The first mention of them appears in the annals of the Mao dynasty [12th century aTwbW], but their sufficiently high level of development at that time indicates a long existence. Referring to the development of cultures of other nations, historians suggest that the first real newts appeared in the 4th-2nd centuries bTwbW. A curious phenomenon is the physiology of newts was probably fully formed in the 1st millennium aTwbW and has not changed until now. Thus, the newts are one of the few nations [others are gerbils and rats] that has a completely natural origin, which does not include evolutionary changes that occur as a result of the development of civilization. This is explained by the place of newts in the evolutionary chain. Biologically, the newt is a swamp alpha predator. Solid physical performance, the highest intelligence, pack lifestyle, using of primitive tools and a strong hunting instinct allowed newts to dominate their habitat without the development of technologies. In fact, advanced technologies have only complemented this picture, without changing it in any way. The average life expectancy of a newt is 60-75 years (one of the longest in the Small World). Newts have a light muscular body with a long neck and tail, but short paws. There is an obvious evolutionary bias towards the trunk, tail and hind paws. The front paws are weak, but at the same time they are very agile and have developed fine motor skills. Thus, newts are great runners, but bad arm wrestlers. The spine, neck and tail of the newt are extremely strong. With a blow of the tail, a newt can seriously injur a relative or an adult frog. Starting from the ground with the tail and hind paws, an average newt can jump 10-15 steps in length and from 2 to 3 of its own height. The muscles and bones allow the newt to fly headfirst into the wall with a run without breaking his/her neck. At the same time, the tail and neck of a newt contains many vital arteries and nerve endings and are therefore vulnerable for deep cuts. The skull of the newt is very tough and easily withstands the blows of a stone or a club. Jaws and teeth allow the newt to tear the meat from the bodies and gnaw the bones. Newt is able to sense danger without any obvious signs of it. In ancient times, it helped newts to hunt swamp predators. And nowadays it helps the newts to leave the place of arrival of enemy shells in advance, act in a smoke screen, to shoot blind and hide from return fire... In fact, on the battlefield, newt relies on the instincts, not the mind. However, it was newt's intelligence that made them the pinnacle of the evolution of swamp life forms. Newts are incredibly intelligent, curious and constantly learning. And newts are never afraid of the new or the unknown, in the swamps, the unknown is a common thing. Having met something unfamiliar, newt will try to understand it. Having understood, he/she will try to remember it and will definitely tell others about it. Violence within the "family" is condemned, outside the family is not prohibited in any way, and sometimes even encouraged. Therefore, a newt can adore his/her own nephews, and without any probs finish off exactly the same age cubs, meeting them in the swamp. Nothing, not a developed judicial system, not even the Teaching of Great Humility, has helped to completely get rid of this "feature" of the newt's psychology. It is important to understand that for newts, the concept of "family" doesn't mean family by itself. Newt "family" is something between a commonwealth, a brotherhood and a clan. The "family" can include both real relatives and newts who are not related by blood, but have declared themselves relatives. In both cases, they are considered equivalent family members. Conversely, a blood relative who shows disrespect to the family will be permanently expelled... or just killed. Family sizes can be anything from 15-20 newts for small peasant families to hundreds of newts in Military Families or criminal gangs. Sometimes all the members of the "family" live together, sometimes not [for example, members of trading families see each other infrequently] But generally it doesn't matter, family members are obliged to support and help each other. They send money to each other, help solve problems, do business together, etc. And of course, helping a family member is the most important thing. Even if the newt ate the cubs alive and dismembered their parents, his/her family will help him/her escape justice by any possible means. Elders enjoy special respect in the family, as they accumulate experience and knowledge and pass it on to the young. Having a family is essential for newts. A lonely newt is considered inferior, since there is no one to protect him/her, and someone else's family will easily do whatever they want with him/her. Therefore, newts declare themselves brothers/sisters at any opportunity. This feature is especially important during the warfare, since newt can hardly rely on help of his/her comrades in critical moments if they are not his/her brothers/sisters. In general, the nature of newts makes them almost ideal soldiers and ensures the relative safety of the Swampland as a state. On the other hand, the society of newts is naturally unstable, and maintaining relative peace within the state costs the government enormous efforts. "Newts? “Alright, calm down. It's really not that serious.” Though the holographic representation of War Chief Neshkaname, complete with ocean blue eyes and linear facial tattoos on his tan face, looked quite noticeably tired, his overall demeanor seemed fairly positive. “I just got out of a meeting with representatives from the different protesting groups and all of them agree with the general idea of what we're trying to do with our united defense fleet. There's just quite a bit of disagreement about how our Confederacy should approach the questions related to Earth, Mars, and everyone in Sol.”
“What kind of questions are we talking about here?” General Robert Andrews, the now former General of the US Army, was the first to speak up amongst the crowd of military leaders. “Nothing about invading Earth, I hope.”
“Well…” Though Rob was only half serious about his comment concerning Earth, the way the commanding officer of the Nishnabe Militia’s Blue Fleet began his response put a genuinely concerned expression on a few faces from Sol. “It's only a small percent of our population who are calling for war to reclaim land. A few million people at most, none of whom hold any positions of leadership in our military. Luckily, there are far more people calling for boycotts, embargoes, or blockades as opposed to anything direct.”
“War Chief, to many governments on Earth, an embargo, and especially a blockade, would be considered akin to a direct declaration of war.” General Renee Descartes, the former Chief of Defense Staff of France and Second in Command of the European Union's Unified Military, despite the dark bags under her eyes implying she hadn't gotten anywhere near enough sleep before this meeting, retained her rather elegant poise when adding that bit of necessary context. “You see, the economy of Earth is highly reliant on importing raw materials from space. With the climate being as delicate as it is, no one is willing to risk the kinds of planetside resource harvesting necessary to keep the thirteen billion people in the Earth’s Sphere of Influence employed, fed, and happy. More importantly, we are starting to run out of easily accessible mineral deposits in space.”
