2024.05.21 18:05 Brilliant_Shine2247 My Response to the Guy Telling You About Them Homeless Folks

This is for the guy trying to say not to give money to homeless people flying a sign. This my personal experience from being homeless in Wilmington. I can't say as I speak for everyone, just my experience.
I'm still homeless, but I've moved out of Wilmington. I had to teach myself how to read and write all over again, and this is what I do now. I hope you enjoy.

Six-thirty am, I woke up to my alarm. I had to be at work at nine, and I didn't want to be frazzled from being in panic mode on my first day, hurried, and hassled. No, sir. You don't get too many chances to make a first impression.

Rolled out of my sleeping bag with a smooth, well practiced motion, unzipped the flap, and made my way out into brisk spring morning air, taking a brief pause, taking in the natural beuaty of the forest. If it hadn't been for the sounds of the highway a few hundred yards away, this scene could have been from a camping trip or hike that I remembered from days gone by. I didn't pause to think about too long due to the urgency to find a suitable tree to relieve myself. Fifty feet, at least. Fifty feet. Otherwise, that smell could come back to haunt you. This wasn't a camping trip but rather where I lived. My homestead, abode, residence, shelter, and as far as I could tell, it would be for a long time to come.

I decided to drink my energy drink, which had come to replace my morning cup of brew, outside this fine morn, so I made my way back to the tent and pulled my Monster can and my half full box of handrolled cigarettes from their hiding places, turned around and walked the fifteen feet to my "visiting bench". Aptly named because that's where we all sat when someone came visiting, which wasn't very often, a few feet in front was the small firepit. A hundred or so yards beyond, down a respectable hill, sat Frankies tent, another fifty yards at the split in the trail was Chris's small pup tent, where a small pile of trash meant that Chris and I needed to talk. This was my site, and I had few rules, and trash was something I didn't want to see.

According to the rules out here, our social contract, the first person at a campsite was in charge and I had spent the last month of winter all alone here to earn the right to call the shots. After all, it was deemed The Allen Compound for the Criminally Insane by my friend who led a real boots on the ground street outreach in town, someone that I had insane respect for and not a small bit of love. We weren't. I won't speak to insane.

I took a seat on the bench, popped the top on the Monster, lit up a smoke, and took a big long pull of the drink. Spring was starting to show now, and the highway was slowly starting to hide behind the new growth of forest. My tent was already invisible from the road thanks to a large camouflaged tarp that I had strung to block the view once I recovered from the panic attack following the discovery of how visible it once was. That discovery came not long after I set up camp, as I was returning from town. Walking down the shoulder of the highway, I just happened to look up in the direction of my camp and saw that my tent sat in the middle of a big clearing of branches, making a perfect frame for my work of art. The realization that thousands of people could have seen that on a daily basis. I was live bait for any psychotic person or persons to visit on a full moon. Recalling the stories of people setting sleeping people on fire for the fun of watching a human cook, I instantly turned on my heels and headed back into town, a spy who just realized he'd been compromised. I didn't return until I had a tarp, but even then, it was some time before sleep came easy.

Seven am and the spring sun were now spreading its rays of love to its children in the forest undergrowth, letting everything know it was day shift now in the kingdom. Down below, I spied Frankie, who piled out of his tent and sprinted to a tree like his bladder had caught fire. At the sight of this, I barked three times in greeting. He threw his head back and made a rooster crow, knowing it would wake Chris up long enough to feel the urgency. And by the time I stood up finish the last bit of my morning nectar, sure enough, scrambled out of his tent and instantly let it go right beside where his head would lay when he slept. I shook my head and trudged to my place to change clothes. A light blue polo type short sleeve tucked neatly into my cleanest pair of jeans, then a long sleeve light flannel over that as a precaution, because a lesson learned early is that you dressed for all day. There was no going home to get a coat when the temps plummeted, so it was wise to have that coat ready at all times. I changed my socks, put on my shoes and out of the flap I went. I closed it up and placed a pine needle inside the zipper that would let me know when I got back if anyone had violated my space.

Seven ten am, and I was on my way. I had fourty minutes to be at the bus stop a little over a mile from the camp and I didn't want to be late, so off I went down the trail, just past Frankies tent I took a left, pausing just long enough to notice that Chris had gone back to bed and left his flap door open, then another fifty yard and over the fence to what I referred to as the 'exposed zone'. There, I was out of the woods walking down a small trail hidden only from the waist down by overgrown weeds and grass. The exposed zone went about a hundred and fifty yards to the shoulder of the highway, where I would merge left, facing the oncoming traffic. At that point, it wouldn't be so obvious to passing cars that I had just emerged from the woods, and the exact spot would no doubt be a mystery. There, my pace stepped up to an average of four miles an hour, something that I had clocked many times, and these days, it was a knowledge that came in handy. I could deal with being homeless, but not tardy. Every minute I walked along the shoulder of the highway, I was fraught with danger, at least in my overactive brain. I could envision cars swerving to miss the car ahead and turning me into a hood ornament, or blowing a tire and taking me out when the driver loses control for that half a second. Maybe something would fall out of the many dump trucks that passed frequently at seventy miles an hour and cleanly decapitate me before I even saw it coming. Why not? It's not like I was having a good luck streak, let's be honest.

Seven fifty am and I managed to make it to the bus stop with all my organs just where they should be and my head still attached to my body. I lit up a smoke and fished three quarters out of my pocket, ready to pay my way and go to work. The bus pulled up on time, and I climbed aboard, nodding to the driver in solidarity, one working man to the other, dropped my coins of passage into the box, turned and found an empty seat by the window. I watched as the scenery went from historical homes with their gates and carefully tended lawns to the brown crabgrass and dirt yards where the children played in poverty, then to the blocks of businesses where hopes and dreams were born and died, with their big banners proclaiming another last chance at big savings, or let you know that for the twentieth time this furniture store was going out of business and these prices wouldn't last. Nothing but a higher class of a carnival barker. Free financing, limited time only, no interest for ninety days, credit same as cash, act now, last chance to save, overstocked and marked down, employee pricing, never before savings, trade ins welcome, don't miss out, and my all time favorite, below wholesale. Imagine that a business surviving by losing money. The saddest part of it all is that these tactics worked on people. For the second time that morning, I shook my head.

Eight thirty eight am and the doors open at my destination, my job site, half the bus stood up to depart. Standing up and slipping No. 7 onto my shoulders, I let the line shuffle past me with the knowledge that I had time to spare

Eight forty, I stepped off the bus, gravitating to have a smoke with a small group of like-minded people who nodded their approval as I approached. The signal that I was accepted in the circle of debauchery. I made it clear, though, that I had no time to make small talk because I had to go to work and I was a responsible person. On time, it was late, and ten minutes early was on time. That was my motto, starting now, at least. Eight fourty five am I started to the job site, feeling the anxiety butterflies come to life in the pit of my stomach. I had never done this sort of work before, and I hoped I would catch on quick.

Eight fifty am, and I was standing beside the exit lane of the Walmart Superstore on a patch of grass where the stopsign was planted, dropping No. 7 to the earth. I bent over and unzipped the section that contained the piece of cardboard. As I put my fingers on it, I felt emotions pour over me, a mixture of shame, embarrassment, and determination. This was my third try at this, but I was determined not to chicken out this time, so, choking everything back down I pulled the sign from my bag and turned to face the cars coming up to the stop sign so I could show them the story of my life, condensed down to some scribbles from a Sharpie which read, 'Traumatic Brain Injury' in large lettering, with a smaller, 'Please Help' below. I'd never felt so alone as I did in that spot light that day at Walmart, that my life had led me to this point, here with a sign begging for money from strangers to get things I needed. It seemed like I couldn't even breathe with my phone service cut off, as I still felt sure that my son would call me at any minute to see how I was, and knowing that life line was severed was unbearable.

A grey van with a logo pulled up to the stop sign and I heard one of the doors open, then close, so I turned around to see someone jogging up to me, holding out his hand with a twenty dollar bill pinched in his fingers, "Here you go, brother. Take care of yourself, my man, "then back to the van and was gone.

I broke. Just like that. I broke.

2024.05.21 16:52 SurrealSoulSara Old video of verbal abuse & reading my 10 years old diary made me see my youth in in emotional neglect.

