2024.06.11 07:29 Southh_ [TOMT] [GAME] 2000s PC game creator tool with 2 editions, unicorn and pegasus?

I have a very fond childhood memory of getting this game making tool for PC. It was definitely a boxed game, and I distinctly remember there being atleast 2 editions. I believe they were a unicorn edition and a pegasus edition. I remember this because my brother and I both got our own version.
I can barely remember the "gameplay" but it was definitely 3D. I believe the main difference between the editions was your character, a unicorn or pegasus respectively... I think I remember setting multiple checkpoints for a race? And the unicorn version was a ground race and the pegasus was a flying race I think.
I can't find anything on Google or YouTube, so it's possible that I'm misremembering something.
I really want to see what this foggy memory of what I remember as a kid actually looks like, and am curious if anyone else remembers this...

2024.06.11 07:29 Whole_Journalist2028 Mixing AIs with Mythic

I've been meaning to play a solo adventure using Pathfinder 2e. I checked out Mythic Game Master Emulator 2nd Edition and I like the fate charts system. However, I do not like those moments where I roll to get two words and make up a situation out if it. While campaigns tend to have some element of randomness, as both a self-GM and player, you have some semblance of how the story should go. And the two words system makes it a struggle, since you have to interpret and create a random situation that may stray by a wider margin of expectations from your story. To quote another redditer, that's like "playing chess against yourself"
That's why I figured that AIs are a good solution for this problem. Wich AIs or set of AIs or set of tools would you recommend me? I heard about NovelAI, but it's paid, so that's out of the question for me.
I'm mostly concerned about NPC generation and interaction and battle encounters.

2024.06.11 07:26 wascallywabbit666 Early morning sun waking me up

It's that time of year again, the sun starts to rise at 4 am. Our bedroom is north facing, and when the sun rises it comes in a shallow angle. We have blackout roller blinds within the window frame, but the sun gets through gaps around the edges and lights up the room. For the last two nights I've been waking at 5am. I'm wrecked
I've tried wearing eye masks, but they always slip as I roll around so they're out of place when the sun rises at 4. By that time it's too late, I'm awake.
Has anyone found a way to reliably block sunlight early in the morning? Curtains, blinds, etc all have gaps around the edges, and the angle of light first thing in the morning will come straight through. Is there anything that fits tightly? Or has anyone found 'persianas' (external plastic roller shutters) like they have in Spain?

I recently tried the Benchmade 15600-01 Raghorn knife while on a camping trip, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer. The blade style, drop point, glided through various tasks with ease. Plus, the CPM S30V blade steel is top-notch in terms of durability, making it perfect for my outdoor adventures.
The knife is an impressive 101g, lightweight, yet sturdy. Its overall length of 22cm provides the perfect balance between portability and functionality. The OD Green G10 handles looked great and felt comfortable in my hand, making the knife easy to handle during tough situations.
The sheath, made of Boltaron, was a great addition, keeping the knife secure while not in use. However, one downside I noticed was that the knife seemed to be a bit too lightweight. Despite the impressive features, it felt almost too easy to carry and handle, which made me worried about leaving it on a table or forgetting it somewhere.
Overall, the Benchmade 15600-01 Raghorn knife is a fantastic choice for those who need a lightweight, high-quality knife for their outdoor excursions. Though it was a little lightweight for my taste, the blade's performance and the handle's design more than made up for it.

🔗Classic Japanese Folding Pocket Knife with Brass Handle and Blue Steel Blade

https://preview.redd.it/y16uo4vgnv5d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30f0cd5802156e0fc0f0ef3396978b4bec31b80d
This little Niwaki Blue Steel Higonokami Folding Knife has become a reliable companion on my daily adventures. The unique design harks back to traditional Japanese culture, but it's still efficient for various tasks. The 3-inch Hitachi Blue Steel blade is beautifully hand-forged, exuding an air of artisanship that I really appreciate.
One of my favorite things about this knife is its brass handle. It starts off shiny but over time, it mellows to a beautiful patina. That richness adds character and a hint of the history behind every use. That's something you can't get from a mass-produced item.
However, it is worth mentioning that the knife doesn't have any additional features like a locking mechanism or extras such as a corkscrew or tweezers. It's a no-frills design that's focused on simplicity and efficiency, which might not be for everyone.
But the Niwaki Blue Steel Higonokami Folding Knife has proven to be a great little pocket companion. It's slim, sturdy, and simple - a refreshing change from the gadgets we usually carry around. It holds its edge well and I've used it for everything from opening letters to carving a small piece of wood.
Overall, I've found this knife to be a reliable and aesthetic tool that's perfect for outdoor enthusiasts or anyone seeking a simple yet effective pocket knife. Despite its lack of frills, it's a satisfying tool to own and use.

I recently had the chance to test out the Benchmade 317-1 Weekender pocketknife, and let me tell you, it's quite the handy companion. With its slim profile, I found it easily slipped into my pocket, perfect for spontaneous weekend getaways into nature. The multi-blade design is a game-changer when it comes to versatility - you can switch between blades depending on the task at hand, from whittling to opening cold beverages.
The Benchmade Weekender is a true testament to quality, as it boasts a CPM S30V stainless steel finish and has a hardness rating of 58-60 HRC. To my delight, the Weekender stood up to even the roughest conditions I threw at it without any problems. The brown Micarta handle adds a touch of sophistication and offers a comfortable grip.
Of course, no product is perfect, and the Weekender does have its cons. It may be a bit on the heavier side, but I consider that a trade-off for its durability. Additionally, some may find the 2.3mm open length a bit limiting, but I personally find it adequate enough.
In conclusion, the Benchmade 317-1 Weekender is a fantastic addition to any outdoor adventurer's arsenal. Its sleek design, versatility, and high-quality materials make it a standout among its competitors. Give it a try, and I'm sure you'll find it as indispensable as I do.

🔗Classic Folding Hunter Knife, Compact and Convenient Everyday Carry

https://preview.redd.it/nqkh9rlhnv5d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8883be80d27a13967096b1b1fdbf56d55a7b1af5
Just like the classic Buck Knives, the 55 Folding Hunter is a great addition to any outdoor enthusiast's collection. The compact design and one-hand opening make it perfect for everyday carry, especially when you're on the go and need to dress small game or work on various outdoor tasks.
Even though it's a smaller version of the legendary 110 Folding Hunter, the 55 still packs a punch with its satin finished high carbon stainless steel clip point blade. The American Walnut handle, brass bolsters and liner, and lockback locking mechanism keep it durable and reliable.
However, one downside I've noticed is the difficulty in closing the knife – it's a tad tougher than expected. On the plus side, the slim profile is a significant bonus; it's easy to carry and forget you even have it, making it a great choice for gentlemen who need a reliable and stylish knife for everyday use.

