2024.05.19 13:34 FlyingMitten New FAs not cut from the same cloth?

Living in a smaller city I'm on a lot of Delta connection flights before I catch a mainline out of the larger airport. Either SkyWest or Endevor Air. I've noticed a trend lately on these connections (typically not a mainline issue) where the younger FAs just don't seem to care or want to do their job.
I understand FAs are not paid until the door closes/push back, etc, and that can impact service. However, when taxing or in the air it seems like the younger crowd just does not want to do anything other than the bare minimum (safety briefing, etc). Furthermore, they seem to chit chat with each other or play on their phones non-stop.
A great example was a fairly recent deplaning where the FA just played on her phone and it was a solid 4 minutes before she told us we could get off. I was watching her type non-stop text messages into her personal phone, not the Delta issued phone. I was first off and the gate agent was actually walking back to the plane to see what was wrong. She says to me "no one was coming from the plane and I was wondering what was wrong". Other examples are where the FAs just stand around chatting instead of providing service in the cabin.
I'm reminded of Trudy on a Delta connection. I'm not sure if anyone has had the pleasure, but she is a rockstar. One time we were taxing to de-ice which meant there was a 20 minute lag before take-off. She hustled her butt off to service the ENTIRE plane with coffee and water. The icing on the cake was when she made the verbal announcement that she was not like the newer generation of FAs and that she was there to service us!
Are the airlines just not training people the same way?
Cheers to you Trudy! This seems to be the only video of her I could find.

2024.05.19 13:26 Orange_Menace1 Randyll Tarly - Blackfyre Supporter (my first theory)

Randyll Tarly - Blackfyre Supporter (my first theory)
Note: I started writing this and it got away from me. Rather than fill in the unfinished points, I've just left them there for everyone to consider

Preface

Randyll Tarly on a first read through is a jerk. He tortures Sam, insults Brienne, implements draconian justice and downplays the golden company threat. Prima-Facie, he is a violent commander with little political cunning.
Except for his results. By the end of ADWD
Ā· He receives accolades for every battle fought (I hold fire on the term won)
Ā· He holds the queen in his custody.
Ā· He has a voice at council
Ā· He secured his chosen heir in defiance of westrosi customs
If we assume these things didnā€™t happen by chance, we can re-examine some of his older achievements, actions, and then try to sort out his motives.

Randyll Tarly as a Commander

Roberts Rebellion

Battle of Ashford

Context: The battle of Ashford was Roberts one defeat in his rebellion. Tarlyā€™s van sailed forward and defeated Roberts host, but the battle was inconclusive. Robert retreated to the stony sept, recovered, regrouped, and when his allies arrived and consolidated forces, used this new army to win the war.

Relevant Sections ā€“ directly on point paragraphs:

A Storm of Swords - Tyrion III

Tyrion had to bite his tongue at that. Robb Stark had won more battles in a year than the Lord of Highgarden had in twenty. ~Tyrell's reputation rested on one indecisive victory over Robert Baratheon at Ashford, in a battle largely won by Lord Tarly's van before the main host had even arrived.~

A Storm of Swords - Davos V

"Edric, you ought not boast," Maester Pylos said. "King Robert suffered defeats like any other man. Lord Tyrell bested him at Ashford, and he lost many a tourney tilt as well."

A Storm of Swords - Samwell V

"Your father is an able soldier," King Stannis said. "He defeated my brother once, at Ashford. Mace Tyrell has been pleased to claim the honors for that victory, but Lord Randyll had decided matters before Tyrell ever found the battlefield. He slew Lord Cafferen with that great Valyrian sword of his and sent his head to Aerys." The king rubbed his jaw with a finger. "You are not the sort of son I would expect such a man to have."

A Dance with Dragons - The Griffin Reborn

~He had lost it all at Stoney Sept, in his arrogance.~
~Robert Baratheon had been hiding somewhere in the town, wounded and alone. Jon Connington had known that, and he had also known that Robert's head upon a spear would have put an end to the rebellion, then and there~. He was young and full of pride. How not? King Aerys had named him Hand and given him an army, and he meant to prove himself worthy of that trust, of Rhaegar's love. He would slay the rebel lord himself and carve a place out for himself in all the histories of the Seven Kingdoms.

Other information gleaned from context

Ā· Tarly did not inflict substantial casualties
Ā· Robert won the battle of the trident within a year ā€“ Ashford is 282AC and the trident is 283
Ā· Robert fled to and was sheltered in the stony sept, where Jon Connington failed to flush him out. The battle of the bells occurred in 283AC, as did the battle of the trident shortly after

Analysis

Randyll leads the van some distance ahead of the main force, gets into a battle with the rebels, and inflicts minor to moderate casualties before they escape. Tyrell takes the credit.
From a military point of view, if the battle had not been decided before the main force arrived, the war would have likely ended. A much larger force (with assumedly many more horsemen) would have won the battle both more conclusively, and been able to pursue. By all rights, the strategy enforced by Mace Tyrell should have won the war (this theme will come in later in this theory), but for the fact only a fraction of his army engaged far ahead of the main host.
As an aside and jumping ahead a little ā€“ Tarly avoids doing this after the blackwater, closing off escape routes and slaughtering everyone. This hints at the fact that Ashford was a tactical mistake.
The first three viewpoints we receive on the battle are of note.
Ā· Tyrion points out the battle was indecisive, and ~decided before the main host arrived~. He focuses on the victory in ā€˜battleā€™ as opposed to war.
Ā· Stannis points out how able Randyll is by defeating his brother once at Ashford. Although unable to ascribe any special military strategy to Randyll, he calls him ā€˜ableā€™ and decided matters before Tyrell arrived. He also flags that Mace Tyrell claimed the honours for the victory and he thinks this undeserved. Itā€™s interesting as itā€™s Maces host at Ashford, a host that by all rights should have crushed Roberts army in a single battle ā€“ given the van alone defeated him. He also ascribes the only kill of note as lord Cafferen
Ā· Maester Pylos points out that Robert lost battles at Ashford and flags it was Tyrell who bested him.
The battle by all appearances, was a farce. Ashford could have ended the war. Arguably, even with the van alone deciding the fight, it very nearly did. Instead, the battle is determined indecisive, there is no ā€˜impressive kill and capture listā€™ indicating the host was not captured or killed (as opposed to routed), and Mace has this massive potentially war-ending host not doing much because Robert is in retreat before it arrives.
Furthermore despite all this, Tarly very nearly won the day at Ashford. Robert suffered a serious ā€“ but nonfatal wound that seemingly took months (and at least weeks) to recover. The fact that a seriously wounded Robert was able to escape despite distinctive armour and weaponry raises questions of its own.
Finally, when Robert was wounded and hidden in the aftermath whilst he recovered, narratively it allowed JonCon to lay siege to the stony sept. As a parallel, one of the themes I will later touch on is how Tarly changes after this battle, and we know JonCon swears to kill more and become Tywin 2.0. as a direct result of the events at the sept. We see a similar change in Tarly.
Itā€™s also of note that Tarly and Tyrell at this point were on the Targaryen side. This crops up later when we look into other motivations and goals.
Aftermath
So we know that Robert suffers wounds and is somewhat detached from his host (be it they left him in the stoney sept or he scattered off from the main host). We know this as he ends up wounded in the Stoney Sept. After this, the battle of the bells and all the great victories that ended the war occur.
Notably, Tarly has no major military achievements after this battle. Since Mace Tyrell was invested in the siege of Storms end, it can be presumed Tarly was positioned with the main force. The next time we see him is in the battle of 5 kings ā€“

Discussion with Renly ā€“ The Siege of Stannis

  • Renly outright ignores Tarly when he says they'll be charging into the sun. In renlys conversation with stannis he points out how overwhelmingly strong his force is and how it will be heavy horse charging into boiled leather. He's not wrong, if the armies clash, stannis will be crushed and waiting is potentially disastrous, as stannis may not engage or slow the whole process down.

Battle of the Blackwater

A Clash of Kings - Sansa VII

They came up the roseroad and along the riverbank, through all the fields Stannis had burned, the ashes puffing up around their boots and turning all their armor grey, but oh! the banners must have been bright, the golden rose and golden lion and all the others, the Marbrand tree and the Rowan~, Tarly's huntsman~ and Redwyne's grapes and Lady Oakheart's leaf. All the westermen, all the power of Highgarden and Casterly Rock! ~Lord Tywin himself had their right wing~ on the north side of the river, with Randyll Tarly commanding the center and ~Mace Tyrell the left,~ but the vanguard won the fight. They plunged through Stannis like a lance through a pumpkin, every man of them howling like some demon in steel. And do you know who led the vanguard? Do you? Do you? Do you?"

A Storm of Swords - Catelyn II

"I told you to hold Riverrun," said Robb. "What part of that command did you fail to comprehend?"
"When you stopped Lord Tywin on the Red Fork," said the Blackfish, "you delayed him just long enough for riders out of Bitterbridge to reach him with word of what was happening to the east. ~Lord Tywin turned his host at once, joined up with Matthis Rowan and Randyll Tarly~ near the headwaters of the Blackwater, and made a forced march to Tumbler's Falls, ~where he found Mace Tyrell and two of his sons waiting with a huge host and a fleet of barges~. They floated down the river, disembarked half a day's ride from the city, and took Stannis in the rear."

We know tywin likes to put his strength on his flanks and in the reserve

Interestingly, Mace is there too, and itā€™s a tyrell van this time, not tarly
Lord Tywin himself had their right wing on the north side of the river, with Randyll Tarly commanding the center and Mace Tyrell the left, but the vanguard won the fight. They plunged through Stannis like a lance through a pumpkin, every man of them howling like some demon in steel.
ACOK 62: SANSA VII

Analysis

First the parallels. Mace Tyrell is paralleled to Tywin on the two flanks. It is a tyrell in the van who decides the day. Randyll commands the center.
Logistically, the battle is won by Mace Tyrell (whom I love as a character) with a fleet of barges and a huge host already in position (allowing the army to cross quickly enough to intercept the battle of the blackwater). Also the messenger that draws in Tywinā€™s host comes from Bitterbridge ā€“ Tyrell Lands. Given the van wins the battle, thereā€™s a fair argument that Mace could have won the battle alone, albeit with all the support he wins a crushing victory instead.
So Randyll is relegated to an important, but ultimately ancillary position. Whether the battle is won by Tywin or Mace (and by all logistical accounts, itā€™s Mace), is another question, but the ā€˜finest soldier in the seven kingdomsā€™ is once again, somewhat ineffectual. He still commands the center in such a battle, but he displays no logistical or battle prowess in this fight either, just being a renowned commander in the right place at the right time.

Battle of Duskendale

Ā· Lord Randyll defeats a northern army. The army is mostly foot and misplaced
Ā· This time, few excape ā€“ XXXX cuts off the retreat.
Ā· Some theories say he was tipped off by Roose Bolton.
Ā· This time he gets the commander
Ā· Figth occurs in FIELDS AND FARMS. Bad terrain for a retreat. Glover TRAPPED against blackwater bay
Ā· Note that Glover had to be captured lest bolton treachery be revealed. Cannot be allowed to send raven.
Ā· Strong implication of a trap and tipoff

A Storm of Swords - Catelyn IV

When they brought him word of the battle at Duskendale, where Lord Randyll Tarly had shattered Robett Glover and Ser Helman Tallhart, he might have been expected to rage.

A Storm of Swords - Tyrion VIII

But who would be mad enough to contest Joffrey's rule now, after what had befallen Stannis Baratheon and Robb Stark? There was still fighting in the riverlands, but everywhere the coils were tightening. Ser Gregor Clegane had crossed the Trident and seized the ruby ford, then captured Harrenhal almost effortlessly. Seagard had yielded to Black Walder Frey, ~Lord Randyll Tarly held Maidenpool, Duskendale, and the kingsroad.~

A Storm of Swords - Tyrion III

"No," their father said. "With the war. Varys."
The eunuch smiled a silken smile. "I have such delicious tidings for you all, my lords. Yesterday at dawn our ~brave Lord Randyll caught Robett Glover outside Duskendale and trapped him against the sea. Losses were heavy on both sides, but in the end our loyal men prevailed. Ser Helman Tallhart is reported dead, with a thousand others. Robett Glover leads the survivors back toward Harrenhal in bloody disarray, little dreaming he will find valiant Ser Gregor and his stalwarts athwart his path."~

A Storm of Swords - Tyrion I

"Until Lord Redwyne brings his fleet up, we lack the ships to assail Dragonstone. It makes no matter. Stannis Baratheon's sun set on the Blackwater. ~As for Stark, the boy is still in the west, but a large force of northmen under Helman Tallhart and Robett Glover are descending toward Duskendale. I've sent Lord Tarly to meet them, while Ser Gregor drives up the kingsroad to cut off their retreat.~ Tallhart and Glover will be caught between them, with a third of Stark's strength."

A Storm of Swords - Catelyn IV

When they brought him word of the battle at Duskendale, where ~Lord Randyll Tarly had shattered Robett Glover and Ser Helman Tallhart,~ he might have been expected to rage. Instead he'd stared in dumb disbelief and said, "Duskendale, on the narrow sea? Why would they go to Duskendale?" He'd shook his head, bewildered. "A third of my foot, lost for Duskendale?"
"The ironmen have my castle and now the Lannisters hold my brother," Galbart Glover said, in a voice thick with despair. Robett Glover had survived the battle, but had been captured near the kingsroad not long after.

A Feast for Crows - Brienne II

Lord Randyll Tarly had commanded Joffrey's army, made up of westermen and stormlanders and knights from the Reach. Those men of his who had died here had been carried back inside the walls, to rest in heroes' tombs beneath the septs of Duskendale. The northern dead, far more numerous, were buried in a common grave beside the sea. Above the cairn that marked their resting place, the victors had raised a rough-hewn wooden marker. HERE LIE THE WOLVES was all it said. Brienne stopped beside it and said a silent prayer for them, and for Catelyn Stark and her son Robb and all the men who'd died with them as well.

