2024.05.19 16:26 Dependent-Airport267 3 months to improve levels

I've recently had a blood test and was subsequently called by the GP as my cholesterol is a little high.
My readings are: Serum cholesterol 5.5 mmol/L (converts to 100mg/dl) Serum triglyceride 2.84 mmol/L (~50 mg/dl) Serum HDL cholesterol 1.2 mmol/L (22 mg/dl) Serum LDL cholesterol 3.0 mmol/L [not valid as non fasting blood] (50 mg/dl) Serum cholesterol/HDL ratio 4.6 Serum non high density lipoprotein cholesterol level 4.3 mmol/L [< 7.5]
I know the serum cholesterol is near the trigger of 5.8 for Statins. However looking at other sites HDL and LDL would seem not to be too alarming, but my tri's seem high.
I'm a 55 year old male. I play competitive (league) badminton twice a week, walk the dog twice a day but do have a sedentary desk job (in front of a PC).
For main meal I mainly eat chicken breast normally with vegetables with rice or pasta, one day 5% minced beef and cook all my own meals from natural ingredients (no jar, sachets). I eat my 5 a day, and drink alcohol twice a week. I do not drink fizzy drinks. For breakfast I have granola with semi skimmed milk. I can definitely look to cut cheese intake.
I am clinically obese.
We have agreed that I will be tested again in 3 months but am looking for ideas of what to change. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Are citrus bergamot and Berberine worth considering?

2024.05.19 14:21 Famous-Slice1843 Current News Regarding Erythritol Safety

(Excerpt from "Nature Medicine". Official study title: "The artificial sweetener erythritol and cardiovascular even trisk".)
There's been a lot of discussion recently regarding the potentially unsafe use of a very popular artificial sweetener known as "Erythritol". As humans, we typically dislike any information which may require us to change our habits/behaviors or stop using products we enjoy. As a result, it is very common to immediately dismiss a report containing negative or dangerous findings about the use of such products. When it was announced that tobacco may be causing heart attacks/strokes/artery disease, MILLIONS of people refused the results because they really enjoyed smoking (myself included). I have been using Erythritol for a few years. I love how potent it is, how it tastes, and how it has no effect on diabetes-related issues. To stop using Erythritol would be a major inconvenience for me, so I do not enjoy discovering the product may actually be very dangerous. I've provided the opening paragraph to the ACTUAL study that was recently conducted on the effects of Erythritol. PLEASE -- disregard the incredibly irresponsible reports that the study only consisted of 8 people or that it only included obese, old men. There were a few thousand participants involved in the study of all ages and body types/status. The full article could not be published here but seems to be available through various sites (the actual article requires access to "nature medicine", and the official name of the study is "The artificial sweetener erythritol and cardiovascular event risk". It's a long, boring read, but it contains the actual facts of the study. The main point of the finding is: Our bodies reaction to the product Erythritol is causing SUBSTANTIALLY increased platelet production (blood clots). These clots are flowing to the brain/heart and immediately triggering a stroke or heart attack. These reactions are NOT a result of age or physical condition. Anyone at any age with narrow arteries/capillaries or a reduced circulatory system can suffer one of these clots. It is a fact that, those in poor physical condition or those individuals over the age of 50 are more likely to experience adverse reactions to blood clots. However, not every blood clot results in a stroke or heart attack. Young people with poor eating habits or pre-diabetes (1 in 3 Americans) can simply suffer a loss of circulation to a limb or organ. At any rate, blood clots are very dangerous and deserve our attention.
(Abbreviated using "...." for length only)
"Artificial sweeteners are widely used sugar substitutes, but little is known about their long-term effects on cardiometabolic disease risks. Here we examined the commonly used sugar substitute erythritol and atherothrombotic disease risk. In initial....studies in patients undergoing cardiac risk assessment (1,157) circulating levels of multiple polyol sweeteners, especially erythritol, were associated with incident (3 year) risk for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE; includes death or nonfatal myocardial infarction or stroke). Subsequent targeted metabolomics analyses in independent US (2,149) and European (833) validation cohorts of stable patients undergoing elective cardiac evaluation confirmed this association......(with 95% confidence). At physiological levels, erythritol enhances platelet reactivity.....blood clotting. Finally, in a prospective pilot intervention study..... erythritol ingestion in healthy volunteers (8) induced marked and sustained (>2 d) increases in plasma erythritol levels well above thresholds associated with heightened platelet reactivity and thrombosis potential in in vitro and in vivo studies. <---(This is the group of "8" people which are constantly being mentioned---it was just an "on the way out the door" test to quickly study one final means of comparison, but is obviously NOT a significant part of the study) Our findings reveal that erythritol is both associated with incident Major Adverse Cardiac Event risk and fosters enhanced.... thrombosis (blood clotting). Studies assessing the long-term safety of Erythritol are warranted".

Flash flooding in northern Afghanistan killed 300+ people and destroyed 1,000+ homes. Hundreds of thousands of others have been affected. Last month, similar floods in the region killed 70+. Four died in Texas storms last week as well.
Venezuela is suffering from record wildfires, which so far this year have burned about 5M acres—almost the size of Sardinia. Some experts think indigenous people started the blaze as an attempt at forest clearance, which quickly got out of hand. “Institutional failures” compounded the disaster when the ailing government responded with an inadequate number of poorly equipped firefighters. Another study from last week examined the impact of wildfires on soil health.
Flooding and “cold lava” killed 50+ in Indonesia, injuring dozens and displacing several thousand. Cold lava is a mixture of water and rocks tumbling down the side of a volcano. Meanwhile, an actual volcano erupted in Indonesia, sending smoke & ash 5000m high; further eruptions are possible soon.
The Swiss Re Institute published a 37-page report last week about natural disasters in 2023—and how much damage, in USD, they caused. The largest catastrophe was the February 7.8 earthquake in Türkiye & Syria, which killed 59,000+ people and caused $163B+ in damage. The report is full of interesting graphics & data about natural disasters.
“Last year, economic losses from natural catastrophes reached USD 280 billion, meaning that 62% of the global losses were uninsured….the insured losses surpassed USD 100 billion for the fourth consecutive year….annual insured losses will grow by 5–7% over the long term…today’s insured losses could double in 10 years….There were 142 insured-loss inducing catastrophes in 2023, a new record. Most were of medium severity, which we define as events resulting in losses of USD 1–5 billion….Over the last 30 years, we estimate that natural catastrophe insured losses have grown by 3 percentage points more annually than the global economy (in inflation adjusted terms)...”
Flooding and heat waves are impacting Brazil’s oranges, responsible for about 70% of the world’s supply. One food analysts declared that the “era of cheap food is over”—in the UK, at least. That may be one reason why UK residents took record food bank packages last year. Madagascar is struggling to adapt to a future with far less rainfall.
France is growing more concerned about a dam on Lake Geneva, controlled exclusively by Switzerland. The Rhône River, which begins in Switzerland and flows south through France, is shrinking in summers as climate change melts Switzerland’s remaining glaciers.
The Tonlé San River has been dammed in Vietnam, lowering the level in Cambodia and sometimes drying the river downstream entirely. Meanwhile, China’s lychee harvest is getting blasted by rain, impacting the world’s largest source of lychee. And, once again, Saudi Arabia is suffering flooding in its inland regions. 7 dead in historic flooding in Iran.
The eminent climate scientist James Hansen posted that, since “human-made aerosols and their cooling effect are in decline,” the cooling effect of La Niña will be counterbalanced by these rising temperatures. He also identifies a “large anomaly of increased absorbed solar radiation at midlatitudes in the Northern Hemisphere” responsible for rising temperatures there. CO2 levels are rising faster today than they have at any point in the previous 50,000 years…and a study of millennia-old trees determined last summer was the hottest worldwide in 2,000+ years…
Record nighttime May temperatures were tied in the Philippines and Vietnam. A couple Indonesian cities broke records for May temperatures. And a number of southern African states saw more records drop. And Toronto saw a record tied for the number of days reaching 14 °C (57 °F). A heat wave has returned to Bangladesh. Flooding in Cali (pop: 2.9M), Colombia.
The University of Washington was ordered to stop a geoengineering project that scientists sere conducting from the deck of a decommissioned aircraft carrier. The experiment ejected aerosolized saltwater in an attempt to reflect solar radiation. A comparative study in Nature Communications of a number of carbon pricing found that, yes, carbon pricing does work to reduce the total CO2 emitted.
It’s that time of the year again. Wildfires in Canada grow, some of which are moving towards the tar sands—forcing thousands to evacuate. 39 of the total nation’s blazes are “out of control,” resulting in air quality alerts in the United States. Meanwhile, across the Caribbean, water shortages have become the new normal, and residents (and tourists) are finding their old consumption habits hard to change. St. Lucia has declared a water emergency. In Myanmar, water shortages worsen, particularly as related to the spiraling conflict.
At least ⅛ of Europeans live in a place at risk of extreme flooding—so says a 175-page report from the European Environment Agency posted on Wednesday. The number of people living in flood-risk coastal areas in the EU & UK is expected to jump 24% by 2050. The graphics-packed report also considers how flooding will impact healthcare facilities, mental health, wastewater treatment plants, the spread of disease, cyanobacteria, permafrost thaw, and much else.
“Europe has seen devastating floods following record rainfall, droughts of magnitudes not experienced in hundreds of years, continuing sea level rise, and increasing lake and sea temperatures….permanent water stress already affects 30% of people in southern Europe….since 2018, more than half of Europe has been impacted by extreme drought conditions….Climate change is expected to increase mercury bioaccumulation in the marine food chain due to rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification and permafrost thawing….Depression, anxiety and PTSD may persist for years after a flooding event….Under the changing climate, northern Europe is becoming wetter in general, but drier in summer. Southern Europe is becoming drier, especially in winter. For central-eastern and western Europe, the trend is less clear…” -selections from the report
Milan suffered flooding last week, the worst May flooding in 170 years. Early spring in the UK has disrupted migratory bird species and their usual patterns.
A 74-page working paper which is not yet peer-reviewed claims that earlier estimates for how much GDP would be impacted by another 1 °C temperature rise is way less than it would be in actuality. The paper claims the real cost (in USD) is about 6x greater. They claim “global temperature has much more pronounced impacts on economic activity than local temperature” and that extreme weather is mostly behind the projected decline in productivity.