TW: childhood neglect and verbal abuse - me remembering so many things after last night's session. I just need to tell someone! I repressed this childhood since I moved out of my parents. It's like I died that day and moved on like a robot.
It is as though the illusion I've kept up for the past 24 years of me being always 'happy' and living a happy childhood just shattered entirely.
I have this diary I wrote in a lot in 2014, which is from exactly 10 years ago when I was 14. I cherished it a lot and sometimes would look into it to remember the old days. However, just last week I looked into it again after several months of being more focussed on my mental health (and especially on my childhood & parents.). This time, I saw something entirely different in this cute colorful happy diary.
All I see now, is how I was suffering. Suffering alone and always walking on eggshells. Nothing was ever good enough. Almost every page I refer to 'future me', the one who will understand me. I didn't get that from my parents. Old me, who will listen to how I am feeling and give me the comfort and soothing I so desperately needed.
I write about how I was completely exhausted from highschool, and then constantly bash myself with extremly self critical words. I have pictures of me in there with apologies for being ugly, and stories of 'how I didn't work hard enough'. Several pages describe forms of catastrophizing over the smallest mundane things.
In some pages, I casually mention a family member I dearly loved dying but then downplay it with something else. It's ups and downs by the sentence "It was my birthday yesterday, I had a great time! I am exhausted and drained and school is horrible. I did get a nice gift. I hope grandma stays alive" etc.
All this time I was happily keeping up this story of how happy I was. How I had such loving parents who where always there for me. They would shower me with gifts they could barely afford.
In my house, there were no rules. There was no bedtime. There was no structure - no breakfast together or chores I had to do. Everyone was jealous of me, because I was so free, but child and teenage me were constantly longing for someone to care.
I would be gone from home as much as I could. The atmosphere was so hectic. One day you'd come home to a happy loving mom who has all the patience and curiousity to hear about my day and my struggles. The other I would walk in and get scolded about how I was nothing. One day she was willing to help me with my feelings and emotions, but in other days she'd scold me for having them! I should be strong because according to mom, she's cyinic, and the world is 'angry and cruel. The world is unfair.' Now get up and don't wallow in your sadness and self-pity.
It's like they would give a gift sometimes, just to then call me ungrateful every day after. According to them I was unthankful, selfish, and my mom said I'd act as if the world revolved only around me. If I'd say "huh, I never said that?! I would never say such a thing?" she said "that is just what you think you are doing. But in reality, you're ruining it for everyone".
Eitherway, after going through the entire diary without skipping a page, I remembered I once made a video of my mom attacking me. I looked it up, and for the first time in 8 years I had the mental energy to watch it. My jaw dropped to the floor. I never even saw someone act so horrible before but it's me going through it....
t's like my world shattered. My mom was treating me absollutely horribly in this video. I don't even remember! You can see her face, and she is so scary! Here eyes look like pure hurt, as if she was throwing her own traumatic upbringing onto me and blaming me for it. She looks at me as if she's completely disgusted by me! The entire rant of hers is a complete mind trip where she downplays everything I say and spins it around as if I was just a burden who tried to make life for my parents worse.
I would never help with chores. Because, if I asked if she needed help, she didn't. I didn't have to do anything in the house but also did not know how to do anything. Then on other days she'd get angry I wasn't doing enough in the house and mention how our life should be about "giving and taking" and I should participate in that.
Now having read all of this, and watching some more video's of these attacks, I remember many things. How my parents would lock me up in the dark cold hallway because I had a "tantrum". They say it 'wasn't that long' but overstimulated and panicked todler me would bawl her eyes out. I felt so abandoned. In my life, alltogether, my strongest feeling is guilt. I feel guilty for everything. I feel shame. I feel ugly when I cry.
I only managed to teach myself how to release emotions in january this year. I never knew. I couldn't cry since years. When I finally managed this year, I'd notice I'd feel so ugly. My cries sound like my mom crying. She'd cry in our house regularly at some point. Really messy, really loud.
Because of constantly being told I wasn't doing enough, or that I didn't care, I wanted to please. I would muster up the courage and shun myself for how difficult and bad it felt to do so. I would ask her "mom, are you okay? Do you need a hug?"
She'd turn around on her desk chair and YELL. Loud. Screaming at me to get out of her face. Just get out of our life. This happened several times. I'd just walk away from the house. I felt so alone and unwanted. I never could do it right. My dad would just avoid my gaze.
Some days I would be begging my mom for a hug. Just for some attention. But she was so overstimulated that she couldn't even give me a touch. I would feel so lost and alone and just go outside and distract myself with imaginary games. I remember because of this, the moments where I would overheat my parents show off to parents of friends of mine how "I was such an easy kid" and how I could entertain myself and be happy for hours. The other parents would be jealous. I wouldn't know why this would make me cry
My life first going to school was just sheer terror. I felt so abandoned. Every time mom dropped me off I'd kling around her leg crying and screaming. Then afterwards, I wouldn't want to go home either. I remember how later in my childhood I still felt guilty for this behavior, because mom must have been so ashamed. I'd hang around teachers and daycare adults all the time. I wanted to hug everyone, because that was what I so desperately wanted.
My dad could never give hugs. Sometimes he'd allow it, but it would feel so distant. If my mom was starting to freak out about me, he'd sometimes intervere and call me to 'it's done now!' and 'go to bed'! No matter the time. I'd lay in my bed, just trying to curl up and feel somewhat comfortable.
In primary school, I would constantly visit friends. It continued in highschool too. I had two music classes and sports, so for four days a week I was settled after school - not having to go home immediately. Home didn't feel safe. It wasn't a constant. Some days there would be dinner at a nicely put dinner table and we'd eat together, some days I'd just eat some bread myself.
Some days mom would just be lying in bed. I found a video, that's why I remember. She would'nt get out until the beginning of the evening. This was in the time she would normally make me some lunch, or ya-know, take care of me. Suddenly I'd have to do everything alone.
I was constantly entertaining myself with imaginary friends at home. I'd play outside until I was 17 or so, alone. My cat was pure innocence and love but when I told my parents he was 'coughing' they didn't want to believe me. They only took him to the vet when it was too late and never apologized or were able to own up for this.
When I was 14 I wrote in my diary I was looking forwards to visit grandma. She's my mom's mom, and I would sometimes spend up to a week there just to be able to relax and be loved unconditionally. My mom would terroize me with her stress and anger and accusations to a point I couldn't focus on school. I wrote how she'd come into my room calling me names and how I couldn't read my homework papers through the tears.
My dad was never really there. He'd choose himself to be out of the house in the morning before mom and I'd be out and then when he was back he wouldn't make it further into the house than his TV chair. My parents would watch TV for hours when I was a kid. If I asked "what are you watching" they'd both go "Shhhh!". If I'd push it futher, the'd send me upstairs.
I feel like I spend so much time just hiding from my parents. Wheter it was upstairs in my bedroom all day, and night, or if it was outside. I now also remember just biking for hours crying hoping someone would stop and console me. I'd make the wrong friends and smoke weed at 16 just to stop the thoughts.
I would visit friends just because their house was calm and safe. I'd get a nice dinner there, and it would be a whole new experience. My parents would always be easily agitated. I am hyper senstive, hyper aware. I get uncomfortable just seeing them being uncomfortable. I remember I could already feel the energy from streets away. Sometimes I knew it would be wrong and I'd just bike somewhere else and go home later.
In one diary entry, I describe how my parents told me to write a letter to my dad's mom for her birthday. I finish the letter, and only then I allowed myself to take a shower and take care of myself. I would rot in bed, and rot in my dirty hair for days, just like mom. On other days she'd be so happy, she'd be re-decorating the entire house, invite me to go rollerskating.
But I also remember how many times my parents threatened to throw me out of the car. I remember how my 'reaction' to whatever they 'gave me' would never suffice. Then I would be the bad guy, for not being thankful.
My parents, they did everything for me. They paid for everythingg. Ya-da Ya-da, but I never had a proper hug from my dad. I don't know why he's even with my mom. I think he's a fun dude, but he's in mental pain. My mom told me way too young how her trauma's affected her. My dad's childhood would always be an excuse that I had to empathize with when I asked mom as a kid "if dad really loved me".
Other memories involve me running upstairs and then one parent following me. I don't remember getting hurt physically, but I remember all my life the pain I can see in their eyes.
If I look at pictures from my teenage years now, I can finally see the depression in my eyes. It took me up until this year to finally understand that having a clean kitchen and bathroom is something you do because you think you are worthy of a clean space. I had to get out of a depressionhole again over the years many times. I now realize the constant self critisism should have been self love. So that I would feel worthy of taking a shower and brushing my teeth.
I now see how what I saw as 'good experiences' are mostly just my parents taking me somewhere to do some activity and it just fits the perfect family picture. I was their only child but we'd celebrate christmas with many, many presents for me. But once my grandparents didn't live anymore, the birthday parties and tradition celebrations weren't hosted anymore by my parents. I wonder for who they truly did it. I was a golden child, but later in life I was just a burden.
I moved out the first chance I got. They didn't stop me. I was barely 17. I got into partying and drug abuse. I would sleep for weeks in bed. Barely ate. Then I would drag myself out of it again and have missed my mom's birthday. I was the one ruining the relationship to them.
I realized last year my parents had not called me for over 7 months. That was the first time I cried since the last time I did as teen. It's always coming from me.
My depression, my axieties and the treatment my parents gave me were never seen. It was never validated until I could finally read my diary with new eyes and watch those videos. I never got professional help but I will look for this now. I am really longing for someone to tell me what I was going through wasn't normal.
I did not remember this until yesterday, BUT, I am so used to being called weak, sensitive, a cry-baby, a bitch, for telling my mom how her verbal abuse made me feel. I feel so weird, how I repressed all of this for so long and the past years I tried so hard to still visit them and give them hugs and they felt good and now it all just feels fake and weird again.
Well yeah, so this is about everything that's been on my mind today. I feel totally weird. It's a tuesday and I couldnd't even work today. I am lost.