“Yes, the lunar mines and the near-Earth asteroid colonies still under UN-E control simply aren't producing nearly enough material to meet growing demand.” Admiral Nathaniel Adeoye, who had also given up his position as the Chief of Astral Naval Staff of the African Federation, chimed in with a clearly worried tone in his deep voice. “While I can understand the rage some of your people must feel, especially towards Americans, the many different people of Africa were in no way responsible for the colonization of America. In fact, we were subject to colonialism ourselves.”
“At least y'all still got yahr homelands!” Commandant General Daniel Chasinghorse, the former Commander of the entirety of MarsGov's Void-Marine Corps, didn't mean for his statement directed at Adeoye to sound as vitriolic as it did. However, the idea of him, his Lakota people, and all the displaced Native American Nations who were now mostly living in space or on Mars potentially being included in the Nishnabe’s reasonably negative reaction towards the people of Earth had put him on edge. “Sorry for snappin’ at yah like that, Nate. But the people livin’ on Mars ain't nothin’ done to deserve bein’ restricted by an embargo or blockade. We need all the extra-Solar tech we can get if we're gonna keep our population's health from declining even further. And I’m sure the African Lunar colonies could really use that medical and gravity tech too!”
“Nothing's been decided yet, and most people on Shkegpewen want peace, we just haven't reached a consensus on how that peace will look.” War Chief Msko Pkwenech, the commander of the Nishnabe Militia’s Red Fleet, interjected while making an open gesture with his hands to try to pat down the tension building up in this meeting room. “And if helps at all, we did take quite a few public votes concerning technology sharing for things we consider essential. But Maser probably has quicker access to the results than I would.”
“About ninety percent of respondents voted to immediately authorize and start sending out medical and gravity tech, including a production ship to come out and make things in-system, which is well above the seventy-five percent consensus needed to move forward.” As soon as the Light-born AI holographically representing their consciousness as an androgynous human began to speak in an incredibly soothing tone, the stress levels in the room began to fall. “There are currently a few councils debating the finer details and arranging logistics of what will be sent. However, the specifics of who gets what and when they get it will be negotiated between the respective governments in Sol and the Nishnabe Intergovernmental Council. Our job as the United Human Defense Fleet is not to interfere with diplomacy between nations, just to ensure that diplomacy is handled in a reasonable and non-threatening manner. Now, with that said, the vote to provide essential assistance was just one if a few taken over the last couple weeks. And while that poll was overwhelming and definitive, the ones concerning visas, immigration, galactic trade, and interspecies relations all fell below the consensus threshold for the Confederacy to adopt an official policy. When we say embargoes and blockades, we are purely referring to trade interactions between species, not between humanity and your economic exclusive zone. Once the relevant councils develop updated options for people to vote on, the next vote will be held.”
“An’ how long's all that gonna take?” Commandant Admiral Carol Nez, as the former head of MarsGov’s Astral Intelligence Collective and Councilmember in the Navajo Nation of Mars, was keenly aware of both the pressing urge of many on the red planet to live on a world with a breathable atmosphere and how just long it often took to for Native Nations to build a consensus. “Everaday we got at least a thousand babies born in Martian maternity stations an’ at least thirty percent ‘ave some kinda health issues. The sooner we get y'all's medical tech, the more kids that're gonna grow up to be happy an’ healthy!”
“We are well aware of the negative health implications of trying to raise children in low-gravity.” Msko already had his tablet out and was in the process of sending over the relevant information to his counterparts from Earth and Mars. “Our genetic modification technologies require individualized sequencing but they can be applied before or after birth to correct any serious issues. They can even be used well into adulthood. I got my eye color changed when I became an adult, so we can help anyone who hasn’t already gotten cybernetic replacements for affected body parts. All of our ships still in Sol are actively trying to produce as much of the base materials as they can and are working with doctors from your stations to get everything deployed as quickly as possible.”
“Why don’cha just teach our docs how to do it?” As soon as Carol got the question out, Msko and Nesh shot each other cautious glances before they both looked towards Maser.
“Well, Commandant Admiral Nez…” As soon as the hologram of the AI began to speak, it was clear their words were directed at everyone present from Sol. “To be completely blunt with all of you, we have reason to believe that the moment people from either Mars or Earth got full access to the genetic manipulation technology the Nishnabe utilize, someone would begin conducting experiments to turn humans into living weapons even more dangerous than the cybernetic ones you already produce. The cybernetics sported by many of your civilians would be legally considered military-grade combat modifications, and individuals with those cybernetics would be barred from entering many GCC standard space stations. We know there are doctors within both UN-E and MarsGov already working on projects to modify your species genome to produce what you call super soldiers, which something which is generally highly illegal under GCC laws. In fact, the genetic manipulation done to Sarah and Johnathan McAfree would likely be considered combat adjacent modifications according to GCC standards, and they would also be subject to various limitations due to their enhanced physiology.”
“Hey, now! Spooky an’ ‘er brother ain’t that scary!” Though he had been spending most of this meeting quietly sitting in his corner of the round table and trying to stay out of things he considered to be beyond his expertise, Professor Mikhail T. River felt compelled to say something now that his ex and her brother had been brought up. “Sure, she can bench press me. An’ Johnny can pick up the stove to sweep under it. But that ain't the gnarliest I ever seen! I mean, jus’ look at Comandante Harrison over here!”

