OUSD (R&E) CRITICAL TECHNOLOGY AREA(S): Advanced Materials

The technology within this topic is restricted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), 22 CFR Parts 120-130, which controls the export and import of defense-related material and services, including export of sensitive technical data, or the Export Administration Regulation (EAR), 15 CFR Parts 730-774, which controls dual use items. Offerors must disclose any proposed use of foreign nationals (FNs), their country(ies) of origin, the type of visa or work permit possessed, and the statement of work (SOW) tasks intended for accomplishment by the FN(s) in accordance with the Announcement. Offerors are advised foreign nationals proposed to perform on this topic may be restricted due to the technical data under US Export Control Laws.

OBJECTIVE: The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) seeks to promote responsive, best value supplies of related materials, components, and systems to Department of Defense (DoD) customers and other DoD stakeholders. DLA investigates advancements in technologies and business processes for new and improved materials, more efficient means of their production, and competitive domestic supply chains which will lead to greater innovation in current and future defense systems combined with benefits to other commercial and government applications.
DLA is interested in exploring future defense industrial base uses for scandium (Sc) because of its unique properties as a pure metal and, as an alloying agent, to significantly increase the performance of traditional aluminum (Al) alloys, and therefore expand the use of Al alloys. Further benefits include, substituting aluminum-scandium (Al-Sc) alloys for incumbent expensive materials (e.g., titanium) and/or replacing material forms that are both costly and difficult to source (e.g., forging, complex machined parts, and extrusions), as Al-Sc alloys are highly compatible with additive manufacturing techniques.
Scandium can impart high strength properties to Al alloys which allows for reduced weight designs (compared to traditional Al alloy) and components for a wide range of defense platforms and other military items. Al-Sc alloys exhibit increased resistance to high temperature and corrosion when compared to common Al alloys. Of further interest, is the high weldability of Al-Sc alloy. Alloys with high weldability can reduce manufacturing labor and other costs associated with joining components and structures. Al-Sc alloy can be especially useful when used as a powder or wire in additive manufacturing. Potential DoD applications for Al-Sc alloy include the production and sustainment of missiles, aircraft, space launch vehicles, satellites, solider systems, military ground vehicles, marine applications, and other weapon systems (e.g., small arms and artillery).
While Sc metal has many attractive material characteristics, its cost is frequently considered prohibitive for Al alloying purposes compared to other alloying elements. In addition, the supply of Sc metal and compounds is limited and highly concentrated in a small number of foreign countries including China and Russia. As such, there is reluctance to develop wide scale uses for Al-Sc alloys for many applications including DoD weapon systems and large-scale non-defense applications (e.g., commercial aviation and automotive manufacturing).

In the United States mining operations for Sc ore are being planned and developed to feed a domestic supply chain and, recently, new sources of Sc now exist in Canada (an important member country of DoD’s National Technology Industrial Base). There are also established defense industrial base companies and other businesses in both countries that can significantly contribute to development and commercialization of Al-Sc supply chains for both military and commercial applications.

Given the important properties of Sc, and in anticipation of increased affordable domestic supply, DLA is interested in engaging small businesses with the capability to develop and expand expertise and industrial base production capacity of Sc-containing materials, especially in areas relevant to the supply of Al-Sc alloy components for DoD end-uses.

Specific materials, processing and manufacturing areas of interest include:

  • Raw material refining
  • High purity Sc metals, compounds, and alloys
  • Additive manufacturing feedstock
  • Additively manufactured DoD systems prototype parts

Research and Development (R&D) efforts selected under this topic shall demonstrate and involve a degree of risk where the technical feasibility of the proposed work has not been fully established. Further, proposed efforts must be judged to be at a Technology and/or Manufacturing Readiness Level (TRL/MRL) 6 or less, but greater than TRL/MRL 3 to receive funding consideration.

TRL 3. (Analytical and Experimental Critical Function and/or Characteristic Proof of Concept)
TRL 6. (System/Subsystem Model or Prototype Demonstration in a Relevant Environment)

DESCRIPTION: DLA seeks SBIR project opportunities in new and innovative materials, processing, and manufacturing of Sc compounds, Sc metal, Al-Sc alloy and master alloys, and related areas of additive manufacturing. While Al and Sc are the primary metals of interest for this solicitation, it is anticipated that additional alloying elements may be included to tailor the final alloy properties. Specific areas of interest include:

  • Processing mining ores (and/or scrap waste streams) into high purity Sc compounds (ex., Sc-oxide) feedstock for production of pure Sc metal, Al-Sc alloy, master alloys, etc.
  • Commercial production of high purity Sc metal (domestic feedstock preferred)
  • Commercial production of Al-Sc alloy powder and wire for additive manufacturing
  • Demonstrating additively manufactured Al-Sc alloy parts for DoD weapon systems.

DLA seeks opportunities that include strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in Sc materials processing, as well as strong collaboration with traditional or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers. DLA similarly desires SBIR opportunities that include collaboration with interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organizations.

PROJECT DURATION and COST: Proposals exceeding these limits will not be evaluated.
PHASE I: Not to exceed a duration of 12 months and cost of $100,000.
PHASE II: Not to exceed a duration of 24 months and cost of $1,000,000.

PHASE I: Phase I will demonstrate proof of concept in one or more of the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing. A technology development and commercialization roadmap will be produced along with a preliminary business case analysis for transition and industrial scale up. Strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing is expected, along with involvement of one or more traditional or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers. Strong support from one or more interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organization required.

