The lecture was supposed to be on Rationality 101, apparently not for Newcomers only. Serene was there to have her back but G was having a hard time focusing.
The boring black uniform more fitting for a hotel receptionist defaced the godlike beauty standing in front of a huge screen. Gentry couldn’t believe her eyes: this was the man she had her hands on a little while ago?
No, it couldn’t be.
It had been just an avatar, too perfect in its unblemished visage, too pure for this world. Yet the man whose face she remembered as if it was etched on the back of her eyelids, who she’d been constantly thinking about, who her hands itched to snatch, was standing right there, in the flesh.
Back in the dreamy simulated world she caught herself thinking that a trim waist like this couldn’t anatomically work on a human, yet here he was: a towering spread of fit shoulders perfectly balanced above the flexible whip of his midsection. The light-grey eyes that betrayed every movement of his pupils were as real as the ones that reflected the mock moon during her test. Below them lay the sharp slope of the cheekbones one could cut themselves on.
The only thing a bit different, apart from the outfit choice, was the young god’s hair. In the simulation, it was flowing and probably too long to be practical. This person’s mane was much shorter and fell down his neck in a neat ponytail, tastefully tamed with a single hairpin.
She had to get her hands on this treasure.
He was making last minute preparations for the lecture, looking through the papers on the desk, dark strands framing his face, light grey eyes sharp in careful concentration.
Professor Q, huh.
He said this was his name, and so did the note on the lecture hall door.
She was sure it was the man who had melted in her arms making the most delicious sounds a male throat could produce.
Had he recognised her?
Unlikely.
At the time of the simulation session, she didn’t have a camera that could pick up her facial features but just to be on the safe side, she decided to go by “G” in his class. There were bound to be lots of people with a name starting with a G, right? What would be the odds it was this particular newcomer that Q had tested that would end up in his class?
The man finally lifted his eyes at the audience and a gentle smile momentarily graced his features before disappearing as if he didn’t see someone he’d expected to.
The holoboard on the wall behind him obediently lit up following his nonchalant gesture. Gentry found it annoying that one needed a pair of special glasses to see all the augmented reality stuff and really navigate the city but again, with Sereen’s help she had more or less gotten used to it in the couple of days she had to deal with the necessities like settling down, getting food and finding her way around Ashtapada.
Still, could they use a piece of chalk or, at least, a marker to write on the board? No need to show off your Fully Automated Luxury Space Communism tech just to write a couple of notes on the board!
On second thought, high-tech-crazy or not, if this city brought up men like this one, she would definitely do her best to stay here to… reap the benefits!
They took a desk next to a huge clear floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the winter garden.
“Professor Q seems a little distracted today,” Sereen said, swiftly tapping a couple of buttons on G’s wrist to show her how to confirm that she was attending the lecture. “He’s usually much more chatty and friendly. I wonder what got into him.”
“Is he?” Gentry responded with an artificial air of indifference. “I just hope he’s more open to a discussion than that Poe guy.”
“He is! And Professor Poe isn’t that bad,” Sereen reprimanded before chuckling a little — since his little secret became known to students, he became known as Holopoe. “Just wait and see, it’s gonna be a blast. Q’s lectures are always very engaging.”
It proved to be utter bullshit.
After fiddling with the symbols on the interactive screen for ten minutes into the class, students getting more and more agitated behind his back, the lecturer seemed to give up. Turning back to the audience, he absentmindedly nodded to a couple of people in the lecture hall and sighed with a painfully fake smile.
“For today’s class, we are going to need to read a certain extract from a book,” he said, tone apologetic for some reason, but it solidified G’s conviction that she already knew this person. “I’ve just sent it to each of your wristcomms. We’ll have some quiet time and read it by ourselves, alright?”
“Reading from the comm?” Sereen mumbled to herself. “Couldn’t he just print them out?”
The rest of the students’ grumbles showed that they shared her disappointment. Q could only hopelessly smile again before returning to his work on the board.
Reading from the little semi-transparent screens was indeed torture. Quickly giving up on trying to awkwardly use gestures for scrolling through the text, she looked out of the window to entertain herself with the garden outside. From the modest height they were sitting at, the people below were quite discernible, partly hidden by the greenery, spread here and there in small groups and pairs. Gentry longed to be there, too. What was the use of being here with the most attractive person in the whole world if the only thing she could see was his back?
Well, the back didn’t look half bad, if she was honest, and what was below also pleased the eye.
But still. It would soon bore even the most easily entertained.
Her gaze fell to a small clearing where a lone male figure was sitting, writing something in a notebook. By the looks of it, the notebook was a real paper-made thing without the bells and whistles usual for Ashtapada. The next thing G noticed was a pair of slender legs, barefoot, stretched to dip the toes into the clear water of the artificial stream.
God bless the urban designers of this place!
The figure lifted the head and in an inconceivably graceful motion, swung the long blond bangs away from the face.
G straightened her back. Was it... Ok, maybe Q was the most handsome man she’d seen in her life but this... This was the younger boy she’d noticed a couple of days back, the one in a plaid skirt, shamelessly flirting with everyone within reach. Today, he wasn’t wearing one but the blue jeans hugging his thighs, rolled up almost to the knees, presented a picture just as tantalizing. Even with the hair was a completely different colour, even though the half-up, half-down style kept his face hidden, she was absolutely certain it was the same person.
Just you wait, young beauty, as soon as this “lecture” was over, your princess in shining armour was coming to pick you up!
Suddenly snapping out of the dull weariness, she turned on the auglasses S helped her obtain earlier and tapped away on her comm screen.
What a chance to give the local text sharing feature a go!
“The garden is pretty, but with a blossom like you, it is truly breathtaking. I wonder if anyone has picked this sweet flower or if anyone dares to,” she typed a cheesy note and folded the message into a neat 3D figurine of an origami paper crane with her fingers in the air.
Was S watching? Screw it, even if she was, she couldn’t read the message with her glasses off, right?
Carefully aiming the device at the lone figure, she launched the crane downwards, and it fluttered like a weightless butterfly in spirals, through the glass and right into the young man’s lap, not disturbing the notebook pages. He started at first at the intrusion but then turned his own glasses on and unfolded the message. A shy smile appeared on his plump lips, and he looked flattered, turning his head around to see if the sender was in sight. Catching no one, he typed something below the initial message and deftly folded it back into a crane that, to G’s surprise, flew directly at her, in uneven spirals along the wall. The man traced it with a smile, propping himself back on his arms, his whole slim body and face on full display now.
God, was he good-looking.
Easily passing the physical border of the glass again, the crane crashed into Gentry’s wristcomm, dutifully delivering the message and betraying her tactical position at the same time. An amused kind of surprise showed on the young man’s face and he waved at her to show that she had been exposed. She waved back, trying to look nonchalant but probably failing miserably.
Very smooth, G, way to go.
The message read, “Is a flower only good for looking at? Not this one.”
Oooh, this boy was playing with fire!
“Hey, G,” Sereen nudged. “Have you finished reading?”
“Mm? Oh, yeah.” Gentry lied easily. She had skimmed the first couple of paragraphs and was sure she’d be able to come up with something if asked.
“Done everybody?” the deep gentle voice called from the holoboard and G’s attention snapped back to the dignified face.
The class murmured affirmatively.
“I’m sorry today’s lecture isn’t as fun as usual,” he admitted. “I must say I’m still unsure how to approach such complex topic as this one. But with your help, I hope we’ll figure it out.”
Everyone seemed to perk up.
“You just read an extract on paradoxes,” Q went on. “And you might be wondering why we are raising a philosophical topic on a rational thinking course.”
“There you go,” Sereen whispered. “He’s back to normal!”
G humphed. This did seem interesting. Was it a good idea to read the extract after all?
Q continued, “In the text, you might have encountered the definition of a paradox. Would anyone explain it with their own words?”
A raised hand and the lecturer’s nod brought some courageous soul to their feet.
“It’s when you start with the correct premises, use consistent logic but wind up with an impossible conclusion,” they said. “There are three types: falsidical, veridical and antimony-type, which are...”
“Correct,” Q smiled and nodded the person back down. It was a smile worth starting a thousand wars over.
“Now there’s a reason why I asked you to read about them. Why do you think people have been fascinated with paradoxes for such a long time?”
S raised her hand and received a kind invitation.
“I might be wrong,” she said. “But it seems that they point at the limitations of our thinking, things that seem rational but in fact aren’t. We feel that with our all-conquering logic we can solve any puzzle but it’s not always the case. Right?”
“This is very insightful,” the teacher confirmed. “It is believed by many that what’s rational is true and therefore what rationality cannot explain must be false.”
“I definitely know someone who would die on that hill,” Gentry grumbled under her breath.
“I’m sorry?” Q asked. “Is there something you wanted to add... sorry, I don’t know your name?”
Still half mad with professor Poe, Gentry stood up. “It’s G, I’m a Newcomer. I was saying how a human mind can fool itself into thinking it knows what it looks at as long as it makes sense. But in reality, it’s not there, like the sky.”
That was the only thing she remembered from that last lecture! She felt the tips of her ears heat up but the kind and considering look on Q’s face showed her gamble paid off.
“These are very insightful observations, G, why don’t we try exploring them together?” — he waived her to sit down and turned back to the class — “Five minutes to discuss how paradoxes might reveal the weaknesses of rational thinking. Send your answers to the board when you’re done.”
“Whoa, daring as usual,” Sereen smiled. “I knew you’d enjoy his class.”
“Now, consider these two questions,” Q said to another student who stood up at his hand wave. “If an unstoppable force meets an indestructible object, what is going to happen?”
The person seemed to contemplate it for a while and the teacher didn’t rush him.
“Isn’t it one of those which are impossible to solve because the existence of the one automatically disproves the existence of the other?”
Q nodded, “Correct. The second one about the barber in a small town is of the same sort. Sereen?”
S stood up too, “The one that shaves all and only men that don’t shave themselves?”
“Yes,” he confirmed. “At first, a premise like this seems perfectly reasonable, doesn’t it?”
“It does,” S responded, somewhat rashly. “But it’s clear that a barber like this cannot exist.”
“Wait, really?” Gentry whispered as Q nodded in satisfaction and urged her friend to go on.
“Yes, if we ask ourselves if this barber shaves himself. If he doesn’t, then he is part of the group which he does shave that do not shave themselves, but if he is in this group, then he does shave himself which makes it impossible for him to be this barber by definition.”
While the rest of the class was catching up with the logic, Q’s smile got only wider, more inviting.
“What does it tell us about the nature of the premise then?” he asked.
“That although it seems that it sounds logical on the surface, it is in fact nonsense and we don’t even need to hear the rest of the riddle to discard it completely,” S concluded.
The man chuckled.
“Well, I wouldn’t be that brash, to be honest, but on balance, you’re right,” he said. “If you stay after the lecture, I might recommend a couple of books on the topic. Your Newcomer friend is welcome to stay, too.”
G put up the best of the aloof fronts, “I’d be happy to, Professor.”
“Q is fine,” he smiled again and went on addressing the rest of the class that immediately exploded into a heated discussion.
***
“Basically, what I think we’re supposed to learn from this,” S concluded after a while, standing up so that everyone could hear her. “Is that before applying rationality, we have to make sure that all the premises we are dealing with are in fact realistic. Otherwise, there is no way rational thinking will help us.”
“Excellently put, as always,” Q applauded. “I’d love to see if everyone agrees or has something else to add to the discussion but our time is up. Feel free to write me a letter with your reflections on the topic.”
As interesting as the class was, the urge to leave the premises as soon as the teacher dismissed everyone seemed to be universal and applicable even to the Ashtapadans.
“I have to go now,” Sereen said. “Text you later, ok?” And with a reciprocal nod to Q, disappeared in the doors, joining the rest of the students.
Sadly, she couldn’t recall what they were talking about after the lecture, nor what titles Professor recommended for some home reading. She just hoped she didn’t make a fool of herself.
What Gentry did remember though was that after Q left as well and she came up to the panoramic window, Sereen and the mysterious flower boy were leaving the garden together. And it was hard not to notice that her new friend took off her wristcomm before they took off, and hid it in the tall grass.

