2024.05.19 07:13 Important-Plum-7112 I need serious help - Year 9 EOY

Ok so basically my year 9 EOY tests have just finished and I fucked up big time. For biology i got 64% physics 73% and chemistry 48%. I really tried studying the stuff we learnt but a lot of it was stuff we have rarely ever seen.
For my language Spanish it was a multiple choice reading test. This test was very difficult as my fellow peers said but some of the really dumb ones got extremely lucky and got 30 out of 45 and more meanwhile, I got a 16/45.
I am in the middle set for english and i fucked up the poem analysation test and got a 7/15 because I read the question wrong.
The only thing I didnt royally screw up was math were i got 85% and 92% on the two tests.
I have been really de-motivated and I really hope these don't go on my record. Just so you know I started studying the week before these tests.
Is there anything I can do better next time or any study habitats I should learn? And do these tests affect anything about my college application or anything?
Thanks for reading :)

2024.05.18 22:11 Definition_Novel Vytautas Montvila: the Lithuanian Diaspora’s true unsung hero.

Vytautas Montvila: the Lithuanian Diaspora’s true unsung hero.
In the age of current mass glorification via media from Lithuania and the United States of diaspora Lithuanian fascists like Adolfas Ramanauskas (Ramanauskas was born in New Britain, Connecticut, USA and later moved to Lithuania, later collaborating with Nazis during their invasion) or Lithuanian exile fascists like Jonas Mekas, few diaspora Lithuanians remember the names of revolutionary socialist Lithuanian diaspora heroes like Vytautas Montvila or Antanas Bimba. Antanas Bimba was a Lithuanian involved in the early American Communist movement, and a post will be made for him sometime later. As for the story of Montvila, It is up to Lithuanians everywhere to give this man his credit as a hero and martyr against fascism.
Vytautas was born to to an ethnic Lithuanian Catholic immigrant family in 1902 in the city of St. Charles, Illinois. His family, like many Lithuanian immigrants to America at the time, left Lithuania due to persecution by czarist Russian Empire authorities, whom sought to ban Lithuanian language as well as restrict the Catholic Church in favor of Orthodoxy. This persecution under czarism caused many minorities, particularly ethnic Lithuanian Catholics and Lithuanian Jews, to move often to the United States, Canada, or South American nations. In 1906, he and his family returned to Lithuania, moving to the city of Marijampolė. The family later moved to Degučiai, then a Marijampolė suburb.
As Vytautas grew older, between the years of 1922-26 he joined the Kėdainiai Teacher’s Seminary. It was somewhat of a social club for study, covering a wide range of topics, such as science, culture, atheism, and philosophy. Members were of various political parties, but it was here Vytautas became acquainted with local Communist activists and gained entry into the wider movement. The communists at these meetings often discussed Marxist theory, offered to share sections of the Communist Manifesto, and recruited members into local Worker’s Guilds. In 1923, he began writing his early poetry, often revolutionary in nature and influenced by avant-garde style. In his most famous poem, “Naktys be Nakvynės” (ENG: “Nights Without Accommodation”), written early in his career, he champions revolutionary socialism and personifies art of poetry as a tool for revolution. His later work from 1940-41 reflects the new Soviet period, condemns the reactionary past, hoping towards a socialist future in Lithuania. These later poems were influenced heavily by the works of fellow Soviet poet V. Mayakovsky, whose works Montvila enjoyed. These later works by Montvila were of a topical oratorical style, and he is credited often with having laid the foundation for other Lithuanian Soviet poets at the time. Montvila also wrote short stories and portions of novels. Among other feats, he translated the novel “Mother” by fellow Soviet writer Maxim Gorky, from Russian into Lithuanian, as well as translated the writer Émile Zola’s novel “The Collapse” from its original French into Lithuanian.
He shortly then studied in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Lithuania (Today, Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas).
Following his departure from university, he began a life fully committed to revolutionary socialist activism. In 1929, in an effort to organizationally unify leftist writers against the bourgeoisie, he published the revolutionary almanac “Raketa” (ENG: “Rocket.”) For this, he was imprisoned from his arrest in 1929 to 1931. During 1935, he moved back to Marijampolė, and published the “Skardas” (ENG: “Tin”) worker’s newspaper for the Communist faction of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party. He also published other socialist newspapers, titled “Darbas” (ENG: “Work”), “Kultūra” (ENG: “Culture”), “Aušrine” (ENG: “Dawn”), and “Prošvaistė” (ENG: “The Light”) for various leftist organizations. He simultaneously worked odd jobs to add to his livelihood.
Upon establishment of the Soviet Lithuanian government in 1940, Montvila, like many leftist Lithuanian citizens, was thrilled and ready for change, having been oppressed in a society previously plagued by issues such as anti-communism, rural serfdom, clerical fascism, anti-Semitism, and capitalist exploitation of all of the working people of Lithuania. Vytautas dedicated specialized time to working with Soviet authorities to publish and translate revolutionary texts from various authors, as well as delivering his own revolutionary pro-Soviet speeches. He continued this into 1941, the final year of his life.
Upon the Nazi invasion of Lithuania in mid-1941, he was captured by local collaborators and Gestapo. According to documents, he did not run or resist, rather instead defiantly, in true revolutionary martyr manner, insulted his captors. He was taken prisoner to the 9th Fort in Kaunas, where he was executed, being shot to death on July 19th, 1941, killed alongside many other Jewish and leftist victims of Nazi and collaborator fascist terror. To leftists who are aware of his heroism and revolutionary martyrdom, he is often compared to fellow revolutionary and Spanish poet F. Garcia Lorca, a leftist whom was executed by the Francoists. Vytautas, Lorca, and all revolutionaries shall be remembered forever. May we remember Vytautas Montvila, a hero to all Lithuanians, but especially to Lithuanians in the diaspora! Remember Vytautas Montvila, both uniquely a hero to Lithuanian-Americans, and the people of Lithuania!

