So…what happened at last night’s 5+ hour meeting? The top story is that the committee voted 6/0/1 (the Mayor abstained) to ask the city for $79.4 million to fund our schools in the 2024-25 fiscal year. This is $8.2 million more than what the district received this year, $5 million more than the number initially provided to the district from the city, and $2.7 more than the number that we received at the May 6 meeting (which included $2.3 million worth of cuts to close the gap between the city’s initial number and the full ask). You can see this laid out before and after public comment (2:21 and 5:09 marks, respectively).
What’s next? The superintendent will present this “ask” to the city council as part of their review of the Mayor’s proposed city budget. Eventually, the Mayor will present a final city budget to the council and once approved, the amount allotted to the schools will come back to the Superintendent as a number so she and her team can create the final budget proposal within that final number. School committee will then need to vote to approve that budget for the upcoming fiscal year (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025).
What else? Recap below. As always, observations and opinions are my solely own. Agenda is here, recording is here. This update also includes some clarification about the difference between level funding and level services, as these are terms getting thrown around a lot.

1. Consent agenda - Two amendments (to add a link to one of the subcommittee meeting minutes and strike from the record the street addresses of students who presented at the budget hearing) but otherwise this approval was routine.
   
2. Report from the Ad Hoc Handbook Review subcommittee - The proposed policy (in the agenda) was approved in its first reading. (New policies get read twice over the course of two meetings to give relevant stakeholders a chance to comment on them, unless the committee decides to waive the second reading. We declined to do so last night, so this is now the time for district and school administration to provide feedback on the policy.
   
3. Report from Behavioral Health & Special Education subcommittee - The recommendation to co-locate the Curtis-Tufts school in/with the new high school was approved. The administration and building committee will need to flash this out for inclusion in the materials to be presented to the MSBA.
   
4. CCSR recognition - summary of the program by advisor Richard Trotter (400 students, 70 projects this year), two student presentations (a high school student who talked about the program generally as well as his Mystic River clean up projects, and two elementary school students talking about their Letter Carriers Safety program), and appreciation for the support of the Cummings Foundation.
   
5. Humanities awards recognition - Young Playwrights Project, Student Government Day, Boston Globe Scholastic Writing Awards, Geography Bee, Day on the Hill, Shakespearean Monologue Competition, Immigration Learning Center Teen Perspectives Contest, Ethics Bowl, Mock Trial, Model United Nations - congratulations to all students and their advisors
   
6. High school update & climate survey results presented by principals Marta Cabral and Chad Fallon - This included data comparisons between last year and this year (all trends were positive), discussion of community norms and core values, an update on the exploratory program (CTE/arts rotation and placements), and some highlights from several CTE programs/projects (scarpentry heds, health assisting, awards, licensing, apprenticeships/placements, the biodiesel collaborative project, and the robotics team), three year strategic priorities, an update on last year’s Welch Report (various pieces in progress, other recommendations planned to go into effect next school year), and a proposal for an alternative program proposal to provide a small group learning environment to meet individual needs (pilot was approved by the committee for next school year).
   
7. Proposal for CTE program expansion and additions - Chad Fallon provided an overview of the enrollment/wait list numbers, shared the results of a (still-in-progress) student survey about potential new offerings (criminal justice/protective services, dental assisting, IT/networking, plumbing/HVAC, veterinary science, and the various “other” responses to an open-ended prompt), and laid out plans for expanding those programs with the highest wait list numbers (auto technology, cosmetology, electrical, and health assisting programs). The committee passed a motion directing the administration to further flesh out the proposals for inclusion in the building committee’s materials for MSBA.
   
8. Budget presentation (6:38 p.m., so 1.5 hours into the meeting) - Interim Finance Director Gerry McCue provided some additional context for the budget proposal received on May 6. There were questions and comments from the school committee and student representatives (including a petition), and Member Ruseau made a motion to send a cuts-free budget to city council and the Mayor.
   

