Over the past few months I've been receiving calls from users (mostly using webmail) who can't open "winmail.dat" file attachments. These file attachments are a time-wasting nuisance, and I thought this problem was resolved long ago, but apparently not as it seems MS-OutLook (only the Windows versions so far) is foisting Microsoft's proprietary TNEF encoding on the world again. Is there some new version of MS-OutLook that's doing this, or was it just a mass Windows Update that changed a Windows Registry setting on peoples' computers?
I'm curious if anyone is just outright blocking messages with "winmail.dat" attachments from their mail servers (as I'm tempted to start doing), and if so, is there a web site you're directing users to that helps them fix their eMail software configuration (that also doesn't attempt to chastise people for using Microsoft's products)?

I've checked the situation, both on the webmail page and in the notifications settings of my Firefox browser, as well as in the system settings of Windows 11. It seems that I have enabled and left the default settings for all these notifications.

Ever since Bluehost updated their dashboard / interface about 6 months ago, I have had issues with my email not sending / receiving and my websites being completely down.
I cannot even log in to webmail directly. The web page sits and spins and I get an error message “This site cannot be reached”.
My email stops working EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. For at least 2 to 4 hours or longer.
When I contact Bluehost about it, they deny anything is wrong on their end. They claimed once that my IP address wasn’t “white listed”, but it is. My boyfriend who works in IT, sitting right beside me, has no problems with his emails. My gmail accounts work just fine. I know Bluehost is doing something on their end to force my email to work, because every time I talk to them, I know they do something on their end and then all of a sudden my email starts working again, but every time they deny anything was wrong.
I am curious what could actually be going wrong that they are not admitting to?
Another issue that I have seen talked about on Reddit, are my emails suddenly going to spam mid-thread. My client emails me, I respond, they receive it, they respond back, I respond again then that email response suddenly gets sent to spam.
This week all of my websites were down for 2 days. They would get redirected to a domain name I own, but there isn’t a website associated with that domain name.
Why would my published websites suddenly be pointing to or being redirected to a different / wrong domain name?
WTF is going on at Bluehost!?!
If I move my email accounts to Google Suite or Microsoft will this help solve my email issues?
Obviously, I am also looking for a new web host. Any recommendations?

Seems like they've removed the functionality I've had for years that allowed me to use local calendar clients to manage my calendar. Does anyone know if there's a work-around that I'm missing to get it to work without having to pay more for a private server, or if I were to migrate my website over to another shared hosting service, can I expect to be able to manage my calendar on local clients like Apple Mail?
It seems so trivial — and web hosting services don't really talk about their calendar features — but I'd like to have basic calendar functionality (accept meeting invites, check my agenda, etc) from the comfort of my local calendar client (rather than only through the Roundcube webmail client), as I have for years.

I lost my phone which was configured with the second factor authentication for my GMX account. I can still access my account with an app-specific password that was configured (Outlook / Thunderbird desktop clients), but can't sign into web interface.
The support page talks about "A stringent verification process is required, and is not always successful", how do I initiate this process. I have access to the mailbox (outlook), can receive emails to my account, know the account password, can do whatever else to verify my identity, just cannot access the webmail / account settings.
I don't think I have this 'secret key generated during setup' that the support page talks about either. 😢

How I Boosted My Productivity While Working on Multiple Projects
As a freelance web developer, app creator, and open-source maintainer, I have to constantly switch back and forth between multiple workflows, such as editing code, designing mockups, managing to-do lists, searching for icons and docs, executing command lines, checking emails with different accounts and so on. Each of these switches requires a constant stream of repetitive actions:
  • Launch a code or image editor, and open the files of a specific project in it.
  • Open a web browser, and navigate to the project in a task manager.
  • Navigate to an icon website, set image filters, and perform a search.
  • Open a webmail app, and switch accounts.
  • Launch Terminal, and enter commands into it.
  • etc…
Everything is scattered in different places, and it turns the whole process into a real mess. And when working on multiple projects, things get even worse. I thought I could greatly improve my productivity by collecting everything I needed to get my work done in one place and organizing it into projects and workflows so that they had the right context.
Projects and workflows will have clear boundaries, and switching between them will no longer be a nightmare. So, I came up with Freeter, an organizer app that does just that. And recently released it as a forever free and open-source project.
In this short post, I'll show you how I’ve increased my productivity with Freeter, using three workflows as examples. I hope this gives you some ideas on how you too can improve your productivity.

