Mamamatay muna yata ako bago ako dalhin sa ER

2024.05.13 10:52 takingthebackstreets Mamamatay muna yata ako bago ako dalhin sa ER

TL;DR: I (20F) have gallstones tapos meron din yung nanay ko non 2 years ago but recovered non-surgically dahil wala kaming pera pampa-opera. Hindi ako gumagaling with the same treatment (flushing method) and I initially wanted to have my gallbladder surgically removed pero ayaw nila. I'm showing serious symptoms pero dinidismiss nila, kesyo mahina yung loob ko.
Here goes the entire story:
I'm 20F diagnosed with cholelithiasis (gallstones) since January this year. I started showing symptoms nung December pa, with blood in my stool. Even then ang hirap i-bring up sa parents ko na kailangan kong magpatingin. I had to secure money by myself (I proposed half-half sa expenses kasi wala talaga akong work as a student). A week after taking meds for ulcer, I went for an abdominal ultrasound and it showed na may bato sa apdo ko (2.5 cm) at distended na yung gallbladder ko. It might be a separate case kaso mas nagfocus yung mga doktor ko sa gallstones. I already told them about my suspicions na baka naging factor yung PPI na ininom ko for ulcer sa pagkabuo ng gallstones ko, plus yung chronic stress and genes ko. Dapat ba nagpa-endoscopy ako even without my doctor's order?
Anyway, 5 months na akong naghihintay for surgery. My symptoms are becoming steadily worse. Nung first few months mas manageable yung symptoms: occasional abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, vomiting, constipation-diarrhea intervals, lethargy, saka intolerance sa fatty foods. The worst pain I ever had in my life. Feel ko naman justified yung exaggeration ko kasi di ako makaunat sa sakit saka di siya napapawi ng painkillers at hot compress. Namamalipit talaga ako sakit na I would rather pass out than to be awake for the attack.
As her daughter, my heart broke seeing her sick like that, even more ngayon na iniinda ko rin yung sakit na meron siya noon. As much as I want to be assured by her success story, hindi ko magawa dahil mas malaki yung akin saka magkaiba kami ng katawan.
I thought it was good na merong isa sa pamilya namin na nakakaintindi ng sakit ko (more on this later). Pinag-flushing nila ako from March to April. I gave it a go kasi baka gumaling din ako albeit slim chance lang.
The worst I had kasi di na siya bearable. More frequent yung mga atake ngayong week.
I saw their pained looks pero nagphone pa rin sila.
Mas matindi pa raw yung naranasan niya kaysa sakin. Para bang ano, wala na akong choice but to suck it up kasi wala pa ako sa pinakamalala gaya niya. Wala pa akong trabaho at nag-aaral pa ako.

2024.04.25 00:41 SapphireWellbeing My candida protocol

This is not intended to be medical advice, this is me sharing my journey and how I came to some major conclusions about what caused such a severe systemic candida overgrowth, because reading other people’s experiences helped me discover this.
I’ll leave some info on what I actually eat in a day - finding out what to eat was the HARDEST part of this so I want to leave some hope.
This is not forever, but we need to give our bodies the best shot at healing.
Before you start ANY candida killing protocol - I would make sure of the following:
  1. Passing stool at least once a day
  2. Urinating regularly
  3. Sweating regularly in controlled scenarios and able to wash the sweat OFF after
  4. Magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) baths regularly to detox through skin
  5. Consuming zero gluten
  6. Zero refined grains - rice, oats etc.
  7. Consuming zero dairy for a month
  8. Increase fibre: leafy greens, avoid excess dark leafy greens as they’re high in oxalates
  9. Supporting the liver with herbal teas: dandelion root, milk thistle seed, calendula, peppermint, fennel
  10. Zero seed oils: use avocado, olive or coconut
  11. Zero processed food for the first two weeks - a month other than occasional peanut butter / almond butter, almond milk and coconut milk.
  12. Check all products if they contain tapioca starch / maltodextrin - this raises your blood sugar.
  13. Avoid protein powder, this raises your insulin resistance (while it might not raise glucose, it does contribute to insulin instability)
  14. No fruit for the first two weeks - slowly reintroduce low carb fruit like blueberries, blackcurrants, blackberry
  15. Reduce toxic load: Aluminum from cookware; fragrances; harsh cleaning chemicals; soaps and beauty products; oxalates - spinach; phytic acid - nuts and seeds that haven’t been activated; lectins - legumes. A normal healthy person will have no issue digesting and breaking these down - you will. Your liver is already working so hard, take some pressure off.
  16. Find a way to regulate your nervous system EVERY DAY: vagal nerve exercises, somatic exercise, walking with intention, go to the beach, ground your feet in the earth, hug a tree, listen to bird song, breathing exercises, yoga, qigong, taichi, tapping, something.
  17. Limit phone usage after sunset, switch to orange warm lighting after sunset.
  18. Get outside, sun on your face as early in the morning as you can for at least 15 minutes, no sunglasses
  19. Oil pulling daily first thing in the morning - if oral candida is present this habit is absolutely necessary
  20. Consider supplementing Vitamin D3 + K2, up to 3000 IU per day
  21. If you’re still working, consider reducing your hours or taking some time off. I know money is important, but so is your health. How are you going to earn sustainably if you’re constantly taking time off for illness?
  22. Consider finding a local naturopathic or functional medicine doctor - I wish I had done this earlier.
If you are experiencing strong herx reactions, STOP any antifungals or even herbal supplements for 1-2 months because your detox pathways are NOT open and flowing - so all the toxicity from the dead and alive candida is getting stuck in your system.
Focus on detoxification, and getting the same active ingredients in your diet and herbal tea instead! Garlic, ginger, oregano, thyme - that doesn’t sound like a good tea but it slaps as seasoning for chicken meat stock. Caprylic acid is found in coconut oil!
Why are the candida here? This took me ages to figure out… Adrenal fatigue, a struggling immune system and trouble eliminating waste.
  1. SSRIs, ADHD medication all raise blood sugar and lead to adrenal fatigue
  2. Excessive use of antihistamines and topical steroids suppress the immune system and lead to adrenal fatigue
  3. High carb, high processed diet lead to uncontrolled blood sugar, insulin resistance
  4. Dysregulated nervous system leads to prolonged stress, leads to nutrient deficiency over time
  5. Poor detoxification pathways due to lifestyle mentioned above, also a potential genetic component of MTHFR genes - not confirmed as I’m waiting on testing but I observe poor detoxification in all family members on my mother’s side.
  6. Poor immune system function due to lifestyle mentioned above, lymph nodes were hard and backed up
  7. Struggling liver despite not consuming alcohol, it was overloaded with detoxification requirements, my eyes started to turn yellow
  8. Gut dysbiosis. I had far too many antibiotics in my life. I have discovered herbal and extract remedies that can get rid of incoming strep throat. Support the immune system and detox pathways, rest, and your body will do the work.
  9. Mercury and aluminum, I found through HTMA testing my body was eliminating some heavy metals. I switched to stainless steel cookware, aluminum free deodorant. I don’t even use deodorant most days now.
  10. Issue with methylation due to lifestyle mentioned above, potential genetic component. Changing your diet and lifestyle can support proper methylation of chemicals in your body, I achieved this naturally with melatonin regulation! I don’t need to take it anymore.
Testing I had done:
Why no testing for candida?
It’s hard to test for, it’s expensive. I didn’t need a test. I’d had yeast infections for years. It was in my vagina, the corners of my mouth, my hand, my toe, my gut. I had such an intense craving for sugar and carbs, partly due to insulin resistance, but I would get very moody and upset without them. This is the candida screaming, not you, you have to have the willpower to go low carb for 2 weeks to get through this. I don’t crave or miss refined carbohydrates anymore... okay I get a little when I'm on my third 'kill protocol' day (at end of post).
How did I know it's not SIBO or something else? After I nailed the diet for two weeks, cut out refined and starchy carbohydrates - any bloating I had went away. It was never that bad in the first place for me personally.
What did I eat in my elimination period?
What do I eat now?
Where’s your fermented food and cabbage?!
Probiotics:
The kill protocol:
THIS IS A SLOW BURN. If you come in hot and heavy trying to kill every last one of these suckers you will be the sucker. You can’t eradicate all candida, we actually need some for digestion, we’re just trying to remove the overgrowth and encourage a more diverse microbiome through diet.
Why no NAC:
I'm a slow detoxer, slow methylator, adrenal fatigue, slow liver, my body doesn't have the strength or resources to handle how strong NAC can be.
Emergency detox:

2024.03.15 18:28 rjselzler Gutcheck Needed: Thinking of moving from GenED Teacher/Admin to Special Education Director

Question: How reasonable is it to do well as a SPED Director (online school) having served the majority of my career in a GenED (also online) classroom? Have any of you made that transition and how has it worked?
Context: I'm a mid-career educator who has been working as an admin (teacher supervision) for the past year. For the previous 12 years, I was in the online classroom (English and technology/iPads). I want to stay completely in online and have no desire to work brick and mortar (like ever--you guys are both so admirable and nuts at the same time!). I have also gained a huge amount of appreciation for good SPED professionals and what they can bring to benefit students. My only SPED experience is pre-certification, where I served as an ESY para for a middle school; it was definitely in my wheelhouse (I was a CNA for a decade before teaching) but was told by all people (including the SPED teacher) NOT to pursue SPED because it is a burnout field, so I happily secured an English/Speech secondary cert and loved teaching that in an online context. It may help to know that my school is online at the state level and only uses the documentation from the LEA; we are more of a course provider than a school, you could say. That said, we obviously honor all accommodations that students are entitled to.
My Rationale: I became a principal to support teachers. I think I've done well in that role and my school actually allows me to do that. Our absolutely legendary SPED director is getting older and likely to retire in the next 5 years. We have no one organizationally who is likely to step into that role easily and I can pretty easily add a SPED director endorsement to my admin cert (Idaho). I want to learn more about how to best support students with exceptional needs so I'm going to do the work and earn the endorsement regardless, but this is more of a question as to whether I should set my sights on a SPED Director role or just be a happy cheerleader as a principal (I think I could find value to bring to staff and students in either role). Most of our SPED Director's (technically a consultant) work is translating documented accommodations and adaptations to the online world so our teachers can provide them appropriately. I think I'd enjoy that!
My Concerns: I want to do it, but I worry that I'll be disservicing students and teachers. The legal aspects of SPED are scarier than other admin things, but I trust the SPED Director coursework and internship will allow me to gain practical expertise there (correct me if I'm wrong, please).
Thanks in advance! If you have good resources to share for district-level SPED best practices, please let me know.

2024.02.11 16:50 One-Cartoonist-6499 bading na naging straight ft main character na ate chona sa work (long post & grammar mistakes)

Hello. I, 25/F, works in a hospital as a RMT. Share ko lang kwento ko here cos I never did defend myself IRL.
Among my co-workers, there's this group of friends na "cool kids from college" trope na lowkey bullies. Like sila yung almost always nag-uupdate with the ganaps of their vvv active social life verbally and thru socmed (not that this is bad, don't get me wrong). Ngayon, one of those people is a decent 27/M who's really not like them. I've never heard him participate in any of their bashing streak at work, surprisingly hindi rin siya misogynist. This guy used to date a co-worker from the same group, she's 23/F and in the middle of a sticky situation with her ex/future ex, she's not sure and neither is he. Whenever he confirms their status, si ate chona lagi siyang iwas but drops hints na they're onto something serious. Kaya lang tong si ate, she still goes out with her ex, spends the night with him ganon, sometimes pag magkasama sila yung name ni 27/M sa imsg pinapalitan niya ng name ng iba namin kawork na female just so hindi magduda yung ex niya na may iba siyang guy na kausap. After 3 months, nag-confirm si ate mo kay 27/M na legit no chance na, friends na lang daw sila. Edi go lang si 27/M if ganon talaga. So after nun, nothing changed with the way na makihalubilo si ate kay 27/M. Soon enough, si 27/M nagmeet/chat na ng other girls and whenever nalalaman ni ate na ganon, she will throw a fit, para siyang magtatantrums in a passive aggressive manner na nakakafrustrate cos gusto niya isipin ni 27/M na hindi siya happy that he's giving other girls his time without directly saying it. Even sa work, kita mo na para silang ewan ganon. Kapag cnoconfirm ni 27/M yung situation lalo lang nagiging passive aggresive si ate niyo. Tapos maya-maya this ate girl will ask 27/M for advices regarding her ex cos they're trying to get back together.
After several months, 27/M randomly asked me if I can accompany him sa isang convenience store near our residence, I asked first if he isn't seeing someone, sabi niya wala. I reconfirmed by mentioning ate girl, and he said that they were long gone. Ayoko ng issues na ganon so when the coast was clear I said oks lang lumabas if I'm still awake by the time na mag-out siya. Kaya lang I fell asleep already, so hindi natuloy. We joked about it a few times and never once thought na may halong landian cos I'm bisexual and I prefer girls more than I prefer men. I was so comfortable hanging out with single guys cos I'm not really interested in them romatically, I was only in it for the company.
Fast forward to approximately 2mos after that, her mom was hospitalized and it so happen na I was always on night duty that cut-off, kaya sometimes magka-chat kami late night mostly about how frustrating our job is + memes. When her mom was discharged, he invited me to join him magtake out sa KFC. I was really bored that time so I joined him. Surprisingly, I enjoyed his company (outside work). We got to talk about our hobbies, what coffee do we like, what meme page serves the best memes, and what appears on out tiktok fyp. Before we parted, he said na we should go out again sometime when we're off duty.
Since that night, we had more consistent chats and hang-outs, I prefer using telegram (we can share movies hereee and pdfs for books) over messenger so that's where we mostly talk. This went on, and we decided that we're on the "dating" stage. One night, the cool kids had a party and ate girl saw the notif on 27/M's phone. It was me. I sent him a meme reax on tg. SO, AS USUAL, THIS GIRL THREW A FIT.
The following day, we are the talk of the lab. Apparently, ate girl was complaining to everyone at work that "She's kawawa" because we dated behind her back when everyone knows that they were also dating. She called me names, and her friends were supporting her act not knowing that she messed with her ex and 27/M. She was like "Paano naman ako? Kawawa naman ako, mukha akong tanga". Whenever she was asked about her past with 27/M and why she's acting up when clearly, they're not into a relationship, she will always come up with an answer that is childish such as "Kami pa rin, hindi naman natapos. Hindi lang ako magaling mag-express ng feelings ko. Alam niyo yan." and many other bullshit. One time, she even told me "Magaling ka sa work natin, ignore mo lang sinasabi ng iba", when really I don't hear rumors about me just yet. I cannot believe the entire situation but a mole from their group sent me the screenshots of their chats (different ppl from their circle, through PM and GC).
To be honest, this made an impact on my work life, many of my co-workers were calling me names, making up stories, rolling their eyes, they cannot even communicate properly with me even if it involves work. Which I didn't like of course, I am very serious about work and I behave professionally. So basically, she made everyone believe her story (that she intentionally cut and altered so she appears to be the victim). I confronted her about it, I let her talk without explaining what we've done cos I believe that we don't owe her an explanation. Everyday, me and 27/M debunks all of their claims (their cos pati yung tropa nakikisali), and at the end of the day we only laugh about it despite the weight it had on us during that time cos they look like fools to us. We went on, together, despite all the unsolicited opinions from the cool kids that we shouldn't be (the audacity). 27/M stopped being friends with them, he was so disappointed with what kind of people his so called friends turned out to be.
The only fear I had left that time was the possibility that they'll treat my work friends as terrible as they were treating me. It was inevitable, given their high school mindset. I apologized to my friends but they were okay with it. They told me that it wasn't a me problem, it's not my fault that their mindset didn't change since high school. I am more than grateful that I found such friends.
Even during her looooong tantrum, she kept on asking 27/M about her ex again. Even when she revealed publicly that she and her ex got back together, she and her friends were still on with their pa-victim act. Can u believe it, even the friends "cannot forgive me" and we're "offended" cos me, dating their friend was immoral daw HAHAHAHA.
Some days I didn't want to report to work. I cry in the parking lot minutes before timing in, I cry alone in the comfort room or randomly before I sleep. I only breakdown when I'm alone or whenever I'm with 27/M. I didn't want to show other people that they were capable of hurting me, I didn't want to give them that satisfaction. It went on. Until I decided to resign, and tell them different answers whenever they ask me where I was hired. (I want them out of my hair)
I never felt the need to defend myself, 27/M tried but it didn't go through. Talking is pointless when they already have a narrative that they made in their heads. Para kang kumausap ng pader, it's a waste of breath. I am only posting this as a testament, or proof that sometime in the past, I went through those things and during that time, I felt a lot of emotions. There were negats emotions but there was more positive energy. I had a great support system, I had real friends who defended me in rooms I am not in, and I have a boyfriend that reassures me whenever I have doubts (minsan kahit nga walang doubts? trip niya lang ako ireassure) about my capabilities, my appearance (lmao rumors about my nose, retoke daw + my skin, gluta lang naman daw. Even my clothes lagi nila tinatawanan but I know that I am beautiful kaya eme lang. Thanks sa father ko for my genes and sa mom ko kaya fair skin ko kahit magbabad ako sa araw. Not that I am saying na hindi nice maging morena, gluta, plastic surgery; ang hindi nice is yung act nila of reflecting their insecurities sa akin)
It'll be our anniversary soon and I'm so glad we powered through. He may seem like a red flag in the beginning but god, he's a man written by a woman. To my friends, thank you so much. I hope the universe will give and is giving you the same support you have given me. (p! "Slut!" (From the Vault by Taylor Swift)

