2024.05.21 21:17 Average_orange Preventing browning?

Is there anyway to prevent oxidization when making cider so it can keep its original color? Iā€™m making a green apple cider and it had a really pleasant green color which was lost almost immediately after being crushed and itā€™s now a very offputting greenish brown.

2024.05.21 20:39 BackdoorBacon1 Looking for Luna Grill Pomegranate dressing copycat.

Iā€™m obsessed with the apple walnut salad from my local Luna Grill. Iā€™ve been trying to approximate the pomegranate vinaigrette dressing that comes with it. Itā€™s a brown and tangy dressing. Interestingly enough, Luna grill lists a recipe for the apple walnut salad (including dressing) on their website, which I followed to the T. The recipe listed on their site is not even close to the store. The color is reddish purple and the taste is nowhere near the same. For reference the link is here https://lunagrill.com/recipe/apple-walnut-salad/
Based off my previous failed attempts I suspect pomegranate molasses, sugar or honey and vinegar or lemon juice are the key ingredients.
Has as anyone got any insights?

2024.05.21 18:45 supermegameat Second Ever Brew: What the Heck is Happening???

So maybe two weeks ago I did my first ever hooch - a simple cider. I took apple juice from the store, put a packet of yeast into it, stuck a bubbler on top of it, waited about 5 days and viola! I had alcohol.
Emboldened, I quickly set out to one-up myself, this time trying to alcohol-ify a bottle of Arizona Iced Tea. I made sure that the bottle had real sugar and no preservatives and then did the same steps as above, only using a bit less yeast than a full packet. However, this time its been very different. For a full day there seemed to be no activity at all. The second day then had a good amount and things seemed to be on track. I was away for the weekend, and then when I came back it seemed to be right back to doing nothing. There have been no bubbles basically whatsoever from the bubbler since then - stopping basically only three days after I first put the yeast in.
Is it done that quick??? Or is it still going but for some reason the carbon dioxide is unable to escape through the bubbler? Here is a picture of the overall setup. There seems to be a good amount of stuff at the top that maybe is blocking carbon? Also, when I look closely I can see little tiny bubbles inside the main body of the liquid racing upwards, seen faintly here and here, you can just about make out the bubbles. If I gently squeeze the bottle a good amount of bubbles escape through the bubbler. And if it is still going, how will I know when it's done?
TL;DR: is it done after three days, or can there still be carbon escaping and yeast doing stuff even without the bubbler bubbling?

Naughty & Nice Apple Habanero Sauce
I like to call this my naughty and nice sauce because the aroma of the apple and cinnamon is so delicious and sweet but the amount of habanero I add in is definitely naughty! 10/10
What would you use it for? Marinade, thin it out for a dipping sauce, bbq glaze, appetizer hot sauce to get things started strongā€¦.Call me crazy, but a spoonful added to a margarita is actually pretty fire!
Kelleyā€™s Apple Habanero Sauce - 5 medium apples (I used gala) - 12 good sized habanero - Splash of Apple cider vinegar here and there - cinnamon - pinch of salt - peppercorn
*use whatever spices you want depending on flavor profile you want to achieve

2024.05.21 17:30 aiaor How common is it for an apartment to have both fruit flies and drain flies but no other insects?

I get the vague impression they're coming from other apartments, because I've taken a lot of measures to get rid of them, but they keep coming back. But how common is this? No ants, no roaches, no houseflies, nothing but fruit flies and drain flies. It seems unusual to me because when a place is infested with different kinds of insects, it's usually a lot of different kinds.
I identify them by their behavior. The fruit flies are attracted to fruit and to apple cider vinegar. The drain flies aren't attracted to those. The drains are shared with apartments on other floors. I leave them covered, but, sometimes, when I forget to cover them, tiny/baby drainflies appear. I also sometimes run lots of very hot water down the drain, hoping to get rid of the drainflies.
Adult fruit flies and/or drain flies seem to appear out of nowhere. As if they somehow come from other apartments, thru unseen holes in the walls.
I used a lot of "Raid Essentials Fly Gnat Mosquito" spray, and that got rid of a lot of them. I got rid of everything fruit flies would be attracted to, except some traps I made with apple cider vinegar.

