2024.06.09 23:16 achago Trip Report (Family of Four with girls 11, 14)

I hope this report helps others as much as the ones before helped me plan!
May 30-June 8
Traveled to Japan from the west coast of US with husband and two daughters, 14 & 11.
May 30 Arrived at Narita Airport around 3 PM. The line at customs was over an hour long and it was stiflingly hot and humid in the customs area. the line wound around 2 giant rooms. We had done the QR code and it didn’t even matter- the line for QR code people and paper form people was the same line. After the long flight there, this was hard on us.
Arrived at our hotel- the FAV Tokyo Hotel in Ryogoku. I picked this hotel because of the price. It was high quality and the staff were super nice. The original room we had, though, was really small- 200 sq feet. we felt really cramped in there and ended up upgrading to a bigger room after 3 nights.
Upon arriving we unpacked a bit, walked around the corner to get some ramen, stopped at 7-11 to get some snacks and I checked the pharmacy for CPAP water. I found “soft water”- which I used and it seemed to be ok, even though they didn’t have official distilled water. We crashed around 8 pm.
May 31 It was a little rainy in the morning, so we changed up our plans and started in Akihabara. We went to a cat cafe and loved it- the cats were all super cute and healthy. They seemed pretty spoiled! We were underwhelmed by the anime stores in Akihabara though- I think you need to be really into it to like them. We were all feeling pretty tired so we went back to the hotel for a bit, then went out in the evening to Senso-Ji. Unfortunately all the vendors in Nakimise dori were closing when we got there, so we didn’t try a lot of the food we wanted to. But it was nice to see the temple when it was less crowded. We went to dinner at a sushi restaurant in Asakusa, and went to a cabaret dance show at Asakusa Kugua- which we all LOVED. We booked the tix through Viator but I think you can book directly. My 11 year old said it was her favorite part of the trip. I loved the shopping area around it. I actually wish we stayed in Asakusa- it ended up being my favorite area of Tokyo.
June 1 We started with day with breakfast at Yoshinoya which ended up being what we did every day, because my youngest daughter liked it so much. Traditional breakfast of miso soup, white rice and salmon. After that we went to Happy Pancake to see what all the fuss was about. I loved them- my daughters didn’t- they thought they tasted like eggs. After that, we did Shibuya scrambled, checked out Loft, went to Takeshita Dori in Harajuku and went to the Puma store in Shinjuku. I think it was a mistake to do these areas on a Saturday. The crowds were something I wasn’t prepared for- obviously I had seen videos but actually BEING in the chaos is a different story. I was really overwhelmed and tired by the end of this long day and I fell asleep by 7.
June 2 We started the day at TeamLabs Planets- which was really cool. We had booked our tickets well in advance and we didn’t feel overly crowded since they do timed entry. After that, we went to Yanaka Ginza, as I had heard that old town was a nice change to Shibuya. It was- but I wished for more- the “shopping street” was not as long as I thought it would be. Luckily it was walking distance to Nezu shrine, which was absolutely gorgeous. It started raining just as we arrived and I enjoyed the quiet, serene setting, watching the raindrops in the stream with koi fish swimming around. It was one of my favorite places in Tokyo.
June 3 This was our “theatrical” day. We started with a Samurai class that I had booked through Viator. Again, you could book directly through Samurai Theater. This was SO MUCH FUN. My husband’s favorite part of the trip. It was an hour long class, we got to dress up like Samurai’s (I’m plus size and it worked), and there’s a fun choreographed sequence they teach you that you do to music at the end. The instructors spoke great English and were just a lot of fun to spend time with.
We then went to Gonpachi- the restaurant that inspired the design of the restaurant in Kill Bill’s iconic sword fight scene. This didn’t disappoint- it’s a super unique interior design and we loved felling like we were in the movie (especially after having just had sword fights of our own!)
We ended the day with a Kimono Tea Ceremony with MAIKOYA Tokyo. This was also fun- the girls loved getting their hair done, getting to choose their kimono and we were all excited to learn how to make matcha tea and learn about the ceremony.
