I’m currently on the waitlist for Denison and have received a preliminary financial aid package after a call with an admissions director today.
I would have to pay ~$17k for tuition, housing, and food. My estimated cost of attendance which includes books, transportation, and miscellaneous items, would be $21k after grants have been applied. My EFC is ~3900.
I’m not sure what I want to major in, but I applied for computer science. However, I’m thinking about switching to finance economics and doing pre-law. I’m comparing Denison vs. the A&M Engineering Academy which would be significantly cheaper (for my first year, the cost would probably be $5k at most since I’m living at home). I love what I’ve read and seen so far about Denison, but I’m not sure if I can justify the cost to my parents. Obviously, I’m going to find a job while schooling so hopefully that would alleviate the burden a bit. Any thoughts or help on deciding?
I had a terrible high school experience and hoped things would get better in college, but that never materialized. I am graduating this spring from UCLA with a degree in electrical engineering, and I got nothing from my college experience.
I never made any friends or been to any parties. I been rejected from every club, club sport, frat, organization, social group, and internships. I am graduating in a ton of debt with no job opportunities because it is impossible to find an engineering job with no internships. I am incredibly mad and upset with how my time in college went, and I don’t understand what went so incredibly wrong. I actively feel depressed because of how my time in college went.
I have no future. I can’t find any jobs now and got rejected from the military. I don’t know what to do
Hi, I’m currently a junior in high school and I am interested in electrical engineering and computer science. I put myself a goal to learn python and java or ate least get a foundation for both during this school year and this summer. What are the best resources or methods to learn both? Thanks.

Riven grimaced as another torpedo exploded far too close to the tiny vessel, she was aiding what was left of the Alandran crew through the retreat from the Oort Cloud. Three chaff torpedoes left, after that, they would be defenseless. “Shields down to twenty five percent Captain. I don’t think we’re going to make it to the planetary defenses.”
Captain Jan’Inar gritted her teeth and tapped on the arm controls of her command chair, “Engineering, tell me we have the ripple drive back up?” There was no response from her request.
“Captain, the chief engineer is dead, and the ship is so riddled with holes and fires I doubt communications are reaching engineering.” Riven said with a sigh. Then was forced to launch two chaff missiles towards the four enemy missiles that were bearing down on the Rivendell with monstrous acceleration.
The torpedoes attempted to corkscrew around their interceptor, but their dim AI’s were no match for Riven, who detonated the bomb pumped masers through the defractors with millimeter precision over three kilometers away, reducing them to slag. “We have one chaff torpedo left Captain, no ripple drive, half the crew is out of the fight.”
She watched as Captain Jan’Inar looked down through the floor monitors, the hulk of the
Isengard was three hundred kilometers in the Z axis. “Riven, get us to the
Isengard, use whatever maneuvering is necessary.”
Riven shrugged internally, she didn’t see how getting to the wreck would help, they were still ahead of the last two Trinar scout vessels, but hiding amongst the wreckage wouldn’t help. “Aye Captain, making for the wreck.”
A giant explosion appeared in one of the starboard monitors, one of the ones that wasn’t flickering off and on that is. “What the hell was that?” Jan’Inar asked Riven.
It took her a mil to process the incoming data, half her external sensors were either gone or malfunctioning. “That was the Trinar cruiser’s reactor exploding from nearly five light minutes away, the
Missive managed to take her out, but she’s heavily damaged.”
Looking in the forward view screen the wreckage that was once Isengard was coming up fast, “Captain, we will arrive at the wreckage in twelve seconds, what do you want to do?”
The Captain sat back in her chair and answered, “Take us under the wreckage and put it between us our pursuers. Force them to go around the wreckage, and when they do, use the last chaff torpedo to hit one of the four fusion reactors of the
Isengard.”
Riven smiled, that was Alex level deviousness. Also, quite a problem, three ships on different vectors, one near stationary wreck, and then the torpedo itself, which isn’t designed for precision, more like a shotgun blast. She cranked her frame-rate to maximum and her ship VR faded to just raw windows. Even at her maximum processing speed the calculations took agonizing milliseconds.
“Firing chaff torpedo three now!” The heavily damaged ship shuddered a bit as the last torpedo roared from its launch tube. It took nearly three seconds to reach the wreckage and detonate, an eternity to Riven. She watched as the bomb pumped masers sliced through the containment bottle, releasing the hellish energy and pressure at the heart of a star.
The explosion turned the wreckage into atoms, then lanced out in a sphere engulfing both Trinar ships in white hot plasma, obliterating them in the maelstrom. Then the shockwave from the explosion lashed out into space in every direction at the speed of light. The
Rivendell was struck from behind, the ship staggered, her torch drives melted, and the lights went out.

