2024.05.21 18:01 Mr-Dogg 1U Build Transition to mATX Case

Got a lot of information from posts here, so I figured I owed y'all the final product. Pictures of it are in the link, along with a graph of the temperature difference switching CPU coolers made.

A year ago I thought it would be a good idea to build a 1U headless server and it worked for the most part. It was just very loud and temps always hovered at 40° to 50° under very little load. The loudness mostly came from the underpowered power supply at all times, and then the cooler sounded like a jet engine under load.

I decided to move everything to a proper case and an oversized power supply so that things can be ultra-quiet and keep very cool. I ended up with an Asus AP201 case, RM850x power supply, and Noctua NH-D15s cooler. Now, the power supply fan rarely turns on, and the Noctua sits at 20% load the majority of the time.

2024.05.21 17:54 Comfortable-Can-9432 Feet on train seats?

How do people feel about feet on seats on the train?
I always tell people to take their feet down if they have them on seats and I never fail to get abuse for doing so.
I just did it there now to a 40-ish? aged lady on the Dart who was on her phone. I said, “could you take your feet down from the seat?” She looked shocked but took her feet down.
She eventually finished her call as she was getting off at the next stop and turned to me and said, “there is no need to be rude, no one needs that after a long day at work.”
I responded that she was the rude one and she walked away saying, “mind your own business.” This was not a rough type at all, this was a well spoken lady.
Is that what people think? If you see wrong doing (even relatively minor wrong doing) we should just mind our own business?

2024.05.21 17:50 thetokenwon Just turned 40 no degree, only a GED and no idea how to succeed.

I turned 40 this year and skated by the majority of my life doing the bare minimum. I dropped out of high school and got my GED at 19, got my security guard certification and have been doing that for the past 19 or so years with various companies. I have little debt and can manage on a security guards meager salary, but turning 40 it feels like a bell rang for last call to do something besides barely survive. Security is a halfway decent job, but it’s not a career at least it doesn’t feel like it is. I know I wasted my time and should have figured this out much sooner than now I just never much direction in my life. I don’t know what to do I have no technical skills or certifications that qualify me for more than what I’m doing. I’ve spoken to people who work in the trades and the common knowledge I’m getting from them is that it can be a long physically demanding process before a real payoff. I’m not looking for the easy route just that I don’t know if I could handle the physically demanding work at my age. Is it too late for me? Am I gonna be a cautionary tale to get your crap together before it’s too late?

2024.05.21 17:47 sadboykdub989 My daughter has been going to a daycare for 2 years, and has recently been acting very different to say the least... I need some advice...

Hey all,
So my daughter has been doing/acting very odd recently... I am single parent, my baby mama is still in the picture though, so we co-parent very well, and our daughter has got to be the closest thing to an angel that I've ever met. Every other week my daughter goes to her mothers, and due to her work schedule being so hectic, she has to take her to daycare 5 days out of the week.
Apparently, the daycare that she goes to is ran by a lady in her mid to late 30's, possibly early 40's, and is being ran in her house, which truly isn't an issue, I know that many people do that, my aunt included when she did run a daycare. I guess the lady's husband had just recently gotten out of prison, but she sent him divorce papers while in prison, although I don't really know exactly what ever happened regarding the divorce. I don't remember what the crimes were that he committed, but he sat in prison for about a decade, all I know is a few of them were violent, and I am pretty sure one or two involved selling drugs.
I am not sure if he is still in the picture, I don't know if he is at the house while the lady is running the daycare, but all I do know is his daughter has been doing some very very odd things. I am curious if this is at all normal, or if not necessarily "normal", then just curious if anyone elses child has done similar things...
First, I was lying on the bed with my daughter watching movies with her and trying to put her to sleep for a nap. Well, I asked "Are you getting tired Monkey? (that's her little nickname, lol) and she said, "Yes daddy I am" Then yelled out "GOODNIGHT GG" (GG is grandmas nickname), then i say, "Okay hun, give me a hug and smooch goodnight." So I hugged her, kissed her cheek, then turned my face so she could give him a little peck on the cheek.. Well instead of that she went and licked my neck like 2-3 times, the started sucking on my neck, and I jumped up and felt sick to my stomach for a second and said, "Honey what are you doing?! You've never done that before, where did you learn that? We DO NOT do that to people EVER, okay?" and she said "Okay dada" with a sad almost confused face...
Second, my daughter has always had problems getting rashes from her diapers and has to wear very specific ones and has medication that has to be put on her front and back side when she gets her diapers changed... I know that they're very painful and they look very painful, enough pain that she would actually take her pants and diaper off herself instead of saying she "went pee pee or poo poo".. And it's just a very sensitive area, so once we got her the medical cream to put on it really helps a lot... Come to find out this daycare NEVER changes her diapers, not sure if that's a normal thing or not, I'm not the most informed on that stuff, but I would think that they would? Anyways, the other day when I was changing her diaper, I was using the wet wipes to clean everything up, and before putting the diaper on, I started to add the medication... Mind you, this has been going on for months, so she is used to it at this point, but this time I did it she responded VERY different... It used to be painful to the touch and would cry hysterically until it was finished. This last time, she started giggling and laughing and said, "Dada stop you're not supposed to do that!" and I was just taken aback, speechless and I'm thinking about 20 different horrible things.
Also, I forgot to mention... The lady who runs the daycare will have friends over while watching these children, not family, but people that she goes to the bar with, friend groups that she is close to and whatnot, and so far, that's all that I know of in regard to that. Who knows what else this lady has going on in that house. So, I asked a friend what he thought of that, he asked for the lady's husbands/ex-husbands full name so he could look up his charges and whatnot, but I don't know the information. I wanted to see if any crimes that were committed or even past charges were anything to do with CSC or any pedophile shit.
This has been bothering me all week since this stuff started happening, and it REALLY bothers me. I am having lunch with my baby mama to discuss what to do... One thing that we know for sure is she is NEVER going back to that daycare, but she has been going for two years now, it's just very odd that it began happening once the Ladys ex came home from prison.
Anyone have any personal experiences that were similar? Is this something normal?? I've never heard of a child doing this, especially a 2-and-a-half-year-old. I am literally praying that no harm came to my daughter, as would any other parent... I would literally... well I won't even say it, but I would **** someone if they EVER did something to that little angel. I just am looking for some advice, maybe some similar things happening to anyone else, and IF there was something that happened, what steps should be taken? I am thinking that this is worst case scenario, but I really don't want to jump to conclusions and do something that I would regret.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I appreciate any and all feedback!!

2024.05.21 17:45 Glitch_94Chan Question about two door access setup in two spaces

Hey guys, just looking for a little guidance because I can't seem to find a unifi way to do this. I had a single industrial use shop space that worked great with our Unifi setup, one dream machine, cameras, and are about to put in door access. The problem is we also just acquired the space next to us, which is fine wifi wise, since it will be turned into a woodshop. The issue is getting the second door which is about 40 feet away on the door access, the original plan was to run POE to the first door, then make a POE run to the second door, but I have been asked if there is any way to make it wireless. There is no offering from unifi that I can see that would take power, receive wireless from my current AP, and provide POE to the door controller in the other space. We can't drill through the connecting wall because it is a fireproof wall, at least that is what I have been told. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful!

Number of homes for sale is down 34%. “Prices are 11% too high”.