June 4 This was a “free” day so we decided to try Harajuku again on a weekday. It was a little less crowded and the girls were happy to get some fun clothes at ACDC Rags and Punyas. We also went to a puppy cafe. This one wasn’t as fun as the cat cafe. The dogs seemed really hungry- and it made me sad. (They looked well fed, but it makes me wonder if all their food comes through the hand feeding from visitors?) afterward, we went to the Pokémon Cafe for my 11 year old who loves Pokémon. The food was really bad- which we expected from reviews. I didn’t know, though, that you don’t get to take photos with Pikachu- he just does a little show and waves. This wasn’t worth it in my opinion. We then had ramen on “ramen street” at Tokyo station for dinner. We did the seafood ramen- I think I would have preferred a different one.
June 5 We traveled on the Shinkansen To Kyoto on this day. It was relatively easy as we connected through Shinagawa Station instead of Tokyo station. We checked into the Mimaru SHIJO (which was amazing and had free happy hour with beer and sake daily from 5-7!) and went straight to Nishiki Market and my husband tried allll the food. He loved all of it. The girls and I loved the shopping area connected to Nishiki. We did My Only Fragrance- a fun experience to design your own perfume (we had a reservation). I went to fushimi inari alone at sunset and was super excited that it wasn’t crowded and the light was stunning. I was there about 30 minutes. Later, My husband and I went out alone this evening in Gion. We saw two Maiko out and about (we didn’t take photos or harass). We also had the best sushi dinner of our lives in an 8-seat restaurant called Sushi Ninenzaka Numoto. We got REALLY lucky as we just walked in- I didn’t realize so many restaurants require reservations in Kyoto!
June 6 I woke up at the crack of dawn and my 14 year old and I took the Shinkansen down to Hiroshima. We went through the Peace Museum, which made both of us emotional- but her especially. She had to take some time afterwards sitting in the park on a bench while I explored the surrounding area- the dome, the different memorials, etc. we didn’t spend a lot of time in Hiroshima but it was important to me to go, and I’m happy we made the trip. My daughter said she wished I had warned her- had she known how emotional it would be she might have skipped it. I think it’s important that people learn from history so even though it was hard for her I’m glad she came with me. We were back in Kyoto by 2. We took a nap then took the train to Osaka to at least see the dotonbori- which was amazing. Such a great vibe. There was a live concert happening when we got there a girl JPoP band called Shinsekai Hero, and my daughters were super into it. We had conveyor belt sushi, tried some food at the stands and headed back to Kyoto.
June 7 Our last day in Japan. My husband and I went to Ninzaka and Sannenzaka at 10 when the shops opened up- we spent a lot. We loved the pottery shops and the doll shop. So many souvenirs bought. Later in the day we went to Kinkaku-Ji and it was everything I imagined and more. Even with the crowds it’s such a calming place. We tried to have dinner at a nice steakhouse that evening but again- no reservations.
June 7 Took the Shinkansen back from Kyoto to Tokyo station because we had an oversized bag and even with booking well in advance couldn’t get a reserved seat with the oversized bag connecting in Shinagawa. We made our connection (20 minutes!) but just barely and only because I had studied the Tokyo station map. If I hadn’t we would have missed our connection to the Narita express.
All in all- it was a great trip that was definitely a teaser for future trips. I wish we spent more time in Kyoto and Osaka- I think we would have liked those areas more than Tokyo. I also want to see more of the countryside, as I preferred the temples to the wild city.
Lessons learned -The subway was tricky for us- we gave up after day 1 and just took taxis which we not much more expensive than the subway and saved a lot of headache- we used Uber and the go taxi app - my daughter got a cold while we were there- the Payke app was a lifesaver as you could scan a bar code and the label with ingredients and instructions showed up in the app in English - my other daughters glasses broke - luckily there are a lot of eyeglass stores in Shibuya and they repaired them for a small fee - Make reservations in Kyoto - For language, I used “sumimasen” “nan ban nori ban?” and “arigato gozaimas” a lot but the other phrases I learned didn’t come up. I used google translate to type in and show people the Japanese when needed

