2024.02.09 18:14 Nijo32 How Brian Flores Builds His Defenses

Entering the 2024 offseason, the Vikings face massive uncertainty on the defensive side of the ball. Only Harrison Smith remains from the veteran core of the defenses built by Mike Zimmer, and even he could end up a cap casualty. With Danielle Hunter's contract expiring, the Vikings have just $64.3M committed to defensive players on the 2024 roster, roughly 27% of the salary cap. Brian Flores made the most of a ragtag unit in 2023, but needs exist at every position group. With the team finally emerging from the bloated contracts of the Spielman/Zimmer era, how will they attack a defensive rebuild? Will certain positions be prioritized, either in free agency or the draft?
To answer these questions, I've compiled a history of how Flores' teams have used draft picks, trades, free agency, and extensions to build a defense. The past cannot predict the future, but it can help us identify any patterns in Flores' history, and what that may mean for the Vikings' plans on defense this offseason.
Process:
  1. Draft picks used on defensive players have been valued using the Rich Hill Pick Value Chart, which assigns point values to picks based on actual trades made by NFL teams, giving more credence to recent years.
  2. Contract data includes both free agent signings and extensions of internal players, and was pulled from Over-The-Cap's website. Contract data only exists in full dating back to 2013, plus significant contracts dating back to 2006. Over-The-Cap includes a feature that modifies prior years' financial data to their 2024 equivalents, which is what I've pulled in this analysis to standardize the data across years in which the salary cap has fluctuated significantly.
  3. To avoid watering down contract data, UDFA & Practice Squad signings have been filtered out of the data.
  4. Trades include the net draft pick value given up for the player, while contracts assumed are included in the contracts data.

Draft

Full Draft History
While the number of selections is fairly even for each position, a clear priority is placed on DT and S. Flores' teams have used high picks on DT dating back to his first year in the NFL, when the Patriots selected Vince Wilfork 21st overall, all the way to his first selection as HC in Miami, Christian Wilkins at 13th. Investing the lowest total draft capital in edge rushers is another major takeaway at first glance, given the perceived importance of the position. The lack of draft capital at edge suggests Flores believes in either finding value at edge using other resources, or generating pressure schematically using interior defenders and blitzes.

1st Round Draft History
Looking specifically at the first round of the draft, a couple trends immediately jump out. As expected from the full draft chart, DT is a major foundational piece in a Brian Flores defense, and is far and away the leader in early pick usage. But contradictory to the full draft chart, EDGE and LB have also been picked early, and with great success; the four selections are Jerod Mayo, Jaelan Phillips, Chandler Jones, and Dont'a Hightower. There's a clear emphasis on spending high picks on the front seven.

Day 2 Draft History
Day 2 draft history paints an entirely different picture than the first round data, as this is the range Flores' teams have spent pick after pick on the secondary. Deploying many DBs and in a variety of ways is a tried-and-true approach of the Flores defense, with players like Patrick Chung, Jevon Holland, Ellis Hobbs, and Duron Harmon taken in this range. Edge rusher and LB selections are rare on Day 2, and tend to come much later into round 3.

Day 3 Draft History
Interestingly, the DB trend from Day 2 continues into the 4th round of the draft, then drop off significantly near the end, as evidenced by the high average value of Day 3 selections at CB and S. Edge rusher is a popular position in rounds 4-5, with Flores' teams especially effective at identifying "tweener" players, both at DT/DE and LB/Edge. Guys like Trey Flowers, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Deatrich Wise Jr. highlight great gems found here, and why Flores may be comfortable waiting to select edge rushers.
Trades
Processing img doer5fy2i3hc1...
Flores' teams have not been inclined to trade high-value picks for players, opting instead for veteran reclamations like Aqib Talib or Albert Haynesworth that can be acquired for a Day 3 pick. Of the 17 trades for defensive players, only the acquisition of Kyle Van Noy (another "tweener") proved to be a revelation. Van Noy was acquired in a 7th round pick swap netting 1 whole point on the draft value chart. The largest draft capital ever traded for a defensive player in Flores' career was picks 95 and 168 for Duane Starks and pick 145 in 2005; suffice to say, Flores comes from an organization that believes in scouting, drafting, and developing defenders, not trading draft capital for them.
Contracts

Defensive Cash Spend by Year
As noted in my process, full contract detail is only available dating back to 2013, omitting Flores' first decade in New England. Interestingly, despite the draft capital invested at DT, it's the lowest-paid position on Flores' defenses over this time period. This may be a reflection of how the NFL as a whole has valued the position. Edge rusher, however, is typically a high-paid position across the league, yet Flores' teams have spent relatively little at the position, similar to the draft capital invested at the position. Instead, the highest spending in Flores' teams has been at DB, and it's not particularly close. The addition of Byron Murphy, and retention of Harrison Smith, make much more sense with this in mind.

Free Agency History
Perhaps the most applicable chart to the Vikings' 2024 plans on defense, there are two clear positions Flores' teams have prioritized: EDGE and CB. At each stop, Flores' teams have spent big in free agency on these two positions, with the top five contracts handed out to Darrelle Revis, Byron Jones, Stephon Gilmore, Kyle Van Noy, and Marcus Davenport. Very little is spent at DT or S, which is fitting with the amount of draft capital invested at those positions.
Extensions
Extensions tend to overlap with where a team hits on a draft pick, and this chart definitely tells that tale. LBs like Dont'a Hightower and Jerod Mayo defined the Patriots' dynasty, and those two alone total $186M of the extensions handed out to LBs in the chart above. Interestingly, edge rushers received very little in extension money on Flores' teams, with Rob Ninkovich the only Patriots mainstay. Chandler Jones was traded away in the final year of his rookie contract to avoid an expensive extension, while Flores was ousted from Miami prior to Jaelan Phillips coming due for a payday.
Conclusions:
  1. If the Vikings spend their 1st round pick on defense, expect it to be on the defensive line. Not only is this what Flores' teams have done, but it aligns with a draft class that has several DL with consensus first round grades.
  2. The middle of the draft is the money zone for DBs. Depending on what is done with Harrison Smith's contract, Flores could be hunting for another versatile safety, or be looking to add a CB he's comfortable leaving on an island in Cover 0, similar to Mekhi Blackmon a year ago.
  3. If there's a splash free agent signing on defense (excluding Hunter), expect it to be at CB. Flores' teams have made huge signings here, including Darrelle Revis, Stephon Gilmore, and Byron Jones. Names topping the 2024 CB class include L'Jarius Sneed, Jaylon Johnson, Stephon Gilmore, Chidobe Awuzie, and Kendall Fuller.
  4. Expect a veteran addition at ILB. Flores' defenses have prioritized continuity and experience at LB, from the aforementioned Jerod Mayo and Dont'a Hightower to Jerome Baker and Elandon Roberts in Miami. Whether it's bringing back Jordan Hicks, or a reunion with free agent Jerome Baker, Flores will want a player he trusts communicating the defense.
  5. On the topic of former players, Flores may want to sign players he coached in Miami. While HC in Miami, Flores prioritized New England players he was familiar with in free agency, including Kyle Van Noy, Eric Rowe, Adam Butler, Elandon Roberts, and Jason McCourty. He may look to do the same here, with notable options including Christian Wilkins, Andrew Van Ginkel, Kyle Van Noy, and Raekwon Davis. Wilkins draws the most headlines and speculation, but the data suggests Van Ginkel is the much more likely target for a reunion.
  6. Flores' defenses have a long history of using hybrid edge / linebacker players, such as Rob Ninkovich, Kyle Van Noy, and Andrew Van Ginkel. Ivan Pace Jr. has excelled as a blitzing LB in a similar vain, and there are several intriguing options on the free agent market that possess this skillset: Frankie Luvu, Patrick Queen, Devin White, and Drue Tranquill. Flores often used D.J. Wonnum in this role in 2023, so there's a decent chance he's re-signed as well.
  7. There really isn't a precedent to help us predict what will be done with Danielle Hunter. The closest example we have is New England trading away Chandler Jones rather than paying him, but New England also extended players it viewed as foundations of its defense. Hunter seems committed to maximizing what's maybe his last shot at a huge contract, so this situation feels destined for free agency, and whether Kwesi / KOC / Flores can stomach the cost he'll command.
TL;DR - Flores historically targets DT and S in the draft, while paying big money for CB. EDGE is all-or-nothing, either a 1st round draft pick, big free agent signing, or late picks and cheap signings on scheme-specific players. At LB, the hit rate is very high, and the biggest expenditure is typically to extend good players rather than bring in new ones.

Show quality?
I am very new to ragdolls and I'm looking to potentially venture in to showing my ragdoll.
He's 5 months old and comes from a line of show quality ragdolls (see pictures for his family tree).
Is there anything I need to consider before showing him? Is he show quality?

2023.11.15 20:28 juicyjensen Juicy's 2024 Mock 1.0 with explanations and a few trades

