Oxnard dining

I’m impressed!

2024.04.26 03:43 Brilliant_Command206 I’m impressed!

I’m finishing up my Coast Starlight trip from LA to Seattle and back. Currently we’re almost to Oxnard. This was my first long distance train trip ever. I’ve ridden the train before down to San Diego, but that’s it. I rode in coach the whole way, and the seats are great. I brought many snacks, but grabbed a few things in the cafe car. Prices weren’t that bad. A couple gripes- I barely could sleep (but that might just be my problem), dining car prices seemed a little high for coach passengers, and we’ve had no WiFi on either train. Other than that, I’ve had a great time and the sights are absolutely incredible! I would totally do this again, but maybe opt for a sleeper next time. Just wanted to share my experience.
Thanks!

2023.09.13 09:21 jackmag17 Places to eat LA, Solvang, Oxnard?

Places to eat? Planning a trip at the end of October for our anniversary and last trip till our baby gets here. Looking for places to eat in LA, Oxnard/Ventura and solvang. I was born and raised in Oxnard till I was 13 and moved to the rural south. My wife really has never experienced foods from different cultures so brownie points for best places to eat that aren’t your run of the mill steak, bbq or anything available in the south. I’m not looking for fine dining or some where known for wine/liquor since the wife can’t drink.
LA for 2-3 days (will be staying in W Hollywood) Oxnard for 1 day (there are places I remember eating as a kid but looking for advise) Solvang for 1 day ( one meal will be at pea soup andersens) Anaheim for 1 day
Fast food recommendations are welcome also. The wife wants to eat at in n out so that will fit in some where along our travels. We will be visiting the Santa Monica pier, Venice beach and possibly Malibu if we don’t go to Anaheim.

2022.07.12 03:42 maizypaloma Free bulky item Recycling/Donation centers in Oxnard?

Hey guys! So I’m from The Bay but I’ve been keeping some furniture at a family member’s house in Oxnard that I wanted to get rid of. Just a crappy bed frame, dining table, and mattress that’s still in good condition. Do you guys know of any (preferably free) recycling or donation centers in the area? I’ve been trying to find some but I might just have to leave my stuff in a random dumpster 😂

2021.05.25 23:27 h4ngedm4n Cinnamon Rolls Overall Rankings

I realized the old top ten list was not going to serve the purpose of a ranked sort as I continually add more reviews. For the same reason as before, since my scoring system doesn't separate the truly amazing rolls from the average ones, I decided to make a ranked list. My ranking is based on which I would rather buy, rather than which I would rather have for free. This is different from special occasions, where the costly but photogenic Cinnaholic roll would be more suitable than the high value Costco roll. Additionally, I remove distance as an issue, and pretend they are all available at an imaginary store next door.

2021.02.17 03:08 MikeForVentura Recap, City Council mtg 2/8: Cannabis, Interview process, Main Street Moves