2024.05.21 16:17 youngboybrokeagaain Nothing works for my hair

Hey everybody, I'm posting here because I want advice on how to deal with my hair. I have short (not touching my forehead yet), 3b-3c, coarse, high porosity hair that has refused to work with me for what feels like a long time now. I've tried products with and without silicone as well as glycerin, leave in conditioners, creams, base and topper gels (including gel only wash and goes), mousses, moisturizing and regular shampoos, hair oils, clarifying (although I haven't done this in maybe 2 or 3 weeks), deep conditioners and regular conditioners, protein treatments (specifically SheaMoisture and Aphogee), refreshing, sleeping with a bonnet, various methods of applying products (scrunching, raking, prayer hands finger coiling, brush styling), diffusing, and I've done pretty much everything you can think of. Despite all of this my hair feels almost too soft as if there is zero product in it and is visibly frizzy. Some parts are noticably limp and flat and my hair overall just looks and feels dry. I was sure a protein treatment would help but it didn't. I'm concerned that it might be hard water buildup but my areas water content doesn't seem to have that problem (49.0 ppm, 2.9 gpg).
I buzzed my hair almost 1 year ago and have been growing it out ever since (haven't gotten a trim). I also understand I may have to incorporate more protein in my hair routine due to my hair being higher in porosity (it's not chemically damaged, I haven't gotten my hair chemically treated ever)
For those curious, these are the products I've recently used on wash day:
Shampoo
-AG Care Balance Apple Cider Vinegar Sulfate-Free Shampoo
Protein Treatment
-Aphogee Two-step Treatment Protein for Damaged Hair
Conditioner
-PATTERN Beauty by Tracee Ellis Ross Medium Conditioner
-Mielle Rosemary Mint Strenthening Masque
-Aphogee Balancing Moisturizer
Styling
-African Pride Moisture Miracle Leave in Cream
-Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic Curl Stimulator
-Innersense I Create Hold Styling Gel
Important to note I have yet to get advice from a professional hair stylist, I don't have the money to get consultation at the moment.
That pretty much sums everything up, to anyone willing to extend advice, it is much appreciated! Feel free to ask questions.

2024.05.21 15:26 LocalBiDisaster Tested first category: fructose. Symptoms. Now what?

Hey all, I posted here before that I was excited to start reintroduction after finally starting to feel better 2 weeks into low FODMAP elimination phaseā€”only to screw it up. I ate a Japanese ginger salad dressing at a sushi restaurant that may have contained garlic, onion, honey, and/or celery, and was violently nauseous/vomited the next morning, but not sure which ingredient was the culprit.
It took days to stop waking up nauseous but yesterday I woke up feeling like the healthiest person alive, so I did the first reintroduction testā€”fructoseā€”with 1 teaspoon of honey in my breakfast oatmeal, to be doubled and then tripled on subsequent days. It sat fine. Breakfast was delicious. I had a normal active appetite all day.
I ate an unaltered low FODMAP meal from Modify Health for lunch, and a low-FODMAP Chipotle bowl (that Iā€™ve eaten throughout elimination without issues) and a Mexican coke (no fructose) for dinner. A little after dinner, my stomach started LOUDLY making bizarre rumbling and churning noises, I started burping a lot, I blamed the carbonated beverage, took a gas pill, and went to bed.
This morning? The second I opened my eyes, nausea, urgent bowel movement, weird churning, smelly farts, no appetite. Thankfully I have zofran and I think it headed off the need to throw up.
What do I do now? Presumably, this means excess fructose is one of the culprits for my IBS. This would actually track because several of the times I've been sick recently were the morning after: 1. an extremely sweet cider alcohol 2. the same meals I'd eaten for days no problem, but more asparagus on the day before sick (very high in fructose) 3. that salad dressing that likely had honey in it
I guess stop reintroducing fructose, wait for my symptoms to subside (at least 3 days,) then test the next category?
Once I am done with all the tests, how can I avoid excess fructose in my regular diet?
Is this the end of me loving fruits like apples and watermelon? Is there any kind of enzyme I could take to still be able to eat fructose sometimes, like how I already know Lactaid helps my lactose intolerance within reason?
Iā€™m relieved I may finally be finding some answers, but damn, sick after the first day of the first test?! I used to be able to eat fucking Taco Bell and feel nothing. šŸ˜

