I initially wanted to ask why does Telugu did not have the suffix to represent the female gender (like '-al' in Tamil or '-alu' in Kannada, I don't know the proper linguistic term for this), but from my friend, I got to know that all the old version of Dravidian languages did not have it and the addition of female gender was recent in those languages. Is this true?
In Telugu, the suffix '-అది' ('-adi') is used to represent female gender and non living things but for male gender, the '-అడు' ('-adu') suffix was used. Even, the word 'ఆమె' ('Āme' - she), seems like a recent addition or maybe I am wrong here? Because, I have saw people using 'Adhi' (That) or 'Aa Ammayi' (That woman) for 'she'.
While, in Kannada, '-ಅಳು' ('-alu') is used and in Tamil, '-அள்' ('-al') is used to represent female gender. In Malayalam, from my knowledge, there is no suffix for both male and female gender and uses pronouns to represent genders like 'അവൻ' (Avan - He) and 'അവൾ' (Aval - She).
I don't know about how the other languages from the Dravidian family deals with the gender suffix, so, how other languages from this family represent male and female genders?
If they were recent additions, how did Tamil and Kannada followed a similar ending suffix for female gender ('-alu' and '-al') while others did not? Why did the languages did not have suffix for female genders earlier?
If they existed way before, how did Telugu did not have such feature? How did Malayalam followed a different pattern? How was this suffix in Proto Dravidian?
Another question is, I used the words "old" and "recent", so how old and recent were the changes done to the languages or each of them?
Maybe this post has some mistakes because I myself am not that good with linguistics or history of languages, so if there is any mistake, please correct me.

Background: The book below is considered to be the first novel to be created in South Asia, which has its origin in the mid 1500's in the Vijayanagara empire during the reign of Krishna Deva Raya. Pingala Suranna is considered to be one of the eight jewels; a group of prestigious scholars that worked in the royal court and made strides in different fields.
Basic plot: The whole thing is kicked off when the creator god flirts his wife using a metaphorical about two lovers and a complicated situation with a talking parrot forces him to make the fake story into reality. There are many plot lines, but the central story involves a man and woman incarnating over multiple lifetimes trying to find each other in different forms following the creator gods story.
Setting: the book is a Purana-esque setting, but not the religious variety rather the absurd variety. Think magic yogis riding lions, gender switching, a wierd double shapeshifting catfish (its makes sense in the book), a bit of black magic and human sacrifice plot line. The whole thing reads as a collections of absurd vignettes containing characters acting in an odd and peculiar manner.
Be warned: it is a 500 year old book that was translated from Telugu, so there are some question sentences and situation. Furthermore, it is a pre-Colonial work South Asian work hence there is quite a few idiotic sexual metaphors .
Nonetheless, if you have time; give it a try. You will find the plot interesting, the sexual imagery laughable or find it to be very boring and hate the archaic nature of the text. It shouldn't be an extremely hard read since the whole thing is 165 pages long and the rest of the material is authors notes.

Hi all,
I'm half Telugu American and felt very disconnected from my culture until very recently, and one of the biggest things that helped me feel like I was reconnecting with my heritage was learning to cook Indian and South Asian food.
When I visited Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including Hyderabad's Old City, for the first time, I had authentic Hyderabadi biryani and fell in love. Biryani has been one of my two favorite dishes for a long time. Recently I finally learned to cook it by myself, and I want to learn how to cook multiple variations. What are some regional biryani types both in and outside of South Asia, especially less known versions, and their defining characteristics, ingredients, and spices that set them apart?
Here's all the types of biryani I could find online (Some stuff may be incorrect, if there's anything I got wrong let me know):

• Nasi briyani (Singapore + Malaysia) - usage of Southeast Asian spices like pandan leaf, higher amount of gravy compared to South Asian biryanis
  
• Iraqi biryani - Sometimes uses vermicelli pasta alongside the rice, uses typical Arabic spices, uses spicy tomato sauce
  
• Kolkata biryani - Lightly spiced, notable for addition of potato and egg
  
• Nasing biringyi (Filipino biryani) - Rice is cooked with coconut milk and saffron, heavy usage of vegetables such as bell pepper, peas, and carrots, sometimes wrapped in banana leaf
  
• Sindhi biryani - Uses tomatoes and potatoes, quite spicy
  
• Memoni and Kutchi biryani - Very spicy, similar to Sindhi biryani but with less tomato
  
• Haji biryani (old city of Dhaka) - goat meat, potatoes, uses small amount of buffalo cheese, heavily seasoned but not very spicy. Often accompanied by borhani (Bengali drink of mint, yogurt, and spices)
  
• Ambur biryani (Northeast Tamil Nadu) - Larger proportion of meat, cooked with jeera samba rice, curd is used in the curry/gravy base, less spicy and lighter, served with sour brinjal curry. The onions in the biryani stay soft instead of being crispy.
  
