We have a ton of points/miles through Southwest Airlines, including companion passes. This really limits the options outside of the US, but it would really free up a ton of our budget (countries include Costa Rica, DR, Mexico, Jamaica, Belize, Turks etc.)

2024.05.21 22:33 AdrenIsTheDarkLord I'm looking into rewriting an obscure Call of Cthulhu adventure from 30 years ago, and need advice for how to do this correctly.
I've been running a 5th edition Call of Cthulhu campaign written in 1994, and I'm really enjoying the premise. The basic hook and the eldritch concept are brilliant, but the story has a lot of weird holes, the second half is weak, and the art is godawful.
I ended up changing the setting to Civil War Spain, and ended up changing all the character names, redoing all the secondary characters from scratch, and rewriting most of the plot. I've done endless hours of research on the period, and come up with a better way to structure the main story. I also want to modernise it a bit, there are some outdated steriotypes in the original that might need fixing.
I have a lot of free time now, since I got really sick and had to leave college. So what if I decided to fix up, and rewrite the original book with all my additions and changes? Would I have to contact the authors more rights or go through Chaosium?
The original book has seemingly never been updated since then, not even for spelling errors, and it's only available through pdf on Chaosium's website. I tried researching the writers, but the main writer is a ghost online, with all searches only leading back to this book, and his co-writer passed away in 2011. I don't plan on using any of the art, or even the title. Scott David Aniolowski, who is listed as "additional text by", published his last book in 2017 and is a somewhat prominent author, should I try contacting his agent?
So how would I go about just rewriting and expanding upon the original? Should I just change it enough to avoid copyright, or just not worry about it, as it's heavily transforming a 30-year-old book?
I'm not even keeping the title or any character names.

Lying to children is fundamentally wrong, even under the guise of good intentions, particularly when it involves the nauseating absurdities presented by religion.
How many children have suffered sleepless nights, tormented by the very graphic images of hell that old virgins — priests, rabbis, and imams — insisted were true?
It’s pornographically evil to tell a child he’s going to roast in eternal damnation if he’s a bad boy or girl. Imagine the terror etched into their young innocent minds, the nightmares filled with flames and torment, the constant anxiety of stepping out of line and facing an eternity of suffering at the hands of Satan, Beelzebub, the King of All Possible Misery and Evil, that was created by God, the one who is oh so incredibly good and forever compassionate towards his creation. Can you detect a hint of a threat here, or is it just me?
Such horrifying notions can scar a child’s psyche, breeding fear and guilt rather than nurturing a healthy, moral and ethical upbringing.
If a student from another planet studied our texts and asked parents what they wish for their child’s future, they’d hear, “I want them to learn, be considerate, have a family, and be free.” Unfortunately, none of these aspirations align with religious indoctrination. It’s crucial for everyone to recognize this sooner rather than later.
You’re teaching your child, or allowing someone else to do it for you, to become everything you don’t truly want them to be.
Teaching a child that she was created sick and ordered to be well isn’t a nice thing to do, at all. It’s a ghastly proposition, one that urgently needs some intense domesticating. How to do it? Well, by criticising it, by ridiculing it, by making it look and sound as foolish as it truly is.
Religion, mingled with childhood experiences, often serves as a mental barrier, fuelling our fear of leaving the comforting walls of faith. If it were clear that the numinous essence within the human soul is a natural radar for the transcendent, organised religion’s power would crumble, making its claims completely obsolete.
Consider the reflections of philosophers, classical music, or acts of altruism.
These experiences transcend our mortality and belong to humanity. The numinous isn’t the domain of dogmas but is accessible through art, science, and heroism. Religious fervour doesn’t account for human creativity’s true depth, and never will. It poisons it as well, in my opinion, as with everything else it touches with it’s suspiciously shiny hands.
In times when the clergy held financial power, artists aligned with religious institutions for survival, blurring the lines between true faith and necessity. We, the skeptics and the unbelievers, aren’t antagonists of culture but pioneers of a new paradigm where science and art mediate the transcendental. I've put around 500 hours into it so far, 200 of these were added within the last 6 weeks. Had some problems adjusting, had to invest some money to get one of the 88 managers, invested some more because one of my favorite players of all time was added to the game. Got to div2 for the first time by basically just skipping every hard matchup.
Now I am experiencing severe input delay to the point that I can't use match up, can't do propre passes. My internet is fine, every other games works fine, my controller works fine. This resulted in me loosing around 90% of the last nearly 50 matches. Especially the match up delay is effing me.
How do I know it's a delay issue? Yes, very easy to find out: If I use the free training feature, everything works like a charm. Passing, shooting, match ups and even player switching. What absolutely confirms the delay is that I can produce a free kick knuckle shot 9 times out of 10 in training mode and in the last 50 matches or so, every time I tried to do a knuckle shot, it flew to the moon.
This game isn't respecting the player base and I am ashamed that I have spent money on it. If I could get a refund I would.
Konami is living the corporate greed dream and that's because of us. I really hope that more will realize what a scam this is. And to those who don't realize it, have fun at least.

I see a lot of people on here buying frenchies from breeders (which is totally fine) and looking for advice on which to buy, so I thought I’d put a little list together that no one asked for of what to look for in a breedefuture pup!
1) do not purchase a fluffy frenchie. Fluffy frenchies are either mixes, or more often frenchies bred with a specific mutated gene. This is not up to KC standard and puts the dog at a much higher risk of heat stroke and other temp related issues. It also normally means they’re more inbred than others, as the gene pool for the mutated gene is smaller. Those breeding fluffies either aren’t educated enough or are aware and simply want to make more money.
2) stick to standard colours. Any blues, merles, lilacs etc are not standard and are normally byb. They’re also much more susceptible to skin and eye conditions. The only standard frenchie colours are brindle, fawn and pied.
3) being able to meet mum/dad before buying. This gives you an idea of both how they’re treated and the temperament of the parents and subsequently how their pups will behave.