Analysis

Firstly we start with the obvious comparison. Tarly lets Robert escape when Mace otherwise very nearly won the war. Given another chance, Randyll pins his enemy against the sea and plans to not let a man escape. Having somewhat surrounded the opponent on known land, with reinforcements (Clegane) behind him, he still manages to suffer heavy casualties, and the target (XXXX) escapes.
What a colossal mistake. The only good news is he intercepted enough of the force that it seems no ravens got sent off showing exactly what happened, as if one message got back, the whole red wedding could have been undone.
Now prior posts have analyzed duskendale about allowing paths of retreat, and number of losses, but I think there are three key takeaways
1) The stark contrast between this and his tactics at Ashford
2) The fact that he failed to capture the host and Gregor Clegane had to clean up the mess
3) The fact he suffered heavy losses when by all rights he had every advantage (and still failed to capture the army)
Interestingly, the message that gets to Robb is that Tarly shattered glover. The actual message from Varys is only 1000 were killed, with Tallhart. Now its difficult to say how many foot there were, but itā€™s not unreasonable to assume that 1000 is less than to around half the force. Clegane captures Glover in the aftermath (thankfully), and Robb gets the report that Tarly shattered the force, when in actuality a good chunk of it was Clegane.
As a sidenote- this is indicative that Clegane actually isnā€™t a bad commander, and in turn this makes the fact that Edmure Tully threw him back more impressive.
We also donā€™t hear of any captives other than the ones taken by Clegane. It appears Tarly is putting men to the sword (SEE EARLIER).
Now before we get into conspiracy theories, we see Glover in ADWD conspiring with Madderly to help the starks and Stannis, so it seems this was not some cunning scheme where he secretly got himself captured.
Interestingly, the graves Brienne sees seem to indicate a crushing victory for Tarly, like the one described by Robb. This however is at odds with the report of Varys, and the fact Clegane had to mop up the leftover army. Now there are a few possibilities for this. Varys could be wrong/lying, heavy losses is being thrown around as a relative term (but that seems suspect), or the total of Tarly dead and Cleganeā€™s role is being hidden. The last seems the most likely, Robb hears of a crushing defeat led by Tarly not Clegane (which we know is at least partially false), the dead he kills donā€™t add up, and thereā€™s no mention of Clegane whom definitely did some of the work.
Also even assuming the whole situation is true and Tarly killed men at a 2/1 ratio, this assumes there are 500 heroes tombs under the septs at Duskendale. Simply put, there may not be that many. The whole aftermath stinks of a coverup. Tarly is getting Cleganes credit (and interestingly, itā€™s around now that Tywin decides not to give Clegane to oberyn).
Finally we get to the tinfoily bit. Helman garrisoned with Walder Frey to make sure he kept peace. Of the two lords, Helman is arguably more problematic, he knows more of Frey habits (when Tywin is scheming a betrayal) and his nephew is a possible hornwood claimant (cough Roose cough). If there was a conspiracy to kill one and ransom the other ā€“ I can see a world where Talhart is the one to be killed. In all reality though, this is a bit too ambitious, and in reality one just died and one escaped ā€“ without some super scheme that Tarly was involved in.
So in summary ā€“ once again Tarly fails his mission. At best, he bloodies an out of position army whilst taking heavy casualties, with his reinforcements on the way, and half the army breaks free (admittedly into Clegane). This is not a great display of prowess. We also know its possible to capture these men as hostages, as Clegane successfully does so ā€“ and Tarly fails to once again. Now itā€™s not catastrophic as the Northerners are bleeding men and trading troops tit for tat is beneficial, but the battle itself (the thing Randyll is in charge of) is highly unimpressive. The strategic victory goes to Tywin, whom in truth entrusts it as much to Gregor Clegane as to Tarly. As it so happens, Clegane delivers and Tarly doesnā€™t.

A summary as a commander

Talk about failing upwards
Ā· Charging ahead, he is able to turn a crushing win into an indecisive one which ultimately leads to Roberts Rebellion succeeding
Ā· He gives counsel to Renly about the sun when renly knows that the sheer strength of his cavalry makes the issue moot. Renly all but ignores him.
Ā· He doesnā€™t appear to do much during the battle of the blackwater
Ā· He manages to mess up essentially an ambush at Duskendale despite reinforcements being on the way
Ā· As a result of the 4 above points, he is given, lands, titles, honors and a position on the small council.
Upon actually reviewing his achievements and each individual battle, Iā€™ve 180ā€™d on Tarly. George RR Martin does a great job building him up, and having everyone describe him as a great commander, but actually unpacking his battles, he looks pretty underwhelming. The most important battle he won was Ashford, but that was a strategic catastrophe which otherwise could have potentially let Mace Tyrell win the war. Afterwards heā€™s carefully managed, with Renly outright dismissing him, Mace keeping the key positions of command in other peopleā€™s hands and Tywin going so far as to dispatch a trusted force behind him in the event he fails again ā€“ WHICH HE DOES.

Politicks, Loyalties and Conspiracies

Thereā€™s a lot to get through so Iā€™m not going to source everything here. Rather, Iā€™ll list dot points, and we will be collecting everything under theories. In time it may be worth sourcing this all, but for now, I want to get something out ā€“ so itā€™ll be shortform
Ā· Historically house is blackfyre
Ā· Renly Sworn NOT STANNIS
Ā· Joined at bitterbridge to Renly
Ā· Shadowbaby and killing others
Ā· VIEWS ON MAESTERS
Ā· Killing Stannis supporters at bitterbridge
Ā· Saving Brienne
Ā· Helping Brienne / Bewilderment
Ā· Views on Women and Strongmen
Ā· Sam, Maesters, the Marches and Strength
Ā· Maidenpool Rulership
Ā· Renown amonst common men
Ā· Downplaying the Golden Company
Ā· Bravosi Debts
Ā· Taking the QUEEN ahead of Mace Tyrell

Theoreis Stemming off Data

The Blackfyre Theory

Letā€™s assume that Randyll supported the Blackfyres because his house traditionally were Blackfyre Loyalists. This is a little thin on evidence, but quite a few of his actions also support this, lending some credence to the theory
1) He swore to Renly not Stannis.
a. Stannis was 17 or 18 when he held storms end. He is approximately 13 years older than Renly, making Renly 5 at the time. This means that during Roberts Rebellion, for all relevant purposes, Renly was a non-participant, whilst Stannis actively fought against the dragons. If Randyll is a dragon supporter, his repulsion at joining Stannis is apparent.
b. In fact, he goes as far as to kill stannis supporters at bitterbridge to consolidate the reach forces. This is interesting as it contrasts stannis whom takes pains to not kill the karstarks to a man once he realizes their treason.
2) He downplays the golden company
a. At the end of AFWC, Randyll is downplaying the golden company as much as he can. If we assume he is pro-dragon, this gives time for the blackfyre cause to swell, as he delays Kevan Lannister to the best of his ability
3) He hates the Maesters
a. Between the Grand Maester Conspiracy [LINK], lady Dustinā€™s general hatred of Maesters and Marwynā€™s comments about Maesters and Dragons, it seems credible that dragon supporters may have cause to mistrust Maesters. Indeed, we get hints of this from Doran, and a general mistrust of Maesters by some of the lesser lords.
i. "I would need a bucket, with this pain. Thank you, but no. I want my wits about me. I'll have no more need of you tonight."
b. This explains also why he is so determined Sam will not become a Maester and why he drives him to the nights watch. If he is a loyalist, heā€™s never going to let a member of his family into an enemy order. If Sam is given any sort of free reign in a role other than lord, heā€™s going to end up a Maester (indeed even at the nights watch he ends up there, despite his protests and fears of his fathers wroth).
4) Do we actually see any trouble in the marches. I donā€™t think we do and itā€™s only STANNIS who fears dorne through the marches, not Tarly or Tyrell. In fact, this area is left undefended when they march on the blackwater.
a. I have a sub-theory that despite complaining a lot, we donā€™t see any real antagonism between Dorne and the reach throughout the series, just some loud complaining that makes us think of antagonism. Oberyn hints at this to Tyrion.
5) Killing Florents
a. Florents have ties to Stannis
b. Florents are Tyrell rivals
c. Florents instantly defect to stannis. Note they were set aside by dragons over highgarden
d. Their protests were denied by King Aegon I, perhaps because the Florents had fought House Targaryen when the Tyrells did not.
e. https://www.reddit.com/asoiaf/comments/3tr6gx/spoilers_all_house_of_the_week_house_florent/
i. Theories florents Green
6) This is of course also consistent with him racing Ahead of Mace Tyrellā€™s army and having the Tyrell queen taken into his personal custody. Unfortunately, this bodes badly for our lovely doe-eyed Margery. Oh well.
7) ~If it were up to me, I would send them all to the Night's Watch, and Connington with them. The Wall is where such scum belong."~ Heā€™s setting it up so the only legitimate claimant of JonConā€™s lands is in fact, JonCon. Obviously a new lord can be appointed, but this suggested move adds legitimacy to the blackfyre cause, removing the heir apparent and putting JonCon back in his ancestral lands without a real challenger.

1) The ā€˜show of strength / toxic masculinity theoryā€™
a. This theory has to do with Tarly appearing competent millirarily rather than being competent. He doles harsh justice and havy discipline, which in some ways hides his lackluster results as a commander. I should note this is the weakest of the three theories, but it sort of feeds into the other two.
b. This would be indicative of his hatred for Sam. The moment the ā€˜veilā€™ of masculinity and strength is lifted, his actual achievements are lackluster
c. After ashford he appears much more brutal than before. We have no indication he was brutal pre Ashford, and post ashford heā€™s executing enemies, cornering and murdering northmen to a man (as best he can at least) and doling out harsher justice than his peers
d. Every character who speaks of Tarly speaks of his millirary accolades. I think his ā€˜larger than lifeā€™ persona has played at least a part in this, and Tarly looks the part as the veteran commander.
e. I ought to note this theory doesnā€™t stop Tarly from playing the game of thrones, it just suggests he isnā€™t an exceptional tactical commander. Logistically, he has always been with the winning side as a vassal, heā€™s been able to spin every battle to gain honors and accolades, and he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time (declaring for renly early, being in the van at ashford etc.)
f. All that aside, this theory also doesnā€™t stop Tarly from being a jerk. Given how he acts to Sam and both towards and around Brienne, we are naturally inclined to mislike him as a harsh leader.
2) Not as dumb as he looks theory
a. Heā€™s taken the queen into his personal Custody. We literally heard from Renly back in book 1 ā€“ he who holds the XXXX holds the crown. With all the chaos in the recent books, itā€™s easy to miss, but this is a huge move in the game of thrones. The Tyrells do not have the queen. Tarly does.
b. As far as I can tell, heā€™s never been at real risk in a battle since Ashford. He had backup and numbers at duskendale, a massive host at the blackwater, The Siege of Storms End was just a great big preservation of army by Mace whilst Roberts rebellion raged, and the Siege on Stannis was totally lopsided but for magic shadow-baby.
c. Dorne does not seem to have acted against him once nor demanded concessions. [CHECK]. For a lord in the Dornish Marches which have been tumultuous for years, this is somewhat of a big deal. He also seems to be unafraid of moving his forced forward ā€“ we have no indication he left levies to protect himself from Dorne, hinting that he wasnā€™t afraid of Dorne misbehaving (even if only to harry border towns, a bit like Bolton grabbing up the hornwood lands).
d. He sucks up to the bravosi Banker when all the debts are being called in. We have this picture of this strong, just, military man, but the banker scene shows heā€™s not just a sword arm, and he knows when to suck up. This is important as it shows he is at least considering the wider world and the future outside of the battles, as opposed to a certain dwarf whom never actually meets the bankers.
e. He has turned a bunch of mediocre achievements into being renowned as the greatest soldier in the realm. By all rights, Stannis and Robb are much better commanders (with the caveat that Robb was only good tactically). If we want to get nasty, Mace Tyrell has only won crushing victories ā€“ with the exception of ashford (messed up by Tarly) and storms end (where he lost no troops in a rebellion that depleted most of the realm).
i. The most competent appearing thing he said was to not charge into the sun, which was largely irrelevant when plated heavy cavalry is charging into boiled leather. As Renly said to Stannis, his force wouldnā€™t survive first impact, so this whole sun business is a bit silly.
ii. Arguably the most competent thing was executing all the soldiers considering going over to Stannis, but Iā€™m not sure if this is truly competent or just brutality ā€“ Stannis did not do the same with the Karstarks in a similar position.
f. Heā€™s bypassed succession laws. By getting rid of Sam he has set himself up with his chosen heir. Look at the thorny knot Tywin tied himself with Tyrion, whom still arguably is the rightful heir to Castelry Rock (which he made full use of with the Second Suns). We know Maesters can be kicked out of the order (see our favourite necromancer), and can be used to play with succession (Aemon is a good example, albeit he said no) and I donā€™t really see Sam as a priest.
i. Thereā€™s actually a good question as to whether he would have killed Sam. The gods hate kinslayers, and the threat sufficed. If we assume tarly isnā€™t an idiot, he would have realized the threat likely sufficient.
g. Given how he sets himself up at Maidenpool, its hinted that the Maidenpool land is part of his reward for the blackwater. We never hear of exactly ā€˜whatā€™ Tarlyā€™s reward is, except in the aftermath heā€™s patrolling Duskendale (still seemingly with house Rykker),, Maidenpool and the kings road, and seems to be setting himself up in Maidenpool for the long haul. In AFFC, Tarlyā€™s heir is married off to Eleanor Mooton (the seeming heiress to maidenpool) and Tommen pardons Moonton. Maidenpool is a major port in the world of Ice and Fire, which would make it a fine reward[[1]](#_ftn1).

BRIENNE THING

A Feast for Crows - Brienne III

Randyll Tarly solved the mystery the day he sent two of his men-at-arms to summon her to his pavilion. His young son Dickon had overheard four knights laughing as they saddled up their horses, and had told his lord father what they said.

ā€¦ "The gods made men to fight, and women to bear children," said Randyll Tarly. "A woman's war is in the birthing bed."
Someone was coming down the cellar steps. Brienne pushed her wine aside as a ragged, scrawny, sharp-faced man with dirty brown hair stepped into the Goose. He gave the Tyroshi sailors a quick look and Brienne a longer one, then went up to the plank. "Wine," he said, "and none o' your horse piss in it, thank'e."

JUSTICE THING

Battle of the Blackwater ā€“ a step Sideways

In short
Randyll Tarly is a shrewd Blackfyre loyalist who now has custody of the queen, a position on the small council and whom is not considered a political threat. Heā€™s not half the commander heā€™s made out to be, probably has anti-maester sentiment and is possibly friendly with Doran Martell. And he has an army.
This has been quite a ride and Iā€™m sure I got many details wrong so letā€™s end on a high note. Given all this, I expect Randyll to sacrifice Margery and prove ser pounceā€™s lineage to the age of conquest. Tommen will blindly stamp a document marrying himself to the cat, the white walkers will be appeased (their problem is only humans), and everyone lives happily ever after except for Danerys who dies.

