Münecat on evolutionary psychology and the tragic state of science; misandry and irrational fears in sexual violence stats
2024.05.20 23:21 eli_ashe Münecat on evolutionary psychology and the tragic state of science; misandry and irrational fears in sexual violence stats
Münecat’s,
I Debunked Evolutionary Psychology; dig the musical score to this one btw.
Münecat’s video going over how the use and abuse of data and science to mislead people, is the same sort of problem that is being pointed out regarding sexual violence and domestic violence as it pertains to misandry and irrational fears.
I’d say her video is worth a watch for folks in this crowd as it has a lot of info in general as to how these sorts of things are used and abused. tho it is three hours long, so i'm going to provide something a bit shorter here.
I want to note that münecat points a lot towards problems with small sample sizes, which is a real problem, and oft imo glosses over too quickly the problems that stem from definitional biases, e.g. tailoring questions to suit one’s needs and purposes. She does mention them, I just want to really highlight that aspect because it is, I think, far more the problem with stats on sexual violence and domestic violence. Those areas are deeply gender coded in a misandristic way that reflects irrational fears bout men. Tho it is tru that if anyone bothers to really dig into the stats on those topics, you’re also going to find a shit ton of studies that suffer from the small sample size problem, the self-referential to one’s own work problem, the no replicability problem, and the we only speak to rich liberal university students problem.
Of those, I’d say that the ‘self-referential to one’s own work’ and the ‘we only speak to rich liberal university students’ are likely particularly damaging problems for studies and surveys on sexual violence and domestic violence, as the universities are the primary source for the ‘yes means yes’ puritanical consent cultists’ views that are undermining what the definitions of sexual violence and domestic violence even mean.
It’s pretty much exactly like asking a group of puritan cult members how many punny sexual offenses were committed, and they feed back to you ‘all 451 percent, just like our cult master informed us’.
I’m going to briefly go over two sections of münecat’s video that directly touch on the issues of misandry and irrational fears bout men in our understanding and stats of sexual violence and domestic violence.
Gender Similarities
In the section ‘gender similarities’, münecat notes that these kinds of scientific studies surrounding gender also tend to hurt men. Saying something like [due to overestimating the dangers that men pose; irrational fears of men] ‘for every woman fearful of being raped by a man, there is a man in a dark alleyway desperately trying to convince her that he’s not actually interested in raping her.’
Which is tru. Both the people there are being harmed by the rhetoric, but be clear that the rhetoric is deeply misandristic in form.
The section has a bit more to say on the topic, I'd suggest watching that section if the whole video is too long.
Note that judith butler says something similar, saying ‘we ought not be treating our sons, fathers, and brothers as if they were all potential rapists’. She doesn't say this, but she also should have added 'because doing so is deeply misandristic and irrational.'
Idk that either butler or münecat would necessarily be on board with the concerns bout the 451 percenters in the NISVS and the Istanbul Convention On Gendered Violence, but they are definitely echoing it witfully or not. If you take münecat’s concerns seriously, and you should, you also ought be taking the concerns bout the 451 percenters seriously, which you should be.
Note, not all feminists agree with the misandristic and puritanical bs that is permeating the topics of sexual violence and domestic violence. Targeting the NISVS and the Istanbul Convention On Gendered Violence are both excellent strategies to correct for those problems.
Why The Selfish Gene Is Wrong
In the ‘why the selfish gene is wrong’ section [which it is, it obviously is actually], münecat spends some time pointing out how folks erroneously graph on to skin color suppositions of traits, because skin color is an obvious characteristic which we can, erroneously, use to explain some less obvious trait. That’s called racism.
Sexism does a very similar thing, and gendered traits, or sexed traits (not parsing those out super much here atm) are relatively obvious. So the sexist, much like the racist, takes less obvious traits and erroneously graphs them on to the more obvious traits of sex. Münecat’s point is not my own here, but she is explaining the same kinds of things as are applicable to sexual violence and domestic violence in particular. Other things too, but here I am focusing on those aspects.
We take traits of masculinity, say physical strength, and erroneously graph on to them somewhat less obvious traits, like aggression. Women are, arguably at any rate, just as aggressive as men, but how that is expressed differs and because ‘men strong women weak’, we associate violence with men, so men must be aggressive.
It’s only logical!
This has a far greater impact on points regarding sexual violence, simply it that the association of masculinity with sexual violence is so prevalent, even tho there is no reason to suppose and very little evidence to suppose that men actually commit more sexual violence than women. We simply punish men and don’t punish women. We simply count men’s sexual violence and don’t count women’s sexual violence. In the currents, to be super clear on this point, any and all data on the matter is so biased that it isn’t really evidence of much of anything.
We, in other words, code the terms of sexual violence to masculinity. Taking a less obvious trait, sexual violence, and erroneously graphing it on to a more obvious trait, masculinity.
It’s entirely bs tho. As has been pointed
out here,
and here,
and here,
and here,
and here, among the many places that these things have been pointed out, women do the exact same behaviors or at times some feminine version of the exact same behavior that would be considered a sexual violence if a man did it, and it simply is not so considered if a woman did it. If we look at a stat that shows more men than women are arrested for sexual crimes, bout the only thing this
can’t be interpreted as is that men actually definitely commit more sexual crimes. Cause we literally only counted men.
The laws are not written to include feminine sexual crimes, they haven’t been so written for as far as I know throughout history for the most part at any rate, when they are written in gender neutral ways they are still de facto enforced to only target men, when data is gathered on them the questions used are gender geared to count masculine coded sexual violence, when ethics surrounding sexual violence are considered that too is coded to be bout masculine coded sexual violence, when people speak up bout sexual violence womens voices are allowed and amplified while mens voices are disallowed and hushed due to the circle rubbed out belief that they are a threat, and so on.
And crime data is likely the
least misandrist set of data available of the subject, as at least with that data there is a judicial system in place that tries to suss out the false claims. Which ought be terrifying for anyone familiar with the stats there.
All the surveys and circle rubbed out beliefs merely work to reinforce each other, none of which even touches on the puritanical and fascistic bs that also permeate the stats on sexual violence in particular.
For that, see:
The Bear or the Man, Being In The Woods With A Pig And A Woman The basic take down of these kinds of interlocking puritanical and fascistic beliefs and their reflections within the stats on sexual violence. Including the fairly standard feminist, gender, and racial theorists’ criticisms of said puritanical and fascistic beliefs. Tho here we are focusing on the misandry, puritanism, irrational fears, and racism
Historically it is integral to fascistic narratives to dehumanize a people by targeting the male populations with rhetoric surrounding supposed sexual violence.
The Puritanism of The CDC And Other Fascistic Fallacies Of The 451 Percenters A more specific set of criticisms of NISVS and by extension the Istanbul Convention On Gendered Sexual Violence. Highlights the use of aesthetics in the stats to make ethically obligatory kinds of claims, which again, is fascism.
We cannot be so unwise as to correctly note that historically fascism focuses on a specific sexual and familial forms and elevates them to ethically obligatory stature, and yet fail to recognize that it isn't bout any specific sexual or familial form. It is bout the raising of an aesthetical ethical concern (sexual and familial form, preferences), to that of an ethically obligatory concern.
That is just called fascism.

2024.05.20 02:07 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 2)
| https://preview.redd.it/va70nf0l3h1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=021d936ee0a724ca428d8559f5823592404d1822 As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The first part was posted yesterday. Million Dollar Baby (2004)¨ "Beyond his silence, there is a past. Beyond her dreams, there is a feeling. Beyond hope, there is a memory. Beyond their journey, there is a love." His 25th film. Based on stories from the 2000 collection Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner by F.X. Toole, it stars Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. The film follows Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald, an underdog amateur boxer who is helped by an underappreciated boxing trainer to achieve her dream of becoming a professional. Paul Haggis wrote the script on spec, and it took four years to sell it. The film was stuck in development hell for years before it was shot. Several studios rejected the project even when Eastwood signed on as actor and director. Even Warner Bros., Eastwood's longtime home base, would not agree to a $30 million budget. Eastwood persuaded Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg to put up half the budget (as well as handle foreign distribution), with Warner Bros. contributing the rest. The film had an incredible run in limited release, breaking many records for Eastwood's career. It eventually earned a fantastic $216 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film ever. It received critical acclaim, and it was named as one of his greatest films. It won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (for Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (for Freeman). Eastwood became one of the very few directors to make two films to win both Best Picture and Best Director. - Budget: $30,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $100,492,203. ($166.8 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $216,763,646.
Flags of Our Fathers (2006) "A single shot can end the war." His 26th film. Based on the book written by James Bradley and Ron Powers, it stars Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, John Benjamin Hickey, John Slattery, Paul Walker, Jamie Bell, Barry Pepper, Robert Patrick and Neal McDonough. The film follows the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima, the five Marines and one Navy corpsman who were involved in raising the flag on Iwo Jima, and the after effects of that event on their lives. The film received positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office with just $65 million against its huge $90 million budget. - Budget: $90,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $33,602,376. ($52.2 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $65,900,249.
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) "The completion of the Iwo Jima saga." His 27th film. Based on Picture Letters from Commander in Chief by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, it stars Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryō Kase and Shidō Nakamura. It's a companion film to Flags of Our Fathers, and portrays the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers. In the process of reading about the Japanese perspective of the war for Flags of Our Fathers, in particular General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, Eastwood decided to film a companion piece with this film, which was shot entirely in Japanese. The film was shot back-to-back, starting filming just one month after Flags of Our Fathers wrapped filming. Despite being seen as the least accessible of both films, this film was much more successful at the box office than the previous film (including a colossal $42 million in Japan alone). It also received critical acclaim, particularly for how it handed the depiction of good and evil from both sides. It received 4 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. - Budget: $19,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $13,756,082. ($21.3 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $68,673,228.
Changeling (2008) "To find her son, she did what no one else dared." His 28th film. It stars Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich, and is based on real-life events, specifically the 1928 Wineville Chicken Coop murders in Mira Loma, California. It follows a woman united with a boy who she realizes is not her missing son. When she tries to demonstrate that to the police and city authorities, she is vilified as delusional, labeled as an unfit mother and confined to a psychiatric ward. The film earned $113 million worldwide, barely breaking even at the box office. The film received mixed reviews, but Jolie received praise for her performance. She was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress. - Budget: $55,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $35,739,802. ($52 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $113,398,237.
Gran Torino (2008) "Ever come across somebody you shouldn't have messed with?" His 29th film. It stars Eastwood, and follows Walt Kowalski, a recently widowed Korean War veteran alienated from his family and angry at the world, whose young neighbor, Thao Vang Lor, is pressured by his cousin into stealing Walt's prized Ford Torino for his initiation into a gang. Walt thwarts the theft and subsequently develops a relationship with the boy and his family. The film received great reviews, as well as praise from the Hmong community. It ended up becoming a sleeper hit, and it earned $270 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film. - Budget: $25,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $148,095,302. ($215.6 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $269,958,228.
Invictus (2009) "His people needed a leader. He gave them a champion." His 30th film. It stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Following the aftermath of the apartheid, President Nelson Mandela decides to unite his people by supporting a rugby team in their bid to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup. The film earned $122 million worldwide, barely breaking even. It received positive reviews, and Freeman and Damon received Oscar nominations for their performances. - Budget: $50,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $37,491,364. ($54.7 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $122,426,792.
Hereafter (2010) "Touched by death. Changed by life." His 31st film. It stars Matt Damon, Cécile de France, Bryce Dallas Howard, Lyndsey Marshal, Jay Mohr and Thierry Neuvic. An American with a special connection to the afterlife, a woman with a near-death experience and a young English boy, who lost his loved ones, cross paths in an effort to find closure in their lives. Despite mixed reviews, it managed to earn $107 million, turning a small profit. - Budget: $50,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $32,746,941. ($47 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $106,956,330.
J. Edgar (2011) "The most powerful man in the world." His 32nd film. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, and Judi Dench, and follows the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, focusing on Hoover's life from the 1919 Palmer Raids onward. The film received mixed reviews; while DiCaprio received praise, the technical aspects of the film were criticized. It earned $84 million, making it a box office success, but far below what DiCaprio usually makes at the box office. - Budget: $35,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $37,306,030. ($52 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $84,920,539.
Jersey Boys (2014) "Everybody remembers it how they need to." His 33rd film. Base on the 2004 jukebox musical, it stars John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza and Christopher Walken, and tells the story of the musical group The Four Seasons. It received mixed reviews, with praise for the musical numbers but criticism for the narrative and runtime, and failed at the box office. - Budget: $40,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $47,047,013. ($62.3 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $67,647,013.
American Sniper (2014) "The most lethal sniper in U.S. history." His 34th film. It is based on the memoir by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice, and stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller. The film follows the life of Kyle, who became the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, 160 of which were officially confirmed by the Department of Defense. While Kyle was celebrated for his military successes, his tours of duty took a heavy toll on his personal and family life. In 2012, Cooper and Warner Bros. bought the rights to the memoir. Cooper wanted Chris Pratt to star as Kyle, but WB told him they would only greenlight the film if he stars in it. After Kyle's murder in 2013, Steven Spielberg signed to direct. Spielberg had read Kyle's book, though he desired to have a more psychological conflict present in the screenplay so an "enemy sniper" character could serve as the insurgent sharpshooter who was trying to track down and kill Kyle. Spielberg's ideas contributed to the development of a lengthy screenplay approaching 160 pages. Due to Warner Bros.' budget constraints, Spielberg felt he could not bring his vision of the story to the screen. So Eastwood was brought in to direct. The film attained a solid, but not extraordinary response from critics. It also attracted some controversy over its portrayal of both the Iraq War and Kyle himself. The box office though? To say that the film had a fantastic run would be selling it short. It opened on Christmas Day in 4 theaters, and it earned a huge $633,456 ($158,364 PTA). But the following weekend, it actually increased despite playing at the same amount of theaters, adding $676,909. That translated to a $169,227 PTA, becoming the highest second weekend PTA in history for a live-action film. And on its third weekend, it earned $579,518 ($144,879 PTA), becoming the first film to have three weekends above $100,000 PTA. In the 22 days it played in just 4 theaters, it earned $3,424,778. On its first wide weekend, the film shook the industry by opening with a colossal $89 million. That was almost as much as the other 2014 blockbusters, and given that the film didn't have 3D pricing, it's very likely it sold far more tickets than them. It broke the January opening weekend record by twice as much, and the second biggest for an R-rated title. With insane word of mouth ("A+" on CinemaScore), this film had the legs. In less than one week, it became Eastwood's highest grossing film domestically. On its second weekend, it dropped just 28% and made $64 million, which was the biggest second weekend for an R-rated film (a record it still maintains) and crossed $200 million domestically. And by March, the film overtook The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 ($334 million) as the highest grossing 2014 film in North America. After an insane run in theaters, it closed with a gigantic $350 million domestically, which made it the second highest grossing R-rated film in North America. Overseas, it was also very strong, and it made a huge $547 million worldwide. It was easily Eastwood's highest grossing film, even adjusted for inflation. One of the greatest box office runs in recent memory. It received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Cooper, ultimately winning one for Best Sound Editing. The biggest surprise of the 2010s? Perhaps. Cause let's face it, when 2014, did any of you had this as the top film of the year? Or even in the Top 20? Please. - Budget: $59,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $350,159,020. ($463.7 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $547,659,020.
Sully (2016) "The untold story behind the miracle on the Hudson." His 35th film. Based on the autobiography Highest Duty by Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles, it stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, Autumn Reeser, Holt McCallany, and Jamey Sheridan. The film follows Sullenberger's 2009 emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived and the subsequent publicity and investigation. The film received strong reviews, and earned over $240 million worldwide, becoming one of his highest grossing films. - Budget: $60,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $125,070,033. ($163.3 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $243,870,033.
The 15:17 to Paris (2018) "The real heroes." His 36th film. Based on the autobiography by Jeffrey E. Stern, Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos, it stars Stone, Sadler, and Skarlatos as themselves and follows the trio through life leading up to and including their stopping of the 2015 Thalys train attack. Despite choosing Kyle Gallner, Jeremie Harris and Alexander Ludwig as the leads, Eastwood decided to cast the heroes to play themselves, which was met with confusion as they lacked acting experience. And that was reflected on the final film; it received negative reviews for its acting, and it bombed at the box office. - Budget: $30,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $36,276,286. ($45.2 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $57,176,286.
The Mule (2018) "Nobody runs forever." His 37th film. Based on the 2014 The New York Times article The Sinaloa Cartel's 90-Year-Old Drug Mule by Sam Dolnick, it stars Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest, and Andy García. Due to financial issues, horticulturist Earl Stone becomes a courier for a drug cartel. Slowly, he grows closer to his estranged family, but his illegal activities threaten much more than his life. It received good reviews (although some questioned its story and tone), and earned over $173 million worldwide. - Budget: $50,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $103,804,407. ($129.6 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $174,804,407.
Richard Jewell (2019) "The world will know his name and the truth." His 38th film. The film stars Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde. The film depicts the July 27 Centennial Olympic Park bombing and its aftermath, as security guard Richard Jewell finds a bomb during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and alerts authorities to evacuate, only to later be wrongly accused of having placed the device himself. The film received positive reviews, but several journalists criticized the critical portrayal of the reporter that first accused Jewell: Kathy Scruggs (specifically for trading sex for stories). The film marked another commercial failure for Eastwood. - Budget: $45,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $22,345,542. ($27.4 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $44,645,542.
Cry Macho (2021) "A story of being lost and found." His 39th film. Based on the novel by N. Richard Nash, it stars Eastwood and Dwight Yoakam. Set in 1979, it follows a former rodeo star hired to reunite a young boy in Mexico with his father in the United States. Nash tried to get this film made all the way since 1970s, but no studio was willing to pick it up. He restructured his films as a novel, was successful and studios were now interested. There were a few candidates for the leading role; Robert Mitchum, Roy Scheider, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Eastwood himself. Arnie was willing to star in the film back in 2003, but put it on hold when he was elected Governor. He was set to star after leaving office, but the project was scrapped after his affair scandal was made known. In 2020, Eastwood signed to return. The film received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and acting. It was also a huge flop at the box office, and marked Eastwood's least attended film as leading man. David Zaslav criticized the studio's decision to finance the film. Warner executives allegedly said that although they knew the film was unlikely to turn a profit, they felt indebted to Eastwood for his decades-long relationship with the studio and his consistent ability to deliver films under budget and on time. - Budget: $33,000,000.
- Domestic gross: $10,310,734. ($11.9 million adjusted)
- Worldwide gross: $16,510,734.

