what to do with 4.0 gpa from top school?

2024.05.16 05:03 supplies4 what to do with 4.0 gpa from top school?

i just finished my sophomore year at a top non-ivy school and have a 4.0 gpa while majoring in economics and poli-sci. I've had some interesting finance experiences and am working at a big firm this sophomore summer in a client facing role but am curious how to take advantage of my GPA since it is probably my strongest point right now. not sure if ppl have any suggestions for scholarships, programs, careers, etc. it seems like the only thing a good gpa (to the extent of a 4.0) matters for is grad school so idk if i should apply to a top program and just get in on my resume. curious to hear people's thoughts. to me, i feel like i worked really hard for no real reason.

2024.05.16 04:42 Comfortable-Hand-680 One move helped me to fulfill my dream of MIT, and I will do my best to apply to MIT 25FALL!

I am a domestic high school graduate who has already taken the college entrance examination (Gaokao-China), majoring in the sciences, with a keen interest in computer science and mathematics. I'm the first generation of university students in my family, and we are not financially affluent. I don't have a green card, and I'm also Deaf and a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
During my time in high school, I maintained an average score of 95. In language proficiency exams, I scored 71 on the TOEFL, with sub-scores of 28 in reading, 22 in writing, 15 in listening, and 6 in speaking (I couldn't exempt from the speaking and listening exams, but I will explain this situation during the application process). I plan to take the SAT exam in June and a special TOEFL exam in August.
Regarding my major in computer science and mathematics, I'm considering switching to a different field such as linguistics, education, or psychology.
Honors:
Excellent Award in the National Writing Competition (30 out of 5000 participants)
Third Prize in the Jiangsu Province Disability Programming Competition (3 out of 800 participants)
Second Prize in the City High School Mathematics Competition (2 out of 480 participants)
School Scholarship Recipient (1 out of 50)
Third Prize in the 10th City "Chinese Dream" High School Talent Competition (3 out of 1900 participants)
List of Activities:
Developer of a sign language translation app (with over 1 million users)
Project leader (designing assistive technologies for the blind and Deaf using Python and C++)
Organizer of Pride Parade (established the DEAF Rainbow Club)
Founder of a studio
Theater director (collaborating with United Deaf & Hearing Artists to promote inclusive narratives in multilingual collaborative theaters)
Assistant at a family farm
Family caregiver
Chief designer
Math tutor
Deaf sign language dance troupe
ESSAY My object is an old-fashioned computer, and this objects is a table, then this table is my desk (app development) and the table where I cook for my family (family responsibilities + low-income).
The purpose of the first paragraph is to set up a scene, the old computer and the cooking bring out that I have family responsibility, and life is not easy.
In the second paragraph, recall how I got along with the old-fashioned computer - for example when I was a child and could still hear, you used the computer to play games; gradually grew up, I began to dislike the computer is too slow, too old, not advanced enough hearing assistance
The third paragraph, the twist - write how I learned programming and English on my own through this old computer and used this old computer to create new opportunities for myself
Fourth paragraph, fifth paragraph - describes two qualities
To wrap up the text, this is a metaphor for how I will always be mindful of where I am from, and always be aware of the deaf, LGBTQ, and low-income communities
I don't know much about deafness, I seem to have some differences in my hearing, and I often misinterpret people's words. I felt the impact of deafness as if the world had lost its colour in silence. In conversation, I grew to rely on spoken words, and the lack of hearing made understanding more and more difficult. My friends' conversations drifted away as if they lived in a world beyond my reach.
But I will never forget the old computer I grew up with (meaning I will never forget where I came from and will always think for people like myself)
  1. socially, my world is quiet - I want to understand the world in silent mode
    1. in my family life, my world is full of burdens -- I have to take care of my parents while fulfilling my life goals.
  2. academically, my world is lacking in resources -- as a deaf person, I can't go to university to study my favorite computer subject like a normal person.
Can provide some general direction on the advice, although you guys pointed out to provide feedback, I essay also have no idea (my thinking counts as a particularly simple question) specifically which question needs to be changed, I conceive of the outline of ideas.
Do you have any advice on my general situation in terms of school districts and strategies for choosing schools. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact me privately. Thank you.

