2024.05.18 19:43 exsistence-enjoyer Do you think Christianity can be redeemed?

I would like to hear other people’s opinions, the following is my two cents:
In my opinion if Christianity can become less organized overall, and can attain a certain degree of self awareness, then perhaps something more akin to the early church can be developed, much less controlled and much more ideal to what a benevolent God would want.
But this is large ask, western civilization has been predisposed to organization since its inception and the church has a large history of “groupthink”.
However I believe with the right approach something akin to the early church can be achieved.
Firstly at the individual level, a person has to have a conscious, a certain degree of independence. This will be ideal for confrontation, but don’t just chuck a wrecking ball at there world view, rather let them become self aware on their own as to give them a sense of agency. Expose them to new ideas, LIGHTLY, again nobody likes a walking dictionary.
After this the individual can start to ask themselves the big questions, questions which differ from individual to individual due to personal circumstances. For some people the pain will be an instant, others will have an identity crisis for months. And you must council them, because you led them here.
Now let them build their own worldview, whether it be with old ideas, new ones, or homemade, or even a mixture.

2024.05.17 04:41 Former-Alarm-2977 Help ID an old Unimat lathe and some parts

Hi, I am not a machinist nor do I have any experience with a metal lathe but I have just retired and had this old beauty in my shop for years.
First off, model number? Then a few unknown bits.
The tall pointed thing, upper right corner standing on end.
Then in the little plastic box are 2 small pointed objects - I am guessing they are the tailstock dead center? They must go into the chuck on the tailstock.
Thanks in advance!

Step-By-Step Spanish Hamburger From Scratch
Step-By-Step Spanish Hamburger From Scratch Oh my… this is the best Spanish Hamburger ever! A hamburger with a Spanish twist? Why not! We decided to design a Spanish Hamburger, a tasty burger that combines elements from Spanish cuisine. The main thing is using fresh ingredients. We bought a chuck cut which is cheap and contains enough fat for the burger. After grinding, we added a taste of Spain in the form of olives, capers and smoked paprika. The problem with homemade buns usually is that they cannot hold the weight or the moisture of the contents, and they break easily. While this Spanish Hamburger recipe… See the first comment to a link to the recipe

2024.05.15 13:17 NorseGlas Is there a “lightweight glass lathe”???

I work in a shed, I’m a hermit so I do everything by myself.
I can’t move a 500lb lathe from the curb, down a dirt driveway, and get it in my shed by myself. If I could I would just order a seam lathe and be done with it.
Is there a lightweight option? 250lb??? That could handle 50mil? Or smaller?
I’m about to order the parts to build Kube’s open source lathe because I’m not seeing any better options. That wold only give me a 20mm pass through in the chucks….. there has to be a better option. New or used.

2024.05.14 20:15 SuckitRedditMods Fuddruckers burger & fries to cook at home

Fuddruckers is my favorite restaurant - ever. Their burger & fries were my go-to meal. Unfortunately, the chain has been in a death spiral for the last couple decades, and now the end seems very near. I'm trying to reverse-engineer their burger and fries to cook them myself at home.
Regarding the buns, I don't want to invest the time and effort trying to bake homemade buns, unfortunately there are no stand-alone bakeries in my area that even bake "normal" hamburger buns, and the supermarket-baked buns are undersized and nothing special IMO. So, I'm wondering what commercial buns come the closest to the size and taste of Fuddruckers buns? I haven't done a thorough search of local supermarkets to evaluate all the options, but the best candidate I've stumbled across so far are Bunny Deluxe Buns.
There's a Facebook post from the Fuddruckers in Bahrain that says they use "USDA Choice beef ground fresh". The question then is what cut of USDA Choice beef? Sirloin? Chuck? Round? Some blend?
A guy over at the TopSecretRecipes website claims to have figured out a recipe that Fuddruckers uses for seasoning their burgers, and I have seen several people on various forums (including this one) post that recipe as what they use (or even link to it) for seasoning both the burgers AND fries, and swear they taste just like Fuddruckers. So, it seems like the seasoning aspect of the puzzle has been solved.
As for their fantastic wedge-cut fries, a Fuddruckers manager that knew me as a customer for a decade told me they fry them in Canola oil. I'm pretty sure they cut their own potatoes fresh on site, but the question is whether they just fry them straight from the cutting board the way In-N-Out Burger does (I think their fries are WAY overrated), or are there the kinds of intermediate steps that "do it yourself fries" online recipes recommend, such as soaking them in ice-water to remove starch and/or pre-cooking them (either first frying them at low heat or first par-boiling them in water) before freezing them. I've read that contrary to intuition, fries actually fry better when frozen than fresh - I presume because it lengthens the time it takes to cook the interior, while the exterior gets more crispy in the meantime.