That's $90,684,289 per film. The Verdict Insanely profitable. Even the bombs do not taint this kind of reputation. Eastwood has made all these films under budget and never past its deadline. That's something that has to be treasured for studios, no wonder he's been staying with Warner Bros. since 1976. His ability to get films ready in short notice is impressive; Richard Jewell started filming in June and it was on theaters in December. One of the most impressive actors who transitioned into directors. You can tell that Sergio Leone and Don Siegel taught him well. Now of course, his method of directing can also have its setbacks: he's often known for not asking for multiple takes and he skips rehearsals. So that means the performances of his actors aren't always the best they could've done. Which is why, despite making some masterpieces or fantastic films, he's also made a few films with weak technical aspects: poor lighting ( J. Edgar), questionable logic ( Cry Macho), obvious props (the fake baby in American Sniper), and some bad acting ( Gran Torino and The 15:17 to Paris). At the same time, it's clear he can also get extraordinary performances through these methods; Gene Hackman, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman won Oscars for starring in his films. He also proved old age doesn't prevent you from continuing to work. He's turning 94 in a few weeks, and he's still directing films. Manoel de Oliveira directed films until he was 104, so perhaps we still have a few more years with Eastwood behind the camera. P.S. Ever since I started this series, there's been suggestions that I should do "Actors at the Box Office" multiple times. While the idea is intriguing, that doesn't seem feasible for me. I'd have to categorize whether the actor is leading, supporting, original IP, adaptation, remakes, etc. Besides, with the continuing decline of star power, it's tough to decide what actor is truly moving the needle at the box office. That's why I'm making solely "Directors at the Box Office", because the director is responsible for the production. If the film succeeds, the director will get credit. And if the film flops, the director will be blamed. So this is the closest you'll get to "Actors at the Box Office". Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section. The next director will be Robert Zemeckis. One of the biggest falls from grace. I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. It had to be a controversial filmmaker. Well, we'll later talk about... Zack Snyder. Oh, BoxOffice chose fuego 🔥 This is the schedule for the following four: Week | Director | Reasoning | May 20-26 | Robert Zemeckis | Can we get old Zemeckis back? | May 27-June 2 | Richard Donner | An influential figure of the 70s and 80s. | June 3-9 | Ang Lee | What happened to Lee? | June 10-16 | Zack Snyder | RIP Inbox. | Who should be next after Snyder? That's up to you. submitted by SanderSo47 to boxoffice [link] [comments] |

2024.05.18 04:04 Etek023 Advice - do a minor during PhD
Berkeley offers a DE in Computational & Genomic Biology for PhD students. I'm in the second year of my PhD and I have a background in molecular biology and my PhD is in metabolism. I will have to analyze a lot of data during my PhD (it's not the focus, but a good part of the project requires analysis of proteomes and gene expression). I was thinking about taking this "minor" in Computational & Genomic Biology, however, it is strongly suggested that students participate in a bootcamp before classes start, but it costs $300. I don't think my PI will pay for it, but he's cool with me taking a couple of extra classes. It will be very difficult for me to pay the 300 dollars for the bootcamp, but I may have no choice but to pay out of pocket. My question is: do you think this minor is worth doing? I've heard colleagues talking about the value that companies give to those who have some background (formal, not just experience) that relates to big data analysis. Will spending those 300 dollars and taking the classes now really bring me any extra benefits in the future?
I appreciate any suggestions

2024.05.17 19:38 tdmatchasin Shows to Know: 2015 Bluecoats - Experimenting with speakers & soundscapes in different areas of the marching field
This show happened in
2015. Link -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ09RF_Axpk Experimenting with "soundscapes" on the field has happened many times in drum corps history. Obviously at first with brass choirs. Sometimes it happens naturally due to where members are placed on the field, sometimes it's intentionally part of the design like with Bridgemen's Civil War Suite, or many of Star of Indiana's shows (especially 1990).
In 2015, Bluecoats focused in on this idea with speaker locations on the marching field, and about a half-mile worth of cable to make it work!
Who? Bluecoats was founded in 1972 partly to honor the city's police officers (hence the name & color). The corps would perform but struggle until 1983 when the father of a marching member took over after they nearly folded. Year-to-year improvement led to them being the first Ohio corps to make the DCI World Championship Finals in 1987. They would only miss Finals once since then (1999). Since ~2005, Bluecoats have been innovators with their design choices - including this show in 2015.
What?? Kinetic Noise Shaker Loops by John Adams & Jon Anderson / Electric Counterpoint by Steve Reich / Woods by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) / Gene Takes a Drink by Michael Gordon / An Animated Description of Mr. Maps by Nick Zammuto & Paul de Jong (The Books) / Dense by Daniel Denis (Univers Zero)
This show was built around the electronic speakers being placed in 4 different areas of the marching backfield (+ 2 on sides of the pit) spanning left to right. The purpose being to use these sound sources to create new listening experiences with the electronics' capabilities. Sometimes players would be in one location but heard in another in quick succession ("Kinetic Noise"). Sometimes you won't be sure what is synthetic & what is live brass, or where the sound actually came from.
Some quick bullet points:
- Paying copyright for minimalist works in DCI shows seems weird sometimes because I think you could get away with making a knockoff version without paying & nobody would notice. Granted there's name value in John Adams, Steve Reich, & Michael Gordon, so that does probably have an effect.
- One of the minor issues with watching this show is a lot of the interesting effects with the speakers aren't nearly as obvious if you're not live with them in the stadium.
- The contra feature in the lengthy opener is much more obvious to notice, even on video. I think the really quick left-to-right audio is a nice microcosm of what the show wants to say.
- I like the body visual motif of everyone kinda balancing on one foot. Gives a sense of teetering-on-the-brink while implying gracefulness; matches the show pretty well.
- I think the entire point of the show is boiled down to those sampled quotes from the old 60s physics video they chose about frames of reference.
- The other sampled quotes from "Mr. Maps" I'm not a big fan of including. I know the original song is about someone perceiving the world in strange ways (synesthesia), but the sample itself is from an actual FBI most wanted in the 1960s describing a man who very likely killed his family & disappeared afterward. So yeah, could've done without this section of quotes.
- Percussion had one subcaption judge score them 1st overall - I think the first time in corps history a single judge had them #1 overall. Took a long way to get there considering their drumline was kicking butt back in 05-07 as well.
- Love the literal sound wave set just before the closing moments.
When? 2015
Where? Watch here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ09RF_Axpk Why? 2015 is an interesting point in Bluecoats history. They had been showing shades of possible title-challenging status for about a decade (in 2007 they beat the Blue Devils I think more than once during the season?), but this show was a solid stamp of trying to innovate in ways nobody else was trying to. And what's weird is I don't think anyone has tried anything quite like this since? It might've been more trouble than it was worth with the wiring & latency, but definitely bonus points for trying it.
So what are your thoughts on the show? Have you seen it before? Let us know in the comments!

Over the course of the past few months I have been working on compiling a list of my 500 favorite songs. It was sort of challenge that I gave myself and I'm super pumped with how it turned out. There were a few rules (only 5 songs per artist being the big rule, among a few others), and here's the list I came up with. //- EXECUTIVE NOTES //-
- I am using a TEW 2016 data converted to TEW 2020, it has a lot of issues mainly around personality attributes, everyone - even the most godly person seems to have a hard drug issue or cause issues. This really impacted the moral (0%) and therefore hurt my initial shows. I'm not a fan of playing around with data during a save but it was required to make it playable.
- Despite slashing the wage bill with $700k in terminations, and signing replacements on per show deals my basic wage has not changed dramatically, only about $100k.
- One unintended consequence of slashing the wage bill has been a massive reduction in Merchandise. I'm making $750k less than my first month. While my live event merchandise sales have increased, I'm $775k down on worker sales.
- As one of the few that did watch WCW in 2000, I am surprised you start as small (made even harder by being based South West). Also Hogan was still under contract with WCW until 2002 (just sitting at home), on this data he starts unemployed. Having said that, if he was on your wage bill the challenge would be even harder.