2024.05.16 04:33 lapsuei What school should I choose for my undergrad?

Hello! I am a hs senior from outside the US currently deciding between two schools for a BArch, and am not sure what direction to go. I have been offered admission to Pratt Institute with a 20k per year scholarship and RISD with no financial aid. I am completely torn between the two and am having a hard time deciding what program would better for me. I only have a few days to decide so any input into my situation would be appreciated! ps If this looks familiar I’ve already posted this on another tag, i’m looking for lots of input!

I am currently a high school teacher looking to go back to law school part time and online. I am hoping to earn a high enough LSAT score to get scholarship money to attend. I have an undergrad GPA of 3.1 from a UC that worries me (graduated in 2016). But I also have a 3.9 GPA from my Masters program. What do you think? Will my GPA hurt be that badly?

2024.05.16 04:15 Hairy_Grand5252 Travel advisor agreement

Hi all, I've searched the group and can't find an answer to my question. I see several posts about services to have agreements/contracts signed like HoneyBook and Tern etc. But where did you get the exact wording for the agreement/contract? Do those programs provide a travel advisor contract template? Thanks for helping a super newbie.

2024.05.16 04:05 Old_Major6773 Lack of Supervisory Support?

I'm currently rounding up my masters with a focus on men's mental health. I didn't get in to the program I was hoping to for the fall, and had decided to maybe stick around in my current lab and conduct a new study. However, I have run in to some problems. 1) My supervisor isn't supporting any funding opportunities for me anymore and won't even help me find scholarships and grants. 2) the only project my supervisor is willing to support are related to women's and children's mental health, and not men's mental health (I don't know why), and that too, she isn't very interested in having me do them, its more like a "yea, sure, if you want". Don't get me wrong, I believe those are important concepts for further research in so many ways, but my interests just don't lie there, so I feel myself slowly losing interest in my studies and in grad school. Even tried asking if I could use the angle of looking at how men's mental health impacts women in heterosexual intimate relationships, but she was not too keen to support that. I can't seem to find many labs related to my interests that are willing to take on RA's, so I'm not sure where to get proper research support from. Wondered if this seems like a concern and I should try leave the lab as soon as ending my masters, or if I should suck it up and pursue whatever opportunity I get just to keep a position (even without funding) and have something to do? I also don't know if I'm being overly dramatic and this is just how some supervisor-student relations are, with a lack of common interests and a more fend-for-yourself mentality? I had also asked for her advice/help when prepping to apply for my next program, but she showed no interest in being there for me, and just asked me to give her a 48hr notice on recommendations forms. which I understand, since it isn't her responsibility. However, in the field of research, I would hope that a supervisor would act as my mentor and would assist in guiding me in the right directions? I don't know anymore!

2024.05.16 03:59 marrowsucker Asking for more merit aid as a current student?

I’m currently enrolled and going into my junior year at a private university. When I was accepted, I was offered a merit scholarship that covers half of tuition, and I didn’t try to negotiate for more money because for some reason I thought it wouldn’t work. (I think I read it somewhere that they wouldn’t negotiate or something, I have no idea.) Anyway, I know some of my friends negotiated and did successfully get more money.
I was the valedictorian of my high school, and have also maintained a perfect GPA in the honors program at this university with a computer science major and writing minor, and am involved in student life and leadership here. I want to ask for more merit aid because my family’s financial situation is changing this coming year (but not in a way that will qualify for need-based aid).
How do I ask? I know I could put in applications at other universities just to use as leverage, but I don’t know if that would be dishonest because I don’t plan to transfer regardless. But I know there is a higher merit aid tier that covers 3/4 of tuition, and I want to make a case that I should get that aid because of my top performance so far.
Is it too late to try to get more merit aid? Would I need to show competing offers to have any real cards in my hand? Thanks for any help.

2024.05.16 03:29 TaskAffectionate6316 Trello Alternatives?

