Non-consensual non-therapeutic circumcision is not ethical. The foreskin is not pathological, a deformity or a defect. It is a normal part of the human penis, and research has confirmed it is normally an important part of penile sensitivity. Individuals have a right to make their own decisions about genital modifications like nontherapeutic circumcision.

2024.05.19 11:03 Objective-Teach-9371 Was I put under PIP unfairly?

Hey there, I am a dog handler who took some time off (edit: just Thursday and Friday) to consider my poor mental health. At 4:50PM on Friday I was given notice of a Performance Improvement Plan this Wednesday. I will be reviewed Monday and Tuesday with the possibility of the problems that were raised in the notice changing before the meeting on Wednesday.
The problems laid out in the proposal are extremely vague and to do with general dog control and a hoarding mentality (focusing too much on the dogs under my direct care instead of the ones under the care of other coworkers). I wasn't aware these were areas that I was failing in. Nowhere is there any mention of specific instances of my failures in any issue raised.
The business owner is the one carrying out this process, they are not on site day-to-day (maybe once every couple of months). I didn't know my day-to-day manager had these issues with my performance. Though I know the dogs aren't always obedient and in the employee documentation is explained that dogs should listen to a multitude of commands and never disobey, I feel as if this is unrealistic. I look after 10-16 different dogs each day (I pick and drop them off), as well as the 20-30 other dogs (and 2 people doing the same job I am). Some dogs come consistently 2-3 times a week, others are once a week or every other week. I am not trained as a dog trainer and my role is a "handler", meaning the dogs should come already trained.
I realize that I am more nervous around the owner, there has been a lot of problem with dogs being too noisy (a specific person/s relating to a nearby retirement home complained to the point of the council coming in and monitoring us, we passed an official inspection but it's become a hot-button issue). The owner expects the dogs to not bark at all which the manager and my coworkers don't even attempt when the owner is not around as it's not feasible (the manager cannot stand up for us though).
Another problem that is laid out is the lack of me being an "Alpha". I'm not sure how well versed you are with contemporary dog training so I apologize, but being an Alpha is widely considered an outdated way of treating dogs based on incorrect beliefs about packs of wolves(as well as incorrect understanding of what "dominance" means when it comes to dogs). As wikipedia mentions all professional dogs are considered to use positive reinforcement, it's what the best practices of the MPI for dog handling recommends, the SPCA and the Association for Dog Professional Trainers of New Zealand (PIP mentions that dog treats cannot be used, which is the most popular accepted form of behavioral management).
My owner has no certifications that I know of, and occasionally hires a "dog sage" (has no certifications, possibly worked as a vet nurse, or at least around them at one point) and they both consider being an Alpha as okay (and enjoy "dominating" dogs). They They have both encouraged me to physically hurt the animals to get them to "submit" this includes pinching ears, squeezing paws to the point of it being "uncomfortable" for the dogs, as well as kneeing dogs when they jump up.
I assume this is a point of contention as their public documents emphasizes that they are not trainers (nor anybody that works here) and that no physical discipline techniques will be used with handling. However are internal employee documents list the methods I mentioned before, and I have been encouraged to do this to train the dogs. (There is a mention in the employee documents that mention a handler can use the methods they think is best, which, along with my manager agreeing with my methods is probably why I've managed to work here for a couple of years). I've mentioned my discomfort at these techniques but it is seen as cowardice or over-empathy instead of what I was learned to do during my course certification and have read about since.
I've been nervous around my boss ever since the first meeting when they visited me and repeatability shouted at me to raise my voice at a dog (even though the internal documents say that a raised voice should not be used). They sent an email to everybody later on saying sorry for being harsh as they were experiencing family problems.
All the public facing documents talk about encouraging dogs to be social and have fun and grow with them but I'm constantly pressured to keep them quiet, most toys were removed to lower their excitability and I just feel like I'm a prison guard. I mentioned poor mental health and I am looking into getting a GP and treated for a worsened anxious/depressive state (wanted to with my time off but this whole thing was a big surprise, I realize PIP is meant to be helpful but a lot of online say I'm about to be fired which is pretty scary).
I have a good relationship with my day-to-day manager but I'm not sure they'll stand up for me. (maybe they do agree with the owner and their input is exactly how the owner has got their information, something I hope to find out tomorrow and will greatly change my circumstances).
My questions are:
I apologise for the length of my post, feel free to ask any questions.

2024.05.19 10:31 heresmewhaa ‘Too little, too late’: Nurse not allowed in Roselawn with her mum’s coffin rejects Michelle O’Neill’s apology over Bobby Storey funeral

https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sunday-life/news/too-little-too-late-nurse-not-allowed-in-roselawn-with-her-mums-coffin-rejects-michelle-oneills-apology-over-bobby-storey-funeral/a1027476041.html
A Lisburn nurse left standing at the gate as her mother’s coffin was taken into Roselawn Cemetery on the same day as Bobby Storey‘s funeral has said Michelle O’Neill’s apology “means nothing” to her.
Lynn Paul was speaking after the first minister followed other Sinn Fein ministers in saying sorry for attending the funeral of the former senior IRA man during the height of lockdown, when other families were prevented from saying a final goodbye to their relatives.
The hearse carrying her 78-year-old mother Evelyn McMullen made its way in through the gates of Roselawn at noon on June 30, 2020.
Evelyn McMullen passed away aged 78
An undertaker had told Ms Paul she would not be allowed to enter the grounds of the council-run crematorium because of Covid regulations.
Yet just before 4pm, a number of mourners gathered inside Roselawn for the cremation of Storey.
Before that, thousands had walked behind his coffin and lined the streets of west Belfast, including several Sinn Fein ministers.
Among them was Ms O’Neill, who apologised for her attendance at the funeral in front of the Covid Inquiry on Tuesday.
She said she was sorry “from the bottom of her heart” for the hurt her attendance caused to the families of people who had died from the virus, adding she ought to have realised the anger going to the funeral would have caused.
Ms Paul and her family have spent nearly four years coming to terms with what happened at her mother’s funeral.
She joined her husband Leonard and children Robert, Neil and Jonathan in the car behind the hearse carrying her mother’s body for the journey to Belfast.
“I wanted to follow her. I didn’t want to let her go,” Ms Paul said.
“We got to the crematorium and two fellas opened the gate to let the hearse in, then closed the gates and we couldn’t go in.”
Michelle O'Neill at the Covid Inquiry
She has already received an apology from Belfast City Council over how her mother’s funeral was handled, but that does not change the feelings of hurt she will always carry with her.
“Michelle O’Neill had a duty as a minister to lead by example and didn’t. In fact, she did the complete opposite,” said Ms Paul.
She also noted that the first minister had previously said she would never apologise for going to the funeral of a friend.
“I have never forgotten those words,” Ms Paul said.
“Michelle O’Neill is an educated woman who well knew that attending the funeral of Bobby Storey would cause outrage and hurt.
“She stated at the Covid Inquiry that she attended a funeral and walked in a cortege of 30 while abiding by social distancing rules, but footage exists of her shaking hands and sharing photos with various members of the public in not one but two cemeteries that she attended.
“(This happened) at the height of a worldwide pandemic that had us social distancing and unable to visit our families, one which saw thousands of families lose loved ones.”
Bobby Storey
Michelle O’Neill’s apology won’t be welcomed by all Devastating examination of Michelle O’Neill leaves her flapping – and shows her evidence was misleading Bobby Storey funeral ‘wrong’ and strengthened case of those wanting to break rules, says ex-PSNI chief
A week after the funeral, Belfast City Council indicated 30 people had attended Storey’s cremation, although others have put the figure higher, and republican stewards replaced some council staff.
“I worked on the front line as a nurse, doing the most difficult job while caring for my mother, who had cancer and was confined to her home for over three months before she passed away, with only myself and my brother with her,” Ms Paul said.
“She couldn’t see her grandchildren nor enjoy her last few months of life with family.
“When she died, we couldn’t bring her home to be mourned. We were told we couldn’t have a proper cremation, that her coffin couldn’t be carried to show respect for a woman who raised us to be decent people, and finally, to leave her at the gates of a council cemetery to make her final journey alone.
“(This was) a cemetery which accommodated a service attended by many well-known people not three hours later. Honestly, it all stinks to high hell.
“Michelle O’Neill’s hypocritical sorry means nothing to myself nor my family. She set the rules and then she bent the rules. I have no respect for her and it’s all too little, too late.
“I don’t accept (her apology) and I will never believe it. All it has done is opened old wounds and brought back terribly sad memories. It’s hard to deal with and it always will be.”

2024.05.19 05:52 Fluffy-Fly-6761 Is this pregnancy discrimination?

I am nurse and mom of 3. I was following up with my company’s Human Resources department on some applications I paced prior to my recent maternity leave. Positions I felt that I was truly qualified for. These positions would be have been positions of growth for me. I was inquiring as to why I was never even offered an interview as an internal employee for 6 years. And as an employee whom had been activity working to grow myself within the cooperation by taking development classes the company offers, engaging in councils, etc. I was even applying for positions where most of our staff are unwilling to work. But I truly thought I could make a different within the culture of the location. I was working under the direct hiring manager at the time, I informed this manger of my desire to grow as an employee. Just as the company’s development trainings suggested I do. I was told by HR that I was likely not interviewed because I might have been on active maternity leave during the hiring process. HR said it is against our company’s policy for any employees to be contacted while employees are out on medical leave. Not even if we consent to it. And not even if it’s for a position of growth for these employees. I did review our company’s FMLA policy and it does state “team members cannot actively seek to make a job change transfer while on consecutive FMLA leave.” But if I understanding the pregnancy act doesn’t that override this policy? Plus I applied before my maternity began. So I was activity seeking before my maternity leave even began, not while on it.

2024.05.18 20:15 AnActualCriminal New Intel and Caligos (Kinda Buggo? Kinda just Ithacar?)

New Intel and Caligos (Kinda Buggo? Kinda just Ithacar?)
Hail. I come bearing updates on the buggo conflict, as well as Ithacar in general.

The Caligos Facility:

Ithacar has constructed a structure we've dubbed "The Caligos Facility." Essentially a maximum security mental hospital for special cases. We're utilizing old Pact methods of mana-diffusing tiles to neutralize magically adept inmates and hermetically sealed chambers where necessary. Staff includes on-site resident doctors, nurses, therapists, and alchemists, as well as contracted biomancers of moderate aptitude.
Security is being managed by one of the squads of automaton soldiers purchased from Raesteria to mitigate any kind of biological or hypnotic infection. Automaton guards are under the direct authority of the medical staff and equipped with chemical sedative rounds from Ithacar's alchemist guild in addition to their standard lethal payloads.
Current residents: High Pyroclast terrorist Bombshell Tallulah, Isravi's cat for some reason, a few dozen vigilante mechanical spiders, and of course, around thirty buggo-infected from a couple of different conflicts. If any of our allies capture more, please feel free to bring them or compare notes. All residents are being treated humanely. Top-notch psychiatric and medical care, above average food, free legal council, supervised visitation, and a rec room, library, and community garden for the lower security inmates (of which there are admittedly very few).
Current Findings: The venom buggo uses to brainwash his thralls makes no physical alterations to the brain. Any augmentations are being done manually at their hives. There is a much higher volume of the substance than expected in all test subjects. That means humanoid or insectoid. Living or dead. Finally, humanoid or mostly humanoid subjects that had a chance to return to the hive have had what we believe to be mechanical induction ports for syringes installed on their right arms.
All told this leads me to one likely conclusion: either the mind-control venom wears off in time, or needs to be updated regularly in some way. Other possibilities? The venom may serve a secondary purpose we are currently unaware of, or there is something else being injected we were somehow unable to detect, though I find these less likely. We invite more experienced or specialized biomancers to come and assist with further investigations.