Introduction to Cost-Effective Junk Removal

When it comes to managing junk removal in a cost-effective manner, individuals are often seeking affordable solutions to alleviate the financial burden associated with waste disposal. It is crucial to explore options that not only fit within one's budget but also contribute to maintaining clean and sustainable living spaces. The rise of DIY and budget-friendly junk removal methods reflects a growing trend towards practical and economical waste management strategies.
For example, imagine a scenario where a homeowner in California needs to dispose of old furniture without spending excessively. By delving into various cost-effective junk removal options, such as recycling, donation, or leveraging local pickup services, individuals can efficiently declutter their space while minimizing expenses. This sets the stage for understanding how cost-effective approaches to junk removal can benefit both individuals and the environment.
Cost-effective junk removal options are not only about saving money but also about making a positive impact on the environment. By choosing sustainable methods of waste disposal, individuals can contribute to reducing landfill waste and promoting a cleaner ecosystem. The shift towards affordable and eco-friendly junk removal practices signifies a broader movement towards responsible waste management in today's society. By incorporating sustainability into cost-effective solutions, individuals can achieve a harmonious balance between financial savings and environmental consciousness.

Understanding the Costs of Junk Removal Services

Local junk removal companies play a significant role in offering upfront pricing and estimates to customers, providing insights into the potential costs involved in waste removal. Additionally, some providers may incentivize cost savings by offering discounts for regular or bulk pickups, making their services more appealing to budget-conscious individuals. The variability in pricing structures for junk removal services emphasizes the importance of comparing quotes and services to identify the most cost-effective option that aligns with one's specific needs.
To illustrate, consider a situation where a homeowner needs to clear out a garage filled with bulky items. By obtaining estimates from different junk removal services and understanding the factors that influence pricing, such as the type and volume of items to be removed, individuals can make informed decisions that prioritize both affordability and quality of service. This proactive approach empowers customers to navigate the junk removal process with financial prudence in mind.
DIY junk removal not only offers cost-effective solutions but also empowers individuals to take control of their waste management efforts. By utilizing reusable packaging materials and implementing proper planning strategies, individuals can streamline the junk removal process, saving both time and money. Online tutorials and guides serve as valuable resources, providing step-by-step instructions for safe and efficient DIY junk removal methods that can be easily implemented by homeowners looking to reduce expenses.

DIY Junk Removal: A Cost-Effective Approach

Engaging in do-it-yourself junk removal presents numerous benefits beyond just cost savings. In addition to reducing expenses, DIY methods allow individuals to customize their waste disposal process according to their preferences and schedules. By incorporating innovative techniques and creative solutions, homeowners can transform junk removal into a rewarding and fulfilling experience that aligns with their unique needs and priorities.
For instance, imagine a homeowner who decides to repurpose old furniture instead of discarding it during a DIY junk removal project. By refurbishing and upcycling items, they not only save on disposal costs but also contribute to reducing waste and promoting sustainability. This hands-on approach to junk removal not only fosters a sense of accomplishment but also instills a deeper appreciation for the value of reusing and repurposing items in a resource-conscious manner.

Leveraging Local Bulk Pickup Services

Local municipalities often provide bulk pickup services as a cost-effective solution for residents looking to dispose of large items. These services, which are typically offered at little to no additional cost, enable individuals to declutter their spaces without incurring significant expenses. By taking advantage of these community-based initiatives, homeowners can access a convenient and budget-friendly option for junk removal.
Collaborating with neighbors or community groups for joint bulk pickups can further enhance the cost-effectiveness of this approach. By coordinating efforts and sharing resources, individuals can collectively reduce the overall expenses associated with waste disposal while fostering a sense of community engagement and collaboration. This cooperative approach not only benefits participants financially but also promotes a spirit of camaraderie and mutual support in managing junk removal tasks.

Recycling and Donation: Save Money and the Environment

The practice of donating and recycling items offers a dual benefit of cost savings and environmental conservation. By donating gently used items to charitable organizations or recycling centers, individuals can contribute to charitable causes and reduce the amount of waste destined for landfills. The cost-effectiveness of this approach lies in the potential for tax deductions, free pickup services, and the satisfaction of knowing that items are being repurposed or recycled for a greater purpose.
Moreover, recycling centers play a crucial role in incentivizing recycling efforts by offering financial incentives for certain types of recyclable materials. Individuals can capitalize on these incentives by segregating and disposing of recyclable items responsibly, thereby reducing their overall junk removal expenses. The financial rewards associated with recycling not only offset disposal costs but also encourage individuals to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both their wallets and the environment.