Hi all,
I'm searching for a new tool to use now that Trello is ramping up costs and limits on workspaces/users. I've tried a few online but would love recommendations.
The use case: Providing my clients with a list of all deliverables required for their service to be completed using a Kanban or Scrum approach that defines each task with its due date, priority, responsible party, blocked by, attachments, comments etc.
It should be as accessible as possible as the clients tend to not be tech savvy so if the info is not visibility in 1-2 clicks it wont be actioned by them.
I want to be able to create a master template and apply it to each client project, each client project should be isolated from the others so there can be no access to a project the client doesn't have.
The client needs to be able to reply and update their assigned items.
The layout should look something like this.
Backlog - In progress client - In progress Company - Done
Bonus points:
If it has milestones, Gantt capabilities( that easily show dependencies!), the ability to share a filtered view to various stakeholders that updates in Realtime. Alternatively if it can feed easily into a Gantt program
Bonus bonus: If it integrates with Jira/slack/confluence

2024.05.16 03:11 StatisticianFeisty28 How can I do better in my life?

F19 Hello! Lately I’ve been stressed out about my future and I feel like I’d feel better if I just talked about it.
I come from an upper middle class family in the USA. Since Middle School my parents have asked me about College and every conversation ended in me crying because the topic was “too serious” and “I had time to think anyway.” I was always a good student though. Throughout high school I was even able to qualify for a scholarship that pays for 75% of my college, and since my HS was partnered with the Community College in the area, I graduated HS with most of my AA.
After graduating HS at 18, I finished my AA (Magna Cum Laude) online from home with the same college. I’m planning on transferring to another Uni for my Bachelor’s…
Here’s the problem: I don’t know how to drive still and have never worked a day in my life. Now that I’m on break, I bed rot most of the day until my parents come home from work… I’m scared of responsibility. I wasn’t given many chores growing up. I feel like I had life too easy as a kid and now I have to grow up and I can’t. I don’t know how to cook. I’m intelligent as crap but I lack independence… Here is how life is currently:
Work: I have a tiktok page (21k) and make $50 a day for two hour streams but I can’t depend on that for a stable income.. I applied for a supermarket summer job. They haven’t answered yet. My parents would have to take me until I have driving down. I just need in-person experience.
School: I signed up for the Uni’s online bachelor program a day late so I don’t know if they’ll accept me! I’m going for advertising but no major jumps out to me.. I have no career dreams. Idk what i’m studying for but at least it’s free.
Friends/Relationships: my friends all live far and make plans without me because of distance. My friendships are all online. As far as love goes, I’m decently pretty and lots of guys from Tiktok flirt with me but they’re all older (my content is based around old-school music and the kicker is that I’m a younger woman…so when I DJ, dudes send gifts). I’ve depended on the fantasy that I could “marry rich” and now that I’ve been able to network in the industry it becomes less far fetched? For now I’ve been dating a boy from Mexico (M20) for two months and he said he’d take care of me financially.. he doesn’t want me to work which is perfect for me!! I just feel like it’s easier said than done. It’s an LDR, one of us would have to move, citizenship is an issue in itself, and my parents have never known about my relationships which hurts because i’m big on family and I feel like I’m hiding. They’ve given me everything and they’re all I’ve known. In all of this I don’t want to say they’ve failed me, I’m just immature and don’t know how to change which sucks cuz I want to.
Driving: how do people trust high speed machinery? My dad tries to teach me but I cry every time. I need to get out there though. Everyone my age is an hour away. If I want to enjoy my youth, I’ve gotta grow up and be responsible.
Thank you for listening! Maybe someone with similar experiences can give some advice!

2024.05.16 02:55 Shot-Cockroach1047 AITAH for not paying for my daughter's college after she and her father picked her school.