Kara ended the simulation, both Alandran ships returned to normal operating duty. She opened up a channel to both Captains, letting Izzy and Riven broadcast her report to the crews. “First the good news, the enemy fleet was destroyed and the
Missive and
Rivendell survived to fight another day. Now the bad news, the
Isengard was lost with all hands, which could have been avoided if you both stuck together and allowed your point defenses to overlap. All this means we’re going to be running another simulation tomorrow.”
She could hear both crews groan at the announcement before she continued, “I will be providing Riven and Izzy with the battlefield data, I expect you all to spend the next few hours going over where you could do better.”
Then Alex’s face appeared on all monitors in both ships, “We beat them this time, but I won’t be satisfied until we beat them every time. Go over the after action reports, come up with some new ideas, and get some rest before we tackle this again tomorrow. Also, I want to congratulate the crew of the
Rivendell for lateral thinking.” Then the monitors all reverted back to their normal duty.
Alex looked over to Kara, “They’re getting better.”
Kara nibbled at a chip, “They’re not getting better fast enough. We know what we’re dealing with when it comes to the Howron ships, but the Trinar as you’ve taken to calling them are still a complete mystery. They may be even more dangerous than we’ve extrapolated them to be.”
Alex rubbed the back of his neck, “And they may be far weaker than we think, look, we can only do the best we can. We can’t really fault the
Isengard crew, they’re even greener than the
Rivendell.”
Kara nodded walking around the buffet table, “I’m really worried Alex, we have three ships at the moment, two of them with new crews and new AI’s. The forth will be online in a week, and I need to start focusing on producing and training a new AI.”
Alex held her lightly around the waist, “Getting the forth ship and it’s AI up is more important than these simulations, I’ll deal with them, you do what you do best?”
“Play Mother to everyone?” She asked?
Alex grinned down to her, “Well someone has to be the adult around here, and it ain’t gonna be me.”
She looked up to him, “They listen to you more than you know.”
“Poor kids.” He said as he leaned down to kiss her.
Kara spun away from his embrace and went back to the holo-tank, “Speaking of adults, it looks like we finally received an error free scan of Kel’Taraan’s mind.”
Alex came up beside her to look into the holo, it showed the docking area where the ships repair crew would normally be housed during refits. In the common area sat the Stasis pods with Kel’Taraan and Mon’Kelron, the former of which had received the medical nanobots that would repair her internal damage while she stayed in stasis, they were nearly done repairing the damage.
He turned to Kara, “Have we finished constructing the matrix yet?”
Kara shook her head, “Four failed attempts, today will be attempt number five, I’ve slowed down the print head on the auto factory to it’s lowest rate, in a few hours it will be done, then I have to put it through pass/fail checks and cross my fingers.”
Alex sighed, “Yeah, they told me about the hardest thing for an auto factory to make was the print heads for another auto factory, something biological, or a replicant matrix. Makes sense that we’d have difficulty now, as we build in space, not a sterile lab environment.”
Kara swiped at the holo, showing a video of the construction process of the matrix. “If this one doesn’t work I may have to build a lab around an auto factory and provide the gravity and sterile environment, these things take forever to construct.”
Alex studied the table for a snack, “Oh, you think we may have more matrix’s to build in the future?”
Kara looked over to Alex a little exasperated, “Once the genie is out of the bottle, I expect we may find we need to make quite a few of these.”
He rubbed his chin in thought, “We’ve asked Kel’Taraan to keep the knowledge of replication secret, I’m pretty sure she’ll do so.”
She looked back at him shaking her head, “You know as well as I do that something like this won’t stay secret forever.”
Alex nodded and sighed as he looked down, “Yeah, you’re right. Something will slip, intentionally or unintentionally. Best plan for it in the future.”
“And that brings up the next question, what do we do with Mon’Kelron?” Kara asked.
Alex looked at Kara a bit confused, “We let the medical nannites finish working on her and we keep her on ice until we can drop her back off on the planet.”
Kara shook her head, “No, that will stir up even more suspension in the Alandrans, who already think we are mysterious. She needs to be let out for observation or something before we put her back into stasis.”
“Well, you’re busy getting the new AI up and running and getting the matrix built, I’m busy with the simulations, Riven and Izzy are running ships and working with crews, that leaves Monty. Where is she anyways?”
“Personal project, she’s been working on a particle accelerator model that will be easier to build around the first planet, using material from the first planet.” Kara answered.
Alex frowned, “How would that work? We need an accelerator large enough to circle the star to make the exotic materials we need.”