Comparison of Professional Junk Removal Services

Professional junk removal services offer a range of benefits that extend beyond mere waste disposal. By opting for professional services, individuals can access comprehensive solutions that include junk removal, cleaning, and post-removal tidying up. These bundled services not only save time and effort for customers but also ensure a thorough and efficient junk removal process that meets high standards of cleanliness and organization.
For example, consider a scenario where a homeowner hires a professional junk removal service that partners with recycling facilities. By leveraging these partnerships, the service provider can minimize disposal costs by diverting a significant portion of collected items for recycling. This eco-friendly approach not only reduces environmental impact but also contributes to sustainable waste management practices that benefit both customers and the community at large. By choosing professional services with a focus on recycling and sustainability, individuals can align their junk removal efforts with broader environmental goals.

The Role of Junk Removal Companies in Sustainability

Junk removal companies play a pivotal role in promoting sustainability through their operations and initiatives. By collaborating with local recycling centers and adopting eco-friendly disposal methods, these companies contribute to reducing landfill waste and minimizing environmental harm. The emphasis on responsible disposal practices underscores a commitment to sustainable waste management that goes beyond mere service provision.
For instance, Junk Under Junk, a leading junk removal service, actively engages in community outreach programs to educate and raise awareness about environmental stewardship. Through these efforts, the company not only fulfills its commitment to social responsibility but also inspires customers to make environmentally conscious choices in their junk removal activities [Customer Product Context]. By choosing companies like Junk Under Junk that prioritize sustainability, individuals can align their waste management practices with ethical and eco-friendly principles.

Special Offers and Deals on Junk Removal

In addition to standard services, junk removal companies often provide special offers and deals that can further enhance cost-effectiveness. Referral discounts, seasonal promotions, and loyalty programs are common incentives offered by these companies to attract and retain customers. By taking advantage of these cost-saving opportunities, individuals can optimize their junk removal experience and enjoy additional benefits beyond the basic service offerings.
To illustrate, imagine a scenario where a homeowner receives a referral discount for recommending a junk removal service to a friend. By leveraging this discount, both the existing customer and the referred individual benefit from reduced rates, creating a win-win situation for all parties involved. Seasonal promotions, such as spring cleaning specials, offer another avenue for customers to save on junk removal costs while decluttering their spaces efficiently. By staying informed about these special offers and deals, individuals can make informed decisions that maximize savings and value for their junk removal needs.

How Technology is Changing Junk Removal

Advancements in technology are reshaping the landscape of junk removal services, introducing new efficiencies and conveniences for customers. 2024.05.21 22:00 devsfan1830 Nest Hello vs the current Wired Nest Doorbell

My Nest Hello, while still working great for the most part is looking rough after years on constant sun exposure. Whatever clear plastic is on the front is flaking off more and more. Had it happen with my first Hello, Google replaced it as a courtesy as it was just past warranty. But now its happening again. The new current cam is appealing due to its matte white housing. So I suspect it may stand up better as it would reflect more of the direct sunlight, just not sure about the differences in sensor specs. On paper the new one is a downgrade but I'm not sure if id even notice. The loss of the Nest app isn't a concern. I'm already stuck between 2 apps when my 1st gen indoor got the switch to the Home app which, as side note, its strange to me STILL hasn't happened for the Hello. Anyways, if anyone who did a similar swap could chime in with their experience I'd appreciate it. Maybe I wait for a possible 3rd gen? I also flirted with the idea of a self hosted solution, but not really there just yet. I'd be looking at needing a significant NAS capacity upgrade if I did that. Or maybe I just swap back to a dumb doorbell and get an actual Nest outdoor.

2024.05.21 21:57 ExpNaive 26 and 1

Would like to share my analysis on "Dvadtsat Shest i Odna" by Maxim Gorky It's not exactly philosophical but one can have an interpretation. The story's pretty intriguing, melancholic, anticipatory and ends on a sort of cliffhanger. It deals with a lot of emotions expressed in a disoriented manner. For example, it gives us a little glimpse about the human psyche when it's on the edge. Tanya, a 16 year old is basically just like a typical 16 year old. Chill, happy, joyful and lovely. At this age girls are obviously, looking for company and enjoy social interactions which may include fun or love. This is not explicitly clear in the text. However, the way the author, tells us that the soldier might corrupt her. Yeah, to some extent that is corruption though, like a 16 year old falling for a soldier. There are many quotes from the story, which explore countless ideas of human psychology. The ending was the best though. Going deep In the beginning the cellar is portrayed as unfit and quite miserable to work in. The Russians serving penal servitude there are equally miserable. They make kringles there. The term "sun" is used quite accurately as a metaphor here for Tanya, a 16 year old girl who visits the prisoners daily for the kringles, and is the complete opposite of them, psychologically. She's joyful and happy while they're miserable and wretched. She's free while they're victims of penal servitude. She was the only reason for happiness in their lives, and initially and perhaps almost till the end they cared for her and genuinely loved her. Now this is quite interesting, for it's relatable and quite common where a girl's the only reason for happiness in a guy's life. Maybe it's because in her presence he feels genuinely happy. This "idol of bliss" need not necessarily be a girl, it could be anything or anyone maybe, a hobby or skill, a close friend or a family member. However in the story, the prisoners regarding Tanya as an idol, possibly because she's the only one who cares to visit them. The prisoners also show their concern for her by telling her to be careful on the stairs and not lift heavy bundles of wood. As discussed earlier, they're complete opposites. As Jung writes "The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed" With this regard, the girl's presence makes them happy while they do not significantly impact the girl's psyche initially or through most of the story. However, in the end when they curse at her and humiliate her, for her natural instinct to fall in love, she's startled and becomes dismal just like the prisoners and it did have a significant impact on her psyche. So overall maybe for a short duration, both the personalities or more correctly emotions or psyche (I'm using these terms idiosyncratically) of the girl and the 26 prisoners changed. Usually the prisoners didn't get offended by some of the girl's actions which some might deem rude. However, in the end when they lost the bet. They basically lost her, and that event of "losing her" made them lose their minds. The soldier is basically a pivotal character or more precisely a catalyst. His character also conveys some valuable insights on subjects like ego, pride and monomania. His seductive vanity might be akin to the influence of Western culture over Russia's underdeveloped society at that time. Another interesting thing here, the story also portrays "flawed assumptions" for the prisoners assumed or anticipated Tanya to be pure merely on the basis of her behaviour towards them, which was of course for a brief duration. As Boorstin writes "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge." This can very well be related to life, for what we merely assume, most of the time isn't the case. We tend to see the world with flawed perceptions and in this story the flawed perception metamorphose into it's most dangerous form ie. a flawed perspective.
This analysis is more inclined towards a psychological perspective. However there can be theological and historical interpretations as well.
In Freudian terms, the story can be interpreted through various aspects of Freud's psychoanalytic theory:
Id, Ego, and Superego: The characters in the story can represent these three components of the psyche. The prisoners, driven by their basic desires and instincts (id), find solace and happiness in Tanya's presence, representing their longing for pleasure. Tanya, as the object of their desire, could symbolize the fulfillment of their unconscious wishes. The soldiers, on the other hand, might embody the superego, enforcing societal norms and rules upon the prisoners.
Sexuality and Repression: Tanya's role as the object of desire for the prisoners reflects Freud's concepts of sexuality and repression. The prisoners' repressed desires and frustrations manifest in their idealization of Tanya, projecting their unconscious wishes onto her. Tanya's youthfulness and innocence could symbolize their repressed longing for freedom and happiness.
Defense Mechanisms: The prisoners' behavior towards Tanya, initially adoring and protective but later turning hostile, could illustrate Freudian defense mechanisms such as displacement and projection. Their anger towards Tanya when she displays natural affection towards the soldier might stem from their own repressed desires and frustrations, projected onto her as a defense mechanism to protect their egos.
Oedipal Complex: The soldiers' reactions to Tanya's interactions with the soldier could be interpreted through the lens of the Oedipal complex. They view her as an object of desire and simultaneously a threat to their own desires, symbolizing the conflict between their unconscious wishes and societal norms.
Guys, if there are any inaccuracies in this. DON'T HESITATE TO CORRECT ME

2024.05.21 21:33 Ausooj Critical Examination of the "Bedouins Tall Building" Prophecy

