2024.05.05 16:41 livefree27 3-day Itinerary Review for Wife's 30th - Staying in CBD
Heading to New Orleans for a 3-day trip with my wife, 15-month old daughter, and mother-in-law. I've been many times, but this is my wife's first. She specifically requested the aquarium and botanical garden. Can you all help tweak the rest of our plan? Staying in CBD. Mother-in-law taking care of our daughter at night, but need to keep them in mind during the day.
Day 1 Lunch at Gumbo Shop - any better place in CBD you recommend for a quick lunch focused on gumbo? Aquarium Peche for dinner
Day 2 Bearcat for brunch Oysters at Felix's beignets at Cafe du Monde Roll back to the hotel for a nap Dinner at Cochon Wife and I head out to Carousel Bar and walk Bourbon Street
Day 3 Botanical Garden in the morning Mandina's for lunch Undecided for dinner Stroll Frenchmen Street with the wife
Any tweaks/activities you all recommend? Not too set on Bourbon Street, but figured I needed to show her since it's her first time. My wife isn't a huge drinker. She loves quaint settings and desserts. Also looking for a great place to just casually stroll in for some jazz.
Looking for a dinner recommendation for Day 3. Cajun/seafood for no more than $75 a person ideally. Doesn't need to be in CBD, but no more than a 15 minute drive.

. Pashinyan about the Academic City, peace, and emigration
QUESTION: If the Academic City project removes universities from provinces, it will lead to a more passive life for provincial youth. Also, what is the state doing to reduce emigration?
PASHINYAN: We've discussed different causes of emigration but we never talk about one of the biggest socio-psychological promoters of emigration: war and conflict. The peace agenda aims to reduce emigration. Many families have left Armenia or taken their sons out of Armenia to avoid army service because of a lack of peace. Everyone knows this is happening but it's not being discussed. We need to publicly discuss the impact of conflict in particular because there appears to be emigration regardless of whether the economy is doing good or bad, whether there is law and order or not. This topic needs a more thorough analysis.
As for the Academic City and provinces, we DO want the youth to leave their nests. That is crucial for their development as a human. At some point, the person must leave their usual environment and live in a different environment. It reinforces you and raises your competitiveness. Attend a kindergarten in your village, a school in your village, and a university in your village, and you are not going to have a crucial layer of competitiveness when you end up in a new environment as an adult. We need active youth, but that activity must be stimulated by other means, festivals and business programs, and not necessarily universities. Get a quality education at the Academic City so you'll have the ability to return and help your community with business and governance. We must not artificially attempt to discourage provincial youth from traveling to other parts of the country. Our task must be to provide skills and encourage the student to help their community.
QUESTION: Today a fraction of provincial students return to their communities after moving to Yerevan for education.
PASHINYAN: Today the students are leaving their communities, even without the Academic City. Աշխարհ ա պետք տենալ: They need to receive proper education and skills somewhere, and we must create the conditions for them to apply their knowledge to help their communities with business and governance. Is emigration from provinces a new concept in Armenia? No. It's been happening for decades. Not the presence, but rather a lack of Academic City is one of the reasons behind it. My daughter studies at UWC in Germany. Their students are regularly taken to various communities. We can do the same in Academic City to strengthen the connection with provinces. Gavar [where this meeting is] is near Lake Sevan and has monuments. If you receive quality knowledge and skills you can turn it into a tourism hotspot.
Along with concentrating universities in the Academic City, we plan to strengthen the colleges in provinces. They will become more targeted in terms of meeting the labor market demand. Youth doesn't only hang out in universities. Colleges also create youth activities. We want to strengthen the college infrastructure in provinces and train specialists. Currently, we are assisting in the creation of clubs and cafes, libraries, and other places where the youth likes to hang out, in provinces. We need to get you to start traveling more in Armenia. Make your life more interesting for yourself. That backyard gazebo won't go anywhere; don't spend all your life there.
QUESTION: Should high school students finish their education in schools before applying for college, or should they leave school in 9th grade and continue their education in college?
PASHINYAN: I don't know, I'm not an expert in that, but I view schools, colleges, and universities as part of the same chain that supplement each other and my administration's policy is to develop the institute of college in provinces. There is already a medical college in Martuni. We recently built a medical center in Martuni so you can graduate from college and work at the medical center. You could also study at Yerevan's medical university and work as a doctor in Martuni. We want to create a cycle so you can study, travel, study again if necessary, return and work in your hometown.
QUESTION: Gavar used to have factories during the Soviet Union. Will you restore them?
PASHINYAN: We could build a factory but you also need to know how to sell the product and handle a host of other issues that we'd rather have the private sector handle. The government's job here is to create the conditions for the private sector, for example, by providing a subsidy program to acquire modern factory equipment, or by launching an interstate railway link that would result in many more factories being created in Armenia.
source, Pashinyan visited an open arts and crafts exhibition in Qyavar: VIDEO
source, soldiers expressed regret on Saturday after "joining" opposition protests and roadblocks on Friday; "misunderstanding"
About a dozen or so contractors were seen greeting the protesters near village Kirants on Friday night. The defense ministry launched an investigation. The following day the soldiers released a video expressing regret.
SERVICEMAN (Asatur Chobanyan): My fellow servicemen and I went to village Kirants where we were greeted by several journalists and protesters. It was presented as us joining the protests, but it's all a lie. We went there under the influence of the moment, for which we regret.
SERVICEMAN (Felix Balinyan): I want to clarify we have nothing to do with those protests or politics. Us ending up there was an accident and I regret and I apologize. Don't politicize this. //
Authorities said they are investigating reports of stones thrown at officers and slashed tires. A protester was
recorded using a sharp object to puncture the tire of a vehicle during a road closure participated by an opposition MP.

The driver said he was transporting an important cargo and wasn't happy about the ordeal. The protesters accused him of lying that he was transporting goods and accused him of being sent there to provoke them. The driver opened the van's doors to prove he had a cargo and instead of apologizing to him the protesters rebuked him for not opening it sooner. One protester eventually urged others to calm down and to help replace the tire.

source, source, source, source, source, source, source, source, Armenian government is expecting Russian economic retaliation as early as 2nd half of May: Pro-West NGO chief
REPORTER: Let's discuss the ongoing protests against border delimitation. You stated that Kremlin won't be able to carry out a coup in Armenia. Why do you think this is a coup?
KHURSHUDYAN: It's an attempt to organize a coup. You can see the actors and the puppeteers' ears rising from behind them. We all know who the upper echelon of the church is affiliated with [context: one of the main organizers is a ranking churchman]. We know how they evaded taxes and their schemes involving vehicles; the ex-regime figures ran their schemes through the church. From Garegin B to the Archbishops, they have accumulated wealth, owned supermarkets, and even owned public transport lines in Yerevan until the recent transition to municipal-run service. The church is leading this movement right now because they made the correct calculation that the less often people see Kocharyan and Serj the better their chances of gathering support. However, their miscalculation is with the length of the ears visible behind them. Isn't it Kocharyan's son and Naira Zohrabyan closing the streets of Yerevan today? They are "busing" ARF members from other parts of the country to Tavush. They play on the justified concerns of Tavush villagers.
We know that Russia has allocated large sums to bring Armenia under its control. What they failed to accomplish by causing the 2020 and 2023 cataclysmic events in Nagorno-Karabakh was attempted again by enabling Azerbaijan to attack Armenia proper, but that didn't work and their puppets only won 20% of the vote. Even the attempt to use the refugees to organize a coup didn't work. Russia sees that it's becoming increasingly difficult to use Azerbaijan as a tool against Armenia due to the Western pressure on Azerbaijan, and especially since Armenia has agreed to return the 2.5 Azeri villages totaling less than 3 km
2. So what else is left for Russia to try against Armenia? (1) Economic sanctions. I have received information that Armenian leadership is expecting Russian sanctions starting 2nd half of May. I personally doubt they'll do it because it'll backfire since Armenia exports goods to Russia today [that are in deficit]. (2) The use of 5th column [pro-Russian political forces]. This is why they are attempting to use the church - more or less the only institution that hasn't been fully discredited.
