Today’s one page challenge is for The City in the Clouds by J.B. Williams. Finally, a requested challenge, rather than the usual cycle of me finding a story and the person being triggered that I did so. At 234 pages and a whopping price tag of $20.99 for a paperback, it’s a wonder why it looks untouched. Flip some burgers for an hour to pay for this… whatever it is. I was told the editor is good, so let’s see how he gummed up the works.
The rules of the one page challenge are simple: I go through the first page of the book(about 300 words or 3 paragraphs) and say where the average reader would stop. These reviews are short, sweet, and to the point (unlike most of these books). The main things we look for are things like tension, a hint at the plot existing, good feng shui, a feeling like the blurb is accurate, a lack of obfuscation, and the story fulfilling its role as a story. As we go along, I’ll explain why readers love or hate certain elements and we’ll see what straws break the camel’s back.
The title, The City in the Clouds, makes me think of fantasy, but it’s meant to be sci-fi. Clouds symbolize knowledge beyond our reach or something like daydreaming, treated as water in air(mystery in knowledge). Saying the title this way makes it seem like the focus is the city itself, which would be cool if it was something like a dystopian or utopian story. Maybe a tech noir or detective story, but… it’s not. This story is actually about a woman, and it’s a comedy, completely conflicting with the genre in two ways.
I didn’t want to say this but Huston… we’re already having problems.
The ebook cover is a drawing of curly haired woman staring at the camera like she’s constipated, while the paperback version is of an anime girl holding a gun and looking like she has diarrhea. Both versions have her in a suit, with a giant gas planet behind her. Both have similar fonts for the title and name, but the ebook version is so blurred and darkened that it reads like a secret message; the physical version being slightly less blurry. If I saw this on a shelf, I wouldn’t recognize this as a book or know what it was called. I find it strange because the back of the book is very clear, given a blue box for clarity, and has a sun with a red sky that would have made more sense than these frumpy women.
I guess the title and name are made illegible because we’re supposed to zoom our eyes straight to the blurb:
At this point, the average reader would probably not give it a shot, unless the idea of pirates and an ironic Die Hard premise is their cup of tea.
No prologue, no maps, no glossary, just a simple chapter 1 to greet us. Ok, I’m liking this already. I know this is a small thing, but the simplicity of just starting a story is a blessing that should be the norm, and isn’t. I haven’t read a single word and this is already the best OPC so far. Yes, it’s that easy.
Don’t ruin the experience with all your fancy try-hard nonsense and the reader will be in hog heaven.
We are told the planet, sector, system, and date. Very effective in establishing the sci-fi element in this single aside, which also lets us know it’s 400 years in the future. The planet is named Andromeda, which is a well known galaxy, so if this is in that galaxy, I assume it’s going for a “New York, New York” type of gag. The editor did a good job, with the first page establishing a scene in a restaurant. What he messed up on was… everything that’s not the scene itself, which makes up 90% of the words.
The protagonist, Robin Alia Brook has her day off described as “shot in the face”, being delivered in present tense and this has it come out awkwardly. I say this because the second sentence is past tense, then it shifts back to present, back to past. This is why people stick with past tense to avoid the headache, and present tense is now used as a hipster novelty to act as if things are more important because they’re happening as they’re written. Most readers just find it as a distraction and it causes something niche to become more niche in the process. The first paragraph ends with us being told that she’s in a restaurant that is 500 feet under the sea, of a planet called Andromeda.
She is to be dining, but she is NOT dining because her date didn’t show. Cue the audience gasping, because this is a travesty. The part that really kills this opening is the sentence “She is currently obtaining nutrients through Poseidon's generous supply of free lemons water and cheesy garlic biscuits.” This was the perfect chance for worldbuilding, to express something futuristic and fresh. Instead, it tied itself to Earth, talked about mundane food like lemon water, and it didn’t use any of these for a punchline.
This is meant to be a comedy, but is absent of comedy. We don’t need a bunch of humor in the first paragraph, but we do expect a comedy to present a tone that can lead to humor occurring. Every scene for a comedy is a setup for gags and punchlines. Much like horror, the scene is built around the mood, which is brought to a peak around half way. The introduction of a comedy book is going to hold a joke in relation to the entire book.
I believe the blurb when it says this Robin character can kill things by accident, because this book dies right after she’s introduced, around the second paragraph. The third paragraph changes the subject to be about other people in the restaurant, acting as a distraction that leads to infodumps of Robin’s outfit and such. I understand that the “joke” is that this woman is stood up on her date and we are to feel her anguish, but the reader shouldn’t be suffering through the opening this soon. Starting here is either far too late or far too soon. If anything, this is something I expect in chapter 2 or something we hear about as she’s on her way to Bellona.
A good way to put it is that this scene is a non-sequitur done in order to give fashion statements, with the important exposition ignored for window dressing.
The average reader needs tension to get sunk into a sci-fi story, because this is a planet we don’t know about with a character we’ve never seen before. What is the point of having this restaurant so deep underwater? There is a city underwater? She has a job, but where does she work? At the Krusty Krab?
Non-sequitur is a distraction that removes us from the scene and the plot to explain things that don’t serve a purpose to either. If I changed the first sentence to only hold what was part of the scene, it would be the characters name and nothing more. To strengthen an opening like this, we would have to set it up for a punchline, reinforce the sardonic tone, and tie the scene with the situation. The first sentence would go like:
For a story like this, the rejection comes from a lack of being straightforward. We can always fix up a sentence and how it sounds, but this doesn’t mean much when the bones are disjointed. Thankfully, for this one, a lot of readers are used to openings like this from online serials, so there is hope that a lot of it will get a pass. It’s that first hump that it has to get over in order to shine. Sadly, for little Robin, that hump was not achieved, so her journey through the city in the cloud might as well not exist.

