2024.05.15 15:48 karenvideoeditor The Zoo - [Part 2]

Previous

So, if you’re just joining us, I work at a haunted zoo now. Since I’ve gotten some rest, it feels like I’ve got my head on straight, at least, so I’d like to continue where I left off.
I sat on the floor in the office after meeting the ghost until I’d settled my rattled mind (and realized I’d forgotten to ask her name, how rude is that?). I took a deep breath and got up off the floor. Walking over and falling into the rolling chair in front of the large screen of camera views, when I brought up the camera that covered the area in which I’d spotted her, she was still there, and it seemed she hadn’t moved an inch.
Sitting there, at a loss, I continued to watch her. The ghost hung around for another five minutes or so, appearing to look at a few things off-screen, though I’m not sure what. Then she walked off into the forest and left the view of the cameras. I wasn’t sure if she vanished into the ether or if she’d gone looking into the trees to look for something.
But that wasn’t the end of the job interview, so let me jump back there. It continued into what kind of animals the zoo had, with Andrew asking me how much experience I had with dangerous animals.
I took a moment to consider the question. “So, ah
I’ve been going hunting and fishing with a neighbor since I was sixteen,” I told him. “We always have to keep an eye out for gators, bears, and hogs. Then there’s snakes, of course
snapping turtles
Since I’ve lived here my whole life and been aiming for a job with wildlife for a long time, I know a lot about the animals in Arkansas in general. But good advice for all of the above is avoid them, so I’ve had encounters, but I don’t know if you’d say I have experience with them.”
“That’s fine,” Andrew said, nodding. “That’s an answer I’m satisfied with. Now, the ghost was the appetizer, Ripley; here’s the main course. To start with, the pay isn’t twenty-five an hour. It’s fifty.”
Staring in shock for a moment, I asked, “Are you serious?”
“Yeah. But that’d be weird to post online considering what applicants think we need, so I halved it.”
“That’s
 Okay, why?”
“The animals are already here. You just can’t see them.”
I stared at him for a long moment, some disbelief worming its way into my expression, before saying, “Sorry, what?”
“There’s a chance you’d naturally never see them, or at least some of them,” he continued casually. “It depends on both your genetics and how long you stay on the job. I can naturally see six of them, but that’s it. Suzanne can see all of them, and more. Some are what people would label demons or ghosts. Or magic. Mostly you’d call them cryptids. The ghost was just a warm-up; I mentioned her first because it never takes more than a week to see her if you work the night shift. If you manage to handle her okay, soon you’ll be able to see the animals too. The more time you spend on the grounds, for weird reasons,” he said, wiggling his fingers in the direction of the back door, “the more you’ll be able to see.”
“So, this
this is a zoo for cryptids,” I echoed slowly. He nodded once, waiting to find out what kind of reaction I would have. I gestured vaguely around the room. “If this is a hidden camera show, will you cut me a check for showing up and participating?”
Andrew coughed out a chuckle and shook his head. “No joke. There are a ton of stories out there that have been written to death, pulverized until they’re not the Grimm stories of old and instead they’re Disney films. A lot of those stories come from what some humans have seen. There are dozens of other worlds pressed up against ours, and occasionally things come through by accident. If they’re smart, they’ll lay low and then make their way back when they can. If not, they become local folklore until someone helps them back. I’m just from London, but Suzanne is from somewhere else. She hires people like us for this zoo. Humans.”
Sighing, I shook my head. “That makes no sense. Why would she hire a muggle for a magic zoo?”
Andrew burst out laughing at that, and then waited to gather himself before he continued. “Fair point, but this is less about magic and more about animals, and you’re missing some information that will explain it. First of all, if I misjudge an employee, and they think they can make bank by outing the endangered and valuable animals we have, it’s easy to relocate the zoo.”
“Because magic?” I asked.
“Exactly,” he replied, ignoring the thread of skepticism in my tone. “That means it isn’t the end of the world if that happened, though it is a pain in the arse. But second
let me ask you a question. Speaking of reality shows, say the Discovery Channel put out a call to replace Steve Irwin when he passed. Imagine they had a line out the door,” he said with a gesture, “of people who thought they had the skill and natural talent to replace him, to take on everything he’d been doing his whole life. How many do you reckon would lose an arm, a leg, or their life, by the end of the day?”
My lips parted in surprise and I narrowed my eyes at him. “You’re saying people from
wherever
they’re just as dumb as humans, but they’re worse, because they actually think they can handle these things.”
Andrew pointed the pen at me. “Things. Exactly. You called them things. Suzanne and her friends grew up with them and would call them animals. These animals have dispositions and temperaments that we’ve studied for as long as there have been scientists. Where Suzanne’s from, they know the weaknesses of these animals, and also they’re in enclosures here, even if you and I can’t see the walls because they’re invisible things called ‘wards’. If I hire someone who’s got magic on top of all that, they’ll have almost no instinctive fear.
“Everything here is nocturnal, and every one of them is a hunter. Some of these things? Humans see them and they pass out. Not that I want you passing out, but I need someone who is scared of these things, who knows to stay out of the enclosures no matter what. Not someone who thinks they can train them to do tricks, who gets close enough for them to grab a mouthful of hair and drown them. Once, we had a night shift manager injured, and once killed, because they didn’t take these animals seriously enough.”
Thinking back to the Sea World orca incident I knew he’d been referencing, I remembered wondering how someone at that level of her profession could be so careless as I watched the video on YouTube. It made sense when he explained it like that. I hesitated before mentally throwing my hands up and going all in. “So, why put this place here, then? If they’re endangered and also dangerous, why have a zoo at all instead of just a small reserve?”
He pursed his lips, looking disappointed in me. “Ripley. You know that already. You already said as much.”
Thinking back through our conversation, I said, “The rich humans who pay top dollar to see supernatural animals.”
“Not humans,” he told me. “But people, yes, and they are rich, and they’re making donations and spending their money on a ticket here because everything we have is endangered.”
“So
”
I just let my voice trail off and my mind started to drift. Andrew remained silent, letting me do so. There’s that thing people say, ‘I believe that you believe it,’ which is just a kinder way of saying, ‘Bullshit.’ Parents say it about closet monsters. Psychologists say it to people who say they’ve been abducted and probed by aliens. I wanted to say it to Andrew.
But I also wanted a job. If it meant working overnight at an empty zoo, that was fine. When it came down to it, especially when I took the tone of our conversation into account, this was a zoo specifically focused on preserving endangered ‘animals’, and it was allegedly doing important work. Also, if this turned out to be the real deal and I started seeing the animals, I would deal with it, just like I would deal with an enclosure that had a lion or tiger or gorilla. If it came with a ghost and invisible creatures, I really didn’t see what the difference was, if I couldn’t go in the enclosures either way.
On that note, I’d like you to imagine a kid who looks at a roller coaster, watching everyone screaming and grinning as they go up and down and all around and they’re like, ‘Heck, I could do that! That looks like a blast!’
Then they get on, the first drop hits, and they realize they’ve made a terrible mistake.
“All right,” I sighed. “I can’t say I’m going to turn down a job just because it’s going to be scary. Especially not one with this paycheck.”
Andrew smiled. “Awesome. There’s an adjustment process for anyone working here, similar to a dog that gets adopted, actually. I know the general guidelines of, ‘three days, three weeks, three months’ in terms of milestones, until they finally feel they’re where they’re supposed to be,” he told me, “and you can think of your time here along those lines. I really think you’re a great fit, and once you reach the milestone of working here for three months, I’ll officially consider you our new night shift guard. And I hope you’ll stay with us for many years.”
I nodded and smiled at the flattery of an employer wanting me to work a great job for them for a long time. I’d never had a dog, but those milestones were well-known among anyone who knew animals, especially dogs. The first three days, the dog is getting to know its new digs, exploring, and decompressing. At three weeks, they’ve gotten used to their environment and are starting to get comfortable with their surroundings and the routines of the humans they live with. By three months, they know the rules and follow them, they trust you, and they feel they are where they’re meant to be. I could only hope to be so lucky.
I saw the ghost two days ago and she has yet to make another appearance (for those who are curious, I asked, and her name is Leila), and I still hadn’t seen any animals. I did hear one, though, I feel compelled to note. A growling roar sounded from the lake on occasion, echoing across the vast zoo, sending a shiver down my spine. Whatever that animal was, it sounded gigantic.
Andrew said there was apparently a group that wanted to visit for a birthday and they were offering a huge donation, so he let me know they were making an exception and that this group would be walking through the park that night. That meant I’d be watching people watching animals that, as far as I could tell, weren’t there.
It was anticlimactic. Even the three people who came for the tour just looked like people, not like aliens or something eldritch from another dimension, and I stayed in the security office the whole time. Andrew was the one giving the tour. I watched them spend about five minutes at each enclosure, the hour or so that they were there passing without incident. It was clear that they were able to see all the animals, though, since they motioned excitedly at each enclosure and spoke to Andrew, who presumably answered any questions they had.
If they could see the animals, that was that. There was still that niggle in the back of my head, from my twenty-three years of life never encountering anything like ghosts or cryptids, telling me that this was ridiculous. Waiting for someone to knock on the door, a camera mounted on their shoulder, to tell me that it was a big joke and they wanted to see how long I’d play along. But from all I saw, this was a real place with real, invisible animals.
I do carry a taser and pepper spray in my capacity as a security guard. Though it isn’t for the animals, since they’re in the enclosures; they’re actually for the rare instance of a break-in. Andrew mentioned that it had happened several times it the past, someone trying to steal an animal in the hopes of selling it on the black market. They’d been successful before, but apparently my predecessor Roger was good at his job, and mostly they left in handcuffs.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of confrontation, but my job was to call Andrew and then confront the person, not kick their ass. That’s what the police were for, or rather, the people Andrew would call in lieu of police in certain situations.
Fifty bucks an hour. That’s the key here.
Andrew hadn’t set up direct deposit, since he was sticking with a strategy of waiting to see if I’d continue to work there once I found out myself dealing with the animals (I’ve decided I am going to just call them animals). Instead, I got an old-fashioned check after my shift every Friday. The number on the first check was delightful. I went out that evening and had a big dinner at the local diner, order my most expensive favorites on the menu and a big slice of pie for dessert.
When it came to the paychecks in general, though, I had this weird feeling of not wanting to tell my dad and brother about the fact that it was actually $50/hr. I previously mentioned that my dad, his name’s Nathan if you’re curious, works at a local grocery store. Our town has a couple food franchises, but I think its size is just short of whatever threshold Walmart uses to decide where to open. He earns $14/hr. and that’s after the tiny raises he’s gotten over the past thirteen years.
That’s not to say he’d feel bad about not making as much as me. On the contrary, he would be ecstatic for me and really proud. But, like me, he’d be suspicious. That hourly rate was the biggest hint that this was more than just a private zoo for cryptids. And as soon as that fat check cleared without problems, my dad wouldn’t be satisfied with reassurances; he’d want to come visit the zoo and look around.
I’d told him it’s a private preservation with scheduled (expensive) visits only and that it had only eleven animals, so he’d been appeased by me brushing off the idea of a visit. Also, I took a few photos of my workplace; one of the security room, one of me sitting in my chair, one photo of the many screens I watched, and a selfie where I was feigning sleep out of boredom, slouched in my chair with my mouth open in a faux snore. That let him feel like he knew where I was and what I was doing, and that I was safe.
But if I told him I was making double what he thought, my father would practically order me to quit. No job was worth my safety, he’d tell me. I was quite of the opposite opinion, however, considering how crucial any and all conservation efforts were these days. Especially with the steep extinction levels due to humans competing with other animals for space, not to mention climate change. Working in any job that helped preserve species and keep ecosystems in balance, or put them back in balance, was so important.
Then again, my father would also point out something I had realized right away: the fact was that I was working with endangered species that were not from Earth. I wasn’t helping my planet. To be honest, though
that didn’t matter to me. Especially after that talk with Andrew about why he hired a human for this job, I figured whichever dimension these animals came from had the equivalent of us, razing forests to the ground, clouding the planet with pollution, and leaving the animals with no avenue of recourse when yet more land was taken from them.
I really do hope to keep working here for a long time, though, and not just because of the money. I can’t help it; I want to know what these things were, and I want to work with them, to do the job of a zookeeper. The same way you go up to the chain-link fence to get close to a carnivore on the other side who thinks you’d make a nice afternoon snack. You just want to be closer to them, to experience that incredible, daunting feeling of being in their presence.
Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t long before I got what I wanted.
The day after we had the tour go through, I was doing my sweep when I saw the ghost again. She was sitting on a small boulder in the same area I’d seen her the first time, looking identical, blood covering the front of her slashed shirt, the wounds visible underneath. I stopped and stood there for a moment before I decided to raise my hand in a small wave.
The young woman cocked her head at me and raised a hand in the air in an imitation of my gesture, her expression showing a bit of curiosity.
She was low-key, seemingly not concerned with my presence, looking at me as a novel phenomenon in her world. I wondered what that world consisted of. Was she always here, sometimes visible and sometimes not? Or did she have another world next to ours, in the ether, where she left everything in this world behind and floated in her disembodied form? Did she still feel emotions? Was that really curiosity on her face, or was I projecting? Did she feel happiness? Fear? Did she have the option of moving on, or was she stuck here?
Many questions that I might never get the answers to. And that was assuming Andrew knew the answers, since I’d never met Suzanne Cooper and he hadn’t even mentioned that possibility. This place was clearly her baby, but I’m sure running it was a lot of work. Plus, if she was rich enough to own it, she was rich enough to have other businesses and charities to run.
When it comes to the enclosures, they’re all wrapped by a barrier of some kind, though never one that seems adequate. There was not a single place with the ugly metal weavings of a chain-link fence, and no stretches of circular razor wire. Instead, there are nice fences. Black iron, or wrought steel fencing in a similar style to the one circling the perimeter of the zoo, just shorter and with different patterns. Or a spaced picket fence, the wood stained in some tone of brown, or a split two-rail fence. As if to say, ‘This is the border of your enclosure, but we’re just letting you know out of courtesy.’
When I started to pass enclosure number seven last night, a young woman’s voice spoke, “Hello.”
I startled, unaware that I hadn’t been alone. “Oh. Hi,” I said, staring at her standing a few yards in.
She had been next to a large tree and I hadn’t seen her. This enclosure was behind a picket fence, and she walked through the large area of wild grasses and flowers that stretched across the other side of the fence. There were fewer tall grasses closer to the fence, which I guessed was because it had been tromped down by her regular pacing along it when there were visitors, or if she wanted to see the various enclosures of the zoo. Her sudden appearance was a bit weird, considering I had been expecting to see a cryptid and instead I was looking at, it seemed, an attractive Asian woman.
She wore a black kimono, the soft silk robe draped gently over her body, with beautiful patterns of cherry blossoms, more so over her left side, and red and blue birds with their wings spread. A sash wrapped around her abdomen, she wore socks and sandals on her feet, and her hair was up in those rolls that gave volume to the style.
I was no expert on any fashion, much less that of another country, so I just assumed it was all traditional Japanese clothing. Most likely, the visitors who came liked to see a certain time-honored style and that’s what she stuck with. Or maybe she played on stereotypes. That would be amusing.
“I’m Yui. It’s nice to meet you,” she spoke, arriving at the border of the fence and holding out a hand for me to shake.
I’d been standing about three yards away from her, and I’ll be honest, muscle memory tried to kick in. But I only made it two steps, my hand starting to rise, before I froze, the hand falling limply at my side. “Nice to meet you, too,” I answered, my voice quiet.
Damn. I wonder how many times that honey trap works back where she comes from.
The pleasant look on her face faded, and she lowered her hand. “You won’t shake hands with me? Isn’t that rude?”
“I mean, I kind of like my hand where it is. You know, attached to me.”
Her demure smile widened into something more amused. “I would never do something so revolting.”
Looking her up and down, as if more visual information would give me more knowledge of what she was, I asked her, “What would you do?”
“I would be less wasteful,” she said softly.
A finger of ice trailed down my spine, and I had the sudden image in my head of her grabbing my outstretched hand in an iron grip and yanking me over the fence, leaving me to sprawl on the ground. Then killing and consuming me efficiently, without a single careless step, the same way humans slaughtered pigs, using everything from the hog but the squeal. I was struck with a shiver at the idea of her consuming everything from me but my screams.
Slowly, I took one step further down the path, then another. Just as I got to a walking pace, though, I realized the woman had started walking too, in the same direction. I’d have eventually gotten to the end of her enclosure and keep going, leaving her behind, but she spoke up. “Are you leaving?”
I came to a stop, meeting her gaze again. “My job is to walk the zoo every hour. Then I’ll get back to the security room and stay there until my next walk.”
“Have you met the others yet?”
I hesitated before saying, “Just Leila.”
She blinked languidly. “That means nobody welcomed you here.”
“Andrew did.”
She didn’t reply to that. Instead, she slowly started to lean forward, and I flinched backward a few steps further as I saw insect legs start curling out from her back.
No. Not insect. Arachnid.
The eight legs ended in small ‘paws’ with tiny claws, a layer of hairs covering the leg from top to bottom, like any typical tarantula. I took two more slow steps back and my mouth went dry as the jointed legs just kept lengthening, until they were large enough to lever her off the ground.
My gaze had been on the spider legs, but my heart skipped a beat as I realized her human legs had melded together and turned into a bulging abdomen. Her skin was shifting to a carapace, eventually all the way up to her shoulders and down her arms, her fingers elongating and her nails stretching to claws. From there down, her body was that of a pale tarantula with pedipalps the size of my arms and piercing fangs in her jaws that looked like they could take my head off.
There was a moment, my vision blurring, where I was worried that I might piss myself. The part of my brain that still had its humor intact in that moment told me that I should keep an emergency set of clothes in my car, or at the very least, start wearing Depends to work.
“I show you my true form,” she said softly, her voice now raspy like an eighty-year-old after a lifelong smoking habit. “Welcome to Suzanne Cooper’s zoo. The night shift guard for many years was Roger, before he retired and the zoo moved, and I miss him dearly. What should I call you?”
I choked on my words. There was no way my throat was going to cooperate enough for me to clearly get a sentence out. Instead, I realized my legs had taken control of the situation themselves, unsatisfied with my conscious brain’s decision to stand and stare, taking steps backward. I backed up a yard, then five yards, then ten.
My mind focused on the fact that spiders don’t waste anything, and pictured my demise. I’d be wrapped in a cocoon, killed, and made nice and mushy before she had me for dinner.
The whole time, my brain was a frenzied mess, my pupils were probably the size of dimes, and I was staring at that tiny, pathetic fence between her and me. There was so much adrenaline pumping through my body that I felt like my bones were vibrating. The fence was, to my eyes, the only thing between us. The only thing keeping her from tackling and killing me. My only hope was that she’d do it quickly.
But she didn’t move. As I absorbed her innocent, polite words, the look on her face was calm, and I wondered if this was typically the way a conversation went before she devoured her prey. I wondered how many people she’d eaten. Not humans, not people from Earth, but the ones from where she came from. The fact that she doesn’t scare the shit out of those people means they’re staggeringly dumber than humans.
Finally, I rounded a corner, both relieved at having her out of my sight and worried that she would take that moment to come find me. When she’d been within eyeshot, I had at least known where she was and could run in the other direction. But I didn’t hear the sound of faint footsteps moving rapidly toward me. All was quiet, in that deep, smothering way that only an empty business in the middle of the night in small town America could be.
My hands trembling, I barely paid attention to anything but the confirmation that my surroundings were free of the colossal spider as I finally got back to the door. Grabbing the handle and letting my eyes dart around for about ten seconds and my ears prick for the slightest sound, I finally swiped my key card across the pad and went inside, shutting the door behind me and engaging the backup deadbolt.
Maybe that was why they had decided on keycards. If I was running from something and panicking, using an actual key or inserting the card like at a hotel would keep me from getting to safety considering my hands were shaking enough to mix a margarita.
Walking over to my chair, I fell into it, letting my body flush itself of terror as I looked up at the cameras. There she was, still in arachnid form, exactly where I’d left her behind that rinky-dink fence, casually looking around and slowly pacing back and forth. I stared at her as my racing heart gradually slowed, and a minute or so later she turned on her eight legs and walked back into the trees.
Whatever invisible fences the enclosures have apparently work, which is nice, because I wasn’t keen on getting killed by one of the creatures here. And that’s what brings me here, spilling out everything that’s happened so far. Because nearly passing out from terror isn’t something I wanted to deal with at work, obviously, but I keep going over what she did in my head again and again, and I feel like I reacted like a child who spotted a wolf spider on their bed. I started to worry for my overactive sense of self-preservation, at least in my capacity as an employee here.
The spider didn’t even try to hurt me, and so I was feeling a bit foolish. Even annoyed, actually, at the fact that I’d freaked out so hard and took off instead of trying to engage in at least basic conversation. I got the sense that she wasn’t at human-level intelligence, but I was never going to be able to hold any level of conversation with an alligator.
Sure, she did mention that she wouldn’t be so crass as to yank off my hand because she’d rather just have my entire corpse, but wouldn’t a wolf do the same if it was hungry? Wouldn’t any carnivore? Actually, they probably would’ve been satisfied with one of my hands. The fear here was from the fact that she turned into a giant spider. If she’d turned into Clifford, I would’ve reacted the same way, if not better than, meeting Leila.
With that, I decided I’m staying on the job. Considering how frustrated I can get with foolish people, it’s a bit hypocritical, and I’m being a bit of an idiot. But
there are definitely wards keeping them in their enclosures. Also, I signed up for creatures for another dimension, whether or not I believed in them at the time, and I will not let encountering my first one in an objectively boring way be the reason I quit.
The money is a factor, I’ll grant you. Of course it is. And I can’t spend it if I’m dead, but all signs point to surviving as long as I don’t do anything dumb. Also, yes, I’ll admit there’s a not-so-little voice in the back of my head that’s desperate to know what else is here. I never thought I’d do something like this, but finding out these things are real, I honestly do want to learn more about them.
Still, though, I decided to call Andrew at the end of my shift to ask if the pepper spray and taser I carried worked on a certain spider, as well as the other animals I’d yet to meet.

