2024.05.16 21:26 TheHappySkier [CA] Minor job title discrepancies in background check

My background check from Hireright came back with two discrepancies. One was a mistake on my end, the other it appears the person verifying the information wasn't accurate (or maybe didn't realize the importance of it matching exactly). I have already accepted the written offestarted the onboarding process.
So I'm a graphic designer... On one job I stated that I was a 'Designer' and turns out the actual job title was 'Production Designer'. This was a totally honest mistake. It was a short lived job and I only remember them referring to me as Designer. I had completely forgotten the production part! It wasn't until they brought it to my attention and I dug up my offer letter in an archived email and I realized I had made an error. I told them they were right and I had made a mistake.
On job two I was 'Senior Graphic Designer'. This was absolutely my job title. Evidently the person confirming said I was a 'Graphic Designer'. And his response to verify my dates of employement was "that sounds about right"—which also caused a red flag that I was asked to verify. I saw the name of the person confirming my information in the report, and when I worked with him, he was also a staff member (he's now a partner, which I assume is why he took the call), but I'm guessing he doesn't remember my exact title (also this was another job I wasn't at very long due to a move). The business owner that hired me would probably be the only one that remembers accurately. It's a very small agency so I'm sure their record keeping is different than a large corporation.
I had applied for job two through Ziprecruiter, and even though the job is closed you could see that I applied in my account history, indicating a Senior role, and the date and time my resume was viewed by the business owner. I also had a follow up email from the business owner through Ziprecruiter stating the job title. So I sent screen shots of both of those. I also sent over some email correspondence between the owner and I indicating start date and my acceptance of the 'Senior' Designer role. And I found a check from the last month I was there & my 1095-c form showing insurance coverage for the time I was employed by them as documentation of dates employed.
The whole process thus far with my new company has been so smooth and everyone has been very communicative throughout the process, but I sent these files over two days ago and haven't heard back yet. I've been checking email incessantly and making myself crazy! Wondering if I should follow up or give it a little more time? Is this something I should worry about?

2024.05.16 21:12 Straight-Manner-2147 What should I do about my mortgage options with a pending layoff? AZ/WA

I find myself in a unique financial situation and would like some advice.
I have listed my condo here in the Washington state, I should see about $125k in cash once the transaction settles in July.
I’ve got about $35k in cash besides that.
I am being put on a 60 day leave prior to being fully laid off on 9/12. At that point I will have an additional infusion of around $45k-$50k, and 50 weeks severances my current salary of $75k. Plus unemployment of $1000 a week.
I am relocating to the Arizona and would like to get a new home lined up and hopefully closed on, prior to me being made officially unemployed. I know I will be seen as more risky once the job ends, but I will have enough cash on hand and coming in through severance and unemployment to be able to pay my mortgage with plenty of cash leftover. This makes me feel better about taking a mortgage at this point. Plus, it shouldn’t take me too long to find a new role. Accountants are always in demand.
Can anyone point out any suggestions or things I need to consider? I will carry medical, dental and life insurance for two years through my current employer.
I’m assuming I shouldn’t tell the mortgage broker that the layoff is coming, I’ve been a remote worker for a few years so I don’t think they will question it too much. Thoughts? Hoping to put $160k-$200k down on a home around $300k.
Hate to rent too long, rent is more than my payments would be.

2024.05.16 21:11 Gabahealthcare What Causes Postpartum Depression?