2024.05.16 23:20 Significant_Song_220 Hiii sorry for the late post or probably a little bite early post

La llarona
Known as Maltinzin in her original nomenclature, today, the lore of La Llorona is well known in Mexico and the southwestern United States.
The earliest documentation of La Llorona is traced back to 1550 in Mexico City. But there are theories about her story being connected to specific Aztec mythological creation stories. "The Hungry Woman" includes a wailing woman constantly crying for food, which has been compared to La Llorona's signature nocturnal wailing for her children. The motherly nature of La Llorona's tragedy has been compared to Chihuacoatl, an Aztec goddess deity of motherhood. Her seeking of children to keep for herself is significantly compared to Coatlicue, known as "Our Lady Mother" or Tonantsi (who's also comparable to the Virgen de Guadalupe, another significant mother figure in Mexican-culture), also a monster that devours filth or sin.
The legend of La Llorona is traditionally told throughout Mexico, Central America and northern South America. La Llorona is sometimes conflated with La Malinche, the Nahua woman who served as Hernán Cortés' interpreter and also bore his son. La Malinche is considered both the mother of the modern Mexican people and a symbol of national treachery for her role in aiding the Spanish.
Stories of weeping female phantoms are common in the folklore of both Iberian and Amerindian cultures. Scholars have pointed out similarities between La Llorona and the Cihuacōātl of Aztec mythology,as well as Eve and Lilith of Hebrew mythology. Author Ben Radford's investigation into the legend of La Llorona, published in Mysterious New Mexico, found common elements of the story in the German folktale "Die Weisse Frau" dating from 1486.La Llorona also bears a resemblance to the ancient Greek tale of the demigoddess Lamia, in which Hera, Zeus' wife, learned of his affair with Lamia and killed all the children Lamia had with Zeus. Out of jealousy over the loss of her own children, Lamia kills other women's children.
The Florentine Codex is an important text that originated in late Mexico in 1519, a quote from which is, "The sixth omen was that many times a woman would be heard going along weeping and shouting. She cried out loudly at night, saying, "Oh my children, we are about to go forever." Sometimes she said, "Oh my children, where am I to take you?"
While the roots of the La Llorona legend appear to be pre-Hispanic, the earliest published reference to the legend is a 19th-century sonnet by Mexican poet Manuel Carpio. The poem makes no reference to infanticide, rather La Llorona is identified as the ghost of a woman named Rosalia who was murdered by her husband