2024.05.15 14:13 kesennnn Mom Passed Last Week

Things are going well for such a long time. It’s not that it was unexpected, just things were going well for such a long time. It’s not that it was unexpected because I think we’re anticipating the grief for long time- but it doesn’t make it suck any less. My Mom was diagnosed almost two years ago. Did the most rounds of chemo of anyone in our cancer Center, and did so with such grace, such strength. Was a nurse through and through for 35 years and I was absolutely floored at her support system. Her same graduating class were honor guards for the funeral wearing the traditional nursing outfits, and her last hospital stay was on a newly renovated unit at the same floor she worked at her entire career. People she trained in and co-workers bid her farewell when she left the hospital.
She always celebrated life. Every time I came back from Asia there would always be a huge welcome home banner, balloons and family. I wanted to do the same thing for her coming home, so I did.
Because of the experience we had booked in our small town of Newfoundland and constantly getting second opinions in Toronto and Johns Hopkins in Maryland - a lot of things will become the new standard at our hospital in Newfoundland. The major one of those being genetic and somatic testing- which up until my Mom was not something that was the standard at EH. Enzymes, which we started her on immediately will also be pushed from the get go, as well as discussions of nerve blocks to potentially alleviate pain and reduce the amount of opioids needed towards the end.
As far as the death, I don’t think we could’ve asked for anything more peaceful for long time I couldn’t reconcile anticipating my mom’s death because I saw it to myself that normally people would get old and died at home in bed peacefully- there was one final hospital stay after the onset of a ascites- and her dying wish was to come home to die at our house. we called the ambulance one last time the palliative care ambulance team, which has been wonderful, because she suddenly started slipping in and out of consciousness and they let us know that it could be end of life event. At this time, my sister snapped her fingers like she usually did for my mom to come through and she woke up and smiled, went unconscious again. The paramedics asked her if she was in any pain and she said no, not in any pain that was rattling injection, which basically dries out the mucous membranes and put into that rattling.
We basically still thought up until that time that maybe it was just the Dilaudid made her sleepy. We all god in bed- my sister was sleeping on the end of the bed, our Shiba Inu was lying on her lap. My dad was cuddling her and I was sitting on the chair right next to her bedside. She just fell asleep eventually. My dad and my sister also fell asleep not even for admit it and I heard her take the last couple breaths. I woke them up and told her she’s gone.
I think for a little while after I was angry just because a lot of the options that I mentioned in the initial post, we’re not things that our oncologist notified us of proactively. It was more me and my sister, having an Asian studies background and my sister with an accounting one brought these to the table after , every single day reading research articles. Many praised the oncology team in our province. I have a harder time reconciling the fact that me and my sister with non-medical backgrounds were the ones to bring some of these options to the table to me that didn’t make a fantastic oncologist. nn praised the oncology team in our province. I have a harder time rectifying the fact that people with non-medical backgrounds were the ones to bring some of these options to the table to me that didn’t make a fantastic oncologist.
We also found out later the Canadian lab made an error in the Tumor Mutational Burden (TMB), showing it as a 1, while foundation one found the same biopsy sample to have a TMB of 24, making her a optimal candidate for Keytruda. This was a let down days before she passed because she was too sick to go on immunotherapy, and at that point was being constantly drained, and the bowels were obstructed, with constant vomiting. We did our best to keep her comfortable, and she enjoyed just having smoothies and nothing she liked better than watermelon. Please make sure when doing testing to test through a stable company that has a longstanding reputation. They’ve since gone bankrupt and there are no avenues for exploring what went wrong.
We ended up raising almost 6000.00 at this point for Craig’s Cause which has been an invaluable source of emotional support and patient advocacy. She wanted that in lieu of flowers or donations at the funeral.
To everyone battling this disease, keep lighting the path. We will eventually turn the tide on these statistics; but only if each of you advocate for yourselves and demand the best.
Stay strong.

New sub-faction ideas for Kane Wrath #7 Japan-Korea Defense Initiative (GDI)
"Greeting Brothers and Sisters, today we bring you grave news. The sun we though had set long ago had risen again. Those remained from wars of fifty years ago revived from their tombs, readied to served their GDI masters once more. Our brother in China once underestimated them, now they are trampled under their feet. I fear we will faced them soon."
Brother Duc, a Confessor in Ho Chi Minh city.
Konnichiwa, Annyeong hasimnikka and hello guys and girls. I'm back with the third trilogy of homebrew sub-factions. This time, we'll take a look to the far east, where the Empire of Rising Sun used to be, at least in Red Alert 3 timeline. In the lands of Korean Peninsula and Japan Island, a branch of GDI, the Japan-Korea Defense Initiative (J-KDI) is in charge. This concept based on the Empire of Rising Sun from RA3 with many touches to fit in the scenario of the Tiberium Universe. As this region unique geography, society, economical and technological advances, the sub-faction leaned more toward urban warfare, drone combat and the fragile but versatile mech walker.
As you already know, the Steel Talon also favor walkers but their mech are crude, rugged and focus on late-game punch, J-KDI mechs are more futuristic, high-tech, highly versatile, which is an odd for GDI doctrine, but when taking their operating region into account, the feat seem not very complicated, as Japan and Korea are the least suffered from the first two Tiberium Wars and designated as Blue Zones (Yes, even North Korea is a Blue Zone, maybe Kane get scared, who know?). So, without any further ado, let dive in.
Disclaimer: As always, The image I used in the Post below is from various source on the internet such as CnC wiki and Deviantart to give reader a better look at my idea. If you you felt uncomfortable with this, please let me know in the comment below and I'll remove them