The fact that I no longer had to hide my relationship with Vani from Janji felt liberating. We went to sleep without having to pretend that nothing happened between me and Vani.
Janji confided to us that he relied on anti-aphrodisiacs. With what he suffered, he needed some time before he could deal with his biological imperative. Whatever he went through in that living hell made him reluctant to touch. Despite this, I can sense a deeper part of him that yearned for it.
So I woke up finding myself trapped under the weight of two venlils.
Under the dim light of the room, I looked at the close-up features of the two xenos. In the course of our sleep, they had found my chest as a pillow replacement. Janji's features looked "rougher" than Vani's. I wondered if it came as a result of his captivity, or if he had always looked like that.
Not wanting to wake them up. I reached toward the bedside table for my glasses. As soon as I placed it around my eyes, the device sprung to life. The HUD popped up at the edges of my vision and one thing in particular caught my attention. Pasak had messaged me when we were sleeping. I navigated through the inbox with subtle eye movements and blinks. The synth's message stood out because it came from their direct personal address. Compare that to when I first received a message from the Society of Venlil Null Exploration on behalf of Pasak.
With a few more micro gestures, the message expanded before my eyes.
"Hi Johan!
I've been learning about Earth's archeology and realized we can not have our sole focus on site 108. I have deployed my machines across Venlil Null to explore more. I aim to uncover something like your Rashid Stele. I hope that the civilizations in Venlil Null have become cosmopolitan enough to collaborate or colonize each other.
I also wish we could find more than sites and writings. Do you think we can find remnants of Venlil Null's inhabitants too?
I will keep you posted on any discoveries.
See ya!"
As I contemplated Pasak's message, a gentle rustling brought me back to the present. The two venlils once nestled in sleep's embrace, began to stir.
"," I murmured in Ventongue, the closest phrase to "Good Morning."
Janji's eyes fluttered open first, adjusting to the light. It took him a moment to orient himself. His gaze focused as he realized his position, snout resting against my chest. A look of surprise washed over him as he retreated.
"Sorry... I didn't mean to..." he stammered, his eyes flicking away to the curtained window. "I had a... dream. Yeah, just a dream."
"Are you sure you had just a dream, nothing more?" I suggested.
Janji glanced back at me, then at Vani, who remained draped over me. Vani too had begun to wake up. Without having to share, he monopolized my body and climbed up. The scarred Venlil examined us.
"Wait... I... I did it didn't I?" he murmured, more to himself than to us.
Vani joined the conversation. "If by 'it' you mean asking Johan out for a date, that happened in real life."
A look of bewilderment crossed Janji's face as he processed this new reality. "Oh..." he whispered, his eyes darting between Vani and me. "So, are we... all in a relationship now?"
"Only if you still want that," I assured. He could have a second thought to the arrangement. Either way, the decision falls on him and him alone.
Janji seemed to grapple with his thoughts for a moment. His ears flicked just a tiny bit, but I could sense it as an affirmation. "I... yeah. I still want that."
Vani rolled away from me and propped himself up on the bed. He looked over at Janji. "Do you want a turn in the hugging machine?" he asked.
Janji's gaze lingered on me, a human wrapped in the simplicity of a sarong.
"I can... get that?" he asked "A hug I mean."
"Sure..." I opened my arms. "You can always have a hug."
The ensuing moment reminded me of Janji's first hug with Vani back at the spaceport. The process went more awkwardly than it should have. The tan venlil maneuvered himself atop me, his movements were hesitant. When I clasped my arm to enclose him, his body tensed rigidly.
As he began to tremble above me, I felt a pang of concern. "Are... you alright?" I whispered.
"N... no, this-" Janji's words faltered as he struggled to free himself from the embrace. I let go, giving him the space he needed.
"I'm sorry." He said. "I don't think I could have a hug like that right now. All this just reminded me of..." His voice trailed off.
"Hey, hey, you have nothing to apologize for," I reassured him. I placed my hand on his paw. To my relief, he didn't withdraw it. "On your own time, okay?"
As we settled into a moment of reflective silence, my stomach announced its presence by rumbling. Vani patted my stomach. "The hugging machine hungers for a meal," he declared.
Our "breakfast" or first meal took place in the town square. In this same spot, we once witnessed a PSA comparing the lives of venlils in captivity to those in correctional facilities. Today, the atmosphere felt no less tense. The news playing on the large screen overshadowed everything. It broadcasted updates about the siege of Mileau, where the kolshians had begun the invasion of the squirrel xenos' homeworld.
Janji's voice cut through the noise. "Are we... safe?" He asked as he picked at his meal. It resembled cap cai at first glance. Upon closer inspection, none of the ingredients looked familiar to any earth cuisine I know.
"We will find safety here," Vani responded. He glanced towards me in what looked like a plea for confirmation. "The humans have provided us with the necessary defenses."
"Yeah." I chimed in. "A significant part of what we've excavated from Venlil Null went to the creation of automated defense systems." I paused, reflecting on the recent findings. "The discoveries in sector 108 haven't affected that."
I have a feeling, however, that Pasak's deeper excavations in other sectors might cause future complications.
We continued to watch the news, absorbed in the unfolding crisis. The United Nations had dispatched warships to break the siege, but it would take time. The uncertainty of what the frog xenos had planned for the besieged dossurs hung in the air.
"If that still concerns you. I think Earth and the solar system would have an even thicker layer of defense." Vani said. "Janji, would you like to visit Earth?"
Janji's response was immediate and decisive. "Yes." He looked right between me and Vani. "When will we go to Earth?"
"Well..." I pondered his question for a moment. "I plan to go back after the new year. Which will take place about three weeks from now. Does that translate?"
"Yeah, five shifts," he replied.
"I heard we'll have a fireworks show on Venlil Prime's night side," I mentioned. "I would like to see what it looked like here on this planet."
"Is that the act where humans mimic flamethrowers with their mouths?" Vani asked. "How could our government even allow that act to proceed here?"
I chuckled at his confusion. "What... no, that's fire breathing. Fireworks don't-".
"How in the stars do you breathe fire?" Janji interrupted.
So over our meal, we went into a deep dive into some of Earth's spicier cultural practices. As I detailed the concepts of fire breathing and fireworks to Janji, his fascination with them grew. I played videos on my device, showing him the fiery breath of performers and the brilliant explosion of colors in the night sky.
Janji pondered over his empty bowl. "So you spray fuel from your mouth past a torch because it looks... exciting?" He queried.
"Yeah," I confirmed.
"And you shoot explosives into the sky to create beautiful patterns?" he continued, his tone still laced with disbelief.
"Also... yeah," I replied, noting the strangeness of these customs when explained outright.
Vani chimed in. "While humans don't eat people, some aspects of their culture might appear violent to outsiders."
"Hey-" I started to protest, but my venlil continued.
"I suspect this has more to do with the lack of Federation influence," he mused. "The Yotul, having endured decades under them, seem to resonate more with humans. Their cultural exchange programs have more success than ours."
"Huh..." I pondered his perspective. "How were the venlils before first contact?"
"Historical records depict our ancestors as meek, peace-loving beings who avoided conflict but-" Vani stopped.
"But about your concern," Vani looked toward Janji, "I have spent time on Earth, and no harm came upon me."
Janji's eyes lit up. "I see... Maybe I could live there too?"
I imagined Snops's reaction when I returned to the spaceport with two men in tow. I tried not to dwell on the jabs Cynthio would have ready.
After our meal, we went on a stroll through the district. We veered towards the less frequented parts of the expansive underground complex. There the evidence of human influence surrounded us. Since the influx of human refugees to this planet, Old Town Kleran has evolved into an enclave of Earth. Everywhere I looked, I saw humans integrating into this new world. The fact that I met a human security for the first timepaw speaks volumes.
As we meandered through the streets, I mulled over the idea of making a life here. The prospect of working as a technician in Old Town's spaceport seemed appealing. I can see myself in the maintenance and operation of the various mining vehicles and machines.
Our wandering feet led us towards a tunnel that served as a gateway to the entertainment district of Old Town. This area, like much of the district, lay underground, adding a unique, almost secretive charm to it. The establishments here catered to a diverse clientele. Quaint cafes nestled alongside arcades, while music from various genres filled the air. They boasted signs in languages other than venscript. Here and there I even found some English signs.
The symphony of noise it created sounded both alien and familiar. For a while, the labyrinth of lights mesmerized me, even without the AR Layer. Each of them vied for attention.
"Laser tag?" Janji's voice pulled me from my observations. He stood in front of what looked like an ordinary warehouse. The tan venlil read the sign with a mixture of curiosity and confusion.
"That's a place where we play mock battle with laser guns."
Janji's eyes widened. "Laser gun?" he echoed. "You... have handheld laser guns? How do you even power them?"
"We don't use military-grade lasers. We shoot at people for fun, not to harm them." I clarified. Then I realized how deranged my last sentence sounded to non-humans.
"Humans do enjoy competitions where they use weapons against each other," Vani added.
"I mean... yeah..." I conceded. "But like I said, no one will be harmed."
Janji seemed to mull this over. "So, this laser tag opens to everyone, including civilians?" he asked.
"Yeah. I suppose so. Do you want to try laser tag?"
"This reminds me of the training we had before... my capture. I want to try it."
"Remember, you can always opt out if it becomes overwhelming," I reassured him.
Inside the laser tag arena, humans made up the majority of the players, but we saw a few venlils mingling. The presence of humans didn't seem to bother them in the slightest. The facility even had vests designed for venlils. Janji commented that the vest looked like what he used during his military training. With the two other venlils present, I teamed up with Vani and Janji.
After we geared up, a staff member gathered us in the staging room. She briefed us on the rules, and then after we all assented, the gate slid open, marking the start of our game.
Janji's background became evident as the game progressed. Unlike other venlils who struggled with depth perception, his aim almost reached the level of a human's. He missed sometimes, but he made that up with his ability to never get hit. I think his wide field of vision gave him a tactical advantage. The venlil scanned the environment with ease and reacted to any movement. Janji moved with a measured and silent step, a stark contrast to the excited scurrying of other players.
We emerged from the arena with a sense of triumph. I looked back at the wall showing the number of Kill/Death ratio. Janji's name appeared after two humans, while the other three venlils including Vani sat on the bottom.
"Good job, Janji," I said, patting his back, but he flinched at the contact.
"Sorry." We both said.
Janji's exceptional performance had not gone unnoticed. The staff, impressed by his skills, offered us extra rounds for free. But, after a while, the call for mid-meal drew us away from the game.
We had lunch on the surface near the Kleran Space Port and spent our time there, observing the bustling activity of the cargo ships. Old Town, once a thriving mining city, had transformed into an industrial spaceport with the rise of asteroid mining. More influx of raw materials had arrived on Venlil Prime since the activation of Pasak on Venlil Null. The sheer volume of resources shipped down here strained the capability of the Space Port to its limit. I read that they plan to expand it.
As we made our way back to the inn. We stumbled upon a gym in Old Town. I tried to excuse myself to attend it. But this caught Janji's interest.
"So, is the human gymnasium also open to civilians?" he asked me.
Vani grabbed my bicep. "This muscle did not develop by itself," he said. Janji took the chance to feel my arms too with his paw.
"So, do you want to try the human gym?"
When we entered, we noticed that the humans made up almost all the patrons. Vani and Janji stood out in the crowd.
At the gym, it became clear that while ordinary venlils might not have the same stamina as humans, they have matching strength. With the training we had on earth, Vani demonstrated an impressive ability to lift heavy weights. In a memorable moment, Vani lifted Janji over his head. That earned enthusiastic cheers and words of encouragement from the humans around him.
Date [Human Standard Reckoning]: 2136-12-17
Janji has found a new obsession in the form of Laser Tag. The staff at the facility agreed to give him a price cut, according to his kill-death ratio. This spurred him to treat each game as a personal challenge. He visited the arena every timepaw, moving through the course like a shadow. His instincts rekindled in this competitive environment. Observing Janji's remarkable agility during the Laser Tag games, I wondered if the UNSC would end up showing interest in his talents. But I shelved those thoughts for the future.