2024.06.09 21:21 ComradeWolfman Questions about Fresno

Hi there. Looks like the last post asking about living in Fresno is from a few years ago, so figured I'd reach out and get a more current opinion.
TL;DR - New grad nurse and chef considering moving to Fresno, wondering about air quality and nice apartments (1/1) with patio/balcony in good neighborhoods with walkability close to parks/markets/cafes/etc. Wondering: What do you like about Fresno? What do you not like about Fresno?
My wife just graduated nursing school, passed the NCLEX, and officially has her license in CA to start working as a nurse. We're looking at moving to Fresno since there seems to be a lot of nursing gigs there. I'm a chef and food writer and thinking of possibly opening a restaurant (would probably start by doing pop ups). We live a pretty simple lifestyle and enjoy farmer markets, art galleries, museums, cafes, parks, canoeing, swimming, and trying new restaurants. Not big drinkers, but I do like sipping on mezcal and dark beer from time to time.
As far as weather goes, we're pretty flexible because we've lived all over the place (PNW, South Korea, FL). I understand that Fresno gets hot, but we've endured intense summers for most of our lives, so that's not really a big deal for us. From what I understand, Fresno's heat is on the drier side, which sounds much easier to live with than the sweltering humidity we've endured in FL and Korea. I am wondering about the air quality in Fresno, though. How often does it get hazy? How would you rate the air quality in general around the area?
What areas/neighborhoods should we look at for apartments? We don't have kids and we're just looking for a simple but nice 1/1 with a patio/balcony in a good neighborhood that's fairly walkable with some cafes, parks, and shops close by.
Any recommendations/tips are greatly appreciated. Cheers and thanks for your help.

2024.06.09 13:38 fruitful_ Another review of travelling the Faroes during the strike

Over the last week I travelled around the Faroes islands with my friend, three weeks into the workers strike. We arrived on the 3rd June, and everything ran fairly smoothly at the airport on arrival. We had been informed we would be guaranteed a car with a tank full of petrol via 62N/Europcar. Luckily, we actually had a car upgrade to a RAV4 hybrid, with a 3/4 full tank of fuel.
Our first stop was Gjaargardur Guesthouse Gjov, 73km from the airport. It was a beautiful location, and we had a nice private room overlooking the green hillside above us. There were no supermarkets here, so the main effect of the strike was that the dinner was a buffet with salmon, cod, lamb, soup, and roast vegetables, instead of an a la carte menu. It still tasted delicious and fresh, and was half the price of the normal menu so I thought it was actually a bonus. There was a sign at reception saying hours were limited during the strike, but there was still someone to greet us and give us the key at 8:30pm when we arrived. We had 2 nights here, so due to fuel shortages, we just did local walks in the area and didn’t use the car. The walk up the cliffside costs 50DKK per person, and has to be paid in cash.
Our next stop was an Airbnb in Klaksvík, 45km away. There were a number of supermarkets here, which still had enough food to get by. We cooked dinner at home for the two nights we stayed (salmon pasta with sundried tomatoes, chilli, corn, and a chilli bean dish with frozen veg and tinned tomatoes). The supermarkets had a limited amount of frozen fish, frozen vegetables, and no fresh bread or baked products. But there was plenty of dry/non-perishable food available. Again we had 2 nights here, and we did some local walks that were a short drive away, and also free.
Friday was our biggest driving day. We checked out of Klaksvík and drove to Sandavagur for the Lake in the Sky walk (71km). This cost 200DKK per person, and you could pay with card or cash at the little tourist office at the start. It was an incredible walk, and I felt like you could see where the money was going, as they’re staffing the office and are doing ongoing improvements to the trail. It took us about 2.5 hours of easy walking including lots of stops for photos and a little snack break by the waterfall.
After this walk, we drove to Sørvágur (9km) to catch the 1:15pm ferry to Mykines to see the puffins. The ferry cost 120DKK per person, but there is also a compulsory guided tour you have to pay for once you reach the island, i.e. you can’t do the walk on your own. It costs 400DKK per person if you book online the day before, or 500DKK if you pay on arrival to the island. It’s a pretty steep price, but it was also one of the best things we did, and we saw SO MANY puffins so close up on the cliff top. I have no regrets about the price at all! You can’t walk to the lighthouse anymore, as there was a landslide 3 years ago that damaged the trail. Apparently they may not ever repair the trail, as the puffin breeding populations seem to be doing much better without large number of tourists tramping near the burrows. There were a few other walking options you could choose once the guided part of the puffin tour was over, and there’s a little cafe with some simple drink options and cake while you wait for the ferry back. The 6pm return ferry also detoured around the Dragarnir arch so we got a really close up view of it.
Once we got back to the car, we then had a 48km drive to Torshavn, where we spent the last two nights. It was “Culture Night” when we arrived, and the garbage had actually been collected and the streets cleaned in preparation for the festival, even though these services have been on strike for the 3 weeks prior. The fish and chip shop was closed due to food shortages, but there was a ramen restaurant open that seemed to be offering a full menu.
On Saturday, our last full day, we had a fairly low key day and explored the local area. My friend went to the swimming pool and gallery, then we did one of the free village to village walks that was a short drive from town. For dinner that night, we went to a restaurant bar that only had a single serve of fish soup left, one type of Faroese open sandwich, and the chicken and chips from the children’s menu. It was plenty to feed the two of us (alongside some delicious Faroese beer).
This morning, we drove from Torshavn back to Vagar airport (46km) to continue on with our travels. The car still had at least 1/4 to 1/3 a tank of fuel left. The car return was just a key drop box as the office wasn’t open yet. We were told at the beginning that we could return the car without filling up. We would be charged with the cost of refilling the tank, but wouldn’t be charged the extra admin fee on top. Check in at the airport was fairly smooth. There may have been a few less staff members around, but as it’s a fairly quiet airport, there weren’t any long queues for bag drop or security.
Overall I felt like we were incredibly lucky to still have our trip in spite of the strikes! If we hadn’t been able to rent a car, it would have been a very different story, because we’d booked accommodation in three different places. We also got very lucky that Torshavn was cleaned up just before we arrived. If you’re coming to the Faroe Islands for a culinary experience, you would also be disappointed on that front. There were further attempts at negotiation from Thursday afternoon till Friday night, but no agreement was reached. The locals seem to be getting increasingly frustrated with the situation, and I imagine fuel and fresh food will only continue to become more scarce as it goes on.