Epidemiologists are worried about how climate change in Africa may extend the life of disease-bearers like ticks and mosquitoes. Other epidemiologists are worried about how cattle may become a permanent reservoir for H5N1. Growing traced of bird flu have been found in wastewater testing in the U.S., but investigators think it may be runoff from infected dairy farms.
Obesity, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure rates today globally are 50% higher than in 2000—though researchers claim that air pollution still poses a larger threat. Of a study participants in Hawai’i, 75% had respiratory issues, probably from the Maui wildfires last year.
The 2024 World Migration Report is out, and its 384 pages are not as apocalyptic as one might think. However, internally displaced people are at their all-time highest. India, Mexico, Russia, China, and Syria lead the world in emigrants; another document contains the definitions for who exactly constitutes a migrant. Unfortunately much of the data relied upon ends in 2022. Data from this year, not included in the above report, indicates a 40% jump in traffic through the Darien Gap compared to the same time period in 2023.
“The last two years saw major migration and displacement events that have caused great hardship and trauma, as well as loss of life….There have also been large-scale displacements triggered by climate- and weather-related disasters in many parts of the world in 2022 and 2023, including in Pakistan, the Philippines, China, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Colombia….disinformation tactics are increasingly being used by nefarious actors with negative impacts on public, political and social media discourse on migration….Forced displacement is the highest on record in the modern era…overconsumption and overproduction linked to unsustainable economic growth, resource depletion and biodiversity collapse, as well as ongoing climate change (including global heating) are continuing to grip the world….the risk of further conflict has not been higher in decades, as military spending reached a new record high of USD 2,240 billion in 2022…” -excerpts from the introduction
Another report, focusing on internal displacement, came out last week; its 69 pages show a cross-section of about 47M people displaced by natural disasters (56%) or armed conflict (44%). Most of the disasters were storms & flooding, and most of the conflicts were civil wars of some form. This report also provides detailed region-by-region analyses—with sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 46% of global IDPs.
“Conflict and violence triggered 13.5 million movements, the highest figure for the past 15 years….Disasters and conflict are presented as different triggers, but their impacts can overlap, often leading to repeated and/ or protracted displacement….Drought triggered 331,000 displacements in Somalia….Floods triggered 550,000 displacements in Ethiopia….Conflict and violence triggered 3.8 million displacements in DRC in 2023, a slight fall from the record four million in 2022, but still the second-highest figure globally after Sudan….nearly two-thirds of the internal displacements recorded in 2023 originated from Khartoum state. More than 39 per cent of the state's inhabitants were forced to flee, leaving entire neighbourhoods empty….Criminal and communal violence triggered nearly three-quarters of Nigeria's 291,000 conflict displacements….” -selections from the spotlight on sub-Saharan Africa
Experts are concerned about the mental health impacts that climate change has on our minds. Hotter temperatures reportedly increase depression & aggression. Wildfires and storms can cause PTSD. Workers feel stress and desperation as their usual industries are impacted. And air pollution influences ordinary brain processes in many ways.
Some analysts believe “Peak China” may be over, signaling a period of economic tapering-off, as well as a growing militancy. Increasing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods are continuing to separate the two economies. The Netherlands finally formed a provisional government, though its proposed immigration & farming policies have set it at odds with the EU.
The Federal Reserve, the U.S. central bank, released a 46-page report on potential climate risks to the banking system’s resilience. As far as I understood, most of the risk lies in extreme weather events and the risk to insurance agencies.
Part of southeast England experienced an outbreak of Cryptosporidium, a diarrhea & vomiting illness, highly contagious, which can last weeks. At least 22 cases have been reported. Meanwhile, the CDC is issuing warnings about the more dangerous strain of monkeypox circulating in the DRC, although cases are currently limited to Africa.
North Carolina’s Senate voted to ban mask-wearing last week, under the reasoning that it would make police identification of protestors difficult. An fMRI study found lasting neurological changes in COVID survivors; they “had significantly higher cognitive complaints of mental fatigue and cognitive failure….even two years after recovering.” Experts say a summer rise in COVID cases is coming to the United States.
A study on The Canadian/American Great Lakes found that PFAS levels are increasing in the 3 largest lakes (Superior, Huron, and Michigan), while decreasing in the other two (Erie, Ontario). The study also found that precipitation is the primary means by which the Lakes are accumulating PFAS, since the chemicals are small & stable enough to move through the water cycle. Meanwhile, in England’s Lake District, a telecom failure resulted in raw sewage being pumped into England’s largest and most famous lake, Windermere, on-and-off for 10 hours; and a major British water CEO took a $4M USD pay package last year. And a look into the Chicago River’s health found that microplastics & trash are endangering health & biodiversity.

An assassination attempt by a lone wolf on Slovakia’s PM left him in critical condition, but likely to survive. 11 civilians were slain by cartel fighters in a few battles in Mexico. Violence continues to spiral out of control in Goma, DRC.
In Haiti, everything worsens indefinitely. Guns have reportedly entered from Florida, a phenomenon which officials call an “iron river.” Police have been put on the defensive against the growing might of the gang warlords.
A brawl broke out in Taiwan’s parliament. An Iranian plot was allegedly foiled to smuggle weapons into Jordan to destabilize the pro-U.S. regime.
Dozens more died in Sudan from escalating violence around Darfur. People are warning about “a disaster on top of a disaster” and the possibility of Sudan splitting apart. Others have called it “hell on earth” as 1,000+ refugees cross the Chad border every day. Disease and malnutrition are growing, while famine encroaches upon 9M helpless victims of the conflict—but the world’s attention is elsewhere.
The U.S. Army Engineers completed constructing the pier in Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. Some 600,000 Gazans have been displaced from Rafah already, and fighting has escalated against Hamas militants in northern Gaza.
Taliban forces skirmished with Pakistani soldiers for about 90 minutes last week. Taliban attacks in Pakistan, and counterattacks have resulted in a kind of ambient disruption for the rocky border zone.
Violent protests—and counteroperationsare continuing in New Caledonia (pop: 270,000), a Pacific island part of overseas France. The riots, which have killed 6 people so far, began after metropolitan France proposed a plan to expand voting rights beyond indigenous residents. A state of emergency has been declared amid worries about a spiral of violence taking hold.
As the Sahel dries out, experts are concerned about the links to rising terrorism in the region. The Sahel accounts for over 40% of global terrorism deaths—according to the analysts’ understanding of “terrorism.” Mali in particular has reportedly become home to 41 new, different non-state armed groups (NSAGs) since 2007. A contested election in Chad resulted in the consolidation of the interim leader’s power.
“If governments are continually unable to solve regional issues, the people will be at the whim of any terror group that has a basic organization. It serves these groups’ interests to promote insecurity where they can and create security where they want. A “hearts and minds” campaign in the Sahel could lead to long-term and locally supported insurgencies in a land that is currently rife with civil strife.” -from the article
Some wargamers concluded that a Trump victory in 2020 would spell the end of NATO, or at least the end of its utility. Vladimir Putin replaced his minister of defense with a top economic advisor, just before going to Beijing to reaffirm their friendship with “no limits.” Some say Putin is planning on a forever war. Some say NATO is gearing up for one, too.
Russia made several gains in the suburbs of Kharkiv, seizing several settlements which some analysts doubt they will hold. Putin claims they aren’t really trying to take Kharkiv anyway… Russia also made small progress in the Donbas—although they suffered their largest one-day casualties since the start of the war. The U.S. allocated another $2B to hasten the delivery of weapons to the front lines. The next weeks will be crucial on the front. Switzerland has invited 160+ nations to send delegates to a peace summit intended to design a path to making peace in this War.

Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest:
-Brazil’s flooding was really, really bad, judging from this post and its accompanying images. Across just one of Brazil’s 26 states, 600,000+ people have been made homeless, 100+ have died, and the storm season isn’t over yet. Some of the flooding isn’t expected to subside for another month.
-How specifically might climate change make humanity extinct? This thread crowdsources a number of plausible ways, from ordinary famines to nuclear war and even a massive deoxygenation process. I tend to think it will be a consequence of an eventual nuclear exchange, followed by extended famine and disease.