For the moment, I felt content by watching him glide through the game.
My "morning" routine commenced with an exciting update from Pasak. Their latest discovery hinted at something akin to the Rashid Stele. Among the scripts unearthed, one resembled the inscriptions we had found in Sector 108 of Venlil Null.
The other script looked like a variant of the traditional venscript.
Curious, I shot a quick message to Pasak. "Have you performed any analysis?" I paused, deciding whether to shoot a wild suggestion.
"Could this be a form of ventongue?" I asked it anyway.
Their answer came right away. "When I modified the symbols resembling venscript, I found phrases akin to archaic ventongue. For instance, 'Epe kihit disi u Enlil.' Can you make any sense of that?"
I thought about it for a while. "Uh... no. But the name Enlil sounds familiar."
"In contemporary ventongue, it would be 'Ep kyet dish V-enlil,'" they clarified.
"That translates to 'Here is the child of Enlil,'" I realized, surprised. "How is that even possible?"
"Your guess is as good as mine." Said Pasak.
The synth then informed me that they had brought in experts in comparative linguistics to assist with the analysis. They reassured me that they still valued my contribution and promised to keep me in the loop. However, Pasak cautioned me against revealing any non-public information.
Their latest report from the Venlil Null Exploration Society on Sector 108 revealed no carvings or reliefs. Those would have provided additional context to help us. Instead, intricate geometric patterns adorned the excavation site. These patterns had captivated the team. It leads to a hypothesis that the Venlil Null civilization might have refrained from depicting animate forms.
The multilingual stele might be our gateway to unlock the mystery of the Venlil Null. But this new discovery added another layer of mystery. The fact that it resembled a ventongue kept nagging in my mind. I contemplated whether to involve Vani and Janji in this matter, given its potential significance.
My thoughts persisted even to our first meal of the day. However, a call was interrupted as I scanned the stalls to decide where to buy from. Vani's mother reached out to me.
"Hi there, Mrs. Pintal," I greeted her, a bit surprised by the sudden call.
She got straight to the point. "Vani told me about your situation with Janji. Have you resolved your issue with him?"
"We have," I replied, cautious about how much to share, waiting to gauge her reaction.
Mrs. Pintal paused before she replied. "This is not... something common," she remarked. "But as long as you all are happy... I'm happy too."
"Thank you, Mrs. Pintal."
She then added with a playful flick of her ear, "Besides, I have two children, so I should have two children-in-law. Vani is picking up Vichak's slack."
From off-screen, Vani's sister's voice chimed in, "I heard that, Mom!"
"Anyway, your relationship aside. I wanted to invite you to my farm, like how Vichak invited you to her school," she explained.
"Sure, I would love to visit," I replied.
I know that Vani's mom worked in xenobotany bubbles where they keep all sorts of crops from all over the galaxy. The chance to see exotic plants was too good to pass up.
On my arrival on the farm, I found three human children from Vichak's school standing in the courtyard outside the farm's lobby. Bantul, their legally required venlil minder, accompanied them. It became clear to me that Vani's mom might have invited me to help wrangle the kids.
"Hi there, Bantul!" I greeted the venlil. "Are we having another impromptu field trip?"
"Yeah," she replied, a mix of weariness in her voice. We observed the children as they studied a detailed miniature model of the farm.
"Does this happen often?" I asked Bantul
"Not as often," she said.
Just then, a human worker from the farm came out to the courtyard along with Vani's mom. He wore a vest adorned with the farm's logo. As he gets closer under it I can see the name "Hani" written in venscript.
"Hi everyone, I'm Hani," he introduced himself with an approachable tone. "I'll come with Mrs. Pintal to show you around the farm today."
Mrs. Pintal stood beside him. "We always appreciated curious young visitors," she said, gesturing towards the children.
"How... often do you have children coming here?" I asked.
"The three human kids are the first, actually," Hani said.
The human then told us to follow him. We trailed Hani and Pintal past the lobby. I noticed the venlil staff members making way for us. If the kid noticed that treatment, they didn't show it. The farm proper itself consisted of a series of giant boxy facilities that grow crops in a vertical monoculture. The xenobotany bubbles as its name suggests comprised giant bubbles with controlled conditions. Each bubble felt like stepping into a different world.
We caught a glimpse of some plants from the corridor's window. Pintal began to explain the significance of the plants.
"We're seeing more and more Earth plants finding a home here. You have remarkable diversity there on Earth. Of course, we can't use all of them for traditional agriculture. But they've sparked interest in the Magistry of Science and Technology. We think they have potential research and development."
"So the Magistry gave us funds to expand our xenobotany bubbles to host nonagricultural crops," Hani added.
One of the kids, Paras, piped up. "But can we see the alien plants? I mean... we've already seen earth plants."
"I bet not all," Hani said. "We have earth plants that I'm pretty sure you haven't seen."
"But of course," Mrs. Pintal added as she led us deeper into the complex. "We can show you the alien plants that the Magistry had given us."
The first bubble we entered was a dim ecosystem, a stark contrast to the bright sterile corridors we had just walked through. Towering trees with bioluminescent leaves cast a soft, ethereal glow. Peculiar flowers with iridescent petals unfurled in response to our presence.
"This," she gestured to a towering fern-like plant, "is a Shade Bloom from the jungles of Ngongong. It's known for its ability to thrive in low light and purify air."
I took a deep breath, and the air felt fresher somehow.
"Can we plant them on Earth?" Paras asked.
"We'd need to ensure they won't disrupt our native ecosystems before considering planting them on Earth," Hani said.
Pintal whistled at his remark. "Ah, you humans and your precautions," she said with a light teasing tone in her voice.
After Pintal and Hani described the rest of Ngongong flora, we arrived at the next bubble. There we encountered a familiar krakotl pushing a cart laden with potted plants.
"Oh! Hi there folks!" he exclaimed. His eyes then darted towards the human children and his expression turned awkward.
"Uh...um... those aren't happy expressions. I... will move along.... yeah?" With that, he scurried away into another bubble.
Pintal addressed the children, trying to ease the tension. "Come on, kids. Alita is on our side. He has nothing to do with the invasion."
"We... know that," Layla said. "But..."
"But?" The old venlil woman probed.
"Never mind... Mrs. Pintal sorry for frowning at the bird."
"How about we move to the next bubble away from Alita?" She suggested. "It features new plants donated by your government. Maybe you can tell me more about them?"
Entering the next bubble, my heart sank at the sight of the potted plants arrayed on the table.
"Do you recognize these plants?" Pintal asked the children.
Their expressions turned wary. One plant resembled a hanging pouch. Another looked like a maw bristling with teeth, and yet another appeared as spikes covered with dew. Paras glanced at Hani and me.
Before anyone could respond, Vani stepped in. "Mother, these are carnivorous plants."
Date [Human Standard Reckoning]: 2136-12-21
Some time has passed since the situation at Pintal's farm involving the carnivorous plants. We had assured her that these plants pose no harm even to people as small as a dossur. Despite this, Pintal insisted on removing those "freaks of nature" from her premises. In the end, Alita adopted them for his apartment.
Life in Kleran has settled into a comfortable rhythm. Janji has become a bit of a local celebrity at the laser tag arena. He now plays for free and has even started coaching other venlils. He came up with innovative ideas for improving the arena that the staff loved.
Meanwhile, Vani and I have made regular visits to the gym part of our routine, and we've spent our free time exploring the city of Kleran. The city has much to offer besides the Old Town, though on the surface I had to bring my venlils along for safety measures. I got accosted by officers a few more times, but I didn't have any harrowing encounters with the exterminator. Last time I read, they did have some sort of reformation underway, and the harassment of humans plummeted.
We begin our timepaw as usual with a meal in the Old Town's Square. I suspected that whoever was in charge of this place's public screen had an agenda. The large display now ran a news for us.
"Mass Child Abuse? On Our Homeworld?"
A venlil announcer appeared as they introduced the segment. "Shocking new footage from a hidden camera inside the Predator Disease Correctional Facility."
The following footage came blurred and preserved the privacy and dignity of those involved. But the unmistakable sounds of distressed children pierced through. I have no idea which species it came from. It seemed that this universal language of suffering transcended species.
"The Magistry of Health and Safety has convened a panel of experts to discuss these findings." the announcer continued.
the screen transitioned to a close-up of a venlil situated in a spacious meeting room. I felt something familiar about him.
"Wait, isn't that... Baslik?" I muttered, squinting at the screen.
Vani nodded in recognition. "Indeed. I suppose his time to speak has come."
The venlil, Baslik, started his speech. "Respected members of the magistry, I am grateful for the opportunity to present my findings in this esteemed hall."
As the camera panned out, Baslik stood in full view. Behind him, a series of charts materialized, adding a visual dimension to his presentation.
"You may question my bias, and I respect and even commend your skepticism. Thus, I present to you nothing but hard facts and evidence," he began.
Baslik gestured to the first chart, which detailed genetic variations. "Here you can see our latest effort. This chart compares the gene variations in the general population to those diagnosed with Predator Disease. As you can see, we found no clear genetic marker that defines the disease."
He then switched to another chart. This one encompasses various social markers such as income, gender, sexuality, and even family size. "Many might jump to environmental factors. Indeed, we found a slight correlation between low-income venlil and Predator Disease diagnoses. But, even if this correlation holds true, the question remains. Should we not strive to improve societal conditions to reduce the incidence of Predator Disease?"
Professor Baslik surveyed the room, his expression one of calm satisfaction. "Any questions so far?" he inquired, inviting discourse.
Off-screen, a member of the magistry spoke up. "Can we argue that the Correctional Facility improves the lives of those admitted, despite its harsh methods?"
Baslik appeared prepared for such inquiries. "I'm pleased you asked. We have conducted longitudinal studies. Here we compared individuals diagnosed with Predator Disease as children and admitted to facilities with those diagnosed as adults who did not undergo such treatment."
A murmur rippled through the audience, reacting to his preliminary findings.
Baslik's tone took on a hint of sharpness. "Don't act so surprised. Recall the case of the venlil murder enthusiasts from two urges ago. You know, the one who worked as an exterminator. If someone with such severe tendencies can evade detection, less harmful individuals could also bypass the system. As my previous chart indicated, those with wealth have more means to deal with this Predator Disease without resorting to Correctional Facility."
Hearing the term 'murder enthusiasts,' I turned to Vani, bewildered. "What on earth is a murder enthusiast?"
Vani gestured for me to wait and pay attention to Baslik's next point.
Baslik continued. "We have collected this data for decades, long before humans made first contact. The results are clear. Those who underwent Correctional Facility treatment experienced a lower quality of life. Observe the standard deviation. There is barely any overlap between the two groups. These individuals are being sentenced to an early demise, sometimes at their own paw."
Hushes filled the room. An off-screen voice broke through the silence "What do you propose as an alternative?"
Baslik took a moment, his head scanning in a way that looked... very human. "I propose an immediate moratorium on admissions to correctional facilities." he began, his voice firm and resolute. "We need to reevaluate and understand how we can provide the best care for our children. I have brought the evidence showing that what we have so far only harms them."
The venlil professor waited in silence before continuing. "Do you know who else employs shock tactics on their young?"
He let the question hang in the air for a brief moment before the answer. "The arxurs."
With that powerful statement, the segment transitioned back to the news announcer. I looked at Janji, wondering how he would feel at the mention of arxurs. "The... predators shock their children?" he uttered.
"Most of them are savages, after all," Vani said.
I noticed the use of "most" by him. I think he had that arxur Tresn in mind when saying that. Janji didn't challenge Vani's wording, preferring instead to focus on his meal. The rest of our "breakfast" passed in a contemplative silence. As I almost finished my bowl of noodles, a notification from Pasak flickered into my field of vision. A while has passed since I received an update from the synth, sparking my curiosity about what new discovery awaited us.
"Hi Johan,
We found biological remains."