2024.06.09 09:31 KoreanBunz Japan Trip Report (Last week of May and first week of June)

So, finally, my SO and I back home after an exciting Japanese Vacation. It was on our bucket list for years and we are so glad we did it and it went smoothly.
We landed at Narita Airport at 7 AM and finished our immigration and customs by 7.45 AM. We bought our Passmo Passport from Keisei Information Centre in literally two mins without a queue and were in the three persons queue at the Limousine Bus stop for our airport transfer to Shinjuku. I highly suggest the Limousine Bus Service as it was the most convenient and comfortable ride from NRT Airport to Shinjuku. The staff speaks English and put your luggage in the storage compartment, without you to have to worry about it. You can buy the tickets of limousine bus on KLOOK or at the arrivals hall of NRT airport.
From Shinjuku stop where the limousine bus dropped us and handed our luggage to us, we took a taxi to our hotel. It costed us 1200 yen and 10 mins to our hotel in Nishi Shinjuku. We had typed the hotel name and address in Japanese and printed it out. That piece of paper proved very useful after a 12 hour flight and 2 hour bus ride. We just handed out the printed paper to our taxi driver and he dropped us off at our hotel without a single word exchanged between us except thank you (arigato gozaimasu). It took away the anxiety of explaining our hotel address to taxi drivers in English and broken Japanese.
Our hotel was APA Hotel & Resort NishiShinjuku Gochome Eki Tower. We had booked an early check in for additional payment of 1000 yen per hour. We reached our double room on higher floor with city view and were shocked by the size of it. NO AMOUNT of research and reading up could mentally prepare us for the size of it. It was TINYYYYYYYY. But, very well appointed with night suits, kimono robes, room slippers, onsen slippers, huge TV, small bath tub, king size bed, working station with a chair, etc. We soon found our groove in the tiny room and found it to be very comfortable once the luggage was under the bed. I would highly recommend this hotel as it has an onsite onsen, swimming pool (payable), speedy WiFi, English speaking staff, vending machines, laundromat, luggage storage and transfer facility. But, its biggest plus point is that it’s 100 mts away from the NishiShinjuku Gochome Station with an elevator exit. That was the most convenient for us.
After relaxing in the tiny room for about 3 hours, we left the hotel at 2 PM for Meiji Jingu Shrine. We used the subway for it and it was very convenient. We thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful zen walk into the forest like atmosphere to reach the shrine. It was completely empty barring three more people about 1 km ahead of us. When we reached the Meiji Jingu Shrine we were greeted by a crowd. We spent maximum of 30 mins in the shrine and then walked to Takeshita Street. It was a 15 min relaxed walk and we enjoyed it. We LOVED the Takeshita Street and the hustle bustle there, spent around two hours, shopping for street wear fits and eating the crepes and tanghulu sweet treats. From there we walked the Cat Street, which was almost deserted and we didn’t even realise that we had already finished walking the iconic Cat Street until we asked a local. From Cat Street we walked to Shibuya, it was a 25 minutes walk and I had started to feel the tiredness by now. We found a Tully’s Cafe about 5 mins away from Shibuya crossing and chilled there for one hour having coffee and smoothies.
We reached the Shibuya Crossing by 6.30 PM and the excitement to see thousands of people crossing the iconic junction had pumped the energy back into me and I was ready for more exploring. We took a look at the Hachiku Statue and made our way up to Shibuya Sky for our entry slot of 7 PM. It was the most magical moment when we took the elevator up to the open observatory deck. The sky was turning red and rust and the Tokyo skyline lights were just firing up. We saw the sunset for about 15 minutes before the sky turned dark and then we enjoyed the night light views of Tokyo. It was absolutely STUNNING. Highly recommend booking the 6.45-7 PM slot for Shibuya Sky. We booked it via KLOOK about one month in advance.
