We find reports from every town and city in Italy where Joseph resided. People swore they observed him aloft in Grotella, Assisi, Rome, Naples, Perugia, Osimo, Fossombrone, and Pietrarubbia in churches, convents, and conventinos all over Italy. Wherever he went he created a sensation and left a trail of haunted, aroused seekers who wanted, often desperately, to see, touch, or consult with him. People from all walks of life were affected, some very distinguished like John Casimir Waza, a spiritual son of Joseph who became the King of Poland; the Duke of Brunswick (the employer of Leibniz); and the passionately spiritual Infanta Maria, the Princess of Savoy, in the end rebuffed by Joseph. One surgeon, for instance, reported that while they operated on him, they saw a spectral image of him floating above the table. The extent of eyewitness testimony is pretty astonishing—quoting The Man Who Could Fly:
Crucially, let me underscore: Joseph's case doesn't depend on a few good observations, one or two scenes that so-and-so mentioned, but on thirty-five years of roughly continuous eyewitness testimony. About 150 sworn eyewitness reports have been deposed, according to Parisciani-ordinary men and women, masons, surgeons, artists, popes, cardinals, ambassadors, theolo-gians, inquisitors, dukes, kings, and princesses from all over Italy and parts of Europe The nober cited refers to written testimony; the actual number of witnesses had to have been far greater. Given a public life of thirty-five years, at Mass, at trials, at festivals, on holy days, in his cell, and so on, many hundreds would have witnessed the phenomena, if not thousands. The naturalistic explanations are all utterly absurd. They require hundreds if not thousands of people hallucinating in consistent ways, in total daylight, in groups, for hours on end. The Man Who Could Fly notes:
Arguments suggesting that the effects were due to trickery, expectation, or illusion-inducing circumstances like stage props, or inadequate lighting, or deliberate dupers, have nothing to support them; Joseph's levitations occurred in daylight, suddenly, without warning, all over Italy. The ecstasies and flights occurred often while he was saying Mass in the presence of numerous people. Public life was so disrupted by them that his superiors were often forced to protect him from unruly crowds. Joseph suffered from the public reactions to his involuntary behaviors, and he was completely unable to suppress them. If the levitations were illusions or hallucinations, they were massive, coherent, and persistent- strangely, as realistic as reality itself. It’s really extraordinary just how poor the explanations are. As The Man Who Could Fly furthers:
But to explain the whole mass of reports and claims as pie in the sky, we would have to assume that large numbers of people were having the same illusion, systematically misinterpreting the movements of one friar for thirty-five years, and that all grades of people were swearing in public that they saw things they only imagined. We would have to assume that numerous Church authorities were lying or exaggerating and for some unknown reason hiding and shunting around a completely innocent, nonlevitating friar. One would have to posit an incredible amount of mendacity and stupidity on the part of Rosmi, Nuti, Bernini, Lambertini, and all the processi deposers who recorded their observations.Caleb Jackson furthers:
"The most impressive reports of Joseph's flights, most of which derive firsthand from sworn eyewitness testimony recounted under oath, include but are not limited to the following:
Let us not forget that on more than one occasion, such purported levitations occurred under relatively controlled conditions by which others checked to see if any sign of trickey could be detected. In one account involving the maestro Antonio Cossandri, we read the following:Jackson adduces quite a bit more evidence—his piece is worth reading. If one is committed, as an article of faith, to the idea that miracles don’t happen, then perhaps they can explain it away. But I don’t know how. And such an article of faith should be built on something beyond bare irrational prejudice against supernatural explanations. When hundreds of people report seeing something that’s hard to be mistaken about, that’s very strong evidence that it happened.
"One of his biographers, Roberto Nuti, records the fact that on one occasion during the singing of the canticles it was noticed that Joseph was apparently kneeling in space, although part of his habit [robe] still touched the ground. Wishing to be certain of his complete levitation, one of those present passed his hands beneath him, thus assuring himself that Joseph was completely raised from the ground.""

2023.09.30 14:16 Sakmitshu Aetas Inventionum Dev Diary #4: Map Previews, 3 Italian Mission Trees, and More!