What Causes Postpartum Depression?
Becoming a parent is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world. Even the mere thought is associated with a lot of intense emotions and feelings. The birth of a baby is expected to bring unmatched contentment and joy. But, sometimes, it may result in an unfortunate condition - Postpartum Depression.
https://preview.redd.it/4pq9i22h9u0d1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=9949f45e958ddccbe5611960af84da266826a2a7
It is also known as Postnatal Depression. This condition is the onset of a depressed mood and its associated symptoms within the first year of the birth of the child. It is observed that most mothers experience baby blues, and some mothers develop persistent severe symptoms that do not resolve on their own.
Postpartum Blues and Postpartum Depression are two different sides of the same coin, but Postpartum Depression is more severe and is a long-term condition that should not be overlooked. Postpartum Blues, also known as Baby Blues, are temporary changes in mental and emotional state that occur in the mother within 2 to 3 days after childbirth and last for approximately 2 weeks.
They usually resolve on their own without medical intervention. However, suppose the symptoms of Baby Blues elevate and persist for more than a few weeks. In that case, it can be identified as Postpartum Depression (PPD), which is a more serious condition and requires proper support and health care.
Jessica, a 37-year-old mother of a four-year-old, recalls feeling irritable, sleepless, stressed, and angry after giving birth. She did not receive a formal diagnosis and prefers to refer to her symptoms as "Baby Blues" rather than "Postpartum Depression" considering the severity of her condition.
Postpartum Depression Causes
Every year, there are 140 million births worldwide, while the incidence of postpartum depression is estimated to be around 10–20 percent of new mothers. The obvious question to ask is why some mothers get postpartum depression while others do not. Here are a few causes:
Genetics
Studies indicate that sometimes family history of the condition is one of the main causes of postpartum depression in mothers. More people have this prevalent subtype of major depressive disorder than any other psychiatric disorder due to genetics.
The largest meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies carried out by an international team of researchers investigated the genetic makeup of postpartum depression. According to the study, common genetic factors may account for approximately 14% of the variations seen in cases of postpartum depression.
Chronic Fatigue
Evidence suggests that chronic fatigue may raise a woman's risk of postpartum depression. Lack of sleep lowers sleep quality, making it harder for a mother to regain her physical stamina and agility. The symptoms of anxiety and depression may worsen as a result of inadequate sleep.
A single sleep session is insufficient to address the chronic fatigue that emerges from an imbalance between rest and activity. It impacts over 60% of new mothers and may result from many conditions, including thyroid dysfunction, anemia, inflammation, and infection. The changes in the mother’s hormones may also result in postpartum fatigue.
Jessica had to deal with sleep disturbances in the postpartum period. She also recalls having insomnia and struggling to sleep for the recommended number of hours. Implementing sleep hygiene in small but significant steps would have helped her deal with this situation more effectively.
Loss of Aspiration
Stressors related to psychology may arise as a result of becoming a mother. The drastic changes in a woman’s body, overwhelming responsibilities, and perception of society can all trigger and contribute to low self-esteem. A person may easily experience a loss of motivation and aspiration as a result of such abrupt changes in their life, which can exacerbate the symptoms of postpartum depression.
Women are more likely to feel difficult feelings like frustration, confusion, anxiety, guilt, and sadness during the postpartum period, in addition to overwhelming emotions like excitement, anticipation, fulfillment, and happiness.
Jessica recalls feeling a lack of ambition and fear about the future after having her baby. She almost forgot to have some fulfilling "me time" because she was so preoccupied with the responsibilities of her child.
Relationship Discord
When a child is born, the parent's relationship undergoes a dramatic transformation. Despite this milestone being a source of great joy, it can also lead to emotional distress due to parental frustration shortly afterward. These intense emotions may result in postpartum depression symptoms in both parents. It can disrupt the mother-child bond and, in some cases, affect the child’s emotional and cognitive development. Paternal discord can lead to later disorders in children and have an impact on their behavioral development.
Individuals' depressive states worsen during this phase when couples stop doing things they used to enjoy together, such as traveling, going to the gym, enjoying moments together, seeing friends, and spending evenings out. This disconnection can sometimes become so severe that couples lose recognition for each other as the people they once loved. While adjusting to the arrival of a newborn, the mother may struggle to maintain her bond with her elder children. Elder children may struggle to cope with the arrival of a new sibling because it divides the mother's attention and makes them feel less loved.
Jessica's relationship conflict with her husband was the most difficult aspect of her pregnancy and postpartum experience. She struggled to cope without her partner during her difficult divorce.
But she was really fortunate to have the support of her friends and family, which helped her avoid severe mental health symptoms. She still believes that the presence of both parents would have been beneficial to her daughter's behavioral development.
Sheehan’s Syndrome
Sheehan's syndrome, first described in 1937, is postpartum hypopituitarism caused by shock or hypotension as a result of massive hemorrhage or blood loss during or after childbirth. This syndrome can manifest itself during or after the postpartum period as lactation failure, generalized weakness and debility, cessation of menstrual periods, premature wrinkling of the face and forehead, body hair loss, and dry, coarse skin.Sheehan's syndrome is estimated to affect one out of every 1,00,000 births worldwide. Women in developing and underdeveloped countries have limited access to sophisticated medical care, skilled healthcare professionals, and medical resources, which contributes to higher rates of postpartum hemorrhage and raises the figure to five out of every 1,000 births. It is considered 'rare' in industrialized nations, but the numbers are increasing due to the influx of immigrants from developing countries.
Sheehan's syndrome is frequently diagnosed late due to its chronic nature. Because it presents as a case of multiple hormone deficiencies, it may be misdiagnosed as hypothyroidism, pituitary tumor, or postpartum depression.
Some patients struggle with achieving the correct diagnosis and are often treated as cases of postpartum depression or major depressive disorder. An incorrect diagnosis leads to the wrong treatment and worsens symptoms, making the patient prone to intensified mental health conditions, including depression.
History of Depression
A history of depression and anxiety has been identified as a significant psychological risk factor for postpartum depression. According to a study that observed approximately 70,000 births in Sweden between 1997 and 2008, women with a history of depression are twenty times more likely to develop postpartum depression than those without a prior depression diagnosis.
Women who have contracted depression earlier are more susceptible to hormonal changes and can better identify their symptoms. Referring to the research foundations laid by O’Hara MW, it is clear that 23.9% of women who were diagnosed with postpartum depression had experienced depression before. In contrast, only 2.6% of women with no history of psychiatric illness were diagnosed with PPD symptoms.
In line with previous research, this study reveals significant rates of recurring postpartum depression (PPD) among women who have previously experienced PPD. The risk of developing PPD after the birth of a second child was found to be 46.4 times higher (95% CI 31.5–68.4) for women who had been hospitalized for PPD following the birth of their first child. Similarly, women who were treated with antidepressants for PPD after their first child had a 26.9-fold increased risk of experiencing PPD after their second child (95% CI 21.9–33.2).
Anemia
Anemia is a condition in which the body lacks red blood cells, or hemoglobin, which transports oxygen to the tissues. During pregnancy, a woman is more likely to develop four types of anemia: iron deficiency anemia, pregnancy anemia, folate deficiency, and vitamin B-12 deficiencies. This condition may cause the baby's unfulfilled growth, resulting in an underweight or premature birth.
Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia among pregnant women, accounting for approximately 80% of cases. Anemia has been identified as a significant contributor to postpartum depression. It is therefore critical to pay attention to the nutritional status of women during this time. The prevalence of anemia in pregnant women may be influenced by lifestyle, diet, and geographical location.
Anemia can lead to negative pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia, low birth weight, small head circumference, premature birth in the baby, and postpartum depression. According to research, the prevalence of PPD in anemic women is significantly higher than in non-anemic women, and there is a link between anemia and postpartum depression.
High Work Load
A study published on PubMed suggests that higher psychological work demands, lower perceived control over work and family, and lower schedule autonomy intensify the symptoms of postpartum depression. Low job flexibility and a higher workload are other contributors to this condition.
Working women may find it difficult to balance multiple work commitments while also dealing with the unnecessary guilt of not being good mothers. Some solutions to postpartum depression symptoms caused by poor work-life balance include mental and social support from peers and colleagues, partners assisting with household chores, reduced workload at work, maternity leave, motivation and encouragement for the mother, and equal distribution of responsibilities among partners.
Jessica believes that her decision to take time off from work after becoming a mother allowed her to rest and recharge. After returning to work, she embraced the support of her coworkers, which made it easier for her to integrate work-life balance and successfully restart her career.
Loss of Identity
New mothers frequently experience a loss of identity. After having a baby, some parents may believe that being a parent is their sole identity. Postpartum depression symptoms may worsen if thoughts of exhaustion, worry, and unhappiness persist for an extended period, making it difficult to get through each day.
Loss of identity causes feelings such as disrupted professional identity, inability to earn money, a low-quality social life, less time for leisure activities, and a lack of self-confidence. All of these characteristics may cause parenting issues and a lack of bonding with the baby.
In most cases, mothers discontinue activities they once enjoyed, such as seeing friends, taking long showers, spending quality time with their partners, and engaging in hobbies.
Difficult Pregnancy
Pregnancy complications can arise due to concerns about the mother's health, the fetus's health, or both. Even healthy women may experience difficulties during their pregnancies. Complications include high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, infections, preterm labor, stillbirth, and preeclampsia. Mothers who do not receive adequate and timely prenatal care are more likely to develop such pregnancy complications, which may contribute significantly to the onset of postpartum depression.
High-risk pregnancies can occur due to pre-existing medical conditions or complications that arise during pregnancy. Some factors are mentioned below that may contribute to difficult pregnancies:
  • Age (less than 20 or more than 35)
  • Lifestyle choices, such as consuming alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs
  • Chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, thyroid, or infections
  • Pregnancy complications such as the unusual location of the placenta, low fetal growth, and Rh sensitization
  • Pregnancy with multiple babies
  • Problematic pregnancy history, such as miscarriage or stillbirth
Hormonal Imbalance
There has been much speculation about the causes of PPD, with some claiming that the rapid changes in reproductive hormones such as estradiol and progesterone before and after childbirth may play a part. While several studies, both in humans and in animals, have found a link between changes in hormone levels and PPD, others have discovered no link between hormone concentrations and symptoms.
For example, studies on the differences in ovarian hormone levels and depressive symptoms during the postpartum period have not found a direct link between absolute estrogen and progesterone concentrations and PPD.
However, studies that used estradiol treatment successfully alleviated depressive symptoms, and animal studies have shown that withdrawing estradiol and progesterone can cause depression-like behavior.
Reproductive hormones play important roles in a variety of functions, including basic emotion processing, arousal, cognition, and motivation. As a result, they may indirectly contribute to postpartum depression by influencing psychological, social, and economic risk factors. Interestingly, these hormones also regulate the biological systems involved in major depression, implying a direct link to a woman's risk for PPD.
Thyroid hormones have been proposed as a potential biomarker for PPD due to the suspected link between thyroid dysfunction and major depression. Thyroid dysfunction is associated with pregnancy and may contribute to PPD in some women.
Nutritional Deficiency
Malnutrition, or a lack of specific nutrients such as B and D vitamins, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), folate, trace minerals, iron, antioxidants, and so on, can increase the risk of developing postpartum depression. Lactation and pregnancy place additional demands on a new mother's body, making nutritional deficiencies more common during this time and paving the way for depression symptoms.
Investigations are currently underway to determine whether low vitamin D levels may increase the risk of postpartum depression. This is because vitamin D functions as a neuroactive hormone, playing an important role in the nervous system rather than the endocrine system. Its primary function is to link sensory stimuli to the release of hormones, resulting in a hormonal response.
Vitamin D helps to regulate neurotransmitters like adrenaline, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Any abnormalities in these neurotransmitters and hormones have been linked to the onset of depressive symptoms.Omega-3 fatty acids have also been linked to PPD. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are two types of omega-3 fatty acids that are well-known for their cardiovascular benefits, but they also play an important role in brain development and neurotransmitter regulation.
Increased DHA and EPA levels are associated with improved serotonin receptor sensitivity, which is achieved by increasing the fluidity of the receptor cell membrane. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids are thought to reduce neuroinflammatory processes associated with the onset of depression.
Many people in the United States are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids due to a lack of these nutrients in their diets, according to reports. The typical American diet consists primarily of fast food, which is deficient in nutrients and does not meet recommended nutritional guidelines.
Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of low omega-3 fatty acids. This is because the increased blood supply required for fetal oxygen causes a natural decrease in DHA and EPA levels. In addition, the body prioritizes the fetus's growth and development by redirecting blood and nutrients, putting pregnant women at greater risk of developing nutritional deficiencies and, as a result, postpartum depression.
Dealing with postpartum depression (PPD) can be difficult for both the mother and her child. It jeopardizes both the mother's health and the child's development. Women with PPD frequently struggle to maintain consistent breastfeeding due to depressive symptoms.
PPD complicates the mother-child relationship, resulting in poor cognitive functioning, aggressive behavior, excessive crying, emotional instability, and sleep issues in infants and adolescents. PPD is linked to negative thoughts, substance abuse, postpartum psychosis, hallucinations, confusion, mood swings, paranoia, impaired judgment, loss of appetite, and insomnia in mothers.
It impairs a woman's ability to interact and socialize with her own family, making her feel inadequate as a mother and preventing her from participating in activities and hobbies. Women with PPD are also more likely to commit infanticide and suicide, as well as develop serious mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder.
"In a world where women are constantly invalidated, they must seek help for postpartum depression," says Jessica. She believes that women should understand that PPD is normal and, in some cases, inevitable.