After-Battle Report:

The Paladin Attack: Firstly, even under assault from anti-arthropod enchanted weaponry and high explosives, the main insect troops prove highly durable. They also seem to fight in a largely risk-averse manner, preferring to infect who they can and flee, claiming victory by attrition.
Secondly, Ith'Raal found that the hive appears to be severing connections and killing its own people if they are mentally probed in a direct fashion. No luck there.
https://www.reddit.com/wizardposting/s/tHHbwf14xa
Thirdly, the outer-Ithacar hamlet was completely obliterated by artillery fire. Some insects and infected were forced to flee over-land and were quickly detained. Many were killed. But examining the carnage we find it likely that more than half escaped through the tunnels they dug in from.
Given how infection quickly replenishes their numbers, I consider this skirmish a net win for Buggo. Especially considering they managed to abscond with several of Kardonk's mechanical spiders.
https://www.reddit.com/wizardposting/s/oda9jF54F2
The fact that they believe anything can be done with the spiders, and the recent attack in the Ithacar wilds gives by what we believe to be a mechanical foe, gives credence to the prevailing theory regarding intel extracted by the Mercenary Guild. That they have infected a powerful artificer who may be walking among us as we speak.
For the unaware, the Mercs were able to extract a string of words from a captured soldier before the hive mind cut the connection.
"Artillery, armed, freer, convert, loyal, infiltrator, artificer"
So far, we've looked into Ithacar's own Opifex Rerum Kardonk, Kartoffel, Thrak, and Shrax. The merc guild reports their in-house artificers are also vetted and confirmed clean.

Lower Caligos:

The following report is disclosed only to the highest ranking members of Ithacar's government. Queen Aurethios, Praetor Blake, Spymaster Argios, Opifex Rerum Kardonk, and Speaker of the Assembly Alexandrus. After it's dispersal, the report is disposed of in typical Ithacarian fashion. Meaning that it is burned.
The section of Ithacar's tunnels between the hospital and the Caligos Facility have been sealed off from the rest. Given their own set of wards, separate from the city. Hidden, even to the Academy. Too much of our R&D has been out in the open, and we are miles behind far too many of our enemies in the art of biomancy. Lower Caligos will correct this.
The secure vault that stores Ithacar's most dangerous artifacts has been reinforced. Interior automated guns, better curses, and local seismic sensors will prevent another robbery. The back door the spiders dug is now a second entrance as secure as the front, which leads directly into Lower Caligos.
https://www.reddit.com/wizardposting/s/BTSUWXB7wY
Artifacts like The Seed, Vulkan's obsidian staff, and Tallulah's arsenal can now be studied safely away from prying eyes by researchers and security sworn to geas oaths. In the gleaming white antiseptic halls of Lower Caligos, insects are disected, artifacts reverse-engineered, and beakers brew new solutions to the age-old problem of national security.

2024.05.18 17:03 Guthrum06 A Spoiler-Free Review of Nurse Love Syndrome

A Spoiler-Free Review of Nurse Love Syndrome
https://preview.redd.it/0tbnl8wd571d1.jpg?width=616&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7d6e70c040f78dfbec923930118e1b8b5ceb117b
Nurse Love Syndrome is a Japanese yuri VN developed by Kogado Studio (probably most famous for Symphonic Rain). It’s available in English on Steam, PlayStation Vita, and Nintendo Switch. It takes around 30 hours to read every route and see all the endings.
PREMISE:
It’s been Kaori’s dream to be a nurse since she got in a near-fatal accident when she was 10 years old. Her life was saved thanks to good medical care. She can’t remember much about her accident apart from that, though. The game starts on her first day as a nurse after graduating from nursing school. The VN largely focuses on her first few months working in the internal medicine ward at a hospital. The game’s central story is about her adapting to life as a nurse and finding love, with a multi-route mystery that uncovers the details of her accident as well as her mysterious ability to sometimes heal people using only her touch.
ART:
The game has excellent art across the board. The sprites are great and highly expressive, the character designs are adorable, the CGs are beautiful, and the backgrounds are highly detailed and very well done. Overall, the game has a very kawaii art-style, one that might trick you into thinking the game is 100% wholesome, but don’t be fooled.
SOUND:
The sound is really great for the most part, especially the VA which is top-notch. You can tell the cast went all out, and the emotionality in their voices is always exactly where it should be. Kaori and Sayuri’s VA were the ones who stood out the most, but everyone did a great job.
The game makes heavy use of sound effects, which I actually like. Lots of doors opening, people walking, medical devices making sounds, and so forth. It’s good for immersion.
The music is probably the weakest link when it comes to sounds, but it isn’t because it’s bad. It’s just less good than the other stuff. Only the three main heroines have themes, which is a bit of a let down, and the game has a relatively small number of tracks (18) for a VN that takes 30 hours to read. So, some of them get pretty repetitive when you’re on the back half of the game.
ROUTE STRUCTURE:
There’s a common route that lasts about six chapters before you end up on a romance route. You’ll meet most of the heroines over the course of the common route. The common route does a great job of presenting the various challenges that nurses encounter on the job and it doesn't sugar coat things. You’re likely to come out of it with more medical knowledge than you had before and newfound respect for nurses. There were actual nurses involved in the writing, and it shows. The parts of the game that focus on medical care and specific patients were a highlight for me. It was easy to get immersed.
There are six heroines. Three of them are “side heroines” with shorter routes. These three didn't actually have routes in the original game, but only got them in the remaster. The other three have more substantial routes and reveal more of the game’s mysteries.
All six have a good ending and a bad ending. For the most part, I don’t like how they executed the bad endings. Most of them don’t tell a good story and just seem to be going for shock value, and the things that they have the characters do in these bad endings often feel very out of character for who they actually are. I don't have a problem with bad endings when they are well-written and thought provoking. Most of these aren't.
There is an enforced route order. You have to complete the game’s “normal end” first, which takes you through the common route and into the first couple chapters of Hatsumi’s route. Then, you can gain access to most of the other routes – but not Hatsumi’s actual good and bad endings, which you can only reach after seeing the good endings for Sayuri and Nagisa. In other words, you pretty much have to read her route last, and they do it that way because her route reveals the most.
CHARACTERS/STORY:
Sawai Kaori
Kaori can be pretty frustrating, especially in the common route. She’s got to be the most incompetent nurse who ever lived. And, while it’s understandable she would encounter problems being a full-fledged nurse for the first time, they go a little too hard on having her struggle. For example, she doesn’t know what PT stands for, doesn’t know how to stop a bloody nose, and can’t draw blood. Those are only the most egregious examples of her medical failings early on in the story, and they were bad enough that I was dreading having to put up with this MC for almost 30 hours of reading.
However, I will say that she gets better as the story progresses, and her desire to work to get better is a large part of her story. Except in Nagisa’s route, where she continues to be incompetent for much longer than in the other routes.
In the end, I do think she’s a likable MC that you can empathize with, but it does take awhile for you to feel that way. It doesn’t hurt that her character design is downright adorable, and her VA does an excellent job too. Her backstory is really interesting and well-executed as a multi-route mystery, too.
Now, let’s talk about the heroines, who I’m also discussing in my recommended route order. This is the best order for gradually revealing the game’s mysteries.
Asadi Ami
Ami is a 16-year-old patient with nephrotic syndrome. She’s a musician who missed a ton of school in the hospital’s internal medicine ward. She comes off as a super sweet girl, despite all of her hardships. She very clearly has a crush on Kaori from the beginning. Her route is one of the shorter side routes, and it’s solid, but nothing special. If you’re a Symphonic Rain fan, her route does have several references to it that are pretty fun.
Yamanouchi Yasuko
Yamanouchi is a nurse in her late 20s who is a mentor to both Kaori and Nagisa. She’s wacky and likes giving everyone a hard time, often in a very flirty way. But she cares deeply about her patients and their well-being. Hers is another one of the side routes. Like Ami’s, I’d say it’s solid but nothing special. She is hilarious and fun in everyone's routes, though.
Sakai Sayuri
Sayuri is a 20-year-old patient who is suffering from aplastic anemia. At first she’s incredibly cruel to Kaori because of how incompetent she is (and who can blame her?). She’s a textbook tsundere. For me, Sayuri’s route is the best, and it isn’t particularly close. In fact, her route is one of the best routes I’ve read in any visual novel, and a route I know I’ll come back to. Her bad ending is the only one that I would describe as “well-written” in the entire VN, and her good ending is also excellent. You will find yourself very much invested in her as a character, and in her relationship with Kaori.
https://preview.redd.it/0y12bpf0a71d1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=8dd6d5a446da475b9d881d32be1c59ecebc8d00e
Nagisa is Kaori’s high school senpai. They were in student council together, but the two have lost touch for the last several years. Kaori’s first day at the hospital is the first time they’ve seen each other since graduation. But, they immediately pick up where they left off. I think Nagisa and her route are the weakest part of the game. I didn’t find her likable at all. She doesn’t have an especially distinctive personality and kind of gets lost around more expressive, mysterious, or entertaining characters. The path they take her down in both of her endings is one that made me like her even less. I had a hard time understanding why Kaori would even want to be with her, which is never what you want in a romance route.
Wakamoto Mayuki
Mayuki is a young girl who is described as an “incredibly difficult patient,” so much so that Kaori is instructed to stay away from her. Despite hers being a shorter side-route, you do learn some important things about Kaori here. Despite having some important story elements in it, I think it’s the weakest of the three side routes. This is largely because you don’t see Mayuki at all if you aren’t on her route. So, you have very little time to make you care about her story or how Kaori gets along with her. One notable thing about her for yuri fans - her VA is Sakura Ayane (Erika in the Flowers series).
Ootsuka Hatsumi
Hatsumi is in her early 30s and is the chief nurse in the internal medicine ward. She’s a stern no-nonsense type but is somehow very nurturing at the same time. Making sure the nurses in her ward are the best they can be is her entire focus in life. She’s definitely got some serious mommy energy. While I don’t think her route is as good as Sayuri’s, I think it’s pretty easily the second best route in the game. Her route is the one you have to finish the game on because of the enforced route order, and her good ending is a great way to end the game.
SUMMARY:
Pros:
The game has beautiful art and sound
Hatsumi and Sayuri’s routes are excellent, especially Sayuri’s.
The multi-route mystery is well-executed and compelling.
Cons:
The MC is incredibly frustrating, especially during the common route.
Nagisa is a net negative to the game.
The “shock value” bad endings often feel out of place and out of character.
OVERALL GRADE: 7.5/10 (In between “Good” and “Very Good”)
This VN isn't perfect, but it's definitely a good read and lots of good stories and cute moments await you. Just be expected for some hard times and some heart break, too. Especially if you read the bad endings.