1.CHI via CAR- Drake Maye, QB, UNC
The bitter irony of giving up everything it took to get up to #1 last year, only to earn the pick that would have kept home the hometown hero the next year. Tough scene in Carolina right now. Chicago can't pass on a QB here, not again. I can see a case for either Maye or Williams here, but after the Justin Fields experience (and the state of their OL) I think they will opt for the more pocket friendly QB who doesn't get in trouble holding onto the ball too long. I think Maya's experience playing and winning games with somewhat lesser surrounding talent will appeal to the rebuilding Bears as well. Caleb could easily be the pick as well.
2. NYG- Caleb Williams, QB, USC
This is a tough one, because I feel like the Giants have so many needs that they'd be best suited trading back for value. That said, they can't pass on Williams here. For all of his immense, MVP upside, talent, Williams behind this line with this group of playmakers has disastrous potential. Brass and staff will have to answer what they will do with Jones, who's still owed $40M next year. There's potential for this to get ugly and the New York media machine to fan the flames. But this is a staff and brass that has had immense success with raw, athletic gems in Josh Allen and Pat Mahomes. It's a risk they will have to take and a player you can sell to offer hope to a fanbase.
3. NE- Marvin Harrison Jr, WR, Ohio St
Will BB still be the one making this pick? Who knows. Would BB ever take a WR this high? Who knows. Is this an easy, slam dunk pick? Absolutely. I'll go with Occam's razor on this one.
4. ARI- Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn St
CB and IDL are huge needs, WR has to be tempting, they don't have a true game-breaker at edge, QB isn't a sure thing, there are plenty of ways this can go. Trading back is very much an option here as a result. But ultimately, adding $9M in cap space to while replacing a struggling DJ Humphries (who honestly might even have some trade value at that price tag) with a potential all-pro tackle down the line has to be appealing to a rebuilding team. Fashanu + Paris Johnson would be one hell of an athletic building block in the tackle spots.
5. ATL via CHI- JJ McCarthy, QB, Michigan
(ATL sends 2024 #9 and 2025 1st for CHI 2024 #5 and 2025 4th)
Not everyone is in on JJ, but I looooooove this fit. You get a QB who, IMO, would easily be the frontrunner to be QB1 next year, which makes me way less concerned about giving up next year's pick. You get a QB who is extremely comfortable in a run-first offense and will execute plays as called. You also get a QB who can be accurate on the move, with the traits to actually become a legit franchise QB down the line if things go well. Is it a slight overpay? Maybe, but it's a coach and GM on the hot seat moving up to get a QB. Assuming Arthur Smith is back, I think this is the perfect QB for the system and a calculated risk to not only sell hope, but potentially turn this conglomeration of interesting parts into a legitimate machine, while saving a ton of cap space to make a run.
6. GB- Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame
Bakhtiari is due $40M next year and hurt yet again. Yosh Nijman is a free agent who won't be back. Maybe Bakhtiari gets another year on the team on a reworked deal, but he isn't the franchise building block he once was. Rasheed Walker is a solid swing tackle, but he's not a starter ideally. If Bakh is back, You can slide Tom inside to replace Runyan, but you have insurance for whenever Bakh missed time. easy pick.
7. LAR- Laitu Latu, Edge, UCLA
Tackle is an option here, but with both Alt and Fashanu gone, I can't see it and I don't have another QB in this realm of the draft. Believe it or not, *checks notes* undrafted Ivy Leaguer Michael Hoecht isn't an ideal starter on the DL. Latu has some health concerns sure and maybe his length isn't prototype, but he's a menace who's NFL ready now and can make a huge impact year one. Historically, that's all the Rams tend to care about.
8. TEN- Malik Nabers, WR, LSU
There are other needs as well, but this is one of my favorite fits in the draft. Treylon Burks isn't ready to be a top two option in a passing attack and Nuk Hopkins is soon to be 32. Nabers has the ideal size to be a moveable #1 target, can win at all three levels, has sure hands and has been the most impressive tackle breaker I've seen at the position this year. He may not be quite as strong as AJ Brown, but you can use him in the exact same role and this offense has been sorely lacking that guy since trading him away. This is a pick the Tits need to make if they want to give Levis a chance to be the franchise guy.
9. CHI via ATL- Rome Odunze, WR, Washington
After trading back to acquire a second first-rounder In 2025, Da Bears get Maye a weapon outside. DJ Moore has been as advertised but the rest of the receiving corps has been tough to watch at times. Odunze will provide the size, speed, catch point ability and boundary feel to stretch the field vertically and open up the intermediate game for Moore, who can then be moved around and schemed into space more. Mooney may leave in free agency, but a pairing of Odunze at X, Moore at Z and Tyler Scott in the slot is a fun group. Odunze and Moore also both provide quality run blocking on the perimeter to help spring the surprisingly sound Bears running back group into gaps on the outside. Ideal fit and major need.
10. WAS- Dallas Turner, Edge, Alabama
Washington has other needs, OL and TE both have options here, but edge is suddenly a glaring need after jettisoning two premier talents at the deadline. Dallas Turner isn't the best edge setter ever in the run game, but you can find those guys cheaply in free agency. What you can't find, are explosive closers in the pass rush game, and Turner is the best in that mould in the class.
11. TB- Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia
Bowers has to go somewhere, and as much as I want to see what he would look like with Herbert in LA, I have a hard time seeing Licht pass on this kind of unique athletic talent at this point in the draft. Especially with TE being a legitimate need in TB.
12. NYJ- Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon St
It's no secret that OL is a need for the Jets. The Jets have tended towards freaky traits at the position in the past, but ultimately that hasn't panned out. Mims and Latham remain options, but I have a higher grade on Fuaga and I think his play strength and hand fighting are just next level. His ability to immediately pop gaps as a run blocker really should help open lanes in the much needed run game to help take some heat off of Zach Wilson or whoever is the QB in 2024. Easy pick.
13. DEN- Jared Verse, Edge, Florida St
For better or for worse, this is Sean Payton's team for the foreseeable future and lately that's been looking for the better. As such, I expect the Broncos to offer up whatever they can to try to move up for Caleb Williams (who Payton has essentially professed an undying love for as an analyst) including Pat Surtain, but unless Arizona winds up with the top pick, I don't see it happening. The Broncos have a conglomerate of undersized edge who can rush the passer, but they sorely lack a true three down ace who can set an edge. Verse is tailor made for that role and feels like a no brainer pick here, despite the team having plenty of other needs.
14. LAC- Jer'Zahn Newton, IDL, Illinois
This is what always happens. There's a player who everybody likes and is a freak athlete but is either a tweener or undersized and at a lower value position, then they fall to the Chargers. This year, that player is Newton and he just happens to fill a huge need for the team formerly known as San Diego.
15. IND- Keon Coleman, WR, Florida St
Indy quietly has a pretty good overall roster with a ton of cap space. As such, I do expect them to bring back Michael Pittman Jr, but he will be a free agent. Josh Downs is just as awesome as I expected, but Alec Pierce has left a lot to be desired and seemingly had zero chemistry with Anthony Richardson early in the year. For a GM who loves the big, traitsy players, Coleman is likely too good to pass up on here regardless of what happens with Pittman. Coleman is a power forward, who has an insane catch radius and simply doesn't drop catchable balls and can box out the perimeter in the run game. That skillset pairs pretty pretty well with AR15's. Redzone sets with Richardson at QB, Taylor at RB, Mo-Allie Cox + Ogletree, a resurgent OL and the combo of Pittman/Coleman at WR is terrifying from a size + athleticism standpoint. They can bully teams. I'm in on this one.
16. LV- Kool-Aid Mckinstry, CB, Alabama
I think there's a very real chance that this pick is a QB, but I don't want to guess between Daniels, Penix and Nix without knowing who the HC, OC or even GM are. I really want to put an edge here, but the big three are all gone at this point and the OL has honestly been solid. WR is an option here as well, but going into next year with just Nate Hobbs and Jakorian Bennett on the roster at CB just isn't viable. Ultimately, I expect the Raiders to throw some $$$ at CB in FA and go QB, but until I have more of the pieces to the puzzle, I'm going consensus BPA at CB here and sipping the Kool-Aid.
17. BUF- Chop Robinson, Edge, Penn St
The Bills suddenly have been the worst defense in the NFL in terms of EPA since week five (despite Ken Dorsey's head rolling). With only two Edge under contract in 2024 who have played over 60 snaps (including the nearly 35-year-old ghost of Von Miller at 125) and just three total edge under contract, sitting already $42M over the expected cap in 2024, I think Buffalo has to go edge here. Chop Robinson may be a pass rush specialist at this point, but he's a damn good one and learning from Von Miller could do wonders for his game. You can get edge setters later in the draft, but you won't find a Chop Robinson level screamer off of the outside. And that's very much what this defense needs to get off of the field opposite Rousseau.
18. CIN- Brian Thomas, WR, LSU
Tackle, IDL, S are all needs (if Jonah Williams leaves) but WR sticks out to me given the combo of an aging Tyler Boyd and a Tee Higgins who could ask for $25M plus a year hitting free agency. Thomas offers a similar skillset as Higgins with his contested catch/ highpoint ability and boundary skills. While he may not offer quite the same YAC ability as Higgins, he makes up for it with increased speed. Coming out of LSU, I'd imagine there's some level of familiarity between him, Burrow and Chase, which should help the transition somewhat. Ultimately, I think the Bengals try to replace 90% of Higgins, while saving $25M plus a year and spending that $ elsewhere. This may feel early for Thomas, but Thomas is reportedly ahead of Nabers on some teams boards and will only rise when the combine comes. Expect him to go in this range. Good player.
19. NO- Troy Fautanu, IOL, Washington
This has to be a trenches pick. I don't hate the Saints edge group and Penning deserves more development time at tackle across from the always good Ramczyk. So this pick comes down Fautanu, Barton and Lenny Taylor for me. Ultimately, in their usual cap hell ($87M above Cap in 2024 already) it's hard to see the Saints bringing back Peat, Hurst or Garcia,, who've all been mid at best anyways. As has Cesar Ruiz. While Barton can play C as well as G and OT in a pinch, Fautanu is simply the better player for me by a decent margin with light feet, quick hands and a lengthy track record of holding up against NFL caliber rushers as a left tackle. Especially with a legitimate stud at C in Eric McCoy, going for the better overall player is the play here and you don't want Derek Carr of all QB's facing consistent pressure up the middle.
20. ARI via HOU- Cooper Dejean, CB, IOWA
Easy one. The Cardinals have a massive need at CB and could need help at S if Budda leaves as well. Dejean is my #1 graded DB in the class and would immediately help what has been one of the worst run defending CB groups in the game. Pairing Dejean with Garret Williams would make this a young but viable unit who could grow together and pair well. Easy pick to make.
21. MIN- Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
I thought long and hard about edge or Leonard Taylor here, but ultimately, I loved this pairing after seeing how well Josh Dobbs worked in this offense. I've been really impressed with Daniels this year, and as much as I like Dobbs, Daniels offers a higher ceiling both as a runner and a pocket QB. KOC could do scary things with a runner like this and Daniels is the type of QB who has historically elevated elite WR both at ASU and LSU, which he will definitely have at Minny. I really like this fit and it saves the $ to try to add pieces on defense despite having over $50M in void year money for players not currently signed for 2024.
22. DAL- Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia
Sitting at $11M over the cap entering the 2024 free agency period with both Chuma Edoga and an aging Tyron Smith slated for free agency and Terrence Steele simply not cutting it, tackle is a huge need for Dallas IMO and it just so happens to have the BPA as well. This pick is a toss up between Mims and Latham for me, but I prefer Mims athletic ceiling and fit at the end of the day.
23. PIT- Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo
If you are a reasonable person who expects Patrick Peterson to be cut, the Steelers will have Joey Porter Jr as the only corner on the roster who has played an NFL snap before 2024 free agency and the group they have now outside of JPJ hasn't been good. The Steelers like to leave their CB on a bit of an island at times and no CB in this class is as experienced in that role as Mitchell. Mitchell reportedly is a legitimate 4.3 runner at 6'1 200 and his tape is the best of any CB in the class, albeit against inferior competition. I think Mitchell is an elite fit for this Steelers defense and an immediate upgrade at a position of major need.
24. HOU via CLE- Leonard Taylor, IDL, Miami (FL)
It's almost impossible not to root for this Texans team right now and Demeco Ryans has them playing well above where they should be, but this roster still has a lot of holes. The edge group with Will Anderson and former JuicyJensen draft crush Jonathan Greenard has been very solid and the CB room has a lot talent, but the spine of the defense needs a lot of upgrades. Leonard Taylor may not be the most consistent or refined player ever, but there aren't many humans at a left 6'3 305 with his combo of length, speed, strength and ability to get off of the snap. Who better than Demeco Ryans to help him reach his ceiling.
25. MIA- Graham Barton, OL, Duke
I may not be the biggest Barton Stan ever, but he's still a good player who can play all across an OL. Hear me out, what if this offensive line didn't feature either of Isaiah Wynn or Liam Eichenberg playing heavy snaps? What if Tua had an extra .3 seconds per snap to throw the ball. It's not a sexy pick but it's the pick you have to make as a winning team. My goodness Xavier Legette would be fun though.
26. KC via SEA- Xavier Legette, WR, South Carolina
(KC sends 2024 #31 and 2024 #94 to SEA for 2024 #26)
KC jumps up above a few teams who could conceivably use a big-bodied math-changing receiver and a team that is an elite skillset fit in SF, while Seattle recoups a bit of the value lost in the Lenny Williams trade. There are other good WR available at 31, but I'm not convinced Legette will make it there nor do I think any other WR available fits what the Chiefs need like Legette. Rashee Rice has been awesome, but he simply isn't athletic enough to be a true #1 or command 10 targets a game. Skyy Moore is very clearly a WR3 at best, Kadarius Toney is a gadget guy who is a risk for drops, suspensions and injuries and MVS is 100% getting cut to save $12M in the offseason. Legette offers the big body the Chiefs don't have, offers the GPS breaking speed the Chiefs don't have, offers the same contested catch ability Rashee Rice does and has been amongst the most sure-handed receivers in CFB this year, which is something the Chiefs desperately have needed. He's also used to playing with a QB who's stylistically extremely similar to Mahomes, so chemistry shouldn't be too hard to gain. He may not be the most polished route runner ever, but that's where Andy Reid comes in. Even just what he offers stretching the field vertically will open up the middle for Mr. Taylor Swift, Rice and the run game in ways they haven't had since their post Tyreek Hill reinvention. This might be my favorite playeteam fits in the draft.
27. JAC- Landon Jackson, DL, Arkansas
Edge is a legit need opposite Josh Allen, despite Tray Walker and Chaisson being first round picks on the roster. But if you think for even a second that Trent Balk will be able to avoid taking a 6'7 280 pound edge with insane length, reportedly a 4.65 40 time and the fluidity to run with TE AND a signature 3.5 sack performance vs Alabama, I will laugh in your face. This pick is happening. Jackson is very raw, but the ceiling here is pretty insane and it fills a need. Aesthetically, I enjoy taking a defender who looks like white Josh Dobbs on a villain arc as well.
28. SF- JC Latham, OL, Alabama
I'm not the biggest Latham fan ever, but this is pretty good value here. I expected to have Latham come off of the board a bit earlier than this, but didn't find the right home, watch Tyler Guyton if Latham is gone. Trent Williams is nearing retirement, Mckivitz is better served as a backup and Latham could at worst, improve a struggling interior line. Wiggins will be tempting and Legette would be a very fun piece here, but this is the pick they have to make.
29. BAL- Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson
The Ravens pretty much only have Stephens and Humphrey at CB next year pre free agency and have a solid track record of just going pure BPA round one with a lean towards high value contract positions. Wiggins fits that and will allow for Humphrey to slip back into the slot where he's been at his best historically and still have a strong CB group. Wiggins has been weak as a run defender in my looks, which scares me a bit, but he's great value here and fills a big need. The rich get richer.
30. DET- Bralen Trice, Edge, Washington
The Lions sneakily have a solid amount of cap to play with in 2024, so they could bring back Charles Harris and Romeo Okwara, but even still, those two simply don't have the juice or size of Bralen Trice. Trice is a very physical player who will fit right in culturally in the Campbell era Lions lockers. Trice has been a pressure machine despite facing doubles and holds all year and has improved as a run defender as well. While he wins with more power than speed and bend, he will face far less doubles opposite Hutchinson and he's a problem when 1V1 with a tackle. Trice can help the Lions one real weakness IMO, which is pressure from the other side of the line and is great value here at 30.
31. SEA via KC- Jordan Morgan, OL, Arizona
The Seahawks are in a weird position where they don't have many clear needs, but they also don't have many franchise level players outside of WDB. The edge room is pretty solid with the breakout of Boye Mare and a ton of quality depth and the OL has played well despite injuries, but with very limited cap space, the entire LB group slated to reach FA and a ton of incentive to bring back Leonard Williams, it's unlikely they are able to bring back all of Damien Lewis, Phil Haynes and Evan Brown. As such interior OL is. huge need. Jordan Morgan plays LT at Arizona and could play there IMO in the NFL, but is seen as a better fit in the interior by most NFL teams. This is a BPA + need pick that makes a ton of sense for a young team like this.
32. PHI- JT Tuimoloau, Edge, Ohio St
This pick came down to JTT, Emeka Egbueka, Tyler Nubin and Tyler Guyton for me. WR3 is a legit need and Egbueka could do work as the third option in a passing attack. Nubin fills a need at safety and is arguably BPA for me, but I don't see Howie going S round one. Guyton would represent a longterm plan at RT for when Lane Johnson retires and that is very viable to me. CB is an option but I don't have any RD1 grades and that's not a typical Howie move, plus both starters are coming back. But ultimately, I think this is the year the Eagles move on from free agents Derek Barnett and Brandon Graham. Josh Sweat is a stud, Haason Reddick is a beast at 6'1 240 and I like Nolan Smith, but I can't see the Eagles running a rotation at edge with just one player over 240. JTT has a limited ceiling to me, but he's a sound player and a large human who can provide pressure and would be in an ideal situation in Philly. Plus it just feels like a Howie pick.