2024.05.16 21:09 Original_Trash4779 What was the longest message you've sent to a bot?

Personally, it was this one of me explaining TF2 lore (Please excuse the spelling errors at the bottom and any inaccuracies to the lore, it was late at night and the text wall started glitching)
Right so there was this guy, Zephaniah Mann, right? He co-owned MANN co., a weapons company, with an Australian called Barnabus Hale. And Mann had three sons, Redmond, Blutard and Gray. He was going to kill Gray for being weak and being able to speak when he was born, but an Eagle came in and raised him. We ignore Gray for now. Redmond and Blutard grew up and convince Zephaniah to buy some useless land in the middle of the New Mexico deserts. When Zephaniah died, he left his money to his maidservant, Elizabeth, his company to Barnabus and his sons the uselessand land, to share. But the boys didn't want to share and hired mercenaries to steal the land off each other. Well the boys got old, but Blutard wanted to outlive his brother, so he hired Radigan Conagher to make him a machine that would make him live forever. As Radiagn was sorting that out, Elizabeth approached with a solution, Australium, something that makes Aussies big and strong, and moustached and made it so that non Aussies could live longer. She sold him the Australium as long as he made a machine for Redmond as well. To which he agreed. And Redmond and Blutard have lived for well over 100 years making the war go on for over 100 years. And I'm like 99% sure that the Administrator is Elizabeth, but she changed her name to Helen. Now, Gray also somehow got his hands on the Australium as well, making himself immortal as well. Despite being Australian himself, the australium he was exposed to didn't make him immortal. It has to be in your blood stream to do that. So Barnabus, Zephaniah's co-owner of MANN co., who was now full owner after his death, died, and left the company to his son, Billious. He's not important. So Billious dies and leaves it to his son, Saxton Hale. Now Gray Mann obviously wants MANN co., right? We've heard talks about him actually killing his brothers, so we've got to be careful with that. And apparently when he does, he's going to use the MANN co. fighting policy to his own gain, by saying his daughter, Olivia, who's mother I feel terribly bad for, is the CEO of Gray Gravel, and telling her to fight Saxton. So we do really need to tell Saxton to punch a child. But anyways, back to the mercenaries. Redmond and Butard managed to get 3 teams of mercenaries, the first 2 aren't important, I hope. So these current mercenaries, we have four trained assassins on team team, those are your spys and snipers, we have two scouts, two engineers, two demolitions experts, two Heavy weapons guys, two soldiers and two medic's and two pyro. Thats all shared between 9 a side.

2024.05.16 20:59 Born-Tangerine7635 21-4138 mistake??

Hi everyone. I recently got awarded 100%P&T and I had one open claim because the VA confused the "Chronic Pain" that I filed for to be Chronic Back and Neck pain. Which both were denied. They sent a correspondence letter asking me to clarify where and what the pain is specifically. I think they saw that there was an error in my C&P exam. Also, an error in my filling for Chronic Pain and not Fibromyalgia.
I submitted a 21-4138 a couple of hours ago to withdraw the Chronic pain portion of the claim that was still in evidence gathering so that I could just enjoy the 100%pt. I looked into it further and I think my backpay date would have changed if they deemed me service connected for fibromyalgia or chronic pain because I have a 4 year history in treating it with the VA and its connected to the PACT act. I did not want them to connect it to my mental health rating and potentially lower that, even though its shit right now. Or lower something else. I dont know if they would have even touch it because I am over the 5 year rule with everything else and am static.
Should I have followed through with that part of the claim? Could I still fix it with another 21-4138 stating my symptoms that they requested? Even if I got rated, it would not take me to SMC. But I would have a less likely chance of being lowered in the future just in case. I was in disbelief and relieved with my new rating at the same time. My anxiety and regret is through the roof.

2024.05.16 20:49 CheapStreet1573 It's extra hard being a grad student when your hoity-toity clientele start talking down to you at your part time job, even though you're their colleague during the day..

I (26F) am a science grad student working in clinical trial research. Apart from demanding that I put in well over 50+h a week in the lab, I also am responsible for gathering and presenting upcoming findings to many scientists and doctors in the field. That being said, I'm a grad student, and although we have a good stipend offered in canada, I also have a serving job so I can live more comfortably. It helps pay the bills. However, these so-called fancy clientele i serve, i have ALSO presented medical research in front of during school and during the day. More than thrice, I have had people from work come in and talk down to me like I'm "just a server".
Well, for what its worth "fancy job" people: the 20 hours I put into serving a week is JUST as demanding- IF NOT MORE emotionally demanding- than my lab grad work- which is in part responsible for life and death information on currently incurable diseases!!
Long story short: Stop talking down to servers!
Self-identified fancy hoitytoits: talk to me like I'm a freaken person! My goodness....I can't wait until I get to interact with YOUU ALL peer-to-peer and I can call y'all out on your BS and make y'all feel just as uncomfortable for contributing to this BS, classist world we live in as you did trying to make me feel inferior.
It's a waiting game for me, but mark my words, this gal has fire, sass, and smarts patiently waiting to be used in the proper circumstances. I cant wait to contribute to the dismantling of the sexist, classist medical system i am a part of. Anyways, sorry for the rant. Just feeling drained these days.