REPORTER: But we've only seen one ranking member of the church during protests. Why do you say the church as an institution is involved in it?
KHURSHUDYAN: There have been public statements by several church figures. There are even discussions about nominating archbishop
Ajapahyan as a candidate for Prime Minister. Serj and Kocharyan are going to use them as a medium to return to power. Today I criticize some of my dear colleagues [presumably for demanding Pashinyan's resignation] and they criticize me for dividing the field into blacks and whites "yet again". My friends, the truth is, the political field is sadly still divided into "blacks and whites" and the ex-regime still maintains control of enough financial and human resources to pose a danger. Whether you like it or not, that's how it is. If you help the church today, you are working for Russia.
REPORTER: (1) What is Russia's end goal? (2) Is the Pashinyan administration in power mainly thanks to the loyalty of police forces?
KHURSHUDYAN: Pashinyan is in power primarily thanks to the position of pro-state forces. There are pro-state figures and parties with influence on the public. It is not "popular" to publicly support the government today, despite the fact that this government - let's be honest - is the main locomotive that's taking us to the EU. Like them or hate them, this government is negotiating the Eurointegration and cooperating with Blinken and the EU. It's not BEVER [publicly anti-Russia] or other pro-West forces doing that today. BEVER claims they have been told that if they gather 10,000 supporters, the U.S. will help them replace the government. That's a new level of silliness. BEVER makes up tales and spreads them. The pro-West forces support the government's Eurointegration process, and also the process of delimitation because it's a process of detaching from Russia. The delimitation takes away Azerbaijan as a weapon in the hands of Russia. Controlling the Azerbaijani threat will make it safer for Armenia to leave CSTO and EAEU tomorrow.

-- OPENING CREDIT SEQUENCE --
Black screen with one quote following another.
Slow pan of the momentary crack of sunshine through the clouds.
A siren heard in the background.
Garbage (an empty pack of chips and packaging), along with other remnants of last night's student societies' activities leave clues of last night.
The impending doom of the Titanic's demise lurks over. Reminiscing of unfulfilled hope and dreams.
A homeless person asleep by the Waitrose.
Shopkeepers and pub owners cleaning the front pavement of their buildings.
"WOKEISM"
-- EXT. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON - DAY --
The noise of a sparsely filled university campus, with looks of hungover students.
An obnoxious laugh from a singular person heard in the distance (in an awkward tone).
The bright morning clouds bounce off the glass of the film department. A couple of film students sitting together, talking about their first day of shooting their first project.
-- INT. EDITING SUITE - DAY --
We see our first film student, ALEX (white, just turned 20, wearing a Pulp Fiction tshirt from Urban Outfitters, has round silver glasses and messy grown out hair) acting very enthusiastically about his choice for who the main actocharacter should be.
ALEX: --Are you kidding?? Mia is the perfect character for our story. She literally thinks that she has a moral high ground because she posts about current events. — or as a way to get more followers. They both go hand in hand.
On the opposite side of the desk is SAM (half-white, half-asian, and he’s wearing a chain that hangs above his black tee), who is looking through his
Sam checks his phone
SAM: Why can't we just make a fun video instead?
ALEX: Don't you want to make important cinema? Something interesting -- that moves people.
ALEX: Ok so what's your plan? Like, what are we actually gonna telling her?
SAM: We can tell her that we're filming her day, . Besides, this would only seem like it's for her benefit -- it's free publicity.
SAM: I know we could be making something else. But I just need to finally show people how insane they can seem when their being these instagram "activists/feminists".
ALEX: Ohh I get it now. Did you check if she actually replied?
-- INT. STUDENT QUARTERS - DAY --
The film crew are outside her front door. Knocking once. She opens the door with a big smile. She's wearing light yet visible makeup, her hair is brushed and she's wearing a matching set of pyjamas.
MIA (holding her hand out for a handshake): Hi! Pleased to meet you!
ALEX & SAM (in unison, as if they practised beforehand): Hey!
MIA (gesturing): Come on in!
Sam and Alex start to document MIA through a voyeuristic lens.