2024.05.16 20:01 Fredrickthyme Impressionistic Master - Debussy’s Contribution

Claude Debussy, a prominent figure in Impressionist music, revolutionized harmony, melody, and cultural perceptions in music through his innovative compositions. Let's break down his impact statistically:
  1. Harmony:
    • Debussy's harmonic language moved away from traditional functional harmony, embracing modal and pentatonic scales, whole-tone scales, and parallel chords.
    • Statistical analysis could show a decrease in the prevalence of traditional tonic-dominant relationships and an increase in the use of non-functional harmonic progressions.
    • Debussy's harmonic vocabulary expanded the tonal palette available to composers, influencing subsequent generations of musicians.
  2. Melodies:
    • Debussy's melodies often featured fluid contours, incorporating elements of pentatonic and whole-tone scales.
    • Statistical analysis might reveal a departure from conventional melodic structures, with a focus on atmospheric, evocative lines rather than traditional, singable melodies.
    • His melodies often blurred the lines between melody and accompaniment, contributing to the overall impressionistic aesthetic of his music.
  3. Culture:
    • Debussy's compositions challenged traditional notions of form, structure, and tonality, reflecting the changing cultural landscape of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
    • His rejection of German Romanticism and embrace of French musical traditions helped to establish a distinct national identity in French music.
    • Through his use of exoticism and non-Western musical elements, Debussy contributed to the broader cultural fascination with the exotic and the mysterious during the fin de siècle period.
Statistical analysis of Debussy's compositions could provide insights into the frequency of specific harmonic progressions, melodic contours, and stylistic features. By examining patterns and trends within his music, researchers can better understand his unique contributions to the development of music harmony, melody, and cultural expression.
  1. Cultural Examples:
    • French National Identity: Debussy's rejection of German Romanticism and his embrace of French musical traditions helped to establish a distinct national identity in French music. His compositions, with their evocative depictions of French landscapes and folklore, contributed to a sense of cultural pride and nationalism.
    • Impressionist Movement: Debussy's music is often associated with the Impressionist movement in painting, which sought to capture the fleeting impressions of light and color. Like the Impressionist painters, Debussy focused on atmosphere, texture, and suggestion rather than precise detail, creating music that is more about mood and impression than literal representation.
    • Cultural Exchange and Exoticism: Debussy's fascination with non-Western music and exoticism is evident in works like Pagodes from Estampes and La soirée dans Grenade from Iberia. These pieces incorporate elements of Javanese gamelan music and Spanish flamenco, reflecting the broader cultural fascination with the exotic and the mysterious during the fin de siècle period.

2024.05.16 15:42 mouthofxenu Primarch Names and Etymologies; Part 1 (I-II)