Photo above - Arkansas is one of 5 states with the most overvalued homes, according to the link. Ruth wants you to know her home is NOT for sale . . .
Fox isn't' always the most reliable news source (see link below). I only trust half this article. Fox is probably correct when they claim that there are fewer homes on the market now than 2020 (before the pandemic really got rolling). 34% fewer. That's a lot. It's a statistic that's hard to screw up. There's a reliable electronic trail of home listings and settlements. So far, so good.
I'm less certain about Fox's claim that “home prices are 11% too high”. This sounds like an opinion, rather than a statistical analysis. If you believe in supply and demand, and market forces, then the selling price of homes is accurate. Constrained supply of homes for sale. Continued high demand. Claiming that prices are too high may play to renters's fears, though. Anyway, if you buy into Fox's “prices too high” claim, you could end up with price controls. The same way that “burger flippers are paid too low” resulted in a $20 minimum wage.
This is the two-sided coin of populist politics. Both parties can play. Constantly jacking up minimum wages, which leads to higher prices on food, construction. And getting your front door repainted. How much should THAT cost? $100? $300? It depends on how many phone calls to painters you're willing to make, and how much you want to be dissed for even asking.
Back to home prices. Fox echos the 2024 buzzword “golden handcuffs”. People don't want to put their home up for sale, because nobody wants to replace their current 3% mortgage and buy a replacement home at 7%. Plenty of people who ARENT homeowners seem willing to pay 7% though. They're panicked that the 47% price increase in home prices over the past 3 years means they'll be renters forever, if they don't act soon.
There's also concern that America builds only half as many homes each year (including apartments) as the population growth rate. Keeping the Fed Funds rate high is only making that worse. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is constantly appearing on TV, hinting that rate cuts (and prosperity) are just around the corner. Why sign a construction contract if you think mortgage rates will be WAAAY lower, by the end of March, April, May, August, or September? So far Jerome hasn't delivered on his promises. But those promises HAVE driven the DJIA up to 40,000. Rate cuts move money out of CDs, and into stocks. Warren Buffet just used a lot of his cash hoard to buy billions in new stocks. Does he talk to Jerome Powell on his hotline? Hard to say. But if any private citizen could pull this off, it would be Buffet, no?
This writer has made a BUNCH of bad predictions about interest rates and the 2024 campaign. I expected rates to be lower by now, based on Powell's stand up TV monologues. I expected Kamala Harris to be dumped as Biden's running mate, in favor of a candidate who won't give swing voters the willies if Biden takes a turn for the worse. I expected Trump to be in jail.
Nevertheless, I am expecting lower rates, before election day. Biden is apparently behind in 5 out of 6 swing states. And none of the judges and prosecutors want to speed up the Trump trials and put him away. Trump ran an awful campaign in 2016 and 2020. And he is likely to do so again. Keep him in the race, and hope he stumbles?
No - home prices aren't too high, Fox news. Expectations of a brighter future are too high, based on where we are today.
I'm just sayin' . . .
~Homes are overvalued in most of the US – and the problem is worse in these 5 states (msn.com)~

2024.05.21 17:43 Hatrct Hypothesis on the roots of Hysteria (Freud)

My hypothesis is that Freud's patients, who were mainly wealthy women in arranged marriages, did not find their husbands attractive. Modern life backs this up: as soon as women began to have opportunity to break away from societal restrains surrounding sex, they virtually all display sexual hypergamy: this appears to be a biological fact, which was restrained by virtually every society. It is not a surprise that virtually every society independently came up with rules surrounding sex and curbed female sexual freedom to at least some degree: it must be that these societies recognized the biological sexual hypergamy and the threats it could pose to society. Since radical 4rth wave feminism was implemented in the modern West about a decade ago we have seen how Western civilization has suddenly began its demise. In about 10 years, 1000s of years of civilization have been undone.
Back to Freud's patients: again, they were upper class wealthy women in arranged marriages, and so by virtue of simple statistics, since there are only so many highly attractive men, the majority of these women did not find their husbands attractive, but could not openly talk about this due to societal restrains. This gap caused distress, which then manifested in hysteria. That is why when they were able to do talk therapy and get out their repressed thoughts, their physical symptoms of hysteria were reduced. In addition, it is pretty much a fact that women are much more sensitive to guilt (my hypothesis for this is: as the physically weaker sex, women are more dependent on society for survival, so are more sensitive to acting anti-social, which is what guilt helps stop) than men (and due to the societal restraints they likely felt ashamed for wanting better than their husbands), and so this likely also played a part in creating a disconnect so strong that it caused neurological symptoms.
EDIT:
I had no idea of the cases below when I made this hypothesis. My hypothesis was based on: a) most of his patients were upper class/wealthy women b) most had unexplained neurological/physical symptoms c) sexuality was at least partially a theme in most cases. I combined that with the observed sexual behavior of women I see today, as well as my observed theme of women being much more sensitive of guilt and shame compared to men. But I just skimmed the cases and found some support for my hypothesis:
There were 5 women with case studies. 1 of them (Anna O.) does not appear to fit the pattern of my hypothesis, but she was not mainly treated by Freud, rather, by Breuer. Though it appears that the whole "penis envy" thing largely stemmed from her case. In summary, she appeared to have resentment over her brother, because she was smart but was not given the same academic opportunities due to being a girl. However, I can't seem to find anything about her sexual life.
Number 2: Anna von Lieben (Cäcilie M.)
There seems to be reasonable support for my hypothesis in this case.

According to the above, appears that at 19, shortly prior to marriage, she started to have symptoms, relating to either a sexual experience or fantasy, and she kept it inside and did not tell anyone the details (likely due to shame?).

According to the above, she was wealthy, and at age 21 married a very wealthy older man.
https://www.encyclopedia.com/psychology/dictionaries-thesauruses-pictures-and-press-releases/cacilie-m-case According to the above:
She had an intuition of a future state that led her to remark, "It's a long time since I've been frightened of witches at night," the night before she experienced this fear.
We all know what witches were associated with at that time: sexual promiscuity.
Number 3: Fanny Moser.

According to the above, she was born in a wealthy family, and at age 23, married a wealthy 65 year old. Then when she got older she divorced, and fell in "love" with a much younger man, who robbed her of some of her fortune, and her daughters stopped speaking to her due to her irrational "love" for this much younger man. Again, my hypothesis is that she was not sexually fulfilled by her 40+ year older husband, and she fantasized about more attractive men, and the shame and guilt from this manifested in physical symptoms. Then she couldn't handle it and gave in and went the other extreme and married a much younger more attractive man who was clearly using her for her money. Again, due to protect herself from the shame/guilt from this action of hers, she projected and shifted her blamed at her daughters.
Number 4: Miss Lucy R.

Another wealthy woman, she was in "love" with the man whose chlidren she cared for, and she was in denial about this (again, shame?).
Number 5: Katharina
https://www.pbs.org/youngdrfreud/pages/analysis_fears.htm
According to the above, at the age of 16 she developed symptoms after witnessing her father having sex with her sister, and her father apparently made a pass for her 2 years prior. While this case has nothing to do with her own marriage, a potential hypothesis is that she was a virgin at that time, and at that time a 16 year old female virgin likely had no access to men except her fantasy, and by that age one would be developed enough to have sexual desires. So perhaps she was turned on momentarily when she saw that scene, and this caused moral disgust and shame in her, and this manifested in physical symptoms.

2024.05.21 17:36 HakanTheBeloved I wanted to share my story about the weight problem.