Ventura City Council met on Monday, February 8. The minutes have not been approved but there is a video of the meeting if you want the complete record, and I’d be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability about the meeting or the process or my new kitten or whatever.
Consent Items Not much to say about the consent calendar. These are things that generally don’t require much discussion, such as replacing some air conditioning equipment at the Police/Fire HQ.
12A, Cannabis Council voted 4-2 to allow up to five retail dispensaries, with a 600’ buffer around K-12 schools, and up to ten industrial businesses.
Voting for: Deputy Mayor Joe Schroeder (District 7), Lorrie Brown (D6), Jim Friedman (D5), Doug Halter (D2).
Voting against: Mayor Sofia Rubalcava (D1), me (D3).
Background Council was reluctantly wrestling with cannabis for years, even before Prop 64. In October, staff suggested five retail shops allowed 600' from K-12 schools, daycare and youth centers. Council said two dispensaries max, 1000' buffers. Then in November, Ventura voters overwhelmingly passed an 8% tax on cannabis if Council decides to allow dispensaries. A few weeks later, some of the Councilmembers advocated for two dispensaries max, adding 1000' buffers around parks, playgrounds, libraries, and the College as well. But they couldn't agree, so it was held over for the new Council, which went with 600' around K-12 schools only.
My Vote I voted against this not because I’m opposed to retail cannabis or because of buffer zones, but because we are doing it for the revenue. There are other, better reasons to do it, but if you start with one of those (personal liberty, economic development, law enforcement/black market) you end up with a different policy, because you’re aiming for a different outcome. And, I don’t think the revenue will be close to what our consultant forecasts ($200k per year per dispensary). Now, his forecast was for two dispensaries, and we’ll have up to five, so the total revenues will surely be greater than the $400k predicted for two. But with Port Hueneme’s existing dispensaries, and Oxnard permitting something like 16, nobody is going to see the sort of revenue that Port Hueneme has enjoyed by having the only dispensaries in the area. I doubt we’ll see anything close to a million dollars in tax revenue but I’ve been wrong many, many times. I'd like to see us use cannabis money to fund not just enforcement/compliance but also drug/alcohol/nicotine education and cessation programs for youth.
Also, we’ll also have to pay an outside firm to manage it all, and I’ve not heard any hint how much they will take off the top. The big picture is, I’m concerned that during a budget crunch, it’s too easy to pass a questionable policy that promises revenue.
What’s Next This will come back to Council for a second reading, as part of the consent calendar on Mon 2/22. Theoretically it could be amended, but that rarely happens. It will take several months to set up the licensing process, but maybe by the end of the year we’ll have some applicants. I would guess we’ll see our first dispensary next year. Revenues won't start rolling in for a couple years.
13A, Council Goals Put off to a later date
13B, Interview process for District 4 applicants If you haven’t heard, Councilmember Erik Nasarenko (District 4, mostly east of Victoria & north of the 126) resigned last month after being appointed Interim DA. Our city charter gives the Council two options: appoint somebody within 30 days, or hold a special election. Unfortunately, the soonest we could have a special election would be November, and we can’t appoint somebody in the interim. (I was quoted in the VC Star as saying we have two “terrible” options but the actual word I used instead of Terrible was more colorful in the sense that brown is a color.)
So we are going to try to appoint somebody. I have no idea whether we will; with six on the council there may be no candidate who can get four votes. With two "terrible" options I think we have to explore both.
What's Next The East Ventura Community Council will be hosting a candidate forum Thursday, Feb 18, at 7pm. https://www.eastventura.org
About 14 District 4 residents are vying for it. This Saturday, we'll have a Special Meeting, starting at 9am. We’ll ask every candidate the same questions, then take public comments, then deliberate, then vote, then probably more deliberating and voting. If we do appoint somebody, they'll be sworn in immediately.
If we don't appoint somebody on Saturday, we could just give up, or we could hold a second Special Meeting on Wednesday, Feb 24, with more deliberating and voting. If we don't appoint somebody before 2/25, the seat will be empty until final results are certified from the November election and a replacement is sworn in. (So, Decemberish. I didn't have my first real meeting until Jan 11 of this year.)
Continuation of Main Street Moves Permit The original permit expires this month; staff recommendation was to extend it to August 31. Councilmember Schroeder moved to extend it to Dec 31, which Downtown Ventura Partners was asking for; I made a friendly amendment to extend it to Jan 7 so they could have use of the street for New Years Eve. Passed unanimously.
As I said on another post, making the closure permanent would take a lot of work, and not everybody wants it made permanent. I can’t say whether or not I’d support making it permanent until we see how it works post-pandemic and after studying the issue, collecting data, and talking to the residents and business owners who are directly impacted by it. If we were to try to make it permanent, we would be legally required to do a traffic study and whole bunch of other stuff. Parking is a huge concern. Personally, though, I will say that I look forward to trying it out when it’s safer to dine out. My wife uses a wheelchair, and Main Street has not been the easiest place to get around.
Next Council Meeting Special Meeting, Saturday Feb 20, 9am. Potentially appointing somebody to serve as the District 4 Councilmember. The agenda at https://www.cityofventura.ca.gov/AgendaCenter also includes instructions on how to watch, participate, or submit written comments for the record.
Next Regular Council Meeting Monday, Feb 22, 6pm. The agenda should be posted in a couple days at the link above. It will likely include the second reading of the Cannabis ordinance, perhaps Council Goals, and maybe an agenda item about approving a Tourism Marketing District.

2020.12.15 01:59 StealthRedditer Questions for and Opinions from r/Amtrak

tl;dr in bold
Any thought, opinions, or insights would be appreciated.
We've never ridden Amtrak, but fell in love with train travel going down Copper Canyon when we were living in Mexico. We are planning a mammoth trip to visit the beauty of America on Amtrak and in the national parks. Our current path is City of New Orleans from Memphis to the New Orleans, Sunset Limited to LA, Coast Starlight to Seattle, the Empire Builder to Chicago, and then the City of New Orleans south to Memphis. 45 days, 13 Segments, 22 national parks. Stops in New Orleans, Alpine Tx, El Paso Tx, Tucson AZ, LA, San Jose, Klamath Falls OR, Seattle, Essex MT, Williston ND, St Paul MN, Chicago, and Memphis. We are working on an early retirement plan for sometime next year so this is either late summer 2021 or more probably in 2022. Since some of our stops don't have baggage service, we'll be all carry-on.
I understand, even with a 45 day rail pass, you have to book each segment separately. Is there any way / advantage to upgrading the entire trip to rooomette?
I have been disappointed that the dining has been downgraded to delta-on-the-rails (big thank-you to u/LumpyMclarson for an excellent review of the current culinary offerings - - it made me feel better). Has there been any discussion of bringing back chef-cooked cuisine?
We will likely rent a car at each stop. We were considering not re-boarding the train in Tucson and turn the rental car into a on-way rental from Tucson to Oxnard CA. Instead of hiking Saguaro NP then re-boarding, going to LA and backtracking to hike Joshua Tree NP then to Channel Islands NP to re-board the train in LA; we would leave the Sunset Limited in Tucson, hike those three parks and board the Coast Starlight in Oxnard, CA. If you miss the Tucson to LA section of the Sunset Limited or the LA to Oxnard section of the Coast Starlight, have you missed some fabulous section of the trip that you would regret? We are also considering not re-boarding the City of New Orleans on the return home from Chicago and do a one way rental home with a stop at Gateway Arch NP. We have to do a one-way rental home either way (from Memphis or Chicago) and considering that section of the City of New Orleans is at night I don't think we'll miss much. In addition because of the timing of the Empire builder into, and The City of New Orleans out of, Chicago, it leaves us with some time to kill (in on Thursday, out late Saturday; and we were only allowing one day of hiking at Indiana Dunes NP).
I have no idea of which side of the train or position (front, back, top, or bottom) would be best for any of the trip. Any thoughts about which roomettes (position within the car) are best to book?
Is it relatively easy to get seats in the observation car or do you have to scheme and strategize (we don't want to monopolize but we would like to enjoy)?
We plan to book early and at least one of us get the BoA Amtrak credit card for the discounts and travel points. Do you have any money saving strategies you would share? The trip is the main thing but money is, well, money.
I'll probably post a re-write of this to r /nationalpark for ideas of where to stay, which hikes not to miss, and local restaurants to try; but I'd take any advice on these things from here as well. Thanks for reading.