🔗Traditional Folding Hunter Knife with Macassar Ebony Handle

https://preview.redd.it/izrpny1inv5d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58711401d818e87077e1fea1bcd1d7f9834fa6a0
I often find myself reaching for my old trusty Buck Folding Hunter knife when I'm tackling various outdoor projects or camping trips. This durable, time-tested knife boasts a strong locking mechanism that keeps it securely closed when not in use, while also allowing ease of access to the blade when needed. With its classic Macassar Ebony Dymondwood handle, this knife has a stylish yet functional design that never fails to deliver when the situation calls for it.
One of the most notable features of this knife is the smooth opening and closing of the blade. Despite being a foldable knife, it feels secure and solid in my hand, offering me the confidence I need when making precise cuts or tackling more demanding tasks. I also appreciate the high carbon stainless steel clip point blade, which provides exceptional sharpness and long-lasting edge retention.
However, it isn't all sunshine and roses with this knife. One drawback I've encountered is that the packaging for this product can be less than ideal, leading to various issues such as dents and scratches on the knife's housing. I've had to carefully handle and store my Buck Folder Hunter Knife to prevent these issues from occurring, but it's a small price to pay for such a reliable and time-tested tool.
Overall, the Buck Folding Hunter knife has become my go-to tool for a variety of outdoor activities. Though I've encountered the occasional packaging issue, the quality and dependability of the knife itself make it well worth the investment for any enthusiastic outdoorsman.

For my part, I've found the Remington Backwoods Barlow Folder to be quite versatile. It's been a reliable tool in times of need, and it's pretty durable too.
The blade isn't the sharpest, but it does the job well enough. I've had one for quite some time now and I'm still going strong. It's a bit pricey, but for its quality, it's definitely worth the investment.

Just recently, I had the chance to try out the Boker 116942 Prime Barlow EDC in my routine daily tasks. Right off the bat, I was drawn in by its classic Barlow design with the distinctive teardrop shape. The black Canvas Micarta handle felt nice and secure in my hand, while the satin-finished N690 blade just had that perfect edge for my everyday needs.

Although the pocket knife's dimensions may be slightly smaller, it's an eminently capable tool.

I recently had the chance to try out the Bear & Son C137L, a small lockback knife with a mirror finish stainless blade and a gold aluminum handle. In my experience, the C137L was a reliable and stylish addition to my daily life, perfect for small tasks and a versatile companion for outdoor adventures.
What I loved about this pocket knife was its compact closure, allowing me to carry it easily without taking up too much space in my pockets. The mirror finish stainless blade was another highlight; not only did it add an elegant touch to the knife's appearance, but it also performed exceptionally well in various cutting tasks.
However, the handle of the Bear & Son C137L, made of yellow aluminum, didn't quite stand out like I hoped it would. It was comfortable to hold, but the gold-toned color didn't offer the same level of sophistication or contrasting appeal that I was expecting.
Overall, the C137L Small Lockback Gold by Bear & Son is a practical and stylish gentleman's pocket knife, ideal for anyone who values durability, compactness, and a touch of class. While it came with some minor drawbacks, I believe the positives of this knife far outweigh any shortcomings.

🔗Luxurious Rosewood Stockman Pocket Knife

The Bear & Son Rosewood Stockman is a perfect example of craftsmanship and attention to detail. A friend had one of these in his collection and I couldn't resist the opportunity to check it out up close. When he handed it to me, I was immediately drawn to its smoothness. The Rosewood handle is polished so well, it felt like silk under my fingers.
One thing that stood out was the balance and weight. The contoured handle fits nicely in the hand, feeling secure and comfortable to hold. The large size of the knife was also a plus, providing a decent amount of length and thickness to get the job done.
On the downside, while it's an impressive piece, I did find its size a little cumbersome in certain situations. The knife's large build can be a bit unwieldy for specific tasks. The sharpness right out of the box could have been a little better too, but that's pretty common with most knives these days.
This Bear & Son Rosewood Stockman is not just a knife; it's a true piece of art. Its high carbon stainless steel blade and hollow ground feature offer excellent performance. It might take a bit of getting used to in terms of size, but overall, it's a sturdy and reliable tool to have.

Buyer's Guide

Welcome to our buyer's guide for Gentleman's Pocket Knives. This comprehensive section will provide you with essential information to help you make an informed decision when purchasing the perfect pocket knife. We will discuss various features, considerations, and general advice to ensure you get the best value for your money.

Size and Portability

https://preview.redd.it/ly4ae3alnv5d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cababbe47b3cbe3740b42225e4954c61d33cf44
When shopping for a gentleman's pocket knife, consider the size and portability of the knife. Pocket knives come in various sizes, so it is crucial to find one that suits your needs. A smaller pocket knife is more portable and convenient for everyday use, while a larger knife can be more durable and versatile. Be sure to choose a size that is comfortable for you to carry and use.

Type of Blade

Different pocket knives have different types of blades, each designed for specific purposes. Some common types of blades include clip point, drop point, sheepsfoot, and wharncliffe. A clip point blade is ideal for piercing and detailed work, while a drop point blade offers a versatile and all-purpose design. Sheepsfoot blades are great for slicing, and wharncliffe blades are designed for heavy-duty tasks. Determine the type of blade that best suits your needs and preferences.

Blade Construction

The blade construction of a pocket knife is essential for its durability and performance. High-quality pocket knives typically have high-carbon stainless steel blades or other durable materials like Damascus steel. Look for a knife with a full tang or a tang that extends through the handle, ensuring better balance and durability. A well-constructed blade will maintain its edge longer and provide better overall performance.

https://preview.redd.it/p8ypnvtlnv5d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=652c2f5f4ab078c1c2404f753bc0955b83c67859

Handle Material and Design

The handle of a pocket knife is crucial for comfort and grip. Pocket knives come with various handle materials, including wood, bone, resin, and even metal. Wood and bone handles offer a classic look but may not be the most durable option. Resin and metal handles provide better durability and grip. Consider a handle material that suits your taste and preferences while ensuring comfort and a secure grip.

Locking Mechanism

A reliable locking mechanism is essential for a gentleman's pocket knife to ensure safety when not in use. There are three main types of locking mechanisms: slip joint, frame lock, and liner lock. Slip joint knives have two parts that slide against each other to lock the blade in place. Frame locks use a portion of the handle to lock the blade, while liner locks use a metal liner that extends to lock the blade. Choose a pocket knife with a secure and reliable locking mechanism to ensure safety.

Maintenance and Care

https://preview.redd.it/zhpyq32mnv5d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb6e1077ec57ea4965ec98b182e3b9ecc26e5867
Proper maintenance and care are essential to ensure the longevity and performance of your gentleman's pocket knife. Always clean the knife after use to prevent rust and corrosion. Dry the knife thoroughly, then apply a small amount of oil or lubricant to the joints and moving parts. Store your pocket knife in a dry, cool place when not in use to prevent rust and maintain its quality.
Choosing the right gentleman's pocket knife requires careful consideration of various factors, including size, blade type, blade construction, handle material, locking mechanism, and maintenance. By carefully evaluating these aspects, you can find a pocket knife that meets your needs, preferences, and requirements, and ensures you always have the perfect tool at your disposal.