Workflows

First, I analyzed my workflows and everything I often do when I’m looking for something I need while working on a project:
  1. When I’m developing an app or website, I often need to be able to access the task manager, open project files in code and image editors, search for icons and docs on specific websites, jot down quick ideas, and open the project repository in a web browser.
  2. When I check email and Twitter DMs, I need access to the webmail and the Twitter DM page. I have multiple accounts and need to be logged in with project-specific ones.
  3. When I release a new version of the app, I need to run the release command in the Terminal app, open the releases page in the git repository, open the task manager, and open the "planned feature" post editor in the Freeter community.
Now, it’s time to turn them into Freeter workflows.

App/Website Development

To have quick access to the things I need to develop the app/website, I set up a workflow screen using the following widgets:
  • Tasks: Webpage widget, to embed the project’s task manager right into the workflow screen.
  • Edit Code: File Opener widget, to open the project folder in the code editing program.
  • Edit Mockup: File Opener widget, to open the mockup file in the image editing program.
  • MDN: Web Query widget, to search MDN Web Docs website.
  • Node.js Docs: Web Query widget, to search Node.js Docs website.
  • Outline Icons: Web Query widget, to search a website with icons, filtered by outline icons.
  • Fill Icons: Web Query widget, to search a website with icons, filtered by fill icons.
  • Notes: Note widget, to jot down quick ideas while developing a feature.
  • Open Repo: Link Opener widget, to open the project repository in a web browser.
  • Bug Reports: Link Opener widget, to open the bug reports page in a web browser.
  • Feature Requests: Link Opener widget, to open the feature requests page in a web browser.
App Dev Workflow
This workflow allows me to immediately switch to the development context, launch everything I need to start the development process with a simple click, quickly search docs & icons, and quickly access the task list.

Messages

To check emails and Twitter DMs, I set up a workflow using two Webpage widgets:
  • To embed the Google Mail inbox page.
  • To embed the Twitter DM page.
I also set Session Scope to Project in the widget settings so that I can be logged in under different accounts in other projects.
Messages Workflow
This workflow allows me to quickly get simultaneous access to Google Mail and Twitter DMs for project-specific accounts.

New Release

To release a new version of the app, I set up a workflow with these five widgets:
  • Release: Commander widget, to execute a command line in Terminal that asks for a new version number and starts a draft build of the new version.
  • Open Releases: Link Opener widget, to open the releases page in the web browser.
  • Tasks: A copy of Tasks from the App Dev workflow. I will need it to see all the Finished tasks in the current release.
  • Planned Features: Webpage widget, to embed the Freeter community's "planned features" page into the workflow screen. With its help, I update the planned features and post about implemented features in the new release.
  • Release steps: Note widget, to not forget to do something during the release.
New Release Workflow
Thanks to this workflow, I can easily release a new version and post updates about new features.

Switch Between Workflows Like a Superhero

Now, when I switch between projects and workflows, I simply press Ctrl+Shift+F to bring Freeter to the front, open the workflow tab I need at the time, and get right to work.

