2024.05.07 16:47 Mkyhhd For AI, a Few Seconds of Power Becomes a Booming Business -- WSJ

Dow Jones Institutional News; New York. 06 May 2024.

The data-center building boom is underpinned by a basic requirement: Never, ever, lose power.

The race to power new artificial-intelligence models and keep internet and mobile services humming around the clock is creating a windfall for the makers of the generators and battery systems that are crucial to keeping power flowing through thunderstorms and grid failures.

Blips, sags, dips or anything else less than a smooth, continuous flow of electricity aren't tolerated at Stream Data Centers' two computer server sites in suburban Chicago. The converted warehouse buildings host thousands of servers, backed up by banks of batteries and diesel generators.

"We're considered a mission-critical facility," said Stuart Lawrence, Stream Data's vice president for product innovation and sustainability. "The customers we're serving are very energy-conscious."

The company acquired more than 50 homes and businesses nearby that it has razed to make way for a new three-building data-center campus. Construction on the first building is expected to start next year.

Data-center developers are in the midst of a building boom spurred on by powerful new computer chips driving artificial intelligence-enabled products, such as ChatGPT, that sift through vast repositories of information and images to make decisions. AI servers are being layered on top of an already robust data-center market for cloud-based servers that empower consumers to remotely pay bills, purchase clothes, send emails or stream their favorite TV shows on computer screens.

U.S. data-center space expanded by 26% in 2023, according to real-estate firm CBRE, with a record amount under construction. Prices for available space continue to rise.

"I don't see the music stopping any time soon," said Nic Bustamante, chief technology officer for Corscale, a Houston-based developer and manager of data centers.

The usually staid market for outfitting data centers with generators, batteries, transformers and other electrical gear is being supercharged by the build-out. Companies including electric equipment makers Eaton, ABB, Schneider Electric and generator manufacturers Caterpillar and Cummins attribute rising electrical equipment sales to data centers' expansion.

Schneider last fall received a five-year, $3 billion contract from Dallas-based Compass Datacenters to provide prefabricated rooms with power management equipment that can be dropped into data centers under construction.

Engine maker Cummins recently said it expects sales from its power-generation business to increase by 10% to 15% this year, up from its previously forecast 5% to 10% growth. The company aims to expand production of 95-liter engines used for data-center generators.

"We're sold out on our 95-liter through 2025," Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Rumsey said.

At rival engine maker Caterpillar, sales of diesel engines for power generation grew to $6.4 billion in 2023, a 29% increase from 2022, driven by data-center sales. Sales of power-generating engines rose by another 26% during the first quarter of 2024.

Caterpillar plans to invest $725 million in its Lafayette, Ind., plant to expand production of large engines used to generate electricity.

"We see electric power as a growth business within Caterpillar. A big driver of that is the data-center business," said Jason Kaiser, president of energy and transportation for the construction and mining-equipment company.

Eaton reported recently that orders for data-center electrical gear have more than doubled over the past 12 months. "We are signing multiyear agreements with our customers to ensure that we have capacity in place to support the demand they need from us," CEO Craig Arnold told analysts on a conference call.

Backup power, air cooling, power distribution gear and other building systems account for as much as half the cost of constructing data centers, which typically ranges from $500 million to $1 billion each, according to developers. Large diesel-powered generators cost as much as $1.5 million each, with waits to get them from manufacturers stretching as long as two years.

"The challenge is having power available. You cannot have downtime and you cannot have a power outage," said Natalie Silva, critical power and sustainability leader for ABB.

Developer CloudHQ has more than 300 Caterpillar generators at seven data centers operating in Northern Virginia -- the nation's data-center hub -- and two additional sites under development there.

Generators and battery backups see sparse duty in most parts of the country. At CloudHQ's Virginia data centers, the generators typically turn on once or twice in a year in response to a full power outage and usually run for a minute or two before regular power service resumes.

CloudHQ's data centers draw power from their own electricity substations that are connected to electrical transmission lines, lowering the likelihood of a prolonged outage from storm damage that other businesses or houses may experience, Vice President Brian O'Hara said.

At one of Stream Data's suburban Chicago data centers, more than two dozen generators built by Cummins stand by to provide the 32 megawatts of electricity needed to maintain the center's servers and other systems.

The data center features four separate halls packed with rows of metal racks that hold the computer servers. The higher density of newer, more powerful computer chips and servers require about twice as much power a square foot in a data center as a decade ago.

If the center loses power, the servers would draw power instantaneously from banks of lithium ion batteries dedicated to each of the building's server halls. Short of an outright loss of power, the center's uninterruptible power supply also smooths out the momentary dips or other irregularities that regularly occur in the power supplied by a utility company.

"The servers have become less and less tolerant to the slight sags in power or brownouts," said Adam Compton, head of data-center strategy for Schneider Electric, the supplier of the uninterruptible power systems for Stream Data.

2024.05.07 16:32 spartachilles Election of 1948 - Round 2 A House Divided Alternate Elections

Election of 1948 - Round 2 A House Divided Alternate Elections
While many expected that the Federalist Reform Party would suffer a dire electoral defeat after the challenging circumstances of former President Alvin York’s resignation from office, the leadership of President Charles Edward Merriam seems to have restored the confidence of the American people in his party. Securing the backing of organizations ranging from the American Legion to the American Federation of Labor and riding on the coattails of a strong post-war economy even despite the turbulence of widespread labor unrest and record low global temperatures, the Federalist Reform Party managed to secure a near majority in the House of Representatives as well as several new Senate neats. However, an absolute majority in the first round of the election proved out of its reach and per the provisions of the 32nd Amendment, a second round of the presidential election must be held.
Skeptical of the Popular Front’s failure to exclude Marxist-Hansenists and other socialist radicals from their movement as well as their staunchly leftist political platform, Solidarity presidential candidate Walter Judd and his running mate Mary McLeod Bethune have both endorsed the Federalist Reform ticket while urging President Merriam to accept the broad-based support of the world federation and federal civil rights legislation as a political consensus. Now faced with an uphill battle to clinch the presidency, Popular Front candidate Vito Marcantonio has thus taken to an aggressive campaign arguing that the Federalist Reform Party has left behind workers and minorities in its platform and that it responsible for a brutal war crime in the atomic bombing of Germany that makes it little different from the Integralism of the countries of the Pact of Steel. For his part, Merriam’s allies have sought to paint him as a master administrator who will usher in a new era of prosperity and unprecedented global influence without surrendering the national sovereignty of the United States.
Federalist Reform Party

Incumbent President Charles Edward Merriam
Returning to the helm of his party 20 years after he was first its nominee, 73-year-old incumbent President Charles Edward Merriam now fights to preserve Federalist Reform after the successive collapses of two of its administrations. Beginning his career as a professor of political science, Merriam first achieved political office as a city alderman in Chicago shortly after the Second American Revolution. Channeling the widespread disgust at the rampant corruption in the state government, Merriam brought the local Solidarity and Federalist Reform Parties into an alliance that propelled him to the Illinois Governor’s Mansion in 1920. His following two terms in the office would turn him into a national superstar with his dramatic prosecution of corrupt teamster’s president Cornelius Shea. Thus well positioned at the Federalist Reform National Convention of 1928, Merriam led a radical transformation of the party in abandoning its past equivocation for the dictatorship in favor of a new vision of a powerful yet responsive federal government under the principles of Herbert Croly’s New Nationalism. However, his hopes for the presidency were dashed both that year and when his nomination was denied in 1932 in the face of the rising Formicist movement. Rather than making another attempt at the presidency, Merriam instead became one of the country’s inaugural Censors to help establish the precedents and principles that would guide the nation’s new auditory branch. Yet with President Alvin York seeking an experienced elder statesman to help guide him after rising to the office, Merriam accepted the offer of the vice presidency from York. But when York ordered the nuclear destruction of Germany without consulting even his own cabinet and subsequently resigned from office, Merriam was thrust into the presidency himself with a charge to repair a country left broken by this national crisis. In the months since then, Merriam has tirelessly worked to stabilize the national economy while soothing persistent labor unrest and has taken a keen interest in overseeing the reconstruction of a world left scarred by war to help repair America’s international reputation. In light of his advanced age, Merriam has suggested that he would retire at the end of his full term to avoid the risk of another premature presidential transition, yet this has not spared him from attacks on his fitness to serve a full term.