Kara grinned, knowingly, “Remember that this universe is more energetic than our original universe? Monty figures that she can get by with one that encircles the first planet at twenty thousand kilometers and with about fifty loops around the accelerator we can get the necessary velocities to create the required materials.”
“Okay, so a smaller accelerator, we figured what, a century out to get one built around the star, how long will this take?” He asked.
Kara shrugged, “We had to make an estimated guess, but since the supply line would be vastly shortened by harvesting the planet with mining drones we figure two to three years before it would be operational, assuming we move one quarter of all mining drones to the first planet.”
Alex nodded, “Much more feasible. However, you haven’t mentioned probable yield.”
Kara sighed, “Yeah, less than a tenth what a proper accelerator would produce, but if we use most of the production for manufacturing nannites and substitute other materials for armor or hull we could still build some of the heavy cruisers you have the prints for.”
Alex looked down to the table and found some boneless buffalo wings, snatching the small bowl and cradling it he commented. “Well, three and a half years to build the first heavy cruiser isn’t too bad. Granted we have to build a full sized shipyard in that time frame as well. We aren’t going to churn one out in the scaled down models you two came up with.”
Kara nodded, “Already on the production schedule as well.”
Taking a big bite out of the buffalo wing, Alex sent Monty a message. “Would you be so kind as to join us at the buffet table?”
Monty faded in beside Kara, “What’s up with the big guy using all formal messaging?” She asked.
Alex swallowed, “What? I can be elegant and shit too you know.”
Monty rolled her eyes, “There’s the Alex I know. I’m assuming you need me to do something boring?”
Kara answered before Alex could make another quip. “We need you to baby sit Mon’Kelron for a bit. She needs to think that she is inside the ship so she doesn’t think anything strange is going on, particularly with Kel’Taraan.”
Monty tapped her chin, “Um, the hanger bay where they are being stored is separate from the rest of the ship. Only our two androids are located there in pods, how do I explain that she can’t go beyond that point?”
Alex spoke up while Kara was trying to come up with an answer, “Simple, you tell her she is in quarantine on board our vessel, let her know you have been decontaminated but it’s a long process and I’m too busy to go through it right now.”
Monty nodded, than smiled, “Can I wear a cute nurses outfit?”
Alex shook his head, “Fine, just sell her on the story and keep her occupied while she is under ‘observation’, then get her back into the stasis pod.”
Monty did a salute that was fairly close to an insult and faded out.

Kel’Taraan awoke suddenly, there was no slowly drifting into consciousness, it was as if she had been startled awake. Looking around she saw only darkness, where was she? Was she dead? Were the humans unsuccessful in turning her into a replicant? Then she saw light, just two glowing blue eyes at first, then the silhouette of a petite woman brown hair down to her shoulders.
Then the rest of her faded into view, she wore a uniform similar to what all Humans wore, more practical than formal. Then she spoke, “Hello Kel’Taraan, I am Kara, it is nice to finally meet you.”
“It is nice to finally meet the legendary Kara. This must mean the process worked, what will happen to my old body?” She asked
Kara brought up what looked like a cylindrical hologram and was touching icons, the world around her faded in to what appeared to be a comfortable house. “It was destroyed before you were activated, otherwise you would not be the closest continuer, but a mere copy of yourself.”
Kel’Taraan was a little taken aback, “Closest continuer? Why destroy my old body?” She wasn’t sure why she should care if her old body was gone, but for some reason she did.
Kara finished fiddling with her hologram and it faded away, now they were sitting in a quite nice cottage, complete with a fireplace and bookshelves full of leather bound books. “Short answer, the No-Hiding theorem states that like matter or energy, information can neither be created nor destroyed, simply moved or transmuted. The information that made up ‘you’ cannot exist at the same time that your replicant was activated or you would be two different people with the same memories.”
Kel’Taraan nodded, “So to ensure it would really be ‘me’ who awoke, the original vessel had to be destroyed to ensure only one copy of the information was available?”
Kara nodded, “Correct, although it is much more complex than that, and still under some debate, that is the reigning theory of closest continuer.”
“So what do I do now?” Kel’Taraan asked.
Kara smiled, “Now we start training you on how to be a replicant. I have given you a private virtual reality environment, it should be close to the little cottage in the picture frames in your room.”
Kel’Taraan looked around and found that it was very similar. This was the cottage that she and her Emmet had looked at purchasing so long ago. She reached down and rubbed the ornate leather chair she was standing behind. It was only at this moment did she notice she was not hunched over, her back did not hurt, and she needed no cane.