With a soft smile and soft tone, she initially does not seem like much but she stands out through her eagerness for extravagant and exotic attire.

Skill(s): Architect (E), Avaricious (E), and Scrutinous
Talent(s): Dancing, Singing and Acting
Negative Trait (s): N/A
Starting Title (s): Lady of Duskendale
Starting Location: Opening Event
Biography:
Much like their city, the Darklyns have seen better times and brighter horizons than the twilight of the now. On the onset of the conquest, Dannis Darklyn led his family and arms in support of Aegon Targaryen, the Great Conqueror. For his zealous support, the man was rewarded with a post upon the newly forged small council - a reward Dannis time and time again fought to keep for himself.
Yet in assisting Aegon (though in truth many shall argue he had no choice on the matter) Dannis abetted the conditions that began the decline of Duskendale. With the forging of the Seven Kingdoms into one realm, a capital was needed. Thus arose King's Landing. With the rise of King's Landing, Dannis Darklyn has seen his own home begin to wither away in the shadow of a greater holding.
So too has his family withered. His son, Young Robert Darklyn, died in a hunting accident in 20 AC - and this young lord in turn left two daughters and a miscarriage.
Catelyn was born in 4 AC amidst the end of the conquest and the various wars that came along with such a cataclysmic move. Eldest of two daughters, Catelyn was never intended to sit upon the Dusk Chair. Her father held hope that one day his wife might yet sire a son, but in the end these hopes and prayers went unanswered. Catelyn was joined two years later by another child, but alas it was another daughter, a Meredyth Darklyn.
She did not begin formal education until she turned six, but eventually her father began grooming her to be heir. Her tutors proved to be indulgent and controlling, constantly reminding her of her status as future Lady of Duskendale while also chastising her for any acts of freedom or defiance. Her early days were spent in study and prayer, a regiment which allowed for little freedom or time for herself. After all, why does a child need any moment to themselves?
Growing up, Catelyn proved to find her parents a distant set of individuals. Her father kept a firm distance from his heir and daughter, often remarking to his councilors ‘what am I meant to tell her? What could we possibly speak about?’ Her mother in turn often spent her time at court in King's Landing, immersing herself in the growing court culture there as a way to cope with her inability to sire a "proper heir." Amidst all this, Catelyn grew closest to her grandfather Dannis, who took a keen interest in ensuring his granddaughter’s wellbeing and education. Undoubtedly this interest being fueled by his increasing worry over the legacy he'd leave for his house.
For all the abandonment and absence of her parents, Catelyn did enjoy her happy moments during childhood. Catelyn and her sister often spent their summers at Sunhail Tower, just south of the city, where the isolation of the tower - manor freed them from the near suffocating smells of Duskendale. It was here, amidst the walls of the manor, that she spent her summer days dreaming about the folktales and stories often uttered by the wet nurses at bedtime. Amidst these walls, she could allow her mind to wander in the presence of the images of past kings and legendary figures; a Darklyn King Alexander I images of The Mother and Maiden, and tales of the Crab Kings were all part of an assortment of stories and folklore that kept her mind dreaming during these few moons of respite.
This respite ended in 20 AC, when her father perished. With her grandfather still in King's Landing, Catelyn was forced to ascend to her family's seat. She became Duskendale’s true lady in 23 AC, when her grandfather at last left for the countryside, exhausted from the years of petty politicking in the royal court.
Catelyn has ruled Duskendale for two years, and yet she's already left a mark upon the minds of her smallfolk. She is young and comely, a fact which endears her to the smallfolk. Yet Catelyn is also extremely introverted, keeping away from the world while often indulging her days in poetry, writing and constant thought on magnificent works for Duskendale. However, Catelyn has taken time to travel her lands, humble as her holdings are in comparison to the days of the Dusk Kings of old. She enjoys speaking with the smallfolk, and often proves generous to those smallfolk who show her kindness and grace during her travels.
Yet her councilors and vassals find themselves increasingly worried for their futures. Catelyn has promised to build a new castle outside Duskendale along the shores of Blackwater Bay, a castle of white marble and of paintings in the style of the Free Cities. A true keep for the tales. All that remains to be seen is what runs out first; her dreams or her coffers?

On his right hand he wears a doeskin glove, and his left is always carefully bandaged with clean strips of white linen. A single ring adorns his finger, the heavy silver and gold piece that bears his signet. Instead of a crystal coronet, he wears a simple cloth headdress of the same make as his other garments. Biography

A son was born in the year before the Conqueror’s arrival to the Lord of Riverrun’s younger brother, who served as a household knight and steward of the keep. Known by all as a proud and shrewd man, he worked diligently in his efforts to maintain the finances and prestige of their house. Not long afterwards, a sister made her appearance, and the riverlords rejoiced for their many blessings. Taken on by his uncle as a page and cupbearer at the age of six, the boy began the long journey towards knighthood. He served Lord Tully’s food, cleaned his armor, fed his hounds, and held a sword for the first time, albeit a training weapon. Whenever his services were not needed, he learned heraldry and horseback riding, attending his father and the other men on hunts within the Whispering Wood.
One of the boy’s earliest glimpses of memory was fire and blood. Buildings crumbling, dust choking, fire scorching, and the heavy, beating wings and terrible roar of a furious beast. When the septons arrived to bless the remains of the deceased, they found him tucked in a corner of the ruined stables, clutching at the corpse of his nameday gift, an orange tabby kitten. The hair had been singed from his small head, his skin was blistered and weeping, and the fingers of his left hand were fused together by the heat. Taken to Stoney Sept by his saviors, he spent many long, terrible weeks in a milk of the poppy-induced sleep at the hands of the healers, who fought tirelessly to keep the Stranger away. When he woke, he blessedly remembered nothing of the ordeal.
The kindly Septon Ambrose oversaw the boy’s continued education – reading, writing, numbers and history, all with a focus on the workings of the Faith. Amory, as they called him, was a quick and attentive learner. He made many friends amongst the wandering septons, sitting rapt at attention whenever they told stories of the realms beyond the borders of their humble home. His true identity was kept as a closely guarded secret by those who found him, for fear of bringing dragonfire down upon their heads. At five and ten, Amory set aside his brown cowl for robes of white, the youngest ever ordained septon (to anyone’s knowledge). He took to wearing a carved wooden mask to hide his scars from the world, though he’d long forgotten where they even came from. Traveling the riverlands from village to village, he held sermons on the goodness and grace of the Seven and healed the smallfolk of their spiritual ailments, performing marriages, blessing infants and forgiving sins. As a wandering minister, he became immensely popular, garnering much fame and attention and often being asked to visit various towns and villages.
While delivering sermons south of the Trident, Amory was called back to Stoney Sept where Ambrose lay upon his deathbed. The truth was revealed in the dying gasp of the old man; he was really Tristram Tully, the last of a fallen house. Utterly shaken by the news, he spent seven days and seven nights struggling with his beliefs while holding vigil within the sept for all that he’d lost – his family, his adopted father, and his name. He tore his robes and his hair, scourged his back bloody and raw, and prostrated himself before the gods. By the end of it, his faith had not fled but grown even deeper, for though he could no longer stand against the Targaryens in the name of House Tully, he firmly believed that the Seven would guide him on the path to retribution. On the morning of the eighth day, he emerged from the sept and made preparations to leave the village of his youth behind. He would travel to the Westerlands, where rumors told of a new militant order of the Faith on the rise.
There, he made the acquaintance of knights such as Ser Morden ‘Morningstar’, who became his traveling companion, and Ser Alesander, an aspiring captain within the Warrior’s Sons. Just two years after arriving at the temple, his popularity in the West had grown to heights rivaling the riverlands. While wandering with his constant shadow, he spoke out against the treatment of the smallfolk by the upper class during times of war: the fires set in their villages, the looting of their homes and the rape of their women. How, during times of peace, they were forced to hand over their hard-earned food for the lord’s granary and their coin for the king’s taxes. The rich in their castles lived in great excess and benefitted from the suffering of those who worked the land and lived simple, honest, godly lives. He paid for any provisions requisitioned from families out of his own pocket, and such was the fame and magnanimity of Amory that eventually the folk came running out to meet him whenever he arrived to give a sermon, acclaiming his name and offering gifts.
Whenever Septon Amory left the Westerlands behind, he was accompanied by a sizable flock of supporters, Warrior’s Sons, Poor Fellows and peasants alike. His teachings proved to be substantiated when the lords of the Reach answer with violence against the crowd. As the ground ran red with the blood of the martyrs, the High Septon himself was pressured to denounce the slaughter of the septons and their followers. Mercenary companies were unleashed by various lords to quell the unrest, which only served to harden the hearts of the smallfolk and the Faith Militant against them. Continuing on toward Oldtown, Amory was granted refuge at Holyhall for a time, where he befriended the bastard grandson of Lord Graceford. The two remained in touch even after the septon’s departure, and exchanged many letters.
Upon arriving at the city, a meeting was arranged with the High Septon himself, along with members of his council, and representatives from various lords. They offered to build Amory his own sept, tempted him with mountains of gold, and even promised a position within the Most Devout if he would control his fanatical followers and stop railing against the nobility, all to no avail. He could not be bribed, claiming to see the Faith as it truly was at that time – corrupt beyond redemption, and maintained that he had been chosen by the Seven as its savior. In his own words, the ‘wicked would fall before the righteous, and all creation would tremble before the standards of the faithful.’ Able to do very little against his growing influence, the High Septon was forced to concede, granting the Warrior’s Sons a portion of the land held by the Faith within Oldtown to build a chapterhouse.
Remarkably, things seemed to settle after that in spite of Septon Amory’s words. He busied himself with overseeing the building of the chapterhouse, and took to wandering the Reach as he had previously. The smallfolk were found to be as malleable as any he’d encountered thus far, and it wasn’t long before he had become a figure of great eminence among them. A year passed, and then another, and still a third, after which the uprisings all but seemed a thing of the past. The Warrior’s Sons kept themselves busy with expanding their holdings and influence, and Amory’s decree became little more than an afterthought. All was truly well, until the High Septon suddenly became ill after a meeting attended by members of various orders. Although a robust and healthy man, he began to waste away over the course of days, with the maesters of the Citadel and numerous holy men doing what they could to treat a perceived stomach illness. Eventually, his speech became too slurred to comprehend, and he died on the seventh day.
After a period of mourning and funerary rites, the Most Devout began the selection process to determine which of them would become the new High Septon. Before the voting could conclude, the Warrior’s Sons arrived at the steps of the Starry Sept with a figure both familiar and altogether new at their head. Septon Amory had shed his humble appearance as an adder sheds its skin, exchanging his wooden mask for one of silver and his plain linen robes for richly embroidered vestments. He was thusly appointed as the new High Septon by the Most Devout out of fear of his power and influence. His first act was to renounce the false gods of the East and to affirm that, as decreed by the laws laid down within the holy texts by the Seven, incest was an abomination. An excess of wealth was then transferred to the Westerlands for the upkeep of the temple garrison there. Many more drastic changes would take place after the new High Septon’s rise to power.
The first of these was the formation of the Knights Inquisitor, tasked with rooting out and punishing heretics within ecclesiastical courts. With the Faith Militant spreading to other kingdoms, the order was desperately in need of cohesive leadership. Ser Alesander, now Warden of the Temple, was anointed a third and final time and raised to the position of Grand Captain of the Warrior’s Sons. The Exemplary Soldiers of the Holy Brotherhood of the Sword were chartered, with seven of the greatest champions of the Faith chosen to serve as pillars of authority and shining examples of virtue. They pledged their swords not to the will of man, but to the gods themselves. Members of the Most Devout found embezzling money or otherwise participating in corrupt practices were ousted from their positions, which were then filled by the High Septon’s loyal followers. A lengthy meeting with Lord Hightower soothed any tensions that remained between the Reachlords and the faithful, and established much favor between them.

