2024.05.28 14:37 lovingsillies Book Review: Lost Souls, the published Pink Floyd fanfiction
Uj/ This review is going to be very earnest. Background, the author is a music journalist whose interviewed hundreds of musicians including Pink Floyd. This is his first shot at fiction, this book is self published, something that costs ~$4000 unless you do it on Amazon, but surprisingly I stumbled across it on the Canadian equivalent of Barnes and Noble's website. submitted by lovingsillies to PinkFloydCircleJerk [link] [comments] The book follows Edwin's self insert character, Matt, who happens to meet Roger, Rick, and Syd on a boat when they're all similar ages and the band was touring Piper. Roger invites him to that night's show and to meet them backstage, and thus begins a love story between Matt, who convenienly becomes a music journalist, and Pink Floyd's music. The back of the book is a little misleading, Matt becomes a music journalist who is assigned by his magazine to go on tour with Pink Floyd (at his request.) He doesn't just follow them around out of obsession LMAO. Only in the last quarter or so of the book is he commissioned by Roger to write a book. Enjoyably, the book sticks to Matt's friendships with the band members rather than straying into the character's personal life too much. But don't get me wrong, the author IS a good fiction writer, I felt transported to the world, and I did enjoy the character of Matt a lot. Even his internal monologue, but obviously the dialogue with the band members takes the cake. It's quite well done, Edwin cares about their voices as well as a music journalist should, the band members' are well characterized and "accurate" sounding. Edwin should know, he met them, and FUCK did he do the research. Seriously, solid 7 pages of references at the end of the book lmao. He cares about the band members being in "the right place at the right time" down to the day. He tastefully kept the interaction between the bandmates to a minimum, they banter a bit, but they're not all going out for brunch and having screaming matches, although he does go to brunch with Nick lol. Matt generally spends time with one at a time. I think it's only right that Edwin didn't take liberties with what they would've said to one another considering this hit the shelves to be bought. Roger and Nick get the spotlight, but David gets his due, Rick has almost no dialogue. I suspect this is because of the descending order of public presences, Roger being thoroughly interviewed, Nick having written his humourous, narration driven Pink Floyd memoir and being generally "what you see is what you get," David less-so, and Rick being the most private. The author (and main character) seem to have a soft spot for Roger, he's the most complex character, good humoured and self deprecating but still kind of a dick and ultimately brings upon his own downfall. It's interesting character development to see how he changes as a person, especially by the time he ousts Rick from the band the way he does. The author is unbiased in his depictions of them though and doesn't come across as a fanboy. And, I will note, Matt calls out Roger's hypocrisy in political views to his face near the end and Rog doesn't take it well. He lists very specific problematic things Roger has done, too. Things I didn't like: Too! Fucking! Short! Too much time spent in the wrong places. Piper to Echoes was 👌 but before you know it, Matt is seeing DSOTM live, and then quickly to The Wall which does get a fair amount of time, then Rog drama until Division Bell where David gets the airtime he deserves. (Polly is there at one point too lol!) I think Edwin time skips what could be narrative in favour of getting caught up in the journalism side closer to the end. Too much information given in paragraphs instead of Matt hangin out with the boys between Obscured By Clouds up to The Wall. That being said, I learned a LOT about the band's history from this book. Especially what turned The Wall into such a drama. Too much time spent in the wrong places, the last two decades. If you're going to write a fanfic, stick to the goods. Ultimately, I think Matt's separation from the band is realistic and not too sickly sweet. I felt that way in general, Edwin doesn't get too attached to parasociality through his self-insert. I think the book benefits and suffers from him being a successful music journalist. Keep in mind that there is a plethora of published Beatles fanfic that strays so, so far from reality. Overall, I would recommend this book, especially those who are particularly interested in the band's history. Don't go into it expecting it to be like a story on Ao3. However, I did smile through a lot of the scenes with the band members, there is a good amount of cheeky banter and good conversations, especially in the first third when Matt is more starstruck and the band hasn't made it too big yet. It's well written and an enjoyable ride, and the bittersweet ending even made me a tad emotional lmao. |

