It's actually hard to classify Vamsy as a director, while his movies have a very aesthetic feel, he combines it with a fast paced style of narration, rapid fire dialog and a very unconventional style of movie making. That is the reason why his style of movie making was not universally liked, much before Ram Gopal Varma or Sandeep Vanga, he was the true cult director. Or one should say an auteur.
His movies had his own distinctive style. good or bad, that was his trademark. And he covered different genres, from artistic( Sitara) to murder mysteries( Anveshana) to comedies( Ladies Tailor, April 1 Vidudala) to family dramas( Preminchu Pelladu). 4
His real name was Nallamilli Bavireddy and Vamsy was his pen name, that he choose for the screen too. His first movie Manchu Pallaki(1982) itself gave an indication of his talent.

A story of 5 friends played by Chiru( in his early days), Rajendra Prasad, Saichand, Narayana Rao, Saichand and Girish( of Saptapadi) fame, whose life changes after they come in contact with Suhasini. It was a remake of the 1981 Tamizh movie Palaivana Solai, and though not a very big success, the movie gained lot of appreciation from the family audiences for it's very sensitive storytelling. It came as a breath of fresh air in Telugu cinema, that was getting saturated with routine movies.

https://preview.redd.it/7nbdxyri1l0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=aff15a2e23dde274ae98e624b9533d647dfc415c
It was Sitara in 1984 that made everyone take notice of Vamsy, based on his own novel Mahal lo Kokila. The movie also marked Bhanu Priya's debut, as Sitara, a women on the move, who is helped by a kind hearted photographer Devadas( Subhalekha Sudhakar), and helps her to become a movie star later. However when she refuses to go to a particular village for a shooting, Devadas demands an explanation, and she recounts her rather painful past.
The movie straddles two different worlds that of the Zamindaris, and their false prestige, that makes them show off as wealthy, when in reality most of them are actually paupers, and that of the movie stars, and paparazzi. There is a lot to write about this movie, but couple of things, it has the very distinctive style of K.Viswanath in many scenes, under whom Vamsy worked as an assistant director.
And it began Vamsy's collaboration with Illayaraja, who would go on to compose some memorable songs for his movies later. As also the Godavari backdrop, being a native of that place, not many movie directors captured the region as well as Vamsy did, be it the natural beauty or the dialect or the traditions.
It also marked a very visual style of storytelling that would be a feature of most Vamsy movies going ahead. Also the beautiful sunrise and sunset shots, along the Godavari river, contrasting it with the rather claustrophobic atmosphere of the Zamindar Chander( Sarathbabu) mahal. Sitara went on to become one of the biggest hits of that year, as Bhanupriya became a star.

It was with Anveshana that Vamsy came into his own, developing his very distinctive style of movie making. I had already written about it here in detail, but would like to point out that much before RGV in Shiva, Vamsy used the tracking shots to very good effect here, especially in the forest scenes.

https://preview.redd.it/tbj7egrt4l0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d2230564e08a810f894758c1682812e8ab7eb96
Preminchu Pelladu Rajendra Prasad's first movie as a leading hero, dealt with the clash between old and new. Satyanarayana plays Kurmavataram, a conservative, orthodox Brahmin, who is taught a lesson in humanist values by his grandson Rajendra Prasad, and his estranged grand daughter Bhanupriya. Quite a good movie, had a memorable soundtrack by Illayaraja with songs like "Vayyari Godaramma", "Gopemmma Chethilo", "Nirantharam Vasanthamu", "Nee Chaitra Veena" remaining memorable today.
His next movie Aalapana was not that great with a very disjointed narration, and trying to be a cross between an artistic movie and a thriller, fell in between. However Illayaraja's score was usual great in this movie.

https://preview.redd.it/irmgr9rn5l0d1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=208996a17ba7472498124ade440a03b5b540a7c9
It was Ladies Tailor, that would turn out to be a true cult movie. The story of a tailor Sundaram( Rajendra Prasad) who wants to get rich quick, and follows the advice of an astrologer who predicts that a lady with a mole on her thigh would be fortunate for him. While set in the Godavari region, the narration was totally different, with more risque double meaning dialog, the typical Godavari Yaasa spoken among the working class. And characters like Battala Satyam( Mallikarjuna Rao), Sitaramudu( Subhalekha Sudhakar), the hero's sidekicks, the school teacher Sujatha( Archana), the 3 women Nagamani( Y Vijaya), Neelaveni( Sandhya), Daiya( Deepa) whom the hero chases around, the village head Venkataratnam( Pradeep Sakthi) who hates lovers after a guy duped his sister.
The movie was a true cult flick, that polarized audiences, the college students, youth loved it, while the family audiences hated it. But over the years it has become a cult classic of sorts, and once again a memorable score from Illayaraja with a series of superhit songs "Gopilola", "Porabatidi", "Ekkada Ekkada", "Hayamma Hayamma".