Entity & KoC: Bridging DeFi and GameFi on MultiversX by @EntityFinance
Web3 gaming and DeFi are joining forces! Entity has officially extended its partnership with Knights of Cathena to help integrate some DeFi firepower into their next-generation blockchain game. Read on to learn more about our shared vision to unlock the full potential of DeFi and GameFi.

Entity & KoC: Bridging DeFi and GameFi on MultiversX

A MultiversX GameFi gem

The glory and treasure of Altea await you!
To succeed in this fantasy world, you need intelligence and determination. And with winning commanders earning NFTs and $CGO tokens on the MultiversX blockchain, bragging rights aren’t the only thing at stake.
Knights of Cathena is an exciting GameFi project that combines addictive gameplay with the freedom and rewards of Web3. Powered by fivefingergames, this turn-based strategy game delivers the perfect balance of enjoyable gaming mechanics and compelling blockchain rewards- appealing to both hardcore gamers and hardcore crypto enthusiasts.
As you may know, there are billions of gamers worldwide. Only a small fraction, however, currently use ‘Play-To-Earn’ games like Axie Infinity, which has been criticized for its “easy and mindless” gameplay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfCE70vOtZo
The game is already in its Devnet Alpha test phase
The team behind Knights of Cathena (KoC) is working hard to flip the script on this narrative with their tactical and engaging gameplay. Instead of a ‘Play-To-Earn’ experience where the game itself takes a backseat to the rewards, KoC is a ‘Play-And-Earn’ game that is way more fun than just grinding for tokens.
Players command an army of 3D soldiers such as knights, archers and wizards who each have different strengths and weaknesses. With the right strategy, you can outsmart your opponents, earn tokens and unlock a wide range of NFT items to improve your team and advance your ranking from Peasant all the way to Grandmaster.
Described by some fans as “chess on steroids”, Knights of Cathena combines the power of MultiversX with the strong foundation of the Unity game engine. KoC is already playable in its Devnet Alpha release and just launched on the Epic Games Store earlier this week.

Now available on Epic Games

On Tuesday May 23, 2023, Knights of Cathena officially went live for over 200 million Mac and PC gamers on Epic Games. As one of the very first Web3 games on the platform, this news shows that KoC is at the forefront of bringing GameFi to the mainstream.

KoC players can already start earning tokens and NFT prizes
Now available to a massive global audience, KoC can potentially onboard a huge wave of new users to MultiversX. The Epic Games Store will be updated with subsequent versions of the game, such as Knights of Cathena Beta and the mainnet release with fully integrated $CGO tokens.
In the meantime, early users will be rewarded down the road with real tokens based on how many red gems they collect. Players who collect at least 100,000 gems during the Alpha test phase will also get a special edition NFT pet they can use in the full release of the game. So, don’t wait to try out KoC now and start earning some real rewards!

Harmonizing DeFi and GameFi

Today, we are excited to announce that Entity will help integrate DeFi features into Knights of Cathena for its mainnet release.
Entity believes that DeFi and GameFi are two of the best use cases for driving Web3 adoption, and we look forward to leveraging our expertise to help capitalize on synergies between these two spaces.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td8RYzX8H3k&t=1s
KoC could help onboard gamers from Epic Games and beyond into the world of DeFi
Since Knights of Cathena will feature a decentralized in-game economy, this partnership with Entity opens the door to a range of intriguing new use cases. Overall, the goal is to make the $CGO ecosystem as vibrant, efficient and powerful as possible.
This dynamic can help onboard more gamers to DeFi, while also encouraging DeFi investors to get involved more with blockchain gaming. We will release more information in the coming months about how exactly this integration will work in practice, so stay tuned!

Elevating the ecosystem together

The partnership between Entity and Knights of Cathena goes back to March 2022, when KoC became the first project ever listed on the Entity Project Monitor.
Since then, the Knights of Cathena Team has been hard at working building not only the project’s core gameplay mechanics, but also the supporting Web3 elements that offer a truly seamless GameFi experience. Entity is focused on kickstarting Web3 mass adoption, so we are impressed with how KoC balances decentralization with easy onboarding for new users.
Entity also values how Knights of Cathena is laying the groundwork for a strong community element. In particular, the game will support clans known as Noble Houses that connect gamers like GameFi mini-DAOs.

Lukas from KoC will give a keynote presentation at the Entity Builders Forum on June 10
To share updates about the game’s progress, Knights of Cathena CEO Lukas Anetsberger joined the Entity Project Dialogues earlier this year. You can tune in here if you missed this spirited conversation about gaming, MultiversX and building on Web3.
Lukas will also join the upcoming Entity Builders Forum on June 10. KoC is a Gold Partner for the Builders Forum, and Lukas will have a special presentation slot from 1:30–1:45 PM UTC at this exciting online event.
In addition to Lukas’ special presentation, the Builders Forum will feature captivating discussions with top Web3 builders. Plus, there will be a range of individual rewards as well as team prizes for the most enthusiastic MultiversX community in the Battle of Hype. To join this insightful free event, sign up now!

It’s still day one

While you can already start playing KoC and earning rewards, this GameFi project’s hypergrowth phase is still yet to come.
Knights of Cathena will debut their Beta release in Q3 2023, with their full game available in Q1 2024. Their $CGO token is also scheduled to go live in the next few months, delivering a powerful tool for KoC to bootstrap their game, incentivize new players and supercharge GameFi mass adoption.
The KoC Team has a comprehensive strategy to onboard new players. This approach takes the best of Web3, such as token rewards and decentralized organizations, and the best of Web2 gaming, like working with Epic Games and sharing live content on Twitch.
Speaking of Twitch, make sure to check out KoC’s regular Twitch Streams every Wednesday at 17:00 PM UTC where the team dives into gameplay and behind the scenes action that shows what it’s really like to build a blockchain game.
Plus, join the Knights of Cathena community on Twitter, Telegram and Discord for all the latest news, contests and more.

Bringing together the best of Web3

Entity, Growth Engine for Web3, is all about unleashing innovative new use cases for the MultiversX blockchain.
Moving forward, we look forward to offering our resources and DeFi knowledge to help KoC grow their project and onboard the next wave of users to Web3.
As we continue to evolve and expand our partnerships, make sure to follow Entity on Twitter and join us on Telegram for all the latest updates!

