Karma is a......Mother (3)
Welcome back fellow cowboys! So how does this all connect back to bearding?
"When I was 15 and putting together my first album, [...] I decided to encode the lyrics with hidden messages using capital letters. That's how it started, and my fans and I have since descended into color coding, numerology, word searches, elaborate hints, and Easter eggs."
This is quoted here in 2024 in an article about easter eggs.
Why is it being brought up again?
Taylor has been encoding her lyrics since she was Fifteen. Fearless TV notably had Taylor on the cover wearing the Romeo blouse. This I think is indicating to Gaylors she was always gay and knew it, but she was a child worker in conservative America, and so had to create smoke and mirrors surrounding the muses of her songs.
So how does this tie back to TS12 / Mother? It does via the wonderful Taylor Swift Lyric Finder.
Once I found the opal / mother connection to it, I noticed 9 words that have also been significant.
So I enter into evidence the following words:
  1. Stone
  2. Keys
  3. Smoke
  4. Thief
  5. Thieves
  6. Mother
  7. Baby
  8. Closet
  9. Castle
  10. Home
  11. Opal

Taylor Swift Lyric Links

Stone
18 mentions of “stone” in Taylor’s musical catalogue.
She's been leaving stone crumbs all along....
I think this is hinting that Karma / Mother is going to be a rock album, which fits into Karma lore.
In 2009 she did a BandHero ad with Pete Wentz, Travis Barker, and another pop rock guy, and would have been 20 when it aired, which was easter egged in The Man MV in the newspaper on the subway.
The time doesn’t correlate to albums, but pop-rock, emo, and alt was becoming progressively popular then, and could indicate her curiosity of experimenting with other genres (the irony is painful).
You can watch the video here - it is ironically on a channel called "soydolphin" and if you read this article you would know that Taylor says she doesn't like seaweed and asks for soy paper when she gets sushi.
The account hadn't posted in 10 years until 8 months ago, when it began posting gaming / twitch content again (glitch?) videos.....
All commercials with easter eggs here.
Keys
11 mentions of “keys” - she’s got the keys to her kingdom now with TTPD
https://preview.redd.it/6h2mj6pod41d1.png?width=1376&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f020cc2b4351d2316c6fd13f2701b341c97f9ca
Smoke
19 mentions of “smoke” - I think this is indicative of the age she began contractual bearding
Taylor got a beard (smoke) so she could be high (gay) and still have chocolate (her first 7 albums)
Thief
1 mention of “thief” - Taylor is the OG thief and we are right in the middle of the biggest heist in history
.......Ready for it?
Thieves
3 mentions of “thieves” - I think this indicates how many people contributed to the masters heist & closeting Taylor Swift TM.
Mentioned twice in Midnights, (Spider boy - Scooter, Your Ex-Wife - Karlie. I’ve avoided mentioning muses this whole time, because all the eggs are for the true muse Taylor, however I am going to allow it due to how Taylor described their situation in the Long Pond Studio Sessions, as she described it like going through a divorce and them trying to unalive / take each other out).
It’s mentioned once in Long Live - this song has been cut from Eras TV, and is notably a “song for the fans / swifties”. It’s also a nod to the Speak Now era which is when Taylor first met Scooter, having taken Justin Bieber as her opening act for the 2009-2010 Fearless tour.
I, I, I seeee how this is gonna go
Mother
12 mentions of "mother" - Track 12's are connected to Andrea aka Mama Swift, original Mother
TS12 = Mother
Baby
333 mentions of "baby" - perfect 3's for the perfect number. The ancient Greek philosopher, Pythagoras, postulated that the meaning behind numbers was deeply significant. In their eyes the number 3 was considered as the perfect number, the number of harmony, wisdom and understanding.
Perfection to Swifties is Taylor being a wife and a mother. Perfection to Taylor is finding peace as herself and being understood as her, not Taylor Swift TM.
3x3x3= 27 which is her age when she released reputation.

Closet
6 mentions of “closet” - speaks for itself, coming out was meant to be TS6 so now we’re getting it flipped in TS12
✌️
Castle
11 mentions of “castle” - TTPD / TS11 where she got the keys back
Her castle is made of sand, because none of it was real... Or at least, he wasn't.
Home
157 mentions of "home". 1+5+7 = 13 = Taylor = home. Taylor is home, literally and figuratively.
Her smile is about to turn to a snarl y'all
Opal
1 mention of “opal” - in ivy in evermore. Devastating. Poetic.
This is why she was ignoring evermore. It’s like skipping to the end of the book. It’s why on the album cover, she’s out of the woods in colour.
Our tortured poet has just one more braid to comb out (get it) before we get TS13......
You're my..... Mother
If you've made it this far, well done!
Here is my final connection, and what led me down this complete mother of a hole....
The Tennessean News posting the Eras Tour friendship bracelets
MOTHER is hiding in plain sight
Did you know that you can make friendship bracelets with different braids? She's combing through the lies now, doing so means destroying those friendship bracelets Taylor made with her fans. The fans will be the loss of her life, and they're going to be on their own now in the aftermath. Like the lyrics, these friendship bracelets have been encoded to reveal TS12.

Time for a breather, so we can assess the equation of 'us.'

Important to note that 3/6 is egged here but I believe it is a red herring for Florida!!!! MV.
20/6 has also been flagged as an egg date, and I believe this will be when she releases Mother.
It is 6 weeks after the release of TTPD, connecting to The Black Dog lyrics and continues the parallel performance we have been spectating on tour and in her public life.
Fans will finally know what she has been dying to tell them all along, and why she is pissed.
Speaking of, Gracie Abrams' album releases on Tuesday 21/6.
Act 3 of the Eras tour returns to the US on 14/11 after a hiatus.... She wouldn't possible change the tour again, could she?
That would be insane, right?
I hope you're hungry y'all, cause Mother is gonna be serving and we are gonna be FED!!!!!

Bio from The Festival Voice
Artist Biography by Daniel Karasek
Post Malone, aka Austin Post, is a diamond-certified hitmaker of both rap and mainstream pop. He was raised in Dallas and wanted to join a band as a kid thanks to the video game Guitar Hero. However, he changed his mind and wanted to become an MC after his dad gave him a copy of Terror Squad’s “Lean Back.” Post Malone hung out with the Dallas crew IRAS until he relocated to Los Angeles. He put some braids in his hair and dropped the track “White Iverson” in 2015 which got a million views within a month. He signed with Republic later that year. In 2016, he released his debut album Stoney which featured artists including Justin Bieber, Quavo, and Kehlani. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and would later go multi-platinum. Following this album, Post Malone released two chart-topping singles “Rockstar” with 21 Savage and “Psycho” with Ty Dolla $ign. Combined, these singles went 13-times platinum and became part of his second album Beerbongs & Bentleys which discussed Post Malone’s rise to fame and the trappings that came with it. The album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Before his next album, Post Malone did the pop single “Sunflower” for the Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack which became over 50-times platinum certified worldwide. His next hit “Wow” came later in 2019 helping put Post Malone in the Hot 100’s. The single was part of his third album Hollywood’s Bleeding which featured Da Baby, Future, Halsey, Meek Mill, Lil Baby, SZA, Travis Scott, and even the legendary Ozzy Osbourne. The album topped the Billboard 200 for five non-consecutive weeks. In 2020, Post Malone did a cover of Hootie & the Blowfish’s “Only Wanna Be with You” for the Pokemon 25 album. The next year he released his fourth album Twelve Carat Toothache which featured Doja Cat, the Kid Laroi, Roddy Ricch, the Weeknd, and Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold. 2024.05.12 00:30 ladyutopia7 Theory about why they tryna finish Drake