2024.05.21 15:55 HeheheBlah How is time perceived in Telugu?

I came across this Quora answer for "Why does Kerala Government impose an economically worthless Malayalam in Kerala schools instead of making it as an optional language because a Malayali cannot get lucrative employment by learning Malayalam?" from this post.
The answer is a lengthy one, and may seem irrelevant to the title "How is time perceived in Telugu?", but please keep reading, I have my questions at the end of the post...
This question reminds me of a story of the Roman emperor Vespasian. One day, an inventor visited the emperor and showed him the blueprint of a mechanism that could transport columns and beams to a construction site quickly and without any manual labor. This brilliant machine could've kickstarted industrial revolution 1700 years before it actually happened. But much to the inventor's shock, Vespasian turned him down, saying “my people need jobs, our slaves need jobs. If the machine does all the work, our people will be jobless. Our slaves would get free time to organize themselves and would start revolts”.
Vespasian feared that the new technology was ‘economically worthless', as it would make people and slaves jobless and send the country into total chaos. In short, he was technologically shortsighted. The inability to foresee what technology could bring to his people in the long run pulled him down. He was deluded by the fragile nature of the economy and had no idea how to rebuild it if this revolutionary mechanism would be allowed to operate.
This was the reason why ancient Rome was never industrialized, despite having a lot of excellent inventors and engineers. Those in power were worried about the unemployment a sudden revolutionary idea would create and failed to accept how beneficial this would be for the people in the long run.
The reason for narrating this story is that it is remarkably similar to the dilemma mentioned in the question. Vespasian thought, “allocating resources to inventive technology instead of manual labor is economically worthless since people and slaves won't get lucrative jobs”.
Replace ‘manual labor' by ‘English' and ‘inventive technology' by ‘Malayalam', and you get our question.
“Allocating resources to English instead of Malayalam is economically worthless since people and slaves won't get lucrative jobs”.
Likewise, English persists as the language of official usage for most jobs not because Malayalam is incompetent or inefficient, but because the current ‘system' revolves around English. That makes Malayalam seem like a burden on students, with no economic worth. An engineer who does all his learning from foreign textbooks and uses English terminology has no lucrative use of Malayalam. A software developer who needs to know all computer-related terms in English has no use of Malayalam. The same goes for an accountant, a doctor, a clerk, and pretty much all ‘white collar' jobs you can think of. Even those who might benefit from learning Malayalam like historians or linguists might consider English infinitely more useful since most of the written books and research work on those fields are in English. There is enough reason for people to think that spending government resources for teaching Malayalam is worthless like how Vespasian thought that appreciating technology was worthless.
But time proved Vespasian wrong, although by sheer luck. Christianity replaced Paganism as the dominant religion in Europe. Since slavery is forbidden in Christianity, European kingdoms started banning it. Feudalism and class based labor also started declining as the plague wiped out significant fractions of each class and as the military shifted from armies to professional fighters, thereby weakening the nobility’s hold on power. With the lack of a powerful ruling class to impose and manage heavy manual labor, the stage was finally set for a technological revolution and the industrial revolution finally began in Europe, 1700 years after Vespasian.
Some of you might be doubtful of comparing the case of English vs Malayalam with manual labor vs automated machines. Are they even comparable in the first place?
Industrial revolution made life easier for people because it freed people from the heavy manual labor and made it possible for them to spend more time for their personal development. Likewise, teaching in Malayalam instead of English would make people engage more with their personal and cultural lives. Teaching lessons of science and history in English forbids Malayalis from using them in their lives. This is because these two languages are different at a fundamental level since they belong to two different language families. If you are a Malayalam speaker and you learn science and history in English, it'll be impossible for you to use them in your daily lives because you conceptualize the world around you in completely different ways while you speak or think in these two languages. In linguistics, this changing of cognitive metaphors while using different languages is known as code-switching.
Let me share my own experience. I studied in Malayalam medium in primary and high school. Hence my way of understanding science and history is through Malayalam's (or Dravidian) cognitive metaphors. Those who study in English or other related languages like German, Persian or Hindi would use the Indo-European cognitive metaphors. Once I started reading books in English, I started to realize how different these are.
Let us take time for example.
How an English speaker views time
Speakers of Indo-European languages like English and Hindi conceptualize time as a long line through which you move at a steady rate. Your past is the segment behind you and your future lies in front of you. Time is a one-dimensional straight line in Indo-European languages (the only exceptions are Italic and Hellenic branches. They see time as a growing volume instead of a long line).
This is why these languages describe the duration of events as either “long” or “short”, which represent the length of a line segment.
Consider the statement “I've been waiting for a long time”.
The italicised part, translated into different Indo-European languages would be:
English (Germanic) : “ long time”
Sanskrit (Indo-Aryan) : “dīrghakāla”
Hindi (Indo-Aryan) : “lambi der”
Persian (Iranian) : “moddat zamân tulâni”
Lithuanian (Baltic) : “ilgas laikas”
Irish (Celtic) : “tamall fada”
All those words indicated with bold letters are synonym for “long”. The same could be observed for events with less duration. All these languages use the adjective “short”, just as what you might expect from their way of perceiving time as a horizontal line.
Hence many words describing events associated with time like emotions in these languages are derived from roots that mean “long” or “short”. The English words “longing” (from ‘long') and “hope” (ultimately from Greek ‘kúptō' (to bend forward) ) are examples.
(By the way, there are two slightly different variants of the Indo-European concept of time. This video explains it beautifully with a riddle)
.
How a Malayalam speaker views time
Speakers of Dravidian languages like Malayalam have a much more sophisticated three-dimensional view of time. For Malayalis, the passage of time is vertically upwards, not to the front. Also, time isn't a single line here. Multiple vertical lines of progression of time arise from the two dimensional patches of land. In Malayalam, this two-dimensional ‘area' or patch of time is known as “pāḍu” (പാട്) which literally means “a bounded area” (hence the adjectives like “orupāḍu” and “appāḍe”). Related events that take place at a particular location are visualized as multiple vertical lines growing from that patch. A different place or a different person would be visualized as a different patch with its own vertical growths.
You have to be a Dravidian speaker to fully understand this. Imagine a set of events.
If it is the same event occurring over and over again, it is perceived as looping around a small vertical segment over and over again. In Malayalam language, this corresponds to the adjective ഒത്തിരി (ottiri) - literally “many turns/loops” (root ‘tiru' - turn/spin).
If that set of events represent a growing process or emotion, it is perceived as a line that grows vertically. In Malayalam, the adjective in this case is ഏറെ (ēṟe) - literally “climbing up/ascending” or വളരെ (vaḷare) -literally “growing upwards”.
If those events are concurrent yet different, they are perceived as multiple vertical growths originating from the same patch on the plane. In Malayalam, the adjective is ഒരുപാടു (orupāḍu) - literally “an area of” (‘pāḍu' - a bounded area).
If those events are completely independent, then they exist in different patches and the adjective പല (pala) is used.
In short, a Malayalam speaker has four different ways of translating something like “a long time”, depending on how the person spent that time. If they spent that time by counting sea waves, they might say “ottiri nēram”. If the time was spent, say, by building a sand castle, they might say “ēṟe nēram”, and if they were doing many different things, they might say “orupāḍu nēram”.
This is true in the case of other Dravidian languages as well. For example, in Kannada, the word ಪಿರಿ (piri) - heightened/advanced - (now mostly displaced by the loanword ಬಹಳ (bahaḷa)) would correspond to Malayalam “ēṟe” and ತುಂಬಾ (tumbā) - literally, a crowd of/amassed - would correspond to Malayalam “orupāḍu”. A Kannada speaker would say “bahaḷa samaya” for the time spent for building a sand castle and “tumbā samaya” for the time spent for doing multiple things
(However, in some Dravidian languages, this way of visualizing time has been replaced by the Indo-European linear time because of Sanskrit imperialism. But that is a different story.)
In short, as a Malayalam speaker, I conceptualize my entire life in front of me. My brain visualizes all the places I've been to and the people I've interacted with as different patches (pāḍu), each one having multiple vertical segments that grow or add a new one each time I visit again. However, when I speak or learn in English or Hindi, it is completely changed and I'm forced to visualize time and events to be part of a long line with my past behind me and my future in front of me. This switching of conceptual metaphors is known as code-switching in cognitive linguistics.
This means that I as a bilingual describe an event that happened the day before yesterday as “two days back” in English and “raṇḍụ nāḷ munpu” in Malayalam. Here, “munpu” means “frontside” and back means, backside. For an English speaker, the past lies as the line segment behind them (back), and for a Malayalam speaker, the past is a patch that is much further to the front than the one they are in at present. Notice how the concept of past flips completely with the change of language.
Think of English's concept of time as a long railway track with a train (representing the person) passing through it and Malayalam’s concept of time as a sugarcane field with multiple patches of land having a bunch of upwards growing stems.
The reason for describing all this is to highlight how different the perception of events are in these two languages. And remember that we have considered only time. Nearly all abstract concepts are visualized differently in unrelated languages. A Dravidian’s world is completely different from that of an Indo-European.
Now let us come back to the original question. What happens if a Malayalam speaker is given education only in English? The result is, they could never use the science and history they learn in their personal and cultural lives. Personal and cultural aspects would be pictured in one way and things that they learn at school would be visualized in the other way. This means that all those things would be useful only for earning money or doing research and they would be useless for their personal growth and the cultural development of the society.
In fact, this is exactly what is happening in Kerala now. All those highly educated people conceptualize the world in the Indo-European way thanks to being educated in English or sanskrit-imposed Malayalam while the common people view the world with the classic Dravidian metaphors. This stunts the growth in cultural, political, religious and scientific fileds in Kerala.
Not to mention that English's concept of time is much too simple and inefficient for describing things and when it comes to fields intricately connected to time like history or biological evolution, it often fails miserably. I recently wrote an an answer on how the public perception of evolution is incorrect and horribly misleading. In fact, the visualization of time as a simple long line is one of the reasons for this. This metaphor is much too simple to handle a complex probabilistic theory like evolution.
However, for someone who learned evolution in Malayalam, it would be a much more sophisticated process and it would be easier to visualize it without being misguided. Learning in Malayalam is much more efficient and productive in this case. I consider myself lucky for having had most of my schooling in Malayalam medium thanks to which I routinely apply the things I've learned in all aspects of my life.
So, to summarize,
Malayalam being economically worthless is a reality of the present, but it is not so because Malayalam is inefficient or unproductive in usage. As we saw here, educating in Malayalam is actually necessary for the learned things to be put into practice in life and society. It is just that the current system uses English and a total change would require nothing less than a revolution. Nevertheless, the cost of not educating kids in Malayalam is huge, as it leads to a stagnation in cultural, religious, political, and scientific aspects of Kerala.
--END OF THE ANSWER--
I wanted to share this answer here too and wanted to discuss about its points (specifically how different people view time).
How Telugu language and Telugus view time? Does it differ by dialects? Did Sanskrit influence this part of Telugu? What other things does Telugu perceive in a different manner compared to other languages?
This means that I as a bilingual describe an event that happened the day before yesterday as “two days back” in English and “raṇḍụ nāḷ munpu” in Malayalam. Here, “munpu” means “frontside” and back means, backside.
The only aspect I recognised which I use in Telugu like "rendu dinalu mundu" (Two days ago).