Hello all.
Looking for some opinions with on-prem email solutions. Currently I run a small MailEnable server with about 200 mailboxes and while there have been talks to go cloud I haven't seen any of the C-Level guys push in that direction. Our solution works well most of the time but I'm starting to see issues with certain mailboxes using IMAP where mail just doesn't sync across all devices or messages are malformed, just to name a few. For example, an email might not show in Outlook on a user's computer, but it will exist on their phone or in our WebMail client. On top of these issues, our mail server is often bogged down or at least runs like it is. On some days if I try to check logs it may take a few minutes to load the logs, which aren't huge btw (maybe 100MB per) but while the server is loading the log file, all the clients at my workplace also have to wait to send or receive mail. The server seems to literally be the bottleneck but this doesn't happen consistently. I noticed CPU and RAM usage during these times are still low (0-8%) but disk read/writes are through the roof.
Part of the issue also is our server has 2TB of storage and yet it is about 90% full. My workplace refuses to follow some kind of retention policy and believes every email EVER should be accessible at any time within seconds. This simply isn't possible at my workplace with these attitudes there, yet I'm constantly being hounded by C-Level about email issues.
I guess my questions are:
  1. If you run an on-prem mail server, do you archive old mail? If so, what are the options to doing this? I've heard of archiver appliances and currently (and unofficially might I add) I am running a MailPiler server for archiving. I'm trying to show C-Level that we need to do something before it gets out of hand.
  2. How do you keep inboxes small? MailEnable suggests not going over 5GB per mailbox but that seems pretty low. However, I do notice that the mailboxes with the most issues are users with hundreds of thousands of emails in their inbox. I think a retention policy enforced with quotas is the way to go?
  3. What would you suggest for server specs? Currently I run a Cisco UCS 200 series with 2x 12c/24t Xeons, 32GB of RAM and 2TB 10k SAS drives in RAID1. MailEnable runs really well on here most of the time but has hiccups when there's a lot going on. For example, if multiple users decide to delete old emails or move emails to other folders this can cause the server to slow down exponentially to the point where others will put in tickets asking if something is up with email.
  4. Should I just give up entirely and try to convince C-Level to go cloud?

Are there any major drawbacks / security / privacy issues when using a Email Client such as Thunderbird, compared to using Webmail. I dont mean being spyed on by the client itself, but rather maybe other programs reading the Emails or something?
Or is webmail even less secure because of web tracking?
Sorry im really not well informed at this topic, but online I have read statements that value webmail and ones that value a client more privacy and security wise. Btw I dont use PGP but just TLS (my email provider is mailbox.org).

2024.04.19 21:39 DecaturNC I would like to hear how folks use Fastmail and other email services together.

I am asking because I need some ideas/inspiration for either adjusting my current workflow or creating a new workflow for dealing with three email accounts using email applications and webmail interfaces. Also, I like reading about how people do stuff.
I use Fastmail as my primary email service, iCloud for everything else (calendar, contract, to-to, notes, etc. and as a secondary email) and Gmail because I have a few Google services and it is my oldest email address.
Currently I have Apple Mail and Thunderbird setup on my Mac and Apple Mail and the respective apps (Gmail and Fastmail) setup on my iPhone to get email from all three accounts. When I am using my comptuer at work I use the web interface for all three services. In the past I have used Apple Mail on my desktop and iphone to connect only to Fastmail with iCloud and Gmail forwarding to Fastmail.
There are pros and cons doing it both ways. I fluctuate between the two. If you don't mind sharing I would like to see what other people do.

2024.04.15 14:49 Accurate-Idea-5986 new outlook spell check

I am using "NEW" outlook desktop client on a windows 11 machine. In new outlook I have issues with spell check changing to German on its own. About once or twice a week spell check on new outlook changes to German. I have to go into the editor settings add US English back and remove DE. I dont know why this keeps happening.
It is only the local install of new outlook - Webmail and other 365 apps both local and web this is not happening in
The language of the app never changes - just spell check
the change happens while outlook is open - one email spell check is fine. the next everything is underlined in red as im typing.
There are no Gernam language packs installed on my windows 11 PC. Everything is in english.
My language in 365 portal is set to english and set to syncronize accross all 365 apps.

any idea what is causing this?

If cost (within reason) is not a factor, who has the best support for web and email hosting? I mean, someone who actually knows what they're doing, available by phone, to walk through a non-IT employee as to how to fix their mail or web site (Wordpress) problems, with out a 45-minute wait.
Sooooo tired of GoDaddy.
Background: Small company, low-traffic web site, email for 10 active users + 10 to 20 ancillary accounts.
(Also, since GoDaddy mail is 'mail.outlook.com', if we get a new mail provider, does our webmail on our servers carry over to the new provider?)