Map of Aetas Inventionum (September 2023) submitted by Sakmitshu to paradoxplaza [link] [comments] Hey! Felis here. If you don’t already know, Aetas Inventionum is both a 1415 start date mod and total province rework akin to (but not!) Beyond Typus, Voltaire’s Nightmare, and the like. We’re not released yet and won’t be for a little while yet but every week the goalpost gets closer. Now, it’s been almost 4 months since the last dev diary and so much has happened since, our main content dev Pleibos works like a factory and it really shows in some numbers I want to take you through before we get to the pretty pictures. Missions are my personal favourite bit of content, I love how they tell the story of a country and so I’m excited to share that we now have… Over 1200 unique missions across 26+ different trees! They range from Morocco to Gelre to the Mamluks to Bavaria and even beyond. With our many new tags and our concerted reassessment of several existing tags, part of the process is the creation of new National Idea sets. With that in mind, I can say that we have… Over 40 new national idea sets for various tags in Aetas! We’ve also taken a deep look at monuments, turning them from a small and selective range of national buildings into a wide array of buildings whose focus is their region and area (rather than national). With this change in scope in mind, we’ve come together and made… Over 160 monuments across Europe, North Africa, and the Near East! Finally on this round of numbers, Pleibos has been working hard in the writer’s room creating a tonne of historical events to help share the journey of history with the player. Be they from missions, hand placed, or random occurrences we’ve got… Over 430 new events to read and deliberate over! Quickly before moving on I want to mention our Discord, which you can find over at https://discord.gg/WqjfwnZt3S! If you want to post suggestions, keep an eye on our regular teasers, or share any good resources (please, anything for the western steppes!!) that’s the place to be. With that now said, buckle up for our most content-dense diary yet and take a look at our latest mapwork by lead dev Math5615 like usual… Image of the Levant in Aetas Inventionum Image of Scandinavia in Aetas Inventionum As you can see, Math’s covered Egypt, the Levant, and Scandinavia since our last dev diary and is currently working on the Pontic Steppe & Caucasus regions. The Egypt-Levant area particularly is absolutely full of several new religions, many new cultures, and even a 70+ large mission tree for the Mamluks (which we aren’t covering today). In fact five tags in these images have mission trees and other targeted content already! Recently our methodology for working on content has changed with focused tackling of a region’s most interesting tags in one batch being encouraged, as opposed to jumping across the map doing many different things. Italy is the first region to benefit from this and it’s resulted in a higher quality, more interconnected set of content that we hope you’ll enjoy reading about: Milan The Duchy of Milan is arguably the most important Italian nation in the leadup to the mod’s start date. The reign of Gian Galleazzo almost led to the unification of Northern Italy and their death’s fallout is reflected in our missions with a diverse tall-oriented mission tree, alongside other events like those surrounding Northern paranoia about Visconti expansion and the Ambrosian Republic. The latter of which is a unique tag in Aetas and the subject of the branching missions in the following: Image of the Milanese Mission Tree As you can see, Milan has received a varied and respectable 41-mission tree in Aetas. They’re primarily condensed to Italy and maintaining a tall powerhouse of a nation. For example, “Early Cradle” guarantees Milan spawns the Renaissance if they invest in their cities early enough, or how “Repair the Murata” bolsters your Alp defences if you stand up to Swiss ambition. You will also be offered multiple opportunities to grow your burgeoning Duchy through less direct means. In “Coup in Bologna” you’re tasked with fulfilling goals using your spy network to eventually coup and vassalise the city - inspired by real Milan interfering and even assassinating Bologna’s podestas for their own ends. Several other missions, such as “Sway Mantua”, “Fall of Siena”, and “Stance on Montferrat”, will reward you for taking a diplomatic approach to your neighbours with bonuses that will perhaps make your neighbours look past your predecessor’s transgressions. However, despite that, there’s more than enough conquest to satisfy the ghost of Gian’s legacy. You’ll eventually be taken right to the boot of Italy, picking up several nice-to-have sub-regional modifiers, to take the title (tag rename) of ‘Totius Italiae’ in “Regnum totius Italiae”. But… you’re not alone on this continent. You can’t trample everyone in your path and so through appeasing the Emperor and neutralising your rivals (*cough* Venice) in the bottom-most branch you can also claim the title (another tag rename) of ‘Lombardy’ with “Request Iron Crown”. It’s up to you to choose what legacy your Milan will be remembered for. As much as I’d like to talk about another path for Milan, the Ambrosian Republic and her tag, that content is still in the