Robin Alia Brook is considered a loser. She works at customer service for one of the largest companies in humanity's interstellar empire, gets stood up on dates, and accidentally kills people. Then when her ex-online boyfriend gives her the winning vacation lottery ticket to the famed habitat, The City of Clouds, she reluctantly accepts it.Slight grammar issues here and there, but most wouldn’t notice that “ex-online boyfriend” would mean the boyfriend was online and not anymore. The delivery is a little bouncy, almost appropriate, but doesn’t give much tone from how much info it tries to cram in. Something I noticed is that very little sci-fi is mentioned, with the only thing giving a sci-fi vibe being the idea of traveling to another planet. If this was a vacation to an island, very little would change from how it’s described. Like the title and name on the cover, a lot of what makes this book a book is hidden from us, in plain sight.
Upon arrival, she is greeted by the massive, beautiful gas giant Bellona, and all the glamour and prospects of expansion for the famous habitat. And it is the beginning of a celebration, too! For the election of the new habitat captain! But the celebration and vacation are ruined when pirates attack, seeking the captain's riches.
They are ruthless, they are bloodthirsty, and they won't stop until they get what they want. Unfortunately for the pirates, Robin is really good at accidentally killing people, and with her is a rag tag team of a pilot recruit, an egotistical journalist, a veteran photographer, and the captain himself.
It will be a long battle for The City of Clouds, and the outcome is unknown, but one thing is certain... This is the worst vacation ever.

Five hundred feet below the sea’s surface, Robin could not stop drinking.This will give the impression that she’s getting drunk, while attaching her drinking to the sea outside, giving the impression that she’s drowning. But even then, I wouldn’t start here, I would begin with a comedic amount of assurance that she’s going to have her date show up, then the next scene is her waiting with this. That, or I would have her doing the walk of shame, allowing the plot to begin sooner when she gets her golden ticket, which would be like:
The ocean floor outside was slowly swallowed by darkness as the elevator pod took Robin away from Poseidon.Here, we have a moment for her to think back to the situation, and the word “darkness” gives hint to her current feeling about the restaurant. This is a setup for the punchline that follows, already skipping the failed date and able to move forward to the poster she sees in the elevator. Movies tend to do this type of exposition with the main character telling the situation to another person, who is helpless to escape. That can add more humor and make the main character express their personality quirks. The goal is for less opening to be used up for non-sequitur and to focus it on moving forward in relation to the plot.

Hi all! (I tried posting this a few weeks back but when I attached pictures the body text no longer posted? Sorry I don’t post much.)
I’m in a condo. I plan to stay here a very long time, so I’m slowly remodeling and updating everything.
The current 2.5 bathrooms are all completely outfitted in polished chrome. I don’t hate it, in fact I like aspects of it. I find it classic, but perhaps a little cold. I’ve always loved polished nickel and oil-rubbed bronze. I’d probably go with polished nickel here if I were starting from a scratch.
(For context my condo is a 2002 transitional with Italianate touches in a large midwestern city. There are high ceilings, wide crown molding, a wrought iron railing on my balcony, etc. My style is similar: clean, classic, with both modern and more classic European vibes… nothing too fussy but plenty of personality.)
I’m starting with my guest bathroom and I need to choose a floor mounted tub filler NOW (not cheap). If I choose anything but chrome I need to switch out everything else. Even the darn flush lever. It feels like a lot. Budget is a consideration, but I mostly want to LOVE it (and not redo anything later).
Help?!? Any insight? Anyone been through this?