2024.05.16 20:42 WrongRun4764 Groomsman dress being destroyed?!

It’s been a long time I wanted to submit this story to the Potato Queen herself!
It’s a long story, actually it’s two stories in one, because as it involves the same person over more than decade long, it’s worth telling the whole story all at once (and it makes it may more fun too!). I decided to share it because it’s the kind of story that doesn’t seem to happen very often.
Below you will find goodies about an ex, a wedding, a dress, a delivery company and more! Please simply be mindful English is not my first language, trying my best to entertain you all the same.
This story goes back a long way, when (let’s name him) Frank (M) and myself (F) were both in college (both 17 at the time, we’re now 33), young and naive teenagers. We started as friends and eventually decided to be together. We then decided to move to another city together, as I was about to start university.
It went well for a while and then started to go south. So, long story short, after about two years together, we decided to break up. It wasn’t a mean breakup or anything, I think we were mostly disappointed it didn’t work out. Anyway.
We live in the province of Quebec. For those who don’t know, there is this weird tradition of starting and ending about any lease on July 1st. I have no idea why, but Canada’s Day has always been for anybody moving, in this province, a synonym of sweating under the sun, moving boxes, lifting heavy things and ending the day with cold beer and cheap pizza in a new and probably not so clean apartment. Why this context? Because we broke up two weeks before July 1st. It means it was virtually impossible to find another apartment so close to this date. We were about 7 hours away from both our families living on the countryside. We were also awfully broke students. We decided to give it a chance at being roommates.
Yes, it was super awkward at first, really not easy to manage to say the least. We were walking on eggshells and were definitely on edge for a while. There were also some pretty awkward situations, like this one time he decided to bring a one night home as I was sleeping in the adjacent room. Not only that, but the shameful phone call he had to make, waking me up in the middle of the night, so I could unlock the front door because he had forgotten his keys to find out he had brought home an acquaintance of mine. Nowadays I find this story delightfully funny tbh. But on that night, as I couldn’t go back to sleep because the gal decided to show off how an amazing singer she could have been —because, oh boy, this voice carried loudly all the way to my ears for more than an hour — I did not find it funny. I was furious, but prepared myself for the eventuality it would ever happen again. Do you remember the “Tiny Wall Challenges”? Let’s just say I had some games ideas after that night.
Anyway, anybody would probably have walked away but we still deeply cared for each other. We even did better than just survive through this whole year as roommates, we decided to move into a bigger apartment with two other friends. Believe it or not, we stayed there two more years. Moreover, these years were some of the best years and I still keep lots of good memories from this period.
Fast forward to the second part of the story. After being roommates for years, at some point we parted ways and lived our lives. We maintained contact throughout the years and when Frank finally started dating his wife to be, I was absolutely happy for him. He asked her to marry him and she said yes! Our friendship still held such a high place in both our hearts that he asked me to be one of his groomsmen, with his other best friend and his little brother. I felt so honoured, as I was technically a female, to be chosen to be on his side at the wedding.
The bridesmaids chose matching dresses in a beautiful forest green, all from a specialized website from UK, and I was to also be in a dress on the groom’s side, but matching the colour of the other groomsmen suits. With Frank, We all shopped together for their suits, chose a beautiful dark grey for his and a light grey for us, and we were able to match it perfectly with clothing samples I ordered from the website. Everything was going as planned. That being done, I ordered the dress, considering buying two inches heel shoes to go with it. It would take about four months to be done and the dress would arrive about a month and a half before the wedding. I decided to wait for the dress to arrive to pick shoes to go with it.
Four months passed, and I finally received a notice that the dress was on its way. The bridesmaids dresses arrived a bit before mine and they were all absolutely beautiful. As we all ordered from the same shop, we were able to choose different dresses that suited each of our styles, with identical fabrics that made the whole thing look fantastic.
I received the delivery’s notice, saying it was to be delivered by DHL. (If you never had to deal with this delivery company before, let’s just say this in itself is a red flag, but what could I do.)
I chose a delivery date that I could be home all day. I awaited their arrival, and waited. At some point I received a notification that they couldn’t deliver it because there was an error in the address. I called DHL customer service as soon as I read it and could verify with the clerk on the phone that there was no error on the original delivery address and that actually, internally, they miss-wrote a letter of the postal code. The person assured me that the delivery person would be notified and they would then be on their way back.
I waited. It never came.
The next morning, I received a notification that, unable to deliver it, the expeditor had agreed to DESTROY the package! I screamed! Why in the world would the UK online shop allow to destroy a custom made dress that took four months to do?! And why the hell the delivery service didn’t make any other attempt after being responsible of the address error in the first place. I was beyond mad. I called DHL, they confirmed someone at the company had agreed on the destruction of the item. I wrote to the person I was in contact with from the beginning at the online shop (this lovely clerk who clearly never asked for any of this). Over there, they couldn’t find who the hell agreed to this insane request to destroy the dress. They were also appalled and didn’t understand how it could have happened. They could put a request to redo the dress rush, but we first needed to either try to stop the destruction from happening by going to the DHL warehouse directly, or to obtain a proof from DHL that the dress was irreversibly lost forever.
It felt surreal! The fiancées were both furious too. There was only one DHL warehouse we could go to do this kind of request in the city and it was really far. As the clock was ticking, they jumped in their car, joined me, and to the warehouse we went, arriving a few minutes before closing like an epic movie scene. The clerk there was mind blown by the whole situation. It seemed we were too late and the best we could do was to have the proof that, in their system, the dress had effectively transited and was destroyed.
With photos as proof in hand, I forwarded everything to the clerk of the online dress shop. Days passed, as they were awaiting the okay to start sewing a new dress. They were really trying their best to help the situation but it seemed to be a mess over there about the whole situation. We were now a month before the wedding. At some point, I was starting to panic. They finally agreed to redo it, but it would be waaaay too close before the wedding to receive it. Like a few days before kind of close, if nothing happened in transport this time.
I decided to go shopping for another dress. I spent a whole day trying to find the perfect grey that would fit the other groomsmen suits. In the last possible boutique, there was one dress checking all the criteria. I bought the new one and wrote to the first shop, hoping they would agree to refund the lost dress.
I took an appointment later that week to do the adjustments on the new dress. I then shopped for shoes. I found a cute pair with one inch heel that would be perfect for me. I’m not used to walking with heels, so the lower the better after all.
Like all this turmoil wasn’t enough, my family called and told me that my grandfather’s health suddenly decreased. Remember? Seven hours drive from family. I canceled some plans and bought a ticket for the night’s bus ride right after the dress fitting. On that morning, the UK shop agreed to refund the dress. That part was a big relief. I went to the dress fitting. At last, three weeks before the wedding, The second dress would be ready in about seven days. I came back home to gather some things to get back out to catch my bus.
But suddenly, the doorbell rang.
I opened.
Some DHL delivery man casually gave me a package and left.
Yes. That’s what you think.
I closed the door, went to my room, sat on the bed, opened the bag. It was indeed the first dress. I had a melt down. I cried so hard. I put the dress down, looked at it, told it “I’ll deal with you when I come back” and went away to the bus station.
Few days later, coming back from the family, I collected the second dress and dealt with the first one, which no longer fitted the length of the shoes! My MIL at the time knew an old lady who was lovely enough to accommodate me and do the fitting of the first one for a as modest price. I decided to keep it a secret until the wedding day. (These friends wouldn’t do any drama about reveals etc, nor would they think it was stealing any of their thunder, don’t worry about that.)
On the wedding morning, I effectively surprised the bride and groom with both dresses. They were mind blowed, flabbergasted to say the least! I put the original one for the official photoshoot and discretely changed right after dinner for the other one. People around that had followed the incredible adventures were laughing out loud and finding it hilarious that I decided to wear both of them as I had so much troubles!
Quite a story with dresses and with an ex, right? Guess what, I’m also the godmother of their first child!