PHASE II: Depending on Phase I results, Phase II will consist of establishing pilot scale or low-rate production of technologies that are successfully demonstrated in Phase I. Additional activities may include further materials and processing testing, characterization, and data base development of related materials and processes that can be used by future producers of scandium materials of interest (e.g., compounds, metals, alloys, and master alloys as well as related additive manufacturing powders and wire, and fabricators of aluminum scandium end-items). Development of a detailed business case analysis and commercialization plan will be required.

Strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing, along with involvement from traditional and/or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers, is required, along with strong support from interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organizations.

Innovative materials and processes, and commercially viable sources of their supply, shall be developed with the goal to readily transition to production in support of DoD and its supply chains.
PHASE III DUAL USE APPLICATIONS: Phase III is any proposal that derives from, extends or completes a transition from a Phase I or II project. Phase III proposals will be accepted after the completion of Phase I and or Phase II projects.
There is no specific funding associated with Phase III, except Phase III is not allowed to use SBISTTR coded funding. Any other type of funding is allowed.
Phase III proposal Submission. Phase III proposals are emailed directly to DLA SBIR2@dla.mil. The PMO team will set up evaluations and coordinate the funding and contracting actions depending on the outcome of the evaluations. A Phase III proposal should follow the same format as Phase II for the content and format. There are, however, no limitations to the amount of funding requested, or the period of performance. All other guidelines apply.

Transition Plan
  1. Period of Performance: TBD
  2. Budget: $ TBD

This Phase of the project should include:
  1. Delivery of a production level product to J68 ready for integration into the overall DLA Enterprise system.
  2. Develop a sustainment plan to support the delivered system for the lifetime of the program.

  1. Conclusions Noting that AA7075-T6 is widely used by both fixed- and rotary-wing military aircraft, as well as in space structures, the initial objective of this study was to directly compare crack growth in identical AA7075-T6 and Scalmalloy specimens tested in the same servohydraulic facility under the same stresses and by the same operators. The experimental data reveal that Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems AM-built Scalmalloy appears to be more damage tolerant than the conventionally built aluminium alloy AA7075-T6. As a result, Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems printed Scalmalloy would appear to be particularly attractive for use on a range of military aircraft, as well as for space applications. It also highlights the potential for Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems Scalmalloy to be used to extend the operational lives of military aircraft through the on-demand printing of limited life Scalmalloy replacement parts. The results of this initial test program have led to the hypothesis that the da/dN versus ∆K curves associated with Scalmalloy and conventionally built AA2024-T3 should be similar. This hypothesis was, subsequently, validated by comparison to AA2024-T3 da/dN versus ∆K curves taken from the Nasgro database. This observation subsequently led to the conjecture that the small crack da/dN versus ∆K curves associated with Scalmalloy and AA2024-T3, which are needed for a durability analysis, should be similar. If this hypothesis can be confirmed, then given that: (i) Scalmalloy has a yield stress significantly greater than that of AA2024-T3; (ii) AA2024-T3 is widely used in both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft; (iii) MIL-STD-1530D mandates that there must be no yield at 100% DLL and the US Joint Services Structural Guidelines JSSG2006 states that there should be no yield at 115% DLL, the use of Scalmalloy for both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, and drones would appear to be very attractive. As such, the next stage in the study will involve the determination of valid upper bound da/dN versus ∆K curves for the growth of short cracks in AA2024-T3.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (August 14, 2023) – A phased program to establish U.S. commercial production of aluminum-scandium (“AlSc”) master alloy took another step forward recently as NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:NB) (TSX:NB) and its development partner Nanoscale Powders LLC (“Nanoscale”) successfully produced scandium metal at pilot-scale at a facility owned and operated by Creative Engineers in Pennsylvania.
The next step in the pilot-scale program is to produce kilogram-sized ingots of AlSc master alloy for independent testing and commercial product samples. The first of these AlSc master alloy ingots is expected to be produced in the coming weeks.

Three-Phase Commercialization Program

NioCorp and Nanoscale are pursuing a three-phased development plan for commercial production of AlSc master alloy. The goal of this program is to achieve full-scale AlSc master alloy production at approximately the same time as the Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Elk Creek Project”) achieves commercial operation and planned production of approximately 100 tonnes per year of scandium oxide.
  1. Pilot scale batch production of 10 kilogram master alloy ingots**. Master alloy produced will be fully analyzed (metals and gases) at independent test facilities. Ingot samples will be available for third-party examination and prospective customer testing / sampling.**
  2. Commercial demonstration production of 100 kg ingots**. NioCorp expects to perform this work at a third-party ingot casting facility, which is expected to significantly reduce development timelines and cost as well as leverage existing facility permits and operator experience. The objective of this stage will be to optimize the production process and operating conditions.**
  3. Full scale commercial production of master alloy**. Assuming successful results at the pilot scale and commercial demonstration stages, and once project financing is obtained, NioCorp intends to secure an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contractor to construct, start up, and commission a full-scale production facility with the capacity to consume up to the Elk Creek Project’s projected scandium production of approximately 100 tonnes (Sc metal contained in master alloy) per year. NioCorp intends to co-locate the full-scale production facility with the Elk Creek Project in Nebraska in order to take advantage of the infrastructure (i.e., low-cost power, water, and natural gas) that will be in place for mining operations.**
NioCorp and Nanoscale also plan to develop recycling approaches for scrap alloy, including work-in-process material and post-production scrap.

***SEE RESPONSES FROM NIOCORP/JIM SIMS FROM AUGUST 14, 2023 ~Good morning - Jim!

While waiting for Niocorp’s 2023 F.S. Release… The announcement for Scandium Alloy Production & Scandium alloy funding are most welcome!