While the members of the United Human Defense Fleet Council were in their meeting and discussing the rumors of Nishnabe protests Sarah had also caught wind of, that was far above her paygrade. Despite a tinge of concern fluttering away in the back of the unusually tall and rather athletically built Scotswoman’s mind, she wasn't worried about the things she had no control over. At the moment, she, her rather short and somewhat pudgy mother, and her colossal but cognitively limited brother were relaxing in the stables of the opulent nature area aboard UHDF DS-1 and spending time with the unicorn-like kaehi'xito that Mik had gifted to them. Though the three gingers were each busy with different things most of the day, Donna and Johnny with their Nishnabemwin and remote job training courses while Sarah performed her role as an intelligence analyst, the small family from Glasgow truly cherished this time they got to spend together. And the fact they were bonding with the closest living creatures in the galaxy to unicorns only made this even better for all of them.
“Hey Sarah! There you are!” As soon as Miakorva's voice called out from the entrance to the stable building, Sarah, her family, and the three unicorn-like creatures turned to see the Qui’ztar approaching them with familiar canine at her side. “And look who I found wandering around the ship! Did you know that Mikhail lets her walk around unsupervised?”
“Hiya Mia!” Being the closest to the entrance, Johnny was the first to greet the lanky and seemingly muscular blue woman before he crouched down low and extended a hand towards the Cane Corso. “An’ Micky lets her roam cuz she's a good girlie. Isn't tha’ righ’, Terry?”
“Terry Good dog!” Terry’s soft but deep whine was translated by her collar while she approached the man with her tail vigorously wagging.
“Terry's a trained station guard dog, Mia.” Sarah added while shooting the Qui’ztar intelligence officer a cheeky wink and coy smile. “It's ‘er job to wander a station, ‘r in this case a ship, an’ be on the lookout for trouble. An’ now that she can talk, she's a perfect workin’ animal. But wha’s up? Were yah lookin’ for me?”
“Oh, yes. Yes, I was. But… uh…” Mia paused for a moment as she watched the massive beast of a dog place her paws on Johnny's shoulders and begin licking the man's face as if he had smothered some kind of invisible but quite tasty treat across his skin. “Isn’t there a concern that Terry may… Well… Hurt someone? Her species are non-sapient apex predators with strong hunting instincts, correct?”
“Tha's why she and most other workin’ dogs ‘re so well trained, love.” Donna replied with a giggle, the adorable display of affection between her son and Mik's dog forcing a massive smile across her freckled and slightly wrinkled face. “There's always a bit o’ risk with dogs, especially the biggins like Terry ‘ere. But if these unicorns aren't freakin’ out cuz o’ ‘er, then we don’ gotta be worried.”
“Kaehi'xito didn’t evolve with canine predators, so they likely don't even recognize her as a potential threat.” As Mia watched the beast of a dog lean more of her weight on to Johnny, she half expected the large and well-built man to fall over from the force. However, much to her surprise, the man stopped his energetic scratching on Terry's sides, wrapped his arms around her waist, and effortlessly lifted the gargantuan animal into the air, all the while it continued to lick his face. “But seeing you carry that creature like a baby would be enough to make almost anyone with caniphobia be cautiously curious about these creatures. And they must not be as heavy as they look if you can pick one up so easily.”
“Oh, Terry’s a thickin! At least fifteen stone!” In a motion that seemed in utter opposition to Johnny's comment, the man half-tossed the Cane Corso into the air so that he could reposition his hands to cradle the massive canine as if she were a literal baby. “But she's still a good lil pupper, ain't yah, Terry?”
“Terry, good baby!” Though Terry hadn't started flailing or showing any obvious signs of discomfort, she suddenly turned her head towards Sarah with a longing look in her golden eyes. “Pack-mother cuddle?”
“Yeah, sure, yah big ol’ lunk.”
Though Mia could believe a man as impressively large as Johnny may not have much difficulty in lifting a hundred kilo canine, she was completely flabbergasted by Sarah's ability to simply pull Terry from Johnny's grasp and continue to hold the animal up without even the slightest indication of strain. Not only had she just gotten confirmation that this creature was just as heavy as she thought, Miakorva was now being faced with the fact that the woman she had been cuddling with a night for quite some time was significantly stronger than she had realized. According to all the interspecies education she had received, which may have been slightly biased by the Qui’ztar professor teaching the courses, her own species had the highest ratio of strength to body mass of any Ascended species. And while she was aware that this woman she had formed a relationship with weighed about the same as she did despite being several centimeters shorter, Mia had yet to witness Sarah's capabilities demonstrated in such a casual manner.
“By the Matriarch, Sarah!” The lanky blue woman couldn't help herself as her bioluminescent freckles lit up at the shocking display of strength. “How are you that strong?!?”
“Gene mods.” Though Sarah didn't hesitate in her answer, she did wince slightly as she did so. “Me muscles’re almost twice as dense as the average human's. Tha's actually somethin’ I had to talk to Maser an’ NAN abou’ the other day. ‘Parently tha’ ain't a thing most species do for some reason. Bu’ I'm pre’y sure we talked abou’ tha’ already.”
“You did mention it but… Well… I didn't realize your people's genetic engineering was that sophisticated. But I guess that does confirm a couple of the rumors I've heard that I was going to ask you about.”
“Wha’ rumors?” Donna blurted out with a bit too defensive of a tone as her eyes fell upon her son who had gone back to brushing his vaguely moose-like unicorn. “An’ who's spreadin’ ‘em?”
“Well…” Mia hesitated for a moment, causing the two Scotswomen to shoot her suspicious looks. “I was assisting with the logistical planning with the Nishnabe in charge of the distribution of medicine to people on Earth and Mars, most of which involved genetic modification serums. And when I asked why there was no plan, or even consideration, of passing on the technology so it could be locally produced, the people I was working with told me there were rumors of… Well… My people would call it Qui'kijarto niko'txo, which would roughly translate to an enhanced soldier project.”
“Yahr people tried to make super soldiers, too?” Sarah asked with a laugh that implied a sense of relief.
“No!” The instant denial caused Sarah to cease her laughter and forced a slight frown on her rather pale and freckled face. “As soon as my people began developing genetic engineering almost thirty thousand years ago, our government and scientific community came together to completely outlaw any attempts to enhance our form in a way that would make us even deadlier in combat. Besides that, even after thirty thousand years of research, we have only recently mastered the ability to stabilize our genetics and guard against speciation due to diverse environmental conditions.”
“Yah really tryin to tell us yahr people never tried to improve themselves?” The older Scotswoman chimed in with a clearly doubtful expression. “No one ever tried to give their kids an advantage in life? Super soldiers experiments ain't the only thing we use gene modding for.”
“Well… No… I don’t believe we ever have.” Mia hadn't really put much thought into it, even when she and Sarah had talked about it before. But now she was starting to realize that an attempt to give a child an advantage in life by increasing their physical capabilities could directly translate to turning that child into an ideal soldier. “As far as I know, very few other species have engaged in that form of genetic modification. And the ones who have tried struggled to produce anything truly successful.”
“Gene mods ain't always successful, Mia.” Johnny didn't bother to look away from the unicorn he was brushing as he made the comment lest he see the sadness that suddenly appeared in his mother's eyes. “Bu’ I learned the other day tha’ Nishnabe gene tech is way better than wha’ we got on Earth. Maybe they'll ‘ave some stuff to teach us after they feel we're trustworthy enough to learn it.”