edit:
Thanks for everyone's input. I'm sure I'll have more questions and I hope after our trip will be able to contribute, not just take, from this community. Thanks again.

2015.03.14 02:18 Katzlan Detailed description of a 6 day roadtrip from LA to San Fran. Any suggestions on where to go or what to eliminate?

Below is a pretty detailed itinerary of my road trip from Tucson to San Fran and back. Any suggestions, comments, or tips are totally welcome! We are 4 people about to graduate college so we are trying to do stuff 21 year olds would find fun while still taking everything in! I also tried to cut out unnecessary travel details to keep this short so I didn't explain the duration of our at places and just moved on to when we would arrive at the next place. Hopefully this little trip entertains you enough to send help, or inspires you to plan one!! :)
Day 1 - May 1st (Friday)
Arrive at Venice beach around 3pm. Arrive at LACMA around 6:30pm (we aren't huge into art so we only planned for 1.5 hours here). Arrive in Hollywood around 8:15pm and drive around seeing sights. Eat dinner around 9pm at city walk.
Day 2 - May 2nd (Saturday)
This is our day of driving, so if you have tips of where to stop from LA to San Fran they would be helpful! We essentially planned out our driving route so that we could get some awesome views off PCH without spending the whole time on it and see some other things along the way.
Have breakfast in Malibu and get on the road to San Fran by 10am. Coastal route through Malibu via PCH for 1.5 hours. Merge at Oxnard to get on 101 for 50 mins (should we stop for strawberries or for a stretch at rincon beach?). Get on inland route via CA HWY 154 for 45mins (good places to stop and eat in Los Ovilos?). Continue to St Louis Obispo for 1 hour (anyone hear of the santa maria tri tip for eating? should we stop at pismo beach here as opposed to rincon beach earlier?) Continue to San Jose for 2 hours and 45 mins (should we take an hour detour for Valley of Oaks? anyone been there/have opinions on it?). Drive though Silicon Valley (anything to see here?) for 55 minutes and arrive in San Fran! Check into hotel, grab dinner (suggestions?), nightlife (suggestions?).
Day 3, May 3rd (Sunday)
Find breakfast (suggestions?). Head to aquarium and exploritorium with plans to leave by 2pm (any suggestions on how much time we need at each, which to goto first or spend a longer time at?). Walk around pier 39 for 15 mins, take cable card to fishermans wharf for lunch (dining suggestions?), cable car to ghiradelli square, cable car to lombard street. Then we plan to head to the Flibert steps and need to decide if we should pick the car up from the aquarium area before or after the steps, does anyone know much about parking in the area? Finally we are definitely heading to China town and considering North beach as well, anyone have suggestions on which one has a really good restaurant for dinner?
Day 4, May 4th (Monday) Go check out the golden gate bridge. Do a tour of Alcatraz. Then we will be heading to the baseball game at 7:15pm and probably leaving it by 9pm to hit the road and take the fast 6 hour route back to LA. I know its not the best to drive through the night and tire ourselves out, but we figure if we are sleeping by 4am in LA and be ready to roll around noon it is better than leaving San Fran in the morning and not getting to LA till 4pm. In between Alcatraz and the baseball game we have a lot of down time and freedom for exploring. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe something we wouldn't have found in the countless "top 20 things to see" articles we've been reading.
Day 5 - May 5th (Tuesday) Our morning is pretty free. On my list of things we might so I've got Wayferers chapel, the great wall of LA, and Jurrassic Technology, does anyone have any suggestions of things to do? We can't do anything too far away like a hike because we're planning to get 3pm (and you have to be there an hour early) tickets to Conan or Jimmy Kimmel (which also raises the questions of: which is more fun to see live??). At night we plan in heading to the Santa Monica pier to have dinner (dining suggestions?).
Day 6, May 6th (Wednesday) We are thinking of either hiking the hollywood hills or heading to the San Diego zoo. We'd like to get back on the road to Tucson by at least 6pm, if not earlier. Any suggestions on which would be better? Or if we can handle both in one day? And any notes on what the hollywood hills hike is like and how long it is?
Some last notes:
