2024.05.19 22:04 up_of_of_smoke thoughts on logic

"Truth" comes up all of the time in logic. I prefer to think in terms of transfer of belief. If we believe P and P => Q, then we should also believe Q. (I embrace the redundancy theory of truth.)
Formal systems, like Robinson's Q, give us an extremely "normalized" discourse. Whether an assertion is warranted is algorithmically checkable. This is a kind of ideal situation. A "judicial branch" is hardly needed. The hard work of "interpreting the law" is done in the debate about which formal system is more interesting or "referential." Primitive recursive arithmetic is appealing as a "hard core." It is easy to "believe in."
In school, I studied the usual real analysis in classical logic. We never even discussed computability, other approaches. It seems to me now that applied analysis is informally computable, so there is a gap between theory and practice in this sense. Engineers don't believe in calculus because of certain proofs. Such belief is empirically and socially supported.
As Hilbert and Weyl have it, the integration of physics and math is just as a whole. Individual statements may be "meaningless" or deficient in interpretability. That sounds reasonable. But is there not an argument here for a mathematics that is "too empirical" for (pure) mathematicians ? A loose system of mathematical habits and heuristics might just work.
Yet I'm attached to proof. The question might be framed this way : is the essence of math more logical or spatial ? I don't think there is a right and final answer here. Math seems to be both, need both. Logic needs to be applied to something, like the infinite ladder of natural numbers...

2024.05.19 21:38 Thaleskip Thaleskip #33: The Social Network (2010)

Date started: 1/1/2024
Date watched: 5/19/2024
The Social Network tells the story of how Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook. It’s a seedy story, without heroes or villains. Jesse Eisenberg portrays him so well, I’m willing to forgive his performance as Lex Luthor. While he isn’t a monster, it isn’t a flattering portrayal either. He comes across as an antisocial genius with strong asshole tendencies. He is preternaturally confident and always seems in control, so I had a bit of a hard time squaring this with the real guy, who sweats profusely when being grilled about privacy concerns and awkwardly discusses his love for Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce. That, though, is his attempt at a public persona. For all we know, this could be closer to the real Mark Zuckerberg.
The movie was directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, a terrific combo. Sorkin’s writing is known for a lot of rapidfire explaining, with characters casually throwing out all kinds of jargon, facts, and figures. It seems about right for this sort of movie, but there are a few eyebrow-raisers where regular college kids are talking in the same Sorkin-y way. There is a certain rhythm to his dialogue that’s very noticeable and even distracting to me, a West Wing fan, but it didn’t take me out of it.
I wish I had other things to say than “This reminds me of something else”, but this movie really reminded me of Oppenheimer. It cuts back and forth between the past and a future court case, there are many scenes of people talking set to intense music, it’s propelled along by the force of its argument and ideas rather than a straightforward three-act structure, and it follows a protagonist who changed the world but is unable to understand or relate to people. And there are questions it leaves unanswered. Did Mark Zuckerberg steal his idea for Facebook from the Winklevoss twins? Who called the cops on Sean Parker's party? It’s left ambiguous.
Obviously, the whole discussion of Facebook, and of social media in general, has changed a lot since 2010. This would be a very different movie if it were made today. I have no idea to what extent it’s accurate to real life, but I found it fascinating and very well-made.
8/10

2024.05.19 21:13 Ripturd Question about the structure of “this or that” arguments

I will use “free will versus determinism” as an example of what I’m trying to understand.
If somebody asks me if free will or determinism is true, I encounter several issues before I can even attempt to answer the question.
1) These concepts haven’t been defined - how is the questioner understanding or intending them? If the concepts aren’t first defined then it doesn’t seem useful to pose the question.
2) Why is it an eitheor? I can imagine scenarios where the concepts could be compatible, so doesn’t this imaginative exercise nullify the eitheor of the question? If there’s more than two options it doesn’t seem useful to pose the question.
3) Semantics - Even if we define our terms, we can’t be sure that the concepts of free will and determinism aren’t simply faculties we’ve subconsciously assembled via our own humanity and that the terms are only useful within our corporeal existence. We can’t know that we’re even hitting on something fundamental about reality within this debate because we’re speaking from a phenomenologically and linguistically human perspective, and the real facts or structural components that potentially make up reality are concepts so far above our understanding that we’re not equipped to access them. If there’s doubt that the language we’re speaking can help us understand truth if it even exists outside of humanity, it doesn’t seem useful to pose the question.
With these three issues articulated, and there being others I’m missing, I’d like to know two things:
1) is there a name for this systematic type of argument deconstruction I do mentally before even being able to discuss the question at hand?
And
2) Do I have a point in the way that it seems like we’re just stabbing in the dark with these questions? I guess it weighs on me because on one hand, philosophical and ontological questions burn within me and it’s my life’s satisfaction to exercise my mind and try to come up with answers to these big questions, but on the other, i’m skeptical of humans’ ability to even come to close to “understanding” reality with our own minds and language.
I feel like philosophy is one of the most important things we can do while simultaneously knowing we might have been doing it “wrong” from time immemorial. The free will/determinism debate is just a quick way that I can give an example of something I find troubling before we even begin to discuss routes of action or solutions regarding any philosophical questioning.
Thanks for reading!