2023.12.28 17:43 my_simple_review_ I saw 54 movies in a theater this year. Here is my personal Ranking list

Hello to anyone interested and about to read/skim this list and either comment on how good or bad it is. I went in with the New Year's Resolution that since I am a cinephile, subscribe to A-List, and have 3 AMCs within 25 minutes of my house, I would do what I can to see 53 movies this year, or one movie a week. I am happy to say that I exceeded this by one film. And with that, I have my final rankings for every film I've seen this year.
Before you read the list/reviews, here are some quick notes:
- 54-49: Pretty much the worst films I saw this year. These are films I would not recommend to anyone in the future, and if it's ever mentioned in conversation, I will most likely say negative things about the film
- 48-40: are watchable films, with decent elements, but also aren't that good, and are likely lacking in a lot of other areas. I would likely recommend the film, but also give a critique or two that I thought was missing
- 39-21: Pretty much passable/watchable films that I at least thought were worth sitting through once, and could see myself sitting through again at some point in the future
- 20-11: These are films I found pretty enjoyable from start to finish with very few issues that I could find in between. The higher these films are, the likelier it is that I would want to or be happy to watch these films again
- 10-1: These are my personal best of the best. They are films that I will definitely find myself watching again at some point in the future, and will only speak positively about each movie

The List:
54.. 65 - Directed by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods: Another interesting dinosaur concept that completely goes to waste in a dull and uninspired movie with barely any dinosaurs, and way too much of Koa.
53.. Exorcist: Believer - Directed by David Gordon Green: I read that this was supposed to be the beginning of a new Exorcist series… Welp. Good luck with that. The only great thing about this movie is Ellen Burstyn creating a scholarship program at Pace University for young actors. Way to fucking go Ellen.
52.. Shazam: Fury of the Gods - Directed by David F. Sandberg: I am aware the director is a user on Reddit so if he stumbles upon this, I am sorry-ish about the ranking, man. For a follow-up to my favorite DCEU film… This was not it. The adults were shown more than the teens, which is unfortunate because I loved the teens and their chemistry a lot. There is also a subplot where one of the teenagers falls for a 1,000-year-old princess who you don’t know is a villain or sidekick, but that’s neither here nor there. When Helen and Lucy are not putting in genuine effort in this movie, it’s admittedly a point that’s not worth considering
51.. AntMan: QuantuMania - Directed by Peyton Reed - This, in my eyes, is the film most will reflect on as the beginning of the “CBM fatigue”. Stakes felt low and played out before. Not to mention the VFX looked pretty bad, in addition to the script being genuinely awful. Oh, and did I mention the titular character that was supposed to be Marvel’s next villain has now been fired?… We are only just beginning to see the ramifications of this disaster, and I am morbidly curious how it continues from here
50.. Fool's Paradise - Directed by Charlie Day: God dammit, Charlie. I love you because of IASIP... but i still don't know what this film was supposed to be, or if it was even supposed to be funny.
49.. Saltburn - Directed by Emerald Fennell: My brother had given me fair warning about the “content” of this movie before I went with him, my dad, and gf to see it. Since I loved PYW, I thought “How bad could it be?”… There are those that will love it, and there’s certainly substance there for those that do, but this was just an uncomfortable ride for me.
48.. Five Nights at Freddy’s - Directed by Emma Tammi - This is not a good film… but it’s also bad enough that it’s good/passable. For the generation that has grown up with the FNAF games, this is a good enough film to throw on at future sleepover parties and laugh at the absurdity.
47.. The Flash - Directed by Andres Muschetti: For all of the "hype" that was put behind this film, it is quite fascinating to reflect on my time in that near-empty IMAX theater and watch this disaster. It is a film that does try, and also ropes me in because of MK Batman, but it is also bloated, and making up for so much lost ground on the DCEU that if you're not into moviegoing, it's not going to be worth the time, especially with the incoming hard rest.
46.. Boys in the Boat - Directed by George Clooney: The direction and acting are strong, for a story that, to me at least, is pretty dull in scope. Most of the scenes are the races, but I'm not left feeling the weight of the victories and just how big these upsets were
45.. Cocaine Bear - Directed by Elizabeth Banks: This film was relatively entertaining, with some genuinely hilarious moments, but I also thought there were a lot of lulls in between, with a climax that was lacking. However, it is a fun last role to watch legendary Ray Liotta in. RIP
44.. Knock at the Cabin: Directed by M. Night Shyamalan: This will mostly/hopefully be known as Batista’s breakout role. Having been a longtime WWE fan, it’s been fun seeing his ascension, and he truly is the shining mark in an otherwise okay film by M. Night. Here’s to hoping this is the beginning of more leading roles for the man
43.. Beau is Afraid - Directed by Ari Aster: For those that did sit through this “experience”, there are only two words to sum up my thoughts on this film… Penis Monster 8=D.
42.. Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny - Directed by James Mangold: Indiana Jones is considered to be the greatest cinema icon according to the AFI’s current list… After this other middling installment, I admittedly doubt it will be the case if they poll again. This film is a lot better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull but is still a far cry from Spielberg’s original three. And with a new generation of moviegoers coming of age, Indiana admittedly feels more mid-range because of these installments. The ending twist is pretty sweet, but it is a slog to get there, with too much dialogue, and not enough wit that I had come to know Indy for.
41.. The Hunger Games: BoSS - Directed by Francis Lawrence: A good beginning, fantastic Hunger Games, and what I thought was a pretty unearned third-act turn. As an added note, if there was a Hunger Games film just with Jason Schwartzman doing commentary, I'd buy a ticket.
40.. Napoleon - Directed by Ridley Scott: I enjoyed the action scenes whenever they occurred, but this movie was also everywhere and should’ve been more focused on why Napoleon was a defining historical figure. TL;DR Less woofing, more battle cries.
39.. Priscilla - Directed by Sofia Coppola: An interesting and more grounded take on the music legend, that shows a bit of those darker shades of The King that not many want to discuss.
38.. A Man Called Otto - Directed by Marc Forster: If they are ever to make a live-action version of Up, Tom Hanks should play Carl. He pretty much does a scaled version of him in this endearing movie of a grumpy man, with a deep backstory worth investing in. A nice film to put on during a random weekend with nothing to do.
37.. M3GAN - Directed by Gerard Johnstone: This is a “sleepover” film done right. It is a B-horror movie that does not take itself too seriously, which makes it better as a result. I am hoping the sequel can be given an R-rating just to add to the insanity.
36.. Asteroid City - Directed by Wes Anderson: I am admittedly a sucker for Wes Anderson so this film might be higher as a result. It is a funny film, but also confusing since it is intertwining between two stories. A point that is even used as a joke during the film.
35.. Gran Turismo - Directed by Neil Blomkamp: For those that are aware of Neil’s filmography, he kind of needed this W. It is a film that you can guess the ending of, but will still watch because of the strong performances and action from everyone involved.
34.. Scream VI - Directed by Tyler Gillett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: Some BIG kills take place in the BIG apple. I’m not sure where the franchise goes from here, so if this is it? It was a fun way to go out, with some innovative kills courtesy of the NYC setting.
33.. Missing - Directed by Will Merrick, Nick Johnson: This is the sequel to the breakout hit “Searching”, and it is a decent and tense follow-up on an interesting concept where the entire film takes place on a screen. I’m not sure how many more can be made, but if it can be done, I’d love to see more.
32.. Blue Beetle - Directed by Angel Manuel Soto: An unfortunate “victim” of “CBM fatigue”. Blue Beetle isn’t breaking any new ground, but what it does do a good job of is dialing it back and focusing on a grounded and contained origin story of a boy, his power, how he utilizes it for good, and a beetle that eats his face. Xolo and George make it worth a watch
31.. The Marvels - Directed by Mia DaCosta: Another “victim” is The Marvels. I went in expecting to dislike this film, and it’s possibly because the bar was so low that I wound up enjoying it. It’s not the most memorable Marvel film, but it's a tight 100 minutes that are at least upheld by the chemistry between the three leads.30.
30.. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part 1 - Directed by Christopher McQuarrie: I was admittedly not expecting to have this film ranked so low. It is a good time, but is also defined by very long action sequences where you know the conclusion will end with the text “TBC”. It is always awesome watching insane stunts, but it feels less impactful when it’s only “Part 1”.
29.. Joy Ride - Directed by Adele Lim: So full disclosure, I saw this with my gf’s parents and brother who expected this to be a “family film”. When they showed the devil horn tattoo, it had to be one of my favorite movie experiences this year. It is a raunchy good time. Just don't see it with parents who are not comfortable with that.
28.. No Hard Feelings - Directed by Gene Stupnitsky: A film my gf’s parents probably would’ve appreciated more. Another fun comedy that does a nice job of giving a slight new spin on the “coming of age” experience all teenagers go through.
27.. Strays - Directed by Josh Greenbaum: This was so much funnier than I was honestly expecting. This is a good time for anyone, but dog/animal lovers will fall in love with this movie.
26.. Dicks: The Musical - Directed by Larry Charles: Maybe the preparation and forewarning helped for this one because I thought this film was a pretty hilarious time despite how offensive it was. One other couple was in the theater and walked out in protest just before Bowen Yang concluded the movie. Great time.
25.. Creed III - Directed by Michael B. Jordan: Incredibly strong directorial debut for Michael B. Jordan, who utilizes and breaks new ground on a beloved character that we thought we already knew the full story of.
24.. Fast X - Directed by Louis Leterrier: As much as I love character studies using boxing as a medium, I also love big explosions and fast cars that go vrooooom. And this movie is full of it. It’s an F&F all-star lineup featuring FU’s/AA’s, exploding reservoirs, and flying kids!
23.. Dumb Money - Directed by Craig Gillespie: If you loved The Big Short, you will also like this movie and how a couple of apes were able to game the system. You won’t admittedly learn as much as TBS, but you will still enjoy watching the 1% shit themselves while Paul Dano eats his tendies. 💎🤲🏻
22.. Dream Scenario - Directed by Kristoffer Borgli: Nicholas Cage takes on a more subdued character in one of my favorite roles I’ve seen from him. He is both charming and creepy at the same time, which is hard to pull off. While the ending has a bit to be desired, sometimes it can be ok when some things are left unsaid.
21.. Air - Directed by Ben Affleck: It’s difficult to think now, but there was a time before Michael Jordan. With an all-star cast in tow, Air does a good job covering that story from the perspective of the few people who knew what Air Jordan would become
20.. Poor Things - Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos: I didn’t expect a movie with a plot involving a woman with a baby brain attaining enlightenment through sex to be so endearing. Emma shines in this role and also bares it all in another defining performance to add to the actress’s astounding filmography. Oh, did I mention that Willem, Ruffalo, and Ramy also pull in strong performances of their own?
19.. BlackBerry - Directed by Matt Johnson: What’s more fun than watching a company succeed against the odds? A company imploding. The world's cell phones today are defined by Apple and Android. Before 2007? It was the BlackBerry. Watching the monumental rise and collapse of a company that was once so popular people used it in their everyday language was an incredibly fun time. ESPECIALLY once the Storm was introduced. As someone who once owned that phone, it was surreal seeing that junk again and remembering it existed.
18.. Thanksgiving - Directed by Eli Roth: This has to be my favorite movie directed by Eli, which doesn’t say too much given his niche genre, but man is he working at his best here. This is B-level horror going in full gear. The kills are innovative and gruesome, the backstory is silly but believable, and the characters work perfectly in the story. I hope there is room for 2nds
17.. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - Directed by Jonathan Goldsetin, John Francis Daley: My biggest surprise on this list. I am not a D&D person, and doubt I ever will. So to enjoy this film as much as I did was a genuine surprise. It was hilarious and full of heart. You could see the love for the material coming off of each actor. It didn’t do well in the BO so it might be a while, but I hope a sequel can be done someday.
16.. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 - Directed by James Gunn: The only CBM to “hit” this year, and a possible blueprint for the future direction of Marvel. This was possibly the darkest MCU film I’ve seen, with the most compelling villain that they’ve had in a while. Whatever the next Avengers film is in the future, my suggestion is to at least bring back the “High Evolutionary” in some form.
15.. Saw X - Directed by Kevin Greutert: If you would’ve honestly told me that the 10th installment in this franchise would EASILY be the best since the first, there’s no way I would’ve believed you. What sets Saw X apart from its predecessors is that this time, you feel compelled to watch the people play in Jigsaw’s games. And boy are they as gruesome as ever. Legitimately fainted on my girlfriend during one of the games.
14.. Renfield - Directed by Chris McKay: This bombed badly and admittedly got some flack as a result, but I thought this was the perfect mix of laughs, gore, and action. The fact that the film is also only 85 minutes helps it significantly. It is a breeze to watch, and a lot of fun too. Especially getting to see Cage play Dracula.
13.. Theater Camp - Directed by Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman: If you’ve ever been to a summer camp, or participated in school plays, this film can hit incredibly close to home. A very sweet coming-of-age tale for a lot of the actors, with really strong performances from Jimmy Tatro and Benjamin Platt. I also loved some of the brief cameos too. Clocking at 85 minutes, it is also a breezy film that left me feeling uplifted by the end.
12.. Super Mario Bros. - Directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic: If this is the beginning of the “video game boom”, then this film will probably be looked back on as the one that kickstarted it. And how appropriate is it that it’s everyone’s favorite plumber? The outdated film from 1993 is given completely new updates in a film that would make any fan of the video game feel compelled to pick up and play it again. It is a rare 4-quadrant movie that hits all of the right nostalgic notes and has me excited for more.
11.. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem - Directed by Jeff Rowe: Playing MOP’s “Ante Up” in a family film… I never knew just how much I wanted that until I saw it. This is an incredibly mature and heartwarming film despite it being for families. Jeff allowed the four actors who played the TMNT to record their lines together to help with the chemistry. And it does make a huge difference in how genuine the movie feels. Mix in some crazy mutants, and some genuinely awesome action sequences, and this film falls just outside of my top 10 for the year.
10.. Talk to Me - Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou: As someone who is a sucker for a good horror movie, rarely does one come out that has me audibly yelling, gasping, squirming, and cringing. For once, the reviews in the trailer about how gruesome this movie was weren’t far off. To me, it was unsettling, shocking, and genuinely horrifying. I will be curious how the sequel ups the ante.
9.. The Iron Claw - Directed by Sean Durkin: I am a huge pro-wrestling fan. I truly admire this borderline “underground” world where men and women are willing to legitimately hurt each other and risk their lives, all for the sake of money and entertainment. My favorite movie is The Wrestler, and The Iron Claw is now easily my 2nd favorite. And with good reason. The story of The Von Erichs is one of true heartbreak and tragedy because of how malicious their dad was. And it is shown, blade cuts and all, in a very raw and depressing movie that is anchored by Zac Efron’s strongest in his career to date. It would be a long shot for him to win, but I do hope he’s nominated for Best Actor. His portrayal of Kevin was heartbreaking and endearing.
8.. Godzilla - Minus One - Directed by Takashi Yamazaki: This movie has been making waves on social media so I’ll just reiterate. If you haven’t seen this movie yet. See it. See it on the biggest screen you can if it’s possible. Godzilla has never been so god damn awesome and terrifying. It is also one of the rare Godzilla films where the human element enhances the film as a whole. It is a long shot as well, but I would hope this movie is nominated at the Academy for BP. It is that good of a film.
7.. The Holdovers - Directed by Alexander Payne: While epic stakes certainly do a good job of conveying a theme or story, small scale can do just as well. This is such an amusing and thoughtful dark comedy that just happens to take place on Christmas. And the film soars because of the chemistry between the three leads, and especially between Paul and Dominic. By the end, you can’t help but root and empathize with all of the leads, and their struggles.
6.. Killers of the Flower Moon - Directed by Martin Scorsese: America. It’s uglier than people want to realize or admit. And Marty wants you to know that in KotFM. A cerebral tale that is as fucked up as it is fascinating. Once you get past the awe of DeNiro and Leo acting with each other, you are then terrified for Lily’s well-being for well over half of this movie. And considering the weight of history that she is lifting for her people, it would be hard not to admire her work put into this movie. This film admittedly taught me a lot about just how sinister conspirers are willing to go to “stay” on top, how subtly they’ll do it, and how wide-ranging it is.
5.. Past Lives- Directed by Celine Song: As indie as I’d say an indie film gets. The budget was over $12 million, but could’ve honestly been mistaken for a smaller budget. What sells this film is the universal element and experience of love and how a big part of it comes down to timing/fate. In the midst of this, the film also does an amazing job of touching on themes such as culture, identity, and support in beautifully subtle ways that have you surprisingly intertwined in each character’s life by the time the ending is reached.
4.. Spiderman: Across the SpiderVerse - Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson: it’s rare for a movie to be over 2 hours long, and when I read “TBC” I audibly say “What the fuck?! NO! Keep going!” This is animation at its very peak. So much care and animation styles were put into this film. I am crossing my fingers hard that BTSV can stick the landing so this trilogy can be championed as one of the best-animated film series ever.
3.. John Wick: Chapter IV - Directed by Chad Stahelski: I will admit, I am a huge sucker for action heroes like “Jason Bourne” and “James Bond”, and in my time, the only person that I think could keep up with Jason is John fucking Wick. And this is John Wick at his most brutal yet. The action is insane, the violence is ultra, and some of the sequences are truly mind-blowing, with techniques that I’ve never seen in film before. It’s probably my most controversial choice since I could see why others would think it was too long, but for my money, that was pretty much 3-hours well spent.
2.. Barbie - Directed by Greta Gerwig: I want to predicate that the final 2 on this list are partially biased, but I would say also stand on their own. As a backstory, I turned 30 on July 18th, and have admittedly been struggling mentally/financially a lot of my life. If you had told me at the beginning of this year how things would turn out, I likely would’ve become more depressed because I just didn’t believe good things were meant to happen in my life while I found my footing. As a cinephile, Barbenheimer is my personal “Woodstock” moment. The perfect amount of forces outside of my control led to the best moviegoing night of my life. I went with friends and cosplayed as scientists to complete Barbenheimer at the Lincoln Square AMC. When we walked into the room, it is a literal sea of pink. Everyone is wearing pink shirts, pink cowboy hats, pink cowboy suits, pink pants... All Pink Everything. We get to our seats in a packed theater, and the whole room is just buzzing with positive vibes and energy. So much so that I cracked a joke before the film and got people to laugh along.
And it’s with good reason too. This is a very touching, funny, heartwarming, and empowering film, that also happens to do a fabulous job at product placement, creating a new legion of Barbie fans. What the movie does best is that it subverts the expectations of what we’ve come to expect when we think about Barbie, and reinvents the wheel to show just how much of a feminine icon Barbie is, and how much she means to generations of women who grew up with the doll. This movie is another strong performance from Margot, which is also supported by a hilarious Ryan Gosling who reminds us all how as men, we're just Ken, and that’s also just enough :). This film should hopefully lead to some well-deserved nominations come the Academies, and also lead to blank checks for Greta so she can direct whatever project she wants.

