Are my strings to high?
Just picked up a New Mexican fender strat SSS today , in love with it, but I’m not too handy with guitars and tinkering with them (I’m nervous to work on this), I’m just curious, the strings feel a bit high and I was wondering if anyone could eyeball this and see if they appear too high. Also my B string is buzzing when it’s played open. Want this guitar to play to the best of its ability so any advice helps.

2024.05.29 03:13 OtherwiseAd1340 Been playing 33 years, NEVER played a Fender or Fender-style before, just got my first Strat today! Some observations...

So, I'm 43 and started playing guitar on my 10th birthday when my uncle gifted me his old 1970s Aria SG clone guitar. Since then, I've mostly played Gibson/Epiphone, Ibanez, and Jackson guitars and the like. I've always wanted a Strat, but was never content to go with a Squier (even though I have lots of Epiphones and it's the same deal) - I wanted a "real" Stratocaster. Today, I finally found one used for a good price; it's old and has been heavily modified (MIM body, electronics were replaced with American Standard, and neck is a Mighty Mite that appears to have been probably decal'd with the Fender logo & patent stuff and the "Original Contour Body" text, which were then laquered over), and it's a little beat up (I like that though; adds character), but it's AMAZING! I think it might take the top spot for my favorite guitar.
The neck not even being an original Fender neck is great. I don't know how it compares to normal Fender necks, but it feels amazing, frets are very nice, action is the lowest I've ever seen on a guitar, no fret buzz anywhere, it's awesome. It feels like an old, well-broken-in guitar. And it has that perfect, distinct Strat sound that you'd expect from listening to artists like Jimi Hendrix. It's everything that I was hoping it would be!
Couple things, though... I keep hitting the middle pickup, the volume knob, and the pickup selector switch. I don't know why the controls are all so close to the strings. It could be the playing style I developed over the years of playing on non-Fenders, but it's a real bummer. I tend to always rest my palm on the bridge because I play a lot of metal and it's an easy transition into palm muting from the bridge. I've read people saying you should play between the middle and neck pickups to avoid hitting the middle pickup, but that feels really weird for me. It also kind of gets your hand out of the way of the volume knob, but it's still really easy to hit the pickup selector switch from that position. I guess I just strum too heavily, but I'm not sure if I can truly modify my playing style so much after so many years.
Any advice?

Ring above nut on open G
I've got 2 strats mexican and american elite. The mexican had an annoying ring past the nut that would go away when I pressed the string behind the nut. I fixed this issue with a second string tree 8 years ago no big deal.
My american elite I got about 8 months after the mexican. It had the same ringing as well but not as noticeable. I decided to upgrade the tuners on my mexican with locking tuners. I put the elite tuners on the mexican since it has 2 string trees the heights won't matter. Then I put the staggered locking tuners (fender) on my american elite which dont seem to much or lower at all. But the ring is still there when I play unplugged. Is my only option to add a second string tree?
I'd prefer not to put any extra holes in this guitar. Has anyone had this issue?

2024.05.28 20:37 outworldfingers 24 fret S-style guitar vs 22 fret help

I'm thinking of getting an S-style guitar, but haven't decided on the guitar yet. I plan on playing Pop, rock, blues, r&b, and pop punk on it. Think John mayer, H.E.R, Beat crusaders, Polyphia, Fall Out Boy, and Paramore. Primarily looking for a HSS guitar, but not against a SSS or HSH. So I have two questions.
  1. If I get a 24 fret guitar, would I be able to just eq it to sound closer to the strat sound?
  2. What guitar do you think would best work for this? Right now, I'm looking at these guitars (please suggest any other guitars):
    1. Kiesel Delos (22 fret HSS) or Phil mcknight penny metallic
    2. Kiesel A2 (HSS)
    3. PRS Silver Sky
    4. PRS Fiore
    5. Fender H.E.R
    6. Fender Ultra
    7. Ibanez TOD10

2024.05.28 16:26 sk1ttlebr0w HELP! Need to build good rigs/boards for emo/pop-punk project