https://preview.redd.it/3s3ikjq97l0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=7526167ee734cec685369b01bfe88c686a86f350
His next movie Lawyer Suhasini was a disappointment in many ways, again Maharshi was one of those "You hate it or love it" kind of movies. The story of unrequited one sided love, of the title character who pursues the woman he loves Suchitra( Shantipriya). It was the Arjun Reddy of those times, and most audiences did not like the style of narration or the rather down beat ending, as the movie flopped. It however had a great score again by Illayaraja with songs like "Sumam Prati Sumam", "Maata Raani Mounam".

https://preview.redd.it/vxxwcf3z7l0d1.png?width=304&format=png&auto=webp&s=eb207b04203df4e501767e190907dfc01e2835e9
Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Recording Dance Troupe to me again one of his best movies ever, set against the backdrop of the recording dance troupes, with a love story thrown in between. The movie was a complete fun ride, with dialogues set in typical Godavari Yaasa, and memorable performances by Naresh, Kota, Mallikarjuna Rao, Ralapalli, Thanikella Bharani, Y.Vijaya. Great soundtrack again by Illayaraja where he also uses old songs of NTR, ANR, Krishna to good effect.

https://preview.redd.it/vl0ja77k8l0d1.png?width=1242&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f976ceb266cc8734bbecc06e4261222dfa3b9b7
Chettu Kinda Pleader was another superb comic thriller, and for a change Vamsy sets the movie in Tirupathi. Remake of the Malayalam movie Thanthram, the movie has Rajendraprasad as Balaraju, a down and out lawyer, who gets to fight the case of a rich widow Sujatha( Urvasi), when her father in law Sarabayya( Gollapudi) files a suit claiming the property is his legally. Vamsy wonderfully combines comedy with drama and thriller, creating a really entertaining movie. Somehow it was not much of a success when released, but in later years has become a favorite on video, DVD. Again a superb musical score by Illayaraja with songs like "Jigijigaa", "Allibili Kalala", "Neeru gaari paari poku", "Chalti ka Naam Gaadi".

https://preview.redd.it/84okdbaa9l0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ff09b1aa067cb05ed88cb7e0affd1b9c50179e3
April 1 Vidudula would be Vamsy's last really great movie starring Rajendra Prasad as a smooth talking videographer Diwakaram, who lies, cheats his way to success. His life takes a turn when the woman he loves Bhuvaneshwari( Shobana) puts a condition that he should not tell any lies for one month, and should speak only truth, throwing everything into turmoil. Setting against backdrop of Rajahmundry Railway Quarters, the movie combines comedy and drama effectively, and went on to become one of the biggest hits in his career. Again a superb score by Illayaraja with songs like "Vompula Vaikhiri", " Nijamante", "Chukkalu Temanna", "Okate Aasa".

https://preview.redd.it/dbq554xfal0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=ef54473e2c9f33d2a829c57af2aaded54a2f7bc5
However Detective Narada with Mohan Babu turned out to be a huge disappointment, as the movie bombed badly. And with Joker, he stopped his collaboration with Ilayaraja and composed the music himself, which in a way started his decline. Vamsy's movies were not the same without Illayaraja, and a series of very disappointing movies followed. Even though he did make a comeback in 2002 with Avunu Vallidaru Ishtapaddaru, it was nowhere close to his earlier classics.
Apart from being a director, Vamsy is also a great writer, he wrote 5 novels, and around 360 short stories in Telugu. His series of stories Maa Pasarlapudi Kathalu, Maa Diguva Godavari Kathalu are a wonderful depiction of life in rural Godavari districts, on par with RK Narayan's Malgudi Days. Not many explored Godavari districts as intimately as he did covering the world of recording dance troupe artists, railway quarters, villages, creating characters with all the quirks, eccentricities, faults who remain memorable to date.