Hello once again :D
This is just a topic that has been sometime now in my mind to asses. So here is refutation of this claimed prophecy, and i might not take the "traditional" aproach to it. But i still try to show how ambigous and general the claimed prophecy is.
CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE “BEDOUINS TALL BUILDING” PROPHECY
Introduction:
The prophecy attributed to the Prophet Muhammad concerning the construction of towering edifices often interpreted with a focus on contemporary urbanization trends, particularly in the Arabian Peninsula. This critical examination delves into the historical context, socio-economic analysis, and academic perspectives to highlight several weaknesses and inconsistencies in interpreting this as an legit prophecy.
Historical Context and Interpretation:
The hadith frequently cited in this context is found in Sahih Muslim, where it is reported that the Prophet Muhammad said: "You shall see the barefoot, naked, destitute herdsmen competing in constructing tall buildings" [1]. Scholars and believers have linked this prophecy to the rapid urbanization and economic growth of traditionally nomadic societies, like those in the Arabian Peninsula, citing cities such as Dubai and Riyadh with their iconic skyscrapers.
However, it is crucial to understand the context of this hadith. The reference to "barefoot, naked, destitute herdsmen" indicates a dramatic socio-economic transformation rather than merely an architectural trend. Historically, the Arabian Peninsula has experienced numerous cycles of wealth and poverty. The Nabateans, for example, built monumental structures like Petra long before the advent of Islam [2] . Thus, the construction of tall buildings can be seen as part of a broader historical pattern rather than a unique or unprecedented event.
Ambiguity and Vagueness:
One significant issue with using the prophecy of tall buildings is its inherent ambiguity. Tall buildings, defined by their vertical prominence, have existed throughout history. The ancient Egyptians constructed the Pyramids, the Romans built towering structures like the Colosseum, and medieval Europe saw the rise of cathedrals with soaring spires. Each of these could have been interpreted as "tall buildings" in their respective eras.
Moreover, the phrase "competing in constructing tall buildings" is subjective and lacks specificity. While modern skyscrapers indeed represent a competition for height, the human ambition to build higher has been a constant for millennia, driven by technological advancements and urban planning needs rather than a divine signal. Historian Lynn White, Jr. noted that the drive to construct monumental buildings is a universal phenomenon found across various civilizations throughout history [3]. This suggests that the desire to build tall structures is an inherent aspect of human societies rather than a prophetic fulfillment.
Technological and Economic Factors:
The development of tall buildings in contemporary times is primarily driven by technological progress and economic factors. Advances in engineering and materials science have made constructing skyscrapers feasible and cost-effective. Urbanization, population growth, and limited land availability in cities necessitate building upwards to maximize space. These factors are rooted in practical human needs and capabilities, not necessarily in fulfilling a prophecy.
Additionally, globalization has led to significant investments in urban infrastructure worldwide. Cities strive to build iconic structures as symbols of economic power and modernity. This global trend is motivated by economic competition and urban development strategies rather than prophetic fulfillment. Economist Edward Glaeser argues that skyscrapers are a natural result of economic incentives and the need for efficient land use in urban centers [4] .
Prophecy and Self-Fulfilling Nature:
Another critical aspect to consider is the self-fulfilling nature of prophecies. When a prophecy is widely known, it can influence people's actions and decisions. In the case of the tall buildings prophecy, awareness of the hadith could subconsciously or consciously motivate individuals in the Muslim world to engage in constructing tall buildings as a means of economic and social progress. This creates a circular logic where the prophecy appears to be fulfilled simply because people are aware of it and act accordingly.
Theological and Scholarly Perspectives:
Islamic scholars have varied interpretations of prophecies, often emphasizing metaphorical or moral lessons over literal predictions. Prominent Islamic scholar Ibn Khaldun, in his seminal work "Muqaddimah," stressed the importance of understanding the socio-political context of prophetic traditions and cautioned against overly literal interpretations [5]. His insights suggest that such prophecies should be viewed within the broader tapestry of human history and development. Certainly, here is an expanded discussion on the perspectives of scholars regarding the tall buildings prophecy, incorporating various theological and scholarly viewpoints.
Also modern Islamic scholars continue to debate the significance of the tall buildings prophecy. For instance, Dr. Yasir Qadhi, a prominent Islamic scholar, has discussed the prophecy in his lectures, highlighting that it is part of a larger set of signs meant to convey moral and ethical lessons rather than precise future events. He emphasizes that these prophecies should inspire Muslims to reflect on their spiritual state and societal responsibilities rather than to fixate on specific architectural developments [7].
Sociological Implications:
The sociological implications of prophecies, particularly those related to urban development, are profound. The construction of tall buildings in the modern era is closely tied to national pride, economic development, and globalization. Sociologist Saskia Sassen, in her research on global cities, points out that skyscrapers often serve as symbols of a city's status and economic power [6] . This perspective underscores the idea that the proliferation of tall buildings is more about human ambition and progress than fulfilling a divine prophecy.
Additionally, emphasizing tall buildings as a prophecy can have socio-political ramifications. It may influence policy decisions and urban planning in Muslim-majority countries, potentially diverting resources from more pressing social and economic issues. This focus on eschatological signs can also affect public sentiment and behavior, leading to fatalism or a sense of inevitability about the future, which can hinder proactive efforts to address contemporary challenges.
Conclusion:
When scrutinized critically and through an academic lens, the tall building's prophecy reveals significant ambiguities and lacks a concrete basis for being considered a legitimate prophecy.
Historical context, the subjective nature of what constitutes a "tall building," and the technological and economic motivations behind skyscraper construction undermine its reliability as a legit and non-self fulfilling prophecy. Instead, the proliferation of tall buildings should be viewed through the lens of human progress, technological advancements, and urban development, rather than as a prophetic prediction that lacks objective basing.
By examining the prophecy through historical, sociological, and theological perspectives, it becomes clear that the construction of tall buildings is a complex phenomenon influenced by numerous factors beyond the scope of a singular prophetic tradition.

