2024.05.19 02:23 Inner-District2423 Controlled tests comparing community recommend armor and weapons

TLDR; I conducted a lot of tests based on community feedback after my first batch of test results (and recommendations) were perceived as controversial. I ran additional simulations and used chi square analysis to see if any equipment stood out.
Introduction
Assertions about the best equipment in Kenshi are innumerable, but few of them are driven by data. A previous post based on repeated combat simulations and statistical analysis indicated that the Polearm outperformed other community favorites, sometimes by a remarkable margin.
Additionally, the recommendation to use crab armor was challenged and members pointed that other armor types not included in that round of tests would do better.

These points were explored in additional testing. Also considered was how squads that were partially composed of crossbows and melee troops performed against pure melee squads.
Materials and Methods
The Forgotten Construction Set (FCS) is the defacto modding tool for Kenshi. Two squads were created and made to compete against each other many times to see if they differed in any significant way. Squads competed until all the members of one squad were knocked out, at which point the winner and loser were recorded. Fischer's Exact Test was then used to see if the results were significant.
Squads
Squads were composed entirely of Greenlander humans (except when explicitly testing other races). The rational for this was Greenlanders have no combat buffs or debuffs and that this would avoid potentially problematic discrepancies in stats that could be attributed to either a defect in FCS or stats so high that they would be utterly impractical to attain.
The stats of each member of the squad were identical in all simulations, with tests being done on squads all at either level 100 or level 50 depending on the test.
When robotic limbs were being considered all members had masterwork KLR arms and legs.
One squad was created as a starter squad which placed all members directly under the players control. The other squad was created in a modded town on the unamed island named "Chi Town", which was composed of a single building. In each new game, the squad in Chi Town would spawn in its building and begin patrolling the area.
Chi Town was set as a hostile faction to the player controlled squad. On a new game the player controlled squad would spawn in Chi Town adjacent to the hostile squad. Despite having hostile faction relations, Chi Town never initiated combat against the player controlled squad, allowing the player squad to have its members positioned in a variety of ways to ensure an even match up. Combat was then initiated by the player after setup.
Squad Size
To avoid a known problem with the AI in which knocked out members would revive mid combat and begin patrolling the town rather than continue fighting, the squad size was limited to 5 on each side for melee tests.
A squad size of 10 was used for each size when crossbows were being tested.
Initiating Combat
Squads were either loaded by a new game or quick load. After this members of the player controlled squad were positioned in such a way that when combat was initiated all opposing squad members would participate in combat at about the same time.
During combat soldiers were knocked unconscious, but frequently regained consciousness mid combat and rejoined the fight. Combat continued until all members of one squad were knocked unconscious.
When testing indoor combat the members of the opposing squad were spawned in a stationhouse. The player controlled squad then entered the building and initiated combat. If at any time battle caused a member to navigate outside the building the test was discarded and a new iteration conducted.
When testing combined arms a purely melee group was compared against a squad with both crossbows and melee members. The purely melee squad was positioned at maximum distance before initiating attack. This enabled the opposing crossbows to fire off multiple volleys in an attempt to give them maximum utility.
Each squad had 10 members. In the case of the combined arms group 5 had melee weapons and 5 had crossbows.
The crossbows used in the experiments were the Eagle's Cross and Junkbow. The rational for this is that the Eagle's Cross has a very high Damage Per Second when used by a level 100 user. However the humble Junkbow was also considered as some assert that it is superior, despite it's comparably weak damage.
When a player is hit by a crossbow bolt they stagger regardless of the amount of damage. Some postulate that the faster rate of fire with the Junkbow causes opponents to stagger enough that a comparatively smaller group of melee fighters can land more attacks. In other words the expectation is that the weak Junkbow would cause victory by stun-locking opponents.
Regular Soldier Testing
When testing combatants at level 50 mid level quality was used for weapons and armor (Catun No. 3). Additionally the armor set used was the standard kit used by Holy Nation Paladins.
It was speculated that more common, representative armor like this might yield different results for weapon testing. In particular, the abysmal performance of the falling sun in previous testing was attributed to it being used against very heavy armor which would prevent it from severing limbs.
Given that Kenshi's combat mechanics focus more on disabling an opponent, the ability to cause amputation may be more important than being able to do more damage. The Holy Nation kit was arbitrarily selected among the 3 major factions, but deemed suitable because the coverage of the Holy Chest plate is low enough to allow for testing amputation while still being high enough to represent what a player would likely encounter during a base raid.
Fischer's Exact Test
Chi-Squared analysis was done using an online calculator located here using a simple 2x2 contingency table. For all tests the default parameters of a two sided tail, 1:1 odds and a 95% confidence interval were used.