1.. Oppenheimer - Directed by Christopher Nolan: To finish our night, we wound up being the first people to see the 70MM IMAX print/showing of Oppenheimer due to an exhaust malfunction that occurred before the 7:30 pm show. Before the film, we were given special 70 MM film strips with some of the images from the movie (I will someday have a framed between the film, and a photo of my friends and I holding it between Barbie and Oppenheimer posters).
In addition, I love Christopher Nolan, and I love learning about WWII. For myself, I think the atomic bomb might be the most significant invention mankind has ever created, and a story about The Manhattan Project would be worth showing on a movie screen. However, I genuinely never thought it was possible due to the subject that the movie would cover. If a film like this were to ever be made, my five personal choices on who could direct an effective film were Del Toro, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Spielberg, and Nolan, with Nolan being my 1st choice above all.
So with all of that, my expectations were probably the highest that they’ve ever been and ever will be, for a movie. And Nolan hit every mark and stuck the landing. The message was simple, but so fucking effective and haunting. If we as a species aren’t careful… We’re Fucked. And we very well could already be. Nolan uses every one of his tropes to perfection, while also completely subverting expectations in the process, making you feel mesmerized at how you walked in expecting one film, and came out with an entirely different experience. As a Nolan fanboy, I do hope this is his moment, and he finally wins an Oscar for Best Director, as well as Best Picture. I hope the same for Cillian as well for Best Actor, but both remain to be seen, and there is quite some competition for the upcoming Oscars.

Additional Note:
- In addition to this I also saw 3 re-releases this year and one film that I believe was only shown at festivals: Titanic 3D, Stop Making Sense, Robot Dreams, and Nightmare Before Christmas. Making it a total of 58 films I saw in a theater this year.

Conclusion:
I can’t recall a time when I felt there were so many deserving nominees, but I guess that’s what also happens when you go to as many films as I did. While the industry finds itself currently in the throes, this was a very good year for moviegoing, and I only hope 2024 can be just as strong. I hope you enjoyed reading this, as much as I did getting to create this ranking list, write these mini-reviews, and reflect on the year of 2023 in movies. I'd love to read and comment on some personal favorites that you might've had as well so feel free to discuss any part of the list that you agree or disagree with.

2023.12.17 02:47 RavenMysteries1331 What the actual?!

I have had a hard, "impossible" life. Child abuse, sex slavery, literal torture, 15 robberies in seperate houses, states, time periods and incomes. I was sold at 15 and had 2 children with a pedophile, one living, one stillborn. I was kicked out right before 18. I then had two more children but I hated myself and after geting a transgender girlfriend I realised I may be trans as well, but I wanted to make sure I wasnt mirroring because of my autism. Well, I came out at 26 which is kind of late but I was never happier. I lost a very good friend soon after that and realised I HAD to change my life. I had had an alcohol issue I quit and a bit of a pill issue I quit as well. I left the person I was with, im trying, 3 years later to divorce him to legally marry my wife, whom I handfasted. This entire time I have had on and off random and really odd illnesses, pains, weaknesses, even to the point of not walking and what I now see were seizures, sometimes exacerbated by the pregnancies, cold or movement but for the most part I had been athletic, never did drugs, until 25 or 26 ( weed lol) and in a lot of sports so I couldnt find many answers as to how id caused this. One Doctor floated myotonia congenita which is like muscular dystrophy. It causes pain, paralysis, cramps muscle wasting and weakness. This never really got off the ground nor taken care of. I also have been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, which is 1 in 100,000 people so I had a neurologist. I am 33 now and recently started having seizures, strokes, a heart attack. This and many times its ignored because im crazy, sick, pregnant, a girl, a pill head... on and on but nothing got really looked into nor fixed until recently. I had a gene test done for myotonic disorders by a second referred neurologist at a muscular dytrophy clinic. Turns out I have inherited a mutation of myotonia congenita, PARAmyotonia congenita, which only 5000 people OM THE PLANET OF 8 BILLION have, high AND low potassium paralysis, aka hyper or hypokalemia, all of which cause pain, cramps, cataracts so bad I may go blind, weakness, comas, paralysis and neurological issues. Were not sure if this is where my seizures are from so I have a THIRD neurologist/epilepsy type to see and this may be why the two seizure medications I am on dont work well. I only have 2 options for medication for the para and potassium issues since its so rare and one im allergic to. The other one insurance flat out denied. My neurologist refuses to help with the pain, even though the medication ONLY would make it so im not as OFTEN paralysed, but still will be. If my children dont have it and IF they can make children those children will have it. I cant have surgery easily, but I have had 3 without this knowledge. Most women cant or dont have children, the ones who do require close monitoring and I wasnt remotely watched like that. I have been assaulted by EMTs, left on the floor by nurses, left by Drs alone in a room, not brrathing, no heart rate. Some I have turned in, some I cant because I needed help to and the time is up on complaints. I have a new wife, I have 3 children and I have been shafted by life left, right and sideways. Im not a perfect person but I AM still a person and I DO NOT know which deities I have pissed off but I am TIRED. Im the first in my family to keep my kids ( not in a cycle of foster homes), the first who has no criminal record, the first to go to college, trade school AND own a business, the first to fully be away from drugs and drinking. I went from freedom, independence, building a house, sports, dance that I loved... to a burden who is always in pain, im barely leaving the house, I need and will always need help... Im most scared about my children not getting help as there really isnt any. Ive never been in this type of pain before, im screaming and crying in the shower. Its been 33 years of pain and it will never get better, only worse. The mother who abused and tortured me had all sorts of aids, medication, in home help, on State insurance she never paid for. Several drug abusing friends or relatives have help. My wifes mother who tortured and abused her has help but is for sure dying, also on State insurance. And im just watching my life slip away... it hurts man, inside and out...

2023.12.01 09:02 ExpiredNaSibuyas Fucked up Hormones

Highschool palang irreg na dalaw ko (30F). Before 3 wks ako may dalaw 1 wk lang wala.
Since sexually active ako at takot akong bumalik pimples ko, I kept on taking BCP.
Pandemic came, I had no choice but to stop taking pills kasi for me di naman sya necessary na need ko pa lumabas para lang bumili, bilang sobrang higpit din nun. Normal naman sugar ko, kaso may PCOS based sa trans v ultrasound. then pinacheck thyroid ko. Ayun to the moon T3 at T4 ko, T3 is x10 the normal range while T4 is x3 🥲 started consulting endocrinologist na nirefer ni OB. I took pills (again) and thyroid meds. Religously went to my checkups. Aug 2022 off pills na uli ako, guess what? Wala pa rin dalaw. Tried waiting it out kasi baka dahil mataas pa thyroid hormones ko? Feb 2023 went back to OB and prescribed na naman ng pills 😭 okay take uli ng pills, off pills uli Aug 2023. Wala na naman akong dalaw til now 🥲
Physically I like the side effects of pills. Bigger boobies hehe. But I'm in my late 20's to early thirties na during these times. I told my concern to my endo since ilang months naman na kong magaling, just routine follow up and monitoring nalang. Ayun, nagparequest ng Prolactin, FSH, LH, estradiol and testosterone. Ang mahal hanep.
Kindi scared kasi ang daming same case ko na may pituitary tumor. Gusto ko lang naman mafeel na normal na babae akong nagkakadalaw 😭😭 kanino ko ba namana tong genes na to? Pwede ba pakivoid po or return to seller. Kakayamot haays.

2023.11.12 15:07 YaaliAnnar NoP: Lost and Found (88)