2024.05.19 21:01 HoneyBadgernurse My personal overview of each type including my personal experiences *LONG AF*

Hey everyone! Lately, I've noticed an uptick in posts that seem to target specific personality types, so I'd like to level the playing field a bit. I previously posted something similar on a now-deleted account and want to refine it. Let me make it clear from the outset: I'm not here to shame anyone based on their chronic mental or physical health conditions. It's not about what you've been through but rather how you take responsibility for your behavior. We all have moments of being unhealthy, and that doesn't make us inherently "bad" people.
I might delve deeper into certain types because of my personal experiences with them, so I apologize in advance if your type isn't covered extensively. In such cases, I'll try to draw from examples outside of myself. When I talk about negative and positive traits, I'm referring to more than just one person; most of us have a mix of both. So, let's dive in!
INTJ Positive INTJs typically exhibit a blend of empathy and rationality, expressing kindness and concern for others in a pragmatic yet comforting manner. They tend to prioritize the greater good and aspire to leave a positive impact on the world. These individuals often demonstrate objectivity and impartiality in analyzing situations, possess a wide breadth of knowledge, excel in various domains, harbor artistic or creative inclinations, remain fiercely loyal to their friends and partners, maintain an easygoing demeanor, innovate by thinking outside conventional boundaries, and showcase remarkable intelligence. Negative traits in INTJs may manifest as arrogance and boastfulness, particularly concerning trivial matters. They might display hints of narcissism and a slight disdain for humanity, viewing the average person as intellectually inferior. Some may prioritize scientific pursuits over human welfare, exhibit materialistic tendencies, and exude cockiness despite lacking substantial accomplishments. They may perceive their viewpoint and persona as superior and distinct, albeit secretly valuing others' opinions. Additionally, they could come across as opinionated and argumentative at inappropriate times, struggle with managing emotions--both their own and those of others
INTP Positive traits I associate with INTPs include a keen sense of humor, sharp intellect, and creative thinking. They tend to excel in finding humor in the mundane, showcasing their intelligence through insightful observations, and expressing their creativity in various endeavors. On the flip side, negative aspects of INTPs may align with the stereotypical "average redditor" persona, characterized by tendencies towards cynicism, pessimism, and occasionally narcissism, particularly when their mental health is compromised. INTPs might grapple with feelings of cynicism towards society or the world at large, struggle with bouts of depression and anxiety occasionally during periods of imbalance or distress.
ENTJ Positive traits of healthy ENTJs in my expirience are easygoing yet engaging, exuding confidence, maintaining honesty and fairness in their dealings, demonstrating loyalty as a friend, possessing an open-minded and progressive outlook even on taboo subjects, actively looking out for the well-being of their loved ones, adeptly recognizing and leveraging others' strengths, and empowering those around them to excel. Negative traits in ENTJs may manifest as tendencies towards narcissism or sociopathy, particularly when under stress. They might exhibit addictive behaviors such as over-exercising, extreme dieting, binge drinking, or substance abuse as coping mechanisms. ENTJs might also display aggressive and defensive tendencies, sometimes pushing people away in cruel ways or sabotaging their own success. They may struggle with controlling tendencies, have an intense and sometimes bullying demeanor, engage in black-and-white thinking, and find it challenging to accept criticism or feedback gracefully.
ENTP Positive traits of ENTPs to me include valuing kindness in others, possessing a high degree of self-awareness, being helpful and supportive, exhibiting strong interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, demonstrating exceptional intelligence and education, showcasing creativity, humor, and cultural awareness. On the other hand, negative traits in ENTPs may manifest as tendencies towards compulsive lying, struggling to handle criticism, engaging in "Schrodinger’s douchebag" behavior where they alternate between provocative and defensive stances, displaying baiting behaviors to provoke reactions, lacking clear boundaries, occasionally exhibiting narcissistic tendencies, frequently playing devil's advocate without genuine engagement, fostering a false sense of superiority, and sometimes becoming delusional in their beliefs or perceptions.
INFJ Positive traits I associate INFJs i’ve met include being compassionate, driven, logical, exceptionally open-minded, possessing a sense of humor, exhibiting high levels of creativity and intelligence, being hardworking and dedicated, being a great friend or partner, having a passion for helping others, and harboring a strong desire to make a positive difference for the greater good. Negative traits in INFJs may manifest as an unhealthy level of competitiveness, feelings of envy towards others, susceptibility to burnout or depression grappling with an inner darkness that can sometimes overshadow their positive traits, experiencing shyness and social anxiety, fostering a sense of superiority, being easily annoyed by others, occasionally exhibiting misanthropic tendencies, and engaging in self-pity.
INFP To generalize healthy INFPs can be exceptionally compassionate, kind, and respectful, possessing a deep and soulful nature, demonstrating intelligence, rejecting patriarchal and toxic masculine norms, having a sense of fashion and style, being objective and fair, exhibiting high levels of empathy, self-awareness, and cultural appreciation, and being able to apologize when necessary. Additionally, they can be quirky and unconventional in their thinking and behavior due to their rich innerworld and sense of individuality. Negative traits in INFPs may include becoming resentful due to their tendency to be overly self-sacrificing , emotionally vulnerable and often of lack boundaries, leading them to continuously try to fix or hide from abusive or damaged individuals at the expense of their own well-being, potentially resulting in them becoming victims of abuse or bullying themselves. They seem to be traumatized by life experiences, leading to self-isolation and shyness, a general distrust of others, emotional explosiveness, being overly critical of themselves, exhibiting misanthropic tendencies, and becoming jaded as a result of negative experiences , not feeling like they fit in with day to day people.
ENFJ Positive traits i’d attribute with healthy ENFJs include intelligence, empathy, exceptional people skills, a strong work ethic, organizational competence, inclusivity, infectious energy, and a lively sense of humor. On the flip side, some negative traits i’ve seen in ENFJ are manipulative tendencies, narcissism, a lack of accountability or willingness to change, attempts to control or change others to fit their vision, harboring secret biases or prejudices, feelings of envy leading to sabotaging others to satisfy their desires and need for dominance and control.
ENFP A positive ENFP to me is Enthusiastic, compassionate, celebratory, charismatic, humorous, vivacious, imaginative, affectionate, steadfast friend, universally accepting, exceptionally inclusive. An unhealthy ENFP to me is approval-seeking, prone to entitlement, tendency to stereotype, inclined toward gossip, critical yet sensitive, lacks structure, may belittle others to boost self-esteem, prone to embellishment, and seeks attention excessively.
ISTJ Positive traits with ISTJs are humor, highly intelligent, diligent, values kindness and is deeply caring. My more negative expiriences with ISTJs showed me they can be stubborn, controlling, dismissive of others' perspectives, and have a tendency to push others away due to fierce sense of independence and can be slightly misanthropic or socially anxious. They seem to struggle to be vulnerable.
ISFJ Positive ISFJ to me is Intelligent, exceptionally kind and compassionate, industrious, gentle, dedicated to the greater good, respectful of others. A negative ISFJ in my experiences can have controlling tendencies, perceives boundaries as a threat, are closed-minded and prone to bigotry, social anxiety, judgment, and can be very demanding.
ESTJ In my experience healthy ESTJs have been Humorous, appreciative of others' strengths, protective of loved ones, deeply committed to family, grounded and practical. Negative ESTJs i’ve met have difficulty accepting criticism, are overly critical of others, dismissive and invalidating, pocess tendencies towards sexism and bigotry, classist attitudes, ineffective leadership skills, demanding and controlling, narcissistic tendencies, struggles to apologize, prone to delusion, cliquish behavior, may engage in bullying, disregard for boundaries, belief in exemption from rules while expecting others to adhere to them.
ESFJs i’ve met tend to be kind-hearted, organized, affectionate, industrious, supportive, adept at interpersonal interactions, helpful , genuine , safe and warm. Negative ESFJs seem to have a tendency to form cliques, are prone to gossip, display classist attitudes, overly eager to conform to societal norms, may bully individuals who are smaller or more introverted ,overly competitive and can be manipulative or self serving.
ISTP Positive ISTP exprieinces for me have been relaxed and easygoing, adept at problem-solving, helpful and supportive, values kindness, fiercely loyal , hard working. Negative ISTPs seem to be prone to impulsivity, passive-aggressive behavior, struggle with accountability for actions, neglects self-care, can become jaded, misanthropic , socially anxious and lazy.
ISFP Positive ISFPs can be Creative, caring, intuitive, respectful, serene, adventurous, fiercely loyal with unique personal stlye and personality. Negative ISFPs can be sabatoging, negativitive, self-pittying, indulgent , and critical/harsh on others.
ESTP Positive ESTPs can be open-minded, industrious, self-aware, respectful, outgoing, adventurous and easy going . Unhealthy ESTPs can have tendencies toward narcissism or sociopathy, indulgence, destructiveness, aggression, inclination to push others away, cruelty, and have propensity to break rules.
ESFP Positive ESFPs can be Incredibly understanding, intriguing , enjoyable and relaxed to be around, a friend to all , genuinely like people and bring people out of their shell. Negative ESFPs can be prone to gossip, seek excessive attention, struggle with accountability for actions, may use others for validation, can be hostile and aggressive , can exhibit promiscuity and disloyalty, unexpectedly traditional and conservative, manipulative and can judge others worth based on appearance and sex appeal.

2024.05.19 20:55 NorthbyFjord 26[M4F] UK/Anywhere – Looking for the one

Hei, hi and hello!
I’m Onsie Onsfjord or Fjord feel free to call me whichever is not mind to me.
I’m a 26-year-old English Norwegian who’s mainly lived his whole life in the United Kingdom and graduated from university with a degree in Computer Networks and is now working as a DIE for the NHS (Digital Infrastructure Engineer).
Caught you off guard with that job title acronym huh? Yeah, trust me when I first started it had me in fits of laughter, but you get used to it after a while.
So a bit about me; - I’m an introvert and tend to avoid public crowds, events and such and just try to vibe with friends on a nice game of anything (which you’ll see below) - I’m an avid IT nerd and will most likely remain this way for my whole career as IT is my education and career at this point - On top of IT you guessed it I’m also a very big avid “gamer” I mainly play PC and PS5 games with my current interests being in Helldivers 2, Star Wars: The Fallen Order, and Jedi: Survivor amongst a few other things like WoW, CoD, SWTOR and so on. - I love learning, whether it be history, game lore, languages, cultures, etc. You name it, and I’ll probably be interested in it (Trust me, you give me a flag of any country, and I’ll be able to tell you the country’s name and political structure. - I’m also an avid book reader and you’ll most likely see my shelf full of different manga from all types of genres, I don’t particularly watch anime, I mainly read instead because I find it more “interesting” for better or not. (Not that I'm opposed to watching it) - I’m trying to learn to cook myself but not very good at it as my most recent attempt I ended up giving myself food poisoning so it’s sufficient to say you will have a big gamble if you’d like me to cook ha-ha. - I do watch football from time to time and do support a few clubs from around the world (mainly northern Europe, the UK, and the US) feel free to guess if you’d like! - I’m currently on a VLCD and have lost about 2 stone within 1 month which I’m super super happy about.
In terms of looks and such I’m what an average 26-year-old would look like who is 6’1/6’2 with a picture on request.
Please don’t judge too much as I’m still working on improving myself.
What am I about? I’ve always made it a goal to help, care for, and support those close to me, whether it be friends, old friends, or the equivalent of my family. They’ve been there for me, and I’ll go hell and back for them as they’ve stood by me through thick and thin, even through the loss of other close friends; they’ve picked me up and brushed me down and set me straight to which I will always forever be in their debt and have helped them being.
Whilst I’ve been shot and backstabbed by many of those who I thought were close to me I just try and see the positive and avoid the unnecessary drama and arguments as life is just way too generally short for that kind of stuff and we should all get along with each other in my mind.
What am I looking for? I apologize if this comes off as really picky - Someone in the realm of the US, Canada or Europe - Someone between the age of 20 to 28 years old - Someone who has an interest in IT, manga, gaming, and such (It’s easier to talk to people with the same interest I’ve found though you don’t need to work in IT at all) - Just be a kind honest individual who I can back and vice versa. Be there for each other.
I am looking for a monogamous and serious relationship and not a friendship, however, I’m fine with starting out as friends whilst getting to know each other etc.
The end? Well, I’d like to say that this was the short and sweet version of myself without giving much more away about me but hey hopefully you’ve stayed this far and if you have, I have a very small simple request for you!
If you do decide I’m someone you’d like to get to know and all of that stuff then when messaging me, please make a somewhat attempt of an introduction (I’m not asking for the mass of paragraphs or anything) just a hi, your name (doesn’t have to be your real name), where you’re from, how old are you, what you do, hobbies, etc and we’ll go from there!
Low-effort chats & messages will be removed also, so I know that you’ve made it this far please put your answers to this question (wrong answers don’t matter, it’s what is attempted counts)
“I was born in the winter on a remembrance day, which day was this?”
Take care and hope to see your message 😊

2024.05.19 20:40 -dreadnaughtx How to know if you have mistyped

Some notes of mine...probably going to eventually put some of this into my book, which will cover The Enneagram as a whole plus insights I have from being a netizen for so long...
How to know if you have mistyped
The quick, functional version. Based on approximately 18 years (and running) of down-to-earth enneagram experience, which includes more hours than I can count reading about the types online and in literature, watching videos, including most canonical texts, some familiarity with all the popular sites, teachers, and groups, plus spending excessive time in small online communities exploring and discussing the types (e.g. “echo chambers” as I like to call them), including years spent on my own stuck in mistyping and/or analyzing the cultish dynamics that The Enneagram community attracts. If you can’t handle it or don’t understand it, that’s likely not my problem, but an issue arising from your own biases, limited experience, and struggling with the challenge of integrating what I have decided to share with you.
So, before you have a knee jerk reaction based on your own biases, please understand that this is good-faith information that has worked for me, my intentions are good and my experience is my own and it’s valid, so no petty retorting or pseudo-debating is going to change that. I put in the time and made the mistakes, so others won’t have to. This is intended to help people. I suspect there are others out there who have mistyped, but not for the reasons you may think. If the information doesn’t work for you, then set it aside. Suffice to say you’ll be confronted with plenty of that in your life anyway (but I’d try to take this seriously first, because I think it holds potential value for people other than myself).
I do need to warn you that some entry-level logical reasoning ability is needed to really understand what I’m going to share. If it doesn’t make sense to you or you disagree, there’s a pretty good chance that you haven’t understood it fully. Basic education might be needed to understand some of the more advanced logical concepts at work, such as the idea that any given Type X has many different manifestations, and our presumed ability to understand and recognize a type externally is impacted by how we filter our perceptions through our bias of how we believe that type will appear.
Some manifestations are going to align with and confirm our biases about the type, we’ll call these XB (B is for bias, so XB is our bias of how we think type X *should* appear, if we have a bias about that, which is subjective to the person making the call externally), but some won’t – some will align more obviously with our biases of another type altogether. i.e. X->XB, but also X->YB, X->ZB, etc.
This helps us to understand how the underlying Core Type can appear differently on the surface and our bias factors into all of it. E.g. if I come along and quickly say “well this guy here is clearly a Type 8,” and it’s based on the fact that to me he “looks like an 8”, we know there is at least some bias in play (because I don’t know him to truly be that type from the inside)…but I can still be correct, biases can be true sometimes -- assuming I am correct here, then in reality, this is because he’s a case of Type 8->8B. But to another person I might say “well this lady here self-types as 5 but doesn’t seem 5 to me, she seems type 9”. We have to take into account we could be looking at a true case of either 5->9B, or 9->9B. Assuming I’m wrong, then 5->9B would explain how my biases are leading me astray from the truth.
The Enneagram is an interdisciplinary system, it relies on both logical and mathematical elements, as well as spiritual and psychological ones. So not everyone is going to be able to use it effectively from the start. Advanced philosophical and logical knowledge and innovation can be useful in understanding it.
A few questions to consider:
1. Are you happy, healthy, etc? Relatively speaking.
Simple question. Accurately typing yourself should make your life better, and it should only get better over the long term as you understand your type more deeply and apply that self-knowledge to your life. Maybe there’s an initial shock point where you’re upset or coming to grips with your type, but eventually it should pay off as offering a helpful look into your own motivations and behaviors. It’s a kind of way to truly control your life from the driver’s seat, rather than being stuck in the passenger seat (with someone else at the wheel, god forbid).
If you’re just playing out the “shell-like”, superficial role of a non-core type, rather than getting to the core underneath (that’s one reason why we call It the “core” type), you’re going to neglect yourself on a deeper level. It will result in cognitive dissonance as well, causing imbalances in various places, since your core type is still having a strong impact, albeit in a less conscious way. Now if no type works for you and you feel you need to reject the whole system, that’s fine.
But if you’re going to use it, then at least make sure you’ve identified your dominant type properly, as evidenced by the self-knowledge and corollary benefits it offers. Even if every single person in the world says “you have your type wrong”, but you’re happy, sleeping well, healthy, kicking ass in your daily life, achieving your goals, dreams, etc., – then you can be pretty sure you’ve got your type right, period. The faceless masses can, unsurprisingly, be wrong about their views of us.
2. Did you arrive at the typing on your own, and can it stand up to others’ willful, unwavering contradictions, arguments, and denials?
If you were pressured into typing or retyping yourself a certain way or persuaded to stay with the same type even as you thought other types might be more accurate, you could easily have mistyped yourself. Now if you are being partially held in place by others’ validation of your type (especially those in an online community who don’t know you personally), then what you’re probably looking at is a kind of mind-control cult structure. I.e., you’re being subtlety brainwashed and manipulated via fixed ideas in exchange for feeling a sense of belonging and validation about your type within the community. You could easily have your type wrong in this case.
Of course, if you quickly buckle under peeexternal pressure when you naturally start to think of other types as possibilities when looking at your life and The Enneagram, you know there are some manipulation factors weighing on you and keeping you attached to a certain type that could easily be a mistype. In these cases, look not only at what people are getting you to do, but what not to do, which is potentially retyping yourself. It means they’re trying to keep you in alignment with their superficial ideas of you, keeping you constricted and in chains psychologically and spiritually (a slave to their egoic ideas).
If you had mistyped yourself, being open to retyping would be essential for advancing your own insight, and if you can’t even be open to that, then there’s no way you can be sure you haven’t mistyped. And it’ll be hard to break out of it if you feel like you need others’ validation, because all it takes is a few trusted, bad, or misguided influences to keep us locked into mistypes. Not everyone is going to validate our self-typing for us, even when it's accurate. Always there will be haters, hecklers, and trolls online. Our spiritual truth shouldn't be affected by those miserable people.
Don’t let others’ stereotypes, biases, gaslighting, irresponsibility, poor ethics, and bad faith influence you and get in the way of a happier life. Online interactions should come second to your real life, and if one of the only ways your type manifests is via online validation, that starts to shed serious doubt on the accuracy of your typing (especially if your core type and instinct is one of the more frequently gaslighted/gatekept in the broader online Enneagram culture).
3. Have you honestly considered every single type for yourself, across different resources and from different angles, over time?
If you haven’t done this, there’s no way you should be convinced you have your type right. Without that certainty, you’ll struggle to understand yourself and type yourself accurately. You need to understand the entire system anyway. There’s no way you can understand one type without knowing the rest of them. And obviously you need to really consider all the options deeply and rationally, consulting many different texts, in order to get a comprehensive picture. I’ve mistyped at least a couple times, and both were before I really allowed myself to open my mind about the types. I latched onto a description within the first year or two studying The Enneagram and clung to that without considering the alternatives, because I had identified with some aspects of the type but not the deeper fixation. While it’s possible to accurately type yourself from early on, also make sure you do your due dilligence and learn about all the types in full scope, and confirm that you have your type right as you do that.
4. Do you know the main online Enneagram cultural biases, stereotypes, and “rules of thumb” that amount to sophistry? So you can look out for them and set them aside?
These can be pretty quickly summarized, which tend to be some variation of beliefs that: everyone is mistyped by default, self-typed 8s are really Type 6s or sometimes 3s (they just can’t see it), many self-typed 5s and 4s are really 6s or 9s, people mistype as 8s because everyone wants to be “the strong one”, true 8s are extremely rare and even “unicorns” (the true-to-life presumption being that 8 is a superior type to be gatekept and treated like a club), people over-SX-type themselves and most people are actually SX-last, etc.
So when many people go to a popular “typing service” or “typing expert” and are all given the same or extremely similar typings, I find that suspicious and not a reliable way to type. If it works for you, do it, but most of us would disregard those suggestions anyway because they aren’t based on a sufficiently deep knowledge of us needed to move beyond merely projecting their own biases. We might be better off just guessing randomly at what our type is, given how these others’ biases keep them locked into certain patterns of identifying a type for us.
And all of these I mentioned are largely just “status quo” assumptions, they aren’t based on any actual research or hardcore data, they’re mediocre generalizations at best. They amount to echoes in the echo chamber that just get propagated because no one wants to question them. While it’s true that 369 are traditionally known as “primary, relating types”, somewhat more adaptive and chameleonic in their nature, and they’re overall (probably) somewhat more common than the “secondary types”; while it’s true that the sexual instinct is probably less common than the social and self-preservation instinct, of course depending on specific population; while it’s true that people do in fact mistype and there is some truth to these ideas and reasons behind how/why this occurs, nevertheless, these guidelines shouldn’t be exaggerated and applied in an unbridled way, according to our whims and agendas, and used to apply massive generalizations and stereotypes to anyone whose text/video/content we interact with online. This would amount to lazy thinking and turning off our brains, and facilitating even more toxic, robotic, programmed social dynamics – exactly what The Enneagram is trying to wake us up from.
5. Do you realize that your type can only be truly confirmed and known with certainty by you?
There may indeed be some of us, experts, amateurs, aficionados, etc., who are skilled at recognizing a person’s type based on limited data, but this amounts to mostly just an educated guess and should only be done with a low confidence interval (should not be accepted blindly without in-depth confirmation from the person). At the end of the day, it would take a direct, experiential knowledge of your childhood, from your own shoes, to really see and verify your type and its formation accurately. Because the dominant type is developed in childhood, it “belongs to us” in a privileged and specific way. Someone else coming along and seeing us as an older child or an adult and telling us which type we are based on their superficial experience of us filtered through their own biases and perspectives isn’t going to change who we are on a basic level.
We go through many stages in life and take on many different superficial appearances, some of which can serve to obscure our core type (especially in light of this conflating variable of the observer’s bias). Also keep in mind, although we have a core type, we have other types active in us as well. The Enneagram covers the full spectrum of human behavior, and one reason why secondary and auxiliary elements and dynamics like the lines of integration/disintegration, the wing, trifix, and instincts were developed was to express, identify, and map how some of the other types interact with our core type. With all of that in mind, it’s not farfetched to see how we can strongly identify with a type that isn’t our core, while still failing to develop to our fullest, Enneagramically-informed potential.
Good luck to you in your journey of typing yourself accurately and applying that knowledge to your life so that you can be happier and healthier.
Thanks for reading and good luck. Sorry I don’t have time to get to comments. You can see quite a bit of time is tied up in writing this stuff so I don’t have the time for all comments maintenance. I do appreciate you reading this and I hope it helps someone. I want to make sure the book is interesting, original, and covers unique truths I’ve learned personally rather than just echoing what others have said.