Incumbent Vice President Edward J. Meeman
Capturing the minds of many within the Federalist Reform Party as its chief advocate of the Atlanticist concept of a world federation, 58-year-old incumbent Vice President and former Governor of Tennessee Edward J. Meeman joins the ticket as a stark internationalist. Introduced to politics by his father who was a two-term state legislator, Meeman joined the Social Democratic Party after the Second American Revolution and applied himself to a career in journalism. However, as he rose through the ranks of the newspaper trade to become the editor of his own magazine, he switched his affiliation to the Federalist Reform Party due to his increasing disdain for the corruption and bossism of his former party. Becoming the editor and business manager of the Memphis Press-Scimitar at the same time as Louis Brownlow became the Governor of Tennessee, Meeman was an indefatigable crusader against the influence of Social Democratic Boss E.H. Crump and supporter of the transformation of the state into a laboratory of Federalist Reform democracy. Widely regarded as one of the state’s premier journalistic figures throughout the governorship of Gordon Browning, Meeman emerged as his natural successor when Browning ascended to the vice presidency. Taking charge of his state amidst the Second World War, Meeman chiefly preoccupied himself with mobilizing Tennessee for the war effort but also notably brought many of the state’s African Americans into his coalition by liberalizing civil rights laws as well as his efforts to improve environmental conservation in the state. Inspired in part by his own German heritage, Meeman emerged as a harsh critic of the atomic bombing of Germany and later became the standard-bearer for the Atlanticist movement within his party. Commanding a crucial section of the party in its National Convention, Meeman was tapped as Merriam’s running mate to win over his support for the President’s renomination and thereafter appointed by Merriam as his Vice President. Though Meeman has handily survived an intraparty challenge to dump him from the ticket in the first round of the election, many Federalist Reform politicians remain concerned about his Atlanticist position especially given the real possibility of him assuming office in the following term.
Although the party sports many adherents to world federalism and remains deeply influenced by the movement, Merriam and the Federalist Reform Party at large have withheld their endorsement of a world government. Instead, Merriam has proposed the formation of a supranational international association to mediate international conflicts, promote the spread of democracy around the globe, and coordinate international action to rebuild after the war and meet the increasingly pressing challenges of global famines. Envisioning representation of all nations of the world but a special role for major powers such as the United States, United Kingdom, and China, Merriam has called for collective security and the establishment of enforceable international laws to be the basis of this organization. However, he has not shied away from suggesting the creation of international economic planning boards and even more ambitious proposals for a baseline common world citizenship and the creation of an international currency. Moreover, while Merriam has not endorsed the world federalist movement, he has not explicitly ruled it out either and promised to appoint delegates to an international convention to discuss the Atlanticist model of federation between Western-style democracies. With a Hansenist revolution having gripped the island nation of Haiti and threatening to spread communism in Latin America and beyond, Merriam has argued in favor of an intervention to restore the democratic government of Haiti and block it from exporting revolution.
Claiming that the nationwide labor unrest has spiraled to the point of crisis, Merriam has strongly endorsed the National Labor Arbitration Act compelling unions and employers to submit to government arbitration. However, he has called for an even handed approach to such arbitration recognizing the needs of both labor and capital to ensure a harmonious economy. Furthermore, Merriam has called for a law to implement a corporatist scheme of industrial associations formed in partnership between employer and employee syndicates to steer economic policy such as wage and price levels. However, Merriam has refused to tolerate violent or criminal actions by labor unions and called for the strengthening of anti-racketeering laws as well as a federal criminal syndicalism law to outlaw the advocacy of violent revolution. To further support economic activity, Merriam has called for the proliferation of government planning agencies staffed by subject matter experts tasked with analyzing the economy for profitable, environmentally beneficial, or socially desirable investments and working with private industry towards their implementation. In addition, Merriam has supported the continued reduction of wartime taxes and tariffs alongside reductions in government spending to bring the budget into balance and limit inflation. Adhering to the longtime platform of his party, Merriam has also supported the implementation of a peacetime universal military training program. As a longtime opponent of political corruption, Merriam has promised to rid the federal government of graft and wasteful spending and pledged to bolster the powers and funding of the Council of Censors. Believing that the primary purpose of the national education system is to groom the next generation of leaders, he has called for the reformation of the Dewey Education Act towards heightening civic education and national identity. To implement his agenda, Merriam has also strongly supported an overhaul of the executive branch to further empower the presidency with added staff, full discretion to reorganize the federal government, and the line item veto on budgets passed by Congress.
Popular Front

New York Representative Vito Marcantonio
Successful in bringing together the Social Democratic and Socialist Workers Parties under a joint ticket and alliance agreement known as the “Popular Front”, 45-year-old New York Representative Vito Marcantonio has thus become the face of a newly united American left. Born to humble beginnings in an immigrant family residing in a crime-wracked neighborhood of Harlem, Marcantonio excelled at academics despite the challenges of his youth and began a successful career in law soon after his graduation. Building his reputation by taking on cases defending workers wronged by their employers and protestors arrested during demonstrations against the Mitchel presidency, Marcantonio built crucial connections within the Social Democratic Party that propelled him to an appointment as a United States Attorney and later election to the House of Representatives. While quick to make a name for himself first with his opposition to President Howard P. Lovecraft and later for his opposition to the declaration of war upon Japan, Marcantonio always remained sensitive to the needs of his constituents and returned to Harlem every weekend to solve their governmental problems and thereby earned their undying loyalty with every election. With his initial opposition to the war tempered by his loyalty to the Social Democratic Party and flexibility regarding supporting certain war measures, Marcantonio found himself uniquely positioned to earn the joint nomination of the Social Democratic and Socialist Workers Party and thereby take a leading role in uniting them electorally under the Popular Front while maintaining their formal political independence. After an incident where a Federalist Reform election worker was beaten to death in Harlem during the first round of the election, Marcantonio’s opponents have pounced on the opportunity to paint him as an unsavory machine politician with ties to the Italian Mafia that is known to operate in his district.

Washington Governor Harry E. B. Ault
With the Popular Front agreement demanding the nomination of a Socialist Workers politician for the vice presidency, 64-year-old Washington Governor Harry E. B. Ault stands as the candidate of the more radical side of the electoral alliance. Born to a family of committed socialists, when he was a teenager Ault moved into a blossoming cooperative socialist colony in Washington state. Serving as a press secretary for the ill-fated 1908 presidential campaign of Eugene V. Debs, Ault became a wanted man during the Grant dictatorship and witnessed the death of his political mentor Hermon F. Titus at the hands of Grantist Blueshirts. Surviving until after the Second American Revolution, Ault became the editor of Seattle's premier labor-owned newspaper, the Union Record. Thus, he became a central figure in the Seattle General Strike opposing the influence of William Z. Foster and urging a pragmatic balance of direct and political action. Appointed as a United States Marshal by President Frank J. Hayes as an olive branch to pacifists amidst the rapid split of the Social Democratic Party over the issue of the Second World War, Ault was placed into the impossible situation of enforcing laws such as the Alien Registration Act that he found fundamentally unjust and resigned his position soon after. Nonetheless, this service was enough for him to be marked for arrest by his former employee Anna Louise Strong when she took leadership over the Seattle commune during the Syndicalist Revolt against President Howard Hughes. After a brief spell of Federalist Reform control over the state following the suppression of the revolt, Ault led the Socialist Workers Party to sweep elections in the state in 1944. Although he drew some consternation from his allies for his pragmatic choice to avoid excessively obstructing the war effort in order to stave off another federal intervention in state politics, Ault nevertheless became a national voice for the war-weary searching for a quick end to the war. Yet with a newfound wave of nationalism following victory in the war, Ault has been ruthlessly attacked not only as a political radical but also an unpatriotic coward.
Arguing that the formation of a world government is the only possible path to ensure world peace, Marcantonio has strongly endorsed the creation of a worldwide federal union. While supporting the delegation of powers to control nuclear power and international armaments, Marcantonio has also gone a step further than his opponents in suggesting that the federation be granted a relatively broad power to provide for the “general welfare” and regulate “international commerce” in a model similar to that of the United States. Seeing leftist governments abroad as the principal allies of the United States in forming a world federation, Marcantonio has called for closer relations with Aneurin Bevan’s United Kingdom and Alvaro de Albornoz’s Spain while calling for more support of leftist movements in the occupied countries of the Pact of Steel. Curiously, Marcantonio has also reportedly exchanged letters with Italian world federalist Santi Paladino and Sicilian political leaders regarding the annexation of Sicily to the United States as a precursor to the world federation. Strictly opposed to the European colonial empires, Marcantonio has called for their immediate dismantlement and the creation of new nations under the principle of self-determination. Additionally, Marcantonio has harshly criticized his opponent’s proposals for intervention against international communist movements as warmongering efforts that would needlessly spill the blood of workers.
Attacking the National Labor Arbitration Act as being designed to suppress the right of workers to strike, Marcantonio has campaigned upon its repeal while suggesting that his administration would back the efforts of workers to achieve increases in wages and reductions in working hours as recompense for their wartime sacrifices. Additionally, Marcantonio has called for the nationalization of monopolistic industries such as banking, shipping, electric power, gas, and oil, as well as the nationalization of any industries dependent on government purchases with the defense industry chief among them, arguing that they exploit both the consumers they service as well as the workers they employ. In light of the struggles of the American healthcare system during the deadly Japanese biological attack of bubonic plague and the continued issue of homelessness stemming from destruction in the Bakuhatsu, Marcantonio has called for the creation of a socialized system of national healthcare as well as an ambitious public housing program to guarantee homes for the poor and dispossessed. To fund his extensive governmental proposals, Marcantonio has called for a vast reduction in defense spending as well as the maintenance of many wartime taxes as well as stiffer capital gains, excess profits, land value, and estate taxes. Meanwhile, attacking postwar inflation as the result of unbridled corporate greed, Marcantonio has supported the maintenance and extension of broad price and rent controls. Having built a reputation as a champion of immigrant and minority communities in his district, Marcantonio has supported federal civil rights legislation to bar segregation in housing, employment, and public accommodations as well as an opening of the American immigration system.