Insightful Message to TBS, DMs and ADMs: How “Carewashing” Alienates Employees
If you cannot access the article, here it is.
TL;DR Summary:
Too many organizations with unsustainable “work hard, play hard” cultures believe that checking the well-being box by offering mindfulness training or yoga classes qualifies them as having a positive and safe culture when, in fact, they’re merely “carewashing.” Like the more familiar term greenwashing, carewashing is derived from whitewashing: covering up or putting a misleading spin on a failure to meet some commitment, stated claim, or standard. At a time when employee well-being has been unequivocally tied to organizational performance and yet workers are historically unhappy, leaders should do everything in their power to provide healthy, motivating workplaces. The authors present four strategies to safeguard against carewashing.
Long version:
Post-pandemic, employees have experienced record-high stress and burnout and are increasingly attracted to organizations with cultures that support well-being at work. A 2024 Gallup survey indicates that the percentage of employees who strongly agree that their organization cares about their overall well-being has plunged from 49% in 2020 to 21% in 2024, while a previous survey found that improving well-being and culture rated much higher than increasing compensation among the things “quiet quitters” would like to change about their work.
At a time when employee well-being has been unequivocally tied to organizational performance and yet workers are historically unhappy, particularly in the wake of the shared trauma of a pandemic, leaders should do everything in their power to provide healthy, motivating workplaces.
Further, organizations that claim to have a caring culture must align rhetoric with reality to avoid both external reputational risk and internal operational hurdles, from innovation stagnation and compromised psychological safety to a negative emotional climate rife with cynicism. If unchecked, this can lead to an environment where those who can leave, leave — and those who remain are disengaged and unmotivated, giving rise to both absenteeism and presenteeism rather than real engagement.
Carewashing as Cultural Misalignment In this article, our focus is on carewashing as a misalignment between what leaders portray as cultures of care (often referencing the organization’s stated values) and employees’ actual daily experiences at work.
Emotions are the invisible drivers of workplace culture — i.e., workplace attitudes, behaviors, norms, and practices. One of the most powerful drivers of motivation is the feeling of relatedness, which exerts a compelling influence on both cognitive patterns and emotional processes. Relatedness involves care for each other’s well-being and gives rise to belonging.
A genuine culture of care is a powerful magnet for top talent, particularly for younger generations. But carewashing, whether it’s used to create a falsely positive brand for the employer or is simply the result of tone-deaf leaders, inevitably leads to erosion of trust in leadership as well as a reduction in employee engagement, job satisfaction, and well-being — and eventually, to employee turnover.
How Carewashing Happens Here are a few reasons for the disconnect between what an organization says it will do and what it actually does regarding workplace culture:
Ill-equipped leaders Inadvertent or even unwitting carewashing occurs when leaders lack the will, skills, or insight to deal with existing organizational culture problems. Some leaders overvalue the optics of harmony in the workplace and may lack self-awareness, underestimating the potentially devastating impact their lack of attention to thorny culture issues can have on their direct reports.
For example, consider a leader who hires a consultant to offer a well-being workshop for their team. The consultant’s mental health recommendations include setting appropriate boundaries between working hours and personal time. During the afternoon workshop, the leader sends out emails with tasks that employees are expected to complete for the next morning. The leader knows they’ll have to do these tasks in the evening, after the workshop, to get them done on time. These requests — again, sent during the workshop — directly violate the consultant’s well-being recommendations, and the mixed messages create stress for the team.
Lack of follow-through Carewashing also happens when leaders, in order to meet immediate hiring and retention challenges, claim to prioritize employee well-being but fail to follow through to ensure that their employees have the skills and resources to bring those commitments to life.
For example, consider a CEO who, as part of their efforts to improve their organization’s hiring profile, insists that HR leaders include language in job descriptions that references a caring, safe, and inclusive culture and touts the organization’s commitment to flexibility. The idea is to attract women candidates, who are more likely to have caregiver roles that limit their ability to spend eight to 10 consecutive hours in the office, five days a week. Unpaid caregiving hours almost tripled between 2020 and 2023, and millennials have now become the largest cohort of caregivers who also work full time — enlarging the pool of candidates who may seek out organizations with flexible policies.
However, while this tactic may improve diversity and hiring metrics in the short term, the new hires may quickly leave if nothing is changed within the organization to ensure managers know how to create psychologically safe environments where team members can ask for support and flexibility when needed.
Self-interest Carewashing can also include ethical fadingand motivated blindness, when self-interest leads to minimizing or overlooking unethical conduct. Organizations and their leaders are sometimes faced with the dilemma of either addressing problem behaviors and risking reputational damage, or shielding their reputation by ignoring or hiding the problem.
Another (and one of the most egregious) forms of carewashing occurs when leaders who pretend to care about employee well-being and safety brush off workplace harassment disclosures and trivialize the harm done. Consider a senior officer who has been publicly celebrated for “making the organization a more caring place.” They seem to care, but when an employee discloses harassment, they use trite phrases like “your well-being is our priority” and offer psychological support “if you need it,” all without explicitly acknowledging any wrongdoing. Even worse is if that feigned concern morphs into intimidation and veiled threats like “we wouldn’t want this to affect your chances of getting promoted.”
Finally, some people seek leadership positions specifically to gain control and power. These individuals often present dark personality traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy) and are skilled at crafting a polished image that they adapt to fit their environment. These toxic individuals can use carewashing as a manipulative impression-management tactic to rise to the top of organizations. They might say all the right things, but their actions will not align with their words, as they only “know the words but not the music” of empathy and emotional intelligence.
How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Carewashing Rather than enabling, tolerating, rewarding, and modeling toxic behaviors that contribute to carewashing, leaders must bravely address the emotional culture, even when it’s messy. Committing to culture work as more than a box-checking exercise requires humility, self-awareness, authenticity, and integrity at all levels of interaction.
To safeguard against carewashing, organizations must foster a resilient culturegrounded in trust, empathy, psychological safety, and integrity. To that end, we have four recommendations:
Be who you say you are Ensure alignment between commitments and capabilities. Select a limited number of care-related commitments you know you can live up to in a specified time frame, and make sure the implementation lives up to the messaging. Be transparent in your care efforts and acknowledge where they fall short.
Ask and be prepared to really listen Learn about the power and payoff of fostering a climate of emotional agencywithin your team and the wider organization. Conduct regular organization-wide assessments that get to the root of the desired culture of caring. Assessments should preserve employee anonymity and use scientifically validated measures to ensure the results are accurate, reliable, credible, and ethical.
Many types of culture assessments are available. Those that get to the heart of how people feel at (and about) work, such as the Emergy Emotional Climate Audit, produce meaningful results that enable organizations to proactively co-create healthy and safe cultures, supporting employee well-being.
Recognize that you may receive news that is hard to hear. As such, it may be necessary to work with senior leaders and HR to safeguard the integrity of assessment results. We’ve seen cases where results were altered because “management needs this to look good,” breeding cynicism from employees who didn’t see their responses or concerns reflected. Commit to sharing your journey of continuous improvement with stakeholders, and involve employees in the process of co-creating a culture of care.
Align leadership criteria with organizational values Organizations that are singularly focused on short-term profits may base their leader selection on competencies such as charisma, extraversion, ability to influence others, goal orientation, ability to make difficult decisions, and high risk tolerance, ignoring positive interpersonal skills. The problem with this profile is that it can correspond to dark personalities.
To create a safe and healthy workplace, organizations should screen for people-based values and competencies (empathy, listening skills, openness to others, caring) and ethical behavior in hiring and promoting; evaluate performance based on criteria that go beyond superficial, short-term results; and implement (in action, not only words) policies and procedures that recognize and address red flags in leader behaviors.
Be self-aware Senior leaders who want to avoid carewashing need the wisdom and humility to admit they don’t have all the answers, be willing to be vulnerable, and display curiosity and a learner mindset. Not acknowledging the impact of the emotional culture on employee productivity is a central feature of carewashing. . . . In a true culture of care, leaders create a well-tuned sense of trust that allows employees to share their struggles, needs, and aspirations in a safe environment. Using unsubstantiated claims of employee well-being as a marketing tool is a quick fix that will have profoundly negative long-term consequences. But mustering the courage to address emotional culture as a shared team reality, where caring is a fact rather than fiction, will help leaders sustainably orchestrate organizations that attract, motivate, and retain the best talent.

