First time growing salvia from seed
These were older seeds so I sowed them pretty thick- can I separate as I uppot or do that later after they have recovered and are a bit bigger? Or don’t separate at all? I’d like to get them out of the cell so I can add it to my tray of starts for my MIL tomorrow if I could :)

What seeds / fruit are these?
These soft squishy seeds / fruit are on the ground and I can’t work out where they are coming from. They are not lilypillies but have a similar texture. Shady ornamental garden. Plants in the area include Erigeron, salvia, plectranthus etc.

I saved these seeds and now can't identify them. Native to Maryland. What are they??
I saved these 2 years ago in an unmarked bag in my box of seeds I collected from my garden but they don't look anything like my garden plants (coneflower, milkweed, salvia, lupine) and google can't seem to identify them. Starting to look like pinecone seeds to me... Help!

2024.05.02 13:58 somethingfox Opinions please!

I have a big backyard that I want to stop mowing & start cultivating more natives in. Right now it is a hodge podge of invasives & native volunteers.
City of Atlanta / zone 6b, variety of sun exposure throughout yard.
The bads:
-Probably about 1/4 to 1/3 of it is covered in liriope spirata (the bad one). I’m trying to decide how much to fight back / accept its presence in my life. Tearing it all out would be an incredible amount of work. Thinking about weeding its edges to keep it from spreading further.
I’m almost done ripping out all of the winter creeper. I’ve prioritized weeding out this one because it hurts to walk on and it’s so aggressive.
Other invasives: Japanese stilt grass Vinca minor Pokeweed Brome grass
For the goods:
Another 1/4 of the yard is covered in Dutch clover & pink flowering wood sorrel. So pretty.
Natives/ volunteers include: Carolina wild petunia Black seed plantain Sweet autumn clematis Wild violet Liriope Muscari (the okay kind) Sedge grass (unsure exact kind)
I’ve planted a few of the following each (found on sale or gifted from neighbors) : American hazelnut Elephant ears Pink evening primrose Hostas Cardinal flower Dead nettle Lavender Salvia Cone flowers Cannas Dianthus
Any suggestions on what to prioritize and what else to plant?

What is my Lyreleaf Sage doing?
My Salvia lyrata was planted last fall as a 1 gallon. This spring it bloomed as expected and reached 1-2 feet tall, but then it kept growing…now it’s 5-6ft tall with this massive stalk of (seeds?). Does anyone know what is happening? I cannot find a picture anywhere that shows lyreleaf sage doing this. Thanks! SC, zone 9.

2024.04.22 19:41 Aard_Bewoner Just finished raking the first cut of the year!

Just finished raking the first cut of the year!
Lowland hay meadow restoration in progress. We started from an interesting already established, but degraded grassland. Some of the typically associated species were missing so I source seeds from wild plants, most of them within the floodplains of my local river. Human seed dispersal basically. All introduced species, except for most of the trees and shrubs, are associates of the Arrhenatherion grasslands.
First cut is early, I know, but it was cut in early fall last year, and I want to see how the vegetation reacts. The end of the year turned out to be very mild, growth persisted well into the winter. With it being so long and battered by rains, a layer of thatch was building up, so it had to go. Thatch makes scything more difficult and it isn't good for seedling germination, so I gave this area an early cut. It can grow untill late fall when it will be cut for the last time this year.
We're seeing some introduced species like Centaurea jacea and Pimpinella saxifraga distribute themselves throughout the area. Introduced little seedlings of Salvia pratensis, Anthyllis vulneraria and Succissa pratensis this year. I'm excited for what's to come!

2024.04.16 16:37 elbinray Too early to plant indoors for fall transplant?

Hi all I'm new to this and excited and don't want to wait until fall to start growing and sticker shock at the nursery got me thinking about seeds. I bought a bunch for the plants I want to grow with the plan to start them indoors now and transplant in the fall.
I'm having second thoughts though. Is it a bad idea to start them indoors now? Is it better to just wait until fall and sow the seeds directly in the yard?