Theory about why they tryna finish Drake
  1. Niggas tired of him being on top. You not from here, lightskin and feminine (nail polish/hair beads/lip puckers/fruity drinks). Fuckin with Ja, Common, Harden, Serena’s Husband, Drama, Jorja Smith, Baby Keem girl, Future girls and who knows else. (Budden 52:25). Yet they still used him all these years.
  2. Strategy: He wasn’t outrapped, he was outlapped. Soon as he dropped Family Matters with the visuals, you can tell the nigga put a lotta energy and time into that. That’s probably why he was baiting him to drop. Not knowing he’d drop an hour after. Kendrick came with a strategy, foreshadowed by Q telling Cole fall back. “Oh yall taking it this way? I thought we was playin.” Joe speaks on this 1:25:00. It’s recency bias.
Plus, hating on Drake gets rewarded with likes and engagement online. 95% of people are followers and copy what others do so if I see Johnny get 40k likes off “Drake the type of guy” comment, shit lemme get mines too.
“But he’s a pedophile” Each girl did speak out in his defense.
“Drakes silent policy” Most companies have them. Similar to having assets in a holding company or LLC instead of your personal credit or name in case you get sued.
But I really think it’s the Universal Theory: Drake owns a piece of each artist at Universal and Gamma.
Lucien & UMG ties Cuz I’m lil ain’t no way everybody coming at you so hard. Ain’t that much hate for no nigga in the world. This really Thanos. So I’m like damn. What he do to make these niggas so mad? Then it hit me — a broken clock is right twice a day.
In that Justin LaBoy interview where he displayed equestrian levels of meat riding, Ye said Drake has a rich baby daddy named Lucian and UMG". Even in the Like That (Remix) he said again "Where's Lucian? Serve your master, nigga. You caught a little bag for your masters, didn't ya. Lifetime deal, I feel bad for niggas." And he was obviously left off the album and leaked it himself. But he seemed to eager from jump.
Lucian Grainge is the CEO of Universal Music Group (UMG) and the most influential person in the music industry. Some artists in this beef signed to him like Drake (Republic Records), Metro Boomin (Republic Records), The Weeknd (Republic Records), Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Bad Bunny. UMG dropped Kanye in 2021 after his antisemitic remarks.
So what this beef gotta do with Lucian? Might be cause favors Drake. One time, he got asked about Drake's budget and said, "If ever Drake or whenever Drake calls up and says he needs something for his project, I give it to him. He's the greatest." Drake mentioned Lucian and Universal in some songs:
  • "Shit done changed, billionaire talk to me different when they see my paystub from Lucian Grainge" (Having Our Way, Culture 3)
  • Only signin' the gang, we the new Lucian Grainge" (Pussy & Millions, Her Loss)
  • "Who the CEO of Universal? They mistaken. Cause Google sayin' Lucian , but that just doesn't make sense. Who fillin' up the piggy bank? Who bringin' home the bacon?" (Away from Home)
  • “Major distribution, labels call me. Bad Bunny numbers, it's a robbery. Five hundred millions, just for Aubrey" (Major Distribution, Her Loss).
See how that could rub niggas the wrong way? Imagine working a job and your boss says in front of the next staff meeting “He’s my favorite.” Everybody gone hate that nigga and he’s probably gone feel a lil too bigheaded/isolated when dealing with peers. Vice had a luxury hotel manager speak on how they would divide and conquer the cleaning staff by race to better performance. They’d say to the black team “The Mexicans are killing yall today, better catch up!”, saying it was intentional among management to prevent them from banding together. Not only at that hotel but it’s a known strategy in the hotel and other industries. Seem like the same shit, given everyone in this beef are coworkers at Universal.
Now, in late 2021 Drake’s contract was up and that was bad for Universal and the industry. Cuz it’s stick up time.
  • “Drake is about to get the biggest bag in the history of the music business by far,” said Stoute, chief executive of United Masters
  • Russ, who said: “You think that if Drake right now, completely independent … if Drake posts a picture on the ‘Gram of his new album, link in bio — fuck a link in bio, “new album out” — and he was fully independent, Drake will make $10 million a week for fucking 60 weeks.” Added Stoute: “If Drake goes independent, the music business is over.”
  • Says one top music attorney: “Drake has the bargaining power to negotiate a net profit split with the best deal terms and a humongous advance up front.”
The last quote is crucial. Drake and everyone knew it was in the industry’s best interest financially to give him whatever he wants but the thing is — Drake costs a lot. What incentive do you give the biggest artist in an industry where A) labels aren’t really wanted or needed and B) like LeBron, paying what he’s really worth will bankrupt the already downsizing industry? Well, you give him equity. Money on the back end. But from where? Other artists and labels. Keep in mind this was around the time he resigned for the $400m.
  • Under me, I see all the people that claim they over me and above me, I see nobody I'd have to be dead for them to say you took it from me. The 20 percent I own of you that we own is in my tootsie's money." (Champagne Poetry, Certified Lover boy)
  • Please don't google my net worth, the numbers are way off. I mean, if you comparin' it to what I really made off with I'm more like Bernie with all the earings that they came off. Trust me it was nothin' light, holmes **they tried to give me slice of the pie and I took the knife home." (Remorse, Certified Lover Boy)
  • There’s also a bar on the leaked version of Splash Bros that Drake sent the C&D for. “Lucian and me are like Kobe & Shaquille - that’s the reason going independent never had an appeal” (Maybe he sent that cease and desist because he was talking too much and people would catch on. But like the Streisand Effect says, trying to hide something usually makes it bigger).
Larry, Apple & Gamma On Family Feud, Drake raps “somebody get Larry Jackson on the phone, I need some ownership if we pressin go” and Larry was vacationing in the Maldives not doing much career wise and said that was a wake up call and had him asking is there another level to this video game?”
Now, Larry Jackson worked at Apple and was key in signing deals for Apple Music when it launched, mainly Drake and OVO Sound Radio. It was a good deal for both; Drake gave Apple Music exclusives to compete with Jay-Z and friends at Tidal (before they all realized this was dumb af and put their music on every platform) while Apple gave money, visibility and placements. Larry maintained the position at Apple until 2023 when he founded “gamma.” with the previous Interscope (UMG) CFO Ike Youssef.
Yousseff said gamma was an idea from their Interscope days. Larry said he wanted to create something “that will see him acquiring or joining forces with major artists and brands, with endeavors in music, films, merchandise, fashion, web3, and other areas,” Variety reported. But it's not really a label, more like a private equity company who buy shares of artists' publishing. Private equity usually buys companies that are new, or underperforming and find ways to revamp it. It raised a billion dollars with partners like Clive Davis, Apple and majority investor Todd Boehly (remember Todd). Gamma also acquired a distribution platform, Vydia who owns Shade Room, and distribution rights for artists like Usher, Rick Ross. Under gamma is Sexyy Red, 4batz. Which makes sense why he always promoting them. Because why promote Ross and Meek’s album but not Chainz and Wayne’s album?
But the partner Eldridge Industries is the key. Todd Boehly is a very wealthy powerful business owner that has dozens of companies in every sector under his holding company Eldridge Industries. Boehly is the largest investor in gamma followed by A24 and Apple. Eldridge Industries also owns all of the following in music, media, entertainment and sports: eldridge.com/businesses
  • gamma.
  • Billboard/Billboard Music Awards
  • PMC, Billboard’s parent company
  • Rolling Stone
  • Deadline
  • Variety
  • A24
  • SXSW
  • The Shade Room
  • Deadline
  • Daily Hits Double
  • Luminate
  • Dick Clark Productions
  • The Hollywood Reporter
  • VIBE
  • Life is Beautiful
  • Golden Globes
  • Latin Music Awards
  • American Music Awards
  • Streamy Awards
  • ViralNation
  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Chelsea FC
You ever wonder why Drake said fuck the Grammys but still showed up every year to Billboard Music Awards? And how A24 got to executive produce Drake’s Euphoria? Remember when Drake “rented” Dodger stadium? And his love for soccer? LeBron too? Same Chelsea team. And notice Drake start hanging around content creators more the same time Boehly invested in Viral Nation? A social media management and brand partnership company based in Toronto. Now see how that meeting happened to call for a truce and articles claiming Kendrick won that feel a lil premature? Look at the sites.
Now It’s funny how the line “Kendrick just opened his mouth. Somebody hand him a Grammy right now.” is true. 6 BBA, 17 Grammys. Drake? 39 BBA, 5 Grammys. Unlike like the Grammys, where a group of artists, producers, songwriters, and engineers vote, the Billboard Music Awards winners are based on album and digital songs sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring, and social engagement. And they use the same data where Drake’s friend owns a part of. Luminate formerly Nielsen, reports music sales after merging with the Rolling Stone charts, now running how charts and data is counted. If Kendrick can buy bots for engagement in this beef to skew public opinion, who’s to say Drake ain’t been doing for a minute? Reminds me of what Russ said on Schulz’s Flagrant about how streaming farms work. Maybe Kendrick was right too when he said “It ain’t just me I’m what the culture feeling. The fact Drake’s peers ain’t voting for him or coming to his defense right now says something.
Now lines like “If your pub was up for sale, I’d buy the whole thing.” make more sense and Kendrick painting him as Mike and himself as Prince given how Michael Jackson bought half of Sony’s catalogue to spite them (and Eminem’s when he dissed him) versus how Prince hated the labels and was set on owning masters, how Kendrick has pGLang. It’s funny because Sony would end up going against Mike, sabotaging his releases, similar to how fans think Universal’s and streaming services are doing to Drake now. Especially if you’re collecting publishing money in a silent recession that the label and other artists could be using, not so far-fetched to think backdoor meetings start happening. Or when you collect hip-hop memorabilia that belongs in the African-American Smithsonian.
Even down to the servicing and Push Ups being mysteriously taken from streaming. It felt like that Not Like Us was proper and mad quick release. Heard it playing on TNT in the playoffs hours later. Then you get the odd dislike ratio…And videos of actual Kendrick bots on Twitter. Listen to Joe’s takes. (1:39:25)
So with all that, you can see how it’s bigger than Drake and Kendrick. Kendrick represents every artist, executive and person who ever felt slighted by or just tired of Drake’s reign. Drake likely has a quiet deal or a cut of gamma thru his relationship and heavily back by Larry Jackson, Lucien and Todd. Some think this is why Todd made Rolling Stone write Kendrick won. Drake 'middle manned’ relationships between corporations and artists, for execs who ain’t have pull with rappers but now, his peers found out Drake been eating off them and ain’t even tryna share the splits.
If that’s true, I can see how they could want this nigga outta here. The casuals gotta chill though. That dick ridin shit corny. Until any legal shit happens, it’s wraps. People always hated Drake but never had the heart to say it until everyone else did. Thats hoe shit to me.
The beef is great for hip hop. It’s similar to Pac and Big, even down to coasts but moreso Nas and Hov how it’s just rap and ain’t gone spill into the streets. Almost like Mase responding to Cam after he kept poking him in the head. Everyone wants to hear from the quiet nigga whether it’s school, work, whatever. And I’m sure Drake’s house getting messed with is XO’s retaliation work or fans looking for likes. But the more time passes, the more truths gone come out. I’m interested to see what music looks like after this. How stingy Drake get with features, who aligns with who. If he replies or if he goes ghost for a minute. Lord Knows.

2024.05.11 08:42 Trick_Minimum3190 About Her Voice: A conversation on Mariah Carey with author and critic Andrew Chan