SAM: We just want you to ask as natural as possible. We really like your instagram, so just do your thing.
MIA: Aww! Geez that's really sweet of you to say. Honestly, I never really know if what I'm doing really makes any difference...
ALEX: Trust me -- your work is exactly we were looking for.
-- INT. MIA’S ROOM - DAY --
MIA, phone in hand, updates her followers (134) about how to feel safer on campuses during an instagram live.
MIA (talking to her phone)
"...how are we supposed to feel safe when people are just there for no reason? How are we supposed to know if you're not going to attack me? You are valid if you feel threatened by loiterers.
I'll include a link to a couple campus security hotlines in my bio for you guys to use."
She ends her live video and goes to the bathroom for a break.
ALEX (to SAM): Is the post ready? -- Make sure it's from the fake account so it can't be traced back to us. Ok?
SAM: Yeah Alex, I'm not an idiot.
Sam goes on his phone and hits "Post".
SAM: It's up.
Sam starts sending it to university groupchats and any accounts associated with the university.
-- INT. COMMON ROOM - DAY --
A couple hours pass by. Sam and Alex are filming footage outside at a cafe with Mia.
She quickly jumps up from her seat as she sees notifications flood in – "RIP Tyronne" (20, black, student at Southampton University) and other information spreads, unfolding in tragic posts.
The film crew interrupts Mia's scrolling. Still filming.
Her voice trails off, pausing for a moment of realisation. She feels like this is a perfect opportunity.
MIA: Guys, you should make the film about this. Ask me questions! Interview style! I can try to create a conversation about this. This can turn into something good. Hold on, let me start by posting on my story.
Mia posts "RIP Tyronne. You won't be forgotten."
SAM: "Oh my God... Mia, did you know Tyronne?"
MIA: "Well, no, but I could've..."
-- INT. MIA’S ROOM - MORNING --
We see Mia waking up to immediately check her phone.
MIA (an expression of confusion on her face, trying to wrap her head around what might have happened)
-- EXT. DARK ALLEYWAY - NIGHT (IMAGINED FLASHBACK FROM THE POV OF MIA) --
Tyronne is hanging out and walking around with his group of new friends. He unexpectedly encounters his ex friend, Callum, and his new friends while out.
Tempers flared, a misunderstanding erupted over a suspected theft, and the situation escalated dangerously.
Tyronne and Callum end up in a physical altercation.
Tyronne suffers a stab wound. With little to no detail of how it happened.
In a state of panic, everyone flees the scene. Leaving Tyronne injured and alone.
CUT TO:
-- INT. MIA’S ROOM --
She looks back between her new post: "Protest in town square. Tomorrow! White silence is compliance! Black Lives Matter!" and the comments and likes and the reflection of herself in the mirror.
As the narrative takes on a life of its own, it distorts with each share and repost. Mia's intention to shed light on injustice begins to waver under the weight of her growing social influence.
A look in her eyes changes when she goes from looking sad about Tyronne's story to trying to perfect her self image.
MIA (looking in her reflection): Who should I have to thank? Tyronne... or Callum?
-- EXT. TOWN HALL - DUSK --
A swelling crowd, Mia on the podium, microphone in hand, her voice louder, more forceful than ever.
She becomes a beacon for the online community's unrest. Mia, propelled by a mix of dedication and white saviourism, finds herself amidst a sea of voices, each clamoring to be heard.
-- EXT. TOWN HALL - NIGHT --
Rage and anger intensifies through the town hall. The night’s sky darkens the crowd and its atmosphere. To which people begin to use fireworks. Cheers turn to screams. The figure crumples in the distance – a protest turns into chaos. An innocent bystander is injured.
-- INT. FILM CREW HIDEOUT - NIGHT --
The crew, faces shadowed with doubt, question the moral fabric of their "documentary".
ALEX: I can't believe this actually happened. What have we done?
SAM: What if someone finds out?
ALEX: What?
SAM: What if someone finds out the post came from us? Our career is over before it even started.
ALEX: How are you even thinking of that right now? I don't know what to do. I just know this can't go anywhere. We need to get rid of any evidence.