2023.01.16 19:45 oreo51002 Mussar Gem 34 Don't wear a costume

This essential gem is from Lecture 18, "Excuses Blocking The Door Of Heaven? - MUSSAR Pirkei Avot (18)" https://youtu.be/MmODOpynKOc
"You want to be a chasid? Chazak u’baurch, do it. but remember, that means you have to go from aleph to tav, do everything the Torah says, plus more. So, if you want to do it, do it. but don’t be one of these people who looks like one but is not even an am ha'aretz. Because that’s what we have a lot of. We have a lot of people that look like they're chasidim but in reality are closer to being a boor or an am ha'aretz. They just have the look. So don’t do it. You look like a normal Jew, put a basic kippah on, wear normal clothes, act like a normal human being. You don’t have to a beard that sweeps the floor. When you can actually handle the responsibility of looking the part, then be the part. But until you can do it, there’s no reason for it. There's absolutely no reason to look a certain way if you can’t handle it. I remember when I was not religious, one of the things that constantly gave me an excuse to stay not religious was when I would see so-called religious people in casinos…What are you doing here? You are supposed to be a man of G-d. Even to somebody who’s blind, it doesn’t look good. Even if I don’t believe in anything you say, it still doesn’t look good… It becomes chillul Hashem, desecrating of Hashem's name…So this is one of the most important things that all of us need to understand. As a Jew, you have a serious responsibility to yourself and Hashem. This responsibility is to represent Hashem at all times. You can’t say, since I'm not wearing the Chasidic clothes, I can act however I want. No, because the reality of it is is that if you act like a fool, someone will find out you are Jewish and that's what will be on the headlines."

2021.02.03 18:40 More-Bee-4851 I am 42 years old making $72,000 living in Northern California and work as a Consultant

Section One: Assets and Debt
I am 42 years old making $72,000 as a Consultant. I live a debt free lifestyle, work part time, and am CFBC. I track with the median household income in my area, but it’s just me an my dog in a one income household. I grew up in a family that valued education but had no money to contribute to it, so I worked my way through college. I graduated with some student loan debt. I don’t have a family financial safety net and have not/will not inherit anything, but also do not need to financially support my family. I took a purposeful step back in my career after growing into a management position and realizing that it was not what I wanted to do. Now I make the bulk of my income doing the work I love. Pre-Covid I traveled quite a bit for fun, both internationally and in a camper van. I have tried working while traveling and neither was rewarding, my job permits me to separate the two and I do not work when I travel. I have struggled with that during Covid, because what is the point of working less if you can’t do anything fun with your free time?
My Covid pod is a married couple, another single women, and a new boyfriend that I started dating this summer. He is kind, creative, a good listener, and brings me coffee in bed. The boyfriend, from here on dubbed the King of Coffee (KoC) has his own place, but for a while was spending weeks at a time at mine. We recently both decided to refocus and be more effective, so he is spending ½ his nights at his own place. We do not combine expenses.
Retirement: 243K - I have 237 K between two employer sponsored 401K’s and another 6K in a Roth IRA. I’m trying to catch up and would like to make the max contribution this year but an struggling with motivation.
Equity: 0 -I’m renting. I lost about 80K in equity in a home during an unfortunate break up a few years ago and am happily renting. It sucked to walk about from 15 years of equity, and have to start from scratch on a down payment fund, but sometimes your freedom is worth it. I was able to cash flow legal fees to emerge debt free.
Savings account balance: 900
Checking account balance: 13,000, I keep my emergency fund in my checking account. I like my money like I like my wine, liquid.
Credit card debt (and how you accumulated it): 0, I use my cards and pay them off very month.
Student loan debt (for what degree): 0, paid off 21K in loans about 10 years ago for a Bachelors Degree
Section Two: Income
Main Job Monthly Take Home: 3,264 (variable)
I've been working in my field for 18 years, my starting salary with a Bachelor’s degree was $23,000 (a pay decrease from my college jobs). I was up to 109K for a few years in my 30’s. But I woke up fat and miserable, so took a step back. I now work part time as an employee for a couple of different companies with a ton of autonomy and the ability to take on the work I love to do. I average the same per hour, but work a lot less hours. California state law prevents most companies from hiring me as a 1099 employee, which is fabulous, because it makes my life really simple. I fill out a timecard with my hours and they deposit money in my bank account. It’s like magic! I primarily work for one company, and they pay for my health insurance premiums, which is a huge benefit vs when I was spreading my time more evenly among multiple jobs and purchasing health insurance out of pocket. I also net between 4-7K a year on a side gig that is 1099 contract wor.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: $2,964, per month My primary job is somewhat seasonal. My take home varies a lot as I am not guaranteed hours, and sometimes choose not to take on projects with work that I don’t love. This is netted wages from my primary job over the yea12. Month to month it can be more or less.
Side Gig Monthly Take Home: $300 per month (averaged). 1099 contractor work. My gross is about 12K a year for this, but there is a ton of overhead and taxes ($3,600 per year in broker fees, $3,400 business fees, office space, mileage for this job, and other business expenses). I allow this side business to pay for my phone, office space, etc.
Section Three: Expenses
Rent: $1,050, I’m silly lucky to have rented a dated 1 bed/ 1 bath flat in a great area before prices skyrocketed. My landlord that has not kept up with market rate. After being a home owner, I love not having to mow the lawn, worry about the gutters, or fix anything. Market for this unit would be around $1,850. Current California rent controls ensure my rent will not raise more than 6% this year.
Renters / home insurance: $12
Savings contribution: 0, nothing budgeted, my income is variable so my account ebbs and flows. I sweep any extra money over 15K from my checking into my savings, and start to panic if my balance gets below 12K. I have been a scattered spender and lacked focus for the last year.
Debt payments: $0
Donations.$50 a month, Average between the local food bank, individual fundraisers for homeless outreach, go fund me, and local non-profits.
Electric: $55 (average)
Natural Gas: $50 (average)
Cellphone: $30* (this is my portion of an unlimited data, talk, text on a family plan with a friend, I write this off against my 1099 income)
Gym membership: $89, this is a small family owned gym that I love. I kept my membership active during the Covid shutdown which was objectively a waste of money, and just started going back to their classes (done outdoors in compliance with local regulations)
Pet expenses: $140, this is the average for food, flea and heartworm meds, and one scheduled vet visit a year, and one unscheduled. In the past it has been less, but the last couple of years vet costs have gone up for my aging pup, and will likely continue to rise.
Car payment: $0, I saved to buy a new (used) car in cash for 15K early last year. It is a great car, and should last me 5-8 years without looking like a beater.
Car insurance:$130, this is for a camper van, a car, and a motorcycle. I pre-pay for the 6-month policy.
Gasoline: $200 (I get some of this back but will get to that).
Groceries: $300, I’m not great about sticking to this
Wine Club: $30, I cancelled a wine club because we can’t go wine tasting due to COVID, and then immediately signed up for another one, so there is that.
Coffee: $30, yes, this is just for coffee at home. I purchase beans from a local farmer owned co-op because it’s important to me.
Eating Out: $120, this is really variable, I used to spend more, and our COVID lockdown just loosened a bit so I have been meeting with my pod for outdoor dining/happy hour more often.
Toiletries and home goods: $30
Clothes: $75
Other Business expenses: $312. If I’m counting that gig income I should probably count the expenses. Professional licensing fees for my primary job: $38 ($450 once a year), Professional registrations for side job: $75* ($900 once a year, write off against 1099 income). Office space rental: $199* (this one kills me but I’m locked into a year-long contract on this, it includes copies/printing/wifi/coffee etc and is a great workspace, but has been unusable most of the year due to COVID, write off against 1099 income)
So that’s what I "plan" to spend money on, lets see how I do.
Wednesday: Daily Total $81.11
The KoC stayed over, so that means I get coffee in bed (see above budgeted expensive coffee). I had to run off to work, so he also walked the dog. We started to date about 6 months ago and he is a gem and really starting to grow on me.
Grabbed gas at Costco on my way to work $50.90. My car takes premium, it’s $3.22 a gallon, and I get about 20 miles to the gallon. About ½ of the miles I drive on this tank will be reimbursed at 56 cents a mile by my primary employer, so I will get reimbursed about $89 on this tank. The mileage rate is also suppose to account for wear and tear, which is much harder to calculate. My tires are almost brand new, but when I had to replace one it was $260! This car is much more expensive to drive them my previous vehicles.
At lunch I ran to a sporting goods store to look for snow pants to go to the snow this weekend. Dang they are expensive, maybe I can do without, or find some at a thrift store? I popped into the grocery store for food for lunch and walked out with a giant bag of pumpkin seeds, 3 avocados, a couple jars of Paleo BBQ Sauce, some pecans, beef jerky, and a couple protein bars ($30.21).
I get home and the dog has successfully extracted all of the trash from both the bathroom and kitchen trash can. I proceed to vacuum up shreds of paper and am reminded that the nozzle on my vacuum is broken (functional, but you have to hold it together).

Thursday: Daily Total $57.19
The weather is awful and I decide not to go into work, and instead worked on technical reports from home. I hate reports and only ended up billing about 3 hours. But I don’t have to worry about snow pants anymore because at the end of the day I get offered another 8 hours of the work I love so do, so now I get to work the weekend. I found a broken vacuum on FB marketplace for $30 and go pick it up. Apparently, all purple Dysons are not the same model. The parts are not interchangeable. I need to pay better attention. Now I have two broken vacuums. Doh!!
A friend called to see if I wanted to grab dinner. We choose a spot with a cozy patio. The City has temporary suspended metered parking fees due to COVID. I bring a blanket. I got an entrée and a glass of wine, my total with tip and tax is $27.19.

Friday: Daily Total $174.58.
Coffee delivered to my bed again! Went back to the gym from the second time this year. It just reopened under revised COVID restrictions this week. Classes are outside and masks are required, but it still feels strange. I justify it because I just haven’t been doing the weight training I should on my own, and the cold weather has really stalled my outdoor cardio workouts. Packed a lunch and just worked through lunch. Had to apply to renew one of my professional permits ($136.90)
Stopped at the grocery store on my way home onions, cucumbers, a shitload of broccoli, two heads of cauliflower (one organic and one not, why are these the same price? Is there a size difference? Better get them both and figure it out later), two lbs of grass fed ground beef that are on-sale and a rack of ribs ($37.68)
Had roasted broccoli and tea for dinner, and worked on a report for a non-profit board I’m on. Went on an audio book checkout/download spree using my public library app and started listening to the “Happiness Project.”

Saturday: Daily Total $10.37
Off to work because of the earlier lack of productivity. Had to stop by CVS and purchase some supplies for the office $10.37 (my employer will reimburse me for this). Packed some leftover chili con carne and a jar of snackies (see aforementioned groceries, pumpkin seeds, pecans, and beef jerky). Zoomed into a 7-hour annual meeting for the non-profit board while working.
Done by 4 pm. I’m sore from the workout yesterday. Everything hurts. I get home and am started to soak in a lavender epsom salt bath while listening to my audiobook when I get a call from a friend. She had a rough day and is wondering if I have time for dinner. I abandon my lovely bath and rally.
We split a bottle of wine, I have a cookie but decline to share her pizza since I’m “trying” to eat better. My friend insists on paying. I let her, but I feel bad. I am hyper sensitive to carrying my own weight since I am choose to make less and be relatively stress free while they work long hours. I don’t want to let that get in the way of my friendships. I never say I don’t have the money to do something fun.