We got down from Shibuya Sky by 8.30 PM and although we had a reservation at a vegan restaurant at Shinjuku for 9 PM, I personally couldn’t last any longer. I was extremely tired by that time so we took a subway back to our hotel. We rested in the hotel and had Seven Eleven ice cream and onigiri for dinner in our room and rested till about 11 PM.
At around 11 PM my FOMO kicked in and my partner and I took a cab to Omoide Yakucho drinking lane. It took us 8 mins by cab and 1000 yen. We had a local beer at the Albatross bar there and we loved the atmosphere and experience. We explored some more places in that lane but Albatross Bar was the best vibe. We then walked to Hotel Gracery to see the Godzilla head and Shinjuku neon billboards and lights. We found the area super greasy but it had a vibe of its own. We walked a bit further and found a nice beer brewery and bar and had a few beers there and it was amazing. We left that place by 12.30 AM and took a taxi back to the hotel. It costed us 900 yen. All in all it was the MOST FUN and ICONIC first day of a Tokyo trip. We had clocked 22,000 steps on Day 1.
Day 2:
We woke up by 8 AM and left the hotel by 10 AM. We first reached the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and had breakfast at the traditional Japanese tea house at the national garden. We relaxed in the garden and explored till about 12.30 pm and we left for TeamLabs Planet. We reached there and booked ourself the lunch experience at Uzu Restaurant at Tokyolabs Planet. It was hands down the ABSOLUTE BEST lunch experience with the yummiest bowl of Vegan Ramen. We enjoyed the immersive experience and were ready for experiencing the main exhibit by 3.30 PM. We spent two hours in the exhibit and it was absolutely the highlight of our trip. We both lovedddddd TeamLabs Planet experience and can’t wait to be back.
At around 6 pm we left for Asakusa area from Teamlabs and reached the Senso Ji temple at around 6.45 pm. We explored the shopping streets around the temple and watched the sun go down behind the temple. It was just so so so so beautiful. We had dinner at a roadside restaurant there and they were plenty. My SO loved the area so much that he made me promise that we will stay in this area instead of Shibuya or Shinjuku on our next visit to Tokyo. The man has taste.
We were back to our hotel by 10 PM and had drinks at our hotel bar and slept off by 12 AM.
We had successfully used the subway system without getting lost but we had also successfully AVOIDED starting or ending our subway journeys from the terrifying Shinjuku Station for first two days and we highly recommend everyone to do the same.
Because on Day 3 we got lost at Shinjuku station and it was NOT FUN. On day 3 we checked out of our hotel by 10 am and took the subway to Don Qui store Shinjuku (our hotel stored our luggage for us post check out). We spent 2.5 hours in Donki and other Shinjuku shopping places and while returning with our shopping bags we got lost in Shinjuku station for about an hour and I personally felt super disoriented but my SO took over the navigation and somehow we reached our hotel by 2 pm.
We then took our bags and made our way to Tokyo International Cruise Terminal via subway and metro. A sweet local Japanese girl guided us to the metro stop which was two floors above from where we were and she very kindly travelled with us on the escalators two whole floors up. I had never experienced such kindness from a stranger and was truly grateful and overwhelmed by her kindness.
We then embarked on our cruise ship at 3.30 PM and I will write the cruise report in the next post.
But, I must say that these 2-2.5 days in Tokyo were genuinely I had dreamed of and more. Although it was tiring t walk 20k steps a day but it was more than worth it. I can’t wait to be back.