2024.04.14 13:05 idkwhyimhere777 Can anyone tell me if this moisturizer is good to buffer with?

Im using the Real Barrier Extreme Creme and I’m not sure if its okay to use as a buffer, or if its too occlusive due to all the different oils in the formulation. I buffered with the Cosrx snail mucin the first time and I don’t think it was enough.

2024.04.14 04:17 MrWhite337 Nursery quality plants in my home greenhouse…how to?

Nursery quality plants in my home greenhouse…how to?
I’ve started many seeds this winter and am wondering how I get big nursery type plants at home? I started most of the seeds according to specs i.e. X weeks from last frost date, but my plants aren’t nearly as big as the ones at the nurseries. A couple standouts however are this salvia (pictured) and some echinacea I started from seed in December. As you can see the salvia is flowering and much bigger (pic taken just after planting) than the ones I harvested seed from last fall. Do I just need to start them much earlier? Any tips or tricks to getting big healthy starts ready to plant come spring?

Salvia Caradonna has Died, worth another go?
Planted a year ago, beautiful until August when it seemed to get ravaged by some pests.
I was advised to cut it right back and wait for next spring which I did but it hasn't come back.
Is it worth getting another in the same spot or will the same thing happen again?
It is in a sunny border and was the stacentrepiece. The only other thing is that I am not sure my soil is that well draining. I heard if I mix wood chip into the soil when I plant it this can help. Is that true, any other advice to make the soil better draining.
If it is inadvisable to simply replace what is similar but more likely to survive? I guess Lavender but tried that before in pots and it was a real pale purple. I want deep purple, elegant looking.
Thanks

2024.04.12 05:41 Specific-Move-8768 Sunflower Husks

I have a beautiful large Salvia Limelight that I planted 10+ years ago and that has done spectacularly well. Last year I put a bird feeder, which I fill with black oil sunflower seeds, very near it (I wanted to provide the birds some cover from a neighbor cat. The feeder has been filled continuously during this time.
The leaves of the salvia are turning purple and parts of the plant seem to be dying. Could it be caused by the sunflower husks? Or maybe just age? I know the husks are toxic to some plants, but not sure if salvias are on that list.

Weird barcode in Sephora faves hair care box
I got my rouge purchase in the mail today and one of the items was the Sephora faves Your Clean Haircare Besties. Super exciting but when I was looking at the Dae 3 in 1 styling cream the barcode was completely blacked out in sharpie. Is this something to be concerned about? It just looks so bizarre and nothing else has them crossed out. Was it so I can’t return it? Just bizarre to me. Thanks x

2024.04.07 19:44 Prestigious_Salad687 Salvia caradonna and echinacea query

I planted some salvia caradonnas and echinacea in September last year. There is bark mulch all around them.
I cut all of the dead growth back in early March, looking at them now 3 of 6 echinaceas already have a good amount of growth and 4/5 leaves, 1 has a tiny bit of growth, one I can’t see any growth on and the other I can’t remember or see where it’s planted (hidden by the mulch?)
The salvias on 2 of them I can see very light green moss-esque growth at the bottom so I know they’re alive but the others I can’t yet see any growth on at all.
For reference I’m in the south and all plants are in full sun beds.
Thank you!

2024.04.07 12:00 YourDreamGirll Blueberries companion: Would Salvia Nemorosa work?

Blueberries companion: Would Salvia Nemorosa work?
New here, hello!👋
I'm making plans for my raised bed. I have some young blueberries going in from some unloved pots- they're small and rather spindley so I'm hoping they'll be happier in a bigger bed and will grow into actual bushes. (Don't worry, they'll have the bed filled with ericaceous)
I've been reading up on companion plants. I like the sound of sage and thyme, for their scent, and also to help prevent weeds with some ground cover.
On the note of sage, I'm under the impression that it ought to be culinary sage (officialinis) but would a salvia such as Nemorosa work in the same companion manner? Or would it get in the way of the bluebs because of the flower height.
Any advice gratefully received!
Thank you. 🌱🪻🫐
P.s excuse the mess of weeds, it's this year's job to sort it out. Work in progress!