2024.05.19 13:18 pillowcase-of-eels [Music] Emilie Autumn's Asylum, pt. 6 ā€“ High-concept musician responds to online criticism by waging successful attrition war against her own fanbase

šŸŖž
Welcome back to the Asylum write-up, where we explore the decade-long slow-motion car crash that is the Emilie Autumn fandom.
Sorry this installment took so long to upload! Just a heads-up, I may take some time to deliver the last one too ā€“ these posts take forever to format on Reddit's finicky-ass editor, and my dumb real life is currently keeping me from precious Internet time. Thank you for your patience! You have my word that everyone who pre-ordered the final installment will receive a PERSONAL, HANDWRITTEN letter autographed and illustrated by me, a list of the snacks I consumed while composing this write-up, some exclusive behind-the-scenes secrets, and a pony.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4.1 ā€“ Part 4.2 Part 5
Places, everyone This is a test Throw your stones Do your damage Your worst, and your best (...) And if I had a dollar For every time I repented the sin And commit the same crime I'd be sitting on top of the world today (ā€œGod Help Meā€, 2006šŸŽµ)
Quick recap of where we left off. First, there were five to ten halcyon years of pleasant and meaningful interactions between EA and her blossoming fanbase, prominently by way of her official forum. Then, circa 2009-2010, EA's online presence shifted towards sudden anger outbursts, ban-hammering, and an increasingly top-down communication style.
This created a sort of primordial rift within the fanbase, between those who supported EA's right to speak her mind and regulate her own fan spaces however she pleased ā€“ and those who thought that her reactions were rude and inappropriate (at best), and that even fan spaces should allow for reasonable, non-abusive criticism of the artist.
Between a poorly-handled book release (see Part 3), the controversial (Part 2) or dubiously true (Part 4) contents of said book, and serious shade from various former collaborators (Part 5), more and more fans had pressing thoughts about EA's work ethic and choices. EA attempted damage control through drastic forum rules that made it virtually impossible to voice any ā€œseriousā€ critical opinion. It didn't work, of course: instead of squashing the mutiny, she created a schism.
Critical fans and active haters started congregating on unofficial platforms.

ā€œWITH MUFFINS LIKE THIS, WHO NEEDS ENEMIES?ā€: TROLL LIKE A GIRL

So here we were, the early 2010s. The official forum (which had about 700 members in 2006, if you recall) was now thousands-strong, reaching just over 12,000 registered users in 2012 ā€“ not all of them active, but still. In terms of sheer numbers and content creation, the party was POPPIN'... but increasingly in parts of the Asylum that escaped EA's jurisdiction, such as Tumblr, where they could speak their mind freely.
You play the victim very well You've built your self-indulgent hell You wanted someone to understand you Well, be careful what you wish for, because I do (ā€œI Know Where You Sleepā€, 2006šŸŽµ)
In one wing of Asylum Tumblr, a smattering of call-out blogs emerged, which laid out EA's various lies, faux pas, shitty takes, and general deep-seated terribleness in detailed timelines and screenshots (or, short of that, long-winded bullet points). While many such blogs framed it as ā€œseriousā€ whistleblowing and did their best to remain as fact-based and neutral as they could, there was some genuine disgust, animosity and creepiness towards EA on that side of Tumblr; for some ex-fans, ā€œexposing the truthā€ was mostly justify obsessive hatred, prying and verbal abuse. Some, for instance, felt the bizarre need to side with EA's mother in their estrangement. (One user, with the URL ā€œemilyautumnfischkopfā€, argued in a serious and down-to-earth tone - but with zero sources - that EA's upbringing had been nothing but peaceful and supportive until she ungratefully kicked her loving family to the curb for no reason at all. They were later revealed šŸ” to have an alternate handle as ā€œeaisalyingcuntā€.)
Either way, through these blogs, a number of potential drama bombs that had mostly flown under the radar were dredged up from over the years ā€“ some of which were hard to ignore, even for supportive fans. Where to begin?
There was that nonsense in-joke song, captured twice on camera during the 2009 tour (to very little outrage, at the time), crassly called ā€œManatee Retardā€šŸ“ŗ. Or EA's scathing response, in print, to a wheelchair user who found it insensitive that she used a bedazzled wheelchair as a prop to do sexy acrobatics on stage. (ā€œYour offence taken at my hard-won self-acceptance proves that I indeed have something to fight againstā€, she wrote). Spoken word tracks where she made trivializing knock-knock jokes about serious mental illnesses she didn't have, like schizophrenia and OCD. Multiple instances of calling Britney Spears a ā€œbimboā€ and a ā€œHollywood fucked-upā€, resentfully claiming that she only shaved her head because she was ā€œhopped up on drugsā€ and certainly not because she was ā€œbipolarā€, a word the press liked to wield as an insult anyway. (ā€œThat's almost like calling someone a retard!ā€ Yeah, heaven forbid.) The meanest, most distasteful paragraphs in the book. Basically everything problematic EA had ever said or written.šŸ“ In retrospect, it had been a long time coming, but it was a lot to take in ā€“ and certainly more off-putting, even to less emotionally invested fans, than silly lies about her age and last name.
In another wing of Asylum Tumblr, some fans had had it up to here and just wanted to have fun. šŸŽµ If Plague Rats had learned one valuable lesson from EA, it was how to crack a joke in the face of absurd tragedy ā€“ and the general state of the EA fandom certainly warranted a few.
In 2012, Fight Like a Girl was released. After six long years, three of which had been peaceful, the Opheliac era was officially over. The new album and ensuing tour confirmed that the Asylum had entered a process of glamorous Broadway-style militarization. šŸŽµšŸ“ŗ
The mood board was ā€œRoman general meets Vegas showgirl meets Victorian street urchinā€.šŸŖž The color palette was, to naysayers, ā€œmusty pink and rotten, stale piss yellowā€. šŸ€ The keyword was ā€œREVENGEā€ (through the power of... self-expression! sorority! brutal assault with rusty medical implements!). The chorus of the title song had an intriguing run-on line about getting ā€œrevenge on the world, or at least 49% of the people in itā€ šŸŽµ ā€“ which seemed like an awful lot, and was widely interpreted (to cheers, boos, or uncomfortable sighs) as a misandrist jab at literally all men on Earth.
The show was essentially a demo version of the musical, in that the setlist vaguely reflected the order of events in the story ā€“ but prior reading was essential in order to get what the hell was going on on stage. This one Broadway reviewer had not perused the literature before seeing the show šŸ”, and hated: the set, the choreography, the skits, the plot, the lyrics, the music, the concept. (Seriously, you should read the review. It's not even my show and I feel like quitting show business.)
Pre-show VIP encounters, now violin-free, were lorded over by EA's new manageršŸ€, whose official title was ā€œAsylum Headmistressā€. (Interesting choice ā€“ she sounds fun!) The swag bags were less substantial than before, and the ā€œgreetā€ part of the meet-and-greet was rarely more than a quick hug and photo op.
On Twitter, EA continued to embrace her ā€œI am very badassā€ fronting attitude...
Often wonder if cyberbullies r aware theyā€™re fucking w/ a girl whoā€™s BFs w/ maker of the SAW films & is marrying a knife-throwing scorpion. (šŸ€šŸ“)
...and her taste for needlessly inflammatory statements. About an aisle sign in a supermarket:
If this does not infuriate you, then you're a fucking potato.
(Again with the confounding crypto-ableism, EA! šŸ”) She also went through a phase of raging against Lady Gaga šŸ“, who had stolen her idea of using a wheelchair on stage as an able-bodied woman. šŸ” That failed to convince anyone that she wasn't the histrionic diva that haters made her out to be.
Spurred on by EA's rallying cries and ā€œus vs themā€ mentality, loyalists turned the white-knighting up to 11. On Twitter, some Plague Rats got into cat fights with Lady Gaga's Little Monsters (what a time to be alive). Others tried to balance out the Tumblr negativity with initiatives like ā€œSpreading a Plague of Loveā€ ā€“ a ā€œpositive-onlyā€ confession blog, whose extreme fangirling, comically drastic rules and hyper-defensive tonešŸ“ did not debunk the increasingly popular notion that ā€œtrue Plague Ratsā€ were a bunch of authoritarian and hopelessly brainwashed fanatics.
EA truthers and other anti-fans started lashing out at anyone who dared express any positive opinion of EA, solidifying claims that the backlash against EA was just a conspiracy of bitter, hysterical bullies.
All this to say: every passing day brought new reasons for fans to get mad at EA and each other, and everyone in the Asylum was in need of a laugh. It's not easy having a good time.šŸ¦
Leading up to Fight Like a Girl and in the years that followed, user-submission-based meme blogs took off, most notably ā€œSpreading a Plague of Lulz / Troll Like a Girlā€. A lot of the early submissions were absurdist humor and toothless, cheezburger-Impact memes (a style that was, oddly, already dated at the time). Those often originated in good fun, and from loyal fans, on the official forum. But there was also true snark, satirizing EA's questionable ethics, outrageous claims, and easily spoofed artistic gimmicks. A new slang of Asylumspeak emerged: Glittertits (slight NSFW), GAGA!!, EA Gusta and all its memeface variants, Get outta mah house!, Are You Suffering?, Fight Like A Goat, [Random celebrity] copied EA (a subgenre in its own right), ...
Most of the ā€œtrollingā€ was directed at unrepentant bootlickers and, to a lesser extent, red-in-the-face haters and creeps. Meme blogs would post joke comments under ā€œseriousā€ or gushing submissions on Wayward Victorian Confessions, and taunt loyalist accounts by tagging them in their posts. When a few people complained on WVC that almost all of the Bloody Crumpets to date had been thin white able-bodied women, and a few fans responded by sharing their dream-casts for a more diverse line-up, the blog was flooded for days with confessions that ā€œX should be a Crumpetā€ (candidates included RuPaul, Mitt Romney, Nicki Minaj, EA's therapist, and the WVC admins). Farcical shenanigans like that.
Ah, but some people will always cross the line, won't they. EA threads popped up on merciless, bully-friendly snark platforms like Lolcow, Pretty Ugly Little Liar, and Encyclopedia Dramatica. Snarkers with a mean streak and obsessive haters mingled in some of the more aggressive, 4-chan-spirited retaliation against EA ā€“ which would be called ā€œbrigadingā€ in modern parlance. This included flooding EA's Goodreads page with one-star reviews (see part 4), repeatedly editing her Wikipedia page to include her legal name and birth year, and ensuring that Googling said name would bring up current pictures of her.
All of this compounded agitation fragmented the once-united fandom beyond recognition.šŸ¦  Through substantial disagreements among fans, personal bickerings, layers upon layers of inscrutable in-jokes, and cross-platform telephone games, the Asylum morphed into a booby-trapped Escher room.
Satire blogs were taken in earnest. Earnest fan blogs scanned as satire. Memes would get called out as abuse. Appreciation without attached criticism would get mocked as bootlicking. Obvious jokes made by EA would be taken at face value. One divisive confession could trigger days and days of debate, to the point that WVC eventually banned confessions in response to other confessions. New waves of infighting created a confusing web of rival sub-factionsšŸ€, each accusing the others of being toxic, cliquish, and delusional.
The shared fantasy was broken, the collective vision had crumbled, no onez was speaking the same language anymore. Fans would jump down the throat of other fans who held almost identical views about EA, except for that one thing she said or did that one time. Everyone had differing thoughts on what should or shouldn't acceptable to discuss, question, excuse, make fun of.
War is hell.