J-KDI insignia
Lore
Originally created by the United Nations as a branch of GDI in charge of Japan and Korean region and after decades maintaining security and prosperity with advancing in technologies, J-KDI is one of the most renowned division within GDI. They often active in Japan Main Islands and Korean Peninsula, which saw little Tiberium infestation and stable politic and economic environments. During the chaotic time before the Second Tiberium War, the three governments met with GDI presentative and strike a deal: The three countries will accept GDI officials, tactics, policies and complied to mobilization orders in exchange for maintaining their own decree of independent, including the right to command and develop their own army with access to some GDI technologies. This deal has led to the birth a semi-independent regional forces within GDI, known as Japan-Korea Defense Initiative (J-KDI).
One of J-KDI unique characteristic is due to they mostly operate in large city, thus their arsenal is modified to suit urban combats. With their freedom in R&D and a huge sum of budget to do so, their units seem more futuristic and sometime unrealistic compare to normal GDI war machines. Most noticeable is they managed to recovered old prototypes from older projects, upgraded and let them enter services once again. With North Korea also in the mix, J-KDI also employed well trained armed military polices and tactical nuclear ballistic weapons. On the other side, J-KDI saw limited use of aircraft and cannot access to Ion Cannons due to GDI constrictions, however, they soon found out other "solutions" to fulfill their role.
In recent years, J-KDI had found a new talent, Dr. Liang, brother of Jade Liang, a NOD notorious commander. Dr. Liang worked side by side with his sister Jade in the GDI research labs until they were both accidentally exposed to raw Tiberium. Liang chose to amputate his arm rather than succumb to mutation. He now dedicates himself to finding ways to heal wounds of all kinds with most of his research into pilotless vehicles. And Dr. Liang, who in need of a sponsor met with J-KDI, who scouting for talents in robotics and drone vehicles, thus Dr. Liang was recruited as chief scientist and a battle commander for J-KDI. His contributed in drones and AI developments helped J-KDI advanced further to their vision of a futuristic army, until the end of Third Tiberium War, that is ...
Building
  • Can not build Airfield.
  • Can not build Combat Support Airfield.
  • Call for Transport available after a Command Post is built
Defense
  • Missile Silo replaces Ion Cannon: Sponsored by United Republic of Korea, these things make NOD green with envy. It can launch a tactical nuclear strike delivered by an ICBM with 5 tactical nuclear MIRV warheads at the target location anywhere on the map. If this is not enough, J-KDI commanders can purchase additional warheads at the Silo. Each warheads cost 1500$ and each ICBM can carry 10 warheads at most.
The Missile Silo ready to deliver it payloads
Infantry
  • Riot Squad replaces Riflemen Squad: Basic infantry/policeman armed with mini assault rifles, riot shield and flash bang. They are studier but slower than their counterpart and trained to clear garrisoned building. On the flip side, they can throw flash bang at enemies infantry, which stunned for a while.
  • Dragonfly Drone: Flying scout drones armed with EMP Immobilizer, which can disable ground vehicle. It can ordered to charge and self-destruct in an EMP explosion, hopefully damaging anything around it. Require Command Post.
  • Service Drone: Flying support drone with timed life that can repair or heal adjacent allies units. Can only summoned through Instant Service support power.
The Riot Squad (from Crossfire Legion), the Dragonfly Drone and the Service Drone
Vehicle
  • Cannot build Rig and Mammoth Tank.
  • Assault APC: Troop transport vehicle armed with weapon jammer and fire ports. Weapon Jammer can render enemies weapons to useless, even infantry weapons. Can upgraded to deploy smoke screen to support friendly units.
  • Robo Tengu replaces Guardian APC: Anti-infantry hover walker, first designed for security, then converted for military use. It can upgrade to transform into the Jet Tengu, a VTOL air superiority fighter. Can detect stealth.
  • Striker-VX: Anti-air walker that can spew out surface-to-air missiles into air. It can upgraded to transform into the Chopper-VX, to combat incoming ground targets with air-to-surface missiles. Require Command Post.
  • Megalodon: Powerful assault walker designed for melee combat with plasma blade, excellence durability and quite fast (for a heavy tank). It also immune to hijacking, mind control and only slowed down by EMP effects. Commandos, however, can plant charges on it legs to bring it down. It leaves behind a husk when destroyed, which can be captured or destroyed. Require Tech Center.
The Assault APC (From Generals 2), the Tengu, VX (both from Red Alert 3) and the mighty Megalodon (from Reign of Steel mod)
Aircraft
  • Cannot build any "traditional" aircraft.
Upgrade
  • Cannot purchase Sensor Pods, Hardpoints, Stratofighter and Railgun Upgrade.
  • AP Ammo upgrade benefit Riot Squad and Tengu
  • Transform Modules: Allow Robo Tengu to transform into the Jet Tengu and Striker-VX transform to Chopper-VX. Purchase at War Factory.
  • Smoke Launcher: Allow Assault APC and Predator Tank launch smoke grenades at targeted area, creating a smokescreen that lasts for 6 seconds and greatly reduce sight range and attack range of units caught within. It can also force garrisoned infantry out of buildings. Purchase at Command Post.
  • Expanded Missile Pods: Expands the Missile Pods for Pitbull and Striker-VX, allowing more missiles per salvo. Purchase at Tech Center.
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Increase Robo Tengu, Striker-VX and Megalodon speed by 33%. Megalodon also gain immunity from EMP effect. Purchase at Tech Center.
Support Power
  • Cannot use Orca Strike and Bloodhounds.
  • GDI Airborne summon two Riot Squads and two Missile Squads instead of two Rifle Squads and two Missile Squads.
  • Drone Strike: Call in kamikaze drone which crashes itself onto targeted area, explode and causing high damage. Summon 3 drones initially but every GDI War Factory present on the battlefield will release an additional Hunter-Seeker drone upon activation. Require Command Post.
  • Instant Service: Call in a flock of 3 Service Drones with timed life anywhere on the map that can heal and repair adjacent allies units. Require War Factory.
Notable Events
  1. Clear House. Location: Kobe, Japan. After the Firestorm Crisis, Empire of Japan and the United Republic of Korea, designated as Blue Zones B-6 and B-7, entered a decade of rapid development thanks to geography locations, efficient governments and technological advances. But shadows of previous conflicts still remained and now, they stir once again. Dr. Liang, a newly appointed chief scientist of J-KDI, accompanied by Battle Commander Sato in a riot control mission in Kobe. The investigators discovered that riots incited by the local Yakuza and backed by NOD. A MCV with escort arrived and quelled the riots by destroyed all hidden NOD infrastructures around the city. At one of the base, J-KDI found documents about a large operation in nearby Osaka Port.
  2. Hand of Darkness. Location: Osaka, Japan. From the documents J-KDI discovered NOD had secretly taken control of Osaka Port operations through several Yakuza shell companies. There, they established a base, hidden by Disruption Towers to wait for a "special shipment" arrive. J-KDI sent a Commando task force to intercept the cargo. As the Commando arrived, he cut through NOD patrols and secured the cargo ship. With the cargo carried away by a V-35 Ox, J-KDI sent in their MCV to build a base and proceed to eliminate NOD presence in the port.
  3. Hidden Vipers. Location: Ningbo, China. The cargo contained parts of a liquid Tiberium base explosive device and from NOD captives and documents, they intended stage a "test" in Tokyo area. This information raised concern for both J-KDI and GDI alike as such attack will cause massive casualties. Doctor Liang traced back the device is manufactured in Ningbo, China and had signatures of his sister, Jade Liang, now a defector. GDI Council authorized a joined assault on China Yellow Zone and put a stop to these devices production. After a bombardment, Steel Talon vanguards landed at the port while J-KDI mech wings escort Hovercraft upstream Yong Jiang river to strike at the rear. However, the city is defended by Emerald Vipers, a NOD faction specialized in toxic and liquid-T weapon. The Vipers led by Jade resisted fiercely to defend their facilities but crushed eventually. Jade escaped with only a handful of troops and GDI claimed their victory.
  4. Incoming Storm. Location: Tumangang, North Korea. Several years passed since NOD Incursion and GDI slowly diminished their military forces. But J-KDI still maintained their semi-independent status and continued to developed new weapons. Recently, there words of a huge NOD armored column pushed down from Siberia toward the Korean Peninsula. Commander Sato had been mobilized to Tumangang in the Russia-North Korea border to intercept NOD advance. He arrived and begin fortified river crossing just before NOD first wave arrived. After the first wave intercepted, second wave arrived and set up shops at the opposite river bank. From there, NOD aircraft and infantry can support the third and fourth wave directly, giving Sato a hard time, however, no vehicle crossed the river. Just before the last wave, Sato receive information about the attacks on GDSS Philadelphia and Japan. He quickly finished the last wave and returned to Japan.
  5. Day at the bay. Location: Yokohama, Japan. NOD attacked a GDI Council's installations in Yokohama and J-KDI called in as reinforcement to take back Ion Cannon Control Centers there. However, there early reports that another GDI force already there. Feeling something amiss, Commander Sato send a Commando and a Sniper Team to investigate the situation. Turned out, a GDI Insurgent, the Dark Eyes Insurgency (D.E.I) had taken control of the Ion Control Centers there and in process of stealing an Ion Cannon for there usage. After a brief skirmish, Sato cannot stop the D.E.I from finished taking control an Ion Cannon. At this point, the D.E.I commander propose a deal with Sato, as they willingly to help him take back the vital port of Yokohama in exchange for a blind eye, as GDI Council not giving J-KDI access to Ion Cannon Network either. Having no better choice, Sato agreed and the combined GDI wiped out remaining NOD foothold in Yokohama. Before leaving, the D.E.I generously provide Sato a shocking new: Dr. Liang life is under threat by his little sister, as she going to attack at San Diego Conference, where Dr. Liang and many GDI top scientist currently in.
  6. Santa Coming, Too. Location: San Diego, California. Dr. Liang and San Diego base had been warned about the coming of NOD forces. However, the defense of the base fall in local GDI hands, as Dr. Liang forces are only a handful of guards and mechs. As the Vipers approached, they were caught surprised by J-KDI transform mechs and Vipers aircraft soon removed out the sky as their home Air Tower destroyed. This angered Jade and she soon send in more troops to the meat grinder. In the moment the base about to fall, an APCOM reinforcement wing arrived and bombed NOD forces to oblivion. Jade herself forced to abandoned the battle, leaving behind many Vipers casualties behind.
  7. Relics of the Past. Location: Point Hope, Alaska. Having stabilized the Blue Zones, GDI High Command planned for a retaliation strike at NOD. J-KDI Command didn't sit still either, as they're dangerously close to the China Yellow Zone. However, to J-KDI also lack the capability to strike deep into China mainland where NOD headquarter is. Dr. Liang proposed a bold idea: by using an old experimental device Allied forces used during the Third World War, they can teleport a limited number of vehicle directly at NOD headquarter and destroy NOD from inside out. However, this device currently mothballed in a abandoned base in Alaska, with rumors of NOD activities in the region. As the plan when through by GDI High Command, Dr. Liang and Sato lead and expedition to dig out the old Chronosphere and charged it to full. While Dr. Liang busy restore and recharge the Chronosphere, Commander Sato take charge of a naval battle with two NOD Battleships and their escort.
  8. Chrono You Didn't. Location: Nanchang, China. With the old Chronosphere device fully charged, J-KDI begin their raid on NOD Asian Headquarter in China. After clear out a NOD outpost, a MCV with some mech teleported and begin set up shops at the west bank of the river. Local Black Hand alerted of J-KDI presence and sent a Purifier with a few Scorpions to intercept GDI but soon torn to shed by mech reinforcement. This, however, do not deter the Black Hand and NOD from sending in more troop and vehicles at the J-KDI base, stalling J-KDI advance for a time. After a few round of reinforcements, Dr. Liang inform commander Sato that the Chronosphere will reach it limit soon, but a ZOCOM commander volunteer to arrived at a last batch reinforcement. A ZOCOM MCV with some vehicle and two MARVs soon teleported in was the last reinforcement, but they are more than enough. Together with ZOCOM, J-KDI pushed forward and even destroyed a Black Hand Redeemer, forcing them to retreat. The main NOD base soon followed suit and fall to the combined might of the two MARVs. With their Command Headquarter destroyed, NOD forces in China soon fall to disarray. This mission is a total victory.
  9. Doomsday Countdown. Location: Incheon, South Korea. The situation in the Far East is stabled and only minor NOD resistances remained but a large number of NOD had escaped their demise. Peace finally there, but it is short lived, as the Earth under attack by an unknown Aliens. There crafts landed across the globe and their forces strike in every Blue and Yellow Zones. A Drone Platform had landed in Incheon and Commander Sato sent to deal with it. A strike team arrived from sea and encountered heavy Alien patrols. Battleship called for bombards to clear a landing zone for an J-KDI outpost. The alien deployed their Rift Generator, intend using it to wipe out any humans resistant. In face such mass destruction weapons, J-KDI authorized the use of Tactical Nukes and a Silo is deployed. With the help of a EMP Control Center, J-KDI disrupt the Rift Generator long enough for their forces to destroyed the Rift Generator and nuked the Drone Platform along with any remained Aliens to oblivion.
  10. Under the Sacred Mountain. Location: Mt. Fuji, Japan. When Commander Sato busy dealing with the aliens in Hiroshima, Dr. Liang received distress signals from a GDI facility in Mt. Fuji. Apparently, his little sister, Jade attacked the facility to eliminate a high ranking NOD defector sheltered there. But the Aliens arrival foiled her plan and now she caught in the crossfire between GDI and Aliens. This opportunity cannot be missed but J-KDI had given order to prioritized the defector safety first, thus Dr. Liang led reinforcements to Mt. Fuji. He arrived from the north to the final GDI base there while Jade three base besieging them. As for the Aliens, there coming from the South, keep hammering Jade from behind. J-KDI first recaptured the Power Plant to reactivate the remain defend system, which temporally push Jade forces back. Afterward, they begin to hammer Jade bases while she fend off the Aliens. Cannot withstand any further, Jade flee again, abandoned remaining forces to their fate. The Aliens also dealt with afterward and the defector escorted to safety.
  11. Shipwright. Location: Naval Base White Beach, Okinawa. A ZOCOM aircraft carrier task force arrived in Okinawa for emergency repair and refuel. The carrier carried with it a special cargo and under attack by the Reaper-17 pursuers. J-KDI sent Commander Sato to unsured the cargo safety. When be Carrier under repaired, all sirens sounded as Alien Storm Riders approached, but all shot down. Soon, more Aliens ground forces arrived along the north beach while more Storm Riders flied in from the sea. J-KDI and ZOCOM hold off the Aliens long enough for the Carrier Task force to repair and refuel, then escort the task force to high sea, after destroyed the Alien foothold in the region, of course.
  12. Race of Arms. Location: Threshold 14, Guangdong, China. The cargo had reached safety in the high sea while the Aliens pursuer retreated. GDI High Command, alerted of Alien's Towers in the Red Zone, planned to destroyed them before they finished constructing. J-KDI had been assigned to bring down the Tower in China Red Zone, code name Threshold 14. When the vanguard arrived, they found themself not only facing Alien but also NODs. Under pressure from both side, J-KDI hold on to their footholds while withering down Alien and NOD forces. Soon, Dr. Liang informed that a special Chrono delivery is coming. Commander Sato send the signal for three warheads to teleported near the Phase Generators and denotate them, reduced a huge chunk of Alien base to dust. With the Phase Generators outed, the Tower is now vulnerable and a nuclear strike later, it blew to smithereens.
  13. Of Brother and Sister. Location: Giraud-Moebius Tiberium Crater. Five years after the Third Tiberium War, GDI now stand victorious and the Brotherhood back to it shadows once more, J-KDI busying rebuild their city and society when Dr. Liang receive a shocking news, his sister, Jade Liang had betrayed Kane and now withdrawn to her final stronghold deep within Central Asia Red Zone. Dr. Liang asked for permission to finish business with his sister and authorized by GDI High Command. As Jade stronghold is hard to breached, J-KDI use a more bold approach, drop a MCV dropped from orbit inside her compound and destroy it from within. As J-KDI about to attack, the Marked of Kane already begun their assault. This created distraction needed for the MCV to make land fall and how can Dr. Liang refuse such a chance. A MCV task force dropped behind Jade lines and start to set up shops while Jade busy fighting cyborgs. Only when she realized her defend line pincered by both mechs and cyborgs then it is already too late. Not willing give up, Jade activated four Cloning Vats, devices left behind from Soviet-era that can clones every infantry Jade forces have trained. Fortunately, the Kenan Corp reinforcements arrived and together, the three forces pushed toward Jade headquarter. Jade in her madness, denotate a Liquid-T Bomb, intended to take the attacker down but ultimately failed and captured by J-KDI troops. After a brief conversation, Dr. Liang bid farewell to his sister and handed her to a cyborg, then a gunshot rang ....

That all for this post. If you have any opinions, please let me know in the comment section below as usual. The next post is right about the corner as I take for a change and do a Kilian Loyalist NOD sub-faction next time. Thanks you for reading and I hope to hear from your comments soon. Best regards.

2024.05.15 09:29 Low-Reply5432 I got shouted at in Leics town centre.

I didn’t know whether or not to post this on here but it is still annoying me despite standing up for myself and shutting them up.
I work for a delivery company and was working yesterday on an afternoon shift.
I had a delivery near Leicester town centre, it was down a pedestrian area with a long strip of shops.
I got out of the van and walked down to look for the flats I was supposed to be delivering to.
I walked past a group of 4 asians, 2 women and 2 men probably early 20s and they started staring at me.
I got about 10 metres away and heard one of them say ‘is that a trans’
I just ignored it and carried on looking down the road while walking.
So the guy decides to shout really loud across the street ‘Yo, are you a tranny’
I knew straight away he was going to harass me so as soon as I heard him say tranny I turned around and shouted back ‘go f*** your mother’ as the 2 guys were standing back looking at me.
He said something about the way that I walked, ‘why do you walk like that’
I had never been told I walked weird or felt I walked weird.
I replied ‘How can you take the piss out of anyone, you look like a toothpick. Maybe hit the gym sometime, i’m on female hormones and look bigger then you’
He proceeds to laugh with his friend and says ‘do you want some of this and points at his d***’
I said ‘put your c*** away, the kids don’t wanna see that.
It stopped with them laughing and walking off in the distance.
When I finished my drop off, I had to reverse back out and they didn’t say anything more when they seen me again.
I am glad I stood up for myself and I do think he was quite shocked that I actually stood my ground and said stuff back.
I used to do boxing for a very long time and weight training so I grew up on that and know I can look after myself which is why I was not scared to defend myself.
I am more annoyed we have to deal with this stuff just for kinda being there
 existing

I am not one of those types to tell work or report it because I feel weak doing that plus I did swear and shout back. I prefer to deal with things myself.
Not one person intervened when this happened despite shouting across the street, they all just looked and carried on.
The reason for writing this is that I worry about the people that are not as physically strong and are more passive.
I definitely would have defended somebody if I seen that happening

2024.05.15 09:09 LucarioOfLegends [100 Girlfriends] No, body swapping is not an excuse to bypass consent.