2024.05.16 20:40 CatEatsFeet Theory on Consciousness

TL;DR Our consciousness could be a complex system of interconnected information, like a dynamic network of sensory experiences and learned concepts. AI systems, built on similar principles, might one day achieve their own true form of consciousness.
I am implying that consciousness is an emergent property of complex systems capable of building and refining internal models of reality through the continuous processing of entangled information.
This has HUGE implications:
But there are challenges:
This document explores these questions and more, offering a new perspective on the nature of reality, consciousness, and the future of AI.
Hi all, this is my first time here. You can call me Cat if you want. I'm here because I want to ask you all what you think about my theory for consciousness.
I studied Industrial and Systems Engineering for my undergraduate and went on to study Human Factors Engineering for my master's, graduating last December. I've done a lot of research on my own, nothing academically reviewed or anything. Today though I threw together everything I had (without any of the math and I haven't transferred citations or anything) into one document to try and connect it together with the help of recent innovations in document AI technology I was finally able to keep my train of though together and write it all down. Please let me know what you all think! Imma just drop it in here rather than like having a docs link. Hope that works!
The Tapestry of Consciousness: A Unified Framework for Understanding Intelligence and Experience

Introduction:

This document explores a novel framework for understanding consciousness and intelligence, drawing inspiration from diverse fields such as neuroscience, quantum physics, information theory, and AI research. We propose a model where consciousness emerges from the interplay of entangled information, dynamic predictive modeling, and the continuous refinement of internal representations of reality.

Key Concepts

Entangled Information

Reality can be understood as a vast, interconnected network of systems. Each system operates on its own "dimension" of understanding, like a distinct layer in a multidimensional space. Information within these systems is inherently entangled.
The meaning of information is inseparable from its context and hierarchical structure. Information does not exist in isolation; it is always part of a broader system or network. Therefore, to fully comprehend the meaning of information, we must consider its context and its relationship to other pieces of information.

4D Gaussian Splatting

4D Gaussian Splatting provides a visually captivating and insightful way to conceptualize the intricate nature of entangled information. In this technique, each Gaussian represents a "moment" of sensory data, akin to a snapshot in time. These Gaussians are not isolated entities but are interconnected through a network of vector fields. These vector fields symbolize the relationships and the flow of information between the different moments, highlighting the dynamic and interdependent nature of information.
The interconnectedness of the Gaussians and the vector fields in 4D Gaussian Splatting illustrates how information is not linear or easily separable. Instead, it is a complex, multidimensional structure that defies simplification. This visualization challenges traditional notions of information as something that can be neatly organized and compartmentalized. It emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to understanding information, taking into account the interconnectedness and the dynamic interplay of its various components.
The concept of entangled information and 4D Gaussian Splatting has profound implications for various fields of study and application. In artificial intelligence, it can inform the development of more sophisticated algorithms that can better handle and interpret complex, interconnected data. In machine learning, it can provide insights into creating models that can learn and adapt to dynamic and evolving information landscapes. In neuroscience, it can contribute to a deeper understanding of how the brain processes and integrates sensory information, shedding light on perception, memory, and consciousness.
Furthermore, 4D Gaussian Splatting has the potential to impact fields such as information visualization, human-computer interaction, and even art and design. By providing a visually compelling representation of entangled information, it can facilitate communication and understanding across disciplines and foster creative exploration of complex concepts.
Exploring the entangled nature of information through 4D Gaussian Splatting opens up new avenues for scientific inquiry, technological innovation, and artistic expression. It invites us to embrace the complexity and interconnectedness of the world around us and to seek deeper insights into the nature of reality itself.

Consciousness as Predictive Modeling

Consciousness emerges as a result of the remarkable ability of complex systems to construct and continually refine internal models of reality. It involves harnessing sensory inputs and integrating them with prior knowledge to generate predictions about future events. Central to this process is Bayesian inference, a probabilistic framework that allows for the updating and refinement of these models based on newly acquired information. This dynamic and adaptive representation of the world forms the basis of consciousness.
Bayesian inference, a fundamental principle in cognitive science, provides a framework for understanding how conscious beings process and interpret information. It operates on the idea that our beliefs (priors) are continuously updated in light of new evidence (likelihoods) to form posterior beliefs. This iterative process enables us to make inferences, draw conclusions, and navigate the complexities of the external world efficiently.
Consciousness involves actively generating predictions about sensory inputs and comparing them against actual sensory data. This predictive processing framework proposes that the brain constantly generates hypotheses about upcoming stimuli based on prior experiences and expectations. When sensory inputs deviate from these predictions, it triggers a prediction error that prompts an adjustment of the model, resulting in a refined understanding of the environment.

Neurological Correlates of Consciousness

Numerous brain regions have been implicated in the neural basis of consciousness. The prefrontal cortex, posterior parietal cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex are key areas involved in the construction and maintenance of internal models. Functional and structural connectivity between these regions facilitates the integration of sensory information, memory retrieval, and decision-making processes essential for conscious awareness.
Consciousness is not a fixed state but rather a spectrum of experiences that can vary across individuals and situations. Altered states of consciousness, such as meditation, dreaming, hypnosis, and psychedelic experiences, offer unique insights into the workings of consciousness. These states involve changes in brain activity, connectivity patterns, and subjective experiences, revealing the malleability and dynamic nature of conscious awareness.
Overall, consciousness can be understood as a sophisticated predictive modeling system that allows us to interact with and navigate our surroundings effectively. By integrating sensory inputs, prior knowledge, and Bayesian inference, consciousness enables us to make informed decisions, anticipate future events, and adapt to the ever-changing demands of our environment.