Public comment from students, alums, teachers, and parents ensued, focusing on the coordinator of performing arts position, marching band and color guard, the Missituk teaching staff, and a smattering of other items including library, technology, administrative assistants, and kindergarten numbers.
Also of note, the Superintendent answered some questions about the performing arts coordinator position around 8:30 (3.5 hours in).

1. Budget vote - The committee voted to approve the motion offered before public comment began. As noted previously, this is NOT the approved budget but rather, the amount we (school committee and the district) are asking the city for. The city council will review the request in the context of the full city budget, ask questions, offer opinions, but eventually the Mayor’s office will present a final budget for city council approval and, once approved, whatever the school number is will come back to the district, who will then prepare a final budget for school committee to vote on.
   
2. Motion to table the update from the MSBA building committee’s meeting last week - passed and, following condolences, the meeting was adjourned. Next regular meeting is June 3.
   

BONUS CONTENT! What is the difference between a level funding budget and a level services budget? Level funding provides schools with the same dollar amount as they received in the year before. Because things tend to cost more year to year (due to inflation, contractual raises, etc.) having the same amount of money usually means reducing services. Level services, on the other hand, keeps the services the same but due to aforementioned cost increases, requires a higher dollar amount than the previous year. What did the district/school committee ask for this year? We voted to ask not just for level services, but level services plus additional funding to meet additional district needs (the items presented at the May 6 meeting, nothing new since then).
Superintendent should be at tonight's city council meeting to make this ask and answer questions.

I guess I probably shouldn't consider myself a "newtuber" as I've been on and off for the last 14 years, however recently I've been gaining a lot of traction from a few of my videos (a video I made in march is sitting at 380k views and most recent is nearly at 80k in 3+ weeks)
Currently I'm trying to ride this wind, see where it goes, maybe I'll get somewhere. 6k gained subs in 2 months is basically a personal best for me 😅
Anyway my point: prior to the last 4 videos I made, I had already uploaded 1,000+ videos. These are mostly Playthroughs of Star Wars: The Old Republic (back in it's prime I was probably one of the few SWTOR YouTubers on the platform). I had a couple people comment how they saw my channel had 1,000 videos and was like: "woah..."
My problem is that the content I've chosen to make now is DRASTICALLY different, and I wouldn't want people to feel deterred.
Should I potentially set most of my other videos to Private to help, in a way, start cleaner and fresher, and if so, will that drop the number of videos that shows on my channel page to reflect it, or is that number there until you delete the video?
For the record I wouldn't "say" my content before these last 4 videos get traction. At most I get between 0-50 views per video in any 28 day period, mostly on the very low end so it doesn't feel worth it?

Okay, so here's how it goes;
I recently learned that, despite my family having lived and settled over 200-some odd years ago in one area in Ohio, prior to that they had arrived and settled where I currently live now, in Maryland. Their last name was Sparrow, and they are the only fanily of original colonists that still has their name on the land here (Sparrow's Point). It began with a guy named Thomas Sparrow, and after about three more Thomas Sparrow's (the last of whom died in 1718 and became a pirate, briefly 😂), his grandson split after the revolutionary war and went to Ohio. Supposedly, the burials of the three Thomas Sparrow's took place in a church named All Hallows Parish, in birdsville, MD.
However, when I went to the cemetery while I was able to find a ton of more recent burials (between 1820-2004, and Col. William Burgess' grave, there was not one single Sparrow plot there; in fact, there was a huge break in headstone dates between 1732-1821. Only one grave I found dated back to 1732, and after that nothing until 1821. I asked the church for a burial map, or plot map, but so far, nothing.
I can not believe an entire fam plot would disappear. Any advice on how to locate their graves? The records I found say they should be there, but nothing. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m currently getting quotes to get a stage 1 APR ECU and TCU tune on my b9 S5 but the shop I’m going through is recommending some extra parts on top of the tune and I just want to make sure I’m not getting screwed. They recommended I get new spark plugs and ignition coils and quoted me for 119.70 on the spark plugs and 276.42 on the ignition coils. Including labor that comes out to 726. They also said I should get a new intake system and quoted me 1106 for an apr carbon fiber intake. Including labor that comes out to 1519. In total for every thing including the tunes the quote is for about $4000. I was expecting to pay around 1500 five or take for this but the intake and plugs really jumped that up, is it worth it/needed. I’m checking my service records now to make sure I haven’t just replaced my ignition coils and plugs in my last servicing.