Results

All heavy armor tested lost substantially to both White Plate & Assassin's Rags. The polearm continued to outperform the falling sun. Desert Sabres either matched the Polearm in performance or outperformed it when micromanaging.
Additionally, the dark leather shirt outperformed blackened chainmail. This bolsters claims that when robotic limbs are used that limb coverage is less important than total damage reduced to the torso and stomach.
The Assassin's Rags were undefeated in any category. It seems that the stat malus of heavy armor is indeed quite significant and likely responsible for consistent losses. But even when put against medium White Plate armor which has very little stat malus the Assassin's Rags continue to dominate; this is likely due to the bonuses to dexterity, combat speed and melee attack that they provide.
When pitted against identically sized squads, combined arm crossbows squads were utterly defeated by monolithic squads armed with Polearms.

Discussion

Kenshi has a wide variety of equipment and a great deal of complex calculations behind it. Despite that, there exist god-tier equipment that appears to provide little choice or strategy for a player looking to outfit a squad to be competitive.
Using robotic limbs changed the ideal composition for armor. Previous testing with crab armor indicated that Blackened Chain Mail had an edge over the Leather Turtleneck. This was attributed to crab armor only providing 90% coverage which meant that stronger protection for the arms could change the tide of lengthy battles; A disabled arm was an extreme liability.
However the massive HP boost provided by KLR arms seems to be significant enough that additional coverage at the cost of dexterity penalties is a bigger hindrance than help. After HP becomes substantially greater than the heath of the stomach or torso it makes more sense to forgo that protection if it means you can hit faster.
Players are unlikely in the early game to outfit their squad with masterwork KLR arms. During this phase one could speculate over whether to use chainmail or a leather turtleneck over the dark leather shirt. Previous testing indicated that chainmail was better for crab armor users fighting other crab armor users with leather turtlenecks, but that experimentation never considered light or medium armor which was shown here to be more effective regardless.
This challenges the wisdom of using chain armor at all. The use of a shirt can be forgone entirely if the player chooses to use White Plate Jackets. This armor provides 100% coverage for the torso, stomach and arms making a shirt redundant. Given White Plate Jackets outperformed Crab and Samurai armor and is more accessible and affordable it is difficult to justify the decision to use heavy armor at all, let alone chainmail in combination with it. This refutes the conclusion to use Crab armor in previous testing.
Given the outsized impact Assassin's Rags had (presumably due to the status boons) it is probably inadvisable to use chainmail and its debuffs alongside it. The Assassin's Rags provide relatively poor coverage, so a shirt of some kind is likely useful. What the ideal shirt for an Assassin's Rags user without KLR arms would be is unanswered in this study.
The Assassin's Rags provided adequate protection when dealing with ranged opponents. One plausible weakness would be the scant protection they provide against harpoons, which was not tested. Even if they are unparalleled in melee further research should be done to see if a single shot from a harpoon could kill a character using them. If that turns out to be the case then White Plate Jackets would apparently be preferable to any heavy armor.
White Plate Jackets outperformed both Crab and Samurai armor when using Nodachis which deal purely cut damage and have a penalty against armor. This is perplexing because heavy armor appears to have been intended to be the best choice for mitigating cut damage, but the stat malus associated with it causes light armor to be a better choice (at least against the weapons tested in this study).
The Falling Sun continued to yield mediocre results compared to the Polearm. Oddly, the Falling Sun was noticed to cause amputation semi-regularly in the tests against Polearms. Despite this knocking out the Polearm user, the remaining Polearms managed to win most fights anyway and bandage their crippled comrade post victory. While limb loss after battle is fairly devastating, this has limited utility from the players perspective; there isn't a strong need to amputate an enemies limbs because it doesn't matter how you disable your opponent as long as they are disabled. It probably makes more sense to just use the Polearm because it wins way more often.