2024.06.11 07:13 sadallthetimeagain [1132] Hang Out To Dry

I'm, technically, decently accomplished today. I, after maybe a year or so, have finally started to disassemble my garden shed that blew over in a storm. It's a haven for mice, spiders, and all of the many creatures that inhabit southern Indiana wilderness. It antagonized my sinuses. It was, more or less, a fairly straight-forward breakdown given my history of taking down sheds and ownership of appropriate tools I've acquired. The reason it feels worth bringing up is in the nature of what I feel accomplished about.
As I said, I've torn down a few things much larger and more complicated than this one room 15' x 8'. There's nothing "new" in this for me to learn or feel that hasn't taken days, if not weeks, in the past, and the ongoing frustration of not initially having the things I needed to do it effectively. A good portion of the wood and panels were damaged upon crashing, so even as a salvage operation it's a touch wanting. It had a bunch of stuff inside, some I've moved elsewhere, but some that still needs carting or housing away from the elements. I don't suspect I'll have the desire or energy tomorrow morning to do it before I head to another concert.
This shed tear down is in the middle of what I'll call a "productivity wave." The weather has been brilliant, and I am one to often complain about how not-brilliant or feasible it is to work outside when I'd really like to. So far, I've managed to keep a chain of good happenings going at something of an even-keeled yet respectable pace.
My septic drainage system was not draining. I spent 2 weeks, very slowly and painfully, digging the muddiest of mud and sump pumping until I exposed the ends enough to figure out how to flow again. I weed whacked and dug up/attacked a dozen saplings and what I call "pricker bushes" for 4 hours. I pruned the invasive weeds threatening my driveway, scooped and dumped some rock, burnt some trash, bagged some aluminum, and rearranged some tools and shelves that had also blown over in that storm so long ago.
I've felt my cardio improving with each venture outside. I'm thinking through the projects so I'm not making a dozen ADHD trips in and outside for the scissors to cut the whacking line or reciprocating saw for choice screws that can't be pried. I'm thinking ahead to what will make an earnest approach to future projects a little easier. I've been chugging along the infinite chore list and not letting myself succumb to what feels like a sense of hopelessness that it's not that "engaging" or "the real work" that I'd otherwise like to be doing either through counseling or really any position of genuine service to someone or something I care about.
I mean this in an outsized way, I don't feel like I have much left to prove to myself. I'm convinced. I overwhelmingly tend to say what I mean, attempt to do what I say, and know what I'm capable of. I begrudge some circumstance, then throw on my pants and get back to work. I practice, even when I don't want to, some level of the things that keep me feeling generally okay or contented-enough. What kind of asshole would I be if I didn't utilize a breezy and cloudy day to approach an outdoor project like that? Especially because it didn't cost anything extra, like the fence or wood shop will.
I feel a sense of accomplishment in besting that sense of, "But I don't feel like it." My feelings don't really matter and rarely make that much sense. I understand this so well and so consistently that I routinely respond to them with a course of action that shows them how dumb and wrong they are. I don't think anyone who's been paying attention to my forays on the land for the last few years had any doubts that I could tear down another shed. I do think many would subconsciously root for that "I don't feel like it" sense to take me as it's taken them.
It's a meme, like everything now, to say you want to go off-grid or persuade all your friends to start a farm. It's this anxiety-inducing fantasy about a way to escape the trappings of modern existence. Allie professed to want to create this grand garden I'm pretty sure she's just abandoned entirely. I've heard from a dozen minor associates about their wish to grow things or raise animals or just have the space and time to reconnect with themselves and be more crafty or exploratory in their job pursuits. But, it's only the thought that they feel like engaging in. It doesn't feel right to take sentiments or dreams like that too seriously.
This fundamental disconnect I think speaks to the overwhelming amount of human misery. The, "I'm too tired," "I'm too busy," "I'm too scared," "I'm too dumb," "I'm too poor," "I'm too otherwise engaged in the pageantry of my current existence." We want familiar, predictable, "stable," and yes even stable in the nature of the chaos. We want to chirp our wishful stories like a birdsong, hear yours in return, and then retreat back to our nests for another fierce mastabatory session. Who were you singing to and why even bother?
I pointed out a couple projects that I estimated would take about a day individually, a couple weeks tops if I had the money to do them tomorrow. Some of the projects I pointed out I've managed to incorporate on this productivity train and have proven to fall along my estimations. This means I'm eating up the available occupations of time before I'm back to doing inside stuff. This means I'll be ticking boxes and crossing off lists, so "accomplished" in my little corner, realizing all of the little pieces it takes to maintain the freer nature of my circumstances.
I'm at a stage that's trying to maintain and protect my freedom. From here, it looks very much like freedom isn't what anyone really wants. Absolute freedom is of course madness. Confinement can be worse than death. "Naturally," we find ourselves boxed into the constraints of cultural norms, religious, let's call them suggestions, and our own pathological allegiance and conditioning bred from our familial circumstances. You would do the reasonable or most-desired thing, but your unreasonable parent will protest and then it will "be a whole thing…" on down the explanatory line to what practically manifests as the boundary to your cage.
People cross oceans to be "free." They brave rapey drug cartels and severe weather. People die in the name of being free from tyranny or undue oppression. When it's in-your-face bad, the value and importance of freedom will make you do anything. When it's been massaged into your working memory and language, well, you feel free already, right? That's why you come to so many shows with me.
You can't fix what you're not free to. You can't address something your vision and language aren't tuned to elucidate. We all suffer the consequences of our ignorant and hateful "leadership," and worst instincts of capitalism, and deliberate campaigns of "disinformation." When you're plugged in, it all feels very normal. It is what is. When you work to pull out? You have your most precious time to genuinely engage in a way that modern life makes impossible. I literally feel like a different and fairly helpless person when I'm locked into the middle of my "work" day. "Work" that requires me to sit around and wait, or suffer through a nonsense meeting, or commute for no reason, or fill out paperwork that could have been done 90% faster if anyone who gave a damn updated the system.
That is miserable. That is a series of systems that negligently hate you through neglect. They don't care about your time. They don't care if you die in a car wreck on the commute home. They don't care if you ever get to your favorite vacation spot and enjoy it without a single thought about how your job is nagging you to come back. They don't care if 1% of your farming dream is actually real and what could manifest once you get your hands dirty. They care about the empty song they can sing into the world to signal their virtue and grasp of business as usual. You stay tamed, they stay in control. They feel as little about you as you feel for yourself.
I feel a lot about myself. I feel like a gassed up engine roaring constantly, yearning for a well-built appropriate track to race down. There's fresh tires, a whole crew working together, reasonable rules for the safe execution of shooting a well-oiled machine into the future. I'm a mass of constant kindling, waiting for the big 3 to ever all line up at once. Time, money, and tools, often in the form of another set of hands. I've had a shit ton of time begging me to irresponsibly spend so I can knock out land projects. I can make a shit ton of money provided I give some company 90% of my week and wish to spend 35% of it keeping my cars working and gassed. Often enough it's practically the rule, physical help comes with its own strings.
I said that I don't have much, if anything, to really prove to myself. I have a great many things I'd like to see and experience as a result of what I've already proven or know. I suppose I wonder, do you not see in yourself the same things I see in me? I know I got super caught up on that disparity in what I took for granted about my "friend" group and old roommates. This sucker naively genuinely believed. But I feel like part of me has always believed, or at least been doing the things that make it so it's not a belief system. I'm writing this on the back of another begrudgingly defiant series of actions in spite of my inane feelings. I don't have to believe in myself, I took pictures.
In school, I read the books. With girls, I struck the fuck out ten times for every hook up. I've taken the jobs I considered beyond my skill set and outside my frame of interest or reference. I'm living within the experiment of amassing and building with salvaged materials. I've kept the faith of an entrepreneurial spirit in investing and experimenting with ways to sustain the effort, for years, and in the midst of getting stolen from and constantly lied to. I'm seeing more shows in a month than most people I'll meet will in the next 10 years. I'm officially sworn in as a volunteer for the most uniquely stressful job they don't want to call a job. I'm spending more time with friends and my dad as I wait for work or life obligations to slot into this exceptionally hard-fought and winning picture I would like to make last for as long as I possibly can.
Alone, I know who I am, what I want, just about how I should go about it without sacrificing everything I care about, and what it could be if, oh, I don't know, the people I tend to get closest to don't scream at me, abandon me, or take advantage. I give a lot of credit to anyone who tries and fails. I can't understand not trying at all, giving up when it isn't like absolutely necessary, or failing to recognize and ride when someone has the same potential I feel I crave at this point. I feel like I've been wasted on so many people, but I also don't know how I could have done better or saved myself the grief. Thankfully, I know where I was coming from, even if they maybe never will.