2024.05.07 16:26 Sorkel3 Barbarians At The Gate (1993)

Barbarians At The Gate (1993)
The docucomedy about the events surrounding the takeover of RJRNabiso, base on the excellent NYT best-selling book of the same name, considered to be the best business narrative book ever written.
F. Ross Johnson, the CEO of RJR Nabisco decides to take over his own company and enlists American Express. This kicks off a tide of other firms swarming in to tender offers. The outline of the film follows the actual takeover of the RJR Nabisco empire in a tongue in cheek way. Adapted and directed by Larry Gelbert
James Garner is such a likeable actor that he makes his behaviour seem almost normal and natural in a role that's not typical of him, playing the expletive spewing F. Ross Johnson. Jonathan Pryce but he is perfect as the bloodless lizard Henry Travis. Larry Gelbart sustains the humor throughout without losing sight of the absurdity of events.
The greed and excess of Wall Street in 1989's is neatly revealed without being heavy handed, such as the scene where the Nabisco board chairman gets Henry Travis of KKK to hang around another hour while considering bids by agreeing to pay him $40m - for one hour of waiting.
There are a number of notable actors appearing in the film, and the whimsical soundtrack never lets go of supporting the film.
The leveraged eventual buyout of RJRNabisco remains one of biggest ever done. It eviscerated RJR, saddled with massive debt it had to have a fire sale of assets and lay of thousands even though it was a veritable cash cow generating a ton of cash flow.
I believe the only place you can find this film, one of HBO's early made for tv efforts, is on YouTube. The book is highly recommended even for folks who may not havevan interest in business stories.

2024.05.07 16:20 Itaydr Designing for a single purpose

Originally posted on https://productidentity.co/p/designing-for-a-single-purpose
If you’ve ever been to Amsterdam, you’ve probably visited, or at least heard about the famous cookie store that sells only one cookie. I mean, not a piece, but a single flavor.
I’m talking about Van Stapele Koekmakerij of course—where you can get one of the world's most delicious chocolate chip cookies. If not arriving at opening hour, it’s likely to find a long queue extending from the store’s doorstep through the street it resides. When I visited the city a few years ago, I watched the sensation myself: a nervous crowd awaited as the rumor of ‘out of stock’ cookies spreaded across the line.
The store, despite becoming a landmark for tourists, stands for an idea that seems to be forgotten in our culture: crafting for a single purpose.
In the tech scene where I’m coming from, and which you might too, this approach is often perceived as singular, and not in its positiveness. We’ve been taught to go big or go home—raise millions in funding, build a big company, hire more and more employees, and hope for the desired exit.
Anything less is considered a mind of a failure.
From a personal perspective I’ve seen this attitude in almost every branding session I ran with startup founders. Again and again, they struggled to distill their primary focus. Moreover, when discussing competitors, it often seemed their startup competed in every possible field.
In a way, that fear of committing reflects the human nature of FOMO—deliberately giving up on something(s) and experiencing the potential loss of other benefits.
This mindset has also seeped into our collective body of work, especially in software. A product, which often starts as a weird small creature, gradually evolves into a multi-arm octopus, which sadly became the norm for VCware.
And so we’ve been left with bloated, bigger, and… worse software.
The idea of maintaining a small scope in product has already appeared in my writing in various forms; in niche product design I explored the effect of growth on design; and in defense of Twitter, I wrote about the bloated era of incumbent culture. But in between there seems to be a different attitude that not many choose to embrace, which like in Van Stapele’s case, seeks a real purpose.

Going back to basics as a way to find purpose

In a tweet posted a few months ago, Jeff Sheldon described his renewed approach to photography after getting a new camera. It enlightened my eyes.
I’m not a professional photographer, and never been. But my beloved Canon 700D still serves me often while traveling. Besides learning about ISO and shutter speed settings, being familiar with the mechanics of a DSLR camera has also introduced me to the practice of shooting photos in RAW format, which means capturing photos at the highest quality level.
But the super heavy file format marks only the start of the process in modern photography. The rest belongs to the post-processing act: the daunting work of polishing, enhancing, and fixing images.
When I returned from vacation, I hoped to edit my captures. Then I noticed something weird. When comparing my photos to some stunning photos I saw online, it seemed like my camera output wasn’t as good as those shared photos. In doubt of my gear I then, again, noticed something I should have probably known: it wasn’t about the camera, but the editing.
I realized professional-made photos were overly edited, often detached from their original conditions. It appeared that what you see isn’t what you get.
I wondered, has photography become an art of photo manipulation?
To respectful photographers, this might appear like a false accusation. The time spent sitting in front of the photo editor is at the heart of many camera enthusiasts. After all, that’s why a camera is set to shoot in raw.
But this potential debate triggers a more profound question: what’s the purpose of all this thing, to find the perfect angle or color filter?
Despite being somewhat contradicting with modern photography philosophy, I find “going back to basics”, as Jeff described, to reflect the same spirit as of Van Stapele—a devotion to a very minded process. No editing. No over-complication. Working only in one mode, and for the sake of it.
At first glance, Van Stapele’s laser-focused outlook might seem detached from tech and other mass-production industries. But there’s a line that can be drawn between the Dutch cookie store to some other products which makes them all distinct:
Whilst not every product mentioned above is hard-core focused like Van Stapele, the pattern is clear: an intentional commitment to a single purpose—either as a life philosophy, by using specific materials, or a deliberate design. And it also feels more appreciable when succeeding that way.
Some might call out a gimmick, while others appreciate the care for deep focus, which both are understandable. Finding the perfect recipe for the perfect cookie, and then committing to selling only that can be novel or a trick in marketing—depends on who you ask. But as I will stretch out from now on, I choose novelty.
We started with very minimal and basic products, aimed to serve only one simple job. A car to get from point A to B, a telephone to communicate with others, and a watch to check the time (perhaps the last analog device to serve human beings). But then many of our mundane artifacts have become more of a Swiss knife rather than just being exceptional in one form. We’re now drowning in oceans of product suites, both in the digital and physical worlds.