SCORCHED EARTH SHENANIGANS: HONEY, I SHRUNK THE ASYLUM

Would you tear my castle down Stone by stone And let the wind run through my windows Till there was nothing left But a battered rose? (ā€œCastle Downā€, 2003šŸŽµ)
Haters vs sycophants is not really the kind of conflict where one side can come out on top (if you're participating, you've already lost). But in the long tug-of-war between ā€œgrassrootsā€ and ā€œEA-sponsoredā€ fan spaces, the ultimate winner is obvious ā€“ in that the former is gasping in agony, a shriveled husk of its former glory, while the latter... is non-existent. This is due in no small part to EA's tendency, like the Czars of old, to settle conflicts by setting Moscow on fire.šŸ”)
That's not entirely fair: unlike EA, the czar only did it that once.
By early 2013, as EA was gearing up for her third Fight Like a Girl tour at the end of the year, the official forum was... not as lively as it once had been. Not just because of the stifling rules and disgruntlement towards EA, or because EA herself hadn't really posted anything on there in years; the Internet was also changing, and forums in general were fast becoming passƩ.
This made it difficult for EA to create a safe space where she could talk to fans, and fans could talk to and about her, in a way she deemed suitable (ie, a space she could gate-keep and regulate enough to keep it completely free from negative criticism). Social media was a minefield; she still posted regularly, but didn't interact very much. So EA and the Headmistress came up with a way to filter out the unbelievers: an official fan clubšŸ“, aptly called the ā€œAsylum Armyā€, with a $100 entry price.
Joining the AA came with a dog tag, a sew-on patch, and a lifetime membership certificate signed by EA and ā€“ for some reason ā€“ the Headmistress. (Unlike EA's best friend and sound engineer back in the forum's heyday, I don't think fans ever really embraced the FLAG-era manager as part of the Asylum in-group. She came across more as a coordinator / businessperson / adult chaperone, at best.šŸ€) So, slightly better goodies than you'd get by joining the other AA šŸ” ... but not by much. The main appeal was that members would have access to exclusive content, special merch, giveaways, early bird tickets for future shows, and regular video chats with EA.
The concept itself drew a fair amount of criticism, as you can imagine. Between the namešŸ€, the price, and the inherent gatekeeping of a pay-to-join fanclub, many balked at the monetizing of a concept that had once (like, three years back) been significantly more DIY, grassroots, and inclusive. šŸ“šŸ€
Then again, many also longed for a positive, drama-free space where fans could just be fans. And while the creation of the AA was generally recognized as a quick cashgrab, a lot of people were surprisingly cool with it. EA was trying to finance her dream musical, after all ā€“ although a number of fans wished she had gone about raising funds in a less sketchy way.
So around 400 fans shelled out (which, according to the HeadmistressšŸ“, ā€œbasically cover[ed] the cost of running the fanclub itself ā€“ keeping the database up, website, etc.ā€). Enough for a close-knit, but sizable community. But already, there was a conflict of interest: a high fanclub entry fee essentially demands that you pledge loyalty to the artist over loyalty to your fellow fans, who wish to join but can't afford to. Sharing, caring, and ensuring no one felt left out were some of the more positive values cultivated in the fandom... but leaking exclusive content would surely piss off other paying membersšŸ€, and make EA feel betrayed all over again. (And she had barely just started to mellow out on social media!)
...But then again, this is the internet. After the first month of secret AA drops (lyric sheets, some photoshoot outtakes ā€“ nothing too juicy, really), there were, yes, some leaks. EA was predictably miffed, and retaliated by... ghosting the fanclub for weeks at a time in its first few months of existence (great look!). She eventually found the ā€œsolutionā€ to her problem, by providing something you couldn't right-click-save (and which had been part of the promised perks to begin with): live interaction.
Over webcam, she was her usual in-person bubbly, charming, funny self. Everyone seemingly had a good time during the fanclub video chat, and this gave people faith and hope.
There were a few more events, giveaways, etc. As promised, ahead of the fall 2013 tour (the last one to date, it would turn out), AA members got priority access to show tickets and VIP bundles. The latter were much pricier than before, and only included soundcheck, a photo-op, and three goodies: a tin of loose-leaf tea, a signed printer-paper setlist, and a small flag that said ā€œF.L.A.G.ā€.šŸ” Some stuff continued to leak ā€“ but, as some of the outlaws pointed out (scroll down to the Disqus comments), they were mostly relaying information that was relevant to the entire fanbase, such as updates about ongoing projects (the dragged-out recording of the audiobook, for one).
In early 2014, lifetime memberships were closed, and replaced with monthly, quarterly and yearly subscription tiers. Bizarrely, you ended up paying $3 more per month if you bought a $99 yearly subscriptionšŸ“ ā€“ but it did include the patch, dog tag, and piece of paper!
Sometimes I kind of want to be part of the cool kids and register to the Asylum Army. Then I remember how it came about, what you could get for the same price a couple years ago, how the whole thing was and is handled, and that I wonā€™t support any of this bullshit. (And then I roll around naked in all the money Iā€™m saving.) (šŸ€)
Still, a number of fans rejoiced at the affordable monthly option, and joined ā€“ if not for the exclusive content and merch (which were... okay, but not much to write home about), then for the friendly, drama-free exchanges with an artist they actually did love, in spite of all the frustration.
For the still-too-poor or still-undecided, there was always the forum! It wasn't as active as it used to be, but a few die-hards still managed to keep the lights on... until, inevitably, Someone Did Something and Ruined Everything. (Once again: EA's wrath is spectacular, but rarely completely unprovoked.) The incident features one notable figure in the Asylum community. Let's call him the Collector.
OK, so maybe you remember the meme I linked to in Part 4, with Christian Grey and the ginormous EA hoard. Well, that's the Collector's collection. The ā€œViolinā€ promo that I called the "Holy Grail of the fandom" in the same paragraph? Also his. The handwritten lyrics that went for $940? Guess who won that auction. Over the years, the Collector had probably spent five figures on EA merch and shows, and although that fact was a little unsettling, he was a very active, easy-going, and generally well-liked fixture of the fandom.
One day in 2012, shortly after the Headmistress had replaced EA's old Chicago BFF as main forum admin, the Collector's account got banned or restricted over something dumb. When the ban wasn't lifted as quickly as he hoped, he took it... the way one takes things when one is unhealthily invested: he started spamming Headmistress and the mod team with increasingly rambling and abusive emails (lost to time, probably for the best). When that didn't work quickly enough, he tried a different route.
One of the many auctions that the Collector had won, some years prior, was EA's old iPod TouchšŸ“ ā€“ which contained all of her favorite tunes and, buried somewhere in the data cache... a phone number. Which the Collector tried calling. And wouldn't you know it: EA picked up. She congratulated him on his sleuthing skills, listened patiently as he made his case, apologized for any distress caused by the unfair account restriction, and then they got married.
Kidding! She freaked the fuck out, hung up, and banned him for life from the forum and all EA shows and events.
After his ban, the Collector allegedly still tried to attend at least one VIP pre-show (one source in the comments says he was allowed to buy some merch, refunded for his ticket, and escorted out). He joined the Reform forum to bitch about EA and try to rally people to his cause, possibly made revenge posts about her on darker snark forums, and continued to hound the Asylum mod team. So in June 2014, EA came up with a radical and unexpected fix to the Collector problem.
The official Asylum Fan Forum has been shut down permanently. I have personally paid thousands of dollars each year to keep the forum safe and secure for you ... Unfortunately, the forum has not been kept safe and secure for me, a truth which disappoints me greatly, instead becoming a place where people who have physically threatened myself and my staff prey upon forum members, pressuring them to contact me and my staff on their behalf. If the gullible wish to humor my stalkers (who live in their parentā€™s basement at age 30 something) and thus put me in danger, they may do it on their own dime. They may also fuck off, because stupidity can kill, and I wonā€™t be your victim. To those who enjoyed the forum, you know who to thank for its closure. (ā€œOn the closing of the Asylum Forumā€)
VoilƠ! This is how a decade-long archive of shared history ends: not with a bang, but with a dirty delete and a sod-off communiquƩ.
The obliteration of the forum took everyone by surprise...
I was actually on the forum when it was taken down. I was navigating between posts and when I went to click on a different board, an error message came up. I honestly cried a little, I'm not ashamed to say. (WVC admin on Reddit, 2024)
...and I do mean everyone:
Chicago BFF / ex-admin, the next morning: Whoa, EA forum shut down? Ex-mod: It turns out that if someone spends enough years actively ā€œwaging warā€ to destroy what they canā€™t have, eventually theyā€™ll be successful. * eye roll * Not even mods got prior warning. Just all the sudden, poof, gone. BFF: Really? She did not let the moderators know?! This is sounding worse and worse. Uggh. Iā€™m so sorry. Such a loss. (...) Ok, threats are serious, but why not just put it in archive mode so no one can post? (...) Sad. I shall light a candle in the forum's honor. (Facebook posts; scroll down for screenshots)
It was a gut punch, especially for people who had poured countless hours into the community, or could have used some prior warning to save years of their own writing from the role-playing threads. One last chance to take a look around the place that had meant so much to so many.
From the wording of the announcement of closing the forum and a number of other things, it sometimes seems like EA doesn't like her fans much. :/ (šŸ€)
Three months after the forum was nuked, Battered Rose (a venerable EA fansite, which had been around since the Enchant era and had one of the most complete EA galleries online) announced that it was shutting down too.šŸ“ The admin, who had also been a long-time forum mod, cited a lack of ā€œtime, energy, passion, or moneyā€ to keep the website going... and being upset at the sudden disappearance of the forum. It was, truly, the end of an era for the Asylum.
...Well, no point in living in the past. For those who could afford it, and still wanted to talk to/about EA after that (not everyone did šŸ€), there was always the Asylum Army fanclub!
Over the summer of 2014, EA held regular live chats and Q&A's, and... many attendees really enjoyed them, and thought the AA was well worth the money after all. She also quietly parted ways with the much poo-pooed Headmistress around that time.
Just spent over 4 hours giggling, drinking tea and playing guessing games in chat with EA and other Asylum Army members ... No griping, no downers, just lots of fun. I think I like the way the ā€˜new fandomā€™ is going and now Iā€™m really glad I finally decided to join the Army. (September 4, 2014šŸ€; Battered Rose had closed the day before)
The forum was lost forever, but perhaps that was a chance for a fresh start. Could this fanclub thing really be the Asylum Renaissance that fans had been longing for?
...I have come today to a very difficult but necessary decision, and that is to discontinue the Emilie Autumn Official Fanclub. The site itself, and the community chatroom, will remain open to you indefinitely, but I will no longer be making updates to the site. (Newsletter, September 8, 2014šŸ“)
...Never mind, then.
Turns out the fanclub had been the Headmistress' idea all along. EA had been reluctant from the start, and although she really enjoyed the live chats with a safe community of people ā€œwho are there for the right reasonsā€, she couldn't overcome her fundamental discomfort with the concept. Lifetime and regular members would receive a bunch of digital downloads and a -35% coupon on the Asylum Emporium for their troubles. EA said she would definitely pop back once in a while for live chats, for free, just for fun, but to my knowledge, she never did.
And so the most devoted fans were left standing in the rain...
She is happy, she made it. She is fulfilling her dreams, found love and happiness after all the pain. I understand that she now doesnā€™t need ā€œusā€ anymore ... That doesnā€™t change the fact she broke my heart with taking the Asylum Army and the forum from me. Yet, I am happy for her. (šŸ€)
...while naysayers pointed and laughed, Nelson-style.šŸ¦
I donā€™t feel sorry at all for the people that paid for the Asylum Army fan club. Most of them knew that EA is an atrocious business woman and has broken many promises before. In fact, I laugh at them. They seriously thought that EA would actually stay consistent with this? (šŸ€)

EVERYTHING MUST GO: THE ASYLUM WHOLESALE

EA fans were left without an ā€œofficialā€ home for about three years. This gave them plenty of time to be annoyed at EA for: not releasing the audiobook on time, not materializing any new project for a while... and the new sin of peddling random, ridiculously marked-up AliBaba jewelry as ā€œmerchā€ on her official store. Think faux-antique cameo pendants and $30 Big Ben rings (...because the Asylum story is set in London, get it?).
The whole accessories section looks like a tacky overpriced English souvenir shop. (šŸ€)
The fanbase lost a lost of steam in those in-between years, because there wasn't much to stick around for. As evidenced by the positive reception of the AA live chats, even in the midst of unresolved drama, out-loud interactions in a friendly environment have always been EA's saving grace. Considering the amount of online hate, there are shockingly few accounts of bad IRL encounters with EA: most people say that in live conversation, she comes across as a fun, warm, and genuinely sweet person. Some report that their negative opinion shifted after meeting her.
But there were no chats or live shows anymore. There was only social media, where she ignored questions and vague-posted about overdue projects ā€“ and the newsletteršŸ“, which was all saccharine love-bombing to promote bland dropshipped trinkets. For fans who remembered the handcrafted merch (and two-way communication) of the early years, it was a bitter pill to swallow.

2024.05.19 13:04 OVLD68 Need General Criminal law case law

Hi, I have a few questions regarding some things I covered in advanced criminal law this year before my exam which i'm struggling to find.
Negating mens rea:
Firstly, to negate mens rea for a mental disorder, does the defendant need to be completely unconscious to their actions or can semi-consciousness satisfy this element? For instance I found cases like R v Clarke, which said the defendant must have a complete failure of their ability to reason and R v Lamb which states only a complete state of "insane automatism" negates mens rea. However, I was unsure if whether they had a certain degree of cognitive awareness (could speak), if this means they were cognitively aware?
Additionally, regarding the M'Naghten Rules, does personal problems that contribute to a mental state (like losing a job or a family member dying) mean the mental disorder can't be due to an "unforeseen, uncontrollable disease" causing total incapacitation? If so do you know of any cases that support this?
.
Professing to belong to a terrorist organisation:
What does "belonging" or "professing to belong" to a terrorist organisation actually mean? Like how is it objectively determined? Are there any cases which outlined what these words mean or what constitutes someone belonging to a terrorist organisation?
Also, what is the test for "arousing reasonable suspicion"? I assumed it was whether a reasonable person became suspicious of activity, but if so, is there a case in criminal law which outlines what is considered a reasonable person?
.
Harassment and stalking offences:
Are there any criminal cases which declare what "distress" actually means? Like outlines how a victim needs to behave in order to be considered "distressed"?
Also, is there a case which says what is considered a reasonable response to warrant harassing someone? Like how far can it go. I looked at the case of R v Debnath [2005] but didn't find much useful from it.
.
Any help and cases for these questions would be much appreciated.

2024.05.19 13:04 Few-Ad-7161 Stress level a week prior

Im a L2 candidate, i think its quite common to be nervous during the week leading up to the exam.
I often have anxiety and it disrupts my sleep, i have been waking up regularly during the night reciting derivatives equations, i check the time on my phone and go back to sleep.
This could either be fueled by the sheer volume of derivatives examples ive been going through or the high caffeine dosages in the past week.
I was wondering what other candidates go through in the week leading up to the exam?
Also, are we allowed coffee into the exam? I had some issues getting some in last time.
Kind regards, Myself

2024.05.19 13:02 Akranea [F4M] Longterm Overwatch RP!

Hey Roleplayers and Reddit users!
I've been wanting to do this for a while now and I am looking for people who want to play a character of the game (male only) to pair with me (female only character of the game) for some fun longterm RP. I have several plots prepared and ideas to share depending on what character you'd want to write/write with and I am happy to discuss more details and possible plots.
Heroes I am willing to write for this RP would be:
My preference is Gency, but I am terribly terribly picky about this and made a lot of horrible experiences. This is something I kind of want done right and if I don't see that happening, I am not willing to write this. If you are equally interested in building their relationship from the longterm point of view, I'd like to discuss.
Other than that I'll gladly play :
If you have ideas for this, wishes you want to include I am happy to discuss! That being said though, I am a very detailed writer and like it if my partners are as well, two paragraphs should be the least you should be able to write and maybe even extend it a little further. Third person would also be perfect, I think writing in first person is kind of awkward and I am not comfortable doing that.
One of my ideas as example is as follows: Both our characters are on a mission. The two need to work together to gather information, perhaps rescue a fellow agent. It is tense. The alarm is going off, red lights are filling corridors and guards begin to flood the building. They will have to hurry to complete their goal without being caught.
Another idea could be more about the slice of life part, what is happening behind the scenes, maybe even the mental toll these missions and the huge pressure has on the involved people. They could build a proper relationship, work on conquering their fears as well as work on themselves to become better and greater heroes! Naturally, I am in for all the action as well. Let's go beat up some bad (or good) guys!
I am pretty active but I only RP on discord so please keep that in mind. Also, I want to speak out a content warning for mature content. Please send the word hero to me so I know you've read this all in your first message.
I usually write 3 paragraphs as the least amount and would like for my partner to match me.
The following will be a roleplay sample of mine which depicts a semblance of my literacy:

Their escape through the ventilation system was not the greatest exit strategic, additionally, it was flawed and their position easily compromised. Amelie had already begun to lead the way towards what she figured was the very edge of the fortress where they'd be able to slither away into the night, but he was certainly not making this any more pleasant with his urgent request to hurry. "I am going as quick as I can, but as you are aware, wet clothes stick to these smooth surfaces perfectly well," and indeed it made it quite difficult to shift along the metal of the shafts. She felt the heat too, though for her the very start was certainly only comforting, drying both their bodies and clothes just a little before they'd soon face the consequences and most likely either burn to charcoal or get some lovely burn marks along their skin. That was what she expected, just until his larger frame pushed and squirmed past her before he could even see the glare she was shooting at him. "What do you think you are doing?" She asked lowly, and watched him repeatedly smack his arrow against the relatively thin wall of the ventilation shaft, that soon bulged and began to give in.
Her attention however was caught by his tattooed arm, which seemed to faintly illuminate the air in bright blue. It was just how the rumors proved. Something about him, about that tattoo he donned on his arm that gave him strength on an unimaginable scale. With great curiosity as she witnessed this did Amelie watch the wall next to them burst open, and him slip outside. No hesitation within her motions she followed, and the both stood shielded from the flames that followed. There was a certain thankfulness within her eyes as she looked upon him, knowing there was no reason for each other to linger. Nodding gently, she bid him a word-less farewell before Amelie too, disappeared into the night.
Months had passed after their run in and the mission report handed to Akande caused him to end up a little displeased over the next few days. He wanted the Shimada to be part of Talon, to have his power under their control and thus, increased the offered amount of money and goods should he ever end up appearing once more. Little did either of them know that the famed spider would soon once more come into the view of the archer.
Brazil, ten in the evening. Music played and echoed through the halls, setting the mood for such a high-class event where drinks were shared, dances were executed and most importantly, deals were made. Amelie attended on behalf of Talon, naturally so as she mostly would serve as informant that very night. As such, her gun was not a piece of her attire tonight.
Amelie stood tall and proud as she always did, and her dress once more proved that she was a confident woman. The black dress vacant of any prints upon it did her body justice. Cutting off high upon her thighs, a slit on the side revealing even more of those long, firm legs, the very front was just as revealing, the V shape cutting a rift between her plump breasts, fitting for a beautiful woman like her while the back was cut deep, revealing that signature spider tattoo on her pale skin that was caressed by the tip of her ponytail.
Her hand was firmly wrapped around a glass of red wine she sipped from while circling the area a little, searching for anyone worth being noted and not quite aware that a familiar archer was in the very same room. She stood with her back towards his direction at first, before she desired to move once more and caught the sight of the archer out of the corner of her eyes. He might have seen her smirk slyly, before she turned away again. Amelie knew when she was the huntress, but she did not approach her prey this time. No, he would need to hunger for a taste of her, and that'd let him approach her while she remained still.
Naturally, her thoughts had wandered to him before, thought back on his warmth he soared her in that locker, and at times she humored the thought of a misses romance, even if she was aware it was foolish and nothing alike her. No, she was the heartless woman that murdered her own husband years back, cold to the touch and emotionless. The perfect weapon that once had a loving heart.