I'm a pretty huge newb when it comes to gear. Like this modeler is my first real experience messing around with any type of guitar amp. I bought an MX5 and it seems pretty intuitive/user friendly. I grabbed a Line 6 Powercab 112 thinking that should get me through playing with a drummer, a bassist and another guitarist. Joined a band with that lineup and the bassist uses a 4x12 rig and the guitarist a 2x12. Drummer said he couldn't hear me when I turned the Headrush and the Line 6 all the way up (did a little research and that may be because the Headrush doesn't push out enough volume?), so I've been playing through several different pieces of equipment since. The other guitarists' Marshall head (model escapes me) running through a 2x12, a boss amp modeler (sounded like absolute shit through that) through a Fender Combo (tubes blown out).
The other issue is I'm playing a Squier 39th anny Strat. 3 single coil pickups. Did some online research and realized single coils have no balls for what we're trying to do. I'm not sure if that's basically the issue or if there's some distortion/pedal that exists in the Headrush that would help my cause.
Also, just looking at what type of rigs I can build out or if any of the preset rigs are recommended with a few tweaks. We do some clean stuff (maybe add reverb? not sure), distortion (obviously), overdrive for leads might be nice, delay. Don't think I need anything else.
If I'm switching between using this as basically just a pedalboard vs using the amp/cab sims, what else do I need to do besides just turn the cab/amp sims off? There's something in Global Settings I would have to change, correct? Does this change if you plug in the input vs the FX loop?

Fret and pick up questions
Hey everyone, just picked up a 60s road worn strat from marketplace for a good deal I think. I do have a few questions though. Upon inspection once I got home, the frets look flat almost. Is that a feature of the “road worn”-ness of the guitar? If not do you think these are able to be fixed by a luthier? Also I know they’re supposed to come with Tex mex pickups but I removed the pick guard and saw a custom shop sticker on the back of them. Did some research and I think they’re cs69 pickups. Idk how to tell. If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Asked in fender but waiting for the post to be allowed

2024.05.28 04:59 DoktorNietzsche Looking for thoughts on a guitar

I am looking at a 2018 Mexican made Classic Series '72 Thinline Telecaster. Is there anything I should know or look out for? What is the quality like for Mexican Fenders in 2018?
I currently own a 1989 American Standard Strat that I bought new back in 1989.
I have played an original 1972 Thinline Tele, and I know that a MIM reissue is not going to be exactly on that level.

2024.05.28 04:58 DayNumber6 Action/String height issue? Buzzing and muting

I bought a brand new fender MIM strat about a month ago, and it has been playing perfectly fine until recently. I’ve been away for a little while, around a week, so i’ve been unable to play, but when i returned and picked it back up i noticed that the action seemed way lower than before. some of the strings are buzzing even when i don’t fret them, and some strings - especially the higher 3 - when fretted play like they’re being muted and do not ring out at all. Something pretty strange is that when I lay the guitar flat and play the issue becomes a lot worse, and as i gradually tilt the guitar away from me and play it seems to get a little better. Is this to do with action or bowing or something similar? I’ve been playing my whole life but i know very little about repairing/diagnosing issues with guitars. Thank you!!

2024.05.28 04:57 AgentCooderX Do you play your electric guitar unplug sometimes?

I often times play my electric guitars unplugged specially when im chilling out like watching tv with familes, or working, or just sitting down with nothing to do, i just mostly do this to exercise my fingers and/or 'semi' learn a song without disturbing people and being detached from people around me specialy my son. I know there are things like Katana Go or I can use headset to noodle in my guitar and not disturb people but i dont want to "detached" myself and still play and talk to people..
my point of asking is, playing my guitars unplugged can sometimes show the raw difference betweem this guitars without the effects and enhancements, Ex: a Fender Strat with maple neck sounds brighter and vibrate alot compare to say rosewood necks. sometimes the difference is on the strings, etc.
so my question is, do you guys also play your guitars unplugged for longer period of time or do you always play it plugged?

2024.05.28 03:02 Twinningses State of the board

State of the board
Title fixed. Been playing acoustic-only for the last 15 years and just finished building out my board as I come back to electric.
Signal chain is a Fender Strat -> board -> Roland JC 40
Absolutely zero dirt (aside from the rat switch on the Pulp). Just about getting my clean tones right to taste, and I haven't felt much of an inclination to use dirt lately. I'm surprised that 3/6 pedals are TC Electronic as I've never been drawn to them for any particular reason (nothing against them, just not a vast I-got-to-have-it draw) but I can't deny their utility and ability to just work.
Now that the basics are done, I'll probably expand into the flavouweird with a Pitch Fork +, Tensor, and Cloudburst next. I'm playing ambient stuff so this suits so far.
If I ever need dirt I have a Gibson Explorer plugged straight into a Marshall DSL 5C cranked up.