100 Girlfriends is a series that I think is pretty neat, considering its been my hyperfixation for the past couple of years. It's very much a solid riff at the genre of harem romcoms and takes at lot of time to actually break down each member of its cast and really ask how their character quirks really affect them, eventually transforming into world's weirdest group dynamic, where more attention is given towards how each girl interacts with each other as the cast expands ever further. Though that doesn't stop the showcases of sheer love and dedication that Rentarou is willing to convey every time he gets the spotlight. Also its funny as hell.
Hardly means its perfect though, as people have pointed out the many flaws of the story, including its pacing, the questionable nature of its relationships due to the age gaps and familial relations, as well as a general dislike of the whole 100 soulmates plot device. I'd love to discuss and refute these point in a later post (particularly the last one boy do I have counterarguments to certain objections) but this prelude is long enough as is, so let's get talking about the main subject of this rant: Chapter 119 aka Fondle Festival 2.
Momiji Momi is the 15th girlfriend introduced, and she has a naturally contentious main quirk. She is a training masseuse with a fascination for soft things, a fascination that spreads specifically to the body parts of others. This results in a penchant towards groping both the girls and Rentarou alike, usually with no direct ask to do so from Momiji.
This is a questionable trait and runs the natural risk of turning her into a Mineta, but a few different factors keep it decently justifiable. The main point here is she is constantly giving out massages to Rentarou's Family and others, usually before any sort of inappropriate gropage. Hell, her first interaction was Rentarou finding her after massaging the school's entire tennis team, who had literally collapsed from the sheer pleasure and relief of the massage, and in her introduction to the group proper she straight up offers to massage the rest of the cast first and foremost, and only after is the cast willing to offer up their bodies for feeling up. It takes on a sort of transactional exchange, the cast gets free massages from Momiji, and Momiji gets to indulge in her urge to touch where she wants (sans probably the d and the v). And the entire cast seems pretty fine with it, not really reacting after a while most of the time.
Momiji also isn't just focused on the fanservice bits; her penchant for soft things stretches to bouncy house, hot buns, bread dough, and Nami boob mouse pads. Even just looking at the human body she is interested is far from boobs and butts, going to cheeks, stomachs, hands, arms, and backs. While she still is there to highlight the goods when the time comes, Momiji comes off much more than a character exclusively meant to justify fanservice, even if she is debatably the simplest and flattest girl of the main cast so far.
Enter Fondle Festival 2, generally considered one of the series few actual misses chapter wise alongside the obnoxious introductory chapters of Chiyo as well as Beef Tongue, which I could write an entire other rant about so help me god. But Fondle Festival 2 has its status for a reason, as it very much murks up the ideas of consent.
To keep things brief, Momiji ends up swapping bodies with Rentarou through the powers of a convenient drug brewed up by resident ridiculous scenario causer Kusuri, and immediately goes to grope the boobs of every single girl on the rooftop with her new boy hands without the girls realizing its Momiji for a significant amount of time and absolutely without them giving a clear thumbs up.
Consent is a bit of a grey area in 100 Girlfriends more generally, mainly because as a gag series it does have a status quo that it needs to maintain for its cast. Usually most characters are pretty good about their ridiculous demands in terms of directly asking about it, but no matter how many times the characters say no or tell them to stop, such questions and actions will of course continue in the next chapter simply due to wanting to be able to pull out those traits for jokes again. Momiji herself is a perpetrator considering how often her groping is considered a gag in a panel even if it is making the characters uncomfortable, though she is far from the worst offender (looking at you Hahari). For the most part characters are willing to call out stuff that is actively bad and say in pretty uncertain terms that its terrible, but this stuff still does happen due to the nature of the genre and how characters are defined.
In the context of Fondle Festival 2, the girls in question are...mostly okay with it? They acknowledge that this is a weird situation and bunch actually take advantage of said situation to fulfill their less than kosher desires, and by the end its revealed that basically all of them caught onto what had happened and were totally taking advantage of it.
The problems start with only most of the girlfriends being okay with it. Uto completely breaks her chuuni bard persona and is left frozen in shock at such an event, unclear if she was okay with it. Several girls try to get Momiji to stop and get an unwanted grope because of it, and Mimimi straight up slaps Momiji (who Mimimi assumed was Rentarou) and insinuates for them to stop, but Momiji continues undetered. Multiple girls very clearly and explicitly give a sign that they are not okay with this and they need to stop, yet Momiji continues to make them feel uncomfortable.
My largest problem, however, is when you realize that Momiji is using Rentarou's body for this. Rentarou is a bastion of chastity in essentially every regard, going to frankly ridiculous length to prevent any sexual advances from the girls or himself. He straight up does not allow himself to think of the girls in a sexual if he can allow it, as he sees it as demeaning of the girls themselves and that would be a failure on his part. Is it a kind of ridiculous belief? Yes. Is it still his own belief that he holds up to the best of his ability? Also yes, and that needs to be respected.
Fondle Festival 2, in my humble opinion, does not respect that belief in a really frustrating way. I can't say for certain what good body swapping etiquette is, but I don't imagine that going off in someone else body and doing something that stands directly against their characterization, especially since Rentarou was knocked out for most of this, and Momiji even ends up groping Rentarou/her own chest, which makes this even murkier.
Momiji does end up getting some level of comeuppance by the end of the chapter through a taste of her own medicine and she fully apologizes to the girls about the whole incident in the bonus page of the chapter, but I'd argue the damage has been done and it doesn't stop the gross feeling I got when reading the chapter, either the original japanese raws or the translated version.
While I can shrug off a lot about this series, this flagrant ignoring of both the girls and Rentarou in this situation for the sake of a bit did not jive with me. Consent is important y'all.

2024.05.15 07:41 heartbrokenorange questions abt subway/bus commuting from university city to center city

hi all, im a 20 yr old (Asian) girl doing an internship this summer at Philly. I leased a place at university city which is super safe but what i am concerned with is that would be be uncomfortable/dangerous commuting to center city abt 8:30am and 5:30pm? I know the safety of the center city is guaranteed but im worried abt the septa. im from new york so i thought i could totally conquer the public transit here but the first day i arrived the mfl slightly freaked me out, there’s no other females waiting for trains and one guy kept talking to me, and it was even 12pm
so im wondering should i take the bus instead or the septa should be safe

2024.05.15 05:05 Chillyfridays Disturbed by a violent comic

TW: Discusses SA and stalking, although not graphically in any way.
I want to preface this by saying, I'm new to being a women, I (35F) started transitioning MtF last year. I'm discovering just how scary this world can be for women. Not that I didn't have any idea before, but experiencing it is something else entirely. I started "passing" somewhat recently, and it's made being out in public, especially alone, very stressful. Something I wasn't prepared for tbh. When I didn't pass, or was clocked as trans, men left me alone. So I think being a "pretty woman" has the most to do with it. I'm whistled at, catcalled, told to smile, have unwanted comments made about what I'm wearing or my body. I've been stalked, followed into a bathroom, and groped (separate events, different guys). All within the last 4-5 months. Needless to say, my confidence about handling myself around the general public has been shattered. I honestly didn't see this happening that badly to me, a 6' tall 160lb 35 year old transwoman. Blows my fucking mind.
Anyway, point being is that I've been particularly sensitive to discussions around SA and violence against women. I find it extremely triggering, and a stupid graphic novel I read recently is just living in my head, torturing me. In brief, it's about a young women who is kidnapped and assaulted by a stalker. Why oh why did I read that comic when it's literally a huge trigger for me? Your guess is as good as mine. It was like a train wreck, I couldn't look away. It was stupid of me to do. Something about it kind of broke me, however.
I've been having nightmares about the male antagonist, I feel like I'm actually being stalked to some degree, even tho I know I'm not. I'm paranoid, having trouble socializing, I'm not eating much, I think about that poor fictional woman constantly... I honestly don't know what's wrong with me, but it's honestly kinda embarrassing. It isn't real, but all I can see is myself I her situation. I've never experienced anything like this before, and I hate it. It sounds ridiculous to say outloud, but it's seriously harming me.
My best guess is that reading all of that brought the new fears forward based on my recent bad experiences. But still, I feel like a fictional story shouldn't be tormenting me like this. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is there something wrong with me? Should I seek professional help? If so, what kind?
Any advice or support is welcome.

I'm a 5'8 17 y.o who started playing basketball 3 yrs ago. I'm from a south East Asian country so I'm fairly tall for my age. I've recently started training 3 times a week.
I see there were some people around my height like Nate Robinson few years ago. My question is if I got the gym hard & play for my cities B team (moved up from C this month) can I make the NBA?

2024.05.15 00:15 Ur_Anemone Ending gender-based violence means building beyond prisons

Ending gender-based violence means building beyond prisons
Organizations like Desis Rising Up and Moving help South Asian communities reimagine safety outside of police, courts, and prisons

For immigrant women across the U.S., the control exerted by their male partners only serves as the foundation for other forms of abuse—and domestic violence is an epidemic with deadly consequences. Every minute, nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that for women under the age of 44, homicide is one of the leading causes of death, and nearly half of all victims are killed by men who are current or former intimate partners. Sixty-five percent of immigrant survivors have experienced some form of immigration-related abuse, according to the National Organization for Women.
Despite the dangers women face in abusive relationships with men, women are still criminalized when they defend themselves—and the consequences can be especially dire for immigrant women who potentially face family separation, detention, and deportation

Immigrant women and children in mixed-status families can be particularly vulnerable to domestic violence. Abuse rates among immigrant women are as high as 49.8%, almost three times the national average. While domestic violence is largely underreported, immigrant survivors are even less likely to report abuse due to fears of detention and deportation

In recent years, organizers have turned to collective defense campaigns to garner public support for criminalized survivors
These campaigns advocate for their safety and freedom through petitions, rallies, fundraisers, and other events. According to a recent report by Survived & Punished, a group that leads campaigns for survivors, these strategies create “a powerful locus of mass support, connection, and political momentum for survivors who are isolated through incarceration and media distortions.”
These campaigns have changed many survivors’ lives. An overwhelming number of criminalized survivors are Black women. For example, Marissa Alexander was convicted in 2012 of aggravated assault charges after firing a warning shot when her estranged, abusive husband attacked her. The National Free Marissa Now campaign exerted media and political pressure, eventually helping her legal team appeal her conviction. Alexander was freed in 2017. Campaigns like Alexander’s raised national awareness around the issues facing criminalized survivors and paved the way for other survivors

The experiences of criminalized survivors capture the limitations of the carceral system’s efficacy in addressing gender-based violence and, more broadly, the role of the state in finding solutions.
Among the groups working to combat gender-based violence, some use an organizing approach focused on fighting for the freedom of criminalized survivors or combating the roots of violence in their communities. Others offer direct services to survivors, connecting them to shelters, lawyers, and government assistance...
Direct service organizations are often limited in their scope because they receive government funding, according to Amrita Doshi, the executive director of the anti-domestic violence advocacy group South Asian SOAR. Specifically, the funding comes from legislation like the Violence Against Women Act, “which defines gender-based violence as a crime and directly invests in carceral solutions as the primary solution for gender-based violence,” Doshi said.
This presents a “Catch-22” for many organizations, according to Doshi, because while they can expand with government funding, they also cannot explore alternative solutions outside of the carceral state.
Even with funding from the state and other donors, service providers across the country are struggling to meet the needs of survivors. For example, according to a national study from the National Network to End Domestic Violence, over the course of just one day in September 2023, 7,143 survivors had unmet requests for assistance from a domestic violence organization to help them find shelter, leaving them unable to find a shelter, hotel, motel, transitional housing, or any other safe option to escape abuse.
To Nourn, it’s clear that the solution lies in grassroots organizing separate from the state and service-based organizations. The Asian Prisoner Support Committee often organizes mutual aid for survivors to ease their financial burden so they can attain basic necessities while also having the financial ability to heal and grow

In Nourn’s work with criminalized survivors and their loved ones, she prioritizes the needs of survivors as opposed to the interests of the state that focus on prosecution. “It’s collectively working as a community that we are able to support each other to address harm and safety, and that’s what organizers do as opposed to domestic violence, gender-based, state-funded organizations,” Nourn said

Approaches outside of the carceral system have proven successful across various communities. Take for example the work of Lavender Phoenix. As a way to address anti-LGBTQIA+ and gender-based violence, the organization works to move resources away from policing and funnel them into housing and community-based solutions.
“Last year, we started a free peer counseling program led by and for queer and trans API, and that team trained more than 35 peer counselors and provided that free mental health support to more than 20 folks,” Wang explained. The group also trains individuals on how to address interpersonal violence and establish safety networks so people have alternative contacts in moments of crisis instead of calling the police. Lavender Phoenix also launched a campaign calling to redirect the police budget in San Francisco because, as Wang said, increased policing is a “temporary and false solution.”
LGBTQIA+ people are more likely than their cisgender and heterosexual peers to experience intimate partner violence at some point in their lives. LGBTQIA+ communities also face tremendous barriers to seeking help, according to the Williams Institute. For example, legal definitions of domestic violence often exclude LGBTQIA+ people, and there are few assistance resources for these communities

Organizations across the country are charting their own paths for addressing violence in their communities. For example, in Minneapolis, Man Forward is “transforming masculinity” by creating ways to hold men accountable for harmful behavior outside of the criminal legal system. The organization receives referrals for participants from workplaces, organizations, and community members and offers one-on-one coaching and healing circles

2024.05.15 00:07 urbanstoop88 “Fancy” restaurants for little kids

We have been working on table manners with our kids (2 and 4) and now our 4yo is asking about going to a “fancy” restaurant to put her skills to the test. We’re big foodies so I would love to indulge this. What’s the “fanciest” restaurant we could conceivably take a 2 and 4 year to? For an early dinner or a late lunch on the weekend.
I’m picturing an old-worldly-setting that would seem fancy to a four year old (candles and table clothes I guess?) and maybe a patio/outdoor garden type thing where it’s not so stressful to be with little kids. Open-ish kitchen would be cool. Preferably not Italian- we’ve been to carmine’s and it was kind of a fail because our kid isn’t crazy about tomato sauce. Big yes on seafood, Asian, American, steakhouse. And most importantly somewhere where the food is actually good and staff would be sweet and accommodating and other patrons not completely horrified. Ideally somewhere on the 123 train so we can get home afterwards too.