2024.05.06 22:38 av3 San Antonio's Week In Movies [2024-05-06 to 2024-05-13]

This week brings us a change in how Santikos does their website, at a grave disadvantage to how I assemble the list. I can no longer see all Santikos theaters simultaneously and instead have to click into each one to see what they're showing. Going forward, I'll check Palladium, Embassy, and then Casa Blanca, as those are the ones with the most one-off showings. I'll see if there's any way I can bug them for an export, though I recently dated one of their sales people and we didn't end on great terms. I guess that's Hollywood for ya.

Kerala Pure Handloom Sarees - Popularity & History
The sarees from Kerala have not been able to become popular in north India because of their simple character and lack of publicity. The elegant saree of white colour with gold border is unique because of its natural colour texture and gold border. This saree lends an extraordinary elegance to the person who wears it. Every woman from Malayalam possesses at least one such saree.

https://preview.redd.it/p3md1j15grxc1.jpg?width=1366&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82b3a8f77ab7b11bf128c7c96aab2b51d653ea43
Traditionally women in Kerala also wear a two- piece cloth named Munda which has natural body colour and breath-taking border shades which after wearing look exactly like a saree.
The traditional Kerala saree is hand-woven and is 100% unbleached cotton. The cotton is known for its fineness count in its weaving. The traditional design of a Kerala saree has a one inch to six-seven inch pallav while the border remained plain.
But things have changed now. In modern days to compete with sarees of other states the saree has a border and pallav which goes up to one metre or so. The border and pallav have natural things like animal, peacock or flower designs woven on them. The saree is also available in cheques and strips and a wide variety of other designs as well as in other varieties of fabric such as silk and cotton mixed cloth.
Kerala is also famous for making unbleached cotton handloom cloth commonly known as Kora cloth. This is exported and occupies a proud place in the garment industry. Balarampuram in Tiruvanthapuram district the capital of Kerala is a most historically important place for handloom fabric specially the traditional wear. It follows a 150 year-old tradition. It was during the reign of Maharaja Balaram Varma which dates back to year 1798 to 1810 that handloom weaving was first introduced at Balarampuram.
The weavers originally belong to a community who migrated from Nagarcoil and Tirunandi in Tamil Nadu. They used to produce superfine cloth for the royal family. The tradition spread from them to local weavers. The weavers use original-type throw-shuttle pitlooms for the production of exclusive cotton sarees with pure zari.
Named after the village of its origin handloom in north Parabal, Ernakulam district is famous for its fine weaving and special effects in pure cotton and silk sarees.
Kathampallisarees from north of Kerala are masterpieces made of high quality yarn using traditional and modern method. Kathampalli sarees are famous for design, quality, varied colour combination and ornamental zari work and border.
The weaving is done in unique style giving care to the thread and applying a special kind of paste to make the saree strong and long lasting. District Tressor is also known for its handloom fabric. Here a community of Devangas who immigrated from Karnataka are engaged in weaving the Kasavir sarees which are being produced here generally with half-fine zari and so prices are more economical.
Kathampalli sarees are preferred by the middle class people because of comparative low prices. The sarees from Kerala are used by the women in metros for dinner parties the ones with zari work. They are not used for wedding and engagement parties as they are not so glamorous.
The ones with simple border and pallav are used as casual wear. For lack of proper publicity it has not been able to capture the market for good varieties with zari work. They are available in metros in the Government emporiums. The cotton sarees are ideal for summer wear and can compete with sarees made in any other state.
The sarees with zari are a bit expensive but ordinary sarees with cotton border and pallav are highly affordable and are within the reach of a middle class person.

2024.04.23 23:58 Actual_Issue9655 Bumble worked! (In a totally unexpected way)