The Polearm appears unbeatable with very few exceptions. Previous testing indicated the only weapon observed to outperform the Polearm was the Paladin's Cross and that was contingent on using it against skeletons. This research indicates that the Desert Sabre can be more effective than the Polearm indoors, but only if the Sabre user is not subject to the Polearms area of effect damage; i.e., the Sabre has to fight the Polearm one on one which requires micromanagement.
A particular surprise was how the Polearm performed by level 50 users indoors against Desert Sabre users in squads. Here Polearms have a very strong malus and the Sabers have a strong boon. Despite this there wasn't a statistically significant difference between them.
The Polearm did lose against Sabres frequently when forced to fight one on one indoors. From the players perspective this means that defending indoors with Sabres is a viable strategy early to mid game, although attacking grouped NPC Sabres indoors with Polearms is also surprisingly viable.
Enemies that use polearms are typically the most high level squads in the game (e.g., the skeletal legion and southern hive). But these late game squads almost exclusively use polearms themselves. This means a player's late game Polearm squad would not have any disadvantage indoors as both squads would have the same penalty. Furthermore, by the time a player is encountering late game squads like this they've likely leveled up enough to avoid the need to micromanage regardless.
Whether such a niche use case justifies sinking experience into building up the Sabre skill when they could be leveling up the Polearm is a matter for players to decide. It's difficult to pronounce Sabre's categorically superior, particularly when they appear to break even with Polearms when forced to fight in groups indoors.
Crossbows/Polearm hybrid squads turned out to be unviable against pure Polearm squads. Every crossbow simulation ended with unfavorable results when the competing squad invested in a Polearm instead. Crossbows probably would perform better during sieges where they had a benefit of a wall, but a turret would likely be a better option at that point. The Junkbows ability to stunlock evenly sized forces was insufficient. This strategy is probably only viable when many weak characters are fighting a single strong character, assuming it works at all.
The lack of some rock-paper-scissors mechanics in Kenshi limits how the player can think strategically about squad composition. Modding could plausibly create more interesting, balanced relationships between equipment. For example, increasing the damage of weapons like Katanas while simultaneously increasing the penalty against heavy armor could make them a viable alternative to Polearms in many common situations.
The interplay of armor penetration and raw damage could create a better defined role for light, medium and heavy builds. Additionally, crossbows might be enhanced to have a viable role in the field as they do not appear to excel there or behind allied walls where they could use a turret instead.
Overall if a players goal is to outfit a squad for the highest combat potential, the data indicates the choice is mostly linear- outfit the entire squad the same way, preferring Assassin's Rags or White Plate Jackets along with a Polearm or Paladin's Cross (both weapons can be available via a backpack).
As far as choice of character goes, Skeletons were shown to significantly outperform humans despite having no head protection. No comparison was done between the Shek and Skeletons as it currently unsettled whether a Shek can actually achieve a strength of 120 in vanilla Kenshi or if that is a bug in FCS. Regardless, in Vanilla Kenshi it is impractical to obtain very many skeletons at all without modding. The higher health pool of the Shek would likely make them the most accessible, competitive recruits when trying to build a strong military squad. If creating a squad of 30 soldiers it would be unsurprising if the majority of them needed to be Shek.

2024.05.19 01:21 DatUsaGuy How have y’all felt about the general balance and gameplay additions of Season 3 (Strive)?