About Her Voice: A conversation on Mariah Carey with author and critic Andrew Chan
About Her Voice A conversation on Mariah Carey with author and critic Andrew Chan BY DANIELLE AMIR JACKSON DECEMBER 21, 2023
Photo by Raph_PH via Flickr. Artistic rendering by Oxford American. Courtesy Wikimedia Commons This exclusive feature is an online extension of the OA’s annual music issue. Order the Ballads Issue and companion CD here.
Singing is “the most enigmatic of performing arts,” the author, editor, critic, and self-professed “diva lover” Andrew Chan writes. It’s a simple matter of air and anatomy: breath moves through closed vocal folds which then vibrate and resound throughout the throat, chest, head, or sinuses. But when we listen intently, transcendence is available to us. Raised hairs on the upper arm, a tingle on the back of the neck. The irrepressible urge to tap one’s toes. Transcendence is something we can feel–a physical sensation that unleashes the emotions and connects us to the divine. That’s why a host of spiritual traditions embrace the human voice as a conduit for worship, and in secular music, many of the most popular traditions–r&b and its variants, country, even rap—foreground some sort of vocal virtuosity. A skilled vocalist can “seduce us, haunt us, heal us regardless of the text they’re delivering or even the culture that surrounds them,” Chan writes.
In his first book, published just this past fall, Chan highlights the thirty-plus year career of Mariah Carey, whose five-octave vocal range; agile, multisyllabic melisma; and well-honed aptitude for catchy hooks and witty wordplay turned her into one of the most successful pop singer-songwriters of all time. Carey has earned five Grammys and nineteen number ones on the Billboard pop chart—the highest of any act besides the Beatles, surpassing Elvis. Two of her fifteen full-length albums are certified diamond, with sales of ten million or more in the United States alone. Why Mariah Carey Matters, part of the University of Texas Press’s Music Matters series, is the first book-length critical assessment of the artist’s wide-ranging career.
Chan makes the case that from the beginning, Carey’s vocal dexterity and range set her apart—her mastery at blending piercing whistle tones, fluttery, feminine whispers, muscular belts, and “leathery low” notes, often within the same song. “There’s something irrational, bizarre, and hazardous-sounding about the way Mariah hopscotches over and across vocal registers without warning or transition,” Chan writes. She also blended and mixed styles of singing, infusing both big, sentimental ballads and buoyant, weightless bops alike with gospel fervor; in the ’90s, alongside artists like Mary J. Blige and Jodeci, she contributed to the creation and commercial dominance of “hip-hop soul.” In her house remixes, often painstakingly re-recorded versions of her mainstream pop hits, she frequently scatted and improvised in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan. Equally impressive, and critical in understanding Carey, Chan says, is her “artistry outside the vocal booth.” She wrote or co-wrote all of her most enduring hits, including “Vision of Love,” “We Belong Together,” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” She’s produced herself and other artists, and is one of few women nominated for the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year (Non-Classical). It was an early honor, from 1992, for work on her second LP, Emotions.
Chan is one of my favorite writers and an important voice in contemporary music and film criticism. He’s vivid in his assessment of Carey’s musical gifts. He layers in details of his own upbringing to help us understand why certain songs and singers turned him into a student of the art. I love the way he brings the reader along with him—we’re watching and listening together as Carey delivers her gospel-drenched rendition of “America the Beautiful” on the NBA Finals in 1990, hearing her sing the climactic sea-ahhh as she “evokes rolling vistas and open water.” He acknowledges the blemishes on Carey’s career and the unpredictability of her voice, which he insists is not a recent phenomenon. He situates Carey in refreshing context: with Black singers of the ’80s who influenced her sound, and with other female songwriter-producers like Patrice Rushen, Teena Marie, and Angela Winbush, who don’t often receive credit for their prowess behind the boards.
“So much of the culture and money created during this era is the product of Black female creative energy,” writes Danyel Smith, another of my favorite music writers, in Shine Bright, her sweeping history of Black women in American pop. She’s talking about the middle of the twentieth century, when recordings like the Dixie Cups’ “Chapel of Love” achieved mammoth success that the performers—who came up with the arrangement we all know and love—were not credited for. Carey has received commercial rewards, and, as of late, critical adoration from outlets such as Pitchfork and Rolling Stone.
But Chan suggests we still haven’t absorbed the magnitude of Carey’s genius, that our cultural blinders have hindered our ability to understand the breadth of her labor and mastery. Carey’s upbringing as a biracial daughter of a white mom who raised her largely on her own; her sense of not fully belonging among Black or white people; her insistence on femininity in an industry that privileges masculine presentation when it doles out points for credibility. She used it all in her art—especially in her ballads. Over a long and wide-ranging conversation, Chan and I discussed Carey’s melancholy, artistic lineage, the feeling of singing, r&b, gospel, and transcendence.
Courtesy University of Texas Press Danielle Amir Jackson: Can we start with your background? I know you grew up in some American suburbs and in Malaysia. When did you begin to pay so much attention to Mariah Carey?
Andrew Chan: I moved around quite a bit as a kid. I was born in Minneapolis, in a great music city, but I didn’t live there long. My family moved to Tampa, Florida and then to Malaysia. After moving back to the States, I lived in Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina—the metropolitan New South.
In the nineties.
In the nineties. I moved to Atlanta… I think in ’97. I remember Butterfly had just come out. And I remember Usher was number one on the charts with “You Make Me Wanna…” Living in Atlanta and Charlotte in the nineties, I was one of the few Chinese Americans in school. For much of middle school and early high school, half of my friends were Black. So, there was a lot of exposure to the music that they were listening to. Hip-hop and r&b were becoming mainstream and dominating the charts. Having friends who were Black exposed me to more than just what was crossing over.
I also felt connected emotionally to Malaysian culture. My parents exposed me to some of the great Asian divas of the eighties and nineties. Mandarin and Cantonese pop were important for me until, maybe, first grade. So, I was listening to people like Anita Mui, Priscilla Chan, and Teresa Teng and was completely obsessed with them before I had much knowledge of American pop music. Even then my ear was attuned to how different they sounded. Anita Mui had this beautiful contralto voice. Teresa Teng was more of a mezzo soprano. And they had different vocal approaches. Even if I didn’t have the language to analyze that or express that at that age, I was really drawn to the variety of women’s singing. That fascination carried over to the period when I started becoming obsessed with American pop music and American divas, mainly through Whitney and Mariah. When I heard “I Will Always Love You” and the whole Bodyguard era, I’d never heard something like that before. That drew me to the soul tradition of American singing.
I don’t often hear people discuss Carey in the lineage of great American interpreters of ballads like Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra, and I really appreciate that it’s the note you lead with in your book—which parallels the way that Carey started her career. The OA’s annual music issue is a dive into ballads and the elasticity of the form. What’s special about ballads? Why might an artist like Carey launch her career with ballads?
Even though she became frustrated with Tommy Mottola molding her into an adult contemporary ballad singer, the demo was full of ballads. She co-wrote all those songs. She found different ways of making the ballad fresh and interesting for herself.
The ballad has always meant different things across time. If you were to compare Sinatra, singing an old jazz standard ballad like “Angel Eyes” or “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” what does that have in common with Mariah Carey’s “Can’t Let Go?” They’re slow. They’re about passionate love. This does a couple of things for a singer: It gives you space to really milk every note and moment; the listener is drawn into the space of the ballad and is invited to listen very closely in a way that you just aren’t if you’re competing with an up-tempo beat behind you or if you’re singing fast. The feat is more about rhythm than it is about holding out long notes. The ballad accentuates the tone of the singer’s voice. It creates an intimate connection with the listener. It also puts the singer at risk of being uncool because ballads are kind of forbidden. And that is why we love them. They can be uncool. They almost feel like something that we shouldn’t admit we listen to or respect because they, especially the sad ones allow us to wallow, which we’re not supposed to do if we’re grownups and we want to be serious and mature. We’re not supposed to sink into our feelings of longing and despair. But this is one of the places in our culture where we get access to that intensity of emotion, and the slowness of the music mimics the infatuated person’s inability to let go of love or inability to stop thinking about the beloved.
Mariah is an unabashedly sentimental singer, and that’s why it took so long for her to garner any kind of critical respect. She is in that tradition of musical wallowers. She loves her heartache. She loves to long and pine. She’s a bit of a masochist.
Many interesting people are.
Yeah. Ballads can be transportive to sing. The tempos are slower; you can really get your mouth around the words and feel each one of them. Because the song isn’t whizzing by at a crazy pace, you can build to a satisfying climax. You can go from low to high in this drawn-out, dramatic way. That shows the full capabilities of your voice.
When you say ballads are transportive, are you talking about a transcendent experience? The Holy Ghost?
A little bit. It’s to the point where you’re moving with your own performance, which is why singers sometimes get choked up when they’re singing their ballads, because it is such a vulnerable place to be. In karaoke, which most people don’t take seriously, if I’m singing a particular song and I’m really feeling it, I can get so lost in it.
“She loves her heartache. She loves to long and pine. She’s a bit of a masochist.”
ANDREW CHAN
I like what you said about ballads being almost contraband. I remember when people realized Beyoncé was starting the Renaissance tour with slow songs. It seemed almost like an anachronism.
Yeah, for her big house record. She’s a great ballad girl too. In terms of them being contraband, back in the Maoist era in China, love ballads were banned because they were seen as counterrevolutionary. If you were part of the revolution, you wouldn’t indulge in these individualistic displays of your own personal emotions. I do get into that a little bit in the book where I even had a moment in my teenage years where I was just like, These are pathetic. They’re a distraction from the real business of politics and liberation and revolution, you know?
We include a song by Fannie Lou Hamer on our compilation accompanying the issue. You made me think of Elaine Brown, who was chair of the Black Panther party and recorded songs and some of them are balladlike. They’re propagandist, one-note songs.
There is the political ballad too. I think there’s something about love ballads where it’s like surrendering and succumbing to feelings of longing, loss, yearning, desire. Of course, there’s misogyny involved in that too, because these are “feminized” emotions. Ideas about feminine hysteria are built into this hyperbolic style of singing as well. People forget that Whitney was booed and disrespected for much of her career. It’s funny that she and Mariah had a reappraisal where they’re legends now, but at the beginning of their careers, they were criticized for over-singing and being excessive.
I wonder why people didn’t say that about Luther Vandross. He’s super indulgent.
He’s so indulgent. “A House is Not a Home” or “Superstar”—those songs are seven minutes long or something. He had some pop crossover appeal, but he never hit it as big as Whitney and Mariah. But also, there’s a bit of misogyny in that, the difference between women doing it and men doing it. I mean, Al Green is a show-off. They’re all show-offs.
Let’s talk about the eighties. You say that “Can’t Let Go,” is a revision of “Make It Last Forever” by Keith Sweat and Jacci McGhee and compare Carey’s work as a songwriter-singer-producer to Teena Marie and Angela Winbush. And you go into quite a bit of depth into all her references and homages in Glitter: Indeep, Zapp, Cherrelle. I’m having a moment right now—perhaps I’m where Mariah was back in ’99 and 2000—but I’m so obsessed with the sounds and sights of the Black ’80s. Miki Howard, whom you also mention, has been heavy on my mind, alongside Anita Baker, Patrice Rushen, Regina Belle. In your opinion, what was special about that era in music, particularly in Black pop, and how was it connected to Carey’s debut?
I didn’t come into writing this book as an expert in eighties Black music. That is one of the areas where I felt a bit insecure because I felt I knew sixties and seventies r&b and nineties onward in terms of r&b, but for some reason the eighties were an area that I hadn’t explored sufficiently. I knew the major names and their works, but it is a decade that, when it comes to Black popular music, it’s so defined by one-hit wonders. Aside from the Whitneys and the Michael and Janet Jacksons and Lionel Richies, there weren’t a lot of a long-lasting careers that crossed over to non-Black audiences in a major way. Sometimes, DeBarge would have a pop hit, but for most of their significant catalog, mostly Black listeners were listening. I had to do a lot of catching up to get those sounds into my ears and really hear how they influenced Mariah. I think part of it is because eighties r&b is less canonized than the seventies and nineties. Even the nineties have experienced this resurgence of critical interest, but the eighties are almost like a blip. Part of it is where it came in the history of popular music—after the demise of disco, which really was a shaming of Black music by the white rock establishment. I’m sure it’s more complex than that, but that was certainly a dimension to that whole culture war. In the eighties, you have r&b coming out of the ashes of disco and utilizing the electronic elements that disco had been criticized or seen as superficial for. You get a lot of experimentation like Zapp—so kooky and goofy. The use of the talk box to manipulate vocals. You get club music, like Cherrelle, a sort of post-disco dance music, people having a lot of fun. Just like really deep grooves that went on for like six minutes. Gap Band, all that kind of stuff.
There’s the kind of fun side of eighties r&b, but then on the other side you have this luxuriousness, the plush textures of Quiet Storm, which began in the seventies, but really came into its own commercially in the eighties with people like Luther, Anita Baker—who sort of took the slow-roasted, slow-jam, boudoir sound of Isaac Hayes and Al Green and Smokey Robinson—and pushed it to a whole new level. Even when they were singing at the tops of their lungs, it was still smooth.
I hesitate to just generalize all eighties r&b, but I see those as the two parallel tracks. I think they both deeply informed Mariah’s aesthetic. I think Aretha is a huge influence on pretty much all r&b women singers. I think Mariah would cite her as the ultimate female influence, but I think when it comes to sonics, the luxuriousness, the Quiet Storm sound is so evident in songs like “Underneath the Stars” and “Fourth of July.” Those are what you would think of as Quiet-Storm Mariah, but you [also] hear it in the stuff that’s more hip-hop like “The Roof.” The way she’s stacking her vocals, the way she’s creating texture with her voice. It’s very Luther. The way she is manipulating her voice, the way she’s showing it off but not for its own sake, but to create an environment that you sort of wrap yourself in. When I think of Luther showcases like “Superstar” or “Forever, for Always, for Love,” it’s very much like some kind of texture that you can wrap yourself.
This is quite different from the approach of the belters of the sixties and seventies, like Aretha or even Gladys or Chaka, powerful singers who really prioritized the belt. Mariah is a phenomenal belter—one of the greatest. Where she really distinguishes herself from other divas of her time is the subtler parts of her voice. I think a lot of that is influenced by Quiet Storm. When it comes to the zanier side of eighties r&b, you hear it in her sense of humor, her effervescence, especially as she became more of a jokester lyrically in her later years. You can sort of hear the lyrical experimentation and the kind of devil-may-care attitude of eighties Black music.
One of my favorite live performances of Carey’s is where she sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “If Only You Knew,” her Patti Labelle homage. I love that era in her voice where there is that level of rasp.
That performance—it’s very eighties Patti. “If Only You Knew” is so eighties. I think Mariah’s samples, too, are so interesting and root her in the time of her youth. She’s such a radio-head, the way she talks about listening to the radio in her memoir and her devotion to soaking up all those sounds. That was before streaming, where you really had to be glued to the radio. I don’t know if she had MTV back in the day, but the radio was the thing. And she wasn’t just listening to r&b. She was listening to Pat Benatar. The range of her musical references is so fascinating.
I’d love to discuss Carey’s gospel moments. You spend a great deal of time on her rendition of Dottie Peoples’ “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child” and note that while Carey didn’t grow up in the Black church, she joined one as an adult. What’s Mariah’s connection to the gospel of the ’90s? I’m thinking of artists like BeBe and CeCe Winans or Commissioned?
I love gospel music, but I would never claim to know it. I love gospel music because that’s where r&b comes from. R&b is my portal into gospel music. It remains the source of so much great singing, even today. Le’Andria Johnson is one of my favorite singers alive. In terms of Mariah and gospel, I think it is so interesting to me that she didn’t grow up in a Black church and yet was so committed to singing in a gospel style, even from the beginning. There may not be songs that feel explicitly gospel on the debut album, but you do have moments. “There’s Got to Be a Way” has a gospel choir that feels kind of in the style of BeBe and CeCe Winans. That pop, commercial gospel that was happening in the late eighties and nineties—the kind of gospel that you would hear in Sister Act 2. Then she employs background singers like Kelly Price and Melonie Daniels—virtuosos of that sound.
In the book, you note that Kelly Price had been trained by Mattie Moss Clark.
Yes, I found that in a video of Kelly Price. She talked about doing some kind of workshop with Mattie Moss Clark when she was younger. [Carey’s] commitment to surrounding herself with not just skilled r&b background vocalists, who could do a commercial sound, but vocalists like Kelly Price and Melonie Daniels, who could bring a church sound, specifically a COGIC sound to her music is completely fascinating to me. The Clark Sisters were playing on r&b radio back in the seventies. Gospel had been having these kinds of crossover moments, but Mariah’s knowledge of the music surpasses just knowing “Oh, Happy Day” or “You Brought the Sunshine.” She was listening to Vanessa Bell Armstrong. From the very first album in interviews, she is citing Vanessa Bell Armstrong and the Clark Sisters as influences.
I have to think that in her teens, she had been exposed to gospel music. I’m fascinated that she came to the music and absorbed its influence without having a longstanding background in the Black church. I bring this up, not so much as a point about appropriation, but more as another example of Mariah being someone obsessed with records and listening to music and soaking up any influence she could find, whether it was Journey—when she covers “Open Arms”—or gospel or hip-hop or what have you.
To go back to gospel and “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child,” she has moments where she wears her gospel influence on her sleeve even before that. “Anytime You Need a Friend” was one of the most significant gospel moments; she’s singing with a choir behind her and doing a lot of riffing and running and belting in the way of the great COGIC singers. “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child” is significant because it sounds live. I read somewhere that it was recorded live in a church. The vamp is unlike anything that had come in her discography before. It is a gesture toward a kind of gospel authenticity. It’s no longer just gospel-pop. It’s going there and trying to recreate the spirit and the atmosphere and the feeling of a live gospel setting.
I’m interested in her study of gospel as an example of her being a constant and abiding student of different forms of Black music. I love her later gospel songs like “Fly like a Bird,” “I Wish You Well,” and “Heavenly” where she combines a James Cleveland song with a Mary Mary song. There is a song called “I Understand” that’s one of those multi-megastar performances. There’s Rance Allen, Kim Burrell, and Mariah does just whistle at the very end.
Do you think Mariah is fundamentally an r&b artist?
We first have to acknowledge that genres are constructs. These terms have historical origins that are usually rooted in marketing and promotion. Most people track [r&b] to the 1940s. It replaced race music as the designation or the category for whatever African Americans listened to that was popular music. It’s a shifting signifier. The idea that there is a commonality between the music of Ray Charles and Lavern Baker and Fats Domino and Mariah and SZA—all these artists sound so different. I think there is something a little bit unhelpful about these genre markers.
That being said, constructs take on their own reality for people who engage with them. For Mariah, and her listeners who gravitate to the r&b side of her catalog, r&b represents something. It’s as different as the music has become over the decades. There are still certain stylistic and sonic continuities. It’s very improvisational. There is melisma, runs. In classical music, you perform it as its notated. Melisma defies notation. You can sing so many notes so fast that you can’t really even transcribe it. It’s rooted in gospel. It’s rooted in a certain passion for delivery, a centrality of the voice and individual expression. An idea about struggle and transcendence, because it’s rooted in the Black experience and an acknowledgement that life is sometimes totally unbearable, and music is a vehicle to help you get over, to get through. People who gravitate to r&b are connecting with that.
Of course, not every r&b song is about that. But even in a slow jam, you can hear that whining, that struggle, that tension. You hear all these elements in Mariah’s discography. For her, r&b became, at a certain point in her life, a way of expressing her Black identity, which had been dismissed or misrepresented or misunderstood. She was constantly asked about her race in interviews, constantly having to remind people of what she had said from the very beginning, that her father was Black and Venezuelan, and her mother was Irish American. Embracing r&b as her heritage was an important part of her owning her identity as a Black woman. R&b is so interesting as a cultural and political marker, because now we’re in an age where white artists like Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake, or whoever, say that they’re r&b. I’m less interested in saying, “This person’s not r&b; this person is,” and more interested in what is it that makes people so desperate to align themselves with this genre. I think it’s the historical lineage—the gravity of the heritage. It’s the connection to the idea of soul, which is a spiritual idea.
I’m not sure if any artist can be definitively anything when it comes to genre. But I think certainly Mariah perceives herself as an r&b artist and has conducted her artistic life in a way that shows that she’s committed to a certain ideal of what r&b is—passionate, soulful singing; a connection to music as a form of spirituality.
“Even in a slow jam, you can hear that whining, that struggle, that tension.”
ANDREW CHAN
You have this part of the book where you’re talking about her covers of power rock anthems. You don’t say that she’s reappropriating, but you say she’s showing how permeable rock and r&b boundaries are. They have a shared origin, and they come together in her choices of what to cover and what to sing and how to sing them and her arrangements.
For sure. If you think about Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” that she covers, that’s an instance of a white band bringing gospel influence into a rock song. These boundaries are always permeable. Rock at one point was called r&b when it was sung by Black artists. What she demonstrates with her music is the variety within r&b and that the music is not a monolith. She’s giving you quiet storm. She’s giving you girl-group songs. She’s giving you New Jack Swing. She’s giving you hip-hop soul. She’s giving you power ballads. She’s giving you deep soul, in the tradition of Aretha with “Mine Again.” She is committed to a vision of herself as an r&b artist, but for her it is many things.
All the things you were saying about the struggle and resilience r&b signifies—I think that’s also reflective of the queerness that many sense in a lot of Mariah’s songs.
Absolutely. One song I want to write about is “Ain’t No Way.” Carolyn Franklin wrote that. I don’t know if we know definitively if she was queer, but I think all the history kind of shows that she was. There’s definitely a [queer] reading of that song. You have Luther as a queer artist and Sylvester, so many of the pioneers of the r&b. Little Richard. It makes sense because gospel was pioneered by queer people. Otherness and survival, the longing for transcendence is something so baked into the music. That’s certainly what I was responding to as a young closeted gay child, who’s experiencing racial otherness in the American South as well. Obviously, my experience is very different from Mariah’s, but I think there’s a longing to transcend the arbitrariness of what oppresses us through sound.
And she does transcend and break through.
She achieves it. What is beautiful about a Mariah Carey ballad is that she takes you into the depths of despair, sorrow, but through the sheer beauty and power and mastery of her voice, she is carrying us over. No matter how sorrowful or despairing it gets—and some of them really are quite dark and fatalistic—there’s something about the voice. The voice can be the vehicle that carries you over.