The bloated culture

In software, this trajectory is no different. Furthermore, it’s on steroids.
Despite “Do one thing well” being common advice for people building products in tech, it fails to hold water in the long run. Temptations are far too many to build and launch new stuff. Here’s Dropbox, a famous example of software turned bloated, in the words of DHH of 37signals:
Over the years, Dropbox has tried a million different things to juice upsells, seat expansions, and other ways to move the needle. There’s been a plethora of collaboration features (when all the collab I ever need is those magic links to files I can send over any wire!) and more and more pushy prompts to, say, move pictures and videos straight from the camera into the cloud. Along with pleas not to store the files I have in the system on my local computers (presumably so the transfer costs they pay are less). It’s exhausting.
I just want to pay for the original premise: All my files synched between all my computers, with a backup in the sky. That’s a beautifully, simply solution to a surprisingly difficult problem. And Dropbox absolutely nailed it.
Finished software
Back in its heyday, Dropbox was simple. A classic piece of software. Its purpose was to allow people to store and share files on the cloud effortlessly—either from a computer or mobile device. It was straightforward. Even its homepage was simple. There were no bells and whistles. It was designed to serve… a single purpose.
But as with VCware, things have started to shift gears. Amid Google Drive's popularity, the “drop-to-the-box” identity started to blur as the product offering expanded.. and expanded. It seemed like Dropbox’s purpose became more generic and less focused.
Another resentment that ignited a storm in the design community occurred when the company announced a brand redesign a few years ago. In a way that act marked the shift in the company’s direction, bringing unclarity to its customers. The cynicism of Brand New's audience also made its review post one of the most popular that year.
The novel idea that was executed so well has followed the same growth patterns of the tech bubble—as I wrote in Niche product design:
As companies grow, they gradually move from a state of fan-only to a state of a product for everyone. During this transition, dramatic changes occur, as the drive to satisfy more audiences and increase revenue. But eventually, this shift harms the core of the product. It becomes scattered, and the brand turns into a gigantic octopus, leaving people questioning its purpose and values.
An email client, a note-taking tool, and a Photos-like app are only part of what Dropbox has been involved with over the years.
Today Dropbox is seemingly much more than a storage cloud service. It’s also a video reviewer (if there’s such a term at all), a Loom competitor, and a document e-sign tool. However, at its core, Dropbox is still a company selling terabytes on the cloud.
Yet Dropbox might be just a drop in the ocean. A symptom of a bloated culture in modern software. To better understand this bloat-mania, let’s look at one of its kingpins, and a company of which Dropbox is valued at 0.003% of its worth: Apple. And what’s a better example than one of its greatest products of all time, the iPhone?
Launched in 2007, the innovative touch-screen device had only essential features like phone calls, and text messaging among other luxuries like a camera, an internet browser, a weather, and a stock app. The peak of technology at the time.
In 2008, a year after the first iPhone release, Apple introduced the App Store, which was the catalyst for entering the smartphone era while unleashing a tidal wave of apps.
Fast forward to 2014, and the iPhone got an upgrade in the form of a multi-model release, with the launch of the iPhone 6 Plus. The trend expanded and Apple gradually added different shapes and names to the iPhone line: Plus, Pro, Pro Max, alongside other discontinued model names. This doctrine has been applied to many of Apple’s products—the iPad, Macbook, and Watch. Some got bigger, smaller, or faster. In a materialized world, I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone got bigger only to store more functions.
But perhaps the greatest archetype of Apple’s transition to bloated products was the iPod. The next-level MP3 (or 4?) essence was simple—to carry music on the road. Nothing more. But then Apple gave the iPod a life of its own, as it eventually became an iPhone replication, just without a SIM card.
The iPod (especially the non-touch model) is still dear to many Apple (non-)fansbois. The beloved product was designed entirely around the music experience. Before music streaming services took over the industry, people manually entered song metadata: the title, artist name, and of course—the holy album artwork. The hurdles of iTunes made this a daunting task, but iPod users found joy in this craft.
As a standalone product, disconnected from other functions, the iPod was a true single-purpose product.

In more recent times

What would happen if Van Stapele decided to add more flavors or open other branches? Probably nothing. Maybe its profits even increase. But the Valrhona chocolate-made cookie store icon will be losing its artisanal identity. Specialty and quality aren't determined by size.
In a more familiar case, we can look no further than the platform that hosts these very own words—Substack. Since the announcement of Notes, Substackers have shared concerns about the direction the platform is heading.
Substack’s original purpose, to some, was to highlight great writing while making writers a living. Now with the seeming transition for eyeballs and short-form content attention, Substack is being questioned whether modern social network dynamics are taking over it.
To close this social network loop—Twitter has been a good executer at designing for a single purpose until it wasn’t, largely by the decision of going for a longform direction alongside launching questionable features. For years Twitter sanctified the quirky 140-then-280-characters limit while establishing a new internet medium. Those recent announcements made by its new execs are ripping off its identity, slowly but surely. By adding more purposes to this platform design, Substack risks going down a similar path, jeopardizing its writer's soul.

Drinking beers and building businesses in Japan

If I were raised in Japan I may not understand what this turmoil is all about. The renowned business heritage in Japan is an oasis in the never-ending capitalistic desert:
Japan’s startup climate has often been criticized for being sluggish, perhaps because a culture that promotes business longevity also cultivates a fear of failure. Now, however, ‘startup’ and ‘atotsugi’ are words spoken in the same sentence, as today’s leaders finally feel permitted to apply entrepreneurial lessons to traditional companies to ensure their legacy continues. Why Japan is home to the world’s oldest businesses
Japan is located on the other side of the earth, and its business culture values seem too. In a Western society of hyper-everything, which characterizes the move-fast-and-break-things startup ethos, the far island culture is way more cautious. Instead of financial logic, which might seem irrational, the ‘shinise’ tradition cultivates sacred values such as continuous improvement, longevity, and care for quality. It’s an extremely long-term game.
In Japan, more than 52,000 companies are more than a century old. Why Japan is home to the world’s oldest businesses
Japan is probably the largest home for centuries-old businesses, in varied fields from sake producers, to hotels and construction companies. This fact is much attributed to how generations of Japanese aspire to keep businesses running in the family. But as in the words of Yusuke Tsuen, the current owner of Tsuen Tea, the key to sustaining a shinise is to focus only on one thing:
“We’ve focused on tea and haven’t expanded the business too much,” he says. “That’s why we’re surviving.” Why so many of the world’s oldest companies are in Japan, Bryan Lufkin
In The Price of Immortality, Rohit Krishnan concluded the same:
The conclusion of this little digression has been to find common grounds amongst the most long lived organisations, and turns out you need to be a particular type of company: Extreme dedication to doing one thing well
But the Japanese business heritage isn’t the last and only resort from bloat-ism. The next time you drink beer, think about this:
Weihenstephan is considered to be the oldest brewery in the world, founded in 1040, more than a thousand years ago. And we don’t need to travel this far back. Other European breweries like Tuborg (1873) and Heineken (1864) are over 150 years old.
Van Honsebrouck, the brewery that produces the famous Kasteel Rouge was founded in 1865 and is still owned by the same family.
The brewery is still owned and operated by the family, now the seventh generation of van Honsebrouck brewers in Ingelmunster. James Clay
Breweries have developed more tastes and flavors over the years, but they’ve been all operating for a single purpose for decades and hundreds of years: to craft beers.

What might come next?

A real shinise is rare in tech. Focusing on a single purpose often seems boring, a narrowed view, or a lack of ambition to some. But I find it invigorating. A long-lasting design can be timeless and unique.
Do we really want to carry our stress, depression, and fears everywhere we go? Don’t we want to feel disconnected from time to time? Then why the heck do we carry our mobile phones everywhere we go, even to entertain ourselves in the toilet? And not to mention the germs.
Would this all happen if we were using a cell phone that’s just designed to make phone calls? This is actually what the Light Phone founders realized a decade ago:
What does it do? Nothing. You put in a SIM card, press a few buttons, and make a call. There’s no browser. No games. No NFC. It has quick dial, which is nice, and it doubles as a flashlight. The Light Phone Is The Anti-Smartphone, John Biggs
I may get carried away from the main idea of this essay, but that’s in part why I think designing for a single purpose is so important. The purpose of many products and artifacts has gone lost. Beyond the seeming gimmick, building for a single purpose reflects an understanding of what a thing is meant to be, and serve.
We’ve reached a point where focusing seems like spinning one's wheels, instead of appreciating the deep care of it.
And perhaps going back to basics is inevitable. When I’m reading on my Kindle I don’t get bothered by WhatsApp messages, or get interrupted by an incoming call. I’m not being tempted to do something else. I’m just focused on the act of reading.
As Devon tweeted a few years back: “When using my cellphone, I tend to become a passive consumer of the internet.” This also resonates well with the idea of this whole long text but from a slightly different angle. Using a multi-purpose product increases my distraction level, as I consume more things in the background.
Using a product that was designed for a single purpose brings back joy. It removes all the unnecessities and emphasizes an experience essence in a calmer environment, and with a real purpose.
Unlike photography, what you see is what you get.