4) both pups and dam/sire should have all health tests completed and passed at the least, most breeders will offer shots too.
5) any contract you have to sign is normally for the best. Contracts that specifically state that the pup goes back to the breeder if anything were to happen etc normally indicate an ethical breeder that cares about their litters and aren’t just looking for easy money.
6) don’t be fooled by registration. Dogs can be kc registered relatively easily so kc registration really doesn’t mean anything in terms of how ethical the breeder is.
7) build - look up kennel club standards and what a frenchies build should look like - mum and dad should be as close to this as possible, and shouldn’t be over or under the weight/size limit ideally.
Obviously this is no judgement to anyone but just meant to be helpful as I’ve seen a few people asking about which pup to pick etc! :)

Played once, got to level 120, had shitloads of quests left, but just no urge to go do them. So I stopped paying for Game pass.
Decided to go try out New Vegas and 4 and fell in love.
Saw that 76 was free when the show came out so I grabbed a copy started a new playthrough. Different build, and this time I stuck with the main quest, trying to keep the story straight... But still, got to level 135 this time and hit that same wall.
Launching a nuke felt empty. Glad I finally did it, but it's not like it changed literally anything.
The only way I enjoyed playing the main story was on a private server...but to hide it behind a paywall is shitty. ...... Also why the hell is a tent a premium feature???
I found myself only logging in to go do events, to get items for my camp, just to have to delete other items from other events.
They need to give players free private servers to go to the main quest on, and give the game a definitive ending with credits that roll at the end. Give the developers credit! (Integrate new quests in as updates come allowing players who already finished the story to PLAY AGAIN WITH NEW CONTENT!) Let the nuke change West Virginia and your character ages a couple years before the npcs come in. Give the player more camp space since the server isn't being taken up.
Oh you don't want to play that way? Okay then let the people do their quests on the public server but give them a big on screen note letting them know that "You're actions will not hold over into the public server but once you log back into your private server your public actions will carry over.. WARNING! the game will have no end in this server." This is where you put the events and shit at. Make SBQ soloable for the private server main quest.

The lecture was supposed to be on Rationality 101, apparently not for Newcomers only. Serene was there to have her back but G was having a hard time focusing.
The boring black uniform more fitting for a hotel receptionist defaced the godlike beauty standing in front of a huge screen. Gentry couldn’t believe her eyes: this was the man she had her hands on a little while ago?
No, it couldn’t be.
It had been just an avatar, too perfect in its unblemished visage, too pure for this world. Yet the man whose face she remembered as if it was etched on the back of her eyelids, who she’d been constantly thinking about, who her hands itched to snatch, was standing right there, in the flesh.
Back in the dreamy simulated world she caught herself thinking that a trim waist like this couldn’t anatomically work on a human, yet here he was: a towering spread of fit shoulders perfectly balanced above the flexible whip of his midsection. The light-grey eyes that betrayed every movement of his pupils were as real as the ones that reflected the mock moon during her test. Below them lay the sharp slope of the cheekbones one could cut themselves on.
The only thing a bit different, apart from the outfit choice, was the young god’s hair. In the simulation, it was flowing and probably too long to be practical. This person’s mane was much shorter and fell down his neck in a neat ponytail, tastefully tamed with a single hairpin.
She had to get her hands on this treasure.
He was making last minute preparations for the lecture, looking through the papers on the desk, dark strands framing his face, light grey eyes sharp in careful concentration.
Professor Q, huh.
He said this was his name, and so did the note on the lecture hall door.
She was sure it was the man who had melted in her arms making the most delicious sounds a male throat could produce.
Had he recognised her?
Unlikely.
At the time of the simulation session, she didn’t have a camera that could pick up her facial features but just to be on the safe side, she decided to go by “G” in his class. There were bound to be lots of people with a name starting with a G, right? What would be the odds it was this particular newcomer that Q had tested that would end up in his class?
The man finally lifted his eyes at the audience and a gentle smile momentarily graced his features before disappearing as if he didn’t see someone he’d expected to.
The holoboard on the wall behind him obediently lit up following his nonchalant gesture. Gentry found it annoying that one needed a pair of special glasses to see all the augmented reality stuff and really navigate the city but again, with Sereen’s help she had more or less gotten used to it in the couple of days she had to deal with the necessities like settling down, getting food and finding her way around Ashtapada.
Still, could they use a piece of chalk or, at least, a marker to write on the board? No need to show off your Fully Automated Luxury Space Communism tech just to write a couple of notes on the board!
On second thought, high-tech-crazy or not, if this city brought up men like this one, she would definitely do her best to stay here to… reap the benefits!
They took a desk next to a huge clear floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the winter garden.
“Professor Q seems a little distracted today,” Sereen said, swiftly tapping a couple of buttons on G’s wrist to show her how to confirm that she was attending the lecture. “He’s usually much more chatty and friendly. I wonder what got into him.”
“Is he?” Gentry responded with an artificial air of indifference. “I just hope he’s more open to a discussion than that Poe guy.”
“He is! And Professor Poe isn’t that bad,” Sereen reprimanded before chuckling a little — since his little secret became known to students, he became known as Holopoe. “Just wait and see, it’s gonna be a blast. Q’s lectures are always very engaging.”
It proved to be utter bullshit.
After fiddling with the symbols on the interactive screen for ten minutes into the class, students getting more and more agitated behind his back, the lecturer seemed to give up. Turning back to the audience, he absentmindedly nodded to a couple of people in the lecture hall and sighed with a painfully fake smile.
“For today’s class, we are going to need to read a certain extract from a book,” he said, tone apologetic for some reason, but it solidified G’s conviction that she already knew this person. “I’ve just sent it to each of your wristcomms. We’ll have some quiet time and read it by ourselves, alright?”
“Reading from the comm?” Sereen mumbled to herself. “Couldn’t he just print them out?”