Long post alert... I am not a US citizen neither is my daughter nor do I live in the US instead I live and work in a small island in the Caribbean. My daughter's father however is a white American who lives in the US he is 20 years older than me. After a brief relationship which ended because i thought that I was drugged by him... I found out that I was pregnant as a result of that incident. When I told that I was pregnant I had already ended our relationship but he was ready... he suggested that I leave my job ( I was a teacher) because he had already gotten me another teaching job at an international school in the DR, an apartment and I could drive one of his cars. We could just rekindle our relationship and be a family because we were soul-mates. I was 26 at the time and I preferred to be with my family while having my first baby and I had no interest in getting back together with him. He didn't like my answer so I had my baby with no support at all from him... I didn't mind because I had a lot of support from my friends and family. My beautiful daughter was 3 months old before he knew she was born then visited equipped with a DNA test to see if she was his... he had never seen her. I'm a black woman... by daughter was born looking white with blonde hair and Grey eyes. After doing the test he told me that he didn't need to see her again... I could just leave her at home and come visit him alone. When I refused he left the country. My daughter would see him only two other times in her life until she turned 19. Once when she was 3 ( he stayed less than 24hr because I wouldn't sleep with him) and when she was 12 we visited the US. Our trip was planned for a week in Florida... he arrived 2 days late and left 2 days early... they spent one day together. Through out her life he made no interest in trying to connect with her, just me. When I got married (she was 6) he didn't communicate with her for 3 years. I never stopped him from talking to her. We traveled a lot and he would tell her that he would come see her and not. He didn't send money or clothes... he told me that he didn't have to because I'm rich and if he did all I would do is buy more shoes. My daughter had a great life in spite of his absence. My brothers and father were her dad, my husband became her father and he couldn't love her more ( she calls him daddy, her choice). She went to the best schools and excelled in her studies so much so that she won a national scholarship. However this scholarship pays for her to study at any school in the Caribbean... only partial coverage if she studies outside of the Caribbean. As soon as she turned 18 (no more mandatory child support even though he paid none at all) he started messaging her promising her the world. He promised to pay for her college tuition, give her one of his many apartments, a car and spending money. He told her that I was a gold digger and he didn't send money for her because I would spend it all and he didn't visit because I wasn't nice to him. He told her that she was over 18 so now I can't stop her from visiting him( I never stopped her once). So in the middle of studying for the SATs she left, I felt so betrayed. I told her that she shouldn't go... that it was a bad time... she went anyway. We had a huge arguements before she left... she blamed me for her father not being around, said that I was making it about me and that I was holding her back, if I stopped her she would never forgive me. She went, they picked a school made their plans and upon her return she scored poorly in the SATs. A few months later she left my home and moved to the US to her new school with her new family. Before she left I told her that I couldn't afford to help her... the exchange rate is close to $7 to 1USD so it would be difficult for me to pay if her father stopped supporting her. She didn't listen. She had to pay $8000 in tuition and housing, her school also gave her a scholarship. Instead of paying it all as he promised her father split the payment up into monthly payments two thousand per month. He paid the first and second month by the third month he refused to pay. He started to complain that I should be paying half. He was very late with the third payment. The last payment is past due and he suddenly left the country refusing to pay. She has exams and will not get her results, her enrollment is suspended unless the last payment is made. My daughter is crying and demanding that I make the last payment because her father won't. She has been in the school for 4 months, it's a 4 year program. He has bailout out this soon! I can't afford to pay for her.... I also warned her that this would happen. My daughter has been working her butt off... she has a school job and scores in the 90s and high 80s in all her classes. AITAH if I don't pay? Ooh the scholarship from my country will cover $3000 of the $8000 that she has to pay, it just takes about a year for the money to be paid.

I'm applying to junioassociate/level 1 SWE roles so its not like i'm competing with people with 10 YEO. are ex-faang, ex-jane street people really applying to these kinds of places? because who else could those "other candidates" be?

2024.05.16 02:12 sheriffderek Massive Skill Gap: Are Coding Bootcamps and New Developers Missing the Mark? A recent chat with DonTheDeveloper.