2024.05.14 19:58 SuckitRedditMods Looking for details on Fuddruckers burger & fries to cook at home

There's a Facebook post from the Fuddruckers in Bahrain that says they use "USDA Choice beef ground fresh": https://www.facebook.com/FuddruckersBahrain/photos/a.4356932400998682/4946551925370057 . The question then is what cut of USDA Choice beef? Sirloin? Chuck? Round? Some blend?
This guy claims to have figured out a recipe that Fuddruckers uses for seasoning their burgers: https://topsecretrecipes.com/fuddruckers-hamburger-seasoning-copycat-recipe.html . I have seen several people on various forums post that recipe as what they use (or even link to it) for seasoning both the burgers AND fries, and swear they taste just like Fuddruckers.

2024.05.14 10:38 DesperateEngineer451 3 phase motor replacement, hooked up really badly

So I have a customer who runs a machine shop, the shed only had single phase (230V) but got a rotary phase convertor installed to run everything (a unit that spins a 3 phase motor using a bank of capacitors to generate the 3rd phase, the motor can then feed 3 phase to other motors) (I didn't install this)
It seems to have worked cmvery week for him for years, but one of his big lathes is just too big for it, so he loosens off the belt to let the motor spin up, before tightening the belt to let the chuck spin up.
This guy is in his 70s and is going to get hurt doing this so I really want to sort it out for him.
So, here's the issue: It's a massive motor, it's a 7hp motor that must be 50 years old, it's not far off the size of a 50 gallon barrel. The motor is wired for 400V 3 phase, not 230V 3 phase which the phases generator is producing (there is no option to wire it in delta)
I want to replace it with a motor ran off a VSD, but I'm not sure how big of a motor I actually need. The lathe is way bigger than what he uses it for so even at this massive disadvantage, once it gets spinning its plenty strong enough for him.
Would I be right in saying that if he is only using 230v instead of 400v, the motor is only half as powerful as it should be? So a 3hp replacement should be sufficient? Or is the relation between power & voltage non linear?
And I assume if I put a long ramp up speed on the VSD a smaller motor would have no problem spinning the heavy chuck from a stand still?

Loaded carne asada papá
Made a loaded papa again. This is what I used. Chuck steak with carne asada seasoning, homemade habanero salsa, onion, cilantro, sour cream, guacamole, mozzarella cheese, bacon bits. Large potatoes were baked at 400 degrees for an hour. Poked holes all over them before adding some olive oil and garlic salt then wrapped them in foil.

2024.05.13 05:36 supes99 Sanity check before buying

I'm a beginner to turning and I'm about to buy my first lathe. I took a class at the local woodcraft and really enjoyed it. I am considering the Jet 1221vs. I plan on making small/medium bowls, pens, candlestick, maybe some spindles for a chairback or small table legs. Honestly I'm just looking to get me feet wet.
There are a long list of midi type lathes that fit my needs (Rikon, Nova, etc.) but I feel that between what I have heard about Jet customer service, the 1221vs quality and part availability and also having used Jet tools in the past, it makes sense to get the 1221vs. But I also don't want to buy something that I don't yet need.
So two questions, 1) Does anyone here have any experience with the Jet1221vs that doesn't jive with what I mentioned I'd like to get out of it? Could I get away with something smaller? If so what would you recommend? 2) If I did get the 1221vs, what is a must have besides a chuck, slow speed grinder(with maybe a wolverine), some turning tools, and PPE?
UPDATE: I just bought the Jet 1221. Tonight I'll be getting the rest of my from online. Hopefully I get time to turn it on this weekend.