2024.05.19 20:39 temporarysecretary2 [Offer] Beta reader for your short stories, poems, books, etc.

Hi, I’ll read the book (or any other writing piece) you’re working on and give you my critiques on overall plot and its structure and development. I’ll also give you my notes on characters and their development. If you only have a few chapters written, I’ll read them and give you my notes on the things mentioned above.
Any genre is fine. Some of my favorite genres are sci-fi, adult fiction, the classics, YA, fantasy, “chick-lit”, and what I usually refer to as “slice of life fiction”. I like creepy books as well. I’m not the biggest fan of hardcore horror books, but I’ll still read them for you.
I love the art of storytelling. I watch a lot of movies, and I write about them. I also took a few courses in literary analysis in college, so I do have experience with criticism and analysis. I, of course, love to read. I’d say I’m not a total speed reader, but I can read relatively quickly. I also enjoy writing poetry and was doing that for a bit for money before chat gpt shut that down.
This goes without saying, but I will not share your work with anyone. It’s yours, and I’m not out here trying to take ideas. I’m only trying to help you shape it into the best version it can be and something that you’re completely satisfied with. I can also help you if you’re stuck and give you suggestions.
$5 for short stories, poems, 60 page books
$10 for books longer than 60 pages
If you can only do PayPal friends and family then I can do that, but I prefer Venmo. Thank you.

FAQ

I live in Cuba/Canada/Haiti/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!
Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.
Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?
Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.
Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?
Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).
Can I donate all my money to you?
No
Can you help me promote my game?
Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.
Your list is full of errors and now the great old ones have awaken!
Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on faith, trust and pixie dust, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

Created A CyberPunk Dystopian Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Novel Set In The Year 2124 In Los Angeles
"The Neon District"
https://preview.redd.it/h6j5xnthef1d1.jpg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2dac28553adfcd5e9a5762f45cecd76ca2071491
I was inspired after reading another user's experience creating his own world, so I decided to give it a shot. I wanted to create a sort of interactive choose-your-own-adventure cyberpunk story set in 2124 Los Angeles. I prompted ChatGPT to essentially create a story and world that revolves around common themes within a typical CyberPunk setting such as rampant crime, corrupt cops and politicians, massive drug usage, mega-corporations out of control, poverty, and technology blurring the lines between humanity.
One of my favorite video games lately of all time is CyberPunk 2077, so I just wanted to create something similar that I could experience and live through in a different interactive way while also testing out ChatGPT out of boredom. Here are some of the results from the simulation.
I'll denote "USER INPUT" as anything I wrote or input, and "CHAT GPT" anytime it outputs anything.
Rules: I will use minimal intervention / altering and mainly allow the program to pretty much lead me through the story barring any world-breaking narratives or plots:
  • CHATGPT:

Setting: Los Angeles, 2124

General Environment

  • Skyline: The skyline is dominated by towering skyscrapers, neon signs, and massive holographic advertisements. The upper levels house the wealthy elite and powerful corporations, while the lower levels are grimy, chaotic, and densely populated.
  • Streets: The streets are teeming with life at all hours. Neon lights and electronic billboards illuminate the darkness, casting a perpetual artificial glow. The air is thick with pollution, making clean air a luxury.
  • Architecture: Buildings are a mix of high-tech designs with futuristic materials and dilapidated structures. Graffiti covers many walls, and it's not uncommon to see makeshift shelters and slums in the shadow of corporate headquarters.

He looks after them like family, but he is also a criminal type in the underground world so a mix of good to them, but can be evil to others. Awesome. Lets start the story now. The story begins with Zoe waking up on a typical Saturday late morning. Friday night was a big night celebrating her childhood friends birthday drinking and partying at their favorite club. She wakes up with a slight hangover and is hungry. she notices several missed calls and messages
  • CHATGPT

Scene: Zoe's Apartment - Late Saturday Morning

The dim light filtering through the grime-covered windows of Zoe's apartment barely illuminates the cluttered room. The remnants of last night's celebration are scattered everywhere—empty bottles, discarded clothes, and the faint hum of old electronic music playing in the background. Zoe groans and sits up in bed, rubbing her temples to ease the throbbing in her head.

Narration:

Narrator: Zoe squinted at the holographic display, her vision still slightly blurry. The notifications were a mix of urgent messages and missed calls, each vying for her attention. She quickly scanned through them, her fingers moving with practiced ease over the interface.
Zoe: (mumbling to herself) "Great, just what I need. More problems to deal with..."
She swings her legs over the edge of the bed, stretching and wincing at the persistent hangover. With a sigh, she picks up her cybernetic arm from the nightstand and attaches it, feeling the familiar click as it integrates with her neural network. She taps her wristband, bringing up the missed messages and calls.

Dialogue:

Zoe: (talking to herself) "Let's see... job offers, updates from the underground... and what's this? 'Urgent Opportunity – High Reward.' Sounds promising."
Her stomach growls, reminding her of her hunger. She heads to the small kitchenette, grabbing a protein bar and some instant coffee. As she munches on her makeshift breakfast, she taps the message to read the details.
Zoe: (reading aloud) "High-risk, high-reward job, requiring a skilled netrunner. Substantial payout. Meet at The Hub tonight. Perfect."
Her thoughts are interrupted by a knock at the door. She frowns, not expecting visitors this early. Cautiously, she approaches and peers through the peephole. Recognizing the familiar figure on the other side, she relaxes and opens the door.
Lucas: (with a grin) "Morning, sunshine. You look like hell."
Zoe: (rolling her eyes) "Thanks, Lucas. You’re a real charmer. Come in."
Lucas steps inside, looking as rugged as ever with his scruff and tattoos. He drops a bag on the table and takes a seat.
Lucas: "I brought breakfast. Figured you’d need it after last night."
Zoe: "You’re a lifesaver. So, what’s up?"
Lucas: "Got a tip about a job. Sounds like it could be worth our while. But first, you need to get your head straight. Eat up and let’s talk."
They share a quick meal, discussing the potential job and catching up on recent events in the underground.

Choice Point 1: Zoe's Response to the Job Offer

Option A: Agree immediately and start planning. Option B: Ask for more details and express caution. Option C: Refuse the job and suggest looking for something safer.
Please choose an option by typing "Option A," "Option B," or "Option C."