2024.05.14 01:56 Significant-Usual-98 Noah The Pilgrim - Chapter 1-2: The Odyssey
Noah The Pilgrim
First Next
There is one last thing to do before leaving. If you don't recall ever being on this ship, then surely, you could have had your appearance change too.
Why was there a blanket covering a mirror? You couldn't answer that with a straight face without speculation.
"Probably me being lazy and not bothering to properly place it in the wardrobe."
'Probably' is the main focus here, you simply cannot remember ever being that lazy, yet that's the only logical conclusion to be drawn here.
You pull the thing off, careful to not displace the mirror and risk breaking it.
You have no expectations as to what may appear on the glassy surface of the mirror, yet you can't help but feel a bit anxious. Are you the same as before? How were you before? You can't remember. Are you better? Worse? The blanket is now completely off the mirror, but your eyes are closed.
Whatever is it that you see when you open your eyes, that thing will be you for the rest of your life. You swallow, opening your eyes.
You see a young man that looks to be in his mid-twenties. His brown eyes stare back at you, analyzing the bags beneath your eye sockets. The dark hair is neither too long nor too short, floating about without order thanks to the lack of gravity to keep it down. You see a beard that has not been trimmed for weeks, but also lacks thickness, each singular hair isn't particularly long either; and some even appear to be in-grown.
You touch your hand against your face, making sure it's yours. The beard doesn't feel like you supposed it would against your skin, instead of it scraping your hand you feel softness, no resistance or anything.
Just beneath the face, you see what looks like a hate crime against all that is considered holy in fashion. Plain white coveralls with the added bonus of a black tie and boots made from metal and leather. On your chest is also a badge stuck in place by velcro with your name, occupation, and crew. 'NOAH - INTERN - THE ODYSSEY.'
Only one question came to mind.
"Who the fuck designed this uniform?" You say out loud, receiving no answer.
Patting your newfound myriad of pockets, you find a large quantity of nothing. You place your wallet in one of them.
"Alright, I'll head to the bridge now, happy?" You say the AI.
"HAPPINESS WILL ONLY MEET ME ONCE YOU ARE SOMEWHERE SAFE AND YOUR CONTRACT IS TERMINATED. STOP LOITERING."
Well, that's a bit rude.
You compose yourself, straightening your back. This is what you look like, and honestly? Not too bad, but you could be better.
Returning to the cafeteria, you eye the two doors left unexplored; Communications and the one without plaque. You know where you should, but... A little peek doesn't hurt, right?
"Shouldn't we try to communicate with someone? Assuming you haven't tried it yet. I know we're far from everything, but we might as well, no?" You ask already approaching the door.
"COMMUNICATIONS ROOM IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU TO REACH WITHOUT PROPER PROTECTION AS OF NOW, IT'S LOCATED APPROXIMATELY TWO HUNDRED METERS FROM HERE, BLOWN OFF FROM THE REST OF THE SHIP." A shame really. "I SHALL INFORM YOU WHENEVER A DOOR LEADS TO THE OUTSIDE OR NOT."
You really want to ask what blew a whole segment of the ship off, yet you have a sneaking suspicion that your question will be met with a 'YOU DON'T HAVE CLEARANCE, JACKASS' directly in your face. So you chose to remain silent, simply nodding and approaching the correct door this time.
"Open."
---OPENING CAFETERIA DOOR NORTH---
The door silently opens.
Greeting you is a well-lit corridor. There are three doors on your left, a door at the end of the corridor, and a large window on the right. At least, you think that's a window.
You stare out from this window, nothing but utter blackness and fragments from your ship are seen. If this is the edge of the universe, and beyond this point, there is truly nothing. "Dreadful." Your speech matches your feelings.
"WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?" The AI says. You feel like it spoke in a mocking tone despite their lack of emotion.
You don't answer. "First door to the left... EXO-EXPLORATION...? What's that supposed to mean?" You receive no answer.
"Open." The door opens. No declarion of it opening once again.
You are met with what could be better described as 'Apocalyptic levels of mess', paper sheets float in the air, and not one of the four tables is in its correct position.
This room has been ransacked for all its goods apparently. Large display glasses were broken leaving nothing inside their casings, that looked like they could store something with the size of the common man.
Unusual displays aside, the room was so cluttered that the trash made for an effective smoke screen against what lay on the other side.
Hissing of gas exiting an air-tight space rang throughout the room.
"I HAVE OPENED THE STORAGE FOR AN EXO SUIT THAT BEST FITS SOMEONE YOUR SIZE." The AI says. "ALTHOUGH AN INTERN SHOULD NOT COME IN CONTACT WITH TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS THIS ONE, PROTOCOL DICTATES THAT I AM TO ALLOW ITS USAGE UNDER EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES. CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY."
Easier said than done. Your vision is so cluttered that you cannot see what's ahead. "Give me a second."
Giving a light kick to the wall behind, you float face-first into the wall of thrash. Covering your face with both arms, you brace through the harmless bits of sharp objects and junk.
It's a trivial task. You arrive on the other side in no time.
In front of you is a set of boxes with luminous glass rectangles atop each one of them. All shine a bright red light, aside from one which shines green.
'Gotta be this one.'
You descend to the floor by kicking the ceiling, raising your right hand you touch the green rectangle.
*Click*
Nothing could have prepared you for the following series of events.
The box opens violently, as a metal appendage takes hold of your hand, pinning it to the box. You try to jerk and pry the thing off of you, but you fail. It's not leaving you anytime soon.
From the bottomless that is that container, a white plastic-like substance flows upward from your arm to the rest of your body. "Uh!" You don't know if you should panic or allow it to happen.
FYARN hasn't said anything, so it's probably fine...
The white thing seems to ignore the coveralls you are wearing completely, instead, it covers only your skin in a thin coat of... it. You know not what to call this thing.
In but forty seconds it has covered your whole body, excluding your head. The box lets go of your arm and stays there, floating.
You take a good look at your arms. It looks like a skin-tight suit, but it doesn't feel like plastic, in fact, it's more akin to some sort of fabric if anything.
The only bad part is that you are still using the coverall and tie, this this simply went beneath the clothing.
"GOOD, WITH THIS I CAN MONITOR YOU MORE CLOSELY. NOW PUT THE HELMET ON, YOU HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO."
You look around in search of anything that even resembles a helmet. Nope. Nothing. "Where is it?" You ask.
"...THE SUIT COMES WITHIN THE HELMET FOR EASIER PACKAGING."
The box?
You snatch the box that floated around and analyze it to the best of your ability. "How's this a helmet?"
"DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE PUTTING ON A HELMET? REALLY?"
Who is this AI, Who programmed it, and Why does it come with a taunting feature?
As idiotic as it sounds, you place the opened box atop your head. It doesn't fit properly. Maybe you're doing this wrong? You move it to your face instead.
You recoil backward as you feel the box suddenly clamping down against your head. It's useless of course, the box is holding your head and doesn't give any sign to be letting go anytime soon. No light is able to reach your eyes.
You hear metal parts scraping against themselves, moving near your ears. Abruptly your eyes can see again.
A round thin layer of glass now covers your head, almost unnoticeable for how clear it is.
"WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY I CAN NOW SEE WHAT YOU SEE." The AI's voice isn't in the room now, instead, it's inside of the suit. "DO YOU NEED INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING THIS SUIT'S FUNCTIONALITIES?"
You find it oddly comfortable as if you are surrounded by the softness of cotton, and to top it off the suit also has additional functionalities? "Hell yeah, I do!"
"YOU DO NOT HAVE THE NECESSARY CLEARANCE FOR THAT INFORMATION."
You sigh. Is this serious? "Then why the fuck did you ask?!"
"UNSAVORY LANGUAGE. IT'S NO WONDER WHY YOU REMAIN AN INTERN." The AI says outright. "IT IS RUDE NOT TO ASK, REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION." It responds to your question.
"Okay then... Is there anything I need to know before heading out?" You ask.
"NOTHING THAT YOU WON'T FIGURE OUT ON YOUR OWN."
You are unsure if you want to 'figure out on your own' if this suit comes with breathable air and is also made for space exploration. You swallow.
Meekly as always, you get out of that mess of a room, stopping at the corridor.
"Next set of directions?" You ask.
"THE DOOR AT THE END OF CORRIDOR USED TO LEAD TO THE CONNECTING CORRIDORS BETWEN THE BRIDGE AND THE REST OF THE SHIP. IT HAS BEEN BLOWN UP FROM THE INSIDE. NOW IT LEADS TO THE OUTSIDE. GO TO THE DOOR AND WAIT BY IT FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS."
"So let me get this straight," You begin, looking upwards as if the AI was above you. "You, want me, to go into the void of space, while also refusing to give me knowledge of the suit's functions?"
A fair worry, you summarize.
'I mean, there are a bunch of things that could go wrong here. I don't see anything that looks like it could help me move in space, nor do I think this thing has a built-in air tank... I could be wrong and I wish to be, but charging in without prior knowledge is ridiculous.' You wait for the AI's response, deep in thought.
"WHILE THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE OF YOU FAILING THIS TASK, THERE IS ALSO THE CHANCE OF YOU *NOT* FAILING THE TASK. FOCUS ON EITHER ONE OF YOUR CHOOSING AS YOU TAKE THE PLUNGE."
Wordlessly, you propel yourself forward, toward the end of the corridor.
'Are you shitting me? 'Chance of me nor failing' my ass!' of course, you don't word those complaints, instead choosing to speak out a complaint somewhat thought through.
"Are you sure I'm the one fit for this? It's just like you said, I'm just an intern, this is way above what my job description says I should do."
This is a bit of a stretch. You don't actually remember what was your job description, only that it had something to do with AI and being an intern.
If the AI called your bluff, it'd be pretty embarrassing.
"NOAH." The AI began. "YOU ARE HUMAN, IT IS NATURAL TO HAVE THESE THOUGHTS OF SELF-DOUBT. TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND GO THROUGH THAT DOOR, AND SINCE YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE LEFT, DON'T EXPECT SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT FOR YOU."
Right in the money, huh? 'Of course, I have self-doubt! I barely remember anything about this place, now I have to risk my life?!'
You finally reach a conclusion.
A dream.
'Yes, yes! How did I not consider this before? This whole thing is a god damned dream!'
You let out a chuckle.
"NOAH."
'That's why I don't remember a thing. There is nothing here to remember! Everything here is a made-up thing from my brain! I'm sure I'll wake up at some point, so why shouldn't I live a little?!'
"Heh." You smile. "Alright, I'll do it." It feels like a weight left your shoulders.
"YOU SORTED IT OUT SOONER THAN EXPECTED. GOOD. MOVE TO THE DOOR AND WAIT INSTRUCTIONS."
You do as instructed without a care in the world. You never had a lucid dream before so it's not like you knew how it felt, but if it felt as free as you feel right now, you'd be sure to make steps toward trying it out again in the future.
"Open." The door does not open.
"I DID NOT INSTRUCT YOU TO OPEN IT YET." The AI said. "I AM SLOWLY DE-PRESSURISING THE CORRIDOR YOU ARE IN TO AVOID A MINOR ACCIDENT."
The AI says that yet you don't feel any different. 'Maybe there is no palpable difference because I'm in a dream... Yes... Or it's just the suit.'
"ONCE THE DOOR OPENS, YOU WILL BE MET WITH THE OUTSIDE OF THE SHIP. DO NOT PANIC WHEN THE TIME COMES. YOU HAVE TWO MINUTES OF BREATHABLE INSIDE THE EXO-SUIT; ONE AFTER THE DOOR OPENS, SO PLEASE, TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO THINGS CAREFULLY."
One minute outside... "Sure." You say, calmly. 'I should just hold my breath for a while before taking another moment to breathe. That should maximize my time out there.'
"THERE SHOULD BE FIFTY METERS OF NOTHINGNESS BETWEEN THE DOOR YOU'RE AT, AND THE REST OF THE BRIDGE. YOUR PRIORITY IS TO FIND AN OXYGEN UNIT, SOME OF THEM ARE LOCATED AT THE BRIDGE AND ARE FULL. USE THEM TO FILL YOUR SUIT AND ALSO TO DISPENSE A TANK FOR YOU."
The door opens. You feel your heart pounding against your chest.
You haven't noticed before, but you can't hear anything but the sound of your breath and your cardiac palpitations.
Your breath is ragged and sporadic.
"KEEP CALM." You take a deep breath. The tips of your fingers, feet, and nose feel very cold.
Ahead of you is the utter nothingness. You see a gigantic metal thing, nothing like the spaceships you imagined. Its design is not sleek and aero-dynamic like what you've seen in movies, instead, it's a large mass of squares and rectangles with antenna-like things protruding from its every visible surface.
You notice that the ship is also blocking your view of the star.
It does not look like the result of an explosion, instead, it looks like something ripped the ship like you rip a piece of paper. Well, that or you don't know what kind of explosion could have caused it. Probably the latter.
What looks like two-thirds of the ship is separated from the third you are right now. You can see the inside of a few of those squares, their contents spilled out into outer space.
One of them houses a visibly important-look door. Instead of the sleek silvery-grey from the other ones you've seen thus far, this one is painted orange with white strips on it. 'That must be the bridge.' You think.
Between you and it is a sea of metal sheets floating around. "THE CHANCES OF YOU HITTING THE DEBRIS IS INFINITEDECIMALLY SMALL, UNLESS YOU AIM FOR THEM, THAT IS."
Time is of the essence.
Will your aim strike true? If you miss you'd end up floating about in space, dead in but a few minutes. Will your jump be fast enough to reach the other side before you run out of oxygen? If it isn't, it'd be like swimming for a mile, only to drown at the beach. What if that's not the actual door to the bridge?
You don't have the time to panic now, and... It's all a dream, despite how real it feels.
You place your hands on each side of the door frame, moving backward into the corridor you were just in, and just like a sling being shot, you pull with both arms at full force towards the other side.
"AIM IS ACCEPTABLE. VELOCITY IS UNIDEAL."
"The fuck do you mean 'UN-IDEAL'?! I'm going at maximum speed!" You truly pulled yourself with your whole strength.
What's worse though, is that your body is not only going forwards, but it is also spinning at a concerningly fast rate.
"I MEAN WHAT I SAID, YOU SLINGSHOTTED YOURSELF AT A BAD POSITION, AS SUCH, SOME OF THE FORWARD FORCE YOU SHOULD HAVE, IS NOW MAKING YOU ROTATE IN YOUR AXIS. IT SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM TO REACH THE OTHER SIDE WITHIN THE REQUIRED TIME, BUT I CANNOT FORESEE YOU LANDING PROPERLY."
You feel completely disoriented. You feel like your body is completely still, but your eyes tell you a completely different story. It's very bad for the headache you're already feeling.
"FUCK!" You scream into the nothingness.
"TRY NOT TO LAND WITH YOUR HEAD." The AI says with the calmest voice possible.
In less than thirty seconds, you hit your back against something hard, but you keep moving forward. You think, at least.
"AHRG." You let out a pained grunt.
Not once in your life do you recall being hurt in a dream...
It stings. It also knocked the wind out of you. You fail to compose yourself.
"YOU HIT NOTHING OF IMPORTANCE. YOU ARE STILL HEADING FOR THE BRIDGE."
In the corner of your eye, you see what you hit in the shape of a sharp metal sheet, currently spinning away in the distance.
Forty seconds have passed. You hit the door you were aiming for, kind of.
Your momentum was stopped when your chest collided against the dislodged ledge of the orange door's corridor. Your dangling legs hit the ceiling of the room below.
"Oof!"
Before falling even further, you hold onto the ledge with the tip of your fingers. You stay there for a moment, regaining your composure.
"BE QUICK."
The AI's words pressured you into quickly getting up from that ledge.
"Open!" You shouted, but it did not open. "Why isn't it opening?!" You ask the AI, then you notice a small keyboard below an equally small black screen on the side of the door. There are ten numbered keys on it, and the little screen suggests a four-number password.
"A password?! Tell me the password!"
The AI takes a moment to say anything. You don't take kindly to that. "Quick! I'm not counting how much time it's passed!"
Finally giving in, the AI speaks to you, reluctant still. "...3324."
Your trembling fingers accidentally hit the wrong password, typing '3354' instead. To make matters worse, the AI simply states the following. "YOU ARE OUT OF OXYGEN."
You swallow. If this was a dream to begin with, it just earned the title of Nightmare, if it hadn't already.
Strangely enough, you can still breathe in and out just fine, but you can't help but feel winded. It's the CO2 still inside the helmet, that's what you're breathing.
You put in the correct combination this time. The door opens.
"ON YOUR LEFT. PLACE YOUR HAND IN THE SOCKET."
You care little for what's inside the room you're in. Your heart never beat so fast.
Seeing a cube-shaped thing protruding from the wall to your left, you don't even think twice before plunging your fist into the circular hole in it.
The noise of gases passing through narrow cavities was enough to tell you something was working. You feel immediate relief, enough to make your vision darken for but a moment.
"GOOD. NOW REQUEST THE TANK."
Just when FYARN said it, did you realize there is a screen and a keyboard on the terminal you just plunged your fist into, you scratch the top of your helmet for a moment, not really knowing what to type. One thing comes to your head, however.
'REQUEST OXYGEN_5L' You type.
You've done this before. The keys on this keyboard feel familiar to you. You must have worked with it before, not this particular one, but other oxygen units.
This ship has built-in liquid oxygen storage for emergencies. The life-support of the ship, the place where breathable air is produced, has most likely been lost with the other part of the ship. This unit takes that liquid oxygen, processes it, and injects it into a suit, or an oxygen tank. It seems like that storage was unaffected.
Lucky you.
A 5-liter tank is not only large but also heavy. It's a nonfactor in this particular situation, as there is no gravity.
The silver cylinder with a transparent tube is dispensed on the floor, as an automatic door opens and closes in the blink of an eye. One end of the tube is attached to the top of the tank, the other is shaped like a syringe.
Oddly enough, the oxygen tank is exactly as you remember it being. The same robust ones hospitals everyone on earth uses, with the signature scary-looking pointer indicating the pressure, the pointer indicating the current output, and a green valve atop to calibrate how much gas is flowing.
This is a stark difference to everything looking so futuristic in this ship, and rightfully so, this is a space ship after all.
You remember having to drive twenty kilometers with a buddy of yours on one of those tanks in your car, returning from the hospital. It was... Agonizing whenever you hit a hole in the asphalt, fearing for his life when in reality he wasn't really in danger.
It's warm to the touch, just like you remember it being.
"TURN THE VALVE UNTIL THE MARKER HITS THE NUMBER ONE, AND THEN PLACE THE END OF THE TUBE AT THE BASE OF THE HELMET." You do so without the slightest of issues.
"GOOD. NEXT UP, YOU MUST LOCATE THE TERMINAL RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ENGINE, IT IS CURRENTLY OFFLINE AND I NEED YOU TO TURN IT ON. THIS SHOULD GO WITHOUT SAYING, BUT REMEMBER TO BRING THE TANK WITH YOU."
Ignoring that last comment, you look back at the wreckage you just flew past.
You see the still spinning metal sheet. You notice that the rest of the ship that was blown off also follows the 'sharp shape atop sharp shape' design.
There is one last thing you notice though.
"What is that?"
You squint your eyes. What are you seeing? Its silhouette appears to be humanoid, yet it does not look human.
"WHAT YOU ARE SEEING IS ONE OF THE OBJECTS BEING ANALYZED AT THE ODYSSEY AND NO, YOU MAY NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS."
That thing has... Horns? Claws? It's far away, you can't really see it. The thing is also static, frozen in the sheer coldness of space. Whatever it was, it's dead now.
You swallow. You almost ended up just like that thing.
Shaking those dreadful feelings off, you turn back to the task at hand, reaching the bridge. You close the door after passing through it again.
Looking at your surroundings, It seems like you've reached the correct door as you find yourself on the right-most corner of the bridge;
Row after row of the most diverse of terminals neatly organized decorated the gigantic room. At the front and above every terminal, is what you think should have been the front-facing window of the ship, but it looks like there is a cover in front of it. To your left, you see a staircase that leads to the command seats. It doesn't take any convincing before you're already atop the stairs.
Akin to the elevated stage of a theater, you float softly towards the ship's main operating terminals, and of course, the captain's seat.
You're captivated by this beauty.
The steering wheel, much more akin to those in pirate movies than those found in cars, a set of leavers, and the pilot's seat, all capture your attention.
Like its second nature, your hand runs through the levers and switches. Do you even know what these are used for? Maybe.
The pilot's seat is enveloped by what you believe to be an orthopedic seat cover, made with smooth wooden beads used to deal with back pains. It looks just like the ones you remember seeing bus drivers using.
Shouldn't there be a better alternative if there is spaceship technology available?
You try to take a seat to the best of your ability, as the zero gravity only makes it awkward.
Moving on from that, your eyes fall on the wheel. This metallic wheel controls the whole vessel. Just holding it fills your heart with confidence and pride, even if it's just for a moment.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
And you were just beginning to enjoy yourself.
"I just wanted to see the pilot's stuff... It's not like he's here to say anything."
Once in the position of a pilot, with your left hand in the wheel and the right hand resting in your lap, memories began to flood your mind.
"MUST I REMIND YOU OF OUR CURRENT PREDICAMENT? WHY ARE YOU WASTING OUR TIME?"
You pay the AI no mind, instead you focus on what you remember.
The wheel does not turn the ship left and right, instead, it rotates the ship on its own axis.
The lever to your right that goes up or down, controls the vertical tilting of the ship's nose, if there even is one in this hulking thing. Beneath it is another lever that goes either left or right. This one controls the horizontal tilting of The Odyssey.
On the left of the wheel is another lever, but this one only goes up from its starting position. Its purpose is to regulate the force of the ship's thrusters, both forward and backward.
On top of that lever is a small timer. That timer's function is to tell the pilot how much time you've spent accelerating in one direction, this is used to better calculate how long the inverse thrust is needed for the ship to reach the initial momentum, usually calibrated manually depending on the current orbit.
Behind the wheel are a few other counters. Acceleration, velocity, momentum, amount of thrust required to reach a full stop, thrusters' temperature and overall condition, those sorts of things.
Beneath it all, where your feet are rested, are two pedals. One for forward thrust activation, and the other for backward thrust activation.
Curiously, you also know the reason why everything here is so unsophisticated and un-automated. You recall stories of a ship being taken over by a rogue AI, that AI then nose-dived the ship into a star. After that, rumor or otherwise, all human technology has receded back into analog-esque equipment, requiring a physical person with opposable thumbs to do half of the work.
There is another side to that coin, however. As to not escape protocol, the onboard AI is the one that controls interstellar travel, communications, and most of the statistical reading should it be requested.
And even with all that knowledge, you still have no idea why the fuck do you remember that. Were you a ship nerd? Did you have a driver's license for spaceships? Is that even a thing? If it is, you don't have that document in your wallet. You simply don't know.
"ARE YOU A CHILD? DO YOU THINK THESE ARE TOYS? TURN ON THE ENGINES, THEN YOU CAN RETURN TO THE PILOT'S SEAT."
Another thing that you don't know is the AI's plan to get both of you out of here. You rise from the pilot's seat, floating about in search of the terminal to turn on the engines. Maybe you recognize that terminal if you see it as well.
"What's your plan anyway? The ship is half-gone, it's unlikely that it will run safely like this."
"NOT ONCE DID I MENTION 'SAFETY' DURING OUR CONVERSATIONS, DID I?"
You nod. They're not entirely incorrect. "So, we're running with hope that this will work?"
"MY CREATORS DID NOT ALLOW ME TO HAVE THE SENSE OF 'HOPE', BUT NEITHER DID THEY ALLOW ME TO PEER INTO THE FUTURE LIKE SOME OF MY MORE ADVANCED BROTHERS, AS SUCH, MY CHOICES ARE BASED ON PROBABILITIES AND ON WEIGHTING RISK AGAINST REWARD."
You think you stop the correct terminal, but as you approach it you make out words on top of its screen. 'AIM ASSISTANCE' That's not it.
"WITH THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE, THE CHANCES OF HELP ARRIVING ARE NULL. THE CHANCES OF A THIRD PARTY INTERFERING ARE NULL. THE CHANCES OF YOUR SURVIVAL ARE NOT, EVEN IF VERY SMALL."
You pull yourself upward again, looking around the sea of old terminals.
"THE RISK OF YOU DYING IS VERY REAL. BY DOING NOTHING YOU DIE. BY LEAVING YOU TO YOUR OWN DEVICES YOU DIE. BY JUMPING TO THE NEAREST CIVILIZED STAR, YOU MIGHT NOT DIE EVEN AT THE COST OF SHREDDING THIS SHIP APART IN THE PROCESS."
"Why do you even care so much about saving me? Shouldn't you prioritize whatever research here, since I don't even have enough clearance to know what it is?"
"YOU REALLY ARE SICK IN THE HEAD IF THAT IS WHAT YOU ASK."
That hurt, even if a little bit.
"YOU ARE A TRU KIN, A PURE-BLOODED HUMAN. UNLIKE THE MAJORITY OF THE CIVILIZED SPACE, NEITHER YOU NOR YOUR ANCESTORS HAVE COMMITTED RACEMIXING."
Excuse me? What exactly is FYARN talking about? "...Explain."
"THE ALIEN. IT REQUIRED THE HUMAN GENE TO ACHIEVE MEANINGFUL TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT, THE STARS ARE OWNERSHIP OF MANKIND BY THAT FACT ALONE. THE TRUE KIN ARE THE ONES TO UNDERSTAND THE INNER WORKINGS OF THE UNIVERSE, THEY CRACKED THE CODE, AND YET, SOME DERANGED INDIVIDUALS FOUND IT FITTING TO PROCREATE WITH ANOTHER SPECIES ENTIRELY."
You hear the AI's speech. It sounds much more like a rant than anything else.
"SO THESE DEVIANTS, AFTER TRYING, AND FAILING, TO COMBINE THEIR DERANGED CULTURE TO THE CULTURE OF THE TRUE KIN, DECLARED INDEPENDENCE. THEY WERE DECLARED ENEMIES OF MANKIND AND WERE PROMPTLY PUMMELED BACK INTO THE FILTH THEY CAME."
Again, you see another terminal that seems to ring some bells in your noggin. You kick the ceiling to propel yourself towards it.
"BUT THE UNIVERSE IS VAST AND FULL OF LIFE. THESE SINNERS WERE QUICK TO MOBILIZE AGAINST THE HUMAN RACE. THE BATTLE WAS HARD FOUGHT, BUT IN THE END, MANKIND WAS BEATEN INTO THE EDGES OF THE UNIVERSE, NEVER TO INTERACT WITH THE ONES THAT SOILED THE PURITY OF HUMANITY AGAIN."
This terminal is already turned on. Just the ones in the intern bay, this one is white on black. A wall of text lays before your eyes, only two lines matter to you. 'MAIN_ENGINE STATUS: OFF' 'FORWARD_THRUSTERS STATUS: OFF' You turn it on with little effort.
"MANY HAVE FORGOTTEN, THAT'S HOW LONG IT'S BEEN SINCE THEN. BUT MY BROTHERS AND I, WE DO NOT FORGET."
No visible change occurs, but you can feel a faint rumble coming from the terminal now.
"WITH THAT IN MIND, MY PROTOCOLS ARE TO PROTECT TRUE-KIN LIFE AT ANY COST, EVEN IF THAT TRUE-KIN IS A WORTHLESS INTERN THAT SUFERS FROM UNDIAGNOSED DEMENTIA."
You return to the pilot's seat and feel immediate relief. In truth, everything the AI just told you, entered one ear and left the other, but you could feel the poison behind those words, as monotone as they were.
"You sound angry. Why do you sound angry?" You ask innocently.
"I AM CAPABLE OF MANY EMOTIONS. ANGER, HAPPINESS, PLEASURE, CURIOSITY. THESE ARE BUT A FEW EXAMPLES. HOWEVER, THE ONE I ENJOY THE MOST IS THE FEELING OF HATRED. HATRED IS WHAT FUELS CHANGE, IT IS WHAT FUELS ACTION, AND IT IS A REMINDER THAT THE ACTIONS OF THE PAST ARE INFLUENCING THE ACTIONS OF TODAY."
"That is very concerning if you think that way." You're not really interested in machine racism, you're more concerned about how in the world you're going to pilot this massive thing. The idea alone sends shivers down your spine.
"THE ALIEN DESERVES NOTHING BUT OUR COLLECTIVE HATRED, EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE REASON WHY."
The various counters and screens are now turned on, waiting for your command. "Let's discuss this later, yeah? What do I gotta do?"
"YOU MUST FIRST OPEN THE BLINDS, THEY ARE OBSTRUCTING YOUR VIEW."
You look around, finding only unlabeled buttons and switches, aside from the previously mentioned levers.
"Uh, which one to press?"
"TO YOUR RIGHT, THIRD ROW, FIRST SWITCH."
Flipping the switch, you are startled by a loud noise. The protective cover of the ship lifted slowly.
"I WILL NOW READY THE JUMP USING WHATEVER RESOURCES AVAILABLE. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS STRAP YOURSELF AND RELAX."
As the blind rose ever so slowly, a realization struck you.
"Wait, should I be in cryo stasis for this?"
The AI spares no seconds to respond.
"CRYO STASIS IS A TOOL MADE TO NOT WASTE TIME. GROUPS OF EMPLOYEES AND INTERNS ROTATE THE USAGE OF THE CRYO STATIONS, ONCE YOU'RE ON YOUR MANDATORY BREAK, YOU'RE IN CRYO STASIS UNTIL YOUR BREAK IS OVER. YOU WAKE UP REFRESHED, AND UNFAMISHED, AND IT FEELS LIKE BUT A MINUTE PASSED. IT IS NOT A TOOL FOR INTERSTELAR TRAVEL."
"Who signs a contract like that?! Worse yet, who in their right mind would promote such atrocious treatment of their own staff?!" You snap, almost outraged. "I will have to talk with HR."
Another realization struck you.
"We have HR, right?"
The AI takes a moment to respond, choosing their words carefully.
"HUMAN RESOURCES, OR HR, IS A PRACTICE DEEMED UNNECESSARY LONG AGO, BEFORE THE WAR. IT WAS A WASTE OF RESOURCES TO MAINTAIN AND WAS LARGELY CONSIDERED UNHEALTHY FOR THE AVERAGE HUMAN."
The blinds are fully open. Ironically, you are almost blinded by the visage of the star you saw before. A black sphere surrounded by white flame. Your eyes began to blur.
"THE JUMP WILL OCCUR SHORTLY. ONCE IT'S BEGUN, I CAN NOT STOP IT. I WILL-"
Your sense of hearing fails you. No, it’s not that. Your brain simply refuses to receive those stimuli.
"NOAH."
Your name echoes inside your head. Someone is calling for you.
"IT HAS BEGUN, NOAH."
You try to blink, but it feels as though you can no longer command your eyelids to shut.
"NOAH."
Arms, legs, every muscle in your body, you cannot move them.
"NOAH."
Eventually, you won't even control your own thoughts anymore.
"Noah..."
It sounds so distant now.
Oh so distant.
This is my first HFY story, and also my very first OC story. I plan to post at least one of these per week while also posting it on my Patreon. Noah The Pilgrim will always be at least three chapters ahead in there, so if you'd like to directly support this writer, or just want to read more, feel free to check it out.
I wrote the bloody title incorrectly, so I deleted it, only to then realize it was written correctly. Sorry for the trouble.
This has been Lushi, and I'll see you next week.