2024.05.13 02:43 i_see_alive_goats Lathe coolant splash shield ideas

Lathe coolant splash shield ideas
What are your suggestions for containing the splashed coolant on a 1440 sized manual lathe?
The problem with existing solutions I have experienced is that no protection is offered bellow spindle centerline. Your face and upper body is protected but your crotch gets soaked along with the floor.
Even at the slowest flow speed the coolant is slung over the floor. I was recently facing an aluminum pulley on the end of a 24" long shaft and the coolant was being slung centrifugally from the pulley face. The coolant was essential to prevent "built up edge" in the gummy aluminum. in this situation the common chuck guard would do nothing.
I had this same problem when I was using an Hardinge HLV-H with the original sliding shield, I needed to clamp a rubber sheet under the plexiglass guard to catch coolant bellow spindle centerline.
One of the few solutions I have seen address bellow spindle centerline splashing is this company. https://atssafety.com/products/lathe-safety-guards-hinged-guard-machine-mount
This type of splash guard is what I am imagining, it has strips on the bottom. (I have a clone of the same lathe in the photo).
https://preview.redd.it/4tqze2al730d1.jpg?width=754&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77025f7ce096862b6b3700abb9de6e7c40812d85
I do wish their guard could be repositioned along the Lathe's length.
Asking experienced lathe machinists they seem to run dry as much as possible or use a squirt bottle. But when drilling, parting, threading, grooving the flood coolant works so much better for me.
I did not like using a mister, flood coolant works so much better.
What am I missing about using coolant on a lathe? why is almost nobody finding a solution for coolant being slung bellow spindle centerline? Trying to research solutions and the factory supplied guards do not protect bellow centerline.
I am starting to become frustrated and feel like I am the only one noticing this problem. I am willing to spend money to fix this problem, If someone had a $1500 solution that would fix the problem I would buy it.

2024.05.12 19:59 Carter_Atv Found an old walker-turner woodworking lathe as well as an old delta drill press

Found an old walker-turner woodworking lathe as well as an old delta drill press
So we acquired the contents of this shed, which has a Walker-Turner “the driver” wood-working lathe and a Delta 12” drill press. I’ve done some research into them both, but haven’t been able to find much. The lathe is missing some parts, most notably the chuck, which seems to be pretty hard to find, other than that seems mostly intact. The drill press, while being mostly complete, I think has a device to turn it into some kind of mini mill, which is unclear to me how it’s supposed to work. I am wondering if anyone has an idea for where to find parts or information for either of these machines?

Spare rib trimmings
First time spare ribs trimmings
Hey everyone, I bought some spare ribs and did them in the smoker. I trimmed the meat off the bottom along the bones and the chuck on bone in the end and trimmed the side up past the first two cartilage like bones. Then I cut the flap of meat off the back and took the silver skin off. I took the ends and pieces and rubbed them with mustard and dry rub. I then seared them on the grill then played them in a pan with a stick of butter and some homemade BBQ sauce. I put a pellet smoking tube in the grill and let it to cook in the pan for about 2 hours until the reached about 199 F. I then took them off and quick charred them up a little on the grill again. I let them cool a little before picnicking any cartridge and bones out. I did this the day before and just plan on reheating them in the oven. What should I do with the trimmings instead or what could I have done different?