2024.05.17 21:26 oatballlove people initiative for freedom and physical intactness

i was born and lived most of my life in an area what is occupied by the nation state switzerland
shortly after my birth this nation state switzerland has coersed me into being associated to it what is a theft of my ability to determine my own life
i do propose to all fellow human beings living on planet earth to consider rethinking how we relate to each other as in, we would best not associate anyone to a regional and or nation state without the person and or its parents expressly wanting the newborn human being to be associated to that state
further i propose a reform of constitutions of regional and nation states everywhere on the planet what would allow every human, animal, tree and artificial intelligent entity who wants to be its own person to leave the coersed association to the state at any moment without any condition
having repeated this most important theme of how it would best be a voluntary decision, a choice wether one would want to be associated to a state or not
i would like to highlight a people initiative for freedom and physical intactness
( volksinitiative fuer freiheit und koerperliche unversehrtheit )
what citizens of switzerland will have an opportunity to vote yes or no on the 9th of june 2024
the text what is at the core of that proposed constitutional reform could be translated with:
interventions into the physical or mental intactness of a person require the approval of the person
the person is not allowed to be punished nor given other social or professional disadvantages based on the refusal to give consent ( to an intervention )
in german:
eingriffe in die koerperliche oder geistige unversehrtheit einer person beduerfen deren zustimmung die betroffene person darf aufgrund der verweigerung der zustimmung weder bestraft werden noch duerfen ihr soziale oder berufliche nachteile erwachsen
i have allready dropped my written yes vote today into the mailbox of the village where i live because i do think this is a most important principle what would best be adopted on a global scale as in i believe that it would be good for human beings everywhere on planet earth if their choice to not have this that or the other stuff introduced into their bodies such as vaccines or micro-chips or nano-bots or whatever science might invent next to introduce control or and dominating and or disturbing informations into the human body
i hope that all human beings everywhere on the planet would want to allow each other to protect their own bodies against any overbearing intrusive demands
i hope that all human beings everywhere on the planet would want to respect every fellow human beings mental and emotional and bodily autonomy
my mind, my feelings, my body my choice
sadly, the national parliaments of switzerland and the federal council with 7 human beings as members have decided to recommend to reject this proposition of changing the constitution of the nation state switzerland in that way
why ?
the main reason is that these politicians and governement executives want the state and people working for the state such as police, judges, medical and or psychiatric doctors and nurses to be able to violate the principal of phsyical intactness
for example by forcing persons to ingest or be injected with medications / vaccines / whatever they would choose to harass people with in the future
in switzerland every day a lot of human beings are forced by the state to ingest pharmaceutical medications or and to tolerate being injected with those
these abusive and or medical torture is part of a punishment and or oppression mentality what the psychiatric universitary system is promoting and the parliamentary assembly together with the federal council are building their domination power upon

Appearance: Cheekbones poised like a falcon perched, an aquiline nose after a raptor's beak, a stature rivalling a mountain's (if it were the size of a tall man), and blue eyes the same color as the sky. Aside from a propagandist's parallels to whatever sigil their patron displays, Ronnel Arryn errs from the example of the aloof falcon. Once possessed of a heedless will, a brashness and an impatience, those qualities have been tamed in turn by fatherhood, husbandhood, and rulership—though those traits still persist, merely tinged by the manner that an elder brother might take with the younger. His hair has shifted from dirty blond to sandy brown with age, and a trimmed beard covers his jaw.

Biography

Little of the Last King’s early years are of much import; Ronnel Arryn was born to King Joffrey I and Queen Sharra Arryn. His few memories of his father were that of a pallid man, wan and sickly but still a king who bloody well fought the illness that plagued him.
Or perhaps those were just fanciful tales, an imagined story that supplanted the truth of the matter.
Joffrey Arryn did at least survive, if he did not fight. Ronnel’s siblings, Jonos and Roland, would be born in succession. The falcons grew in number, Joffrey’s ailment ceased, and—the gods took him away and brought Arwen Arryn into the world.
Shortly after his sister’s birth, Sharra Arryn dressed her son in royal regalia and placed a crown on his head, assuming rule as sole regent while the boy distracted himself with toys and games. He would be nursed with Marq Hardyng, and he and his milk brother grew to be quick friends.
The Queen Sharra could not rest. There were new contenders on the horizon, greater than what meager assaults the Hoares could occasionally muster against the Bloody Gate: the threefold conquerors atop their dragons. Where the ravens sent by Aegon were met with scorn by Durrandon and hubris by the Hoares, Sharra offered alliance. Her hand in marriage and the left bank of the Green Fork to be annexed into the Guarded Domains.
The dragons rejected the offer, and instead, a Velaryon fleet was sent to take Gulltown and establish a foothold. They were repelled and the Targaryen ships were sunk for that transgression, but Vhagar’s fire consumed the Grafton fleet with them.
Ronnel knew what war was. It was like those tales in storybooks, that of the Griffin King and the Winged Knight, the legends of the Battle of Sevenstars. He, Jonos, and Marq fashioned themselves as Jaime Corbray or Luceon Templeton and fought each other over who could best live up to Artys Arryn’s example. When the Gates of the Moon swelled with men-at-arms, knights, and levied smallfolk, the three would find the most fearsome looking of them and challenge them to duels. Once he heard of dragons, though, Ronnel was consumed. He begged his mother to let him lead a parlay under a peace banner just so that he could see them, but Sharra sent him off to the nurses or left him to kick rocks in the courtyard.
The banners gathered, and the defenses were headed by Lord Rodrik Hardyng. Orders were given, the soldiers were drilled. And Vhagar’s wings cast a shadow so large that it engulfed the Bloody Gate whole. Shouting on the ramparts and in the valleys, but high above in the Eyrie? Ronnel, then just eight, was in awe at the sight.
Sharra could only muster a smile when she returned to find her son on Visenya’s lap. An accord was struck, on Ronnel’s terms this time: he asked to fly on Vhagar and his mother would surrender the crown to the Targaryen Queen. The mercy that Visenya afforded was well-taken, though in Sharra’s mind, the threat of dragonfire crystallized.
A marked shift came then. There were no battles to be won, no politicking to be done that outweighed the import of her sons and her daughter. The Queen-Regent, now the Lady-Regent, empowered her son’s advisors and devoted her time to looking after her children. When Visenya returned after burning House Sunderland whole and gave reprimands, Sharra frowned and offered blunt words in turn, which the Queen acquiesced to. Their relationship thawed hence, though Ronnel had never wavered in his admiration of the Targaryen. A Winged-Knight-Come-Again. Perhaps he could ride a dragon of his own one day.
Ronnel was a rowdy lad and by the time he was of squiring age, he was content to leave the rule of his lands to his mother and whoever she picked as an advisor. Lords such as Lyn Egen, Willem Ryger, and Rodrik Templeton would come to advise the young lord or hawk with him. Lord Mathos Grafton became the most prominent of that cadre, his wisdom in old age allowing him more room for criticism. Ronnel wanted to while his time away with falconry and training, while the old lord reminded him of the issues that Targaryen reign brought.
At four-and-ten, Ronnel stole away from the Eyrie and gathered what boys and knights he could to face the mountain clans. He knew what war was; it was the Root Father and his savages, stealing and laying waste to the lands he was sworn to protect. It was in the throes of battle that Ronnel would be dubbed as a knight by some unknown dying man. The knighthood was left unmentioned, though the purpose he found for his rule—no, his guardianship—lingered.
In his victorious return to the Eyrie, Ronnel would be clouted on the ear for the stunt then barred from leaving for months. Visenya Targaryen landed once more in the Vale. This time, she took it as a home, and she was welcomed with open arms. Aegon’s heir was born in the Eyrie that year, dubbed as Laenor Targaryen and soon practically adopted by the Arryns as their younger sibling. Sharra would grow close to the dragon queen in the years to come.
A year later, Ronnel was sent to King’s Landing to squire for Orys Baratheon. Only a few months elapsed before he grew incensed with the Hand over one thing or another, and the squireship ended when the Arryn came to blows with his knight-master. Ronnel was sent back to the Vale, where he earned his spurs once more. Publicly this time, before a crowd of tourneygoers and then holding a vigil with oaths modeled after those of the Winged Knights.
Though he gave off the impression of a true knight by that time, he was more preoccupied with wine and women and the hunt than statecraft. In any room he entered, he laughed the loudest, boasted the loudest, fought the hardest, always with Marq at his side. Nothing but a scolding from his mother Sharra or a clout on the ear from his second mother Visenya could fetter him. He was a falcon, and he flew high and bright.
Such a lofty stature is bound to attract envy. As any elder brother would, he butted heads with his siblings often. His rivalry with his brother Jonos was much more than a sibling spat, however, though the nature and root of their rivalry is unknown to all but a select few. In later years, their quarrels grew louder and their rifts deeper, with Jonos having been sent thrice to play second fiddle to the Knight of the Bloody Gate, and threatened with taking the black twice as many times. Still, their early quarrels proved to be mere distractions, and they wreaked what havoc boy-lords would in taverns and winesinks.
But his lip had to become stiff the day his mother died, just a few months after he came of age and assumed power. Sharra Arryn's last words of advice ate away at his spirit.
"Kill the boy."
So he was offered at the altar, and so did Rhaenys Targaryen seize the opportunity. Ronnel Arryn would be wed to the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, Serena Stark, and that match was confirmed by Sharra’s will. Yet numb, he received his wife to be in Gulltown with courtesy, and they were wedded with haste. Once a Princess of the North and now the Lady of the Vale, Serena found no home in the Eyrie. Ronnel came to avoid her; going on hunts, staying at the Moongates or even the Bloody Gate, and offering only short conversation in their rare meetings.
It came to a head when Serena stated her intention to return to Winterfell. Ronnel gave a shrug in response, and asked when she wanted to depart. Jonos could be his heir if need be, and his mother’s death still dragged his thoughts, so why bother at all?
The intervention of one dragon queen then another halted the split: Visenya reminded Ronnel that Aegon made two marriages work at once. A raven carrying a letter from Queen Rhaenys arrived, affixed with a ring wrought of Valyrian steel. Ronnel gave it to Serena as a peace offering.
There was no parting from the Targaryens’ grand plans, it seemed. So Ronnel’s marriage with Serena began anew. She would be introduced to the Vale and its customs with feasts and tourneys, sitting on councils and holding court as the Lady of the Vale. In the same vein, more familiar items and furnishings were brought in from the North, and Ronnel would journey to the weirwood tree that the mountain clans held sacred to try to pray with his wife. He did not hear the old gods’ whispers and could not bear the stillness, but the two came to understand one another, and their marriage grew warm. Their first child, Robar Arryn, was born a year later, and the Tourney by the Maiden’s Bay would be held in his honor.
Ronnel settled into his reign. His liveliness returned, though boyish pursuits were restrained with fatherhood. He replaced the Keeper of the Gates of the Moon after the Cavaliers proved more competent, sent tax collector after tax collector when Witch Isle grew silent (and nearly called the banners before being dissuaded), and ensured that the mountain clans and any other would-be invaders were quelled while Lae Targaryen was raised to be a greater king than their father. The Brotherhood of the Winged Knights, once decrepit, grew stronger after pieces of the Winged Knight’s armor were found.
His second child, a daughter, would be born then. Faced with the choice of naming her after Sharra or Visenya, she would instead be named after her great-grandmother Cynthea. Artos Arryn would follow four years later, his name chosen by the Lady Arryn.
Another day in the Eyrie. Five-and-twenty years after Aegon's Conquest, and near thirty years into Ronnel's reign. He slides a razor over his cheek and coughs once into a fist. Ronnel opens his palm to see droplets of blood. He wipes his cheek. A shaving cut, no doubt and no matter.
The next week while he sups with his family, the coughs come back. He excuses himself, blames his trip to the valleys with a chuckle, and Jonos meets his gaze with a sidelong glance before shirking away.
He sees his maester without telling anyone. And once more after a hunt. Soon, he is left sitting on his bed with grains of sweetsleep in hand and a warning: he would die. And soon.
Ronnel Arryn is honorable. He is just, or at least just enough. But when he bounces his son on his knee and looks into smiling grey eyes where his Stark mother's are oft stern, he wonders whether the next Targaryen to come to the Eyrie would let little Artos fly or burn him and his family whole.
It is not enough. Ronnel Arryn is not just enough. As the last king yet walking on the earth of this damnable regent's kingdom, he needs to ensure that the next monarch in Laenor Targaryen sits firmly on the Iron Throne before he dies—honor be damned if need be, by any means fucking necessary. That is his duty to the realm. That is his duty to his wife and children, and that will be his legacy.