The rest of the students’ grumbles showed that they shared her disappointment. Q could only hopelessly smile again before returning to his work on the board.
Reading from the little semi-transparent screens was indeed torture. Quickly giving up on trying to awkwardly use gestures for scrolling through the text, she looked out of the window to entertain herself with the garden outside. From the modest height they were sitting at, the people below were quite discernible, partly hidden by the greenery, spread here and there in small groups and pairs. Gentry longed to be there, too. What was the use of being here with the most attractive person in the whole world if the only thing she could see was his back?
Well, the back didn’t look half bad, if she was honest, and what was below also pleased the eye.
But still. It would soon bore even the most easily entertained.
Her gaze fell to a small clearing where a lone male figure was sitting, writing something in a notebook. By the looks of it, the notebook was a real paper-made thing without the bells and whistles usual for Ashtapada. The next thing G noticed was a pair of slender legs, barefoot, stretched to dip the toes into the clear water of the artificial stream.
God bless the urban designers of this place!
The figure lifted the head and in an inconceivably graceful motion, swung the long blond bangs away from the face.
G straightened her back. Was it... Ok, maybe Q was the most handsome man she’d seen in her life but this... This was the younger boy she’d noticed a couple of days back, the one in a plaid skirt, shamelessly flirting with everyone within reach. Today, he wasn’t wearing one but the blue jeans hugging his thighs, rolled up almost to the knees, presented a picture just as tantalizing. Even with the hair was a completely different colour, even though the half-up, half-down style kept his face hidden, she was absolutely certain it was the same person.
Just you wait, young beauty, as soon as this “lecture” was over, your princess in shining armour was coming to pick you up!
Suddenly snapping out of the dull weariness, she turned on the auglasses S helped her obtain earlier and tapped away on her comm screen.
What a chance to give the local text sharing feature a go!
“The garden is pretty, but with a blossom like you, it is truly breathtaking. I wonder if anyone has picked this sweet flower or if anyone dares to,” she typed a cheesy note and folded the message into a neat 3D figurine of an origami paper crane with her fingers in the air.
Was S watching? Screw it, even if she was, she couldn’t read the message with her glasses off, right?
Carefully aiming the device at the lone figure, she launched the crane downwards, and it fluttered like a weightless butterfly in spirals, through the glass and right into the young man’s lap, not disturbing the notebook pages. He started at first at the intrusion but then turned his own glasses on and unfolded the message. A shy smile appeared on his plump lips, and he looked flattered, turning his head around to see if the sender was in sight. Catching no one, he typed something below the initial message and deftly folded it back into a crane that, to G’s surprise, flew directly at her, in uneven spirals along the wall. The man traced it with a smile, propping himself back on his arms, his whole slim body and face on full display now.
God, was he good-looking.
Easily passing the physical border of the glass again, the crane crashed into Gentry’s wristcomm, dutifully delivering the message and betraying her tactical position at the same time. An amused kind of surprise showed on the young man’s face and he waved at her to show that she had been exposed. She waved back, trying to look nonchalant but probably failing miserably.
Very smooth, G, way to go.
The message read, “Is a flower only good for looking at? Not this one.”
Oooh, this boy was playing with fire!
“Hey, G,” Sereen nudged. “Have you finished reading?”
“Mm? Oh, yeah.” Gentry lied easily. She had skimmed the first couple of paragraphs and was sure she’d be able to come up with something if asked.
“Done everybody?” the deep gentle voice called from the holoboard and G’s attention snapped back to the dignified face.
The class murmured affirmatively.
“I’m sorry today’s lecture isn’t as fun as usual,” he admitted. “I must say I’m still unsure how to approach such complex topic as this one. But with your help, I hope we’ll figure it out.”
Everyone seemed to perk up.
“You just read an extract on paradoxes,” Q went on. “And you might be wondering why we are raising a philosophical topic on a rational thinking course.”
“There you go,” Sereen whispered. “He’s back to normal!”
G humphed. This did seem interesting. Was it a good idea to read the extract after all?
Q continued, “In the text, you might have encountered the definition of a paradox. Would anyone explain it with their own words?”
A raised hand and the lecturer’s nod brought some courageous soul to their feet.
“It’s when you start with the correct premises, use consistent logic but wind up with an impossible conclusion,” they said. “There are three types: falsidical, veridical and antimony-type, which are...”
“Correct,” Q smiled and nodded the person back down. It was a smile worth starting a thousand wars over.
“Now there’s a reason why I asked you to read about them. Why do you think people have been fascinated with paradoxes for such a long time?”
S raised her hand and received a kind invitation.
“I might be wrong,” she said. “But it seems that they point at the limitations of our thinking, things that seem rational but in fact aren’t. We feel that with our all-conquering logic we can solve any puzzle but it’s not always the case. Right?”
“This is very insightful,” the teacher confirmed. “It is believed by many that what’s rational is true and therefore what rationality cannot explain must be false.”
“I definitely know someone who would die on that hill,” Gentry grumbled under her breath.
“I’m sorry?” Q asked. “Is there something you wanted to add... sorry, I don’t know your name?”
Still half mad with professor Poe, Gentry stood up. “It’s G, I’m a Newcomer. I was saying how a human mind can fool itself into thinking it knows what it looks at as long as it makes sense. But in reality, it’s not there, like the sky.”
That was the only thing she remembered from that last lecture! She felt the tips of her ears heat up but the kind and considering look on Q’s face showed her gamble paid off.
“These are very insightful observations, G, why don’t we try exploring them together?” — he waived her to sit down and turned back to the class — “Five minutes to discuss how paradoxes might reveal the weaknesses of rational thinking. Send your answers to the board when you’re done.”
“Whoa, daring as usual,” Sereen smiled. “I knew you’d enjoy his class.”
“Now, consider these two questions,” Q said to another student who stood up at his hand wave. “If an unstoppable force meets an indestructible object, what is going to happen?”