Option B
  • CHATGPT

Choice: Option B - Ask for More Details and Express Caution

Zoe: (taking a sip of her coffee) "Hold on, Lucas. Before we jump in headfirst, I need to know more about this job. What exactly are we dealing with here?"
Lucas: (nodding) "Fair enough. It's a high-stakes heist at NeoCore Headquarters. Our client wants us to steal some sensitive data from their secure servers. The payout is massive, but so are the risks. We'll need to get past top-tier security, both physical and digital."
Zoe: (raising an eyebrow) "NeoCore, huh? That place is a fortress. Who's the client?"
Lucas: "No name, just an anonymous contact. But they seem legit. They've provided detailed blueprints and security protocols. Still, I get it if you’re hesitant. This one's big."

Choice Point 2: Zoe's Next Action

Option A: Accept the job but suggest taking extra precautions and planning thoroughly. Option B: Contact Marcus "Iron Hand" Kane for his advice and see if he has any additional information or support. Option C: Investigate the client further to ensure their legitimacy before making a decision.
That's all i have so far but this was a super cool way to pass some time on a Sunday. I am considering starting a parallel story similar to this but a horror-survival one, similar to something like the original Silent Hill etc.
What do you guys think - Anyone interested in seeing how this develops?!

2024.05.19 20:00 AutoModerator Ensuring Academic Integrity Through the Ethical Use of Purchased Papers

While it is important to approach such services with caution, I can provide some information on how to intelligently use the products you receive and the potential benefits they can offer:
  1. Research Guides: Instead of turning in purchased papers, students can use them as research guides. They can analyze the points made throughout the paper and utilize the sources provided. This can help with understanding the topic better and serve as a starting point for developing their own arguments and ideas.
  2. Developing Supporting Points: A well-crafted paper from an expert writer can help students develop supporting points for their own essays. By examining how the writer presented and supported their arguments, students can learn how to structure their own ideas effectively.
  3. Rebuttals and Closing Statements: Purchased papers can also serve as inspiration for developing rebuttals and closing statements. Students can analyze how the writer addressed counterarguments and crafted their concluding remarks, providing insights and ideas for their own work.
  4. Study Material: The projects received from academic writers can act as study materials for upcoming exams or tests. Having the content organized and structured by an expert in the subject can help students review and consolidate their understanding of the topic.
Regarding academic blogs or businesses, hiring freelance writers with legitimate credentials can indeed add credibility and expertise to academic articles, SEO content, or social media pages. It is important to ensure that the writers have the necessary qualifications and expertise in their respective fields to maintain the integrity of the content being produced.
However, it is essential to emphasize the ethical use of these services. Students should never submit purchased papers as their own work, as it constitutes plagiarism and goes against academic integrity. Instead, the focus should be on utilizing these materials as learning aids, research guides, and sources of inspiration to enhance one's own understanding and academic development.

2024.05.19 19:56 PumaZoomah Class breakdown and how people who suck at combat can contribute.

14 classes — 8 are combat only, 6 also have Command or logistics support functions.
Combat only (57% of classes):
Rifleman, Assault, Auto-Rifle, MG, AT, Tank Commander, Tank Crew, Sniper
Combat + Command/ or logistics type function (43% Of classes):
Commander, SL, Spotter, Medic, Support, Eng
If you’re playing a combat only class, then, aside from being a Cap weight point (or 3), your combat results determine your effectiveness. The MG can sort of get away with being a suppressive fire contributor without killing a lot of enemy. On the flip side for Support, aside from dropping a crate every 2.5 (if you were blessed by a manpower node) or 5 minutes, you’re mainly a combat troop, too.
People can argue Sniper has ancillary sabotage functions, which is true, but it’s still mainly a combat class.
Tank crews need to be good at combat in a different way but a tank crew that doesn’t score kills isn’t a good tank crew.
Players who aren’t great at FPS games/combat can still excel at the following Command or Logistics roles.
Commander: building garrisons, using abilities providing direction, and good marks/comms make infantry combat a secondary or tertiary function.
SL: similarly, placing good OP’s, helping build garrisons, and good marks/comms make combat secondary.
Spotter: you kind of have to be combat capable enough to suppress arty but you can always have your sniper do that and be good with sabotage/enemy garri and node takeouts, good marks/comms, flare support, and garri building.
Medic: revives > kills. Surviving also helps.
Engineer: building nodes and structures + repairing tanks contributes greatly even if you never see the enemy.
Support: sort of a hybrid class but, by being on the spot with supplies and helping the engineers, a Support player can get away with poor combat skills.
Any counter-arguments? I believe a team with good logistics and competent combatants is superior to a team with skilled combatants but poor logistics. However, a team with ineffective combat class players will lose to a team with skilled combatants if both teams’ Command/logistics players are in the same very general ballpark of skill.

2024.05.19 19:48 I_Eat_Pork "The Luciferian Intellect" - Explaining why Jordan Peterson really dislikes Destiny.