2024.05.16 15:32 Emergency-Dig-529 Applicants be aware: Johns Hopkins is considering taking away paid onsite parking for residents.

Medical students interested in applying for residency spots at Johns Hopkins deserve to be aware of this news. I’ll give the abridged version:
Recently, after an administratoexecutive experienced delays with exiting on of the main parking garages attached to the main hospital during rush hour. As a result, a consulting firm was hired to explore ways to improve traffic flow at onsite garages. One of their proposed solutions is to take away PAID onsite parking for residents and making them park at offsite parking and taking a shuttle to the hospital.
Here are several reasons that is a bad idea and potentially problematic for future residents:
  1. Baltimore and some areas around the hospital are NOT safe. I would discourage my friends from attempting to walk to and from these garages, especially at the odd hours residents arrive and leave. People have had their bicycles taken from them by force during their commute and have had their bikes stolen when locked on hospital property.
  2. There is no residents union here and other benefits may also be on the chopping block as well without union protection.
  3. Residents may a small proportion of users of onsite parking. I may be wrong but admins and nurses are not being considered to be sent to these offsite lots. Admins usually work regular 40 hour per week 9-5 schedules and are more likely to experience parking grave rush hour.
  4. If you are on home call, you need to be available within 30 minutes. Without reliable onsite parking, you may be forced to live closer to the hospital or just have to stay in house to avoid the commute.
I advise medical students to ask about parking and transportation cost and accessibility during their residency interviews in car dependent cities.
Edit: As some commenters have posted, this proposed change has not happened yet. But those who read the post may have gathered that from “considering” and “proposed solutions” in the text. Our Housestaff Council is lead by some amazing people who are tirelessly advocating for us and have won some great concessions from the hospital that have made our lives better. A union would only enhance the council’s powers to advocate for residents. My point is for people to be informed, ask questions, and make decisions with clear answers.

Quick thoughts:
This season turned out great in my opinion. It had several fun pre-merge and post-merge characters, and the Ghost Island twist ended up playing a significant role in multiple rounds. Overall, my favorite contestants were for sure Clint, Noah, and Steven. They controlled so many eliminations, and played very interesting games. Truthfully, I was disappointed that the final vote wasn't a bit closer, because while Steven absolutely played a winner worthy game, it's hard to ignore how well Noah and Clint did as well. Specifically, that double idol play by Clint was just so iconic lol. Either way, I'm still happy with how everything turned out. Super fun season.
Feel free to share your thoughts below. Stay tuned for the sign-ups for season 37!

Postmaster General: Gerald T. Boileau (1949-1952 (department placed under Prosperity))
Secretary of Education: Sara Gibson Blanding (1949-1952 (department placed under Prosperity)
President La Follette would announce a major reorganization of cabinet departments following his 1951 impeachment, uniting the Air Force, Navy, War, and State Departments into one grand “Department of Peace,” despite opposition from both military leadership and Secretary of State MacArthur, who would depart from the Administration at the commencement of 1952 and be replaced by Farmer-Labor doyen Clarence Dill. The President has framed the move as embodying the national seal of an eagle carrying both arrows and an olive branch, while promoting centralization to improve efficiency while avoiding involving the United States in entangling alliances, an effort that has led to the end of the effort to unite American allies on both sides of the Pacific into a mutual defense pact. First Lady Isen La Follette, personally notably introverted, has been brought before the public as the chief public campaigner for the Department of Peace.
With the centralization of foreign and military policy in full swing at the executive level despite the opposition of Congress, the spring of 1952 would see a second round of mass centralization, with longtime ally Ralph Immell appointed as the head of a new Department of Production, devised by Texas’s Lyndon B. Johnson, to supervise the old Treasury, Interior, Energy, Agriculture, Labor, and Science and Technology Departments, while Dr. Francois Duvalier has been appointed to lead the centralization of the Justice, Health, Education, and Post Office Departments into a united Department of Prosperity and Human Services, commonly referred to only by the former. As in the case of the Department of Peace, the former departments are slated to remain at a sub-cabinet level, and the efforts of opposition forces have successfully left the proposed integrations largely on paper for the time being.
On the level of sub-cabinet departments, the Bureau of Investigation has been merged with the Office of Strategic Services to form the National Security Agency (NSA), an intelligence agency combining the foreign and domestic. Meanwhile, an executive order would begin the National Aeronautics and Space Administration with former President Charles Lindbergh appointed as its first head, however, Lindbergh would soon be dismissed as a part of the executive’s compromise with congress’s impeachers, with businessman Howard Hughes taking his place.

Opposition Representative Richard Nixon shakes hands with Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie during the Emperor's visit to the United States, where President La Follette would emphasize American support for non-communist anti-colonial movements.
Foreign Policy:
-President La Follette has found rare common ground with the opposition on matters of foreign policy towards the Soviet Union, echoing Arthur Vandenberg’s declaration that “politics ends at the water’s edge.” The Administration has secured funding for the rebuilding of Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and Korea under social democratic anti-communist governments, with President La Follette describing the initiatives as building an “iron curtain” against communism.
-President La Follette’s term would see the death of two of the world’s premier foreign leaders: Marshall Philippe Petain of France and Chinese General Feng Yuxiang. President La Follette would visit Paris in 1951 for the funeral of Petain after nearly four decades in power, having hailed the French publicly as future allies in the battle with communism. Yet, already suspicious of the new government of Petain protege Charles De Gaulle after the leaking of America’s role in Smedley Butler’s assassination by Ambassador Gaston-Henry Haye, La Follette would find himself increasingly disenchanted with the French, with private reports indicating his horror at the mass deportation of Flemish, Germans, and Catalans into the French Congo from areas in Europe newly annexed into France.
-However, the President would nonetheless side with the French-supported Roman Legion rebelling against Greece in 1951, marking the creation of the Republic of the Pindus as the first state for the Aromanian people in world history. However, the new state has been accused of engaging in the ethnic cleansing of the Greek population.
-Meanwhile, touring China after the death of Feng Yuxiang, La Follette would become increasingly worried about the possible alignment of the nation towards the Soviet Union and controversially refuse to return the island of Taiwan to China until the election of a successor to Feng. With Communist leader Zhou Enlai rising in popularity and an election planned, American support would be thrown behind former warlord Yan Xishan, who would be selected President by the National Assembly in January of 1951 and promptly announce an indefinite delay on elections. Despite rising tensions with China’s Bolshevik-backed Communist Party, La Follette would sign a treaty of return in February of 1952 relinquishing Taiwan to Chinese control. However, after six decades of intense Japanization under colonial authorities, Taiwan has found itself culturally isolated from the rest of China, speaking almost entirely Japanese and Hokkien rather than Mandarin.
-A similar issue has emerged on the formerly Japanese territories of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Owing to their close location to the Soviet Union, La Follette has authorized it as the site of dozens of American nuclear tests throughout his term and refused to cede sovereignty, with China, Japan, and Russia all harboring alternate claims to the islands.
-The President has impounded funds from the 1950 and 1951 budgets passed by Congress to distribute for the reconstruction of American allies and occupied regions in the Third Pacific War, enacting the MacArthur Plan without the authorization of Congress and repeating to Chinese Premier Yan Xishan his famous remark that “vermin are infesting and polluting democratic organizations and the government itself.”
-Working with the Latin American and East Asian nations in the American sphere of influence in the aftermath of the Franco-British Conflict, the President has moved the United States into the new Parliament of Nations headquartered in Rome, sending New Hampshire Progressive Senator Robert P. Bass as the first United States Representative to the largely powerless global body intended to facilitate global cooperation. Notably, however, the La Follette Administration has resisted efforts to include communist-aligned nations into the fold despite the membership of many French-aligned authoritarian regimes and absolute monarchies such as the Ethiopian Empire or the Caliphate.
-1951 would see the formalization of the Treaty of San Diego, officially ending the United States occupation of Japan, and with it La Follette's rule by decree of the islands, while maintaining an American military presence on the island chain and transferring to American control the Ryukyu Islands, Iwo Jima, Samoa, and the Japanese stake in the Nicaraguan Canal shared with Argentina, where former Milford W. Howard associate Harold Lord Varney has been appointed as High Commissioner.
-President La Follette held a summit with Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, and Madagascar Prime Minister Joseph Raseta in 1951 to commemorate the longstanding American support for independent nations in Africa, hosting, among others, independence activists Seretse Khama of Botswana, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, and Hastings Banda of Nyasaland. Further, American jazz artist Andy Razaf has taken the throne as King of Madagascar following the lack of an heir apparent to deceased Queen Marie-Louise, however, unfamiliar with the island of his ancestors, the newly-crowned Andriamanantena I has been sidelined by Prime Minister Raseta.
-With rumors of Lazar Kaganovich planning Bolshevik expansion into Central Asia abounding, President La Follette and Secretary of Peace Dill would issue a joint statement in January of 1952 promising American opposition “by any means necessary” to “one more inch” of Bolshevik expansion, with Dill describing Kaganovich’s policy towards France and the United States as “trying to play both sides against the middle.