IntroductionThe rise of fast food chains in the United States from 2000 to 2010 had an impact on both the culture and economy. This period saw an increase in obesity rates among Americans, which coincided with the growth of these eateries. In this essay we delve into the connection between the expansion of fast food franchises and the obesity epidemic examining factors that influence health. Through an analysis of data, health studies and relevant literature our goal is to provide an understanding of how consuming food has played a role in fueling obesity during this particular decade, in America. The Growth of Fast Food Chains
Between 2000 and 2010 there was a rise in the fast food industry. Popular chains such as McDonalds, Burger King and Subway expanded their reach by opening stores to meet the demand for budget friendly meals. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of fast food eateries increased by around 20% during this timeframe (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011). This expansion made fast food more convenient for a range of people, including kids and teenagers.
Obesity Trends in the U.S. (2000 2010)
The prevalence of obesity in America has been on a trajectory during the early years of the 21st century. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the rate of obesity among adults rose from 30.5% in 2000 to 35.7% in 2010 (CDC, 2011). Similarly among children and teens aged between 2 and 19 years old obesity rates increased from 13.9% to 16.9% over that period. This continuous increase signals a concerning public health issue with impacts on illness rates, mortality rates and healthcare expenses.
The Impact of Fast Food, on Eating Habits
food is commonly known for its levels of calories, excessive saturated fats, sugars and sodium with little nutritional value. These aspects of food are closely associated with weight gain and obesity. Studies show that regular consumption of food is linked to consuming calories and maintaining poor eating habits (Bowman & Vineyard 2004). Research conducted by Pereira et al. (2005) revealed that individuals who ate food than twice a week were more likely to gain weight and develop insulin resistance compared to those who consumed it less frequently.
Influence of Socioeconomic Factors
The easy availability and affordability of food make it an attractive option for people with incomes. Fast food establishments are often concentrated in low income areas where residents have limited access to dining choices (Powell et al. 2007). This situation, referred to as "food deserts " , worsens the issue of obesity because disadvantaged groups tend to rely on food as their main source of nutrition.
Impact of Advertising and Promotion
The aggressive advertising tactics used by fast food companies also have a significant influence on eating behaviors particularly among young individuals, like children and teenagers.
Many businesses invest sums of money each year in marketing showcasing their products across platforms, like TV, the web and social networks. Kids are especially influenced by these strategies that highlight the appeal and ease of food reinforcing harmful dietary patterns early on.
The impact of obesity, on health is significant and variedObesity is a factor in chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers (Flegal et al., 2012). The rise in obesity rates has led to an increase in health issues putting a strain on the healthcare system. The financial implications of obesity are also noteworthy with studies indicating that medical costs linked to obesity made up around 10% of healthcare expenses in the United States during that time (Cawley & Meyerhoefer 2012).
Policies and public health effortsIn response to the escalating obesity crisis, different policies and public health efforts have been put into action at state and local levels. These initiatives aim to encourage eating habits through measures like food labeling requirements, restrictions on advertising foods to children and campaigns raising awareness about the risks of obesity (Koplan et al., 2007). Schools have been a point for intervention well, with endeavors to enhance the nutritional value of school meals and boost physical activity among students.ExamplesVarious real life examples and stories showcase the effectiveness of taking action to address the issue of obesity. For example, New York City put in place a set of strategies to combat obesity, such as displaying calorie information on menus and prohibiting trans fats in restaurant dishes. These initiatives led to improvements in people's eating habits and a slight decrease in obesity levels, within the community (Dumanovsky et al. 2011).ChallengesThe obesity epidemic still poses challenges despite the efforts to address it. Unhealthy eating habits deeply ingrained in society, the presence of the fast food industry and disparities in status all add layers of complexity to this issue. Moving forward it is crucial to focus on creating an environment that encourages choices for vulnerable communities. This entails advocating for policies that restrict the marketing of foods to children, enhancing access to options in low income areas and urging food companies to improve the health profile of their products.
Psychological marketingWhen it comes to food marketing companies go beyond advertising tactics by leveraging deep rooted psychological triggers that influence consumer behavior. Bright colors, catchy tunes and recognizable mascots are commonly used in food ads to build a memorable brand image. This technique is particularly effective with audiences like children and teenagers who're more susceptible and likely to develop lasting brand loyalties. Research indicates that exposure to these advertisements can lead children to prefer calorie, nutrient foods ultimately impacting their dietary decisions and contributing to weight gain (Boyland & Halford 2013).The impact of portion sizes
One overlooked but significant factor contributing to the obesity crisis is the increasing sizes of portions served by food chains. Over time portion sizes have substantially grown, with meals exceeding the recommended calorie intake for a single meal. Young and Nestles (2002) study reveals that fast food item portions have expanded over the years with some items now more than double their size. This phenomenon of "portion distortion" results in calorie consumption as individuals tend to eat when faced with larger servings often underestimating the actual caloric content.
Changes in lifestyle and time constraints
The contemporary way of life characterized by schedules and time limitations has also played a role in the heightened dependence on fast food. With an increase in dual income households and longer work hours many people find themselves lacking the time to cook meals. Fast food emerges as a solution offering cost effective options that align with busy routines. Nonetheless this convenience comes at a price as frequent consumption of food is linked to dietary patterns and increased calorie intake contributing to the surge in obesity rates (Smith, Ng & Popkin 2013).Another significant measure involves restricting the promotion of foods to children. By reducing kids exposure to food ads policymakers aim to lessen the impact of marketing on their eating habits. Some cities have also imposed taxes on beverages and unhealthy foods in an effort to discourage consumption through penalties. While the effectiveness of these strategies may vary they mark progress in combating the obesity crisis.
Approaches Rooted in Communities
Community based strategies for addressing obesity highlight the importance of initiatives and grassroots movements. Programs that concentrate on enhancing access to foods encouraging activity and educating community members about healthy eating have shown positive outcomes. For example community gardens and farmers markets can offer produce to residents living in areas with access to healthy food options promoting better dietary choices. Schools and community centers can also play a role by providing nutrition education and physical activity programs.
The Impact of Technology
Technology has increasingly become an asset in the battle against obesity. Mobile applications and wearable gadgets enable individuals to monitor their calorie intake and exercise levels offering feedback and motivating lifestyle choices.
Furthermore social networking sites can play a role, in advocating for public health initiatives and sharing details on diet and wellness. Although technology isn't a solution to the issue of obesity it provides avenues to involve people and groups in embracing healthier habits (Stephens & Allen 2013).
Future Directions and Recommendations
The approach to tackling obesity needs to be multi-faceted and should involve collaboration between government departments, health workers, local communities, as well as the food industry. In future, there is need for more efforts in creating an atmosphere that supports healthier selections particularly among the disadvantaged groups. This means that one should continue to campaign for policies aimed at reducing children’s exposure to unhealthy food advertisements, improving availability of healthy foods in deprived neighborhoods and encouraging manufacturers in the food sector to change their products into a healthier version.
Further still public health campaigns will try and focus on having balanced diets regularly done exercises. Schools and offices can succeed by developing well-structured meals alongside opportunities for exercising. More research is also needed to understand why some people are poor eaters or overweight than others.
Policy Proposals
To further combat the menace of overweight, policy makers should think about enacting a variety of evidence-based strategies. Some of them could be: Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Taxes on sugary drinks can decrease consumption and raise funds for public health projects. Zoning Regulations: By controlling the number of fast food restaurants in given areas, intake will subside and encourage establishment of grocery stores among other healthier alternatives.Menu Labeling Laws: This makes sure that restaurants indicate calorie counts as well as other nutritional information to assist customers in making informed choices. School Nutrition Standards: Schools meals and snacks in the course of learning ought to meet recommended nutrition levels so that students are eating healthy. Addressing Behavioral FactorsBehavioral interventions also play a significant role in dealing with obesity. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other psychological approaches aid individuals to develop better eating habits and deal with triggers involved in overeating. Programs addressing weight control which incorporate behavior change counseling together with diet and exercise components show promise towards helping individuals achieve successful long term weight loss.Long-Term Commitment and Sustainable Change
Society must collectively make a commitment that will last over a long period to reduce obesity rates. The approach should be ongoing and flexible enough to accommodate changing circumstances and new information. For this change to be lasting, there must be continuous investment in public health infrastructure, research, and education. Therefore, significant strides can be achieved in reducing obesity rates by nurturing a culture that appreciates wellness.
Cultural Shifts and Public Perception
In addressing the obesity epidemic another critical factor is shifting public opinion as well as cultural norms with regards to food and health. The acceptance of fast food and oversize portions as normative has been one of the major drivers towards unhealthy eating habits over the past few decades. This would involve public health campaigns focused on what constitutes healthy balanced meals and promoting on good home cooked fresh meal benefits instead. To change public perception cooking classes nutrition workshops media campaign advertising preparation advantages of healthy meals at home for instance.
Strengthening Health Care Interventions
Routine screenings, counseling and support for weight management by health care providers are crucial in handling obesity. Obesity prevention and treatment should be integrated into primary care to ensure consistency and comprehensiveness in people’s health. Personalized advice can be availed by the healthcare practitioners and also set realistic targets as well as referring patients to dietitians or structured weight loss programs.
Advancing Research and Use of Proven Practices
To better understand the intricate contributors to obesity and curate effective interventions, it is important to sustain research. Longitudinal studies that follow diet patterns, activity levels, and disease outcomes offer useful information on how to prevent or reduce obesity. By exploring behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that affect obesity, this will enable us to make interventions that are specific for different populations and situations as well.
Conclusion
The period between 2000 and 2010 registered a sharp increase of obesity rates that is closely linked to the spread of fast food outlets across America. This public health menace can only be fought with multidimensional approaches that will change public attitude, improve education, enhance corporate accountability and support inclusive research plus health care interventions. By creating an environment where good health is appreciated through provision of necessary resources and support, we can achieve significant milestones in curbing cases of obesity within our population as well as overall improvement in their welfare.