SAM: Let me check up on Felix.
-- CUT TO:
-- EXT. TESCO'S (SHOP) - DAY --
Mia is devistated by the news and in hopes to keep her spirits up, she walks in to the store to grab a treat.
Reaching for caramelized almonds, a man with a hoodie and a big packpack takes up the majority of the aisle and bumps in to her.
Annoyed by this (as if it's her last straw), she turns to him and looks up as he rushes away.
MIA: Wow. Excuse you??
FELIX: (turns around and looks up) Calm down.
MIA: What did you just? -- Tyronne???
Mia shocked by what she sees, cannot complete her sentence. Dropping the bag from her hands.
Felix panics and scurries off before she can process anything.
-- EXT. MIA’S WINDOW - NIGHT --
AS MIA STOOD BY THE WINDOW, THE GLOW FROM HER PHONE CAST LIGHT UPON HER CONTEMPLATIVE FACE, ILLUMINATING A DISCONNECT FROM THE DIGITAL PERSONA SHE PRESENTED TO THE WORLD. IN THIS MOMENT OF STARK INTROSPECTION, SHE CONFRONTED A PROFOUND UNCERTAINTY THAT HAD TAKEN ROOT WITHIN HER—WAS HER ACTIVISM A TRUE FACET OF HER IDENTITY, OR MERELY A CONTRIVED PERFORMANCE, AN ECHO OF AUTHENTICITY RATHER THAN ITS EMBODIMENT? THE SHOCK OF THIS REALISATION MINGLED WITH CONFUSION, STIRRING A DEEPER QUESTIONING THAT RESONATED BEYOND HER OWN EXPERIENCE. IT WAS THE VERY QUESTION THAT PERHAPS WE ALL SHOULD BE ASKING OURSELVES: IN OUR PURSUIT OF WHAT WE BELIEVE IS RIGHT, HAVE WE REMAINED TRUE TO OUR CAUSE, OR HAVE WE STRAYED INTO THE PERFORMATIVE? MIA'S INTROSPECTION LAYS BARE THE VULNERABILITY OF OUR CONVICTIONS, CHALLENGING US TO SCRUTINISE THE FOUNDATIONS OF OUR ACTIONS AND THE VERACITY OF OUR ENGAGEMENTS IN THE COMPLEX THEATRE OF SOCIAL ACTIVISM.
-- THE END. --

Tolomato Cemetery Tour
- Located on the site of an early 18th-century Franciscan Indian mission to the native Guale people, this Catholic cemetery dates back to St. Augustine's early history. Public access to the Tolomato Cemetery is limited, due to preservation concerns, to the third Saturday of each month, when guided tours are given from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- The Tolomato Cemetery was the final resting place for people from a wide variety of cultures - Spanish, Cuban, Greek, Menorcan, African, Irish, and Haitian, just to name a few. It was closed to burials in 1884.
- The Tolomato Cemetery served as the parish cemetery for what is now the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine for more than 100 years. Though some 1,000 St. Augustinians are buried in the cemetery, there are only about 100 grave markers. What is known about who is buried there comes from the parish death records. The Cathedral parish and the Diocese of St. Augustine still own, maintain, and protect the cemetery.
- Some of the historically important people buried in the Tolomato cemetery are Bishop Agustin Verot, the first Bishop of St. Augustine, Governor Enrique White, who served during the Second Spanish Period, and General George Biassou of Haiti. Also buried here are the first Sisters of St. Joseph and Civil War soldiers from both sides of the conflict, including Freedmen who fought for the Union.
- Father Felix Varela of Cuba, who as a renowned teacher at the Cathedral of Havana seminary was an outspoken defender of human rights, and who later published the first Spanish-language newspaper in the U.S., was buried at Tolomato in 1853. The distinctive small white building in the cemetery is his chapel, built in his honor.
- Admission: Free, and donations are encouraged.
- When: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month.
- Where: The Tolomoto Cemetery is located at 14 Cordova Street, St. Augustine 32084
Lullaby of the Rivers Festival
- Lullaby of the Rivers celebrates Earth Day with a festival on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 - 21, 2024, at the North Shores Community Park in Vilano Beach.