Hailey Bieber Numerology Reading

Before becoming the wife of Justin Bieber, she went by the name of Hailey Rhode Baldwin. Firstly, her first name being her main name and being Hailey, let's see what that usually indicates on a general level.
Being someone who holds the first name, Hailey means that you appear either quiet, mature, or shy amongst others. You likely have an impression that can strike others as strong, serious, mean, or relaxed, depending on other factors. The name Hailey holds no double numbers, so it is a good balance of energies, but there are still general lessons people with the name Hailey has. This name holds the energy of 8,1,9,3,5,and 7. The numbers we don't see is 2,4 and 6. This could be why people with the name Hailey may not seem easily approachable by many people, but certain people may be drawn to this energy and won't notice anything off balance. Hailey names give people naturally embedded strength and some form of power, even if it is subtle. They may not always have a simple love life because with 2, 4, and 6 missing, these women/females can struggle sometimes with commitment or close intimacy and could have been too independent or avoidant at one point when someone was trying to love them. The name Hailey makes someone complex because on one hand, they a serious regarding their disposition(8) because they want to appear structured and well received by the public (1) or it makes them feel good to be well put together. They are naturally independent which could sometimes come off as distant(9), but they just want to explore and learn continuously(3). These are not initially people who place importance of romance.
Even if she is into relationships, she would likely not trust easily because of her name ending with the energy of 7 from Y which equals 25 before it is reduced to seven. Now as we look into her being Hailey Rhode Baldwin, this give her a lot of 5 energy. She has a few repeating numbers in her full name which are 8 twice which is good because she isn't overbearing, bossy, or mean, but she has tenacity and ambition most likely. Her capability of dedicating herself could be very strong. She can be obsessive, but it won't be too intense with the 2 8's balancing each other out. In other cases, this could cause her to overthink sometimes or have trust issues.
1 twice as well which emphasizes her not being a bratty type of woman because 1 and 8 can give someone a mean complex if there is enough of it. 1 is about being bold and taking the initiative.
9 three times in Hailey Rhode Baldwin's name which gives her emphasized 9 energy which is about power, authority, popularity, maturity, and travel. One thing she will likely always make time for is travel and learning. Could be into cultural knowledge as well.

Being HAILEY RHODE BALDWIN gives her the Destiny #4, soul urge #9, and Personality #4
Destiny #4 is the same as Halle Bailey. Destiny 4 people are private, especially about things they value and things they see as important and dear to them. It's serious. These types of people are naturally capable of withstanding or handling responsibility. They are evolving into mastering a life that is in order. Don't force these types of people out of their shell if they are not ready. Once these Destiny 4 types feel safe around you, their personality expands and show clearer.
As a soul urge 9, Hailey Bieber is a natural at quick learning and experience. She may be someone who could see something once and would know the ins and outs after that first time learning or practicing. 9 is mastery and wisdom.
As a personality #4, this makes Hailey a cautious person. She will not do or say anything if she isn't feeling comfortable to do so. She takes calculated steps and won't do anything she considers risky or stupid. She has to warm up to environments before she allows herself to be part of the festivities. Likely not too big on parties as an importance.
April and May of 2024 were very romantic times for Hailey Bieber which makes sense that she is now pregnant with Justin Bieber's baby.

Drake's lyrics ain't adding up, thoughts?
Lyrics from the songs ''Jaded'' and ''Nice for What'' which funnily enough are both on the same album ''Scorpion'''. This man really had a phase were he was going to the studio to record lyrics about young girls.
You should look into the history of Drake strangely close with girls under 18. Not just Millie Bobbie Brown, who this dumbass mentioned in his ''diss'' causing more heat, but also a picture which Kylie Jenner posted in 2013 (Kylie was 16 at the time) where Drake was holding his arms around her and kissing her, him being a fan of a high-school basketball team, Drake talking to a 14 year old Hailey Bieber and going on date with her when she turned 18 and many more examples. This shit ain't a coincidence and everybody within the industry must have known this, as they did with Nickelodeon, Disney and all other industries.
It also wouldn't make sense to me if Kendrick made such strong accusations without any proof or knowledge about this. Like Kendrick said he has been in the industry for 12 years and some things he has seen really made him question people's integrity. There is a reason why Kendrick doesn't like Drake, this ain't about numbers.

Karma is Real: The Origins of Karma, the Lost Album
This post is the first in a series of collabrative posts that are co-authored by the subreddit in order to collect Gaylor history and lore. This series/collection will focus on specific topics that have very little written down on them and/or what is written is so scattered that it takes a queer village to coalesce it. The first post in this series will focus on Karma, the caged album. At this point, Karma feels like folklore to new gaylors and the lore is so deep that it's nearly impossible to explain it to people who haven't watched most of it live in one go...this is an attempt to do it in one go.
In this post, I use the term "Gaylor" to refer to people who believe Taylor is queer. "Swiftie" is for everyone else who is a Taylor fan. I do not like to be called a Swiftie, because I associate Swifties with homophobia and doxxing at this point. Swifties have their own theory of Karma, minus the gay. Karma is not a theory that exists only within the Gaylor sphere, but we will not be discussing the other version...just imagine this one, stripped of all queerness.
This post will likely not read like an article or like a traditional masterpost - the information is loosely categorized by time. If there is something you'd like to add, please tag me in the comments in order to have it added. This is still - and always will be - a collaborative post. As such, it will always be a work in progress. When adding something, it would really help me if you could provide HD screenshots and video links and/or specific times within the video.
I have edited every contribution for flow, grammar, and cohesiveness. Each individual contributor is noted before each paragraph they contributed.