Quick background - Using bumble for over 2 years. Occasional matches. Very few dates. Nothing magical. Expected nothing magical either.
I got food poisoned. I was doing my PG from a college near Delhi (originally from Kerala). The food poisoning got pretty bad that, my kidney started showing trouble. Creatine jumped up, Kidney swelled up, and Poop brrppprrrgggrrr continuously (consistency of dosa batter).
I was admitted to a hospital near my college for a couple of days, and that hospital was not enough as stuff got too serious. My father came there and took me to a big hospital in Delhi. (None of that was easy. It was his first time on a flight alone, first time in a foreign state alone, and a lot of first time things he had to do). My friend (roommate) was there to help us the whole time. He too came to Delhi with us. (He is too good a guy. I love him! [platonically of course]). So, we reached Apollo and things started getting slightly better, but it was only the beginning. A love story I never expected, along with many other things, were waiting for me there.
So, the count of creatine is ideally suppose to be below 1.0, and due to my kidneys not working and staying undetected for many days, creatine had reached over 6.0 and a lot of other chemicals' count in my body started showing unusual values. This weakened my body, and my mental state. I was not in my complete senses. First change in behaviour was that I started talking more than usual. No inhibition to talk to anyone and everyone.
I don't really remember a lot from the night I reached the hospital, but when I got my senses, I was in some random area in the hospital, (which I now I assume to be the High-Dependancy Unit [a lower tier of ICU]). One relieving thing was that I was surrounded by nurses and doctors from Kerala, and they were all talking in Malayalam. (Pretty natural. There were a lot of Malayali staff in that hospital). Everyone behaved unusually friendly. Apparently Malayali staff were like a family and Malayali patients were a pretty rare occurrence there. They kind of accepted me as a visitor to their family. I never felt so welcome in any hospital ever. (Indians care for indians when outside India. Malayalis care for malayalis when outside Kerala).
I remember talking to the team lead of nurses, who was pretty friendly with me. Pretty much like an elder sister. But she was saying bye and good night to me, and I didn't really understand why.
Turned out it was around the time the shifts of nurses were suppose to change. (There have 3 shifts a day. And each nurse is usually allotted 2 patients, and the allotment is done by the team lead). I asked the team lead if she could assign a Malayali nurse to me for the next shift. She said she would try, and left. (In my sound state, I might have flirty intentions, but back then, I promise I didn't have any intention to flirt. Or any intention at all. I just wanted someone to talk to in Malayalam.) I fell asleep slowly.
The next thing I noticed was a gentle hand on my arm. Opening my eyes, I saw the newly assigned nurse, and I was stuck for a moment. She told me she was there to take blood samples. (In pure Malayalam). I understood everything she said, but I couldn't say a word to her. It was like my brain paused for a moment.
Well, the thing is, I knew her. That too, from bumble. We were a match on bumble, but didn't talk much really. We had connected on instagram though, and I had some slight memory of what her name was. I looked at the name board on her uniform and yes! It matched. I didn't know what to do. Should I tell her I know her? Should I behave as if I don't know her? What would she want to do in such a situation? I had no clue.
But so far, she was pretending pretty natural. No signs of familiarity from her side. Maybe she wants no complications and decided to not show any familiarity. Maybe she didn't really remember? I didn't understand. But I decided to be a "professional patient" and let her be a "professional nurse". I won't speak a word to her out of the necessary.
Well, thats what I thought. It was a long night and a lonely one. It was just her writing some stuff on a table near me most of the time. Too much silence. I broke it and asked her. (In Malayalam). I remember the lines very well. This was the first conversation we ever had.
"Where are you from, in Kerala?" "XYZ" "Ohh, nice. What is there in XYZ? Apart from ABC?" [ABC is something famously related to XYZ] "Hmm... Nothing really. I don't know."
Again silence. I broke it again and asked her:
"You don't want to talk to me?" "Nothing like that. You felt so?" "Yeah! You didn't ask me where I am from." (Now that I think of it, yes. It feels too cringe and borderline creepy. I would never ask these if I were in my full senses. But... back then I did.) "Ohh! Sorry.. I was busy. Where are you from? Tell me." "I am from MNO" "So.. What is there in MNO?"
It kept going. We talked. I don't remember what. I don't remember how long. This was the only conversation I remember before everything turned upside down. I got a seizure and lost my consciousness completely and was moved to the ICU. I had a septic shock and multiple organs were close to failure. I was unconscious for two continuous days. When I woke up, I was speaking nonsense. (I don't remember any of it. Based on what I heard, it was really like how a 1 year old in a 24 year old's body would behave. Can't look at anyone's face. Makes sound, but no words. Tries to move away.)
My mother too came from home to the Delhi and it was all pretty sad. My parents were totally heartbroken and the nurses there cared for my parents as their own relatives. Brought Kerala food prepared from their homes for my parents everyday. Talked to them all the time. A radiologist came to hospital on his off-day to perform a scan for me. A lot of such gestures never expected from people we didn't know a week ago. I was pretty close to death and a priest even spelled the last rites for me. And back in Kerala, my whole village was praying for me.
Around 2 days went like that and slowly, there were signs of progress. I recognised my roommate and called his name. Started identifying everyone. Still not fully in senses though. (I couldn't calculate the time from a clock). But one thing I remembered for certain was, I had a huge crush on that nurse. [Facepalm?] I waited for her shift to come. I would watch her walking in outside my room in ICU the whole time. (There is a common area with nurses and there are rooms around it). And we would talk whenever she is in my room.
I don't know what magic happened, but she became pretty friendly with me. And it was pretty obvious for her that I was not seeing her "as a friend". I told my roommate too about this. (There is more about him. He started talking to another nurse there. Too much to write here though.) He was there the whole time and it was all chill.
I was flirting with her. Shamelessly flirting. (She was smiling on it and luckily I never went to any creepy lines as far as I remember). My mother, being the observant mother she is, didn't need much time to understand what is happening. (My parents and my roommate were allowed to visit me in the room enough.) The nurse's name revealed that she was christian and my mother somehow made sure that she was Catholic too. It was all fun. Everyone were happy.
Days of flirting preceded. A guy in half senses, his crush walking around, and a happy mother watching it all. Those were good times. I remember telling my mother "I like this nurse", while the nurse was listening. She tried to divert the topic but I was shamelessly repeating the same in different words. The nurse was smiling and kinda blushing. My mother later went to her and apologised for my behaviour. The nurse was pretty chill about it though.
In a few days, I was moved out of the ICU to a normal room and the nurse didn't have duty there of course. Still, she used to come visit me in my room every time she came or left the hospital. My parents and friends would be there but they all knew her anyway. There were a lot of visitors. Most of them the hospital staff who were already like family.
I was not allowed to use phone or laptop, but my roommate gladly did the instagram part for me. He found her profile, connected, and started sending the messages I tell him. She was responding happily once I got my phone, we started chatting and calling very often. Yes! She had started missing me. Every time she see my past bed in the ICU, she would miss me. It started growing on her.
I was discharged in a week and once I reached home for rest, we talked a lot on phone, everyday, and when I reached back to delhi after a month of rest, we went on a proper date. She was chill, happy and cool. But no matter how well she dressed for the date, she still looked the best in her nurse uniform when I saw her the first time.
[Later, when I checked my bumble, I realised, the match I thought she was, it was clearly a mistake. She was a different person. The name was also different, just similar. Maybe my memory was playing a trick on me back then. Maybe it was fate.]