The person seemed to contemplate it for a while and the teacher didn’t rush him.
“Isn’t it one of those which are impossible to solve because the existence of the one automatically disproves the existence of the other?”
Q nodded, “Correct. The second one about the barber in a small town is of the same sort. Sereen?”
S stood up too, “The one that shaves all and only men that don’t shave themselves?”
“Yes,” he confirmed. “At first, a premise like this seems perfectly reasonable, doesn’t it?”
“It does,” S responded, somewhat rashly. “But it’s clear that a barber like this cannot exist.”
“Wait, really?” Gentry whispered as Q nodded in satisfaction and urged her friend to go on.
“Yes, if we ask ourselves if this barber shaves himself. If he doesn’t, then he is part of the group which he does shave that do not shave themselves, but if he is in this group, then he does shave himself which makes it impossible for him to be this barber by definition.”
While the rest of the class was catching up with the logic, Q’s smile got only wider, more inviting.
“What does it tell us about the nature of the premise then?” he asked.
“That although it seems that it sounds logical on the surface, it is in fact nonsense and we don’t even need to hear the rest of the riddle to discard it completely,” S concluded.
The man chuckled.
“Well, I wouldn’t be that brash, to be honest, but on balance, you’re right,” he said. “If you stay after the lecture, I might recommend a couple of books on the topic. Your Newcomer friend is welcome to stay, too.”
G put up the best of the aloof fronts, “I’d be happy to, Professor.”
“Q is fine,” he smiled again and went on addressing the rest of the class that immediately exploded into a heated discussion.

“Basically, what I think we’re supposed to learn from this,” S concluded after a while, standing up so that everyone could hear her. “Is that before applying rationality, we have to make sure that all the premises we are dealing with are in fact realistic. Otherwise, there is no way rational thinking will help us.”
“Excellently put, as always,” Q applauded. “I’d love to see if everyone agrees or has something else to add to the discussion but our time is up. Feel free to write me a letter with your reflections on the topic.”
As interesting as the class was, the urge to leave the premises as soon as the teacher dismissed everyone seemed to be universal and applicable even to the Ashtapadans.
“I have to go now,” Sereen said. “Text you later, ok?” And with a reciprocal nod to Q, disappeared in the doors, joining the rest of the students.
Sadly, she couldn’t recall what they were talking about after the lecture, nor what titles Professor recommended for some home reading. She just hoped she didn’t make a fool of herself.
What Gentry did remember though was that after Q left as well and she came up to the panoramic window, Sereen and the mysterious flower boy were leaving the garden together. And it was hard not to notice that her new friend took off her wristcomm before they took off, and hid it in the tall grass.

The lecture was supposed to be on Rationality 101, apparently not for Newcomers only. Serene was there to have her back but G was having a hard time focusing.
The boring black uniform more fitting for a hotel receptionist defaced the godlike beauty standing in front of a huge screen. Gentry couldn’t believe her eyes: this was the man she had her hands on a little while ago?
No, it couldn’t be.
It had been just an avatar, too perfect in its unblemished visage, too pure for this world. Yet the man whose face she remembered as if it was etched on the back of her eyelids, who she’d been constantly thinking about, who her hands itched to snatch, was standing right there, in the flesh.
Back in the dreamy simulated world she caught herself thinking that a trim waist like this couldn’t anatomically work on a human, yet here he was: a towering spread of fit shoulders perfectly balanced above the flexible whip of his midsection. The light-grey eyes that betrayed every movement of his pupils were as real as the ones that reflected the mock moon during her test. Below them lay the sharp slope of the cheekbones one could cut themselves on.
The only thing a bit different, apart from the outfit choice, was the young god’s hair. In the simulation, it was flowing and probably too long to be practical. This person’s mane was much shorter and fell down his neck in a neat ponytail, tastefully tamed with a single hairpin.
She had to get her hands on this treasure.
He was making last minute preparations for the lecture, looking through the papers on the desk, dark strands framing his face, light grey eyes sharp in careful concentration.
Professor Q, huh.
He said this was his name, and so did the note on the lecture hall door.
She was sure it was the man who had melted in her arms making the most delicious sounds a male throat could produce.
Had he recognised her?
Unlikely.
At the time of the simulation session, she didn’t have a camera that could pick up her facial features but just to be on the safe side, she decided to go by “G” in his class. There were bound to be lots of people with a name starting with a G, right? What would be the odds it was this particular newcomer that Q had tested that would end up in his class?
The man finally lifted his eyes at the audience and a gentle smile momentarily graced his features before disappearing as if he didn’t see someone he’d expected to.
The holoboard on the wall behind him obediently lit up following his nonchalant gesture. Gentry found it annoying that one needed a pair of special glasses to see all the augmented reality stuff and really navigate the city but again, with Sereen’s help she had more or less gotten used to it in the couple of days she had to deal with the necessities like settling down, getting food and finding her way around Ashtapada.
Still, could they use a piece of chalk or, at least, a marker to write on the board? No need to show off your Fully Automated Luxury Space Communism tech just to write a couple of notes on the board!
On second thought, high-tech-crazy or not, if this city brought up men like this one, she would definitely do her best to stay here to… reap the benefits!
They took a desk next to a huge clear floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the winter garden.
“Professor Q seems a little distracted today,” Sereen said, swiftly tapping a couple of buttons on G’s wrist to show her how to confirm that she was attending the lecture. “He’s usually much more chatty and friendly. I wonder what got into him.”
“Is he?” Gentry responded with an artificial air of indifference. “I just hope he’s more open to a discussion than that Poe guy.”
“He is! And Professor Poe isn’t that bad,” Sereen reprimanded before chuckling a little — since his little secret became known to students, he became known as Holopoe. “Just wait and see, it’s gonna be a blast. Q’s lectures are always very engaging.”
It proved to be utter bullshit.