Origins

What is Karma?
Karma is an album Taylor did following 1989. We are uncertain if it was written, written + recorded, or some combination therein. Karma was shelved by her studio and management because it was too gay and they didn’t want her to come out of the closet. So effectively it is locked away. Karma being locked away is represented as Taylor wearing orange and being locked away in a the gold cage in the Look What You Made Do video -- karma is caged, locked away in lowercase.
It is debated if Karma is the first or second time Taylor wanted to come out, with the first time being post-Fearless. Narratively, coming out would have made sense to do so following 1989.

Karma represented in interviews, photoshoots, music videos

u/courtingdisaster: During Vogue’s 73 Questions with Taylor Swift, she smirks as she says, "karma is real." The interview was published on YouTube on 19 April 2016 and at 8:38 she says “Karma is real”.
I am including the short clip and the 2 questions before it, because in retrospect Slut! was clearly being referenced here.

long edit

Bleachella

u/asapphicyearning: Taylor was releasing an album every two years under Big Machine when she first started - she went through five albums before that changed after 1989 when she didn't release an album in 2016 as was expected. In 2016, Taylor bleached her hair blonde for the cover of the May 2016 Vogue issue and showed it off at her first ever appearance at Coachella. As she was known for changing her look with every album, her new hair made us think we would be getting an album that in 2016.
Bleachella was a look that went nowhere, unlike all of Taylor's other aesthetic changes. She cut and bleached her hair, wore silver, leather, black lipstick, and had an overall rocker vibe. We were all expecting a rock album next, but nothing ever came from it... Reputation's aesthetic is not Bleachella's aesthetic, so that doesn't align. As will be discussed next, KimYe drama began in 2016, which may have affected Karma's release.
Bleachella

Scooter + Kanye + Kim’s Role in Karma & Reputation

le sigh. no one helped me with this vital piece. I will write this part another time. This post was wildly long to compose and I am not a person who takes days to write things. If I can't knock it out within 2 hours, I just don't do it until it's to the point that it explodes from me in that time frame.

Karma in reputation and later albums

reputation
The first signs of a "lost album" came from the Look What You Made Me Do music video.
https://preview.redd.it/mhccdydhjiyc1.jpg?width=963&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e4c2b3d0c6dcc7441bb12dd7ea12609a96babaf
u/necessary-rabbit-340 and u/criscrospv: In So It Goes... she sings, “gold cage hostage to my feelings” and then wears an orange jumpsuit while trapped in a gold cage in the LWYMMD video.
The gold cage is a metaphor for the closet and for being a caged bird. We can see this in Taylor's work and in Harry Styles' work - they are caged in their golden closets. Also worth noting the 3 dots in an ellipsis.
u/asapphicyearning: Then we have her singing, "the world moves on, another day another drama. But not for me, not for me - all I think about is karma" while inside the vault. This is particularly interesting to look back on after the release of Karma the song because of the lyric, "karma is a cat" and all the people inside the vault are wearing cat masks. Right after that she gets on a motorcycle while wearing leather - some have wondered if this is referencing "dykes on bikes" and is suggesting that the album was caged for being "too gay".
u/hereslookinatyoukld: While still in the vault, in her cat mask, Taylor burns a lot of money, which has interesting implications if we see the money as representing her fame/career, which she (or her management/label) believe Karma will destroy. This ties into the burning of the Lover House (another representation of her career) and the "fire" ReputationTV vault tracks.
u/hereslookingatyoukld: The entire vault concept is tied to this moment in the music video and is a setup for Karma as the ReputationTV vault tracks. Kitty vigilante Taylor is literally standing inside a vault. The entire concept of the vault tracks is setting up the idea of left behind songs in the minds of her fans. Yes, it's brilliant marketing, but she could have added "bonus" tracks and received a similar effect.
Kitty Vigilante Taylor burning money
u/asapphicyearning: Later in the video we see Taylor sawing off the wing of a black plane. It's not easy to see, but "TS6" is written on the tail of the plane. Taylor later spray paints "reputation" on the side in pink -- Karma clowns believe this symbolizes the "grounding" of the Karma album and changing the plan to reputation instead.
It's also important to note that we recognize all of these Taylors from each era, but she specifically chose to include the orange Taylor that we believe represents Karma, locked away in her gold cage in lower case, shelved and unknown.
https://preview.redd.it/m99orproniyc1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17346dcdf29ca32eb7d26be1ea29906a8ed4239b
Lover
u/asapphicyearning: After the LWYMMD video, the next real clue comes from The Man music video. At 00:00:50 we see a wall with the names of several of Taylor's albums spray painted on it. Seen twice is 1989, once in black and once in white. Karma is also on the wall, once in black and once in orange. Gaylors and Swifties have theorized that the wall might have been some kind of clock or map to the albums and re-records, but no one is sure what the code is at this point.
the man wall
u/Kit10phish: In the Lover House there is an orange room that is all upside down and they're playing games. In the YNTCD video there is the random girl in orange on a stationary bike - going nowhere - and oranges. There are also oranges in her yard. There was something related to oranges at the Reputation stop in AZ with pics of Taylor and then Joe by the same saguaro cactus.
u/liminaldyke: This is deep (and potentially meaningless) og Kaylor lore, but there used to be a Kaylor whose public socials were all under TheOrangeGirl. Her icon was a screenshot of the stationary bike girl and Karlie('s team) publicly interacted with her frequently.
Midnights
In Midnights, on the remix of Karma, Ice Spice sings, "Karma is a fire in your house / And she 'boutta pop up unannounced." This has led to the belief that Karma will come out unannounced or unexpectedly... There will be no explanation, the will just be Karma.
u/koturneto: When Taylor announced the song Karma during MMWM, she giggles and ducks.
Karma truthers were gobsmacked and reinvigorated. She knew what she was doing here!
MMWM Karma Reveal
u/themamsler24: Antoni Porowski (Queer Eye) responded to the Karma Midnights Mayhem announcement on his story with something like, "that giggle". He seems to friends with Taylor, so he seemed in on the Karma theory in some way.
thanks u/courtingdisaster
The Tortured Poets Department
This line from TTPD hints to me that Karma will either emerge as the vault tracks for ReputationTV or that Karma herself is an album that is locked away in a vault, because she was shelved — “I keep these longings locked in lowercase inside a vault”.

Numerology, Countdowns, Cats, Duplicity, and Orange

This portion of the post was entirely provided by u/Thornelake and edited by me. It's analysing Karma within Taylor's IG account.
Numerology and countdowns
11 is a Karmic number in numerology. It's also a master number (mastermind) along with 22 and 33. Taylor tends to post Karma easter eggs on dates that include 11, add up to 11, or have some connection to 11. Sometimes, they'll reference 6 (Karma was TS6) and sometimes they'll reference 12 (Karma could be TS12, with TS13 being the coming out album). There's also a pattern of 3, 2, 1 countdown references (counting down to the end of exile, counting down to TS13/meeting the real Taylor).
Cats/Duplicity
Taylor's references to and easter eggs regarding Karma typically include cat references (Karma is a cat) and/or doubles, whether it be two emojis, duplicates within the photo, or captions that include the number 2.
Karma is Orange
Obviously, Karma's color is orange.
On 4/26/19 -- Lesbian Visibility day and the 116th day of the year - 11 is Karmic, and 6 is the caged TS6 Karma album -- Taylor posted this video holding Benjamin. She's also wearing a cat shirt (with two cats) with two orange hearts, as well as an orange light leak/overlay and orangey lipstick instead of her signature red. While it may be a reach, the caption could be a nod to time travel? TS6/Karma is traveling in time from its originally intended birthdate/release date...
https://preview.redd.it/sydnxnh29iyc1.jpg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=585d36e29c96ce6fa868f172f711e98e83cbe8cf
On 6/13/19 (June 13th is the 164th day of the year and 1+6+4=11), Taylor posted this photo of an orange fence from the YNTCD set with the caption, "there were five posts in the fence." This is in response to fans trying to decode the meaning of the 5 holes in the fence in a photo she had posted while transitioning/teasing Lover era - there was no easter egg in the holes and it is now a huge and beloved clown fail moment in the entire fandom. Technically, there are 6 posts in the photo (TS6=Karma). We see you, lying Tay.
https://preview.redd.it/nidau2ia9iyc1.jpg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b24ae7e7190f4762d80349907e9182dfe9fdad5
Side note but serious stretch: Since Lover predates covid and Taylor couldn't possibly have planned to write folkmore during lockdown, it is possible this was a countdown post to Karma. 5 fence posts = 5" more albums until I come out." Lover is her 7th album, and she teased Midnights during Lover Era via the sparkling midnights blue on the man wall, so we know it was already in the works. Without covid, Midnights would have been TS8, TTPD would have potentially been TS9 and/or TS10, making Karma TS11, and her coming out album TS12 (meet me at midnight?).
On 8/11/19 (11 date), Taylor posted this photo with USA soccer player Alex Morgan with the caption "the thirteens really jumped out." Alex's jersey number is 13, so with Taylor they're double 13s (11, 33 master numbers), and of course Alex is wearing Karma orange. It's notable how similar Taylor's outfit is to Chad's in the Antihero music video.
https://preview.redd.it/0r1z0z32aiyc1.jpg?width=216&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17c35621654ef59a2cc7f0d5206b59a64469e5fa
On 9/16/22 (Lots of double 16s here – 9+1+6 = 16, Sept 16th is the 259th day of the year and 2+5+9 = 16, plus 22 master number), Taylor posted the infamous Niceboy Ed making of Midnights video. There's a clip of her in a very TTPD white night gown (plus gray headboard), under an orange blanket with her cat. This was a clever way to incorporate all 3 of the countdown albums.
https://preview.redd.it/itknhfx6aiyc1.jpg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2aa5e06ee83641c8f17ea23e0a8a40ee8168a351
On 10/21/22 (21-10 = 11, 21 reversed is 12, there are three 2s and two 1s in this date which could be a nod to the 3, 2, 1 countdown), Taylor posted her thank you for the Midnights release. This photo of her holding up two thumbs (which can be seen as an 11) with an orange cake (odd colour to celebrate Midnights with, given it's a blue album). In the caption, she notes that this is the first album she and Jack have done with, "just the two of us as collaborators."
https://preview.redd.it/hbvn9lqjaiyc1.jpg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec7e2f6a9bce7dba80144c4fb41475628ca934ff
On 10/29/21 (2+9 = 11, 1+2+9 = 12/Karma TS12, 21 backwards is 12), Taylor posted a video while wearing an orange hoodie for National Cat Day. She's singling out one finger (Karma 1 on the countdown) and she giggles (like she giggled during the Karma track name reveal during Midnights Mayhem) as she looks up and to the the right. If she's a clock, she's looking toward the number 1 on a clock face.

On 5/26/19 (May 26th is the 146th day of the year, 1+4+6 = 11), Taylor posted this photo from Paris with the caption "au revoir" and two orange hearts. She's also wearing orange (black and white flowers – TTPD reference?) and there are two photos in the post (two Taylors). It's also worth noting that Taylor premiered the music video for Karma on May 26th, 2023 at Eras tour. It was also the 26th eras show on the 26th - another double.