Sunday: Daily Total $60.50
I run back into work to finish some things, but am supposed to be done early for a lunch date with the KoC. I call on my way home to make sure he will be ready to go by because I’m starving and we are planning on walking. He is sort of ready to go, and we walk the dog about a mile to my favorite café, which also just opened for outside dining. It is a beautiful day, my food takes forever. I get a giant noodle salad and drink water, it’s $14.35, but the KoC pays. This is the second meal he has purchased for me in 6 months, the first being our first date. He is always up for a long walk around the neighborhood, which I love. He is not well employed, and we don’t eat out much. He eats a lot of my groceries, and when he is with me at the grocery store will sometimes Venmo me $20. I have found myself purchasing more things he likes recently.
On our walk back, I get a text that some friends are at a local brewery. We redirect our walk. The KoC takes one look at the crowd (outside and at separate tables, but it’s still more people than we have seen in months) and asks if I mind if he just heads back to my place. No worries. The puppers and I flag down my friend, we decide we are also not comfortable with the crowd and head to a nearby Café. I repeat the bottle of wine ($18) and cookie ($3.75) from the day before, my portion of the bill is $15.50 with tax and tip. She insists on sending the rest of the bottle of wine home with me.
For dinner the KoC and I have a game night date in a friend’s yard. She has a lovely yard with twinkly lights and provides heated blankets and heat pads for each of us. We distance and wear masks when not eating/drinking. We finish the rest of the bottle of wine I brought from the Café, a bottle of port from my wine club (accounted for in wine club budget, $25), and order sushi for delivery (I Venmo her for my portion, $20). No games are actually played, but it’s nice to catch up.

Monday: Daily Total 0.
I sleep through the 6 am gym class. Chat with a friend about nailing down reservations and hiking permits for some national parks this summer and apply for the lottery. I have a few client calls in the morning. I have poor work hygiene and work from by bed most of the morning. The dog doesn’t get out of bed until noon, At least I beat her. Had breakfast for lunch, farm fresh eggs from a friend and a few slices of bacon. Got myself together enough for a zoom meeting in the afternoon, and ducked off-line early to hit the 5pm class at the gym. I roast a boat load of broccoli for dinner and have more nuts/seeds/ sugar free chocolate as snacks. KoC stops by late after he is done with work and eats the rest of the broccoli. He stays over. I’m getting coffee in bed tomorrow.

Tuesday: Daily Total 0.
Just as I suspected, coffee in bed. We wake up early and spend some time chatting in bed since I’ve been a little unavailable the last few days. He goes for a run, showers, and brings me tea while I work on a report before taking off to start his day. We are both trying to be more effective with our time and part of that is hard deadlines ending our time together. I bill 8 hours, make myself lunch, and never leave the house.
For dinner I ate the equivalent to a whole head of roasted cauliflower and slow roasted the ribs from the earlier shopping trip. If you are wondering, there is no flavor difference between the organic and non-organic, the non-organic head is a bit larger. I rice the cauliflower stems in the blender and toss the cauliflower rice in fridge to sauté with some ground beef for another meal later. I knit while listening to my audiobook. I have a lifetime supply of yarn so it’s a no spend hobby.

Wednesday: Daily Total 0.
I signed up for the 7am class since I slept through 6 am on Monday. Everything hurts from Monday’s workout. The KoC hand ground my coffee, set out the pour over, and filled the kettle before he left last night, so I just need to hit the power on the kettle and pour over.
Weekly Total: $383.75
Food + Drink: $155.58
Fun / Entertainment:0
Home + Health:$30
Clothes + Beauty: 0
Transport: $50.90
Other: Work expenses, $147.27
Reflections:
I’m trying to spend less on crap. I have way to many clothes, but always seem to be able to justify small clothes and food spending. I did a good job on these things this week. The reopening of restaurants, combined with the nice weekend weather led to more eating out then I’ve done in months. Pre-Covid, a large portion of my spending was social eating, happy hours, drinks with friends, dinners out, and I have used that for justification for buying more food for home in recent month.
My income and expenses are messy and difficult to categorize. Some work expenses I pay out of pocket, and some transportation expenses are recovered as a reimbursable. My savings account says I’m treading water, and not making progress towards additional saving for a house. That’s not horrible given the current Covid situation, but it’s also not great, since there is less social spending opportunities so I should be making progress.
My life is easy and stress free with time to do the things I love when I had the motivation. I worry if I am making/saving enough to maintain it in the long run? I struggle with the worry that I am not working hard enough or saving enough to secure my retirement. I'm saving 18K a year towards retirement (401K and Roth). Housing costs continue to skyrocket and I am also fearful that I am not keeping up income/asset wise with the COL in my area or my peers. Oh, and I miss traveling.

2021.02.01 13:11 Cutethulhu_ Help with my BB/BF Chieftain

Hello guys!
This league is not going good for me :( First time that I can't get past AW2 Conquerors as they are murdering me and I deal no damage with almost any build lol
This is the pastebin: https://pastebin.com/XGLu4w0r
Few things that I know:
- My gems aren't 20/20 yet
- My chest is still a tabula rasa
- I'm working on my first cluster jewel
The thing is:
- I don't get how people on poeninja sustain their mana without flasks (Cinderswallow?) and how they do it on boss fights if they run out of mana
- I'm getting (almost) one shotted on red maps even though I have capped my resis and almost 65% chance to block
- I'm not even close to 1 mill DPS, is this only because of my gems?

2020.10.19 11:56 loklostus A list of less known places to visit in İstanbul. Kind of Hidden Gems. With some general suggestions/info.

Miniaturk Museum: https://goo.gl/maps/3MRXX6GyoLhmZBAH9 This is a museum of miniature Turkish buildings (Don't know any better way to explain it). It is an open-air museum that you walk between miniature models of famous historical buildings around Turkey and more.
Rahmi M. Koç Museum - first and only industrial museum in Turkeyİstanbul: https://g.page/rahmikoc-muzesi?share This is Koç Museum. Koç is a big holding/corporation. It shows their history and Turkey's industrial history. So if you like historical cars/trains etc. you will like this place. There was a submarine when i visited here about 10 years ago i dont know if it is still there. This is the link to their website https://www.koc.com.ten-us/activity-fields/areas-of-social-and-cultural-activities/rahmi-m-koc-museum
Model of Ancient Constantinople: https://goo.gl/maps/gWgDFXzBs3Yxi7ht8 This one may seem odd as it is the Office of Civil Engineers but it has a model of ancient Hippodrome/Arena of Constantinople and Byzantion. It is nothing big but i find it interesting. If you happen to be in Karaköy i suggest you to check this out.
Anadolu and Rumeli Fortress: https://goo.gl/maps/P8Engm5C4HJzyCpG6 this and https://goo.gl/maps/P7QCeYhvgdXUKXrf9 this are two forts that are near the boshphorus built to block supplies from getting into Constantinople.
Istanbul Sapphire: https://g.page/sapphireavym?share This is a tall building in Istanbul. It has an observation floor. It has great view. It is also a shopping mall.
Kanyon (Canyon) and Istinye Shopping Mall: https://goo.gl/maps/z56kW9KFb8dYmiXs5 This is a semi-open shopping mall. There are some more around it. Just writing this one as you said about shopping. Istinye Park Shopping Mall: https://goo.gl/maps/Jmuf8kAwsBnQW9dJ8 This is also a shoping mall more richer people go.
Jacqueline Cookies: https://g.page/jacquelinecookies?share This is a cookie shop named Jaqueline. I dont know if they are open during these times as per corona&stuff. I suggest everyone this place and nobody said bad things. Go to Anatolian side too especially Kadıköy/Üsküdar. Eminönü is the shopping place for nearly everything but it is highly crowded and probably more expensive.
Tacofit: https://goo.gl/maps/sp9RvKrG9D3V5NuV9 This is a Taco restaurant. I like it but never had taco abroad so idk.
Rumelifeneri: https://goo.gl/maps/DewvxuMTRYumi4yz5 This and the village around it is the northern most part of Istanbul. I have never went there but people like it. Location is for Rumeli Feneri Artillery Castle.
Polonezköy: https://goo.gl/maps/iLW4JhTjUBSZuMCH8 This one has breakfast cafes, nature park and an airsoft playing area. It is in a higher altitude and away from urban part of Istanbul. But especially in the weekends, traffic is horrific.
Emirgan Grove/Park: https://goo.gl/maps/cM7eVrwwyCnEvEqR9 This is a decent park.
Camlica Hill: https://g.page/camlica-tepesi?share This is a hill on the anatolian side. I loved this place when i was in elemantary school (about 15 years ago). I dont know how it is right now.
And also i suggest you to get off in Haliç Metro Station (M2 LINE/GREEN LINE). https://goo.gl/maps/xbiCt7CNG1TWvcM79 It is a station in the middle of Haliç (Golden Horn). It is basically a free viewing station and it is close to attractions.
Info/Suggestions
-Istanbul has integrated transport card. Which means you can use same card on metro/bus/metrobus/ships/cable car etc.
-Istanbul card is a card that you keep and put money in it to use. Different people can use the same card(Default card that is not person issued cards). There are one use cards but the cost more money after all. In metro stations, there are machine that you can fill your card, these also give you new cards. These has English and many more language options.
-Try to use metro mainly, especially around rush-hours. If i have to use bus and it is rush-hour. I wait for 1 or 2 hours then use it.
I highly suggest using a navigation application like Trafi. It will make your life much more easy.
These are what i remember as i write this on 2:27 am. Those should be plenty as you will also see more things on the way walking.
Note1**:** All of those locations can be closed depending on your visitation date and the state of the Virus.
I hope you have a great vacation in here. Dont forget to bring a raincoat AND thin summer clothes as it can be hot as summer one day and heavy rain on the other :).
Note2: This post was originally a comment to https://www.reddit.com/istanbul/comments/jd30mhidden_istanbul_gems/ this post and u/corpes_magnus suggested to make it into its own post. I added names of places by his suggestion and couple of small edits.
This is just some places that i like and i don't think many tourists know about. Feel free to add more your own.

2020.06.07 08:15 KagsTheOneAndOnly MORE miscellaneous tidbits from the 2019-20 season that you probably know about but I decided to write about anyway:

Link to part 1, if you're interested

Edit: Part 3!