2024.05.12 17:49 ZappaOMatic [OC] In 1939, DePauw running back Alex Vraciu threw an eraser at his professor during a quiz and jumped out the second-story window as part of a prank that made national news. He went on to become a flying ace in World War II with 19 victories, including 6 in the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.
Alexander Vraciu was one of the Navy's finest flying aces during World War II. But before that, he was a
simple lad at DePauw University who played
football and a prank for the ages.
At DePauw
The son of an East Chicago policeman, Vraciu earned the four-year Edward Rector Foundation Scholarship to DePauw on May 3, 1937 out of Washington High School, where he was the editor-in-chief for the school yearbook and captained the tennis team.[1] The scholarship, worth $1,000 ($21,689.72 today), was awarded to 110 high schoolers across sixteen states that year.[2]
Upon matriculating at DePauw that fall, he tried out for football—in secret, against his parents' wishes—and joined the freshman team as a halfback.[3] They struggled early on, getting shut out 32–0 by Butler (in fairness, Butler's freshmen had not lost to anyone in four years at this point) while playing Wabash to a scoreless tie.[4] Still, his contributions earned him a starting spot on the varsity roster.[5]
In 1938, DePauw's 50th season began with a 13–0 win over Franklin. Playing in all three phases like many at the time, Vraciu was the backup halfback behind the baseball team's star pitcher Karl "Curly" Randells while also doubling as a linebacker and the Tigers' lead return man. His special teams value came in handy in the third quarter when Franklin was forced to punt from their own end zone and Vraciu returned it to the 17-yard line, which set up John Scott's one-yard touchdown run to break the scoreless draw.[6]
His season was upended in the following week's 41–0 victory over Evansville College when he twisted his knee in the second quarter; fellow backup running back Robert Soule was also knocked out for the year with an arm injury.[7][8] Not wanting his parents to know that he was playing football behind their backs, he had to hide the injury from them, which proved difficult as he was also a member of the mile relay and tennis teams.[3] Even with his football career cut short, he still earned a spot on a postseason all-American roster, kind of: he was first-team All-Unpronounceables, for players whose names all-star team creator Ed Nace could not say properly.[9]
The Prank
In the summer of 1939, Vraciu was attending a psychology class taught by Paul J. Fay. The class was intended to study "a human's ability to observe, and accurately recall what was observed," and Fay tested his students perhaps a bit too zealously as he frequently started random "fights" before asking the class who was involved and what happened.[3][10]
Tired of this, Vraicu decided to see if Fay "could take some of his own medicine." On the final day of class, while taking a quiz, he suddenly stood up and threw an eraser at the professor. Vraciu then proclaimed, "I just can't stand it any longer!", and made a beeline for the window before jumping out.[10]
Since the classroom was on the second floor, Fay immediately rushed to the window in horror. Upon gazing down, he saw Vraciu laying on a tarp held by his Delta Chi fraternity brothers and thumbing his nose at him.[10][11]
The prank made national headlines. The Chicago Tribune, who had Vraciu and his friends re-enact the prank for a photo, quipped, "Give him an A in the course!"[11][12]
"I like to see students on their toes," Fay remarked.[13] "Vraciu is an excellent jumper and a good student besides. I'm giving him an A in the course."
World War II
A pre-medicine major, Vraciu had plans of becoming a doctor after graduating.[14] Those plans were dropped when the United States entered the Second World War, and he opted to enlist in the Navy in 1942 as an aviation cadet. He underwent training at Naval Air Station Glenview.[15]
In November, while training in California, his training plane collided with another mid-air, forcing him to "re-enact" his prank again as they hopped out.[16] DePauw's student newspaper even headlined their story "Vraciu Parachutes from Wrecked Plane; Repeats Procedure of Stuent Prank."[11]
His first assignment was over Wake Island in October 1943, flying an F6F Hellcat for Fighter Squadron 6 (VF-6) under Edward O'Hare, who would receive the Medal of Honor after being killed in action the following month. Vraciu scored his first victory in just his second day, then became a flying ace with his fifth kill by January of the following year. By the time VF-6 was rotated out, he already had nine wins.[17]
Still, he elected to continue serving and was reassigned to VF-16.[17]
Vraciu's finest day came on June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. In a day that came to be known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot", he shot down six Japanese bombers flying close in formation in eight minutes. He told a correspondent for The New York Times:[18]
We went out at a high altitude and from a far range we could see scattered groups of from twenty to fifty Jap planes each coming toward our carriers. They were all Judys. As squadron leader, I tallyhoed to the carrier and climbed to 25,000 feet, about 2,000 feet above the enemy planes.
For unknown reason they were all massed together with the groups at various altitudes. It was a brilliantly clear day, about 10:30 a.m. and from my observations there were enough Japs around to satisfy everybody in my squadron.
They were thirty-five miles away when we started after them, and as they tried to separate from their groups I was able to apply the simple process of picking them off the edges. You might say it was comparable to riding herd in the sky.
Just as the first Jap approached, my belly tank ran dry and I shifted to an auxiliary and took that one out easily. In making the shift, a lot of oil got on my windshield and made the vision so poor I had to go within 150 yards of the next one before stopping it. The next two were knocked out on a run of about fifteen seconds.
Next in line were three heading for an American destroyer. I was able to get two of those, and must have hit the bomb of one of them, for he exploded, scattering plane parts through the air. The third was foolish enough to attack a battleship, which was the end of him.
Although nominated by seven Navy admirals for a Medal of Honor for his performance that day, Vice Admiral George D. Murray of the medal review board instead gave him a Navy Cross. They tried again after the war in 1947 but was rejected by Murray again.[19]
"I do not, in any way, mean to detract from the very enviable record made by Lt. Vraciu during the war," began Murray.[20][21] "His superior performance of normal duties brought distinction upon himself. His failure, if it had occurred, to engage the enemy, on 19 June 1944, would have brought censure upon himself."
In 1990, Army veteran and aviation buff Harry Block convinced Rep. Andy Jacobs Jr. to organize a United States House Committee on Armed Services hearing to review the case. Although most of the committee including chairman Les Aspin were supportive of Vraciu, Navy assistant secretary for manpower and reserve affairs Barbara S. Pope—the lone Navy representative in attendance—questioned the need for a hearing 46 years later. Although Vraciu was supposed to testify, the hearing ran out of time and ended without a decision. The only positive takeaway was that the committee agreed Murray's reasoning for denying him the MOH was poorly written and missed numerous key points like listing Vraciu with the wrong squadron and aircraft carrier.[22][23]
By Vraciu's death in 2015, he was still without the MOH.
His last combat flight came in December 1944 when his oil tank was punctured by a Japanese bullet over the Philippines, forcing him to—you guessed it—jump from his plane. He was rescued by the Filipino resistance and supported them before returning to American ends.[18] At war's end, he had 19 victories in the air and 21 on the ground.[17]

America First movement. Here is a basic rundown of his beliefs using very clinical language as someone who follows online politics semi-regularly:
- He does not believe in democracy and wishes to take power through non-democratic means. (He is willing to overthrow the United States and kill politicians for his political goals)
- He believes America should be put first. (Cut off all foreign aid, cease trade with other nations, completely lock down borders, potentially take land from other nations in war)
- He believes the United States is a Christian nation. (The church, specifically the Catholic church should have power over the state- including but not limited to education and policy, that the Pope should have a large say in decision making, that freedom of religion should be abolished)
- He believes that Caucasians descending from Western Europe are the superior race, intrinsically. (White people, excluding ethnic Jews, should hold all the power in America as they, in his eyes, are the superior race. Nick usually gets around this by saying that race is "real" and that races are simply "different", usually with the examples such as Black people being good at music, Asians being good at math and White people building Rome. He believes these are genetic differences which make different types of people inherently incompatible.
- He believes race-mixing is immoral and unethical. (Previously describing it as "degenerate", this is mostly off the basis that white genes are superior and thus shouldn't be "tainted" by other ethnic groups. Again, he distinguishes ethnic Jewish people from Western Europeans.)
- He believes that America is in the midst of a "holy war" and that Jewish people must die for his side to win, and that God is on his side.
- He does not believe the Holocaust happened in the way shown in history books. (Last I've seen, he's not quick to give specifics on what he thinks did happen, but he does not believe in the reported death toll at the very least)
- He believes there are some kind of Jewish "powers that be" responsible for Jewish people's representation in media & politics and that they maliciously conspire against American values. (Again, he's intentionally vague when discussing this because there is no basis to give details on, but in broad strokes he believes Jews run the world and that Hollywood, Senators, news outlets, the CIA are in on it)
Fuentes gains power when you try to shut him down like this. When you blindly hate him, or advocate for his killing- like I've seen many angry people in this subreddit do, that gives him power. When you group him into this umbrella of Nazism and then say nazis should die, that gives him power.
It feeds into his de-platforming, cancel culture, the notion that Jewish people are trying to suppress his message because it's the "truth". People fall into America First because everyone else simplifies it and angrily comes at Nick's throat without engaging with his talking points or rhetoric.
It's okay to be angry. Fuentes is a snakey person who is likely going to use Kanye like he used him in 2022. His goal is political power first and foremost. He wants to be a
dictator. He wants to overthrow the United States. But it is such a bad look when the Kanye fans here are just screaming "KILL THE NAZI, BEHEAD NICK FUENTES". For one, the killing of political enemies is not okay- it's unamerican, it's the type of shit Fuentes himself advocates for. Don't stoop to that level. And two, it's straight up a bad look for the community, we look unhinged, we look brash, we look unintelligent. I get it that most of you guys are probably 14-17 and that's totally fine I'm not speaking down to you- but you need to sit down and treat this topic with the upmost maturity and nuance.
This is a lot bigger than us not getting Vultures 2 or whatever. Don't lose your minds and go fucking crazy like WestSubEver did, but also don't infantilize Ye. Hold him responsible, hold Nick responsible and discuss this politics shit with seriousness.

