unnecessarily calling them nerds (which, for the record, just wasn't true, as when I met one of the guys he was JACKED), and even if he was, why do you have to say it?
Anyways, sorry for the super long rant, shoutout to my fellow college students, we'll see how it goes tomorrow when I get back to work (c'est la vie).
TL:DR: Karen complains that the roommates we found are too "nerdy" for her son, despite asking for their type specifically.

2024.05.16 03:17 proteamom Dealer didn’t provide paperwork from the purchase- new normal?

I purchased a 2024 Subaru Forester this weekend. It ended up going late into the evening so somehow I didn’t notice that when they were handing me pamphlets ands such about the car I wasn’t given a copy of all the forms I’d signed. Like nothing. No copy of the sales contract. No copy of my trade in. No copy of anything.
I had to go back to the dealership and I requested the sales contract just so I could have a date for when the first payment will be. But when I told them I didn’t receive any paperwork they acted like they didn’t understand what I was looking for. Now granted the last time I purchased a vehicle was 6 years ago and maybe things are more electronic now? I thought a physical copy of everything was typical to receive?
Am I just feeling weird about this for nothing?
Note I’m still waiting to schedule a service for replacing/upgrading the rear view mirror that I included in the purchase. I don’t even have paperwork that proves that was paid for…. I was just told when the part comes in I’ll get a call. This is Florida.

2024.05.16 03:01 Mobile-Break2697 Should I study Telecommunications or Cloud?

Thank you to all whom provide feedback. Please feel free to offer any additional advice or suggestions about a future in IT/Networking.
Long story short - IT major, studying for CCNA, interested in a career in networking. Would a telecom or cloud course benefit me in terms of career longevity, job security and/or relevancy?

2024.05.16 02:58 Acct_jst_4_Qs Former (fired) employee falsely claiming they were given an oral agreement of ownership and other equity in business and is threatening to sue. Any input appreciated!

Throw away since I know this former employee is on Reddit.
This is in regards to a small, privately owned retail business in an at-will state.
Usually oral agreement issues are employees being shafted by owners/managers/etc. that the latter may have orally agreed to about X, Y, or Z to an employee. It has actually been difficult to find online search results that are reversed, which is the case I am experiencing with a former employee (let's call them Alex, in a gender-neutral manner to reduce revealing private info about them) - Alex is claiming that they were promised a large portion of ownership of the business as well as equity related to recent, large product investments.
We had to fire Alex because of prolonged, catalogued/tracked service quality and professionalism issues, as well as strong suspicion (and eventual solid evidence discovered post termination) of theft. The service quality and professionalism issues were discussed with Alex numerous times, and naturally known to other employees working alongside them. Eventually, after numerous continued issues and verbal warnings, Alex was formally written up and we had them sign the notes covered in the meeting. After a couple more months of still declining service quality, and odd, suspicious behavior that strongly indicated theft as mentioned, we were forced to terminate employment. We provided Alex with a fairly standard release form which essentially said "we won't sue you and you won't sue us, and if you sign you get 4 weeks of severance pay." Alex did not sign the form. Alex found new employment about 4 weeks after termination and to my knowledge has not filed for unemployment for the few weeks between jobs.
As mentioned, we later confirmed not only theft, but Alex was selling the stolen goods online while undercutting our prices and then even using the store's financial accounts to purchase shipping labels for their online customers to ship the stolen goods to them. We have screenshots of their Ebay account, along with pictures they took showing of the goods where their hand is visible with recognizable jewelry seen by all the staff before Alex was terminated (so we can confirm it's Alex in the pictures they posted). There is strong evidence of other theft but it is more difficult to prove.
Re: the oral agreement - it should be noted that I did in fact make an oral agreement with Alex, but of which is very different than the one they are claiming was made. Because Alex was our first employee and worked with us for over 5 years, I agreed that if the business was to ever grow to say another storefront, I would allow Alex to buy in for an undetermined percent of the business (probably around 10% at most). That is it. I've maintained that this was the agreement to Alex, my wife, and employees for a number of years, never changing the details of the arrangement. Unfortunately Alex made these poor service quality and theft decisions and was terminated before the business was able to grow into an additional store (still not a possibility at the moment and probably for another couple of years), thus the agreement is now null and void. This agreement was NOT written down or signed by either party (and thus no witnesses either).
Alex is claiming that they were promised to be given (yes, given, not just allowed to buy in) ownership up to 50% of the current business and 20%-30% or so of the value of recent product investments, of which would likely be in excess of $100,000 together. Alex's claim is absolutely not true. There is no paperwork, signatures, witnesses, etc. that would be able to confirm this unless they are going to forge something or have people lie for them. However, I am concerned about this because I otherwise do not have proof that this was not the agreement...
Our two current employees, aware of this situation, and aware of (and witness to) the poor and odd behavior of the former employee that led to their termination (including the theft), are more than willing to testify that Alex's claim is not the case. Alex even spoke to them about thinking about drafting a letter to me about a 7% ownership stake, which they never did. If they were orally promised such a great deal of ownership why would they need to draft a letter for only 7%? Unfortunately Alex has recruited the wrath of their parents (who they lived with for 6 years straight and just moved into an apartment, Alex is in their 30s.) who are going to bankroll them a lawyer. I would imagine that Alex has been telling their parents for some time now (like years) that there was some sort of oral agreement about ownership more in the line of their false claims (to the specifics I am not sure) and they have been able to convince them that their child is telling the truth. So Alex's parents could very well feel like they're telling the truth when they say their child told them about this crazy 50% stake and equity when in fact it was a lie. But how do I prove that? Do I need to prove that?
Here's where it gets a little more complicated - Alex's father (who I miss, he was a good guy) is handy and built a majority of the counters, drawers, storage, display tables, etc. in the storefront for free (he refused payment for the labor, but I paid for all the materials of which I have receipts for). Alex is claiming that because their father built all this furniture, it is "proof" that they were promised part ownership and equity (because why else would their father be so generous?...). But that is not the case, their father just wanted to help and participate in any way he could as he is nearing retirement and wanting to take on new activities. The employee may have been cultivating this false assumption that such construction is proof of promised partnership with their fathefamily from the start, although their father never mentioned anything like that to me.
The personal and professional betrayal aside, I'm concerned about Alex levying such accusations of ridiculous grand promises via oral agreement since it is so hard to confirm either way, and given this person's proclivity of lying (and stealing) I have little trust they will act in good faith if any legal proceedings unfold. I would love any advice on how to possibly handle this issue. Wouldn't the onus be on Alex to prove these grand promises? Given the little I have listed above, what "evidence" might be in their favor? How concerning is it that their parents are fully convinced their child has been wronged (I also know that Alex is telling friends and new coworkers the reason they were fired was because of me not wanting to "give" them part of the business)? It seems ridiculous a parent's perspective would hold much weight in actual legal environments since they would be so biased. Should I be concerned there is no written agreement about any of these promises (including the legitimate one about eventual opportunity to buy in)? Anything about their father volunteering their labor? Is it a good thing that our current employees are willing to testify (on their own volition, I didn't even ask them) about their own first hand experiences and conversations with Alex that contradicts many of Alex's statements? Anything else potentially troublesome I should be aware of?
Yes, lots of lessons learned here - get things in writing for my own protection against such claims. Unfortunately that is not the case here, so advice geared around the fact that no party has much to support their claims (well, I'm only claiming their claim is false) would be most helpful. Please let me know if you have any clarifying questions or need more information for better input. I really appreciate your time and consideration!