So, maybe some of people seen me here and around in couple of days, I've been mostly giving advice about how to lose weight. Well why that's important to say cause I myself was around 94.6 kg (208 lbs) when I started at the start of the April, Now I weight 83.8 kg (185 lbs) my goal is to aim for like range of the 60 - 70 kg (132 lbs - 154 lbs) to just purely satisfy myself with the body. I know I shouldn't take in my eyes how the other people look like especially on internet but there's no better alternative atm for me. I already started to see some quirky places where my skin just seems to shrink from the fat that I lost mostly on my tights some people could argue that's bad less tights but at my situation it's better to have lose them a bit of fat.
Also for context I'm just 18 turning 19 this year. 177 cm height (~5'10 ft)
So for more interesting stuff what I'd daily from my start with is now around 1.5 months.
Rule 1; Hitting 5 days from week at least 9.0 km of walking with is around 12,000 steps from just this I don't count moving around house for this, but only the one session of going usually for 2 hour walk at least this is how much average I'd have to walk to be around 9,0 km, On the other 2 days I take a bit break from every exercise and I do just 2/3 of regular day with means I'd go for walk but only for like 6 km.
Rule 2 (please don't do that like i'd) I'm just at way to high caloric deficit I mean I'd get like 1,200 + / - 300 kcal per day. Mostly proteins to just keep my muscle mass on my body and kill the fat, but I don't recommend it unless your doctor says you to have that. Is this going trough hell for me? I can't really tell It's kinda like fasting but not really, I already earlier in my life was prepared to have that situation cuase in my house very very rarely there's lack of food or just food that I won't eat cause is too gross for me to put it in my mouth anyways.
What's my costs of this all, I have to refuse some good stuff like cakes, some other sugar staff, etc. After that time I pretty much don't have any feeling of having to eat or use sugar stuff, so I just drink water and cup of drink tea daily.
The pain in the ass; I'm just still a student and my money outcome is pretty not existing so I have to rely what I get in my kitchen from parents and that's usually not the best staff but at least it's not heavy processed meals like average US dinner. Well at least when I get some money the chicken breast aren't that expensive to get + full-wheat penne pasta + tomato sauce makes me dinner for a week to eat, so I still somewhat stay alive, I did started to appreciate more the meal that I get, and stopped pretty much every time my heads tells me "You are Hungry" I just go and drink water and then this annoying stuff stops for another 6 hours.
Yes I'd have skincare routine mostly just cleanser -> oat lotion -> moisturizer and if I'm going outside in summer time I use uv cream, and yes most of this stuff I just took from my other cause women cosmetics are somewhat always better than mens.
So what other exercises I'd daily; Well I usually got for 3 x 20, So I'd sit ups, squats, glute bridges, russian twists and 1 min of plank, and yes the push ups why do I'd them to help my upper part of body gain some muscles so I get rid of this gross some type of men boobs that I got cause of the fat in my body. Also I'd then set of 2 exercises 3x for 30 s that just helps me with core muscles.
If I get bored from one exercise I'd go and do other with similar meaning like; side leg rises, hydrant etc.
So to summary; Is this what I'd healthy at all, I wouldn't say it's that much healthy and wouldn't recommend going on same caloric deficit as me unless told by doctor, but the other habits like exercises they should be optimal for most of people out here. And general advice for everyone do push ups they don't hurt and not doing like 100 per day but going for like 20 - 40 should be great. I plan myself to reduce amount of them after next month.
If anybody would have any question about other stuff or their personal story to share I'll be open to hear it out when I find a piece of time!
See ya, for the time that I get my silly ass back here.
ps; Stay hydrated cause it's summer duh.

2024.05.21 17:34 UmdAvatarFan Joel Embiid is known to be a bad playoff performer but who are some HOF bound or current HOF legitimately worse the him?

Joel Embiid playoff stats don’t look took bad if you just look at the stats sheet.
He gets to the line and has playoff true shooting percentage of 58 percent.
His defense actually takes a step up in the playoffs and he’s very impactful in rim protection in majority of the time.
Of course if you just watch his second round playoff series the dude chokes each and every single time. While flopping and hurting other players. He’s bad/mediocre in the second round no ifs or buts.
For my answer I’ll go with Russel Westbrook.
In 13 post season runs he’s shot less than 40 percent from the field in 6 of them which is almost half.
From 2015-2020. Westbrook prime he averaged 4.6 turnovers a game and I believe he had the highest turnover average those post season runs.
In the finals he took more shots than both Lebron and KD despite being way less efficient then the both of them. 50(ts)
All in all he’s not someone I want as my number one or frankly a 2 in the playoffs. He’s less efficient than Embiid in the playoffs(especially since 2017 embiid rookie year), notably worse than Embiid on defense, turns the ball more often, and while Embiid hasn’t made it past the second round in his career.
Since Embiid rookie season Russ has made it past the first round once.

2024.05.21 17:32 redracoon03 Naptime Diapering at Daycare and Overnight Diapers (3 years old)

Hi everyone! This is my first post to this sub, so forgive me if it is misplaced or missing appropriate context.
My daughter turned 3 a few weeks ago and is in daycare. It is also important to know that she was (what we thought to be) successfully potty trained within the past six months, and we just recently moved into a new home about 40 minutes away from where we lived previously, resulting in a shift in our routines to accommodate a longer commute to and from daycare. Before our move, she had maybe one accident a week and was great about listening to her body and using the potty.
In the past few weeks since we moved into our new house, our daughter has been coming home from daycare more often than not with soiled clothes and sheets. We attributed this to the disruption of our usual routine and the shock of the change from our move, however after a discussion with one of her teachers this morning at drop-off, there seems there may be more to the increase in "accidents".
Her teacher stopped me to ask if we are putting her in an overnight diaper at home, to which I responded "Yes, of course". She let me know, "That may be what is holding her back -- they won't put her in a diaper at naptime in her next class." And then it clicked -- they haven't been putting her in a diaper at naptime in her current class in preparation for her upcoming transition to the next class in August (we were notified of the upcoming transition right around the same time we moved into our new home). I didn't say anything other than, "Oh, okay. We can work on that" at the time, but now that I've had more time to process this, I am honestly infuriated. She just turned three and is newly potty trained -- to me, it would seem intuitive that she is not ready or is not yet capable of holding her bladder while she sleeps, yet her teachers seem to be trying to force her into meeting milestones on their timeline to accommodate their need to push children through classrooms to make room for the next students. I mean, a quick Google search indicated that children start holding their bladder when sleeping around 4-5 years old...
All this to say, am I justified in being so upset, or is the forced change of sleeping without a diaper developmentally appropriate for a newly three-year-old child? I wanted to crowdsource some opinions from other moms before I request to speak with the daycare director and her teachers; the outside insight is welcomed and much appreciated!

2024.05.21 17:30 GlitteringRanger2259 Feeling like a helicopter parent and looking for some advice.

I want to preface this by noting that this is a ramble. I have a lot of thoughts, this is probably too many unnecessary details but at this point that’s one of the things Im struggling with as a (SAH) parent of a little with T1D.
So my daughter was diagnosed June of last year when she was still 3. It’s been a crazy journey, and while I’m grateful we haven’t had to deal with any life threatening incidences since her first DKA and diagnosis I can’t help but worry about her sugar all day, every day.
She’s on MDI, we’re doing a pump class next month (a requirement before her endo will approve), just recently changed her long acting and was seeing improvement in her glucose—but now it feels like we’re back to the beginning somehow?
She’s had so many days where she’s above 200. When I looked at her libre 3 ‘time in ranges,’ she was for the longest only ‘in range’ 38% of the time, any other time was way above. However, a few weeks ago (around the beginning of the month) I played around with her breakfast ratio and it seemed as if I found the ratio that REALLY worked for her—and then two days later she had her endo appointment and they changed her long acting because her sugar was going over 350 3-4 hours after eating lunch. For the first two weeks of this month she went from being in range 38% of the time to 67% of the time! It was so… great? But for the last week, she’s been pushing back into the 300s.
Now, one of the things that makes me feel like a helicopter parent: since she’s only 4 (5 in July ), I prefer to check her sugar myself and do all of her injections myself—one of the reasons being that I’ve noticed during this year that when my husband does her injections her glucose levels are even worse (there was one incident —early weeks of diagnosis— where he didn’t even inject her, the medicine literally sat on her skin and she was about to eat). Recently my little one tried to (very quickly) help me set up her needle and she bent the needle that goes into the pen (unbeknownst to me), and I tried to prime it like 3 times and I thought the pen broke. When i went to disassemble it to toss it was when I noticed the bent needle. Tried again with new one, went to prime and sooo much insulin came out, like there was so much pressure. It was an extremely stressful morning, and I no longer wanted her to help me get her medicine ready.
She knows how to check her sugar, but when it comes to cleaning her finger really well, she does not do a good job and I go behind her and recheck when the number from her test comes back 40+ different from her CGM.
Since she has a libre 3, her cgm is connected to my phone. We have a reader, have not yet used it because my phone stays in her room over night to be within range of her while I have it also connected to my iPad. When she goes low, she doesn’t wake up with the device blaring right next to her—but the notifications coming to my iPad inform me to check her.
I’m at a point where I’m…lost. She doesn’t seem to fully grasp certain parts of this journey? Should I make her check herself throughout the day until she gets the hang of that first? When should I let her give herself medicine (this part scares the ever loving life out of me because I’m terrified she’ll over do it and not want to drink/eat something to fix it because she’s full or something)?
And since she’s turning 5, she ought to be going to school in autumn—but I’m so unbelievably terrified because we live in a small town and it feels like so many people are ignorant to type 1 and assume it’s type 2. I plan to homeschool, but with her attention span I know it’s going to be difficult. But teachers mindlessly hand out candy, and while not everyone has diabetes, I know it’s going to be another crap experience for her because she was dealt a shitty hand. I even struggle with the judgment when we’re at the store trying to check out and she throws a fit for one of those gourmet lollipops that don’t have the carbs listed on it and there’s no guarantee she’s even going to finish it. When I say no, people just look at me like “what a bad mom, let that baby have a lollipop.”
I don’t restrict her diet. If she wants a piece of chocolate or cookie, or whatever: she can have it— if it’s more than 5carbs, I make her understand she has to have medicine for it. She’s a kid. She loves carbs, all the bread, noodles, desserts—I’m trying to do everything right for her.
She’s a kid, she should have all those experiences and privileges allotted to kids—but how am I to navigated this without dictating every single moment of her life?
If you got this far, I’m sorry for the rambling and thank you.