I've made a few others as well, but this post isn't about that, I just wanted to showcase the fact that I can build the upcoming idea, but I'm wondering if it would be worth it to develop it for anyone else.
The idea:
A phone app that lets users import a route GPX file and/or start an activity. The app is designed to work entirely offline, in your pocket, without much of a GUI, providing voiced turn-by-turn directions if following a route.
While you are riding, it allows you to ask questions or give commands into your Bluetooth headset, like, "What's the distance until the next aid station?", "Route me back to the beginning on the flattest possible route.", "What's my best 20-minute normalized power so far?", "What's my current distance?", "What's my net elevation gain?", "What mile has the beginning of the biggest climb on the route?".
Utilizing the physics simulator code and your riding so far, it could even determine when you'll be where, so you can ask, "How much longer until I'm back on pavement?", "When should I start heading back to avoid the sun going down when cycling?".
I also plan on having it continuously monitor and analyze your ride, so if you finish a climb it can recognize this and state "Nice job! You managed 340 watts for 3 minutes up the last 300ft climb!".
Basically, the idea is, that this could replace your head unit (or accompany it nicely).
I even intend it to have rerouting capabilities, i.e. "take me to the nearest gas station".
So far, I've managed to develop a functioning Android app that works entirely offline, monitoring for speech using webRTCVAD, recording speech to memory, transcribing speech using a specially trained Mozilla Deepspeech model, on the phone, tokenizing the transcription with a WordPeice algorithm, and feeding it to a specially trained BERT Tensorflow model which maps your intent to a particular function.
I plan on developing this app no matter what for my purposes as I feel having practically limitless knowledge of the entire route, and the activity thus far, as well as voiced turn-by-turn directions that function entirely offline could help me with upcoming gravel races. However, if people find this concept interesting, I'd buy a MacBook to make an IOS version and flesh out the interface to be more user-friendly and have things like, a login, a connect with Strava feature, etc.

There is a field near me that is full of wildflowers, and it's perfect for eastern meadowlarks. I have seen and heard some there and have a few audio recordings for proof, but the part of the field that appeals most to them is going to get destroyed to build a building, joining the other buildings in the area that are already there. There is a small trail with a lake nearby, but I just went through birding the area and the meadowlarks stayed in their field away from the lake.
Will they be able to find a new home on their own once the construction starts? I know that most birds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, but I don't know how that is enforced on a practical level. As I understand it, if the construction site has a permit then I can't really do anything. I have no idea if there are nests (I didn't actually go into the field, I just stayed on a sidewalk trail nearby) but I have seen the meadowlarks both today and last winter in the area so I know they probably live there, or at least migrate there. There are other birds in the area like red-winged blackbirds, but I think they would be able to stay there because of the lake.

I'm torn between these two devices. Both seem well-balanced, but I’ve heard positive things about the Motorola G84.
I'm primarily looking for a phone that offers smooth overall system navigation. I usually spend a lot of time browsing and using social media apps. I occasionally play moderately demanding games like Brawl Stars and Pokemon Unite. The battery should last me the whole day.
I'd like to mention that, in addition to Motorola's clean interface, I also like that it is lightweight at just 167 grams. I haven't been able to decide mainly because the Poco seems to have a better screen with those slim bezels, and boasts 67W fast charging.
Regarding software updates, I'm aware that Motorola doesn't have a good track record, but honestly, it's not a dealbreaker for me.
Both phones fall within the same price range in my country, with the Motorola priced only $15 higher than the Poco.