2024.05.17 20:06 Straight_Bathroom775 One-month keto?

Recently joined this sub because, after years of scoffing at keto (no carbs?!? no way!), I decided to try it out (following a 3-day water fast). I’ve been doing IF (6/18 M-F, free weekends) for a few months.
I’m not concerned about weight loss, as I’m a 5’8” (172cm) male who hovers between 150-160 lbs (68-73kg). Currently 151lbs (68.5kg).
The reason I decided to try keto is because even though I’ve never been obese, my LDLs and A1C are high, and I want to get my body back within a normal range without the need for medication. I’ve always had a fast metabolism, so I never really thought much about what I ate, but over the last few years my eating habits have started to catch up with me (plus my dad, who was very athletic in his youth, had hypertension, type 2 diabetes (managed with metformin), and high cholesterol). I’m currently taking metformin, atorvastatin, fenofibrate, and lisinopril (my dr thinks I have pre hypertension, but I’m pretty sure it was because of early morning workouts (including supplements) before my appointments 😬)- oh and levothyroxine due to high TSH.
I’ve decided to try keto for a month, to see if it has any noticeable effects on my bloodwork. Do y’all think one month is long enough to see any results? I want all the carbs sooo bad right now lol, and my wife is sad that she can’t share yummy desserts with me…
Haven’t figured out my macros yet, but I have been trying (successfully) to keep my carb count super low. Really need to figure out my macros and start paying more attention to my protein-fat ratio, so any good free sites/apps suggestions are also welcomed and much appreciated 🙏🏽

15kg Down - 9 Weeks In - Update
Hi All,
Just felt like posting an update on this milestone for me. This is probably the first time in 12-14 years that I have weighed this little.
Highest weight 135kg in COVID, Starting Weight (March) - 125kg , Current Weight (May) - 110kg, GW - 85kg
First two doses were from Superdrug (£210 approx), they asked for photo of body and photo standing on scales. Next dose was on Medexpress (£135 approx), I was worried about it being sent rather than pick up in person but it was delviered on time and still cool in its little thermo box.
First month was 2.5mg and then went up to 5mg, I have stayed on 5mg and the next will likely be 5mg too while progress stays the same with minimal side effects. I have concerns about supply availability, particuarly of the higher doses, just take a look at the US sub to see the problems they have. So I dont want to go up unless I need to.
Diet has been targeting 1500 / 1600 calories a day, making sure I include veg and protein. I had to start eating quite bland food anyway before this due to stomach complications, which I were told were likely caused by being obese putting pressure on my stomach so that was the real kick to get started. I had to stop fried food, caffiene and alchol anyway so I cant comment on how the drug makes you respond to those. The first warnings I got were eating things like a small, medium strength, indian curry. Body did not like that at all but was better with tandoori chicken, no sauce.
I have been making vegtable boxes for my lunch with low fat hommus dip and using some protein shakes now and then when I dont have time to make dinner, honestly I think the protein shakes (myprotein - so not meal replacement) have shown the best results when used.
Bad side effects have been largely minimal, particularly after 3 weeks on the 5mg, but I have been diligent in my diet at least. Extra important to stay hydrated too - I drink a 700ml water with electrolyte dissovable every day without fail. I do get some drowsiness on injection day still.
Good side effects, aside from appteite and food noise drastically reducing, is that I have way more energy now. Im not sure if its blood sugar or blood pressure now but it feels great, walking the dog just feels easier now. I also think it has reduced anxiety somehow, but im no doctor to tell you how.
My advice to people getting started:
  • Injections can be scary, this one was my first ever, but the leaflet tells you all you need to know and dont be afraid to vary injection spots (I would reccomend either stomach/thigh first). It gets easier, honest.
  • Over hydrate than what you expect/want to, add in electrolytes if you can - I got some dissolvables similar to berocca from amazon.
  • Plan your meals beforehand as if it works for you straight away you wont know when to eat, but if you dont eat anything you will still get serious nausea and fatigue as your body still needs food. This is a marathon not a sprint.
  • Shop around for prices / voucher codes.
  • Avoid compounding/dodgy sites (seriously you are injecting things into your body here)
Progress pics: (Ignore the diet calories in below screenshot, I dont how to change that)

2024.05.15 13:06 keerthiamyg Side effects of insulin during pregnancy

Introduction
When blood sugar levels cannot be controlled with oral medications alone, human insulin is used to treat type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the body does not produce insulin and cannot control blood sugar levels, or type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the body does not produce or use insulin normally, resulting in excessive blood sugar levels. Human insulin belongs to a group of drugs known as hormones. The insulin that the body naturally produces is replaced with human insulin. It functions by assisting the body's other tissues in transferring blood sugar, which is used there for energy. It also prevents the liver from generating additional sugar. This is how all of the available forms of insulin function. The only differences between the insulin kinds are in how soon they start to act and how long they stay effective at regulating blood sugar.
What is Gestational diabetes ?
For women without a history of diabetes, gestational diabetes is a form of the diabetes that can develop during pregnancy. After the baby is born, gestational diabetes typically disappears. If your doctor advises differently, it's crucial to get a follow-up glucose tolerance test six to twelve months after the baby is born or before attempting a second pregnancy to ensure you are no longer diabetic. You can increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and healthy baby by controlling your gestational diabetes.
Who is susceptible to gestational diabetes?
The prevalence of gestational diabetes in pregnant women ranges from 3% to 8%. In most cases, it is discovered between 24 and 28 weeks, though it might appear earlier. Receiving a gestational diabetes diagnosis might be distressing and unanticipated. It's critical to receive support and assistance in controlling it by reaching out.
Gestational diabetes is more likely to affect some women. Among the women in this category are these:
There are some pregnant women without established risk factors for gestational diabetes.
Education about the use of insulin
It is critical that you receive guidance and support on the administration, storage, and operation of insulin from your physician or diabetes educator.
It is crucial that you understand the warning signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia, how to manage it, and the safe blood glucose levels for driving. Insulin can occasionally cause blood glucose levels to drop too low.
What happens after the birth of a baby?
After your baby is born, you normally stop injecting insulin to help manage gestational diabetes. This is due to the fact that after giving delivery, women's blood glucose levels typically recover to the ideal range rather quickly.
It's crucial to check your baby's blood glucose levels after birth to make sure it hasn't dropped too low. If so, you can cure it by giving your child formula or breast milk. It is advised that you breastfeed your child because it is best for both of you.
After your baby is delivered, your blood glucose levels will be monitored for a few days to make sure they are within the appropriate range. It is customary to check blood sugar two hours after eating and before breakfast. Six to twelve weeks after the baby is born, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is performed to see if your diabetes has resolved.
If you live in a high-risk location or are unable to socially distance yourself from the pathology center, it is advised that you postpone the OGTT testing for a period of six months during COVID-19. If you intend to become pregnant again or before your child turns 12 months old, it is advised to have an OGTT. Follow your physician's advice.
Although a child whose mother had gestational diabetes won't have diabetes at birth, they might have a higher chance of type 2 diabetes in the future.
What side effects can insulin cause?
There may be adverse effects from human insulin. Inform your physician in the event that any of these symptoms worsen or persist:
Certain adverse effects may be dangerous. Give your doctor a call right away if you encounter any of the following symptoms:
Conclusion
Insulin therapy is still the recommended course of treatment for uncontrolled gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The insulins with the greatest human pregnancy data are NPH, insulin lispro, insulin aspart, and regular insulin. Clinicians' ability to accurately weigh the advantages and disadvantages of modifying insulin therapy will become increasingly important. It's also crucial to share the data with the patient so she can help choose the optimal insulin dosage. For the greatest fetal results, strict glycemic control must be maintained throughout pregnancy, regardless of the regimen selected.

2024.05.13 04:18 FistBump_ Herpes Diagnosis: What's Next? Your Essential Guide to Moving Forward