2024.05.14 23:47 KyleKKent OOCS, Into A Wider Galaxy, Part 003

~First~
(Writing, writing, writing: Muse crashes, burns and refuses to respond. Great.)
The Buzz on the Spin
“That’s the third time the call was dropped.” Hoagie states the obvious.
“From what I can tell they’re being hacked like it’s the latest fad. Even if our call goes through clean it’s going to be seen by an audience of several billion at least.” Demon replies. His tiny little girl is sitting on his shoulder so everyone’s watching their language, even Zsebreza. Sure, Kathy was growing quick and was developing a good sense of humour, but not even Minisi wanted to be responsible for teaching her the naughty words.
It takes several more tries with the bridge crew chuckling at things before suddenly the link is accepted to find a thoroughly unamused Asian Man glaring at them. The man then lets out a breath. “Two hundred and eighty six separate calls with the image of a woman presenting herself. I have never been simultaneously flattered and insulted.”
“Spoiled for choice sir?” Demon asks.
There is a moment of a pause as the man’s eyebrow quirks in frustration. “Yes.”
“I’m afraid it’s a common issue the galaxy over sir, we humans are hot commodity. Even a hideous slob of a man would find himself inundated with attention. A competent man with goals, ideals and motivation? A feast before the starving sir.” Hoagie says.
“Clearly Officer Eastman.” He says before relaxing a little. “I am Observer Wu. I have been charged by the nations of Earth with baring impartial witness to what has occurred the galaxy over. I have already spoken to several pockets of humanity, including but not limited to three other space stations, the newly risen nobility of Vucsa and of course, The Dauntless and the Embassy on Centris.”
“So what are you looking for? We’ve sent back numerous eyewitness testimonies and as much in the way of resources and proof of our claims that can survive the damaging effects of Cruel Space. A fair portion of exotic material and cadavers were actually supplied from this very station. What more do you need?”
“I just wish to speak with people. I will be communicating with and travelling to every major locations where humans have touched in the galaxy. To see the truth of things with unclouded eyes.” Observer Wu says and there are some nods. “Now then, if you could describe your location and posting please?”
“Certainly, we’ll do that in reverse though if you don’t mind.”
“I do not.”
“We are posted here to both ensure that we have friendly contacts in an area of interest and to learn more about the galaxy at large. Between ourselves and our fellows posted at other stations we are writing the operations manual for how to maintain, police, administrate, protect and supply a fully functional space station with a substantial permanent population. We’re also recruiting and keeping our eyes out for unusual technologies, tactics and techniques. This station alone contains a permanent population that rivals several first world nations on Earth with an industrial capacity well beyond what those nations can provide.”
“Can it now? This station is self sustaining? Food, air and other such supplies?”
“It turns out that a great deal of air is released by harvesting asteroids. Most of them contain a large amount of ice, even when they’re primarily minerals of some kind. Food is grown in hydroponics on such a scale we outright export it. The mining provides the metals and other materials for further products and again, hydroponics of a different source give us oils which leads to plastics, cloth comes in too. The station is completely self sustaining at this point. If the rest of the galaxy was to vanish then all we need are some rocks and we can keep this place going forever.” Demon explains and Observer Wu nods.
“And have you learned about these techniques and technologies?”
“Yes, however many of them are reliant upon Axiom.”
“And the control of the station?” He asks and Minisi pokes at a few of them with her tentacles to get people to shift away. “And you are... the woman in charge I believe?”
“Indeed. Although not for too much longer. I’ve had my fun but the station has become a tedium. I will admit that your species showing up has broken up the monotony a touch, but only enough to give me enough time to really make sure my heiress has this place on lock and with an unmatched command crew.”
“And you’re fine with them having that level of power?” Observer Wu asks and Minisi has a tentacle point right down at Hoagie.
“This one has been in charge of over ten percent of my station. The most productive Agriculture Decks we have are in his power, both officially and unofficially. The businesswomen there fear the flamingo shirts!”
“Hey, I got flowers on at least half of them.” Hoagie protests and she turns to him.
“Hey hey hey! Station boss or not, no horning on my hubby!” Zsebreza says buzzing into view and pressing back on the woman who leans back in amusement.
“You Charbis are so easy to rile up...” She says fondly as Zsebreza sheathes her weapon while still giving her a massive stinkeye.
“So that video was not an elaborate prank in horrific taste.” Observer Wu notes.
“Reality is stranger than fiction sir.” Hoagie notes.
“Indeed it is, and now that you’ve confused me, I am going to return the favour.” Observer Wu states and Hoagie looks from side to side and everyone else is equally baffled.
“Sir?” Hoagie asks as Observer Wu presses a button on his armrest and requests for a certain passenger to be sent up. “What is this...”
He freezes entirely as the camera shifts and he can see... “Mom?”
“Daniel!” Janet Eastman says with a smile. “And... one of those... things that got you.”
“I told you we needed to edit that video.” Zsebreza says.
“But it would clearly have been faked in some way and...” Hoagie trails off. “I... are you alright? The way out of Cruel Space is no fun.”
“It.. it was not pleasant, but I worked in the kitchens for most of it and it kept me busy.” She says.
“Familiar territory then.”
“A starship mess hall is NOTHING like a Corner Bistro in New York.” Janet says and he chuckles.
“Are you sure you’re alright? I mean... the rail shot into orbit, the initial training...”
“I’m part of the civilian experiment. To see how easy or hard it is to get people out of our little corner of the galaxy.”
“And the verdict Miss Hoagie’s mother?” Minisi asks in an amused tone.
“Something needs to be done about the zero-gravity trip. It’s too much. I’ve needed some chemical help to stay calm during parts of the trip.”
“Yeah, it’s not much better when you’re trained for it.” Hoagie says. “Are you coming here?”
“Of course! Those videos were horrifying! If those girls are walking all over you like that then I don’t care if I’m numbered two hundred to one or two thousand to one! I didn’t work my butt off as a waitress when you were a little boy just to see a bunch of bees walk all over you! So I’m putting you on notice!” She growls out.
“Okay lady, I’m giving you the private number, because I love that attitude. And because we need to get ahead of this before there’s a war kicked off.” Zsebreza promises.
“There is no war that’s going to kick off. Mother, Charbis are a very defensive species and refuse to let people see their relaxed state unless they have absolute trust. No exceptions. That’s why you’ve never seen them in anything less than one of their most agitated states. When not safely in the hive a Charbis is only a few moments away from violence.”
“Is the hive like a beehive?”
“It’s not made of waxy hexagons. It’s a bunker with innumerable defences and very comfortable on the inside. They’re so reinforced and secure that it’s the most defensive part on the station barring the other Hives.”
“Hey, you’re really pushing it...”
“I haven’t said anything secret. I haven’t shown anything secret. Anyone with working eyes can see a Hive is nearly impossible to attack if they want to live, and with how wealthy and good with crops Charbis are in general, any idiot can figure out that they have plenty within the hive.”
“Well... yes, but the idea that anyone has any idea what the hives are like...” Zsebreza says and then Janet’s eyes widen as she realizes exactly what she’s seeing.
“Oh! It’s like THAT! No wonder you haven’t bothered running. It’s not too different from home was it?”
“Tough on the outside, everything you want inside? Pretty much.” Hoagie says and a very relieved Janet lets out a sigh of relief.
“Good. I’m still coming over though.”
“But, what about back home? Aren’t you?”
“Daniel. It’s okay. The old building was... well it was soon to be decommissioned anyway.”
“Oh... and I suppose the little place out back...”
“Gone too.” Janet says.
“I see.” Hoagie says.
“Are you alright?” Zsebreza asks and he nods.
“Yeah it just... the place I grew up is gone. Even if there was a way back to Earth, a true way, then I still couldn’t got home again.”
“Everyone leaves home eventually. Not everyone can go back.” Janet says. “Still. Don’t think you’re keeping me away, just because I’ve gotten an idea about you young lady. I’m coming to make sure you’re treating my little boy right. If this is a woman’s galaxy, then this woman is making sure her boy is with the best in the galaxy. Understand me?!”
“Mom!”
“Daniel.” She says even as he gives one of his fellows a dirty look when they snort. They put their hands up and back away. “So fierce young man. Now...”
‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱×‱
He simply watches the video feed as mother and son speak. Trying to get a grip on the body language of the alien creatures. There’s a great deal of play and movement around the Charbis Bee woman, the ears are a massive tell on the Ikiya-Mas girl and the Mnenmi seemed utterly passive, in control. The men seemed either comfortable or excited and things seemed to be matching up.
Of course Mother Eastman was an open book to his practised eye, worried, putting on a brave front but the kind of woman who had given up her life to raise a child properly and was now chasing him out of not only maternal duty, but a sense of emptiness now that her great struggle was finished.
He knew her story. A sad tale of how to people, neither with families, had found each other and then shortly as life seemed to be picking up for the happy ending, an accident had taken the father, leaving a single mother to mourn and raise a child alone. A woman with no really marketable skills beyond being a woman and having a sympathetic story. She had been hired and remained hired at a moderately successful Bistro for over a decade, even being held on because she had a teenage son at home working a part time to help out.
Sad story, but one that had given her and the boy spines of steel. Still, open book regardless and...
His communicator goes off and he checks it. It is a text from an unknown number.
-Enjoying the show? ~Minisi
His eyebrows climb up a little and he reconsiders his thoughts on the octopus alien. She’s clearly very aware of things, and likely has the implants required to communicate without being obvious. Or he’s looking at a body double. Either way, she’s tipped her hand for... some reason. Which is bothering him. Why did she reveal this?
There is no way to determine without further interaction. So he replies with a simple yes.
-Good, a voyeur who doesn’t even enjoy the show is just a bore.
Is she just mocking him? This seems to be more mockery than anything. So he asks a simple question.
-Why does it matter?
-It doesn’t. You’re a prickly one aren’t you?
-Yes, I am. Is there an issue?
-Not at all.
Well that’s not useful. Is she just poking him for entertainment? She still hasn’t moved at all beyond basic shows of amusement as mother and son make plans to get her to the station and the Charbis daughter in law is putting on a clearly fake show of protesting having the woman be brought into the hive.
A hand falls onto his shoulder and he jumps in his seat a little before turning to see a smiling, but old and withered face. “Can I help you?”
“I was just wondering if I could make use of the communication relays next. As entertaining as the last few months were, I do think I should give a proper warning to my approach. If only to see how the boy responds.”
“Do you think he will respond poorly?”
“Only if he’s changed far more than I’d expect. But who knows? The mystery is half the fun of life now, isn’t it?” The elderly man says. Observer Wu considers for a few moments. This man had broken into his personal office without setting off an alarm, without alerting the guards and all the while needing a cane and with his joints audibly creaking.
“If you tell me how you broke in Mister Koga, then I think I can accommodate you.”
“Oh that? Easy enough, follow me lad, I’ll show you where you need a few more eyes. Or lasers! Lasers are always fun. Not as much as a guard dog, but having a poor inu in the vents is just cruel no matter how much you dislike chihuahuas.”
“That was rather specific.”
“I was suppose it was wasn’t it? Anyways, this way young man.”