Of course, if you're here you have seen the recent clip wherein Jordan Peterson calls Destiny out for "wanting to be right", because he has a "Luciferian intellect". And if you're anything like me your first reaction was something like "lmao, what?". If anything was clear from that conversation, it was that Peterson wanted to be right as much as Destiny - probably more. I vividly remember him angrily shouting "What do you make of the excess deaths!?". Jordan Peterson also talked and interupted way more than Destiny did. How could he think that Destiny is the Luciferian one?
I think the key is when he says:
I usually talk to people who want to talk. And I can disagree with them. I disagree with Russell Brand about lots of things we get along just fine. And the reason for that is that Russell talks and listens. He isn't hitting me with a hammer trying to be right. And so I don't like those arguments, I don't like arguments. You know and people don't like arguments generally, this is why Joe Rogan is so popular. Rogan doesn't argue and he isn't trying to be right
For a sense of what the interactions between Jordan and Brand look like see this clip. Jordan claims he likes to "talk to people that want to talk", but Russell doesn't speak a word for the first 6 minutes of this clip! When he finally does speak it is mostly to say that Peterson is correct. What JBP likes about Russell Brand (and implicitly what he wants from Destiny) is that he listens and agrees without pushing back basically at all. Joe Rogan is similar - or at least was similar before covid. A classic Rogan episode looks like several hours like this. His guest talks a lot and Rogan says "yeah right" ever so often in short and longer ways.
Is Jordan just a narcissist then? While I do think he is quite prideful (Ironically evident from when he made a video denouncing (gay) pride). I think there is more going on here though. Peterson praises Rogan, even though the latter is usually interviewing someone other than Jordan. And I want you to contrast the Russell clip from before with this one with Roger Penrose. It is a lot like the previous one, but now the roles are reversed. This time Jordan Peterson barely talks and only very sheepishly on the rare ocasion. Where a normal Peterson clip has him dead center, dominating the frame. In this clip he is barely visible in the corner of the frame. Even his posture (when you see it) is much more demure. What is the differentiating factor?
Putting it all together, the anwer is probably hierarchy. Hierarchies are extremely important to how Peterson sees the world. Important enough to make it the first thing to talk about in his 12 rules for life lecture. In a story about wrens he suggest that hierarchies are important because it allows everyone to distribute resources with a minimum of violence, and in humans it allows us to engage in positive sum games. Peterson respects hierarchies greatly. Meritocratic ones yes, but also the monarchy.
Penrose is older and more accomplished than Peterson is. Jordan recognizes that a reasons to regard his guest as higher on the hierarchy than himself, and his behavior changes accordingly. But when he talks to Russell Brand or Destiny (who are much younger and have less status), he expects the same sort of behavior in return. Russell obliges. But Steven does not. That is because he conversations as much more symmetric. Destiny will generally tend to defer to experts on topics he doesn't know much about, but fundamentally ideas have to stand on their own merit in Steven's eyes - not the merits of their speaker. He doesnt feel any reservation talking back. But to Jordan, that is an challenge to the hierarchy and a play for status. He says as much in the original clip. In Paradise Lost, Lucifer damns the cosmos precisely because he rebels against the Godly ordained hierarchy. This is how Destiny is like Lucifer in Jordan Peterson's eyes.

2024.05.19 19:40 guest271314 [AskJS] How would you create an ext4 inode/directory byte by byte on Linux in the browser?

We can create files and directories in the browser multiple ways. On all modern browsers we can create and download files using File API and element with download attribute set, or use window.open() with a Blob URL or Data URL, or use a
to make a GET request, in brief see How to download a file without using element with download attribute or a server?.
On Chromium based browsers WICG File System Access API is shipped (see Window: showDirectoryPicker() method and FileSystemDirectoryHandle), so we can do something like this which creates the "writable" director on the local filesystem.
``` const dir = await showDirectoryPicker({ mode: "readwrite", id: "mkdir" });
const handle = await dir.getDirectoryHandle("writable", {create: true}); ```
Reading Linear (Classic) Directories we find a table reflecting the basic ext4 directory structure.
In theory we should be able to write those bytes to an ArrayBuffer using a DataView object so we can set the expected endianess, pass the ArrayBuffer to a Blob with type set to inode/directory, download the Blob using an element with download attribute set and get a directory in the filesystem.
This is the start of my attempt
var ab = new ArrayBuffer(263); var view = new DataView(ab);
Not sure what to set as the inode number at offset 0x0.
Has anybody tried doing this manually/programmatically in the browser on Linux?
Looking for insight - sound design
Hello!
https://modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2467415
I've been making modules for the past few years now and I'm looking to invest into a proper setup. I'm planning around a 60hp 6u custom case due to space constraints. I could bump up a few hp if there is a compelling argument, but more than 64. You can see it has a lot of classic modules in there, but I'm curious if you have suggestions or insights into alternative choices that may open up more functionality or break out from more conventional modules.
My primary purpose for this synth is to use it as a development system for testing modules, as well as a tool for sound design in a ui/ux context. I'd also like it to be a fun platform to just mess around with as an signal processor for guitar or other synths. I'd consider it aligned moreso with a west-coast style than east-coast.
I currently have the pico system and I appreciate the amount of functionality in one unit, but I'd be open to selling it and breaking that portion down to other modules if they can match the general amount of functions that it provides. The wavefolder is pretty much locked in, I think it sounds great and I have my heart pretty set on the spring reverb as well, but could be convinced otherwise if it sucks (i've heard it's noisy w digital modules?). The quad vca seems solid as well, the expo-linear is really important to me and maths seems to be very utilitarian. I'm stoked to jump into the daisy seed for development purposes and between that and the O_C I think they would cover a lot of bases for sequencing, quantizing, that sort of stuff.
TL:DR
  1. Should I go slightly bigger? What would you recommend adding to persuade me?
  2. Would it be worth replacing the pico synth with individual modules? I'd be interested in a complex oscillator like the piston honda, some sort of buchla sounding LPG, maybe some fx like the soma labs lyra. Bulk functionality vs a bit more precision I guess.
  3. Lastly, is maths the best fit for something like this? Vs like quadrax or falistri or something else?
Just curious what other professionals think! Thank you for any insight you may have, I look forward to your feedback.
My mother was overly worried about me, though I think she is more worried about me missing school than my well-being.
I had my backpack with my essentials, and my flashlight clipped to the waistband of my pants. The only thing she should be worried about is how she will exit the forest, the GPS stopped working midway on our way here, not that it would be my problem anymore.
She sighed, clearly she had realized that pretending to be worried about me would be a waste of time. “If you say so, Emmy. Please just try to be nice when you get there, for me?” I would not be doing anything for her anymore. Now that I would not be stuck with her anymore I would be making my own decisions, but I decided to appease her so that she would leave me alone. “I will, for you.”
Emil managed to find his cabin with relative ease, it was one of the many atrocious looking places this camp had to offer. All the beds being reminiscent of hospital beds was just weird, some idiot must have thought that was such an amazing idea.
After checking out his cabin, Emil escapes it and is outside once more. This place clearly was not well maintained, and he was not particularly keen on being here long term, but he would have to make due.
Now sitting on the edge of the lake, he observes the water. The lake was the closest to a pleasant place he could find in a camp like this. Though he still would try to check out the forest and beach eventually.