2024.06.09 04:56 Asherphane Neighbor Yells at Kids For Being Loud, Has a History of being a Total Racist

I live in Santa Monica next to an apartment complex. I can only assume the windows and walls in the complex are pretty thin. In the last year, our back house is being rented by a family with two small children, 4 and 6. They play, they scream, we have a basketball hoop, and kids will be kids. A man in the other apartment, let’s call him Stubbs, is rightfully upset by the noise. But the manner in which he’s tried to handle everything is upsetting and petty. To my knowledge, none of the other tenants have had a problem with the kids and haven’t made complaints. Our tenants are perfectly happy to speak to anyone who has a complaint but Stubbs has retaliated by screaming at the kids, telling them to “fucking shut up”, mocking us, and he’s made no attempt to be civil about it.
The most recent event with Stubbs is that the kids and I are playing and Stubbs starts blasting music from his apartment, mocking the kids, and being petty. Our tenant starts making passive aggressive comments and starts provoking Stubbs. There’s an area behind the apartment where our properties are divided by a small chain link fence. Stubbs goes over to the fence and starts yelling and mocking us. I get everything recorded but they are just going at it throwing insults at each other. Things are said in the recording and I’m afraid that Stubbs has grounds for legal action of his own, such as defamation. I don’t know much about what else Stubbs has done, but my tenant has caused him to be a pedophile which is a serious accusation. Again, I don’t know everything, things could’ve been said in the heat of the moment, but I don’t want to see my tenant get sued or some legal action be brought against him for something he’s said. I fully believe Stubbs deserves to be charged with harassment or he needs to get kicked out of the apartment, but the issue is we’re not 100% innocent. I don’t want to find myself wrapped up in this. Should we have any legal issues, this could get complicated because we have a history of having issues with the guy.
He has had issues with us before for similar reasons. When I was a kid, my brother and I and some of our friends would play basketball at night. Stubbs would also back then tell us to shut the fuck up. The issue is my brother and the friend start taunting Stubbs and provoking him. Stubbs leaves his apartment and shows up at our door. We lock the doors of course, I don’t remember what happened next but we have videos of him screaming at us while we tell him to get off our property and he wouldn’t. So this is a pattern of behavior from him.
Allegedly, a lot of people in our neighborhood have an issue with Stubbs and he has a history of being a racist. He yelled at a mail worker (who was either black or Latina I don’t remember) for parking on the street and being in his way. I wasn’t there for the event, but allegedly she parked her truck in the driveway (which is shared by all the tenants of that apartment) and he was just screaming at her. Saying something to the effect of “in America we don’t blah blah blah” you get the point. My mom goes out and confronts him and he just backs off.
On another occasion,ALLEGEDLY, he has been racist to me (21 5’0 Asian F). I never saw his face but his words and actions and what I could make from small glances match his description of being a 5’5 middle aged white coward with a beer belly. I was at the Urth Cafe with a friend. The line to the place is always long and it’s always packed inside. As we move up in line, I can hear who I think is Stubbs directly behind me muttering under his breath about how it’s taking so long, he’s getting pissed, and I’m getting nervous. As I’m next in line, I try and make room for the people around me who are passing, but this guy mutters under his breath “move up you stupid fucking chink, you stupid bitch”. I’m not Chinese and I don’t even look East Asian. I regret not turning around and asking him to speak up. I try to handle problems diplomatically and the last thing I wanted was to escalate the situation. But I keep my head down as if I didn’t hear him. I’ve never been back to the cafe since and it has been over a year. I understand there is room for doubt if it was actually Stubbs, but again, the man’s behavior matches Stubbs’ description.
So I carry pepper spray and a taser on me at all times and I’m terrified. That man knows my face, knows my name, and where I live. I don’t want to have another confrontation with him and I especially don’t want to be alone should that happen. I don’t want to be wrapped up in any legal battle, but I want to protect my family and protect those kids. I am biased of course, but I think that piece of shit has to go. People have a right to a childless lifestyle but not a childless world. Does anyone have any advice? Are we the assholes?
TLDR: petty neighbor yells at kids for being loud, has a history of harassing me, my family, and is a racist, are we in the wrong for being loud?

2024.06.09 01:42 lulucontytis Backyard bars, North Austin and norther?

Does anyone know if there’s some zoning, permits, or laws or something preventing the north Austin metro area (Scofield/Millwood, Pflugerville, Pioneer, Round Rock) from having backyard bars? A la Moontower Saloon, Armadillo Bar, Meanwhile Brewing or Family Business Beer Co. - you know, ones with picnic tables, rickety wood awnings, mulch, food trucks and cafe lights, and sometimes even a playground.
It seems a very untapped market, badly needed with the amount of families up here. We have spots of big trees that would create nice canopies.. it would be a slam dunk I’m sure. Nothing franchised or corporate feeling… I just don’t understand why they don’t exist up north, and it seems like it’s gotta be some bureaucratic red tape.