I am a health journalist currently working on a piece for The Guardian about the conversations and negotiations couples go through when deciding on permanent contraception. This piece is inspired by research and statistics that show that despite vasectomies being an easier, faster healing, and cheaper surgery, there are more women who get salpingectomies for contraception than there are men who get vasectomies. (In one study, husbands cited "losing manliness" as a reason they resisted vasectomies. Some women cited feeling safer knowing they themselves had been sterilized.)
When a couple is considering which of them might get surgery like this, everyone's story is so personal and unique -- I'm interested in hearing about the fears and stigmas and debates that happen leading up to this decision.
If any of you are willing to share, I'm looking to talk to couples (of diverse ages, ethnicities, and child having/non having status) who have had either a bilateral salpingectomy or vasectomy, about these conversations with partners leading up to a decision to get surgery. If needed, I can omit last names or talk about maintaining anonymity other ways. If anyone would like to reach out off-the-record first, I'm also more than happy to do that.

Hello all, I will be arriving in Juneau tomorrow night and plan to do some hiking on Thursday. I was hoping to walk along the shore at low tide and was wondering if the rainforest trail beach, or the false outer point beach would be preferable.
Neither have really been mentioned on previous posts about tide pools, but would one spot have more to offer at low tide vs the other? I have to pick up some friends at the airport at 9, but should be able to do both, just wondering how I should manage my time.
After I grab my friends at the airport we are looking to do a hike in the 3-5 mile range (we have to be back at the airport at 4 to grab our last friend and are wanting to do Treadwell mines after). Initially I was looking at doing the waterfall and east Mendenhall glacier trail, but I am wondering if hiking the west trail 2.5-3 miles in (but not to the glacier) would have more to offer. Others have recommended Perseverance, so now that's also in the back of my mind.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Recently I started posting ASMR videos on my channel. The first ones had really bad quality and to be honest not the greatest sound or very interesting for the wider audience. Since then I upped my game, improved the quality of recording, tweaked the blue yeti etc etc. After that the channel took off a little bit. For three videos I had a total of 1200 views and gained like 60 subscribers (currently at 78). The thing is the past 3 videos I have posted, I believe them to be as good but they don’t get any views or get suggested at all by YouTube (literally the last video had 0 new viewers, it was all from people who had already subscribed, which I of course appreciate).
I have created the account in 2019 and posted a few ASMR videos in 2019 that have since then been removed by me. Is it because the account is so old YouTube is not giving me a chance ?
Should I create a new account ?
I have the profile all set up. Images, descriptions, etc. I put the video in the category Entertainment, put the tags (if you can recommend tags that would be great), I believe everything. I interact with people through the account and have been using it more to watch videos and comment on other people’s videos.
I seriously don’t know what to do. I do this as a hobby and of course do it for me. But it would be nice to be seen a little bit. I do it for myself with the intent of providing people with something good and relaxing they can watch.

Hi, we live in a housing estate in a medium sized town. Last summer we had new neighbours moved in right next door, semi-detached. They built a chicken coup and had 3 chickens, they weren't too loud to begin with. Then over winter they incubated few eggs, one ended up being a rooster, ridiculous loud, I gently complained after 2 day, they removed but kept the 4th hen. This spring they cluck non-stop when they are not in the coup at night. They are so loud it's driving me insane. It's impossible to sit in the garden and it's summertime. Our kids and their kids are really good friends by now so I want to proceed as amicable as possible. Is it allowed in Ireland to keep chickens in the small garden in the urban setting? I don't know how to proceed. I've started making recordings of the noise heard in my garden, different times of the day they just cluck and cluck and cluck and it's so annoying. Maybe I'm being unreasonable?. Any advice welcome.