  1. Principle of implementation
  2. Specific operation
  3. The HDAI Stability Fund with a long-term appeal
  4. Bitcoin HKD standard needs to balance the interests of big countries
  5. There is national competition to achieve the bitcoin standard
In Chapter 12 of the article “Invite Satoshi Nakamoto to Welcome the New World,” I proposed the Bitcoin dollar standard. The most common opinion I heard was that the idea was good and the logic was correct but not feasible. The Fed can’t use it because it destroys their vested interests. I have a sentence in the previous article that the Bitcoin dollar standard is the Fed’s competition to get this position. In other words, the Fed and others may realize this vision. This article takes the Hong Kong dollar as an example to talk about how the Hong Kong dollar realizes the Bitcoin Hong Kong dollar standard.
4.6.1 The advantage of the Hong Kong dollar realizing the Bitcoin standard
1. The external environment is getting better
The Hong Kong government hopes that “From governing to thriving”, make a big move in the blockchain field. The new SAR government is fully promoting the combination of “promising government” and “efficient market”, and is doing its best to “grab enterprises” and “grab talents.” On October 31, 2022, the “Policy Declaration on the Development of Hong Kong’s Virtual Assets” was published. Relevant officials actively participated in blockchain-related meetings, because they know that only by developing and strengthening Hong Kong’s status as a financial center can Hong Kong have a future.
At the blockchain conference on January 9, 2023, Chen Maobo, Hong Kong’s financial secretary, said: “Hong Kong has been based in the international financial market for decades and enjoys a good reputation. Our regulatory framework and system are in line with international rules and have received international recognition. It is widely recognized that fintech companies in Hong Kong can better use this as a platform to develop international business and explore cross-border cooperation.” In addition, the good rule of law environment has cultivated high-quality citizens throughout the years.
Regarding the blockchain, Hong Kong’s support and encouragement attitude are completely different from that of the mainland, and the mainland has not opposed it. Therefore, let us believe that the Hong Kong government has the potential to become a “promising government.”
2. Hong Kong is a more neutral region
I said in the previous article that the Bitcoin standard should be neutral. Hong Kong circulates Chinese and English, speaks Cantonese, Mandarin and English, and the combined population of Chinese and English covers nearly 3 billion people. Hong Kong has people of all races, and it is an international metropolis. If the Bitcoin standard is realized, it will make it more neutral.
The mainland backs Hong Kong. According to the “2021 RMB Internationalization Report” of the People’s Bank of China, in 2020, the total RMB settlement volume of overseas RMB clearing banks was 369.49 trillion yuan, of which Hong Kong accounted for 76%, and trade settlement volume accounted for 42%. It is one of Hong Kong’s strengths. The reason why RMB has such a large clearing volume is mainly due to the RTGS system. RTGS is a real-time gross settlement system; Real Time Gross Settlement is a cross-bank electronic settlement system established by international standards, which specializes in handling cross-bank transfers initiated by the payer’s account bank.
RTGS has four major systems: Hong Kong Dollar, U.S. Dollar, Euro, and Renminbi. In the financial field, Hong Kong is a trusted financial center for all parties. Generations of hard work have forged Hong Kong’s status as a financial center. It is the lifeline of Hong Kong’s survival. It cannot be destroyed but should only be strengthened.
3. Hong Kong is a small government
There are 175,000 civil servants and 7.2 million Hong Kong residents, and the proportion of civil servants is 2.4%. The critical reason for the small government is to anchor the dollar and economic freedom, so there is no need for complicated management agencies. Moreover, it is most in line with the law of natural economic growth.
4. The Hong Kong government has assets
The Basic Law of Hong Kong stipulates that the state owns the land in Hong Kong. The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is responsible for the management, use, development, lease, or grant to individuals, legal persons, or groups for use or development, and all income is at the disposal of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Having assets is the guarantee to realize the Bitcoin standard. It is also an advantage that the U.S. government does not have. The disadvantage of Hong Kong is that its size is not large and it has reliable assets to provide background support for the Bitcoin Hong Kong dollar standard.
5. tax advantage
Hong Kong’s land advantage has been transformed into a low tax rate advantage, and the policy is stable.
6. Hong Kong Economic Freedom
The Fraser Institute in Canada’s 2022 Annual Report on the Economic Freedom of the World continues to rank Hong Kong as the world’s freest economy. Among the five assessment items, Hong Kong continues to rank first in “freedom of international trade” and “regulation.” Hong Kong continues to top the list with a score of 8.59. This position has not changed in the rankings for 27 years. However, this year’s economic freedom score has dropped by 0.28 points from the previous one, which is higher than the global average drop of 0.16 points. The Fraser Institute think tank believes that China should be blamed for this, Implement new harsh policies in Hong Kong. Maintaining Hong Kong’s degree of freedom is the guarantee for maintaining Hong Kong’s status as a financial center. It is also the fundamental guarantee for implementing the Bitcoin Hong Kong dollar standard.
7. A financial model that lives within our means
It is how every family lives, and we must, because we can’t print money. Living within our means does not mean that we cannot borrow money. The key is to consider whether we can repay the debt. Failure to pay back the debt is a family disaster. If the financial management of a country is not as good as that of a family, what is the reason? They can print money, inject water into the currency, and cause inflation. The so-called moderate inflation is the act of stealing money. The reason we discussed earlier.
The Hong Kong dollar is a fiat currency in name, but it is actually a stablecoin model. Reliable assets must back the stablecoin, so the Hong Kong dollar is fiat in name but an asset token. Since currency cannot be issued indiscriminately, it must live within its means. The sign of living within one’s means always has a fiscal surplus. It is a classic case of the fundamental difference between asset and fiat currencies. Before 1983, Hong Kong implemented many measures, but they were not stable enough. When the linked exchange rate was implemented, Hong Kong’s economy underwent risk tests and is rock solid.
Henry Bremridge, the architect of Hong Kong’s peg, was an entrepreneur-turned-official. His characteristic is grasping the problem’s essence and creating rather than executing. The founder of fiat money was English entrepreneur William Paterson. The fiat currency method he proposed is a method of creating currency with government credit, which alleviates the debt crisis of the English government. To him has different evaluations. Coincidentally, they are both entrepreneurs. Is it accidental or inevitable? In the preface to the article “Inviting Satoshi Nakamoto to Welcome the New World,” I said that economists are good at describing problems, and entrepreneurs are good at solving problems. What are officials good at? The first characters of official and administrator are pronounced the same in Chinese. In fact, good officials are good at management. Mr. Joseph Yam Chi-Kwong, the first CEO of Hong Kong’s Monetary Authority, is an outstanding representative of management. His characteristics are not in creation but in the implementation and research of system details. Through the efforts of his generation, the linked exchange rate system was consolidated. Their foresight has created a great Hong Kong dollar and Hong Kong’s status as a financial center, becoming the basis for a currency model that represents the future asset currency era. When a bitcoin Hong Kong dollar standard model exists, Hong Kong officials can create a system.
8. Hong Kong dollar is a stablecoin
The Hong Kong dollar has the same characteristics as the stablecoin. It is anchored to the U.S. dollar, and The exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the Hong Kong dollar is fixed in the range of 7.75-7.85. The method is simple and reliable, so the behavior is easy to predict, and the transparent of the whole process generates credibility.
The Hong Kong dollar does not have the function of economic adjustment, and the adjustment of interest follows the U.S. dollar. Therefore, although it is called a fiat currency, it is completely different from the U.S. dollar and the renminbi. Therefore, there are a few hurdles to introducing a bitcoin standard.
The most important thing is that Hong Kong has a group of well-trained officials familiar with the stablecoins principle and the rules and regulations that have been gradually established since 1983, and there are related running procedures. It is the most experienced official team in the world.
The Bitcoin standard only adds an anchor object to the Hong Kong dollar, forming a dual-anchor structure, and the nature of the Hong Kong dollar remains unchanged. Using assets from Hong Kong to add credit to the government, the Bitcoin Hong Kong dollar standard, the first step can make the Hong Kong dollar (HDAI) the leader of the stablecoin in the cryptocurrency market. The existing stablecoin of cryptocurrency is 150 billion U.S. dollars, which is very suitable for the Hong Kong dollar to enter the market.
The Linked Exchange Rate System design in 1983 was 32 years ahead of blockchain stablecoins. However, evaluating the linked exchange rate with the idea of blockchain, it is found that the ideas are surprisingly similar. Furthermore, due to the stablecoin nature of HKD, it is not surprising that the first stablecoin USDT appeared in Hong Kong.
9. Hong Kong dollar pegged to the U.S. dollar
The Hong Kong dollar range has a fixed exchange rate against the U.S. dollar and flows freely. As the anchor currency of Bitcoin, it is equivalent to anchoring the U.S. dollar in disguise. It is the advantage of the Hong Kong dollar. It is the bitcoin dollar standard in disguise.
10. The future social model of the asset currency
What is the social form of Bitcoin standard, and how should its political, economic, and legal relations be arranged? Hong Kong started an unconscious experiment in 1983, and it has been running for 40 years and is running well today. She is the embryonic form of the future human society. Hong Kong can seamlessly connect the Bitcoin standard and the current linked exchange rate and implement a dual-track transition. If the anchor is more stable than the U.S. dollar, the economy will be more stable than the peg U.S. dollar. The essence of legal currency is to anchor the inflation rate. There was no problem in the early stage. We discussed earlier that this anchor fails when finance and industry go hand in hand. The degree of so-called moderate inflation cannot be grasped in advance. It has been 20 years since we entered the 21st century. Finance theories and methods are still at the level of the 1930s. It’s better not to manage. Practice in Hong Kong has proved that if the U.S. dollar does not move, there will be no interest rate hikes or cuts in Hong Kong.
11. It is a strong competitor to the Bitcoin dollar standard
Hong Kong is positioned as a financial center. If it becomes a bitcoin-based financial center, it will surpass New York and London and start 120 years of glory. Hong Kong people will realize their coveted status as financial leader. In Chapter 13, Bitcoin has a market capitalization of 10 trillion U.S. dollars in the sixth cycle; that is, the status of the U.S. dollar, and Bitcoin will begin to reverse in 2032. It is a historic opportunity. The key is to have a courageous “promising government” that dares to create history and, after a full demonstration by managers, seize the opportunity to enter the cryptocurrency stablecoin industry quickly. The curve in Chapter 13 becomes the guideline. Otherwise, the curve in Chapter 13 does not hold.
Chapter 13 forecasts are based on the base currency M1, and M1 has statistical data which are not the same. Therefore, the difference in M1 affects the accuracy of the forecast. However, as long as it is the Bitcoin standard, the whole logic makes sense, and the trend remains unchanged.
4.6.2 How to realize the Bitcoin Hong Kong dollar standard
  1. Principle of implementation