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an excellent remake of an excellent game with enough modern additions to make it feel fresh and new.
COGconnected - James Paley - 90 / 100
Thousand Year Door is a remake done right. The new sound and visuals look terrific. The game’s essential identity has been preserved. Plus, the original release is able to shine through with no distractions. It’s exactly as wonderful as you remember it being. I’m still impressed with the writing, and the level design is mostly excellent. I still hate the tournament arc, though. And I wish some of the puzzles didn’t involve scouring a dungeon until a forgotten button or door is dragged into the sunlight. Although the original release is amazing, it’s also nearly impossible to play anymore. For new and old fans, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is an essential addition to the Nintendo Switch library.

Nostalgia goggles haven't failed us: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is still a masterpiece. With vastly improved graphics, a great rearranged soundtrack, and a few tasteful gameplay touchups, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Nintendo Switch is now the best version of this fan-favourite classic. The only thing missing is extra content for those who have already played it, but for everyone else, there's no reason not to pick this one up.
ComicBook.com - Marc Deschamps - 4.5 / 5
All in all, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an easy recommendation. For those that never got a chance to play the original game, there's no better time than the present, and the Nintendo Switch version is easily the best way to play it.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a masterpiece that continues to enchant nearly two decades after its initial release.
Daily Mirror - Scott McCrae - 4 / 5
Though Hellblade 2 has the power to force your jaw open and give you goosebumps, too often the whole project ends up feeling like a very expensive tech demo – an absolute tour de force of technical achievement bogged down in its own sense of gravitas and mystery. Keeping you off the stick for so many of its most impactful moments, and not giving you enough to play with when you do have control, hobbles the potential of this visual and aural masterpiece enough to make the whole experience feel like it was constantly trying to find a foothold on that dread Icelandic scree, and never really getting to its feet until you come staggering over the finish line.
Daily Star - Tom Hutchison - 4.5 / 5
Overall a beautiful looking game, one that feels fresh and in-keeping with recent modern Mario efforts.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door stands the test of time and is fantastic on Nintendo Switch.
Digitec Magazine - Domagoj Belancic - German - 4 / 5
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a classic Mario role-playing game that every fan of the chubby plumber should play. If you've already played the original, it's worth taking another trip into this paper world thanks to the completely revamped graphics and soundtrack.
The simplified role-playing mechanics and the interactivity of the turn-based battles make the game accessible even to beginners and players who don't usually like RPGs. The numerous environments impress with their quirky humor, excellently written characters and a beautiful paper look. What I didn't like were the annoying backtracking passages and some tedious mechanics. They unnecessarily slow down the pace as the game progresses.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a magical combination of parameters that make this title must have!
GAMES.CH - Benjamin Braun - German - 87%
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is still a great mixture of RPG and platformer with fine papercraft graphics and humorous story. But in terms of content, the visually advanced Switch version delivers nothing new for dye connoisseurs of the GameCube original, which makes it less interesting for them as for players who experience the remastered version for the first time.
Game Informer - Kyle Hilliard - 8.3 / 10
Thousand-Year Door is now a series highlight. It marks the first instance of where I didn’t want a Mario RPG to go (I generally prefer the Mario & Luigi direction), but the constant fourth-wall breaking, myriad colorful and unique characters, and its willingness to just be weird all lead to a joyful journey.
Glitched Africa - Marco Cocomello - 9 / 10
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake is wonderfully crafted for modern hardware while still capturing the magic and love of the original 20-year-old game. There’s a reason this is a cult classic and now everyone can enjoy it.

Whether you're replaying for the new visuals, or a very lucky first-time player, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is one of the best RPGs ever to come out of Nintendo.
IGN - Logan Plant - 9 / 10
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an amazingly loyal and visually dazzling remake of a treasured RPG, and the improvements made throughout easily make this the definitive way to experience Mario’s unforgettable quest.
Nintendo Life - Alana Hagues - 9 / 10
For 20 years, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has been held as the best Mario RPG of all time, and the Switch remake proves it has earned that title. This is a fantastic RPG adventure, whether you're a Mario fan or not, with some best-in-class combat, brilliant writing, and a few little creases ironed out to make this the definitive way to play Thousand-Year Door. We wish there was a little more to do post-credits, but there's no doubt about it, this is a beautiful-looking Switch remake and a must-play RPG.
Nintendo News - 9 / 10
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Nintendo Switch improves upon the GameCube classic in almost every way; not just with its impressive graphical overhaul, but with plenty of quality-of-life changes and additional content too. As long as you can handle some occasional backtracking and a reduced frame-rate of 30fps, this is undoubtedly the ultimate Paper Mario RPG experience. Mario games usually put the narrative to the wayside to focus on having fun and engaging gameplay, but The Thousand-Year Door manages to do both and succeeds at it in such a way that still hasn’t been topped 20 years later.
Press Start - James Mitchell - 9.5 / 10
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year-Door is a masterful remake that improves on the original in practically every way while keeping everything that made it a mainstay in the Nintendo canon. While its timelessness is reflected in the strength of its humour, wit and story, a major visual overhaul and much needed quality of life improvements make The Thousand-Year Door an adventure that can't be skipped.
SECTOR.sk - Michal Korec - Slovak - 8.5 / 10
It is not a full-blown remake with overhauled graphics or new episodes. But deep within lies truly one of the best parts of the series to be enjoyed even 20 years later with excellent gameplay, sharp-wit writing and funny dialogues for long evenings or short bursts.
Saudi Gamer - Arabic - 9 / 10
Behind its vibrant and cheerful appearance hides a great battle system and a memorable cast of characters and events in a world brimming with content. Just be aware that some patience is required to enjoy the ride fully.
Spaziogames - Gianluca Arena - Italian - 8.2 / 10
The Switch version of Paper Mario and the Thousand-year door is a rare delight, just like the GameCube one before it: it's a funny and clever mix between a turn based RPG and a platform game, full of jokes and memorable characters. The price might be a little bit steep and the frame rate is halved if compared to the original, but it's still worth to dip your toes into it even twenty years later.
Stevivor - Ben Salter - 9 / 10
The Thousand-Year Door remake is a triumphant return for Paper Mario. It turns back to an earlier chapter in the series that knows exactly what it’s trying to achieve and does it masterfully.
TheGamer - Ben Sledge - 4 / 5
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will probably be the last Mario game to release (solely) on the Switch. While Wonder will take the plaudits, porting this cult classic means that a new generation of players can experience it. New fans will have a ball, laughing along with Mario & co., even if their experience will be slightly marred by the backtracking and pacing. Old fans will enjoy the quality of life improvements and some new additions. Whether you’re a Paper Mario veteran or this is your first time entering his origami world, this is the definitive way to experience The Thousand-Year Door.
TheSixthAxis - Stefan L - 9 / 10
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a wonderful remake of a GameCube classic. Now in a modern game engine, but with all the quirkiness and charm of the original story and characters, and with a return to the original Paper Mario combat style, it's great for Mario RPG fans and newcomers alike.