Looking down at her hands they were without wrinkle or age spot, the skin was soft and taunt. She looked around and found a mirror by the front door, and in it she barely recognized the face, it was her, nearly four centuries ago.
“How?” She asked as she turned back around to Kara.
Kara summoned some keldaran hot tea and two small cups on the coffee table before sitting in the other leather bound chair by the fireplace. “Our spy devices in the palace found pictures of you when you were young, we extrapolated a three dimensional form for you to inhabit here.”
Kel’Taraan nodded as she walked back to the empty leather armchair, she noticed her hair was blonde once more, no longer silver. Sitting down she looked at the beverage choice, “Fair warning, that stuff tastes like battery acid, I have no idea how the Empress drinks it, could I try your coffee once more? It has been so long!”
Kara grinned, and waved away the Alandran style crockery and replaced it with a coffee pot and two coffee mugs, along with cream and sugar. Pouring a cup for Kel’Taraan and offering cream and sugar, which she accepted and raised it to her face to inhaled the aroma. “This brings back memories.” She stated, tearing up a bit.
After taking a sip of the Human brew she sat it back down on the coffee table. “I suppose since I am in the company of Humans once more you find our naming schemes a bit aggravating?”
Kara shrugged, “It doesn’t bother me, although Alex wishes he could shorten your names from time to time.”
Kel’Taraan nodded, “The first Human crew called me Kelly, I think I would like to go by that again.”
“Kelly it is then, I’m sure Alex will be pleased.” Kara stated while taking her own sip from her coffee.
They both sat there for a moment, just enjoying the silence and the beverage, before Kara spoke up. “I want you to get comfortable here in your cottage, if you want I can help you change your VR environment at any time. You probably don’t realize it yet but you and I are operating at millisecond resolution at the moment.”
Waving her hand a small menu appeared before Kelly, showing her how the frame-jacking system worked. Kara continued, “I’ve given you access to this menu, and more will follow in the next day, which can be as short or as long as you choose.”
Kelly thought for a moment, “So at our default frame-rate, a single millisecond lasts..” (11.57 days) A slider appeared above the frame-jack menu.
Kara nodded, “We all experience time differently than biological creatures, we can experience lifetimes in days, or we can stretch a single day into milliseconds.”
Kelly nodded, “Seems like I have a lot to learn.”
Kara put down her coffee cup, “That you do, and for that reason you have this library, inside these volumes are the culmination of Human knowledge and culture.”
Surprised, she raised an eyebrow, “Doesn’t seem like a lot of books compared to the Imperial library on Alandra.”
Pulling the first tome off the top shelf she handed it to Kelly, “Open this.”
Taking the amazingly immaculate leather bound tome she opened it and her mind was awash in chaos. Words, symbols, numbers, letters, ideas, constructs, abstractions and so much more flooded her very essence. Then it was gone, replaced only by a floating bar above the now closed book. It stated, “IMPRINTING INFORMATION 2%”.
Looking up at a Kara she whispered, “What just happened?”
Kara sat back down and crossed her long legs, “You just downloaded the contents of that tome, several yottabytes of data, now your matrix has to make sense of it, hence the imprinting information bar. I will leave you now to consume the contents of this library, after that you should have the basics of everything you need to know about Humans and our technology.”
And with that Kara faded out of Kelly’s VR space. She looked down at her book, 6% complete, this was going to take a while… or was it? She smiled and reached for her frame-jack slider.

My
Patreon, or if you really like my work, my
Ream I still got A levels, did an apprenticeship and got into Uni with a full paid scholarship.
This sub keeps getting recommended to me and I have seen a lot of people stressing about them. I am not from the UK but moved at 16. I never got the chance to take GCSEs and failed my countries equivalent meaning I had absolutely no qualifications. I was still allowed to take A levels. After A levels, I chose to do an apprenticeship. They asked me about my maths and English and I was able to provide a level maths which they accepted but the C1 Camebridge English I did was not accepted. So I was going to do English as part of my apprenticeship. However I dropped out before I was able to finish it because I applied to University.
My University asked me for my GCSEs and I just didn't provide them. They didn't bother asking me again and accepted me anyway. I was then also accepted for a scholarship that paid all of my tuition and gave me some money to buy study materials on top.
GCSEs are not everything and when I failed my countries equivalent I thought it was all over and I would have to work as a waitress for the rest of my life, but it turns out, nobody really cares if you can show them that you are willing to put work in and that you are not a complete idiot. The great thing about the UK is that you can also do your GCSEs in the future. You will have to pay to be registered into the exam but you won't have to go to school since there is enough information about the material online. And if you fail Maths or English, someone else (in my case the apprenticeship or certain programmes you can register for) will pay for them.