Leading me to add to my line of questions regarding Scandium & (Niocorp).

A) Would Niocorp qualify for a portion of this recent funding once approved by Congress? Moving forward.
RESPONSE:

"This funding was placed in the FY24 DoD Appropriations bill at the request of Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, for the purpose of helping to fund NioCorp's effort to establish domestic commercial production of AlSc master alloy. There is always a process within the DoD to select appropriate projects with funding provided to it by Congress. In this case, however, the House and Senate Armed Services Committees provided additional guidance to DoD on this topic in their respective National Defense Authorization bills, including prioritizing domestic production of such materials. "

Next Question ~ For context:

(Imperial mining, CleanTech, & Scandium International all have patents on Scandium & Sc aluminum alloy products. Rio Tinto has established a North American domestic supply(@15 tons/year with expansion capabilities) & has established a working relationship with Boeing.
Niocorp has produced Scandium aluminum with both IBC (under Chris Huskamp now with Jabil) & with Ames Lab, but has yet to patent any process or materials.
Niocorp has established a working relationship with Nanoscale to produce patentable Scandium Aluminum products in the years ahead…)
Jim-
B) How Does/will Niocorp’s expected Scandium production & future patentable Scandium materials be utilized by management moving forward? Once realized…. ; and How do/would they compare to those materials & alloys already developed or patented?
RESPONSE:

"Latent markets for scandium oxide and aluminum-scandium master alloy – both commercial and military -- are quite large, and we are working with a number of potential scandium consumers and related technology companies interested in scandium. We will make announcements in this area as developments require. In general, we don’t comment on detailed commercial business strategies except in the course of necessary announcements and/or public filings. "

C) In addition to Niocorp’s collaboration with NanoScale. Is Niocorp currently working/engaged with other entities such as (Ames Lab, DoD, DoE, Chris Huskamp/Jabil & others) on Scandium Materials/patents?
Or on Niobium, Titanium, or Rare Earth future products (Oxides, Magnets…)
Please comment where possible.
RESPONSE:

"There are multiple such engagements ongoing now for each product in our planned product offering. In general, we don’t comment on commercial business strategies except in the course of necessary announcements and/or public filings. "

D) Are other Entities besides EXIM Bank and Stellantis still interested as possible Debt/Equity finance or Anchor Investos partners moving foward?
Leading to a Final Elk Creek Finance package?
RESPONSE:

"YES!"

The committee recognizes that China is a major producer of high-purity scandium oxide, which has many powerful applications in defense technologies, including strengthening and light-weighting defense and commercial aviation systems. As scandium oxide pro-duction is established in the United States, a missing supply chain component is the conversion of scandium from its oxide form to aluminum-scandium (AlSc) master alloy. This process step is required for utilization of U.S.-mined scandium by many defense applications. At present, production capacity of AlSc master alloy is limited to one facility in the United States. The committee recognizes that the United States may soon become a major producer of highpurity scandium oxide by virtue of a proposed mine and mineral processing project in Nebraska. The committee recognizes the defense-wide importance of a vertical domestic supply chain for both Scandium Oxide and AlSc master alloy and the critical importance of both materials for the production of air-, land-, and sea-based combat systems.

2024.05.16 01:25 HappySpam Best way to feed a new tank for the first time without killing everyone?

Hey all, I'm happy to say that my tank seems to be successful so far and on day 3 there are around 7-10 little tiny baby sea monkeys swimming around in my Volcano tank! I put both the water purifier and egg packet in together at the same time, since I know they both just contain salt and eggs and wanted to just have them all hatch together.
Now, here comes the part in not sure about, what's the best way to feed the sea monkeys for the first time? I remember when I was a kid this was the part when I killed them all after 1 feeding. Should I wait until the 5th day to feed, and just give a half scoop of the tiny end of the spoon? Or just full scoop of the tiny end? Or better to wait longer?
I do have a water heater and bubbler inside the tank as well.

2024.05.16 01:23 Wan_Haole_Faka How much of this industry can be learned in an educational program compared to learning in the field? Is one better than the other?

I'm a 3rd year apprentice service plumber and am thinking about switching to a different trade. I'm considering refrigeration and boiler maintenance/install.
I think what draws me to this trade is the fact that you can work alone (how soon?), the general challenges of diagnosing and fixing something and I'm wondering how decent the money is as well.
I'm frankly getting a little bored with plumbing. I understand the systems that I work on. I just started with a new company and they unfortunately decided to pair me with someone who has less than half my experience and he's the "technician". So they pay me $22/hr. to train him, meanwhile I'm not building skills and am bored out of my mind. I could always memorize which shower cartridges go with what valve, but I think it would be wiser to gain a good understanding of the refrigeration cycle (which I know I can do) and apply that to my skillset.
This is the second plumbing company I've worked for and I've found it hard to get good training past a certain point. I learned a lot by making mistakes. I've found that the veteran guys will get put together because they can finish jobs faster and the newer guys seem to work together.
I do a lot of diagnostics on water heaters and sewage ejector pumps, so I know how to use a multimeter in a basic way.
I could test for my license in NC immediately if I wanted to, or if I wanted to test for a national journeyman's, I could have it in 3 years. I'm not attached to being licensed in anything, I just want to earn a good income. I'd go back to school for an intensive program if it's worth it.
I'm 33 and single, so I'd be good with some late/on call work, but it's not something I'd like to make a habit of long-term.
Being in the South, I've never been involved with a labor union, but I'd be curious to know if there are any purely refrigeration unions. Would that just go along with pipefitting/HVAC?
I think it would also help me if I knew whether there were companies hiring directly from reefer programs and if so, would they guarantee a certain pay floor with a good grade?
I appreciate any tips you all have. Thanks!