On 10/23/23 (double 23s, 1+2+3 = 6, 1+2+3+2+3 = 11), Taylor posted this photo celebrating cruel summer going to number one and there is a great deal to unpack within the photo. Taylor is holding up 1 finger and standing under an orange amp, which could mean on the 3, 2, 1 countdown, Karma is 1. There's a Midnights blue amp in the center. Jack is standing under the black amp (TTPD?) holding up two hands (TTPD is number 2 on the 3, 2, 1 countdown and two hands could have also been an egg that TTPD was a double album). Also, 9 of Jack's fingers are visible, and added to Taylor's one finger equals 10 – a potential nod to Midnights being TS10.

On 10/4/18 (10-4 = 6), Taylor posted this orangey lightleak photo with a caption singling out the last 2 US Rep shows. There is an orange wall and an orange couch behind her.
https://preview.redd.it/4e6n3k8obiyc1.jpg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20c2965401f9d7ea46b02c0bddc829a773a0d49e
On 11/10/22 (11 Karmic number and 22 master number), Taylor posted this photo for the Anti-hero acoustic version release. Note the two orange lamps/sconces on the wall.
https://preview.redd.it/89bjanywbiyc1.jpg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa45b6f346745da2ef51536dfe9348e58d68acfb

Karma: The Origins of a Movement

There is a belief among a few of us that Karma was the start of a movement within the industry, led by Taylor and some others in her inner circle. This was the first or second time she was closeted against her will when she wanted to come out, so she decided to do something about it. Some believe the end result of this movement, beyond an exposure within the industry of various abuses and abusers, will be a new record label.
u/taytopancakes reminds us that there was a theory when we first heard the song Karma that Taylor was hinting at some of the people involved in the silent movement. It was speculated that there may be a new record label named "Karma" and that the chorus of Karma was hinting at who has been pre-signed - Ariana (god), Bieber (boyfriend), etc.

Eras Tour

https://preview.redd.it/6nntzzvuhnyc1.jpg?width=207&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55557a203dd40319e50b2a87d1077824df79196b
u/hereslookinatyoukld: At the Eras Tour, at the beginning of LWYMMD, the version of Taylor in a cat mask from the vault in the LWYMMD music video appears alone on the screen in a glass closet for a significant amount of time. This is the same Taylor who sang, "all I think about is Karma." Time stamp is 1:06:16 in the Eras Tour film.
u/moonstruckmedusa: The Eras Tour ends with the song Karma and an orange door.
u/dopedupvinyl + u/fokelore: During the surprise song set, Taylor wears a yellow dress over her orange 1989 outfit. This fits with two pieces of gaylor lore: 1.) yellow is queer coding for closeting and the closet, and 2.) that Karma comes after 1989.

Karma Doesn't Exist

There is a common refrain among Gaylors + Swifties that, "Karma doesn't exist and it was released as reputation, shut up about it." How long is this post now? We clearly didn't listen.
u/zxbln: A few tracks on reputation were supposed to be released on Karma/Whatever Title. So It Goes and Dress were written and produced in 2015 or prior. Ready For It, IDSB, LWYMMD and some more in 2016 or afterwards. With that evidence, it is safe to assume that the OG Karma is not there anymore, as parts of it have already been released. However, there are definitely more tracks that were scrapped.

2024.05.02 13:05 honeysyed1 4 Years of Struggle to $8k in One Hour

Dude, I know.
I was STOKED.
Adrenaline out of my eyes, basically.
My gf was rolling at all the noises I was making.
It was weeks of planning and months of work.
Maybe even years of stress.
Brace yourself this is gonna be a LONG one.
But it will have all of the major things I did.
And I'm not shitting you, if I can do it, literally ANYONE can.
just depends on how bad you want it.
And if you scoff at anything here, then it probably means you're not ready.
FYI BTW, I have been attempting to launch and relaunch online communities with almost no success for almost 4 years.
It's embarrassing how many platforms I've tried, how many offers I've had, and how many times I invited EVERYONE i knew to join...
Only to find that something was missing and moving it all and restarting.
Again. and again.
Tribe, Circle, Kartra, Mighty, and a few others.
It sucked.
But with a lot of hard work and a little luck, I guess I'm becoming a 4-year, overnight success.
Like an iceberg.
Skool just has something the others don't.

Anyways, as promised, heres how i made 8k in one friggin hour.

I will break my approach into two categories:
Thats pretty important, cuz you will need to find a balance of both to win.
Strategies without action make you a daydreamer, and actions with out a strategy makes you- maybe manic, i dunno.
Its not good is my point.

STRATEGY: BIDE YOUR TIME (Goose strategy)

Its easy to spend time getting validation and 2nd opinions, but very quickly it can turn into you breaking your focus, (we'll talk more about focus later).
It is much more challenging to sit in the dark, doing your thing, trusting that you will just figure it out.
I turned off my social medias and broke away from my friends for almost 6 months straight.
I focused on getting starting my community, getting my offer, then my copy, then talking to potential clients to learn more, then started selling, then finished my community.
So my recommendation is to build quietly and then explode.
Lastly, you will usually see people in competitions racing EXTRA HARD to get extra points at near the end of the competition.
Nothing wrong with that.
But there is something to be said giving it ALL from the beginning.
You're not competing with the leaderboard, thats just the CTA.
You're competing with every version of you that didn’t try as hard as you did.

STRATEGY: 2. MY OFFER (stolen from Ted Carr)

If you are not a celebrity, your offer has to be amazing.
You have an extra step.
If you are a celebrity you better make sure your funnels are FREAKING SOLID meaning you will have to offer mask.
All of us want to teach how to have freedom and more fun and balance in life but NO ONE buys that.
They buy:
So you gotta "offer mask" Write that down, its important.
You sell what they want, give them what they need.
You SELL them how to become fit, but you GIVE them good habits for balancing their emotions.
If you speak the language of your client's mind, you can change their heart.
And if you're a celebrity, you just have to make sure your funnel system fucking rocks, for the most part.

ACTION 3. FOUNDING MEMBERS (stolen from Jade Jemma )

Make your founding members friends and family.
Go. To. TOWN.
I reached out to EVERYONE with an online business of some kind.
Or even CONSIDERING starting a business.
Or people that tried fail and were jaded and threw plates at me.
Everyone, from my dad to old tinder matches.
It was LIKE CHEWING GLASS.
But I did it.
"Are you doing something online?" Cuz I have an offer you CAN'T refuse.
I have two hacks for you:
And side note DON'T take things personally.
Earn the losses until you've run out of losses.
If you can believe it I had more preorders but less than half have yet to take action on our verbal agreement.
That's just how it works, just keep going.

ACTION 4. BETA MEMBERS (Goose Strategy)

A beta member is a client that you give your service to for free or cheap so you can learn the process of onboarding and fulfilling your commitments, while they give you feedback.
Mutually beneficial.
After you have gotten your founding members, try this for beta clients that I stumbled upon by complete accident:
If you can join an existing Skool Mastermind communities (ESPECIALLY if it's paid) just befriend all of the other people also investing into themselves like you are.
Almost all of my first beta clients were friends from these masterminds that could benefit from what i did, and were happy to tell me how i could improve.
I offered to them my software for free (until they start making money) and teach them how to build it all themselves.
And in exchange they would tell me how we could improve my everything.
Business is 20% what it is and 80% how you sell it. (I made this up but you get the idea)

ACTION 5. TEAMWORK DREAMWORK (Stolen from Sam Ovens)

It's no secret that Skool exploded recently because he teamed up with Alex.
We would be STUPID not to learn from that.
When you start off, you usually have to do all the work yourself, unless you hire services like mine, AND/OR you can inspire or find someone that believes in the vision you believe in.
This can also help when you've reached your existing goal and are ready to scale (like w Skool) You want to find someone that compliments your strengths ultimately creating something that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Just so happens that years ago Sorelle Amore introduce me to my now best friend Jeffrey Buoncristiano, (call him buon-buon tho, he likes that).
He's a bearded YT celeb dude that has done branding & efficiency work for years with EVERYONE from taylor swift and bieber to google and HBO. (Not luck, I PUT myself in the place to meet these people years ago)
What YOU want is a party in the front, and a smooth system in the back.
So pick which one you are, and then find your compliment, and do it.
Without buon I wouldn't have been able to accomplish all i did without going crazy.
And i sure as HELL was not going to be able to finish understanding backend funnel scaling systems by myself.
I thrive in a place where i interact with people.
Be efficient.
Be like Sam & Alex, Goose & Buon, Phineas and Ferb.

STRATEGY 6. CAPTIVATE THE WORLD (@me)

I will repeat it again.
Give them an offer they can't refuse.
Again and again.
Also give them an outfit they can't ignore...
Business usually kinda sucks.
Its boring and stressful a lot of the time and very easy to have your more authentic self slowly evaporate in a sea of "saving face", "looking the part", and "acting professional".
Ya know, that shit.
But it does NOT have to be like that.
Really.
There IS ALWAYS a way to make your service slightly more fun without sacrificing ANYTHING.
If you can STAND OUT & BE DIFFERENT, it is the secret sauce to adding that cherry on top to what you do.
You don't have to do it yourself of course, but you should have someone on your team capable of this.
Most of my personal clients and friends for as long as i can really, have come because i'm colourful, and stayed because i'm weird (stubbornly myself).
Do that, but for your business.
Imagine something you NEED to do, and you know you will deal with unpleasant or inauthentic people.
Now imagine someone or a system making that experience slightly more fun.
Guess which one most usually people choose.
If you're wearing all black when i see you on the street, I have nothing to compliment.
Our conversation never happened.
Use these two things I made as examples:
  1. Our website: https://captivate.ninja
  2. And our current VSL.
You want you business to be the dude that came to the party and you didn't even talk to, but you definitely noticed, and maybe even came up conversation later.

ACTION 7. SOCIAL MEDIA SHITSHOW (Stolen from Tristram Samoa , Hamza Ahmed , Alex Hormozi Gary Vee, Max Perzon)

I have a hate/hate relationship with social media.
Admittedly i need to do these more, but you don't need to know crap about it.
Just do there 2 things and trust in the force- it'll work.
Post, Comment, DM, Strategy
$1.80 Strategy

STRATEGY 8. STEAL, IMPROVE, THANK (Me and everyone that ever made anything great)

First, Steal.
Today after this post I will also Post in Every. Single. Community. that gave me something.
About the people that gave me something.
It can definitely be hard to do sometimes but it will naturally bring more growth to everyone in the process.
so i encourage you to do it as well.
Learn, accomplish, thank.
In skool terms you will likely get practical benefits as well, like hitting the leaderboards and getting more eyeballs.
And the person you were grateful towards can get a testimonial, flattering content, and, most importantly, a warm fuzzy feeling.
I will finish off this post with an invitation and thanking Andrew Kirby.
Captain Kirb. Kirbs. The Kirbinator.
oh, The Kirbinator! i really like that one. (Someone want to help me make that catch on?)
I am very grateful Sam chose you to be the guy.
The stuff you post encouraging all of our growth is very thoughtfully considered and i am constantly (quietly) consuming.
Im certain that aggregating this stuff takes a long time and its more fucking inspiring than you realize.
Thanks man.

2024.04.25 00:13 geemav Why did Justin Bieber, despite being as popular, never achieve the numerical success that Taylor Swift is seeing?

Fame and popularity are difficult metrics to actually quantify, but anyone that remembers 2010-2013 will remember that the Justin Bieber fanaticism was absolutely rabid. You could not escape him. Not on traditional media, radio airwaves, tv, social media, in person conversations you name it. He was massive, the hysteria he had was (I believe) truly the closest we've seen to MJ since him. Also I'd argue he was a bit more inescapable than T Swift just because of all the outlets and ecosystems we have access to nowadays.
That being said, Taylor Swift is a monster at numbers in a way that Bieber never was; from album sales, touring numbers, movie sales, even net worth. It's insane!!! Why didn't Bieber's fame translate this way?