Im gonna get an inflatable pool and take it camping, fill it up with water from a nearby lake or river (through the use of a 12v pump) and then grab a coil of copper rubbing that I can place on top of a fire nearby. The pump forces water through the hot copper coil, so hot water comes out into the inflatable pool.
I can now enjoy an artificial hot spring with a view next to my campground or directly next to the very cold river. I think this would work even better when camping in an alpine mountain near water bodies that are too cold to take a dip in. I can imagine the bliss of sitting in a hot tub while in the snowy mountains with no one around to bother me.
Doable? Any engineers that wanna pitch in a fix or tip? Only problem I can think of is getting a pool that won't get damaged by the hot water, maybe managing to pump water great distances (100+feet?). K thx 😊 🙏
One thing that has me excited about JJ is his athletic ability. His 3 cone time (measuring agility and change of direction) was sixth best at the combine among all positions and was faster than Rome Odunze.
I’ve always shit on Kirk for the 4th down throw against the Giants, but I was looking at a freeze frame at the time he threw it, and I don’t think it’s as much a bad decision as just a good example of Kirk’s Achilles heel as a QB: lack of escapability due to athletic limitations that aren’t his fault. He was born with a top 10 throwing arm in the world (not 10 strongest but strong enough and great accuracy), but not born with the legs to wiggle out of trouble.
Looking at the freeze frame, here’s my thoughts:
1) he obviously wants Jefferson but if he throws there it will be a pure jump ball situation and JJ would be in the worse position for the ball.
2) KJ is open in the post but Kirk waited to see if the best WR in the league was going to have a chance and now it’s too late.
3) his eyes already on that side, Hock is the only other choice before getting sacked.
4) however, the pressure wasn’t as bad as remember it. The inside guy is getting there but everyone else is blocked. A more athletic QB could step up a beat before this throw and then he has the whole left side of the field available to run along the LOS and get that lone defender isolated. Cook could block that guy for the QB to run, Cook could run out and be wide open if the defender goes after the QB, or other receivers may get open running school yard stuff after their initial route.
5) Tom Brady (who also shouldn’t try to step up and then escape left) would slide forward just inside the RT and hit Osborn.
I’m definitely not saying Kirk should have tried to escape up and left. He’s not that guy. And I’m not holding it against him that’s he’s not Tom Brady, the best ever at avoiding the rush without being athletic and instead doing precise slides into open space. Kirk is gone and I’m not here to shit on him.
But I am saying JJ’s athletic ability gives me hope that this play would have a different outcome. Now I’m just praying he can do everything else as well as Cousins and if so, we’re rollin’.
Before I write anything else, I want to say right off the bat: I strongly doubt NASA will allow Artemis to switch from using the Orion capsule to using a modified Dragon capsule for the Artemis missions. Since I know a few people were murmuring about scenarios like that.
Anyway, so with that out of the way:
Given that they will almost certainly be using an Orion capsule for the Artemis missions, if the crewed missions end up actually happening, that is, the latest news looks like massive delays (and/or massive increase in risk to humans aboard if they don't fully fix the issues that have now been revealed).
Lockheed (so, basically ULA, since they are half of ULA or whatever) is a rival company to SpaceX.
Thus, on one hand, SpaceX doesn't exactly want to show them how to drastically improve their products, since it would help them catch up by some non-zero amount, to SpaceX, more so than if they didn't tell them anything or help them at all.
But, on the other hand, SpaceX probably doesn't want Artemis to keep getting delayed, either, and wants the timeline to speed up, not slow down, if possible.
SpaceX clearly knows how to make good capsules (Dragon), and is much better at it at this point than Lockheed is.
If SpaceX wanted to, presumably they could send a few of their top people from the team that made Dragon into what it currently is, over to Lockheed and have them significantly speed the timeline up by showing them what they are screwing up, and how to fix it, and so on. But Lockheed (and ULA by proxy) would glean quite a bit of useful tech directly from SpaceX in this process, and close the (albeit very long) distance between them and SpaceX, at least in regards to reentry capsules anyway, just a bit, which is good for them, and not necessarily great for SpaceX, other than speeding up the Artemis timeline.
Anyway, I'm curious if you think SpaceX is considering doing something like this, right now, in reaction to the new revelations about the Artemis test.
Or, do you think SpaceX has an even more extreme mentality perhaps, i.e. something along the lines of "Artemis is doomed/never gonna even happen, so screw them, let them flail and when it gets canceled in a couple years, we'll swoop in and be ready to come in as the main guys for the new Xartemis mission that gets born from the ashes of that canceled program."