2024.05.19 12:57 Logical_Act_6927 My boyfriend makes me paranoid and I donā€™t know what to do

TLDR: My boyfriend is amazing, but has depression which makes him constantly upset and irritated with me, making me extremely paranoid and on edge with everything I say because iā€™m scared heā€™ll get upset. He keeps saying heā€™d change, but goes back to how he was, but he is now seemingly making more of an effort to change by changing his medication and going to therapy. I still feel very paranoid and anxious with him even though he is doing better, but iā€™m worried that in the process of him getting fully better, heā€™ll go back to how he was, and I donā€™t know how much more of it I can take. He is an amazing man and I love him so much, but Iā€™m worried I will always feel on edge when Iā€™m with him. Any advice?
Hi! A little backstory, my boyfriend (19M) suffers from depression, and has always taken medication for it since he was younger. Right before we met, he had taken a gap year to focus on his mental health, and got to a point where he went off his medication because he didnā€™t like how it made him feel (zombie-like). We first met (we technically already knew each other but thatā€™s besides the point)around 4-5 months before he wouldā€™ve started college again, and got together around 2 months into being friends. As school came around, he became really scared that he would have to take another gap semesteyear, because even though getting off his medication helped to an extent, he was still struggling with dealing with his mental health. At the same time, he was worried about getting on medication because he told me that he experiences and adjustment period for the first 6 weeks that causes him to become irritable and agitated very easily and have increased suicidal ideation, but even after the adjustment period, irritability would still be a side effect that he had to deal with and manage.
Eventually, when school started, his mental health did become worse, so he decided to get on medication again, and he did go through an adjustment period. It was a struggle- it was hard seeing him very sad and depressed all the time, and I always tried to help him as best as I could- offering to help him get ready in the morning/drive him to school if he couldnā€™t get out of bed, helping him with assignments, etc.
At the same time, he definitely became constantly agitated with me. If I didnā€™t hear him say something and asked him to repeat it (although this was also an issue before he started the medication, but i feel like it got more pronounced), he would basically get very clearly annoyed and quiet, barely talking to me or shutting me down with one word responses. If i didnā€™t text him for a couple of hours (i have adhd and will sometimes forget to text, which i know is reasonable to be upset about, but he would also do the same thing when playing games with friends), or talked just a bit too much (another adhd symptom, which again i understand can get annoying because i can sometimes go on for VERY long), or if i forget something (an item, memory, or something he told me before), or if we have a recurring joke but for some reason just didnā€™t like it that day, or if i called him on the phone unprompted (which he does to me too, so i didnā€™t know that was something i couldnā€™t do) or if i just say any normal thing but for some reason he just didnā€™t like it that day, i would be met with irritation, passive aggressiveness, and the silent treatment. I wouldā€™ve been slightly more okay with it if it was just a few minutes and then he was back to normal, but he would continue like this for HOURS. If we started talking in the evening, and i said something that slightly annoyed him, it was basically a guarantee that he would be essentially silent for the rest of the night. Not only that, but this happened almost every single day.
Iā€™d like to note that he never expressed his irritation in an angry way, or yelled/said harmful things about me/did anything physical, he would just become very quiet, and anything he did say was very clearly in an irritated voice, as well as passive aggressive remarks.
Eventually, I talked about this with him. When i did, i basically completely forgot that his medication was a reason for a lot of what was happening, so when i talked to him about it, I didnā€™t mention medication at all. He told me that his medication caused a lot of his agitation and at first accused me of not believing that his medication caused side effects/not taking them seriously, but eventually apologized and said that it wasnā€™t an excuse and that heā€™d do better, but also said that sometimes i misinterpreted him as upset when he really wasnā€™t (which tbh i donā€™t believe, because sometimes if i pointed something out that he did, heā€™d say he wasnā€™t upset or annoyed at all, but a day or two later, tell me he was irritated with me).
He did do better for a bit, but after around a month it basically went to the same way it was before. This went on for a few months, I continued to have conversations with him, he continued to tell me heā€™d do better, and he would be a bit until he wasnā€™t. To be fair, after the 6 week adjustment period was over, he still was not doing well at all for about another month, and so he increased his medication dose, which made him have another adjustment period, and he did tell me that his biggest concern was how heā€™d treat me during that time, so I decided to keep being patient until he got his medication under control.
Fast forward a couple of months, and I was seeing improvements- until about 2 months ago. We saw each other a lot more often; before this time, weā€™d usually see each other 1-2 times a week and weā€™d have some sleepovers, but in those two months, iā€™d stay over at his house for 3-5 days a week. During this time, his irritation got way worse. He definitely valued his independence, but would continuously ask me to stay over, it wasnā€™t like I urged him to let me stay over. Here are some examples of things that happened:
  1. before i came over, he told me how he didnā€™t want to think about making food because he was stressed over schoolwork. I asked him if I could make him something, he told me yes, so I made pizza while he showered. Iā€™ve made pizza several times before, he made it once with me(also, iā€™ve cooked for years while he only started occasionally baking things when we got together since i liked to cook/bake), and when he came down, he saw the pizza dough was slightly stickier than it looked when he made it with me. He got annoyed and kept asking what I did wrong, and that from now on, i should only cook when he was with me to make sure I donā€™t mess it up, and then basically became extremely quiet for the next 15-30 minutes. I think he realized he sounded super weird saying this, and tried to turn it into a joke after those 30 minuted, but it made me feel really bad in the moment becsude I only wanted to do something nice for him. By the way, the pizza turned out great- my friend came over to eat with us and told us it was one of the best pizzas sheā€™s ever had.
  2. These next few are connected: The next day, he was at school, and I happened to not have school that day so I stayed at his house while he was there to rest because I had a really bad headache. Again, the past few days he told me how stressed he was about school, so I wanted to surprise him. I cleaned his room, made pizza sauce for pizza since we had extra dough (he really likes the pizza), and made him cookies because he told me he was craving them a few days before. He took an uber to school (he couldnā€™t drive yet at this point), and so I also offered to pick him up.
* The first thing that happened was he has a mildly confusing alarm system I had to disable before going outside to get to the car. If i didnā€™t do the steps correctly, the alarm would sound. Basically, I had to disable the alarm, go through the garage door and close it fully, press the button to open the garage, go back inside and press another button tot turn the alarm back on, and go out the garage door while itā€™s beeping and fully close the door again to stop the beeping. He told me these directions and I followed them, and the beeping continue to happen even after I closed the door. i texted him that I was walking out the garage but there was still beeping, he told me it was okay, but then the alarm went off. I think he thought that I didnā€™t close the garage door yet, which is why he thought it was okay? But apparently I didnā€™t wait for him to fully give him instructions (which I was genuinely confused about bc even looking back at the texts now he did), and he got extremely frustrated with me, telling me that because I didnā€™t properly follow directions, it was now going to call his parents. He kept saying that it was whatever, and that heā€™d just take an uber, but I apologized profusely and kept telling him that Iā€™d do it right. He texted his mom, and apparently he told me to press the wrong button, and that i need to press a different one instead after going back in through the garage door. In the moment, he kept saying that the other button was still right and always works for him, but later he admitted that he was probably wrong about it. * The second thing that happened isnā€™t really a big deal, but iā€™ll still include it. My boyfriend also has anxiety, and is a very big backseat driver. However, backseat driving makes me extremely paranoid and be a worse driver, so itā€™s just a never ending cycle. I would be following the directions on the GPS, and he would keep telling me the directions as if I canā€™t see them myself. For example, if iā€™m about to turn right, heā€™d would keep repeating ā€œturn right over hereā€ a bunch of times, each one more with more urgency, as if it isnā€™t what I was already doing. He will pick apart everything I do, and tell me not to talk too much or turn the music up too loud because it would distract me. Again, to be fair, because of my ADHD, I do get distracted easily, even on the road, but itā€™s usually pretty manageable, and Iā€™m able to talk on the phone/listen to music when driving when Iā€™m by myself. The problem is with him, I get paranoid over what iā€™m doing, so I get distracted, and I guess that makes it seem like the music/talking is whatā€™s distracting me. Again, when he backseat drives, he also gets extremely agitated/quiet, and he basically continued on like that for the next few hours. * Lastly, when we got home, he was irritated over everything I did. I did leave a bit later than I told him I would because of the things I was preparing (i think i left at 3:15 instead of 3), but I told him beforehand, and he told me to take my time and come anytime I wanted to since I was going out of my way to drive him(be told me this right when I offered to drive him and after I told him iā€™d be a bit late). When we got home, I told him about what i made and that I cleaned his room, but he got upset because I made the pizza sauce/cookies because he wanted us to do it together. I told him that I wouldā€™ve loved to make them together, but just wanted to surprise him because he told me he had a lot of work to do and told me he was craving cookies earlier. He said that he didnā€™t have as much work anymore, and told me that he thought I knew that because he told me the assignments he need to do (i did know that most of the deadlines were for that day and the day before, but he told me he had some deadlines for a few days after and had told me his whole week was busy, but I guess to him I shouldā€™ve know that most of his pressing work wouldā€™ve been done that day). He was upset with me again for another few hours, and I tried to tell him there were things we could still do together like assemble the pizza, make something the next day, etc, but he wasnā€™t having it. Eventually a few hours later he got over it and told me he appreciated that I made him those things, and he was disappointed that we couldnā€™t do it together, and then mentioned that he was grateful that I cleaned up for him (he didnā€™t mention it before).
Several other things happened, but I think thatā€™s enough to somewhat get the picture. The biggest thing that happened though was just a couple of weeks ago. We hadnā€™t seen each other in maybe 2-3 weeks, and so I was really excited to get to see him. He had an exam that day, so I offered to drive him, and he again said that he didnā€™t want to worry about making food. The day before he told me he was craving pizza, so yet again I said iā€™d make it before i came over (starting to think pizza and me driving is cursed). I asked him before if it was okay that I made him pizza, and he said yes, and so we agreed that I would get to his house around 2 (it was maybe 10 am at the time). I bought supplies and started making the pizza. after a while though, I guess he changed his mind about me making the pizza because it took a while. Around 1, I could tell he was getting annoyed. He kept saying that the pizza wasnā€™t important enough bc i couldā€™ve been at his house already. I finished making the pizza and got to his house pretty early, maybe 5-10 minutes before 2. After that, I was still waiting in the car for another 30 minutes because he was still getting ready, and he got to my car around 2:30. He was still very upset and annoyed with me and gave me the silent treatment. I tried to keep the mood light, but again, he just didnā€™t say anything. When we were driving, I asked him if he wanted to play music, and what song I should play, but justā€¦ complete silence, not even a nod or head shake or anything. For the entire ride he was just on his phone, texting a few friends, and I started to silently cry because I felt so unappreciated. When we got to his campus, he went to a reserved room, but I had to stay in the car because i have a tutoring job thatā€™s online, and had a session at the same time we parked. The person I was supposed to tutor wasnā€™t there for the session, which was lucky for me because right when my boyfriend left, I started sobbing. When I got out of the car I was still crying as I was walking across the street, and decided to call my friend to take my mind off of everything. Her girlfriend also went to the same college as my boyfriend, and I didnā€™t know exactly where I was supposed to go, so I called her to help me find where I needed to go. Since we were calling, I didnā€™t see some texts my boyfriend sent me, but I finally found the room. I was a bit cheered up from my friend but still sad, but wanted to act happy and normal in case he was just randomly in a bad mood and just needed a distraction. When I came in, I was happy to see him and made some jokes, but all he said was ā€œwhy didnā€™t you text meā€ in the most monotone, upset voice. I told him that I was sorry and forgot, would do better next time, and was going to explain that I was on the phone so i didnā€™t see his texts, but he interrupted me and said something like ā€œi donā€™t care about you telling me youā€™re going to do better, just actually do itā€ in the meanest, irritated tone. It doesnā€™t seem like a big deal at all, but he has never retorted at me like that before, especially in the way he did. That was my final straw, and I just completely broke down and started crying. He kept asking me to talk to him and tell me what I was thinking, which only made it worse because it was pretty clear as to why I was crying. He comforted me, apologized, and then had to leave for his exam. For the next 4 hours he was in his exam, I was just crying nonstop. When he came back, I was still crying, and he kept apologizing and asked if I was going to break up with him. I told him I wasnā€™t, and then told him that this happened so often and I felt like no matter what I did, there was something I was doing wrong, and that I felt unloveable. He again apologized a lot and told me he loved me, and later told me that he really wanted to change his medication and get therapy.
A few days later, a similar thing happened, but not to that extent. My boyfriend just got his license and offered to pick me up from one of my exams. I told him I wasnā€™t sure how long the exam would be, and didnā€™t want to let him know yet because it couldā€™ve taken very long. I was right- it was supposed to be from 12-3, but I ended up starting later end ending around 6:30. I texted him after I finished, but he told me he wished I wouldā€™ve let him know earlier because he wasnā€™t comfortable driving in the dark yet, which is reasonable. He became very quiet and upset again though, and again, anytime I made conversation, he would shut it down and be really upset. I also told him that I had to move out of my dorm, and so he didnā€™t have to come if he didnā€™t want to because it wouldā€™ve been a lot of things to haul out. He said that it was okay and that he wanted to see me, and so he came over. When he did, he got upset again because we fooled around for an hour or two instead packing everything up (which he initiated), and then as we started pskcking, he became mean and frustrated again. He kept saying that he just didnā€™t expect to be moving me out, and that he just wanted to pick me up and go home, even though so told him before that thatā€™s what was going to happen. After everything was packed up and we were in the car, he was still silent and upset but a bit less so. I felt really bad and became quiet, and he told me and i quote: ā€œiā€™m feeling really anxious to drive this car at night, so can you just act normalā€, which felt weird for him to say because I was only acting like that because of he as acting mean. I wanted to get home though because it was pretty late, so I just played some music and acted like my normal self, and that made me feel a bit better. When we got home, he apologized again, and thanked me for being patient with him, and that heā€™d be getting help soon.
After that, he did become a lot nicer to me. There were things Iā€™ve said which I was sure he was going to get upset over, but he just didnā€™t at all. Usually, even after heā€™d apologize other times, he would still get a bit upset with me, but itā€™d only last a few minutes before he became normal again. This time, he wasnā€™t upset at all even for the things heā€™d most commonly get upset about (like me not hearing what he said for example). Hes been this way for around 2 weeks, and had not been getting upset at all, and he said heā€™s getting therapy soon.
The problem now is, especially because of the last two incidents, I still feel extremely anxious and paranoid when Iā€™m with him. I am constantly on edge because Iā€™m worried Iā€™ll say the wrong thing when Iā€™m with him, and itā€™ll be just like how it has been for the past almost one year.
Looking back at what i just wrote, these instances donā€™t really seem like that big of a deal, especially compared to how some other people are treated on this subreddit. I think what makes me upset is just how often it happens and how it completely messes up our entire day because heā€™s just upset the entire time. In the past 3-4 months, I donā€™t think weā€™ve ever had a call/hangout where he upset for at least 1-2 hours. I think another thing that really hurts me is that he just acts completely different around me vs anyone else. A lot of the times when I call him, he will get so upset and annoyed so quickly for menial things. He plays games for hours a day, so sometimes when weā€™re facetime and he wants to play with some friends, heā€™ll set his camera up so I can watch him play while i do other things, kind of like a youtube video. Whenever weā€™re on call and heā€™s upset, and then tells me he wants to play and sets his camera up, his mood instantly changes. His face literally brightens up, and he seems so much happier and talkative. I will sometimes hear his friends on the other end, and they will say/do the exact same things that he gets annoyed at me with, and it just is not a big deal at all, he doesnā€™t even seem to notice that it happened. Same with my friends- One day, we were planning a trip to the beach, and were supposed to leave around 12 PM. When he came home, he became upset and quiet with me again, and I kept asking him what was wrong and if weā€™re still going on our trip, but he just ignored me. Finally, at around 6 PM, he was normal again, and then took another hour and a half to get ready, so we ended up leaving at 7:30 PM. My friend was texting me at the same time, so I told my boyfriend to talk to her while I was driving. As we were driving (we were around 15 minutes away at this point), I realized I forgot my license. I asked him if I should turn around, he kept telling me he wasnā€™t sure, and he was just very upset and annoyed with me, even though judt before we left a whole 7 hours later because he was upset. We drove for an hour before he decided that I should drive back, and I kept apologizing for forgetting my license, and that we could try again tomorrow morning. His mom told us we could go to dinner or something to make up for the day, and I asked him if he wanted to do that, and he just said ā€œwhy would we do that what would we even eatā€ in a harsh tone. Again, I tried to keep it light, telling him that I was sorry and we could start fresh tomorrow, and he said that he didnā€™t want to go to the beach anymore in an upset tone. Again, for half of the night after we came home, he was upset and irritated with me. Later that night, I looked back at. the texts between my friend and boyfriend, and I was in shock with just how different he was acting with me in real life vs how he was acting with her. As he was upset with me, he was texting her with updates, making jokes, and basically just making it seem like it wasnā€™t a big deal at all that I didnā€™t have my license. In real life, he acted like I was so stupid for forgetting it, and that it was the worst thing I couldā€™ve possibly done.
I feel like most people who read this might just think he values his independence, and that aim too clingy. I too thought that maybe I just wasnā€™t giving him his space, especially because Iā€™m his first girlfriend. I will not offer to call/come over as much just to see if Iā€™m the one asking too often and he feels too bad to say no, but when I donā€™t, he will keep asking me to call him and come over, and ask why I havenā€™t been talking to him as much/initiates calls or hangouts. Heā€™ll tell me to call more often and hang out with him more often as well. If we hang out, Iā€™ll tell him that Iā€™ll go home for the night and donā€™t plan on sleeping over, and heā€™ll keep asking me if I could sleep over or when I could sleep over, and continue to make plans.
Despite what Iā€™ve said, my boyfriend is genuinely the most amazing guy anyone could ever meet. Heā€™s sweet, kind, and thoughtful with genuinely everyone- his parents, my friends, his friends, his professors, everyone. He is an amazing tipper, he goes out of his way to do things for my friends, and anytime i mention the slightest thing heā€™ll go out of his way to do it for me. For example, in the first month we met, he noticed my backpack and headphones were completely broken, so he bought me a new ones without me saying absolutely anything to him. When I drove him places, he saw that it was difficult for me to look at my phone to follow GPS directions, so he randomly bought me a car phone holder. On my birthday, he made me a card out of the acknowledgement page of the first book we read together, crossed out the authors name, and put my name, and wrote a bunch of sweet, adorable things about me. Because of my adhd, I would constantly forget to chargemy phone/laptop or bring my chargers, and would constantly have no charge on both, so he bought me a pack with 10 of each type of charger, as well as a portable charger. I offhandedly mentioned that I get really carsick, so he bought me dramamine and those carsickness goggles. He bought pads to keep with him just in case I need some, and always carries pepto and advil around because i get headaches a lot and have lots of stomachaches. He helped me move into my dorm, and bought me so many food and supplies even when I insisted that he didnā€™t. Whenever we go out with my friends, he always covers everything. For my friendā€™s birthday, everyone was going to chip in to buy her airpods, but he told them heā€™d cover their part and essentially just bought them for her. He is an insanely hard worker, and I am so proud of him for everything that heā€™s been through, and he is also just the most fun person to be around. I love him so so much, and I know that a lot of the way heā€™s acted is because of his depression, and I know that thatā€™s not really him. I visited him yesterday and we had a really good time, but the entire time I kept being really careful with what I said because I was scared of him becoming upset. Iā€™m scared that this anxiety I feel around him will last forever. I want to wait until he has everything under control, but if he becomes the same way that he was before again, I donā€™t know how much of it I can take. I donā€™t know what to do or where to go from here- can anyone help me?