We know there are doctors within both UN-E and MarsGov already working on projects to modify your species genome to produce what you call super soldiers, which something which is generally highly illegal under GCC laws. In fact, the genetic manipulation done to Sarah and Johnathan McAfree would likely be considered combat adjacent modifications according to GCC standards, and they would also be subject to various limitations due to their enhanced physiology.”

At the moment, she, her rather short and somewhat pudgy mother, and her colossal but cognitively limited brother were relaxing in the stables of the opulent nature area aboard UHDF DS-1 and spending time with the unicorn-like kaehi'xito that Mik had gifted to them. Though the three gingers were each busy with different things most of the day, Donna and Johnny with their Nishnabemwin and remote job training courses while Sarah performed her role as an intelligence analyst, the small family from Glasgow truly cherished this time they got to spend together. And the fact they were bonding with the closest living creatures in the galaxy to unicorns only made this even better for all of them.

But… uh…” Mia paused for a moment as she watched the massive beast of a dog place her paws on Johnny's shoulders and begin licking the man's face as if he had smothered some kind of invisible but quite tasty treat across his skin. “Isn’t there a concern that Terry may… Well… Hurt someone? Her species are non-sapient apex predators with strong hunting instincts, correct?”
“Tha's why she and most other workin’ dogs ‘re so well trained, love.” Donna replied with a giggle, the adorable display of affection between her son and Mik's dog forcing a massive smile across her freckled and slightly wrinkled face. “There's always a bit o’ risk with dogs, especially the biggins like Terry ‘ere. But if these unicorns aren't freakin’ out cuz o’ ‘er, then we don’ gotta be worried.”
“Kaehi'xito didn’t evolve with canine predators, so they likely don't even recognize her as a potential threat.” As Mia watched the beast of a dog lean more of her weight on to Johnny, she half expected the large and well-built man to fall over from the force. However, much to her surprise, the man stopped his energetic scratching on Terry's sides, wrapped his arms around her waist, and effortlessly lifted the gargantuan animal into the air, all the while it continued to lick his face. “But seeing you carry that creature like a baby would be enough to make almost anyone with caniphobia be cautiously curious about these creatures. And they must not be as heavy as they look if you can pick one up so easily.”
“Oh, Terry’s a thickin! At least fifteen stone!” In a motion that seemed in utter opposition to Johnny's comment, the man half-tossed the Cane Corso into the air so that he could reposition his hands to cradle the massive canine as if she were a literal baby. “But she's still a good lil pupper, ain't yah, Terry?”
“Terry, good baby!” Though Terry hadn't started flailing or showing any obvious signs of discomfort, she suddenly turned her head towards Sarah with a longing look in her golden eyes. “Pack-mother cuddle?”
“Yeah, sure, yah big ol’ lunk.”
Though Mia could believe a man as impressively large as Johnny may not have much difficulty in lifting a hundred kilo canine, she was completely flabbergasted by Sarah's ability to simply pull Terry from Johnny's grasp and continue to hold the animal up without even the slightest indication of strain. Not only had she just gotten confirmation that this creature was just as heavy as she thought, Miakorva was now being faced with the fact that the woman she had been cuddling with a night for quite some time was significantly stronger than she had realized. According to all the interspecies education she had received, which may have been slightly biased by the Qui’ztar professor teaching the courses, her own species had the highest ratio of strength to body mass of any Ascended species. And while she was aware that this woman she had formed a relationship with weighed about the same as she did despite being several centimeters shorter, Mia had yet to witness Sarah's capabilities demonstrated in such a casual manner.
“By the Matriarch, Sarah!” The lanky blue woman couldn't help herself as her bioluminescent freckles lit up at the shocking display of strength. “How are you that strong?!?”
“Gene mods.” Though Sarah didn't hesitate in her answer, she did wince slightly as she did so. “Me muscles’re almost twice as dense as the average human's. Tha's actually somethin’ I had to talk to Maser an’ NAN abou’ the other day. ‘Parently tha’ ain't a thing most species do for some reason. Bu’ I'm pre’y sure we talked abou’ tha’ already.”
“You did mention it but… Well… I didn't realize your people's genetic engineering was that sophisticated. But I guess that does confirm a couple of the rumors I've heard that I was going to ask you about.”
“Wha’ rumors?” Donna blurted out with a bit too defensive of a tone as her eyes fell upon her son who had gone back to brushing his vaguely moose-like unicorn. “An’ who's spreadin’ ‘em?”
“Well…” Mia hesitated for a moment, causing the two Scotswomen to shoot her suspicious looks. “I was assisting with the logistical planning with the Nishnabe in charge of the distribution of medicine to people on Earth and Mars, most of which involved genetic modification serums. And when I asked why there was no plan, or even consideration, of passing on the technology so it could be locally produced, the people I was working with told me there were rumors of… Well… My people would call it Qui'kijarto niko'txo, which would roughly translate to an enhanced soldier project.”
“Yahr people tried to make super soldiers, too?” Sarah asked with a laugh that implied a sense of relief.
“No!” The instant denial caused Sarah to cease her laughter and forced a slight frown on her rather pale and freckled face. “As soon as my people began developing genetic engineering almost thirty thousand years ago, our government and scientific community came together to completely outlaw any attempts to enhance our form in a way that would make us even deadlier in combat. Besides that, even after thirty thousand years of research, we have only recently mastered the ability to stabilize our genetics and guard against speciation due to diverse environmental conditions.”
“Yah really tryin to tell us yahr people never tried to improve themselves?” The older Scotswoman chimed in with a clearly doubtful expression. “No one ever tried to give their kids an advantage in life? Super soldiers experiments ain't the only thing we use gene modding for.”
“Well… No… I don’t believe we ever have.” Mia hadn't really put much thought into it, even when she and Sarah had talked about it before. But now she was starting to realize that an attempt to give a child an advantage in life by increasing their physical capabilities could directly translate to turning that child into an ideal soldier. “As far as I know, very few other species have engaged in that form of genetic modification. And the ones who have tried struggled to produce anything truly successful.”
“Gene mods ain't always successful, Mia.” Johnny didn't bother to look away from the unicorn he was brushing as he made the comment lest he see the sadness that suddenly appeared in his mother's eyes. “Bu’ I learned the other day tha’ Nishnabe gene tech is way better than wha’ we got on Earth. Maybe they'll ‘ave some stuff to teach us after they feel we're trustworthy enough to learn it.”

My husband and I got our boy when we first got married. Tbh we had no idea what we were in for. We did some research on the breed before we got him to make sure it was okay to have one in Arizona and all the articles we read said yes it was okay but of course there’s things we need to consider and do during the summer.
To make things worse, we also live in an apartment. When we first got our boy and he was a puppy, people would stop us all the time to pet him and tell us how cute he was. He was very popular as a pup. To this day, people, especially children, love seeing our dog, but I’ve noticed people shaming us when we are walking him.
One day our maintenance guy came to do a quick fix on our thermostat and he kept telling me that these dogs don’t belong anywhere but Alaska or places where is snows. Then today this lady came out of nowhere and was starting at my husky while he was peeing and told me she used to have a malamute when she lived in Colorado where is SNOWED and she gave him up to a family who had a bigger yard because she NEEDED it. At our last apartment, we had some guy harass us all the time telling us that our dog didn’t belong here and that we are abusing him for keeping him in Arizona.
I had no idea how much backlash we would get once he got older. He is 3 now and I get it. Maybe a husky in Arizona and in an apartment is definitely not something we would recommend to anyone…. But we have him already and we’re doing the best we can.
He’s potty trained, we wake up extra early during the summer to take him to the park so he doesn’t overheat and we are continuing to train him in different aspects. We taught him so many things (currently working on his separation anxiety) and we have bought him everything he needs or wants. I do feel bad for how naive we were, but like most people, we don’t know what we’re getting into the first time.
We just don’t see rehoming as an option. These breeds are so difficult to handle and it takes special people to care for them. I KNOW he would end up in the shelter. So many huskies end up in the shelter. He’s our son. I just feel so uncomfortable taking him out in public.
Has anyone else experienced this?

But as I've been helping my sick dog since last September I feel I'm getting sad and sadder. She had many issues but to cut it short her kidneys are bad right now and she didn't eat for the past 4 days. I've spent all the money I could each month, meds, vets, everything. Daily care routine. I'm just sad seeing her apathic and getting thinner. I wish she could go in peace but it's really hard right now seeing such a gluton food hungry and happy dog going away like this, slowly.
I don't ask much, just help me showing how stoicism can help my mindset right now. I'm really not able to think logically now, I feel empty, so I'm asking for my stoic friends some word of advice.

So last night my wife came home from work and their was a fledgling starling on the sidewalk right in front of our apartment. It was raining heavily so she made a little box with nesting and left it outside for the parents to find it. I come out this morning and it's still there. We got it out of the cold considering it had been several hours and it was wet. Tried leaving it out again and still no parents. My question is what is the next best step? We obviously want it to go back to it's nest but we have no idea where it is and with the amount of neighborhood dogs and cats it's chance of survival on the pavement is slim. Currently it's in a warm and dry spot with a slurry made from catfood for food so at least it's warm and dry right now. Any help is appreciated.