You've just tested positive for genital herpes and now find yourself in a state of shock. So, what do you do now? Well, first off, let me tell you that EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY! Initially, you'll likely experience denial and then go through a roller coaster of emotions before finally accepting your new companion for life.
It's okay to be sad at first, but staying sad for a long time is not good for your mental health. You are a strong person, and you're going to get through this, I promise.
The first outbreak is the worst, with subsequent ones becoming less severe over time. Honestly, you may even forget you have the virus eventually.
You may feel gross and unworthy of anyone's love, but honestly, the worst thing about herpes is the negative stigma. There is nothing wrong with you, and this virus does not define who you are.
Once you've recovered mentally, here's what you're going to start doing:
Supplements:
Start taking daily supplements (this is what I use)
* 1000 mg of Vitamin C
* 1000 mg of Lysine
* 30 mg of Zinc
* 1000 mg of salmon or fish oil (twice daily)
* Shilajit Resin (Half a pea-sized scoop)
*Disclaimer: This will not prevent outbreaks, but for me, it helps me stay healthy and heal quite quickly from outbreaks. Some of you may need to take antivirals, but they can make outbreaks go away even faster.
(33 M) I started taking vitamins only after I was diagnosed, and I feel amazing all the time. I also feel like I don't get sick as often as I used to.
Fitness: You are going to start hitting the gym, a minimum of 3-5 times a week. This will help reduce stress levels and maintain your mental health. Also, let's be honest, would you rather have herpes while being weak/skinny/obese or fit/toned/muscular?
Even with an outbreak, at least you look good naked right?! I'm sure you would all agree. So, get out there and start pumping those weights!
Dating: Moving forward in this aspect can be tough initially due to the lack of knowledge people have along with the stigma. However, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! There are plenty of dating sites specifically for people with our condition. Also, there are lots of people out there who don't care if you have it.
Fortunately for me, I found someone. I went on 2 dates with this girl and told her on our 3rd date. I took her to a nice restaurant, not expecting to see her again, so I wanted the last night to be special because I enjoyed getting to know her. She told me she didn't care, and it was worth still seeing me.
If it can happen to me, then it can definitely happen to you.
For Ladies: I'm going to be extremely blunt. I'm not trying to downplay your status, but it is a lot easier for women with herpes to date because most guys do not care. 8/10 men will still want to date you after you disclose your status. I have met plenty of women who have stated that having herpes has not changed their dating/sex life at all. They are just more careful about who they choose as a partner.
Women also use it to their advantage when dealing with creepy guys at the baclub. They simply say, "I have herpes," and they immediately leave you alone.
Your future boyfriend/husband is out there waiting for you. Go and find him!
For Men: Having this virus is a lot tougher for us, but do not let that discourage you from trying to start dating again. Like I said earlier, if I found someone who didn't care about my status, then you can too.
Once you start going out on dates, try the 3rd date rule. Disclose your status on the 3rd date because by then, you would have developed feelings for them but not enough to be heartbroken if they decide not to go through with it. The longer you wait, the more it will hurt emotionally.
Sex: You have to be careful not to pass it on to your partner.
Here's a tip for the fellas: if you're having an outbreak and your girlfriend/wife is in the mood, it is important that you do not have intercourse and focus on pleasuring her orally. After she is satisfied, wait 15-30 minutes before going down on her again. She will not be expecting it and make her go crazy for you. Your jaw is going to hurt but push through it. I promise she will make it up to you when your lesions and sores heal, and it's safe to have sex again.
Overall, herpes is extremely common. Most people don't even know they have it because they are asymptomatic. The person who makes fun of people with herpes most likely has it themselves and aren't aware.
Remember, you are not alone, and this doesn't define who you are.
Now get out there and live your best life!
If anyone else would like to comment about how to move forward please share your stories here so that we can help the newly diagnosed. Thanks everyone!

2024.05.12 16:15 PoisonedWhispers [Part 3] A critique of 4THOT’s two subreddit bans upon myself; and some remarks on Litmus tests.

The Short Version can be found here.

Part 1 here. Part 2 here.

The Beekeeper. Bzzt:

Ah, I'm so fucked. 💀

Challenges...

This part is going to be an interesting challenge. I would say I’m walking a tightrope here, but that metaphor implies that there’s some slim chance where one can write a section like this and not get banned, um, again (and again?). The original plan was something a bit more comprehensive, where alongside another matter, I would make the case that there have been a number of pro-Palestine users that have correctly addressed misinformation on this sub, where they do a decent job of breaking circlejerks, adding some sordid nuance to threads that otherwise would have devolved into the ones laid out in Part 1 and Part 2. These users will, inevitably, have an “interaction” with 4THOT at some point; they will subsequently be banned on justifications that I obviously believe are nonsensical, where said justifications are also exhibited by 4THOT, whether in that exchange itself or in other threads; and these users are not interested in returning to the sub.
I abandoned this plan for a long litany of reasons; there’s two in particular I’ll highlight here: (1) I don't believe I can achieve the effects I desire; and (2) I'm keen to avoid any accusations of this section being some “hit-piece” or “hate-post.”
I do not intend to present arguments against any other aspect of moderation that I might find to be problematic; I do not intend to make comments on character. I am simply razor-focused on one aspect of moderation here, and one aspect of the unbanning process.

...and Goals

This part will attempt to try and have my other goal — which is shared by many other users in this sub — come into fruition: I believe users should be able to participate in this sub without needing to take into consideration what 4THOT’s personal views are on a matter.
The only things a user should be cognizant of is what are Reddit's site wide rules, including those specific to this sub; what are the subreddit rules; and what are Destiny's desires in terms of what comments and submissions are allowed here. I also believe subreddit rule 6 (rule 5 on new reddit) needs to be amended to remove the arbitrariness.
If a user comes away with a different interpretation of events than 4THOT does, and said user doesn't exhibit any other behaviour in their comment or submission that violates those stated parameters, then that user ought not to be banned.
If 4THOT’s personal opinion is something that we need to be mindful of — and Destiny approves of this notion, agreeing that opinions 4THOT alone finds to be beyond the pale warrants an immediate ban — then, unironically, that stipulation should be added to the subreddit rules.
Furthermore, as mentioned in the TL;DR, I am requesting clarification on if there’s any procedure by which you can get unbanned when 4THOT sets a condition on the unban — and whether or not he should be setting conditions on the ban. 4THOT has mentioned that "Ninou has orders to not unban certain [regards.]"
As it stands, it’s not clear if Destiny approves of this behaviour. I say this because I have not seen him comment on this aspect of moderation when it comes to the subreddit. If he already disapproves of this behaviour, then I would request that this sentiment be conveyed to 4THOT, which should hopefully reduce the likelihood this reoccurs in the future.
I'm asking that Destiny clarify here because then it's something that can be clipped, and moderators here can use that clip when, well, moderating.
One final point before I critique the bans. There’s a noticeable difference between this section on 4THOT, and his um, passionate challenge to Kelly Jean: she’s easy to avoid. Just close the stream mate! Whereas 4THOT has control over who can participate in this subreddit, Kelly Jean can't dictate who can and can't appear on stream. Mashallah. 🙏 Thus, I feel this submission has justification.

The Bullet: A Forlorn Attempt for Consistency

The second ban is infinitely more interesting, but I’ll briefly address the first 30-day ban. I am not here to relitigate this discourse. The post in question that led to the infraction was removed, but it's still available if you’re a moderator, and I won't be reposting it here. The gist of the post was a question on whether or not we should be banning people for misinformation, referencing a user who received a 90-day ban from 4THOT for posting a misquote from a mainstream Israeli news outlet, during a live translation of a speech Netanyahu was giving. I’m pretty sure 4THOT knows who i24News are, so I couldn't quite follow his thought process here.
Moreover, if you’ve gone through the examples above, then you can easily imagine my bafflement here as well, particularly because a couple days earlier a Twitter clip was posted of an individual clearly misspeaking.
The user who submitted this post was only banned for 10 days — despite doubling down on this not being a misspeak — and I was bemused by the inconsistency being applied here. Being completely consistent in terms of my own principles, I mentioned in my post that I don’t think either of them should be banned, but if this is the standard that is going to be maintained, then it would only be reasonable that some level of leniency is given if you happen to inadvertently post misinformation from a reputable news outlet.
Regarding the Netanyahu misquote, I am in full agreement with 4THOT that it is a misquote, but it is regrettable that, well, some chose to challenge him on this front, arguing that the corrected quote is functionally the same, or worse. Take note of how civil his interlocutor here is up until the point 4THOT used an insult; unwisely, his interlocutor chose to match tone. I’m only mentioning this because, despite the insults 4THOT might use against me, I have no interest in engaging in a similar style of rhetoric as I don't find it to be conducive to a productive conversation, and I’m hoping I don't have to deal with a level of vitriol here that users are sometimes not allowed to match — not that I have any interest in doing so. There’s a couple tame jokes in this post, but hopefully I don’t get a response like this:
Thank fucking God that guy died because he'd absolutely kill himself by biting off his own tongue to choke on his own blood if he ever read the obese shithead redditors backseating one of the most extreme acts of political protest any human being can ever do.
HE INTENDED TO DIE NIGHTMARISHLY YOU IDIOT THAT WAS THE POINT
Frisco, you got cooked mate 😭.

A Guardian Angel?

Now, after I was banned, another user made a post about the ban upon myself, which generated a fair amount of interest, you fucking drama frogs. Here, I simply wish to make four remarks:
  • I'm sure you can see how different in tone, rhetoric, and substance OP’s post is compared to my original post (for those of you that remember reading it), and compared to this post. There are a number of insults that are frequently used against 4THOT which I don’t use as I’m looking for good-faith engagement from him. That being said, I appreciate the fact that OP wasn’t looking for a meaningful, productive exchange with 4THOT here, and thus they didn’t feel the need to temper their rhetoric.
  • In the pinned comment, 4THOT uses a fair amount of hyperbole. The original post was very benign, and didn’t come anywhere close to conveying a sentiment that “this Reddit is ruined” or “4THOT is literally the IDF.” I don’t see how you can come away with this reading considering how mild the post was.
  • Once more, I am not here to relitigate this, but I would have loved to address some of the criticism levelled against myself in the comments under OP’s post; I certainly wasn’t going to re-open those conversations a month later. That being said, I appreciate users like Wannabe_Sadboi for making the arguments that I, more or less, would have made had I had the opportunity to immediately respond. Just to quote one of their comments: “People shouldn’t be banned for being partisan, they should be banned only for breaking rules, and Splemndid didn’t break any rules.” But, apparently, there are rules being broken here, and it is not clear what these rules are, and whether or not Destiny approves of them.
  • If the original post was problematic because it was too indirect, then hopefully this post which is significantly more direct — but kept well under the threshold of something that could be constituted as a “hate-post” — should not be a problem.