I am blown away by how much this sub and interest in a female-centric version of Warhammer 40k has become in the last week or so. You’re all amazing!
A few months ago, I had some ideas for a noblebright version of 40k where the primarchs and Emperor were female. The inspiration was cnmbwjx’s incredible art, which I am pleased to see has inspired many of you as well. I considered creating feminine versions of the primarchs’ names and came up with a list. I figure this might be a good time to share it along with my thought process behind them.
Before we begin, this is in no way an attempt to derail anyone’s canon. I have seen several names on this sub that I think are better than what I came up with. I also think there is something to be said for using the original primarchs’ names if that is your preference. Girls don’t have to have “girl names” after all~
Feel free to use these or not. I just wanted to share because I think my thoughts on the origins of the original names and ways to play with them could help others to come up with their own takes on these characters.
This is going to be a very large info dump, so I’m going to divide this thread into multiple threads released daily (hopefully). Some of the names require lengthy discussions (brace yourselves for Konrad Curze) while others require relatively little. I will go through the list according to the numbered order of the primarchs. I think about two primarchs per day will work.
Part 2 (III-IV): https://www.reddit.com/PrimarchGFs/comments/1cttrb4/primarch_names_and_etymologies_part_2_iiiiv/
Part 3 (V-VI): https://www.reddit.com/PrimarchGFs/comments/1culiut/primarch_names_and_etymologies_part_3_vvi/
Part 4 (VII-VIII): https://www.reddit.com/PrimarchGFs/comments/1cvdtpq/primarch_names_and_etymologies_part_4_viiviii/
Part 5 (IX-XII): https://www.reddit.com/PrimarchGFs/comments/1cwuget/primarch_names_and_etymologies_part_5_ixxii/
My goal was to come up with satisfying names that stay true to the original names and their meanings / inspirations as possible. Where that was not possible or seemed to produce an unsatisfactory result, I afforded myself more creative liberties to try and capture the themes of the character and the sound of the original name.
I preserved alliteration with the all but one of the original names. I left surnames unchanged.
The majority of my posts will be an analysis of the original primarch names and an explanation of my reasoning for my feminine twist on them. It is my hope these explanations will assist others in their creative processes.
I have also included my suggested pronunciations for the names I think have unclear pronunciations. I did not use IPA phonetic notation because I do not think it is accessible for a casual reader since it requires using a reference list for the symbols. I instead use approximations of English syllables. Please let me know if any are unclear.
Several of these explanations may be straightforward to English-speakers and those familiar with 40k lore, but I think a detailed explanation is more inclusive. I have a feeling this sub will introduce many people to 40k that wouldn’t otherwise get into the official setting, so I want to help make your lore journeys easier.
Finally, I relied on Wiktionary and Wikipedia in researching the etymologies here. I am aware these are not ideals sources, but they’re the best I can do because of my work life. I would appreciate any corrections and supporting evidence. I certainly discovered some issues in my initial research going back through this list.
I: Leona Es’Jonson (Lion El’Jonson):
Edit: Originally I had "Lioness El'Jonson" here. My explanation for the change is detailed below.
A lioness is a female lion, so I felt compelled to stick to that. However, Lion El’Jonson is one of the cleverer primarch names.
It’s a reference to Lionel Johnson, a nineteenth-century English poet who was both a devout Catholic and a gay man. Lionel was at war with his own identity, which led him to write the poem “The Dark Angel.” The poem is an expression of forbidden desire and the torment of keeping secrets while trying to stay loyal to a higher power that you believe will condemn you if it found out who you really are. Sounds just like the Dark Angels space marine chapter with their secret shame over something that wasn’t their fault.
While Lioness loses this literary reference, I do feel that valor and fierceness are much more a part of Lion’s character than the secretiveness of his chapter. Therefore, I stuck with referencing the animal, which is synonymous with themes of ferocity and bravery.
Edit: A few days after posting this, I remembered that "El'Jonson" is not a surname, but a title. It was given to Lion upon his discovery by the people of Caliban after he had been living in the woods alone. In the language of Caliban, it means "Son of the Forest." My girlfriend likes the name "Leona Es'Jonson," which forms a double pun by making the Spanish word for "lioness" sound more like the English word "lioness."
Perhaps "Es'Jonson" means "Daughter of the Forest" on Caliban~
II: REDACTED: SIGILLITE-LEVEL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
A mind without purpose will wander in dark places