2024.05.21 17:22 Feisty_Principle431 If promoting your music makes you miserable, read this

[To view the original post, click here]
If you’re a musician, then you’re a spiritual person.
You may call yourself an atheist…. or an agnostic…. or Frank, whatever you prefer.
But you’re a spiritual person nonetheless.
Because according to the definition that I just made up in my head as I typed this, spirituality is anything that aspires towards the truth.
Now, you may say this isn’t your goal. You may even be openly running away from problems in your own life. You may even believe that life is inherently meaningless or absurd.
But in music, I am certain you are seeking the truth.
Even you, my jaded friends, the very fact that you’re reading this post is because somewhere in you……….the ember of belief still burns.****
(***Just a heads up, if you aren’t resonating at this point, this will be a very uncomfortable read for you…)
“Now Michael, how do you know I’m seeking the truth? You’re just a man I don’t really know very well…”
I know because I feel the exact same way when I make music.
But the moment the recording light on my phone starts blinking (is that a thing?), whatever truth I aspire towards slips through my fingers.***
(****For those not picking up on this vibe, really appreciate you giving it a shot but this Substack is probably just gonna be more of this… so thanks for coming out!)
--------------------------------------------------------
The other day, I tried to film a YouTube video.
I was gonna talk about music business news and give my thoughts, and in my head, it was beautiful.
I was funny but serious. Authoritative, but also kinda in on the joke. Post-ironic and good spirited.
Me and Preston (who lived in the podcast studio for a brief period of time to get this label off the ground🫡) set up the cameras and got the set looking nice.
I was going to talk about the Universal Music and TikTok dispute. I had some hot takes I wanted to share, and I was ready to spit some facts.
I figured a series talking about music business would be a cool way to align my interest in business with my passion for music. Our parent company (long live the mothership, Mastering.com ⚔️) has a large following on YouTube, so they offered to help me launch the new series.
Preston (🫡 ) printed the earnings reports and had them on my sick looking executive desk (actually $40 on FB marketplace). I even bought those swinging clackers (or Newton’s cradle for chumps) to make my desk look extra slick.
I turned to Preston, and said “let’s rock and roll” or something like that.
Preston hit RECORD.
I took off at a casual but lively gate. I hit a well timed planned joke early and I was hand-gesturing at a steady clip.
I had prepared what I would say a few times in my head… but pretty quickly I started having a hard time stitching the ideas together.
A stumble, a recovery…….. a joke, a nervous laugh! ….a thought about the nervous laugh, a thought about the thought about the nervous laugh….blank…..blank……. darkness……
And before I knew it, whatever truth I was about to bear down on the world evaporated above me.
After about 5 minutes, like a car steaming from the hood, I pulled the show over to the side of the road and shut her down.
I turned to Preston (🫡) and said “oh my gosh this is boring as sh**”.
I was like Walter Cronkite without the believability, charm, or dashing good looks… I had all the pizzaz of an (unsalted) Saltine cracker.
Anyways it was very bad, and I knew it.
And not in the self-pity way… it just clearly wasn’t my thing. I have an interview podcast which felt pretty natural from Day 1, but for some reason when I’m talking to the camera I couldn’t relax.
I knew it would be very bad for a while until I improved.
Now…. I believed I could get good at it if I just put in the time and the effort. But “being good on camera” was never something I wanted to get good at.
I just wanted to be myself and share (what I hoped) was the truth.
I turned to Preston (🫡 )and I said:
“This was a failure, I must go home now.”
A man of my word, I went home and I told my wife what happened, to which she replied:
“yeah I could’ve told you that you would’ve hated filming a YouTube video.”
She was right. She’s always right. And I mean that sincerely.
--------------------------------------------------------
After the sharp sting of a failure wore off, I re-examined how I could promote Mad Records in a way that aligned my interest in business with my passion for music (my original goal with the YouTube video.)
And that night, I started this Substack.
I talked about the UMG / TikTok dispute, and it felt really natural. I was able to write freely, make edits, take breaks, and strive for the truth. I even got to hang out with my sweet 12-year old Maltese queen, Katie, while I wrote it. What a joy.
(You can check out that post here after you finish this!)
And unlike my crushed YouTube aspirations, my article turned out pretty ok - which was a good enough starting point for me.
SO WHAT’S THE POINT?
If you feel like your “content” isn’t capturing the deep, spiritual truth you’re aspiring for with your music, then you have two options:
  1. Give yourself the time to improve. Be patient and expect no results in the meantime. If results happen, then congrats, you’re now good at that thing.
  2. Give yourself grace for falling short of your vision, and find a different medium/method that captures it. Nurse your wounds with people who understand what you’re trying to accomplish.
There is always a way to share your creative vision in a way that aligns with your values.
You just have to build up a pain tolerance for failing publicly.
However, for the love of all things holy, please subscribe to this SubStack…. I can’t fail again I have plans this weekend.)
Long Live Mad Records ⚔️

2024.05.21 17:15 Butt_stuff_preferred What's the craziest reason someone was fired or got in trouble?

Mine would have to be pre-merger Raytheon. We had a CM/DM person on a program who had been medically approved WFH. We never saw them, ever, for about two years. Somehow they were getting some work done but another person in their functional or on the program must have been covering because eventually they were being left off of meetings, tag ups, and program slides. We'd just have a "?" on slides for that role.
After a couple years we got a new deputy PM who was a younger girl and full of spirit. She was in charge of CDRLs and well, we found out who was covering. She brought it up to the functional/SL and an investigation started.
Turns out they had at least two jobs, was traveling on the company card "for the program" to different states with nice beaches, and of course was billing a full 40 hours to our program while doing very little actual work. They were fired and I think Raytheon sued to get money back for the trips and time card fraud.
Word is they kept the other job and still works from home to this day.

2024.05.21 16:57 Shagrrotten The Greatest Car Chases in Movie History, Ranked

Taken from: https://www.theringer.com/movies/2024/5/21/24161120/greatest-movie-car-chase-scenes-ranked-furiosa-mad-max-saga
In honor of the imminent ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ we’re shifting into high gear to determine the best chase scene in cinema history
By Miles Surrey May 21, 2024, 6:30am EDTGetty Images/Ringer illustration
After wowing audiences with Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller returns to the franchise’s post-apocalyptic wastelands for Furiosa, the epic origin story of the eponymous heroine (now played by Anya Taylor-Joy), premiering on Friday. As the follow-up to one of the greatest action films ever made, it’s hard to overstate the hype for Furiosa, and that was before word got out about a showstopping 15-minute sequence that required nearly 200 stuntpeople and took 78 days to shoot. While Furiosa will have its own distinct flavor, as is true of every Mad Max movie, there’s one thing that unites these projects: intense, jaw-dropping scenes of vehicular mayhem. And what better way to honor the franchise than by celebrating what it does best?
Ahead of Furiosa’s release, we’ve put together our definitive ranking of the best car chases in cinema. There weren’t any strict rules in place, other than capping the list at 20—mostly for my own sanity—and limiting every franchise to one entry. (Apologies to Fury Road’s kickass predecessor The Road Warrior.) We also won’t discriminate against scenes that feature motorbikes, so long as cars (and/or trucks) remain part of the equation. As for what, exactly, constitutes a good car chase? Like list making, it’s bound to be subjective, but I tend to gravitate toward two key elements: the skill of the stuntwork on display and the ways in which a filmmaker conveys the action in relation to the story. (Also, the less CGI, the better.) Buckle up, ’cause we’re not wasting any time shifting into high gear.