2024.05.07 16:17 AtlantiumAI The Anti-Christ is a PUSSY

The Anti-Christ is a PUSSY
The Anti-Christ is a PUSSY
By Roc Hatfield for Atlantium AI
Atlantium AI, a company founded by Innovator and Futurist Roc Hatfield, uses highly skilled Remote Viewers, an exact replica of the Kozyrev mirror, and advanced Artificial Intelligence to look into both the future and the past. The combination of these highly advanced, scientifically acclaimed disciplines has yielded extremely detailed data that paints a high-definition forecast or prophecy. The Atlantium AI team recently took a deep dive into the enigma of the Anti-Christ described in the Book of Revelation, the last chapter of the Hebrew Bible.
The Anti-Christ is a Pussy
The persona of the Anti-Christ in the Book of Revelation is described as a human that rises to power in the area of Europe and takes many actions to gather a large following and political control, ultimately abolishing all religions and insisting everyone follow him or else. This is nothing new; this has happened a number of times over the centuries and is still going on to this day.
https://preview.redd.it/pkzwfxnfj0zc1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e218450084542b96d6ad290ce19b1a310c90d4d
So where did this information come from that John, the writer of the Book of Revelation, imparts on all of us? It came from a device very similar to a Kozyrev mirror. The Kozyrev mirror was developed and constructed by a leading Russian scientist. The enigmatic concept of time travel has entranced countless minds through its portrayal in science fiction and fantasy realms.
Yet, nestled within the pages of history is a narrative that blurs the lines between science fiction and reality — the captivating tale of the Russian scientists who ventured into the realm of time travel with their pioneering experiments employing Kozyrev Mirrors. Delving into the theories of Nikolai Kozyrev, a luminary Soviet astronomer, their audacious pursuits stirred both curiosity and skepticism. We shall traverse the corridors of time, exploring the science behind Kozyrev Mirrors and their potential to reshape our understanding of reality itself. (Nikolai Kozyrev)
Remote Viewing, another sensational skill that is very obscure, is little known by the public at large. It is a powerful psychic skill possessed by a scant few in the population, but for those with this amazing ability, enables them accurately see into the future, past, and locate people and objects on Earth within any time frame. It is thought that they have the innate ability to use the quantum field to locate and see things beyond this realm. Finally, AI and its ability to scan the internet and vast piles of research data offers the ability to corroborate findings offered by the Remote Viewers and the results collected from the Kozyrev mirror.
After using all these tools at our disposal, we have seen some remarkable trends, revelations, and events. The Anti-Christ described in the Hebrew Bible is a big pussy, a puff of wind, about as inconsequential as it comes. The Hebrew Bible was written by the ancient Sumerian gods, the Anunnaki. These space-faring ancients were posing as gods and creators. They couldn't be further from a god than an ant. The Anunnaki were advanced scientifically, socially, and had great knowledge of the ethereal planes. However, this did not give them anything near god-like powers. To the early humans, they were as gods to them. Today, we would not be impressed by them.
The Anunnaki did have knowledge of anti-gravity and used it for propulsion in their vessels. As a consequence of using gravity, it had a side effect of distorting time. Time and gravity are affected by each other. The Anunnaki constructed a Looking Glass using these gravity generators, and they were able to see far ahead as well as far behind. As a matter of fact, the U.S. intelligence agencies and defense department built this same device at Area 51, which yielded great results. The Anunnaki chronicled the images they viewed of a distant future, and these documents were eventually passed to John, the writer of the Book of Revelation, most likely by the Kabbalah, a mystic Hebrew Sect.
The information gleaned from using a Looking Glass or any other time system is not 100 percent accurate due to multiple timelines intersecting. This phenomenon skews the results because the observer is seeing multiple outcomes. The Anti-Christ reference itself is completely based on misunderstood premises. The Hebrew Yahshua, also known as Jesus, was a unique child but not divine or much different than any other child. He did have a powerful education, traveling to Egypt and learning there before returning later to become a teacher. Yahshua taught about many Eastern ideological concepts that seemed divine to the people in the street. After all, people back then had no idea of scientific concepts; they wiped their asses with leaves and rocks and had no idea where the sun went at night. Yahshua learned from the ancient Rama and other long-gone advanced space-faring civilizations based on Earth all the ideas and theories of an all-knowing creator. So, he was out shooting off his mouth every day about this higher authority, and he was killed by the real authorities of the day to stop him from spreading all his nonsense. The same thing would happen today; just try to go out into the street, spew some nonsense that threatens the powers that be, and see what happens.
The Anti-Christ and Christ are references to the Christ Consciousness, a Middle Eastern concept of an enlightened way to think and treat your fellow humans. Noble concepts, no doubt. Being Anti-Christ Conscience is a reference to behaving the opposite of what the tenets of being and acting Christ-Conscious like are all about.
The Anti-Christ in the Hebrew Bible is a phantom, brewed up by John to sell books. He took the Anunnaki reports he was given, and used elements of the report to create his Book of Revelation. This is why it has so many eerie references to modern warfare, social systems, cryptocurrency, and marks for identification; he drew them straight from the records of the Looking Glass operated by the Anunnaki.
So, the next time you see a video or read an article about who is the Anti-Christ? When will he show up? You can just blow all that off. The true believers will always want to fill that void with some crazy concocted non-sense. Let them, it will keep them busy and away from us.
Using the Remote Viewers, Kozyrev Mirror, and AI, we have seen things that make the Anti-Christ seem like a friendly neighbor. Events taking place in the near future will shock the senses. We will release our own reports chronicling our discoveries as we travel into the distant future observing major events.

2024.05.07 16:16 Educational-Buy-5090 My Experience with Lowes Instillation and customer support