He does through long phases without any and then will go back to having them multiple times a week, so I know he’s able to hold it. I figured he would grow out of this, but there seems to be no end in sight! My roommate has a 5 year old Iggy who is the same way. Does anyone have tips? Hey there, my name’s Tom and as my title suggests, I’m a 27 year old white guy from the U.K, I’m about 6’2 (so I’m good at reaching for things off high shelves when needed) and admittedly kinda chubby but it’s something I’m working on. I don’t mind sharing pics once we get talking and a connection has been established, but anonymity is something that’s quite important to me for the most part, also I do have kind of a baby-face just so you’re aware. I’m an INFJ if that means anything to you. I’ve got two dogs and will happily share pics of them. I will say I’m fully monogamous and lean more towards wanting kids at some point in life, but I’m in no rush to do so.
In terms of my personality, I’m quite honest but without being overly blunt or rude, I’m fiercely loyal, maybe even to the point where it becomes a negative. I’d say I’ve got a really good sense of humour which is mainly sarcastic, self-deprecating and can at times be incredibly dark but can throw the odd dad joke or shitty pun in when I think of a good one. Hello! I hope this is the right place to ask. I got a gcc back in November. I have no experience with them especially one that hasn’t been hand raised. Sorry this will be long and I’m more of a Reddit lurker than a poster. And I’m more than willing to change things to help him.
His(?) name is Banjo and he came from the chain pet store I work at (mistake #1). I did a TON of research and prep b4 we got him. I have owned cockatiels in the past and read they were similar in care. He’s fun and silly, very curious. He will be a year old in July if his papers were accurate.
But here’s the problem. In the months that I’ve had him. I haven’t made any progress in socializing him. He’s terrified of me, I’ve given him space, offered him his favorite treats, I always talk softly around him, and I spend most of my time in the same room. Anytime I approach his cage, no matter how slow I go, he runs to the back corner of the cage, sways back and forth nervously and hits and drags his beak on the bars repeatedly.
I tried letting him out of the cage but he panics and starts crashing into things with reckless abandon. Last time he got stuck under a chair with his nails snagged in the carpet and he gave me quite a nasty bite.
He is curious of me and will flock call me when I leave the room and when I get home from work. But I’m at a loss.
Does anyone have any more advice on what to do? It really breaks my heart not being able to bond with him.
He’s in a decent sized cage I want to say it’s 24x24x36 in. (we plan to get him an even bigger one when we save up. He gets new toys weekly (handmade to not break the bank). He gets Brown’s Encore foraging conure diet (I’m more than willing to change his food if this isn’t good) he also gets a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and leafy greens every other day. If this should be daily I’ll start doing that.
He is also in our “reptile room” it stays warm and humid in there, plus the dogs and cats aren’t allowed in the room when no one is there. I always put on a YouTube playlist when I leave the room for longer than a few minutes.
TLDR- I got a gcc back in November and I haven’t been able to bond with him and he is incredibly fearful of being out of the cage. I need advice on socializing him, because I haven’t gotten anywhere with him.

Hi y'all. I may not have any cool progress pics to share, but I wanted to share a few thoughts and observations after being on 2.5 for exactly one month today. Figured this might help anyone who also recently completed their first dose and might have similar questions. About me: 39, male, USA, starting weight of 272, height 5 foot 8 inches.
if you're new to Zepbound and stumbled on this post to get some insight or validation, the only thing I can say is that it has positively changed the way I think about food. Before, it was always about when I could get my next fix. Now, it's more like fuel and how it works to give me energy. I was (and still very much am) a foodie who loves to cook and try new things. That's all still the same, but now I'm just eating less of it.

- It started to work pretty much right away for me. I took it around noon the first day, and by dinnertime I could notice I didn't have much of an appetite. And when I did eat, I was full after a few bites.
- Truly for the first time in my adult life, I felt satisfied and full. Every other time I could recall, I was "full" in the sense that I physically couldn't eat any more, but really wanted to. Now, I am truly full and have ne desire to keep eating no matter how delicious it is. And this right here, I think, is the crux of why Zepbound is effective for many folks.
- Weight loss was rapid the first week, with 6 pounds coming off after 7 days. I expected this, because anytime I've dieted in the past, this has also happened. But nonetheless I was happy.
- Overall, I lost 14 pounds in the first 30 days of being on 2.5. I feel like this is pretty much right in line with what I expected, and similar to what others experience. I'm not gonna lie, I kinda wished it was 20 or more, but I'll take all the NSVs I can get at this point.
- More so than just the number on the scale, my clothes are already feeling looser, and I feel WAYYY less bloated. I realized how much I was sabotaging my weight loss before, and how sick I would feel after having a huge meal.
- Side effects have been pretty minimal. Some days I feel tired and dragging more than usual. Constipation has been the most common side effect for me, but I've really increased my fiber intake and that seems to work. Bananas, Fiber One bars, and apples are my go-to.
- The one negative thing I am noticing though, is I feel it working less the further I go with just 2.5. I know many people stay on 2.5 for awhile, but I'm not sure how long it's sustainable for me tbh. This week (I take my shot on Mondays) has been a mixed bag, but I've felt hunger and food noise creeping back in here and there. I definitely am still eating less than before, but I feel my body craving food juuuust a bit more this week than last week, and more last week than the week before.

Hey there! I'm really curious to learn about the different methods that daycares use to handle dog fights safely. I've had some experience working at dog daycares, and let me tell you, the strategies we've used to break up fights just haven't been effective. Most of the time, someone, including myself, ends up getting hurt. It's tough when a dog is being pinned down and attacked by another dog, and the instinct to step in and pull them apart often results in bites. So, grabbing on collars is a no-go, and using a slip leash is also tricky when the dogs are tangled up. It's not quick enough to prevent injuries. Recently, my workplace tried the "wheelbarrow" method, which is supposed to be the safest option. Unfortunately, when I gave it a shot, the dog immediately turned around and launched at me. It's definitely not easy when things turn into a full-on brawl, and other dogs tend to join in and take swipes at each other. I guess I'm just working at the wrong daycare lol But honestly, this has happened at every daycare I've worked at, and now I have scars all over my arms. So, I'm really interested to hear what methods you all use that actually work when it comes to dealing with common dog fights.