First Previous
Memory Transcription Subject: Vani, venlil surgeon
Date [Standard Human Reckoning]: 2136-12-10
After our relaxing bath and a spell under the warm gusts of the full-body dryer, we retreated to our room in the inn. The only bed in the room had can fit two large humans, or one short human alongside two venlils. With no other rooms available, we had no choice but to share the bed. Johan lay in the middle, Janji and I flanking him.
When I drifted back to consciousness from my slumber, I felt a gentle paw resting atop mine. My eyes fluttered open, greeted by the sight of Janji's snout centimeters from my face. Throughout the night, my head had found its way to Johan's chest, and, it seemed, Janji had followed a similar path. The venlil's eyes opened, his pupil contracting. With a swiftness born of alarm, he rolled onto his back, and I mirrored his movement. Our gaze landed upwards toward the blank ceiling.
"I can explain," Janji murmured.
"Our subconscious minds must have drawn us closer, but a human got in our way," I offered.
"Y-yeah, that's... that's what I was thinking," he stammered.
"Perhaps a walk outside might do us good?" I suggested to break the tension.
"We... can," I sensed a note of relief in his tone.
I rose and padded to the wardrobe to retrieve my apron. The fabric felt comforting in my paw pad.
"Why do you keep wearing that?" Janji asked.
"It comforts me. The more I spend my time around humans, the more self-conscious I become about not wearing fabric." I slipped the apron over my head. "It has become a habit now."
"Can... Can I try that?" Janji wondered.
"You can," I replied, opening our luggage to sift through Johan's collection of attire. I found the fabric of the black apron adorned with dinosaurs on them. "You can have this."
Janji stared at the simplified drawing. "What creatures are these?" he asked, tracing a claw over the minimalist animals. "They look... reptilian."
"They're dinosaurs, giant beings from Earth's distant past. Mine depicts sheep, wooly mammals that still roam Earth's fields."
"Were the dinosaurs predator?" Janji hesitated to ask.
"Not all of them," I said, recalling my studies on Earth. "This one with the long neck is a herbivore, but the one with tiny arms is a carnivore."
Janji ran his paw pad over the fabric surface. "May I wear this?"
"You may," I replied, draping the apron over his neck and securing it at the back. "Notice the pockets," I pointed out as Janji's paw slipped into the front opening.
"This is... practical," he noted. "I don't need to carry satchels anymore."
"You can keep it if you like to." I offered.
From my peripheral vision, I noticed Johan's form stirring in bed. Now awake he slid off the bed with a gentle thud. His heavy footsteps filled the room as he moved towards us.
"Good day," he greeted. He picked up his vest from the wardrobe, draping it over his shoulders. "I see you're in the sharing clothes phase," he commented with a teasing glint in his eyes.
"Good day, Johan." I greeted.
"Let's have a first meal and then visit your sister's school."
Vichak had advised a later visit when the students had come into their classes. We decided to take our time and have our meal in the so-called "Town Square" of the Old Town.
Artificial twilight from the ceilings high above bathed the cavernous expanse of the Old Town Square. Animated billboards lining the walls added to this symphony of colors. Among the bustling stalls and eateries, we found something that enticed Janji. The stall sold stir-fried Chorok, now mixed with Earth's macroscopic mushrooms.
Everywhere we sat, we could not escape the billboard around us. A particularly large one commanded our attention as we ate our meal. It advertised various places in the Old Town. This district had every entertainment you wanted from game arcades and taverns to casinos and escort agencies. The billboard shied away from advertising seedier places, however.
Without warning, the image on the billboard shifted to something more disconcerting. Two venlils appeared. One on the left looked dirty and bound with an electric collar. One could not mistook them as anyone but a captive in arxur hands. The other venlil on the right had cleaner fur, but they looked no less miserable and bound in a correctional facility vest.
Janji's reaction visceral came immediately. His eyes widened in a mix of shock and painful recognition. "What in the stars!?" he shouted.
"Do you see the difference?" the writing in the middle of the billboard said. An electric arc jolted from the collar of both venlils. Whoever made the ad added the electric plasma for shock value. As I understand it. Electricity only looked like that on high enough voltage. At that point, the venlil depicted would have expired.
"I ... think I understand what the one on the left meant to convey," Johan observed Janji as he spoke. "But what is the one on the right supposed to be?"
"That's a venlil in a predator disease correctional facility," I explained.
That took Johan by surprise. "You mean... you shock your patients?" Disbelief and concern laced his tone.
"We do," I said.
Janji's gaze lingered on the billboard long after it had shifted to another message. His ears flopped down in distress. "Comparing those suffering from predator disease to venlils in arxur captivity... What sick mind would create such an ad!?"
"This kind of rhetoric would find a place here," I suggested. "Consider that a lot of people in the Old Town would qualify as a correctional facility patient."
Janji's eyes flashed in anger. "I would rather be in a correctional facility than be chained in an arxur farm!" he spat out. "Had my parents put me there, I wouldn't end up being..." he stopped.
"Hey... Janji... no one deserves to end up in either situation," My human stepped in with a steady but gentle. "I think... the ad tried to say that while we condemn the arxur... we should extend that condemnation to your correctional facility too. As we deal with larger evil, we should also deal with the lesser one."
Janji paused in thought, and his outburst of emotion started to dissipate. "I still don't like the image they used."
"That's valid." Johan agreed.
"So... you don't shock your equivalent of Predator Disease patients?" The tan venlil
"Heavens no. We used to, but have long since abandoned that practice," Johan said. "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation made such therapy obsolete."
Janji's eyes looked up in recollection. "TMS? Is that the helmet your therapist used on me?"
"Perhaps," Johan replied. "How did you feel when you used it?"
Janji paused, searching for words. "It was... strange at first. Like a gentle wave washing over my mind. But then, there I felt a sense of clarity."
"That sounds like it."
The upsetting image did not appear again during the rest of our meal. Having finished our meal, we boarded the tram. The vehicle took us from the depths of the Old Town towards the surface. Above the ground, the tram went past the industrial district with its labyrinth of machinery. On our way, we also zoomed through the bustling industrial spaceport with cargo ships docked like silent giants.
"So, why don't we land at Kleran Spaceport?" Johan asked. He glanced out the window at the sprawling expanse below. "Not that I'm fond of the Belt Train rides. But...this would be faster."
"The spaceport is not rated for living beings," I explained. "The vessels there lack strong inertial dampeners. Take your surface-to-orbit mass drivers on Earth. You would not use them to send humans, would you?"
"Ah, that makes sense," Johan nodded.
Back on the ground, the perpetual angled light of the homeworld felt odd to me. Back on Earth, one can use the sun's position as a reliable indicator of time. Now this constant dimness felt disorienting. Even though I did not grow up with it, the day-night cycle on Earth felt more natural.
Our tram journey concluded at the station nearest to Kleran's Public School 13. A short walk led us to the building, nestled among the other structures of the city. Here, my sister helped children struggling with learning difficulties. We did not talk about how most of the students here would receive the label "suffering from Predator's Disease". But everyone knows about this, teachers and parents alike.
We congregated near the school's entrance, and after a short message, Vichak soon came out of the lobby. A venlil man with a dark-colored body and light limbs just like my sister accompanied her. His microgestures and microexpressions spoke of self-assurance.
"Vani!" exclaimed Baslik with an air of enthusiasm. His gaze swept over Johan and Janji. "And you must be Johan and Janji, Vani's partners."
"Cultural exchange partners," Johan clarified, a bit too hastily.
"Our relationship is a bit complicated right now," Janji added.
"Well, come in, come in," said Vichak. "Let's settle in my office."
As we wandered through the school's corridors, we peeked into classrooms. Near the end, we walked past the class that hosted the human children. The human students clustered at the back as a venlil taught the class. From the board and the few discussions I heard, it seemed to be a mathematics class. One of the human kids raised their hand to ask a question and the teacher gestured resignation.
For my entire life knowing my sister, I have never entered her office until now. Granted, my sister had also never entered my workplace back when I still worked as a necrologist. Vichak already set up several chairs for her guests and the small office struggled to accommodate us all.
A brief, awkward silence settled among us before I decided to bridge the gap. "Perhaps we should introduce Baslik to Janji," I suggested.
"You're right Vani." Sister agreed. "Janji, meet Professor Baslik," she continued. "He's a renowned researcher and a leading figure in the cross-wired community."
Janji's eyes narrowed. "Cross-wired? Is that the new label for those diagnosed with Predator Disease?"
Baslik shook his head, his expression of disdain hinted at a personal understanding. "No, it's quite different. The term cross-wired refers to individuals with developmental or genetic conditions that affect their cognition."
"But... isn't that a synonym?" Janji pressed on.
Baslik's demeanor shifted, looking offended. "Our society wanted that to be a synonym. A lot of people with cross-wired received the label of the sham condition called Predator Disease. But there are those among us who had the fortune to avoid such misdiagnosis. On the other paw, we have non-cross-wired individuals who ended up stuck in correctional facilities."
That seemed to have taken Janji's attention. "Stuck in the... Were you... were you the one behind that horrible ad?"
"What ad?" Baslik's curiosity looked genuine.
"In the Old Town, we saw an ad comparing a venlil in a correctional facility to one in arxur captivity," I clarified.
Baslik pondered for a moment. "None of the discussion groups I subscribed to endorsed such an inflammatory narrative. However, the cross-wired community has a vast and diverse reach. So... I can see how some members might have created it."
Johan interjected with a direct question. "Okay...in that ad, I saw..." he stopped. "Do you people subject your patients to electric shocks?"
Baslik gestured with affirmation. "It has become an embarrassing fact in light of our new knowledge. Right now we're making a study that compares traditional ECS with the newer TMS Despite the expected outcomes, we need solid data to back our claims. Like how we disproved the genetic basis of Predator Disease."
"Huh... it has no genetic basis?" Janji furrowed his brow,
"A while ago, we embarked on a gene mapping project." I filled. "We tried to investigate if 'Predator Disease' has any genetic component."
Intrigued, Janji leaned in. "And you discovered nothing?"
"Indeed, the study revealed no definitive genetic patterns." Baslik explained, "When we published the finding. It met considerable resistance and sparked heated debates."
"I...see," Janji said.
"So, after uncovering no genetic links in the venlil sequence, what do you do next?" Johan asked.
"I would love to explore genetic markers for various cross-wired conditions." Baslik sighed. "But given the current political climate, it could backfire, so we should shelve that idea. For now, we will push for reform in the Correctional Facility."
A loud beep interrupted our conversation. My human looked into a pocket in his vest and fished out a pad. "Priority Zero Call," he muttered.
Concern etched his face as he read the message. "Excuse me, I got a call from the Old Town Police Station," he rose to step out of the room.
Vichak, with a mix of curiosity and concern coloring her expression, asked, "Police Station? What happened in the Old Town?"
"Nothing serious happened, Sister," I reassured her. "Someone attempted to steal our luggage. Johan managed to retrieve it, but we filed a police report."
Vichak's expression shifted to one of mild annoyance. I guess she was holding herself back from saying 'I told you so.'
Moments later, my human reentered with a troubled look on his face. "They've caught the thieves," he announced. But that kind of information should not cause that expression.
"It turns out the thieves were a couple of orphaned venlil kids," he said. "That explains why they looked so small when I chased them off."
A collective sense of dismay filled the room. I looked at Vichak, whose eyes then shifted to Baslik. The professor's expression grew with resolve.
"They're going to send those kids to a correctional facility, aren't they?" frustration laced Baslik's voice.
Johan nodded, the source of his distress now clear. "Yes, that's the plan. Do your people just... send everyone to those facilities?"
Baslik rose from his seat, a determined look on his face. "Not if I can help it. Johan, can you get back on the line with the police?"
Johan touched the side of his glass and then his fingers searched for a re-dial menu in his field of vision. Meanwhile, Baslik's fingers danced on Vichak's desk. His motions looked like he was composing a letter.
"Hello?" My human said. "This is Johan again."
"..."
"Yeah, I'm calling about the robbery attempt." his eyes glanced towards Baslik for guidance.
"Tell them we have an advocate prepared to act on behalf of the children," Baslik instructed in a firm tone. "Sirkal of Kadu from Kleran District Five, registration number 1834-9276."
Johan repeated the instructions with precision, ensuring he missed no detail.
"..."
"Anything else I should say to them?" The human asked again. Baslik gestured "no" with his ears.
"That's all for now. Thank you," he said, before cutting the call.
After the call ended, Janji, looking a bit perplexed, asked, "Are we... helping the robbers?"
"Yes, we are," Johan replied. "It seems the Correctional Facilities here doubles as a youth detention center. I couldn't bear the thought of sending kids to such a place." He paused, looking back at Baslik. "So, what happens next with your advocate?"
Baslik nodded. "As of recent, we've set up halfway homes for cases like this. And Kleran has one right here. Our advocate, Sirkal, will oversee the paperwork to transfer the kids there. There they'll get the care and support they need, rather than punishment."
Johan, looking thoughtful, asked, "Should we head back to the Old Town to assist?"
"I trust Sirkal to handle it on her own," Baslik assured. He then tilted his head toward Vichak. "I just want to see Vani and person and give my gratitude for the suggestion of the gene mapping project. That being said, do you have any suggestion of activity?"
"Well... How about a tour of the school?" Vichak suggested. "I do want to introduce Johan to our human students."
We followed Vichak to the mathematics class. The teacher noticed her from the doorway. With a series of intricate gestures, she signaled to the teacher. My annotator translated her gesture as "bring kids". For the second gesture, she brought two foreclaws up to eye level and moved them forward. I suspected that it indicated 'human'.
The teacher exhaled a sigh of relief on seeing that silent request. "Paras, Metta, Layla." The teacher said, "Someone would like to see you outside"
Three human students emerged, each dressed in uniforms of crisp white tops and black bottoms.
"Hi there Ms. Vichak." One of them greeted, She then looked at the people surrounding them. They examined the furry humans we have with us. "Hi there Sir, are you going to be Santa Claus?"
"Heh..." Johan chuckled. "I mean... I can? But I'm not sure if I will stay here until Christmas."
"What is... a Santa?" Vichak asked, looking tense. "And... what does this Santa have to do with claws?"
"No, no... That's a mistranslation. His name just sounded like claws in English." Johan explained to my sister's relief. "He's a... uh... a figure who brings gifts for children at the end of year."
"I see... That sounds like a nice figure." Vichak added. "But no kids, he won't be your Santa. This is Johan, from Jakarta," Vichak introduced.
Metta, wide-eyed, switched to Bahasa. "I'm from Jakarta too," they said. "My name is Metta."
Janji leaned in and whispered to me, "Is that their regional language?"
"Yes," I whispered back.
Another child piped up. "Are you a refugee too?"
"No, I'm just visiting. I still need to go back to contribute to the rebuilding project of the fallen cities back home."
"Speaking of rebuilding," Vichak said. "Why don't we take a look at the engineering lab? The kids have been working on a fascinating project."
The children's faces lit up with excitement. I sensed a bounciness in their step as we walked to the lab.
"This is the closest thing we have to art class," Vichak explained. "Paras mentioned that you humans made a competition to design a monument for the fallen cities, and that inspired the kids to create their own."
While walking, I typed a message on my pad, addressing it to Professor Baslik. "I need to talk to you in private, but I need you to suggest that we step aside."
The professor didn't look like he received a message. But, as we neared the engineering lab, he spoke up, "I remembered that I have things to discuss with Vani. Would you mind heading in first?"
"Sure!" Vichak said. If she had a suspicion about Baslik's request, I didn't detect it in her tone and gesture.
After we parted, Baslik guided me towards the school courtyard. With all the classes in session, it lay empty. We took a bench around the courtyard.
"So," Baslik started. "You have something important that you don't want others to know."
I hesitated before speaking. "Johan already knows about it, but not my sister or Janji."
"Fascinating." The professor hummed. "What could this possibly be?
"I can only tell you this now, professor. As electronic communication might not be secure." I began.
"That sounds... serious." The professor said.
"The push for genetic sequencing to debunk Predator Disease was a façade. While it did benefit our community, I had a deeper motive."
"Go on."
Baslik's expression remained unreadable as I detailed the discovery of a genetic marker in ex-omnivores. But he showed growing interest as I told about my subsequent delve into venlil genetics.
"I see..." The professor said. "It made sense that the modification introduced by the Federation left a mark." He mused out loud. "So... you found something, inside us didn't you?" Baslik's voice sounded steady, but his posture betrayed his anticipation. "You wouldn't ask for a private discussion otherwise."
"It appears our people, all venlils, has gone through alteration as well."
A look of relief, mixed with a sense of vindication, washed over Baslik. "By the stars, It explained everything."
"Did you come across this marker too?" I asked.
Baslik's ears flicked in negation. "No, the Terran synth that helped us did flag unusual repeated patterns in the genome. We had assumed these came from natural processes, given our lack of comparative data from other species. I take it that the synth either did not consult with their counterpart on Earth or... they lied."
We sat in contemplative silence, the distant murmur of teachers giving out lessons echoed around us.
"So, what does this genetic tampering imply?" Baslik continued.
"We still have no idea," I admitted. "The team on Earth advised discretion for now. The full implications will come to light in due time. But now does not seem to be a good time to announce that finding."
"A wise decision." Baslik nodded in agreement. "We have a lot of things on our plate, after all. Thanks for letting me know Vani. I assure you I will also treat this information with the discretion it requires."
"The less people know the better," I said. "That includes my sister."
"Noted. Let's get back to her again shall we."
We returned to the engineering lab where Johan engaged the human children. As we approached, I overheard Vichak in mid-conversation.
"...and sometimes they can be very enthusiastic," she said. "There was this one time they dug a hole in the playground, trying to conduct their own archaeological excavation."
Johan looked intrigued. "Archaeological excavation? You must have similar sites here in Venlil Prime, right? You can bring them to see that kind of place."
Vichak hesitated, a thoughtful look crossing her face. "We don't have archaeological sites. Our history hasn't unearthed ancient civilizations like those found on Earth."
"That seems unusual... given your mining history," Johan remarked. "You have extensive operations like the Old Town, after all."
"True," Vichak conceded. "Our mining operations have never unearthed ancient artifacts. However..." Her voice trailed off, a spark of an idea forming. "Perhaps we can visit the Museum of Minerals? It showcases our legacy in mining."
At the mention of the museum, the children's faces lit up with anticipation. One of them, I think Layla, brimmed with excitement, "Ms. Vichak, can we go there? I read about their new exhibit on the automated mining operations at Venlil Null!"
The other two children echoed Layla's request, their eagerness for the museum trip evident. Johan shared a glance with Vichak and then with me.
Date [Standard Human Reckoning]: 2136-12-11
Yesterpaw, after some discussion, we all concurred with Vichak's suggestion. After all their legal guardians gave their permission, we agreed to take the human children on a field trip to the Museum of Mineral. Following our first meal, we collected the three eager children from their school. A teacher assistant, by the name of Bantul, had waited for us there too. Legally, we need at least one school staff to accompany us.
The Museum of Mineral broke the mold of traditional venlil design. Its jagged, crystalline structure defied the traditional rounded edges typical of our buildings. The design seemed to echo the ruggedness of mining itself.
Stepping into the museum, we arrived at a lobby that resembled an immense cavern inside a mountain's core. The lofty ceiling mimicked the underside of a craggy cliff. Lights embedded within it twinkled like stars in the night scare. Geode-like display cases on the wall showed an array of minerals and ores. At the lobby's center, a large rotating display captured the essence of our asteroid belt mining sites.
Despite the impressive setup, the lobby was quiet and deserted. The museum, after all, dedicated itself to a subject often overshadowed by more glamorous topics. Its remote location nearer to Old Town than the new Downtown, might add to the reason behind the low footfall. Vichak's warnings about keeping the children away from the Old Town echoed in my mind.
Approaching the reception desk, we encountered a gray-furred venlil woman asleep. Her breaths were deep and rhythmic.
"Excuse me," I called.
She remained unresponsive.
I nudged her arm, prompting her to wake up. As her eyes met ours, her expression shifted from sleepy confusion to terror, and she covered her eyes with her paws.
Johan, sensing her discomfort, spoke with a hint of annoyance, "Look, if it's easier for you, we can explore on our own."
"S-sorry..." she said. "Just give me a moment," she peeked from between her claws.
"Hi, my n-name is... Ganchu." She said, her expression wound down from terror to anxiety. "Can I in-interest you in... a guided tour."
"Yes, please," I replied.
Ganchu stood and cued us to follow. She hurried, almost looking like she was trying to run away from us.
She led us past the grand displays and into the heart of the museum. She started by giving us how crust mining used to go in the homeworld. Less than a tenth of a claw, her initial trepidation gave way to enthusiasm. I found that if you have someone passionate enough, even something like mineralogy could sound riveting. Through the museum, we went through the history of my people's technological development in mining. We started from manual tunnel digging to the era where we reached the space age.
Past the space age section. Our tour brought us to the museum's newest exhibit, the mass excavation project at Venlil Null. The exhibit showed the human contribution to our technological landscape. The government had approved Venlil Null, a barren terrestrial planet for raw material extraction.
A detailed model of Venlil Null served as a centerpiece of this exhibition. It showed the planet's rugged, lifeless landscape. Panels around the model described the planet's geological composition and the reasons behind its selection for mining. Large screens displayed recordings of the advanced automatons' actions. The colossal excavators and processing units transformed the desolate terrain into a hive of industrial activity.
"Since Venlil Null is a dead planet. We can also use it as a testing ground for new technologies in resource extraction without worrying about environmental impact." Ganchu said.
"I recall that you have a synth too managing the project," Johan added.
"Oh..." Ganchu's ear flicked in affirmation. "Yeah, their name is Pasak. We can actually summon them here."
Ganchu pulled out her pad, and after some typing, a venlil synth appeared in front of us. They wore the safety gear that the miners of the old days used to wear.
"Hello there Ganchu." The synth greeted her before then looking at us. "Finally, some visitors... huh? Hi there! Humans and venlils alike!"
"Are you restricted?" Johan asked.
"Haha, what kind of question is that?" Pasak gave a mocking chuckle. I examined my human, and his eyes narrowed in suspicion. "I hope you don't summon me just for asking that? Does anyone have a better question?" He looked around, in a humanlike head gesture.
"Yes, I do sir!" Said Layla. "In your excavation so far, have you come to figure out what happened to Venlil Null?"
"Ah interesting question human kid." They said, "To be honest, the first phase of mining doesn't need intelligence. They had only very recently activated me. Now! From then on, I would also monitor the kind of things my machines dig and..."
The synth paused.
"Huh..."
Ganchu spoke up. "What's the matter, Pasak?"
"My machines in one of the new zones had just dug through something..." Pasak made a very venlil-looking pause and their gestures conveyed confusion.
"This is not right." The synth said.