2024.05.16 00:56 LaCroixFarts Salty water in house

About once a week, after we got service done on our tankless water heater, the water in our house has been getting salty for one day a week. It lasts sporadically throughout the day then goes away. I imagine it's a problem with the GE water softener and wondering if there might be a fix for this. The recharge is set for 2 am but still encountering salty water throughout the day.

2024.05.16 00:50 glebbwy Mold in home, health issues, and mold inspection results

Hello mold subreddit. First time reddit poster here. Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer to my case. In what follows, I'm going to first describe the health journey that led to my mold discoveries and questions, so please bear with me through the health stuff. I have included excessive detail in the hopes that my case might help others navigate possible mold problems.
If you don't feel like reading all the below, the tl:dr version: After struggling with unknown health issues for 15 months, I eventually linked my symptoms to my new home and subsequently discovered very high volatile organic chemical levels. I linked the VOCs to mold. I also had a mold inspection done, and the results are at the bottom of this post. The levels of mold were high in my kitchen and bathroom. However, oddly, the mold levels in the outside control group were much higher than inside. Can anyone help me understand how high my indoor mold levels are? Does anyone know whether the outdoor levels are reasonably normal? Is my specific blend of mold types implicated in neurological symptoms for others? And if anyone has dealt with mold before, do my possible mold symptoms described below seem similar to ones that you've had?
I bought my townhome in late 2022. Within four months, I started having new neurological symptoms. These symptoms started with a postural tremor in my left index finger and thumb. The same hand eventually began to appear smaller and shriveled, especially around my thumb. I also started having extremely frequent muscle twitches and jerks. These twitches take three general forms:
  1. The most common is an odd sensation of something wiggling under my skin. These primarily happen in my face, around my mouth, my butt/legs, and ribs.
  2. A pulsing regular beat in a muscle that lasts for several seconds and in some cases longer. These usually happen near joints, especially just above my elbows and knees. These are almost always visible to the naked eye.
  3. A sensation of rapid vibrating underneath the skin that lasts briefly. These vibrations are usually not visible but you can feel them if you press a hand over the area.
The twitches and apparent change to my hand have lasted for 16 months. At this point, the tissue loss in my thumb is also apparent in my forearm and upper left arm. My leg on the same side arm appears different and feels as if it has lost some muscle. I also have frequent trembling with specific muscles when I flex them. For example, sometimes when I try to hold a smile my face muscles will shake or give out. My neck tissues are especially liable to shake and vibrate when flexed, such as when doing tasks like flossing where I need to hold my lips back. On a few separate occasions, I have felt slight paralysis on one side of my face for an evening or so that then mysteriously goes away.
Aside from these neurological symptoms, I also have had frequent hoarseness, sneezing, jaw pain, and headaches. My joints often feel like they are more bony and poppy, especially in my left knee and knuckles. In addition, I've had a lot of issues with one ear on the same side as the shriveled hand. The ear had an apparent infection or cloudiness 12 months ago that went away, it then had recurrent pulsatile tinnitus, and now it just occasionally hurts at random times. There have been many other symptoms.
I have seen two neurologists, an endocrinologist, an ear-nose-throat doctor, and an orthopedic doctor. I've had countless tests done including two electromyographies (EMGs) over my whole body several months apart, an MRI, and a lyme disease blood panel. Every test has been normal, although the orthopedic doctor suggested possible thoracic outlet syndrome. The neurologist said my nerves are quite robust. My borrelia blood panel came back negative, although as a side note I did have a tick bite in early 2022 that caused a rash. I was treated for Lyme with 10 days of doxycycline. The tick bite itself still occasionally flares up red and its timing might be correlated with my symptoms.
Back to the house-- I was on a two week vacation out of state and noticed my twitches go away. Then I saw my arm become more normal sized again and the veins start to come back. I didn't feel the same joint issues, had no hoarseness, lost the headaches. All the symptoms came back as soon as I returned home, but nevertheless after that vacation and subsequent extended trips, I was able to conclude with a reasonable level of confidence that these symptoms are linked to the house. I bought an air filter and an air quality monitor that shows volatile organic chemicals, PM, formaldehyde, and C02.
Using the air quality monitor, I discovered that volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and formaldehyde were usually abnormally high and sometimes extremely high. VOCs are usually above safety thresholds at >0.5 mg/m3 and formaldehyde >0.1 mg/m3. Sometimes, the VOC levels will stay consistently above 1.8mg/m3. I witnessed them reach a peak level of 5mg/3 in one bedroom late at night when I was woken up by a feeling of shortness of breath. I tried but failed to correlate these high VOCs to electronics, chemical sources in the home, cooking sources, heaters, and cleaning supplies. The way the VOCs would spike all over the house for no apparent reason in the evening helped me rule out some of these other possibilities. I also actively removed other sources.
Eventually, I realized that the VOCs were likely caused by mold, so-called microbial VOCs. The formaldehyde could also be explained by mold. The levels of VOCs would spike on rainy days, when the humidity was high inside, and in the evening. I don't think any other chemical source near the house would display this pattern. It took me a while to reach this conclusion because the mold issue in my house isn't too obvious. The house has always had a slight musty smell, especially if the air is stagnant for a while. The bathroom also has recurring mold growth on a tiles, in the shower, and on the various shower liners. A couple cabinets in the kitchen have always smelled musty. I didn't think these obvious signs of mold growth were that big of a deal, but given the extremely high levels of VOCs I now believe the mold has always been the issue.
Once I realized it was likely mold, I started noticing all the signs. The house is about 100 years old. The prior two owners of this house each moved out within five months. The house is not ventilated except from windows. It sits in a damp area near where water puddles up in the yard. It's mostly solid brick, so the house frame has a way of trapping hot air and releasing a lot of moisture onto the floors each evening. There's also a cheap layer of vinyl flooring throughout that could easily cover up a massive mold problem underneath. Finally, the townhome sits on top of an old shared crawl space that was used as a furnace. It has had known water puddling issues for which reason a vapor guard was installed underneath my first floor.
So, I had a mold inspection done. The results are at the bottom of this post. The bathroom results might be diluted because I left the window open the night before. Nevertheless, both my kitchen and bathroom had mold detected at levels between 6480 - 12,300 spores/m3. Oddly, the outdoor levels of all of the molds were often much higher, 3-6 fold higher than the levels indoors. It was a humid day, but it still seems odd for me that an outdoor space could have higher levels than indoors.
On later reading about my specific mold spores and neurological symptoms, I noticed that the two most elevated groups of spores in my house, ascospores and basidiospores, are the same class as all of the funguses known to have colonized the nervous system of ALS patients according to this published article. Those specific types of fungus found in the nerves of ALS patients are Candida, Malassezia, Fusarium, Botrytis, Trichoderma, and Cryptococcus. It naturally led me to wonder if my chronic als-type neurological symptoms could be caused by some latent fungal infection in my body that gradually improves when I'm away from the home.
Wrapping up this thread, I have a bunch of questions.