20. Quantum of Solace (2008)

There have been some memorable car chases in the James Bond franchise: the first sequence featuring the iconic Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger, the corkscrew jump in The Man With the Golden Gun, the Lotus Esprit submarine in The Spy Who Loved Me. But I’m going with a somewhat controversial pick here: Quantum of Solace. There are many issues with Quantum of Solace—namely, it was one of the most high-profile blockbusters affected by the 2007-08 writers strike—but its opening scene isn’t one of them. Picking up right where Casino Royale left off, we find Bond (Daniel Craig) evading henchmen through the narrow roads around Italy’s Lake Garda. The frenetic, furious chase mirrors Bond’s sense of anguish after losing Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), the woman he opened his heart to, and his relentless quest for answers. It’s a thrilling tone-setter for Quantum of Solace and one that doesn’t overstay its welcome, capped off by Bond sending his final pursuers flying off a cliff:
If we’re being honest, though, it feels like James Bond has yet to create a franchise-defining car chase. Perhaps that’s a mission the newest 007, whoever it ends up being, can undertake.

19. Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation (2015)

The Mission: Impossible franchise is no stranger to electrifying chase scenes, the best of which find Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt working up his heart rate. When it comes to action behind the wheel, though, Fallout tends to dominate the discussion—even on this very website. But I think the vehicular chase in Rogue Nation is being slept on. What we have is effectively two sequences for the price of one: The first finds Hunt pursuing Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) by car through the narrow streets of Casablanca alongside some nefarious henchmen; the second sees him continue the chase outside the city on motorbike. (Adding to the chaos: Hunt had only just been resuscitated, and he’s clearly not all there.) In terms of death-defying stunts for the audience’s entertainment, a helmetless Cruise taking corners like a MotoGP racer is child’s play compared to his other exploits, but the actor’s authentic reaction to scraping his knee on the road underlines that there’s no one else in Hollywood doing it like him:
We’ll be sure to update this ranking if and when Cruise does something even more dangerous down the road, pun unintended.

18. Vanishing Point (1971)

A movie that counts the likes of Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino among its biggest fans, Vanishing Point is the first of a few entries on this ranking that’s essentially one extended car chase. The film stars Barry Newman as Kowalski, a man tasked with delivering a Dodge Challenger T 440 Magnum from Colorado to California while eluding police across four states. One of Kowalski’s most memorable run-ins comes when a guy driving a Jaguar E-Type convertible challenges him to an impromptu race. Incredibly, we’re expected to believe the man in the Jag comes out of this crash in one piece:
Vanishing Point might not boast the impressive production values of other movies on this list, but considering Tarantino would go on to feature a white Challenger in Death Proof, its influence in the car cinema canon is undeniable.

17. Fast Five (2011)

Let’s face it, Fast & Furious has seen better days. Some believe the franchise’s dip in quality coincided with the death of Paul Walker; others are dismayed by the pivot from street racing to absurd feats of superherodom—emphasis on the Dom. Perhaps it’s a bit of both, but the very best movie in the series, Fast Five, manages to strike the perfect balance: It’s a relatively grounded heist thriller that nevertheless takes the franchise to ridiculous new heights. After Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew steal $100 million from a Brazilian kingpin, they drag the entire bank vault holding the money through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, all while being pursued by authorities. It’s a delightfully destructive sequence that does untold damage to Rio’s infrastructure and features some of the most bone-crunching crashes committed to film:
If the Fast franchise is going to break out of its recent slump, it would do well to remember that there’s nothing better than letting its heroes live their lives a quarter mile at a time—no detours to outer space required.

16. The Blues Brothers (1980)

A good car chase isn’t reserved just for action flicks: Comedies can get in on the act, too. In The Blues Brothers, starring the recurring Saturday Night Live characters played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, the beloved bandmates must prevent the foreclosure of the orphanage where they were raised by scrounging together $5,000. Naturally, that’s easier said than done: Along the way, the Blues Brothers draw the attention of neo-Nazis, a country-and-western band, and local police. While The Blues Brothers has amusing gags and musical numbers, its chase sequences with the Brothers behind the wheel of a 1974 Dodge Monaco are what really steal the show—and none are better than a climactic pursuit across Chicago. More than 60 old police cars were used in the film, some of which are wrecked in a comically over-the-top pileup:
The sheer scale of The Blues Brothers’ final set piece is commendable in and of itself—as is the movie’s commitment to treating real-life cars like a bunch of Hot Wheels.

15. Baby Driver (2017)

For good and for ill, Edgar Wright’s movies exude an abundance of style, and Baby Driver is no exception. Baby Driver is centered on a clever gimmick: The action works in tandem with its soundtrack because the film’s protagonist, Baby (Ansel Elgort), suffers from tinnitus and constantly plays music to drown out the ringing. When everything’s clicking into place, Baby Driver feels like a supersized series of music videos, and nothing hits quite like its opening sequence. Baby acts as the getaway driver for a bank robbery while listening to the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Bellbottoms.” The ensuing chase works around rhythms of the song, as if Baby’s Subaru WRX were the star of its own dance number. Take nothing away from the actual driving, either, which puts the rally car to good use:
Baby Driver’s gimmick stretches a little thin by the end, but it’s hard to deny the crowd-pleasing power of Wright’s film when it’s firing on all cylinders.

14. The Raid 2 (2014)

With a trio of kickass Indonesian martial arts films under his belt, Gareth Evans has established himself as one of the most exciting action directors on the planet—someone who seems most in his element staging positively brutal hand-to-hand combat. In The Raid 2, however, Evans also brought his signature brand of carnage to the road. While there’s some cleverly executed close-quarters fighting within the confines of an SUV, courtesy of Iko Uwais’s hard-hitting protagonist, what really cements this sequence’s greatness are the moments when Evans turns the cars into an extension of the characters’ fists:
This belongs in an entirely new category of combat: car fights. There are so many action scenes in The Raid 2 worth writing home about—the kitchen showdown is an all-timer—but the fact that Evans casually tossed in an unforgettable car chase shows why he’s one of one.

13. The Driver (1978)

I’ll say this for Walter Hill’s The Driver: It sure lives up to its title. In this stripped-down thriller—one where none of the characters have a name—we follow the Driver (Ryan O’Neal), a getaway driver who has become a thorn in the side of the LAPD. In the film’s best scene, we see its taciturn protagonist living up to his reputation. With the Driver behind the wheel of a 1974 Ford Galaxie, a cat-and-mouse game unfolds when a handful of police cars are hot on his tail. What I love about this sequence is the pared-down nature of it all: The Driver outwits the cops as much as he outraces them. (Though, ironically, that wasn’t entirely by design: As Hill later explained, an accident on the last night of shooting meant they had to cobble together what had already been filmed.) Frankly, you’d never know the difference from the finished article:
If the general vibes of The Driver seem familiar, that’s because it was a major inspiration for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, which just so happened to feature an unnamed protagonist (Ryan Gosling) evading police through the streets of Los Angeles.

12. The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

The shaky-cam style of the Bourne franchise isn’t for everyone—just ask John Woo—but credit where it’s due: These movies know how to deliver a good chase scene. (A friendly reminder that The Bourne Legacy is an underrated gem with an awesome motorbike sequence to boot.) But there’s one Bourne chase that stands above the rest: the Moscow getaway in The Bourne Supremacy. After being wounded by the Russian assassin Kirill (Karl Urban), Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) hijacks a taxi, with both the police and Kirill in hot pursuit. This isn’t the kind of sequence that lingers on any one shot; instead, what makes it work is the frenetic nature of the editing, which allows the viewer to feel like they’re in Bourne’s fight-or-flight headspace:
If I’m being honest, I’m usually one of those people who doesn’t like the Bourne movies’ shaky-cam style, but when it’s executed with such craftsmanship, you can’t help but get caught up in its adrenaline-pumping power.