  • - The extremely clutch: Chris Paul is having one of the most clutch seasons in history. OKC have 3 more wins than expected based on their net rating, and are a league-leading 29-13 this season in clutch scenarios, with an extraordinary +30.3 net rating in the clutch, tops in the NBA. The Thunder have done this in part by allowing the Point God to take over in close games. CP3 leads the NBA in points scored in the clutch, and is, incredibly, 2nd in clutch efficiency as well, with a monster 68.1 true shooting % in these situations, among players who've taken at least 50 shots in the last 5 minutes of close games. CP3 does most of his damage from the midrange, where he's been smoking hot this season, sinking an excellent 52% of his middies, and making a blistering 62% of his pullup twos in the 4th quarter.
  • - The less clutch: If the Thunder have been clutch, the Mavericks have been the opposite. They have the 5th-best net rating and SRS (simple rating system) in the league, but 'only' the 13th-best record. They're 14-21 in clutch situations (.400 win %), which ranks 22nd, by far the worst of any above-.500 team (the next worst 'good' team are the Grizzlies, who have a solid 52% win rate in clutch situations). Their fearsome offense, which ranks best in the league by some distance (115.8), shrinks to a ghastly 93.9 in the clutch, which is 2nd-worst among all teams. Their ceiling as a team is clearly sky-high, but their youth is also apparent with their troubles late in the 4th.
  • - Dynamic Duo: Harden (34.4ppg) and Westbrook (27.5ppg) are now the top-scoring duo (combining for 61.9ppg) in the modern NBA, handily beating out 02-03 Shaq and Kobe (57.5ppg) for the number-one spot. I say modern because during one outlier season in the pace-inflated days of yore, Wilt Chamberlain (50.4ppg) and Paul Arizin (21.9ppg) combined in 1962 for 72.3ppg.
  • - The Importance of Spacing: Ever since Clint Capela played his last game in a Rockets uniform, Russell Westbrook has exploded as a scorer, averaging 31.0 ppg on 57.5 TS%, up from 26.3ppg on 52.6 TS%. Meanwhile, teammate and fellow MVP James Harden has tapered down his own scoring rate to accomodate for Russ, scoring "only" 31.0 ppg since 1/31/20, down from 35.7 ppg prior to that (his efficiency remains unchanged, ~61-62TS%).
  • - "Take me out, coach": Giannis's 30.9 Minutes Per Game (MPG) would be by far the fewest minutes an MVP would have averaged were he to win the award - the next highest was Curry in 2015-16 (his unanimous season), when he averaged 32.7 MPG. Perhaps most incredibly, Giannis is averaging fewer minutes than Sixth Man of the Year favourite Dennis Dennis Schröder (30.9 MPG). Wow.
  • - "Take me out, coach", part II: Speaking of Minutes, fellow MVP candidate LeBron James's 34.9 MPG this year would be a new career-low. His previous career-low was 35.2 MPG, set last season. His career-high is 42.5 MPG, set in the 2005-06 season, when James finished 2nd in MVP voting to Steve Nash, averaging 31/7/7 in his 3rd season in the league.
  • - A pretty good team: I've talked before on how dominant the Bucks' defense this year has been, so here's a very short snippet on how dominant they have been just in general. --- SRS is a team rating system that takes into account average point differential (~net rating) and strength of schedule. The top 6 teams ever, by this metric, are the '71 Bucks, '96 Bulls, '72 Lakers, '17 Warriors, '97 Bulls, and the '72 Bucks. The 2019-20 Milwaukee Bucks are currently 7th, with an SRS of 10.44. Who's 8th? The 73-win Warriors. (If you're curious, this year's Lakers are 44th, with a 7.75 SRS. Last year's Bucks are closer to this year's Lakers SRS-wise, ranked 30th with an SRS of 8.04.)
  • - 7-foot Ray Allen: Karl-Anthony Towns, the Timberwolves' young star big, has just had the best 3-point shooting season by a center in NBA history, taking into account volume and efficiency - he's shot 41.2% from 3 on 7.9 attempts per game this season. (For reference, Klay Thompson, from 2015-2019, averaged 42.3% from 3 on 7.7 attempts per game.) The only players to shoot more accurately than Towns on at least as many attempts this year were Duncan Robinson (44.5%, 8.4) and Dāvis Bertāns (42.4%, 8.7). KAT's shooting is in rarefied air. Unfortunately for his All-StaAll-NBA prospects, he missed 28 games with injuries, but he was incredible during the 35 games he did play in.
  • - LeDefense: The 2019-20 Lakers are currently 3rd in defensive rating, with a 105.6 Defensive Rating (DRTG), 4.8 points better than league average (i.e. a -4.8 relative DRTG, or rDRTG). This can mostly be attributed to Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) candidate Anthony Davis, but some credit should also go to excellent defensive-minded coach Frank Vogel, and to LeBron himself for being an excellent team defender, communicating switches and cleaning up mistakes with smart rotations. This is only the 2nd time a LeBron team has finished top 3 in defensive rating. The only other time was in 2008-09, when the Cavs finished 3rd, with an rDRTG of -5.9, and LeBron accordingly finished 2nd in DPOY voting. The 2012-13 Heat, where LeBron again finished 2nd in DPOY voting, finished 9th in DRTG, with a -2.2 rDRTG.
  • - "That f---ing Tatum boomed me." LeBron added: Jayson Tatum, the 22-year-old Boston Celtics youngster, broke out as a superstar during the 2nd-half of the 2019-20 season, expanding on the highly encouraging flashes he'd shown during his rookie playoffs (19/4/3 on 58TS%). In his last 23 games, Tatum has averaged 28/7/3 on 49/46/75 shooting (61.1 TS%, +4.7 rTS%), leading Boston to a 15-8 record (53-win pace). He attacked the rim with more vigor (6.0 FTA/game, up from 3.9 prior) and rained highly accurate pull-up jumpers from beyond the arc (8.1 3PA/game on 46 3P%, up from 6.5 3PA and 35 3P% prior), with the increased defensive attention he received as a result of this unprecedented offensive assault enabling him to show flashes of playmaking in the pick-and-roll, or simply make smart reads out of double-teams. Now, is some regression expected? Certainly. Is this still extremely promising for the Celtics' future? Absolutely. (Some good content on Tatum's ascendance - 538, SB Nation, Ringer's KOC)
  • - ♪Clap your hands, everybody♪: The Philadelphia 76ers have definitely had one of the most interesting seasons in the league. While they're safely in the playoffs, their offense remains a hot mess (17th in ORTG), leaning heavily on their defense (6th in DRTG) to lead them to 6th in the East, a far cry from the number 1 seed they were expected to challenge for before the season started. At their best, they have seemed near unstoppable, like when they smoked the aforementioned league-leading Milwaukee Bucks off the floor during their Christmas Day matchup, with Embiid holding probable-MVP Giannis to his worst game of the season while their shooters broke open the Bucks' heralded defense to the tune of 21 3-pointers. At their worst, their offense is barely functional, shrinking against stronger defensive sides with their clunky spacing and inconsistent shot creation. Losing Jimmy Butler has contributed to the latter, while Landry Shamet and especially JJ Redick leaving has essentially ended the Sixers' capable former JJ/Embiid Dribble-Handoff driven half-court offense. PnPnP/DHO specialist versatile big Al Horford has turned in a career-worst season, struggling in the catch-and-shoot role the Sixers have had to play him in due to their lack of shooting elsewhere. Tobias Harris has been inconsistent. Embiid has inexplicably tapered down his scoring load this season, alongside missing his usual 20 games. Simmons has been exceptional on defense but has yet to break through on offense. Perhaps nothing sums up the Sixers chaotic season better than their ridiculously-lopsided home/away record: At home, the Sixers are an incredible, league-leading 27-2 (93% win-%, or a 76-win pace); when playing away, the Sixers are a ghastly 10-24 (29% win-%, or a 24-win pace). Home Sixers would be the favourite for the title, while Away Sixers are a throwback to the Hinkie era. For Sixers fans like myself, endlessly frustrating; for everyone else, it's likely been infinitely entertaining.
  • - DAME TIME ⌚: Damian Lillard has just had his best statistical offensive season ever, with 28.9 points and 7.3 assists per game on 46/39/89 shooting (61.9 TS%, +5.5 rTS%), putting up career highs in scoring, assists, FG%, 3P%, 3PA, eFG%, TS%, PER, and BPM. For the first time in his career, he's leading the entire league in offensive box-plus-minus and offensive win shares, as he tries to drag a depleted Blazers squad to the playoffs. (This is the first time in 3 seasons, by the way, that James Harden is not leading the league in those categories, even as he scores 34.4 ppg on 62TS% and dishes 7.4 apg.) Lillard's incredible floor-raising efforts have nearly worked - the Blazers are top 10 in offensive rating and are +7.7 points better on offense with Dame on the court. It's their defense that's letting them down, which, after losing key wing defenders in free agency (Aminu, Harkless) and losing key defensive bigs to injury (Nurkic, Collins), is now anchored by a hapless defensive frontcourt of Hassan Whiteside and Carmelo Anthony. The Blazers are 27th in the league in defensive rating, worse than the Hornets, Knicks, Pistons, Wolves, and the 15-win Warriors. Perhaps nothing sums up Lillard's and the Blazers' season better than Dame's two 60-point games. (Yes, Dame had 2 60-point games this season.) One came in a 5-point win against the aforementioned 15-win Warriors. One came in a 4-point loss to the Nets. With the Blazers' seemingly likely to miss the playoffs, Lillard's season may be lost to time, but it would be wrong to not mention how good he's played on here, at least.