2024.04.01 07:52 stlatos Dravidian Words for ‘Nest’

https://www.academia.edu/116921765

The Dravidian words:
*kurṭāmyö > *kurṭāmpyö / *kurṭāmpöy > Tamil kuṭampai / kurampai ‘bird's nest’, Mlm. kurampu ‘nest made by sow before littering’
seem related to a similar set:
Tam. kūṇṭ / kūṭu, Mlm. kūṭu, Btl. gūḍā ‘bird's nest’, Tel. gūḍu ‘nest/cage / niche in wall / sheath’, Pji gūḍa ‘nest / wooden trap’, PG guḍa ‘nest’
The nasals are in a different place, voicing exists, likely from metathesis *kurṭāmyö > *krumṭāyö (with *kr- / *gr- like *tr- / *dr- in *tramiḷa > Skt. dramila / draviḍa / etc.).

It seems impossible that these are unrelated to Indo-Iranian *kurla-āwya- > *ku(r)la-ā[w/m/y]a- :
*kulta-āwya- ‘home of eggs’ > Skt. kulā́ya- ‘nest’, Iran. *kulāwa- > Kurdish kulāw, *ku?āma- > Bal. kuδām, NP kunām

The shift of *w or *v > m is seen in many Indo-Iranian:
Skt. náva- ‘ young / new’, Ti. nam
Skt. náva ‘9’, Dm. noo, A. núu, Kv. nu, Ti. nom, Kh. nóγ ‘new’
G plé(w)ō ‘float/sail’, Rom. plemel ‘float/swim’, Skt. prav- ‘swim’
Skt. lopāśá-s > *lovāśá- \ *lovāyá- > Kh. ḷòw, Dk. láač \ ló(o)i ‘fox’, fem. *lovāyī > *lomhāyī > A. luuméei, Pl. lhooméi

Neither group is regular, but all must be related. Neither set of words can directly give the other. In the spirit of the comparative method, would it be too much to suggest that a third, older, unattested word was the source of both sets? If any of the cognates in IE are accepted, these all would be IE, just an odd compound with odd 2 clusters that each had multiple outcomes. Seeing that changes like *my > *mpy and *-yö > *-öy could exist in Dravidian provide valuable help in reconstructing Proto-Dravidian (if many Cy had the same change, this would be the obvious choice).