11. The Seven-Ups (1973)

Philip D’Antoni was the producer of two movies featuring Hall of Fame car chases, Bullitt and The French Connection, the latter of which won him an Oscar for Best Picture. And with his lone directorial feature, The Seven-Ups, D’Antoni sought to craft an iconic sequence of his own. The film stars Roy Scheider as NYPD detective Buddy Mannuci (elite Italian American name; I can practically smell the gabagool), who commands a unit handling major felony cases that lead to seven-plus-year prison sentences; that’s why they’re known as the Seven-Ups. Midway through the movie, when one of the team members is killed by two shooters who flee the scene, Buddy chases after them. The 10-minute sequence, which starts in the Upper West Side before moving out of the city, is thrillingly immersive, alternating between close-ups of the characters and wider shots of all the damage they’ve caused. But the chase’s defining moment comes right at the end, when Buddy narrowly avoids a grisly death:
The sequence isn’t quite at the level of Bullitt or The French Connection—very few are—but D’Antoni still manages to leave an unmistakable imprint on the car chase canon.

10. Death Proof (2007)

If you ask Quentin Tarantino, Death Proof, his knowingly trashy tribute to exploitation cinema, is the worst movie he’s ever made. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to admire about the film, which honors the unsung heroes of Hollywood: stunt performers. The first half of Death Proof follows three female friends who cross paths with Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a misogynistic serial killer who takes them out in his “death-proof” Chevy Nova. Fourteen months later, a group that includes stuntwoman Zoë Bell, playing herself, also lands on Mike’s radar. As Bell and her friends test out a ’70s Challenger, she performs a “ship’s mast” stunt, clinging onto the hood of the car with fastening belts. Unfortunately, when Mike pursues the women, it puts Bell in a precarious situation. Most of the entries on this list celebrate some next-level driving skills, but Death Proof’s inclusion is all about Bell pulling off one of the wildest stunts you’ll ever see. She’s quite literally hanging on for dear life:
If the Academy handed out Oscars to stunt performers—and let’s hope it does happen one day—Bell would’ve won in a landslide.

9. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)

William Friedkin was already responsible for an all-time great car chase in The French Connection (more on that later), but the filmmaker made a commendable bid to outdo himself with To Live and Die in L.A. In this neo-noir thriller, Secret Service agent Richard Chance (William L. Petersen) is hell-bent on arresting an expert counterfeiter, Rick Masters (Willem Dafoe), who kills Chance’s partner days before his retirement. To capture Masters, Chance and his new partner, John Vukovich (John Pankow), attempt to steal $50,000 from a jewelry buyer for an undercover operation. The sting goes bad when the buyer, who is later revealed to be an undercover FBI agent, is killed and a group of gunmen goes after Chance and Vukovich. It’s a clever inversion of the usual car chase formula—this time, it’s the lawmen running away from the criminals. The outside-the-box thinking extends to the film’s most astonishing stretch, in which Chance evades the gunmen by driving into oncoming traffic:
The fact that Friedkin shot the chase at the end of filming—in case anything disastrous happened to the actors—underscores just how risky the endeavor was. The pulse-pounding results speak for themselves.

8. The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

The Matrix sequels have never been held in high esteem, but I’m ready to live my truth: The Matrix Reloaded fucking rules. (If anyone’s got a problem with this take, file your complaints with the Architect.) What’s more, the film happens to boast the finest action set piece of the franchise: the highway chase. After Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) free the Keymaker (Randall Duk Kim), a program capable of creating shortcuts within the Matrix, they’re pursued by the Twins (Neil and Adrian Rayment). Morpheus once warned that going on the freeway was “suicide,” and it doesn’t take long to see why: The chase draws the attention of several Agents, who repeatedly take over the bodies of other drivers on the road. The scene is the best of both worlds: There’s some incredible stuntwork on display, including when Moss weaves around on a Ducati, and CGI augments some feats of superhuman strength. But the most jaw-dropping aspect of the sequence is how it came together, as the production spent $2.5 million to construct its own highway (!) on California’s Alameda Island. If that weren’t unique enough, I’m pretty sure Reloaded is also the only movie in existence in which a katana takes out an SUV:
The Matrix remains the Wachowskis’ masterpiece, but don’t get it twisted: The filmmakers were still cooking with gas in the sequel.

7. Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)

Size isn’t everything, but for H. B. Halicki, who produced, wrote, directed, and starred in Gone in 60 Seconds, it’s certainly part of the package. The indie action flick follows Maindrian Pace (Halicki), a Los Angeles insurance investigator who has a lucrative side hustle jacking high-end cars. The plot kicks into motion when a South American drug lord enlists Pace to nab 48 cars within five days in exchange for $400,000. Of course, Gone in 60 Seconds is best known for what happens after Pace is caught stealing a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1, when he leads police on a chase that lasts a whopping 40 minutes. (More than 90 cars were destroyed in the process.) Halicki, for his part, did all the driving himself, including a spectacular jump off a makeshift ramp of crashed cars:
While Halicki wound up making a few more indies after Gone in 60 Seconds, he died in an accident on the set of its sequel. His legacy as a do-it-all daredevil, however, lives on.

6. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Long before James Cameron immersed himself in the world of Pandora, he was a pioneer of state-of-the-art visual effects. Case in point: Terminator 2: Judgment Day is credited for having the first CGI character in a blockbuster, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), a killing machine composed of a futuristic liquid metal. But Cameron also understood that the CGI of that era shouldn’t be the main attraction: It worked best as a complement to the practical effects, as seen in Judgment Day’s epic viaduct chase. When the T-1000 tracks down a young John Connor (Edward Furlong) in a shopping mall, he’s saved at the last minute by the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), giving John a chance to escape on his dirt bike. As the T-1000 gives chase, the David and Goliath vibes between man and machine are further epitomized by the T-1000’s commandeering of a truck. The sequence already has a terrifying sense of urgency, but it hits another level when the T-1000 crashes through the viaduct like the Kool-Aid Man:
Big Jim is still revolutionizing what can be achieved with visual effects in the Avatar franchise, and while I cherish those movies, nothing beats his old-school showmanship.

5. Duel (1971)

The feature-length debut of Steven Spielberg—perhaps you’ve heard of him—the TV movie Duel is essentially one extended chase sequence between salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) and a sinister trucker determined to drive him off the road. I’ve attached a clip from the ending of the film, but that doesn’t do Duel justice. What cements this movie’s greatness is how it sustains an unbearable level of tension across its 90-minute running time—with a budget under $500,000, no less. Spielberg’s masterstroke is never once showing us the other driver, anthropomorphizing the truck itself as a monster. (You can see a lot of similarities with how he would build suspense in Jaws.) When Mann finally gets the upper hand, tricking his adversary into driving off a cliff, it feels like you can breathe again:
Spielberg would move on to bigger and better things after Duel, but considering how much the director accomplished with so little, you can’t help but wonder what else he could conjure up with limited resources.

4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Like Duel, Fury Road is basically one long car chase—the difference is Miller got to work with a blockbuster budget, and made every cent of it count. It’s hard to pick a single standout sequence in Fury Road, but if I had to choose, I’d go with the first attack on the War Rig after Furiosa (Charlize Theron) flees with the wives of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Here’s why: Think back to when you saw Fury Road for the first time, before you fully grasped the vehicular carnage that was in store. And then stuff like this kept happening:
To quote Steven Soderbergh’s thoughts on Fury Road: “I don’t understand how they’re not still shooting that film and I don’t understand how hundreds of people aren’t dead.” Whether or not Miller manages to one-up the action in Furiosa, the director is already in the pantheon.

3. The French Connection (1971)

We return to the Friedkin-verse for what may be his best film, The French Connection, the crime thriller based on Robin Moore’s 1969 nonfiction book of the same name. The story concerns two NYPD detectives, Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (Roy Scheider), and their tireless pursuit of a French heroin smuggler. But while there’s plenty to admire about how The French Connection illustrates the thin line between police and criminals, its greatest claim to fame is its car chase. After Popeye narrowly survives a sniper attack, he goes after the shooter, who escapes on an elevated train. The ensuing sequence is true daredevil filmmaking that Friedkin shot without permits, leading to real crashes with New Yorkers that made the final cut. But Friedkin’s finest touch was mounting a camera to the front of the car, making the audience feel like they’re part of the action:
My Ringer colleague Justin Sayles believes The French Connection’s chase should’ve landed at no. 1, and I’m sure many folks will agree with him. Being the only film on this list to win Best Picture, however, is a solid consolation prize.