2024.05.21 21:25 SpinachAcceptable185 Love Letter to an Ex

Context, last year I was head over heels for a girl who put little to no effort into the relationship in return, I was conflicted by her actions and our experiences all the while i was reading 1984 by George Orwell. I wrote this at a desk in a school hallway in isolation.
Genre: General essay?
14.5.24
To my love,
I’m stuck sitting in isolation with absolutely nothing to do. I’ve crammed so much of 1984 into my head that I’ll need to push some of it out. 1984 is a lot to read. Maybe it’s the way I read it or maybe it’s the pacing but sometimes I'll be reading it and find myself relating to it in a way. A quote stuck with me;”He pulled her round so that they were breast to breast; her body seemed to melt into his.” It reminded me of way back in the abandoned Asda stairwell when I melted into her- semi-conflicted between love and lust. After the stairwell got closed off; I felt as though I had lost a part of me too. I even found another stairwell but I knew it wouldn't be the same. It would feel forced, like how I turned her into me so that we could face each other. Sure it wasn’t with the intention of making out but it wasn't thought through first- almost impulsively. In1984, a couple pages later, it speaks about the kisses turning hard; unlike the smooth, butter-like melt they were before. I can feel that. It’s almost vivid. I feel as though after the thing with Austin, everything kinda crashed. When [NAME] had red hair, it was almost like she was infatuated with me. When she dyed it back to normal, I felt as if I had lost that. I could be delusional but when she said she hated who she was with the red hair, it kinda stuck with me. Overall, It’s very on-off. One moment I find myself fantasizing about marriage; the next, I see myself breaking up with her on the horizon. But after that first DM on insta, I promised myself it wouldn’t be a repeat of everyone else, she wouldn’t be a lesson or a test, she would be the practical, the real fucking thing. The one who kept me up at night simply with the thought of her. Is it bad if I relate to WInston? Lost and conflicted within society and using writing and reading as a means of escape. It isn’t necessarily illegal but the stuff I write feels like it could be critiqued in a way that makes it resistant- pushing against the normal methods of writing. Actually, I despise Winston. He let temptation overcome him. Sure, his environment may have dictated him into fantasizing rape but I still think that shit’s inexcusable. He still thinks fondly of it afterwards when having sex as well. Orwell is so fucking good at writing though. How can someone write so vividly that I have to stop, think and reflect upon my life and experiences. I think I’ll show [NAME]this paper. I’m not 100% sure she’ll read it; my feelings tend to be insignificant to her. But if someone wrote something about me, I’d be ever-so-curious to find out their perspectives. I also find it quite funny how Winston blabbers on to Julia about death but she abruptly shuts him up. Maybe that’s why she wanted me to read it (I need to stop yapping about death in situations where it’s uncalled for). When I write this, it’s like I’m texting her but she isn’t texting back. Or it’s like when I say something drunk with the drowsiness of fatigue and she reads it in the morning and that shit doesn’t hit the same AT ALL. I still remember when she was in Nottingham and we called the entire night. A part of me hopes that next time she calls (if she even does) we will get back into the swing of things and we can rebuild that bond. But for it to happen, I need to take a step back and stop being so fucking high maintenance. I’m constantly writing. My head has an endless flowing dialogue of words waiting to be scribed but not all of them do. Sometimes it feels like i feel too much; I feel so much; so much so that it numbs me to feeling. I’m not sure if you can relate but it’s like bubble wrap almost. Pumped up with feeling, any other emotion bounces right off. Or like a mental paracetamol, that kind of numbness. When [NAME] said that paracetamol burns holes in your stomach; I guess that's why when I feel numb, the words pour right out. Mental paracetamol should be a coined term. I feel like Shakespeare when I say that. Actually, right now, I feel like I’m in a void, a medium almost. A confined corner; trapped by the constant sounds of expensive dress shoes slamming against the hallway floors. I hope she reads this. I hope anyone reads this. I am seeking attention even in solitary confinement. I guess it’s inevitable for “just another kid with ADHD''. I think I’d like to write a book for her. Not in a puppy love-esque way; instead to make something she can enjoy. I’d have to binge a fuck -tonne of feminist literature to make it work. I’d have to live, breathe and regurgitate Sylvia Plath just to make something enjoyable for her (I’m kidding of course). (Not really). I’ve written so much- this could probably count as a fucking book. I’m not sure where she would even find the time to read this. She’ll probably lump it alongside the Smint container (filled with poems for her) to read when we break up. I think perspective changes a lot about a book. It’s not entirely how a book is written; instead, it’s about how you approach it or how you are introduced to it. I’ve been very pessimistic and pushy-away-ey recently. Regardless, I won’t cross anything out unless it’s a typo. I think it indirectly shows progression of a character especially when it’s in the form of hypophora almost. I want to write the best book ever and then die and have no-one read it. I think that's more significant than writing a shitty book and campaigning and promoting and all this consumerist bullshit. If you were proud of your work, you wouldn’t promote it, you would let it find its reader. For me, I’d put it in those tiny bird box community libraries that no one uses. Therefore, if someone craved my work, they could find it in a place they wouldn't look for it. Not for my book to gather dust on a tall decorative bookshelf. This is a bit of a rant i know. SOmetimes I’ll yap and let the words flow instead of actively writing them. Writing words is the worst way to write. You need to apply emotion and let the words unravel themselves. At least, that’s how I write, critique it however the fuck you want. I was once told that my writing is like a conversation- you know the ones where the other person keeps blabbering and you can’t get a word in. I don’t read enough to know if it’s unique or not but I know why I do it. It’s like I’m conversing with myself. I might throw a name in there or add some direct address. This might be breaking the fourth wall a bit but i guess the entire nature of this essay is. I need to read over my writing one day- I hate to do it but I think I’d learn a lot about myself if i did so. My writing feels a little bit lost at sea. It’s very jumpy from one topic to the next- like scrolling on tiktok. Also, I think there's a mix of me searching for empathy via slight victimization and undertones of slight narcissism. I’m probably over analyzing but I like my writing. Me personally, i get lost in the labyrinth of the lines and curvature of the letters. Will i regret writing so much? I mean sure, I guess a part of me will live on forever in my writing. But, then again, it’s wasting my life. I’d like to live- living is not writing. Living is not reading. To live is to experience with every sense possible. If I see, I am not living. If i smell, I am not living. But, to hear, to smell, to feel, to see and to taste simultaneously is to live. When living isn’t enough, I can understand why people resort to reading and writing. It’s ever-so-simple. I wish I can see [NAME] soon though. I’ll wish for it at 22:22 if i have to. Or on a shooting star. Or maybe even on a stray eyelash. I miss you[NAME]. I was going to say “I crave you” but that’s too sexual and comes with a million connotations. Saying “I require you” is too formal and needy. I think I should stick to the usual. What if i didnt say “I miss you” but instead I said “I miss your warm and enveloping embrace.” Maybe then she would text back.
This is fucking delusion,
From yours truly,
Raffy

2024.05.21 21:25 thebitchfucker What are some low effort activities or entertainment that keep you stimulated to any degree?

I get this kind of tense brain fog or something, when I want to do something but when I'm bored of making music, playing music, school work, reading, my phone and stuff. I want something new and potentially exciting that I can ACTUALLY do that doesn't make me frustrated but isn't easy in the kind of way that feels patronising or in vain.
Sometimes I feel like I don't have energy to buy/ask/look for water colour paper for water colour painting which I started in the last week of 2023 but ran of paper so kind of just stopped because 'i'd get paper later'.
Maybe there's just a barrier I need to get used to crossing. For example, I could go on a bus for free to a heritage site for free or something but everything feels like energy for what could be no reward, like I don't have some spark to dominate my own world with miscellaneous achievements and activities but do I have to force the spark to come back?
Hope that made sense and I can bring myself to live my life some more with some suggestions or anecdotes from everyone.

2024.05.21 21:20 OkForce3784 Wanted to share my suicide note to my friend since I backed out

My sister. I love you so very much, and I admire you. Often, I even envy you. I think I care about you more than you care about me, and I feel so protective of you. Yet, frustratingly, I don’t think you really need me. I wish you did need me, and I wish you cared about me more as much as I care about you. That’s not your fault though, don’t think that it is. I don’t wish to give you the wrong idea but I think you’re so beautiful. Not in a sick, twisted way that would end in harm for everyone, but in a way that makes me oddly proud. It’s like I get to know this pretty girl and be her close friend while most don’t. You’ve always supported me, and you can make me smile when nobody else can. There are so many examples of this. You totally change the trajectory of my day so often. That’s not irregular either. A lot of the time the best part of my day was seeing you, talking to you, sometimes even just being around you. I am not drawn to you or attracted to you, let me plainly state that clearly. I feel I shouldn’t have to say that, but frustratingly I feel like the thought crosses my mind sometimes and I want to affirm that. There’s nothing wrong with you, I just see you as my sister, and you’re taken, and I need to be single. So, triple threat on that one. I feel as if the only reason I think that way sometimes is because I’m so deeply lonely and I cling on to you because I just want feminine affirmation I think. Or perhaps just normal affirmation. It’s quite difficult to analyze yourself sometimes. One day you’ll make a great wife and I wish I could be there to see it. If my Father permits me, I’ll watch from above. Or perhaps from below if I’ve made some theological mistake and salvation is different from what we think. Sister, you’re so precious to me and I wish I knew how to express the way I love you, and how deeply. In my time alive there was nothing I wouldn’t do for you. The reason for my death, in case you’re wondering, is simple. Justice. I cannot stand to think I am getting away with my depravity with no punishment. Jesus suffering in my stead has one flaw, that I don’t suffer for it. Is it truly justice if I don’t suffer? The punishment is imputed onto another and thus is unjust. That’s one part of it, but it’s also because I’m just so pathetic and can’t stand firm. I want to be strong but I am intrinsically weak. I try to lean on Him for strength but that requires that I seek him which I so often fail to do. I get caught in a loop of maybe seeking him for a little while, but eventually growing exhausted from the weight of following him and crashing into slothfulness. I don’t know why Jesus said his burden was light, it maybe be light to hold, but holding even a feather will weight you down after enough time. I also know that I’m not really a man. I’m so pathetic, in ways you will never see. So deeply depraved in ways you’ll never see. I want to be good, but I feel like I’ve seen the devil. I am the devil. The reflection I see fills me with wrath, the one who has created all of my problems. The face of whom, by his complacency has mucked his hair with the blood of those he could’ve helped. An antichrist. A monster. The enemy. Me. What a sickening naivety I have to think I could ever be excellent, or worthy. I have failed, sister. Even now I question if I was a good brother. Be honest with yourself and reflect. Was I a good brother, Torri? I love you sister. My best friend. Wise and sharp and diligent and driven. How I ache to know this may hurt you. I was supposed to protect you from pain but I fear this may cause it. Or perhaps you will be indifferent. Either way, by my death I will either be in paradise or my damnation will serve to extol God’s glory by illustrating his perfect justice forever. Love Him foremost.

2024.05.21 21:19 add_ryana_plus Art class vent :'D

Is it wrong for me to be upset of my drawing got erased?
It was free drawing time in art class. Im not used to draw with mouse, but i drew a really small drawing of my oc in the corner. It wasn't the best drawing. But i was so proud of it bc i thought it so cute. Basically i put a lot of effort. Then someone erased it and give me ":3". I was so upset i said it in chat TvT.
(If u feel like u need some other example: I usually draw with pencil on paper. But 1 day i decided to draw using paint instead. But right after i finish my drawing, someone came up to me, took my drawing and rip it apart and just smile to me; That's how i felt when they did that)
I'm so upset i decided to vent here. Also I didn't take pic or anything. Sorry for random post. ^ ^

2024.05.21 21:17 OkForce3784 Suicide Note to my dear friend. I backed out of it.