2024.06.08 23:30 Outrageous_Band_117 Six Dream Cast (Movie Adpation):

Aragon : Beyonce or Jennifer Hudson (the queen bees, the drama with their commanding presence, all eyes of them)
Boylen: Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat or Scarlett Johannson (the provocatofemme fatales with the smoky, raspy vocals with a punk edge). Madonna back in the 80’s-90’s would’ve killed that role as Boylen.
Seymour: Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood or Demi Lovato (the emotive singers with melisma)
Cleves: Keke Palmer (the unapologetic, independent woman with confidence and comedic timing), I think Lil Kim would’ve killed this role back in the early 2000’s
Howard: Madison Beer, Sydney Sweeney or Elle Fanning (the innocent and the naive, the youngest, and the sexualized one)
Parr: SZA, H.E.R or Victoria Monet (the survivor with an R&B twist)

2024.06.08 23:12 kiwirichprick Our country is great

I know it can feel like all the posts here are about cost of living, negatives, etc, but I think we have it really good, even if you don't have that much money, for example:
It's Sunday morning, I'm going to take the family to brunch, and maybe go on a joyride to Clevedon enjoying the great winter sun, get some cycling done, a bit of gardening, and close off with a nice cosy evening with the cat. None of this needs money, just the mindset.
EDIT: Aaand its started to rain and get muddy, no cycling or gardening, but at-least we've got fantastic cafes and activities to spend a lazy afternoon in.

2024.06.08 21:09 SampleEarly9371 Pre-match fun for Belgium-Romania in Cologne

I'm going to watch our national team play against Romania in Cologne as surprise birthday present for my dad's 60th. I (28) am going with my two brothers (21 & 23) and my dad, having never seen Belgium or any team play at a big tournament. We'll get to Cologne around 1pm, where could we find fellow Belgians to have some beers and soak up/create some atmosphere before the game? Couldn't find anything online. Thanks in advance!

2024.06.08 21:03 Izamida Is there a list/calendar of weekly free local music around the city?

Hi all!
I recently moved to Chicago (Streeterville) from Houston. When I lived in Houston, I frequented a lot of beer gardens, cafes, and other local spots for weekly live music/events - mainly free jazz shows.
For Houston examples: Axelrad Beer Garden has free live jazz in their garden every Wednesday night, Mercantile Coffee has free live jazz every Tuesday night, 93 ‘Til has a local DJ vinyl night every Thursday, Tribeca is a music venue that has a free jam session local musicians can come hop in every Sunday.
Does anyone have a similar list of weekly live music events at their favorite bars, cafes, etc. in Chicago? I wasn’t able to find one in the subreddit search. I know Chicago is one of those cities where you can find a touring artist playing any night of the week, but I’m looking for more home grown stuff where I can be a regular.
Thanks!

2024.06.08 20:55 Drivewealth_club 'I'm older than my wife's mum - people stare but 31-year age gap means nothing'