2024.05.28 01:18 sal_mich13 What guitars do I really need?

Okay so I'm not a pro musician or anything, I'm in high school and I have one strat-like (its not great but gets the job done) guitar and an acoustic and one guitar I made myself. Now I'm getting a job over the summer and will have some money to spend and I think I'll likely purchase a new electric next year. Just not sure which is really necessary. Budget is probably under 500. Let me know! (Also amp recommendations are very welcome)
UPDATE:
(this is what im considering)

2024.05.27 23:34 YolkBreaker Color difference between maple fretboards

I’ve noticed quite a few used Strats (I’m looking at the Standard, Player, and FSR Special Edition Standard models, not the pricier models) with nice darker yellow almost amber looking maple fretboards. The brand new Player Strats with maple fretboards (I’m considering one with a black body or a white body) however don’t look like that at all. The fretboard looks really pale. From what I’m reading online, maple won’t darken much overtime unless it has nitro finish which these guitars don’t have. Did Fender change the look of these necks over the past few years or what’s the reason for the difference in look?

Hey all, a couple of years ago, I really got into the band Greenday, and I started listening to all their old albums religiously. I also watched a lot of their live concerts, and I noticed that the frontman of the band, Billie Joe Armstrong, was playing a Sticker Bombed Fender Strat. Most of the stickers were basic stuff like Jokes, Pop, culture references, or other underground band logos of the time, but this exact sticker does not seem to have any real origin, and I have been looking everywhere to find its origin for the past 3 years. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this image and/or knows where it originates from. (I apologise for my horendous grammar in advance it's my second language)

2024.05.27 21:18 DaedraPixel 1994 Custom 22

1994 Custom 22
Bit of an update: a few weeks ago I posted this guitar that I got for a really good price at a pawn shop. Had to get some work done on it: refret, new nut, and new volume pot. My first PRS and learned a good bit about them in the time with this shop. While McCarty custom 22 started in production in 1994, I still can’t tell if this is a McCarty or not. Neck profile and body thickness say McCarty, but there are no McCarty markings on the back headstock or pickup cavities. Also, no truss rod cover. Almost all hardware is non original so this wouldn’t be much of a McCarty outside of the neck feel and body thickness anyways. The 85/15 pickups are insanely versatile (now that the wiring has been done and I can actually hear it), I really love the push/pull tones. The coil splits are making my beloved Made in Mexico Strat (with custom 50s pickups) sit around more. Honestly can’t say I’d put the tones of this guitar over my Les Paul. But I can tell you that the comfort and versatility make it awesome to practice with and explore my set up more. Whether you are a Gibson or Fender guy (insert your preference on classic styles from other brands here), I think a PRS deserves its own place in your collection. Can’t explain it but the preciseness of the pickups have got me dabbling in other genres and styles. I set it up with 9s and it practically plays itself, I still might go back to 10s or 11s for feel sake though. New bone nut seemed to give the guitar a bit more zing (the good kind) to its unplugged sound. Can’t tell you how it impacted the plugged in sound, if at all. All in all, I put about $1,550 in this guitar (buying it, to getting it refret, new nut, wiring redone). So stoked to revive this guitar, it was definitely played heavily (the back and sides are pretty dinged and scratched up). I’m a sucker for a pretty worn down guitar, so I’d consider this well “relic’d” without the price tag. Also, team moon inlays all the way. I thought I wanted the birds but the abalone and pearl (or whatever materials in the moon dots) are simply beautiful. Does anyone know what pickups were stock at the time? (Last picture was the guitar when I got home with it, first is how it is now)

Thoughts on pick guard and plastics combos for buttercream strat
Been wanting to update the look of my buttercream player strat. Depending on the light the buttercream comes off as either be a real nice, creamy vintage white almost or a bright banana yellow. Was hoping a different plastics combo could help dull the times it’s more banana yellow and just give it a better overall look.
I’m also partial to traditional fender color combos. The player strat comes with parchment pickguard and parchment plastics and I wanted to experiment with a mint pickguard and vintage white plastics. I’ve got it narrowed down to one of the combos using the vintage white plastics and was wondering what you guys thought. I also wanted to post for anyone else with a buttercream strat who has had similar thoughts, so they could get a reference without having to do the work.
The pictures in order are: 1.) stock-parchment on parchment 2.) mint pickguard with parchment plastics 3.) parchment pickguard with vintage white plastics 4.) mint pickguard with vintage white plastics