2024.05.19 12:49 Murky-Mango5678 AITAH for not caring even though my boyfriend apologised to me

I'm going to keep it short and simple, my boyfriend (22)M and I (21) F have been arguing past few days. The argument started small where I told him I felt lonely and he wasn't doing anything to comfort me. (We are in a LDR and so couldn't meet often) I told him that he wasn't talking to me as much as he used to and everytime we talk it's either about his gym or him showing me photos.
Now don't get me wrong I love being a part of his daily activities but it gets annoying when all he ever does is talk about gym and his problems. I've tried Communicating it a few times in the past but he just shrugs it off saying I'm being toxic and that he's just happy to include me in his life virtually.
Last Sunday, we argued about about the same things and he got really frustrated. The conversation was very heated and he said a few things I didn't like, one of which being "you never see how much efforts I put." I felt terrible and just said sorry and wasn't in the mood to communicate any further.
The thing that stung me was him thinking I don't care about him or his efforts. I do. I just wanted him to talk to me, to listen to me. (A while back I tried spilling some tea to him and was very excited to tell him about a few achievements of my own but the response I got was very dull. There was no energy and the topic was skipped within minutes. I felt like crying but didn't cause it would've just ruined the mood)
After our last argument, he apologised a few times but I that wasn't going to make it any better. I just wanted him to comfort me, to reassure me that I matter. I did forgave him and since then he tried to dilute the situation by sharing wholesome memes and stuff but this just wasn't making it better either. After 2 days of trying and me not giving him the energy he always got (double texts, frequent meme sharing, talking 24/7, replying to him instantly, asking about his day etc . .) He stopped.
Its been 5 days since and he still is not talking to me, I did tried once but we ended up fighting again, his words were "fuck I don't want this shit" and I cried alot about it. I just ended the conversation with "leave we just make ourselves stressed and miserable". He said yes that's true and is now not texting or doing anything to bench the gap.
I have mixed feelings because he's constantly targeting me through his socials (through songs or quotes and stuff) and I couldn't care less. I hate it but at the same time .....I love how I'm free now. This all happened during my university exams and he knew how stressed I have been, I just wanted some comfort in him..... SO... aita for being selfish and not understanding his pov? Ps- sorry for the grammatical errors English isn't my first language

2024.05.19 12:37 Trust_Foreign Change parameters of mri sequences

Hi everyone, I would like to ask you resonance technicians if, in the structures where you work, how much and if you have freedom of interaction on the sequence parameters. In the structure where I work, for example, I have total freedom in choosing the parameters of the sequences, both during the exam and when I deem it necessary to make changes to the protocols themselves. It would also be interesting to know which points you focus on when creating or editing a sequence. Thanks for your attention

2024.05.19 12:34 perilous_moment Who is your favorite fixer?

Mine would have to be Mr. Hands. He's strictly business who demands excellence in those who work for him and more importantly in himself. He appreciates the virtuoso he has in V and in her case heaping praise is just a "mere restating of the facts." And he brews a wicked cup of tea.

2024.05.19 12:18 rollotar300 (popular/unpopular opinion?) I think James' maturity is what makes the most sense (although I also think it wouldn't have hurt JK to include a couple of scenes of adult James and Lily to settle the matter)

Because JK Rowling did the tell and don't show thing when it comes to James Potter's maturity, there was a split in the fandom between whether to believe he truly changed or not, but I think based on the circumstances in which that James's life changed, I choose to believe that he changed with it.
First of all, there is a biological issue and that is that the human brain does not fully develop until well into the age of 20s, so from the outset I have reason to assume that simply due to physical development, a 15 year old James would not be the same as the James who died at 21 in the same way as a 10 year old is not similar to his 15 year old version
But what really leads me to be positioned in the belief that he mature were all the changes that occurred in his life in that period of 6 years, if we compare the 15 year old James and a 20 year old, 1 year before his death, the truth is that they are quite different people.
The 15 year old James, seems above all like a normal teenager in the sense that it seems that his only concerns at that moment are mundane: getting good grades on exams, playing quidditch, having fun with his friends as well as being pampered by his parents.
In short, a fairly comfortable life that a priori does not seem to require many responsibilities beyond those conventional for someone of his age.
But 20 year old James' life has taken quite a few turns, some of which are good and others quite unpleasant.
Legally, he is an adult and has been orphaned, which means that he no longer has parental support and is fully responsible for himself. Now he must decide how to manage money, for example, and assume the consequences of these decisions because his parents are no longer here to take care of him or help him (in addition to the emotional consequences that being an orphan can cause to a person), related to the above, he now has a wife and a son which adds even more responsibilities.
Also, another thing that differentiates him from the 15 year old James is that he is no longer a student safe within the walls of Hogwarts and now he has to face the real world and the crises that the magical world is going through, the most immediate obviously being Voldemort's war, in which he takes sides and was presumably forced to witness or learn of the deaths of many people he came to know, maybe even to be friends, as Moody tells Harry when he shows him a photo of the original order of the phoenix there were many casualties during the first wizarding war and this is going to be reinforced by Sirius when he talks about the first war magical in GoF and by Lily with the letter she sends to Sirius, so all of them including James have had to see the death of a lot of partners and even friends after leaving Hogwarts, something that James15 obviously didn't have to go through.
Once I compared these 2 stages of James' life, I think there had to be a change in him due to all the important things that happened in his life.