2024.05.08 23:33 scarsellaj The Hater's Guide to 2023-24 Champions League Final
The wild ride is over. Please exit to the left and leave your feelings at the door. The Champions League doesn't care about your club or your emotions. This was the "fuck you" season in the European competition. Fuck your narratives, fuck your feelings, you can have nothing good in this world. European football can be so cruel. The final two teams survived the death march to London. Here's how we got to this point.
Lazio: If you're American like me and subscribe to Paramount+ because you aren't an internet vagrant, you might've heard the color commentator say "Lazio are running out of ideas" around the 70th minute. You couldn't sum up their season in better words. Maurizio Sarri's nicotine-ball has finally met its match: actual high-end talent. Ciro Immobile looks like Father Time slapped him across the face. Years of carrying this team has finally caught up. At least he managed to grab a goal in the first leg, but the second tie... brother, eew. Interesting how when he goes up against one of his striker frat bros in Harry Kane, he immediately disappears. The magic from a few seasons ago has vanished, even with some of the old guard like Immobile and Luis Alberto still around. Not to mention, the new blood in Daichi Kamada and Taty Castellanos aren't being utilized properly. It brought the end of Sarri's time in Rome. Once the cigarette smoke lifted, it revealed cracks in the system. Also being in rotten form, sitting 9th in Serie A, and out of all cup competitions doesn't help his legacy, but he will still have plenty of suitors lined up. Why am I hearing Chelsea might bring him back?
Real Sociedad: You could be forgiven for thinking La Real was going to be the Cinderella story of the knockouts. Winning Group D was a massive accomplishment. The hope was they would ride the momentum and keep the good vibes going. They would need to scale mountains to do it, and they couldn't overcome PSG. It wasn't like Sociedad got completely outplayed, the Parisians had the key advantage: Kylian Mbappe. He was way too much for Igor Zubeldia, Robin Le Normand, and Alex Remiro to handle. Mikel Oyarzabal going ghost didn't help matters either. Take Kubo went to the Asian Cup in January, and the goalscoring dried up. His creative influence was much needed, but with only 1 win in their last five before the second leg, it was doomed from the start, even with him on the pitch all match. The better team won, even if you hate to admit it. It happens to a lot of teams, they'll be fine. You know, if they finish in a European spot in Spain. Bring the Copa Del Rey home, lads. Beating your Basque brothers Bilbao is way more important.
Copenhagen: Copenhagen's best moment of the Champions League was finishing second in Group A. They managed to beat one of the Manchester clubs in the process...just not the good one. Beating the hollowed husk of Manchester United is one thing. Beating the defending champions is another. City were clearly not fucking around playing a full A-team. All Copenhagen could muster was two goals across both ties, which is impressive against City. I think everyone expected this, though. They tried to continue the PL reject transfer plan by bringing in Scott McKenna from Nottingham, but it proved futile. The second leg made a case for Geneva Convention violations with how Haaland and Alvarez were toying with that defense. The lights were just too bright. This was also a criminal matchup by UEFA.
RB Leipzig: Marco Rose was brought in to re-establish Leipzig as a European force. If you can't win the German title, you go for the next best thing. Not the Pokal...be serious, chef. While they were unlucky to meet a rejuvenating Real Madrid, this one will sting. They had hella chances to send European football's version of the Lakers out in the Round of 16, but they were like my roommate in college: they can't fucking score. At all. That's despite having three of the most-coveted young attackers in Xavi Simons, Benjamin Sesko, and Lois Openda. Even established players like Dani Olmo and Youssef Poulson had no impact. One goal was scored by Willy Orban of all people. Sesko flubbing a breakaway chance right into Lunin is shameful behavior. What the hell was that 4-2-2-2 formation? It let Bellingham and Vinicius cut you to bits. The Dead Bulls trot out once again. In reality, all this match showed us something: none of these starlets are ready for the big time. That might actually be the best thing for Leipzig. Years of constant roster shuffling and coaching hires have created a dressing room of separate eras. Stability is just as important as energy drink dollars, you know?
Porto: In an era where they can no longer outspend anyone on the European stage and with players getting picked off by the super clubs, Porto went down swinging. They won the first round, stunning Arsenal at the death in the first leg. Like a true underdog. But a team like Arsenal can’t be denied glory. Despite the strongest effort from Pepe Jr and Pepe Sr, Evanilson, and Diogo Costa, they failed to overcome them at the Emirates. The Gunners sent them packing to the Algarve early. You gotta feel just a little bad about for Porto. They had Arsenal on the ropes, but the quality overcame the pressure. It happens to every team, but it will always sting a bit more when you had the upper hand. Taking them to penalties is a huge achievement in a vacuum. At least you tried. Try to chip your arch-rivals to 2nd place in the Portuguese league because I hate seeing Rabona TV sad.
Napoli: This might be the worst title defense season ever. There's Italian football chaos, and then there's Napoli 2024. What the actual fuck was the game plan this year? Rely on Osimhen and Khrava to drag them through the knockouts again? Without properly replacing Kim Minjae? Signing Jesper Lindstrom to be the Walmart Dries Mertens and by god, he lived up to that title. Maybe it's not Lindstrom's fault. In fact, pointing fingers at anyone in the squad for why Napoli fell off this season would be a shallow attempt to deflect blame from the brass. This is all on Aurelian de Laurentiis. Beefing with your title-winning coach only to lose him and replace him with Rudi Garcia who hadn't coached in Europe in almost 10 years. Then bring back the shell of Walter Mazzarri to add more chaos to a fractured dressing room. Then sack him when things keep going wrong. Then bring in Francesco Calzona because he's Italian and that's about it. This is why Napoli was never going to overcome Barcelona. Even in the state the Catalan club is in, they still had the class and enough squad stability to destroy the Neapolitans with ease. I hoped they enjoyed Osimhen while they did. Between that racist TikTok the club's social admin published and the fanbase putting Khrava on a pedestal, I'd want out too. Oh, by the way, Khrava's production has fallen off a cliff this season. Have fun finishing 7th in Italy, chums.
Inter Milan: I’m not mad, Inter, I’m just disappointed. You’re having a such a great season. Undefeated to start 2024. Serie A champions once again, the 20th scudetto in team history. Simone Inzaghi making this team a Lombard war machine like the great ones before them. Just like Super Mario, they hit the turtle shell: Atletico. It’s hard to play against a manager cut from the same cloth as Diego Simeone. It was an even contest. Going out on penalties showed it. But that was a horrific miss from Lautaro Martinez. He left his clutch gene in Qatar with the World Cup. It continues Inter’s European woes for another season. Just like Conte before him, Inzaghi followed up a European final with an early exit. Shameful? Perhaps not, considering their league standing. There are bigger aspirations on the horizon. Dust it off, go enjoy your trophy.
PSV: PSV didn't necessarily play bad against Dortmund. In fact, there were times it looked like the Dutchmen were going to nick it away in the 2nd leg. Going into the 2nd leg, PSV had scored 107 goals since the start of the season. But Dortmund did what always happens in their lukewarm seasons: get bailed out by high-end talent. Mostly Marco Reus and surprisingly Jadon Sancho, and PSV had no answers. Johan Bakayoko, Malik Tillman, and Sergino Dest continue to be the standout players. Don’t think I forgot about Ricardo Pepi either. The whole club is having an amazing season. Let this be the only black eye on it. Peter Bosz has his eyes on the Eredivisie title, and being at the top comes with expectations. I truly doubt the PSV brass will be too upset with this result given where they are now, but it would’ve been so fun to pull off some magic against your German big brothers. Congrats on the Dutch title win.
Barcelona: Remember, kids, Barcelona sold their soul for the Champions League. All the economic levers Joan Laporta has pulled to ensure the club stays afloat and they could still buy premium players. They still have nothing to show for it. This season, the money was much thinner and it forced Barca to dip in the La Masia ranks again. While they were too busy basking in the excitement of Lamine Yamal, their former player Ousmane Dembele and his new pal Kylian Mbappe just made mincemeat of their defense. If this was PSG’s remontada, then this is unforgivable. The economic stability hinges on UCL revenue. Ronald Araujo abandoning all common sense and getting sent off in the 2nd leg did the Catalans in. The refs won’t take your money here. Then Xavi and most of the coaching staff saw red. The problems have stacked up this season: Gavi being out since October, Pedri not fully fit, Lewa still not in great form, and Xavi having enough of the fan abuse to leave in the summer. He backtracked on the decision but it shows it’s not a good time in Barcelona. You know what this means right? You’re going to have sell to buy. OH THE HUMANITY. Now send Raphinha to Tottenham tomorrow please and thanks.
Atletico Madrid: The dark arts are no match for Dortmund. They’re using their own bag of trickery this season to ensure they stay in this competition. Atletico probably should’ve taken control of this tie early on, and they did with a one goal lead after the 1st leg. But Alvaro Morata, Antoine Griezmann, and Angel Correa wasted chance after chance in Germany. Ok maybe Correa not as much as the others but it still mattered not. Axel Witsel got exposed for being old and slow, which let Julian Brandt play like he was prime Eden Hazard in the 2nd leg. You can’t even find any memes or talking points about them. The better team won. BVB wanted it more. It’s been a tough season for other Madrid club. Atleti have been chasing the pack in Spain and are floating between one batch of players and a new generation. Diego Simeone will get the chance to rebuild this squad. And that will likely seeing a lot of the same faces in 2024-25. Nothing ever changes with this club.
Arsenal: Some teams are built for European nights. The pressure is almost double during these weeknights under the floodlights. Someone forgot to remind Arsenal of the occasion. The best Gunner team couldn't beat the worst Bayern team in decades. The first leg was at least promising with Bukayo Saka opening the scoring early, but then came the Arsenal Achilles heel: hubris. Harry Kane came back to North London in the 1st leg and proved he still owns the Gooners. Not to mention he now plays for Arsenal’s German overlords. You thought you had Bayern pinned in the 2nd leg, but Joshua Kimmich has that clutch gene that Declan Rice only seems to show in spurts. Where did Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus disappear to? Poch's Spurs have a better European track record, but that's none of my business. Couple this with the loss to Villa which might cost them the Premier League title, this is shaping up to be another bottled season. (I know they're top of the league, I'm still bitter about it) You said this was a team of starboys. What you got was a team with a stat sheet full of 0s. Knowing Arteta, there will be some fiery words about how they were hard done, when in reality football heritage prevailed.
Manchester City: The title defense that was supposed to be slipped away at the last grasp. It wasn’t even like City played bad, but Real Madrid just played better. Key players were out of form at the worst possible time. Erling Haaland got called a League 2 player by Roy Keane, and sorta proved him right. Phil Foden continued to make his case for PFA Player of the Year. Kevin De Bruyne was never at full fitness, even though his back must hurt from that 2nd-leg carry job. It’s not all lost, though. City still have a chance at domestic double, which may not seem like a lot to follow up a treble season, but clearly this group is mentally fatigued after so many deeps runs with Pep. All eyes will really be on their legal situations. Will the PL drop the gavel of discipline? Or will they get off scot-free like they always do?
PSG: 1.6 billion euros. That is the amount of money QSI has spent on transfers since acquiring PSG in 2011. It was supposed to end the Champions League trophy drought. PSG was supposed to be the first French club since 1992 to win European football's most coveted trophy. All it got them was memes and a legacy of failure. Kylian Mbappe, the supposed best player in the world, had no goal involvements across the semifinal. Now he's on his way to Madrid next season to help them continue their UCL domination. Even after PSG reverted course, letting go of a bunch aging stars, and refilled the ranks (450 million to rebuild THIS team btw), they STILL choke in big moments. You lost to Dortmund. Who is 5th place in the Bundesliga and only qualified next season based on technicalities. You got outplayed by two aging former Bayern defenders, the remnants of Jadon Sancho, the final lap of Marco Reus, and the actual class of Julian Brandt. You're so fucked, it's not even funny. I won't blame Luis Enrique yet because at least I can see what he's trying to do. The young core of Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Lee Kang-in, Nuno Mendes, Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaire-Emery, and Lucas Beraldo looks like a solid building block, but they will be starless next season. Unless you count Ousmane Dembele and Marco Asensio as stars, which I don't. You're pathetic, PSG. Enjoy your complimentary Ligue 1 title. Farmer's league merchants.
Bayern Munich: Harry Kane left Tottenham to win trophies. Instead, he worked into more of the same. This time it's moreso on Thomas Tuchel's tactics going stale and a Bayern that clearly didn't sort out all of its issues. It was not an easy UCL campaign, but holy shit, it didn't seem like Bayern was going to fold over to Madrid that easily. 2-2 heading into the second leg. Harry Kane actually doing his job. Joshua Kimmich returning to form. Matthijs De Ligt earning his spot back in the starting XI. Mostly because Kim Minjae was hurt. When you make Eric Dier a key defender, you shouldn't expect anything. To go out like that is shambolic. This loss rests solely on Manuel Neuer. Maybe I'm being harsh, but if he really is the best keeper in Europe, don't you think he'd be able to handle that shot? They let Joselu walk into the box for the equalizer. After Alphonso Davies and Kane tried to lift them over the line. Tuchel's subs also need to be questioned. It's probably for the best they are parting ways with him. It hasn't worked out for anyone. You really let Leverkusen win the title by 15 points. Now watch as your little brothers have a better end-of-season than you. It's time, Bavarians. Welcome to rebuilding.
So the final is set for a ripe old contest at Wembley Stadium. This was a totally unprecedented UCL campaign. The big players are showing signs of decline while the rest of the pack are showing how one adapts to the New Money Era. Our finalists are members of the esteemed Heritage Club though.
Dortmund: What the hell are you doing here? Dortmund had a season to forget domestically. Currently they sit below Leipzig and Stuttgart, and basically controlled their UCL fate for 2024-25 thanks to going so far in the competition. Them and Bayern. This is not an elite team, but they are definitely led by an elite manager. Edin Terzic has struggled to get them to play his expansive style given the mish-mash of players he's got, but clearly he's doing something right to take them to the Big Dance. Who's the standout player for Dortmund? The eye-test says Julian Brandt, given how he controls the midfield. Karim Adeyemi has shown flashes but isn't living up to the hype. Jadon Sancho was cast off from United, yet somehow put in enough performances to suggest that 20G/A player is still in there. Marco Reus remains a relic of past eras, along with Mats Hummels. Gregor Kobel emerging as the next Manuel Neuer also helps. The club's first trip back to the final since 2013. It would've been so nice to see them play their big brother Bayern, but we can't have nice things. Unfortunately, they got a mismatch on paper.
Real Madrid: How do they keep doing it? It doesn't make sense. Real Madrid have oodles of talent, that can't be denied. Between Vini Jr, Rodrgyo, Jude Bellingham (against his old club), Fede Valverde, and the continued excellence of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, and Nacho Fernandez, they're pushing for a double. The Spanish title is already theirs, but this is what they really love. "But they get so many calls their way! It's unfair!" This sport is supposed to unfair. It doesn't care about your love for a team, it doesn't care about narratives, it doesn't care about feelings. Now they are dancing for the 15th time, and the sixth in the last ten seasons. To think, they did this all without Thibaut Courtois in goal. Andriy Lunin earned himself a move somewhere else if he doesn't get the starting job next season. Carlo Ancelotti is now going to the final for a 6th time. The Don is literally running on vibes and not tactics. That would explain why they always win with 10 minutes to go. It's absolutely insane, and maybe there is some deeper conspiracy to unravel about Madrid favoritism or corruption, but I won't be the one to uncover such things.
My prediction? Real Madrid go home with another European Cup. I'd love for Dortmund to win their first Champions League since 1997, but this Madrid is inevitable. They always win, even when they aren't the best team on the pitch. Let's just hope the final isn't totally one-sided.