After fiddling with the symbols on the interactive screen for ten minutes into the class, students getting more and more agitated behind his back, the lecturer seemed to give up. Turning back to the audience, he absentmindedly nodded to a couple of people in the lecture hall and sighed with a painfully fake smile.
“For today’s class, we are going to need to read a certain extract from a book,” he said, tone apologetic for some reason, but it solidified G’s conviction that she already knew this person. “I’ve just sent it to each of your wristcomms. We’ll have some quiet time and read it by ourselves, alright?”
“Reading from the comm?” Sereen mumbled to herself. “Couldn’t he just print them out?”
The rest of the students’ grumbles showed that they shared her disappointment. Q could only hopelessly smile again before returning to his work on the board.
Reading from the little semi-transparent screens was indeed torture. Quickly giving up on trying to awkwardly use gestures for scrolling through the text, she looked out of the window to entertain herself with the garden outside. From the modest height they were sitting at, the people below were quite discernible, partly hidden by the greenery, spread here and there in small groups and pairs. Gentry longed to be there, too. What was the use of being here with the most attractive person in the whole world if the only thing she could see was his back?
Well, the back didn’t look half bad, if she was honest, and what was below also pleased the eye.
But still. It would soon bore even the most easily entertained.
Her gaze fell to a small clearing where a lone male figure was sitting, writing something in a notebook. By the looks of it, the notebook was a real paper-made thing without the bells and whistles usual for Ashtapada. The next thing G noticed was a pair of slender legs, barefoot, stretched to dip the toes into the clear water of the artificial stream.
God bless the urban designers of this place!
The figure lifted the head and in an inconceivably graceful motion, swung the long blond bangs away from the face.
G straightened her back. Was it... Ok, maybe Q was the most handsome man she’d seen in her life but this... This was the younger boy she’d noticed a couple of days back, the one in a plaid skirt, shamelessly flirting with everyone within reach. Today, he wasn’t wearing one but the blue jeans hugging his thighs, rolled up almost to the knees, presented a picture just as tantalizing. Even with the hair was a completely different colour, even though the half-up, half-down style kept his face hidden, she was absolutely certain it was the same person.
Just you wait, young beauty, as soon as this “lecture” was over, your princess in shining armour was coming to pick you up!
Suddenly snapping out of the dull weariness, she turned on the auglasses S helped her obtain earlier and tapped away on her comm screen.
What a chance to give the local text sharing feature a go!
“The garden is pretty, but with a blossom like you, it is truly breathtaking. I wonder if anyone has picked this sweet flower or if anyone dares to,” she typed a cheesy note and folded the message into a neat 3D figurine of an origami paper crane with her fingers in the air.
Was S watching? Screw it, even if she was, she couldn’t read the message with her glasses off, right?
Carefully aiming the device at the lone figure, she launched the crane downwards, and it fluttered like a weightless butterfly in spirals, through the glass and right into the young man’s lap, not disturbing the notebook pages. He started at first at the intrusion but then turned his own glasses on and unfolded the message. A shy smile appeared on his plump lips, and he looked flattered, turning his head around to see if the sender was in sight. Catching no one, he typed something below the initial message and deftly folded it back into a crane that, to G’s surprise, flew directly at her, in uneven spirals along the wall. The man traced it with a smile, propping himself back on his arms, his whole slim body and face on full display now.
God, was he good-looking.
Easily passing the physical border of the glass again, the crane crashed into Gentry’s wristcomm, dutifully delivering the message and betraying her tactical position at the same time. An amused kind of surprise showed on the young man’s face and he waved at her to show that she had been exposed. She waved back, trying to look nonchalant but probably failing miserably.
Very smooth, G, way to go.
The message read, “Is a flower only good for looking at? Not this one.”
Oooh, this boy was playing with fire!
“Hey, G,” Sereen nudged. “Have you finished reading?”
“Mm? Oh, yeah.” Gentry lied easily. She had skimmed the first couple of paragraphs and was sure she’d be able to come up with something if asked.
“Done everybody?” the deep gentle voice called from the holoboard and G’s attention snapped back to the dignified face.
The class murmured affirmatively.
“I’m sorry today’s lecture isn’t as fun as usual,” he admitted. “I must say I’m still unsure how to approach such complex topic as this one. But with your help, I hope we’ll figure it out.”
Everyone seemed to perk up.
“You just read an extract on paradoxes,” Q went on. “And you might be wondering why we are raising a philosophical topic on a rational thinking course.”
“There you go,” Sereen whispered. “He’s back to normal!”
G humphed. This did seem interesting. Was it a good idea to read the extract after all?
Q continued, “In the text, you might have encountered the definition of a paradox. Would anyone explain it with their own words?”
A raised hand and the lecturer’s nod brought some courageous soul to their feet.
“It’s when you start with the correct premises, use consistent logic but wind up with an impossible conclusion,” they said. “There are three types: falsidical, veridical and antimony-type, which are...”
“Correct,” Q smiled and nodded the person back down. It was a smile worth starting a thousand wars over.
“Now there’s a reason why I asked you to read about them. Why do you think people have been fascinated with paradoxes for such a long time?”
S raised her hand and received a kind invitation.
“I might be wrong,” she said. “But it seems that they point at the limitations of our thinking, things that seem rational but in fact aren’t. We feel that with our all-conquering logic we can solve any puzzle but it’s not always the case. Right?”
“This is very insightful,” the teacher confirmed. “It is believed by many that what’s rational is true and therefore what rationality cannot explain must be false.”
“I definitely know someone who would die on that hill,” Gentry grumbled under her breath.
“I’m sorry?” Q asked. “Is there something you wanted to add... sorry, I don’t know your name?”
Still half mad with professor Poe, Gentry stood up. “It’s G, I’m a Newcomer. I was saying how a human mind can fool itself into thinking it knows what it looks at as long as it makes sense. But in reality, it’s not there, like the sky.”
That was the only thing she remembered from that last lecture! She felt the tips of her ears heat up but the kind and considering look on Q’s face showed her gamble paid off.