2024.06.11 07:12 Feeling-Ad-2690 Sleep paralysis, shadow figures, and a regrettable yard sale purchase.

Years ago my boyfriend and I both randomly started having sleep paralysis episodes 4-5 nights a week, neither of us had ever experienced them before that. He had the feeling that something was in the room and sometimes that he couldn't breathe, I never did. For some reason with me it was only this overwhelming dread and fear of falling back to sleep. I was awake, I could see the room lit by the TV or nightlight. I could move my eyes but that was it. I could not speak, or scream or reach for my boyfriend to wake me. I would try to will myself to roll off the bed to wake myself but never could. We realized that we both would try to yell for the other to snap us out of it and eventually figured out that although we couldn't speak or yell, we could make this grunting type breath sound that would occasionally work to wake the other so we could help each other out. It always happened to us on the same nights but never at the same time. At the time we were living in a one bedroom so we had a bunk-bed to save space and my son, who was 5 at the time, slept on the top bunk. He started telling us that he would see "shadow people" standing in the room at night. He described them as people who were the shape of Nana and Papa but all dark, no faces. My parents are alive so I took it to mean maybe one was tall and one was short? Idk. It was all so strange. I had no idea that "shadow people" were actually a thing until years later when I heard it on a TV show. My son woke us up crying one night, he told us that one of them pushed his face into his pillow hard that he couldn't breathe. I was clearing out old stuff one day and had a cardboard box of tea cups and other glass decor sitting on the floor about 6 feet away from the ladder on the bunk-bed where my son would climb up. We woke up that night to a "BANG" and him screaming. He was on the floor inches from the box of glass stuff. He was sobbing that something picked him up and threw him off the bed. He couldn't jump from the top, the ceiling was too low, he probably could from the ladder but we'd always wake up when he'd climb down because the whole thing was metal and it would squeak and shake like crazy. After that we started really freaking out because the accumulating events had only started about a month prior and none of it made sense. My boyfriend finally figured it out one day. We had a big plastic 4 shelf unit with tons of board games. Sitting on the top shelf between Clue and Mousetrap was a Ouiji board that I had picked up at a yard sale with a bunch of other board games ABOUT A MONTH EARLIER. I didn't think anything of it at the time, I just bought em all, stuck em on the shelf and forgot all about it. My boyfriend was so pissed. I immediately took it out to the dumpster. After it was gone, neither of us ever had sleep paralysis again and my son never spoke of "shadow people" or had weird stuff happen to him ever again. I never really believed in demons or such things, although I did have a handful of scary, unexplainable things happen to me as kid in the 150 year old house I grew up in. But stuff like Ouiji board never really scared me, although I don't think i ever really used one either. After what happened to us I fully believe that there are "dark" energies or forces or SOMETHING that can attach to things or places, and yeah, a Ouiji board is very cliche for that type of thing....but I'm thinking there's a REASON that it became so cliche, and unfortunately we had to find out the hard way. For the record, the Ouiji board wasn't antique or anything special. It was a Parker Brothers I believe and looked like it was from the 80s or early 90s. It was from a sweet older woman's home who had a bunch of 80s-90s toys in her yard sale. Definitely didn't seem like the home of a Satanist or anything! I can't claim to know if it was a ghost, spirit, demon, or multiple "things". I just know what happened, and that it started after I bought that board into my home and stopped after it was gone. We never used it, I never even opened the box up until the day I threw it out. My scientific mind is still trying to make sense it but deep down I know I never will.

· Compatibility: Ensure that the selected upgrades are compatible with your specific make and model. Some parts are designed for particular vehicles and may not fit or function properly on others.

4. Warranty and Insurance
· Warranty Implications: Check if the performance upgrades will void your vehicle’s warranty. Some modifications can lead to the loss of manufacturer warranties.
· Insurance: Inform your insurance company about the upgrades, as they may affect your coverage and premiums. Some insurers may charge higher rates for modified vehicles.

5. Legal and Regulatory Compliance
· Local Laws: Be aware of local regulations regarding vehicle modifications. Some upgrades may not be street-legal and could result in fines or other penalties.
· Emissions Standards: Ensure that modifications comply with emissions standards in your region. Certain upgrades may affect emissions and make your vehicle non-compliant.

6. Performance Balance
· Balanced Upgrades: Aim for a balanced approach to upgrades. For example, increasing engine power without upgrading the suspension or brakes can lead to an unbalanced and potentially unsafe vehicle.
· Supporting Modifications: Some performance parts require additional modifications to work correctly. For instance, significant power increases might necessitate cooling system upgrades to manage extra heat.

7. Quality and Brand Reputation
· Quality of Parts: Invest in high-quality, reliable parts from reputable manufacturers. Cheaper, lower-quality parts can fail prematurely and cause more harm than good.
· Reviews and Recommendations: Research reviews and seek recommendations from trusted sources or automotive communities to ensure the parts you choose have a good track record.

8. Professional Installation and Tuning
· Expert Installation: Some upgrades require specialised knowledge and tools for proper installation. Consider professional installation to ensure that parts are fitted correctly and safely.
· Tuning: Performance upgrades, especially those involving the engine and powertrain, often require tuning to optimise performance and ensure reliability. Professional tuning can prevent issues like engine knock or poor fuel economy.

9. Impact on Daily Use
· Practicality: Consider how the upgrades will affect daily driving. For example, a very stiff suspension may improve handling on the track but make daily commuting uncomfortable.
· Maintenance: Performance parts may require more frequent maintenance and checks. Be prepared for potential increases in maintenance costs and effort.

10. Resale Value
· Market Appeal: Understand that while some upgrades may enhance resale value, others may limit your vehicle’s market appeal. Modifications that appeal to enthusiasts may not attract general buyers.
· Documentation: Keep detailed records of all upgrades and maintenance to provide potential buyers with complete information about the modifications.