Here’s a general list of changes/additions with Season 3 for anyone who doesn’t know/remember:
There is of course more to it with specific character changes and differences between the initial S3 patch vs the December patch, but those are still some of the most universal and impactful changes of the season.
I’ve been seeing a lot of talk on X (formerly Twitter) about it and I’m curious to see how opinions are on here.
Personally speaking, I lean most towards “step in the right direction.” I like them adding new special moves a lot. Goldburst being positive bonus feels more reasonable. Deflect shield I’m okay with although don’t hold much strong feelings outside of “I like having more stuff.”
Then while I was initially mixed on both the weight and the “fullscreen burst” changes, I think overall they were both good as what I wanted out of both was for most character to have even more combo routes they’d like to do. In reality though, I feel like weight barely was a factor (except I heard specifically Millia really had to take it into account for combo routing). Then the full-screen burst I was worried would take away from cool burst-safe combos, but those mostly just favored certain characters incredibly hard (Chaos and Ram most notoriously) which wasn’t very cool.
On the negative end though, I don’t think Wild assault is super fun to play or deal with. White is the current evil which my main has and it just feels too silly. Don’t hate blue too much but I’m glad I haven’t gotten hit by Bridget doing an unblockable yet. Blue in my experience though seems to be fairly similar in a lot of situations to Red except somewhat worse (even though it’s better on block). Speaking of which. I don’t like Red very much as it increases the damage even more for a game that has really high damage. I do like having more combo options in the game thanks to it, but I wish damage was tuned down significantly more to account for it.
I’m also not sure we need as much burst generation as we currently do. Maybe I would be okay with current Wild Assault if we just didn’t see them as often, I’m not sure. Still though, overall I do like how Season 3 has been and look forward to the future of Strive.

I maxed out my lines of credit to buy sol at $13 during the SBF collapse, I begged GCR for months to make him +$100m on a mispriced Trump election bet, I’m comfortable making predictions that few people agree with.
I have a new prediction that no one is considering: the first memecoin to surpass its native chain’s market cap.
This is much more possible and probable than is currently priced in. Pumpfun (a sol memecoin launchpad) already earns nearly twice as much as the entire Solana network.
A dog coin, or cat coin won’t be able to flip Solana. Why? There’s no underlying market narrative for those coins to do that. More specifically, there’s no direct market competition that compels people to make it happen—after all, it takes people to make it happen, it doesn’t happen magically by itself.
Recall when Shiba Inu came out, it was directly competing with Doge for who would be the dominant blue chip dog coin, and that direct competition led to a very powerful market narrative that Shib will flip Doge. It got really close to flipping, minting many millionaires in the process. Those who were early simply saw the flipping narrative even when Shib was +10,000x away from doing so.
So, what is the parallel here? What could actually flip Solana?
Solana could flip Solana. I came across a truly unique memecoin called Solana (SOL), a carbon copy of Solana itself, no gimmicks, no making it sound retarded like Jeo Boden or Tremp.
It has a token price of +$320/token which is the first time I’ve ever seen that from a memecoin.
It appears to be a memecoin that’s not trying to be funny at all, which is also a first.
Instead, it's sole purpose appears to be to unironically flip Solana, so that Solana is the new base token for the Solana ecosystem. Given that Solana is currently at $100B market cap, this narrative has the highest potential upside of any memecoin in the world right now.
Just the confusion factor alone of people buying Solana with Solana is enough to cause a serious repricing upwards.
Currently, the market cap is $2k and the liquidity pool contains essentially the entire supply of the token (out of 7 total SOL tokens, with 9 decimals).
I have a feeling those decimals are going to be worth a lot soon.

2024.05.19 00:52 xXxSolidariDaddyxXx I developed a couple take down combos

Background:

I'm a noob ofc, but I feel pretty proud of finally figuring out ways to put together the 4 takedowns that actually clicked for me so far. I learned my breakfalls to the satisfaction of our judo guy. I've experiemented with those "basic takedown/throws" lists and pestered the hell out of coaches and judo/wrestling guys. 4 clicked and I started experiemnting with them. I think I like to attack limbs first because... I have really long limbs. As a taller heavyweight the usual beginner takedowns--hip tosses (ogoshi) and double legs are hard to land. Big level changes require so much setup for me. Against smaller agile people I'm just to slow. Against other big people they're really risky--fuck getting sprawled on and/or guillotined by 220+ lb people. Neck crank city.
So this is what I've got.

From a collar and sleeve grip (ideally high cross collar plus tight wrist control):

  1. Take a step back or better yet spin them backwards to get them to take a big step forward with their lead leg.
  2. Hook ankle pick (the kind where I hook their foot with my foot to trap it and further off balance them before I reach)...
  3. Snapdown with whatever grip I can get while the momentum is fresh.
  4. Osoto gari the in the opposite direction I snapped them down.