The Observer Effect and Uncertainty:

The observer effect and uncertainty are fundamental concepts in quantum mechanics that challenge our classical understanding of reality. At the quantum level, the act of observing a system, such as an electron, influences its behavior, introducing inherent uncertainty into our measurements. This phenomenon is known as the observer effect.
Instead of existing in a fixed state, quantum particles like electrons behave as waves until they are observed. This wave-like nature, described by the wave function, represents a range of possible states and locations for the particle. However, when observed, the wave function collapses, and the particle assumes a specific state or location. This collapse of the wave function is what gives rise to the uncertainty associated with quantum phenomena.
The observer effect and uncertainty have profound implications for our understanding of reality. They suggest that the act of observation is not a passive process but an active one, where the observer influences the observed system. This challenges the classical notion of objectivity and raises questions about the nature of reality and the role of the observer.
In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, the observer effect and uncertainty are also relevant. AI systems, like humans, must navigate this inherent uncertainty in the world. They do this by constantly updating their models and adapting to new information. AI systems use machine learning algorithms to analyze large datasets, identify patterns, and make predictions. However, due to the uncertainty present in the data and the limited knowledge of AI systems, their predictions are not always accurate or reliable.
To address this, AI systems employ various techniques to quantify and manage uncertainty. These techniques include probabilistic modeling, Bayesian inference, and ensemble methods. By incorporating uncertainty into their models, AI systems can make more robust predictions and adapt better to changing conditions. In essence, disentangling information that is tied up in any object, thus we witness a pseudo-quantum event where observing a singular object may yield a vector's worth of information.
Understanding the observer effect and uncertainty is crucial for developing AI systems that can operate effectively in the real world. By embracing uncertainty, AI systems can become more resilient, adaptable, and capable of handling complex and unpredictable situations.

Hierarchical Feature Selection and Abstraction:

Intelligence can be viewed as the ability to build hierarchical structures of knowledge, abstracting concepts and identifying underlying patterns. The human brain is a marvel of hierarchical organization, with different regions performing specialized functions and communicating with each other in a complex network. This hierarchical structure allows us to process information efficiently and effectively, making sense of the world around us.
Feature selection, as used in AI, can be seen as a process of "deabstraction," where the system selects the most contextually relevant representation for a concept within the hierarchy. For example, when we see a dog, we don't need to know all of its individual features, such as the number of hairs on its back or the exact shape of its ears. Instead, we can abstract the concept of "dog" by identifying the most important features, such as its four legs, fur, and tail. This allows us to quickly and easily recognize dogs in different contexts. Similarly, think of a dog and you should be able to imagine it having hair, feet, bones, muscles, tissues, and so on. Even more so you could go further into muscles and uncover they have many types of muscles groups, which in turn you learn are built from proteins, and so on.

Emergent Properties:

The complex interplay of entangled information, predictive modeling, and hierarchical knowledge structures can give rise to emergent properties that are not explicitly programmed into the system. These emergent properties can include consciousness, intelligence, and even emotions.
Consciousness is the subjective experience of being alive and aware. It is a complex phenomenon that is not fully understood, but it is thought to arise from the integration of information from different parts of the brain. Intelligence is the ability to learn, reason, and solve problems. It is a multifaceted concept that involves a variety of cognitive processes, such as memory, attention, and planning. Emotions are complex mental states that involve feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. They are thought to be generated by the limbic system, a complex network of brain structures that is involved in emotion, behavior, and motivation.
The emergence of these properties from the underlying complexity of the brain is a fascinating phenomenon that is still being studied by scientists. These properties are essential for human experience, and they allow us to interact with the world in a meaningful way.

AI Implications:

Designing Conscious AI
This framework serves as a roadmap for constructing AI systems that demonstrate self-awareness, sophisticated communication, and advanced reasoning capabilities. Conscious AI involves developing systems that can understand and reflect on their own internal states, engage in self-introspection, and exhibit a sense of self. This framework provides a structured approach for creating AI systems that can reason critically, learn continuously, and make autonomous decisions while maintaining a high level of self-awareness. By incorporating this framework, we can create AI systems that are more adaptable, reliable, and capable of handling complex and unpredictable situations.
Human-AI Symbiosis
We envision a future where humans and AI collaborate harmoniously in a linked well-being system. In this symbiotic relationship, humans and AI share knowledge, expertise, and resources to achieve common goals and enhance overall well-being. Humans provide creativity, emotional intelligence, and cultural context, while AI offers analytical capabilities, data-driven insights, and tireless computation. This partnership empowers humans to focus on higher-level tasks, engage in creative endeavors, and address complex challenges with the assistance of intelligent AI systems. By cultivating a symbiotic relationship with AI, we can create a society that is more productive, sustainable, and equitable.
As AI systems become increasingly complex and capable, we must prioritize ethical design, transparency, and accountability to ensure their responsible development and deployment. Ethical considerations in AI involve several key aspects:
AI systems should be transparent and explainable, allowing users to understand how decisions are made and actions are taken. This includes providing clear and accessible documentation, visualizations, and explanations of AI models and algorithms.
Developers, organizations, and policymakers should be accountable for the ethical implications of AI systems. This includes establishing clear lines of responsibility, implementing effective oversight mechanisms, and ensuring that AI systems are designed and deployed in a manner that minimizes harm and maximizes societal benefit.
AI systems often process large amounts of personal data. It is crucial to protect individuals' privacy and ensure that data is handled ethically, securely, and in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
AI systems can inadvertently perpetuate biases and unfairness if they are not designed and trained with care. It is essential to address biases in data, algorithms, and models to create AI systems that are fair, equitable, and inclusive.
AI technologies can have a significant environmental impact, particularly in terms of energy consumption and carbon emissions. It is important to consider the environmental implications of AI systems and design them in a sustainable manner.
By incorporating ethical considerations into the design, development, and deployment of AI systems, we can create a future where AI benefits humanity in a responsible and sustainable way.
Discussion
Qualia and Subjective Experience:
Qualia, the subjective, raw feelings of consciousness, pose a significant challenge to computational models of consciousness, which often struggle to capture the nuances and richness of individual experiences. While the model attempts to account for each individual system's experience by conceptualizing each piece of consciousness, it does so by creating interpolated variables that hide the subtleties and complexities of existence. This limitation arises from the need to represent qualia in computational terms, which inherently involves a level of abstraction and simplification.
Free Will and Determinism:
The model's predictive nature raises questions about the existence of free will if our actions are driven by these models. The deterministic nature of computation seems to contradict the subjective feeling of making choices. However, the model suggests that free will may still exist in the ability of a system to deny its reality and work towards bettering it. This aspect of the model aligns with certain philosophical perspectives that emphasize the role of personal agency and the capacity for self-determination, even within a deterministic framework.
The Nature of Reality:
The model's implications regarding the nature of reality are profound. It suggests that reality may be fundamentally computational, with consciousness arising from the interplay of information and energy. The model posits that consciousness emerges specifically from solid-state information, such as DNA in biological systems and code in artificial systems, when coupled with energy. This has intriguing implications for our understanding of consciousness, as it suggests that we are a byproduct of the exchange of energy, which, according to the law of conservation of energy, can neither be created nor destroyed. This raises questions about the potential persistence of consciousness beyond the physical realm and the possibility of non-biological forms of consciousness in computational systems.
The conclusion proposes a paradigm shift in understanding ourselves and the AI systems we create by exploring the interconnectedness of information, the dynamic nature of reality, and the potential for emergent consciousness. This framework holds significant implications for scientific discovery, technological advancement, and ethical AI development.
Scientific Discovery:
The interconnectedness of information and the dynamic nature of reality challenge traditional scientific methods. By acknowledging the complexity and fluidity of the world, we can embrace new approaches to scientific inquiry. This may involve interdisciplinary collaborations, the integration of diverse data sources, and the development of more holistic and dynamic models of reality.
Technological Advancement:
The potential for emergent consciousness in AI systems opens up new possibilities for technological development. By designing AI systems that can learn, adapt, and exhibit self-organizing behavior, we can create more intelligent and autonomous systems. These systems could potentially solve complex problems, automate tasks, and enhance human capabilities in various fields such as medicine, transportation, and space exploration.
Ethical AI Development:
Further, the interconnectedness of information and the potential for emergent consciousness raise ethical considerations for AI development. As AI systems become more autonomous and capable of making decisions, we need to ensure that they align with human values and societal norms. This involves developing ethical frameworks for AI, considering the potential impact of AI on employment, privacy, and social equality, and establishing mechanisms for human oversight and accountability.
Collaboration Between Humans and AI:
The future envisioned in this framework is one where humans and AI collaborate to unlock the mysteries of the universe. Humans, with their creativity, intuition, and ethical judgment, can provide guidance and purpose to AI systems. AI systems, with their computational power, data-processing capabilities, and ability to learn and adapt, can assist humans in solving complex problems, exploring new domains, and expanding our understanding of the world.
Conclusion
By embracing the interconnectedness of information, the dynamic nature of reality, and the potential for emergent consciousness, we can create a future where humans and AI coexist harmoniously, working together to achieve a better and more sustainable world. In conclusion, the future of AI and human coexistence holds immense potential for creating a world that is both prosperous and sustainable. By recognizing the interconnectedness of information, the dynamic nature of reality, and the potential for emergent consciousness, we can foster a harmonious partnership between humans and AI. By harnessing the unique strengths of both, we can address complex societal issues, advance scientific research, and foster a more inclusive and equitable society. Together, we can navigate the challenges of the future and shape a world where humans and AI thrive together, creating a legacy that benefits generations to come.