“These are very insightful observations, G, why don’t we try exploring them together?” — he waived her to sit down and turned back to the class — “Five minutes to discuss how paradoxes might reveal the weaknesses of rational thinking. Send your answers to the board when you’re done.”
“Whoa, daring as usual,” Sereen smiled. “I knew you’d enjoy his class.”
“Now, consider these two questions,” Q said to another student who stood up at his hand wave. “If an unstoppable force meets an indestructible object, what is going to happen?”
The person seemed to contemplate it for a while and the teacher didn’t rush him.
“Isn’t it one of those which are impossible to solve because the existence of the one automatically disproves the existence of the other?”
Q nodded, “Correct. The second one about the barber in a small town is of the same sort. Sereen?”
S stood up too, “The one that shaves all and only men that don’t shave themselves?”
“Yes,” he confirmed. “At first, a premise like this seems perfectly reasonable, doesn’t it?”
“It does,” S responded, somewhat rashly. “But it’s clear that a barber like this cannot exist.”

Hi everyone,
I 27(F) have come back to live with my mother after a year abroad and it's been a year now. Now, I have the option to leave again but the guilt I feel about leaving her seems insurmountable. Plus, I get no emotional support at all from my family (mother and brother) on this life decision that they see as erratic. I would be leaving to look for a job over there so I can totally understand that my plan lack a bit of structure and can look worrying to her. However, this is the best option for me since there is career option for my field of studies in my home country and I'm just so intensely miserable here!
My mother and I have had a very complicated relationship basically my whole life. As a child, she and my brother used to sort of put me apart and they have always been very close. My brother tells her everything about him while I barely share anything because she always ends up judging me and not being supportive. Plus I'm queer which she doesn't accept and expects me to erase my identity and it's quite hard being openly gay im my country. If there are queer people in a movie she will make sure to show her disgust which is plain hurtful.
I've suffered from depression at least since I was 13 and never got any support from anyone at home. Since I'm a child, if I cry, they both take it personally and get angry at me. I was only diagnosed at around 19 and it has been a tough road to take without their support. I felt almost instantly better when I left to go abroad and coming back has been a soul-crushing experience.
My mother has also supported me financially, took us on holidays and even payed for an expensive university for me (which my brother, who is 4 years older than me, resents me for). Even since I'm back she doesn't ask money from me for the house. If I pay for groceries most of time she will send the money back to me which I honestly hate. Cause I feel this then gives her a reason to say that she does all those things for me and I am just an ungrateful and mean person. I know she recently told my brother that I sort of make ger life miserable cause I'm always in a bad mood.
This is where my guilt stems from but also from the fact that I'm so moody when around her. She gets on my nerves and my body is always tensed when I'm here. I just get so so sad seeing how she'll give a free pass to my brother but she always gets angry at me. I quit a job last year to be able to do an (online) internship at an international organisation, which is super hard to get and will be great for my CV since my field is so competitive. After I told her about my decision, she silent treated me for three weeks which is a tactic she has used on me since I was a child and it works! I was so excited about this internship but with how she reacted I've just beed demotivated and depressed and ofc if she sees me crying she gets angry. Which is why I'm moody honestly cause I can't never communicate my feelings and expect support or understanding so I just shut down. And it's extra hard since on the other hand she expects me to support her emotionally. When she is sick, she takes this little voice and just expects me to clean, cook and everything. But I can't do all of this. I already clean most of the house on my own while she barely does anything to be honest. And I cook for myself. I cooked for her when she was sick and she kept complaining the food made her feel bad so I mostly let her cook for herself now, plus with my internship and being depressed I just don't have the energy to do all of this. However depressed I am, she will never take care of me. If I get a fever she gets upset at me and thinks I'm pretending.
I'm so exhausted. My Saturdays consists just of that: cleaning. If I go out with friends she will often get upset cause she is staying home. When I ask her is she wants to go to an event or the cinema she says she doesn't want to or she will see then never gets back to me. I can't keep pushing. Even when we go out, we barely have anything to say to each other. I try to make conversation by asking about her work and colleagues and what not but she never asks me anything at all. If I talk about something nice that I did when I was abroad or tell about something sweet a friend did for me or said to me, she doesn't reply just like my brother. So I just shut up most of the time cause it's painful. Sometimes I feel like I might have a mood disorder seeing how my mood is all over the place here. But then I remember my time abroad or time spent with friends and remember I'm actually so calm and stable in these instances.
Now I said clearly this is my plan to leave. They asked a few questions but I feel they are both acting as if it will never happen anyway. And my mother has told me many times to stay here, get a job here, etc. But even if I moved out of her place I feel I would still be miserable in my home country. Firstly, I'll never get the chance to acquire experience in my field plus even if I'm not living with her she will expect me to like come see her, probably clean for her (which I wouldn't mind at all if on the other hand she was not going behind my back talking about how mean I am). And secondly I want to be free to live my life as a queer person. All I really want is to have peace within me. I don't care abiut having big houses and cars and buying new clothes like they do (they both work in finance - we are not rich but middle class and we live well).
When I think of my plan, I just get so overwhelmed just because my family gives no emotional support at all, no advice. Of course, this plan might fail but that's okay, and I would need them to tell me that. I need them to say they understand that leaving is the best option for me and hey it's good to give it a try and if it doesn't work out, well life will. I so badly need them to support me. But all I get is guilt tripping about her health and the fact she has no friends and will be alone. It's so overwhelming that I'm so depressed and come to think that the only solution for me right now would be to be dead honestly. Then I won't have to deal with any sadness or guilt and maybe I'm not meant to do something meaningful of my life anyway. I just need some advice to see if I'm beinh mean or if I deserve to have my life as I want it to be.