Chilling Effect. Brrr 🥶

When I was hit with the 30 day ban, I sent a direct appeal hoping the length of the ban would at least be reduced, which didn't receive a response, and neither did sending an unban request via the unban request form. No biggie. At least with a temporary ban I know when to expect to be unbanned.
After the 30 day ban, I decided to give up doing two things: (1) making attempts to get other users unbanned when I felt the justifications were not cogent or fair; and (2) participating in I-P threads that 4THOT himself had already made comments within — in particular, those where he was actively arguing with other users on the subreddit. This is a bad chilling effect; even if I see a comment they have made where they’ve made a false claim, or I disagree with their analysis or moral claims, I’m choosing not to engage because I'd rather not go through yet another cycle of bans. I value shitposting in the subreddit more than having arguments with 4THOT.
Moreover, I’m also not interested in getting caught in the crossfire when, upon finishing his Reddit debate, he bans his interlocutor from the subreddit, and also those who have made similar comments to the one his interlocutor has espoused elsewhere in the thread. He does not always do this, and I would literally never make the claim that he just “ban everyone that disagrees with [him]”. I won’t call this hyperbole as I’m sure someone has levelled this incorrect accusation against him. 4THOT is capable — and has demonstrated on myriad occasions — of being able to have dispassionate disagreements. The issue is that I’m not interested in rolling the dice here with another ban.
Thus, I decided to avoid 4THOT entirely while participating in the sub as normal, making the usual shitposts. (Y’all are welcome for the template, btw. I went frame by frame, looking for the shot of Destiny at his most euphoric.) Alas, woe is me, I made a fatal error: I can’t avoid 4THOT if I choose to comment in a thread first. Browsing new, the bane of my existence, Hobbitfollower you dastardly devil.

The Nuke: A Muddled Statement and Different Interpretations

In the trenches of new, I came across a submission which posted this version of a Jerusalem Post article. If you've read The Six Points, then you can see what I'm attempting to do in my comment, that was apparently egregious enough to warrant banning me “until Israel/Palestine is over.” Before I go over this, I’m going to once again link the comment I made on this subreddit defending Israel from the accusation that they have been siding with ISIS for years.
Consistency
I apply the exact same methodology when dispelling conspiracy theories on Israel as I do for the UN official whose comments are the subject of the post. I’m digging up the relevant primary sources; I’m searching for archived versions of articles posted on inactive websites; I’m reading multiple articles from different Israeli outlets reporting on the same speech; and I’m reading the entire transcript of the nearly hour-long speech by the head of the Israeli Military Intelligence at the time, Herzi Halevi, just so I can make an informed comment here. At no point am I ever concerned that I could be banned for this comment. I can freely talk about anti-Israel propaganda, and I know no moderator is going to bat an eye at that.
I recently watched a Hasan video because dgg taught me the art of hate-watching, and now I hate-watch dgg while they hate-watch Hasan. Early on in the video, an article headline by the Intercept is shown: “Leaked Cables Show White House Opposes Palestinian Statehood.” Ken Klippenstein appears in the byline, which immediately sets off a red flag for me because I’ve found reporting by him in the past to be absolutely dreadful, including the time when he used to work for the Grayzone, where he gave Seymour Hersh a softball interview, and allowed him to spread risible conspiracy theories. The Intercept article shown in Hasan’s video doesn't provide the cables they are reporting on, but they are available on Ken’s substack. Without going on a tangent, unsurprisingly, the Intercept’s piece on these cables misrepresents them (IMO).
Similarly, when I had a discussion with a tankie on another subreddit on whether or not the 2010 Australian Labor Party leadership spill was “a US-backed coup”, I once again seeked out all the relevant and many Wikileaks cables, read them all, and made my own assessment.
Dolls
Enough examples! You get the idea! I have a consistent principle that I am applying here. Upon opening up the JP article OP submitted, I see Danielle Greyman-Kennard in the byline. This is a person who previously wrote an article claiming that a dead Palestinian baby was a doll (which is not the first or last time this has happened in general; Pallywood amirite?). When it was brought to her attention that this is a body going through rigor mortis, she doubled-down in a patronising tweet.
Eventually, someone at the JP realized the fuck-up, and the article was retracted. There are a number of journalists and writers for Israeli outlets that seek to publish or tweet out any information that casts pro-Palestine organisations or individuals in a bad light — and that’s fine. If you’re pro-Palestine, and you’re saying or doing some dumb shit, that’s on you, not the individual that wants to report on it. However, there are biases at play here, where one must be cognizant of how these biases can filter down into how information is presented.

Direct Appeal

The following is the direct appeal I sent when I was banned which will serve as a clarification on the comment:
What up, I initially disagreed with your assessment, but upon re-reading it, now I'm unsure what our disagreement is, and what you think I was trying to address in my comment. Hopefully, the following will serve as clarification.
When I opened up the submission, I read the headline, I read the article, I watched the clip contained within, and then I sought out any additional footage from the interview that was readily available. The safe assumption I make when it comes to article submissions on reddit is that folk are generally not going to read the article, and will likely only comment based on the headline. If the headline is poor, I might present information in the comments in order to ensure that the criticism is well-directed. The headline of the Jerusalem Post article is:
UN Special Rapporteur 'unaware' of rocket attacks on Israel
If you asked the average person what they thought this headline meant, they would think the UNSR thought there had been no rocket attacks launched against Israel ever or since the start of the war. As evidence that some came away with this conclusion, you can read [redacted link] here posted on [redacted subreddit] (emphasis mine):
This can't be real right? This is a fake article right? Or a satire piece? Because if they've lived their entire lives unaware of the rocket attacks, then they have no right having anything to do with the global politics or whatever it is the UN does. That's just insane.
In other words, this individual is in disbelief, and they're astonished that Reem Alsalem, the UNSR, is completely unaware of any rocket/missile attacks that have been fired against Israel ever. Here I hope we can acknowledge two things: (1) Alsalem does believe there have been missile attacks against Israel at various points in time; and (2) most pro-Hamas sycophants aren't going to deny these missile attacks have taken place -- they want these attacks to take place. Alternatively, they might seek to diminish the destructive capability of these attacks, or assert that it is Israel's fault these attacks are occurring. It's pretty rare to come across someone claiming they've never happened, period.
My comment was made to highlight that she was really caught up in the frequency of the attacks and how she was possibly misinterpreting the question. Reem Alsalem has a wide litany of dumb beliefs that you can criticize her on; in this case, I thought the criticism would be better directed for being unaware of the frequency of attacks. The JP itself does include a line that would have better served as a headline:
[UN Special Rapporteur] unaware of the frequent rocket attacks made by Hamas and Hezbollah against Israel.
As mentioned, I was trying to ensure that commenters didn't make comments like the one I linked. Re-reading my own comment, it could have been phrased better to make sure that those who read it understood my intentions.
Further comments
The rest of the direct appeal consisted of me clearing up any misconceptions that I might be pro-Hamas, providing various links of comments that demonstrate what my beliefs are. This my attempt to "pass the litmus test" as I don't believe I'm being engaged on the merits of my argument.
Once again, as I’ve hopefully established by now, we know there can be a widespread reluctance here to sometimes read past the headline and open the article, and even the article itself might not have sufficient context to truly parse what is being said. At the time, the only additional footage available from the interview was the five minute, heavily edited clip compilation available on the interviewer’s Twitter. It is just… irritating to watch. Partly because, as I said, I have to suffer through listening to Alsalem’s asinine beliefs, but also because it’s so chopped up that I can't quite tell what’s been cut out, what statements are directly following from which questions, and so on.
Other users also had interpretations of their own to give, taking note of the fact that there may be an edit after she says "but". I actually don’t think there was anything additional said, and it’s just awkwardly edited. However, unlike with Herzi Halevi’s speech, I and everyone else watching these clips are working with scraps here, and the segment that aired on Hazinor, Channel 13 is exactly the same. There is ambiguity here; an amorphous, nebulous, incoherent jumble of statements where one can make a range of interpretations — but one of those interpretations was not permissible on the subreddit. My own of course.
I’m still baffled as to what 4THOT’s contention here is. He comments:
!cleanse nvm you're an idiot. She says she has seen "attacks" but does not specify from where or whom or when. When he specifically asks if she's seen rocket attacks that have been reported from the north from Hezbollah and South from Hamas without "every single day" and is asked about rocket attacks from those areas says she hasn't seen it.
I presume the position he holds here is that Alsalem is being sly: when she says that she has seen attacks, she is actually referring to Israeli attacks, not Hamas or Hezbollah. For further clarity, I would have asked 4THOT:
  • Do you think Alsalem holds the position that Hamas or Hezbollah have never fired rockets against Israel?
  • If no, do you think Alsalem holds the position that Hamas or Hezbollah have never fired rockets against Israel since the initial barrage of rocket attacks on Oct. 7th?
In his first reply to my comment, he armed me and said I was his “strongest soldier.” 😳 Must have noticed these guns 💪😎. It seems like he originally agreed with me, and I don't know what impact, if any, this had on the ultimate decision.
I remember staring at this section of the unban request form thinking, "Err, I don't know." Like you all, when I've been banned by Destiny in the past, I know what to write here. He doesn't like snark; if you're being a condescending prick, get that ass banned. I have a general understanding of what sort of comments Destiny hates in this subreddit, and thus I know how to participate in the subreddit without being on the receiving end of a ban.
Taking the recommendation of another user, I cobbled together something for the unban form, and figured I'd just try again in a month. Alas, both the form and my last exchange with 4THOT was unsuccessful, and I would not have even attempted to send an unban request form to Ninou had I known that she had "orders to not unban" certain users. While I can understand that there may be certain users whose offenses are so egregious that a ban conditional on a lengthy period of time having been passed first is warranted, I don't believe I fall in this camp.
It's often stated by both Destiny and other moderators that the "process to get unbanned is pretty easy." Conditional bans tarnish the smoothness of this process, where good-faith unban requests are rejected due to the condition set, and I don't believe this should be the case.
If Destiny could offer further clarity here, that would be appreciated by both myself and others who have had this conditional ban placed upon them.