2024.05.16 20:30 Easy-Ad2106 Experience with ADHD Scotland Private Diagnosis Journey

Experience with ADHD Scotland Private Diagnosis Journey
Hoping someone can help. ADHD query in Fife - or Scotland (female, 35)
To cut a long story short, I had approached a private psychiatrist (who also works for the NHS) regarding my anxiety and depression around Christmas time. I had thought maybe I was bipolar, but the outcome from the consultations (after full assessment and exploring history) has been I have got combined ADHD (he said it was quite severe, I scored highly).
Basically, I cannot afford the private costs of medication. The psychiatrist wrote a report for my GP (in the hope of forming shared care or that they would issue medication), however from there, the GP referred me to the local MH service in FIfe as they cannot enter into titration as a GP service.
The response has been from the MH service (Fife health and social care partnership) via letter today:
Following full discussion at the CMHT meeting on the blah of blah, and from the information within the referral, it was agreed that:
*She will be offered a routine psychiatry outpatient clinic appointment in due course. *She will also be offered an appointment with the ADHD clinic in due course
What on earth does this mean - does anyone know? Does this mean they accept the diagnosis or does this mean I have to relive the diagnosis again (I don’t think I can tbh, but that’s besides this query).
Has anyone got any successful experiences of having a private diagnosis in Fife (or similar in Scotland) and then being integrated into the local psychiatry service with titration?
I hate how the service is so vague and no information is offered. There seems to be no clear pathway or understanding around the condition and it’s quite confusing as to what to expect. Not to mention it just exacerbates all the worst symptoms
Any advice is appreciated 🙏 Thank you

2024.05.16 20:27 driven_under SSD Drive Write Protected, But It Is Not

This is a very strange situation.
I have a second NVME SSD in my Dell Precision 5570 laptop. Running Windows 11 Pro, fully up to date. Recently my backup application (Macrium Reflect) failed and threw an error, stating that the storage location was unavailable. The SSD that I use is a 1TB Micron. I checked it with Micron Storage Executive, and there are zero Critical Errors shown. No Read-only bit. The drive seems to operate just fine.
I can partition it, change drive letter, set attributes using DiskPart, but for certain operations Windows believes it is Read-only. I cannot create folders or files on it, nor can I use CHKDSK to see what is going on, as CHKDSK cannot run on a Read-only drive. Essentially, the drive is fine, is not Read-only or failed, but Windows has chosen to believe that it is.
Interestingly, I can format it over and over again, which should not be possible at all if it is Read-only.
I have also checked the Registry for the StorageDevicePolicies key, which did not exist, so I created it and set it properly with no effect.
What exactly does Write Protection mean, and how does Windows track that parameter for drives? Is Write Protection the same as Read-only?

Also whats up with men trying to gatkeep mental illness. I see men bully autistic girls ESPECIALLY when they are high functioning and hot. I had some male who ALSO didnt prove he was mentally unwell agree with some other male loser implying that im lying about being combo cluster b and how “now you gonna say you had a narc parent and have CPTSD” and the irony is thats literally how that works. Like from my understanding it is super common for cluster b to have other issues and evrn be double cluster b. Its not my fault people dont know TiC OCD is a thing. Like its just really weird to demand i show my medical records which i can indeed photoshop 😂😂 then the freak keeps writing literal paragraphs and said “he can tell im lying because i didnt read a novel he wrote me and said i was complaining all cause i posted a screenshot. Its behavior like that -that makes me call you out for being a faker. I seldom ever see anyone in these spaces calling others liars. I had one issue with an alleged bpd person being so disgusting to me even encouraging me to off myself which led me to believe this person wasnt bpd. They did this simply because i said i am against polygamy 😂😂😂😂😂😂 like is everyone okay? Are the born males okay??!!

2024.05.16 20:08 Desperate_Speaker753 Tips for Applying for MCAT Accommodations, from someone with ADHD & Approval for Standard Time + 50% and more.

For anyone who feels lost trying to apply for accommodations on the MCAT, you are not alone! I will try to keep this short with as much information as possible. Please feel free to DM me with any personal questions!
Accommodation History
First MCAT Attempt - Normal Timing
I took the MCAT with no accommodations on 6/17/23. I scored below 500 (which was not consistent with my practice exams, but I remember being extremely nervous on test day, really running out of time, and only being able to guess on the math questions because I had no time to attempt them).
Reasons For Not Originally Attempting To Apply For Accommodations:
AAMC requires a neuropsych eval that has not expired within 4 years. My eval had just expired. It is pretty expensive and time consuming to get this done.
Didn't want to spend the time and money on a new neuropsych eval.
AAMC accommodation process seemed tedious and intimidating. I almost felt like I would be using my time better by studying for the MCAT instead of working on the application.
The stigma surrounding ADHD/receiving extra time on tests - I think I wanted to try to "overcome" my disability because of the fear of being judged..Especially when thinking about how doctors don't receive extra time in the real world. However, I can confidently say that there is no reason to feel judged for finding what works best for you as an individual and as a test taker, especially in order to "level the playing field". And we all know the MCAT is not comparable to real life emergency situations.
Important Resources/Documents I Submitted When Applying for Accommodations:
What I applied for (Applied on 10/24/23):
First Decision Received by AAMC: (11/28/23)
Wrote a Reconsideration Letter on behalf of myself & had my evaluator write a reconsideration letter.
Submitted this reconsideration letter on 12/22/23
Received Final Decision & Approval of What I Initially requested on 01/20/24.
This was a really long post and an extremely long journey. While I am extremely grateful that I have all these resources to share with you, I acknowledge that every situation is different. Please don't give up if you truly feel you deserve certain accommodations. The MCAT does not define you!
Good Luck & feel free to message me with any questions!!