While I wasn’t there for the original, I now completely get just why Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is so revered among Mario fans, and why demands for a remaster were practically ceaseless. It’s the absolute pinnacle of Mario RPGs, and if it was a bit more focused as an overall narrative experience, in the discussion as one of the plumber’s best-ever games.

Alongside last year’s excellent Super Mario RPG remake, The Thousand-Year Door is one of the very best Mario spin-offs on Nintendo Switch, whether you’re an old fan or discovering it for the first time.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a classic RPG with a perfect blend of turn-based combat and adventuring complete with a rewarding unlockable abilities system that encourages you to explore every nook and cranny. Plus, its updated graphics, hilarious humour, and welcome gameplay improvements make it more accessible than ever. 🚪
Wccftech - Nathan Birch - 8 / 10
While the new Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door preserves the gonzo charm that made the original game a cult classic, not a lot has been done to deal with its padding and other design quirks. If you’re a hardcore Thousand-Year Door fan, worry not, you’re going to love this spiffy new version. If you’re new to the game or weren’t entirely sold the first time around, you’re still likely to find plenty to enjoy here, but you may also notice a few tattered edges.

2024.05.21 14:49 BasicallyBacon Custom Hexblade Paladin Oath - Dope or Nope?

Good morning all fellow DMs! I'm building a new campaign set to start in the next couple of weeks with a party of six adventurers. I see myself running this campaign for an extended period of time in a series of smaller story arcs taking place over the course of a couple months with small breaks between adventures. My party hasn't ever gotten to experience long term campaigns that allow their beloved characters to reach higher levels, so I'm excited to take them there. My players are all good personal friends and I have provided them all with a homebrewed feat to make their characters feel more personal and unique, most of which are just modified versions of existing feats that scale up in level.
That being said, I had discussed with my paladin, who's multiclassing into Hexblade, the idea of a custom oath, which I was all for. What I *thought* I'd receive when I asked for what he had in mind was a basic skeleton off an existing oath with a few cherry-picked features of other oaths that fit the narrative he was trying to tell. On top of the homebrewed feat, I knew this was pushing the limits of things I'd need to keep track of.
What I received instead was a completely custom, built from the ground up oath with a custom aura, two custom Channel Divinities, and a whole host of oath spells that are neither Paladin nor Warlock that, at first glance, seem to be a list of spells and abilities meant to abuse rulings, but I just don't know enough, and I'm seeking advice on the matter from DMs that are simply more seasoned than I am.
Oath of Correction
Tenets of Correction
Oath Spells
Channel Divinity (both)
Aura of Alacrity
Glorious Defense
Living Legend
So there's a lot here that jumps out at me, but know that a lot of it, particularly the parts that include jump height, are very on-theme for the character and have my full support. The things in particular I'm unsure about are spells like Bigby's Hand and Gravity Sinkhole that I can't find reasons for in any of the character's backstory and seem to only exist to abuse the fact that force damage is seldom resisted. Fire Shield is just a zero-counterplay, I-get-more-damage buff who's only purpose is to pump the character's damage. Catnap was included to abuse the fact that Warlocks get spell slots back after a short rest, allowing for all this crap to happen even more often. Silvery Barbs, I know there are a lot of DMs and players that either don't use this spell or straight up disallow it. I'm generally fine with it except in this case where it's not on either classes spell list and I can't find a reason why this character would have it other than it being a powerful spell. Two Channel Divinities, one giving temp HP, surely that's just too much utility, right? Glorious Defense feels like super Sentinel, albeit limited uses, but it feels really strong to just give allies three, four, five AC on a whim and get an attack of opportunity on them.
I'm just.... at a loss for where to go from here. I think it's really cool and I don't at all want to squash player creativity, but the build, when considering I'm a newer DM, seems like it's riddled with little interactions that are meant to take advantage of my awareness and completely break a fight wide open if my prep isn't 110% perfect. And in addition, some of the monsters I've considered to counter this thing would demolish anyone else in the party without hesitation, my party is fighting around CR 4 in the first session, but I don't think there are CR6 monsters that could confidently take this guy alone, but would one-shot the rest of my players. I don't mind that it might be OP so much as the dilemma I'm faced with, do I throw insane fights at my party expecting this Paladin to be a main character and carry the whole thing but could potentially wipe everybody, or do I make five other players just as complicated knowing that I can't keep the plates spinning as is.
Thank you for taking the time to read this early morning barrage of words. I appreciate you all more than could possibly be expressed.

NFS Unbound Vol. 7 — Ford Mustang Dark Horse & BMW M3 Competition Touring Stats
I updated my Looker Studio link with their stats, but here's the more detailed version. Also some thoughts but I'm not an expert so it's more for discussion than prescriptive.

BMW M3 Competition Touring

https://preview.redd.it/9kkruzi2pr1d1.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=701cfa13e02781538366fadf5ddbc5d7fbe8114b
  • Weight: 1940 kg
  • Drag: 0.55
  • Downforce: -1, -0.1 offset
  • Peak Tire Grip: 1.7 Front, 1.8 Rear
  • Differential: AWD, Center: 60% rear bias, Front: 20%, Rear: 70%
  • Highest HP engine: 573 bhp 3.5L V6 Hybrid (Up to 1070 bhp)
Essentially, heavy and lowish downforce, but the high drag, decent grip and AWD means it's controllable. The low downforce makes it easy to enter a drift. While drifting, the rear bias increases to 70%. In practice it feels pretty easy to control while drifting. Probably good for the A-A+ range?

Ford Mustang Dark Horse

https://preview.redd.it/ovkmoxi2pr1d1.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1ed9af3ed12ee258a6bda121541f5215265659a
  • Weight: 1803 kg
  • Drag: 0.628
  • Downforce: -1, -0.15 offset
  • Peak Tire Grip: 1.8 Front, 1.95 Rear
  • Differential: RWD, Rear: 50%
  • Highest HP engine: 563 bhp 5.5L V8 (Up to 1244 bhp)
I was wondering if it would feel like the Camaro Z/28 which was like "argh stop sliding at the slightest turn" especially since it's so heavy. But it has double the drag, slightly better grip and a slightly more relaxed differential (the Z/28 has 60%) so it feels pretty decent even at high speeds. The gear ratios are very Ford. 6th gear is very long, which would be nice if the score system was fair, but in this game it increases max speed by a lot which increases the car's class. I'd probably downgrade it to 5 gears and use it in S. In On Rails the straight line speed felt really good at S.
Generally the post-Audi cars seem to have really high drag compared to the BRZ's physics-defying 0.07, and their tires seem very grippy compared to the two Silvias' 1.5 Rear grip. Comparing differentials, the Dark Horse's 50% is much more relaxed than the Mustang GT's 75% so it doesn't spin out as easily, though the downside is at very high speeds in S+ it feels like hitting 230mph takes fooooreeeverrrr. Hot take: I don't think they actually changed the handling model, they just gave the cars more lenient handling stats. Which is honestly fine if it does the job.

2024.05.21 14:12 future_RILF CB was one of my favorite things about the US

I had taken spin classes before in Germany and it was fun but Cyclebar hits different ya’all. I moved to LA in 2023 not knowing a single soul, thought I’d join a fitness class to get in shape and make some friends. And quite serendipitously, found a CB a couple of blocks away from my place. From the first class itself, I was hooked and signed up for the unlimited package right away.
Saying I looked forward to going everyday would be understatement. That has never been the case with any workout I’ve ever done. Most days I would be so excited I’d arrive 30mins early and would have to go walk around the block before entering the studio lol. Everyone was so friendly, I made friends and would dm back and forth with the trainers as well. Also, as a lonely, single het guy, being surrounded by all these health conscious women didn’t hurt too haha. I even invested in workout clothes and planned my outfits for each day. I did 240+ classes in my 10 months in the US and I swear I had FOMO on the days my legs wont let me go.
By the end of November, I was in fantastic shape! I was eating whatever I wanted, my endurance levels were off the charts and my resting heart rate was that of a professional distance runner. CB also gave me hope for my golden years. As a former fat kid, I always assumed I would gain the weight back as I got older because everyone gets a belly in their 50s and 60s right? But with CB being so fun and easy on my joints, I thought I had a real shot at being a hot grandpa someday haha. Not just fitness, CB also helped me broaden my music taste as well and my playlists are now triple the size they were before CB.
Sadly, my life went to shit pretty soon. I got laid off in November and had to leave the US due to an expired work visa. I still remember how I bawled my eyes out on the way home after my last CB ride. Having the life I had built for myself taken away from me has been brutal but I am trying to fight back. I have spent the last 6 months talking to lawyers so I can get a visa so that I can then look for a job in the US. It would make so much sense to just stay in Europe but I am old and my heart is set on LA and this one CB studio. I cant wait to get back. You better believe I would be the happiest lad in all of US the day I get to ride in CB again.