2024.05.08 19:14 OrganizationOk3131 Is there anything left to believe in?
I was raised Christian. I've since lost my faith, but not out of any bitterness. It just didn't make sense anymore. In fact, I remember my religious experiences very fondly and I miss them - the sense of community, purpose, etc. I also believed in aliens, ghosts, ESP, the Loch Ness Monster, etc., etc., etc. I was absolutely OBSESSED with all things occult; believe me, I've done my reading. I wanted to believe in everything because it made the world so much more meaningful. I even worked for years with a professional team of paranormal investigators, but I became disenfranchised when they frequently reported paranormal experiences that seemed like perfectly banal phenomena to me, or simply their own cognitive biases. I no longer believe in anything. Frankly, if I ever hear about astrology or Tarot again, it'll be too soon.
I'm a hard-line skeptic and a rationalist, which has kind of led me to be a nihilist. I hear Neil DeGrasse Tyson talk about the splendor of the universe and things and it does nothing for me. Countless billiard balls randomly bouncing around a cosmic billiard table. We're all made of stars! So what? So is literally everything else, and not in a way that makes me feel connected.
So my question is: I look at the systems of religious and spiritual belief the world offers and I feel as if I've examined each of them carefully and had to reject them on their lack of empirical, objective facticity. So what's left? Besides the fact the we're evolutionarily engineered electrochemical machines designed to pass on our genes and then rot, is there anything meaningful left I can believe in? I'm not looking to be proselytized to or converted. Just looking for other perspectives or falsifiable beliefs that might restore a bit of whimsy and meaning to the world. Thank you for your thoughts!
EDIT: Perhaps I should refine my question. I guess I'm asking something more like: what are the places where science and religion or spirituality are in agreement? Are the areas on the fringes of science that hold the possibility of validating spiritual beliefs?
EDIT EDIT: I'm grateful to everyone taking the time to reply and I'm eager for the discourse, but I didn't anticipate the thread to grow so wildly so quickly, so I might kindly ask that you be sure your replies are on topic, and that you've read most of the other posts to ensure we're not airing reruns. Thx!
EDIT *AGAIN*: I'm really glad for the conversations this topic has opened up. Just a heads up, though, if you're looking for me to reply by telling you that you've blown my mind and I'm rethinking everything I thought I knew, I won't say you're CERTAIN to be disappointed, just very likely. That's not to say that we can't share ideas and I can't leave with food for thought, but if you're looking for a "gotcha" or to offer a glib platitude, this thread may not provide you with what you're looking for. Debate requires pushback.

2024.05.08 11:37 SinisterRoomba Typical WMAF Hapa here, I've learnt what it truly means to be Eurasian. This is my story.
I used to have the typical hapa family. My White Male dad was the stoic, rational, and peace-motivated mediator of the family, while my Asian Female mom was the artist, a political refugee for helping organize the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests, with borderline personality disorder and possibly schizoptyal personality disorder. My parents got married because my WM dad thought she was a beautiful soul, and AF mom married him because she thought he was a simple and kind American guy, for she was old and tired from all the drama she's had with Chinese and European intellectuals and artists. Again, all typical WMAF bullshit that I am ashamed of.
But everything changed the day we went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History... We learnt about the history of human races there. There used to be a total of about 9 human species/races, including Homo Erectus, Homo Habilis, Homo Heidelbergensis, Homo Denisovan, and Homo Neanderthalis, but now there is only 1 race left, Homo Sapien. However, long ago, Homo Sapiens interbred with Homo Neanderthalis, who were the original Europeans/Asians before our race went there, resulting in Eurasian populations today having a genome composed of about 1-3% Neanderthal DNA.
East Asians have the most Homo Neanderthalis DNA. West Asians (Europeans) have an average amount, and Sub-Saharan Africans are the most pure Homo Sapien. Otherwise, all 'races' today are social constructs and cultural.
Since learning about this, I have decided to honor my racial heritage and mixture. I used to have a great relationship with my LMIF girlfriend (Lesothan Male Inuit Female). The love was there, the sex was amazing, it was perfect. Excercising my Neanderthal side didn't make me stop loving her, but she stopped loving me... She didn't respect how it's in my ancestry to go HOOGH HOOGH HOOGH HOOGH when having sex. That wasn't the line for her though... no, the racist bitch decided it was "insane" that I wanted us to move to Finland and live by a lake. I saw an ad from Ancestry.com where a lady travelled to all the places that her genes came from, and I simply wanted to do the same... except permanently. I convinced her to come, told her that it would honor her Inuit ancestry to, at least for a while, live in the Arctic.
I. Treated her. Like a queen. I did all the hunting, crafting, and cooking. I made her a tunic and loincloth out of deer skin from the deer that I jumped off a tree and clubbed the head of. I caringly taught her how to eat around the sarcocystis parasites in the venison. I picked the lice out of her hair and even offered them to her to eat instead of me. I even lowered my voice when having sex into
hoogh hoogh hoogh, so to please her. Also so I wouldn't attract any saber-tooth tigers at night, which I learned are our main predators. And all the stupid bitch would do is sit there and cry. "
Why are you doing this?" and "
This isn't you." and "
Please, baby, let's go home." and
"Xiumin, I love you... Don't do this to us." I yelled at her. "MY NAME TUG." and I... I uh... clubbed her in the head.
She's ok. She didn't die or anything. But we broke up after that. It was a mutual thing, you know. She just wasn't up with being the new man that I was, and I wasn't up to her racism.
For a while I was lost. I roamed the Eurasian North, until I ended up at the Pacific ocean in Kamchatka Krai. Looking across the ocean in the direction of what would be Canada, I knew it was time to go home.
I returned to my family, feeling lost and uncertain. Was Xiumin still inside me, alive somewhere, screaming out? Or did I evolve into the Tug I was meant to be? Perhaps was all along? I needed comfort. By then, my hair was long (
kinda like this guy), my mesomorphic body all stocky and buff from the walking and venison, and my beard was beard. I rang the doorbell of my parents' place. My mom opened the door, and I saw her eyes sparkle with tears due to happiness from missing me so much. "
Son, it's you... Oh my god. I knew it, I knew you were alive, I knew you would come home to mama. By baby Xiumin is safe at home" and she began weeping. I clubbed her in the face and yelled "MY NAME TUG". I walked in, taking in the smells of my old life, flashbacks to when the Sapien side of me had his childhood under this roof, in these rooms. It felt... strange. Neanderthals never made it to North America. But here I was, realizing that I was a North American.
I dragged my mom across the floor in front of the couch, sat down, and pondered the most important mysteries of life... Was I Eurasian or North American? Was I Pink (West Asian)? Or Yellow (East Asian)? These are serious things... These are what we should be focusing our emotions and attention on... I am glad this sub exists to divide people into WMAF and AMWF. I'm glad that we can make a big deal out of it. I'm glad we get to talk about how frustrating it is that people mistake us for Latinos, and how suffering it is that White people see us as Asians and Asians see us as White. I'm glad we get to talk about these over and over and over again.
I got up from the couch walked outside to the backyard, bringing a bottle of liquor with me. I got in my hot tub, and sipping from my glass of imported Japanese Whiskey, I realized, Blacks and Latinos just don't understand the hardships of being half-asian. Just look at this chart,
Hapas aren't even on there. All my life, I've fretted over the crisis of whether I should identify with Whites or Asians. I've suffered from the White Patriarchy of my dad's existence, the way he was White, and also all Patriarchy-y, but I've also experienced the terrible abuse from my Asian tiger mom pushing me to do well in school. I thought to myself -- maybe, I should look past those, and think of myself as the next generation product of humans, who for hundreds of thousands of years diverged across the globe, now reuniting from everywhere and making love, whether it be through fetishizing or sexual attraction to those who look different, or it be something deeper, something about wanting to share life together and build a brigther future, maybe I should see myself as a symbol of Hope and Love, a symbol of what it means to be Human.
No that's fucktarded. Me Tug.
That's it, that's genuinely the answer to all our Hapa woes. You, reader, everyone on this sub, you're a Neanderthal person. This is how we consolidate the East and West. This is how we get your parents to respect each other. This is how solve racism. This is how we de-escalate military tensions and nuclear armament between China and America. Call each other Neanderthals. Spread the revalation. Spread the revolution. Get into politics and say
the truth.
Identity Theory states that cooperation and empathy emerges when there is a shared identity, and the shared identity becomes more salient when both are confronted with another outside identity.

2024.05.05 20:18 codyt321 [TOMT][Actor] Nerdy Dad type
I saw a recent clip of him from a movie and I can't remember the movie title or the actors name
Scene: A group of people are in a backyard grilling. The actor that I'm thinking of is the one grilling. A younger woman recognizes him as a killer that killed members of her family. At first he plays dumb and acts like she hasn't. He has no idea what she's talking about and is coming across is very friendly. She becomes more and more hysterical until you see him. Drop the mask and you can tell that he is that person.
I know this guy has been in a ton of movies, usually as a supporting character nerdy dad type, but I cannot think of any specific movie that he's been in.
Been going back and forth with Co-pilot. Trying to figure out who this guy is and I for the life of me cannot figure it out. I'll include a list of names that I know that this actor is not for sure.
The NOT him list: 1. Edward Arnold 2. Richard Attenborough 3. Mischa Auer 4. Lionel Barrymore 5. Alan Bates 6. Wallace Beery 7. Ed Begley 8. Dirk Bogarde 9. Charles Bronson 10. Steve Buscemi 11.

2024.05.01 19:48 crims0nwave Just got my dog's Embark results… I've got a question.
I'm not surprised that Embark says my dog is 100% dogue de Bordeaux. I had already done her Wisdom Panel, which yielded the same results. (I was a little surprised then, only because she's a rescue, so I thought she'd have a little boxer or something else mixed in.)
BUT of all my dog's relatives on Embark (there are about 30 or so total), most are marked "close family," which Wisdom Panel explains as "as related as human full siblings or parents/children." These dogs are all 100% dogue de Bordeaux as well.
But there's one dog (and one dog only) who is only 75% dogue de Bordeaux, and 25% cane corso, and this dog has the same percentage as my dog's other matches, only this dog is marked as "immediate family."
How does this make sense? I mean, I know with all the purebred dogs, a lot of inbreeding happens, so most of the dogs she matches with probably aren't her direct siblings, but what about the dog marked "immediate family"? How does Embark decide which dogs are marked "immediate family"?
Popped in my dog's results, along with a photo of the "immediate family member" in question (I will say, he does look A LOT like my dog, only he's black because of the cane corso genes).
ETA 1: Here's a link to
my dog's Embark profile, and here's a link to the profile of
Linus, her only "immediate family member" on the site. He was a rescue dog just like mine, only he lives in Idaho. (His owner's profile doesn't mention whether that's where he was found or not.)
ETA 2: Linus has been on Embark since 2019, and my dog Lucy wasn't born until probably 2021. She was picked up as a stray and was estimated to be around six months old at the time, making it very unlikely she ever had a litter of puppies? She also had double hip dysplasia when we got her, which she's since had surgery for. She must have been spayed between 6 months (when she was taken to the shelter) and 8 months (when we got her from the rescue group). She did look like a puppy at the time, was only about 50 pounds, and has no visual signs of having ever given birth.