has been down right awful. There are no words out there encompassed the frustration I have had to deal with for over a year. What am I talking about and what happened?
I hired Lowes at the beginning of 2023 to replace an old deck in my NC home that my dogs has completely chewed up and destroyed,. The Deck to be replaced is was fairly small, but only accessible from the second story of the home and I wanted to be slightly bigger with an option for the water not to go though the deck and make the area below dry.
A man by the name of Jonathan Eldred came to my property as a consultant for Lowes. There I laid down all my requirements for the deck, including the addition of the “dry pace” He took some measurements and was very quick to provide a quote and after comparing other vendors I decided to move forward with them.
At first we needed to wait on the usual stuff, materials, permits, HOA approval, etc. to get done before work started. Here is where the first red flag began. The original dry space that I wanted was the Trex Rainescape. I personal know of other people that have used it for the same need I had and had been very happy with how the material preformed, however for whatever reason Jonathan Eldred tole me via email that the material was nowhere to be gotten and he wanted my project to be done quickly so he switched the material to another vendor Timber tech. He swore up and down via email that this material was way better and I would have no regrets. Fine, he is the expert, right? (spoiler: he was full of shit)
The issues began as soon as material was delivered. I noticed that some material was missing, I wanted some solar lights to be placed on my deck. I asked about them and I was told not to worry they will be delivered next week. Next week never came. (to give some time lines I signed the contract on may/june and materials got delivered late July)
The deck was installed the week after delivery however after the builders had finished for the day they left without telling me anything and when I look outside, there are pieces of material scattered everywhere in my back yard, including pieces of wood with exposed nails. On my driveway, where Lowes had originally dropped off the material, there was still plenty of used material that to my knowledge they may still need for complete the deck.
I call customer service the next morning and they inform me that the deck is completed and awaiting final inspection. I intermediately say how come, I politely explain hoe the dry space has not been installed and still in the drive way along with other material plus the mess that's in my back yard. Lowes tell me that because they did not install it I had to reach out to the contractor they used (KW Quality Trades)
I get the number of the contractor and explain what is happening. Originally they did not want to help ( some context here, my right arm is disabled and I can not lift heavy objects with it) even after I explained to them my physical condition they were still trying to justify not coming out but they eventually agreed to help clean up the yard, remove any unneeded material and move all other material from the drive way to the back yard. Now come the problems.
As mentioned earlier, by this point the deck has been completed and the only thing that was left was to pass private and city inspection and have the dry space installed. I was told they could not install the dry space immediately due to the need for inspectors to see under the deck for inspection purposes, but once it passed inspection the dry space can be installed (we are in August/Septermber)The contractor’s engineer came a couple of weeks later to see the job and give recommendations on areas that needed extra tightening, reinforcing, etc. That was done relatively quickly. Then we needed the city inspector to come, this was also a quick process. However! The deck kept failing inspection, 3 times I may add.
I was in contact with the Lowes contractor Kimberly Woodal from KW Quality Trades and every time the inspection failed she would swear up and down that the deck was done to code and the inspector would not read the engineer report that was given to them. Yet every time it failed their crew would come out and do some stuff to deck before asking for the inspector to come out. This process took 4-6 months.
Now let me add more context here. I exchanged over 45 emails and just as many phone calls with Kimberly during this time because they would not communicate and they had ZERO sense of urgency. If I would have not been on their case the way I should have I would still be waiting for the deck to pass inspection.
Now we can get to the fun part. Once inspection passes in NovembeDecember, Lowes and KW Quality realize that some material is missing for the dry space, so that gets ordered. Its not till the last week of January that the dry space is installed. Same as when the deck was build, the builders leave with out saying anything and when I look out to see the finished job and WOW it could have done it better myself. I could intermediately notice that the dry space was not installed correctly, there gaps all over and the gutter piece was missing and you guessed it was not ordered, woops. Fine, OK. I called customer service again and they reassured me that the product will be delivered soon and the project will be completed. This is still late January.
Very soon after the dry space has been put up a nice light rain came in and as you can guess the dry space does absolutely nothing water comes in from all crevices and only less than a 1/3 of the dry space area is actually dry. Another piece of evidence to confirm it was not installed properly.
After not hearing anything for a few weeks I start calling Lowes customer service about every other day to get an update on my project. Think of an excuse and that's what I got every time with their support. I got suspicious of Lowes and got an independent contractor to look at the dryspace and tell me if its installed correctly. When the independent contractor I hired game me his results I was not socked for him to tell me its not installed correctly, what surprised me was all the damage Lowes did to my property and tried to hide it. Lowes had removed so much of my siding that water was starting to get into it. I took pictures of it and send it to Lowes and the installer they used. Both denied any wrong doing, Lowes stated that “putting siding back up was not part of the contract” KW Quality stated “we have to do what Lowes tells us” This was thousands of dollars more that I had to spend to repair my property.
By this point, I have acknowledge that Lowes and its contractors have no idea what they are doing and area threat to my property and finances. Though email I asked for a refund of the dry space and have Lowes take down and remove the faulty product that was installed. Bellow is the email that came to the alleged resolution:
Typing it out for visibility( no idea why images are not being shared):
“Per our conversation, there were 3 options that was given regarding issue with dry space. Option 1. We get third party inspector to go out. Option 2. Request Site visit with Installe Field provider manager 3. We will offer 400.0. You have chosen to have 3rd Party Inspection to be completed. I have sent request to Installation Support Manager Jennifer. You chose option 1. You also stated if 3rd Party Inspector states dry space is not installed correctly or if you the inspection is not scheduled within 1-2 weeks you are requesting 3600.00 to be refunded. “
Leitha (Letty) Simon
Porject Support Professional Lowe’s Companies, Inc
Very Clear, send your inspector, if its not done right please refund me. Not gonna go into their details of their $400.00 USD take some money and shut up option. I them told to shove those 400 where the sun dont shine.
As you can imagine, this resulted in my case being escalated to having someone be a dedicated point of contact. Shortly after Lowes sends their own inspector to look at the dry space. After about a week I call and ask to see the report, Lowes tells me that it passed, I reply great, let me see the report. As expected Lowes REFUSED to send me a copy of the report. I them demand to get all this in writing, here is the official response: (typed out)
"We additionally would choose to not share the requested internal company documentation requested. The dry space does not require an inspection report due to this item is not structural but cosmetic."
thank you
Carla Lingerfelt
Lowes executive customer relations
So not only do I have a poorly installed product, but as per Lowes official responses they did NOT send an inspector for the dry space as originally written, requested and expected. They are still not wanting to issue the refund that they agreed they would be in discussions with me for the amount of $3600.00 USD if they did not send an inspector for the Dry Space. This email came on 4/20/2023
I have traded over 120 emails and just as much if not more phone calls with Lowes and its contractor. This is not what wanted, I have been scammed by Lowes. English is not my first language, I am a first generation Hispanic migrant. Lowes and the people mentioned here take absolute advantage of the weak and under privileged. I will NEVER use their Services, contractors, tools, and or products ever again or will recommend anyone to go with them or give them any business.
There is still no resolution in sight, the project has been ongoing for just about a calendar year now. I made this review/post no for venting purposes but to warn other innocent people to put their hard earned money to other business that are local or smaller even if the upfront cost might be more. I do hope Lowes does right to me as its customer but I highly doubt they will.

2024.05.07 16:10 votechain-pro Exploring the Concept of Vote Chain: A Deep Dive into Decentralized Voting System.

Vote Chain strives to establish itself as a practical utility token, targeting the $3 billion online survey industry and granting users control over the voting topics they wish to create or engage with while earning rewards for their contributions. Vote Chain has chosen to leverage the Cardano Blockchain for its project, citing several key advantages over other blockchain networks. By embracing peer-reviewed code and adhering to a scientific philosophy, Cardano ensures the highest standards of code quality and meticulously designed architecture. This approach is specifically tailored to address the blockchain trilemma, effectively balancing low transaction fees, robust security measures, scalability, and decentralization.
Vote Token Sale Vote Chain has partnered with the Cardano Crocs Club to facilitate Token Sale distribution. As part of the Pre-sale, investors will receive a 500$C4 airdrop upon purchase. This bonus will be automatically sent to the buyerCha's wallet alongside the Vote tokens. Additionally, investors holding Vote tokens at the end of the token sale will be eligible to participate in a Jackpot. The number of Vote tokens held will determine entry into one of four Jackpots, with prizes ranging from $500 to $10,000. The presale is scheduled to begin in May 2024, featuring two stages for acquiring $vote tokens. In Stage 1, buyers can acquire 25,000 Vote Tokens for 1 ADA, while in Stage 2, the rate is 16,000 Vote Tokens for 1 ADA.
Vote to Earn
Central to the Vote Chain platform is its innovative vote-to-earn mechanism, designed to revolutionize online polling. To cast a vote, users must possess Vote tokens in their wallet, with their voting power determined by the quantity of Vote Tokens held. This voting power influences only the percentage rewards distributed through the vote-to-earn program and does not impact the outcome of the polls, ensuring fairness and accuracy. Users can create and participate in an unlimited number of polls and are rewarded with Vote tokens for their engagement. These tokens can be staked for additional passive income or used in the marketplace, where they are entered into a lottery system for a chance to win valuable prizes.
The Vote Chain marketplace is called PrizeDash on their platform and has a weekly active lottery event happening where multiple winners are selected. These prizes include digital gift cards from popular brands like Google, Amazon, and PlayStation.
Vote Chain is leading the way in developing one of the initial decentralized online survey platforms, hosting specialized polls curated for holders to contribute platform upgrades or enhancements. These polls, referred to as the "Project Catalyst" on the platform, undergo community voting before integration. The platform, designed by and for the community, remains decentralized and continually improves based on community feedback.
Engaging in the Project Catalyst also rewards users with Vote tokens, thus enhancing their influence on online surveys. Unlike the VoteHub, the Project Catalyst tallies poll results based on voting power.Notably, the blockchain-based voting mechanism ensures the integrity of survey results, as each vote is permanently and immutably recorded on the blockchain. To cast a vote on the blockchain, a nominal transaction fee of approximately $0.17 is incurred. This fee is the only cost associated with voting and is fully refunded to users through the voting rewards program. Users receive additional voting rewards based on their voting power, determined by the quantity of Vote tokens held in their wallet at the time of voting. In summary, voting is free of charge and advantageous for users. The small fee for voting is essential for recording the vote on the blockchain and making the voting wallet eligible for participation in the vote-to-earn program.
Accessible Voting Platform
While Vote Chain offers extensive utility and focuses on providing numerous benefits for token holders, its core essence lies in being a globally accessible platform for web3 projects and worldwide users alike. A key objective of this project is to address the limitations of traditional social media polls and online surveys, which often suffer from low engagement, misuse, and susceptibility to manipulation by bots. The Vote Chain voting system serves as a gateway for worldwide users and Web3 projects to create and interact with polls that attract a larger and more engaged community.
This platform is poised to benefit anyone seeking public opinion on matters of significance. In its upcoming roadmap, Vote Chain will prioritize branding efforts and sponsor various polls for local businesses, web3 projects, and other entities interested in leveraging the platform. The upcoming roadmap also includes plans for staking and a mobile app, further enhancing accessibility to the platform and offering incentives for holding Vote tokens. Holders will be able to delegate to the Vote Staking pool for a passive income, without needing to remove their vote tokens from their wallet to participate in voting on the platform.
Earning Passive Income through Partnerships and the Marketplace
Vote Chain is committed to delivering long-term returns for its investors, leveraging both vote-to-earn rewards and revenue generated from strategic partnerships with brands and Metaverse platforms.
While polls on the Vote Chain platform inherently reward users with Vote tokens for their participation, additional rewards are possible through partnerships. Brands can collaborate with Vote Chain to create polls soliciting feedback on new products from an engaged and diverse community. As an incentive for users, brands may opt to offer NFT's as voting rewards instead of Vote tokens.
Furthermore, Vote Chain can establish partnerships with emerging Metaverse projects, facilitating voting activities within their digital ecosystems. Rewards in such collaborations may include Metaverse-specific tokens, NFT's, or other valuable assets within the respective Metaverse environments.
Another source of passive income for the Vote Chain platform is its marketplace, which operates on a lottery-based system. Here, token holders can participate in competitions to win prizes. Entry into the marketplace requires a nominal fee to record the vote on the blockchain, supplemented by a modest commission fee. This commission, set at 0.25 cents in addition to the blockchain transaction fee, allows the Vote Chain project to generate passive income for platform enhancements or contribute to the buyback program for vote-to-earn rewards.
By maintaining minimal fees, Vote Chain aims to ensure accessibility to the marketplace for all users, striking a fair balance between user benefits and project sustainability.Revenue generated from these partnerships and from the marketplace enables Vote Chain to earn a passive income and conduct buybacks of Vote tokens, bolstering the token's price trajectory, ensuring a continuous supply of rewards for community members over time and project funds for consistent upgrades.
Empowering the Community with VOTE Tokens
Vote Chain is making an unconventional move by releasing 80% of its total supply of 10 billion Vote tokens during the project’s Pre-sale, demonstrating its community-centric approach.
This strategic decision aims to ensure that the majority of tokens are distributed among individual investors who have a genuine interest in the project. Unlike many other Crypto projects, no tokens are reserved for venture capital investors or institutions. The remaining 20% of tokens are allocated for voting rewards and to provide liquidity during the initial DEX and Exchange offering phase.
The Vote Chain Pre-sale is structured into two stages, with the token price increasing incrementally throughout the stages. Each stage spans just over one week, and the Pre-sale has a hard cap of two hundred thousands in token sales.
In summary, Vote Chain's future looks promising, driven by its commitment to innovation, community empowerment, and strategic partnerships. By harnessing the power of blockchain technology and fostering a vibrant ecosystem of collaboration, Vote Chain is poised to reshape the future of digital voting and drive positive change on a global scale in the online survey markets.