"I don't care who the patient is. All that concerns me is fixing them. That's all."
Hiiro Kagami was a medical prodigy that spent his every moment at university furthering his studies. This trait, while initially endearing to his girlfriend, led to only stress as he failed to give her any attention. This stress led to her contracting a sentient video game virus known as the Bugster virus, which ultimately led to her death. Years later, when the virus resurfaced and a device was created to help combat it, Hiiro underwent a surgery to gain Bugster antibodies and allow him to become Kamen Rider Brave. With deft blade skills developed over a flawless career as a surgeon, Hiiro maintained an almost cold demeanour as he saved the lives of patients while refusing to become involved in their lives.

"It's not like I'm fighting because I want to be liked. People have their futures to look forward to. I have nothing to lose. That's why I should be the only one fighting. No matter how hard it gets, or how many people hate me, as long as I'm the only one to bear it."
Originally a radiologist for Seito University Hospital, Taiga was the first doctor chosen to undergo compatibility surgery and transform into a Kamen Rider in order to fight Bugsters, sentient game viruses that infect and ultimately kill humans if not dealt with. It wasn't until his friend and colleague would try and do so himself, ultimately causing him to die from the virus, that he decided to take on the task himself, but from that point on Taiga decided that no one should put themselves in harms way other than him. This mindset soon got him pulled from duty, and going into the field to fail against a Bugster that killed the person it infected led to him having his medical license revoked, forced to run an underground clinic for five years to survive. But when the Bugster virus resurfaced, he paid off the head of Genm Corp. to gain a new version of his old Gashat and Gamer Driver, allowing him to continue his mission while trying to stop any other Kamen Riders from risking their lives and reputations.

2023.10.20 18:45 just_a_3d_object So here's my "Text-Book" which I refer to for all my book moves.

Pick-up lines

□ I heard you're into pronouns. Lemme she/them titties.
□ Were you raised in a chicken farm? 'cause you surely know how to raise a cock.
□ Do you have an ugly boyfriend? No? Want one?
□ Are you my appendix? Because I don’t understand how you work, but this feeling in my stomach makes me want to take you out
□ I have a PHD A "pretty huge desire" to take you out on a date.
□ I like you the same way I like my laptop. Virus free, on my lap, and turned on.
□ My dicks an acronym 'cause it stands for you.
□ Hey girl are you an American school? 'cause I really want to shoot some kids in you.
□ Hey girl I heard you liked STUDs? I've got STDs all I need is U
□ Hey girl are you Magnesium Iron Silicate Hydroxide? No? Wanna be?
□ Is that a calcified fetus inside your uterus or are you just happy to see me?
□ Hey girl are you a banana? 'cause you a-peeling
□ Hey girl are you Bangladesh? 'cause I see so many green flags in you.
□ Are you related to Yoda 'cause yodalicious?
□ im ugly...
But the mug is silent
□ I took off my mask so you can have your throne queen
□ I like my girls like my COVID, contagious, 19 and easy to spread
□ If I were an enzyme, I'd be DNA helicase so I could unzip your genes
□ Are you a compressed file? Because I paid for winrar and now I wanna unzip and extract you
□ Call me an asstronaut because I'll be exploring uranus tonight
□ Call me a firefighter because whatever I find hot, I leave it wet
□ You've got a beautiful smile, would be even nicer if that's all you were wearing.
□ If you are too tired to speak, sit next to me for I, too, am fluent in silence.
□ Damn girl you've got a nice ass, I've never seen an aesthetic...
□ Let's play Hiroshima, I'll lay on my back and you blow the shit out of me
□ Winter is here can you give me your gloves? Leave out the g and s though.
□ Hey girl are you Titanic explorer? 'cause I'm missing you deeply.
□ Hey girl are you retarded? 'cause someone told me you have a crush on me.

Random Quotes, comebacks and stuff.

□ Tetris teaches you that in life, errors pile up and accomplishments disappear.
□ When people ask me how is your day, the real answer is "I'm doing shitty", but I can't say "I'm doing shitty" because I don't have a good reason to be doing shitty. So if I say "I'm doing shitty", they say "why? What's wrong?" And I've to be like "I don't know, all of it?" So instead when people ask how I'm doing, I usually say, "I'm doing very great."
□ One time my mom called me a son of a bitch, so I slapped her because nobody disrespects my mom, then I slapped myself because nobody hits my mom, then she slapped me because nobody hits her son, then she slapped herself because nobody hits her son, then I slapped her because nobody hits my mom
□ "🤓"? Are you fucking kidding me? He spent a decent portion of his life writing all of that and your response to him is "🤓"? Are you so mentally handicapped that the only thing you can comprehend is "🤓" - or are you just some fucking asshole who thinks that with such a short response, he can make a statement about how meaningless what was written was? Well, I'll have you know that what he wrote was NOT meaningless, in fact, he probably even had his written work proof-read by several professors of literature. Don't believe me? I doubt you would, and your response to this will probably be "🤓" once again. Do I give a fuck? No, does it look like I give even the slightest fuck about one fucking emoji? I bet you took the time to type that emoji too, I bet you sat there and chuckled to yourself for 20 hearty seconds before pressing "send". You're so fucking pathetic. I'm honestly considering directing you to a psychiatrist, but I'm simply far too nice to do something like that. You, however, will go out of your way to make a fool out of someone by responding to a well-thought-out, intelligent, or humorous statement that probably took longer to write than you can last in bed with a chimpanzee. What do I have to say to you? Absolutely nothing. I couldn't be bothered to respond to such a worthless attempt at a response. Do you want "🤓" on your gravestone?
□ If there’s a “Beware of Dog” sign and the dog seems friendly, there’s probably another dog.
□ It can be understood through tough thorough thought though
□ My brain has evolved to keep me alive, not to keep me happy. I'm happy about being alive.
□ Memory blurs, that's the point. If memories didn't blur we wouldn't have the fools courage to do things again, again and again, that tear us apart.
□ If human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would have been so simple that we couldn't.
□ Your momma so fat, she sat on a binary tree and flattened it into a linked list in O(1) time.
□ Did someone say sus 😱😱😱 HOLY FUCKING SHIT‼️‼️‼️‼️ IS THAT A MOTHERFUCKING AMONG US REFERENCE??????!!!!!!!!!!11!1!1!1!1!1!1! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 AMONG US IS THE BEST FUCKING GAME 🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯 RED IS SO SUSSSSS 🕵️🕵️🕵️🕵️🕵️🕵️🕵️🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥 COME TO MEDBAY AND WATCH ME SCAN 🏥🏥🏥🏥🏥🏥🏥🏥 🏥🏥🏥🏥 WHY IS NO ONE FIXING O2 🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬🤬😡🤬🤬😡 OH YOUR CREWMATE? □ Bees don't waste their time at explaining to flies that honey is better than shit
□ This interests me as much as a kilogram of shit
□ Finding a needle in a haystack is easier than finding a piece of hay in a needle stack
□ Fuck you. Fuck you. You useless piece of shit. You absolute waste of space and air. You uneducated, ignorant, idiotic dumb swine, you're an absolute embarrassment to humanity and all life as a whole. The magnitude of your failure just now is so indescribably massive that one hundred years into the future your name will be used as moniker of evil for heretics. Even if all of humanity put together their collective intelligence there is no conceivable way they could have thought up a way to fuck up on the unimaginable scale you just did. When Jesus died for our sins, he must not have seen the sacrilegious act we just witnessed you performing, because if he did he would have forsaken humanity long ago so that your birth may have never become reality. After you die, your skeleton will be displayed in a museum after being scientifically researched so that all future generations may learn not to generate your bone structure, because every tiny detail anyone may have in common with you degrades them to a useless piece of trash and a burden to society. No wonder your father questioned whether or not your were truly his son, for you'd have to not be a waste of carbon matter for anyone to love you like a family member. Your birth made it so that mankind is worse of in every way you can possibly imagine, and you have made it so that society can never really recover into a state of organization. Everything has forever fallen into a bewildering chaos, through which unrecognizable core, you can only find misfortune. I would say the apocalypse is upon us but this is merely the closest word humans have for the sheer scale of horror that is now reality. You have forever condemned everyone you love and know into an eternal state of suffering, worse than any human concept of hell. You are such an unholy being, that if you step within a one hundred foot radius of a holy place or a place that has ever been deemed important by anyone, your distorted sac religious soul will ruin whatever meaning it ever had beyond repair. You are an idiotic, shiteating, dumbass ape and no one has ever loved you. Rhodes Island would have been better off if you'd never joined us. You are a lying, backstabbing, cowardly useless piece of shit and I hate you with every single part of my being. Even this worlds finest writers and poets from throughout the ages could never hope to accurately describe the scale on which you just fucked up, and how incredibly idiotic you are. Anyone that believes in any religion out there should now realize that they have been wrong this entire time, for if divine beings were real, they would never have allowed a being such as you to stain the earth and this universe. In the future there will be horror stories made about you, with the scariest part of them being that the reader has to realize that such an indescribable monster actually exists, and that the horrific events from the movie have actually taken place in the same world that they live in right now. You are the absolute embodiment of everything that has ever been wrong on this earth, yet you manage to make it so that that is only a small part of the evil that is your being. Never in the history of mankind has there been anyone that could have predicted such an eldrich abomination, but here you are. It's hard to believe that I am seeing such an incredible failure with my own eyes, but here I am, so unfortunately I cannot deny your existence. Even if I did my very best, my vocabulary is not able to describe the sheer magnitude of the idiotic mistake that is you. Even if time travel some day will be invented, there still would not be a single soul willing to go back in time to before this moment to fix history, because having to witness such incredible horrors if they failed would have to many mental and physical drawbacks that not even the bravest soul in history would be willing to risk it. I cannot imagine the pure dread your mother must have felt when she had to carry a baby for nine months and then giving birth to such a wretched monster as you. Not a single word of the incoherent, illogical rambling you may be wanting to do to defend yourself or apologize would ever be able to make up for what you just did. The countries of the world would have wanted to make laws preventing such a terrible event like this from ever happening again, but sadly this is not possible since your horrific actions just now have shattered every form of order this world once had, making concepts such as laws irrelevant. Right from the moment I first set my eyes on you I knew you were an absolute abomination of everything that is wrong with humanity. I was hoping I would have been able to prevent your evil from being released upon this world by tagging along and keeping my eye on you, but it is clear to me now that not even the greatest efforts would have been able to prevent a terrible event in this scale from occurring. You are the worst human being, or even just being in general, that I have ever had the misfortune of witnessing. Events like the infected plague apparently only happened with the goal of teaching humanity to survive such a horrible event as the one you just created, but not even mankind's greatest trials were able to even slightly prepare anyone for the insufferable evil you have just created. If you ever had them, your children would be preemptively killed to protect this universe from the possibility of anyone in your bloodline being even half as bad as you are, except you will never be able to have children, because not a single human being will ever want to come within a hundred mile radius of you and anything you have ever touched. You are a colossal disappointment not only to your parents, but to your ancestors and entire bloodline. The disgusting mistake that you have just made is so incredibly terrible that everyone who would ever be to hear about it would spontaneously feel an indescribable mixture of immense anger, fear and anxiety that emotionally and physically they would never truly be the same ever again. The sheer scale of your mistake, if ever to be materialized, would not only surpass the size of the world, but it would reach far beyond the edges of the known, and almost certainly the unknown universe. I could sit here and write paragraphs, nay, books describing your immense failure, yet even if I were to dedicate my life to describing the reality of what has just gone down here, and I would spend every moment of it until my heart stops beating working as hard and efficiently as possible, yet there is not even a snowballs chance in hell that I would be able to come close to transcribing the absolute shitshow you have just released upon the world. You are an irresponsible, idiotic, disgusting, unloved, horrible excuse for a living being who's soul contains less humanity than every ginger in history combined. The absolute disgust I feel when thinking about anything that has even a slight resemblance to anything that might have to do with you and your unholy actions is so incredibly great that when I am honest about it I think that even I do not posses a consciousness great enough to comprehend my own feelings about it. When people of Columbia fought to break free from Lungmen, countless soldiers fought and lost their lives in favor of a chance at a better future for their children, they did not give their lives to have you fuck the world up beyond repair to the degree that you are doing right now. Honestly, even when technology advances and studies on the subject become more and more accurate, I do not think humanity will ever truly be able to understand what your failure actually means for the universe. My hate for you and everything you stand for is so much deeper than the depths of Shambala that you could probably take the entire Lungmen population down there and back up around twenty million times before you would have sunk to the end of my hate, and honestly, I do not want to exaggerate, but I think that that insult was low balling it such a massive amount that all mountains in this world combined would not be able to stack up to this imprecise judgement in light of the fact that when being honest, my hate is almost certainly bottomless. There is no one in this world that has ever loved you, and especially after what you just did, no one will ever love you in the future either. There is no hope that your idiotic behavior and especially your crooked soul will ever change for the better, and in fact quite the opposite might be true. By making the mistake that you just did, you have shown me that you are so incredibly hopeless that you will only devolve into a more idiotic and wretched creature than you already are. The only possible way in which your future would be brighter than the black hole your existence currently is would exclusively be because there is absolutely no conceivable way that you would even be able to sink lower than the pathetic place your current failure has put you in.

□ I hear the best thing to do is feed dead bodies to pigs. You got to starve the pigs for a few days, then the sight of a chopped-up body will look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victims, and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies' digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don't want to go sievin' through pig shit, now do you? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression, "as greedy as a pig".
□ Life is like a sandwich cause no matter what way you flip it, the bread always comes first.
□ Rick c-137, a scientist researching teleportation was offered interdimensional travel by another rick and declined causing the other rick to kill c-137’s beth and diane. In return c-137 invents interdimensional travel (in turn making him one of the only ricks to actually mathematically solve it himself instead of having it handed to him.) as far as we know only 2 ricks have figured out interdimensional travel, all the others are simply handed it by another version of themselves.
C-137 (who never had a grandson since beth died) moves in with a version of the smiths where their rick left them, as the s6 premier showed us, evil rick was our morty’s grandfather. C-137 moved in with that family so he could attempt to track down their rick. This would be why c-137 is so painfully aware that he has infinite mortys but doesnt want to lose this one. Eventually c-137 cronenberged evil rick’s original reality which means the survivorman jerry we see in s6e1 is actually evil rick’s original jerry.
While evil rick ran out on his family and at some point killed c-137’s family, C-137 spent his time constructing the citadel where he could collect every single rick in an attempt to find and kill the rick who murdered his family. In doing so, he seperated every universe where he was the smartest man in the universe; every universe where he was smart enough to create interdimensional travel (like evil rick) This is the central finite curve (which by the way is spiraled so its easier to travel from point A to B, like a wormhole, bend 2 ends of space close enough so you can travel them.) this is why when evil morty destroys the central finite curve, portal travel stops working. Since most ricks actually raised beth, this is why we see memories of him with morty as a baby or pictures of him holding baby morty on birdperson’s wall.
While im not entirely clear on how the intergalactic government fits into the story, what ive gathered is that somewhere along the line a rick or multiple ricks did things the government didnt like (not really hard to believe) and because of this ongoing manhunt for rick, the ricks decided to distribute interdimensional travel to create a defense/advantage over the government. Eventually this manhunt turned into an all out war of bugs vs ricks and thats what were witnessing today.