The IE sources would be *HoHwyo-m ? ‘egg’ ( < *H2avi-s ‘bird’ in some way) and:

*kurtiH2 > G. kurtía ‘wickerwork shield’, kúrtē ‘fish-basket’, Skt. kuti(:)- ‘hut’, kúla-m ‘crowd / family’, kuṭuŋgaka- ‘hut / cottage’

This is supposedly the source of Uralic *külä > F. kylä ‘village/dwelling’, Mi. kül ‘house’. The multiple outcomes or *-rt- are not regular. In Skt., PIE *l > r is common, but some *r / *l > l with no apparent reason. What’s more, it sometimes matches Iranian languages (when detectable):

L. calvus ‘bald’, Skt. kulvá-, Av. kaurva-, NP kal

Fortunatov’s Law states that dentals became retroflex after *l, then *l disappeared. This fits with Skt. l likely being retroflex, as sometimes preserved in Kh. (Skt. kīlā́la-s \ kīlālá-m ‘sweet drink / biestings? / buttermilk?’, kilāṭa- ‘cheese’, Kh. kiḷàḷ). However, this “law” is not regular, since some VlC > VC, others > V:C, others > VCh, others unclear (Whalen 2023).

Skt. huḍa- ‘ram’, Dk. hʌldin ‘male goat’, ON *galtuz > göltr ‘boar’

*bhals-? > bhaṣá-s ‘barking/baying’, bhāṣa- ‘speech’, Li. balsas ‘voice’

*g^elt- > jaṭhára- ‘stomach’, Go. in-kilþs ‘pregnant’, OE cild, E. child

*kH2ald- = *kxald- > *kaldo- > kaḍa- ‘dumb’, Go. halts ‘*broken > lame’

*kH2ald-? > khaḍ- ‘divide/break’, khaṇḍ- ‘divide/break/destroy’

*g^helH3to- > hárita- ‘yellow(ish) / pale (yellow/red) / green(ish)’, Av. zairita- ‘yellow’
*g^hlH3t(ak)o-m > hāṭaka-m ‘gold’, Go. gulþ, E. gold

*melno- > MIr. mell, Gae. meal ‘hill’, Irish meal ‘sphere/lump/knob/knoll/heap’, Skt. máṇḍa- ‘circle/circularound’

*meldno-? ‘slow’ > Skt. manda-, Kh. malála ‘late’, Ku. mǝlaŋ ‘slowly’, R. medlennyj

*(s)mlhno- > Latvian milna ‘cloth / garment’, Persian *mandō >> G. mandúas ‘woolen cloak’

*krt- ‘cut’? > kaṭú- ‘pungent/bitter’ (if not Drav.)

*kurtiH2 > G. kurtía ‘wickerwork shield’, kúrtē ‘fish-basket’, Skt. kuti(:)- ‘hut’, kúla-m ‘crowd / family’, kuṭuŋgaka- ‘hut/cottage’

*k(a)rstHo- > R. korósta ‘scab’, Skt. kuṣṭha-m ‘leprosy’, kúṣṭha- ‘Costus speciosus’ (-l- in kúla- ‘fruit of the kúṣṭha?’)
*krstHmo-? > Skt. kiṭibha-m ‘kind of exanthema’, kiṭima-m ‘kind of leprosy’
*kHrstmo- > MP xurmā ‘date’

I connect these since eating dates supposedly caused skin rash in Persian belief. See Skt. kharjura- ‘kind of date’, kharjūra- ‘itch(ing)scratching/scab / wild date tree’. This is likely folk ety. connecting 2 words of the same sound from ‘scratch > rash’ and ‘cut / pluck fruit’ (like G. karpós ‘crops/harvest/fruit/produce’, L. carpō ‘pluck/gather’, Li. kerpù ‘cut with shears’). If *karstHo- > R. korósta, these 2 roots with *kar- might come from *kH2ar- (with > *kx- > x- in xurmā ), and *kH2rstmo- > *krstH2mo-, etc. Since many *l > r, some *r > l in Skt., if kúla- is ‘fruit of the kúṣṭha’, it would show the effects of Fortunatov’s Law. Though not fully regular, this would explain loss of *-r- here better than seeing kuṣṭha-m ~ kúṣṭha- as Middle Indic contamination.