2024.05.21 15:00 Knowing_Eve What next? Random yellow stool

In 2012 I suddenly out of nowhere started having severe gallbladder attacks (I didnā€™t know what they were though, I was a young adult and never had the pain before) to the point I couldnā€™t eat or stand straight. Then my eyes turned yellow and my urine was bright yellow, stools were white clay colour. The pain was so much that I got taken to hospital and they ran tests and admitted me because I was apparently severely dehydrated (despite drinking enough and eating enough) and my liver was on the verge of failing (their words). I was in hospital for a week. They did an ultrasound on day 4 (they waited this long because apparently they didnā€™t suspect gallbladder issues due to my age - they were testing me for hepatitis and aids instead.. obviously came back negative). The ultrasound showed nothing, so they said that they suspect gallstones but assume Iā€™ve passed them now.
Left hospital.. stools were yellow off and on for months. Pain was intermittent for months. Iā€™d have mini attacks. Had an ultrasound 4 months after the event and it shows some stones.
Issues seemed to go away.
Through the years since 2012 Iā€™ve had the occasional ā€˜gallbladder liverā€™ ā€˜acheā€™ sensation in the correct region. Usually after Iā€™d eaten things high in omegas or very oily fatty things. But it was once in a blue moon that it would happen, and Iā€™d take apple cider vinegar and it would resolve the ache very quickly. So it wasnā€™t really a ā€˜botherā€™.
Recently however Iā€™ve been having intermittent and random digestive issues.. my gut will start bubbling and feel weird and then Iā€™ll go to the bathroom and my bowel movement will be super loose or diarrhoea, usually bright yellow. Iā€™ve not noticed anything that actually triggers this, it just happens. The rest of the time my bowel movements are totally normal.
For about 1-2 years now, the upper section of my stomach has been distended/bloated/tight feeling. Sometimes I have to stand up because when I sit down I feel slightly breathless. Not sure if this is linked but I thought I would mention it.
Every time theyā€™ve done blood work it shows my liver enzymes are normal.
Iā€™m in the UK. What do you suggest I do?
I donā€™t drink, smoke, take any substances, etc. so Iā€™m not sure why itā€™s happening to me?
Other symptoms are: Acne especially on my shoulders and back, often on my chin too. Adrenaline rushes for no reason. Tachycardia. Random nausea. Sometimes lots of belching or gas for no obvious reason but some food must have triggered it. Canā€™t eat mayo without feeling crap afterwards and my digestion being weird.
To add - I donā€™t feel any pain or discomfort at all when I get these digestive issues and stool issues..

Testing my pie recipe for an upcoming baking competition
If anyone can give me any tips to improve my pie and also make the filling less liquidy and bottom fully cooked, Iā€™ll love you forever and ever
Ingredients
(Crust) 320 grams of AP flour 16 tablespoons unsalted butter 2/3 ice cold water 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 5 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons salt
(Filling) 1 can blueberry pie filling 170 grams of fresh blackberries 6 tablespoons sugar
To start with the crust, Mix dry ingredients first in a bowl, and then toss in 16 tablespoons of cold cold butter, and squish between fingers into ā€œplanksā€ while in the flour. Add your apple cider vinegar in your ice cold water, then slowly stream water into your flour, and mix until barely combined
Then throw your mixture on your work surface, patting and folding until barely combined, then wrap in plastic wrap, and let chill in the fridge for 2-4 hours
Remove dough ball from fridge and roll out into a rectangular shape about 8 by 10 and then fold dough in half. Then turn down clockwise and roll out again into Rectangular shape, and then fold again. Repeat 3 times (laminate dough). Then cut dough in half and separate into two double squares, wrap in plastic wrap and chill in fridge overnight.
Next morning roll our first dough ball thinly , enough to cover pie pan. Add first layer of dough in pie pan, and put pie pan in the freezer while you work on your filling
In a separate bowl mix all your filling ingredients and then put bowl in fridge while you work on your next dough ball
Roll our second dough ball thinly and then with a pizza cutter, cut into evenly wide strips for lattice.
Remove pie pan from freezer, add filling into pie pan, lattice your pie with the cut strips. Egg wash and top with course sugar.
Put into oven at 425 degrees for 24 minutes and then lower oven to 400 for another 30-40 minutes