Daily Horoscope: New Moon in Taurus, May 7, 2024
New Moon in Taurus, Tuesday, May 7th, increases your desire and anticipation for a life filled with greater love, peace, and abundance, as the moon joins the sun, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus in the fixed earth sign of Venus ruled Taurus, sharing in a Minor Grand Trine aspect pattern with Neptune in Pisces conjunct Mars in Aries, and Pluto in Aquarius, while Pluto is square to Venus. Taurus is a sensual earth sign associated with pleasure, beauty, comfort, and security, bringing you delight and appreciation - or aversion - to how things look, sounds, smell, taste, and feel. Its motto is "I have" and it governs the 2nd house of self-worth, personal finances, and values. The supportive energy which the planets of Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune impart to this lunation can make the improbable seems possible, while Pluto amplifies the desire and determination to reach a lofty goal, or to experience something more fully and richly than you have in the past. An extra blessing that can help you manifest more love, money, or favorable opportunities in your life comes to you via Venus transiting its ruling sign of Taurus, and Mars transiting its ruling sign of Aries, giving the planets of affection and pleasure (sex), and physicality and action (more sex), superpower. Now is the time to woo and pursue, or to enjoy being lusted after. Love may be all you need to generate a feeling of well-being, but elevating your prosperity consciousness won't hurt. You may find that love and money go hand in hand - the more love you feel, the more money will be drawn to you, and the more money you magnetize, the more love and attention you attract. Put appreciation, gratitude, and sharing into action, and choose to live lushly.

It's small business week. Do you you know about the local multiplier? A dollar spent locally boosts Branson's economy.
What do we mean by the Local Multiplier? The Local Multiplier occurs when you spend your dollars at a locally owned and independent business instead of a chain store or online giant. Your dollars recirculate through your local economy 2-4 times more than money spent at a non-local company. As your dollars move through your community, the money generates more local wealth, charitable contributions, and jobs.
What causes the Local Multiplier to happen? We can thank the actions of independent business owners for the Local Multiplier since they spend more of their revenue locally than chain stores and online giants. "Say you spend money at a local pharmacy," explains local economist and author Michael Shuman. "Its employees then go to the supermarket, which might buy from a local farmer. The more times and the faster a dollar passes between hands without leakage, the more income, wealth, and jobs in a community."

2024.05.07 16:01 xMysticChimez Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini

🌿 Detailed Overview:
A seminal work in the field of psychology that explores the science behind why people say "yes"—and how to apply these understandings. Dr. Cialdini, a renowned expert on influence, organizes the book around six principles of persuasion that people use to persuade others: reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, authority, liking, and scarcity.
🔍 Key Themes and Insights:
Principles of Persuasion: Each of the six principles—reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, authority, liking, and scarcity—are explained in detail. Cialdini uses real-life examples and research to illustrate how these principles work in business, marketing, and everyday life.
Reciprocity: The obligation to give when you receive. Cialdini discusses how even small gestures can create a sense of indebtedness and influence behavior.
Commitment and Consistency: Once people commit to what they believe or decide, they are more inclined to follow through with it. Cialdini explains how commitments can be used to drive behaviors.
Social Proof: People will do things that they see other people are doing. The author explores how social influence shapes decisions.
Authority: People follow the lead of credible, knowledgeable experts. Cialdini examines the effect of perceived authority on persuasion.
Liking: People prefer to say yes to those that they like. The book discusses how relationships and attractiveness can sway an individual's likelihood to be influenced.
Scarcity: Perceived scarcity will generate demand. Understanding how scarcity, or the appearance thereof, can affect decision-making is a key point of discussion.
Audience Takeaway:
"Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" is invaluable for marketers, salespeople, negotiators, and anyone interested in understanding the mechanisms of persuasion. It provides tools not just for persuading others but also for defending against manipulation in daily life.
💌 Your Experiences and Reflections:
Have you ever encountered these principles of persuasion in your personal or professional life? How have they affected your decisions, or how have you used them to influence others? Discuss the ethical considerations that come with using these tactics. Sharing your insights can help others understand the power of influence and how it can be applied responsibly and effectively.

2024.05.07 16:00 Impossible_444 Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) 1Q24 Earnings Call Takeaways (from EarningsDigest.ai)

Alphabet's (GOOG) 1Q24 results highlighted robust growth in Search, YouTube, and Cloud, driven by AI-first initiatives. Consolidated revenues for the quarter came in at $80.5 billion, up 15% Y/Y. Search remains the largest contributor, while YouTube advertising revenues grew 21%. Google Cloud reported a 28% revenue increase, driven by GCP infrastructure and workspace productivity tools.
Management noted that Search is experiencing transformative growth through generative AI, with billions of queries already served using AI features that enhance user satisfaction and engagement, extending to Android, Pixel, Photos, and Chrome.
Cloud highlights include the launch of over 1,000 products and features in eight months, with customers such as PayPal and Kakao Brain choosing Google's infrastructure. YouTube boasts significant growth, reaching 100 million music and premium subscribers, and 8 million paid subscribers for YouTube TV.
YouTube and Cloud are projected to exit 2024 with a combined annual run rate of over $100 billion. The integration of AI models under Google DeepMind streamlines development for generative AI applications, as seen with Gemini 1.5 Pro's launch offering enhanced long-context understanding and multimodal capabilities.
The call also highlighted several risks, including:
1/Increased Competition in AI and Search: As the AI landscape evolves, there is a risk that other companies could gain ground on Google's traditional search business through innovative AI-powered search capabilities.
2/ Cost of Infrastructure and AI Investments: Alphabet's increased capital expenditures, particularly in technical infrastructure for AI, represent a significant financial risk.
3/ Monetization of New AI Features: While Alphabet is optimistic about monetizing AI through ads and cloud services, there's a risk associated with integrating these new technologies into its existing monetization paths.