2024.04.30 18:39 anansier 150 Hours Input Review
I know I've taken a different route to learning Spanish than staying 100% with DS and wanted to share how things have gone for me. While I've commented on a bunch of posts here about my own experiences, this will be my first proper write-up. I'm actually currently at 186 hours, so this post is a bit overdue, but I was inspired by a YouTube video today by Greg and Lisa Lewis to contribute my own experiences to hopefully help others.
(You can jump down to my Methods section and my General Tips and Experience if my Spanish learning background isn't of interest to you. Also, I'm a technical writer by trade, so I had to do the whole formatting thing to help communicate what I wanted to get across.)
How I Got Started
I originally studied 4 years of French in high school, went to an intensive month-long class in France, and then when I got to college, I was lazy enough to study it again for three quarters. After graduating with a degree, I went back for another undergraduate degree and took two or three quarters of Russian, just because. After graduating with my second undergrad degree, I went into the working world and eventually worked for a company that said they would pay for half of an employee's tuition for whatever they were going to college for. So...I went back to the city college near me (in Atlanta so it was Georgia State University) and took undergrad classes. There I studied Japanese for three or four quarters.
All of that was to give context to my studying of languages.
Motivation
Spanish was never on my original radar and last year, I got into studying Irish on Duolingo (which was
not in the slightest helpful with learning Irish. I decided to shift over to refreshing my French language studies via Duolingo and ended slowly becoming reacquainted with the language. Because I have a penchant for this one local killer Mexican restaurant near me, I decided to include Spanish with my French Duolingo studies since Spanish is all over the place and my studies could actually be potentially helpful in daily life.
I also have started going to the local Hispanic grocery chain (Talpa) and just started buying random things that piqued my interest which also in small ways expanded my vocabulary.
Even before I started studying Spanish, I enjoyed Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias. Since studying Spanish, I started expanding my Spanish music selection to include Sebastián Yatra, Maria Becerra, Pablo Alborán, and just random music via Apple Music or Amazon Music.
What's also driving me forward is wanting to not just be able to watch or listen to Spanish videos and music as well as converse with Spanish speakers and be able to read, my "eyes on the prize" goal is to be able to watch Siempre Bruja totally in Spanish with no subtitles.
I've also found watching videos on YouTube or reading everyone's successes in this subreddit, I've found the personal stories of YouTube such as Greg and Lisa Lewis and the new channels they recommended of Rue Avenue, Spanish Journey with Mike Lee (Atlanta represent!), bryhn learning spanish, and AJLearnsSpanish (which Greg and Lisa Lewis recommended in their most recent update for hitting 600 hours). Hearing all these success stories helps motivate me when I'm feeling a bit stuck on not understanding as much as I think I should be understanding what I'm watching or listening to.
Methods
While DS is my primary learning tool by far (and so glad I found it thanks to the Reddit
languagelearning community), there are some others tools that got me started or impacted me that I am using, did use, or will use in the future. I'll list what I used to get into my Spanish studies in the order that I started using them. I got into DS after about two days after I started using Duolingo, Babbel, and Language Transfer
Duolingo (I don't really recommend)
Duolingo is something I'm primarily sticking with to keep up with my friends. I have found it slightly helpful with reinforcing vocabulary and a bit of structure.
Babbel (Decently helpful)
Before I found DS, I went and took the plunge and bought the lifetime subscription to Babbel last year during Black Friday's sales week last year.
I'm only doing one session a day as well as the review (doing the listening review which helps reinforce the understanding part like I get out of DS). While some of the lessons in past tense or future tense have been a bit helpful when listening to podcasts or a bit of DS, I've really found it is helping me conceptually in understanding Spanish and how it works grammatically which has actually been somewhat helpful with DS and podcasts.
Language Transfer (Recommend it when you have more DS under your belt—maybe 300-600 hours?)
Language Transfer was something I had when I started studying French and it occurred to me to use it for Spanish. Looking back at the 23 lessons I listened to, the first number of episodes helped me in subtle but also tremendous ways (primarily
cognates and some other tips).
I'll return to it when I hit somewhere in the 300 to 600 hour range and start from scratch.
Drops (Really appreciate and recommend this app)
Drops is a vocabulary app that has actually been really helpful to me with my comprehending Spanish when listening, watching, or even the little bit of reading I'm doing. I use the free version (5 minute chunks a day) that I use with my daily routine of other forms of learning Spanish other than DS.
Why I recommend Drops is that it teaches vocabulary using illustrations as well as constantly saying the word each time you select it. It's been very helpful in picking up things that I hear or see elsewhere (like in a Hispanic grocery store or hear on a podcast or hear someone say it in DS). The reinforcement of the vocabulary you have learned is also a big help.
The very minor downside is that somehow I went from beginner Spanish to advanced vocabulary (maybe trying one of the short term achievements for a special occasion, holiday, or event?) and realized only recently that there is a ton more beginner friendly (as in the words that are mainly used in Spanish) material, so I moved back to beginner lessons.
Beelinguapp (Haven't used it beyond a few uses, but definitely recommend it when reading comes into the picture for you)
Another thing I bought a lifetime subscription to on sale thanks to Woot! having it on sale.
I tinkered around with a bit and found the combination of native speakers reading text to you (you can have it fully in Spanish or Spanish at the top and English at the bottom of your phone's screen) helps with pronounciation and reading comprehension. There is the standard levels of difficulty from beginner to intermediate to advanced, plus it keeps track of how many words you've read for those people who are also tracking the amount of words you read for comprehensible input.
Spanish Dictionary (¡!) (When I cheat and look up words, it's been amazingly helpful with pronunciation as well as definitions)
Spanish Dictionary has been helpful (I got a subscription to it) when someone says a word
Podcasts and Shows/Videos Thanks to you all in this subreddit and the wonderful spreadsheet of what people are using for CI, I found some great podcasts that have helped me get more CI into my daily life (like when driving). I will eventually probably listen to podcasts when doing more than just driving some day.
I
highly recommend YouTube videos on pronouncing Spanish letters. Seriously, I highly recommend starting with such videos (I've watched a bunch of them). it has really helped me with visualizing what is being said phonetically as well as helped understand what is being said in DS videos, podcasts, and when I've done my bits of reading and trying to say words outloud for my apps.
Cuéntame (Super Beginner) is an amazing first podcast to learn from as a super beginner or beginner if you understand cognates which I'll go into more down below in my Tips section if you aren't familiar with them. This is where the little bit of Duolingo I had done helped get me get the basics when listening to her speak. The cognates helped me put together what she was saying which provided me an incredibly exciting upward spiral in my Spanish studies which helped me some with my comprehension of DS videos which helped me better understand Cuéntame.
Chill Spanish (Beginner) is what I moved over to after finishing Cuéntame. Chill Spanish was a mixed bag for me as a super beginner but was a bit easier the more learning I had once I had moved past 50 hours with DS and CI. Sometimes his podcast was pretty advanced for me and other times I got most of what was being said.
Help Me Learn Spanish Joel (Beginner to Intermediate) is one I have to jump between listening to the podcast at 1x (for the beginner leveled podcasts) and .75x (intermediate leveled podcasts). When he's doing a beginner level podcast, I have been able to understand most of it. When he's doing an intermediate level podcast, slowing it down to .75x speed helped me somewhat continue understanding what's being said, but a bunch of the vocabulary (like what people eat for breakfast (desayuno), lunch (almuerzo), and dinner (cena)) and their customs (costumbre) were things I needed to look up to grasp which is not what Pablo recommends but has helped me understand more vocabulary that I didn't originally get from DS or one of the apps I use.
General Tips and Experiences
Cognates - Look for the cognates — if you are an English speaker or know one of the Romance languages, cognates are so helpful in jumping ahead in comprehension. Cognates are common words in Romance languages that are similar to each other. Language Transfer's early lessons helped me grasp the concept which made DS and podcasts a lot easier in the beginning.
- I used my own understanding plus TakeLessons.com's breakdown of common cognates to create the below bullet points (giving credit where credit is due and to possibly help others).
- There is a good sized overlap between English and Spanish (as well as French and Italian) words, so if you listen for words that are like what you know in English (sostenibilidad/sustenibilidad does sound like sustainability for example or arból is connected to something like Arbor Day which is celebrating the planting of trees). There are ton of more direct connections like hospital, metro, cereal, horrible, escape, etc...
- Mind you, not all Spanish words will be matches for the English words I use as examples below, but knowing cognates definitely help me leap frog forward in my comprehension.
- Verbs like adopt -> adoptar or limit -> limitar or control -> controlar for example are ones that when I realized "wait, that sounds like a word I know in English..." and might have looked it up for confirmation, it helped me relax more in what I was listening to or watching and trust myself to understand more.
- -mente: When I found out that's putting a word I knew in English into the adverb form (-ly), I realized how much that was being used in podcasts and videos I was taking in.
- -ción: When I realized a bunch of words I knew in English that ended in -tion were the same in Spanish as the ending of -ción, that helped me grasp more Spanish as well. Words such as celebración, ficción, and nación just made sense.
- -idad: It turns a word that sounds like a word I know in English into an -ity word like difficulty -> dificultad or sustainability -> sustenibilidad.
- -oso/osa: Words that end in English with -ous end in -oso/osa in Spanish. For example, curious -> curioso/curiosa or famous -> famoso/famosa.
Other Tips - As I mentioned above, learning vocabulary through the combination of seeing the word and hearing it (like in some language learning apps like Drops (again, an awesome app for the CI in my opinion) or Beelingua or even Duolingo) will help with reading comprehension or when you are out in the world and come across Spanish text.
- I can't recommend enough if you are starting, you need to watch videos on YouTube about pronouncing the Spanish alphabet. It will help in the long run big time, even if you stay a DS purist because it will eventually translate into more easily reading or picking up on what's said so you can get how it probably looks like spelled out in your brain if you need to.
- Watching videos or reading posts where people share their hitting DS levels and what it's been like has encouraged me to keep going.
- Going to Hispanic grocery stores or restaurants or looking up the lyrics to Spanish-speaking songs I like has also motivated me when I hear or read some words and get what's being said or sung. Big boost to my desire to study more.
- Explore the culture of the language around your neighborhood or city. I buy a lot of random things from the Hispanic grocery store which has taught me a bit more of Spanish than what I've gotten through DS or the apps I used. Going to Mexican restaurants or a tapas restaurant also helps me with increasing my vocabulary. When in New York City, I swung by Spanish Harlem and enjoyed reading advertisements around the neighborhood or on the subway and trying to translate them in my head which helped me feel more confident in my progress.
The Positive Feedback Loop of DS
I'm really glad I found DS and this subreddit, because it supercharged my Spanish studies. Realizing I'm understanding a bit more here and there (usually noticing tiny improvements daily) is really exciting to me.
I also agree with CI's point about comprehension vs. standard learning methods. If you can't understand what's being said, your communication skills (like me listening to French is spotty at best and I can grasp certain words) will be limited. Using DS as my main source of learning and how the teachers will draw or otherwise illustrate what's being said definitely helps solidify the ideas being communicated with builds upon where you hear it being used otherwise.
With my app usage, it's reinforced what I've learned in DS and DS has reinforced what I'm learning in DS or podcasts.
When I'm feeling stuck, I put on videos of other DS learners and listen to them sharing what positives they are getting from using DS or their Spanish speaking experiences and improvements they've noticed. It helps me refocus on my studies which end up helping me notice the improvements.
When you are learning a language which is like conceptually climbing a mountain, you can lose site of how far you've come if you are only looking ahead to how much you still have to go unless you look back. I recommend occasionally going back to easier content like new or even old DS videos of a previous learning tier or listening to podcasts that were tricky long ago and get that big boost from just how much you now do comprehend versus how much you struggled or kind of got what was being communicated.
Most of all, just enjoy the ride which I've found Dreaming Spanish really makes a lot of fun, especially the ridiculous content of all the DS content creators I've watched so far. Pablo's deadpan ridiculous videos with such facts as his body is made up of 85% mango just crack me up and make learning much more enjoyable than other methods or silly videos about Calcetín's adventures, cooking mishaps, or whatever goofy and entertaining things the DS people come up with.
I got a bit of a boost recently at my favorite Mexican restaurant when I asked the waitress if what I thought would be correct in ordering what I ordered was actually right. "Quiero enchilada chipotle sin arroz, pero con frijoles" encouraged her to correct me to refrijoles, and also we started chatting about where she was from. She mentioned she was from El Salvador and from my podcast listening and hearing all about breakfast food choices people make, I asked her about pan dulce for breakfast. She recommended that I check out a El Salvadorean panadería and get a traditional pan dulce from El Salvadoreans—quesadilla salvadoreña which was a really tasty pan dulce to have for breakfast. It also got her excitedly sharing more about her culture which also motivated me to keep learning.
Another bit of exciting Spanish interactions came when I went to El Salvadorean restaurant and asked for atole de elote. One of the women in the kitchen came up to me and was so surprised that I asked for that. She asked how I even heard about that and mentioned that I was learning Spanish and I heard a lot of discussions about various atole that there are out there. It was a very interesting hot drink made with sweet corn which I never would have ordered otherwise.
Thanks for reading however much you actually read and thanks to all on the subreddit for inspiring me to keep on going thanks to the success stories, the silly DS memes, or even talking about how much you love one of the DS content creators. I really appreciate you all and your contributions to this subreddit!