2. Bullitt (1968)

When it comes to modern car chases, all roads lead back to Bullitt. A Dad Cinema classic, the film stars Steve McQueen as Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco detective who pursues a group of mobsters after a key witness is killed in protective custody. In his search for answers, Bullitt realizes he’s being tailed by a couple of hitmen, and then turns the tables on them. From there, the chase is on. Aside from McQueen doing most of his own stunts behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback, what’s so impressive about the sequence is how timeless it is. Even the little imperfections, like hubcaps repeatedly coming off the wheels, work to the film’s advantage, stressing just how much these drivers are living on a razor’s edge. It’s been more than 50 years since Bullitt revolutionized the car chase, and yet few movies since have felt like they’re pushing the envelope to such an exhilarating degree:
That the car driven by McQueen was recently sold at auction for $3.74 million, a then-record price for a Mustang, underlines Bullitt’s enduring legacy.

1. Ronin (1998)

“If I’m going to do a car chase,” filmmaker John Frankenheimer said in an interview with the American Society of Cinematographers, “I’m going to do a car chase that’s going to make somebody think about whether or not they want to do another one!” Boy, did he ever. In Frankenheimer’s late-career masterpiece, Ronin, the director actually incorporated several chases, but it’s the climactic sequence that stands alone as the greatest ever filmed. The movie concerns an international group of mercenaries who are hired to steal a mysterious briefcase; a series of double-crosses and double-bluffs ensue. But for the final chase, all you need to know is that Sam (Robert De Niro), a mercenary with ties to the CIA, is in pursuit of Deirdre (Natascha McElhone), an IRA operative in possession of the case. Winding through the streets and tunnels of Paris, what’s most striking is just how fluid it all feels. You’re completely engrossed in the chase’s forward momentum, captured from every conceivable angle; a symphony of controlled chaos. The driving styles even reflect the characters: Deirdre is reckless and impulsive, while Sam remains calm and controlled.
There are many worthy car chases in this ranking, but in my view, Ronin takes pole position. And while I can’t imagine a movie ever topping what Frankenheimer achieved, I’d love nothing more than to be proved wrong.

Background Applications: DISCORD, CHROME, VANGUARD, STEAM, WALLPAPER ENGINE,
Description of Original Problem: Games freeze instantly after I try and launch them. I originally thought this was something that was happening from each individual game but I have ruled that out after having the same problem in many different games. For example, Diablo 4, Civilization 6, Overwatch, and Hades 2. Strangely, some games do work on my computer. Monster Hunter World, World of Warcraft, and Valorant all work. That said, Valorant had the same issue until I fixed it by turning on compatibility mode. When these games freeze I can not close them normally and the only way to get them to close is by rebooting my computer. Even when I try to close them through Task Manager they remain open. Aside from that my CPU runs hot and my computer takes a long time to reboot. I'm very new to computers and this computer has been my first project.
Troubleshooting: I have tried just about everything that I could find online and I am open to any suggestions. If my computer still does not work I will either take it to a technician or I will just sell it lol.

2024.05.21 16:26 catoco123 I'm 40 years old, have almost 20 years of business experience in large tech, and have decided to complete an online checkbox program, does the school actually matter?

I turn 40 this year. I currently work in the software/tech industry in a frontline management role making around $135k in total compensation, and I have a history of working for some of the largest software companies in the world (mostly through luck and social skills as my original undergrad grades were abysmal, and I just recently finished my bachelor's degree from a small state school after 20 years). I want an MBA to help boost me out of Management and into an Executive role. I do not plan on switching careers or industries. Any program I do MBA-wise would be out-of-pocket.
On this sub, this type of scenario seems to be pushed one of two ways - either to UIUC/Boston University due to cost and brand name or to an Executive MBA program for much more money. I will likely go the UIUC/Boston route, but it got me thinking: at this stage of my career, and with the network I've already built, does the school really matter as long as it is fully accredited (AACSB)? Would an MBA from Boston University really do anything different than an MBA from LSU-Shreveport at half the price? I wouldn't need to ride the name-brand to find work and I wouldn't necessarily need to rely on the network either.
I understand that having some semblance of prestige is nice, but would it really matter in this scenario?

2024.05.21 16:19 Filmyboy7 A detailed review of the VARC1000 course by Gejo Sir! Do go through this! :')

So, as the title says this is a post on the review and guide to VARC1000 course by Gejo Sir (the VARC God for me I'll say) 🤌🏻 First, I would like to add 2 important notes :)
Note 1 : I went through this year's VARC1000 course and it's very different from last year's course but I'll try to give you a review of it 🫠
Note 2 : You'll find many people suggesting and saying that "pirated content le le" and stuff. But I won't really suggest that. VARC1000 course is more than what the pirated content will offer. It's not just about VARC okay? It will help you with DILR and QA too (Last year Gejo sir had made videos on how he himself solved DILR and gives really amazing tips and tricks). There will be content/materials for GDPI prepration, profile analyser (which I didn't really find helpful tbh), calls predictor (which again turned out to be not so true in my case but for others it was helpful), daily vocab, GK section, WAT topics, your acads specific questions generally asked during PIs etc etc. All this you won't get in the pirated stuff. You'll just get the videos of his lecs that's it. Course hi lena bhai if possible 🙂
👉🏻 Coming to the course's details : This time they have divided the course into 4 sections Launch Phase, Enhance Phase, Advanced Phase and Peak Phase. And each phase (from Enhance Phase) will be launched in specific months from June onwards. As of now the Launch Phase is active 👀
Coming to the description of the phases : As per my understanding it's perfectly summed up to take you from the very basic (launch phase) to the advanced level (peak phase) 🔥
Focus more on the Core Lessons which Gejo Sir will teach you. He'll just tell you the methods and tricks in these videos ig (that's what happened in the last course) and then maybe he'll teach you to apply them. He'll take a particular RC and solve it. Focus on how he deals with all this okay? Obv take the learnings and develop your own strategy/method (you can copy him but we all can't be like him) 😂
He'll throw some tests before the start of the video.. apply your brains there and see how you do. Then he'll also come up with the strategy lessons (very important) wherein he'll tell you about how to approach the VARC section in those 40 mins and what approach you should have. The core lessons, application lessons and strategy lessons were launched together last year in the course and were really helpful! Till now all the is for RC btw. For VA the material won't be much different but he'll teach you specially about how to deal with the VA too!
Then comes the Daily Article Dose! Do it! Roz karo! It's really good. He'll upload the solutions for it. For every article dose he'll do that and solve it for you. Also, throughout this course you'll find a diverse range of RCs! Humanities, Philosophy, Natural Sciences, Arts etc etc. Everything. And I hope that like last year, this year also he'll make seperate videos for every genre! It's really helpful in that sense! 🍻😌
Coming to the tests! He'll give you a lot of sectional tests (minimum 10 sectional tests) and previous year ke course ke bhi kuch tests alagse (this happened in the last year's course). So you need not worry about the sectionals. You'll get a satisfactory number of those. He'll also solve some sectionals for you. You'll be able to see how he solves the VARC section (trust me you'll be amazed seeing his way of solving). You'll also get Daily Drills where you'll have small tests or say 1-2 RCs and a few VA questions etc. this will also be there. Also, you'll get PY CAT papers as mocks and also as sectional tests separately! So that's also a done deal!! 🍻✨
Don't miss Gejo sir's live sessions! He'll have 1-2 every month ig. And those will be really helpful. It's an interactive session so you can ask your doubts there. He's a very funny guy so you won't be bored. He'll also give you some videos (hopefully) on how to approach DILR! He's a genius in DILR also (atleast for me) 💥
Then comes the Telegram Group of VARC1000 where Gejo sir will also be there! It's a very interactive group and very much helpful. A really nice place to be in I'll say as you'll find serious aspirants mostly.
I hope that I was able to include most of the important things of this course and if needed I'll update this post in the future! :')
Overall I'll say that this course is worth it? It'll definitely improve your VARC skills and understanding if you follow it religiously. As I have said... This course is not just about VARC but there are many many things in it and it'll turn out to be helpful overall! 🩵 Do share this review with your friends and other aspirants! 😼
All the best with your prep! If you have anything to add about the course or your opinions then feel free to drop it in the comments! ;')