2024.04.23 22:07 HeyitsDaizy Reverse-listening thread: "TTPD is about the music industry" edition

I am having a slow day at work so I am going to listen to the album in reverse and notate my thoughts in this post as I do. I'm listening to this album with the idea that it's about the music industry.
This feels like a song about a celebrity that went through a lot of trial and heartbreak throughout the music industry and had a rough life. It feels like they're retired and reflecting on their long life and thinking about how it's happening to other, younger musicians now. "the story isn't mine anymore". another funny/interesting line is "she rolled her eyes and said, "you're a professional" <-- I am taking this as a clue. "in the age of him she wished she was thirty.... afterwards she only ate kids cereal and couldn't sleep unless it was in her mother's bed" - this feels like a line about behaviors someone takes on after they've survived childhood trauma.
"she thought about how he said since she was so wise beyond her years that everything had been above board - she wasn't sure" - this feels like a line about being groomed. "you're so mature for your age" type of vibe.
This feels like a song about being a child star, being totally naive and innocent. Being sold promises of fame and twinkly lights but not knowing about the dark horrors that await you. "but now we'll curtail your curiosity in sweetness" (we're not going to tell you the truth about what you're getting into, just smile and nod along, you're going to be famous, kid!)
I think this song is about seeing the first cracks in the illusion of the industry. The age of the subject is still young, but we've left childhood behind. "he was a cad, wanted her bad, just like any good trophy hunter" - another predatory/grooming implication? Or maybe it's about a talent scout/executive who wants his prized star to make money for him. "that's when she sees the littlest leaks down in the floorboards and she knows that she must bolt" - the cracks in the fairytale are starting to emerge and the subject is thinking about jumping ship.
I think this is about a friend or peer in the industry that committed suicide. I know that's dark, but I just can't get that feeling out of my mind. "forgive me peter, my lost fearless leader, in closets like cedar, preserved from when we were just kids - is it something i did?" when our friends kill themselves we always blame ourself. "forgive me. is it something i did? is it my fault?" 'in closets like cedar, preserved...' it's not a closet, y'all i think it's a CASKET. "i thought it was just goodbye for now" - 'i didn't think this would be the last time i ever saw you.' "you said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me, promises never to keep" - as kids, they promised to stay in touch and look out for each other. But he can't keep this promise anymore because he's dead. "lost to the 'lost boys' chapter of your life" - this is a peter pan reference, a story about a boy who never grows up. in this case the subject can't grow up because he's dead.
Other people have remarked that this sounds like it could be Kesha's story or about someone who tried to warn about the dangers of the music industry and was crucified/exiled for it and i think that interpretation is great. In greek mythology, cassandra was someone who had the power of prophecy but was cursed to never be believed because she rejected the god apollo. Which is so poignant for the idea of a victim who is telling the truth and predicting his evil deeds but no one believes them. This one feels so straightforward that I don't have much to add.
Well, now that we've established that the previous track is referencing Cassandra the prophet and could be an implication about victims exposing their abusers in the industry, this track takes a very interesting turn. I think this is about bargaining / not wanting what you've discovered about the industry to be true / wishing you could change things. I think it's also about regretting the decision to pursue this life of fame. Wanting to walk away. "please change the prophecy, i don't want money" "a greater woman wouldn't beg" - please let me out of this contract, I don't want to do this anymore. If the previous track could be about Kesha, I think this one is too. I think they are tied together. Cassandra and her prophecies. "and i look unstable, gathered with a coven 'round a sorceress' table" one of the biggest tactics abusers use is to discredit their victims by painting them as 'unstable' 'crazy' etc.
"northbound i got carried away, as you boarded your train south" - the subject of this song is parting from someone, they're going their seperate ways, or maybe this is someone who got out of the industry. "i'm afflicted by the not knowing" "i'm addicted to the 'if only'" 'what would have happened if i stayed? would i have made it, been a star?' in the entertainment industry, if you're not in, you're out. this entire song is positioning the subject as an outsider, maybe someone longing or wistfully regretting their decision to part ways with fame, thinking about what it would be like to try again. "i look in people's windows like i'm some deranged weirdo" it's an exclusive club, and once you're out, security isn't letting you through the gate.
I think this track is straight up about critics/the media/tabloids. I don't think it's about any single person at ALL. let's go through some lyrics- "there's a bronze, spray tanned statue of you" - it's an award, a trophy. "and then she wrote headlines in the local paper laughing at each baby step i'd take" - literally, the media. writing headlines and making fun of an artist's progress or attempts at creativity. "i pushed each boulder up the hill, your words were rinigng in my head" - what haunts us? how many youtubers have you known that have fallen victim to endlessly reading hate comments about themselves and then spiraled? celebrities do it too. critics' words are ringing in her head. "i wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool, i built a legacy that you can't undo" - she wrote a lot of songs that the grammy's and music critics felt were a flop, but still she has built her legacy. "but when i count the scars there's a moment of truth, there wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you" - it's a double edged sword. without press, without media, there isn't promotion. without promotion there isn't fans and a 'legacy that can't be undone.'
I think this is about the rich inner life of someone who didn't get a chance in the industry but is incredibly talented and creative. I think this one is actually completely straightforward. This is literally our poet inside the body of a finance guy. Someone who hates their office job or corporate life but is trapped there because "this place made me feel worthless" the industry rejected them or their audition didn't make the cut, maybe they didn't have the looks or the "it" factor. this is the life of an office worker who longs to break free of their awful day job and explore their creative pursuits but they can only explore their creativity in their mind.
Okay, this song is layered y'all. This song is seriously the most sarcastic and funny song to me on the album, I think. I think this song is about being in a close working relationship/or being at some sort of event with someone that you absolutely HATE! (think Taylor rolling her eyes at Justin Bieber at the VMAs LOL) But you have to get along with them through gritted teeth for the sake of 'professionalism'. On first glance the song sounds like a silly little love song, but I think it's much darker and the song is DRIPPING with resentment. Lyrics: "I want to find you in a crowd just to hide from you." Just the title alone 'so high school'. I'm sure being at an award show with famous people who are trapped in a state of arrested development probably DOES feel so 'high school'! "and in the blink of a crinklin' eye" (this is a photo flash from a camera) "i'm sinkin', our fingers entertwined, cheeks pink in the twinkling lights, tell me 'bout the first time you saw me" i think this is a little red carpet interview moment where you have to play pretend with someone you despise because all lights and cameras are on you. "your friends are around so be quiet, i'm trying to stifle my sighs" they're sighs of disappointment. you're in a room full of this person's friends so you have to keep your mouth shut about them. "are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me? I'm betting on all THREE! get my car door, isn't that sweet? (sarcasm)" "it's true, swear, SCOUT'S HONOR" she's LYING! her fingers are behind her back lying like a kid. "I feel like laughin in the middle of practice" (i think this is vocal practice, maybe practicing for a performance with multiple people for a special event or something.) "do that impression you did of your dad again, i'm hearing voices like a madman" she is hating being around this person so much she feels like she's going crazy.
This one is also pretty easy to figure out - it's about tabloids and gossip. I don't think I need to even go into detail much - we've all been there right? We have something tragic happen to us and a vulture of energy vampires descends upon us acting like they're so concerned and sad for you, but they just want to know your business so they can go tell it to other people because it's juicy. The empathetic hunger descends.
I'm having a hard time figuring this one out, but I think one interpretation could be about disassociation. This idea came to me when I was looking up the word 'hologram' and a synonym for it is 'reflection'. So take the line, "your reflection stumbled into my apartment" - the narrator is watching themselves in a sort of out-of-body way, having a schism due to addiction or trauma, and one person in this song could be like your 'inner child' that you 'deserted'.
This is about having skeletons in your closet and being cancelled, but also being cancelled is meaningless and doesn't effect you that much. "Wise men once said wild winds are death to the candle" when you're at the top and successful, if you get too 'wild', your candle (light, success) will be blown out. "a rose by any other name is a scandal" Rose McGowan championed the #MeToo movement. "cautions issued, he stood shooting the messengers" this guy is trying to silence his victims. "cross your thoughtless heart, only liquor anoints you, she's the albatross, she is here to destroy you" - this guy prays and appears to be a christian, but he's just an alcoholic rapist scumbug. and one of his victims, his albatross is ready to talk. Verse 2 is from a different perspective. it's from the POV of the perpetrator. "one bad seed kills the garden" one bad encounter, choose the wrong victim, and your empire of grooming and abuse could crumble. "one less temptress, one less dagger to sharpen" - one victim is dead, which is one less knife i have to sharpen to threaten them with to keep them silent and in line. "locked me up in towers but i'd visit in your dreams, they tried to warn you about me" - the perpetrator did jail time, but they gave their victim PTSD and they haunt them from behind bars. "and when that sky rains fire on you and you're persona non grata, i'll tell you how i've been there too and that none of it matters." - the perpetrator is saying that when all hell is breaking loose and you're 'enemy number one', it doesn't matter. you'll survive it. cancellation isn't real.
I think this is about negotiating a contract or a business deal, or about trying to win back a collaboratobusiness partnership that you may need. "did your research, you knew the price going in" - you know how expensive i am, literally. "whether i'm gonna be your wife or gonna smash up your bike, i haven't decided yet but i'm gonna get you back" - all business relationships are good until they're not, and they rarely end amicably. "push the reset button we're becoming something new, say you got somebody i'll say i got someone too" - we're renegotiating the terms of our contract and neither one of us want to reveal our hand so we'll both bluff and say we already have someone.
I am not really sure about this one either, I think one possible interpretation is that this is about your label ditching you for a younger, newer, shinier product. "she's too young to know this song". If we are listening to the album in reverse order like this, given my interpretation of the next song I think this makes a lot of sense.
The newer, shinier toy has arrived. This is about the cycle. Clara Bow, Stevie Nicks and Taylor Swift are not meant to be references to anyone. They're just examples - a talent scout approaches a precocious young girl and starts telling her she looks like a glamorous star, like 'taylor swift'. And she wants to be famous sooo badly! So the cycle is about to repeat, we're getting another young girl for the industry to chew up and spit out and our old narrator was discarded.
If we're listening in reverse order, the previous song 'Clara Bow' touches on the idea of cycles repeating through generations or through 'lifetimes'. The Alchemy opens with "This happens once every few lifetimes... " Our new 'big star' is making it and is outshining and out performing all their peers. "Call the amateurs and cut them from the team". "I'm the one to beat." "Where's the trophy? He just comes running over to me" our young star is winning awards.
Welp, now our heroinE has been betrayed by the business. All the shiny promises she was made were fake and the cracks are revealed. "you hung me on your wall, stabbed me with your push pins" - office supplies, this is a board executive office/meeting. "in public showed me off, then sank in stoned oblivion. once your queen had come you treat her like an also-ran" once she made it big and proved her success, she was treated like a used up, washed up nobody.
Nothing like being forced to work through a mental breakdown! This is giving Katy Perry dancing and singing on stage right after Russell Brand divorced her over text. This song is upbeat, but I don't think it's meant to be "look how good I am!" I think it's meant to be... "this is inhumane, I'm having a mental breakdown and I can't do this."
Our record label from 'smallest man' has come crawling back and wants to sign her again after ditching her. they made a bunch of false promises and dazzled her with impressionist paintings of heaven... but they were fakes. Being promised the world and then having the rug pulled out from under you is very hard and jarring, and the fall is a long way down.
I think this is a track about being naive and thinking that you can CHANGE the industry alone, but getting in over your head and realizing that you as an individual can't make a difference or a change because this whole thing is bigger than you thought.
The subject of this song has been through the ringer at this point. Far from the winning streak a few songs ago, her teeth have been pulled out by this life, by the industry, and they've become bitter, cruel and vindictive from all of the trauma and abuse they've suffered as a child star. But they want to bite back. They're warning. "You should be afraid of me, i'm not going to take this lying down."
Even though the subject of this song knows that fame is bad for them... they're fantasizing about being famous again and about stepping back into the limelight. They feel guilty for having these thoughts because fame wasn't good for them in the past, but they can't help having that desire.
I think this is another track about industry sleazes who have skeletons in their closet, similar to the albatross. This is about someone who has like a bunch of victims. "at least the dolls are beautiful" - the victims are beautiful.
Our perpetrator is out of jail! And he's running straight back to his young starlet (victim.)
Another young aspiring talent has fallen victim to brainwashing and grooming and wants to be a star. Her parents and lots of other people are very hesitant to let her pursue this career path but she thinks she knows better than all of them, and knows this is what's right for her.
I think this is about a celebrity voluntarily choosing to leave fame behind because they are tired of being exploited for tragedy porn.
I think this is another track from the point of view of someone who was chewed up and spit out by the industry. The industry beamed her up in a cloud of sparkling dust, did experiments on them. But even though they treated her terribly, she wants the life and career and can't let it go!
I feel like this track is about being overworked to the point of being broken because you're the record label's favorite. You're making the most money, you're their favorite, and they're wringing you dry (breaking) you!
I think some of our 'tortured poets' have come together and are working on something now. They're using a typewriter, "are you gonna screw this up with me?" "this ain't the chelsea hotel, we're two idiots". the chelsea hotel was a hotel that had many iconic groundbreaking artists stay there. They're working on something but it's on the 'down low', it's secretive and they don't want to screw it up.
This is the letter to the industry/the big machine. "I love you, it's ruining my life" - I love fame, but it's killing me. "I touched you for only a fortnight" - I touched success, happiness, the peak, but only for a moment. "Move to Florida, buy the car you want, but it won't start up 'til i touch you" - The tortured poets want to speak up and make a change and 'send the criminals to Florida' so to speak, but the 'car' taking the 'criminals' to Florida won't start up until they 'touch' them (aka - speak up.)
I think Taylor is building to a huge novel or documentary revealing the horrors and truths of the industry. The music industry has never had a #MeToo and things have not changed. I think maybe she's leaving clues indicating that she wants to break this cycle somehow or try to make a difference because she's witnessing the cycle of fame continue to chew up and spit out young girls and boys.