2024.05.19 12:03 John_Swift1 How I passed my SHRM-CP (without the Learning System)

As I was studying for the SHRM-CP exam, I came across several posts on here that were useful in helping me along the process, so I thought I would share some information on how I passed for future test takers. Please note that I did NOT purchase the SHRM Learning System. I studied by myself using free online resources and a few books I bought off Amazon. Prep/Study Time
I studied for about 4ā€“5 weeks. On weekdays I studied between 1ā€“3 hours per day, on the weekends I would do 4ā€“6 hours per day, and during the last 7ā€“10 days, I studied about 4ā€“6 hours per day. Of course, I took a few nights off here and there as well. Keep in mind that you may need to study more or less given your work experience (I have a Masterā€™s in I/O Psych and about 2 years of relevant work experience). To be honest, I wish I had started studying 2ā€“3 weeks earlier. I would recommend giving yourself at least 1.5ā€“2 months to prepare for this exam.
Resources:
  1. SHRM BoCK ā€” This is a free PDF that you can download off the SHRM website. I used this resource to guide my overall learning. I dissected the entire document and made flashcards on Quizlet for everything I did not know. In particular, I focused on the ā€œkey conceptsā€ for each section and made sure I knew the definition of each term. There is also a glossary of terms and definitions at the end of the document, so I added all those terms into Quizlet as well. The glossary does not have every definition you will need to know, but itā€™s a good start. For the terms I could not find a definition for, I would either
A) Google it
B) see how the SHRM website defines it,
C) use one of my other resources to find a definition
D) go to Youtube to learn more.
2) SHRM-CP Exam by certexamdb Test Prep: You can find in here
I explored a few different practice exams, but this was by far the most useful. You cannot use this as your only resource, but it is a great start.
3) PHSPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne Bogardus: You can actually find a PDF of this online for free. At some point throughout the study process (usually after a practice exam), you will likely realize that you need to go into more depth with certain concepts. This is where this study guide comes in. I didnā€™t read it word for word, but I spent a few hours skimming through it, went through some of the practice questions at the end of each chapter, and read in detail certain sections that I was weak on. This resource is very detailed but not too complicated which is great. I would highly recommend allocating 1ā€“2 study days just for going through this resource. Keep in mind that it will provide you with more detail than you need, but you can just focus on the concepts that are relevant to the SHRM-CP.
4) SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Certification Practice Exams (All in One) by Kelly and Simon-Walters. About 10 days before my exam, I came across this resource which consisted of 500 questions that were broken down into each of the sections outlined in the SHRM BoCK. When I took the practice exam in the certexamdb Test Prep I scored terribly on the situational judgment questions. This book is GREAT for preparing you for those questions. Just keep in mind two things when using this resource:
It will consist of some questions with terms or concepts that you did not come across in any of the other resources ā€” you can just ignore those (itā€™s extra information that you do not necessarily need), (2) the quick answer key has some inaccuracies (ignore it) but the answer key with detailed explanations is correct so make sure you use that when scoring yourself. Make sure you answer both the SHRM-CP and the SHRM-SCP questions (they are both relevant). This really helps with the situational judgment questions, but also with knowing how some of the terms and definitions apply in a real setting. When focusing on these questions, I realized that I had memorized some definitions, but I still didnā€™t know how to apply those concepts. This book helps with that.
5) Quizlet Flashcards created by other people ā€” A lot of people have created quizlet sets (even from the Learning System) that they have uploaded. Those are free, so make sure you use them! Also, some people have even created practice sets for exam questions (which I think are from the learning system as well), so make sure you review those as well! Basic Study Tips: Unfortunately, without the Learning System, there is no single resource that you can use to prepare for this exam. Therefore, make sure you use a few resources just to make sure you get exposed to most of the material that will be on the exam. As you go through each resource, keep revising your flashcards and adding new ones. Make sure you periodically review flashcards as you go rather than waiting to cram everything in a week before the exam. When you go through practice questions, you will soon realize that you often need to know more than just the definitionā€¦ you need to know when and how something applies as well. For example, you need to know what FMLA is, but you also need to know what the eligibility criteria is, when it is applicable, etcā€¦ I had one massive set of flashcards (about 500), and then I also had smaller sets of flashcards for some sections (e.g., a set for HR Laws, another set for Finance/Accounting terms). I would memorize using the smaller sets, but then I went through the giant set I had created a few days before my exam to make sure I knew everything. Do a ton of practice questions and understand why you got certain questions wrong.
6) SHRM LMS Books
Hereā€™s a quick overview of the step-by-step process I took to study and prepare:
  1. Go through SHRM-BoCK and create flashcards
  2. Go through and memorize SHRM Learning System Flashcards (You can find these on Quizlet and search ā€œSHRM Learning Systemā€)
  3. Take certexamdb Test Prep Practice Exam, review, and identify weak areas.
  4. Go through the Bogardus PHSPHR book and focus on weak areas (fill in flashcards)
  5. Memorize the newly created flashcards for weak areas, flag ones that you continually get wrong or confused with.
  6. YouTube hazy concepts and terms to gain a richer understanding, use Khan Academy when applicable.
  7. Retake certexamdb Practice Exam
  8. Go through questions in the book by Kelly and Simon-Walters
  9. Identify weak areas, read through explanations, create and memorize flash cards as needed
  10. A few days before my exam, focus on my large stack of flashcards, go through other peopleā€™s flashcard sets, and go through practice exams on Quizlet.
Exam Experience and Takeaways
I finished the exam in a little over three hours. You get no breaks, but you can always take them as needed. Time is likely not going to be an issue. Here are some takeaways that I had about the exam: ā€” There were surprisingly few questions on US Employment Laws & Regulations and Labor Unions. I spent a lot on these sections when studying, but there were not many questions at all on these topics. ā€” The test questions were different than any of the practice exams I had taken (however you should be fine as long as you know the material) ā€” The situational judgment questions can be exhausting with having to read 2ā€“3 paragraphs for each 2ā€“3 questions. ā€” Make sure you carefully read the question. For example, you are often asked ā€œwhat is the first step you would takeā€ or ā€œwhat strategy would you use.ā€ These can be tricky, but they can also easily reveal the right answer. ā€” No matter how hard you study, you will encounter a few questions where you come across terms that youā€™re unfamiliar with and you will have to guess blindly. Just try to eliminate what you do know is wrong and take your best guess. Donā€™t stress too much about it. ā€” Use the highlight, strike through, and flagging options during the exam. It helps a lot. ā€” Often, the correct answers for the situational judgment questions have something to do with (1) getting leadership buy-in, (2) having HR be a strategic partner, (3) making sure the action is aligned with the orgā€™s mission and vision (4) HR being proactive, (5) doing a needs assessment of some sort, (6) having HR be some sort of facilitator.

2024.05.19 11:42 AFrostNova Can a language's writing system affect its native speakers memory?

I was recently having a debate with a friend. He is a native speaker of mandarin & cantonese, and while I am a native english speaker. The essence of our discussion was whether or not character based languages innately improve a speakers memory vs alphabet based languages?
Their argument (for) was that this was the same topics such as the argument with Japanese blue v Green & perception. Language you learn affects the way your brain operates, so it is by itself a possible claim. Expanding on this, the number of characters you need to know for fluently engaging in society is significantly larger than the number of letters you need to know. He argued that if you forget a word you can sound it out & guess the meaning from its root and prefixes/affixed. He additionally brought up memorizing stroke order (but my counter there, that stroke order is fairly consistent across characters & intuitiveh
I argued against, as we don't read words one letter at a time anyway. It is remembering whole words, and to that end his own argument (remembering root words, prefixes, etc.) not only makes it comparable to mandarin, but in my opinion the Chinese radical system actually makes it easier to guess the meaning of a new character (at least in traditional) compared to english. Additionally I think the comparison to the "blue/green" studies is unfair - this feels to be a better example of nature v nurture. Does something about being a character based language speaker improve your memory, or does the fact that their (in china) education system emphasis memorization (poetry recitation, etc) lead to it.
That is a huge oversimplification of our discussion it was multiple hours. But the gist is, is there something about chinese & other character based languages that make their speakers better at remembering things?

2024.05.19 11:42 Asleep_Magazine_5528 I (25M) made a huge mistake with (24F) - was it the mistake or was she not even interested before this?

I (25M) matched with a girl (24F) on hinge. We were texting each other once every day or so for just over a week then organised to go on a date. The date went great - she did mention that she has accounting exams coming up soon with her job so she was going to be busy the next couple of months. But we both had a great time and I had no doubts we wanted to see eachother again after the date - she even gave me her umbrella to take home as it was raining and she got a taxi home.
We continued texting once a day - finding out more in common and I mentioned that Iā€™m a fan of Mexican food and she said she is too and she said that could be our next date idea. She then asked when I was free and I booked a restaurant (2 weeks after the first date as she was busy due to a family wedding the weekend after the first date). She also mentioned that as itā€™s September now, itā€™s go time in terms of revision.
We met up at the restaurant and the date went fine, again no doubts and lots in common. She mentioned that due to a health condition she doesnā€™t like to drink alcohol when itā€™s super hot so she ordered a mocktail instead with her food.
We then went to a rooftop bar afterwards which Iā€™d booked as the weather was really warm. When we got to the rooftop, the girl said it feels hotter up here than it does downstairs (which it did) and she asked me to push a button on my side of the table (I think she assumed it may have been connected to a fan). But when I pushed the button the outdoor heaters turned on which was quite embarrassing and the people in the bar started laughing. I laughed too but it did throw me off and make me feel awkward. The girl did apologise to me and them and was laughing too.
But we sat down and continued chatting - I felt the conversation wasnā€™t flowing as well due to the awkwardness but there were no awkward silences. I ordered a cocktail but the menu was a little limited for mocktails - I did ask her if she wanted to go somewhere else but she said donā€™t worry itā€™s ok. She ended up just having water.
Once i finished my drink, she said sheā€™s going to head off so we walked to the train station together - we didnā€™t stay at the rooftop for very long. I was still feeling awkward as the last part of the date didnā€™t go how Iā€™d hoped but I asked if she wanted to go out again and she said yeah definitely so I gave her a quick kiss and said bye.
I messaged her on instagram while I was on my way home and just gave her my phone number and said let me know when youā€™re home.
She texted me that evening and said ā€˜hey thanks for dinner tonight - honestly next time you have to let me get the bill! It was v good to see you again. Hope you got home okay xā€™.
I replied that Thursday evening and said ā€˜hey no worries itā€™s all good, but youā€™re organising the next oneā€™. She then reacted to that message with a little heart on Saturday and said ā€˜howā€™s your Saturday been, sorry for the late reply been super busy my sister is visitingšŸ˜‚ā€™ - she did mention that her sister was visiting before we went on the second date. I replied on the Sunday with general convo. She replied on the Monday as usual, being communicative, telling me about her weekend and all the things she did and also asking me more about what I was doing. She also said ā€˜so not a productive weekend in terms of revisionšŸ˜ā€™
I replied on the Tuesday, making general conversation again. I didnā€™t hear back from her on Wednesday, Thursday (which was when I started to get anxious) or Friday. I assumed she had a busy week with work and revision so Iā€™d hear back Friday evening. I also noticed that at some point after the second date she changed one of her prompts on her hinge dating profile - a small change from ā€˜give me travel tips to Thailandā€™ to ā€˜give me travel tips to Miamiā€™. She didnā€™t update any pictures or anything else and as weā€™d only been out twice Iā€™m guessing this is normal? She also mentioned on the second date that sheā€™d booked her Miami holiday.
I still didnā€™t hear back from her and then made a massive mistake Saturday morning and sent her another message which said ā€˜if you werenā€™t interested why not just say. Youā€™re a bit of an arsehole to say you wanna go out again, pay and all that then just ignore meā€™. She responded an hour and a half later and said ā€˜I wasnā€™t trying to ignore you - I was genuinely busy this week. But you calling me an arsehole is so uncalled for and tbh I donā€™t want to see someone whoā€™s going to call me names so Iā€™d rather just call it a dayā€™. I called to try and apologise but she didnā€™t pick up so I messaged ā€˜I get youā€™re busy with exams. Like I fully understand that but it takes 2 seconds to say hey Iā€™m busy right now Iā€™ll get back to you. Tbh it comes across like youā€™re not interested and a bit rude. So Iā€™m sorry I called you an arsehole but I called you as I wanted to chat to you quicklyā€™. She replied and said ā€˜sorry missed your call - Iā€™m out. Yeah fairs I get that but the exams are my priority. I feel like Iā€™ve said what I need to say and think itā€™s just best if we leave it hereā€™. I messaged again trying to sort it out but she didnā€™t reply. I gave it three weeks and apologised more sincerely and she said itā€™s all good no hard feelings but sheā€™s got a lot on right now so she doesnā€™t think it would be best to give it a second chance. I said if itā€™s the exams I donā€™t mind if you wanna speak again after theyā€™re all done, but she didnā€™t reply to that message.
I reached out again after a couple months as I saw her on the same dating app and her profile was updated with new pictures and she said she just doesnā€™t see this going anywhere and good luck with everything - she then blocked me. Iā€™m assuming she was finished with her exams by this point.
I fully understand that I was completely in the wrong with the way I reacted and Iā€™ve learnt the lesson and wonā€™t ever speak to anyone like that again - I regret it so much because I could see myself liking her and she honestly seemed like the most perfect girl, although we only went on 2 dates and spoke for a month. But do you think it was me calling her an arsehole that caused her to end it (completely valid if so) or if she just wasnā€™t feeling it before this and I gave her an easy way out?

2024.05.19 11:12 Accomplished_Pea_250 Is it a good decision to not date anyone unless it feels right again or maybe till I'm 26?

I'm 22-M from north India. I have been cheated on/ left/ or rather just things couldn't work for me in my first relationship. She left me for some well-doing guy when I was nineteen. No blame, we were Kids. I'm pursuing ACCA right now. I'm focused, clearing exams in one go.
I just feel like the dating world is not for me because I've not been the best-looking or most wealthy guy out there or maybe because my lifestyle doesn't allow me to meet many people. Even if I meet someone (I met a mutual friend), We don't' click easily. I'm more of an old-school guy inside, although I'm not a simp, I simply talk with honesty instead of saying things like, "You're a queen, please disrespect me".
Seeing the society we live in; most people expect that you'll become some sort of "Yes Man" for them.
For example, a girl told me that She wanted to explore people before telling me yes. Who wants to be a last resort plan? I walked away.
After that, with study hours around eight, working on my hobby of writing, taking care of my health, and some days, studying for 10-12 hours takes a chunk of my day. Even if not all days are like this, I'm not willing to give anyone the position where they can decide how I feel throughout my day.
This is different from not wanting to put effort because if you're my girlfriend, I'd like to take you on dates or talk to you about how you feel, but I'm not a guy to say "Please meri bandi ban jaa".
I don't have demands like "bandi ki hips itni chaudi honi chahiye or lips itne mote hone chahiye". I would rather go for a loyal girl, who can hold a conversation and have clear communication skills. Also, not a person to hop on the next big deal, I tend to commit and want to know my partner on a deeper level. I expect similar things from my partner. Since I'm not someone who is looking for a hot girl, I'm also someone who doesn't want to build a relationship based on money. Money comes from working hard, and developing skills etc., you can judge me if I'm disciplined at my work or not but I'm not someone who wants to be pursued for how good-looking, rich etc. I am, or you are. Same standards on both sides. This doesn't mean that I do not bring financial stability or anything of that sort. But there is a difference between dating for that job or car and dating the person. That's also true that We can't know at first sight what a person wants but let's say we can at least guess.
So, reflecting on my needs, what sort of person I am etc., I feel like I would rather focus on myself for a while. I don't want to waste time standing on the roadside and asking my female friends to set me up with someone for a short term.
I'm planning to focus on my academics, work, my passion for writing, and mental and physical health and I'd like to build connections with people, irrespective of their gender and without wanting to redeem the connection into some sort of fling. Just platonic, trying to know as many people as people in my surroundings and professional network If someday, I click with someone naturally, it's good otherwise, I don't feel like selling my soul just for a relationship.
My question is- "Am I on the correct Path? Am I missing something in life by focusing on other aspects of life and leaving dating, finding love etc.?"
I'd like to know your views about my plan and would appreciate any suggestions if provided. Would like to know your gender and age, (so that I know where it is coming from) with your response.
Thanks in Advance.