Reviews🔗Tactical Vest with Multiple Storage Options and Leg Platformhttps://preview.redd.it/8sdyoftod33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd802da76a4cad8971813cf1236720b3a743d3be I recently had the chance to try out the Barska Loaded Gear VX-100 Tactical Vest and Leg Platform, and I must say, it delivered a very satisfying experience. The first thing that stood out to me was the vest's ease of use. The ladder buckles on each side made it simple to adjust the fit to my preference, providing a custom feel that was essential for me. The web system made it easy to organize all of my essential items, and the various pouches offered a lot of convenience. However, there were a few areas that needed some improvement. The zipper closure on the vest felt a bit too tight at times, making it a bit difficult to open or close without tugging. Additionally, the magazine pouches could benefit from a more sturdy design, as their quick-release elastic pull-tabs sometimes felt a bit flimsy. Despite these minor setbacks, overall, I had a great experience with the Barska Loaded Gear VX-100 Tactical Vest and Leg Platform. It was comfortable, practical, and offered plenty of storage for my needs. I'm certain that this vest will be an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable and stylish tactical vest. 🔗Waterproof Oilskin Gun Holster Vesthttps://preview.redd.it/8lld818pd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f88b7f38edc29ed63a5db55256ea52741f50a54a I recently came across the Wyoming Traders Men's Oilskin Concealed Carry Vest, and it has become quite a staple in my daily life. This water-resistant vest, made from 12-ounce cotton canvas with oil and wax impregnated into it, has been a trusty companion in a variety of unfavorable weather conditions. One of the most impressive features of this vest is its ability to conceal a firearm, ensuring that I can remain protected at all times. The concealment pockets along with the convenient magazine holders make it easy to keep essential items at the ready. However, I did notice that it might be a bit too long for some taller individuals, so I suggest trying it on before making a purchase. Over all, I'm thoroughly satisfied with the quality, craftsmanship, and practicality of the Wyoming Traders Men's Oilskin Concealed Carry Vest. 🔗Premium Concealed Carry Vest for Everyday Carryhttps://preview.redd.it/x47my5kpd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a975c662c9c15a650d24062957e0c76f482bd2c A few weeks ago, I decided to give the Rothco Plainclothes Concealed Carry Vest a try during one of my outdoor trips. The moment I put it on, I was struck by how many pockets it had - over 20! It was like a treasure trove of organized space for all my gear. What stood out to me the most was the cotton/poly fabric that made up this vest. It was comfortable and seemed to breathe well, especially during the warmer days of my adventure. The large concealed carry pockets were a game changer, and even though it took a bit of adjusting to use them, they were definitely worth it. I felt confident that my gear was secure and within an arm's length. Now, there were a couple of things that could have been better. The adjustable waist tabs were not the easiest to manipulate, and I felt like I had to fiddle with them a bit to get the right fit. Additionally, some of the smaller pockets, like the ones on the right front chest, were a bit more difficult to access due to their location. All in all, I'm glad I gave the Rothco Plainclothes Concealed Carry Vest a try. It's a versatile and comfortable piece of gear that makes outdoor travels more practical and enjoyable. I'm definitely looking forward to using it on my next adventure. 🔗Comfortable Concealed Carry Vest with Breast Pocketshttps://preview.redd.it/nc4ax01qd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a02789c74e9371278ae78b491aa0efd18d73d4a As a gun enthusiast, I was intrigued by the Rothco Concealed Carry Backwoods Canvas Vest. I had heard about its discreet design, so I decided to give it a try. Upon first glance, it looked like a typical outdoor vest, but it boasted a few hidden features that made it stand out. The vest's large breast pockets were a game-changer for me, as they allowed me to carry extra ammo, snacks, or even my phone without drawing unwanted attention. The 100% cotton canvas outer shell was both comfortable and durable, perfect for everyday wear or outdoor adventures. However, the polyester interior's diamond quilted design was a bit heavier than expected, making it less suitable for warm weather. The 2-way zipper closure was sturdy and easy to use, but it could be a bit noisy at times, which might give away my presence if I needed to remain concealed. The ribbed collar added a stylish touch to the vest, but it was quite stiff, causing slight discomfort around my neck. Overall, the Rothco Concealed Carry Vest is a practical choice for those seeking a discreet way to carry a firearm while enjoying the great outdoors. 