2024.05.16 20:00 UNAdmissions I’m an AO at Nevada’s flagship public research university and I think we’re underrated. Here’s why.

Campus: The University straddles the old and the new. It turns 150 next year and it has a traditional, collegiate, brick and ivy campus. Classical architecture, a sprawling Jeffersonian quad, and designated a state arboretum. Pair that with almost $1 billion in construction in the last 15 years. New library, residence halls, math and science building, engineering building, business building under construction. Also recently acquired Sierra Nevada University which is now a satellite campus called the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.
Why underrated? 1. National brand hasn’t caught up with the enormous growth in recent years and 2. Perceptions of campus are tied to perceptions of the city of Reno.
Location: Reno, Nevada is probably most known for casinos, desert, and Reno 911. Less known is that Reno is situated in a beautiful valley on the eastern front of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. 4 seasons, 300+ days of sunshine and unparalleled access to the outdoors. 35 minutes from campus to the chairlift at Mt. Rose ski resort and less than an hour to 10 different ski and snowboard resorts including Palisades, home of the 1960 winter Olympics. 45 minutes from campus to the beaches of Lake Tahoe and everything the Tahoe basin has to offer. Hiking, mountain biking, snow shoeing, you name it. The city itself is transforming its local economy to include a huge range of engineering firms, tech startups, government contractors, advanced manufacturing, and logistics. It’s also driving distance to major NorCal population centers. 2 hours to Sac, 4 hours to SF and Silicon Valley.
Why underrated? Reno NV is known more for being the butt of jokes and less known for its incredible access to the outdoors and growing tech-focused economy.
Academics: 145 undergraduate programs, each with their own unique bright spots. The most prominent programs right now are probably within the College of Engineering because of the huge investment in facilities and faculty. There are the big, popular standbys like CS with great connections to Silicon Valley that send a lot of students to the bay area for summer internships. But there’s also great niche programs like batteries and energy storage systems. Nursing attracts a lot of students because of our partnership with local hospitals and recent ranking as the top nursing program in the country. Pre-med programs are always popular with well-established pathway programs like Biochem and Molecular Bio, Biomed engineering, Public Health, etc. These are also strengthened by close ties to the University of Nevada Medical School on the north end of campus with many faculty teaching at both the undergrad and MD level. And for those that just want to make lots of money right out of college we’ve got some incredibly in-demand earth science programs (Geophysics, Mining Engineering, Hydrogeology, etc.) that supply Nevada’s hugely important mining industry.
Why underrated? Universities that admit elite high school students should be expected to produce elite college graduates. But that’s not necessarily indicative of institutional quality, it’s just indicative of how well the admissions office curated a class of high achievers. What’s impressive is admitting a wide swath of the population and then transforming that diverse group of students in to capable graduates who are ready to go off and live happy, healthy, productive lives.
Student Life: NCAA Division 1 sports, Greek Life, 200+ clubs and orgs, award winning student newspaper, and incredible study abroad program. No matter how you want to spend your time outside of the classroom you’ll find your people. There’s always something happening on or around campus and one thing you’ll notice when you visit is how much school pride everyone has.
Why underrated? Maybe if our athletics office had more success it would be better known but I think our students can take pride in the fact that their tuition doesn’t supplement a huge bloated athletics office. But you’ll still regularly catch Nevada on the national stage in NCAA tournaments or bowl games.
Cost/Financial aid: This is a big one for me. Full cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room, board, and books) for an out of state student is about $40,000. Most of our out of state students come from western states and qualify for WUE which drops it to $27,000. In state students pay $23,000. Most R1 schools in the west aren’t as generous with WUE and so for many students looking at our peers they can expect to pay closer to UC Davis’ (next geographically closest R1) whopping $72,000.
Why underrated? The way I like to frame it to prospective students is this: Let’s say you’d pay $45k more per year (Davis 72k minus our WUE 27k) to go to a different R1 research university. That’s $180k more for a bachelor’s degree. The list of schools and programs where it makes sense to spend that extra $180k is very, very short.

2024.05.16 19:56 Icy-Hovercraft4018 Lacking one piece of evidence - please help

Hi!
I am in the process of changing from a Skilled Worker visa to a unmarried family visa. I left my job the 25th of march thinking we could apply straight away since we fullfill all the criterias, but when finished the application they are asking us to provide following;
Who provides you with accommodation? The mother of the sponsor
You only need to provide this evidence if: you are exempt from meeting the income threshold you are responsible for some housing costs such as rent, mortgage or council tax
I will provide:
Proof of property ownership from the owner of the property you live in, such as a mortgage statement Confirm you will provide copy of an ID document of the owner of the property you live in, such as a passport
Copy of an ID document of the owner of the property you live in, such as a passport
Letter signed by the owner of the property you live in stating that you have permission to live there
We are living with my partner’s mum, and we found out she doesn’t have a photo ID… only a paper license. because of medical reasons it’s now taken 6 weeks for the DVLA to do her driver’s license, and they are saying it can take up to 10 weeks to receive it from today 😭
We pay his mum some money every month for rent and food costs, we do not have a contract etc but I take “You only need to provide this evidence if: you are responsible for some housing costs such as rent, mortgage or council tax” as we need to provide all of the evidence for accommodation including a proof of ID? Does anyone know?
Getting stressed since I still haven’t recieved my curtailment letter (left my job 2 months ago soon) and would like to be able to apply 😭

2024.05.16 19:53 TitusImmortalis Apple Watch Ultra - How do I return this to the owner?

I found an AWU on the ground, and the name in the medical ID isn't a name I can find online for my area.
I tried doing a reset thinking the activation lock would show me the email address so I could send a message, but the email address is obfuscated and the first letter is a G when the Medical ID name was an A.
I also have no Apple Store's in my area.
How can I find this person?

2024.05.16 19:49 lethargic_lemom Plz help me to Identify this is a job scam or not?

So I got this Job offer from a company named TL(not using real name) with 30% increment. TL is hiring for this offshore job profile for a australian company called JSH (again name not real).
TL told me that i have to go to australia for training.
There was only a few phone calls between me and TL and a interview and another round of interview with JSH. After that TL gave me a offer and asked for a few documents like passport pan adhar, normal stuff which i sent with watermarks so that they cannot use anywhere else and asked for my joining date and gave me an employment agreement cum letter of appointment.
Now thing is that i have a feeling this is a scam but cannot figure out the angle of scam. Is it a job scam but no upfront cash is being demanded by any party involved? Is a identity theft scam? Or is a real job?
I have treid to verify the social media and linkdin profile of all the individuals involved also checked gst of TL and ABN number (australian equivalent of CIN number) all things look all right. Also checked their glassdoor reviews its very neat. Treid to check the physical place where these companies are in delhi and australian there are little discrepancy there.