From a 2-on-1 or if I can at least snag their elbow:

  1. Arm drag (supposedly this can be a takedown by itself, but for now I'm just using it force them to shift their weight or step)...
  2. Osoto gari from the "front 2-on-1" or "seoi nage grip"--really have to rip this one so they can't recover and work towards my back.
  3. Switch to a normal 2-on-1 aka the russian tie. Make sure to lean on their shoulder so keep up the pressure.
  4. Kick/sweep their near leg to force it back.
  5. Hook ankle pick their far leg.

From a tie up or clinch where I can get good head position

  1. Duck under. The duck under seems simple but it's not. There's a lot of nuance to both the steup and follow up I'm trying to work out.
  2. Drop ankle pick (the kind where you drop to one knee) on the side I ducked.
  3. Drop ankle pick the far leg if they they take near one away. I really only have to move my arm.
  4. ??? Double? There's one somewhere around here, but it'll be a while before I start to sense it. The duck is a safer entry than a traditional shot for me and the ankle picks factor in too, but I'm not ready for that yet.

immediate work to be done

  1. Practice the duck under, arm drag, and snapdown a lot. They look easy but are not and they are the keys to letting me chain takedowns.
  2. Keep practicing grip fighting and stance without hyperfocusing on them.
  3. Work my defense.
  4. Tighten up the ankle pick and osoto gari mechanics.

stuff I probably need to do in the future but am not worried abt rn

  1. Learn a few foot sweeps and other ashi waza. I like the hook ankle pick and osoto lot and using my feet as weapons feels pretty natural.
  2. Try out some te waza like tai otoshi.
  3. Work on my shots. Even if I don't use them much... A credible fake double can open doors based on my experimentation.
  4. Learn knee picks and singles that compliment or expand upon my ankle picks. Sometimes we get one of those by accident anyway.
  5. Learn a sacrifice throw.
  6. Learn a takedown from the back--mat return, ura nage, etc.
  7. Develop a way to attack the rear leg sometimes. Right now I only attack the front leg and that's fine but I'll need to learn sasae or something eventually.
  8. Make sure whatever 3-6 takedowns I eventually settle on work gi and no gi.
  9. Figure out something for chest-to-chest clinches other than "pummel for an underhook and go for an osoto!".... or at least get good at that move.
  10. Try a lifting throw, just for funsies

For the 1.000.000 Credits, I received 325.000 Scraps. I maxed all campaign cars, so all BPs I received got converted to Scrap. The best conversion rate between Credit and Scraps seems to be 3 credits for 1 scrap.
Using this conversion rate, I checked the viability of the Gold components from the Chop Shop:
500k Credits converts to 157k scrap, which is almost price of a Gold component from the Chop Shop. If you have every campaign cars at full * then buying upgrade crates to get Gold Sports components makes perfect sense. Price is the same and you get a whole bunch of parts, too.
720k Credits converts to 235k scrap, which is just a bit more then a Gold component costs from the Chop Shop. If you have every campaign cars at full * then buying upgrade crates to get Gold Super components makes sense. Price very close and you get a whole bunch of parts, too.
950k Credits converts to 305k scrap. That is way short of the Hyper Gold component price in the Chop Shop. It may still make sense if you factor in the crazy number of parts you need but you would need to spend about 25% more to have enough scrap to get the Hyper Gold component from the Chop Shop.