I am a young male and wrote this to my dear friend recently before backing out of suicide.
2024.05.21 21:15 Makoleido Day 1: TIL basic strings (Python)

Day 1: 21st May 2024
Hi all! Sub lurker here. Thought I'd finally tip my toes in and post for a change. I'm committing to learning something new every day, with an emphasis on practical skills rather than odd informational tidbits. I'm particularly keen to improve my linguistic skills (Mandarin Chinese and Italian) and to finally - albeit slowly - get comfortable with Python. Each day, I'll summarise what I've learned and will include resources used in a Reddit post here.

What I Learned

Topic: Basic strings in Python (for textual data)

How I Learned

Reflection

Thanks for reading! Feel free to comment or share your thoughts. Let’s keep learning every day!
TL;DR: Learning something new every day. Will post here at the end of every day highlighting what, along with all resources used. Whilst not strictly so, I'm going to incorporate a good amount of programming (Python etc) and improving my language skills (Italian and Chinese).

2024.05.21 21:06 Asianati Hoping to Answer Common OCS Questions (Requirements, Advice, Additional Items to Get, What to Expect)

Hi Ya'll,
I recently graduated OCS and I have been bombarded myself in real life over what to expect with OCS. For context I went from basic training straight to OCS, and even graduated with honors. From the time of writing this post, it has officially been a month since I graduated. So here is a list of common questions I get and I hope I can settle some anxiety for all of you future 2nd LTs.
Warning: The cadre at OCS do read these reddit posts, so I won't be able to post answers to tests or events.
  1. I haven't received a welcome letter, or a packing list. Where can I find it?
    • Fort Moore Officer Candidate School (army.mil) I would download and print the packing list and the ISAP. The ISAP acts more or less like a syllabus from college. It will give a rough understanding of the rules, regulations, and requirements for you to pass.
  2. Is everything on the packing list required?
    • Yes. Try your best to follow the packing list to the letter. It is almost entirely dependent on the cadre and of course weather does play a part in their decision making. Some things you'll find you didn't really need or use throughout your cycle. For example, my cycle didn't use 550 Cord almost at all, but I used it to build a hooch, and secure sensitive items.
  3. What if I don't have of the required equipment on the packing list?
    • When it comes to military equipment, try your best and bring what you can. I was never issued an IFAK before OCS or after. The cadre understand they have some coming from basic and those in-service. So if you have it, bring it. If not, bring it up to your cadre and they'll schedule time to get it issued to you.
  4. Anything not on the packing list you recommend?
    • I would recommend the following: hand soap, bathroom spray, travel vacuum, wet-wipes, clipboard with compartment, pillow, very bright headlamp, multitool, and laminator. Hand soap because for some reason OCS had a hard time procuring it. Travel vacuum because you'll likely have 2 or 3 vacuums available to your platoon and having your own saves time. Wet-wipes to dust everything down. Clipboard with compartment for Land Nav as you'll be running with maps, marker, protractor, and your points so its best to have something safe and secure. Laminator for your papers because its Georgia and your papers can get wet. The pillows at OCS have this weird plastic cover on so if you want a better night sleep, get a better pillow. The headlamp is just in case, some classes inform the lumen limit while others don't, Land Nav is DARK so if you can find a lighthouse out there, do it. The multitool is just useful to have especially if you are out in the field.
  5. Where can I find somethings on the packing list I am missing?
  6. I saw you can bring your laptops? Is it required for classes? Can I opted in for a tablet or iPad?
    • You can bring a personal laptop primarily for recreational use after the duty hours. OCS will provide you with a government laptop that you'll need to use your CAC to access. Tablets and iPads are not considered laptops and will be confiscated like a phone. If the majority of your class as issues with the laptops, then the cadre may allow the use of your personal laptops.
  7. What is your day-to-day look like?
    • Mostly on a non-physical or FTX event coming up you'll follow the following schedule: 0500 - wake up. First formation is at 0600, then you conduct PT until breakfast. After breakfast you will head to the classroom and stay there until lunch, return and stay there until dinner. After dinner, it will be the end of the duty hours and you'll roughly have 2 hours for personal time.
  8. What are the most important categories/test to focus on?
    • Treat everything important. Every test you do not pass can put you at risk of being recycled, and it is up to you to catch up. For example while everyone is studying for tactics, you'll be studying tactics and history if you failed history. So save yourself the hassle and take every test seriously. The big 3 recycle event have been historically, Army History (70% to pass), Land Nav (4 points or more to pass (day and night)), and the 4-mile run (need to run in under 36 minutes regardless of gender).
  9. How many retests or chances do you get?
    • You get 2 tries at everything before recycle. You get 2 tries again at the same test then you can be dismissed. For example: You are part of Alpha company. You failed history twice. You get recycled into Bravo company. You failed history twice again. You can be dismissed.
    • If you happen to pass history but fail Land Nav twice, then you'll be recycled into Charlie. If you fail Land Nav twice then you can be dismissed.
  10. What is a recycle? What does it look like in OCS? Can you get dismissed?
    • A recycle is when you failed something twice and you get "recycled" into the next class. A recycle can occur for other reasons such as illness or injury. You can also be recycled for improper behavior or being "peered out". Every class starts up in a like a month (I heard they are changing that for even further out). So even though the cycle takes about 12 weeks to complete, if you get recycled you can expect more like 16 weeks or more. We had someone at OCS you has been with it for a year. You get recycled for repeat offenses, or do something majorly bad such as breaking the law, then you can be dismissed.
  11. What is being peered out mean?
    • Throughout the cycle you are put into a platoon and then a squad. Your squadmates eventually all sit down and fill out a form to give the cadre who is the weakest link in the squad. Usually squads kick out the person they do not like. We had to kick out one person because they didn't mesh well within the squad and wasn't very kind. He would then get replaced with someone else who got peered out. Luckily after that one person got kicked out, the squad improved and we tried our hardest to keep it together. We still needed to peer someone out, but we kept tabs with them and invited them to a lot of our squad functions nonetheless as my squads grew to love and respect each other as a family.
    • If you do get peered out, unfortunately you get a spot report, moved to a different squad, and are at risk of being recycled if peered out again. Stay humble and help out whenever you can. I got the most respect from my squadmates as I stayed up late with them to help them with their STX lanes.
  12. What is personal time like?
    • You essentially use personal time to workout if the PT wasn't enough, clean yourself, and prepare for bed. Yes if you have time, you can contact family and friends (when you get your phones), and if you have the time, play games. I don't recommend playing games as it distracts you from the mission of graduating.
  13. What are the different phases like?
    • You are separated into 3 phases. Black, Blue, and White. You immediately enter black phase upon arrival with a traditional called "Gold to Black". Which is more or less a physical smoking session. During Black you are expected to run everywhere, not be able to drink coffee, have your phone confiscated (and given back on Sunday), and have less personnel time. Blue you get the ability to drink coffee again, and you have your phones returned and used only during personal time. During blue you get the ability to visit and explore the base (Fort Moore) and shop around. During white phase you get the ability to explore off-base (Columbus) and you get to wear civilian clothes. White phase if you leave off-post, you need to be in uniform, and on-base you can be in civilians.
  14. Can you use your personal vehicle?
    • Yes, but you can only drive it during White Phase
  15. How can I keep in contact with my family during black phase?
    • I recommend that you download WhatsApp or some other social media on your laptop and have your family members on it.
  16. Can I visit the gym on base?
    • Yes during blue phase you can visit the gym. Rule regulates that you leave the footprint in uniform and change into appropriate PT uniform once at the gym and conducting PT.
  17. What is the DFAC like?
    • The DFAC is better than basic training and offers snacks like cookies, granola bars, ice cream, and soda. They have a salad bar and the usual cycle of foods. They do have a "short-order" line which serves fries, burgers, hot dogs, etc. To stay in physical shape, I recommend eating your fruits and a side salad every meal. Drink juice, Gatorade, or water only. I only drank soda and the burger after an intense physical requirement like a long-run or a ruck march to regain my glucose and caloric levels.
  18. Does Amazon deliver there?
    • Yes you can have other things delivered to the footprint. However, the Cadre are going to inspect it for food and other contraband. Just ask the cadre for the delivery address. It may take like 2 weeks for them to deliver it.
  19. Any final advice?
    • Be helpful and noticeable amongst your squad but try not to bring attention to yourself from the cadre. Take everything seriously and give yourself proper rest and proper nutrition. OCS is not hard, but it can be if you let it get to you. OCS is designed to test your competency, commitment, and character. I luckily had an amazing squad, and I had a blast with them.
I want this to be an open forum so don't be afraid to leave anymore questions below. If the answer you are seeking is not above, then write the question in the comments, and I will try my best to answer you before you are sent off. Best of luck, thank you for your service, and be the best leaders your soldier's deserve.