The Litmus Test:

Scroll up all the way to the top of Part 1, and what do you notice I've done in the preamble? I’m keen to avoid guilt by association; I believe Destiny just calls this being “webbed.” In the TL;DR I specifically mention the "pro-Israel crowd"; I know what this will invoke in the minds of people reading this, the associations people will draw to other people who have made criticism against the pro-Israel crowd. Thus, I feel the need to ensure that I dissociate myself from those people. That’s why you see the statement about Hasbara and brigading; it’s me raising a giant flag screeching, “Hey, I’m not like the others, this post is different!”
Let me give a couple examples here (suffer through some more examples…you must suffer…).
Example I - An Odd Title and an Audacious Inquiry
In this submission, OP posts a Twitter video with the submission title: “Reuters video shows militants armed with assault rifles atop aid convoy trucks and shooting at palstinians [sic] approaching the trucks.” Now, no one mentioned this in the comments, so to add some clarification here: this is not Reuters reporting, this is a clip from a Reuters live stream showing a view from a tent camp in Rafah. (Specific timestamp here.) Anyone watching this stream can clip whatever noteworthy event they see and add their own statements on what has transpired. As far as I can tell, that seems to be what the original clip here from N12 news has done, and it was also posted on their website, with no additional details.
This individual (henceforth called Doc) asked some fair questions. They made mistakes, of course, such as watching the clip on mute (you silly goose); but I would agree that “shooting at palstinians [sic]” invokes an image of, well, Palestinians being riddled with bullets, and instead we get what seems to be shots fired into the air. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask that the title reflect this distinction. What’s unfortunate here is that merely attempting to get an accurate summary is enough for OP to assume the worst about them, and thus we get the rebuke: “Keep dicksucking the terrorists stealing the aid.” I’ve seen Doc’s comments before, when they say they’re an “Israel stan”, they are. But for OP, they immediately engaged in “the web”, guilt by association, etc., and that was enough to result in this petty infighting. I thought leftists were the only ones that did that?
Example II - No Steelmans Allowed
In the second example, it’s me that’s on the receiving end of the purity test. Personally, as someone who is not a leftist (see what I’ve done there?), I do think a considerable number of y’all miss the mark when it comes to criticising leftists, and I attempt to steelman their positions as I find that to be more conducive for better discourse. Feel free to disagree with the steelman, the point is that merely providing that steelman is enough for OP to assume that these are my own positions — despite clearly stating multiple times that I’m not pro-Palestine, that I support Operation Prosperity Guardian, etc. Once again I bring up that I have defended Israel from silly conspiracy theories when they mentioned “your tribe”, as that’s my attempt to pass the litmus test, demonstrating my impartiality here.
Example III - ???
I'm not sure if 4THOT engaged in a similar type of purity testing both for the initial comment I was banned for, and also in my last exchange with them on another subreddit. The exchange was pretty bizarre: I asked if they checked Reddit DMs; they replied that they do, and “our agreement stands.” In their next reply, they mentioned that they confused me with another person, and said that, “Yes, once I/P is over I will let your people go.” That phrase “your people”, is quite similar to how the OP in the previous example said “your tribe” and “your side.” This seems to be the guilt by association I spoke on: I’m being lumped in with a group whose views generally don’t align with my own. That’s why part 1 begins with an introduction on myself. I need to pass the litmus test first before I can get good engagement — and it’s unfortunate that I feel compelled to do that.
Engage in good-faith
The conclusion here is a simple one: don't assume what positions your interlocutor holds merely because they're skeptical about that framing of certain stories, or because they attempt to provide a steelman for the opposing side.

Finito for Real

What I’m looking for here is clarity. UN officials will continue to say and do stupid things; that applies to pro-Palestine people, that applies to leftists. But every now and then, upon seeing one of these submissions, I might think, “Eh, this is pretty stupid, but I think it’s stupid for slightly different reasons to everyone else.” Can I express those opinions here? Must I add a preamble to every comment so that people don’t assume the worst? Do I need to be thinking, “Hmm, I wonder what 4THOT thinks about this story?”

Free me OOOO 🐟

Thanks to everyone that offered feedback. :)
Edit: o7
Responding via edits is silly. Standard hyperbolic response, as I mentioned below. But I gotta address two things just so y'all aware that I can offer a rebuttal if need be. 4THOT says:
Here's the full interview with the UN Rapporteur on Violence against Women claiming she isn't aware of the rocket attacks - https://www.linkedin.com/posts/bar-shemur-8b1bb23b_the-un-rapporteur-on-violence-against-women-activity-7171212859895459841-gq6B
I don't know why he's attempting to "find" the "full interview". The linkedin video he has given here is literally the exact same video I gave in my comment. Click the hyperlink saying "the lengthier clip." They're both posted by the interviewer, Bar Shem-Ur. I'm not sure if even read my original comment, If you scroll down this page (part 3), you can see I say "the segment that aired on Hazinor, Channel 13 is exactly the same." I searched for where the footage originally aired and found no additional material. 4THOT, mate, the "clip-chimp" is this 30s clip the Jerusalem Post originally posted. When I say "lengthier" clip, I am talking about the 5min segment that he had to "find" despite the fact that I already found it.
nvm this dipshit didn't find the actual interview, this is a cut from twitter
Once again, the video from Twitter I provided is the exact same video as the linkedin one. There is no entire, unedited full interview anywhere without the tiktok rapid cuts. There might be more footage out there, who knows, I've literally never claimed to have found the "full" interview. I called it a clip compilation because I don't know if more footage exits. A baffling response. Anyways, I'll leave the rest, this is not the way to have a back-and-forth.
Edit 2: Just to clarify what I was attempting to do in my comment, 4THOT still has not directly answered this question from part 3, the main post:
Do you think Alsalem holds the position that Hamas or Hezbollah have never fired rockets against Israel?
I honestly don't remember the last time I saw someone claim that Hamas has never fired rockets against Israel; this would be an astronomically fringe position. If you read the headline of the JP alone, and maybe even the article, you can still come away with the conclusion that Alsalem believes that Hamas has never fired rockets against Israel. I gave evidence of the fact that some people came away with this conclusion in the redacted comment:
Because if they've lived their entire lives unaware of the rocket attacks,
I don't believe that to be true; Alsalem has not lived her entire life unaware of the rocket attacks. We need more evidence to establish that then this interview.
Notice that I did quote 4THOT verbatim in this main post. Oddly, I need to provide a "direct link" to it, even though you can see it if you just scroll down the page? "Isn't that interesting?" He's quoted verbatim. I'm not sure what he thinks is "interesting" here.
The odd statements continue:
Here's the actual thread where you were banned.
I've literally linked the thread I was banned twice. A third time as well if you include the moment where I linked someone else's comment in that thread.
I never said the headline is "incorrect", these are the words I used in my direct appeal:
If the headline is poor, I might present information in the comments in order to ensure that the criticism is well-directed.
I believe that the headline could lead to a misinterpretation. I was later proven to be correct. I provided evidence of that misinterpretation in the direct appeal. I don't believe I have received engagement on this front. Alas, these edits reply are a bit silly. Finito once more.

2024.05.12 14:21 Famous-Slice1843 Current News Regarding Erythritol Safety

2024.05.09 16:36 Wrong-Line-9624 Did i absolutely fuck it up?

i have been doin that for about 2 year in total and i actually got mentally sick . It feels like i have some personality disorders or some shit cuz i hav made a habbit of talking to myself very often. To give an example , i will ask a question to myself in my mind without talking and then reply to that question via talking. Some of friends thinks that its weird cuz they havent seen anything like this and havent experienced it themselves.
Even while i am writing this , i am first talking it to myself aloud and then typing it while reading it to make sure there are no mistakes but even then i still make mistakes often becuz i eat up some letters, words or full on sentences in between
Essays have been my worst nightmare cuz i would cut entire sentences many times becuz the sentence acorrding to me didnt make sense with the topic , which eventually make the entire essay look bad becuz of many cuttings
In 10th i suffered a lot of bullying because in 9 th my parents said to focus on boards , i physically isolated myself to focus on boards which detoriated my physical health (Not my parents fault). i had no friends and got addicted to youtube and gaming.
Things were going fine until i sat in a future emotional roller coaster ........CLASS 11th
This time i went to coaching , made few but very good friends(3) in coaching they were the people who made feel like i had a purpose. They made me feel like what friendship is like and what brotherhood is like , i was truly happy for the first time in my past 2 years
But as one great philosopher once said happiness can never last forever. It all came to an end. They all left the coaching becuz of strong personal reasons we all headed to a small burger place for a final visit. But i left early becuz i knew i wouldnt be able to see them depart from me while i stand there , doing nothing but watch and hoping for some miracle to stop them. I gave up on that hope
It was the last time i ever saw them, ypu giys might say that i am overreacting, but i think the true meaning of friendship can only be know when you truly need it
I became depressed , sad and so lonely that i started watching twitch streams which lasted for average 4 hours(brain rot) Probably because of my coping mechanism. But this fucked up my neet 2024 , even though i took dummy school, it feels like a shame to me. My parents agreed on taking a drop. But it feels so shameful to me
Because of the complete isolation in class 10 and 11 , i started taking a lot of stress that i actually suffered from high bp ( due to obesity and stress)
This kind of long isolation made me so sick that i tried to kill myself twice (10th and 12th ). I still have the cut marks on my wrist they have gotten darker during healing and quite visible. All thanks to my mom , because i would think of her just moment before i would about to cut myself just so that i dont make a deep cut .
And here i am landed on another addiction site to keep me interacted

2024.05.09 13:13 Just_While2954 Week 5 losses – Finally overweight!!!