2024.05.21 13:31 ImmortalThunderGod79 Historical Analysis of Oda Nobunaga - Japan’s First Unifier and why I am intrigued to see the Assassin’s Creed series’s depiction of him

Historical Analysis of Oda Nobunaga - Japan’s First Unifier and why I am intrigued to see the Assassin’s Creed series’s depiction of him
Hello AC fans, this is ImmortalThundergod79 back with another historical analysis for Assassin’s Creed Shadows where I will analyze the history, culture, great battles, weapons and tactics of Japanese history and the game’s portrayal of them.
Today I will be analyzing the most famous great unifier of the Sengoku Jidai himself - Oda Nobunaga. So without further ado let's do a brief rundown of who he is and what makes me cautiously excited to see how he is portrayed in AC Shadows.
He endured through many hardships and seen as a failure since his childhood
For most of Nobunaga's childhood and youth. He experienced a great deal of hardships as he was once perceived to be a “failure” in the eyes of many of his Oda clan members and peers around due to his eccentric and aloof behavior such as taking a liking to wearing women’s clothing, rebellious attitude to regularly playing games with children regardless of their social classes. Complete opposite of his younger brother - Oda Nobuyuki who was described to be much more dignified whom most of the Oda clan members and peers at the time favored more in being the head ruler of the Oda clan.
His relationships with both of his parents are often strained and being considered a “problem child”. His relationship with his father had gotten so bad that it was said when his father had died suddenly, Nobunaga had shown up at his father’s funeral being inappropriately dressed as he threw his ashes across the floor. Leading to one of his mentor figures to commit seppuku.
This led him to be named the “Fool of Owari”, being deemed an “embarrassment” to the family name and considered “stupid”.
Yet in spite of all this we would continue persevering and proven himself worthy as the leader of the Oda clan at the Battle of Okehazama despite being heavily outnumbered by the forces of Imagawa Yoshimoto.
He was known to be cunning, pragmatic and ruthless, but kind, fair, polite and even surprisingly forgiving
Nobunaga’s reputation as a cunning and brutal daimyo often stem from his ruthless exploits such as the assassination of his younger brother - Nobuyuki and violent campaigns against the Ikko-Ikki faction like the Sieges of Nagashima Castle and Mt Hiei](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Mount_Hiei). While it’s true that he was far from a saint, that goes for just about every other daimyo lord of his time and some of these were completely missing context and overlooking some of the nuances which some people had taken to face value, implying as if Nobunaga was carrying out these acts of violence indiscriminately.
For example him assassinating his own younger brother. He DID NOT just kill him out of cruelty to “secure his position of power”, those that said that often overlook the fact that Nobuyuki tried to rebel against Nobunaga and attempted to kill him twice in order to take his position as leader of the Oda clan all of which Nobunaga forgave him on until his patience and trust were tested. What DID YOU think was gonna happen?
In addition there is a misunderstanding that Nobunaga was “slaughtering ‘peaceful’ monks at Nagashima and Mt Hiei” as well as other misconceptions surrounding such events.
Take Mt Hiei for instance. We were once told in that event, massive amounts of temples were burned down and had a death toll of 20,000 casualties at the Siege of Mt Hiei, but recent proper evaluation academic scholars have found these were widely exaggerated because most of the temples were remained in good condition and in the actual primary source, the number of casualties was much smaller which was between 1,500 - 4,000 especially thanks to the lack of mass graves further proof that the 20,000 death toll was widely blown out of proportion.
Second in these events these “peaceful” monks were farrrr from peaceful as these were Sohei monks specifically who hold military power as some were either former samurai or were samurai who became monks, but didn’t give up their power. They were especially part of the Ikko-Ikki which was a fanatical separatist militia consisting of peasants, merchants, priests, commoners and jizamurai (country samurai) that rose up against the upper class daimyos, shoguns and samurais having grown restless from all the constant fighting and civil wars between them, hoping of succeeding and creating their own independent state and government similar to the South in the American Civil War (might not be the best analogy, but closest I can think of for you to get an idea). These peasant militia often violently attacked any daimyo and samurai on sight even if the two were of no threat to them, making it especially dangerous foreign travelers of the time. The Ikko-Ikki even attacked other states in Japan that they consider to be a “threat” which made them extremely problematic to many daimyo, samurai and imperial government across the country and in addition these same extremist groups callously took the lives of Nobunaga’s two half brothers, one cousin and one nephew leading him to hold a grudge against them which is why. So was he justified in what he did to the Ikko-Ikki? Depends on who you ask, but if these groups of fanatics were the ones who basically killed half of your beloved family members whom you trusted, can you really blame Nobunaga for feeling that way towards the Ikko-Ikki?
What is most surprising however is that despite Nobunaga’s merciless reputation as a warlord. There are also documented accounts written down about his kindness, understanding and forgiving nature.
He was said to address all of his followers from the highest retainers to lowest servants with respect and courtesy. Has even gone as far as to donate money and goods to the villagers, imperial court and temples/churches to help improve the lives and stability of the peasants, commoners, nobles and priests (both Japanese and European).
Along with that, he was known to be quite forgiving towards others even if they had made a mistake or were being treacherous such as when Nobuyuki attempted to rebel against and kill him twice or the fact that his long time retainer - Shibata Katsuie once sided with his brother in plotting to assassinate him yet despite discovering what he planned to do originally, Nobunaga instead pardoned Katsuie and chose to spare him if he swore allegiance to him instead which Katsuie would accept.
All this paints us a nuanced picture of whom Nobunaga was a person and character. A warlord who is as brutal as he is honorable which is so fascinating to study about.
He was open-minded and loved learning of new things
Of course we can’t talk about Oda Nobunaga without his deep fascination for Western culture and love for learning new things.
Nobunaga was highly known for appreciating European cultures, clothing, technology and goods. He was a learner and always hungry for knowledge and because of this would lead to him coming across the matchlock firearms introduced to him by the Portuguese which he liked so much that he began to order them to be mass produced, seeing just how useful and effective which they would become staple weapons of his samurai army which allowed him to rise to power.
His interest and desires of learning the ins and outs of cultures from across the world outside of Japan is especially evident in his close friendships with the likes of Luis Frois - the Portuguese missionary and Yasuke - the African servant of the Jesuit missionaries.
The circumstances surrounding his death continues to remain as one of the biggest mysteries in Japanese history
There continues to be many mysteries surrounding Nobunaga’s untimely death and why one of his retainers - Akechi Mitsuhide had betrayed him as many theories had often surfaced throughout the years and no scholars were able to definitively figure out what exactly was Mitsuhide whole motive for backstabbing Nobunaga just when he was so close to unifying the whole country.
Some said Mitsuhide had a personal grudge against Nobunaga, others said he did it to gain more power and influence. Some have even said he may have been manipulated by an outside party into carrying out the treacherous act (such as Toyotomi Hideoyoshi, Tokugawa Ieyasu and a few others who had been suspected).
Why I look forward to Assassin’s Creed’s take on the iconic Japanese historical figure
As you can see, all that I have written here. Oda Nobunaga is quite a rich character and figure to study about it. There is so much nuance and dimensions of his character. Assassin’s Creed at its best is more than capable of being able to find the right balance between doing a creative spin on iconic historical figures throughout history, but still preserving elements of historical accuracy on what made these figures what they are.
Nobunaga as we know is a cunning, pragmatic and ruthless warlord, but he was a charismatic, kind and fair leader altogether. Was he perfect? No, but he is human and flawed as we are. Just a man doing his best to unify a country that was torn apart by decades of civil war and to survive a tumultuous period in Japanese history where friends and allies can betray you and become your foes in one night.
so I am very curious to see how Assassin’s Creed Shadows will present all that aspects of him into the game as they done for many other historical figures they done before. If done right and written well, AC's portrayal of Nobunaga becoming just as beloved as the likes of AC’s takes on Leonardo Da Vinci, George Washington and Blackbeard.
List of primary sources and contemporary sources I used for my research information on Oda Nobunaga:
  • Shincho Koki (Translated to English as The Chronicles of Lord Nobunaga) by Gyuchi Ota - a former senior retainer of Oda Nobunaga writing accounts and deeds of Nobunaga’s life throughout the ages in this primary source
  • Historia De Japam (Translated to English as History of Japan) by Luis Frois - Portuguese missionary who spent many years living in Japan and forming a close friendship with Nobunaga himself, writing down many accounts in this primary source document of what kind of person and character was as well as some of the fascinating differences between European and Japanese customs
  • From the conversations I been apart with ParallelPain who provided all sorts of direct diaries, letters and documented accounts written down about the Sengoku Period of Japan
  • Several unspecified sources which I came across from the top of memory over the course of my years of research on Japanese history such as this one here and here

2024.05.21 11:39 RockSmith804 Homestays & Home Remedies: Unveiling Local Medicinal Plants and Traditional Healing

Traveling is often about discovering new landscapes, cuisines, and cultures. But what if your journey also included exploring ancient wisdom and healing traditions? In the heart of Himachal Pradesh, homestays offer more than just a place to stay; they provide a gateway to the rich heritage of local medicinal plants and traditional healing practices. Whether you're at the best homestay in Shimla or one of the luxury homestays in Himachal you're in for an enlightening experience that connects you with nature's pharmacy and the time-honored wisdom of the locals.