A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to one of Don’s rants and I went through and commented on each of the points. I can't find that post, but I had copied it over here: https://www.reddit.com/perpetualeducation/comments/1c7k9re/donthedeveloper_on_a_rant_about_how_aspiring/
We had a chat about it. Here’s the video/podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHmqZkC3LqU&lc
Don titled it: There's a MASSIVE Skill Gap Among New Developers
I'll attempt to write a bit about that - (even though we went over many other topics - and I'm having a hard time grouping them)
It’s easy to simplify this into “the market” or “the boot camp” or “the tech stack” or "what's fair" or "the resume" - but I think people are missing the various multidimensional aspects at play. Is it:
Is it all of those things - and more? (Yes). And it's "the student" too." We're all different (cue reading rainbow moment). But it's true. Some of us are slower. Some of us are faster but miss the details. Some of us have a background that alignes neatly with tech. Some of us already know what job we want and why - and other people just want to make a good bet on a stable career. No matter what zone you're in, we still have to face the music - and deal with (trigger alert) - the truth.
The market is real. Companies aren't aggressively hireing random barely capable developers right now (like they have in the past). They're scared and holding on to their money. They also kinda realized they were spending more money on middle management and probably developers too - and are going to need some time to figure out how to make profitable businesses (or how to keep getting more VC funding to burn through).
But if there's a huge gap between your skills/experience and what it takes to do the job you're applying for, none of the other factors matter.
Many people choose a coding boot camp based on superficial factors like the price, the timeline, the website design, and the sales pitch. They often don't consider other important aspects because they simply don't know better. This isn’t unlike any other product or service or school.
Some people pick out a boot camp and learn a bunch of awesome stuff and they go out there and start a new career and for some reason, they don’t come back to Reddit to tell us about it. There are some legit colleges and boot camps and other alternative learning paths out there - that are really great. It's just a fact.
If you read the bootcamp marketing, paid your tuition, went through the steps they lined out, and came out the other end unable to get that job they promised you, well - that’s awkward. Maybe for you, it’s that simple. If you feel like you got a raw deal, I’m sorry. There are some businesses that should be ashamed of themselves - but they won't be. All you can do is warn other people. That’s over now. We can only work with the present.
For people who really want to work in this industry - they'll keep moving forward: at the end of the day, this is the playing field. So, if you want to get off the bench, we’re going to have to design a path to that – and you might need to rethink some of your assumptions.
It could certainly be said that new developers are now expected to know about–and have experience with–a lot more things.
Are the expectations that someone brand new to development is going to be able to get a job unreasonable? Well, does it matter what someone’s opinion about that is? You either want the job - or you don’t. And you need to know how to do the job, or no one will hire you. Do you need to know everything on this huge list to get an entry level position https://roadmap.sh/javascript ? (no) (in fact - close that - and don’t ever look at it again)
When I started (at the age of ~30) (in ~2011), you needed to know HTML, CSS, (Probably some PhotoShop to get your assets), maybe a little PHP (and likely HTTP and more about URLs and request types and forms), FTP and DNS to get your site hosted, and maybe some JavaScript. You might have used jQuery to help out or Knockout.js. And you had to know how to hook up a database and MySQL and probably a CMS or some sort. And maybe your code was a mess or maybe it adhered to some common patterns. But that was life. Not everyone needed to know all those things. Some people would focus more on getting the mockup into the HTML and CSS. Other people might focus on the server and the PHP or Perl or Java. There were all sorts of jobs and some of them were done by people with a formal education in Computer Science studies and other people just figured it out as needed. There was a lot of work to be done. Lots of custom stuff to build and maintain. And it was just normal to learn more incrementally as the years went by. You could totally get a job knowing just HTML and CSS (and you still can BTW). There was still an infinite amount of things you could know. But it seemed to ramp up naturally because we were closer to the grain of The Web.
So, what do people learn now? (Generally) They rush through some HTML and CSS really quick (which actually teaches them more bad habits than good). They rarely learn about DNS or FTP because a tutorial showed them how to type a few random things into a terminal to have their site on a free service and they don’t buy a domain name because there’s a free subdomain. Apparently paying for anything is for suckers and companies that don't give you things for free are evil capitalistic pigs who should be shut down. New devs don’t know much about servers because their text editor is actually running an advanced web application behind the scenes that starts a virtual server and runs all sorts of other things they don’t understand outside of that context - like connecting to version control, opening a terminal pane, SSH, code completion and typeahead, autoimport completion, AI suggestions and other additional layers like typescript and many other linters to tell them where all their errors are. If they couldn't use VSCode - they might be dead in the water. It can feel like you’re just a bag of meat being yelled at by VSCode as you try and solve the errors and remove all the red lines. And we do all of these - to put the training wheels in place.