• Somali biryani - Uses same ingredients as the Somali rice dish bariis iskukaris but cooked in the biryani style. Uses the Somali spice mixture xawaash, uses unique meats such as camel meat, served with banana or plantain on the side as is typical with Somali meals.
  
• Thalassery biryani (North Kerala) - Small amount of chilis, heavy usage of spices and dried fruits and nuts such as pomegranate, apricot, raisins, cashews, and almonds. Cooked with short grain khyma rice and uses chicken or beef as the meat.
  
• Kalyani biryani (Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana) - similar to Hyderabadi biryani, always cooked with buffalo meat
  
• Hyderabadi biryani - Most famous biryani type, from Old City of Hyderabad. Very spicy, lots of spices and dried fruits, usually goat meat EDIT: i have been informed that hyderabadi biryani does not use any dried fruits other than raisins/sultanas i think
  
• Shayya biryani (Uttara Kannada) - most notable for using vermicelli noodles instead of rice. Not very spicy.
  
• Kappa "biryani" (Kerala) - Very thick with lots of curry and gravy, doesn't use rice apparently. Made with beef and tapioca/cassava.
  
• Bombay biryani - Most notable for usage of plums. Not very spicy
  
• Patra "biryani" - Originates from Parsi community. No rice, is beef and spices cooked in patrel/colocassia leaves.
  
• Lucknowi biryani - Lightly spiced, flavorful
  
• Kashmiri biryani - Heavy on nuts and fruits, uses asafoetida and saffron, uses mutton
  
• Kamrupi biryani (Assam) - Uses vegetables such as beans, potato, and bell pepper that aren't used often in other types of biryani
  
• Goan biryani - Uses mackerel fish, grated coconut, very light and aromatic
  
• Bezawada biryani (Andhra Pradesh) - Uses fried chicken
  
• Gongura biryani (Andhra Pradesh) - Uses gongura (leaf used often in Telugu cuisine), gives it a distinctive sour flavor along with the spices.
  
• Thai biryani/kao mok gai - Uses a sour green sauce prepared with green chilies, mint, and coriander
  
• South African Cape Malay biryani - Similar preparation and spices to South Indian biryanis, but dal/lentils are incorporated as an ingredient.
  

These are all the regional types I could find. Aside from regional variations, there's also a lot of variations on ingredients used i.e. Chicken 65 biryani, paneer biryani, vegetable biryani, seafood biryani, etc.

Baahubali chant is something like "హే (హై? )స రుద్రస్స। హే(హై?) సరభద్ర సముద్రస్స॥". (hē (hai? )sa rudrassa. hē(hai?) sarabhadra samudrassa.. in English). Is this Telugu or Sanskrit? I thought it could be Telugu since it is different in every language version they released. If it is Telugu, is there a word by word breakdown? What I saw online doesn't make sense really.

The model is designed specifically to handle tasks for the spoken Telugu language which uses the Romanized script. It even supports code-mixing(combination of English and Telugu ), which is common in informal contexts. It is trained on completely synthetic data.
This initial version of the model is a work in progress, but it already shows promising results in handling tasks using Romanized script.

Telugu is spoken by 95 million people, mainly in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in southern India. There are just 1.2 million Telugu speakers in the U.S., but according to data from streaming tracker ReelGood, it is now the ninth most popular language in Netflix’s U.S. catalog. In Language

In Kurukh, gender is prominently indicated in Pronouns and in Verbs.
Gender in kurukh is distinguished in 2 categories, Masculine & Non-masculine. Just like Telugu i believe.
Masculine
These pronouns and verbs are only for masculine humans, rest all entities use the non-masculine. Commonly used pronouns are "Ās (he, distal)" and "Īs (he, proximal)". Masculine verbs often end with "-dan (1p, present)", "-dai (2p, present)", "-as (3p, present)"; "-kai (2p, past)", "-as (3p, past)"; "-ōs (3p, future)". Imperatives for masculine listeners end with "-ā", like "ba'ā (speak)".
Also, in common nouns for masculine relatives often end with "-s", like "nanūs (grandpa)", "babas (father)" and "taṅgdas (son)". Common nouns, like "jõxas (young boy)", also show the "-s" characteristic.
Although native names are quite rare these days, there was an interesting naming tradition, which went like, for example, taking the word "conhā (love)" and naming a boy child as "Conhas (beloved)". Most people have either sanskritic or european names, and if a masculine name ends in a vowel, people sometimes tend to add an extra "-s" to their name while speaking in kurukh. For example, Birendra becomes "Birendras", and Anthony becomes "Anthonis".
Non-masculine
These pronouns and verbs are for feminine humans and non-humans. Think of it like this, the words for feminine and neuter are the same. The words we will use for inanimate objects and abstract stuff will be the same as the words we will use for girls and women. Also, if we are talking about a male animal, we will still use non-masculine words for that.
Common pronouns are "Ād (she/it, distal) and "Īd (she/it, proximal). Imperatives for the non-masculine end with "-ai", like "ba'ai (speak)". Non-masc verbs often end with "-ēn (1p, present)", "-dī (2p, present)", "-ī (3p, present)"; "-kī (2p, past)", "-ā (3p, past)"; "-ō (3p, future)".