Considering these factors can help you make informed decisions, ensuring that your performance upgrades enhance your vehicle in a way that aligns with your goals, budget, and practical needs.

2024.06.11 06:57 QuotePuzzleheaded638 The new Sky Box apparently won't work if internet is off. Any experience with this, Redditors?

We live in an area with dodgy internet and no short term plan to roll-out fibre here, With our current Sky Box we can still watch TV with our internet down but the guy at Sky told me we're unlikely to have the same with the new Sky Box, which requires constant internet. Just wondering how anyone else in a similar situation re internet, is finding the new Box?

2024.06.11 06:55 sdnnhy Camping platform

Camping platform
I built the trunk portion of it previously for my Pathfinder. Bought an Xterra and needed to modify it to fit as the Xterra trunk is a little shallower, so I also took some time to stabilize, refinish some portions, make it shorter, make it sleepable, and added a faucet that is hooked up to a 12v water pump. I have a shower and sink sprayer attachment as well that hooks up when I need it. It’s not done but my field season started and my vehicle will be away from home for the next several months. I did bring some tools so I can work on it in the forest, haha, but I don’t think I will do much more.
The main thing I want to do is have another slide out extension on the lower pullout where my stove lives. I built the pullout, just need to install. Need to add some latches or something to lock the slide outs shut and possibly at an interval or two as they slide out. I may want to lock them open half way at times. If anyone has any ideas, I’m all ears. I was thinking maybe just some hook and eyebolts in a few places. I might add a sink or basin of some sort but maybe not. Just using the collapsible plastic basin and bucket now. I also want to make the right side of the bottom pullout a drawer of sorts that will store my kitchen items permanently.
Most of this was free wood found on Facebook marketplace. It was pieces of some guy’s workbench. The mattress is an experiment. I bought a full size 3 in mattress topper on Ali express, cut it in half, stacked it, and wrapped it in fleece. I’ll be sleeping on it for the first time tomorrow but it feels super comfy. I do also have a tent but I wanted the option to sleep in my vehicle if I don’t want to pitch.
My main goal for building this was to simplify my camping setup as much as possible while still having a lot of small amenities. I also needed the back seat portion to be easily removed, so I can turn them into seats again when home. I camp about 80-100 days/year for work, sometimes more, so it is well worth it for me to invest in my setup. But I’m also pretty frugal and don’t have a lot of money, so I try to be reasonable or build it when I can. I also hate setting things up and tearing them down even more, so I’m trying to minimize that portion of camping. Anyway, thanks for reading. My purpose for posting is I am curious if others have any cool ideas, suggestions, things to add, modify, or things I could have done better.

New toughbuilt storage.
Been waiting to have a look. Basic range only to start. Cheaper than the red boxes but more expensive than most options. The locking mech is very well designed and they seem stout, but possibly a bit bulky (similar complaints with red team). I don't need another system but if I was planning on dropping a few g on storage I'd consider these. (*non affliated, just use a lot of tools.)