2024.03.26 07:45 abodeadobe Why do we make fun of people who don’t know how to speak in English well?

(Long post, TLDR at the end)
While browsing through some Indian gay subs, I found that there is a big group of people who shame people of Grindr (and sometimes other dating platforms) for not knowing English? I’ve seen a similar trend in real life, where my friends also point at some dhaba or Maggi tapri with poor spelling to ridicule it.
“Hehe chokolaat, hehe sendvich, hehe milkshek, hehe botam, hehe sigret, hehe nipal”
Indian dudes (or anyone) shouldn’t be made fun of for bad spelling? Would we be able to spell French/Cantonese/Malay or any foreign language words? NO, cause that is not our first language. Forget foreign language words, many of us have difficulty in spelling Malayalam, Bengali and/or Odia since we are not native speakers. Similarly, these guys on Grindr don’t have a great grasp on English because ENGLISH IS NOT THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE.
India has a count of languages and dialects in hundreds, making much of our population polyglots, who just don’t speak or write in English because they never need to.
I have an American boyfriend who only knows English. My mother has a not-so-good grasp on English. So she speaks to him in very broken and incorrect English, but what matters is what she’s trying to communicate more than how she’s communicating.
My mother also knows 4 languages. And she’s a badass for that. Instead of making fun of people with bad English spelling and grammar, be proud our collective culture has a rich and robust history of linguistics. Be proud to know and learn indigenous languages. (When I was single, and was travelling, I’d often ask guys from different states to teach me their language (or at least some words) and not feel pressurised to speak in any certain language). Cultural appreciation is amazing.
Not knowing English (a language not in primary local use in India) shouldn’t be a point to make fun of someone. That’s immature-inferior behaviour. We are better people. We as LGBTQIA+ individuals want to treat people with acceptance and with love.
Kinda disheartening to see that the 4th community guideline on this sub is that the posts and comments should be in English. I get the point of it since we all know different languages & need a lingua franca, but at the same time I feel it disconnects people from their native languages in LGBT circles, and creates a bubble that LGBT people only speak or need to speak in English (which I strongly oppose). Let’s have more conversations in our native languages, and encourage others to feel comfortable with it.
Cool trivia: Top and bottom are English words, so non-English speakers have to eventually learn them if their own language doesn’t have an equivalent. French say Actif(top) & Passif(bottom).
Sanskrit words for active:Sakreeya & passive:Nishkreeya. Sanskrit words for giver:Datri & receiver:Adatri (I bet our own Indo-Aryan, Dravidian or Sino-Tibetan languages also have replacement words, we just haven’t put effort to know them)
TLDR: Stop making fun of people with bad English, since it is not their first language. Have pride in the rich linguistic diversity in contemporary India. Speak your mother tongue without hesitation and encourage others to do so too!

(Personal Opinion) Kaliyattam outshines any other Shakespeare's movie adaptation in Malayalam till date..
From the Character ergonomics to the frames to the antagonist. This is movie of sublime standards.
I personally don't think, there's any Shakespeare's work that had did justice like Kaliyattam.

Overseas is much better for Kung Fu Panda 4, with a 73-market launch looking to deliver $75M-$80M including China. That worldwide debut at its highest would be $110M through Sunday. The Middle Kingdom, which was a prime territory for the first movie, is looking at $25M-$30M alone. The sequel currently leads presales throughout the frame in the PRC, but remember we are far from the heady days of 2018, when the Kung Fu Panda 4al bowed to $93M+ at historic rates.
According to Forbes, the official budget for Kung Fu Panda 4 is over $274.8 million, making it one of the most expensive MCU films to date.
This comes as a bit of a surprise seeing as how the movie is only rumored to be around 100 minutes in length (however that has not been confirmed as of yet), but the high cost is likely due to the extensive VFX work that will go into bringing it to life.
However, Forbes also reported that Disney received a $55 million subsidy from the United Kingdom government while making the film, bringing the total amount spent on Kung Fu Panda 4 down to around $220 million.
In comparison the the budgets of other MCU films, this $274.8 million mark makes Kung Fu Panda 4 the fourth-expensive movie in the entirety of the MCU. The Greatest Night in Pop came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season’s most durable grossers and one of the year’s few bright spots when it comes to films