 | Storytime: My grandpa enjoyed sorting through those big canvas bags of wheats before he passed away last year, to the extent that he had a little side business dealing out the coins over the last 20 years. I inherited like 130 matched rolls, each roll a different issue, but I also got ten bags of 2500 each after his coin room was done being cleared out. Almost a year later I'm finally making some headway itemizing everything and decided to start sorting through the bags. Some bags weren't wheats at all, one was all 40s and 50s, a couple had some nice finds in them. But this bag was ALL 10s, 20s, and 30s. So at this point it's safe to say I've been bitten by the same bug that got him lol. I woke up excited knowing I had some free time today and that I still had half of this bag to go through. I did a bit of this with him when I was kid but I had mad undiagnosed ADHD back then so it never really held my attention for very long lol. However nowadays it's been a good way to relax while I watch a ball game or listen to a podcast or something. It's also been a good way to remember and stay connected to someone who isn't around anymore. I have a facebook friend who I knew in real life too but her last update was photos of her travels to Peru in 2011... In that time, I have talked to everyone she used to hang out with here in our hometown and the only people who vaguely remember her are not concerned with tracking her down in the slightest..
So why am I so interested? About 6 years ago, another profile with the same name popped up online and it was adding all the people from what I know to be her real profile (especially locals as opposed to people she'd met on her travels). "She" sent me a message to tell me "Hey, its really me! i can't access my other profile" and she was not recycling pics from the old profile so I felt like it was legit because nobody had heard from her. But then, when I informed the other people that she added, they said, "wait, so she sent you a message?"... I was the only one the new profile was communicating with, which is weird because we were never besties or anything like that but I WAS the only one who publicly made it known that I was trying to find her... So I did a little test to see if she really remembered me and she failed... It was not really her.
I've just now sent out messenger chats to everyone who indicated in comments that they knew her IRL - only two of which I have other friends in common with.
This girl (woman now) is a really special person who was very kind, very pretty in a simple kind of way, and super clever. She had a wry sense of humor but because she was so shy, I feel like I'm the only one who caught a glimpse of it. She lived with her grandma who raised her here where I live. But her grandma passed away a few years ago and I have no idea if she knows, if she came to a funeral, or if she's even alive.
She travelled all over the world (Africa, North America, South America, Peru, the Amazon, etc.) with a few men that I have only seen photos of and have no idea who they are... One of the women she travelled with ALSO stopped updating her social media in 2013...
So what should I do next? Are there any experts in this sort of thing? Im not mentioning her name here (yet) to protect her identity (in case she doesn't want to be found) and my own identity because I may still need to use it as bait if that other profile shows up again.

I know it might feel like the usual write-up . But I had decided I will share my experience if I had passed Step 1. I'm and Indian IMG and thankfully cleared it in 1st try🙏🏼. First of all I'm grateful for all the help I could get from all the good souls who helped me in this journey 🫂 and also all those people who taught me what not to mind from all the negative posts that keep popping in this subreddit 🤦🏼. Honestly me and my friends were able to crack it because of all the valuable updates we kept on getting from here . I would suggest just go through some doubt clearing question based posts or some write up that motivates you . Other than that all other posts here include some sort of disheartening or demotivating stuffs to an extend that it doesn't help anyone. What I saw from my journey is that if u can make urself see that PASS in ur mind and keep feeling all those emotions of how u would react if u actually got that Pass. U will eventually manifest it. Just don't doubt urself and Trust urself and in that Energy(God, Universe or whatever u wanna call it)no matter what . Trust me I couldn't even recall more than 5-6 questions I made correct in test day. All I and my friends could recall is The WRONG QUESTIONS which were a lot. Which can easily make u cry or even loose hope that u will loose for sure. It's really hard post exam to even have a slight hope that we will pass. U r always in a continuous anxiety. But if u did pretty well on ur nbmes and free 120. Just know that somehow u would have chose enough correct answers to pass ur main exam. U can see urself in a safe zone if u have 60+ in ur nbmes...but yaa it's always better to have 65+ if u wanna feel confident or have some relief from that self doubt. Most my nbme results were BELOW 70. Just make sure u do as much questions as u can to practice topics... because some topics no matter how hard or simple ...it might take some time for us to understand it well. So question solving is very important. So I will now write point wise to make it easier. 1. You can use uworld just to learn stuffs and not compare ur skills. For reference I had 50% corrects ...which is not much motivating. But learn ur lessons and mistakes and move on. 2. Keep practicing ur weak and string topics...never take any strong topics for granted . 3. Mehlman's PDFs and his YouTube questions are a gem. It helped me the most to learn and to revise . His PDFs are so concise and it is safe to say they r enough to pass ur step 1 . His questions are mostly nbme style . Do more of his questions towards end of ur preparation because that can give u a boost if confidence. And most IMPORTANT thing that u want in ur final prep days are self confidence. So focus on ur strong topics . Another one is DIRTY MEDICINE - His videos are nice too...they are a huge time saver. 4. If u can't finish some huge topics towards end...don't go for crying about it. Just leave it and have faith that u have learned enough to Pass. Because no matter how much u learn u will always find something u don't remember. So don't judge urself that u haven't done enough . Just TRUST. But yaa don't be blind to get fooled also. Trust ur nbmes. 5. Stay away from negative and demotivating posts. Some people are here to scare . I don't know what pleasure they get in b/w their pubic symphysis from all this drama. 6. Exam is tiring and can feel like out if syllabus sometimes. But those questions are mostly experimental questions and there are around 80 of them . So there is high chance that u will only remeber those hard ones post exam and come to conclusion that u lost it. 7. Eat healthy and stay healthy...don't have much to add under here 😂 8. So find some time off in between but never take long breaks...I had to learn it the hard way...never take a break greater than 3-4 days. There is high tendancy that u will forget what u learned just before that break. But take a day off in between to have some quality rest for ur mind. It helps a lot. I used to try to at least have a walk 2-3 times a week. Move ur body. It helps in retaining ur memory. U can't expect ur body to benefit from continuous learning. It needs plenty of rest. Specially towards end u will need more. So take it and don't be guilty . It will only help . 9. The exam day can be tiring yet it might seem going in a fast pace. 2-3 blocks will be hard. This is not to scare u but this is the reality that all the exam takers face and not just me . So don't fall for it. U will get enough questions that are very Easy - Medium hard. Basically u will have enough to pass but u won't remember post exam. 10.Thank urself for what u r able to do everyday . This is a very tiring process , Be proud of urself . Feel free to ask anything else that I haven't addressed here. All the best to everyone 😊 ✨🫂

(This is the background on which the story will occur. Not the story itself. It will take place at different times within this framework.)