2024.04.22 18:39 Humble-Grand9988 Theory: What did Drake do to make these ni**as so mad?

Theory: What did Drake do to make these ni**as so mad?
I tried to understand why these rappers are so mad at Drake, and I think it has to do with his close relationship with Lucian Grainge and UMG. In the latest interview, YE says this when asked about Drake: "Drake has a rich baby daddy named Lucian and UMG". Furthermore, in the 'Like That Remix' he says: "Where's Lucian? Serve your master, ni**a. You caught a little bag for your masters, didn't ya. Lifetime deal, I feel bad for ni**as." implying that Lucian is Drake's master and that Drake is making money for him.
To start, let's understand who Lucian Grainge is. Lucian Grainge is the CEO of UMG (Universal Music Group), and he is considered to be the most powrful person in the music industry (Source: https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/no-1-lucian-grainge-power-100-6874748/ ). Some of the artists signed to UMG are: Drake ( Republic Records), Metro Boomin (Republic Records), The Weeknd (Republic Records), Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny). They also had Kanye, but their relationship ended in 2021 after his antisemitic statements.

Lucian Grainge with The Weeknd

Here with Metro Boomin

Here with Kanye
But what is Lucian Grainge's role in this beef? The reason could be his relationship with Drake. One time, he said this when asked about Drake's budget: " If ever Drake or whenever Drake calls up and says he needs something for his project, I give it to him. He's the greatest" (source: https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/239609-umg-ceo-lucian-grainge-jokes-that-drakes-budget-is-unlimited-news ). Also, Drake mentioned Lucian and Universal in some songs:
- "Shit done changed, billionaire talk to me different when they see my paystub from Lucian Grainge" (Having Our Way, Culture 3)
- " Only signin' the gang, we the new Lucian Grainge" (Pussy & Millions, Her Loss)
- " Who the CEO of Universal? They mistaken. Cause Google sayin' Lucian , but that just doesn't make sense. Who fillin' up the piggy bank? Who bringin' home the bacon?" (For all the dogs, Away from home)
- "Major distribution, labels call me. Bad Bunny numbers, it's a robbery. Five hundred millions, just for Aubrey" (Major Distribution, Her Loss). Drake mentions his deal with UMG (source: https://variety.com/2022/music/news/drake-deal-amount-universal-umg-publishing-catalog-million-1234943306/. )
I believe that Drake, thanks to his relationship with Lucian Grainge and the money given to him, has managed to own the stocks of different record labels like TDE, gamma (a new label founded by Apple executive Larry Jackson that has Usher, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, French Montana and Sexy Redd under contract) as speculated by Joe Budden in his podcast (source: https://www.xxlmag.com/joe-budden-drake-co-owns-gamma/ ), and maybe some subsidiary labels that are under UMG. This is just a theory but there are some lines in some of Drake's songs that hint that he gets money from other artists' publishings.
- "Under me, I see all the people that claim they over me and above me, I see nobody I'd have to be dead for them to say you took it from me. The 20 percent I own of you that we own is in my tootsie's money." (Champagne Poetry, Certified Lover boy)
- Please don't google my net worth, the numbers are way off. I mean, if you comparin' it to what I really made off with I'm more like Bernie with all the earings that they came off. Trust me it was nothin' light, holmes they tried to give me slice of the pie and I took the knife home." (Remorse, Certified Lover Boy)
If my theory is right, I understand why many artists are mad at him and see him as the man to take down. Imagine being an artist and know that one of your biggest competitors receives money from your publishings LOL. However, I think thet main man behind everything is Lucian Grainge, who probably uses Drake as a puppet to control and own different other artists. Which explaines the line from Ye "You caught a little bag for your masters didn't ya". As an exchange Drake receives unlimited budget to do whatever he wants.
I don't know if my theory is true, but I think there is more than just competition or women behind the reasons for this hip hop civil war. I think that eventually we will get to know more about it.
Let me know in the comments what you think about this!

2024.04.21 15:32 TwelveGaugeSage Some thoughts on the Guardians BABIPs.

Slow day at work for me, so I decided to do a little autistic look at the BABIPs.
Most of them are where you would expect looking at their current other numbers. Herrin, Sandlin, Gaddis, and McKenzie all have low BABIPs, even considering the stellar defense behind them. That makes sense for how well they pitched except for McKenzie, in which case it is pretty concerning. 5 ERA and 1.61 WHIP with a .204 BABIP....yikes.
Beede, Carrasco, and Barlow all have BABIPs that would indicate they are right around where we would expect them to be. Smith, Bibee, and Clase are all in the "a little bit unlucky so far category" which bodes well considering how well they have pitched so far. The gut punch is Bieber who threw up awesome numbers despite a really unlucky .417 BABIP in his two games.
On offense, as we would expect, Kwan, Fry, and Arias all have high BABIPs. Sadly, they will almost certainly cool off. Florial, Gimenez, Laureano, and J. Naylor are all around average BABIP, indicating what we see is what we get. Amazing for Josh, good for Gimenez, not so good for Florial, and awful for Laureano. I suspect Laureano might be the first roster casualty to bring someone up. B. Naylor, Ramirez, Rocchio, and Freeman have been a bit on the unlucky side, which bodes well for all of them. Brennan and Hedges have been on the pretty unlucky end with BABIPs of .214 and .188 respectively. Brennan will come to life and Hedges will get up to the low .200s. So remember that when you give those two shit on here, haha.

Taking a glance at AAA, Parsons, Burns, and Gose all look pretty solid when you factor in BABIP. I would expect Rodriguez, Lavastida, and Straw(oof) to regress. Manzardo and Cedrola right around average luck. Tena, Schneemann, Brito, and Noel are on the "Pretty unlucky so far" list. Schneemann seems to be having a good season despite a bit of bad luck so far. Manzardo and Schneemann should be high on the list to bring up next, to nobody's surprise.
Yordys Valdes has a BABIP of .611 in Akron. I hope they are preparing him for the come down, haha. Those kinds of numbers will mess with your head for sure.

2024.04.21 05:35 ReggaetonPartyMane1 Best Selling Reggaeton and Spanish Rap Singles of all-time Part 1

Using the metrics outlined by the RIAA, the numbers for some singles are staggering when it comes to worldwide figures. According to the RIAA, 1 sale for a single is equivalent to 150 streams. The IFPI is supposed to be the only official body to certify singles on a worldwide level, but they only use stream equivalents that figure in overall sales. These numbers are official given the metrics, but there is no recording association that certifies them on such a level for worldwide figures. The RIAA only counts domestic sales and the IFPI goes by stream equivalents. In this list we have converted the overall streams, digital sales (Itunes, Amazon mp3 etc…), and physical sales into an estimate. These estimates will be fairly accurate given the data readily available. Also if you are wondering how we calculate the album figures, just realize that 1500 streams equal one album sale.
Urbano singles that have sold over 100,000,000 units equivalent worldwide
None
Urbano singles that have sold over 90,000,000 units equivalent worldwide

Tickets update and forecasts for selected German games (Apr 19, 2024)
New: I`ve added colours in the forecast cells. Green means that the number has increased compared to last update. Orange: Number has decreased. No colour = Stable or new number.

Sea Devils: No much change here for the Hamburg home games in Bremen and Hannover. I`m getting slightly concerned about Bremen because the curve flattens now significantly. So I reduced my forecast number from 18 to 17k for the moment.
https://preview.redd.it/3klge7lmghvc1.jpg?width=568&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=656cd7dbc878cc7712a242d586efaa75688b4369

The sales rates have been very stable for each of these three highlight games. Still the PreZero Arena seems to attract a lot more people than Bieberer Berg... (but we have to keep in mind that Galaxy could sell a lot more standing room tickets than I would expect. As you all know I can not log them)
https://preview.redd.it/b0pu1eibbhvc1.jpg?width=575&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d863c7b31e65cb291f9e201de086f606786ecb07

Rhein Fire: No unexpected change here.
Edit: The German newspaper "Rheinische Post" (partner of Rhein Fire) mentioned my last update from this subreddit when they published an article about the early progress in Rhein Fire sales and a very likely new sales record for the new season:
https://rp-online.de/sport/football/rhein-fire/ticketverkaeufe-laufen-gut-rhein-fire-auf-dem-weg-zu-neuem-zuschauerrekord_aid-110419847

To be honest: I don`t know what happened at [RF@CC](mailto:RF@CC). My log today has shown fewer sales than last week. Two possible reasons: They opened a new sector (I haven`t spoted one) or they changed seats to available that have been marked as occupied before, for example contingents that haven`t been fully used. If anyone has a hint let me know. Third reason would be that I made a mistake when collecting the data (will check that next time).
Cologne has also announced 7,5k sold tickets this week. This also doesn`t really match with my logged actuals. Could be that they gave tickets to people behind the field goals. But it doesn`t look like it so I think this was just a number for public relation reasons and my number is the correct one.
Notable: There is a signifcant increase in the sales for the other three Aachen games. Again hard to say what`s the reason for it. Could be advertising. That is why I have increased my forecasts for the third and fourth game in Aachen.
I will post my next update again in about two weeks. Afterwards I maybe switch to weekly because then we should finally see more and more steep curves. And I know everybody here loves steep curves ;)