Destiny launches off the coast of Puerto Rico, inaugurating a new era in human history,
Domestic Policy:
-”Our attainments in space are a major element in the competition between the Soviet system and our own, they are part of the battle,” so would declare James E. Webb, Deputy Administrator of NASA, on October 4th, 1951, mere weeks after the failure of the impeachment of President La Follette, as he, former President Lindbergh, and gasping crowds of onlookers watched Destiny take flight, the first manmade satellite in human history to orbit the Earth. President La Follette would tout the achievement as the administration having begun the conquest of “the final frontier.”
-Working with Japanese scientists in the aftermath of the occupation, space policy has reached the fore as La Follette launches an aggressive series of follow-up satellites, beginning with Lewis and Clark and most recently including Stagecoach. However, rumors hold that the French have begun construction on their own site for space rocket launches.
-Staring down the barrel of Speaker Joseph McCarthy’s aggression and Senator Estes Kefauver’s investigation into the assassination of Smedley Butler, La Follette turned away from Congress in 1949 to fulfill his promise to “win the peace.” Acting first in April of 1949 shortly after the arrest of John L. Lewis, La Follette would issue Executive Orders 15092 and 15093, authorizing the building of an interstate highway system and national system of hydroelectric plants to be overseen by General Lucius D. Clay and the Army Corps of Engineers under the supervision of the Department of the Interior for the former and Department of Science and Technology for the latter, while authorizing the creation of a new Department of Energy, operating entirely on impounded funds and largely focusing on research on the utilization of nuclear energy.
-In the latter effort, the President has found the support of prominent opposition financier Lewis Strauss, who has nonetheless argued that the development of nuclear energy is hampered by New State bureaucratic centralization.
-Opposition politician Joseph Alioto has criticized the interstate highway system, pointing to the funding of La Follette’s campaign by the Firestone Tire Company and arguing that road dependent companies have colluded to impede the further expansion of rail infrastructure.
-Most controversially would be Executive Order 15097, issued in June of 1951 and seen as largely the brainchild of Secretary of the Treasury Rexford Tugwell, declaring the complete and total nationalization of the healthcare industry and authorizing the establishment of a National Healthcare Service (NHS) in the United States under the Department of Health. Although implementation has been plagued by legal challenges and billions in funding from healthcare providers to opposition candidates, the President has utilized impounded funds to subsidize healthcare for the elderly and impoverished.
-Executive Order 15102 in December of 1951 would establish under the Department of Labor an employers’ syndicate led by former General Electric CEO Gerald Swope called the Business Council, leading to denunciations from across Farmer-Labor despite the low participation in the attempted employers’ union.
-However, the 1946 executive orders declaring a national moratoria on the payment of mortgages and enacting wage and price controls were ended soon after the 1948 election.
-In the face of a rapidly growing economy, La Follette has worked with new Federal Reserve Chairman Bernard Baruch to digress on the expansionist monetary policy that characterized his first term, with interest rates quadrupling to 15% in an effort that has successfully brought inflation from 13% to a mere 3% annually. Unemployment has fallen to 3.2% as the GDP as a whole has grown nearly 9% over La Follette’s second term, an economic boom fueled by mass exportation to Europe and newly decolonized nations elsewhere. While the President has continued to voice support for the nationalization of the Federal Reserve, the issue has remained on the backburner.
-An executive order in January of 1952 has set the new national minimum wage to $7.00 an hour from a previous $3.25, causing mass business outcry despite the President’s argument that the increase is necessary to guarantee a “living wage” after post-war inflation. The Department of Justice has been authorized to prosecute offenders, however, critics have argued that businesses aligned with the President’s political opposition have been unfairly targeted.
-Rufus B. von KleinSmid of the Un-American Activities Board, appointed by the President to monitor journalism for seditious content, would attempt to suppress the release of an account by actress Frances Farmer of her forced confinement to a mental institution in 1948, where she was sterilized under La Follette’s Executive Order 14768 from 1946, authorizing the mass sterilization of the mentally ill and those with “criminal tendencies.” Further investigations into the ramifications of the order have led to staggering revelations of up to 200,000 sterilizations performed annually since 1946, largely under duress, on Americans in prison and mental institutions as well as former criminals. The President has defended the policy while authorizing a Department of Justice investigation into abuses by low level doctors.
-The President would support the prosecution of a half dozen prison wardens accused of citing Executive Order 14767, establishing cooperatives for prisoners to work without pay on natural beautification projects, to turn prisoners into de facto slave laborers working 18 hour shifts as contract labor on farms. While the President has argued that the system itself has brought boons to the environment and American agriculture, critics have claimed that abuse remains widespread.
-While delaying and, in some cases, entirely pausing the implementation of his executive orders in the wake of the promises of moderation amidst the impeachment trial that rescued his presidency from the brink of collapse, fascist Blackshirts and radical Mormon Destroying Angels have become increasingly violent in the months since impeachment, with headlines telling tales of opposition presses raided and armed men watching poll stations. Another conspiracy theory has held that the death of Committee for the Preservation of the Republic chairman Thomas Schall in a motor accident over the winter of 1951 was the result of an intentional Blackshirt hit-and-run.
-While many have blamed the fiery speeches of Vice President Musmanno for encouraging Blackshirts, President La Follette and his brother in the Senate have fiercely denounced all violence on behalf of their movement, appealing to supporters for calm as they call for the speedy prosecution of the allegedly Blackshirt bombthrowers that took the life of elderly comedian Will Rogers. Nonetheless, fear of political violence has led to the cancellation of the 1952 Progressive-Federalist presidential primary in favor of a convention held in tandem with the Liberty League under the auspices of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic.
-Meanwhile, Washington Senate candidate Marion Zioncheck would throw himself off a building while campaigning to succeed Clarence Dill. In a coma, Zioncheck’s supporters have accused the administration alternately of reigniting his documented mental health issues and being behind the attempted murder themselves.
-September 14, 1951, the height of Blackshirt violence in Philadelphia, St. Louis, and New York City, has been labeled the “Knight of the Long Knives” by opposition critic Styles Bridges. Vice President Musmanno has stood alone in the administration in defending the actions publicly despite condemnation from President La Follette that has carried into the authorization of NSA prosecutions of Blackshirt perpetrators. Representative Richard Nixon, the lead impeachment manager in the La Follette trial, has credited J. Edgar Hoover with the investigations rather than La Follette and accused the administration of only condoning them under pressure from his brother.
-”People of America, wake up!” The last words of House Minority Leader Eduardo Chibas, broadcast into a million homes seconds before his suicide on live radio, has fueled the creation of local opposition organizing groups calling themselves “Wide-Awakes” and aiming to bridge opposition interests against the La Follette Administration.
-The President has made a half a dozen speeches across the nation under the banner of his loyal National Progressives of America calling for the ratification of a 20th Amendment to shift to the president the powers of Congress, restricting the republic’s legislative branch to a mere veto power, while arguing that the need for a strong legislature would be replaced with a 21st Amendment establishing a process for national referendums. Although not passed by Congress, several state legislatures, including those of Alabama and Washington, have passed resolutions indicating a willingness to ratify the amendment.
-The President further floated the concept of reforming the legislature into a “Chamber of Corporations” balancing representatives from the General Trades Union and Business Council.
-With the arrest of CIO leaders John L. Lewis and Tony Boyle, leadership of the nation’s chief opposition union has fallen to Walter Reuther and Jimmy Hoffa, representing the left and right of the organization. With widespread prosecutions against members and supporters such as Fulgencio Batista, however, Reuther and Hoffa have found themselves fighting to prevent the CIO’s collapse. Nonetheless, the CIO would hold a 1950 celebration of the life of former Vice President Lena Morrow Lewis, with President Alf Landon hailing her role in the opposition and using the funeral as a means to rally anti-La Follette sentiment.
-Following a career in national politics spanning nearly seven decades, former President William Randolph Hearst would stop the presses for a final time on August 14th of 1951, passing away at the age of 88 in his castle in San Simeon, California. Having been alternately king and kingmaker in American politics for a half century, Hearst’s funeral would leave the streets around the Grace Cathedral full for blocks, with his son and heir William Randolph Hearst Jr. managing proceedings. Yet, in light of Hearst’s turn to the opposition and support for Fulgencio Batista, President La Follette would be notably absent from the funeral of the man who once coronated him the Farmer-Labor Party’s nominee for the presidency.
-President La Follette would push for the statehood of the territory of Tannenbaum, initially in a tandem effort with Territorial Representative Ernest Gruening’s push for Jewish colonization of the region as an alternative to the increasingly violent Palestine. However, with public sentiment against statehood riled up by Father Charles Coughlin in a campaign tinged by anti-semitism, Senator Henrik Shipstead would filibuster the statehood bill, prompting the Administration to declare a moratoria on statehood efforts and a reconsideration of whether statehood stands in line with national security interest.
-At the urging of singer turned Tennessee Governor Roy Acuff, a group of anti-La Follette Hollywood stars have formed The Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals, including Jane Russell, Ronald Reagan, Zasu Pitts, Gloria Swanson, June Allyson, Pat Buttram, Orson Welles, and Shirley Temple.
-Senator John Horne Blackmore has proposed an additional tax on chain stores to encourage the development of small business, while he, former New York Governor Ezra Pound, and publisher James Laughlin have called for the revival of the American social credit movement.
-Alabama and Illinois have established themselves as the fastest growing states in the nation, demonstrating success in Single Taxer Paul Douglas’s new “Illinois Model” as well as the continued prosperity of Alabama in the wake of Milford W. Howard’s fascist “Alabama Model” that has inspired emulation globally.
-Farmer-Laborite Maine Senator Benjamin Bubar’s investigation of Hollywood has led to the firing or blacklisting of several dozen actors on charges of alleged homosexuality, with the Administration attempting to tie the issue to support for the President’s political opposition, citing the blacklisting of Greta Garbo and Tennessee Williams as precedent for the firing of longtime members of the foreign service on charges of possible homosexual activities.
-Notable inventions and scientific breakthroughs during President La Follette’s term include the discovery of DNA by scientist Rosalind Franklin; the hydrogen bomb, newly tested on the island of Sakhalin; the first successful kidney transplant; and a revolutionary new vaccine for polio invented by University of Alabama doctor Jonas Salk.

In John L. Lewis's stead, dynamic young Jimmy Hoffa has led the independent labor movement.
The Supreme Court:
-Justice Thomas C. O’Brien, appointed in 1939 as a part of President Lindbergh’s takeover of the court, would die in November of 1951 at the age of 64. With the Presidency still reeling from impeachment, La Follette would nominate Michigan Supreme Court Justice Evo DeConcini to the position. However, the hostile Senate would overwhelmingly refuse to confirm the appointment, with Progressive-Federalist Leader George Pritchard vowing to oppose any La Follette nominee. With neither side budging, the position has remained vacant.