2024.05.16 00:22 RickyRambler Water hammer?

Water hammer?
Occasionally I'll hear what I believe to be water hammer sounds in my house. My house is 25 years old with copper plumbing throughout. Most of it is in a finished basement and so it is hard to pinpoint exactly where it is coming from. Also it also seems very random which makes it even more difficult to find. It seems to have become more pronounced since I had a tankless water heater put in a couple years ago. It also happens when there is no water running but also can happen when a shower or sink is in use too. The plumbers that installed it also added a small expansion tank (see pictures). I love the tankless system and drain it annually but am wondering if I should be concerned, does the expansion tank need adjusted and/or possibly suggestions on how to deal with it? Thanks for any advice.

2024.05.15 23:58 DaeDream_ Advice on whether to buy or not based on what realtor is saying

I’ve just got my inspection report on a house. The house was made built in 2004 and is a single story in Texas. I got accepted for 205k with 10k back in credits. The inspection showed that it had termite at the back door, roof was orginal and was leaking in 3 spots, ac and furnace is original too and they don’t know when it’s going to fail. It also has small stuff like dishwasher supply hose leaking, water heater (2021) leaking at the top where it’s connects to ceiling and other smaller things like lights. My realtor is saying that it would be hard to get them to give us a brand new roof and she is getting an estimate for the fix and how much a roof would cost. She says that for what the house is it’s good because the other houses we looked at the same price range with new ac, furnace and roof would be out of my price range. We had looked at other houses in the range and they were not good. She says that the we should have them just fix the roof and the termites and see if the 10k in credits would cover the roof and ac. What do you guys think the best thing to do in this situation is?

2024.05.15 23:53 kiltedfrog I'll make my own Star Trek! With catgirls and turtle waifus.