🔗Versatile Concealed Carry Vest with Customizable Holster Attachmenthttps://preview.redd.it/iw13sxxqd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8b1c420ee4e1bce3cc3dfc3e34f02e57a3b8288 As someone who often carries a concealed weapon, I found Rothco's Concealed Carry Soft Shell Vest to be a game-changer in my daily life. The first thing that stood out to me was the 100% polyester shell and fleece lining, making it both durable and comfortable to wear. The vest's 3-layer construction helped deflect wind, wick away moisture, and maintain warmth, perfect for those unpredictable weather conditions. While wearing the vest, I appreciated the two interior loop fields for concealed holster attachment. This feature allowed for easy and discreet carry, no matter which side I chose to wear the gun on. Additionally, the two magazine pouches with Velcro closures were ideal for quick access to ammunition. However, I did notice that the holsters were sold separately, which might catch some customers off-guard. One downside I encountered was the vest's size. Although it was labeled as XL, it seemed to run large and long, requiring me to order a smaller size for a proper fit. Another issue I noticed was the two Velcro patches for gun attachment, which did not provide a secure or comfortable fit for my weapon. Overall, Rothco's Concealed Carry Soft Shell Vest is a well-made and stylish option for those looking to carry a concealed weapon. While there are some minor drawbacks, the vest's durability, comfort, and ease of use make it a worthwhile investment for those seeking discretion and convenience in their everyday carry. 🔗Rothco Plainclothes Concealed Carry Vest: Ultimate Tactical Hideawayhttps://preview.redd.it/3vq1p8crd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5751257ed06ed78c4bc72c7b88bcb5375282e861 I recently tried out the Rothco Plainclothes Concealed Carry Vest and was thoroughly impressed by its features and quality. Not only is it made of lightweight and durable fabric, but it also boasts an impressive 20+ pockets designed for everyday carry and concealed carry. The 16 front pockets with zippers and hook & loop closures were particularly useful, as was the vented back with mesh lining that kept me cool during rigorous activities. One feature that stood out was the two large padded ambidextrous CCW pockets on the side of the vest, perfect for ensuring a comfortable concealment of your firearm. While I didn't personally need this feature, I could appreciate its utility for those who do. What's more, the interior of the vest had four easy-to-access mag pouches with secure hook and loop closures to store ammunition and small devices. Another great feature of the vest was its adjustable side waist tabs, which allowed for an optimal fit. Overall, I found the Rothco Plainclothes Concealed Carry Vest to be an excellent option for everyday tactical use, especially during outdoor trips and adventure. However, there were a couple of drawbacks I experienced as well. The size of the hand pockets was smaller than expected, and one reviewer mentioned difficulty with the zipper lining up, which could lead to issues with concealment. Overall, the Rothco Plainclothes Concealed Carry Vest is an excellent choice for those looking for a versatile and comfortable tactical vest for everyday carry purposes. Despite the minor drawbacks, it's sure to provide a great value. 🔗Lightweight Concealed Carry Vest by Cinchhttps://preview.redd.it/gpcm8gurd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7369a5d5807c0b21f9b0d307c16c313d53206d9a I've been testing out the Cinch Men's Concealed Carry Vest in my daily life, and I must say, it's been a comfortable addition to my wardrobe. The vest has a nice blend of polyester and wool that makes it lightweight yet cozy. One of my favorite features is the full zip front with a stand-up collar - it keeps me warm while I'm out and about. The elastic hem is a great touch, ensuring a snug fit around my waist. The two front hand warmer pockets come in handy when I'm carrying small items like my phone or sunglasses. The metal logo patch adds a bit of style to the vest, and I appreciate the blanket stripe lining for extra insulation. One