I recently tried the Rose Cottage 12Packs Floral Hanging Potpourri Bags in my home and was pleasantly surprised by the unique blend of scents. What stood out to me was how these natural air fresheners truly lived up to their promise of lasting for months. The large size sachets were perfect for tackling the smell in my closet, and even better, they worked well as a shoe odor eliminator too!
One of the things I appreciated about these fragrances was that they were made with essential oils created by French professional perfumers. The combination of these scents, along with the Japanese paper packaging, truly made for an incredible and long-lasting fragrance experience.
I also found that the large size sachets were more suitable for bigger spaces, as their fragrance did tend to dissipate a bit faster in smaller areas. Nevertheless, if you place multiple sachets strategically around your space, you'll still enjoy the pleasant scent.
Overall, the Rose Cottage air fresheners were a welcomed addition to my home, providing a natural and long-lasting solution to freshen up the air. Not to mention, the beautiful designs made them great as gifts for friends and family!

In my daily life, I've come to rely on these SKPPC closet air fresheners as a simple yet effective solution for maintaining a pleasant scent throughout my home. These flower-scented sachets, available in a pack of 15, are perfect for freshening up drawers, closets, and even suitcases. The long-lasting fragrance can last for up to two months, making them a convenient and cost-effective choice.
One of the features that stood out to me is their versatility. You can place these air fresheners in various spaces to fill your life with sweet aromas, keeping you in a good mood all day long. Whether it's in drawers, closets, suitcases, or handbags, these sachets have got you covered.
However, there's a catch: these sachets need to be stored in a closed space, away from direct sunlight, to preserve the aroma. It took me a while to figure out the best way to store them, but once I did, the scent lasted much longer. Additionally, it's essential to open the package when you first use the sachets, as leaving them unopened can cause the aroma to fade over time.
Although some users have reported issues with the scent strength, I've found that these closet air fresheners are a great gift idea. Their sweet aroma can brighten someone's day and make a lovely present for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or even mother's day. To get the most out of these sachets, gently shake them to encourage diffusion and enjoy the long-lasting, delightful fragrance they provide.

Recently, I started using Arm & Hammer Odor Busterz Deodorizer for my household and found them to be quite versatile. The natural strength of baking soda in these deodorizers makes it effective in various small spaces.
What stood out to me is the unique perforation in the deodorizer balls, which allows for maximum odor elimination right at the spot. The sachet filled with baking soda and Arm & Hammer's clean burst scent works wonderfully to eliminate odors for up to 60 days and keeps the freshness intact.
One noticeable downside, though, is that the fragrance may be too strong for certain rooms, like kitchens or bathrooms. The scent might even make your dishes or medicine smell and taste odd.
Overall, I've found these deodorizers to be quite efficient in eliminating odors in small areas. It's just essential to be cautious about using them in highly fragrance-sensitive spaces or if you prefer a lighter scent.

The scent itself is a lovely, calming lavender, perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere. The airfreshener works continuously, and I appreciate the absence of any harsh chemicals. But be mindful, once the gel has evaporated, you'll need to replace the product to maintain its effectiveness. Overall, it's a reliable and eco-friendly option for keeping your closet fresh and fragrant.

I've been using the Owevvin scented sachets for a while now, and let me tell you, they're a game-changer! I recently received this pack of sachets as a gift, and I must say, I'm quite impressed.
One of the things that stood out to me is the simplicity of their design. The sachets are lightweight and easy to use, making them perfect for filling up drawers and closets with a delightful scent. They also come in a variety of scents, so you can choose the one that suits your taste buds the best.
Now, let's talk about the packaging. Owevvin sachets come in a resealable bag, making it easy to store and reuse. The hook design on each sachet is a nice touch too, as it makes it convenient to hang them in multiple spaces.
Of course, no product is perfect, and the Owevvin scented sachets are no exception. The scent can sometimes be a little overpowering, so I suggest using them in moderation to prevent your space from smelling too strongly.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with my experience using these scented sachets. They're perfect for a quick pick-me-up or as a thoughtful gift for friends during special occasions. With their long-lasting effect and easy-to-use design, I highly recommend giving Owevvin scented sachets a try!