2024.05.19 00:19 Cainden I don't like the balancing of this game. **(Rant)**

I've been having a pretty fun time with the game so far, some of the bosses have felt unfair, but the Dracula fight feels bullshit. I don't think it's too hard (I've beaten malenia in elden ring, THAT fight is too hard), it's just unfun - I'll explain why.
Healing is an incredibly weak stat. All healing is combat is capped at around 15% of your max health, from the lowest point at your max health that you've been at. The way it's implemented is such an odd positive feedback loop - you have to dodge ALMOST everything in order to avoid taking damage, because if you take too much damage, you've permanently lost that health for the battle (aside from the 3 healing orbs). If you can manage to take a bit of damage and then heal back that 15%, no worries! You healed before taking more damage, so that healing is okay! But uh oh, you took 50% of your health because you got hit by 2 attacks in a row, or the boss grabbed you and threw you into the aoe damage zone on the ground (and if your veil happens to be on cooldown this actually does 80% or kills you)? Guess you've now permanently lost 35% of your health for this battle. Sucks to be you! HA! "Sucks." Vampire pun.
My current build is chaos focused, I have 90 gear rating, use a crossbow, 65 spell power, 46% spell crit chance, 34% spell vamp, the capped 40% spell cooldown reduction(also bullshit), and almost no movement speed (crossbow gives 4.2%). With this build it is impossible to beat Dracula. I can see his attacks coming for the most part, but in most cases my character just does not move fast enough to get out of the way. The 34% spell vamp I have is all but useless, so I get hit by several un-dodgeable attacks because my only dodge skill has an 8 (sometimes 9) second cooldown, and It's impossible for me to heal back to full health after taking an absurd amount of damage from attacks because healing is extremely limited (for some unknown reason).
Now I could very easily change my build to use the movement speed amulet, and movement speed gear, as well as put some counter abilities on (I don't really like them since they're boring and it doesn't feel like I'm playing a mage if I use them since at that point I only have one offensive spell lol), but that's not the way that I want to play my character, and I haven't needed to do that at any point in my playthrough thus far.
Side Note Here: Why is there no like.. staff weapon in this game for mages? Maybe the staff could have one of it's weapon skills as a counter, but with very limited damage on the offensive side, so mage builds can actually have two offensive spells? And if mage builds aren't an intended design... why are like 75% of all the spells in the game built around spell power and function mostly as damage instead of utility?
I made a recent post about cooldown reduction having a cap at 40%, and then healing also has a cap at 15% or so of your max hp. ALL healing, other than the few health pickups that bosses drop at 50%, during combat is massively capped. Why are these two things so limited? Are players supposed to have to play the game in the very specific way of using mobility and counters? Why even have the other abilities and gear that allows you to try and play the game with this other non-mobility non-counter playstyle? It doesn't make sense. Just feels like needless limiting on playstyle diversity.
If healing would be OP if it didn't have a cap... then why not just lower the numbers? 10% spell vamp is a massive amount, but it's meaningless if you can't heal that much. So why is it 10% with a ridiculously high limiting factor instead of just around 5%? Healing items also stop if you take any damage during combat. Why also have a temporary hard cap on healing? Why isn't mobility limited? If you use your veil, why are you still allowed to use dashes from weapon skills or counters? Of course that scenario makes no sense, that would be absurd, yet that is what is done for healing.
At the end of the day, I just don't feel the urge to keep trying this fight. It doesn't feel fun. My build feels needlessly nerfed - my cooldown reduction is capped at 40% when I could be at 50-60%, and the 34% spellvamp I put effort into getting in my build feels unnecessarily limited, and as a player I'm not sure why. It's made a lot of fights up to this point a lot more difficult than they needed to be, but I was having fun throwing out explosion spells. However, now it actually feels impossibly difficult to win... unless I change my build to mobility. I don't really want to put in the time or effort to build other gear in order to beat this boss, I might come back to it later, but I'd rather just go play another game that isn't extremely limiting for seemingly no reason. I haven't even gotten to the third phase a single time (which I could probably do with some practice, I've only tried the fight around 10 times so far), but I just can't imagine surviving that phase.