- Local singesongwriter Bob Patterson, and organizeactivist Carol Kramer, have used Bob's award-winning song "Lullaby of the Rivers" to create an Earth Day festival featuring regional musicians, storytellers, and environmental organizations.
- "Lullaby of the Rivers" is a tribute to Florida's rivers and their heritage. In his folksy storytelling style, Patterson invites listeners to embrace the Native American tradition of environmental responsibility by remembering that Florida's great rivers — including the Apalachicola, Ichetucknee, Ocklawaha, and Kissimmee — carry the names they were given by the native people.
- In addition to two days of musical entertainment, the event will include an Earth Day Resource Fair with activities for kids, sustainable food tastings, and environmental organization presentations. The mission of the Lullaby of the Rivers Festival is to "awaken and nurture connections to nature in gatherings of all ages by using music and stories that inspire environmental awareness and consciousness."
- Logistics
- Admission: General admission (for all aged 16 to 65) is $10.00/day. Active military, first responders, and seniors (65 and up) can get in for $5.00. Those 15 and under are free.

2024.04.19 23:27 RoscoesWetsuitt Just got back home - had a great trip after lurking this sub
Just got back after a few day stay and wanted to say thanks to this sub for great recommendations and to give my thoughts on things. Used this sub for a lot of recommendations and also winged things a bit. As I'm typing this out I'm realizing it's getting kinda long winded lol. Hope it might help some others out.
Sunday - Met friends at Bratz Y'all. Really liked it here. Pretty chill spot, good beers and all the food was phenomenal (Nola shnitzel, pork shank, pretzel with Bavarian caraway brie dip). Checked into the Marriott Warehouse Arts District hotel. Nothing too special but it was a nice hotel aside from being a block away from the shooting on Sunday... Walked down Bourbon mostly for the people watching. Grabbed some beignets at Cafe Beignet (really enjoyed the chocolate beignets) and watched the band for a bit. Got a hurricane at the Pat O'Brien's courtyard, man that thing sucked lol, it's like drinking juice with 5lbs of sugar in it. Walked to the casino, won $200 on a slot and then walked back to our hotel which may not have been the smartest idea, in hindsight. But we made it out alive.
Monday - Turkey and the Wolf for lunch. I can see why this place had a long line. The fried bologna sandwich and collard green melt were phenomenal. Portion sizes were huge and we loved the vibes of the restaurant. Stumbled upon Simon's gallery and the attached antiques shop. Really liked his work and after visiting, noticed a bunch of his pieces throughout the city. Did a self guided walking tour through the Garden District. The gardens, landscaping, architecture were all stunning. Went to Potions speakeasy. That was a super fun experience between finding the place and the actual bar itself. Drinks were a little pricey but highly recommend. Mr. B's for dinner was probably the dining highlight of the trip. Fantastic food and great service (Duck springrolls, seafood gumbo, seared scallops, sheepshead and crawfish, bread pudding, raspberry gooey butter cake). Stopped at Lafitte's for one and walked back to the hotel.
Tuesday - Breakfast at Two Chicks by the convention center. Seated right away, served right away and had some good crepes. Went to the WWII museum and was blown away. So much to see and learn, this place was friggin huge. Highly recommend it. Checked into Hotel Monteleone and loved it. I thought the room was pretty reasonable for how opulent the hotel was. Ate at Felix's Oyster Bar but wasn't that impressed. Food was alright but the place smelled like ass and just seemed kinda dirty. Found some great art galleries on Royal St (Leroy's Place - just super wacky stuff but it was our favorite, Rodrigue studio, Harouni gallery, Henderson gallery). Then went to a show at Toulouse Theater. Nice intimate music venue with super cheap drinks. Got back to the hotel and got our Kevin McCallister on and ordered some room service.
Wednesday - Cafe du Monde in city park. There was hardly a line, got our beignets super quick. Would've loved to spend more time in the park but had to start the drive home.
TLDR: went to Nola (can I say that) ate shit ton and had fun. Thanks for the recs