of the most practical features of this vest is the concealed carry pocket. It's perfect for those who need a safe and discreet way to carry essential items. The color-blocked yokes and DWR finish make it both stylish and durable. However, there are a few things I'd like to point out. First, the vest may not be the best choice for colder weather, as it's designed to be lightweight. Additionally, while the blend of materials is comfortable, some may find it to be scratchy against their skin. Overall, the Cinch Men's Concealed Carry Vest is a great option for those looking for a lightweight, comfortable, and stylish vest. With features like the concealed carry pocket and color-blocked yokes, it's a standout choice in the category. 🔗Premium Lightweight Concealed Carry Vest for Warm Weatherhttps://preview.redd.it/nyjtz98sd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1cc46e0647718f87773f703fc1f58894e821f2b Recently, I had the pleasure of trying out the Wyoming Traders Men's Texas Concealed Carry Vest. As a reviewer, I found this vest to be quite impressive in several ways, while also having a couple of minor drawbacks. Firstly, the vest is made of a sturdy, top-quality cotton canvas with reinforced stitching throughout, giving it a premium feel. The front western front yoke shoulder design not only adds a distinct look to the vest, but it also makes it suitable for warm weather. This is why I appreciated this vest during these hot summer days. One issue I encountered was with the concealed carry holsters, as they had a somewhat limited range when it came to gun compatibility. I found that the holsters would work best for medium or compact-sized handguns and smaller magazines, which could be somewhat restrictive for those with larger firearms. Secondly, I discovered the vest to be quite comfortable, as it provides space for easy arm movement while still effectively concealing the carry. However, I did notice that the vest can be a bit on the bulky side, making it less suitable for certain activities or situations. Another feature that stood out to me was the multiple pockets available on the vest. The pockets are situated within strategic locations, such as one on the front near the holster and the extra deep zippered pocket on the inside. These pockets, while convenient, can also be a bit difficult to reach at times, especially when you're on the move. Finally, I would like to point out that the vests' snaps look attractive and provide a sense of security, but they do add some bulk to the overall vest, affecting the overall appearance. Overall, the Wyoming Traders Men's Texas Concealed Carry Vest is a solid investment for those looking for a high-quality, comfortable, and accessible vest for concealed carry. While there are a few minor drawbacks, the vest's overall functionality and quality make it worth considering, particularly for those interested in a more stylish and versatile option. 🔗Versatile Concealed Carry Vest with 10 Storage Pocketshttps://preview.redd.it/ixfxpqmsd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=335ee374789d65b41a5e8cbaf7654ece0fb08cbc When I first put on the Fox 65-551 M Viper Concealed Carry Vest, I was impressed by the smooth, comfortable lining. It felt like a dream on my skin! . But as I started loading up my daily essentials, I noticed that I needed more pockets than the 10 this vest offered. It's true that concealed pockets provide safety, but I thought there could be a little more room for the items I usually carry. The vest's heavy-duty 2-way zipper made it convenient to adjust, whether I was standing or sitting, which was a major plus. Overall, my experience has been a mix of pros and cons, but I'll keep wearing it, and I appreciate the protection and comfort it provides. 🔗Lightweight Concealed Carry Vest for Comfortable Securityhttps://preview.redd.it/evq3umzsd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9dba85e2615adc64c114e8081ffeab7756a2b6f3 I recently had the chance to try out the Ariat Men's Grizzly Concealed Carry Insulated Phantom Vest, and I must say, it's a real game-changer. The vest is made of a durable peached canvas shell with a cozy sherpa lining, perfect for those chilly days on the range. The 80gsm insulation ensures your body stays warm, while the hidden pockets offer a convenient way to keep your essentials secure. One feature that really stood out to me was the zipper closure. It sealed tightly, ensuring my gear stayed protected and easily accessible. Although the vest is machine-washable, it's always nice to have a reliable zipper to keep things tucked away. However, there were a couple of things that were a bit of a letdown. For one, the sizes seemed to run a bit larger than expected, so be sure to size up if you want a snug fit. Also, the vest is designed for right-handed people, so left-handed users may have to adjust the fit accordingly. Overall, I was impressed with the Ariat Men's Grizzly Concealed Carry Insulated Phantom Vest. Despite some minor inconveniences, it's a reliable and stylish choice for those looking to stay warm and secure on their outdoor adventures. 