oven and won’t be tackled for some time now. So, in the meantime, I want to share some of the events Milan can have: Image of 5 Milanese Events Most of the events here are mission-triggered but the first one, “In the Shadow of a Colossus”, sets the scene for the nation. As mentioned earlier, the previous ruler of the nation was ambitious while his heir - you - is instead prideful and would shake up the status quo for the duchy in ways too much to bear. The other events cover some previously mentioned topic, “Violations of Rights in Bellinoza” is the aforementioned Swiss ambition and will send the player against everyone’s favourite mountaineers. “Regency of Asti”, instead, sets the stage for Milan’s western diplomacy regarding France who will be unwilling to ignore any impositions on their subject’s territory. The “Coup in Bologna” I’ve already gone through. I’d love to tell you about more of our many events for this tag, like the [REDACTED] Wars, but for now all I can impart is some wisdom before we move on: leave Forli alone, seriously. It’s not worth it! Florence Florence, we all know them. The hub of what we now know as the renaissance, a city deeply tied to learning and sciences whose fruits have come to shape the world we know now. This might be the ultimate tall nation in Aetas with a concise tree about Tuscany & Pisa, many monuments, and several mechanics all tied up in a pretty, red package! Image of the Florentine Mission Tree Florence is a little smaller, coming in at 32 missions, but despite its smaller scope it’s full of content and direction. The tree’s main branch kicks off by introducing the player to their nation’s new government mechanic - pictured below this paragraph - in “Consult the Guilds”, which aims to represent the sway that the city guilds had in governance. The player will choose one of three groupings of these guilds and choose a modifier related to them - mind that these guilds aren’t a clear cut ADM/DIP/MIL split so make sure to read the tooltips provided! You’ll earn the mechanic power primarily through Splendor growth. Image of the Priorati delle Arti (Graphics Non-Final, accepting help!) Sticking to the left side of the tree, the rise of the Medici is set in motion with, well, “Rise of the Medici” which is a simple mission in itself about Cosimo. However, it opens up the path to patronising many of the greatest minds of Tuscany and proclaim the “Rinascimento senza Limiti” (not a tag rename). With each of these great minds a ‘great work’ modifier shows up in Florence, acting like ‘Tripitaka Koreana’ added in the last update in that they give great boons but can be stolen if Florence is occupied. The right side of the tree takes you down an alternative path for Florence, that of introspection about the legacy of Pisa which is now in Florence’s hands. At game-start Florence has the city of Porto Pisano in the Tana area of the Azov, “L'Eredità di Pisa” tasks you with taking this city and turning it into a regional hub. Why? To use as a jump off for kicking Genoa’s ass of course! Over the course of this branch you’ll be depriving Genoa of the Black Sea in the “Siege of Kaffa”, reclaiming Pisan ports in North Africa through “Echoes in Bugia”, and ultimately claiming economic hegemony in the western Mediterranean by seizing Genoa itself in “End Genoese Competition”. Outside of this, conquest missions are limited to what can be considered Greater Tuscany. The centre of the tree is then rather mixed, with either side bleeding into it. What it does distinctly offer though is tasks regarding the development of Florence via. several means. Two of the city’s three monuments - a rebalanced Santa Maria del Fiore and the Uffizi - are closely tied to these with rewards or tasks related to them respectively. You’ll also find yourself dabbling in Holy Roman politics in similar ways to Milan. Image of 3 Monuments in Florence Image of the Catastro Reform Event Like any other tag, Florence also has a couple of events. Most are tied to the mission tree but some, like the above, occur randomly if parameters are met. The Catastro Tax was an attempt at raising funds for the state’s use of condottieri which was deeply unpopular, the decision of instating it will be presented to you after 1420. Naples The Ying to Milan’s Yang, Naples is also reeling from their own sudden fall from glory. Ladislas, the previous King, is dead and his sister Jeanne II has failed to centralise, tame the nobles, and fight external pressures thus significantly weakening the kingdom. Even worse, and more presently for a starting player, she cannot produce an heir and the realm hates her consort deeply where it will be up to you to solve this in their new 53 mission tree (including both side of the branching missions). Image of the Angevin-Neapolitan Mission Tree The problem of an heir is integral to how you play Naples because this tree serves not one tag but two - Angevin/French Naples and Trastamara/Neapolitan Naples. These are separate tags which have their own paths of branching missions (as seen above), however I will be focussing on Angevin Naples to leave some unknowns for you all in 1.0. Alongside mission branches, they also have separate flags, ruler namelists, and national ideas while both being fully compatible with all Neapolitan