2024.06.11 06:42 Impressive-Baby-1445 Columbia Pt. 1 Dreams

This is Part 1 of a multi part series I'm working on. Hope you guys enjoy it. Part 2 will done soon.
This is based off of true events.
I don’t dream often, but even when I do, I don’t ponder on my dreams. To me, they’re the brain's way of coping with the reality we live in, giving us condensed and digestible images or films to understand the stress we deal with daily. However, there are other times that after having a dream, something happens in the real world that, well to put it plainly, correlates directly with the dream had while in the world of slumber. Those are the dreams I pay attention to. They’re deeper than deja vu, more like a premonition of things to come. I’d be lying if I said this happened to me often, I’m not claiming to be some kind of psychic. But regarding the dream I just had, I remember seemingly important parts as clear as glass. But, just like any dream, there are segments that I can’t recall. It’s what I imagine someone who has just woken up from surgery feels. They’re aware they had surgery but don’t know the details.
The beginning of the dream is clear to me. I was standing, staring blankly at the end of an aisle of a store. It took me a moment to figure out where I was, but after looking down the narrow aisle and seeing that it was lined with toys, I realized I was in a toy store. My blank expression broke into a glee filled smile as I excitedly waltzed down the aisle. From what I gather from this first part of the dream, I’m no older than 7 or 8. My happy expression only intensified when I saw that I was in the train section. I remember loving Thomas The Tank Engine at around this age so I wasted no time exploring the aisle. I probably watched Thomas And The Magic Railroad to a level of exhaustion, and I used to wear a little train conductor outfit everywhere I went, even to bed sometimes. The feeling I had looking through the trains in the aisle is what I suspect an alcoholic feels entering a Liquor Store and browsing the bottles. After what felt like an eternity of getting lost amongst the wooden train engines, track sets and toy tunnels, I finally found something that made all the other toys on the aisle, in my kid mind, feel irrelevant. A rare Special Edition Golden Thomas.
My focus was broken by a voice from the end of the aisle. “That’s pretty cool.” It caught me off guard and I jumped a little. I looked to my right and I saw a little girl, about my age. She was wearing a navy blue dress with a matching hairband holding back her curly dirty blonde hair and her eyes were soft and friendly. “Oh! Hi!” I said nearly in a shout, showcasing that she had scared me. She stifled a giggle at my outburst. I tried to recover and play it cool. “Oh, hi. I didn’t see you there.” I said in a pathetic attempt at coolheadedness. I knew it didn’t work when she giggled again. “My name is Wendy. The train. It's cool.” She said as she laughed. “What?” I said cluelessly. “Oh! Yeah, I’ve wanted it forever. I’ve only seen it in commercials. Even his face is gold. It’s cool because normal Thomas has a gray face.” I said, feeling a little nerdy. “Oh, My name is Chris.” I added quickly. She walked over and stood next to me, turning to face the wall of trains that I was looking at. Now that she was closer to me I could see just how pale her skin was, like she hadn’t seen the sun in years.
“She’s my favorite.“ Wendy said, pointing to a train above the Golden Thomas. It was Lady, the new character from the Magic Railroad. “Yeah, yeah she’s pretty cool.” I said, thinking to myself that the Golden Thomas was way cooler. She replied with a strange response, or at least odd for a six year old, she said, “They just got these this morning when freight came in on the truck. (She sighed deeply) Just in time for the Holiday shopping season. The funny thing is I bet half the associates aren’t even aware they’re in yet. Worse yet I don’t even think they know it’s black friday tomorrow. Nobody, and I mean nobody, pays attention around here.”. I looked at her as though she had spoken to me in Latin. “Huh?” I said confused. I had never heard a kid my age speak like an adult before. But instead of trying to play it off, she just turned to me and said, “I know a really cool place we can go, where we can watch The Magic Railroad.” “Really?! Where?” I said excitedly. She giggled and took me by the hand. “Come on, I'll show you.” We both ran out of the aisle and out of the toy store.
It was then that I realized that we were in a mall and the toy store was just one of many stores. We ran and skipped together down the huge main hallway of the mall with stores with their lights off on either side of us, like they were closed. Somehow it didn’t shock me that we were the only ones there. Like I knew that the mall was closed and I just didn’t care. We ran until we came to the end of the hall where there was a Regal Movie Theater. It was open and the lights were on unlike the other stores but their glow didn’t seem to illuminate that shadowy corner of the mall. The red blue and yellow neon lights surrounding the entrance to the theater reflected off of the mall’s tile flooring that I was walking on however. Sure enough there was a poster advertising the Thomas movie upon entering the theater. I looked around a little, everything seemed so familiar. The dim lighting, the weird carpet with a squiggly pattern all over it, the concession area and the smell of popcorn. I ran over to the candy wrack and just looked over all the different snacks they had. Wendy was standing in my periphery seemingly looking at the snacks too. I spotted a pack of twizzlers and went to grab for it. Sammy suddenly whipped around quickly to face me, almost like she was on a swivel. Her speed shocked me and I was about to laugh it off when I looked up and saw her face. Her brown eyes were now milky, sunken and cold, their warmth having left them. The little remaining color in her face was now gone, leaving it nearly gray and her skin almost seemed like cracked porcelain. Her mouth was gaping open like some rabid animal. Without moving her open mouth, a sound came out of it, like a speaker. In fact now that I think about it, it did sound like an old recording with the background static and grainy audio. She said, “Stealing is bad! Don’t do it, or else! Or else—!” Then it ended like it had been cut off.
I think she could see the fear in my expression because the color in her face returned and her eyes became normal again. She apologized, looking down at her feet, as though she was embarrassed, covering her face with her hands. “I’m sorry.” she said softly, sounding as if she were about to cry. It took a couple seconds but my fear subsided and after a moment of awkward silence, I said timidly, “It-it’s okay.” For some reason I felt bad for her. She didn’t look back up at me and I could tell she was crying now. I didn’t really know what to do but I wanted her to know it was okay. So I went to put my hand on her shoulder. Suddenly, before I could touch her, her whole body twitched dramatically once. I could see her skin was deathly white again and even with her hair obscuring her face, between the gaps in her blonde locks, one milky gray eye pierced my soul. I just stood in utter petrification as she whispered, “You can never leave Neverland.” I was terrified, I didn’t know what to do so I began to slowly back away. Once I had stepped away I was able to see something standing far behind Wendy down the hallway leading to the individual theaters. It was a shadow not Wendy’s shadow, it was someone else’s. Suddenly, Wendy glided out of view silently and without moving a muscle. It was as though she had frozen into a statue and the floor beneath her had become ice. She glided away from me quickly and without losing momentum. She dissolved into the dark corridor with that tall shadow. The last thing I saw of Wendy was her glaring eye before it too disappeared. I was in shock, my kid brain was trying to grasp what was happening but failing. But now I could see the shadow in its fullness. It was the silhouette of a tall skinny woman with thin stringy hair and wearing a tattered nightgown or maybe a dress. I could make out no other details except her eyes. They were open wide and wild, almost glowing white from reflecting the neon lights. She was staring at me, silently watching. At that I sprinted out of the theater. I was too scared to make a sound. I wanted to shout for my mother but I couldn’t bring myself to yell. What if that girl, or whatever she was, heard me? She’d find me again, glide towards me and then… oh God where was my mom?
This is where my memory fails me a little. I don’t know what happened but somehow, after running around for a while, I arrived back in the toy store and at the train aisle. The girl, or anyone else for that matter, was nowhere to be found, I was alone. I stood still catching my breath for a moment when the allure of the Golden Thomas captured me again. I cautiously entered the aisle but once I could see the golden train on the shelf, all apprehension left me. “That girl was crazy.” I thought to myself. “I wasn’t going to steal anything. Why would I steal when I could just ask my mom.” I was a little worried that I couldn't find my mom but I was sure she was around there somewhere. I walked over and I reached out to grab the train. Immediately when my fingers grasped the toy’s box everything around me changed. It was as if I were in a movie and I had just been placed in a new scene. I was leaving the toy store again and entering back into the larger structure of the mall. I was holding someone’s hand and they were pulling me forward, but not enough for it to hurt.
Assuming it to be my mom, I first looked to see if I had the Golden Thomas but there was nothing in my hands. I looked up to ask if my mom had it only to realize that whoever had my hand was not my mother. I only saw a figure dressed in white and black. At first I didn’t know how to react until I saw that this thing wasn’t taking me to a different store. It was, instead, leading me toward a rusted white door with the paint chipping off. I panicked and began to scream. “Mom, help! No! Mom, I don’t know who this is! Help!” But as I cried and struggled the figure only gripped me harder and walked faster. At that moment a sound came from the loudspeakers in the mall, “Or else! Or else—”. It was that girl, Sammy. It repeated like that two times, being cut off at the end. But the third time it finished.“Or else! Or else Captain Hook will get you, Peter. Run Peter !” I was being pulled so hard toward the rusted door now that I thought my arm would dislocate. But no matter how hard I fought back, the black and white figure dragged me closer. My heart felt like it would pound out of my chest and I continued to scream. “Stop! Please, Mom! Somebody help!” From beyond the rusted door I could hear a muffled sound. It became clearer as I was being dragged closer. Carnival music, it was out of tune carnival music, or at least something resembling that. The door swung open and the doorway led only to pitch darkness. From within the darkness I heard the music clearly, it was a haunting rendition of A Pirates Life For Me accompanied by what was either the sound of kids screaming in glee or screaming in terror, it was impossible to distinguish. All effort to escape was hopeless. The stranger, Captain Hook, pulled me in the darkness. The sound of the ghostly music and the children was instantly replaced by the sound of a phone ringing, it was my phone. It jolted me awake and I was freed from the grasp of the nightmare.
I immediately turned over to face my nightstand where my phone was. I grabbed it and was blinded by its brightness. My brain was still fuzzy from sleep so this felt like a flashbang. Through my tired squinted eyes I saw that it was an unknown number and I typically let those go to voicemail. Still as an adult I don’t like talking to strangers. Upset that this person had just interrupted my sleep, as horrifying as my nightmare was, I slammed my thumb down dramatically on the red icon. I placed it back on my nightstand and rolled over. I wasn’t tired anymore, that dream and then my phone was like an instant shot of espresso topped off with adrenaline. I laid there for a little just thinking and mulling over my thoughts, mulling over the dream. Through my blinds I could see that it was morning time so after I had a little more time in bed I decided to get up and start my day. No use in waiting for my alarm. After letting my dog out and getting ready for work I checked my phone and saw that I had indeed been left a voicemail. I told myself that I would listen to it after I got off from work. I put my phone in my pocket, said bye to my pup and left the house.
All day at work I felt off, like there was a growing anxiety within me, in my core. I work at a warehouse and my job is to basically stack pallets of product, wrap the pallet in plastic and get it ready to ship out on a truck. It’s a job that requires some attentiveness. But all day I was spacing out having day dreams almost like I was in an anxious haze, yet I couldn't pinpoint the source of the anxiety. At lunch I sat in the cafeteria on site just staring at my raman. I was hungry but I was too caught up in my own head to want to eat. “You okay there Chris?” My head shot up to see my manager John sitting across the table from me. “You okay man? You don’t look too good.” “Yeah, uh… yeah. I’m fine, I-I just didn’t sleep very well yest- last night, I mean. But I’m fine.” I said, nearly stuttering. I could tell that John knew something was up that I wasn’t telling him by the way he looked at me. “Look, I’m over staffed today, just not enough freight coming in.” John said. “You look like you could use a day, plus it’s Friday. Why don’t you take the rest of the day off.” I was hesitant to accept, I felt guilty leaving. But John didn’t really phrase it as a question, so I obliged.
When I arrived home I was greeted by my dog, a pitbull labrador mut, Dianna. While I usually reciprocate her greeting, I was in such a daze that I didn’t acknowledge her at all. She immediately could tell something was off about me. She even started acting shady towards me, keeping her distance and side eyeing me. I was exhausted and so I just went upstairs to bed. It was strange, as I went up my stairs, I couldn’t help but notice that the darker areas of my house were noticeably more dull. I collapsed onto my bed with my shoes still on and almost instantly fell into a dreamless sleep. I woke up the next day at 6 AM. I had slept for over 12 hours. After that my weekend went fine. Nothing really noteworthy happened to be honest. I mostly just sat around and I at some point wrote down my nightmare in my journal while I watched Friends. On Monday, three days after the incident at work, I was actually leaving work and sitting in my car about to drive out of the parking lot when I remembered the voicemail. I pulled it up on my phone and listened. “Hi, Chris. This is Detective Connor Davidson with the Richland Police Department. Do you remember me? I know it’s been… has it been 3 years already? Damn. Anyway, would you mind calling me back when you get this? I have an update. Thanks.”I was in a little shock. I hadn’t heard Connor’s voice in a long time. Not since I had lived in Richland Washington 3 years prior. Not since all those horrible things happened.
Sitting in my car my mind was reeling after hearing Connor’s voice. I was fixated on the phrase, “I have an update.” Over and over again it repeated in my mind and a lump formed in my throat as I pressed the Return Call icon on my phone. The phone rang twice and then Connor answered. “Detective Davidson.” He said. For a second I didn’t say anything, unsure how to even introduce myself because my brain was so occupied. “Hello?” Connor broke the awkward silence. I finally spat something out. “H-hi Connor, it's Chris. Jackson. You called me a couple days ago. With an update?” Connor’s voice immediately became friendly and full of recognition. “Oh, hey man. How’s it going? It’s been a long time.” “I’m okay.” I said. Connor’s cordialness broke me out of my weird mindset. “It has been a long time. Last we talked it was Officer Davidson I believe. You must like the pay raise.” “Oh yeah, it's great. I can actually afford my car payment and groceries.” We both chuckled. “How do you like being a Detective?” I asked. “It’s pretty great, to be honest. I basically get paid to write reports and eat donuts at the station.” He said, obviously joking. “I bet in a town like Richland, there’s not a whole lot of action.” I said with a laugh. There was silence on his end of the phone after I said that. It seemed I had reminded him of the reason he reached out to me in the first place. “Have you been keeping up on the news here?” I no longer lived in Richland so I hadn’t. “No? What happened?” I asked, but I had a feeling I knew what the news was, praying that I was wrong. Praying that it wasn’t happening again. “We got him.” He said. “We caught James Reese.” I was once again in shock. I was speechless. I was wrong. My fear indeed did revolve around James, but that he had resurged and was killing again, not that he had been caught.
Connor continued as I had nothing to say. “Late last Thursday, a police station in Baker City received an anonymous tip that he was hiding in an abandoned house. They pursued it and, well it turned out to be true. They took him into custody Friday morning.” “Baker City? Like you mean Oregon?” I asked. “Of all places.” Connor replied. “The state agreed to extradite him here, to Benton County, for prosecution. I still didn't know what to say. I just blurted out the first thing that came to my mind. “Why?” I said. “Why?” Connor repeated as to say “what do you mean ‘why?’” “Why are you telling me this, Connor? I don’t want to know this.” Connor sighed sympathetically, almost regretfully. “This case is moving fast. He’s going to appear in court sooner than later. And unfortunately you’re a key witness to what happened, Chris. It’s more likely than not that you're going to be called on to testify when he is brought before the judge. And seeing that I’ve been made lead investigator on the case, I thought I would give you a heads up before an attorney did it first.” Now I understood. “Thanks.” I said dryly. We talked for a little longer, catching up and making pleasantries. After we hung up, I just sat in the silence of my car, contemplating and dreading the fact that I was going to have to dig up memories I had worked hard to bury. The skeletons in my closet had been stirred up.