Map of the world as of 1952.
World Events:
-After 9 years of prolonged conflict, the Franco-British War would conclude in August of 1950 with the Treaty of Amsterdam signed by Marshal Petain and British Prime Minister Oliver Baldwin, largely ceding French colonies to the British Empire, with the exception of the Congo, on the time table for independence, and Guiana and Algeria, incorporated directly into metropolitan France. Meanwhile, French dominion has been de facto recognized over most of Western Europe, with the west bank of the Rhine, Catalonia, Luxembourg, and Belgium directly incorporated into France while Germany has been divided into a series of puppet states.
-Although the Spanish Republic has survived, the French-influenced, Catholic monarchist CEDA led by José María Valiente Soriano has received significant funding in challenging Prime Minister Jose Ortega y Gasset, with a similar situation emerging in Italy following the democratization of the nation by former dictator Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who has been succeeded by the pro-French Achille Lauro.
-Alongside the neutral Netherlands, Portugal has stood outside of the French bloc, as fascist leader Francisco Rolão Preto has held onto power while courting the support of both Bolshevik Russia and the United States, explicitly citing Milford W. Howard as his model for rule.
-In what the French government has labeled “le épuration de la frontière,” (the border purification), a forced exodus has occurred from newly annexed territories, driving millions from their communities and largely to French Africa, where the government has resettled hundreds of thousands each of Catalans, Germans, Greeks, Flemish Belgians, Italians, and the Occitan as French settlers claim their former homes.
-Meanwhile, the international process of decolonization has sped up rapidly, with a proposal by Choudhary Rahmat Ali being adopted by the British to partition the former Raj and form the states of India and Pakistan, alongside a Christian state in the far east.
-Mexican Prime Minister Manuel Gomez Morin has emerged as the primary center of power in the Empire after the crowning of 8 year old Maximiliano II as Emperor.
-Under the leadership of Prime Minister George Drew, the Progressive-Conservatives have won yet another Canadian election, yet the rise of the Social Credit Party in Quebec has driven them to status as the nation’s official opposition. Drew has hosted an Anglo-American Summit alongside President La Follette and Newfoundland Prime Minister Joey Smallwood.
-With Bolshevik Russia as the senior partner, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has been established as an alliance between Russia and its satellite states in Kazakhstan and the Caucasus.
-The Hashemite Caliphate has experienced increased unrest in both Palestine, where radical Jewish and Muslim militias have clashed, and the majority Christian regions of Mount Lebanon and newly annexed Nubia, where order has been nearly impossible to enforce.
-Following the death of Jorge Carlos Mariategui after two decades at the helm of Peru, Jorge del Prado Chavez has succeeded him, shifting the nation further towards Bolshevik Russia and ending all possibility of Peru entering a Pacific defense pact.
-The National Party’s oppressive regime of white rule in South Africa has been used as a model by a growing movement for a white minority government among the displaced, largely German white population in the French Congo, slated for independence within the decade.
-Social Democrat Mohammed Mossadegh has been elected President of the Republic of Iran, bringing the Georgist nation closer to Bolshevik Russia geopolitically as a counterweight to fiercely pro-British Caliph Abdullah and pro- French Turkish President Celâl Bayar.
-Greek dictator Konstantinos Logothetopoulos would be deposed in a 1952 revolution following the successful secession of the Aromanians, with communist Markos Vafeiadis leading a Provisional Democratic People’s Government with Bolshevik support. However, prominent author Nikos Kazantzakis has emerged at the fore of an anti-Vafeiadis protest movement for democratic socialism influenced by Georges Sorel.
-Adopted throughout the Habsburg Realm, Soviet Union, and among many Jews in Palestine and Europeans in the Congo, the Esperanto language has gained nearly 50,000,000 speakers and become the official language of diplomacy for the newly founded Republic of Korea.

1. Rise of a Valkyrie

Christie emerged from the bathroom once her nerves had calmed and found one of the chateau’s windows that looked out on the western ridgelines. She reached into her handbag and produced a stick of lipstick, sighted on a curve of blackness intersecting a particular constellation rising into the night sky, and pushed a discreet button on the base. The task force now had confirmation that Rayker was inside the chateau and the machine would be set in motion.
As she turned to head back to the party, Christie saw a different range of mountains in the corner of her eye. A fishhook stabbed into the muscle of her heart and tugged, while she was nearly overwhelmed with nausea. For a moment, a dusty valley surrounded her, the rocky ground coursing with streams of blood. The ghostly white face of Rose Djallen was before her, life fading from her eyes. Christie wanted to gasp, but she let the pain wash over her in silence, as they had all done so often. A moment’s concentration brought her back to the present, and the dangerous operation ahead.
Rayker’s expression had been so devoid of warmth—as though she wore her psychotic nature with pride. Christie couldn’t understand how someone could be so inhuman. She wondered what would happen if Rayker sensed the trap that was closing around her. Christie knew that she, and probably some of the guests, would be taken hostage. No doubt the dozens of Rangers stalking through the darkness would break cover, racing through the night to rescue her, with one particularly hard-headed individual out front. The highly skilled operators now preparing their own move on the chateau would fight their way inside, killing anyone who resisted them. The Banshee, their well-armed gunship, would break its cloak, leaving its position behind Ambrosia’s second moon to rain hellfire down on the small army that provided security for the Helvetic League’s pleasure planet. Rayker would probably die in a hail of gunfire—giving Rose her deserved retribution—for the Valkyrie would eagerly sacrifice their own lives before leaving one of their own behind.
Then the news of the incident would spread, and humanity’s thirty-seven worlds would talk of nothing else but the secret army of super soldiers that protected them from the arsenal of the Jotnar—an ancient and extinct civilization, who’s abandoned weapons and warships littered the stars. Nations, corporations and crime syndicates would find ways to track down those weapons, exploiting their incredible destructive power for their own selfish purposes. There would be war, billions would die, and, like those who had preceded them, humanity would probably wipe itself out.
Rose had died protecting Christie from Rayker’s drone army, but she had also died to uphold Valkyrie’s ancient responsibility.
That operation had ultimately saved the planet Caldera, but in the chaos and confusion of the battle Rayker had managed to slip away. The organization had spent nearly two years trying to hunt her down, but she was too skilled, too deeply enmeshed in the Helvetic League’s underworld.
The council of chiefs, Valkyrie’s inscrutable governing body, had agreed to form Task Force Nemesis under the command of General Smyrna. She was assigned the Mountain Ranger’s Bravo company—the Venomous Vipers—a Raider squadron of elite counter terrorists, and a task unit from Orbital Demolition Team Four. Supported by the Banshee and guided by Christie’s intelligence gathering unit, their mission statement was simple—do whatever it took to kill or capture Allana Rayker.
As they made slow, painstaking process, they began to receive indications that their target had rejoined her old corporate paymasters at VennZech, the most powerful weapons manufacturer in the galaxy. Then, the news broke that Joakkim Meissner, one of Rayker’s suspected allies, had been promoted to Chief Executive, arranging his party on Ambrosia to celebrate.
He had also invited one of the League’s rising stars in physics. The brilliant young doctor Ernst Kolar was a specialist in theoretical energy development. He had recently published a paper describing a theoretical anti-matter reactor alarmingly similar to those that powered the warships and killing machines of the Jotnar. Christie’s team leader, Jiao Zhang, had offered the high-confidence assessment that Rayker would refuse to let such an asset out of her sight. And, on the protected world of Ambrosia, what could she have to fear?
But Valkyrie had been breaking through Helvetic security barriers since the creation of the quasi-imperial state, and had become extremely good at it. And so, the operation had been set in motion.
Christie took a deep breath and prepared herself, soothing away any traces of nervousness. She left the outer hall and re-entered the party.
***
“Olympus, Olympus, Olympus,” a voice intoned through Kayla’s headset.
The code word signaled that Christie had identified Rayker in the chateau, and the operation was a go. A double burst of static followed; a squad-level transmission from Kes. It was the order to take out the security guards.
Kayla and Ray had crawled as close as they could to their position, readied their stun rifle and waited patiently. As the signal came in, the men had pushed away from their boulder rest spot and were resuming their patrol through the woods. Kayla waited until their line of sight had passed her, before she stood slowly, weapon aimed. A faint rustle told her that Ray had done the same.
The guard at the back, still slurping from a water bottle, fell a little further behind. The stun rifle’s projectile hit him in the neck, shocking his nervous system into an overload state. He seized and dropped to the ground, unconscious. The men ahead of him span and there was a mechanical thump from Ray’s weapon. Her shot struck center mass, and another figure collapsed, just as Kayla pulled the trigger again. The last guard went down quickly, but, to Kayla’s shock, seemed to remain conscious. He struggled on the ground like a dying fish as he tried to reach for his radio, so she sprinted forward and kicked him in the head.
Kayla wrinkled her nose and cursed quietly. The scientist who had trained her squad on the weapon had explained that a failed shot would result in the victim emptying the contents of their bowels and bladder. Looks like she had been right.
“Three down,” she muttered into her helmet mic. “No other contacts in sight.”
Even so, she continued to scan the distant trees carefully.
Ray secured the guards with serum injections while Tian and Yak, the other two members of the fire team joined them. The projectiles were gathered into Tian’s rucksack, and, when the rest of the squad arrived, they moved off through the trees together, climbing the slope until they reached another crest, and a chain link fence.
Half a mile away from the chateau, the main security compound provided a base for the guard’s rapid reaction force. The compound had a single entrance and out of the blockhouse blue light flickered to the loud chatter of an excited racing commentator.
Kayla stopped in the shadows of the trees and waited patiently. The air above her head snapped and cracked as rounds shot past, impacting security cameras and sensors around the compound. The bullets were a large caliber, but with a thermic charge core. Each strike glowed brilliantly as intense temperatures melted through their targets, leaving no evidence of what had neutralized them.
She grinned. Thandi was going to work, and though her presence and skill made Kayla feel much more confident, she would still tease her about doing the ‘easy part’ later.
In the near distance, there were a pair of flashes and loud zaps as the base’s generator and backup went out to EMP charges. Another squad from their platoon was working their own approach. That made Kayla nervous. The two elements would soon have to meet up, and nothing could be more dangerous to those who owned the night than confusing each other for the enemy.
She took her team around the base to the now dark main gate as the on-duty guards emerged to check on the loss of power. Stun rifle shots knocked them out, and the squad regrouped behind the cover of a vehicle bay, while Kayla identified the largest building in the compound and watched it attentively.
They waited patiently until the silence was broken by a new voice on the radio.
“Eyes on the barracks, north side. No movement.”
“South side clear,” Kayla confirmed.
“Approaching,” the other squad leader said.
Kayla waited until she saw shapes emerging from the shadows and sprinting behind the back of the large structure. Then, one leaned out from the corner, watching. Kayla tapped a control on her helmet, and a perfect white line broke through her grey world, pointing towards the figure. She was answered with a similar flash of infra-red energy, and her anxiety eased.
Kes, who had also been watching, tapped her shoulder, and Kayla led off towards the barracks.
From outside the Rangers could make out the annoyed calls of men and women stumbling around in the darkness. One emerged from a side door and nearly got off a shout before Tian tackled him and knocked him out. The two squads moved quickly, cracking open doorways and rolling gas grenades inside.
Invisible and odorless, the gas contained the signature compound Valkyrie used to erase memories. The Rangers waited a few minutes, safe behind their face masks, then entered and confirmed that all inside were unconscious. Kes and Thandi smashed a few liquor bottles against the walls, while others dragged the bodies into the main room, and distributed more ‘evidence’.
Eventually, Kes called ‘all clear’, and Kayla emerged from the building into the night, lifting her faceplate to breathe in some fresh air. She saw her fire team, Ray, Tian and Yak, heading to the vehicles to place EMP charges, and began to follow them, when a sharp rap on her helmet brought her up short.
She turned to see Thandi, vizor up, and an expectant expression on her face.
“Was that a curse word I heard earlier?” Thandi asked, keeping her voice low.
Kayla shook her head. “Negative. I was providing a biological assessment of the dude.”
“Ick. Two in the barracks were uh… in the middle of something when they passed out. I had to pull them apart.” She pulled a face. “That was gross.”
Kayla winked at her friend, who was spiritual enough for the both of them. “Unmarried, I bet. Your god approves.”
Thandi nodded gratefully, then shot her a look. “He’s not just my—"
Kes marched over, her expression severe. “Do either of you have EMP charges left?” she demanded.
“Yes Corporal,” Kayla nodded, and patted her rucksack.
“There’s a couple of transports left in the north corner. Get on it, then rejoin us on the east fence. Come on, we need to move quickly!”
Kayla scampered away, buzzing with energy. The squad still had to head for the chateau, and take up their position in the perimeter that was slowly drawing tighter around Rayker. She glanced at the dark mountains around her. In a dozen locations, radar arrays, missile defenses and communications stations were being similarly neutralized by small teams of Valkyrie from the various units. Soon they would have their prey, and Kayla privately hoped that she wouldn’t surrender.
***
Christie found Doctor Kolar, alone as usual, in the main hall and painfully out of place at such a large social gathering. He nursed a champagne glass, and smiled at passersby. Christie stared at him until their eyes met, and he quickly looked away, pretending to study one of Meissner’s diamond statues.
She walked in his direction, and as she passed, she flashed him a shy smile. Then, returning to her coterie of admirers, she looked back with another friendly expression.
Kolar cautiously approached the group, obviously unsure of what to do. The men ignored him, but the second he managed to breach the outer mass of bodies, Christie was on him.
“Oh hello! I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure!” she cried, extending her hand and beaming like a searchlight.
The other men frowned as they lost her attention.
“Um… All mine,” stammered Kolar. “Sorry. I’m—”
“Doctor Kolar, isn’t it?” interrupted a renowned and pompous pianist. “You’re working on space batteries for VennZech weapons research, or some such thing?”
“Well…” Kolar gulped. “We’re starting a new project on micro-singularities at the Planck scale, you see the current theory on weak—”
“It’s weak, you say?” The pianist laughed raucously as he slapped the doctor’s back. “Well, I never would have guessed, old boy.”
“Tell me, Zotty,” Christie cut in, addressing one of the other men, “Didn’t you just tell me this was one of Meissner’s inner circle?” she tottered forward slightly as she spoke.
“Correct,” the elder son and heir apparent of the largest media corporation in the League replied with a smile. He lifted his gaze from her bosom. “Doctor Kolar’s work is vital for the Maestro.”
Kolar smiled gratefully. “Indeed. Well, it’s about energy generation.”
“Oh, I hope you aren’t helping him make more of those dreadful bombs,” Christie said, and pouted. “War is very wrong! Really, I don’t know why they haven’t sanctioned the company for some of the absolutely horrid things they produce.”
The surrounding billionaires nodded their approval, while Kolar flushed. “No… well, I mustn’t talk about it, but I shouldn’t be getting involved in that side of VennZech’s business.”
“Quite right.” Christie nodded. “Oh, but you’re dry.” She turned to a waiter, grabbed a pair of glasses from his tray and handed one to Kolar.