Or neither, like, just figures, "eh, an extra year or two of delays, but we'll just leave it alone and stomach the timeline gut punch for what it is... oh well..."
?
I'm 19 and trying to apply for universities. U of S isn't super picky but most my grades qualify for some other universities...except I was told in high school that I should just take foundations and not pre calc. I was placed in Foundations.
To apply for my top three uni's I need pre-calc and Royal West, where I was advised to go, doesn't have a website anymore or a way to contact them.
Okay to cut a long story short I left school at 15 (15 years ago) following horrific homophobic bullying, no qualifications at all. Became a self employed photographer, did that until the pandemic, that ended that venture. Decided that the photography game wasn't for me anymore. Used savings + parents generosity to get back to education, self studied GCSEs (Only actually sat GCSE English Lang, knew unis need that no matter what you do) and I'm currently doing A Levels (Maths, Further Maths, and Physics) will be sitting exams next summer. Want to study Engineering. Will be applying in January 2025.
Here's my issue, first no reference, academic or otherwise; second, no predicted grades.
Anyone have any ideas? Will this hurt my application?
The federal government is large and vast and there are many openings. When I was coming out of school less than 2 years ago (I went back for a 2nd BS later in life), I was being recruited for jobs that I actually was not qualified for (based on the job announcement), but interesting nonetheless.
Jobs:
Geodetic Surveyor and Maritime Analyst with NGA
Geologist with Army
Logistics Specialist with Army
Contract Specialist with Army
Nuclear Engineer with Navy
Electrical/Computer Engineer with Navy
Financial Analyst with Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
Bank Examiner with OCC
Program Management Analyst with BOEM
How about you?
So, new here. Partly reusing text from a prior post.
Project Link:
https://github.com/cr88192/bgbtech_btsr1arch General name of ISA in question is BJX2. I need to come up with something better, but have seemingly failed to do so as it is notably difficult to come up with names and acronyms that are not already in use by something else...
General name for the OS subproject was "TestKern" partly as it was initially for testing stuff, and as a basic program launcher, not really intended to be a real OS.
FWIW:
I have my own makeshift OS for a custom CPU ISA project of mine (has an emulator, or can run on an FPGA; ISA is a 64-bit 3-wide (V)LIW style ISA; also supports FP-SIMD and similar, mostly limited to running at 50MHz due to FPGA timing constraints). It initially started mostly as a glorified program launcher (had a filesystem driver, basic memory management stuff, and a program loader). Mostly because at the time, porting an existing "real" OS seemed like too much effort.
This was not helped by me using a custom written / non-standard C compiler; but it can now mimic GCC's CLI interface well enough that I had convinced autoconf to use it for a few trivial programs; despite working very differently internally. It doesn't use traditional object files, rather it compiles to a stack-based IR and does all the final code generation during "linking", with the compiler as a single binary that can fake the various 'binutils' commands and similar via symlinks. For things like ASM files, or inline ASM, it will preprocess the ASM code and then pass it through the bytecode IR using string literals.
The C dialect supports normal C programs, but has various custom extensions. Among them, it is capable of also using dynamic types (including lambdas and ex-nihilo objects). Other extensions are mostly for things like bigger integer types and SIMD vectors and similar.
Does not support full C++ though (but, can compile an EC++ like subset...).
My compiler also supports a few of my own languages, one mostly resembling JavaScript or ActionScript, another sort of resembles Java but with semantics more like C#. However, in both cases, they are using explicit manual memory management rather than a garbage collector. All these language (and C) use the same ABI internally, so direct linking is possible.
So, general summary of "OS":
Main filesystem used thus far is FAT32 (with a hack being used to fake symlinks, along similar lines to the mechanism used by Cygwin).
Binary format: Modified PE/COFF. Omits MZ stub, binaries may be compressed using an LZ4 variant, different ".rsrc" section contents, various other minor tweaks. May or may not still be classified as PE/COFF, or "Some COFF variant loosely derived from PE/COFF". Binaries typically have an "EXE" extension (or "DLL" for shared libraries). Note though that standard tools like "objdump" will have no idea what it is looking at here.
Command line mimics a Unix-style shell, but much more limited at present, and the shell has a built-in BASIC interpreter. Had half considered possibly supporting an interpreted JavaScript like language (or, also sort of like ActionScript or Haxe), reasoning that writing shell-scripts in JS is "potentially less horrible" than doing anything non-trivial in Bash notation.