 | First things first, I have not read Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, which this book is in some sense a prequel to, honestly going in to this I had no idea or expectations about it, which I'd say made for a quite interesting, and maybe slightly more difficult reading, and yet I don't think I could say that not having the pre-requisite knowledge about this novel took away from my enjoyment of it in the slightest, if anything it added to it. submitted by marqueemoonchild to literature [link] [comments] For me, this was a truly fascinating exploration of the reality of post-colonialism, which is perhaps the greatest and most constantly vital thread running throughout the entire book, and highlighted most in the middle section. The relationship between the colonising force that is Rochester and the colonised, the Caribbean islands and its people, and what has become even lower than the colonised, the 'white cockroach' that is the Creole heiress Antoinette and her post-emancipation impoverished and deeply hated family. Rochester comes to hate the island, his desire for its secrets to be revealed to him is of course never submitted to, civilisation cannot truly control the power and wisdom of nature. To combat this, he takes his fear and hatred out on his wife, in time not even acknowledging her by the name she recognises as her own, and treating anything outside what he sees as proper (civilised Victorian British) as madness, the madness inherent in the people of the un-civilised world as he sees it. Not only that, but as Antoinette recounts her childhood days spent in poverty, we see the impacts of an island freed from slavery presented by Rhys in a much more immediate, and violent way, as her and her family are utterly despised by the native, black people of Coulibri, this seething feeling eventually overflowing as the Cosway household is burned down and the family has to flee, resulting in the breakdown not only of the family unit, but of the utter mental collapse of her mother who no longer recognises her own daughter and is then confined to spend the rest of her life in abused by those employed to care for the "madwoman". By far the best aspect of the book for me was the exceptional characterisation, especially the two most prominent characters, and the clash between prim and proper, at all times conforming to Victorian ideal British gentleman Mr. Rochester and Antoinette who in her wildness, her beauty and sensuality is a fitting extension of the island itself, its no surprise then that Rochester's relationship with Antoinette develops in the exact same way as it does with the island and its people as a whole, going from feeling confusion and intrigue at its wildness and mysteries, to a possibility of content living life as a spectator and enjoyer of the sheer beauty, concluding in a complete rejection of it, it will not be civilised and give up itself up to him, and since neither will Antoinette he declares her mad and not fit for him. Yet he himself is hiding his true self and genuine emotion from his wife at almost all times, as he muses at one stage while being served dinner "He served the food with such a mournful expression that I thought these people are very vulnerable. How old was I when I learned to hide what I felt? A very small boy. Six, five, even earlier. It was necessary, I was told, and that view I have always accepted." And herein lies the main conflict between the two, Rochester who is hiding himself due to the shame of not doing so induced on him by his culture, and Antoinette who hides herself and her history out of a sense of necessity, if not desperation. The way that Rhys has the perspective constantly flit and shift from one to the other as they tell their side of the story and reveal their true selves only to us readers only heightens this and make the characters and their actions and motivations far more fully-fleshed realised than than so many of the books I've read in the past. Another thing that this does is it makes this book completely accessible to those who have come across it before Jane Eye as without trying to make everything clear at the beginning reading through the constant gaps in the narrative, time shifts and different perspectives work in a way that makes it both an enjoyable and satisfying puzzle to piece together for the first time as you read on, but I also get the feeling that even for someone who has read Jane Eyre before this and knows how the plot will go, the way the story is presented would make it just as fresh and exciting as someone with no knowledge of what is happening before it happens We end the novel asking ourselves who is really among the living and who with the dead, at least if we follow along with this novel's definition of "a zombi is a dead person who seems to be alive or a living person who seems to be dead. A zombi can also be the spirit of a place, usually malignant but sometimes to be propitiated with sacrifices or offerings of flowers and fruit. They cry out in the wind, that is their voice, they rage in the sea that is their anger." It may seem obvious that Antoinette is the zombi, she has been taken away from her home, her freedom has been utterly demolished, not even her name is alive anymore as she will now only be referred to by another, all that's left to her is to wail and curse her existence until she is driven to give up and no longer care for anything just like her own mother was driven to, yet after the novel's conclusion she felt a hundredfold times more alive than Rochester her captor, master and jailer. Whether you've read Jane Eyre or not, it really makes no difference, you absolutely should read this one. 4/5 |

I know I'm weird in that if you and I are friends and I dislike someone I don't expect you to dislike them. I don't assume that just because I have a problem with someone that they are a bad person who everyone should dislike. Same goes for groups of people. - you have 3 options to add a station modules planetary feature who expend the frame world :
- planetary decision to spend 400 influence, this option also adds a reorganised logistic feature that speeds up build and decision time
- planetary decision to spend 600 alloy (this option will increase cost (/!\ not base cost, so first is 15% second is 15% of 115% etc) by 15% each time it is used) this option adds a secondary feature giving 0.5 building slot (isn't that great ? with enough of these you can forget the housing district right ? this is forshadowing)
- harvesting asteroids, cost 25 influence, for every 4 it will add a mining district slot and allows you to build 1 more district so you can build it unlike vanilla minor orbitals. This one doesn't tell you it will add the station module so it might be a bug idk, it is cheap but requires a good spawn. In 3.12 it will also compete a lot with the arc furnace kilo structure, not to mention stuff already in giga like the great asteroids manufacturies producing like 2500 out of thin air or the asteroid canons
- finally building a planetary outpost (which is said to be the equivalent of colony ship) for some forsaken reason cost as much as the colony ship + 50 influence AND it's immobilizing your consturction ship for 2 YEARS. Just why ? are the bonus that powerful ? i don't think so, you faster planetary decision and pop growth but no frame world extension AND THEY COUNT AS MUCH AS COLONIES TOWARD EMPIRE SIZE !! costing that much ressources you desperately need for frame world extension, i don't think it's worth building at all (don't worry about the pop growth speed, you don't want overpop, and you can't build jobs faster than they grow)
- your only planet has a size 16 with 12 building slots, at the start you have 5 unbuild districts
- at the start you can build districts for housing, alloy, consumer good, energy, minerals and food, they give 2 housing and 2 jobs
- refinery districts are pretty cool, each one is the equivalent of 1 ancient refinery building. no housing tho. They are buildable after the first refinery you research and unlock 1 more job for each refinery
- you unlock the unity distrcit with colonial bureaucracy tech (T2 unity building) THE DISTRICT COST AS MUCH AS THE ONE ON AN ECUMENOPOLIS (900 minerals, 45 rare crystal) FOR 2 HOUSING AND 4 JOBS (ecu has 10 housing 6 jobs). THIS IS A TREND
- you unlock the research district with T2 labs, now i don't know for you but recently i've been getting unlucky, getting T2 labs 50 years into the game IT'S NOT FUN, frame world is STARVED for building slots, research and unity should be buildable at base. OH DID I MENTIONED IT ALSO COST AS MUCH AS THE RING WORLD'S VARIANT 900 MINERALS AND 45 EXOTIC GAZ AND LIKE THE UNITY ONE IT'S 4 JOBS 2 HOUSING ? WHY !? please, use the habitat one
- you unlock entertainment district with the T2 holotheater, once again, ecu cost of 900 minerals, 45 exotic gaz, and same nerfs of 4 jobs and 2 housings
- you unlock security districts with T3 capital building, again ecu cost 900 minerals, 45 volatile motes, 2 housing 5 enforcers
- commercial district with T2 tradfe building, again ecu cost 900 minerals 45 rare crystals, 2 housing, 2 merchant 4 clerk
- stronghold district, i guess from a maginot world, 900 minerals 45 motes, 4 jobs 2 housing as usual
Anyway, at this point of the game i start having access to some kilo structures, and i'm still not having a good time :
- researching the habitat tech lets you salvage (destroy and clean up) habitats to expend the frame world. would be great but the AI doesn't build that much habitat in gigas
- i discover my beloved asteroid manufactury has been nerfed. now building it give access to a building giving 10 jobs depending on the asteroid it was built on and the type of industry you said you wanted. anyway, now it's useless to me, starved for building slots as i am
- i discover that orbital ring add the decision to add processing secondary orbitals to the frame world, giving the effect of orbital rings module to the ressource boosting buildings similar to how it works in ring world
- you can roll an engeneering tech "molten shipyard facility" which unlock a decision "Expend Heavy Industry", it cost 10k minerals and 150 influence (roughly half an ecu) and it has the feature to make the alloy and CG districts as dog as the other advanced districts i already complained about : ecu cost, nerfed job/housing. Take it tho, you really really need the districts
Then i finally hit the megastructures point of the game (praise be the yddrassil complex, close second to the old asteroid manufacturies and now my absolute fav of the mod), only a few affect the frame world
- orbital ringworld archology : usually this megastructure adds 20% district to the planet and is upgradable twice to 40% and 60%. should be great for the frame world right ? well "expend station infrastructure" costing 200 influence and 15k alloy for a great 5% district bonus instead ... my frame world is size 50 at this point and i'm getting bullied by everyone around me. The enhancing techs do nothing so while i have a size 50 planet + 2/3 districts, byt that point other empires will have a fat size 30 ecu + 18 that has about 50% more metalurgist jobs than the frame world that cannot even go full alloy world because it's the only planet i have. Was the nerf truly needed ?
- planetary scaled computing complex add upgrade data facilities cost 25k alloy, 300 influence 100 cystals for 10 researcher jobs and +25% science output
- penrose sphere + integrated penrose sphere : you get the decision to integrate penrose sphere to the frame world, it will start building it and upon completion, the district will go from 2 jobs to 8 with a mineral upkeep added. good, i need the districts
- matter decompressor, similar to the above, also uncaps the district limit for minerals
- Some techs (habitat, ring worlds) reduce the cost to extend frame world with alloy, but at this point i'm paying like 15k+ anyway, i might as well just spam more megas (also the reduction is making the scaling cot go from +15% to +10% woaw)