2024.05.16 13:20 shaneka69 NUMEROLOGY OF MONDAY

Monday is the first day of the work week that many people dread. Not all people dread it, but some. Let's take a look into the Numerology of Monday to decode the energy and what it can be used for to work with it and not against it.
M - this is the 13th letter of the alphabet vibrating at the energy of 4. The energy of 1 is action and the energy of 3 is connecting with others through collaboration. This puts a focus on responsibilities and for most people, it's a work or school day which connects with this. Although it is about being responsible, it's still the energy of 4 which is mellow and controlled energy. O - this is the 15th letter of the alphabet vibrating at the energy of 6 which is about using your creativity constructively to take care of the tasks or duties you need to take care of. 6 is the number of beauty, duty, and routine. N - 14th letter of the alphabet vibrating at the energy of 5. This is about using your energy to be responsible and making space for enjoyment while doing so. 14 is a karmic number, but not when used correctly. As a karmic number, 14 is about someone who ditched their responsibilities and now have to deal with some challeneges(5). Proper use of this energy is using it for creative purposes. D - 4th letter vibrating at the purest energy of 4 which is about calmness, caution, and security. A - vibrating at 1 as the first letter of the alphabet, this is about action and energy. Y - The 25th letter of the alphabet vibrating at the energy of 7, but through cooperation with others(2) and compassion for others(2) and with the use of creativity (5) or even humor(5). Big lover energy as 5 can point to romance and 2 can point to soulmates.
Monday full numerology comes down to 8 and 8 can represent long and drawn out processes, wait times, and pressure. The dreadful energy can be moreso due to this 8 energy. People can work with this energy by being patient as 8 points to tedious tasks. With this insight, you can now simply start expected a little time in between things and pacing yourself. It can seem like a long day or your duties may be plentiful.
This is a day best utilized in a constructive (8) way with the use of wisdom and calculation(7). The 7 is the soul urge influence of Monday based on the vowels. 2 vowels A and O which equals 7. Being calculating and seeking depth will allow you to master the energy of Monday. Use this day to get the most done with your projects or workloads.

2024.05.16 02:39 saint_disco Help transcribing and translating spoken word poem

Hi all, I’m trying to transcribe and translate a spoken word poem. I will post the link to the audio and here’s what I have so far. Also it’s in Colombian Spanish so there’s a few terms here and there I’m not sure I’m understanding correctly.
Thank you in advance!
Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17oINQqPScCll6D_ktaQXP3SW_II254xg/view?usp=drivesdk
Here’s the text I have to have so far:
El primo de mi madre que he visto dos veces en mi vida
mirando a mis tetas a los doce años
tiernas y sin contexto es un torno
recien salidas del horno
pasando de cantar la nana
a entender que soy un cuerpo sexual
una carne de deseo
cuerpo hibrido
presencia cambiante
mama colona
papa migrante
cuerpo con culpa
cuerpo de sangre
carne de territorio
lleno de sangre
furia atrevida
escandalosa hay contra zero
para picarte no nesecito veneno
si te brinco no te quitas
si te pico no te picas
te asusta mas que escuche reggeton?
a que tu primo de quarenta este (hubrio?)
con una carne de doce?
doble moral, moral superior
etica partida, furia atrevida
escandalosa hay contra zero
ignorante el que escuque reggeton
ignorante el que se cree superior
ignorante soy?
si tuviera de nuevo doce
asi te diria
como cuando yo via
en la casa
una nana te canto yo
un cua
en tro
en cuatro lo quiero yo
en mi (?) teta
te envidia que me aprieta
porque me permito
ser
estar
disfrutar de ese placer occulto que me querias guardar
merece respecto or no merece ninguno
mordete un poco la cara
mientras las manos tengo ocupadas
una en mi otra en ti
quiero (javierte/jodierte?) la cara
quiero (javierte/jodierte?) en el club
estoy temblando
(temble que quemando?)
cuerpo atrevido
cuerpo de furia
territoria de sangre
sangre sin culpa

2024.05.14 14:17 MojitoKitty Please read and do not judge. I beg.