I recently tried out Professor Killamoth's Cedar Chips and Lavender Sachets, and I have to say, they were a game-changer for my wardrobe. The pack of 20 sachets was perfect, as it allowed me to easily place them in various parts of my closet without feeling overwhelmed.
I was particularly impressed by the long-lasting fragrance these sachets emanated. The combination of premium cedar and lavender truly created a delightful aroma that filled my closet. It was like walking into a little oasis of freshness every time I opened the door.
However, I did notice that the sachets had a tendency to detach from their hangers when I opened the closet. A small piece of double-sided tape would have been a helpful addition to the package to secure them better.
Overall, I'm a big fan of these Cedar Chips and Lavender Sachets. They've not only helped to keep my clothes smelling fresh but also added a touch of luxury to my wardrobe. I highly recommend them for anyone looking to revitalize their closet and enjoy a pleasant fragrance with every wear.

I've been using MYARO's Gardenia Scented Sachets for quite some time now, and I must say, they've definitely made a difference in my daily life. These sachets are infused with natural fragrance and are perfect for freshening up various spaces around the house. They're great for drawers, closets, and even gym bags - any place where you want a pleasant scent to linger.
One thing that stood out to me was the packaging. Each sachet comes individually sealed in a poly-bag, ensuring that the fragrance remains fresh for as long as possible. This attention to detail is something that I truly appreciate.
However, there were a few cons as well. Some users mentioned that the scents didn't last as long as they hoped, and that they had to use multiple sachets to get the desired effect. Additionally, a couple of reviewers experienced issues with the delivery and customer service.
Despite these minor setbacks, I've found MYARO's scented sachets to be a reliable and pleasant addition to my household. They've definitely made my drawers and closets smell fresher, and for that, I'm grateful.

I recently fell in love with the Good Home Co Closet and Drawer Sachets in lavender scent. These biodegradable sachets are not only gentle on the environment but also on our skin. They're free from parabens, phosphates, sulfates, and phthalates, and being 100% vegan and cruelty-free adds to their appeal.
However, their durability leaves a bit to be desired. They don't last very long, be it in my closet or drawer. It's almost like using the lavender sachets as dryer sheets - now that's an idea!
Despite this slight drawback, I still enjoy using these lovely fragranced beads tucked away in soft, beautiful fabric sachets. They add a sense of tranquility and freshness to any space they're placed in.

The smell of fresh, dried rosemary filled my closet, transforming it from a dusty corner to a welcoming haven. The vibrant color of the sachets is a plus, adding a touch of elegance to my drawers and closets.

While I can't say I've used these as a gift yet, they've certainly become a favorite of mine for personal home use. Every time I open my closet, the smell of rosemary takes me to a place of calm and relaxation. Overall, it's a small luxury that has made a big difference in my daily life.