There are a few important points to make here: Chemotherapy can still be helpful even when cancer has metastasized (spread to other parts of the body). But its benefits depend on the type and extent of spread, as well as the chemotherapy drugs used. 💊 In general, chemotherapy is more likely to help shrink or slow the growth of metastases if the cancer has only spread to a few spots like the liver or lungs. Widespread metastasis to many organs and bones is harder to treat. Some chemo drugs like platinum and taxanes can help treat many metastatic cancers like lung, breast, prostate, colon etc. Others are more specific to cancer type. Doctors choose drugs accordingly. 👨‍⚕️ Sometimes chemo is given with radiation or surgery to eliminate isolated metastases. Other times the goal is just to slow cancer growth and relieve symptoms. 🤒 While metastatic cancer remains mostly incurable, chemotherapy prolongs survival and improves quality of life in many patients. New therapies are also extending hope. 🙏 It's important to weigh chemo's benefits against side effects, considering factors like cancer location, growth rate, and patient health/goals. More chemo doesn't always help more. So in summary - chemotherapy can still potentially help metastatic cancers, especially if spread is minimal. But benefits are limited with widespread growth. Evaluating each case individually is crucial. 🧐 Related Searches About Movie 🎥 Watch & Download Kung Fu Panda 4 Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Movies Online Free 🍿 Download Kung Fu Panda 4 Full Movie HD Hindi Dubbed Free Online 🎞️ Kung Fu Panda 4: Anushka Shetty Film Free ⭐ Kung Fu Panda 4: Anushka Shetty's Movie HD in Hindi Dubbed Free Online 🎬 Kung Fu Panda 4 Hindi Dubbed FullMovie & Download HD 🎥 Kung Fu Panda 4 FULL MOVIE DOWNLOAD [Hindi-Dubbed] 720p 📽️ Kung Fu Panda 4 [hindi] FullMovie Free Online 🎞️ Kung Fu Panda 4 [SRK] FullMovie Free Online 🍿 Kung Fu Panda 4 FullMovie [hindi] Free Online 🎬 Kung Fu Panda 4 FullMovie 🎥 Kung Fu Panda 4 PeliculaCompleta 🇪🇸 Kung Fu Panda 4 bộ phimđầy_đủ 🇻🇳 Kung Fu Panda 4 หนังเต็ม 🇹🇭 Kung Fu Panda 4 Kokoelokuva 🇫🇮 Kung Fu Panda 4 volledigefilm 🇳🇱 Kung Fu Panda 4 filmcomplet 🇫🇷 Kung Fu Panda 4 helfilm 🇩🇰 Kung Fu Panda 4 całyfilm 🇵🇱 Kung Fu Panda 4 telegram link 🔗 Kung Fu Panda 4 plenafilmo 🎞️ Watch Kung Fu Panda 4 Full Movie Online 📺 Kung Fu Panda 4 Full Movie Streaming Online in HD-720p Video Quality 📽️ Watch Kung Fu Panda 4 Full Movie 🎞️ Watch Kung Fu Panda 4 Full Movie Online 🎥 Watch Kung Fu Panda 4 Full Movie HD 1080p 🎬...

2024.03.17 14:40 DifferentPop345 What do you know about the infamous Suryanelli Case (1996)?

As many of you must be knowing, the infamous Suryanelli Rape Case was one of the most controversial and sensationalized cases in Kerala history. I was not yet born at that time but I've heard that many prominent politicians were involved but the case hasn't reached any conclusion till date. It gave references to many Malayalam poems too. So I just wanted to know about this case, how it unfolded and how the investigation was done as a person who was not present at the time?

2 years back I've watched Malayalam premam and till date can't really find a movie more captivating and more "butterflies-in-stomach"-esque than premam. The entire malar miss track is on mad repeats till date.
If movies have any reccos please suggest. Any language, Any ott stream, Be it Romcom, lovestory, college drama . TIA.
Just to make y"all what my sight of "butterflies in stomach" is: Karthik calling karthik, Love aaj kal (old), premam, krishna and his leela, ok jaanu, hridayam. Dq's Charlie, ZNMD.