flavour. Images of a Path for an Angevin Heir Above is a collage of the route I took to obtain the Angevin branching missions, however there are three routes to unlock this path as well as two routes to unlock the Trastamara path. As you can see, Naples is first beset by much ado about heirs and this is confounded further when the consort James flees Naples in an unshown event. Some time later the Pope will ask you for monetary help where you can say ‘Yes’ and (currently) not much happens or you can say ‘No’. This will make them VERY angry and declare war on Naples with the support of the de Valois family in Anjou who have claims on the kingdom title. Obviously, you can’t let this slide and so Naples can offer the ultimate deal to Aragon for support in this conflict - to adopt their Alfons de Trastamara as heir and this works… for a time. Alfons will eventually overstep as heir and a Neapolitan player can either keep him with debuffs or pacify Anjou by naming them the heirs of Naples in retaliation to Alfons’ offence. I guess switching sides really is an Italian tradition. In the end of all this, Rene de Valois (technically d’Anjou like Jeanne II) will take the throne once Jeanne dies and you’ll unlock the Angevin-Neapolitan branching missions. Keep in mind this is just one of a couple ways to get a result, like mentioned earlier. Now with all of that out of the way, let’s talk about the missions. Similarly to the Florentine tree, you’ve got one side about expansion and another about tall gameplay (left and right respectively). Starting tall, you’ll be tasked with patronising the cities of the South on multiple occasions which unlock many boons: brand new centres of trade (“Pilgrims in Bari”), buffs to the likelihood of spawning the renaissance (“Spark the Renaissance”), and even the adoption of French musketeer tactics (“Fund Musketeers”). Further down, the problem of relations with the Pope become a subject of concern. With historical relations being quite rocky it’s up to you to decide whether kindness or war suit you, the rewards are branching depending on said route taken and culminate in removing the Papal wart in your territory (Benevento). Anjou will also be the apple of your eye with multiple tasks relating to developing the region. In the left and centre you’ll notice that Angevin Naples has quite the outward focus. The middle branch, starting with “Legacy of the Vespers”, sends you on the path of the old Normans sending you through Palermo, forming the ‘Two Sicilies’, and claiming ports across North Africa to establish mercantile dominance. Meanwhile, to the left, “Control of Corfu” will set in motion a chain that results in the re-proclamation of the Bulgarian Tsars as subjects (“Bulgarian Emperors”), the reformation of the Latin Empire (“Claim Latin Empire” + Decision visible below), and the reclamation of Jerusalem (“Custodian of Jerusalem”). This content is very much inspired by the conquest paths typically given to Anjou as a result of the two-tag system for Naples. Image of the latin Empire Vassal Decision (Byzantium and the Latin Empire are both called Romania in Aetas, this is about the LE only) The missions for Trastamara-led Naples take a diverging route but we’ll be keeping them to ourselves until the mod releases eventually, so you have something to discover for yourself. What’s Next? Phew, that was a lot but there’s still more to come in the future. As I talked about earlier, Math is working on the Pontic Steppe and Caucasia regions of the map currently however, it’s what comes after that’s exciting. Aetas has only Greater Russia, Mesopotamia, and the Steppe up to the Urals left before we’re comfortable moving to advanced playtesting. Keep in mind that while this news is exciting, Math5615 is a real person with obligations outside of this mod and we cannot predict how long things will take. Now, I again want to mention the Discord server (https://discord.gg/WqjfwnZt3S) as we have a cosy community there and regularly (multiple times a week) post teasers about ongoing content. We’re also looking for more volunteers who we’re signposting to join the server and head onto #volunteering. Specifically we’re interested in people who are interested in making religion mechanics and/or religion-related flavour and people who aren’t as afraid of gui/gfx files as we are. If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! See you in another couple months with a slightly smaller diary next time, this was a lot of work 😅! |

With that now said, buckle up for our most content-dense diary yet and take a look at our latest mapwork by lead dev Math5615 like usual… Map of the Levant in Aetas Inventionum Map of Scandinavia in Aetas Inventionum As you can see, Math’s covered Egypt, the Levant, and Scandinavia since our last dev diary and is currently working on the Pontic Steppe & Caucasus regions. Image of Monuments in Florence Image of the Castrato Reform Event Like any other tag, Florence also has a couple of events. |

2023.08.11 05:47 Liljagaren Anyone remember the Adrian Mole diaries?
I was obsessed with these books growing up and vividly remember sitting in front of the TV to watch the latest episode on PBS. I always liked how the author followed the character growing up. submitted by Liljagaren to Xennials [link] [comments] |