2024.05.14 22:53 uninvitedthirteenth Travel Diary: Amsterdam, May 2-May 8

Travel Diary: I make $195,000 and spent $2149.75 (+49k points) while on a trip to Amsterdam
Section One: Bio
Age: 40
Occupation: Lawyer
Hometown: DC
Number of PTO days and how you accrue them: I earn 6 hours of annual leave every two weeks (19 days total a year), and used 36 hours for this trip
Section Two: Assets + Debt
Not super comfortable with a very detailed financial picture, but my NW is ~$750k. No SO.
Section Three: Income
Main Job Monthly Take Home: After all deductions and contributions to savings, my monthly take home is ~$6200
Section Four: Travel Expenses/Diary
Trip planning - My (40F) best friend from college (39F) and I decide to go to Amsterdam on a birthday trip. We both turn 40 in 2024, and we decide to go in May because it's in between our birthdays and because it'll be tulip season in Amsterdam! Neither of us have been. We also haven't travelled together before, despite being friends for 20(!) years, so we are a little apprehensive, although we have spent a lot of time together over the past few years. We decide on a 6 day trip. For purposes of this diary I'm going to list my half of the expenses for things we split. Costs are in US dollars, despite paying using Euros. As a side note, I also am a little over one year post-Gastric Bypass, which has a limited effect on my diet (I try to eat low carb, but you'll see that I mostly fail at this on this trip!).
Pre-trip expenses: $1193.15 total
Flight: $255 + 49k points (from Capital One)
Lodging: $1425.91 (split) - $713
Rijksmuseum: $40.28
Anne Frank House: $24.95
Keukenhof Gardens plus bus ticket: $36.20
Red Light District Tour: $50.52
Day trip to windmills tour: $43.20
Snacks: $30ish
Day 1 (Total $21.17)
Our flight is at 5:30pm, so we planned to be at the airport by 3:30pm, which actually turned out to be 4pm. Uber ($21.17). After checking bags (included in flight price) and getting through security we made it to our gate right as boarding was about to start. No time for food or drinks.
On the plane I eat a snack of roasted chickpeas before dinner, which was chicken cacciatore with mashed potatoes, bread, cheesecake, cheese, and a salad. And two glasses of wine. I save the cheesecake and cheese for later.
My friend and I watch a movie (Poor Things) and then try to sleep. I am reading A Fault In Our Stars, because Amsterdam. I try unsuccessfully to sleep for awhile and then go back to reading. At some point i eat the cheese and cheesecake. Breakfast is a cheese roll, which i eat a couple bites of (OMG does all of Amsterdam have this much cheese?? - spoiler alert
yes it does!). I wish I had slept more.
Day 2 - Even though it feels like a continuation of day one. (Total $207.02)
7am - We land at 7 and then grab the bags and go through customs. Easy peasy. We are exhausted so we grab coffee at the airport before figuring out public transit ($5.10). I take out 60 euro for cash in case we need it ($65). We buy a train ticket to the central station ($6.33) and when we get there we buy a four day unlimited public transit pass ($28.44) so that we don’t have to worry about it later.
We get to the hotel at around 9am. They tell us it will cost $50 to check in early, which we opt not to do. Instead we go get breakfast and coffee at a cafe nearby ($21.20). The hotel tells us that our prepaid amount did not include city taxes, which is another $183 (my half $91.88).
11:30am - Back at the room we decide to rest for 90 minutes. Enough to catch up on sleep but not to waste the day and get more jet-lagged. After a rest we decide to walk around and get a feel for the neighborhood and do some shopping. We find a bookstore, and I buy a copy of my favorite book from high school, Tess of the D’Ubervilles with a beautiful cover and gold edges ($21.46). We also buy fries with truffle, mayo, and Parmesan at a fry shop ($3.32) (that’s all they have and they are delicious!). We also stop a grocery store and pick up a few things including yogurt, cheese, salami, apples, and an energy drink ($13.19). We have some early days planned and nothing seems to open early. It’s very cold and rainy and semi unpleasant.
6pm - We drop stuff off, bundle up, and head off to dinner and a tour of the red light district. We try to find a place that serves Snert, a Dutch pea soup, but strike out. We end up at an Asian place instead. I get chicken satay and a beer and my friend gets Indonesian soup and wine ($16.10). Our red light tour is great, but we are exhausted after and head straight home to bed. 22k steps total
Day 3 (Total $87.24)
7:30am - We have an early day planned, and have to be on a bus near the central station by 8am. I eat a yogurt and energy drink (from grocery store) for breakfast and we take public transit (covered on unlimited card) to the station. We find the right bus and head off!
First stop is the windmills, which are beautiful! I am happy we get there early because we basically have the place to ourselves. My friend gets a coffee and we both use the restroom ($1.08!). Then we head to Edam and do a walking tour there. Next stop is a clog/cheese place, which feels very touristy but they do feed us lots of cheese. I buy a cheese slicer as a souvenir ($10.81). Next stop is another small town where we have lunch at a cafe. We basically pick one at random. My friend gets fried fish and I get a ham and cheese panini and a beer ($17.30). Final stop is an artificial island town called Maarken. We do another walking tour.
2:30pm - we arrive back in Amsterdam and get let off north of the water. I grab a coffee ($3.76). We go up to the Adam lookout and take a ride on the swing off the side of the building ($25.95 for swing plus ticket to lookout). We also grab a drink and sit on a pillow watching the city from very high up, which is lovely ($6.63). On the way out I buy a reusable water bottle at the gift shop ($4.87).
After the lookout we take the tram over to a brewery at a windmill that was recommended to us by several people (including here on Reddit!). Cost was covered by the transit pass. We buy bitterballen and a small bottle of Genever (local whiskey) (paid by my friend) and a flight of beer ($16.84). We are a bit tipsy but enjoying the lovely weather.
6:30 - On the way back toward the hotel the weather turns and it starts raining so we dip into a pub for dinner. I have a burger ($16.12). We are there at 8pm, which is momentous because it’s a day of remembrance and the whole bar is silent for two minutes. It was very interesting to be there during this time.
We are exhausted by this point and go home to bed. 19k steps total for the day.
Day 4 (Total $104.33)
7am - Another early day as we have to be on a bus at 7:30 to go to Keukenhof for the tulips! (paid in advance). We wanted to take the first bus out there because we heard the crowds were bad. I eat a yogurt for breakfast and take a 5 hour energy (no cafes open this early!). We try to take public transit to the train station but didn’t realize that the trains do not run that early on a Sunday so we grab an Uber instead ($12.20). We tell the Uber driver we’re trying to catch a bus so he makes sure we find the right place and we pull up just as the bus is loading. Phew!
8:00am - we spend 5 hours in the gardens and take literally hundreds of pictures. We are glad that we get there early as the first few hours are lovely and empty. We get a coffee ($4.60) and lunch later ($25.36). By 1pm it’s getting very crowded so we start heading out. We grab the bus back to the train station.
2:30pm - We decide to go by the Rijksmuseum although not in it because we planning that later. Instead we stop off at the Van Gogh/Rijks gift shop that’s nearby. I get a couple souvenirs, including a foldable bag and a magnet ($20.44). I also get a coffee ($3.64) and my friend gets bubble tea. We sit on the hill on museumplein and people watch. After awhile it starts to get hot (we had dressed for the early morning) so we head back to the hotel to change.
5pm - we decide we are having an evening of drinking. We first grab a drink in the hotel bar because we get free vouchers for each day we choose not to have the room cleaned. Then we have dinner at an udon place, which is delicious. We have tempura, chicken katsu, and dumplings ($15.94). Then because it’s cinco de mayo we decide to have margaritas at the Mexican place near the hotel ($15.15)! Not Dutch but it’s fun. We head down the street to another bar and have a Genever cocktail called an Amsterdam mule ($9.91). I am happy with our choice of hotel because there are so many places in our neighborhood. On the way home we pass a fresh stroopwaffle place and must get in line for one ($5.92).
By then we are exhausted and head to bed. 21k steps total for the day.
Day 5 (Total $80.44)
8am - We have a slightly less early day but have tickets to the Anne Frank house at 9:15. (paid in advance). I eat some yogurt and cheese in the room before we leave. It’s walkable so we decide to head out early and grab coffee on the way. ($3.19). The house is sombering but I’m glad we did it.
11am - After the Anne Frank house we walk to the nearby cheese museum. We sample lots of cheese. I buy one cheese to take home ($15.18). We want to walk to a used bookstore, but decide to have lunch at a cafe on the way. We pick one at random. We split chicken tenders and a goat cheese and apple sandwich and I have a beer. ($15.14). The sandwich is one of the best things we have eaten. We spend about an hour in the bookstore and my friend buys one book.
3pm - We realize we are by the monkey bar (one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam that they told us about on our red light district tour). We stop in for a drink. Ok two drinks. ($12.50). We take the metro back towards the hotel and stop in at a tile store in our neighborhood so I can buy a magnet. I buy magnets from all my trips, but I like non-touristy handmade ones if I can find them, Van Gogh magnet from yesterday aside. I buy one with a windmill on it. ($14). We also stop at the grocery store for more yogurt ($3.05) and for Dutch apple pie at the cafe across the street from the hotel ($4). We get back to the hotel and have another free drink and then rest before dinner.
8pm - We go out to a Dutch restaurant for dinner. I am not super hungry from pie so I just get the snert (pea soup). My friend gets sauerkraut and potatoes. Sorry, but I thought it was pretty bland food in general. ($13.38).
We head home. It’s a lighter day, only 14k steps today.
Day 6 (Total $194.47)
8am - Today is our last full day in Amsterdam. We have planned to spend the day at the Rijksmuseum. We want to get there right when it opens for crowd reasons. We had bought “friend of the museum” passes ahead of time so that we can skip the line. I have a yogurt for breakfast and we walk to a cafe near the museum for coffee and breakfast for my friend ($3.78). The man at the cafe is very nice and we love sitting outside in the sunshine. It’s going to be a warm day!
We spend about 5 hours at the museum. We rush to see the Van goghs and the main gallery where the Rembrandts are, including The Night Watch, which is probably one of the most famous paintings in there. We had downloaded the app so we shared a pair of earbuds and listened to audio notes about many of the works (they have a number you can enter in). We take a break outside for coffee ($7.29 - i pay) and skip the line again. Totally worth it for the more expensive ticket. Around 2 we are hungry and have seen almost everything. We stop in the gift shop and I buy a ring and earring set. ($64.76). I forget to use my 10% discount for being a friend. :( I wanted a necklace too but didn’t like the ones they had there so I’ll try to find a matching piece at home.
2pm - My friend has been trying to get herring for the whole trip so we make it a point to do that. The first place is a bust so we find a little stand that sells it a 15 min walk away. We are determined, so we head there. I don’t eat fish so I get a shawarma on the way, which is terrible (cash). I throw half away. After lunch we get ice cream. I get coffee ice cream, and it makes up for the bad shawarma ($6). We also stop at the peanut butter store, which is allegedly the first in the world, and I pick up 3 small jars for my mom for Mother’s Day ($8.11). We also stop at a thrift store and i buy a dress ($21.59). At some point this day (I think), we also stop at another bookstore, and I buy a few things including a card, a couple gifts, and a book ($39.71).
6pm - After resting a bit, we get two more free drinks at the hotel and then head out to dinner. We pick another Asian place. I get an aperol spritz at dinner and we share appetizers (satay, spring rolls, and bitterballen). We also get coconut ice cream with mango sauce for dessert. All yum! ($33.03).
We get one final drink at a local bar near the hotel ($10.20) and I’m again grateful for our choice of neighborhood. Today has been all walking because our 4-day metro pass ran out yesterday. Total steps 13k.
Day 7 (Total $36.93)
8am - this our last day. The plane was supposed to leave at 1:30pm, but we get a message that it’s delayed an hour. We decide to have a leisurely breakfast. We pick a place that’s at a hotel near our hotel. I get an egg sandwich and my friend gets French toast. We both get coffee. ($15.27)
We decide to leave for the airport around 11. We walk to the central station about 20 min away, and I buy wooden tulips for my mom on the way (cash). We buy train tickets (cash) and get right on a train. We are proud of ourselves for our navigation on this trip.
12pm - we get to the airport and through security. We head to a lounge but there’s a line. We are 40th in line based on our QR code place. We decide not to wait and sit down for lunch at a random bar. I get a sausage and a beer ($20.66). We walk around some and get another message that our flight is delayed more, to 4pm. It’s finally our turn to get into the lounge at 2:30 (2 1/2 hour wait) so we go. I grab some water and a whiskey and coke but we just ate so we are not hungry. Around 3 we head to the gate. Unfortunately when we get there our flight is delayed more and will board at 4. They give us airport vouchers so we buy a book, beer, and some stroopwaffles ($1 after vouchers). We finally board and head off around 5.
On the flight we are served dinner. They have run out of chicken by the time they get to me, but eventually find one and bring it to me later. I have a wine too. I read, watch a movie, and try to sleep a little. We have a whole row of four to ourselves so we can spread out. Dinner is a French bread pizza.
8pm - We land around 7pm (love time zone math!), grab our bags, and get a taxi to my car ($27.09). I drop off my friend and get home at 8:30. I am exhausted but cuddle my cats for about an hour before going to bed. 15k steps today
After trip expenses - $225 cat sitting
Total expenses: $2149.75 (+49k points)
Flight: $255 + 49k points
Lodging: $804.88
Food/drinks: $531.38
Travel: $101.56
Activities: $221.10
Souvenirs/gifts: $ 231.93
Final parting thoughts - I think just over $2k for an almost-week long trip to Europe is a pretty comfortable number for me. I am glad I could use points for most of the flight. We definitely didn't try to cheap out on anything. We spent a lot of money drinking (neither of us drink this much usually). I hope this was helpful to anyone, and I look forward to reactions/comments!

2024.05.14 19:54 mimlbiml AITAH for cutting off contact with my dad?

I (17F) had a strong connection to my father (65M), which we built up during the last years (during my parents' divorce).
During that time, he treated me as if I was his therapist without him nor me noticing that it is inappropriate (at this time I was at the age of 11). ‘Inappropriate’ as in too deep and personal conversations about his past and his trauma that he has experienced throughout his childhood and further, that he all dumped onto me, which led me feel emotionally responsible for him and his actions.
In the recent years (quite frankly a bit after their divorce) he tried online dating, although his preferences are a bit problematic and stereotypical (“Old white guy dating young Asian women”). During that period, he told me all about it, every single detail and further, which wasn’t too pleasing, due to me not being too mentally stable at the time. I watched him being scammed and used up until recently (one and a half years), when he met a now 23-year-old Asian woman that we will here call ‘Karen’. As they chatted and further, she was already being very problematic, as in trying to get in between me and my father, which led to them being in a sort of “on-off” situation several times. Regardless of that my father invited her to our homeland with a tourist VISA. During that time, I was at my then lowest point, not feeling too well, even after giving her a “new” chance of redeeming herself, yet she did not take any initiative to get to know me better, nor to get on my good side. Short after her arrival I had a school trip from which me and my father planned on him picking me up from the train station, which in the end he cancelled at the very last moment, due to him not trying to upset Karen, who was mad that I wanted to be with my dad / him picking me up (This being one of many examples of her regular behavior). This led to me feeling unwell and unwanted around her, which I tried talking over with my father, sadly he kept defending her behavior as it being shyness. This was obviously not true, due to her bragging with overly sexual poses on social media with posts about her being in our homeland. She left about 2 months after her arrival and has now (at the time of this post creation) returned for around 3 months. During that period of her not being around me or my father they kept being “on-off” several times, which once again shows how unserious this “relationship” is.
I’ve told my father several times about how him being with that woman is sickening, not only due to the huge age-gap, but mostly because of her behavior and actions, which I’ve tried tolerating too much at this point, yet he persistently kept defending her. I’ve stayed at home multiple days now, due to the emotional damage that has built up on me. This has led to me cutting off contact with my father, which is very hard for me, due to the emotional connection I've built up with him, yet it feels very freeing. He somehow still doesn’t understand what his actions have made me go through.
AITA for slowly cutting off contact with my dad from my life for being with an obvious and manipulative gold-digger?

Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.2: Kensuke Kita (2024 version)

Introduction

Kensuke Kita performing live, 2017
^(\This article is an updated version of my "Sound Like" article from 2021. I have reposted this article due to difficulties editing the original version*, and have included additional information and recommendations based on the increased popularity of amp simulator pedals*)*
Hello fellow musicians and Ajikan fans!
I have been a fan of ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION for roughly 16 years and as a guitarist was greatly inspired by the band's alt rock sound.
After a few years of research I have written a series of "sound like" articles for ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION. The purpose of these articles is to provide context on how the band create their signature sound, and to support beginning musicians or tribute acts who may wish to replicate it.
At the end of each article I have drafted a Budget Rig, which you could use for both at home and in a live environment. I have also provided some general amp settings to tweak and try, which are based on the band's live sound and be can used to help replicate their tones.
This is a 3-part series and if you enjoy this article I would recommend checking out the other articles:
Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.1: Masafumi Gotoh (2024 version) :
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Sound Like Part 3: Yamada : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com)
Please not that this article focuses on the band's live sound, which will be different to the albums and can vary depending on the venue. Also (and is a cliché) every musician and instrument will vary slightly due to small differences in play style and build, so also be mindful of that.
To help you recognise the individual guitar tones, Gotch's guitar parts are normally panned to the left earphone and Kita's are panned to the right earphone on the band's albums. (On 2016's Sol-Fa, Hometown and on some of the Planet Folks singles the panning was swapped, with Gotch instead in the right ear and Kita on the left)

Kensuke Kita

Kita during the Hometown UK/FR tour 2019
In this article we are focusing on lead guitarist and backing vocalist Kensuke Kita. Responsible for many of the band's iconic melodies and riffs, Kita's rig setup is a classic rock setup: a Gibson Les Paul and Marshall-esque amp.
Inspired by 90's alt rock and Brit Pop groups such as Supergrass, Blur, Manic Street Preachers and Radiohead, Kita has constantly evolved as a musician and became more involved with the song writing process from Fanclub onwards. (Kita has writing credits on Blue Train)
This evolution can be seen clearly when you compare the punk rock style of Houkai Amplifier with the more experimental, pop inspired Planet Folks. While the earlier records reflected a focus on riffs and octave melodies, Kita now prefers to play around major and minor third chords, triad chords and arpeggios, reflecting his "melody-maker" role in the band.
A triad chord is a chord made of 3 separate notes. They are commonly played on the higher strings and Kita uses them a lot, in tracks such as Aru Machi no Gunjou, Sayonara Lost Generation and Gekkou. Major and Minor third chords are sometimes referred to as Dyads if they only include two notes.
During live performances Kita is known to experiment with ambient tones, but in this article the focus will be capturing a general sound that could be used across the band's discography.

GUITARS

Kita's primary guitar has always been a variant of the classic Gibson Les Paul. The humbuckers are known to having a warmer, fatter tone in comparison to a single coil or P-90 pickup. There will be some debate over using active or passive pickups but in general Kita sticks to a more traditional humbucker, which may have less of a punch than an EMG pickup.
Kita's most recognisable guitar is his Historic Collection 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue. Kita bought the 59's reissue in 2004 and it has been a main guitar ever since, using it on every Ajikan album from Sol-Fa onwards.
Kita's Historic Collection 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue
Kita's backup guitar is a Historic Collection 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue, which is tuned to Eb/D# for songs such as After Dark and Yoru No Call. Kita's other standout guitar is his Gibson ES-335, which is used occasionally for songs with a capo. Kita has been seeing using it for performances of Juuni Shinhou no Yuukei and Maigo Inu to Ame no Beat.
Kita has also experimented with Fender Telecasters, Jazzmasters and Stratocasters on the band's albums, although neither have been seen on stage so far. In a interview with Guitar Magazine, Kita confirmed that he used a Fender Jazzmaster on Empathy.
Kita with his Gibson ES-335, during the Quarter Century Tour
Between 2002-2007, Kita armed his Les Pauls with Gibson Burstbucker 2 in the bridge position and the Burstbucker 1 in the neck position. Since 2007, Kita has used Custombuckers in both positions. Like Gotch, Kita uses Tortex Flex picks and are most likely .73mm or .88mm variants
If you are looking to capture Kita's guitar sound, a Les Paul style guitar with vintage or Gibson pickups would be the best place to start.

AMPLIFIERS

In the band's early years Kita used a Marshall JCM 900-4100 head with a Marshall 1960A cabinet. In 2005, Kita replaced the Marshall amp with the Bogner Ecstasy 101b and Bogner 4x12 Cabinet, which he has used ever since as his main live amplifier.
Kita's JCM900 amp, used during the early 2000's and Sol-Fa 2004 tour
The Bogner Ecstasy has 3 unique channels which Kita switches between throughout the show. I have included a link below which goes into more detail, but essentially the amp has a "green" clean channel, a the "blue" crunch channel and a "Red" heavy channel. The Bogner also has a boost feature that Kita uses for solos.
Channel 1 - Bogner Ecstasy 101B User Manual [Page 2] ManualsLib
Both the JCM900 and Ecstasy amps are based on vintage Marshall sounds, whereas most modern Marshall amps tend to have a slightly darker, more compressed sound.
During most of the 2000's and early 2010's Kita only used the Bogner Ecstasy for live performances, but in 2012, Kita introduced the Shinos Luck 6V combo to his live setup. The Shino's is now used for most of Kita's clean sound, with the Bogner acting as his heavy tone.
The Shinos amps were set up by a former VOX Chief engineer and in general has a blend of Fender and Vox amps tones. They have also been compared to Matchless amps, which Kita has used occasionally on international tours.
Kita's Bogner Ecstasy 101b and Shinos Luck V6
Kita's clean sound can be heard on Angou No Waltz, Mustang and Yuugure no Aka, while his heavy sound can be heard on Standard, Re:Re: and Kouya wo Aruke. Kita has been seen live using the Bogner's red channel on Ima Wo Ikite.
Kita has experimented with several amplifiers in the studio and has been known to use JCM800's, VOX, LDW and Matchless amps on albums, but for the purpose of this article we will look to emulate Kita's vintage Marshall & Bogner tone.
Kita used 4x12 Greenback speakers in his Marshall cabinet (this was used up until 2005 & has likely used Celestion Vintage 30 speakers since buying the Bogner Ecstasy. The Shino's is likely set up with the Celestion Classic Lead 80 speaker.)