A married couple with a 31-year age gap believes that age is just a number - despite the hubby being older than his wife's mum.
Marjorie and Mark Jensen, 33 and 64 respectively, say they barely noticed their age difference despite getting 'shocked' looks from strangers. The couple, who tied the knot in November 2022, began dating when Marjorie was 28 and Mark 59, after being introduced by a mutual friend.
They had to navigate some 'problems' when introducing Mark to Marjorie's family, with the retired writer, producer and director being just one year older than Marjorie's mother, who is 64. During their first meeting, nervous Mark also had to contend with Marojorie's 'stern' 74-year-old father showing him his knife collection.
However, despite the challenges they've faced, Marjorie and Mark say they now live an idyllic life sailing the world together on a 40-foot sailing boat.
Marjorie shared: "I think we're in total harmony, Mark and me, we're in the same place, everything works together, we don't notice the age gap because we like the same things in the same way."
Mark, of Sydney, Australia, bought the boat that is now their home after retiring from his media career at the age of just 48. Marjorie, who is French, previously worked for the French government before taking a sabbatical to join her now-husband out at sea.
After sailing from the Caribbean to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the adventurous couple now intend to travel across the Atlantic, where they will spend time in London, and France, where they first met. Mark had been spending time in Cherbourg, in the north of the country, where he was part of a group that included English-speaking French people. It was during this time that he first locked eyes with his now-wife.
Lovestruck Mark recalled: "I met everybody in Cherbourg who could speak English, except Marjorie because she never came along to those meetings. I got to meet (Marjorie's) co-worker and we would often have a beer together and one day he said he has a friend coming along to join us.
"We were at this bar which had a mezzanine level, we were sitting on the top level and we could look down. A very pretty lady walked across the floor, turned around and looked up towards where we were and waved. I thought she must have been waving at someone behind us but she was waving at my friend."
After sending a friend to get drinks at the bar, the pair sat alone together, and one tricky problem quickly became apparent. Mark remembered: "I just thought, 'what happens now?' because she can't speak English and I can't speak French so we were just looking at each other."
Although Marjorie began learning English as a primary school pupil, and could use English to speak to non-French people, furthering their conversation initially proved difficult. She explained: "I did it like every French person, when you're asked if you speak English, you say 'a little bit' and then you just stop there and you don't know what to say next."
By the end of the evening, however, Marjorie felt as though she was already in love. She revealed: "I actually forgot that my co-worker was in front of us and I just saw Mark, and only Mark, and by the end of the evening I was totally in true love."
Mark, who had at that point resigned himself to the single life, added: "I was obviously (attracted to Marjorie) but I had previously made a decision not to look for women and to live my life without the necessity of having a woman, a partner, because that's just where life was going. I just wanted to be comfortable within myself. When I met Marjorie, it was lovely because I wasn't expecting it and I didn't know where things were going to go."
Warning Marjorie that he 'wasn't looking for a girlfriend', Mark told her that any relationship with him would mean 'sailing around the world' on his boat. At first, Marjorie wasn't too sure about this idea, and wanted to date first before making her mind up.
Marjorie said: "The first day I started to be interested in him I was like 'he's older, what are you doing?' But then it just goes away because physically and mentally, he doesn't feel like an old man, sometimes I feel like I'm dating a guy who is 40 years old."
Reflecting on the early days of their courtship, Mark shared: "I've been out of Australia for a while, my mother and father already passed away, so it was just my two sisters and it wasn't a problem for me. The problem for me was meeting Marjorie's mother and father."
He continued: "Marjorie's father looks very stern and when I met him, I'm thinking he's not all right with the age difference. We're sitting there at the table and he brings out his hunting dagger and knife collection.
"Right behind him was a furniture sideboard and right behind that was something that looked just like the butt of a pistol. I just thought if I wasn't on my good behaviour, he's going to pick it up and blow my head off, but it wasn't a gun, it just looked like it."
Offering her own perspective on this intimidating first encounter, Marjorie said: "Everyone was scared how my dad was going to react but throughout the first day, they started getting on. Everyone was tense until he pulled out the knives, then we all started to relax a bit."
The couple have also had to deal with some 'shocked' looks when kissing in public, but don't let the stares get to them. According to Marjorie: "Nobody says anything (in public) but when I met Mark, I was 28 and at that time, I tended to look younger than my age. I remember in Belgium, I kissed Mark in a restaurant and there were people next to us who looked shocked – so he said 'kiss me again'. When we started to date, people were looking but now I look more my age."
Remarking upon the youthful effects Marjorie's 'young person's imagination' has on him, Mark reflected: "When Marjorie is watching her shows, an anime, a horror movie, something like that, I love her imagination because it's a young person's imagination.
"Most people have lost their imagination by the time they're 23 or 25 but Marjorie's still got it and she's going to have it when she's 50 or 60 or 70. There's no people I know in their 50s, 60s or 70s that have the imagination Marjorie has or the imagination that I have. The use of imagination is pivotal to our relationship because Marjorie has a young attitude and so do I."
Before journeying over to Europe, Mark and Marjorie will spend the rest of the year exploring the US, stating that they are embarking on their 'own adventure' together which could take them anywhere in the world. Mark continued: "I believe that it's more important for me to dream up and achieve my own adventures. I have taken this boat right around the world with Marjorie, we're doing our own adventures and that is what's important.
"On the boat, we're right there with each other all day, every day, and we absolutely rely on each other when we're in the middle of the ocean."

If anyone needs a recommendation for a pub for good food or drink, "The Church" on Mary street is one of our favourites, as is "The Harbourmaster", both near Luas trams stops to the 3Arena, or on the city centre southside, "Gotham Cafe" is where we usually have a pizza and a beer before heading down. Any questions, please fire away, a fellow Victim.