The Communist captain gave me a disgusted look, but then I realized it wasn't me that caused him such disgust, but my bride behind me. I closed the comms channel. xenophobic dickhead.
The tractor beam interrupted the functioning of the gravity plates that had been installed in our brand new two hundred year old ship. They were supposed to work without power for at least twenty minutes. I had paid some attention to the briefing on the ship's systems, just not... really good attention, which was regretting Nyany let out yelp of surprise. She hadn't spent months in zero g training. I grabbed her hand and since I was still bolted to the pilot's seat I easily helped her into her seat where she strapped in.
"Thanks," She smiled at me and blinked slowly. "It's been a couple centuries since my zero-g training. Felidians do not do well in zero gravity."
We sat there for a moment holding hands, getting pulled toward the big grey communist warship, watching in silent horror. I squeezed her hand, and she squeezed back.
And then from every speaker in the cockpit, an alarm started to blare.
Torpedo Alert
A high speed flash of red, I'm guessing the torpedo, smashed into the great grey slab. It came from behind and above us, and very very close. The torpedo lodged right in the protruding tractor beam emitter, disabling it before it exploded.
The explosion rocked us backward and shook our relatively small craft.
Another torpedo seemed to come from our ship and hit the communist ship in the open hole the first one made before it too detonated. Then a visible energy shield appeared around the great warship.
We received a hail from... I hoped whoever was shooting torpedoes at the commies, the computer couldn't identify the source.
Much to my surprise when the viewscreen turned on it was Terriphany, she had clearly aged, but it was very much obviously her. I thought only tortoises lived to extreme ages, but what do I know about xenobiology.
"Terriphany, I assume you're the one who turned off that tractor beam for us?" I never expected to be so genuinely glad to see a woman I had been such as ass in front of.
"No time to explain, standby for coupling." There was a clang on our outer hull and her ship coupled to mine on the docking port.
"Captain Davis, Nyany, whoever is flying up there? Those communist humans are only gonna be disabled for so long. Be a dear and start flying us the hell away from here!" She sounded older too, but determined in a way the young woman from the hot tub hadn't.
Nyany grabbed the yoke in the co-pilot's seat and took control, she punched the throttle full forward and we dove away from our attacker. She aimed us toward the Earth, we had dropped out of the RarDrive at the L1 point between the Earth and Moon. My god, the Earth. It was a covered in a thick grey cloud from pole to pole. What happened? It wasn't this bad two hundred years ago.
As I sat there bewildered at the state of my homeworld, the hatch opened and a handful of slightly-more-human-looking-than Terriphany turtle people dropped in. I was at once reminded of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...
"Hi Dad, Nice to meet you." The first one said. He had a thick bundle of cables in his very human looking hand as he leaned over the seat I was in, and popped open the console to quickly plugged it in. "We're good Mom!"
"Standby..." Terriphany talked past Nyany and me to, I guess our son? While she pressed a few commands on her console. "Alright, Nyany, could you aim us where that navicom is suggesting, and then push that big red button for us."
She aimed the ship up from my now grey world, and over the horizon. Nyany looked at me, and I nodded. She hit the button and a Rainbow assaulted us.
"Owww Fuck!" Said the adult turtle-man standing behind me.
"Leonardo, Language!" His mother chided over the intercom. "Now, come help your old mother down into that ship. I want to explain myself to your father."
Nyany and I got out of our seats. When I was on my feet the need to slap myself in the face with both hands. Nope. Awake.
"Are you okay?" Nyany's tail said she was no edge. I could hardly blame her. That was a very wild few seconds, and now we were off again, but with a bunch of turtle-people we'd never met before calling me Dad. I'm on edge too.
"No... who would be okay right now? I'm pretty far from okay." I am honest. "But I think maybe, eventually I'll be okay. It's just... a lot to process. We almost died."
"Well... lets go see what Terriphany has to say." She took my hand and squeezed it, I squeezed back.
And we walked into the back of the ship where Terriphany, my three children with her, and two of my adult grandchildren and one of their spouses were waiting, along with a clutch of eggs that I assume contain my great grand children.
"First things first, we installed a cloak so that no one will be able to find us, at least hopefully. I put all the money I made from Disney paying me to having your children from stored DNA samples into stealth tech research. I took the pinnacle of our designs and destroyed all the research and the entire company a week before we came here to join you. This is your eldest son Leonardo, the second to hatch was Rembrandt, and your only Daughter Sofonisba hatched third. Her children with a human man, Frank, deceased, are Artemisia and Donatello. Artemisia has laid a clutch that she made with her mate, Chelon. Donatello has yet to find a mate, we all hope he can do so in whatever future we find ourselves in."
Everyone waved one at a time and when she was done speaking, I nearly lost my legs. Nyany helped me find a chair. "Get him some water, please."
Sofonisba brought a glass to me. She looks a lot like me, how can a turtle person look so much like me. What the fuck Disney-corp, Captain Tanner, whichever of them was responsible for this... I actually needed to thank. My surprise family had really pulled my ass out of the fire. I splash myself in the face with the glass of water more than I drink it, but I did swallow a little in the process.
"Okay, so that's a lot. I have questions."
Terriphany gestured for me to go ahead. And all the kids found places to sit down themselves too. Nyany stayed standing behind and beside me, her hand on my shoulder.
"So what now? How much did Disney pay you for this? Was there some sort of reality show associated with raising them too? Is Disney even still around? Why are they all named after Earth's renaissance artists?" They came tumbling out faster than they could answer.
"Disney paid Mom plenty." Rembrandt said.
"Turtin' along with Terriphany, yes." Sofonisba said. "It put us all through college. Phd's the lot of us."
"Disney named the first three of us, and we just..." Leonardo sorta trailed off.
"...carried on the tradition afterward, I guess." Sofonisba took responsibility for naming her own children in the same fashion."
Terriphany's tone took a dire note when she answered his only remaining unanswered question. "As for old Disney corp... well, they fully captured the galactic government when they went properly interspecies in their executive level. It's the Disney Way now, not the Milky Way. Humanity on Earth rebelled against Disney rule and after it was deemed the citizens had too much hope to be properly profitable for the company, the planet was bombarded from space. Most of humanity retreated violently from capitalism after the blanketing of earth in that grey fog."
Nyany was smarter than me, she asked a very good question, "So why did they try to take us alive, and not just blast us out of existence while we crawled around the solar system at near light speed?
"Oh, because the RarDrive is a bomb that will wipe out half the solar system in a single massive explosion if it's disengaged early. Old Disney was smart and vicious. This is all in your contract Captain Davis, did you not read any of it?"
"People from my time don't really fully read contracts. Just press accept or sign and assume its fine."
"That explains why the kids are such a surprise to you. I wasn't the only one you know..." She hook her head in disbelief. "The other reason to not explode you, is that you are the richest single person in the galaxy. Captain Tanner invested a small portion of your funds into buying a rather intelligent investment AI to manage your resources, and it smartly paid to upgrade itself. As a result, It the we left your AI and Disney Corp were engaged in galaxy wide commercial and financial warfare, as well as some actual warfare in terms of proxy wards. Half the galaxy thinks of you as a hero, an the other half a villain."
Nyany gave me a little shake and whispered in my ear. "Earlier when I said It was hundreds of years since my Zero-g training, I meant... from my point of view. I'm four hundred and twelve earth years old." I think she realized I hadn't properly read her bio before starting the show, but I had, it said she was twenty seven, which I now realize must have been her planet's years.
"So... now what?" I asked again.
Terriphany smiled in her turtle way, "Well If the rumors are true, then only the living Relic, Captain Davis, In other words, You, my dear baby-daddy, can take command of the AI and give it new instructions. Its current objective is to "maximize profit for Captain Davis" and the main hub will hopefully still be at the star system about two hundred light years away that we're headed to at a turtle's pace. Feel free to take some time to think about what you want to do with that information, but I'll tell you what I think you should do if you want."
"Hit me, Terri."
She smiled, and I could almost see that twenty four year old turtle girl in the hot tub again. God I was such as ass. "I think you should tell it make the star trek future actually happen."
"Yea, I think I will."
A pretty good day later, we smashed through the rainbow above a beautiful blue-green orb.