The Best Homestay in Shimla: A Gateway to Nature's Pharmacy

Shimla, known for its serene beauty and colonial charm, is also a treasure trove of medicinal plants. Staying at the best homestay in Shimla, such as Apple Blossom Retreat, offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of traditional healing. The hosts, who have deep-rooted knowledge of the local flora, often take guests on guided walks through nearby forests and meadows, pointing out various medicinal plants and explaining their uses.
During one such walk, I was introduced to the “Himalayan Yew,” known for its anti-cancer properties, and “Rhododendron,” whose flowers are used to make a soothing tea that helps alleviate headaches and cold symptoms. The hosts shared fascinating stories about how these plants have been used for centuries in local remedies, providing a deeper appreciation of the region's natural resources.

Luxury Homestays in Himachal: Blending Comfort with Traditional Healing

For those seeking a more opulent experience, luxury homestays in Himachal, like the Royal Pine Palace in Manali, offer both comfort and a connection to traditional healing practices. These homestays often have beautifully maintained gardens where medicinal plants are grown. Guests can learn about the cultivation and uses of these plants, and even participate in workshops on making herbal infusions, balms, and other natural remedies.
At Royal Pine Palace, the hosts organize regular sessions with local healers and Ayurveda practitioners who share their knowledge of traditional medicine. One evening, I attended a session on Ayurveda, learning about the principles of this ancient healing system and how it integrates with the local traditions of using medicinal plants. The experience was both relaxing and educational, providing insights into how these practices promote holistic well-being.

Discovering Traditional Healing Practices

Himachal Pradesh is rich in traditional healing practices that are passed down through generations. At the best homestay in Shimla, I had the opportunity to meet a local healer who demonstrated the use of “Nagkesar,” a plant used to treat digestive issues and joint pain. He explained how the plant's bark is made into a paste and applied to the affected areas, a practice that has been effective for centuries.
In the luxury homestays in Himachal, such as Royal Pine Palace, the integration of traditional healing with modern comforts is seamless. The homestay offers spa treatments that incorporate locally sourced medicinal plants. A massage with oils infused with “Kuth” (Saussurea lappa) and “Ashwagandha” not only relaxes the body but also rejuvenates the mind, showcasing the powerful benefits of these ancient remedies.

Immersive Experiences

The beauty of staying at these homestays lies in the immersive experiences they offer. At Apple Blossom Retreat in Shimla, evenings were spent learning to prepare herbal teas and concoctions using plants like “Tulsi” (Holy Basil) and “Giloy” (Tinospora cordifolia). The hosts explained how these plants boost immunity and detoxify the body, emphasizing the importance of using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Similarly, at Royal Pine Palace, I joined a cooking class that incorporated medicinal herbs into traditional Himachali cuisine. Dishes like “Siddu,” a steamed bread stuffed with a mixture of poppy seeds and ground nuts, were enhanced with herbs like “Ajwain” (Carom seeds) known for their digestive benefits. These classes highlighted how traditional knowledge is seamlessly woven into everyday life, making the experience both delicious and enlightening.

Conclusion

Staying at the best homestay in Shimla or one of the luxury homestays in Himachal offers a unique opportunity to connect with the region’s rich heritage of medicinal plants and traditional healing practices. These homestays provide more than just a luxurious stay; they open the doors to a world of ancient wisdom and natural remedies. Whether through guided nature walks, hands-on workshops, or immersive cooking classes, guests leave with a deeper appreciation of how traditional knowledge can enhance modern living. Embrace the chance to learn and heal, and let the beauty and wisdom of Himachal Pradesh transform your travel experience.

2024.05.21 09:47 MedicineOk2878 Auction - The Way Forward!

Alright guys, what’s over is over. We’re the Yellove Army and we take this up our chin and move!
But going forward we need to fill some gaps.
While Conway has been great, I don’t see him getting retained. Definitely feel a buy back is a better option in his case. That does leave a spot for other openers. Consider how the game is shifting, we can look at other aggressive options too. With Rutu fixed as an opener we need someone else who can go great guns. Who do you think can compliment him?
We need a bonafide batting overseas powerhouse. I’m talking about people who can blow attacks away with their ultra aggressive batting - the likes of Klassen, Russel, Miller, Pollard. We’ve not had such a player who can dismantle the middle phase. Someone who’s equally powerful against spin and pace. Who are the names that pop in your head?
We need pace. We need an all phase pace bowler. Someone who can bowl high 140s. And we need an Indian pacer with experience.
We need a proper genuine all rounder. Preferably a pace bowling all rounder to compliment our Chepauk squad.
We need a world class spinner. Someone who looks for wickets. All our spinners are defensive. I’m really looking at Ash coming back.
We need a good wicket keeper.
One thing I’d like to mention here is we are a peculiar set up that requires to build for a home and an away squad. At home we need stable batting and hood spin bowling with steady pace. Away, we need blistering batting and aggressive pace bowling. So we need to have a versatile team.
My Retentions: Ravindra Jadeja Ruturaj Gaikwad Matheesha Pathirana Rachin Ravindra Jersey Number 7 (if he decides to play).
I definitely think he can churn out one more season in terms of ability.
RTM: Devon Conway. Tushar Deshpande.
Some names I wish to see: 1. David Miller. 2. Glenn Phillips. 3. Ravi Ashwin. 4. Naman Dhir. 5. Sandeep Sharma. 6. Josh Hazlewood. 7. Dhruv Jurel. 8. Ashutosh. 9. Mitchell Marsh. 10. Glenn Maxwell (he is meant for CSK). 11. Aiden Markram. 12. Umesh Yadav. 13. T Natarajan perfect candidate.
Add names you’d like to see in CSK and talking about auction strategy. :)

2024.05.21 09:15 amalyounis Advice on the dizziness

Hello lovely people,
I’ve been practicing aerial hoop now for almost nine months (wow that flew by). I get really dizzy, but I also love doing spinning flows because they’re just gorgeous.
I usually get carsick, seasick, I can even get dizzy if I move my head in the “no-no” motion too fast.
I’ve been getting a little bit better, but still I sometimes leave class feeling too nauseous to drive home. Many people have told me I shouldn’t close my eyes, but I find that keeping them open makes me 10x more dizzy because I just see everything moving around me.
I’d really like some advice on how you guys overcame that, whether if it’s a certain technique or even medicine.

2024.05.21 06:15 StrongerThanU_Reddit A Theory I brewed up at like 11:00 at night about the subclasses and a theoretical 3rd darkness subclass. (Originally posted in a youtube comment section. As well as reposted from r/DestinyTheGame.)