2024.05.21 21:03 Erwinblackthorn Brandon Sanderson is Woke

New Flash everyone: the guy who hangs out with Daniel Greene(a pro-fairy rights socialist), is loved by redditors, and got a Hugo award is… woke. Who would have ever seen that coming? But, thanks to Jon Del Arroz making a video about it on May 18th, I am here to repeat the news back to you so there is an easily accessible source as to HOW he’s woke. Everything was revealed back in January 2023, but I want people to understand the implications and narrative that he’s presenting when he says his concerns about fairy rights. By the end of this, you will realize that people calling themselves Christian does not cause them to be immune to wokeness.
In fact, with how Christianity has influenced wokeness into existence, it’s likely a lot of "Christians" are what we can call “first wave wokeness”.
For context, Brandon Sanderson is a Mormon, part of the Latter-Day Saints (LDS). Mormonism is almost exclusively a US issue, and I’ve also noticed that there are a lot of youtubers who tend to be Mormon women(probably because they have other women in the house to do the chores). These people are great with money, big in business, and their church is anti-fairy. A lot of problems the fairy-rights activists have are with Mormon churches, which is strange for Europeans to witness with how open a lot of their churches are, outside of the US. Protestant, evangelical, unitarian, the national church of Denmark, it’s a big list.
But in 2008, Brandon wrote an essay about his Mormon beliefs on how Dumbledore from Harry Potter liked to have wands stirred around in his brown cauldron. His quote:
How does this relate to Dumbledore? I'm not trying to present him as an antagonist or a villain. All I'm saying is that if you believe in the truth of your message, then you shouldn't care if someone decent, respected, and intelligent is depicted as believing differently from yourself. Decent, respected, and intelligent people can be wrong--and you can still respect them. It's okay. That doesn't threaten our points, since we (theoretically) believe that they are eternal and stronger than any argument we could make.
Back in this time, Brandon had only been an author for 3 years, but he won an award for his first published book, Elantris. He was being careful with his words, and his take is considered liberal. He was trying to defend the backlash JK Rowling received for her (poor) choice of virtue signaling and tried to mend this defense with his own religion. Mentioning his religious views is what got him canceled back then, which he later apologized for in 2011:
I cannot be deaf to the pleas of \[fairy\] couples who want important things, such as hospital visitation rights, shared insurance, and custody rights. At the same time, I accept and sustain the leaders of the LDS church. I believe that a prophet of God has said that widespread legislation to approve \[fairy\] marriage will bring pain and suffering to all involved.
He was not backing down from his religion yet. His goal post moved to the legal ramifications of the US, which are separate from his church(remember, church and state, supposed to be separate in the US), but he was still saying his religion wanted him to oppose people calling it a marriage and having it in churches. This was a second “cancellation” that didn’t go very far, mostly because he was able to use religion as an excuse for his take, with the Christian Cake Packed With Fudge Scandal not happening yet(2018).
Fast forward to 2023, after he hangs out with a bunch of woke youtubers, and we get a new quote from Brandon:
The church’s first prophet, Joseph Smith, famously taught, “I teach them correct principles and they govern themselves.” My current beliefs are where I’ve arrived on my journey, as I attempt to show the love that Jesus Christ taught. I look forward to seeing further changes in the church, and I work to make sure I am helping from within it to create a place that is welcoming of \[fairy\] people and ideas. I would love, for example, to see the church recognize \[fairy\] marriage among its members. Both temporally and eternally. I would support ordaining \[tinkerbell\] men to the priesthood. (And would support the ordination of women, though that is another issue.)
That’s interesting. It seems like he made a complete 180 on his stance, claims that he’s always believed this new stance, blames Jesus for this new stance, and then doubles down on this new stance by adding female ordination(becoming a priest and higher) and even Tinkerbells. As time went on, he decided that his religion was totally wrong about fairies, and this 13 year difference means way more than the nearly 200 years Mormonism has been around. I believe a fellow Mormon, Shadversity, would love to have a discussion about how any of this makes sense, but I’m starting to feel that he’s the same way. Who knows if Ethan Van Sciver understands Mormonism as well as Brandon Sanderson does, with how easy it is to manipulate prophecies and reinterpret scripture.
But that’s been the point for a while, right?
Wokeness is here to restructure both historical evidence and even religions, in order to shift cultures and social institutions to obey this progressive change. Words are changed in the dictionary, social “norms” are changed to be updated for a “modern audience”, and postmodernists like Foucault were able to trick college kids into thinking the Greeks were all pixie fairies. Once a critical theorist gets their hands on something with power, their goal is not to keep it as it is. It is to keep it for themselves. This is why you will hear these people say everything is subjective, which is secret code for “Look at me: I’m the captain of reality now.”
But wait, it gets better! Brandon Sanderson continued with:
Back in 2007, I was mostly known only in my community, not to the world at large. The essay, then, was directed at my local community, and was more controversial among them (for being too liberal) than it was controversial to the world at large for being \[fairy\]phobic. That might surprise you, if you’ve read the excerpts that often float around the internet. This was mostly me trying to encourage other members of the church to be more open and welcoming of \[fairy\] characters and ideas.
That said, the essay does display the casual bigotry common to people who (like myself) have lived lives where we haven’t had to deal with some of the issues common to the lives of people suffering discrimination. Many of the assertions (such as my view on \[fairy\] marriage) do not reflect my current stance. After writing it, and interacting with those who found it objectionable–even painful–I came to understand them and their experiences better. Though they did not owe me that honor, they gave it freely.
You see, he's honored to hear about the life of a bug chaser.
Brandon cares deeply about the pain he caused to his wallet… I mean the fairies who saw his essay. He was an award winning author back then, he didn’t know it would be a global thing. It was supposed to be only seen by people in Utah, that’s it. This is what we call: bullshit. The woke rely heavily on gaslighting and pretending they’re ignorant of everything, while telling others that they need to learn and understand EVERYTHING about a subject before they are even able to mention it.
He was already big on reddit, he knew all about his fandom, and he knew about his publisher, Tor. The only thing that really changed is that now he is unable to stick to being liberal and he has to present himself as progressive. Why? Well, the new Amazon deal happened recently, and he’s the writer of the series The Wheel of Time. As if Rings of Power wasn’t evidence enough of how Amazon mistreats their properties, Brandon was forced to erase his own past, like Agent J in Men in Black, burning his own hands in the process.
I’m not surprised that he’s woke or even that Christians are falling to this woke inquisition. When I said first wave wokeness, I would like to clarify why it’s the catalyst for all of this stupidity. Wokeness is not of Christian values, but instead a parasite upon Christianity, in the same way Gnosticism and Satanism would be. When Christianity started to allow new sects, and a lot of these were considered valid, the crazy sex cults of the 60s opened the floodgates for a bunch of crazy reinterpretations. It’s the same way as how there are still circles of Christianity that go for flat earth theory or say that dinosaurs don’t exist, with these people usually at the forefront of the home-schooling movement.
It’s not that home-schooling is bad by itself, it’s that bad people use it to then have the good people using it be wrongfully grouped into the same area, in the same way gun-ownership does. This type of bastardization has always been a problem in the US, due to the lack of authority over what makes something categorized as such a thing, thanks to liberalism allowing the freedom to constantly change things. As time went on, this liberalism changed into progressivism, with the key difference being that liberalism is an allowance of change while progressivism is an enforced change. The liberalism of the 1800s allowed the Confederates to claim Christianity approved of their enslavement of black people, by blaming the story of Ham and using scripture to claim it was okay to enslave certain people for generations. We always see this strange cherry-picking of scripture from fake Christians, and this problem has expanded into the Vatican itself with the current and following generations of Popes.
A lot of times, we’ll hear news about how Christians are under attack, a bakery is targeted to expose discrimination, or even where people claim they were banned from twitch for being Christian. But what they get wrong is that they are in the same circle as liberal and progressive Christianity, their openness created this weakness to tourism, and most Christian circles have been taken over in the US since before the 60s. The south has a culture of being liberal, Mormons have a culture of being liberal, protestants are very liberal, all because the US began as a liberal culture in the form of classical liberalism. The libertarian argument is always used by these liberal groups, that changes into the progressive enforcement, and over the years these liberal people get infected by the virus.
Add money to the mix, and we have ourselves an endless chain of liberal minded people falling to wokeness. The “redemption” narrative, along with original sin, from Christianity is currently its main weakness. The appeal to ignorance is another weakness, with people playing skeptic as a snake slithers through the grass. Christianity isn’t the problem by itself, it’s the naivety that comes from blind faith, which then expands into a contradictory blind faith that people are good inside, only to later wonder why everything is changing for the worse when evil people are put in charge. Fantasy stories have been under attack by the woke for quite a while, long before they tried to appropriate Tolkien with Rings of Power.
The fantasy that is controlled by the woke is an extension to their attack on religion, because to them a fantasy story is no different than a bible. Mythological presentation, symbolic themes, a dream-like world to present morals to follow; the entire thing has been used by Brandon to then have him later claim that he’s always had fairy characters since the beginning. Sure, his religion says fairies are bad, but then he virtue signals by claiming he’s always made fiction about how they’re good. He would never say this if the publishing world made sense and if publishers were the way they were in the 1950s. That is because he would never have to choose between religion and money back then, with money always mattering more to the typical materialist.
I’m sure people will say that I’m being hard on Christians, or that I’m evil for saying this, or even that I am a satanist for noticing. These people would only be angry at the truth being said, which is the opposite of what Christianity teaches. Fantasy writers, like Brandon, have a lot of supporters, with this support merging between the woke and Mormons. So many feel that they need to make sense of their fandom, so they claim their religion is wokeness, converting it into blind Satanism. This is far from the truth and we need to condemn those who focus solely on radical subjectivity.
Especially if they blame God for their stupid takes, like how Brandon does now.