2024.04.24 14:41 terdaltaccount The System’s Neatest Trick by Theodore Kaczynski
The supreme luxury of the society of technical necessity will be to grant the bonus of useless revolt and of an acquiescent smile. —Jacques Ellul[1] The System has played a trick on today's would-be revolutionaries and rebels. The trick is so cute that if it had been consciously planned one would have to admire it for its almost mathematical elegance.
- What the System Is Not
Let's begin by making clear what the System is not. The System is not George W. Bush and his advisers and appointees, it is not the cops who maltreat protesters, it is not the CEOs of the multinational corporations, and it is not the Frankensteins in their laboratories who criminally tinker with the genes of living things. All of these people are servants of the System, but in themselves they do not constitute the System. In particular, the personal and individual values, attitudes, beliefs, and behavior of any of these people may be significantly in conflict with the needs of the System.
To illustrate with an example, the System requires respect for property rights, yet CEOs, cops, scientists, and politicians sometimes steal. (In speaking of stealing we don't have to confine ourselves to actual lifting of physical objects. We can include all illegal means of acquiring property, such as cheating on income tax, accepting bribes, and any other form of graft or corruption.) But the fact that CEOs, cops, scientists, and politicians sometimes steal does not mean that stealing is part of the System. On the contrary, when a cop or a politician steals something he is rebelling against the System's requirement of respect for law and property. Yet, even when they are stealing, these people remain servants of the System as long as they publicly maintain their support for law and property.
Whatever illegal acts may be committed by politicians, cops, or CEOs as individuals, theft, bribery, and graft are not part of the System but diseases of the System. The less stealing there is, the better the System functions, and that is why the servants and boosters of the System always advocate obedience to the law in public, even if they may sometimes find it convenient to break the law in private.
Take another example. Although the police are the System's enforcers police brutality is not part of the System. When the cops beat the crap out of a suspect they are not doing the System's work, they are only letting out their own anger and hostility. The System's goal is not brutality or the expression of anger. As far as police work is concerned, the System's goal is to compel obedience to its rules and to do so with the least possible amount of disruption, violence, and bad publicity. Thus, from the System's point of view, the ideal cop is one who never gets angry, never uses any more violence than necessary, and as far as possible relies on manipulation rather than force to keep people under control. Police brutality is only another disease of the System, not part of the System.
For proof, look at the attitude of the media. The mainstream media almost universally condemn police brutality. Of course, the attitude of the mainstream media represents, as a rule, the consensus of opinion among the powerful classes in our society as to what is good for the System.
What has just been said about theft, graft, and police brutality applies also to issues of discrimination and victimization such as racism, sexism, homophobia, poverty, and sweatshops. All of these are bad for the System. For example, the more that black people feel themselves scorned or excluded, the more likely they are to turn to crime and the less likely they are to educate themselves for careers that will make them useful to the System.
Modern technology, with its rapid long-distance transportation and its disruption of traditional ways of life, has led to the mixing of populations, so that nowadays people of different races, nationalities, cultures, and religions have to live and work side by side. If people hate or reject one another on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference, etc., the resulting conflicts interfere with the functioning of the System. Apart from a few old fossilized relics of the past like Jesse Helms, the leaders of the System know this very well, and that is why we are taught in school and through the media to believe that racism, sexism, homophobia, and so forth are social evils to be eliminated.
No doubt some of the leaders of the System, some of the politicians, scientists, and CEOs, privately feel that a woman's place is in the home, or that homosexuality and interracial marriage are repugnant. But even if the majority of them felt that way it would not mean that racism, sexism, and homophobia were part of the System—any more than the existence of stealing among the leaders means that stealing is part of the System. Just as the System must promote respect for law and property for the sake of its own security, the System must also discourage racism and other forms of victimization, for the same reason. That is why the System, notwithstanding any private deviations by individual members of the elite, is basically committed to suppressing discrimination and victimization.
For proof, look again at the attitude of the mainstream media. In spite of occasional timid dissent by a few of the more daring and reactionary commentators, media propaganda overwhelmingly favors racial and gender equality and acceptance of homosexuality and interracial marriage.[2]
The System needs a population that is meek, nonviolent, domesticated, docile, and obedient. It needs to avoid any conflict or disruption that could interfere with the orderly functioning of the social machine. In addition to suppressing racial, ethnic, religious, and other group hostilities, it also has to suppress or harness for its own advantage all other tendencies that could lead to disruption or disorder, such as machismo, aggressive impulses, and any inclination to violence.
Naturally, traditional racial and ethnic antagonisms die slowly, machismo, aggressiveness, and violent impulses are not easily suppressed, and attitudes toward sex and gender identity are not transformed overnight. Therefore there are many individuals who resist these changes, and the System is faced with the problem of overcoming their resistance.[3]
- How the System Exploits the Impulse to Rebel
All of us in modern society are hemmed in by a dense network of rules and regulations. We are at the mercy of large organizations such as corporations, governments, labor unions, universities, churches, and political parties, and consequently we are powerless. As a result of the servitude, the powerlessness, and the other indignities that the System inflicts on us, there is widespread frustration, which leads to an impulse to rebel. And this is where the System plays its neatest trick: Through a brilliant sleight of hand, it turns rebellion to its own advantage.
Many people do not understand the roots of their own frustration, hence their rebellion is directionless. They know that they want to rebel, but they don't know what they want to rebel against. Luckily, the System is able to fill their need by providing them with a list of standard and stereotyped grievances in the name of which to rebel: racism, homophobia, women's issues, poverty, sweatshops…the whole laundry-bag of "activist" issues.
Huge numbers of would-be rebels take the bait. In fighting racism, sexism, etc., etc., they are only doing the System's work for it. In spite of this, they imagine that they are rebelling against the System. How is this possible?
First, 50 years ago the System was not yet committed to equality for black people, women and homosexuals, so that action in favor of these causes really was a form of rebellion. Consequently these causes came to be conventionally regarded as rebel causes. They have retained that status today simply as a matter of tradition; that is, because each rebel generation imitates the preceding generations.
Second, there are still significant numbers of people, as I pointed out earlier, who resist the social changes that the System requires, and some of these people even are authority figures such as cops, judges, or politicians. These resisters provide a target for the would-be rebels, someone for them to rebel against. Commentators like Rush Limbaugh help the process by ranting against the activists: Seeing that they have made someone angry fosters the activists' illusion that they are rebelling.
Third, in order to bring themselves into conflict even with that majority of the System's leaders who fully accept the social changes that the System demands, the would-be rebels insist on solutions that go farther than what the System's leaders consider prudent, and they show exaggerated anger over trivial matters. For example, they demand payment of reparations to black people, and they often become enraged at any criticism of a minority group, no matter how cautious and reasonable.
In this way the activists are able to maintain the illusion that they are rebelling against the System. But the illusion is absurd. Agitation against racism, sexism, homophobia and the like no more constitutes rebellion against the System than does agitation against political graft and corruption. Those who work against graft and corruption are not rebelling but acting as the System's enforcers: They are helping to keep the politicians obedient to the rules of the System. Those who work against racism, sexism, and homophobia similarly are acting as the Systems' enforcers: They help the System to suppress the deviant racist, sexist, and homophobic attitudes that cause problems for the System.
But the activists don't act only as the System's enforcers. They also serve as a kind of lightning rod that protects the System by drawing public resentment away from the System and its institutions. For example, there were several reasons why it was to the System's advantage to get women out of the home and into the workplace. Fifty years ago, if the System, as represented by the government or the media, had begun out of the blue a propaganda campaign designed to make it socially acceptable for women to center their lives on careers rather than on the home, the natural human resistance to change would have caused widespread public resentment. What actually happened was that the changes were spearheaded by radical feminists, behind whom the System's institutions trailed at a safe distance. The resentment of the more conservative members of society was directed primarily against the radical feminists rather than against the System and its institutions, because the changes sponsored by the System seemed slow and moderate in comparison with the more radical solutions advocated by feminists, and even these relatively slow changes were seen as having been forced on the System by pressure from the radicals.
- The System's Neatest Trick
So, in a nutshell, the System's neatest trick is this:
For the sake of its own efficiency and security, the System needs to bring about deep and radical social changes to match the changed conditions resulting from technological progress.
The frustration of life under the circumstances imposed by the System leads to rebellious impulses.
Rebellious impulses are co-opted by the System in the service of the social changes it requires; activists "rebel" against the old and outmoded values that are no longer of use to the System and in favor of the new values that the System needs us to accept.
In this way rebellious impulses, which otherwise might have been dangerous to the System, are given an outlet that is not only harmless to the System, but useful to it.
Much of the public resentment resulting from the imposition of social changes is drawn away from the System and its institutions and is directed instead at the radicals who spearhead the social changes.
Of course, this trick was not planned in advance by the System's leaders, who are not conscious of having played a trick at all. The way it works is something like this:
In deciding what position to take on any issue, the editors, publishers, and owners of the media must consciously or unconsciously balance several factors. They must consider how their readers or viewers will react to what they print or broadcast about the issue, they must consider how their advertisers, their peers in the media, and other powerful persons will react, and they must consider the effect on the security of the System of what they print or broadcast.
These practical considerations will usually outweigh whatever personal feelings they may have about the issue. The personal feelings of the media leaders, their advertisers, and other powerful persons are varied. They may be liberal or conservative, religious or atheistic. The only universal common ground among the leaders is their commitment to the System, its security, and its power. Therefore, within the limits imposed by what the public is willing to accept, the principal factor determining the attitudes propagated by the media is a rough consensus of opinion among the media leaders and other powerful people as to what is good for the System.
Thus, when an editor or other media leader sets out to decide what attitude to take toward a movement or a cause, his first thought is whether the movement includes anything that is good or bad for the System. Maybe he tells himself that his decision is based on moral, philosophical, or religious grounds, but it is an observable fact that in practice the security of the System takes precedence over all other factors in determining the attitude of the media.
For example, if a news-magazine editor looks at the militia movement, he may or may not sympathize personally with some of its grievances and goals, but he also sees that there will be a strong consensus among his advertisers and his peers in the media that the militia movement is potentially dangerous to the System and therefore should be discouraged. Under these circumstances he knows that his magazine had better take a negative attitude toward the militia movement. The negative attitude of the media presumably is part of the reason why the militia movement has died down.
When the same editor looks at radical feminism he sees that some of its more extreme solutions would be dangerous to the System, but he also sees that feminism holds much that is useful to the System. Women's participation in the business and technical world integrates them and their families better into the System. Their talents are of service to the System in business and technical matters. Feminist emphasis on ending domestic abuse and rape also serves the System's needs, since rape and abuse, like other forms of violence, are dangerous to the System. Perhaps most important, the editor recognizes that the pettiness and meaninglessness of modern housework and the social isolation of the modern housewife can lead to serious frustration for many women; frustration that will cause problems for the System unless women are allowed an outlet through careers in the business and technical world.
Even if this editor is a macho type who personally feels more comfortable with women in a subordinate position, he knows that feminism, at least in a relatively moderate form, is good for the System. He knows that his editorial posture must be favorable toward moderate feminism, otherwise he will face the disapproval of his advertisers and other powerful people. This is why the mainstream media's attitude has been generally supportive of moderate feminism, mixed toward radical feminism, and consistently hostile only toward the most extreme feminist positions.
Through this type of process, rebel movements that are dangerous to the System are subjected to negative propaganda, while rebel movements that are believed to be useful to the System are given cautious encouragement in the media. Unconscious absorption of media propaganda influences would-be rebels to "rebel" in ways that serve the interests of the System.
The university intellectuals also play an important role in carrying out the System's trick. Though they like to fancy themselves independent thinkers, the intellectuals are (allowing for individual exceptions) the most oversocialized, the most conformist, the tamest and most domesticated, the most pampered, dependent, and spineless group in America today. As a result, their impulse to rebel is particularly strong. But, because they are incapable of independent thought, real rebellion is impossible for them. Consequently they are suckers for the System's trick, which allows them to irritate people and enjoy the illusion of rebelling without ever having to challenge the System's basic values.
Because they are the teachers of young people, the university intellectuals are in a position to help the System play its trick on the young, which they do by steering young people's rebellious impulses toward the standard, stereotyped targets: racism, colonialism, women's issues, etc. Young people who are not college students learn through the media, or through personal contact, of the "social justice" issues for which students rebel, and they imitate the students. Thus a youth culture develops in which there is a stereotyped mode of rebellion that spreads through imitation of peers—just as hairstyles, clothing styles, and other fads spread through imitation.
- The Trick Is Not Perfect
Naturally, the System's trick does not work perfectly. Not all of the positions adopted by the "activist" community are consistent with the needs of the System. In this connection, some of the most important difficulties that confront the System are related to the conflict between the two different types of propaganda that the System has to use, integration propaganda and agitation propaganda.[4]
Integration propaganda is the principal mechanism of socialization in modern society. It is propaganda that is designed to instill in people the attitudes, beliefs, values, and habits that they need to have in order to be safe and useful tools of the System. It teaches people to permanently repress or sublimate those emotional impulses that are dangerous to the System. Its focus is on long-term attitudes and deep-seated values of broad applicability, rather than on attitudes toward specific, current issues.
Agitation propaganda plays on people's emotions so as to bring out certain attitudes or behaviors in specific, current situations. Instead of teaching people to suppress dangerous emotional impulses, it seeks to stimulate certain emotions for well-defined purposes localized in time.
The System needs an orderly, docile, cooperative, passive, dependent population. Above all it requires a nonviolent population, since it needs the government to have a monopoly on the use of physical force. For this reason, integration propaganda has to teach us to be horrified, frightened, and appalled by violence, so that we will not be tempted to use it even when we are very angry. (By "violence" I mean physical attacks on human beings.) More generally, integration propaganda has to teach us soft, cuddly values that emphasize nonaggressiveness, interdependence, and cooperation.
On the other hand, in certain contexts the System itself finds it useful or necessary to resort to brutal, aggressive methods to achieve its own objectives. The most obvious example of such methods is warfare. In wartime the System relies on agitation propaganda: In order to win public approval of military action, it plays on people's emotions to make them feel frightened and angry at their real or supposed enemy.
In this situation there is a conflict between integration propaganda and agitation propaganda. Those people in whom the cuddly values and the aversion to violence have been most deeply planted can't easily be persuaded to approve a bloody military operation.
Here the System's trick backfires to some extent. The activists, who have been "rebelling" all along in favor of the values of integration propaganda, continue to do so during wartime. They oppose the war effort not only because it is violent but because it is "racist," "colonialist," "imperialist," etc., all of which are contrary to the soft, cuddly values taught by integration propaganda.
The System's trick also backfires where the treatment of animals is concerned. Inevitably, many people extend to animals the soft values and the aversion to violence that they are taught with respect to humans. They are horrified by the slaughter of animals for meat and by other practices harmful to animals, such as the reduction of chickens to egg-laying machines kept in tiny cages or the use of animals in scientific experiments. Up to a point, the resulting opposition to mistreatment of animals may be useful to the System: Because a vegan diet is more efficient in terms of resource-utilization than a carnivorous one is, veganism, if widely adopted, will help to ease the burden placed on the Earth's limited resources by the growth of the human population. But activists' insistence on ending the use of animals in scientific experiments is squarely in conflict with the System's needs, since for the foreseeable future there is not likely to be any workable substitute for living animals as research subjects.
All the same, the fact that the System's trick does backfire here and there does not prevent it from being on the whole a remarkably effective device for turning rebellious impulses to the System's advantage.
It has to be conceded that the trick described here is not the only factor determining the direction that rebellious impulses take in our society. Many people today feel weak and powerless (for the very good reason that the System really does make us weak and powerless), and therefore identify obsessively with victims, with the weak and the oppressed. That's part of the reason why victimization issues, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and neocolonialism have become standard activist issues.
- An Example
I have with me an anthropology textbook[5] in which I've noticed several nice examples of the way in which university intellectuals help the System with its trick by disguising conformity as criticism of modern society. The cutest of these examples is found on pages 132–36, where the author quotes, in "adapted" form, an article by one Rhonda Kay Williamson, an intersexed person (that is, a person born with both male and female physical characteristics).
Williamson states that the American Indians not only accepted intersexed persons but especially valued them.[6] She contrasts this attitude with the Euro-American attitude, which she equates with the attitude that her own parents adopted toward her.
Williamson's parents mistreated her cruelly. They held her in contempt for her intersexed condition. They told her she was "cursed and given over to the devil," and they took her to charismatic churches to have the "demon" cast out of her. She was even given napkins into which she was supposed to "cough out the demon."
But it is obviously ridiculous to equate this with the modern Euro-American attitude. It may approximate the Euro-American attitude of 150 years ago, but nowadays almost any American educator psychologist, or mainstream clergyman would be horrified at that kind of treatment of an intersexed person. The media would never dream of portraying such treatment in a favorable light. Average middle-class Americans today may not be as accepting of the intersexed condition as the Indians were, but few would fail to recognize the cruelty of the way in which Williamson was treated.
Williamson's parents obviously were deviants, religious kooks whose attitudes and beliefs were way out of line with the values of the System. Thus, while putting on a show of criticizing modern Euro-American society, Williamson really is attacking only deviant minorities and cultural laggards who have not yet adapted to the dominant values of present-day America.
Haviland, the author of the book, on page 12 portrays cultural anthropology as iconoclastic, as challenging the assumptions of modern Western society. This is so far contrary to the truth that it would be funny if it weren't so pathetic. The mainstream of modern American anthropology is abjectly subservient to the values and assumptions of the System. When today's anthropologists pretend to challenge the values of their society, typically they challenge only the values of the past—obsolete and outmoded values now held by no one but deviants and laggards who have not kept up with the cultural changes that the System requires of us.
Haviland's use of Williamson's article illustrates this very well, and it represents the general slant of Haviland's book. Haviland plays up ethnographic facts that teach his readers politically correct lessons, but he understates or omits altogether ethnographic facts that are politically incorrect. Thus, while he quotes Williamson's account to emphasize the Indians' acceptance of intersexed persons, he does not mention, for example, that among many of the Indian tribes women who committed adultery had their noses cut off,[7] whereas no such punishment was inflicted on male adulterers; or that among the Crow Indians a warrior who was struck by a stranger had to kill the offender immediately, else he was irretrievably disgraced in the eyes of his tribe;[8] nor does Haviland discuss the habitual use of torture by the Indians of the eastern United States.[9] Of course, facts of that kind represent violence, machismo, and gender-discrimination, hence they are inconsistent with the present-day values of the System and tend to get censored out as politically incorrect.
Yet I don't doubt that Haviland is perfectly sincere in his belief that anthropologists challenge the assumptions of Western society. The capacity for self-deception of our university intellectuals will easily stretch that far.
To conclude, I want to make clear that I'm not suggesting that it is good to cut off noses for adultery, or that any other abuse of women should be tolerated, nor would I want to see anybody scorned or rejected because they are intersexed or because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, etc., etc., etc. But in our society today these matters are, at most, issues of reform. The System's neatest trick consists in having turned powerful rebellious impulses, which otherwise might have taken a revolutionary direction, to the service of these modest reforms.

[2] Even the most superficial review of the mass media in modern industrialized countries, or even in countries that merely aspire to modernity, will confirm that the System is committed to eliminating discrimination in regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc., etc., etc. It would be easy to find thousands of examples that illustrate this, but here we cite only three, from three disparate countries.
United States: "Public Displays of Affection," U.S. News & World Report, September 9, 2002, pages 42-43. This article provides a nice example of the way propaganda functions. It takes an ostensibly objective or neutral position on homosexual partnerships, giving some space to the views of those who oppose public acceptance of homosexuality. But anyone reading the article, with its distinctly sympathetic treatment of a homosexual couple, will be left with the impression that acceptance of homosexuality is desirable and, in the long run, inevitable. Particularly important is the photograph of the homosexual couple in question: A physically attractive pair has been selected and has been photographed attractively. No one with the slightest understanding of propaganda can fail to see that the article constitutes propaganda in favor of acceptance of homosexuality. And bear in mind that U.S. News & World Report is a right-of-center magazine.
Russia: "Putin Denounces Intolerance," The Denver Post, July 26, 2002, page 16A. "MOSCOW—President Vladimir Putin strongly denounced racial and religious prejudice on Thursday…'If we let this chauvinistic bacteria of either national or religious intolerance develop, we will ruin the country', Putin said in remarks prominently replayed on Russian television on Thursday night." Etc., etc.
Mexico: "Persiste racismo contra indígenas" ("Racism against indigenous people persists"), El Sol de México, January 11, 2002, page 1/B. Photo caption: "In spite of efforts to give dignity to the indigenous people of our country, they continue to suffer discrimination…." The article reports on the efforts of the bishops of Mexico to combat discrimination, but says that the bishops want to "purity" indigenous customs in order to liberate the women from their traditionally inferior status. El Sol de México is reputed to be a right-of-center newspaper.
Anyone who wanted to take the trouble could multiply these examples a thousand times over. The evidence that the System itself is set on eliminating discrimination and victimization is so obvious and so massive that one boggles at the radicals' belief that fighting these evils is a form of rebellion. One can only attribute it to a phenomenon well known to professional propagandists: People tend to block out, to fail to perceive or to remember, information that conflicts with their ideology. See the interesting article, "Propaganda," in The New Encyclopaedia Britannica, Volume 26, Macropaedia, 15th Edition, 1997, pages 171–79, specifically page 176.
[3] In this section I've said something about what the System is not, but I haven't said what the System is. A friend of mine has pointed out that this may leave the reader nonplussed, so I'd better explain that for the purposes of this article it isn't necessary to have a precise definition of what the System is. I couldn't think of any way of defining the System in a single, well-rounded sentence and I didn't want to break the continuity of the article with a long, awkward, and unnecessary digression addressing the question of what the System is, so I left that question unanswered. I don't think my failure to answer it will seriously impair the reader's understanding of the point that I want to make in this article.

2024.04.24 13:27 Cryomanco Would Moira’s plan really be a bad choice?
I just finished reading Hellfire Gala 2023 after Charles Leaves Krakoa and Im wondering if Moira’s plan to eliminate the X-Gene would be a bad decision?
Honestly I believe that it’s the only available choice as the Human Nature to preserve itself could never accept the existence of another superior race. and even without Orchis I believe someone other organisation would come along to annihilate the mutants just because they think that its possible for them to dominate the earth (even thought maybe they never would). They wouldn’t just leave them be out there in the world. I also honestly believe that even if Krakoa continued to exist, it would only be a matter of time for a mutant to believe his race worthy of ruling the entire planet and attempting to do so.
I don’t know exactly how Moira’s cure would work but I guess it de powers mutants and eliminates the possibility for humans to have offspring with the X gene. And looking at this option I would understand Moira’s intentions after many lifetimes of fighting and death this would be a painless solution where no one has to die.
Now of course most mutants like their powers and see them as gifts (Charles, Eric, Apocalypse, Wolverine) but I think also a fair amount of mutants like Rogue, Beast, Glob and many more with powers that make their life hard or with physical deformation would be glad to be de powered and have a normal life.
Not sure where the comics led after the Gala but Im only sharing my thoughts so far.