2024.05.15 23:52 noctemct help

So, we recently discovered that our 15 year old, oil-fired Dunkirk steam boiler is cracked and in need of replacing. I'm acquiring quotes from various contractors in the area but all of this is kind of overwhelming, since they all seem to be interested in selling me something different.
It's a fairly small house, around 1300sq ft, in central CT.
2 BR and most of our 'living' is on the on the 1st floor, and the 2nd floor is basically roughly finished attic space, previous owners were using it as a bedroom and there's a half bath up there as well. We use it as a family room, but it's basically unusable in the summer - the windows are too small for an A/C unit (and I refuse to get a portable AC) and there's just no air movement up there, and in the winter it takes forever to heat up - the pipe feeding that 2nd floor radiator is both undersized (3/4") and copper for some reason. Every single radiator valve (not vent, I replaced those) in the house also needs replacing, some of the knobs have disintegrated and they all leak water when the system is running at full-tilt.
Since the boiler needs to get replaced anyway, I've been looking into alternatives as well, such as mini splits and heat pumps. I definitely like the idea, but electric rates in CT are a little...high. If I had solar with a nice big battery backup, this would be a no brainer, but we haven't gotten solar installed yet and no plans to do so for at least another 5-10 years.
Every contractor that comes in seems to send me in a slightly different direction, and I'm just not sure what's best. 1 gave me an option of ripping it all out, switching to forced hot water & new baseboard heaters in place of the radiators. Another suggested a heat pump feeding a ducted air handler in the basement and cutting registers in the floor for forced hot air. Another suggested dual fuel, keeping a new steam boiler as well as supplementing with mini-splits, though that one does seem cost prohibitive.
So far, the pricing I've gotten has been anywhere from 8-9k for a straight oil burning replacement, up to 15k+ for a gas conversion (we have gas in the house already for our water heater, but the chimney isn't lined so we'd need to do that), $20k for the gas forced hot water, and $23K+ for the heat pump solution since we'd also need to upgrade to a 200a electrical service.
None of it seems terribly unreasonable as far as pricing goes, that's not really my complaint or question, more just that I'm not sure what the best option would be for a house this size in this climate, since there seems to be quite a few options these days. Back to the Googles for more research!

2024.05.15 23:51 kameljoe21 Hot Water Recirculation Pump

Tankless water heater. Add a recirculation pump that is timer based. So far I have installed this and it does not work. There are 2 possible reason it does not work. The pump defective or the pump is not powerful enought to move the water fast enough to trigger the sensor, or could be moving too fast?
Layout is simple and correct as far as I know. Cold incoming with check valve. Tee to pump and to tankless. The tee to the pump has a check valve ( yes they are all in the correct direction as well as the pump) and a bleeder valve then the pump. The loop is as followed: Outgoing hot water to a tee, right goes to a bathroom. Left goes to a kitchen sink and to a utility sink. This then loops back to the hot water connection to the washer. The hose goes to the washer and splits to another hose that comes back to another washer valve and goes down to the pump.
The problem is that once everything is static and you switch the pump on the tankless does not kick on. I can open the bleeder valve and it will kick on and then shut it only for it to not kick on.
There is no brand for the tankless, it was bought off amazon for around 500 dollars (propane base),
I have no clue as I have installed similar set ups on water heater just fine.
FYI- I do not need your reply regarding codes, rules, regulation or your safety concerns unless it directly affect the reason why this does not work.

2024.05.15 23:43 UglyButUseful How much power do yall use?

First time in our own place in Phoenix and the summer APS bills are coming in. We have a two bed two bath about 1000 sqft on the 3rd floor, using about 26 to 36 kWh a day (a little over $6 a day). I keep the place at 82F but we don't have any gas so stove and water heater are electric. Our last month total was 919.00 kWh at $198.50. I was wondering how much power everyone uses? and what tricks people have for taking the bill down if any

2024.05.15 23:37 briang123 User who Message Requested me about my mango leaf problem posts from a couple years ago.

Update post to: https://www.reddit.com/plantclinic/comments/gtj4iy/6_month_old_mango_tree_young_old_leaves_curling/
I accidentally rejected your request when I meant to accept it SMH, sorry try to message me again. Simply put after so many years of experiencing very similar problems with growing mangoes in cooler climates or typical room temperature climates (67-74F / humidity 40-50%), I figured out what was the cause of these symptoms.
It's temperature and humidity!!!!!! You NEED to get the temperature to be above 75F consistently and you need to get the humidity to always be 50%+. I added to my grow tent a heater with a digital thermometer temperature controller to keep the lowest heat at 75F~ and heat the grow tent to 85F~ during it's "daytime". I closed off exterior ventilation from the grow tent and i moved my fan to circulate the air to be just inside the grow tent. I keep a gallon jug with the top cut off inside the tent with water and with the maintained temperature control, naturally the humidity will be stable around 60-75%. I had a dying fruit punch mango tree with orange/brown spots, brown tips, leaves falling off and slowly dying over the course since I bought it. When I changed those 2 factors to maintain the heat at 75-85F and humidity to 60-75%, it stopped its "slow death" of continued symptoms progression and a few months later it put out a new bud on top and exploded with 10 new giant, mature leaves that do not have any issues ever since. I haven't experienced those past problems ever since I've changed my temp and humidity.
Previous temp and humidity with "slow death" temp: 67-74F humidity: 39%-51%
Regular healthy growth with no symptoms: temp: 75-85F humidity: 60-75%
For those of you trying or have tried the "cool weather climate project for mangoes/avocados", don't. You're wasting your time and they will never flourish or grow properly. They will experience stunted growth until they slowly start developing mysterious symptoms that will run you around diagnosing your plants from root rot to pests or nutrient deficiencies but the problem at the end of the day was simply too low of a temperature range it consistently sits at and too dry of a climate (below 50% humidity). You have to create an artificial environment that is hot and humid if it isn't naturally otherwise you're in for a lot of disappointment. Buy a heater, temperature controller, and grow tent and it will flourish!