I was raised a catholic but they do not believe in reincarnation. I have long ways to go in terms of religion but I absolutely believe in God and Jesus. However, I am very much so intimidated by the thought of God and death. I have always dealt with this feeling of derealization, like I am unreal in this life, but at the same time, a familiarity with the world. I feel a deep connection with the past, particularly with the 1800s-1900s. Despite this, I am unsure of how many lives my soul may have lived. I have not had the privilege of experiencing past life regression therapy. I am not sure whether to trust it, though I have felt drawn to it since I have learned of its existence. I have been afraid of falling subject to scams, so I’ve avoided many therapists and fortune tellers. I once heard a woman a couple years ago in a restaurant talking about her past life she learned about through a therapy session but couldn’t make too many words out. Still, I was shocked and felt envious of her experience, wishing I could learn about my past life/lives. This was much after I’d first learned about past life regression therapy.
I’ve been fascinated with the whole concept of reincarnation since a young child and was told by my mother and some others I was wise beyond my years. I picked up English fairly quickly. However, when I turned 17 or 18, I saw a picture in black and white of Stralsund, Germany. I recognized the fact that it was a picture in Germany though I was not educated about Germany in the past, nor hardly a single thing on world war 2. I somehow knew this picture was from Germany and it brought a very strange feeling to me deep down. From then on, I researched pictures and towns in Germany as well as the language. I found the language easier to learn than Spanish. I feel deeply connected to Germany. I’ve had various dreams of villages, and a certain church that included a cemetery, though I am not sure which country this is from. I looked in the mirror and suddenly thought of the name “Laura” and since then have felt that my past life name from a certain time was Laura. I feel a deep connection to church bells and the feeling of soft grass beneath my feet as well. I often have a restless sensation and a feeling that I am not truly home. It saddens me deeply. I’ve had many visions that I cannot explain, and was wondering if anyone could provide me with some insight. Anything.
Though I have adapted to many things within this time, I feel that my soul belongs elsewhere. I feel as though I am living behind a mask to become accepted and that it is not the real me. I have a set in stone belief that i want to be buried under the ground instead of cremated. I am very argumentative about it. I am fond of old fashioned poetry, fascinated by gothic gravestones, and gothic architecture. I long to be one with the earth and have written poems about it. I’ve cried when thinking about reincarnation and things from the 1800s-1900s. I don’t feel new to this earth but at the time feel clueless about so many things in this century. I feel so much anxiety that never seems to leave my side. It is the most loyal companion I’ve had since I was born. I was unfortunately born with anxiety that has held me back immensely from discovering so many things about myself, including this aspect. I have considered myself a complex individual with an old soul for many years, and am unsure of what to do about it??
I wonder constantly if someone has ever felt a similar way. I feel that I’ll never find a soul that understands what I’m going though, and I am sick of feeling alone in this cold world.

2024.05.10 01:14 quentin_taranturtle Why were western writer specifically attracted to the communist party?