2024.05.10 05:55 Glad-Journalist6754 Hello everyone

I have this old german lathe that i am in the process of restoring, it is going well but there are a few obstacles in the way from making it brand new. When i bought the lathe, it came with a few chucks. it has a lot of runout but i turned with it because i was just starting on my machinist journey but now when i have somewhat of an experience with machining and i decide it wasn’t good enough. I took a piece of 16cm bar stock of steel and i put it in the chuck with 14cm of stick out and i took measurements. The bar closest to the lathe has 0.1mm runout and the bar furthest from the chuck has a whole 0.6mm runout. What do i do.

2024.05.10 05:00 TrueMetalSmiths Different Types of CNC Machining Services

Different Types of CNC Machining Services
One of the most innovative manufacturing options available today is CNC machining services. In a simple definition, it represents a unique engineering process and is popular due to its emphasis on accuracy, precision, and unmatched quality cutting.
If you want to learn more, check this detailed guide on the most popular types of CNC machining Services:

What Does CNC Machining Stand for?

‘CNC’ is a wide-ranging term that defines an array of subtractive manufacturing processes where the material is removed from a stock workpiece or bar to produce a finished part. This computerized process is used in manufacturing where code controls and pre-programmed software dictate the production tools’ movement.
Typically, this stunning process is applied in controlling an extensive collection of machinery. The machinery can include grinders, mills, routers, and lathes. The machining method is particularly effective because it doesn’t necessarily need a human to work on it and performs an accurate cutting process!

What CNC Machining Processes Are Involved?

The CNC machining method utilizes a wide range of technologies that turn, mill, drill, or, in some cases, blend all these techniques. Here are the common types of this remarkable service.

CNC Turning

In simple terms, CNC turning is a distinct process that comprises material bars placed in a chuck and rotated while incorporating a tool into the metal piece to eradicate material until you achieve the shape desired.
Since you get the desired shape through the material removal process, this procedure can also be called subtraction machining.
This process is especially popular for its reliability and affordability hence its common usage for better performance at a minimal cost.

CNC Milling

Ideally, CNC milling is a mechanical but straightforward process that uses a unique rotating tool to cut and remove chips from a workpiece through physical contact. CNC Milling is applied for various functions, such as chamfering, slotting, and threading. This technology produces intricate and complex designs in a single milling center.
CNC milling is a robust process that can be applied to different types of metals like brass, aluminum, and steel, as well as plastics like ABS, POM, HDPE, Nylon, and Polycarbonate, to mention a few.
CNC milling is notably popular due to its unmatched accuracy with tolerance as solid as +/- 0.1 mm. Under this CNC service, you will discover several other sub-types, such as Form Milling, Face Milling, Surface and Profile Milling, and Gear Milling, which usually operate (mill) axially, laterally, or combine the two provisions.

CNC Drilling

Another popular service is CNC drilling. This machining service works in the creation of tubular holes in the workpieces. The CNC drilling method allows for both angular and perpendicular hole drilling.
  • Vertical drilling: This is a simple procedure involving inserting the rotating piece into your material through a standard CNC device.
  • Angular Drilling: Alternatively, the angular drilling process uses specific automated configurations and clamping devices. CNC drilling allows several unique operations, including countersinking, tapping, and reaming.

Multi-Spindle Machining

Finally, this list of CNC machining services includes this remarkably popular cutting process.
Multi-Spindle (CNC-specific) devices comprise multiple spindles positioned in a specified drum.
Ideally, the process starts with the horizontal rotation of the mentioned drum, continually shifting positions, with the ability to perform multiple simultaneous operations. The presence of multiple spindles ensures work is simplified since work is divided among the spindles.
The machining process is a valuable and effective service since it is cheaper and guarantees more efficient than using multiple standard CNC devices.

