2024.05.21 19:03 Michele_surface Hot take: telephoto lens on Xperia 1 IV and 1 V is sharp

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the telephoto lens: some redditors told me it is unusable, pictures are soft and or oversharpened. Zoom lens isn't sharp, further extending focal length will be a recipe for disaster etc.
I don't think this is quite the case. I was largely impressed by the sharpness most of the times, I'm showing here a variety of subjects across different situations.
Detail is rendered in a natural way, lighting is well-handled, with the scenes generally being evenly lit with no harsh shadows or blown-out highlights. In lower light indoor like the cat picture at 1600 ISO some noise is expected, but it appears to be well-controlled, the detail in the fur and the cat's eyes remains crisp, and the noise does not detract from the overall quality of the image. The colors are vibrant yet natural, and constrast is nice. I printed many photos at 15x20 cm size, and I was happy with the results.
All of these photos were taken in basic/auto mode, the phone will adjust automatically shutter speed and ISO. A steady hand ensures better results, and using the 3 second timer does further increase stability, it's better not to use the physical button at longer focal lenght / lower lighting.
Where it doesn't do a good job is in harsh backlit portrait as I show in the comments. Since the sensor is much smaller than the main camera, it relies more on multiple frame merging to get decent dyanmic range. As a result, we get an artificial halo effect surrounding the subject, this happens on extreme occasions also on main camera (like in every single other phone brand), but it's much more subtle. Also it's best not to use it in very low light without a tripod or a stable surface, but again it's the same even for a DLSR camera, and to my knowledge many other smartphone brands don't even let the user shoot with the telephoto lens but rather they crop the main camera output.
I'm very curios to test the new telemacro on the VI, as soon as I get back to Europe this summer.

Best clear wood stain/top coat on trim?
I am putting all new floors in my house and along with it I am updating all of the trim, including around windows and doors. My plan is to match the floor as closely as I can. The pictures I've attached to the post are the vinyl floors I have ordered, which was the closest option I could find to unfinished/natural hickory. I plan on using plain pine boards for all of the trim. So, my question is, what would be the best clear stain/top coat to use on all of the trim that will change the color of the boards the least, but is also the best at protecting/slowing the effect of sun damage/color aging on the wood?
I plan on doing a bunch of test stains/top coats when the flooring comes in, before installing all of the new trim, so I am willing to try a few different stains/top coats if a slightly tinted stain would be a better fit to my project.