I originally posted this on the ED anonymous sub, (no replies yet) but then I found this sub! So I decided to share my situation here.
Apart from having autism and ADHD, I (26F, turning 27 at the end of the month) also have what my previous psychiatrist called a “neurological feeding disorder”.
This is due to impaired interception (internal body sensations) from neonatal brain damage. This brain damage was caused by a hemorrhage, which also caused cerebral palsy. I also have general anxiety disorder and depression.
As a child and teen, I definitely had ARFID behaviors, which were dismissed as picky eating behaviors. It’s just that “high-level” autism, ADHD, and ARFID wasn’t diagnosed in girls in the early 2000s.
I basically lived on a “beige diet” of cereal, bread, snack cakes, pasta, pizza, and some meat, like chicken strips or cheeseburgers. I wouldn’t eat sandwiches, eggs, seafood, fruits, or vegetables, except for peas and white potatoes.
I was somewhat underweight until high school, and I remember my mom would always offer me “chocolate milk” (Pediasure / Ensure) when I was younger. I then gained weight in high school due to depression and just generally eating processed food. At my highest weight in school, I was 135 pounds.
Here’s some backstory about where things started to shift. Trigger warning for numbers, skip over if needed.

That carb-heavy diet was up until I turned 24, when I first tried a keto diet for mental health. Things were going really well, until I eventually developed malnutrition from losing too much weight unintentionally. My height is 4’8” tall.
I went from 110 pounds (BMI 25) and 28% body fat to 90 pounds (BMI 20) and 20% body fat in 10 months. October 2021 to August 2022. I couldn’t get warm worth a damn from subnormal body temperatures, and I lost my period at around 95 pounds.
Even so, a daily calorie intake of 1000-1200 per day on top of 2-3 miles of walking (daily activity and steps) would have eventually lead to relative energy deficiency (RED) at some point because I never knew about planning scheduled refeeding periods to mitigate the down-regulation in metabolism.
Especially when considering that my hunger signals are impaired due to my brain damage. My interception is about half as sensitive as normal. I don’t really feel stomach hunger until it’s very strong. Lots of times, I can hear the noise before I actually feel it. And I can’t say that I’ve ever identified satiety correctly before.
I didn't know that low-calorie interventions shouldn't be done for months at a time without proper nutritional supervision to prevent deficiencies.
Then I gained 20 pounds in 14 months from October 2022 to December 2023 (93 to 113) after having my previous IUD removed, stopping keto, and hormonal eating patterns once I realized that I had PMDD when my period resumed in July 2023 once I had gained back enough weight.

Now, I do my best to meet my keto macros and make sure that I get enough calories every day.
I try not to eat under 1200 kcal and keeping a food log helps keep me accountable that I’m not under-eating due to not feeling hungry. Logging for calorie accountability wasn’t something that I did last time in 2022, because I only cared about carb intake.
Looking back, there were a lot of logs where the daily calorie intake was under 1,000 and that’s not good in the long term. That’s something I’ll have to avoid doing this round. I also keep up with my electrolytes, because being in ketosis is very diuretic and sheds electrolytes quickly due the carb restriction.
However, my current diet is relatively… limited, to put it lightly. I mostly eat heavy cream in coffee, heavy-cream ice cream, full-fat cream cheese, eggs, and some kind of meat every day to meet my protein requirements. This isn’t the previous “beige diet” of my youth, but rather what I call a “heavy cream diet”.
I used to be hypersensitive to flavors and textures when I was younger, for example, I never ate salads before the age of 24, but that switch “flipped” when I started having reactive eating episodes when I was underweight.
I started eating sandwiches, spicy foods, and seafood, all of which were foods that I was previously very avoidant of, to the point of having anxiety attacks when seeing the shells in shellfish.
Those reactive eating episodes really showed the kind of primal need for food that malnutrition does to the brain, because the body needs a lot of calories to gain back weight while underweight.
Now, instead of avoiding fruit/veg and shellfish, I still avoid sweet fruits, starchy veggies, nuts/seeds, peanut butter, and any other kind of carb food.
I avoid eating because the food isn’t enjoyable anymore. Instead of being hypersensitive, it feels like I’m now hyposensitive, like I just have a general disinterest in food, apart from the usual low appetite. Even when I try to focus, sometimes I can’t mentally “taste” the food.
I can also eat and drink quickly because I can’t feel the food or liquid inside my stomach, which makes pacing difficult.
I’m also currently averse to cold coffee because my mouth just says no to for some reason, which may be because my mom explained that cold coffee is less acidic than hot coffee (she was a barista) and tastes different?
However, I will get what I call “vagus hunger” after passing a bowel movement, and I’ll get very hungry. It’s a very distinct feeling, and it’s one of the few times that I can clearly recognize the feeling of hunger.
I eat only one or two “meals” per day, not including the “fat boluses” like cream, oil, or butter that I eat straight or put in my coffee during the day to maintain my ketone levels. The fat helps because I have neurologically delayed bowel motility and I take GI meds to manage this.
By the way, I’m using “avoidant” to describe sensory overstimulation, and “averse” to describe choking/nausea symptoms, as that’s what I was previously taught in speech therapy when I when for a few sessions when I was 24 due to neurological swallowing spasms.
Does this sound like ARFID behaviors? OSFED? I don’t think OSFED because I don’t fall under the specific subtypes (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, purging). And EDNOS isn’t diagnosed anymore.
Where is the line between an “eating” disorder and a “feeding” disorder, if there is one? I was always told that my circumstances were FD related, not ED related, but no one ever explained the difference to me. Apparently, ARFID isn’t on the ED side, but rather the FD side?
At the mental health practice I’m currently with, the former psychiatrist left, and the practice is still waiting on a new one. But I want to bring this all to the attention of my psychologist, who knows about my longstanding feeding issues, and then the new psychiatrist, whenever they get hired.