And I’m not saying that a LAMP stack doesn’t have it’s own level of black-box and mysteries with how Apache handles your HTTP requests and MySQL starts up it’s own server - but we have to be comfortable with some level of abstraction or we’d be writing all ones and zeros at the machine code level.
So, the new developer is manning this huge stack of tools unknowingly, but they do get a lot of benefits. We can spin up a pretty complex web application with a front-end to make requests, a server to talk to a database and other third-party systems and respond back to the client/front-end, and an auth layer to make sure people are properly signing in and only seeing what they need to see. There are abstractions for HTML and CSS and JS that put that template logic and controller logic into a neat little component file (which is great) and that component file is properly registered based on file name conventions and everything gets set up in this larger system of conventions that all happen behind the scenes in the framework architecture. So, as a new developer - you can really ride the framework and know hardly anything about how it works - as long as you know the language to speak to this layer of the abstraction (the API).
These aren't just arbitrary add-ons that people made to complicate things. They solve real-world problems. The new dev won't really understand what they are - but I'm not saying we should just get rid of them. They allow us to move faster and to build interfaces and business logic without having to write tons of behind the scenes repeated structural code by hand. And with those training wheels, we have more time on our hands. We can also add in the chance to further define our programs with safety measures and plan automated testing routines, and built-in documentation of our code base. We can keep adding layers and layers or pull in more and more third-party tools. It’s pretty amazing. But what people end up learning is how to maintain that configuration - and there’s only so much time - and so, they end up learning 10% of all the things you used to need/want to know. And some jobs have a path for that. But there's likely going to be a long-term cost for you.
Arguably - it doesn’t matter how much “code” you know - and making things is what matters. And that’s true. That’s what matters to the business that pays you. And to the school that wants you to feel good about your progress. But I think you should protect your learning journey. It’s for you. It’s going to be what you carry on throughout the years and it’s a seed.
Getting proficient with a popular tech stack - when the market is booming proved to be a great decision for boot camps and their students. And I'd bet that the majority of people mean well.
But when it's not booming, students are in it for the wrong reasons, schools have tightened up and moved online, the market has plenty of devs who already have 5+ years working with that framework/stack -- then all of the sudden - the surface-level fake-it-till-you-make-it path (as much as I respect that) doesn't work as well. You're going to have to put in some more energy.
When it's obvious that you can't build an HTML page with semantic markup, that's accessible, and has a universally pleasurable experience, and you can't write CSS without a UI framework or do anything custom, it's obvious. You should be aware of that gap. When you've never owned a domain name or setup a deployment pipeline, you should be aware of that gap. When your personal website looks like your boot camp gave it to you, you should be aware of how that looks. When you can't take a server-side scripting language like Python or Go or PHP and build out a little personal website framework - you should be aware of that gap. When you can't plan a project and don't have experience with diagrams and explaining things, you need to be aware of that gap. When you've never written about your process or created any case-studies to explain your projects, you should be aware of that gap. When you're only proof of work is the class assignments, you should be aware of that gap. When your github history goes dead after the last day of class, you should be aware that we'll see that. When you claim to no nothing about visual design and that's for someone else on the team - you should be aware of that gap. If you refuse to turn on your camera and just want to be left alone, you should be aware of that huge gap. If you can't build a little prototype app without React, they you probably don't JavaScript, and you should be aware of that gap. And there will ALWAYS be a gap. There's always more to learn. So - it's an important skill to know what to learn and why - and when. You can't learn everything. And if you're having a hard time finding work right now, then get clear on your goal. Stop applying for general "Software engineer" jobs you aren't ready for. Narrow your scope. Figure out a job that you think you can do confidently. Get clear on how big your gap is and what you need to learn to get centered and confident with your toolset. Ideally, it's fun. Try and ignore all the doom and gloom and focus on your own personal goal.
It's not just the market. Too many people are applying for jobs they aren't anywhere near qualified to do. And it probably doesn't feel good. But luckily - you can learn the things and get back on track.