2024.05.19 10:59 exsapphi New Zealand needs to be looking towards a green future for our own economic viability (as told through the history of glass)

The thing about this climate crisis that no one talks about is that economically, this is not new. This is the same sort of shift as any other massive economic shift we've seen in history, whether resulting from technology or environment or society or any combination of the three. It will be rapid; as rapid as the economic expansion of Europe when it discovered just how profitable colonisation and slavery were. But it's not really anything unseen in an economic sense.
How markets work is this: everything is just supply and demand. If there is a known demand for something, in a roundabout way, the market will ensure that demand is supplied. It might melt a few glaciers in the meantime, or be delayed by a war or two, but it's a force akin to that of nature, or evolution, or cause and effect. The markets will balance. Eventually.

A detour through history

The Chinese never developed eye-glasses. They didn't have the need for glass, because their drink of choice was tea, so the materials they worked with were mostly ceramics. In Europe, the cultural drink of refinement was wine. This didn't need to be kept hot, or be brewed and poured perfectly and all that stuff I'm told is important with tea. But it had requirements and qualities of its own, and one of them is that it looks pretty on display -- and that's why Europe developed and refined glass so much faster than China.
Glass is an incredibly old invention. It's fragile, much more fragile than pottery, so we rarely find it in archeological digs. But it's been invented in and/or expanded to many many cultures throughout history since at least 2000 BC in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Syria, followed by the Greeks, the Romans, the Canaan, and the Persians. Basically anyone with an empire, including the Chinese, was making glass. Unfortunately they'd only just discovered transparent glass by the late Bronze Age, when the Bronze Age collapsed due to a series of environmental, migratory and urban changes.
(A good reminder that historically, periods of mass technological advancement are followed by civilisation collapses and dark ages. Until the present, of course. But that's been true of every present.)
A lot of glass-making technology was lost, but some important things were saved and some new stuff was rediscovered, and most of this discovering happened in Europe because they had, as I mentioned, wine. And rich people wanted to show off their pretty, colourful wine, and that only worked if your glass was transparent. And Italy had access to pure silica quartz, plus soda ash via their trade with the Levant, and so some clever spark there developed the first pair of eyeglasses.
And that's how you have Mecca, Italy and Venice (the latter of whom had been producing the famous Venetian glass, but moved all their glassmakers to Italy because they'd built all their buildings out of wood) all mass producing eye-glasses with consistent standards for Europe and the Middle East by the 14th century.
This might seem like a small development, but gradual loss of sight used to be a disability. Like, it seriously disabled people from doing many things. Far-sightedness meant artisans couldn't create and scholars couldn't read -- I can't even imagine how many people died falling off a horse just because they were short-sighted. For civilisations to have access to devices that got them decades of productivity out of some of the most skilled people in their societies was massive. And that's part of how you get European dominance over Asia, because the Chinese economic powerhouses didn't care about glass as much as Europe did. It's not enough to just invent something. To develop a technology, a society needs both the resources to play with and the need to play with it. That's why we get so much advancement from war. You can thank Germany for your microwave.

How on earth is this relevant to the market or our climate crisis?

Glass will be invented, and then it will be forgotten, and then it will be invented again. But only some economies flourished from it.
We have no control over anything but us. And that's terrifying. The climate change that crippled the Bronze Age wasn't even their fault and they still got thrown back to the Dark Ages.
We are going to see our own change in the market. We are going to live it. And one thing is true, whether National or ACT or BP like it or not: fossil fuels cannot continue to be relied upon as a commodity. Not long-term. It's a dying industry, slowly but surely, and it'll die whether we manage to wean ourselves off petrol or whether we use it all up first.
To a lesser extent, this is true of other non-renewables too. We are not at critical mass yet with our lithium-ion batteries, but we're now at the stage where people in the third world all seem to have cellphones. This is not a sustainable practice for a limited metal we have to mine from the earth. When something is running out, we don't have to stop using that material in the things we build; if we start to use it all up, it will soon get too expensive to build with, and that will stop us.
And that's why we have to stop using it: because if you as a country or industry pour all your energy and resources into developing technology based off that now-scarce resource, you will be left with no usable technology when that resource runs out.

What are National doing?

This is a political sub, so I won't mince words: something's gone wrong with National. Something's always been wrong with ACT, but National's change is recent. Power has been centralised in the board and the candidate selection process is no longer in the hands of the rank and file after Steven Joyce's shakeup, instead dominated by corporate interests. And they have dominated. We have a cabinet of lobbyists, and not just on National's side of the board; Luxon has pulled together the whole industry.
When we attribute "intentions" to things like forces and political parties, it can be easy to forget there's not a concerted, rational mind at play behind their decisions, and their actions are influenced by all of the people and factors and forces that make them up. When I say, "National has been bought by lobbyists", I don't mean every single person in the party is a corporate shill. I just mean that there is enough corporate, business, and big-money influence in the party that they are no longer being governed primarily by their voter base or even their party members.
Nothing makes this more obvious than National's direction in politics. When your LABOUR and GREEN parties are the ones proposing to fix your climate crisis via free-market ingenuity that we can patent, sell on and capitalise off, something has gone wrong. There is money to be made in climate change, and National are off chasing oil down the bottom of a well.
If we don't wean ourselves off fossil fuels, we will find ourselves paying for it the increased price for them when we don't have the green technology to utilise at the end of supply. If we don't put our minds to green tech and science, we won't have the environment-saving and cleaning and reinforcing products and knowledge to sell on when the demand for them peaks through the ceiling -- instead we will be buying from other countries at big prices, paying to ship their experts here to tell us how to manage our estuaries or dump sites or skink habitats or whatever it is we need to fix next. New Zealand got lucky with our green energy; we were already using renewables by sheer coincidence when the climate crisis struck, and it made our transition to this new world very smooth. We will not be that lucky again.
Look at what we produce as a country. We held on far too long to our wool market out of some idea that it was "what we were supposed to be doing", and it nearly wrecked the country. Because it took us so long to change, and because we'd converted all our land into pasture, the most effective market for us to turn to became beef. Now that market is thriving, and we are willfully ignoring the real economic costs that will come with being a beef export country, and that cost is methane. There is not a future where countries will be allowed to emit methane for free. And there are no methane-light cows to switch to. Not until we develop them.
And this is what people talk about when they talk about environmental solutions still to be developed -- as if other people are going to develop them. That is incorrect. WE are the Cow Country. WE are the ones that should be foremost of the cow-fart field. If we do, we will be the ones benefitting by selling our bio-engineered cows and our science that made it happen. But if we don't, if we trail behind, we let other countries get out in front, and then our industry relies on them, and their industry outgrows us.
And these are all individual product or problem examples, but we are dragging our feet across the entire green industry. Why?

Big Oil does not care if your tech is Green

I say big oil, but there are other anti-environment and pro-corporate interests at play here. And again, there's not some big puppetmaster moving his pawn pieces, but there is influence, and companies don't want the world to go green, because when they do, they stop getting money for all the things they're getting money from right now. They don't care about the environment because they don't have the capacity to care; they are not a they. They are a force, a conglomeration, a hivemind of workers breaking their back for the company, until they clock off and become their own person again.
Their only interest is keeping ahold of their incredibly profitable market, and that market needs machines that use oil, and consumers willing to buy those machines, and people who aren't thinking about switching to a non-oil version of their tractor that doesn't exist yet (because no one has found the need to invent it. Or had the right resources.)
Oil cares about oil. Mining cares about mining. Tobacco cares about tobacco. Beef cares about beef. And we get value out of these industries as a country, as a society, so when they say"This thing is bad for me", we do have to listen to that. Otherwise we won't get our beef, or our oil. But "This thing is bad for ME" isn't the same as "This thing is bad for YOU". And companies are relying on consumers to not know the difference.

Back to National

Tobacco lobbyists have bought out Parliament, and are literally drafting our tobacco laws. And they are just one interest around the table. But they have had a huge effect. Imagine what's happening to the interests of your politicians when you have your lobbyists working together. Imagine where the interests of lobbyists for mining and oil might meet. Now imagine fisheries has a guy in there too.
Our oceans should be feeling very nervous right now.
It's the small influences we can't see that make these big decisions later on. The people who select our future MPs. The people who decide, hey, I'm going to try this new glass technique. But it takes an awful lot of decisions to make a glassblowing society.
A lot of what we do, we don't do consciously, like developing eye-glasses. But the benefit of our open democries, of our information-based societies, of our unprecedented understanding of economies and markets and science and climate, should mean that when we choose to do something consciously, we can do it.
When we don't, something has gone wrong.

A Green Future

To get to the sort of green economy the non-business parties are picturing, you need someone who has the time and acumen to get us there.
That SHOULD be National. There is so much involved in politics; our politicians are running so much. And they're spending most of their time undoing the last guy's policies. Labour's policies sound like the Greens. National doesn't have any except "win". ACT are doing Charter Schools again. And the policies being made are being made in the interests of business people.
Our politicians don't have visions like Hollyoake of a New Zealand forging our own future, or Muldoon's determination to make things better for the average kiwi, or (heaven help me), Roger Douglass's respect for politics. None of the old guard are happy with how politics is shaping up, and certainly not the right, or who eventually became the right, in Douglass's case -- this is what he had to say on the subject: ā€œJohn Key lived by the polls and itā€™s very dangerous. If you want to help people, you have to tell them the truth. The problem is that the politicians of today, they want to help themselves. So they poll in order to know what to say and itā€™s disgusting.ā€
I think in that one sentence, Douglass sums up everything wrong with the modern National Party. Once upon a time, National were in it to help people. They're not anymore.

Where to now?

It's all just markets.
If National won't change, they'll kill their market and they'll be replaced by a new party, just like the Liberal Party and Reform Party and Social Credit Party before them. National and Labour have always been around, but not always as these parties, or in these forms. The political spectrum will move to meet demand -- even when curtailed by corporate interests.
Or National will change, take control of their candidates and board, and live to fight for another century or so.
Either way, the economy will continue, and so will climate change. We will still need to develop new technologies using our available resources, and direct our technology-developing towards fixing environmental solutions. I hope New Zealand will benefit from this, and not just witness it. But if it's not National making the push, another political party will. We can see that happening right now, with the other parties suggesting their own green business ideas that National should be sweeping up votes for. There is voter and consumer demand for green businesses, and National are distracting us instead with shiny baubles because the corporations influencing them don't want you to see them.
Another thing Douglass was frustratingly right about: all our parties are doing at the moment is undoing each other's policies. It's hard to see New Zealand making any forwards progress at all if that's our direction.

2024.05.19 10:42 WhatAreReal Having learnt English for 8 years, i find a good way to learn English not just for examination.

Firstly,in the past several years,my English is always bad and i have no good ways to memorize so many words for reading an article and exam.So one night,i start to consider:How natives learn English? Why their baby can say various words and read many article? And in the end,i get the reason.(I'm from Taiwan,so i make examples about Chinese, but the method isn't just for Chinese.) Except for their parents often say words to him, they won't memorize many words at first. Yes,they just understand an approximation of a word. They don't recite any word precisely, which can improve their efficiency of reciting words and reading extremely. And with they growing, they can say and write words precisely. So...why not simulate their behaviors? So i try the method, like a baby native,i don't memorize the words precisely. I just memorize the approximation of words. And until now,i have practices the way for half a year, which benefits me a lot. I think it's a good way to learn English for reading. And if u can keep on my methods, like me for half year,u will find that with your again and again memorizing the approximation,u can write words precisely, just like a baby native. I share my method, which maybe help u.šŸ˜ƒ

I really want to confirm my understanding of V speeds is correct so Iā€™ve prepared some answers to the questions provided in Private Pilot: Oral Exam Guide by ASA. Any constructive feedback is welcome and appreciated! Thank you all in advance!
What is the stall speed in the normal landing configuration? In the normal landing configuration of most Cessna 172, Vs0 is at where the bottom of the white arc is on the airspeed indicator. When power on, this is the minimum speed which an aircraft can be flown in a steady straight-and-level motion with its flaps extended and landing gear down if available. Also, this is the power-off stall speed at the maximum landing weight with gear and flaps down.
What is the stall speed in the clean configuration? In the clean configuration of most Cessna 172, Vs1 is at where the bottom of the green arc is on the airspeed indicator. When power on, this is the minimum speed which the aircraft can be flown in a steady straight-and-level motion with its flaps up and landing gear up. Also, this is the power-off stall speed at the maximum takeoff weight with gear and flaps up.
What is the normal approach-to-land speed? For most aircraft, the rule of thumb is the normal approach speed is around 1.3 of Vs0. This is the speed for the final leg of the flight until the aircraft reaches the threshold crossing point.
What is maneuvering speed? Maneuvering speed (VA) is an airspeed limitation determined by the aircraft designer. At speeds exceeding VA, full deflection of any flight control surface can result in damage to the aircraft structure. The maneuvering speed varies under different circumstances due to varying load factors in different phases of flight. The one suggested in AFM/POH is for reference only.
What is red-line speed? The red-line speed is also known as the never-exceed speed (VNE). In no circumstances should an aircraft be flown beyond this speed or serious structural damage might be caused to the aircraft. What is the normal climb-out speed? If the climb gradient does not compromise the safety of the flight, the climb-out speed depends on the PICā€™s personal preference. Normally, Vy and Vx are the most common options.
Whatā€™s the normal takeoff speed? With correct wind information, density altitude, and gross weight, the normal climb-out speed can be obtained by using the calculation methods provided in the AFM/POH of the aircraft. If there is no such document in your possession before flight, you shouldnā€™t attempt to make a flight on the aircraft.
Whatā€™s the best rate-of-climb speed? When an aircraft travels at the best rate-of-climb speed (Vy), the aircraft gains the most altitude in the shortest period of time. The maximum thrust occurs at Vy. With an increase in altitude, Vy decreases gradually until it meets Vx at the absolute ceiling. In terms of vertical speed, the angle of climb decreases with altitude until it levels off at the absolute ceiling.
Whatā€™s the best angle-of-climb speed? When an aircraft travels at the best angle-of-climb speed (Vx), the aircraft gains the most altitude in the shortest horizontal distance. The maximum power occurs at Vx. With an increase in altitude, Vx increases gradually until it meets Vy at the absolute ceiling. In terms of vertical speed, the angle of climb decreases with altitude until it levels off at the absolute ceiling.
Whatā€™s the maximum flap extension speed? VFE is the upper speed limit that allows the flaps in the fully extended configuration in flight. For most Cessna 172, it is marked at the top of the white arc on the airspeed indicator.
Whatā€™s the maximum gear extension speed? VLE is the upper speed limit that allows the landing gear in the extended position in flight. If an aircraft is equipped with a retractable landing gear, this information can be obtained in the chapter of Performance and Limitations in the AFM/POH and is normally not marked on the airspeed indicator of a Cessna 172.