2024.06.11 06:35 isaac_kelvin Shopify vs WordPress 2024: A Comparative Analysis

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the debate between Shopify and WordPress remains a hot topic among e-commerce enthusiasts and business owners. Both platforms offer robust solutions for building and managing online stores, but their approaches and features cater to different needs. In 2024, choosing the right platform depends on your specific requirements, technical skills, and business goals. Here’s a comprehensive comparison of Shopify and WordPress to help you make an informed decision.

Ease of Use

Shopify is designed with simplicity in mind, making it an ideal choice for beginners and those who prefer a hassle-free setup. Its user-friendly interface allows you to create and launch an online store quickly without any coding knowledge. The platform offers a step-by-step guide to help you through the setup process, and its drag-and-drop builder makes customization straightforward.
WordPress, on the other hand, is a content management system (CMS) that powers a significant portion of the web. While it offers unmatched flexibility and customization options, it has a steeper learning curve. Setting up an e-commerce store with WordPress typically involves installing and configuring plugins like WooCommerce, which can be daunting for users without technical expertise.

Design and Customization

Both platforms offer a wide range of themes and templates. Shopify provides a variety of professionally designed themes that are mobile-responsive and customizable through its intuitive theme editor. However, customization beyond the basic options often requires knowledge of Liquid, Shopify’s templating language.
WordPress excels in customization, offering thousands of themes and plugins to extend the functionality of your site. With WordPress, you have complete control over your site’s appearance and features, and you can modify the underlying code if you have the technical skills. This makes WordPress a preferred choice for developers and those who want a highly personalized website.

E-Commerce Features

Shopify is a dedicated e-commerce platform, providing a comprehensive suite of features out of the box. It includes built-in tools for inventory management, payment processing, shipping, and analytics. Shopify also offers a wide range of apps to enhance your store’s functionality, covering everything from marketing to customer service.
While WordPress itself is not an e-commerce platform, the WooCommerce plugin transforms it into a powerful online store. WooCommerce is highly customizable and integrates seamlessly with WordPress, offering extensive features and a vast ecosystem of extensions. However, achieving the same level of functionality as Shopify often requires multiple plugins, which can complicate the setup and maintenance process.

SEO and Marketing

WordPress has long been favored for its SEO capabilities. The platform allows complete control over your site’s SEO settings and offers a variety of plugins, like Yoast SEO, to optimize your content. WordPress’s flexibility also makes it easy to implement advanced SEO strategies and integrations.
Shopify, while slightly less flexible, has made significant strides in improving its SEO features. The platform includes essential SEO tools and guides users through optimizing their stores. Shopify’s app store also offers numerous SEO and marketing apps to boost your online presence.

Security and Maintenance

Shopify takes care of security and maintenance for you. As a hosted solution, it handles updates, security patches, and backups, ensuring your store is always secure and up to date. This hands-off approach allows you to focus on running your business without worrying about technical details.
In contrast, WordPress requires manual management of updates and security. While plugins like Wordfence can enhance security, the responsibility of maintaining and securing your site falls on you. Regular updates and monitoring are crucial to protect your site from vulnerabilities.

Shopify’s pricing is straightforward, with plans ranging from basic to advanced levels, each offering different features and capabilities. The cost includes hosting, security, and support, providing a clear picture of your monthly expenses.
WordPress itself is free, but building an e-commerce site involves additional costs for hosting, premium themes, plugins, and security measures. While this can sometimes be more affordable than Shopify, the total cost depends on your specific requirements and chosen plugins.