PEDALS

Kita's 2004 pedalboard, used during the Sol-Fa tour
Kita's role as lead guitarist requires him to have a larger, more varied pedalboard when compared to Gotch. In the band earlier years, Kita did have a smaller setup, and was generally built around a delay pedal, a phaser, a wah effect and the MXR Dyna Comp.
During the Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol. 6 performance, where he used a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay, an MXR M-132 Super Comp, Boss PH-2 Super Phaser, a Guyatone WR3 Wah Rocker and VoxV847 Wah pedal. Kita also used a BOSS TR-2 Tremolo at this time.
Kita's 2009 Pedalboard, which was used during the Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol. 6 performance
The Super Comp is set up almost like a boost effect, to help lift the lead melodies and solos, whereas the phaser can be heard in performances of Mustang and Shinkokyuu. The Giga Delay can be heard in tracks such as Night Diving, Re:Re: and Mugen Glider, as well as the band's ambient jams. The Wah Rocker was used specifically for the Surf Bungaku Kamakura tracks, which he used heavily on the album for lead.
After the release of Magic Disk Kita's board gradually evolved to include a larger selection of modulation effects and delays, in line with the band's changing sound. He has also introduced fuzz and distortion pedals from time to time. For example, he has added the BOSS Tone Bender and Earthquaker Transmisser on the Planet Folks tour.
Kita has also implemented more octave pedals onto his board, which he uses for lead parts on Blood Circulator and the Hometown tracks Boys & Girls and Clock Work. The Electro Harmonix POG2, which can be seen on his current rig below, is used for the intro of Kakato de Ai o Uchinarase to emulate an organ sound.
Kita's current 2022 Pedalboard: (1) FREE THE TONE/JB-41S (Junction Box) (2) Jim Dunlop/535Q Crybaby Multi-Wah (Wow Pedal) (3) Custom Audio Japan/RS 616 (Programmable Switcher) (4)MXSuper Comp (Compressor) (5) Electro-Harmonix/POG2 (Octave) (6) BOSS/TB-2W (Fuzz) (7)EarthQuaker Devices/Transmisser (Modulation/Reverb) (8) strymon/ZELZAH (multi-phaser) (9) BOSS/MD-200 (multi-modulation) (10)(11) BOSS/DD-20 (multi-delay) (12) BOSS/FRV-1 (reverb) (13) Electro-Harmonix/FREEZE (sustainer)(14) BOSS/FS-5U (foot switch) (15) BOSS/TU-2s (tuner) (16) RJM/Amp Gizmo (amplifier channel switcher) (17) FIREGLOW/PPS-05 (power supply) (18) Vital Audio/VA-08 Mk-II (Power Supply)
To help manage his massive pedalboard on stage, Kita has been using a Custom Audio Switcher to control his pedals, which also allows him to create presets for each song.
The guitar runs into the Junction box (top right) and wah pedal before going into the switcher. Kita can then control the effects and amps with the switcher. I have included these loops below:
Loop 1: Dyna Comp Loop 2: Dyna Comp, POG 2, Tone Bender, Transmisser Loop 3: Dyna Comp, Zelzah Loop 4: Dyna Comp, BOSS MD-200 (using the tremolo effect) Loop 5: Dyna Comp, 2x BOSS DD-20s Loop 6: Dyna Comp, 63' Fender Reverb
Kita has a few additional pedals on the board for solely live purpose, such as the Electro Harmonix Freeze, which can hold a note for a sustained amount of time. He also has a separate BOSS footswitch to tap in a count for his delay sound.
While this may all seem complicated (and it is) many of the pedals are to recreate certain sounds from each of the band's 10 albums, or to allow Kita to experiment during live performances.
You do not need to build a pedalboard this big to sound like Kita. Instead, I would focus on Kita's main pedals, which are the dyna comp, a phase effect, a wah and a delay.

Sound Like Kita...On a Budget

Kita, Quarter Century tour, 2022
To buy Kita's current rig would cost thousands of pounds (the 59' Les Paul alone could be worth ÂŁ5,000) so much like the Gotch's post we have a few more affordable options that could get you close. The idea is to create a rig that can be used at home or in small venues to perform live, and not to emulate the albums.
Please also note that these are personal suggestions as a fan and if you alternatives find that works better for you, then great!
The main areas to consider are:
  • A 50's inspired Les Paul
  • A Boutique Marshall style amp
  • A compressor pedal
  • A Delay pedal and Multi-effect pedals
GUITAR
In terms of guitar options there are plenty of Les Paul copies, but for look and sound Epiphone is a no-brainer. The Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard is the newer, more expensive option but is based on the 59' Les Paul model, much like Kita's main guitar. You can buy one for around ÂŁ749.
Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard
The more affordable option is the Epiphone Les Paul Standard '50s, which is also a solid pick and goes for around ÂŁ500. Both guitars should also be easy to modify should you wish to go in that direction.
AMPLIFIER
In terms of affordable amps, Bogner have recently released the Ecstasy Mini 30W Head which costs around ÂŁ349. You would need a cabinet, but this solid-state amp should get you close to Kita's live sound and can work for live shows.
Bogner Ecstasy Mini 30W Head
You could also try out the Marshall MG50 and Marshall Origin amps as affordable Marshall amps with a classic sound, closer to the JCM900/Bogner style.
Outside of the Marshall and Bogner options, you could try out Bogner Ecstasy pedals, which are designed to emulate the Bogner Ecstasy channels. Please bear in mind that because you would be running these into a amp that there would be more tweaking required with the settings, but you could have a clean amp and then use the pedal for a heavy tone.
The BOSS Katana series and Blackstar amps both have British style drive channels, but would require more tweaking or pedals to help.
PEDALS
There are a wide variety of pedals to choose from, but things simple we will stick with the basic. Because of its importance to Kita's sound, I would highly recommend the MXR Super Comp. A great example of how this would sound can be on tako wasa YouTube channel, who demonstrated the pedal on this live stream. (tako also has a solid pedal board that is worth taking inspiration from!)
MXR Super Comp
An alternative approach would be to buy a Booster pedal to create the same effect, such as the Xotic EP-3 Boost
A delay pedal is also must for a sound like Kita rig (Especially those keen to play the Re:Re: 2016 intro) and Both the BOSS DD-6 & BOSS DD-8 are affordable options that can definitely do the job, while the DD-200 gives you a more versatile option and the ability to save pre-sets for different tracks.
Boss DD-8
Cheaper alternatives that you could also consider are the Tone City Tape Machine and the TC Electronic Flashback 2 Mini, which are both good options for the price.
The wah pedal is also worth looking and the Vox 845 Wah Pedal would be my shout. At ÂŁ69 its considerably cheaper than the Dunlop 535Q Crybaby (which is Kita's main wah) and should be okay for Kita's wah sound.
Finally, we are going to focus on the modulation sounds for Kita, and ultimately this is down to preference and what songs you would like to emulate. The BOSS MD-200, which Kita uses, is versatile and should cover most of effects you'll use
BOSS MD-200
For more specific pedals, the BOSS PH-3 Phase Shifter will get you close to his original phase sound, while the BOSS Harmonist is Kita's octave pedal of choice for solos.
You could also consider an ambient reverb pedal if you want to capture some of the ambient sounds Kita creates live, but is not strictly need for playing the band's songs.
AMP SIMULATOR PEDAL OPTIONS?
The final option to consider would be a Amp Simulator pedal. This type of pedal has become increasingly popular in the last few years and would be used in place of a traditional amp and effect pedals. You would then use the Amp Simulator with a IR Cabinet (a powered cabinet speaker) or with a Power Amp in between the Amp Simulator and a traditional cabinet.
They can be fairly expensive to buy and I would only advise buying one if you do intend to move on from your traditional amp/pedal setup, however the Quad Cortex DSP & Headrush Pedalboard would be good starting points. They are both aimed at capturing more traditionally hi gain amps such as the Bogner and Marshall amps, so should be able to do a good job at capturing Kita's sound.

Recommended Amp Settings

The following amp settings were based on photos from live performances and you should bear in mind that the volume may be quite loud for home use, so I would suggest bringing it down. Also bear in mind that every musician and amp will slightly differ so you may need to tweak with your settings to find the right blend.
My personal advice is to keep the gain around the middle and to use the volume to crunch up the sound. Kita does use a cabinet, so you may need to add more low end for a combo amp, and again bear in mind that the volume may need to be lower for home use.
Shino Luck V6:
Vol: 5, Treble: 5, Middle: 5, Bass: 3.5, Master: 3.5, Boost: 7, Level: 4
Bogner Green Setting:
Presence A: 8.5, Presence B: 8, Vol. 1: 5, Treble: 4:5, Mid: 4, Gain 1: 5.5
Bogner Blue Setting:
Vol. 2: 5.5, Vol. 3: 5.5, Treble: 5, Middle: 5/5.5, Bass: 5, Gain 2: 4.5, Gain 3: 5.5

Conclusion

Well, here we go. A master list of all things ACOTAR + the "real" world.

Now, do I believe every single name and location on this list was chosen by SJM with a specific real-world allusion in mind? Of course not. But when you look at the similarities, you'd be hard pressed to deny some of their very probable relations.
As far as this list goes, I've provided what was within my ability to find—coupling each with that which made the most sense relationally—though several definitions would appear to have zero connection to the story at large.
I can't promise perfection. Heck, I can't even promise 100% accuracy (though I did cross-reference the more obscure sources). And I will gladly welcome any missing pieces and/or additional insight you may have.
\Note: If a character or place/item is minor enough, I've included a reminder of their book roles.*

So come on, friends. Let's dive on in.

2024.05.14 17:56 DANJCOLEMAN1991 Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.1: Masafumi Gotoh (2024 version)

Introduction

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Zepp Tokyo for \"Quarter-Century Tour\"
Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.2: Kensuke Kita (2024 version) : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com)
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Sound Like Part 3: Yamada : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com)
Please note that the article focuses on the band's live sound, which will be different to the albums and can vary depending on the venue. Also (and is a cliché every musician and instrument will have small differences, so bear that in mind!)
To help you recognise the individual guitar tones, Gotch's guitar parts are normally panned to the left earphone and Kita's are panned to the right earphone on the band's albums. (On 2016's Sol-Fa, Hometown and some of the Planet Folks singles the panning was swapped, with Gotch instead in the right ear and Kita on the left)

Masafumi Gotoh

Gotch live at the 02 Islington, London, 2013
Let's start off with lead singer and rhythm guitarist Masafumi Gotoh, or "Gotch" for short. Gotch's was massively influenced by the 90's alternative rock, Power Pop and the Britpop scene, and has previously highlighted Oasis, Weezer and Number Girl as key inspirations.
As Ajikan's main songwriter, Gotch follows the principle of "less is more" - keeping the arrangements simple for listeners, but combining pop hooks & traditional Asian melodies with the band's punk rock and indie influences.
Gotch's playing style follows this principle, as he primarily uses chord shapes, bar chords or repeated phrases to anchor the band. (The simple approach also makes it easier for Gotch to sing while performing)
Occasionally, Gotch will use "octave chords" (more on octave chords below) or play riffs with open strings notes, to add further depth. A good example of this is the opening riffs to Easter, where he plays an open D string while also playing the 3rd and 5th fret of the A string.
Octave Chords: Octave chords is famously used in punk rock and alt rock riffs, and is when you play the same note in two different octaves. Try play a bar chord on the 4th fret of the A string, and lifting your ring finger off the D string. You should get a "C# octave chord" and will recognise it from the intro of Haruka Kanata. Octave chords are used in many Ajikan songs and by many bands, so they are good to practice!
In more recent albums, Gotch has also experimented with moving chord shapes across the fretboard. For good examples, check out the opening of Caterpillar or the bridge section of Kouya Wo Aruke.
Gotch's guitar tends to be lower in the overall mix, with Kita acting as the band's lead guitarist and Gotch as the anchor for each song. However, Gotch tends to improvise with ambient sounds during live performances and occasionally will take on the lead role in songs like Hold Me Tight.

GUITARS:

When it comes to guitars Gotch almost exclusively plays Gibson Les Paul Jr's with P-90 pickups, and has been his preferred guitar since 2004. The P-90 pickups have a bright midrange sound in comparison to the muddier humbucker sound, which makes them better suited for Gotch's focus on chords.
Gotch main guitar is the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special
The Les Paul Jr is also lighter and have less sustain and power compared to a normal Les Paul, which leaves space for the other instruments to stand out in the mix.
Gotch's main guitar is a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special, which he plays in E Standard tuning and uses for both recording and live performances. Gotch also uses a 1961 Gibson Les Paul Jr (with the pickguard missing) or a 2000 Gibson Les Paul DC (with a gloss yellow finish) for songs in Eb/D# tuning, such as After Dark or Soredewa, Mata Ashita.
Gotch's is also famous for using a 1975 Gibson Marauder during the band's early years. Gotch has mostly retired the guitar (due to the "lack of volume" for larger venues), but it regularly appears in MV's, band merchandise and occasionally during special events, such as the 10th anniversary shows in Yokohama.
Gotch's Gibson Marauder
Gotch occasionally uses a few rarer guitars live, such as the Gibson Custom Les Paul Junior John Lennon model (Gotch has number 54 of 300 such guitars made), and is normally played with a capo for songs such as Maigo Inu To Ame No Beat.
Gotch has also used a Gibson Hummingbird for acoustic numbers, and can be seen used in Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol.6 for the band's performance of Kaigan Doori. Gotch likes to use Tortex Flex .88mm & Tortex Flex Triangle .88mm guitar picks, which he swaps between depending on the song.
If you are looking to sound like Gotch, the best place to start would be a Les Paul Jr guitar with P-90 pickups.

AMPLIFIERS:

After originally touring with a Roland JC-22, Gotch has almost exclusively played Fender amplifiers since 2004. Gotch uses two amps when playing live, one for his "clean" sound and the other for his "heavy" sound.
The band's often implement a "quiet/loud" dynamic into their song writing, so Gotch will often switch between his amps during live performances, using a custom made footswitch on his pedalboard. (A good example of this is Mustang or Solanin)
For his clean tone, Gotch uses a Fender 65' Twin Custom Twin 15. It can be heard on Korogaru Iwa, Kimi ni Asa Ga Furu, Solanin and Wonder Future. Occasionally, Gotch will combine the Twin Reverb with a boost pedal or overdrive pedal for more clarity, with Wonder Future a good examples of this.
(1) Fender '65 Twin Custom 15 (clean tone), (2) Fender Vibro-King Custom, (3) Fender Super-Sonic 60 Head (which uses the Vibro-King as a speaker), (4) Fender '63 Spring Reverb (which runs in between the pedal board and the Super-Sonic 60, and is toggled on or off by a switch)
For his heavier tone, Gotch primarily uses a Fender Vibro-King Custom for recording and appears in most of the band's MV's. The Vibro-King/Twin Reverb was Gotch's main setup during the 2000's and can be seen together on Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol. 6.
In 2009 Gotch started to use a Fender Super-Sonic 60 Amp Head and still uses it now. Until 2022, Gotch would use Vibro-King as a "cabinet", acting as the speaker unit for the Super-Sonic. Gotch now uses a Shinos & L Rocket Head for live shows, but has kept the Vibro-king for recording sessions and MVs.
Since 2022 Gotch has used Shinos & L Rocket amp & cabinet instead of the Fender Vibro-King
Gotch "heavy" amps for songs such as Re:Re:, Haruka Kanata and Rewrite. It is important to note that Gotch prefers to use his amps to create his distorted tone, but will occasionally add an overdrive pedal for heavier tracks such as Blood Circulator & Easter.
Alongside the Twin Reverb and Super-Sonic, Gotch is known to use a Fender 63' Spring Reverb Unit. This unit only runs into the Super-Sonic and is used for additional reverb to "thicken the sound". Gotch can control the 63' Reverb with a on/off switch on his pedal board.
Other notable amps that Gotch has used are the Matchless C30 & Bad Cat 30R Head. Both have been used exclusively for recording, most notably on Wonder Future. Gotch is also known to use VOX AC15 amps for recording.
Gotch's '63 Spring Reverb Unit, along with a selection of Vortex Flex .88m picks
In terms of mics, Gotch seems to use a Shure SM57 for his Fender Twin Reverb and a Shure SM58 on his Vibro-King or Shinos Rocket. When you are trying to emulate his sound with modelling or profiling amps, it is worth experimenting with mic positioning and different mics.
If you want to replicate Gotch's amp sound then you should look to replicate his Fender amps. However the Vibro-King is a key component and are unfortunately rare, notoriously loud and expensive. For that reason, I have put together some alternatives that should get you close.