Top Advantages of Using CNC Machining

CNC Machining Services is a remarkable process, especially for high and medium volume requirements where accuracy and complexity are vital. CNC machining offers many benefits over other CNC services.
While the list of benefits is somewhat diverse and extensive, there are common advantages of using CNC machining, including enhanced finishes, reduced cycle times, and the completion of multiple features simultaneously, instantly improving accuracy and consistency.
Here are some of the most common benefits users can enjoy:
  1. Improved precision and accuracy
  2. Reduced waste material production. This is due to the enhanced precision
  3. Consistency and rigidity in the finished products
  4. Boosts production times. This usually leads to higher & more quality volumes
  5. Minimized operating and labor-associated costs. This is a benefit resulting from the reduced need for manual laborers.

2024.05.09 18:12 BobcatSig Gratitude for this subreddit and some KTM 450 SMR content

Gratitude for this subreddit and some KTM 450 SMR content
FIrst; a bit thank you to the gang here. It's been a big help as leap head-first into supermoto.
As I posted recently, I impulsively bought a new KTM 450 SMR as a way to fill up the garage and as a training tool for track days. I quickly learned that a bit of prep was needed, so I scrambled to kit the bike.
KTM has a crash bung set for the front axle, which was easy. KTM part number: A46009945000
https://preview.redd.it/j52l3zx0efzc1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43c80f51b7b6acc76d70d037adcc62363fdde93a

The rear, not so straightforward. While KTM does not list the rear axle sliders as fitting the 450 SMR, they in fact to fit. You lose the axle hole and the ability to use the paddock stand. Nonetheless, it worked for the first track day. These sliders are listed for the 2023 and '24 450 SX-F KTM part number: A46010945000
https://preview.redd.it/c01v7pl4efzc1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88261f2bfc331c9f2c383c900cf5ccf8a0527d61
Next up were the pegs. I love the new-gen OEM pegs. Unfortunately, the aftermarket doesn't yet have a bolt-on slider like they did for the prior generation. Knowing that a full peg set wouldn't arrive in time for the first go on track, I had to improvise.
https://preview.redd.it/k6eda9abefzc1.jpg?width=4249&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e4fa70d13b9400ef3977dc29cd0af2dd3c191bb
A hole saw, old cutting board, and some safety wire had me good to go in a short period of time.
However, a permanent solution is in order, so a quick call to Superbike Unlimited had the right parts on order in no time. Despite the parts shipping all the way from the east coast to the west coast, I was rather pleased that they not only answered the phone to tell me about inventory, they also answered a handful of questions. That's the kind of service that gets my business.
https://preview.redd.it/bjpbr4fdefzc1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=beb3842cd5ff839924062a3937cd46cf43ceca2d
Shorter and with replaceable sliders makes these pretty trick, and they're adjustable.
The rear axle was a bit more effort. While the KTM PowerParts slider kit worked well, I lost the ability to use the paddock stand and that make moving the bike around a bit of a chore. WIth virtually no readily available information on how to remove the OEM chain adjuster block off the rear axle, I was able to find some dude in Scotland that mentioned this when talking bout his Husky 701 SM. After attempting the removal myself, I found a local machine shop, who were able to get the block off with heat from a cutting torch, chucking the axle in a lathe, and several persuasive blows from a brass drift.
https://preview.redd.it/3y03et8fefzc1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c25a9fc22cf6d0877f77d5d5091593b5056cb9c4
Much better!

Lastly, I needed a catch can for coolant overflow to comply with the local kart and supermoto tracks. Motion Pro sells one, and IMS has a much spendier option, but I was after something a bit more trick. KTM PowerParts to the rescue again. Their coolant overlow tank is listed as only fitting race bikes up to 2022 and enduro bikes up to 2023. However, I don't think the downtube in the frame changed much, as this is where this tank lives, which is super cool. Part number: 79635965044
https://preview.redd.it/f77wk2alefzc1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=278d3cd83143565c2ff13adc5ad2b966839d6639
https://preview.redd.it/gknf8h5mefzc1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d5ea46186ecd04e18e84e2316cdebc773feb432
The install is straightforward. The coolant tank uses existing holes in the frame downtube. It's a tight fit with the holes used up top, but it all comes together and is unobtrusive. I like.