2024.05.16 02:02 thingswillgetbettter Living with strict parents over the summer

I'm 20 years old in college home for the summer, and I live with my incredibly strict parents. I don't know what to do. What's worse is that none of my friends understand, and I'm hoping someone on here relates at least a little so I don't feel completely alone.
I have first-gen, incredibly strict Indian parents. My high school experience with them was awful. Think of all the cliches--needed to be the best academically (ended up being valedictorian of my school and getting a full tuition scholarship), no freedom at all (curfew was 8pm, no leaving the house more than 2x a week even if it was a club, they didn't think clubs or extracurriculars were important), no driving (even though I got my license at 17), physical and mental abuse, threats, etc etc. To make matters worse, I ended up losing all my friends my senior year. The only person that stuck with me was my boyfriend (secret, of course), and we're still together (4 years now).
College was the best experience for me. I made all new friends (except they all live 2+ hours away from my home sadly) and my bf and I are making long distance work. Coming home last summer was fine because I was only there for a month because I got accepted to this research program which I begged them to let me go to, and they did.
This summer, it has only been 1.5 weeks and I'm losing it. My bf just came back and I always make an excuse to see him, that I'm seeing my old "friends" and they don't question it too much but my curfew is still 9 PM. I came home last night at 9:35 PM and I got yelled at, slapped twice, and screamed at about how I have been spending too much money. I literally worked 2 jobs in college last year and have a virtual summer internship. This is MY money. I'm still not allowed to drive, despite having had my license for 3 years now. When I am allowed to drive, it's only like 3 select locations (all no highway) and I have to use our small, crappy car. I need to do shadowing this summer because I'm a pre-dental student, but I'm not allowed to literally drive to do my shadowing hours. My mom takes the small car to work (she refuses to drive anything else) and my dad works from home so we have the big car completely free but I'm just not allowed to drive it at all.
These are just the recent things but there's so many things that I can't do. I've missed out on trips with my friends, concerts with them, etc. My friends (like a group of 15 people are going) recently invited me to this concert in one of my friend's hometowns 2 hours away and offered me a place to sleep but ofc I can't go! I even tried asking and reasoned out how I would get there via public transit and I just got laughed at. It's all my money, too.
The worst part is, even though I've had the best college experience (because they go to bed at 9-10 PM they don't check my location that late, so I've been able to party and finally have that taste of a normal life) and met the most amazing people, none of them can understand this at all. Most of my friends are Indian/Asian and I know a lot of people but everyone I'm close to just doesn't have this problem. I feel bad ranting to them because they don't know what to say or do. Even when they do try, it's things like "try to sneak out" (cameras, motion detectors, etc) or "better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission" like they don't fundamentally understand how bad it could get if I did that.
I don't know what to do. I can't get a job because first of all, even though they complain about money to me all the time, they wouldn't let me get a job because it's too much freedom and driving. Secondly, I'm studying for the DAT (Dental Admission Test) this summer and I can barely even concentrate at home because the second it turns 3 PM the TV starts blasting and they're always yelling at each other. I tried to ask if I can go to the library to study and focus, but again they yelled at me about the car thing and then how it would be a waste of gas money and how I can study at home and how I should be waking up at 6-7 AM to study if the house gets loud around 3 PM.
I hope someone on here can understand, even partly, my frustration. I feel so isolated and alone right now. It makes me so angry that my parents have fucked me up as a person so much and just as I was starting to cope with it, I have to deal with all their BS again.
Can anyone relate? Or is there any advice anyone has that has gone through something similar?

2024.05.16 01:52 Anonymous_9494 UCD MSBA vs UTD MSBA?

Hey yes,I got admits for MSBA program from UC Davis at 10% scholarship( $54k in tuition fees) and UTD MSBA Flex at 50% scholarship (upto $22k/year).
Im confused which one to go with as UCD is ideal because of its prime location in San Francisco( Silicon valley) and practicum program where you've to solve real problem in a company while attending school. Plus the average starting salary is $131k with a $19k sign in bonus as per their website where as the cons are no campus life (because the original Davis campus is one hour away)
UCD is a 1 year programs while UTD is a flex program allowing to complete degree on your pace.
Please help. Thanks

2024.05.16 01:50 CRISPRCas13d Where is a good place to discuss biomedical PhD applications for this next cycle (Fall 2025 start date)

Hi,
So I know it’s early, but I wanted to get an idea of where active communities are for biomedical, biosciences, genetics, bioengineering/BME etc PhD-applying people!
2 more questions:
1) do you have any suggestions for what I should start doing now to prepare for when applications open in August or September?
2) in general, is it relevant to mention your personal background when applying to PhD (e.g. I grew up poor in the rural South, I’m a URM, mental illness in the family, single parent household because dad was deported, etc so I overcame great difficulties to get a full ride scholarship to undergrad). Even now, 4 years after leaving home it of course significantly influences my career trajectory. I hear programs value diversity & maybe mentioning this in a line or two would be okay — what are your thoughts? I think in light of my upbringing, I have achieved tremendous success in undergrad and wonder if it’s worth even giving admissions a whiff of the complexity of all that.
Thanks for your insights 🫶🏻