I recently read Richard Wright’s autobiography which dealt in part with his tumultuous time as a member of a U.S. communist group in the 1930’s. I also read a number of Orwell’s essays written shortly after the Spanish civil war in which he discusses the ideology. One thing Orwell brought up that I thought was interesting (partly quoted below) was the pervasive self-censorship by communist western writers during that time. Makes sense - nearly all US/UK communist parties were more or less emulating USSR standards.
Among the many issues Wright encountered while he was a member was the constant peer pressure to censor not just what he said in official writings (eg for their magazine), but also his own work. If any party member stepped out of line (or was even perceived to have - which was troublesome due to how much paranoia raged throughout the group) all sorts of bullying tactics were use. Such as expelling, threatening, shunning, attempting to get former members fired at their job, assaulting them on the streets, or worst of all being called a Trotsky-isk (it’s like being called a mix of Benedict Arnold, Hitler, and a 5 month old puppy that a spoiled child has grown bored of)
This censorship counters something I have noticed is more common in writers/artists than the average person - the desire for freedom of expression. what about the movement was appealing enough for writers to fight for something that denies this? (and perhaps huge portion of the entire literary canon)
But the core question is this: what caused writers / artists to be drawn to communism at higher rates than most other professions?
Most often when reading the work of those actively in favor, they talk earnestly of social and economic equality for all. But if that was truly their primary end goal, socialism alone seems more closely to align with it without the need for censorship. Furthermore, socialism was a moderately prevalent & established ideology at the turn of the 20th century (and had a number of notable writers gaining success releasing works with overarching socialist themes - eg Upton Sinclair & Jack London & Orwell). Was it just seen as old hat (too slow, ineffective) at that point? Or is the focus on the employed lower class just not personally applicable enough for an artist fortunate enough to survive on the profit of their art?
A while ago I read an essay by Chomsky in which he quoted a bit by either Marx or Engels indicating that the ideology has always hinted at a sort of aristocratic literati. Was this what really brought so many writers in (more than fixing economic inequality issues already addressed by socialism)? Sure, the revolution theoretically frees the workers & disposed of great economic inequality, but ( better yet) with our artistic skills we will be reserved a special place right at the foot of the ideological ruler’s throne! Who cares if it’s as jester or propagandist, we will still find ourselves comfortably sat near the table of power. not in the fields toiling, but amongst the intellectual elites. They can see through the propaganda.
(This brings to mind an article by a journalist stuck in an air conditioned hotel somewhere like Qatar with a bunch of other journalists during the Iraq war c. 2003. Every day they would come out to watch a news conference by a low ranking general who never appeared to know anything nor have any updates. The part that irked me was when the journalist wrote that every journalist in that room was rolling their eyes & joking about the bullshit waste of time… yet the journalists continued writing up & sending out the regurgitated bullshit en masse, acting like they were getting break news & the US people were being informed of it.
The journalists all know they’re being toyed with, so if those people who read the trickle down news conference updates and believed anything but the same - they were contemptuously stupid & deserve their own eye roll, no doubt.
Completely ignoring another option entirely - don’t carry on with the charade of being a government mouth piece… the press could print meaningful journalism or push real questions to the 1 star or call them out on the obfuscation [who else could? Only media allowed]. No, just an eye roll and jokes amongst themselves while they continue to perfectly fulfill their place as the apparatchiks, but at least they know it’s a farce.)
too pessimistic?
Orwell:
On the whole the literary history of the thirties seems to justify the opinion that a writer does well to keep out of politics. For any writer who accepts or partially accepts the discipline of a political party is sooner or later faced with the alternative: toe the line, or shut up. It is, of course, possible to toe the line and go on writing—after a fashion. […] Literature as we know it is an individual thing, demanding mental honesty and a minimum of censorship.
The atmosphere of orthodoxy is always damaging to prose, and above all it is completely ruinous to the novel, the most anarchical of all forms of literature. […] it is a product of the free mind, of the autonomous individual. No decade in the past hundred and fifty years has been so barren of imaginative prose as the nineteen-thirties. There have been good poems, good sociological works, brilliant pamphlets, but practically no fiction of any value at all. From 1933 onwards the mental climate was increasingly against it. Anyone sensitive enough to be touched by the Zeitgeist was also involved in politics. Not everyone, of course, was definitely in the political racket, but practically everyone was on its periphery and more or less mixed up in propaganda campaigns and squalid controversies. Communists and near-Communists had a disproportionately large influence in the literary reviews. It was a time of labels, slogans, and evasions. At the worst moments you were expected to lock yourself up in a constipating little cage of lies; at the best a sort of voluntary censorship ('Ought I to say this? Is it pro-Fascist?') was at work in nearly everyone's mind.
It is almost inconceivable that good novels should be written in such an atmosphere. 'Good novels are not written by by orthodoxy-sniffers, nor by people who are conscience-stricken about their own unorthodoxy. Good novels are written by people who are not frightened.