This intel is from the wikia and manga so some small technical spoilers: the numbered Kaiju like No8 and No9 are freaks that reached the level of Daikaiju while the Yoju seem to be the mobs. Honjus are typically mob leaders and can be at Daikaiju level and those in turn can take the role of Honjus or operate alone (think 9 and 8). There is this special category which is called the "Identified Kaiju" which are Daikajus that need multiple officers and many time to track and take down (again, 8 and 9) and that their bodies are then weaponized for human use after they are gifted to Top Officers.
Kaiju are also measured by Fortitude (so specific Kaiju size isn't a factor): 0 through 6 (or above in some cases) are Yoju, above 6 and up are the Hojus and, inside that category, the fortitude that Kafka power showed was at 9.8 a few episodes ago. Oh, and Yojus, can create other Yojus or be created from a Honu as shown in this video.
Size is indeed a category but, again, it doesn't necessarily mean stronger the bigger it, are: miniature, midsized, giant and supergiant. I believe that this Honju fell in the Supergiant category while the Yoju in the Midsized category when they are active oh, and it seemed these Kaijus were modified for this mission add that factor in.
For record, we don't really know if that parasitic fly was No8 actual size but, if so, that mean that is a bit above a Miniature sized Identified Daikaju. Factor that topic and you can get a level of apocalyptic danger that this world has just been exposed if the Daikaju can be rat sized or even smaller.
In the other spectrum, the DF suits are clearly explained in Episode 3 that the closer you are to 100% the closer you are to the Kaiju suit you are wearing but, as we will see eventually, the closer that Officers are to that number the greater the danger their lives run of being cooked by the suits. Mina has always been a freak, Hoshina tried to get very close to her numbers in the midst of combat but he almost collapse. Bakko is a mystery in of it itself since Chapter 106.1 showed him and Mina in a laboratory so there might be more to the Defense Force desperate attempts at combating Kaijus.
Kafka and 9 are also monsters in their own right as Kafka showed 0% percent of tuning but the man already had a suit so it might be that No8 is adjusting itself to the DF equipment so, if 8 can absorb that gear the numbered users might want to keep their distance when Kafka is fighting against a particular strong enemy. Mina the freak (apologize but this woman has been like this since her start in the DF) isn't so tired or overheated for likely one or two reasons: she is always being transported to and from her firing positions and, unless she is using small arms fire with an equal monster of a strength, her metabolism isn't cooking her up; the second factor might just be something in her particular genes that No9 wanted for himself. Give Mina some regeneration powers as well with her being so in tune with the DF gear you have yourself someone who can give Kafka and 8 a run for his money beyond the other numbered users.
Number 9 has been shown to grow stronger and can manipulate the Kaiju so take that into notice during current events,>! Kafka and 8 will need help to finish him up for good and I have the following tag teams that can make it on time: Bakko and/or Mina depending if she goes a controlled mutation!<.

Kevin Kelly is a forward thinker, speaker and author. He founded Wired magazine and writes with great insight. Six years ago he turned 68. For each year of his life, he gifted a piece of advice to his children; things he wished he had known at their age. Each year since, on his birthday, he has added to that initial list. Below are ten pieces of advice from Kevin’s 74th birthday update, relating to happiness, habits and progress.

Happiness

1.Where you live (what city, what country) has more impact on your well-being than any other factor. Where you live is one of the few things in your life you can choose and change. In my biased option, Bath is a beautiful city. It’s been my home for the last 30 years and brings me great joy.
  1. The highest form of wealth is deciding you have enough. My instinct is to believe that if I had more money, I’d be happier. However, those richer and wiser than me have persuaded me otherwise.
  2. You’ll never meet a very successful pessimistic person. If you want to be remarkable, get better at being optimistic. I can choose how I interpret the world. I chose to be optimistic with a dose of realism.
  3. Asking “what-if?” about your past is a waste of time; asking “what-if?” about your future is tremendously productive. I can’t change the past, but I can influence the future.

Habits

  1. What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important. To get the important stuff done, avoid the demands of the urgent. I try to ensure that activities with longer term benefits are addressed.
  2. If you are out of ideas, go for a walk. A good walk empties the mind and then refills it with new stuff. My daily walk gives me space to think and reflect. A life changer for me.
  3. You have 5 minutes to act on a new idea before it disappears from your mind. If I have an idea, I note it down in my mobile notes app.

Progress

  1. The best way to criticise something is to make something better. I love building things and seeing others use them.
  2. The more persistent you are, the more chances you get to be lucky. I find the concept of increasing one’s luck surface area to be an empowering idea. I try to position myself to take advantage of lucky breaks.
  3. Decisions like to present themselves as irreversible, like a one-way door. But most deciding points are two-way. Don’t get bogged down by decisions. You can usually back up if needed. Few things in life are permanent. While hard to comprehend, this reality is liberating.