2024.05.16 01:44 KeyChrono URGENT!! DEPOSIT

Hi Everyone, I'm in quite the pickle since I didn't get my financial aid information from RIT since I don't have my FAFSA completed yet. As of now, all I know is I need to dorm, my SAI definitely is -1500, and I have a scholarship of 25k per year + possible maxed out TAP since I'm low income. I'm not really sure about the cost and loans I need to take out + the amount of money I should earn to pay off potential debts. I heard that there's a co-op program but I doubt if it'll be enough to pay off everything. Does anyone have a rough estimate on how much I would end up paying? Thank you very much. Unfortunately the FAFSA has been very troublesome on my parent's portal

2024.05.16 01:34 musfrommars cornell rawlings vs brown (premed)

hi! i'm currently committed to cornell premed for human development (concentration in gerontology) at the college of human ecology, but i just got off the waitlist at brown and i'm having trouble choosing whether to go or not.
based on the other posts i've seen on here, people seem to recommend brown over cornell pretty unanimously for premed, however i was also given the hunter r. rawlings iii research scholarship at cornell, and i am having trouble weighing the prestige/opportunities that come with that offer compared to a standard experience at brown (which, to my knowledge, does not have an equivalent program). at brown, i would be studying either medical anthropology or public health.
i prefer brown's location, but from students i've talked to, dining and housing are awful (but i think i could get over it). i also think the community at brown seems more welcoming/collaborative, but i assume every ivy comes with a competitive edge, so i'm not too hung up on that.
please send help! thanks so much :)

2024.05.16 01:20 CrochetRunner Where you go to university doesn't really matter in most cases

I see a lot of posts here from students upset about not getting into a given program. As someone who has hired people in the past, and is currently a postdoctoral scholar (I went back to do my PhD after years in the workforce) the vast majority of employers don't care where you went to university. Especially for accredited programs, like engineering, nursing, dietetics, etc. that have an independent body assuring that all programs in that field meet the entry-level competencies for someone in that field.
Business is different, as it's all about connections. But in most cases, where you go to university doesn't really matter. You will all be fine, even if you didn't get into your "dream" university. I always tell the students that I mentor to choose universities based on: 1. which one will give you the biggest scholarship / allow you to save the most money, 2. which one has co-op or internship opportunities so you can get experience in the field before graduating, 3. if you are hoping for a professional program after undergrad that is competitive, go where you feel you can succeed and get the highest average - whether it's medicine, law, OT, PT, SLP, etc. you'll need a good GPA, so go where you feel you can succeed or where there are lots of supports to help students succeed, 4. which university "feels" right for you - where you feel comfortable and where you think you'll be able to succeed.
Seriously, very few employers care where you went to university. They care that you have a degree in a particular field, they care that you have relevant work/volunteer experience, and they care that you've demonstrated you have a good work ethic.
It will all be fine in the end. If you are seriously considering harming yourself due to not getting into your programs of choice, please reach out to your guidance counsellor, to kids help phone, or to other crisis hotlines. You are worth far more than where you were accepted to university.

2024.05.16 01:15 _Gaudeamus_ Need help with exporting textures for unity

I am going absolutely insane over this
So I have a project I need to hand in in two days, and I finished all my textures and models. The only thing left to do is export textures, assign materials/textures, set up and light the scene. I'm texturing everything in substance painter, exporting using the template Unity HD render Pipeline (Metallic Standard) and my Unity project is URP
Now, my issue is the smoothness map. I know there's no smoothness maps in URP, and when I browsed the forums I found out that I need to save my smoothness map in the alpha channel of my Metallic/Roughness map (I'm assuming that this is my problem) but I have no clue how to do that. I guess the model looks fine without the smoothness but I need it for some of the shiny gore/blood in my scene
This might be more of a substance painter question but I'm open to suggestions on how to fix this
Btw I'm a student and I'm still getting used to these programs so if I say/do something stupid be nice to me pls :,)