Its taken me a while to get to this review but I cannot recommend this tour company enough! Patrick and his team were the best tour guides I have ever had the pleasure of using. Patrick and his team made the planning easy, the process simple, and left us worry free every day for our tours. We did 3 tours with this outfit: cave tubing, ATM Cave, and Tikal. Every single experience was worth the money and time.
Cave tubing was spectacular, floating through a cave with our wonderful guide was surreal. She had answers to all my questions (which was surprising as a geology nerd) and was incredibly fun to hang out with.
ATM cave was unlike anything I have ever experienced. Patrick was incredibly knowledgeable and fun, answering all our questions we had come prepared with quickly and with ease. I learned so much more than I expected, whether it was about the Maya, the local flora and fauna (another area I nerd out on), or general questions about the area. Patrick brought us in early which was another bonus because as we were leaving the cave it was an insane traffic jam getting out. So thankful we had the cave mostly to ourselves as Patrick starts a lot earlier. An unforgettable and mind blowing experience. Seeing history like that is life changing and would not have been the experience it was without Patrick.
Finally, Tikal. We had done Caracol on our own a few days prior and listened to a walking tour podcast of the site in order to get a little more out of our exploration. Our minds were blown when our Tikal tour guide was the same one as the one we listened to on the podcast! Lion was absolutely incredible and went above and beyond what we would expect from another guide. From helping us through the Guatemalan border, taking us to his own bakery, helping me pick out a very special gift for my partners birthday, and packing snacks and drinks for our hike around Tikal (a life saver!), he made this day not only survivable but incredible. His depth of knowledge was incredible and due to his familiarity with the site, was able to show all the special areas and teach us about everything we wanted to learn.
Although the tours themselves were incredible, the real highlight of using Patrick'scompany for our 5 day stay in San Ignacio was really feeling like we got insight into the local culture, politics, and sentiment of the community. That alone was worth it. Every guide and driver we had was a local and you could tell that Patrick, Lion, and the rest of the team are incredibly tied into the community and passionate about their local area and helping it flourish. You can tell they all really care about giving back, from Lion's teachings of the maya hieroglyphs to local communities, Patrick's involvement with community projects, and everything else they do, their passion shines through.
I was never a tour kind of person, always choosing to self-explore but Patrick and his team has convinced me otherwise. Never before have I been immersed in the local culture so quickly or learned so much while traveling.

i want to create a turn based Fortnite game for fun, and I have a lot of blender assets to create the game ported from fortnite. Ideally, the game would be 3D and I would build the areas you can visit and enter (just a point and click interface) with some NPCs you can point and click on to talk to, kind of like a generic visual novel. I also wanted to have scenes and images that are rendered, like a small animation that is 5 seconds long of the players jumping out the battle bus when entering a dungeon to fight enemies in a more top down JRPG style. I'd like to make it so in these images or animations of the players jumping out the bus or whatever else, I can include every outfit variation (mostly just simple color swaps) for the characters so the players can choose different outfits in the game to wear and it would show in the scenes. The game is pretty simple in nature and uses mostly 3D assets from blender but I had a few questions.
I have no clue if I build the scenes and animations entirely in blender, as well as the 3d buildings/locations you can point and click on to enter, or do i just rig and add textures in blender and build all the levels and maps in Unity after. If I make a pre-rendered scene in blender can i just port that to Unity and still be able to do outfit swaps so you can customize the characters and it would show in the cutscenes, I think its called dynamic texture swapping for Unity? Can I do that for pre-rendered animations already rigged and texturized in blender with different material slots for the character's cloth swap?

I'm 19y/o. I would say Im a calm person, unless when im tired or when someone angers me. Im the balance between energetic and no energy person. I dont like sticking to one opinion because it feels like im limiting myself, so i guess im open minded. I dont really care about what people think of me unless its about my attitude or if i hurt someone unintentionally. i cant watch kdramas that r js typical, it feels so shallow and cringy. I also like psycho analyzing people. I also overanalyze someone's actions towards me. When i talk about a topic, i mostly talk the generality of it, but sometimes i think about every possible details which makes it hard to commit to one, for example: let’s say someone says you choose your own reality, in a way i get what they mean but i also think abt ppl who actually cant choose their reality. Drake and kendrick dissing each other, my brother asked me whose side im on, which i honestly dont give a crap, because its not connected to me neither i dont care who they are, feels insignificant to waste my brain cells on that thing. I also dont like rude people, like i get you have a painful past but that doesnt excuse how you treat me, i deserve to be treated like a normal human being. The line between right or wrong is kinda hard for me, i think theres no right or wrong in reality, its just based on people’s values and morals. Which ofc i do have.