Did start work on a makeshift GUI, but not developed very far as of yet (still needs a widget toolkit and programs that make use of the GUI). Thus far it mostly just creates a terminal window that can be used to launch other programs. For now, this part is using a mix of bitmap and SDF fonts (had written tools to try to autogenerate a full set of SDF fonts from GNU Unifont, but quality of the generated font glyphs from this is a bit hit or miss).
Technically, multiple programs can run at the same time, but with the limitation that it currently uses cooperative multitasking (so one program spinning in an infinite loop can effectively lock up the whole OS). Also the oddity that currently everything runs in a shared global address space (with multiple programs running in a shared address space, with the ABI designed to allow multiple program instances to coexist in a single address space using a mechanism along vaguely similar lines to ELF-FDPIC).
Some parts resemble Unix-family OS's (for example, mostly using POSIX style API's), other parts more resemble Windows (with an API design style partly resembling a hybrid of OpenGL and the Windows API).
Almost could make sense to try to port a Unix-style userland on top of this, but the up-front cost of doing so still seems pretty high. Otherwise, had mostly ported some old games (Doom, Quake, ROTT, Heretic, Hexen, etc). Custom software includes a small Minecraft-like 3D engine, and a video player (AVI, custom codecs) and a few other misc things.
Granted, all this (even getting this far) was a fairly significant amount of time and effort (a good chunk of years...). It is still all pretty crude and limited if compared with a real OS.
Also have a basic OpenGL 1.x implementation (originally written for a software rasterized backend), which is used for a port of GLQuake (and also the Minecraft-like 3D engine). Does omit some rarely used features, and some other parts are incomplete.
Technically, my CPU can also run RISC-V (RV64G), though: * Only the userland ISA (does not include privledged spec) * Can note that RV64G is around 10-20% slower than my own ISA on my CPU core (and for some workloads, like OpenGL software rasterization, drastically slower).
Stripped it down to the frame. Welder. Frame 100%. Changed the color to Metalic Red with a black top. Next, Engine.
This is going to be long. Here we go. I got married in Dec of last year, just a few months ago. I knew my husband about 2 years ago and thanks to God answering my prayers, I was able to reconnect with my beloved and get married 5 months later after losing contact (my fault, I wasn’t ready for a relationship). When we started communicating, he was waiting for his flight to take him to South Korea…( completely fucking stupid). We loved talking and having a great time. He came back for the holidays and we had a small elopement and had some family over. Prior to coming back- prior to being deployed- he was in tech school. He originally had a MOS, (it was changed, I’ll get to that in a bit), that consisted of jumping out of planes. (DearLord) so this is where shit starts to hit the fan. His first jump was, phenomenal right, no issues, beautiful. He was required to jump 2 more times to pass his class. His last TWO jumps right, get this, remember this okay. He jumped the second time and as he lifted his legs out into the open- immediately! The wind blew his head- his SKULL- onto the metal-bodied-frame of that aircraft…TWICE!!!! TWICE YALL. By the lady jump he was barely mentally functioning in the air. He was still in the air guys. By the grace of GOD! He pulled his parachute string in the nick of time and tumbled on the ground with his fairly recent concussion. He passed out at that point. He woke up in a military “hospital” bed.
Now, whoever made it this far down.
Do you have any idea what they “medically” gave him? Guess…
TYLENOL!!! FUCKING TYLENOL!
This guy was slurring words barely making out a sentence. He was barely able to walk. He was not fit to do anything because he wasn’t able to. He was like that for two weeks.
Did you know people…are stupid? Did you figure that out guys?
What do you think the most appropriate approach would be during his condition?
Well my beloved audience.. it was love, that’s what I can say. It was actually caring for the other person.
Put yourself in his shoes. What if he was your dad, you’re boyfriend, you’re brother, cousin, someone extremely significant in your life. A son, a father, a brother. Wouldn’t you want someone to care for them with their upmost skills? Wouldn’t you?
So why the fuck didn’t they do that for him? I’ll tell you why. Because of this world. There is something evil and wicked and morally wrong in this fucked up place. Murder, kidnapping, theft, infidelity, porn addictions, drug addictions, child trafficking, families ruined, fatherless homes, motherless homes. And a lot more!
I am upset. Forgive me. I don’t mean to under appreciate anyone’s time in the service BUT FOR GODS SAKE DO YOUR JOB WITH SOME STEADFAST LOVE!
So, they didn’t give him the care he so desperately needed in his vulnerable position. They gave him an MRI scan that they were very resistant in doing. It took a lot to try and get him that scan for some bizarre reason. And even still when he was able to somewhat talk normally. And good on his feet; after all that, they discharged him and made him work 24 hour guard shifts………..