I'm applying to junioassociate/level 1 SWE roles so its not like i'm competing with people with 10 YEO. are ex-faang, ex-jane street people really applying to these kinds of places? because who else could those "other candidates" be?

2024.05.16 02:48 ThrowRA_DrGoth I (24F) am scared of my ex-boyfriend (31M) and I'm not sure what next steps to take?

I'll keep this brief with few descriptors, since I know my ex-boyfriend frequents reddit. I dated this guy (we were 22F and 29M at the time) for about a year. It was a tumultuous and toxic relationship. He hit me once during an argument. A few times, we would have what started as consensual sex but would turn into him being very violent and causing me a lot of pain, and when I expressed this to him, he still did not stop engaging in sex with me; One time he started having sex with me while I was still sleeping, and when I woke up and told him I was in pain, he still didn't stop (is any of this rape/assault? It didn't feel right). He currently has an active restraining order from an ex-girlfriend who claims he abused and threatened her. He was arrested once a few years ago for violating the order because he signed into one of her accounts. Last night, I got a notification that someone in the city that he lives in signed into one of my personal accounts, and I am 99% sure it is him. He currently holds a well-respected, well-paying, successful job in healthcare and works with young children and vulnerable adults. It's been about 8 months since we officially cut off contact. Should I get a restraining order so he doesn't sign into more of my accounts? Should I report the incident when he hit me? Is anything that occurred between us sexually reportable? I have no evidence and it has been almost a year since all of this occurred. My biggest fears are that he will retaliate. I have no evidence that any of this occurred, and it is essentially my word against his (a well-respected medical professional, though he does have this restraining order on him going against him). I'm also in a wonderful relationship with a new guy right now, and I'm scared of him finding out about my past. Overall, I'm scared he'll sign into more of my accounts. I've changed every password that I could think of. What should I do? Do I have an obligation to report him to the medical licensing board considering his past behaviors? Would they even do anything? Please help!

2024.05.16 02:48 oldpooper Was United ticketing hacked?

A ticket I bought in march for a flight this weekend. I signed into United’s website and the ticket disappeared from my account. I looked in my phone app and my ticket was moved into a cart with a higher price. WTF?! I checked my credit card just to be sure I wasn’t losing my mind and sure nuff, I paid for the ticket and seat upgrade. I called the airline and they tried to give me a free gift. I said I just wanted to find my missing ticket. Customer service for reservations said she wasn’t authorized for that but she said she would transfer me (she said all of this swiftly like she didn’t want confrontation). I was transferred to another promotion phone call. ??? Eventually I got to an attendant who found my ticket. The only info I had was my name, the airports, the day I bought the ticket, and the date/time I was leaving. No flight number, no confirmation. It took less than two minutes to find my reservation and he said that the ticket was not tied to my account. I never gave him my account number. I bought the ticket while signed into my account. I’m a seasoned flyer and choose United 90% of the time. I bought the ticket the same way I always do: from my account. Both people I talked to seemed…. Off? All I can come up with is perhaps there was a hack of some sort. Has anyone else experienced this today or this week?