i dont like selfish people, but at the same time in try to understand their angle so its kinda hard for me to js say wow shes so selfish bc there r so many perspectives spilling in my head that makes it hard to contribute to one (it happens always, but im working on it). I hate rooms without windows because it feels so uncomfy, mostly because i need to see the sky to live, if no sky then i feel trapped inside it

Hey,
I saw a video on how you can glitch a belt on your outfit and its very simple. Only 1 got problem, the outfit i want it on is a ripped outfit and was also glitched with basically the same steps. However when i equip the peach plate armor the tshirt just goes away and it shows only the bikini instead of them both merged into each other with the peach plate over them... Is this normal? Or is there a way on how to merge the belt on one of those outfits without it having to remove one of the clothing pieces?

The other day I was looking through my childhood drawings with a friend of mine when I found a drawing of a character from a video game, it made me super nostalgic so I attempted to Google it, but I couldn't find it anywhere. It was a drawing of a corn kernel in a ballerina outfit, I think it was one of his power ups. He had a really simple face and could also be mistaken for a yellow tooth, the only reason I know he is a corn kernel is because my mom wrote what I the drawing was from my description in the corner of the paper. I don't remember where the game was from I just remember playing it on my dad's tablet, I probably found the game from an old gaming Youtubers let's play. My family uses Samsung stuff now but I think when I was younger we used apple, so it might be on apples app store. I can't remember anything else about the game except for some visceral bacrounds, something about teeth and that I had a huge hyperfixatesaton on it as a little kid, I think I rage quit because I couldn't beat the game. Most of my favorite games from then were canceled or discontinued so this one probably is as well, I just really want to know what it was or what happened to it, maybe even beat the game if I can still play it somewhere.

1: Fatigue needs to be nerfed in career mode. It’s just way too strong. Basically it’s broken if you play a real classic tennis match length as well. You shouldn’t be penalized by selecting a different match length.

- Nerf power or improve other skill sets. Online play is too one dimensional. They need to make other playstyles competitive so gameplay can be more varied.
- Allow us to play matches against AI myplayers in exhibition mode. Seems simple enough for them to do and I’m a bit surprised it’s not possible.
- Allow upto 5 preselected outfits for myplayer so we don’t have to keep changing gear.
- Add tournament mode. Maybe this might require more of an effort on their part. Let us start a tournament outside of mycareer and select current, legend, myplayers to participate in it as either user selected or ai.
- Tweak difficulty settings to be more competitive overall
- Add online doubles
- Add myplayers as AI opponents to mycareer.
- Allow us to play a career with an existing player or legend. Allow us to select which existing current/ legend/ myplayers are in mycareer.
- Add doubles/mixed doubles tournaments to tournament mode.

I thought about how I would stop hating the starfield of dreams event. My simple idea was: Just add a baseball outfit to the milestones (e.g. milestone 8). Then it isn't so much a waste of time and doesn't feel as unreachable as the top 20 leaderboard. Doesn't need to be much. Just a way to unlock the baseball outfits and reduce the hate on the event.

The BYW 0 TO 60, honestly, has a very unique name. Stripping away the appearance and looking at the essence, it's basically a BYW 2.0 with added zippers and overlays, so it's fundamentally still a performance basketball shoe!
Fit and Comfort: 7/10
When I put them on, I have narrow feet, low arches, and flat feet. I wear size 46 shoes, and they fit just right. The sizing is significantly smaller by one size. The main reasons are the inner bootie, the running zipper, and the low-pressed leather at the forefoot. Additionally, the shoe last itself is very low, pressing down on the foot. For those with high arches, I’d advise you to skip these, as you might not even be able to zip them up! Therefore, choosing a size up is definitely safe! When worn statically, it gives a front-low, back-high center of gravity feel. It doesn't press against the arch, so it's fine for flat feet!Strap Design: 6/10
A particularly important point to note is that the strap is quite short and lacks elasticity. If your ankles are thick, it might not fasten properly!Performance: 8/10
In other aspects, there's no significant difference from the basic BYW 2.0. When playing, you can clearly feel the full-length BOOST. For me, it doesn't jar my brain at all; landing is very comfortable! Of course, don’t expect much court feel—you’ll mainly feel the bouncy experience that BOOST provides!Suitability: 8/10
Overall, for playing basketball, it’s more suitable for guards or forwards with a bit of weight, whether practicing by yourself or for daily sports training.Style: 7/10