In my quest for a fragrance-free deodorizer that could tackle my musty closet, I stumbled upon the airBOSS Closet Odor Neutralizing Gel. It's no secret that our closets hold some of our most beloved belongings, but they often harbor some less-than-lovely smells as well. This product promised to tackle the odor from mold, mildew, tobacco, perspiration, and even shoes, and with a time frame of up to 4 months, I was intrigued to say the least.
Upon opening the container, I was immediately greeted by the neutral scent, which was a pleasant surprise. It's a welcome change from the overwhelming fragrances that some deodorizers come with. The gel was thick, but applied easily to the corners of my closet. I was eager to see if it could live up to the hype.
The airBOSS Closet Odor Neutralizing Gel worked wonders on my closet. It absorbed the musty odor that had been lingering for months, leaving behind a fresh scent. However, it was a bit of a bulky package, as I received it in a plastic jar instead of the style shown in the picture. Overall, the airBOSS Closet Odor Neutralizing Gel did its job and neutralized the odor in my closet. The fragrance-free aspect was a plus and the gel lasted for months, making it a worthwhile investment. But the extra bulk in packaging was a bit of a downer. I recently tried out the Renuzit Pure Breeze Pet Air Fresheners, and I must say, they really did a great job in keeping my home smelling fresh and clean. These cones are perfect for small spaces like bathrooms and closets, and they released a pleasant scent that was just the right balance between fresh and subtle.
One thing that really stood out to me was their adjustable fragrance levels. I could easily control the intensity of the scent, which was perfect for my preference. Additionally, these cones are easy to use - just turn them upside down when they run out of fragrance, and it's effortless to see when they need to be replaced.
However, I've noticed that their scent tends to weaken over time. It used to last up to three weeks, but now it doesn't even last three days. I would've appreciated if it lasted longer, as it would mean fewer replacements and more savings.
Still, I recommend the Renuzit Pure Breeze Pet Air Fresheners to anyone looking for a simple yet effective way to keep their home smelling fresh. They're affordable and easy to use, plus they help control odors without overpowering the room with an overwhelming scent.

A quality air freshener in your closet works to neutralize bad odors and contribute to a healthier living environment. However, with a broad array of options available in the market, selecting the most suitable closet air freshener can be a bit daunting. Odor Neutralization Capacity

These materials are eco-friendly and safe for use in closed spaces, ensuring that the air in your closet stays fresh and pleasant.

Room Size and Duration of Refresh

Closet air fresheners work best when their coverage matches the size of the room where they are placed. Therefore, it's essential to consider the volume of your closet space and ensure that the chosen air freshener can effectively cover the area. Also, pay attention to the package information and find out how long the air freshener releases a pleasant scent. Also, consider whether you prefer a refillable or disposable air freshener, depending on your preference and convenience.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Choices

Staying eco-conscious is an important aspect for many buyers during the purchasing process. When choosing a closet air freshener, look for products that are planet-friendly and contain biodegradable ingredients. Additionally, opt for a recyclable or reusable container so that your purchase not only freshens up your closet but also contributes to a cleaner and healthier planet.
By taking the factors mentioned into consideration, you will be able to find the perfect closet air freshener to keep your space fresh, odor-free, and inviting. 2024.05.21 06:32 Candid_Sandwich9193 doggy rash

my dog has seasonal allergies, in past years it has only shown as sneezing. for the past week she has developed a rash on her belly/groin that seems to becoming more bothersome. I have been giving her half a benadryl and putting apple cider vinegar mixed with water on the rash and it briefly helps her. tonight i woke up to her licking and nibbing on her groin and aggressively panting. i gave her a half benadryl and the ACV mix- which calmed the rash a bit, but she was still panting and extremely uncomfortable. i gave her the other half of the benadryl and she is now sleeping comfortably. over the last 3 days she has not been eating normally and is not using the potty like she normally does. what can i do to help her? I am planning to take her to the vet in the morning, but anything i can do to keep her comfortable through the night as the benadryl doesnā€™t last for long with her.

2024.05.21 04:17 joshportunities Replicating French/Norman cider

Iā€™m trying to plan out my next batches of homebrew, and something I really want to try to make is a French-style cider. Etienne Dupontā€™s Cidre BouchĆ© Brut de Normandie is my main point of reference ā€“ something complex, more tannic than acidic, nicely carbonated in the bottle but still lightly sweet without being cloying or tasting artificial (via erythritol or the like). It is super different from American ciders and anything Iā€™ve ever made.
Does anyone have experience making this style of cider or advice to give? I know that it partly comes down to the types of apples they use ā€“ I donā€™t know how or if I can get proper cider apples in the Midwest, so I think Iā€™m limited to the apples and juice I have and making adjustments to the tannins and acids in the must ā€“ and partly to keeving and French/Norman cidermaking practices in general. Iā€™ve found lots of resources online that describe keeving very generally, and one that goes into depth (http://www.cider.org.uk/keeving.html) but which Iā€™m getting lost in and not confident following and replicating perfectly.