  • - Bucket-getters: You've probably heard by now that the NBA has had a scoring explosion of sorts these past few years, but this season has been special. Not only do the Dallas Mavericks have the highest raw offensive rating ever, individual scorers have also bloomed like never before. There are 10 players this season averaging above 26ppg (including Booker, AD, Kawhi, Westbrook), 6 players averaging above 28ppg (including Doncic's 28.7ppg and Lillard's 28.9ppg), 4 players averaging over 29ppg (including Giannis and Trae, each averaging 29.6ppg), and 2 players averaging over 30ppg (Beal - 30.5ppg, Harden - 34.4ppg). The type of teams these high-scoring stars are on range from one of the best regular season teams ever (Giannis, on the Bucks), to playoff locks (Doncic's Mavs, Harden's Rockets), to fringe playoff sides (Booker's Suns, Lillard's Blazers, Beal's Wizards), to lottery teams (Trae on the Hawks). Even as recently as last season, there were only 2 players averaging 28ppg - Paul George (28.0ppg) and Harden (36.1ppg). One of the very few comparable seasons to this year in recent history is the 2005-06 season, which famously featured Kobe averaging 35, but also had: 10 players averaging >25ppg, 4 players averaging >29ppg, and 3 players averaging >31ppg - LeBron (31.4ppg), Iverson (33.0ppg), and Kobe (35.4ppg).
  • - "♪I love to have a beer with Duncan♪": No, not the greatest power-forward in NBA history. We're talking about Miami Heat's undrafted 25 y/o SF Duncan Robinson, who was blistering hot from 3 this year, making a scorching 44.8% of his 8.4 3-point attempts per game. Before the stoppage, he was on pace to hit more than 300 3s this season, a feat accomplished only by Stephen Curry and James Harden. His increase of 223 3s from season-to-season is tied with George McCould (1994-96) for the largest in NBA history, and he will likely add to this count when the season resumes. In terms of made 3s per game, Robinson is in rarefied air, with only Curry, Harden, Hield, and George ahead of him, and of that group, only Curry and Robinson shoot over 40% from 3, and only Curry's 2013 season and game-breaking 2016 season are ahead of Robinson in efficiency. These aren't just empty shooting numbers, either, if such a thing is even possible - as SB Nation's Ricky O'Donnell puts it puts it, "Robinson leads the Heat in net-rating at +7.2 when he’s in the game. The Heat’s offense — currently No. 7 in the NBA — jumps up to No. 2 when he’s on the floor. Robinson is also a staple in most of the Heat’s top lineups. He’s in three of Miami’s four best lineups and in seven of the top 11. Miami has also has the top halfcourt offense in the league since the NBA All-Star break. Robinson’s constant motion and shooting ability has its finger prints all over that, too." Miami have unearthed a gem, and someone likely to remain a crucial component of their offense for years to come.
  • - Ultimate Moreyball - You have probably heard that 2013 7th-pick Ben McLemore has made a heartwarming return to NBA relevance, as the newest addition the Houston Rockets's armada of shooters. He's been capable in his role, scoring 9.8 points per game on excellent 40% 3P shooting (solid 6.2 attempts/game), athletic finishes at the rim, and passable defense. What you may not have heard is that McLemore's NBA stats shooting page reads like a Daryl Morey wet dream come to life: Ben has taken the Moreyball approach of "only threes, FTs, and layups" to new and obscene heights - of his 470 field goal attempts, he has attempted exactly zero midrange shots. The rest of the Rockets were no slouches in this department either - Covington had 21 midrange attempts, Tucker had 19, House had 13, Gordon had 9, Rivers had 7, and the NBA's soon-to-be 3-time scoring leader James Harden, with 1386 field goal attempts this season, tried 16 midrange shots this season (1.2% of his total attempts), by far a new career-low. All this anti-tradition black-magic continues to work for Houston - the Rockets rank 2nd in offensive rating. I am both impressed and horrified.
  • - OKC's 3-point guard lineup: A huge reason for OKC's aforementioned elite clutch play has been the delightful, unexpected, and unprecedented success of Coach Billy Donovan's crunch-time 3-PG lineup, with Paul/SchrödeGilgeous-Alexander playing the 1-3, the eternally-underrated Gallinari at 4, and the ever-solid Steven Adams at 5. There are 536 three-man lineup combinations that have logged at least 200 minutes this season, and Paul, Schröder, and Gilgeous-Alexander lead all in net rating, outscoring opponents by 26.7 points per 100 possessions, clocking in slightly ahead of the Clippers' potent Beverley/Kawhi/Harrell triumvirate. This awesome SB Nation article by Michael Pina breaks it down beautifully, but I'll try to include the main points here. 1) CP/SGA/Schröder are all excellent shooters, especially from midrange, which opponent defenses unwisely give up to CP3 and co. in crunch-time. They take advantage of this brilliantly, shooting more midrangers than any other shot type in the 4th quarter, with Oklahoma City’s effective field goal percentage still being a remarkable 58.7 eFG% when all 3 share the floor, which is nearly 3% better than the first-place Milwaukee Bucks. 2) CP/SGA/Schröder are all capable PnR ball-handlers as well, able to hunt mismatches with ruthless efficiency, so this lineup is incredibly rich with capable shot creators and passers. 3) They don't give up anything defensively, with Paul being as solid on defense as he's ever been, Schröder being a pest by hounding ball-handlers, picking them up at 94 feet, SGA's length affording him the ability to guard the post at a passable rate, and Adams stonewalling the rim and gobbling up rebounds. All three guards are all highly switchable, too. The 3-man PG lineup has a defensive rating of 98.6, 3 points better than the Bucks' historic league-leading defense. 4) Gallinari's the most potent shooter on the team, hitting an incredible 41% of his 7.1 3P-attempts/game, and with him being a PF it opens up the floor for the guards to cook from midrange/3 or the paint.
Interesting games/performances from this season (continued from the last post):
    • Jonathan Isaac near 5x5: Perhaps no game has exemplified the young Magic big's unicorn-like skillset better than his 13/10/5/4/6 performance on 69TS% in a 1-point loss against the Dallas Mavericks.
    • Rockets-Wizards, October 30 2019: At the time, both teams were top 5 offenses, and with the Wizards' bottom-ranked defense, this game was always going to be an offensive explosion, and boy did it deliver. The final score: 159-158, Rockets win. Harden scored 59/3/9 on 65 TS%, Beal had 46/6/8 on 86 TS%. It went straight down to the wire, with Houston outscoring 47-41 in the 4th to snatch the win. The two teams combined for 317 points in a game that didn't even have a single overtime. o7.
    • The Raptors just won't die: This was one of the most incredible games of the season. The game was all but over with 2:30 left in the third quarter, when Toronto faced a 30-point deficit after a Dwight Powell layup made it 85-55. Nick Nurse and his squad could have just packed it in, but instead, Kyle Lowry and a bunch of reserves went on a 40-10 run to steal the game. They full-court-pressed a surprised Dallas squad (notably, lacking Luka) for the remainder of the game, spurring turnover after turnover, which, combined with some heroic Kyle Lowry heat-checks from deep, capped an improbable 30-point comeback. Watch The Ringer's awesome recap of the game, here.
    • Indiana hates Ben Simmons: Another game that went down to the wire, but unlike the high-scoring heroics of the Rockets-Wizards matchup, this contest came down to defense. Specifically, the outstanding late-game defensive work of Philadephia's All-Defensive candidate Ben Simmons, who had 3 steals in the final 14 seconds to seal a razor-close win against Indiana. "He's a thief, but in Philly, that's legal!"
    • Utah hates Eric Gordon: The Rockets-Jazz rivalry spans decades, but this latest matchup was never intended to be a contest, with the Rockets' two All-Stars Harden and Westbrook sitting out with rest and/or injury. What Utah couldn't possibly have predicted was Eric Gordon producing his best Harden impersonation yet with 50 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists on 64/55/80 shooting, 81.2 TS%, helped by 20-apiece from House and Rivers to comfortably defeat the Jazz in Utah despite Mitchell and Bojan each dropping 30. Incredible.
    • OKC hates the Lakers but that's nothing new: Much like the previous entry on this list, OKC were expected to bring home a comfortable win with, unusually, both LeBron and AD missing the game. However, LA's merry ragtag bunch of role-players, spearheaded by Kyle Kuzma's 36 points on 70 TS% and the much-maligned Rajon Rondo turning back the clock with a near 21-point triple double, responded to adversity with unbelievable hustle and self-belief, bringing home an unlikely 15 point-win against a very solid Thunder side.
    • Trae Young speaks too soon, and the Heat break some records: The young Hawks All-Star celebrated and mouthed “it’s over” when Atlanta went up six with 59 seconds left on the Heat in an early December matchup after making a brilliant pass to Alex Len for an open dunk. What happened next, well. You know it already. In the next 30 seconds, Butler and Robinson hit consecutive threes to tie the game. The Heat trapped Young when he got the ball in the final minute, and his teammates didn't convert their shots. The Heat went 16-0 in the resulting OT, capping off a 22-0 run to win comfortably, 135-121. Jimmy Butler rubbed salt in the wound on Instagram, but Trae would have the last laugh in their next meeting, dropping 50 points on 75 TS% to bring Atlanta a win. Oh, I forgot to mention: during that first OT matchup, the Heat broke at least eleven personal and team records, with Butler, Nunn, Bam, and Robinson combining for 120 points, nearly outscoring the Hawks (121) by themselves.
    • The Green Mamba vs Board Man: Celtics-Clippers matchups tend to be explosive, and this was no exception. A 2 OT-thriller with Kemba injured, this was a Jayson Tatum showcase, with the 22-year-old lighting up the Clippers defense for 39/9/1 on 72 TS% with Kobe-esque shot-making in the 4th and OTs, and excellent individual defense on Kawhi (28/11/4, 47 TS%) all night long to make for easily one of his best performances of the season