2024.05.21 20:59 Odd-Organization-466 Drowning

So to start this off I just want to say I’m aware I’m in no position to feel the way I’m feeling and that I’m toxic and all of this is very messy. Now for the clarity: Me and my boyfriend have been together for about 3 years now going onto 4. Me and him have been through so much together. The first year we dated he had gotten into an accident that left him in the hospital for 3 months. We spent so many nights together there and there were endless obstacles that we had to face along the way. It was a very stressful time period but well needed as me and him have never been closer since. I (21 F) took care of my boyfriend (23M) for about a year afterwards give or take. I got to learn his personality all his likes and dislikes. I’ve seen all the good and the bad and the cute and gross and vise versa. Our feeling grew a lot quicker for each other too as time went on and as we had to work with his new disabilities. All the more things I fell in love with. His determination And willingness to learn and conquer is very inspiring and a clutch for me. Recently as of a year ago I had my own place for the temporary as I was caring for family and trying to help everyone get back on their feet. Prior to I was living with my boyfriend, it was a big place for just 3 people and an interesting experience to say the least. Over time I needed up taking in my best friend of 6 years. He’s always been in and out of my life as his family has moved often and far. Well his father had kicked him out and next thing I know he’s on my couch. I didn’t want to be the asshole and tell him to leave, as the place I was staying in was not actually mine (I was renting and the homeowner was very strict and nasty and didn’t allow guests as she was renting without papers) so I gave him 3 days. I had 2 teenagers in the house that I was caring for without much help beside my boyfriend helping with rides here and there and thankfully some groceries when I asked. My best friend at the time (we’ll call him S) was very willing to go out of his way to help me. I would come home frome 12 hour shifts and the house would be clean and the fridge stocked. He had a very close relationship with the children and hey really looked up to him. He was more than supportive of my rough situation and went from being a 3 day couch-hopper to a huge supporter in my life and a live in roommate. This went on for a month until we had both gotten drunk one night and ended up hooking up. This is where it gets really messed up. This went on for about a month, helping with the kids, being there for me, and providing, all whist my boyfriend was on vacation. The night me and S hooked up my boyfriend was in the Bahamas on my 21’st birthday. I was upset that day and it was just me and S that hung out at home, which led up to everything. I know it’s not any excuse and I’m still trying to work past all my delusions lol. Sooner than later my boyfriend found out and I had to cut ties with S for the sake of my relationship. It’s been about a year since everything has happened and I am back living with my boyfriend and everyone has gone their separate ways. Throughout this year S has been texting me and reaching out to me on social media. I do still miss him and I hate that everything happened the way it did and all ended with us no longer speaking because he was my best friend for years prior to. I miss not having to not ask for help and I miss the relationship with the kids being strong without me having to push anything between anyone or be encouraging. With S I never had to ask for anything he just knew what had to be done. He knew what I needed. There’s also in bewteens I got from him that I don’t get with my boyfriend and I hate that cause my boyfriend IS the person that knows me better than anyone else. Since his accident though his life now has limitations. He’s not as cuddly as he once was and can no longer be rough or play fight and none the less have proper intercourse anymore. There’s just been a lot surrounding everything and now since I’ve had a year to reflect I. Have realized that I miss S and all those little things. I still love my boyfriend and since he had left me the one time(he left me for a month) after finding out between me and S… I have never wanted to feel that feeling like I was going to loose him ever again. I’m to emotionally attached to him and he’s a wonderful person. I know I’m just fucked up lol. I did text S back at one point and he told me how he felt used and I apologized as much I could but I know that my sorry will never pick up the pieces for him. me and S had each others backs during everything and always have I hate that he hates me now cause I could never feel that way towards him ever. He told me he had fucked 4 other girls the time we were talking and hooked up and that he now has a girl friend that he’s trying to work things out with . She’s already aware of me as he told her and she asked that he don’t ever contact me ever again. He still tries to text me on social media and even goes out Of his way to get updates from my family . I know we both still care about eachother and I still love him but I hate doing everything from a distance and out of each others lives but we both also still have resentment for one another and let alone in committed relationships. So now I’ve been suffocating in thoughts lol I’ve been so confused as to Why everything even happened but I also hate the thought that I miss it. This is just a vent post and if you read this far I really appreciate the time being taken out of your day or night and any advice would help🥺❣️

2024.05.21 20:44 fredinno Trump’s Reported Fund-Raising Tops Biden’s for First Time, Big Donors Warm to Trump

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/21/us/politics/trump-biden-fundraising.html
Mr. Trump’s advisers have said privately that his campaign, together with the Republican Party and all of their affiliated committees, raised $76.2 million in April. The Biden campaign said on Monday evening that it had raised $51 million in April with the Democratic National Committee — which was just over half as much as they raised in March, and also a touch less than they raised in February.
In filings with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, Mr. Biden’s campaign committee reported taking in $24.2 million in April, compared with $43.8 million in March.
Mr. Trump’s campaign still lags far behind in total cash on hand, the April filings show. Mr. Biden’s campaign ended April with $84.5 million on hand, holding roughly steady from the preceding month, while Mr. Trump’s campaign had $48 million in net cash on hand, up from $45 million in March.
Mr. Trump had been widely expected to close the fund-raising gap with Mr. Biden once he secured the Republican nomination, because he can now raise money in tandem with the Republican National Committee, collecting checks of more than $800,000 per donor. Mr. Biden has been gathering such large checks for months with his party, building an overall war chest with the Democratic National Committee and their shared accounts of $192 million.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/15/business/wall-street-donors-trump.html
When President Donald J. Trump left office, some of Wall Street’s biggest names, who had taken to him during his first term in the White House, swore they were moving on from him for good. They were fatigued by his leadership style, disappointed by some of his policies and shocked by the U.S. Capitol riot. Some of them even savaged him publicly.
Their stated distaste didn’t last. With Mr. Trump leading in the polls, big financiers on Wall Street, in Silicon Valley and elsewhere are edging into his corner, according to interviews with more than a dozen people who sought anonymity because they didn’t want their personal views to be tied to their employers.
The motivations are manifold. In many instances, it’s less that they’re enthusiastic about Mr. Trump — “I still hate the man,” one hedge fund billionaire said — and more that they’re exasperated with the economic and immigration policies of President Biden. In other cases, the willingness to support a return of Mr. Trump reflects a growing dissatisfaction with what many big Wall Street donors see as the White House’s hardening stance against Israel in its war on Gaza.
A prominent example of the about-face is Kenneth Griffin, a hedge fund magnate and political megadonor who publicly derided Mr. Trump as a “three-time loser” less than two years ago. In recent weeks, the Citadel founder has been in communication with the former president’s campaign about potentially making a major donation, which would amount to millions of dollars.