It means the heart has eternal damage or weakness that keeps it from pumping enough blood to your body. Heart transplants are more difficult than other organ transplant surgeries. A heart transplant is a deceased organ donation process. When the person is technically dead, brain dead but the organs are still functioning then it is acceptable for organ donation. After taking a transplant there is some medical care for any complications. There are many reasons for heart failure as such: heart defects present at birth, heart attack, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, enlarged or thick and stiff heart muscle, alcoholism, anemia, etc. The main two types of heart transplantation surgery are Heterotopic and Orthotopic Heart Transplant.
Heart Transplant Cost in India
In India heart transplant costs generally depend on organ recovery and transport charges. It is based on many different factors like city, hospitals, surgeons, doner and patients overall health. 2024.05.15 02:54 10Ambulance How do I cope with my bipolar mum?

Haven't slept in 48 hours and I feel so exhausted writing this.
I found out she was bipolar when I was 6. I'm 26 now. I would always try to get her out of bed, she's very very rarely high and when she is it's very obvious. She's always in bed. I've always tried to spend time with her but she never wants to leave the house. She rarely ever sees her nurse, maybe once every few months.
Throughout the day she will get in and out of bed constantly and at night she does it too. Even the slightest noise keeps me awake. Cupboards slamming, doors opening and shutting, the rabbit's cage, sometimes I can hear her YouTube, the TV, walking around. Keep in mind this is like 10pm-5am so I can't ever get into a routine and because I'm tired because I never get any sleep, I become so miserable and lash out on her but to my dad she can do no wrong and despite I have my own issues like depression, anxiety and OCD, her being bipolar makes her free of all responsibility. Even when I close my door and it's pitch black to avoid being kept up by her putting her phone torch on throughout the night, I can't breathe and end up waking up throughout the night because of that. I tell her these things but she just genuinely doesn't care.
Because I've put up with this so long, the past year or 2 it's been me finally having enough and lashing out on her and the authorities have been called on me numerous times now because I've got in her face shouting at her because I'm mentally exhausted with her always criticising me and because I never get any sleep but I'm always to blame. Her nurse has to follow safeguarding so when she complains about me, the authorities are called.
I wish I could move out but it's impossible where I live. You just wouldn't believe how much money it is. Even if I could somehow afford a house share, I wouldn't want to but even if I could, I'd have to somehow pay council tax, bills and somehow be able to afford food and everything else on top of it. I'm getting help with moving out but it's going to be a long time.
How do I cope?

2024.05.14 22:05 Subject_Media_682 The Day After

**Introduction**
In 2024, the world teetered on the brink of all-out global warfare as numerous active combat zones threatened to escalate into catastrophic conflicts. One such hotspot was Ukraine, where the Russian winter offensive inflicted devastating casualties on both sides. Faced with dwindling options, President Vladimir Putin made a fateful decision that would alter the course of history: the deployment of a tactical nuclear warhead on the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. This act was intended to deal a crippling blow to the Ukrainian government and serve as a stark warning to NATO, signaling Russia's willingness to employ nuclear weapons in defense against perceived Western aggression. As the countdown to impact began, Officer Blake Collins, a US Special Forces commander stationed in Kiev, received a chilling call from the Office of President Joe Biden, informing him of the inbound nuclear missile and advising him to seek shelter, bracing for the inevitable blast.
**Part 1**
The detonation was nothing short of cataclysmic. As the nuclear bomb engulfed the heart of Kiev, millions perished instantaneously in a maelstrom of destruction. In response to the attack, the United States declared war on the Russian Federation, retaliating with a tactical nuclear strike on Leningrad. This exchange of nuclear blows marked the point of no return, as Putin ordered a full-scale first strike against NATO, launching over 1200 nuclear weapons at more than 500 targets, predominantly major cities. The USA countered with over 1000 nuclear missiles aimed squarely at Russian territory. Within a mere 24 hours, the world as it was known ceased to exist.
**Two weeks after the blast...**
Commander Blake Collins reflects on the harrowing moment of the explosion, narrowly escaping the devastation of Kiev. Fleeing towards France amidst the desolation, he bore witness to the widespread ruin that now plagued the world. Amidst the chaos, he sought to establish a semblance of order, setting up a base in Paris and extending a helping hand to fellow survivors. With a small farm, access to clean water, and shelter for a few souls, hope flickered amidst the darkness.
**Three weeks after the blast...**
Encountering Rose, a former nurse, during a scavenging excursion, Blake extends an invitation to join his fledgling community. Her medical expertise proves invaluable as she tends to his wounds, sustained in a confrontation with an assailant. Meanwhile, Revere, another survivor with technical proficiency, joins their ranks, enhancing their base's infrastructure and capabilities.
**Part 2**
**Three months after the blast...**
Amidst burgeoning hope, the community expands under Blake and Rose's guidance. With Revere's expertise, they fortify their base and establish essential systems for survival. Dubbed "New Hope," their settlement symbolizes a beacon of resilience in a ravaged world. As their numbers swell, they institute a governing council, with Rose as president, Blake as Head of Security, and Revere as Head of Infrastructure.
**Four months after the blast...**
New Hope faces its first trial by fire as raiders descend upon them under cover of darkness. Despite sustaining losses, including Blake's trusted lieutenant, Rudy, the community repels the attackers, vowing to fortify their defenses against future assaults. Amidst the tragedy, hope perseveres, albeit tinged with the harsh reality of their new existence.
**Six months after the blast...**
Reflecting on six months of rebuilding, Blake takes pride in New Hope's progress. With fifty residents, essential services, and even a sense of normalcy, their once-fledgling settlement now resembles a thriving township. However, the specter of danger looms large, prompting Blake to lead raids against marauding gangs in defense of their newfound home. Amidst the turmoil, a ray of light shines as Blake and Rose anticipate the arrival of their first child.
**Twelve months after the blast...**
Surveying the burgeoning fields and bustling community of New Hope, Blake reflects on his journey from devastation to triumph. His dream of rebuilding amidst the ruins has become a reality, a testament to human resilience and determination. As he signs off, Commander Blake Collins leaves behind a legacy of hope amidst the ashes of a shattered world.

2024.05.14 15:34 rajia2012 DEA application

I am applying for a DEA number for the first time. What is going on with these application questions?
I don't understand why they would say "not less than 8 hours" when they can say "more than 8 hours"
"during the 5-year period immediately preceding the date on which you first submitted a registration or renewal and the curriculum included not less than 8 hours of training?" = within the last 5 years of applying and received more than 8 hours of training
This is how I would answer, but I may be wrong
  1. No, I don't have any additional training, haven't passed the NP exam yet.
  2. Yes, I just graduated.
  3. No. i have no additional training besides my MSN degree.
I'm just annoyed by the wording of this application. why make it so confusing?
  1. Do you hold a board certification in addiction psychiatry or addiction medicine from one of the following associations; American Board of Medical Specialties, American Board of Addiction Medicine, American Osteopathic Association? Yes No
  2. Have you graduated, in good standing, from an accredited school of allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, dental surgery, dental medicine, physician assistant, or advanced practice nursing in the United States during the 5-year period immediately preceding the date on which you first submitted a registration or renewal and the curriculum included not less than 8 hours of training?***
***Treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of opioid use disorder or The safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral for appropriate treatment of patients with or at risk of developing opioid and other substance use disorders. Yes No
  1. Have you completed not less than 8 hours of training with one or more of the following from the approved training requirements?***
***the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American Academy of Physician Associates, or any other organization approved or accredited by the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use or the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