2020.04.02 18:58 ParsnipPizza The Ultimate Crapshoot, Revisited

In 2014, on the Grantland website, on the eve of the 2014 NBA draft and the preceding lottery, basketball writer Bill Simmons wrote “The Ultimate Crapshoot”, a long but fun excuse to redraft every NBA draft from 1995. He also used it to prove the sheer, well, crapshoot, with tremendous busts coming at 1 and especially 2 and 3, and future Hall of Famers in the mid to late 1st and even the second round. Even 5+ years later, I revisit the column every so often, it came out as I became a die hard NBA fan and I obsessed over the upcoming 2014 draft, with Andrew Wiggins headlining. In this same look to the past, Bill called that draft “The most promising since 1984” and the rest of the vaunted staff of Grantland seemed to concur. It'd be cliche to say how everything's changed: Grandland has been shuttered, Andrew Wiggins would never play a single game for the team that won the #1, and a new style, heralded by a new dynasty, overtook the league. Now, in deep quarantine, and the Ringer going all in for the 1990s redrafts, I dug out my original, 2018 era draft of a Simmons-style redraft. When I first wrote this, the players raved about in the article were starting their 5th seasons, now they’ve likely seen the end of their 6th. Thus, I will endeavor to update Bill's listing(I'll call it TUC from here), first with the then fresh draft years of 2012 and 2013, and then continue on, to the present day. For these reranked drafts, I'll list the best and worst Simmons predictions and for all of them, I'll give my thoughts.
For future reference, I'll use the same system Simmons used, with a spot on the list for starters and the 5 asterisk system denoting how good I've judged the player to be.
From TUC:
The meaning of the asterisks one more time:
• Superduperstar *****
• All-Timer ****
• Franchise Guy ***
• All-Star **
• Quality Starter*
• Starter (no asterisk)
Starter for me has become very broad, as in a new tanking era, way more players are “startable”, so I tried to lean more towards “Starters for a playoff team.” Also, THESE ARE ALL MY OPINIONS, feel free to argue for or against certain players being higher or lower. Here we go!
2012 Draft
  1. Anthony Davis (1) ****
  2. Damian Lillard (6)****
  3. Draymond Green (35)***
  4. Bradley Beal (3)***
  5. Khris Middleton (39)**
  6. Andre Drummond (9)*
  7. Harrison Barnes (7)*
  8. Jae Crowder (34)
  9. Evan Fournier (20)
Lottery Whiffs: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (2), Thomas Robinson (5), Kendall Marshall (13)
Best Prediction: Draymond Green on the starters list prior to 2015. Stat wise, he doesn't take off until the next year.
Worst Prediction: Terrence Ross as the 5th best player from the draft has not lasted well. He did get traded for a horse though.
Thoughts: Of the “Too Early” group, they each went in different directions. Poor MKG has been hurt, remaining an avatar of Charlotte futility while also still being a half decent bench guy. Robinson has become a trademark Kings bust. Rivers somehow has had a better career than both, becoming a fringe but not awful starter with the Clippers, even as everyone on the team, even his dad, began to gripe over his role. I couldn’t decide on Lillard being either an all timer or a franchise guy in 2018-19, but his 2019 playoff heroics and the near 30 point run this season have earned him that 4th star (Plus I didn’t want the state of Oregon to airstrike my house). Jae Crowder and Khris Middleton's sudden appearance on this list, compared to TUC, amplifies the big changes that took place between the 2012 draft and now, with shooting and versatile defense becoming defining aspects of the NBA and the dynasty Draymond would soon contribute a DPOY to.
2013 Draft
  1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (15) ****
  2. Victor Oladipo (2)***
  3. Rudy Golbert (27)***
  4. CJ McCollum (10)**
  5. Steven Adams (12)*
  6. Otto Porter (3)*
  7. Dennis Schroder (17)
  8. Andre Roberson (26)
  9. Tim Hardaway Jr (24)
  10. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (8)
Lottery Whiffs: Anthony Bennett(1), Michael Carter-Williams (11)
Best Prediction: Giannis at #2 only a year in is pretty good.
Worst Prediction: Ah, Michael Carter-Williams. It's fair to say we probably never see another player go from ROTY to bust so quickly. Also, Anthony Bennett as a starter makes me chuckle.
Thoughts: This draft began as the Worst Ever, but eventually a few gems shined through. Giannis is the most obvious one but Gobert and McCollum help lead a solid class of mid to late round stars, from a class whose top picks have become legendary in their underachieving. The decisions made in this one still blow my mind: in what universe do Alex Len and Cody Zeller go back to back, ahead of CJ McCollumn no less? How do Robert Covington and Seth Curry go undrafted? Pretty much every team other than Milwaukee just screams “Whyyyyy” when seeing this one in hindsight. From Bill’s early analysis, all four of the “Too Early's” busted or fell apart (Nerlens Noel in particular will probably always be haunted by the number 70 million), while funny enough, “Possible Lottery whiffs” Kelly Olynyk, Otto Porter and even KCP to a lesser extent have all seen solid minutes as on-off starters and in crunch time roles in the playoffs. Roberson sneaks on for his All Defense nod. Definitely not the dumpster fire of a class many thought around 2014 but it certainly bore bitter fruit for more teams then not. I deliberated on KCP a few times, ultimately I kept him on from his time on the Pistons as a decent, if not overly impressive starter.
Random shout-out: While we’re on the 2013 draft, of the non-All Stars, my favorite career trajectory might be Steven Adams: he’s picked with the centerpiece first rounder Houston gave up for Harden, he starts really slow, then suddenly morphs into everyone’s favorite kiwi and a fun and effective center on the 2016, then 2017 Thunder. He’s done so well and has gained such a following, no Thunder fans (at least that I know) are super bitter about him being the prize of the trade.
Now, we come to the draft Simmons and Grantland wrote extensively about: the fabled 2014 “As loaded as 1984” class.
2014 Draft
  1. Joel Embiid (3)***
  2. Nikola Jokic (41)***
  3. Andrew Wiggins (1)*
  4. Zach Lavine (13)*
  5. Clint Capela (25)*
  6. Spencer Dinwiddie (38)*
  7. Aaron Gordon (4)*
  8. Marcus Smart (6)
  9. Gary Harris (14)
  10. Jusuf Nurkic (16)
  11. Joe Harris (33)
  12. Julius Randle (7)
Lottery Whiffs: Jabari Parker (2), Dante Exum (5), Nik Stauskas (8), Noah Vonleh (9)
Thoughts: Turns out the draft as talented as 1984 had the injury luck of Sam Bowie, with poor Parker now on 5 teams in 6 years, Embiid missing really the first two years before blossoming as Sam Hinkie’s best draft pick and Jusuf Nurkic’s injuries costing the Blazers roughly 3 playoff wins. Really, the lottery talent was pretty standard for a normal draft, but a bunch of low 1st and 2nd round guys really blew by expectations. Add on Wiggins, probably the most polarizing #1 pick, the Nurkic-Jokic trade that worked out for both centers, and you certainly got an all time bizarre-in-retrospective draft, though not the second coming of 1984 as Simmons and his writers believed. The guys who were big prospects either got hurt or never lived up to expectations, other than Embiid, while a possibly overweight Serbian man leapfrogged (or I suppose nutmegged)all of them to become a superstar.
2015 Draft
  1. Karl Anthony-Towns (1)***
  2. Devin Booker (13)***
  3. DeAngelo Russell (3)**
  4. Kristaps Porzingis (4)**
  5. Myles Turner (14)*
  6. Kelly Oubre Jr (15)
  7. Josh Richardson (40)
  8. Montress Harrell (32)
  9. Justise Winslow (10)
  10. Terry Rozier (16)
Lottery Whiffs: Jahlil Okafor (3), Mario Hezonja (5), Stanley Johnson (8)
Thoughts: I’m cheating with Harrell: he doesn’t really start but he’s been a massive part of the Clippers the last 2 years, Clipps fans feel free to overrule, but I judged his career to be solid enough that he gets his spot, even if he’s not a proper “starter for a playoff team.” Much like Marcus Smart, he doesn’t start but ends the game in top 5 in minutes. Looking at this list as a whole, this one is a rare type of draft, where the rotation and starter level talent is more plentiful than the All-Star talent. Okafor is an iconic bust, and the subject of many, many “Was it Hinkie’s pick, or the owners?” arguments. But give Jahlil credit, there was a glimmer of hope, at least he wasn’t the punchline of an entire, iconic Game of Zones episode as Hezonja was. Really, the main theme of this one is the Devin Booker Memorial Regret list, with a ton of the lottery guys picked ahead of Phoenix’s favorite son/hostage failing to live up to expectations. I went back and forth almost 20 times on guys like Willie Cauley-Stein and Trey Lyles on whether or not they count as busts, as they remain in the league but absolutely would never be picked in the draft if it were done again. Other people could quibble with Booker’s position (Russell has led a playoff team), but as a Celtics fan I am in no position to complain And yes, as Celtics fan I claim license to put Terry Rozier on this list for his run as the starting PG for the Celtics 2018 playoff run, and granting us probably the greatest crossover in team history.
Random Shout-out: Crying selfie kid remains a draft legend
2016 Draft
  1. Ben Simmons (1)***
  2. Pascal Siakam (27)***
  3. Brandon Ingram (2)**
  4. Domantas Sabonis (11)**
  5. Jaylen Brown (3)*
  6. Buddy Hield (6)*
  7. Jamal Murray (7)*
  8. Malcolm Brogdon (36)*
  9. Caris LeVert (20)
  10. Taurean Prince (12)
Lottery Whiffs: Dragan Bender (4), Thon Maker (10), Georgios Papagiannis (13)
Thoughts: In 2017, a year out, KOC called this draft a “role players draft”, which remains hilarious as its produced several all stars and quality starters but not nearly as many rotation and starters as 2015 or 2014. We’re in new territory with this draft, it's the first one I’m doing where it’s harder to definitively label players, as quite a few guys in this draft (including Bender) are on second or third try teams. This was a big late bloomer class, as guys like Siakam, Sabonis and Brown started slow or were buried in the depth chart, Ingram and Simmons were picked apart early before really developing. This all left Brogdon as the class’ Rookie of the Year, who might be the worst ROTY ever (in the worst ROTY class no less, I’m pretty sure I could get 10 first place ROTY votes going against Dario Saric and 50 games of Joel Embiid). Only 4 of the top 14 picks stayed with the team that drafted them, so not many teams got to reap the rewards of their pick, even when the guy finally did develop (Sabonis is a perfect example, traded twice before he recently got an AS nod). On a less Kings and Magic bashing note, this draft in the moment was also a ton of fun: the “Celtics Dunn fucked up” jokes that have aged beautifully as a Celtics fan the whole Jaylen pick thread is glorious in hindsight , everyone freaking out about Deyonta Davis dropping, the Magic dealing 2 All Stars for half a season of Serge Ibaka, just an all around exciting night.
Random Shout Out: Jamal Murray was the exception to the late bloomer rule, he’s been pretty solid since year 2 as Jokic’s lieutenant, he’s been a solid starter for some good Nuggets teams. Nuggets gave him a big role pretty much by the time his rookie year was over, and he took off from there.
2017 NBA Draft
  1. Jayson Tatum (3)***
  2. Donovan Mitchell (13)***
  3. Bam Adebayo (14)**
  4. De’Aaron Fox (5)*
  5. John Collins (19)*
  6. Lonzo Ball (2)
  7. Lauri Markkanen (7)
  8. OG Anunoby (23)
  9. Dillon Brooks (45)
  10. Jarrett Allen (22)
  11. Luke Kennard (12)
  12. Kyle Kuzma (27)
For this and the remaining drafts I’ll do new bust categories, since we’re really getting into the present day, where several players still have time to turn around their slow starts
Lottery Whiffs: Frank Ntilikina (8), Dennis Smith Jr (9)
Running out of time: Josh Jackson (4), Jonathan Issac (6), Malik Monk (11)
Markelle Fultz: Markelle Fultz (1)
Thoughts: Look, Fultz is is one of the biggest busts of a #1 pick we may ever see. Incredibly unique issues and situation, even if he turns around with Orlando which everyone including me is rooting for, he’ll be a bust who found a second career, not a bust who turned it around, if that makes any sense. Philly passed on 12 good to great players (and as of now, 3 All Stars) to pick someone who played less than 40 games for them. Bust. After the eye bleedingly bad 2016 ROTY contest, we got an all timer where Jayson Tatum playing 30 minutes and scoring 20 for an ECF team is a distant third. In addition, guys like Bam have since become huge parts of good playoff teams, while Lauri, Fox, and OG still have a ton of potential to develop. Of course, as in 2015, we have the return of the Memorial Regret List, this time Donovan Mitchell edition, with our biggest culprits being the Knicks, Hornets, Suns and Pistons. At least Detroit got a decent guard in Kennard; of course the Knicks end up with the 2 big bust guards of the draft, and of course the Hornets overrule their coach and take Monk over Mitchell.
Random Shoutout: I’m happy Lonzo’s managed to not only find a new team so I can root for him, but he’s also managed to distance himself from his father and the BBB mess, it was just a giant circus that never helped him. I’m a Marcus Smart fan, I appreciate “you have to watch him to see his impact” guys.
2018 Draft
  1. Luka Dončić (3)****
  2. Tre Young (5)**
  3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (11)*
  4. Deandre Ayton (1)*
  5. Jaren Jackson Jr (4)
  6. Miles Bridges (12)
  7. Colin Sexton (8)
  8. Mitchell Robinson (36)
  9. Wendell Carter Jr (7)
Running out of time: Marvin Bagley (2), Mo Bamba (6), Kevin Knox (9)
Lottery Whiffs: None yet but money is on Bamba as the big one.
Thoughts: This one is always gonna be dominated by the trade, but there’s a ton of promising players in this draft, even Bagley who hasn’t looked bad, he’s just one injury from his body growing crutches. JJJ is part of the core in Memphis, Sexton is a decent piece to build on in Cleveland, Mitchell Robinson has become the newest hostage at MSG playing for a terrible coach who can’t develop talent (same for Wendell Carter Jr), and SGA has become a fan favorite with his fellow Musketeers Paul and Schroder in OKC. Honestly, we’re finally in a draft where it’s still a little too early to have solid opinions on quite a few guys. All you need to know is that the Kings whiffed on can’t miss players, which you really should’ve known already.
Random shoutout: TIMELORD!
And finally, the way too early 2019 redraft!
2019 Draft
  1. Ja Morant (2)**
  2. Zion Williamson (1)***
  3. RJ Barrett (3)*
  4. Coby White (7)
Lottery Whiffs: C’mon man, they haven’t even played 70 games
Thoughts: Like many people, I thought of Morant and Williamson, whoever got the 8th seed should be Rookie of the year, and as we remain sheltering in place, Morant is the ROTY by a hair. Both are incredibly promising talents, and despite the very short list, there are a ton of guys who have shown flashes in ~60 games (Hunter, Reddish, Hayes for example). I’m totally prepared to be in 2023 threads about how I missed MVP Cameron Johnson.
Summary: We still have no idea how to draft or predict who is gonna be good unless we do, which is to say not much has changed since 2014 when Bill Simmons took Michael Carter-Williams over Rudy Gobert.