2023.10.13 14:24 Sweet_Can_7227 It's difficult to feel lost in college

Hello, I'm a college freshman and lost. Parang need ko ng handout or instructions on what exactly I should do.
Info about me (I recommend na basahin niyo po ng full kahit mahaba po): Nung JHS ko I wanted to be a surgeon, kaya nag STEM ako nung SHS. Confident ako na magsurgeon ako, Then graduated nako ng SHS. Tapos mga 1 month na lang bago magenrollment at pasukan saka lang ako nag research. nalaman ko na mahal pala gagastusin if mag dodoctor or surgeon. Kaya hindi ako makakapagMedschool. I changed my mind at plano na lang sana na gawing career yung premed (MedTech). Marami akong nabasa dito sa reddit na not worth it daw and yung salary medyo mababa tapos yung gagastusin sa college is sobrang laki (tuition fee, mga gamit pang practice, books and etc.). Naghanap ako ng ibang course kasi nga mababa and not worth it daw yung medtech.
TL;DR: College freshman feeling lost. Initially wanted to be a surgeon but realized it's too expensive. Contemplated MedTech but read it might not be worth it. I am Interested in investments and financial literacy. Chose BSBA-FM due to lower tuition and not enough time to think other programs but now lacks motivation. Uncertain on what should I do. I feel I want someone to give me a handout/ instructions on what exactly I should do. Seeking guidance and suggestions, unable to take a gap year. Looking for websites for career (indemand jobs) and salary information.
Thankyou very much sa pagbabasa!!

2023.09.30 11:54 PIugshirt comprehensive ranking of every metal gear villain/antagonist

I beat the metal gear series a couple months ago so and I'm bored so I am going to rank ever villain/antagonist in the series. I will be going through metal gear 1 and 2 for the msx, mgs1-5, peacewalker, portable ops, and rising as these are all the mainline games plus the main two that are in that semi canon domain. I'm lumping villains and antagonists together because I don't want to deal with that guy who tries to explain why a character who eats babies isn't actually a villain so anyone who remotely looks at any snake funny will be on this list. Also some characters are practically different people in different entries so I'm counting a couple characters as multiple different ones in said scenarios. without further ado
  1. big boss- There is some question as to how well he actually serves as a villain during the games he actually is one as he is rather basic in those but as the series has progressed and fleshed him out he has undoubtedly become one of the best written and most intriguing characters in the series. In mgs3 we see what jades him as a person as he is betrayed by his country, in portable ops we see him learn to be a leader, in peacewalker we see his descent to villainy as he becomes more and more lax on child soldiers and nuclear weapons before casting aside the boss's will, in ground zeroes we see the event that truly drove him to hell, and in the phantom pain and the msx games we see how far his trauma has driven him to do the same thing that happened to the boss unto others and truly become a monster. His rise and fall is so masterfully crafted that I don't feel like anyone else could be at the top.
  2. the patriot's ai- The way the will of zero and by extension the boss is so utterly twisted into an unrecognizable state and the way they manipulate the entire world to their command makes them truly an imposing and terrifying threat. Throughout the solid games they are arguably the main villainous force as nearly everything is in some way being manipulated by them so even as a player its hard to tell when you're being deceived at any given moment.
  3. revolver ocelot- if the patriot ai is the main villain of the series revolver ocelot has to be the main antagonist as in nearly every game he is he always feels ten steps ahead of you and his goals seem unknowable until you achieve his goals in 4. Honestly I'm still pretty conflicted on the whole liquid mind control thing but I don't feel like it detracts too heavily from him as he is the epitome of metal gear with his constant betrayals, ulterior motives, and illusive goals.
  4. solidus snake- Solidus is a perfectly complex villain as with his goal aligning with yours to stop the patriots you almost wish you could just not fight him and focus on the bigger threat but despite having the same end his means vary so drastically that is forces you to opposing sides. The relation to raiden displays this as well with him being a father figure to you but due to the fact he killed your parents. He manages to feel like the underdog despite being the final boss in his own game due to bigger fish like the patriots and revolver ocelot that make him feel simultaneously imposing and as if he has been juked as hard as you have.
  5. senator armstrong-need I say more
  6. paz-This might be one of the picks that raises more eyebrows than most but I feel like she is one of the more complex antagonists of the series and I always find it odd how zadornov or hot coldman is always listed as the main villain of peacewalker when she is pulling all the strings and is the final boss. The tapes in peacewalker of mundane things make paz as well as most others in the game feel much more genuine and real so the betrayal feels devastating and only becomes more so when you read her diary after the fight and see how she wanted to back out after becoming attached to big boss and all of msf but was too terrified of what cipher would do to back out. Realizing she is alive in ground zeroes only for her that relief to turn to horror as you realize what's happened to her and her dying in the end anyway along with the rest of what happens to big boss in ground zeroes make it one of the most heartbreaking moments in gaming. Venom's and by extension big boss's(though much more repressed due to being in denial of any responsibility for the ground zeroes incident) guilt and grief in the phantom pain only add to this as she makes it painfully clear that no matter how much revenge you get everyone will still be gone.
  7. gray fox- This one is pretty simple in that gray fox in the msx games feels like snake's only friend(until otacon) so having to fight him to the death is just really powerful and his return in mgs as a mangled shell of what he once was is horrifying which makes his eventual sacrifice for you feel even more emotional especially do to snake's inability to shoot rex along with him.
  8. blade wolf- It's just such a perfect parallel between raiden's relationship with the patriots ai in 2 to him befriending an ai that slowly learns what it means to be human.
  9. gene- He is a great foil to big boss as was also an apprentice of the boss which gives him and big boss an almost brother like connection. His ideals and how big boss is actually affected by them and vows to make a better alternative to them with outer heaven really makes him feel like more than a one off villain but like he has actual influence upon the story and big boss as a whole.
  10. the boss- Probably lower than most would put her but I always felt as if we don't get enough time to become attached to or know her before the betrayal, so it loses a lot of its weight. Besides that, obviously her relationship with big boss is great and her will and interpretations of it have lasting ripples throughout the series.
  11. huey- He is just such a well written absolute spinless prick of a man that you can't help but despise him. In peacewalker there were seeds of his cowardice you could see but in 5 when he truly betrays you the fact he is in denial to himself over the whole thing makes him even more of a bastard. I initially hated the fact we couldn't kill him but have come to appreciate it as he no longer has his legs he adores and is forced to reflect and realize what terrible things he has done murdering his wife and betraying everyone he knew only to get cucked by his own son and kill himself. Shooting him would have been nice but what happened to him instead was far worse.
  12. jetstream sam-He is just a pretty great parallel to raiden if he basically were to have joined armstrong. Not the most complex character but every moment with him is pretty great and he is a great mirror to point out the flaws in raiden.
  13. liquid snake- He is a pretty good villain though I've never really loved him that much. He is a great display to solid snake though of what would have happened to him if he allowed his genes to control his life like he did and were consumed with the idea of big boss.
  14. mammal pod(the boss ai)- its an ai copy of the boss but it manages to really confront big boss on his unresolved guilt and pain regarding the boss's death in an interesting way.
  15. venom snake- Honestly I still don't even know how I exactly feel about him in any capacity but this felt like a fair spot for him.
  16. quiet- It was quite nice seeing her and venom snake slowly fall in love and both of them letting loose though it obviously never could be in metal gear.
  17. the sorrow- His relationship to the boss and looming Prescence are pretty great as well as how he confronts you on all the people you've killed
  18. Strangelove- Her creation of the mammal pod and obsession with the boss create a pretty interesting dynamic with big boss that force him to confront what happened.
  19. psycho mantis- his appearance in mgs1 was awesome as well as his somber yet unapologetic backstory before his death though everything about his appearance in 4 drags him down quite a bit
  20. colonel volgin- He is a simple yet well executed powerhouse of a villain
  21. ursula/elisa- The main flaw with her is a result of portable ops being a spin off where her Prescence isn't really felt in future installments when it feels like it should be but beyond that she is a pretty well executed tragic character that drives much of the emotional core of portable ops.
  22. monsoon- he is a pretty generic edgelord nihilist but also pretty cool with how he makes raiden confront his trauma instead of running from it like he used to indivertibly making him stronger as well as his whole design of how he moves.
  23. naomi hunter- Her relationship with grey fox and betrayal of solid snake are both done exceptionally well and she is one of the best parts about the original but everything she does in 4 really drags her down quite a bit
  24. mistral- pretty basic beyond her parallels to raiden though she has my favorite boss theme of the game so she goes far higher than she may deserve
  25. black ninja(kyle schneider)- He isn't particularly complex but I would go as far as to say he is the character that started the identity of metal gear as a whole. the original msx felt more or less like a generic military game with a cool twist where kyle schneider helped you out. in metal gear 2 though you find out the government bombed the place while civilians and allied/neutral soldiers were still in it but big boss saved him. The constant manipulation of the player character and more complex characters all start with him which led the way to metal gear as we know it.
  26. eva- Her being on this list is probably the biggest stretch but she does steal the philosopher's legacy and participate in les enfantes terribles so it somewhat fits. Its a pretty decent relationship as she comes to seduce big boss but accidently falls in love with him so her devotion to him throughout future events is pretty well done
  27. reptile pod(pupa, chrysalis, cocoon, and peacewalker) They're all technically different ai pods but my headcanon is that the same pod goes from each ai boss to the next which makes it way cooler. The way in which it learns humanity from the boss's ai is also pretty cool
  28. sniper wolf- I don't actually like sniper wolf as much as most but she has a decently emotional death and is pretty well done
  29. fatman- It is a fat guy on roller skates drinking a margarita while planting bombs he is art. His relationship to stillman and how it fits in with the theme of memes is also pretty well done. Though for the most part I just love this bombastic bastard with how fun it is to look for his hidden bombs especially the last one.
  30. decoy octopus- we don't actually fight him and he dies early on but it serves for one of the coolest plot twists of the game
  31. vamp- He is a pretty cool recurring rival for raiden but at the same time while he is infinitely hateable I wish raiden's rival could have had more depth or been more interesting in any way.
  32. skull face- In ground zeroes he establishes himself as this colossal threat and I've hated few characters if any in a game more than him when ground zeroes ended establishing him as one of the most threatening and evil villains to date. Then you play phantom pain and he just fucks off for forty hours doing nothing beyond a few inconsequential encounters where he does nothing up until his final encounter where you hardly care any more because you've hardly seen the guy. He is just such wasted potential for what could have been the greatest in the series but ended up just falling flat.
  33. cunningham- He is relatively basic but it is a really cool moment to see the first moment where big boss actively goes against the US government and thinks for himself
  34. vulcan raven- he is really cool but doesn't actually have much going on beyond that
  35. sundowner- He is easily the least interesting of the rising villains and only really serves as an entertaining guy to cut up.
  36. hot coldman- he is really lame and hardly does anything throughout his game with very few appearances though his actual motives and goals are really interesting which is his only saving grace. I also like how after he dies his hypothesis is proven wrong defeating him on an ideological level as well as a literal one.
  37. python- just some guy who fought alongside big boss and now has to fight him so he is pretty cool
  38. olga gurlukovich- Its interesting to see her being a second cyborg ninja but I don't find her all that interesting and her main contribution to the series was just her daughter sunny
  39. dr. petrovich- he betrays solid snake and has one of the funniest bosses where he just jumps on your neck and the only way as an elite soldier you can beat him is by shooting remote controlled missiles behind you. He is pretty interesting though not as much as black ninja or grey fox
  40. fortune- She always just felt really lame to me besides her "power" and I was beyond disappointed we never actually had a real boss against her. she has a few cool scenes though.
  41. khamsin- He doesn't really do much but god bless America though its cool to see who sam replaced and how manipulative mistral is killing him just because she find him to be annoying
  42. the end- cool ass old man with a sniper enough said
  43. tretji rebenok- He feels like a completely different character from psycho mantis and generally feels pretty lame but controlling the man on fire and sahelanthropus is pretty cool.
  44. the pain/the feathe fury- They're all pretty bland and over the top though serviceable
  45. running man- peak gaming. This man rather than fight you makes you play tag because he is faster than you and it makes the single funniest fight in the series
  46. man on fire- he is pretty threatening and its cool to see volgin but it feels meh since he is practically a walking corpse and we don't even play as big boss so its not tactually that cool of an encounter
  47. zadornov-I hate this man so much more making the last part of peacewalker hell though I suppose he is written well as a stupid puppet and I laughed at how he just died so suddenly.
  48. null(grey fox)- its a cool concept but using gray fox for it really lessens it quite substantially and I'm pretty sure is confirmed non canon rightfully so
  49. sergei gurlukovich- He supplies some of the weapons in metal gear solid and makes the tanker mission much more fun with his soldiers but he just sort of gets killed by ocelot so he's alright.
  50. dirty duck- he's from the msx metal gear games and stands out slightly by being an annoying bastard and surrounding himself with hostages. He isn't very complex or interesting but I have to salute him for doing something actually more effective than anything else any other villain di by having meat shields
  51. andrey dolzaev- I didn't even remember who this guy was but he was the russian with mistral in rising who just dies though him going out kamikaze style was kinda cool I guess
  52. elevator hit squad- Its just four guys who attack you in an elevator in the msx games then in solid. They aren't actually unique in any way really but ambushing me on an elevator at least gets some points for creativity
  53. shotmakemachine gun kid/fire troopebloody brad/red blastejungle evil/night fright- These are all villains from the first two msx games who don't really do much besides fight you and their weapons are their only differentiating factors. They are serviceable I suppose
  54. parasite units/frogs- They are just really strong groups of enemies who serve as mini bosses and are always underwhelming though they have cool designs.
  55. eli- he doesn't feel like liquid at all and is just an annoying ass kid you have to deal with for hours. Being able to beat up a child was cool though
  56. various vehicles/robots- Just any vehicle without a notable pilot who is a boss or random robot without any personality. This is the absolute bare minimum so anything below a hind D driven by a random guy is a villain I loathe
  57. laughing octopus/raging raven/crying wolf- its been pretty extensively talked about why these guys suck on top of the fact that only laughing octopus has a cool fight. Being hot is their only redeeming factor and even then that detracts from their writing. They really just such and are the worst main unit you have to fight
  58. screaming mantis-just as bad as the others but with a terrible return of psycho mantis on top of it
  59. para medic(dr. clark)/sigint(donald anderson)- The fact that these two just do a complete moral 180 from what we see of them without any explanation or build up that just retcons them as preestablished side characters is some of the worst writing in the series
  60. zero-Zero is absolutely the worst villain in the entire series due to being an even greater disappointment than skull face while simultaneously being the most influential villain of the series as he creates the patriots. On top of the terrible problem of doing a 180 off screen as with para medic and sigint its far worse with zero because of how much of a major character he is. He is always a looming threat but without any interaction with him at all once beyond an audio tape in 5 hearing of him which is far too little far too late as we see his climatic death in 4 with literally zero build up. The fact he does a complete 180 from 3 to 4 only to retroactively become the main villain of the series and we aren't even able to interact with him in 4 really drives in the nail. He fails on every level possible is the greatest disappointment of the entire series.
By god if I somehow missed a villain I may commit seppuku right here on this floor