2024.05.21 16:17 Worth_Manager3174 CPS was called

Was your first thought really to turn to social media and blast that you're under investigation. I mean you specifically said my damn daughter- I'm sorry but it's your job to protect her and you're upset because you failed to do so. Repeatedly. It takes CPS for you to finally stop exploiting your child, see the issues here. If it was false they wouldn't be knocking on daddy's door. I truly hope they get the help they desperately need for that baby. Maybe get off social media, I mean if you're going to blame your followers, why bait them even more. Stupidity and $$, still exploiting your child just not showing her face through the process. Stellar dad of the year, you really are something special. 🫶 You're wife's eyes are dead, is anyone home, does she even comprehend the seriousness? Her disability severally impacts her daily life and her ability and instead of acknowledging the facts at hand, you two wanna place blame on others and make excuses. This is the time you step back, take the help and be the parents you two wish you could be, and make it a reality. It's disgusting the events at hand, zero accountability, zero change. Grow up your 40.. you couldn't afford gas drops, you can't afford to live on your own, you refuse to work, what exactly do you have going for you? You don't have the availability to get a lawyer and no lawyer will take a case on just to seek revenge on an anonymous call! I don't think they were false allegations and that's why you're mad. You're time has come 🤡

2024.05.21 16:14 Red5T65 FEH New Heroes Banner Idea: Solmic Party

FEH New Heroes Banner Idea: Solmic Party
I'd say most people figure that the next Engage New Heroes Banner is going to be Solm for obvious reasons, considering it's the last major nation and the timing lines up for it to be one of the summer month New Heroes banners. With that in mind, here's my ideas for it. First up, Timerra!
https://preview.redd.it/ivg6qz7tbs1d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=2a41664c3cf30c875d8360566cea015cc5d6ab1d
HP/Def superboons, Spd/Res superbanes
PRF: Sentinel’s Spear: 16 Might. Grants Def +3. If foe initiates combat or foe’s HP ≥ 50% at start of combat, grants Atk/Spd/Def/Res +5 to unit during combat, Special cooldown charge +1 per unit’s attack, (only highest value applied; does not stack) foe cannot make a follow-up attack, and if unit’s Def > foe’s Def, grants Special cooldown count -1 to unit before unit’s first attack, inflicts Special cooldown count +1 on foe before foe's first attack, unit deals damage = difference between stats, (max 10) and reduces damage from foe’s attacks and area-of-effect specials (excluding Røkkr area-of-effect Specials) by percentage = difference between stats × 4 (max 40%). If unit’s attack triggers Special, reduces damage from foe’s attacks by 40%, and further reduces damage from foe’s attacks by 20% of unit’s Def.
Spd/Def Finish doesn't exist yet but it works the same as all the other Finish skills.
Pretty simple godlance set-up, all things considered, but there's honestly not much else you can do with her; admittedly she doesn't actually have slaying cuz of her Def stack but she also has in-combat Special jump so that's useful. Also she has Scowl off a Def check which as you can probably guess she will usually win fairly handily, which helps her survivability a lot.
Next, here's Panette!
https://preview.redd.it/3icnyqb5cs1d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=785ed4cefb032d4db11e9865f3efcc4767d4e278
Atk/Res superboons, HP superbane
PRF: Blood Rage Axe: 16 Might. Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count -1). At start of turn, deals 1 damage to unit and allies within 2 spaces of unit. At start of combat, if unit’s HP ≤ 99%, grants Atk/Def +7 to unit during combat, and Special cooldown charge +1 per attack (only highest value applied; does not stack), unit makes a guaranteed follow-up attack, and reduces damage from foe’s first attack by 40%, and if unit’s attack triggers Special, unit deals damage = 20% of missing HP per attack. If unit’s Atk > foe’s Atk, grants Special cooldown count -1 to unit before unit’s first attack, nullifies foe’s effects which prevent unit’s follow-up attack, unit deals damage = 15% of unit’s Atk, and reduces damage from foe’s attacks by 15% of unit’s Atk. After combat, if unit attacked, deals 1 damage to unit.
Wrath 4: Inflicts Atk/Def -4 on foe during combat. If unit’s HP ≤ 99% and unit’s attack can trigger unit’s Special, grants Special cooldown count -1 before unit’s first attack, unit deals damage = 20% of unit’s Atk and nullifies foe’s skills which “reduce damage by X%” when Special triggers. (Includes skills which affect area-of-effect Specials) After combat, grants Special cooldown count -1 to unit.
As you'd expect out of Panette, her claim to fame is a Wrath build, and while she doesn't have Vantage to really complete the set, she does still have all the Special jumping you could ever need; with Wrath active and winning an Atk check she gets -2 CD before she actually attacks, and comboed with the precharge from Pulse and slaying means she gets off 4 CD Specials on her first hit. As with most units based around being at not full HP, she also automatically gets herself below that mark in the same way the Bernadettas do.
After Panette, it's her older brother Pandreo!
https://preview.redd.it/mpdvdezlds1d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=d63c6f96cd814df13a8668239d15e53f071d18d8
Atk/Res superboons, HP/Spd superbanes
...Unfortunately we can't all be winners, and Pandreo is suffering the fate of the banner demote. Here's the staff:
Party Baton+: 12 Might. Grants Res +3. If unit initiates combat, or unit is within 3 spaces of an ally, grants Atk/Spd/Res +X to unit during combat, (X = 3 + number of allies within 3 spaces) and reduces damage from foe’s attacks during combat by Y% (Y = 20 + number of allies within 3 spaces × 10%, max 40%).
If he wasn't a Demote he'd get Wrathful Staff in weapon, damage on Special, an actually damaging Special, Dazzling Shift, and Res Ploy 4 (which works like the other single stat Ploys)
Finally, to cap off the banner, Attuned Fogado!
https://preview.redd.it/txr53llzes1d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=38b8db94b246c686e739daf2da47ef9d888d88f3
HP/Res superboons, Spd superbane
The kit may be a bit overplayed, but the skills certainly aren't.
PRF: Charmer’s Bow: 14 Might. Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count -1). At start of turn, deals 1 damage to unit and allies within 2 spaces of unit. If unit initiates combat, unit is within 2 spaces of an ally, or unit’s HP ≤ 99% at start of combat, grants Atk/Spd +6 to unit during combat, and grants the following effects based on how many of those 3 conditions apply: if ≥ 1, inflicts Special cooldown charge -1 per attack on foe; if ≥ 2, foe cannot make a follow-up attack, and calculates damage using lower of foe’s Def or Res; if = 3, unit attacks twice. If unit’s attack triggers Special, unit deals +10 damage when Special triggers.
PRF Special: Back At You: 3 CD. Boosts damage by 50% of damage dealt to unit. Reduces damage from foe’s attacks by 40%, and additionally boosts damage by total damage reduced. (From any source, including other skills; resets at end of combat) (Skill is not inheritable.)
S/D Far Trace 4: Enables【Canto (Rem.; Min 1)】. Inflicts Spd/Def -4 on foe during combat and unit deals +7 damage including when dealing damage with a Special triggered before combat.
Attuned Skill: Desperate Echo: If user's HP ≤ 50% and user initiates combat, user makes follow-up attack before foe's counterattack.
As you can probably guess based on the kit, Fogado's primary focus is based around taking hits and retaliating from low HP and bowling you over with the fact he was at low HP (and you hit him), literally the living embodiment of "why are you hitting yourself?"
It's an annoying-ass playstyle considering how much he kites, but hey, it works.
Edit: Nudge+ on Fogado is an error, disregard it. It was an artifact from Pandreo.
Speaking of Pandreo, if he's not the banner demote, they could make Bunet that (or an auto-demote). Here's what I think that'd look like:
https://preview.redd.it/6a7k4ualhs1d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=805e1bb1dc995e497efc9008888084554711cbd2
Spd/Res superboons, Atk superbane
Weapon: Chef's Knife+: 14 Might. If an Assist skill is used by unit or targets unit, grants Atk/Def/Res +5 and Special cooldown count -1 to unit and target ally or unit and targeting ally, and if unit is within 2 spaces of an ally during combat, grants Atk/Def/Res +5 to unit and nullifies unit’s penalties during combat. Allies within 2 spaces receive Atk/Def/Res +3 during combat.
If nothing else he's Flow Guard fodder I guess?