Week 5 losses – Finally overweight!!!
Week 5 of 2.5mg
SW:109.2kg/240.7lb CW:101kg/222lb GW: 82kg/181lb Sex: Female Height: 184cm
Losses: I lost 2.2kg/5lb this week. I’m actually gobsmacked. I was definitely expecting a loss, but wasn’t expecting another really solid week of loss like this! The loss this week has meant that I am no longer “obese” and my BMI now says I am “overweight”. I’ve moved into “the 15s” in stones, down from where I started, just into the 17s, and I’m way ahead of my goal to be in the “90s” of kilos by the end of May!
Side effects: Side effects this week haven’t been that bad although I’ve noticed more dizziness and nausea, nothing unmanageable. I had injected in my arm for the first time so think this might have caused a slight increase in side effects. I had some constipation and some looser stool, but nothing to write home about. Also, significantly less trapped wind than when I inject in my stomach! My dry skin / psoriasis has got worse since starting the MJ, but not awful, and I agree with many others on here that I’ve noticed an overall improvement in my anxiety and depression! I think I had one headache this week, nothing mad, less than last week.
Dosage: SO, I have decided to continue with 2.5mg for the rest of May. I have a pen of 5mg which I’ve decided to hold off using until June as my weightloss is going so well on the 2.5 dose. I injected in my arm last week for the first time, and appetite suppression was definitely more than it was in the fourth week of injecting into my stomach. This week I did the right arm, and the next two weeks I’ll do thigh. My assessment is that changing up the injection site did increase the efficacy of the drug! So definitely try it if you’re stalling and haven’t given it a go yet. You do need someone to inject your arms for you though! Luckily I have a very helpful Mother and Best Friend who are being super supportive (and I think get a slightly sadistic enjoyment out of stabbing me with needles…!).
So total loss… 8.2kg/18.2lb... Almost 20lb in 5 weeks! I’m so glad I’ve gone down this path, I’m feeling so excited, happy, and, finally, hopeful.
Sending you all love! x

I have posted a little bit on here but wanted to share my story about how I needed to stop taking Wegovy. I have taken the drug for five weeks, and every 4th(ish) day after injection had severe vomiting and diarrhea. My doctor wanted a CBC w/DIF and a metabolic panel. It turned out that my kidneys were suffering due to the medication. Or rather, they ARE suffering/ I just had it done two days ago. Doc recommends stopping meds and says I am likely someone who cannot take any GLP-1 medication.
For those armchair advice givers; I changed injection sites, drank so so much water, ate low fat/low carb, etc... I did all the things and took all the preventative medications to help with symptoms.
I had an interesting talk with my PCP and she and I both agree that there is a very large percentage of people who take these drugs and ignore all the GI stuff bec of how addicting the weight loss can be. Also, apparently there is now a concern with patients who develop eating disorders while on the drug bec of how addicting the weight loss can be. Good for you if you don't and you are proactive with your health. If your primary care is not checking your bloodwork, that can be a problem.
Having said all that, these class of drugs has really been a life changer for many many people, and I'm so glad they are finding a cure for their obesity. For some (like me) it isn't, and that is okay too.

2024.05.07 19:56 FromTheBloc Looking for sources on breeding, and question about different color types

Hi y'all, everything I find online is purely for scientific research or feeders. I'm looking to breed for personality/friendliness, with the culls being feeders.
Also, I'm about a month in to raising my first litter, and noticed my albino pups are much friendlier and outgoing than the other colors from the same litter. I've heard that yellows have an obesity problem, are their other traits related to color I need to know about?
Any sites/forums/books y'all can recommend?

2024.05.07 18:59 SchwarZuho Is it normal for a mother to make me feel guilty for resting on my days off?

I have been working since I was 18, including taking 2-3 jobs at once to financially support myself. Unfortunately, I only working part-time since my hours have been cut. During my spare time, I have been trying to cope with my manic depression and sobriety.
Recently, I have been doing the things I love; going outside to have a cigar in the morning with a cup of coffee, exercising to battle my obesity, and playing video games to relieve stress.
The job market is always stressful when applying for a new job and it usually takes months to get one. I'm applying for jobs, updating my resume, and physically approaching job sites that interest me.
In the meantime, I feel like self-care doesn't exist to my mother. She thinks all I do is sit outside smoke and play video games when in reality I can't do much but stay at home because whenever I go out, I spend money, and I need to save.
She makes me feel guilty when I know I shouldn't. After going to resource programs, practicing boxing, and putting myself out there as a painter, I didn't come home until 5:00 pm. I showed her a flyer of an event I was featured in as an artist. She had no response, just looked at me grumpily.
Lately, during my time, I try to relax and not get too overwhelmed with everything that's going on in my life. I think it is healthy to play video games and rest during my days off.
While I am in this waiting period of waiting for employers to respond to me, I do things that make sense to me happy and to cope with my mental health. But my mother sees it as just lying around and doing nothing.

2024.05.06 03:00 Unhappy-Standard6645 Not sure what to believe...my best friend is an injector at a medspa and told me something strange

First of all, I am on Zepbound, but only because 1) I have insurance coverage for obesity meds 2) I can find my dose right now. This hasn't always been the case.
My friend Samantha is an injector (she does botox, skinny shots, etc) at a small MedSpa here in Georgia that has a Nurse Practitioner on site. This is a place where you have to come in weekly for a weigh in + nutrition counseling (and tbh they try and upsell on b12/lipo shots and stuff too).
Anyhow, I asked when we were out having drinks how they make people come in instead of just giving them the vials and doing it at home (outside of obvious money reasons)- and if they don't RX it, how do they just have compounded tirz to inject?
Her answer surprised me- she said they buy vials from a place online that has lab reports etc, and then they add sterile water to the vials they get and inject. She told me the name of the company they get it from and I am familiar with them (doesn't matter how) and they are selling strictly for research use only.
So I am torn- is it possible compounding pharmacies are also buying their stuff from the same places? How many medspas do this? Is this actually safer? I have never seen 3rd party lab tests for compounded tirzepatide.
Anyways, maybe this is common knowledge?? Sure surprised me though!!
Have a great evening- and remember to take measurements!!!

2024.05.05 22:32 LeadingKoala6162 Is it just me?

So to keep this as short as possible, I(34)m have recently got back into dating after me and my ex broke up. I was diagnosed at the beginning of our relationship because she suggested that we both get tested. I was positive for HSV2 she was negative. Still we both did research, I went on antivirals and we used protection during sex and everything started off great, needless to say a year to half later, we broke up. She never used my diagnosis in any argument, or any type away against me or even used it as a reason for our relationship failing.
Fast-forward, here I am getting myself back into the dating world I know as a man disclosing and trying to date would be a challenge, not only for me to figure out how to disclose but acceptance as well but I ended up finding out about PS. My profile there is nothing to out of the ordinary I filled in the sections talking about myself, my experiences, and what I see in a partner so that no one would think my profile was fake. I am 6’ tall black male, clean, shaving clean haircut,(because my job requires you to be presentable) I’m overweight for my height according to my BMI but I’m not obese I’m no supermodel, but I like to think that I am a pretty decentlooking guy. Whenever I message someone, I am sure to make my private pictures public to them (I even have on a suit in two of them) and I type a respectable message just to let them know that I would like to get to know them. I would guess that 90-95% of the women have looked at my profile and left me on read.
My experience on this site gives me the impression that it a space where people are looking for acceptance because of this condition that we are all dealing with the shallow constructs of society has followed us there, and leaves me with almost 0 hope for a solid relationship in the future.
Idk maybe I’m doing something wrong.

2024.05.05 22:14 Coronabeerus47 I'm obese. Should I bulk or cut?

I'm obese. Should I bulk or cut?
I'm planning to go back hustling. I have a good background about exercising about 5 years ago. Apparently I was so depressed that the only comfort I had was food and now with a weight of 107kgs from 60kgs. I'm starting to lift again slowly, and was able to lift at least 111lbs on bench. I'm still stuck in the middle if should I bulk or cut?

The funkiness of the data starting week 16 is due to the shortages/rationing which makes me irrationally more angry at Eli Lilly. 🤣 10(c) means compounded.
Here is a version of the spreadsheet I created. Please follow the instructions on the first tab to save it to your own files.