Here's a link to where I originally posted this.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Xda-un-ppNA
Edit: Take this with like, 27 and a half grains of salt. I'm a Titan main, so lore nerds please don't put a pipe bomb in my mailbox if I get something wrong.
Edit 2: Reworked my theories on Strife (and changed its name to Strain), and Arc.
Edit 3: Reworked/added to Strand. Posted on Reddit for further review by the Destiny lore and theorycrafting community (AKA the Warlocks).
Edit 4: Reworked some structuring in the post itself. Added more/a better TL;DR section. Thought about removing this section because it's getting big.
TL;DR for subclass talk:
Maybe the subclasses are all different parts of physics guys.
Solar: Fusion (just look at the sun; it happens in the sun at ALL times)/heat
Arc: Motion/spacetime/time dilation/ movement of energy itself/"ARC-celeration"c(hehehe)/energy transfer
Void: zero point energy/gravity
Stasis: Absolute zero/stillness/fission (shattering?)
Strand: String theory (probably not)/(what I think it better represents) quantum enTANGLEment/choice
Strain/strife (possible names): entropy/no energy transfeimmovable objects, unstoppable forces, infinite masses and density etc.
Prismatic: theory of everything/unifying quantum theory (darkness) with general relativity (light?)
TL;DR for Strife/Strain supers:
TITANS: For their super they get a force field around them that absorbs damage and then explodes. The explosion stuns all 3 kinds of champions and only happens if damage is taken when shielding. Get half of super back if they take no damage.
WARLOCKS: For the Warlock super you cast a field around you that catches all projectiles shot at you and throws them back at the enemy that shot them. Basically just say "no u" to damage.
HUNTERS: You dead-on sprint through anything in your way. Doubles sprint speed at T3 mobility, but triples at T10. Downside: you can't stop running. Upside: anything you run into just sort of stops existing.
Okay, okay, I'm just going to ramble now. Take note that some terms/concepts here will feel weird and out-of-context without knowledge in these specific subjects.
Let's take a look at Void and Strand: Void could be gravity, a sort of connection that gets stronger as two objects get closer. Strand could be entanglement, a connection that forms a bond between two objects that works (spookily?) at a distance. They are both connections. Also with darkness being based around knowledge, if we look at only one of two entangled particles and it is spinning up then we can know without looking at the other particle that it is spinning down. Look at the Strand Clones; they are copies of the hunter that created them that have been entangled by the hunter. When they dodge, they create an unstable version of themselves that will explode when an enemy comes near it, or just unravel peacefully after a certain amount of time. Strand is often associated with sewing, weaving, and fabrics. Throughout other pop-culture what is also described as being sewn, weaved, or (more commonly) made of fabric? That’s right; space time. I think that strand has something to do with other timelines; other threads of existence. Perhaps the hunter pulls a specter from some other timeline to use as a weapon. (I mean what haven’t Guardians turned into weapons at this point). Maybe when Warlocks weavewalk, they enter another timeline identical to ours with a tether being cast between the two to keep them connected (if you don’t like that make up your own reason for why they stay partially visible in our world).
Alright now let's look at the easiest of the three groupings to talk about: Solar and Stasis. Solar is heat/fusion. Fusion happens in the sun and so it makes sense that solar is a subclass focusing on heat. Look at the buff "Radiant." It doesn't exactly have anything about it pertaining to fire, but I would certainly describe the sun as "Radiant." (this one's iffy but I thought I'd include it anyways). Now look at Stasis. I think that it HEAVILY relates to fission, which is (sort of but not really) the opposite of fusion. Let's look at the stasis debuff, "Slowed." This effect is the opposite of Solar's "Scorched" effect. At 100 stacks of Scorched, a target will ignite. Stars go through this same process at their birth, they slowly gather more and more mass, more and more heat, until eventually fusion happens, the star... ignites. At 100 stacks of "Slowed," however, the target freezes. Then, when damaged the target shatters, like in fission when we break atoms apart and release the energy. The target even shows this release of energy in Destiny because they glow bright then take damage. With fusion being the stronger of the two, it is certainly interesting that this season, Season of the Wish, the season before they drop the "theory of everything," Prismatic, Solar (fusion) is stronger than Stasis (fission). They might just (probably not) deliver this slap across the face in the Lightfall/Season of the Wish finale. Also on the less deep and more obvious side of things, they are both just fire and ice, I mean come on… that’s just cliche 101.
Okay moving on to Arc and Strain (my name for the 3rd Darkness subclass). This one is a bit more difficult. Arc is manifested as lightning. It's described as pertaining to motion and speed. It is "Arc-celeration." Time dilation happens when moving rapidly through space. Because space and time are the same force, the faster you move through space, the slower you move through time. This is very unintuitive, but the slower you move through time, the faster everything else moves through time (from your perspective). If you send a spaceship to the closest solar system (which is about 4 light years away) at the speed of light you will reach it in four years. Well, not really, there's also space dilation. Basically the faster you go towards something the smaller the distance between you and it. That's why a theoretical trip to another solar system at high speeds would have you decelerate after you reach the halfway point, so that you don't get farther from your destination. Satisfied sigh Oh, the complications of relativity, aren't they wonderful! Anyways back to what I was talking about: Arc transfers energy into motion and motion into energy. Thundercrash launches the Titan at high speeds until they hit something, releasing the energy as lightning, damaging the enemy. The Hunters' Arc staff deflects things by transferring their speed into energy and that energy into speed in a different direction. Warlocks use Chaos Reach to conjure stored energy and rapidly accelerate it in a beam of damaging energy. Titans' Fists of Havoc slam to the ground converting their falling momentum into damage like Thundercrash, and when they use their shoulder charge, they punch an enemy, changing their momentum into energy, and transfering that energy into a punch. Arc is energy transferal. Strain might be the opposite of energy transferal. Immovable objects, unstoppable forces, permanent momentum.
Ok ok ok... hear me out (also take these with 27 and a half grains of salt. I'm a Titan and brutality is a part of my culture.):
TITANS: For their super they get a force field tightly hugging their bodies for a short amount of time. The amount of damage they would have taken builds up and as they release this energy, they blast out in an explosion of damage that is completely unstoppable by any form of enemy with any kind of shield (it also stuns all champions). I'm talking Bubble popping power. If they take no damage, they get half of their super energy left and no explosion is caused. I call the Titans' super: UNBREAKABLE WILL
WARLOCKS: For the Warlock super you ground yourself completely and extend this unbreakable field of influence beyond allowing you to move (floating above the ground as always). ANY projectile or attack thrown at you is caught in this field and stopped until the super ends, when you unleash all of these projectiles back at the sender (if they aren't already dead). Melee attacks bounce back and damage whoever just hit you. I'm talking CATCHES Thundercrashes and turns that Titan towards any of their allies and LAUNCHES them. You are THE uno reverse card. I call the Warlocks' super: UNENDING VOLLEY
HUNTERS: You guys are the most mobile of the three classes, thus I have given you a roaming, movement-based super. You dead-on sprint through all that stands in your way. Doubles sprint speed at T3 mobility, but triples at T10 with all speeds between. Downside: you can't stop running. Upside: anything you run into just sort of stops existing. You are a living, breathing, and (most importantly) running .50 cal BMG round. Anything you can't kill in one hit you just run through allowing for another drive-by (through?) to be made. I call the Hunter's super: UNSTOPPABLE SPRINT

Now looking at Prismatic:
Prismatic is the sum of it all, it's the way that general relativity and quantum theory will eventually click into the perfect, symmetrical, equation. "The theory of everything," and "The Final Shape," kinda sound similar too. Just saying. ¯\_(-_-)_/¯
I don't have a lot on Prismatic.
All right, that's it. That's all I'll say. I could keep going. I could talk about Blink working on both Void and Arc (which I will a little anyways >:D) Void works 'cause of the physics behind hawking radiation and arc working because of what happens at "absolute fast" which is similar to absolute hot but instead the motion is given direction and not just molecules bouncing around really fast. Absolute hot is the opposite of absolute zero by the way for those that don't know. I could talk about my theory on resonance. But I won't, because this comment is already WAY TOO LONG and talking about anything more is going to make my brain start holding my heart ransom, threatening a heart attack.
That took an hour and a half to type... :/
And another half hour to edit. -_-
And another to do it again. T-T

Billet Engine Parts
I kinda got blasted by a few folks here for not realizing the learning curve some people have regarding billet engine parts. So I figured I’d take some time and fill in the guys who are unfamiliar with billet blocks and heads.
I have been racing nitro Funny Cars and building their engines since 2002. I’ve built hundreds if not thousands of fuel motors from de stroked 413’s to 496 inch big show engines.
In nostalgia Funny Car classes, I worked for teams that ran 413’s, 426’s, 440’s, and 496’s. All were based in the 426 hemi but each owner had his preferred displacement. The pros run strictly 496 CI 426-based hemis.
The blocks and heads are billet aluminum. The blocks and head are machined out of a solid block of forged aluminum. A CNC machine whittles away the block of aluminum until you have a finished engine block or cylinder head. This is good for strength and repairability. Billet stuff can be blow up beyond recognition and welded up and repaired. Repairs are way cheaper than replacement by a long shot. A new billet 426 block is over $12,000. Just to give you an idea.
When we break connecting rods and the side of the block gets punctured or completely blown off, the manufacturer can cnc machine repair parts to fit the chunks that got destroyed. They weld them back into the blocks or heads and then put them back in the CNC machine to true up the welding.
The blocks take cast iron liners for the pistons to ride in. The liners are replaceable between rounds. If a piston gets burned and damaged the liner we knock it out with a slide hammer and insert a new liner by simply pushing it back into place. It’s that simple. Main caps are billet aluminum as well and run through an extension heat treat process to harden them. The studs for the mains and heads are a material called A1. Harder than chromoly. They do not stretch as easily as chromoly and help keep head gaskets from blowing.
Main bores can be saddled if damaged. In other words if you spin a main bearing, we bore the main out and the area around the main studs. This allows for a saddle to fit in its place. It’s a replaceable piece of aluminum that sits in the block and holds the main bearing. Should it spin a bearing again, throw the saddle and bearing away and insert a new saddle. They’re highly serviceable thank god. Main caps are rarely if ever serviced. They just get replaced line bored.
Cylinder heads have tool steel inserts installed around the head stud holes to prevent the aluminum from galling when the heads are installed and torqued. Under each valve spring is a replaceable tool steel cup that holds the spring in place and also prevents the head from becoming galled from the motion of the valve spring. The valve guides are pressed in and are bronze. They’re also “blended” with the port work so they are not an air flow restriction in the bowl behind the valve head.
Heads often get “torched” when the engines blow head gaskets. They get so hot the combustion flame acts like a blow torch and actually blows the aluminum material away. This can be welded up and the head put back in the CNC machine and brought right back to spec. Same with combustion chamber damage. Broken rods tend to fling pistons into the chambers and do damage. They can weld the chambers and re-CNC the heads to bring them back to within spec.
On both blocks and heads, sometimes they cannot be repaired due to too many catastrophic failures and the block finally just becoming too far “out of square”. At this point, those blocks get parts or sections harvested from them for repairs of blocks of heads that are still repairable. Kind of like organ harvesting of a dead person, the same can happen with dead blocks and heads.
I know this is not the most tech-y of write ups, but I had a lot of people commenting and question about some remarks I made in regards to billet components of race engines. If anyone has further questions I will do my best to reply when I can. Here are some photos of my engines and engines I’ve built to race in the nitro Funny Car class.