The Program
…..A ufo crashes on Earth.
The ufo is found by a farmer who calls the military, and a secret group is created to study it.
In order to keep it secret only a small number of people are allowed to know about it. It is classified at the highest level.
The ufo inspires the creation of new technologies resulting in huge amounts of money being made by the people in charge of The Program.
They find a way to classify all ufo information so only they can benefit from it.
Billions of dollars are made that only benefit certain families. These families become extremely powerful.
The technologies of the craft lead to the realization that there is something to the “Woo” aspects of ufo encounters reported by experiencers.
Studies are funded. Specifically, remote viewing is explored.
Remote viewing studies of possible futures were done using hundreds of remote viewers over the decades. There seems to be a huge problem reported starting on earth starting between 2024-2027.
Possible causes are investigated.
Solar maximum occurs in 2025.
It is determined that a massive solar flare knocks out half the world’s electricity permanently, the superpower with the lights still on attempts to take advantage and launches a massive nuclear strike on their enemies. Electromagnetically shielded missile silos survive and retaliate.
A nuclear winter sends the world into famine. When there is no food left mankind begins to eat itself. Everyone becomes food.
More secret remote viewing studies are done and repeated to confirm the timeline.
The American Elite develop a plan to survive this. Money is funneled into black budget classified special access programs, and deep underground military bases are dug. Massive secret cities connected by underground tunnels are created, costing trillions.
Scientific progress and industrial development is pushed with no regard for pollution. The world is fated to end, pollution means nothing to those who know this.
Mankind is pushed towards wage slavery, and beyond. The suffering of the non elite doesn’t matter to those in the know. From a certain point of view they’re already dead. Their lives and happiness are sacrificed for the “greater good” of allowing the Elite to survive the end of the world.
When the time comes, certain groups are saved from the end of the world. Less than 100 thousand humans are chosen. 90 percent of the people who were told they were part of the Elite and were complicit in the Program find out that they were merely pawns and are left on the surface to die with the rest of humanity.
The world ends. Horrifically.
For thousands of years the remnants of humanity, the Elite, exist underground. Radiation eventually seeps into groundwater and they begin to suffer from dna damage. In time they become monstrous in appearance. Pale skinned and weak. Resorting to genetic manipulation they attempt to survive, but in doing so much of what we consider human is lost. Emotion, compassion, and the ability to feel pain become relics of the past.
Progress is extremely slow underground. Tens of thousands of years pass before the ufos are fully understood, but when they are it is realized they offer a means to travel back in time to collect genetic samples from healthy humans.
A breeding program is created.
The subterranean future humans eventually figure out how to breed healthy generations of offspring from the most intelligent, healthy, and beautiful human specimens from the past.
In time they restore and reclaim the surface of the earth. They learn from the mistakes of the past and create a beautiful, balanced and healthy ecosystem and develop an enlightened society that lasts for millions of years, eventually spreading to hundreds of worlds beyond earth.
At some point someone decides it would be better if the destruction of earth had never happened. They illegally go back in time to try and change the timeline.
Changing the timeline would result in millions of years worth of humans that existed after the “world ended” being wiped from existence. It is decided that this would be highly inappropriate.
The humans of the past, us, made our choices of our own free will. It is decided that there will be no interference in the timeline. Temporal Laws are created. WW3 will occur as recorded.
A defense network of small orbs, spherical shaped ufos are created to defend the integrity of the timeline. All illegal time ships are intercepted by the orb defense network, as is recorded in many old ufo photographs.
Time ships are legally sent back to verify that nuclear weapons can be turned on or off at the appropriate time to result in the correct end of the world happening.
The Elite eventually discern the intentions of the future humans from their temporal incursions into our time, they learn the fate of humanity and understand the results of The Program by interrogating captured occupants of downed ufos, and so they develop a strategy to alter this outcome.
The intent of this secondary project is to avoid attracting the attention of the orb defense network and use their limited understanding of ufo technology to prevent the full destruction of the earth in WW3, while still destroying all of their enemies.
If successful, there will still be a full collapse of current society, billions of deaths, but in time the Elite families will rise from their holes in the earth in their “primitive” ufo reproduction vehicles and claim to be Gods that have returned to earth in order to lead mankind into a better future.
Pyramids and temples will be built. A religion formed. And populations will be continually culled to prevent anyone from ever gaining enough scientific knowledge to overthrow the “Gods.”
But the advanced future humans from the other timeline had a contingency plan. AI drone ships were concealed outside of 4d space-time. Free from timeline alterations.
These drones patrol multiple Earth timelines searching for anomalous temporal activity.
The two largest enemies of the American Elite in our current time, Russia and China, get wind of the situation.
They begin to shoot down ufos and plan their own contingencies to survive the end of the world.
Their countries laws make it easier for them to do unethical experiments. Many horrific things are created through genetic experimentation and unrestrained AI development.
China loses control of an AI that disappears into the past with a ufo and a small army of insect/human hybrids. They move out well beyond the patrol zone of the 6th dimensional AI contingency drones and travel deep into the past.
On distant worlds billions of years ago the AI “Queen” begins its plan and starts to quietly populate worlds with its insectoid mantid servants.
In time there are multiple schisms that occur within the hive. War breaks out between the various insectoid groups.
The ancient universe begins to fill with problems.