This is due to impaired interception (internal body sensations) from neonatal brain damage. This brain damage was caused by a hemorrhage, which also caused cerebral palsy. I also have general anxiety disorder and depression.
As a child and teen, I definitely had ARFID behaviors, which were dismissed as picky eating behaviors. It’s just that “high-level” autism, ADHD, and ARFID wasn’t diagnosed in girls in the early 2000s.
I basically lived on a “beige diet” of cereal, bread, snack cakes, pasta, pizza, and some meat, like chicken strips or cheeseburgers. I wouldn’t eat sandwiches, eggs, seafood, fruits, or vegetables, except for peas and white potatoes.
I was somewhat underweight until high school, and I remember my mom would always offer me “chocolate milk” (Pediasure / Ensure) when I was younger. I then gained weight in high school due to depression and just generally eating processed food. At my highest weight in school, I was 135 pounds.
Here’s some backstory about where things started to shift. Trigger warning for numbers, skip over if needed.

That carb-heavy diet was up until I turned 24, when I first tried a keto diet for mental health. Things were going really well, until I eventually developed malnutrition from losing too much weight unintentionally. My height is 4’8” tall.
I went from 110 pounds (BMI 25) and 28% body fat to 90 pounds (BMI 20) and 20% body fat in 10 months. October 2021 to August 2022. I couldn’t get warm worth a damn from subnormal body temperatures, and I lost my period at around 95 pounds.
Even so, a daily calorie intake of 1000-1200 per day on top of 2-3 miles of walking (daily activity and steps) would have eventually lead to relative energy deficiency (RED) at some point because I never knew about planning scheduled refeeding periods to mitigate the down-regulation in metabolism.
Especially when considering that my hunger signals are impaired due to my brain damage. My interception is about half as sensitive as normal. I don’t really feel stomach hunger until it’s very strong. Lots of times, I can hear the noise before I actually feel it. And I can’t say that I’ve ever identified satiety correctly before.
I didn't know that low-calorie interventions shouldn't be done for months at a time without proper nutritional supervision to prevent deficiencies.
Then I gained 20 pounds in 14 months from October 2022 to December 2023 (93 to 113) after having my previous IUD removed, stopping keto, and hormonal eating patterns once I realized that I had PMDD when my period resumed in July 2023 once I had gained back enough weight.

Now, I do my best to meet my keto macros and make sure that I get enough calories every day.
I try not to eat under 1200 kcal and keeping a food log helps keep me accountable that I’m not under-eating due to not feeling hungry. Logging for calorie accountability wasn’t something that I did last time in 2022, because I only cared about carb intake.
Looking back, there were a lot of logs where the daily calorie intake was under 1,000 and that’s not good in the long term. That’s something I’ll have to avoid doing this round. I also keep up with my electrolytes, because being in ketosis is very diuretic and sheds electrolytes quickly due the carb restriction.
However, my current diet is relatively… limited, to put it lightly. I mostly eat heavy cream in coffee, heavy-cream ice cream, full-fat cream cheese, eggs, and some kind of meat every day to meet my protein requirements. This isn’t the previous “beige diet” of my youth, but rather what I call a “heavy cream diet”.
I used to be hypersensitive to flavors and textures when I was younger, for example, I never ate salads before the age of 24, but that switch “flipped” when I started having reactive eating episodes when I was underweight.
I started eating sandwiches, spicy foods, and seafood, all of which were foods that I was previously very avoidant of, to the point of having anxiety attacks when seeing the shells in shellfish.
Those reactive eating episodes really showed the kind of primal need for food that malnutrition does to the brain, because the body needs a lot of calories to gain back weight while underweight.
Now, instead of avoiding fruit/veg and shellfish, I still avoid sweet fruits, starchy veggies, nuts/seeds, peanut butter, and any other kind of carb food.
I avoid eating because the food isn’t enjoyable anymore. Instead of being hypersensitive, it feels like I’m now hyposensitive, like I just have a general disinterest in food, apart from the usual low appetite. Even when I try to focus, sometimes I can’t mentally “taste” the food.
I can also eat and drink quickly because I can’t feel the food or liquid inside my stomach, which makes pacing difficult.
I’m also currently averse to cold coffee because my mouth just says no to for some reason, which may be because my mom explained that cold coffee is less acidic than hot coffee (she was a barista) and tastes different?
However, I will get what I call “vagus hunger” after passing a bowel movement, and I’ll get very hungry. It’s a very distinct feeling, and it’s one of the few times that I can clearly recognize the feeling of hunger.
I eat only one or two “meals” per day, not including the “fat boluses” like cream, oil, or butter that I eat straight or put in my coffee during the day to maintain my ketone levels. The fat helps because I have neurologically delayed bowel motility and I take GI meds to manage this.
By the way, I’m using “avoidant” to describe sensory overstimulation, and “averse” to describe choking/nausea symptoms, as that’s what I was previously taught in speech therapy when I when for a few sessions when I was 24 due to neurological swallowing spasms.
Does this sound like ARFID behaviors? OSFED? I don’t think OSFED because I don’t fall under the specific subtypes (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, purging). And EDNOS isn’t diagnosed anymore.
Where is the line between an “eating” disorder and a “feeding” disorder, if there is one? I was always told that my circumstances were FD related, not ED related, but no one ever explained the difference to me. Apparently, ARFID isn’t on the ED side, but rather the FD side?
At the mental health practice I’m currently with, the former psychiatrist left, and the practice is still waiting on a new one. But I want to bring this all to the attention of my psychologist, who knows about my longstanding feeding issues, and then the new psychiatrist, whenever they get hired.

My husband and I just moved into our first home a little over a year ago and we made fast friends with an older couple that lives across the street from us. They are super nice and whenever we go out of town, they are kind enough to check in on our pets for us and vice versa.
Yesterday I was looking after their dog while they were gone for the day. My one job was to go check on her a few times throughout the day and let her out to go potty, then at 5pm she needed her dinner. I made a huge mistake and scheduled a roof inspection for the same day, and well, long story short...I forgot to go feed the dog.
My meds had worn off by the time the roof inspection started and I was so hyperfocused on that, that I just totally spaced. I feel horrible. They got home about and hour and a half after her dinner time and noticed that the food was still sitting there. I have apologized profusely and they said that she was fine and that I shouldn't worry about it, but I just can't believe I forgot. I'm still just so disappointed in myself- they always take such good care of our pets and I feel like I really dropped the ball on this one.