🔗Lightweight Concealed Carry Vest with Removable Back Protectorhttps://preview.redd.it/1vr6zjitd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60ca23135c2ff951b17904334c4c5861e4d11006 This Covert Tactical Vest by Scorpion Exo is a game-changer for avid riders. As someone who's tried a few options, this one really stands out. The abrasion-resistant 600D polyester main chassis with Cordura reinforced pockets is a huge bonus, offering durability and reliability. The concealed carry pockets, reinforced with holster-ready female hook and loop panels, give you the added security you need on the road. Plus, the Nightviz 360 reflective feature is perfect for those late night or early morning rides. I also appreciate the detachable high-density back protector, upgradeable to C. E. Level 2. The vest's wide variety of ready-access storage compartments and Molle Compatible Webbing make it incredibly convenient. However, some users pointed out that it's a bit tricky for smaller storage items like credit cards, since the pockets are designed for larger items like wallets. One of the downsides, as some reviewers mentioned, is the size. The sizing is generous and might be too large for some riders, especially if you intend to wear it over a bulky jacket. But overall, the ease of use and the stylish look of the vest make it a great addition to any rider's gear. It's definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a high-quality, lightweight concealed carry vest. 🔗Lightweight Concealed Carry Vest for Everyday Usehttps://preview.redd.it/157i71vtd33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6395557ec99c99a8f3d9456a202493d55a761ff7 Last week, I started wearing Rothco's Concealed Carry Soft Shell Black Vest daily. It's durable, lightweight, and breathable—perfect for every weather condition. The innovative 3-layer construction did its work by blocking wind, wicking away moisture, and retaining heat. However, the concealed holster attachment feature caused me some trouble—it seemed inadequate and required additional accessories, which added to the inconvenience. The vest was versatile, fitting both right-handed and left-handed individuals equally well. Its unisex design made it comfortable for everyone, and the four internal magazine pouches were compatible with all sizes. I found that the product was more of a concealed carry vest for men and women, rather than just one category. Despite its few drawbacks, the Concealed Carry Soft Shell Black Vest was an impressive piece of equipment. Its user-friendly design, versatility, and compatibility made it a valuable investment for any enthusiast looking for comfort in concealed carry. 🔗Comfortable Conceal Carry Vest for Womenhttps://preview.redd.it/3f7sfebud33d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01968ed91a5d5fc39b7395544aed61b933345a72 The Calamity Conceal Carry Canvas Vest by Wyoming Traders has been a game-changer for me. As a woman who values her fashion sense, I was initially hesitant about venturing into the world of concealed carry vests. However, this vest turned out to be the perfect combination of style, comfort, and functionality. The fit of this vest is incredible. It's both snug enough to keep everything tucked away while still being comfortable enough to wear all day. The sturdy canvas material provides a nice balance between durability and weight, making it perfect for both daily wear and outdoor adventures. The dual gun holsters and clip holders have been a lifesaver, ensuring my everyday essentials are always within reach yet hidden from sight. One of the standout features of this vest is its zipper quality. It's smooth, quiet, and secure, giving me peace of mind knowing my belongings are safe. The two-hand pockets are also a thoughtful addition, providing an extra layer of convenience. However, one drawback I discovered is that the vest does tend to show a slight silhouette of the holster when wearing lighter clothing. This isn't a deal-breaker for me, but it's something to consider if you're looking for complete invisibility. Overall, the Wyoming Traders Calamity Conceal Carry Canvas Vest has made a significant difference in my daily life. Its blend of style, comfort, and practicality has earned it a permanent spot in my wardrobe. Whether you're new to the concealed carry world or a seasoned pro, this vest is definitely worth a try.