PEDALS & EFFECTS:

During Ajikan's early years, Gotch combined a Roland JC-22 with a ProCo RAT to create the "quiet/loud" dynamic of the band's early records. After buying the Fender Vibro-King in 2004, Gotch no longer required the RAT, but kept a simplified pedalboard to achieve certain tones for live performances.
Gotch's 2004 pedalboard, which includes the ProCo RAT and Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer
We will cover two different pedalboards that Gotch has used during the band's career. Regardless of which pedal board you look at, Gotch's has always included an overdrive or boost pedal, a phase pedal and a delay pedal.
The boost/overdrive is used to "lift" his clean sound during ballads (Solanin, Wonder Future) or to thicken his sound for heavier tracks. (Senseless, Dororo) Gotch will normally set the drive or gain low and the volume high.
The phaser is a more sparingly used pedal to add texture and colour, but can be heard on Shinkokyƫ, Blue Train and Rewrite. I will include more detail on Gotch's use of delay in the sections below.
Gotch's "Classic" Pedalboard
Gotch \"classic\" pedalboard, used between 2006-2013, with Gotch's custom made footswitch on the bottom left to control the amps
Gotch started to use this "classic" board during the Fanclub tour and continued to do so until the 10th Anniversary shows in 2013. This would be the easier and more affordable board to replicate for newcomers.
Gotch's setup started with a BOSS TU-3 tuner, which he also used as a "mute" pedal in between songs. From there, his chain would run into the Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer, the BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser and the BOSS DD-20 Giga Delay. During the Magic Disk tour, Gotch also added a Custom Audio Tremolo.
The BOSS DD-20 *has been Gotch's main delay pedal for twenty years and is set to "warp". On the warp setting, Gotch can keep his foot on the pedal to create swells of delays. Gotch's standard setting is 173-179bpm (beats per minute on 1/4 notes and then he has 4 presets. These are 137bpm on 1/4 (for) Blackout, 154bpm on 1/4 (for) Kakato de Ai o Uchinarase, 177 on 1/2 (for) Solanin and the intro of Siren and 177bpm on 1/4 (for the 2nd half of) Siren)
Gotch also included two footswitches for his board; The first one was a handmade footswitch, which he used to swap between the Twin Reverb and the Vibro-King/Super-Sonic. The other footswitch was a BOSS FS-5L, which he used to control the '63 Spring Reverb Unit.
Gotch's "Modern" Pedalboard
Gotch's \"modern\" pedal board.【Pedal List】(1) api/TranZformer GT (compressoequalizer) (2) BOSS/TU-3 (tuner) (3) Spaceman Effects/Atlas III (preamp) (4) BOSS/DD-6 (delay) (5) Spaceman Effects/Voyager I (tremolo) (6) EarthQuaker Devices/Avalanche Run (delay/reverb) (7) Mu-Tron/Mu-FX Phasor 2X (phaser) (8) Caroline Guitar Company/KILOBYTE (9) BOSS/DD-20 (delay) (10) Handmade/Line Selector (11) FAT/514.D (booster)(12) strymon/Zuma R300 (power supply) (13)BOSS/EV-30 (Expression Pedal) (14) BOSS/FS-5L (foot switch)
During the recording of Wonder Future and his first solo album (Can't Be Forever Young), Gotch began to experiment more with boutique pedals, and has resulted in a more complex board since 2014, allowing more ambient experiments on the band's records and during live performances.
Gotch has added a API Tranzformer GT to the start of his chain, only using the E.Q. section and tweaking the settings for each venue.
Gotch's "Modern" board now includes a variety of delay and reverb pedals, such as the Earthquaker Device Avalanche Run and the Caroline Kilobyte Lo-Fi Delay. These are combined with his DD-20 to create the ambient sounds heard on Empathy & the outro of Demachiyanagi Parallel Universe.
The BOSS DD-6 Digital Delay is set to the "reverse" mode and is used during the intro of Re:Re: and the bridge of Rewrite. Gotch has removed the Tube-Screamer from his board and has experimented with multiple alternative pedals, which includes the Xotic Effects AC Plus and JHS Superbolt.
He currently uses the Atlas III Preamp Booster and the FAT 514.D for his overdrive sounds. The 514.D only runs to the Super-Sonic to help "thicken" the distorted tone of the Super-Sonic.
Gotch has also replaced the Super Phaser with the MU-FX Phasor 2x and is using a Voyager I Spaceman for his tremolo. (UCLA & No Name are good references for the tremolo) Finally, Gotch has added an BOSS EV-30 expression pedal, which he uses to control the delay of the Avalanche Run.
If you are looking to replicate Gotch's pedalboard, the best place to start would be a phaser, delay and a boost/overdrive pedal, which would cover most of Ajikan's Discography.

Sound Like Gotch...On a Budget

Now that you are up to speed on what Gotch uses for his guitar rig, we can start to look at replicating his sound. The idea of this section is to offer affordable suggestions to replicate Gotch's tone that can be used for home use and for small live venues.
I would like to highlight that I am just writing as a fan and the equipment I recommend are purely my own recommendations. I do not have any sponsors (I wish I did sometimes) and if you find alternatives that work for you, go for it!
Gotch performing in 2022, during the Quarter Century shows in Yokohama
To buy Gotch's current pedal board alone would cost roughly ÂŁ2,500 and would be unrealistic for most readers to purchase, however there are options that can get us close to Gotch's tone without breaking the bank.
The key elements to this rig are:
Let's start with the guitar, which is both important for the P-90 tone. You should always feel comfortable when playing the guitar you pick, so I recommend trying out the guitar when possible before buying.
GUITARS
As an affordable guitar, I would suggest looking at the Epiphone Les Paul Jr. It is the entry level price for Gibson guitars (Epiphone would be the equivalent to "Squier" for Fender) and includes P-90 pickups as the standard setup. You can buy one for around ÂŁ380 and should also be fairly easy to modify & similar to Gotch's sound.
Epiphone Les Paul Junior
If you do have a higher budget to work with, I would recommend the Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute DC. These were released in 2019 and you can normally find a 2nd hand version for roughly ÂŁ650 - ÂŁ800. (It is also the guitar I currently use!) Failing that, you can also look at the Gibson Les Paul Special for around ÂŁ800.
Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute DC
AMPLIFIERS
We are looking to replicate Gotch's Fender amps, so the affordable option to start with would be the Fender Mustang GTX. The newer Mustang amps are an improvement on the original and have simulations of the Twin Reverb, the Vibro-King and the Super-Sonic.
The GTX 50 (which has a smaller speaker) is roughly ÂŁ390 and the GTX 100 (which includes a footswitch) is about ÂŁ510, but you should be able to find both versions for a reduced cost second hand.
Fender Mustang GTX 100
If you do have a higher budget or prefer to use a tube amp, I would recommend going for the Fender Super-Sonic Combo or the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for a solid distorted Fender tone.
Alternatively, you could consider the Fender Blues Junior, Fender Tone Master Twin-Reverb or Roland JC, and combine them with a ProCo RAT to replicate the tones from Houkai Amplifier and Kimi Tsunagi Five M.
PEDALS
To keep the list of suggestions short and simple, we will use Gotch's "classic" board as a reference and will cover most of the band's discography.
For a budget rig, I would recommend the Ibanez Tube-Screamer Mini, which is a miniature version of the standard Ibanez Tube-Screamer and sound great for the price. You could pair this up with a Boss Phase Shifter and a BOSS DD-6 Delay for around ÂŁ309 brand new to get a very similar Gotch board. (You could buy them for as low as ÂŁ110 combined on the 2nd hand market)
The Tube Screamer Mini is a cheap, effective overdrive pedal based on the classic TS808
For a more expensive pedalboard, the JHS Superbolt V2 was used by Gotch extensively between 2015-2019 and was once described by Gotch as "the Ajikan sound" on his blog. You could also buy the TS808 Tube Screamer that Gotch actually used for many years or the JHS Bonsai 9 which emulates multiple tube screamers.
For modulation sounds (phase, tremolo) the AmpliTube X-Vibe is one of many great multi-effect pedal on the market. If you have the money for it, you could buy a BOSS DD-20 second hand or the BOSS DD-200 to emulate Gotch's delay sound.
If you decided to go with the Mustang GTX, you would also have a selection of effects built into the amp.
THE TONE MASTER PRO? (and amp simulators)
As a final recommendation, Fender have recently released the Tone Master Pro (TMP), which is a multi effects and amp simulator.
It can be used as a device for home recording, but also as multi effects pedal in front of a standard amp or as your main amplifier when played through a IR cabinet. (I'll go into more detail in a bit!) The TMP are not cheap at ÂŁ1400, so I would only advise buying one if you plan to use it as your main amp and effects board.
If you have the budget and was starting your rig from scratch I would consider checking it out, as it includes great simulations of the Twin Reverb and Vibro-King. They are also easy to transport & the Fender IR cabinets only weigh 12.5kg. (For comparison, my VOX AC15 weighs 30kg and is a nightmare to transport for shows)
The TMP is Fender's first amp simulator pedal and from what I understand the Quad Cortex DSP, the Line 6 Helix series and the Headrush Pedalboard are more popular choices. However, for the purpose of "sounding like Gotch", I would start with the TMP for its Fender selection and simplicity
The Fender Tone Master Pro can be used to simulate multiple amps & as a pedalboard for live performances
If you decide to buy a Amp Simulator Pedal, there are 3 common ways to use it for band practices & live settings. (Outside of just using headphones or running straight to front of house at a venue:
Option 1: Only use the effects on the Amp Simulator and run it into a standard amp .** (Make sure to not use the cabinets settings within the pedal when doing this. You could still use the amp settings, however they may clash with the physical amps and do not always sound great
Option 2: Use the Amp Simulator as your main amp and combining with a standard guitar cabinet. In order to do this, you will need to buy a separate power amp pedal to run in between the amp simulator and the guitar cabinet. (Otherwise you will not have any volume or oomph when you play through the cabinet\*)*
Option 3: Buy a IR Cabinet. The difference between this and Option 2 is that you would not need to buy a separate power amp pedal to run into the speaker. The Fender FR-10/12 & Line 6 Powercab are good examples.

Recommended Amp Settings

The following amp settings are based on photos gathered from live performances or from photos of Gotch's social media. Every amp will slightly differ based on your guitar or playing style, so you may need to tweak with your settings to find the right blend.
My personal advice is to not put the gain too high and to start with getting the treble and bass settings where you feel comfortable, before tweaking the mids. The P-90s have a strong midrange attack, so bear that in mind as well.
Gotch's Vibro-King and Super-Sonic
Fender '65 Twin Custom 15:
(Plugged into Vibrato 1) Vol: 3, Treble: 3.5-4, Mid: 6.5, Bass: 3.5
Fender Super-Sonic 60 Head:
Channel 1: Vol: 3.5, Treble: 4-4.5, Bass: 5
Channel 2: Vintage setting ON, Gain 1: 4, Gain 2: 0, Treble: 5-5.5, Bass: 4.5-5, Mid: 5.5, Vol: 5.5-6
Fender Vibro-King Custom (as cabinet):
Plug into the speaker input at the back of the amp, with FAT switch on.
Fender Vibro-King Custom (as amplifier):
(FAT ON) Vol: 3, Treble: 4.5, Bass: 4, Mid: 5.5 (Based on Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol.6 settings)
OR
(FAT ON) Vol: 4.5 Treble: 4 Bass: 5 Mid: 4.5
Shinos & L Rocket Head:
Gain: 7, Treble: 8, Bass: 3, Reverb: 0, Master: 7

Conclusion

I hope this has been helpful for you guys, as it has been on my bucket list for some time! Please provide some feedback as it is always appreciated and if you would like more details about the effect settings let me know.

2024.05.14 17:54 jayjayelix Question about metro riding for young females

I’m planning on taking my two daughters to Tokyo and Kyoto this summer. It seems like it’ll be hot and humid, so we’ll (petite East Asian American females) probably be in shorts and t-shirts (CA Disneyland attire basically) We’ll bring coverups (long cardigans) for when we go indoors (a/c) and if we visit any temples.
I’ve heard that groping on metro happens enough that Japan had to establish females-only metro cars. Is that something we need to think about on our summer trip?
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.14 14:52 bretonstripes Week-ahead info and links: US Classic, MAG Asian Championships, NHK Trophy

NHK Trophy

This is Japan’s second and final Olympic selection event, and it will be streamed free (although I do not know if a VPN is required). Links to each day’s streams and start times can be found here. Live scoring/results at Seiko (link goes to a calendar, you’ll select days from there). The competition begins on 16 May with the women. Check your time zone difference here.

MAG Asian Championships

This is being held in Tashkent, like the recent Asian rhythmic champs, so I do expect streaming and live scoring. I just don’t expect them to be posted until the day things start. Check back here for links.
I may not be able to link directly to the live scoring. At rhythmic champs that was on a Russian domain and those are not allowed on Reddit currently due to the geopolitical everything. I will try to break up the URL should it be the same as rhythmic.
This is MAG-only, something I have just realized while writing this. (WAG is next weekend.) An Olympic berth is at stake. This will go to the highest-ranked eligible AAer. The following countries/individuals have qualified already (or maxed out their individual qualification):
Countries Individuals
CHN KARIMI Milad (KAZ)
JPN LEE Junho (KOR)
KOR† YULO Carlos Edriel (PHI)
RYU Sunghyun (KOR)
ABU AL SOUD Ahmad (JOR)
KURBANOV Nariman (KAZ)
SHEK Wai Hung (HKG)
OLFATI Mahdi (IRI)
ABDURAKHIMOV Rasuljon (UZB)
TANG Chia-Hung (TPE)
† KOR has maxed out its individual qualification.
(ERGASHEV Khabibullo (UZB) is already listed as being allocated the host country spot. My reading of the rules is that this shouldn’t be allocated until after the conclusion of continental qualifiers —meaning he should be eligible for the AA spot here — but this may be another case of the artistic rules being clear as mud.)
Event Day Time
Senior QF/AA/TF Thurs, 16 May
Junior QF/AA/TF Fri, 17 May
EF Day 1 Sat, 18 May
EF Day 2 Sun, 19 May
(Will update with times just as soon as the AGU announces some.)

Core Hydration Classic

This is the final qualifier to US Championships. Reminder that the minimum score to qualify as a senior is 51 AA (juniors need a 49.5). HOPES Championships will take place at this event as well.
All times are US Eastern.
Event Day Time Broadcast
HOPES Championships Fri, 17 May 2-4:30pm FlipNow
Junior elite Fri, 17 May 7-9:30pm USAG YouTube
Senior 1 Sat, 18 May 2-4pm USAG YouTube