The landscape of Venture Capital (VC) in web3 has witnessed a significant decline compared to its flourishing state in 2021. This shift is primarily attributed to various factors, with risk tolerance being a notable one. Numerous venture capitalists were eager to invest substantially in the booming market. However, with money becoming tighter, fewer are willing to take the risks now.

The Venture Capital (VC) journey has been rollercoaster ride since the outset of the 2020 Bull market. Funding in web3 quickly escalated from $1 billion in Q4 2020 to $9 billion in Q1 2021, only to plummet by 82% YoY to $1.7 billion as of Q1 2023. In the first quarter of 2022, several VC-backed startups witnessed substantial investment rounds exceeding $100 million, with enterprises like ConsenSys, Polygon, and FTX securing more than $400 million. Fast forward to the current landscape of Venture Capital (VC) funding in the web3 space, there has been a noticeable shift from the exuberance of the past Bull market to a more cautious and discerning approach among investors. This transformation is primarily driven by several factors, including a decrease in risk tolerance, tighter capital availability, and a reassessment of investment strategies.
During the Bull market, VC funding in web3 experienced exponential growth, with billions of dollars flowing into blockchain, cryptocurrency, and decentralized finance (DeFi) projects. However, as the market matured and underwent significant corrections, investors became more wary of the risks associated with nascent technologies and speculative investments. This newfound caution has led to a decline in overall VC funding in the web3 space.
In February 2024, a record 114 Web3 and blockchain projects raised a total of $642.1 million in funding. The focus of the funds was mainly in the DeFi and blockchain infrastructure development sectors.
Amid the Bull market, companies and funds were penning checks with minimal due diligence. Now that the reserves have dwindled and valuations have undergone significant corrections, many VCs are hesitant to channel capital into this risky, nascent sector. A phrase resonating among some web3 turned AI now back to web3 VCs is, “we only follow on with tier 1s”. Suggesting that since their investment strategies lack a profound understanding of the market dynamics, instead, they will only follow investment patterns of top-tier VCs. Rather than maintaining a clear focus on specific segments like infrastructure or decentralized finance (DeFi), their tactic is to pursue any project led by a name-brand VC. This is a stark contrast from the past where VCs were open to taking risks on fresh and innovative ideas; now they lean on the extensive due diligence teams and brand recognition of major firms like a16z, Sequoia, Pantera, etc., to prosper in a market they scarcely understand.
From the funds’ perspective, this strategy makes sense—why not ride the coattails of large funds and inject capital into any round they are spearheading that will welcome you? However, does this strategy favor the companies and the overarching web3 ecosystem?
Companies seek VC funding not only for financial backing but also for the invaluable guidance and strategic partnerships that ensue. If a company secures a top-tier fund to lead their round, filling it with other strategic players becomes a simpler endeavor, and often, the lead will assist in attracting additional investors. Allowing these tag-along funds to join the cap table could potentially become a liability rather than an asset unless they share the vision and offer value beyond the financial facet. Regarding the broader web3 ecosystem, I believe that this “follow the tier 1” strategy hampers innovation. Not every concept will resonate with the biggest and best names in Venture Capital, and consequently, many exceptional companies may fall through the cracks if these funds are absent to catch them and take the risk.
The VC funding scenario in the web3 domain has undergone a radical transformation since the days of Bull market optimism. The risk appetite has considerably dwindled, and presently, even some of the finest projects are struggling to secure funding. The emerging trend of trailing the lead of prominent VCs is unhealthy for the venture capital ecosystem and bodes ill for innovation in the web3 space.

  2. If you are out of ideas, go for a walk. A good walk empties the mind and then refills it with new stuff. My daily walk gives me space to think and reflect. A life changer for me.
  3. You have 5 minutes to act on a new idea before it disappears from your mind. If I have an idea, I note it down in my mobile notes app.

  1. The best way to criticise something is to make something better. I love building things and seeing others use them.
  2. The more persistent you are, the more chances you get to be lucky. I find the concept of increasing one’s luck surface area to be an enpowering idea. I try to position myself to take advantage of lucky breaks.