In society

The kurukh / oraon society is patriarchal. The head of the family is a man. Positions of power in the village councils are almost always occupied by men, even though there is no restriction to women. In arranged marriages, the bride-to-be's explicit agreement is valued as much as the groom's. The society is also patrilineal. The bride gives up her father's clan surname and takes upon the surname of her groom's clan. It is patrilocal as the bride leaves her father's house and goes to live with her groom.
Our society has great social evils. Patriarchy combined with the Alcohol addiction caused due to traditional rice beer among men, leads to their wives often being subjected to domestic violence when the men are intoxicated. This gets worse in impoverished families, where usually women tend to earn and save money for educating their children, and the money is often snatched by their husbands to spend on alcohol. Other than that, witch-hunting used to be a very prevalent practice and was only eradicated in the late 2000s.
In clothing, men wear a white turban with red stripes, along with it they traditionally wore just a loincloth a couple centuries ago, now the traditional is a dhoti with a plain white vest on top. Women wear a red and white knee length saree, we are starting to see ankle length versions of the same sometimes these days. Tattoos were exclusively worn by women, called godnā, now less seen. Also, wearing a blouse is a new concept. One can still find elderly women who don't wear blouse at all.
The good thing is there is no preference for male-babies. Parents are impartial in providing education to daughters as much as to sons.
While both men and women are migrating in large numbers from villages to work in big cities, somehow women tend to preserve the language better and men are more likely to gradually lose it.

Hi everyone. I think I’ve finally settled on a format for the list below. We’ll start with any new independent movies, including any special/advance screenings for new movies. That’s why Civil War, while being a wide release with several stars in it, is listed up top, as the Palladium IMAX is doing a one-off screening of it next Monday at 8 PM before its wide release on Thursday. Then follows the Family/Kid section and the Foreign Language section. Note that the foreign language section may also include wide releases, in the form of Spanish Sub/Dub screenings and so forth. So please feel motivated to bring your abuela and assume the impossible task of explaining to her the unlikely alliance of a monkey and a lizard.
The list will finish up with any anime movies. Speaking of which, the main highlight of this week's list is The Boy and the Heron, which returns to theaters after winning an Oscar. The "bonus content" it mentions is an introduction by Joe Hisaishi, the Composer and long-time collaborator of Director Hiyao Miyazaki, and a pre-recorded animation session with Supervising Animator Takeshi Honda. The dubbed version will feature the voice talents of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh.
I’ll also include any other movie-adjacent events around town. For instance, in the list below is the Tobin Center’s “Disney Princess” concert, which will feature music from various Disney films.

A little surprising that movie that was slated for Sankranthi release took so long to complete (I mean even with US visa issues delay for some days)

I've never watched Indian films before, but I was curious about S. S. Rajamouli's recent films.
I'm in the UK and when I look into trying to watch Baahubali 1 and 2 as well as RRR I can only find them dubbed in other Indian or European languages and not the original Telugu.
Why is it so hard to find it in the original Telugu? Especially on services like Netflix where they have multiple dubs available in multiple languages but just don't include Telugu. Even using "other means" to get the films it nearly always seems to be other Indian language dubs that are out there.
I'd rather not watch a foreign film in English but at the point that I can't get the film in the original language I sort of feel like I might as well just be watching it in English.
For Baahubali 1 and 2 I can see Netflix has the other "original" version that isn't Telugu, but why are all the Telugu versions stripped of the original dub even when including multiple other voice tracks?
(I did manage to find Baahubali 2 in Telugu through "other means" but I can't find 1 or RRR in Telugu in a quality I'm happy to watch. Recently, I made a post where I coined 75+ pure Telugu neologisms as a way to preserve the language and also try to modernize it without becoming reliant on Samskrutam.
However, I recognize that solely using that approach will be futile. That post can only gain so much traction and be viewed by so many people. And, even if a lot of people see it, how many are willing to take the time to incorporate the new words into their lexicons? Probably only a small fraction.
However, recently I saw this movie and got an idea. Not to spoil it too much, but the protagonist lives in a very rural village. So to accurately depict the villager’s speech, they(including the protagonist) were made to speak in a pure rustic version of Telugu. Some Sanskrit loanwords were used but not much.
For instance, at one point in the movie, to say “government”, the main character said ఏలుబడి(Pure Telugu) instead of ప్రభుత్వం(Sanskrit loanword) or సర్కారు(Persian loanword), which are more common in other movies. So what if there was some way to subsidize movie directors to incorporate more జానుతెలుఁగు words into their movies?