2024.05.15 23:30 Miss_Cream_Puff_ Oil-looking film on water surface?

Oil-looking film on water surface?
Teen betta owner here! I came back from school today and found this weird type of film that formed on the surface of the tank. I tried touching it with my nail and it looked like a little rip appeared. What is it and what should I do about it? Thank you for any help!!
I’ve had my betta for about ten months, he has a five gallon tank, a filter, and a heater. I do full tank cleans - 20% water change + gravel, decor, filter and heater clean - once a month, change the filter once a month, and do once-every-two-weeks 20% water change since he had and recovered(!!) from fin rot.

2024.05.15 23:21 requisition31 Alternative Heating options for a house I intend to purchase.

I am thinking of purchasing a small house that is part of a complex formed of several old Victorian houses which are mostly connected by party walls. The house has no back garden and a very small front garden.
It is electric heating only although I am told it does have a “normal” hot water system with radiators and such, and instead of a boiler it has a electric element. The current owner has told me that it is a 7kW system and it has to be left on during the winter for most of the day to achieve a habitable temperature which is expensive as you can imagine.
I’m considering all alternative methods of heating the place as this is going to be the largest running expense. I have considered an air source heat pump but I am put off by the cost and I will have nowhere I can install it. I would need planning permission I think because the building is listed.
One of my neighbours has a huge oil tank on their property and has oil heating. I discussed the issue with them casually and they have suggested that for only slightly above the price of which they pay for oil; they would be willing to supply me with oil on metered basis if I decided to try to install an oil boiler. I imagine this may be run in the same way that a shared septic tank works (this property also has one of those with that same neighbour).
Am I completely stupid to consider this? The only other option I’ve come up with is ripping out all the radiators and just get electric heaters installed, use an economy seven tariff, and be selective about what rooms are heated.
I am interested to hear your thoughts. Thank you in advance!
Some other information
Property is listed so I cannot change the single pane windows. Same for external insulation, but internal insulation may be a possibility.
It is affectively a two up to down property.
I have my suspicions that it is a solid brick construction with no cavity.

2024.05.15 22:57 Ne_vini_mbung [help] waterbox aquarium cust serv question.

So I’m looking to get into the hobby. My only experience is when I worked overseas years ago in Asia pacific and things were done much differently back then especially in Bali.
I’ve been doing a lot of research on aquariums and I’ve narrowed it down to innovative marine or waterbox. I noticed today a sign for water box literally a mile from my house in Florida. I stopped in to talk with them and maybe see some aquarium’s firsthand. As I walked into the office, I was greeted and then I was told that they were a distributor and to go look online. They then turned around and walked away. Is this normal water box customer service? I would think they would at least point me to a showroom or ask me some questions and engage with me as a potential customer…. The whole experience has turned me off from Waterbox but I thought I should ask here since it was a distribution center, and maybe this is normal for this industry. Clearly I have a lot to learn. Any thoughts would be helpful.

2024.05.15 22:52 Chester2111 Haven't drained my hot water heater since it was installed 6 years ago, is it safe to attempt to drain it?

Our hot water in the shower is starting to smell sulfur-y, so I was planning to check the anode and drain the hot water heater. A friend of mine told me that if its been 5+ years that touching it may be worse than leaving it alone. Details about our situation:
Previous home owner installed it 6 years ago. Natural gas, 50 gallon Whirlpool. First six months of its life, it was run with no softener (very hard water). After we purchased the house, first project I did was adding a softener. Great water ever since, but I bet there was at least a bit of build-up from its early life. It has a plastic drain valve, which makes me nervous. I've been replacing every valve in the house with 90 degree ball valves after one of those old twist style valves on one of our toilets failed half-open, so I would probably want to do the same here, assuming I go ahead and drain it.
Am I setting myself up for suffering if I go ahead and attempt to drain it? Is it true that if you waited too long to drain it, its better off being left alone?

2024.05.15 22:51 Willing_Ad8953 Ok somebody ‘splain this to me.

I ordered neocardina shrimp from two different vendors. When the arrived today, I checked the gH in both shipments. All the shrimp arrived alive, no DOAs. In one batch, the GH was 21, KH 9. The other, it’s zero, as in RODI water. KH too. I keep my tanks at 8. So now I’m doing a 3 hour drip acclimation. Anyone have feedback? Suggestions? I’ve reached out to the vendors. I’m fairly new to this shrimp thing, but I’m an advanced fresh and saltwater aquarist. I’ve had reef tanks for 30 years. Have a BS in Marine Biology from FAU. Just took down my reef tanks. Too much work at my age. I’m confused on this though.