They only talked about sending him to a rehabilitation facility, because as they were talking they gave him orders to a one year deployment to Korea… on paper. They changed his entire MOS and went to Korea as a MP.
Fast forward 4 months into his deployment. He gets hospitalized for psychological seizures. For those who don’t know what they are essentially they are described as phantom seizures meaning they aren’t real but your body physically mimics the reaction.
The military and the process of getting him hospitalized was another issue. Apparently the base itself didn’t have the medical equipment to treat him so instead they sent him to a Korean non-English speaking hospital. Because they couldn’t understand what was being said, we weren’t able to effectively communicate his history with his initial injury. The military took no accountability. It took a FaceTime call with his mother( God bless her) who is a therapist and a nutritionist and has all kinds of credibility because she took it upon herself to become the most informed person ever and has trust issues with doctors. She realizes that a friend of hers spoke Korean and so the Korean doctors and his mother, who by the way lives in California, and her friend were able to communicate and figure out that he wasn’t FAKING his condition. He didn’t have control of his tics. And they strapped him in all kinds of wires around his head and body and they were able to visually see when he would sizz up in their data. So they concluded he in fact was not faking his condition. The military again had no part during his time at the hospital.
They let him go and when they did he had back to back hospital visits and was in a meeting at one point with a nice military lady who wanted to get him back in the states so they could go get him rehabilitation for his concussion. He was then told that he was no longer allowed to work with weapons or drive a vehicle. But he’s still in Korea as a MP?? Okay.
He came back to the states for a the holiday and of course our wedding. We got married and he was still having his episodes throughout his time here. He finally went back and before he went back, before he came over for the holidays, he was told that since he has medical problems that he would be sent back to the US. So expect to PCS in January or February is what they said. Do you know the date today? Well it’s May.
We got married and we were gonna get a bump in our checks, did that happen? Again…no
Do you guys see my frustration?
We still haven’t had our money corrected and they are telling us it’s gonna be in the next pay day, and the next and the next. Meeting after meet after fucking meeting and wait after wait after fucking wait. Leadership changing every fucking minute, nothing getting done. Wrong paper work being filled out even though someone told you to grab that specific paper and then waiting a month or two for them to tell you it was the wrong one and they should fill out this other one and nobody wants to tell you how to do the paper work as a new military member. And you’re just stuck in this never ending loop of incompetent lazy sons and daughters of God that don’t deserve his grave or love but yet he gives it willingly right guys? Amen.
So where does it end? My husband is completely destroyed and losing hope every single day, he feels like this is never going to end and is just expecting the worst of every possible situation that’s given to him by his leadership.
I’m trying to be positive and optimistic and I try to listen to him but sometimes I get the feeling like he’s complaining right and he keeps saying there is absolutely nothing I can do to help at all and that there is nothing that can be fixed because he’s supposed to wait for his leadership to give him more information and he doesn’t know how to do the paperwork because they told him that he’s already supposed to know and left him with that. So now he’s just stuck and I’m saying, go find someone who’s done it. Ask around. Get a different perspective. Why does he always go straight to give-up mode??? This is useless mode? It’s never going to get fixed mode?
You’re putting all your energy into the things that you can’t control and complain about it but don’t even want to think of the things that you can take charge of like your attitude or finding someone who can help by asking and keep on asking, so persistence. Have persistence, faith, a positive mindset and attitude. There is something that can be fixed. And yet here you are the complete opposite and I want to help, but you tell me it’s impossible! Well then it is helpless and hopeless and useless if you keep thinking that way and then he goes on to say, so it’s my fault, my thinking is wrong. Like NO that’s not what im trying to say and he’s not hearing me.
Obviously you can move this process along fast but any advice if you have would work. What should we be looking out for? Who should we really be talking to? Should he care if he gets smoked by his squad leader if he goes straight to his commander? What should care and not care about? And how can I help ? I’m desperate here. I asked him to send me his pdf paperwork so I can figure some things out for him if I can and he just wouldn’t let me. So idk what to do and how to support him. On top of all this shit, just yesterday during the gun range, he set his bag down where all the bags were and a few hours later and naturally the bags would be picked up by their owner and so my husband’s bag was the only one left at the same spot people had put it before. And his leader goes “whose bag is this?” And now he has to write a 1000 page essay about accountability and until he’s finished with his easy he won’t be getting his bag. Then an hour later or so when he was done at the range, this rank above him goes “where your pen” and so he was essentially being a pain in the ass about a stupid pen and told him the importance of a pen on his person when he told him that his pen was in his bag that his leader took. And still continued to press him about it.