2024.05.09 15:39 lenkabuben AITH for helping my grandfather

First time posting. I'll try to keep it short but include necessary details. My parents, sister and I were estranged from my grandfather and his wife for 30 years. Little back story, he wasn't exactly a great dad to my mom, she never had a good relationship with him and he left when she was around 12. We are from Czechoslovakia and when the Russians invaded my grandfather left with his second wife to move to Canada. My mom got married young, had my sister and me and when I was 2 they decided to leave as well and the one good thing my grandfather did was help us come to Canada, something I have always been grateful for. He was in our lives when I was little, though he openly favoured my sister (he admits to it now, though he can't remember why). She was older, stronger, faster, while I was quiet and shy and sleepy. We were good kids, normal, typical, active. But his home never felt welcoming. Not warm and safe like a grandparents home should. Looking back, he was a very selfish man. My mom also says she could never rely on him, he wasn't there like a dad should be though she desperately wanted a dad. I give them both grace though, as I learned of their lives. He was born in Spain and when he was little his family had to leave due to the Spanish civil war. Then when in Brno the Nazis came and life got really tough. His sister died as a teenager followed shortly by his mother. My great grandfather was brutal and beat him severely and the threat of death was always there from the Germans, along with hunger. It was a very difficult life. I don't know how difficult his wife's life was, but she did lose a child very suddenly when the girl was 11 or so and that must have broken her. Perhaps she treated us the way she did partially cause of that trauma. I don't know. When I was about 12 and I visited them as I did regularly at that time, I told them a poem I learned at school and they got offended by it. I have no clue, I don't remember. They demanded an apology. My parents were like what the hell for? And we didn't speak for 30 years. Crazy I know. I saw him a few times in that time, once for a funeral as a teenager. He never called, never expressed interest in seeing me or my sister. Since then we grew up, I ended up having a daughter in my 20s, raising her alone, life goes on. About 8 years ago I reached out to him, just to see and I think cause his wife was developing dementia and his life was chaos he expressed no interest. So I gave up. But then 3 years ago I decided what the hell, the man is very old, I don't want regrets, his wife is in long term care and he's alone. I'll try one last time. And he was very glad. We've been in contact ever since. I visit him regularly and as time goes on and he needs more help I've been trying to help him more and more. I have POA, he doesn't like to ask for help so he usually ends up on the floor and I have to call 911 and then he accepts it. Our relationship has grown, he likes our discussions, we discuss history and our lives, I'm the only person he gets to speak Czech with. He's now 92 and it's really showing. He's ended up in the hospital twice this year. I've been trying very hard to arrange help for him, care while he's home, lots and lots of things going on, reaching out to whoever I can since I can't see him daily. I work full time and literally can't. This week has been particularly difficult since he's in hospital so I'm dealing with all that stuff, my mom needs extra help from me since my dad is away for a few weeks and she's post surgery, I have to be there for my daughter who has some mental health struggles of her own, plus I have all the normal work and life stuff. I'm stretched super thin and exhausted. I'm trying my best to fulfill my grandfather's wishes. Not mine.
When I called the ambulance last week his neighbour who sometimes checks on him came by. She offered to check on him daily if he needed and expressed concerned. I've spoken to her only a few times over the past few years. They were pleasant and short conversations. She took my number when the paramedics were at the house. I texted her how he was doing and then asked if she was willing and able to check on him, she has no obligation but that I needed to figure out everything before he was sent home from the hospital. She never responded. I was arranging for someone to come clean his house since its frankly gross (he kinda soiled himself before he fell) and at his age he just wasn't managing the way he should. No clutter or anything too bad, he just doesn't see certain things and he needed new bedsheets and a bunch of stuff. So I arranged for that but I needed the cleaner to have a key to the house. So I asked that she return the spare key she has. She responded that she will only return it if my grandfather asks for it back. Then an hour later texted that I'm a terrible person, where have I been, my texts to her were rude and I only want his house and money, that she knows all about me and she's blocking me and to never contact her again. I'm happy to share screen shots of the conversation but going over it I don't see where I was rude. It really threw me off cause I've been trying so hard to arrange help. Yes I'm inheriting the house. But that's what HE wants. I would help him either way. He is big on family legacy and he wants the house to stay within the family. My mother wants nothing to do with him and my sister doesn't really talk to anyone in the family. That literally leaves just me (his wife has no living family and all their friends are dead). I've never been motivated by money. I know many people do take advantage of their elderly relatives for inheritance. It's always disgusted me and I make sure to check myself to ensure my intentions are good. But now my future neighbour hates my guts, thinks I'm a gold digging awful person. I think cause I'm stretched thin, exhausted and trying my very best her comments really hurt. I don't think I deserve them, she's never tried to get to know me and knows nothing about what my family has been through over the past 30 years or why I wasn't in his life all that time. I was a child, I had no say when we stopped talking. He could have reached out and has thanked me for calling him, admitting he had to much pride to pick up the phone and do the same. Sorry, this is longer than I wanted. Thanks.
